Hello race fans!! Oh my goodness can you believe it, the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship has finally started! I’m not sure about you all but I’m super excited about this season, goo Jenson!!

Let’s talk about yesterday to start with, what an early wake up call for those of us in Europe! We live commented FP3 ice-3 the highlights of which can be found here. If you haven’t seen the results of the last practice session you can visit Christine’s lovely summary. Next came Qualifying which we again live commented , highlights and results can also be found on the blog. Leigh also wrote a great post on qualifying too .Needless to say you’ve probably heard already but qualifying didn’t go too well for HRT, in fact, they’re going home a bit early. Maybe not how they were expecting to start their season.

We didn’t just live comment the Formula 1 today, FBFB even covered the Boat Race!

It’s been nothing but Formula 1 excitement this weekend with some great videos being released, 2 pointed out by everyone’s favourite Joe and a rather awesome track walk with Jenson which everyone must see!

Aside from the videos, we’ve been receiving frequent updates from our Sidepodcast gang in Australia as they enjoy the amazing weekend first hand. Not that I’m jealous at all! So far Amy’s seen Joe , met Heikki and even helped the machanics in the garage! What will they get up to today!

It’s also come to my attention that the Formula 1 twitter world has been joined by 3 more F1 photographers. Clive Rose , Mark Thompson and Paul Gilham.

After the race, what are you planning for the week? While you may not want to think about that normally I come with a reminder of some exciting news. A group of commenters, Kai, Bassano, Janna and Scott with all be meeting in Boston for a get together. Do you live near there? Fancy meeting some like minded F1 fans for a chat? If so you can find more details here.

Taking a step back from motorsport lets take a look at some cute arty links;

• I’ve always loved cinematic photography

• Ever wanted to see Paris in 2,000 images?

• Here are some beautiful photographs taken from the air

• Travel photography is amazing, here are some beautiful examples of why.

Ever made a map collage?

• Oh.. and ever wanted to write a hypothetical letter?

I hope you all enjoy the race/ your Sunday, do make sure you join us in the comments, we’d love to hear from you!

I had those seats three years ago, great for the pre race grid build up and for the podium ceremony but could not see much during the race, watched the race in big screen ...

Hehe. I use noise eliminating headphones plugged into 5 live on fanvision so all good :)

I can't wait for the V8 supercars to start in about 40 mins I think. They sound awesome.

we always sit in fangio for exactly that reason. Love the pre race and the podium! I know lots of people don't like it though :) I've never sat right on start line before i normally sit further down the grid.

I was fine with that also because the previous days I spent in different corners, but would not want those seats for the entire weekend

Just had a thought: I wonder if Amy's plot has anything to do with this:

    twitter.com/sparkteamlotus

"A different fan commentator each race that will feed you updates of the trackside happenings of Team Lotus!"

Who'll be at Sepang again...? :D

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 02:45

"A different fan commentator each race that will feed you updates of the trackside happenings of Team Lotus!"

Why would she need our help?

  • Journeyer27/03/2011 at 02:46

Why would she need our help?

Not sure, to be honest. It was just an idea. :D But then I'm not sure how Lotus pick their superfan for each race. :)

  • Amy27/03/2011 at 02:48

    more thats not my plot.

but I don't see him as that selfish. He'd want the team to do well, but I hope there was a little bit of solace for him, seeing as watching the first race must be awful for him.

How unlucky must a band be?

Beulah (and several other bands) were not sold along with other properties of the label [Capricorn Records]. Former employees of Capricorn formed Velocette in order to release albums by the displaced bands, forcing the release date to be pushed back until September 11, 2001.

So your label gets sold from your feet and the earliest opportunity you have to launch your new album happens to be the morning of Sept 11th.

    Oh dear.

wow. Did they stay in the music business?

The album did so-so, but after the follow-up, they had been sapped and gave up. Shame - Beulah were a decent little lo-fi indie rock band if you like that sort of thing.

That would be my vote too. Just wanted to see if I was weird or something.... Just a little gift for myself in getting the new job.

    Congrats on that then

Thanks. It was not fun having to keep a very tight eye on my expenses. I just hope that I can now find a a place to park my hat and a decent seat for the Canadian Grand Prix.....

    Ooh, pit info

    Was broadcast quality good?

  • Amy27/03/2011 at 10:27

    Was broadcast quality good?

it was fab all weekend and then today it was appalling. Because we moved grandstands every day I don't know if its been like that on pit straight all weekend or not. I tweeted to tell them and they said they'd get tech onto it but it didn't get any better. Today if I left it lying in my lap like usual I got audio so buffery I couldn't listen to it, but it was about 90% good if I held it up at chest height so I spent the whole race holding onto it :)

The other big problem today is when 5Live went to Ant in the studio we just got silence, we normally get silence when they go to the news and things so it must be something to do with broadcasting from the uk vs broadcasting from the track. All will be better when Ant is back in Malaysia :)

  • Journeyer27/03/2011 at 10:51

    www.formula1.com/…ons/8695/fia.html

3.10 Bodywork behind the rear wheel centre line:

3.10.1 Any bodywork more than 150mm behind the rear wheel centre line which is between 150mm and 730mm above the reference plane, and between 75mm and 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between 150mm and 350mm behind the rear wheel centre line and between 300mm and 400mm above the reference plane. When viewed from the side of the car no longitudinal cross section may have more than one section in this area. Furthermore, no part of this

section in contact with the external air stream may have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than

    100mm.

Once this section is defined, 'gurney' type trim tabs may be fitted to the trailing edge. When measured in

any longitudinal cross section no dimension of any such trim tab may exceed 20mm.

3.10.2 Other than the bodywork defined in Article 3.10.9, any bodywork behind a point lying 50mm forward of the rear wheel centre line which is more than 730mm above the reference plane, and less than 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between the rear wheel centre line and a point 350mm behind it.

With the exception of minimal parts solely associated with adjustment of the section in accordance with Article 3.18 :

    - when viewed from the side of the car, no longitudinal cross section may have more than two sections in this area, each of which must be closed.

    - no part of these longitudinal cross sections in contact with the external air stream may have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than 100mm.

Once the rearmost and uppermost section is defined, 'gurney' type trim tabs may be fitted to the trailing edge. When measured in any longitudinal cross section no dimension of any such trim tab may exceed 20mm.

The chord of the rearmost and uppermost closed section must always be smaller than the chord of the lowermost section at the same lateral station.

Furthermore, the distance between adjacent sections at any longitudinal plane must lie between 10mm and 15mm at their closest position, except, in accordance with Article 3.18, when this distance must lie between 10mm and 50mm.

aw what a thing to be disqualified over!

  • Journeyer27/03/2011 at 10:53

3.10 Bodywork behind the rear wheel centre line:

I'm guessing someone made a big mistake somewhere either in manufacture or design. It's not the first time they've made such a mistake - they were also excluded from the results in 2000 for flouting similar regulations for the front wing.

  • Journeyer27/03/2011 at 10:55

aw what a thing to be disqualified over!

it's one of those open-and-shut regulations, i would think. it's either on the limit or over it. i'm a bit surprised this wasn't brought up in scrutineering.

definitely seems something i thought they would have noticed by now

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 11:00

Basically, the disqualification is because the back part of the car (Will Buxton is saying the top part of the rear wing) is the wrong shape. And not by enough for initial scrutineering to be alert to the problem.

  • Nick27/03/2011 at 13:34

I wonder if they might consider naming the race the Melbourne Grand Prix instead of Australian given that they are the ones paying for it?

(Victorian Grand Prix would win points for amusement)

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 13:47

I saw something rather amusing earlier this week. The F1 Shop in Meadowhall got sent a census form. Which would make sense except that the census is only meant to record residential properties...

  • Steven Roy27/03/2011 at 16:25

Something about a gap between two levels of the wing being too large

    According to Autosport

he rear wings did not comply with Articles 3.10.1 and 3.10.2 of the F1 Technical Regulations that demands wing parts do not have 'a local concave radius of curvature smaller than 100mm

That has to be the shape of the upper surface as Sauber said in the other story. Having a more concave upper surface can only cause more drag and a less efficient wing or am I being dense?

That has to be the shape of the upper surface as Sauber said in the other story. Having a more concave upper surface can only cause more drag and a less efficient wing or am I being dense?

It does until the adjustable wing is triggered. Then the airflow is channelled more aggressively and the leading edge of the upper wing acts as a scoop, forcing more air through the gap than permitted.

Basically, Sauber could have got more air into its adjustable wing than permitted.

I haven't read up on this at all but I don't see how having a more concave structure would do that. In normal running with the flap in the down position I can only think concave equals drag.

No doubt it will all be made clear. I just think it is a real shame it was not picked up in pre-event scrutineering

  • Kai27/03/2011 at 16:34

No doubt it will all be made clear. I just think it is a real shame it was not picked up in pre-event scrutineering

I haven't read up on this at all but I don't see how having a more concave structure would do that. In normal running with the flap in the down position I can only think concave equals drag.

The adjustable wing activates when the flap is in the up position. Had Sauber been seeking an advantage down the finishing straight, they could have used a more concave wing to do so. As you say, time would have been lost elsewhere in the lap.

Still think an accidental error in manufacturing or design is more likely.

I've done the first version of the FIA check list (but have nowhere to post it and am not convinced it's in presentable condition yet). Among other statistics, I can tell you:

    - there were 729 checks done in Australia, not counting the ones conducted on Thursday or Friday.

    - the check Sauber failed on was only administered to 9 cars, after the race

    - the only cars that got more checks than Pérez's car were those of Vettel, Alonso, Petrov and Alguersuari

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 17:04

So there is a chance someone else could have got away with it?

Yes. It's a spot check which on this occasion was only administered on some of the finishers. The problem is that there are so many regulations that the scrutineers cannot check all of them in the time available to them. So they have a bunch of standard checks they do at given parts of the weekend to either all cars or a large proportion of them, plus a selection of other checks at each race that are done to a sample.

  • Kai27/03/2011 at 17:05

Aye - heard that a few times.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 17:45

Bernie should have known that though

  • Joe in Fla27/03/2011 at 17:46

Do you think he really pays attention to Indycar?

    Surprised he knows it exists

If he doesn't, he has people around him that will

Half distance. This will surely become a timed race.

What's the time limit for Indycar?

  • Colin M...27/03/2011 at 18:11

Given the no. of yellow's, it's very possible.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 18:12

What's the time limit for Indycar?

    90 mins on a road/street race

  • Pat W27/03/2011 at 18:14

    90 mins on a road/street race

Not 2hrs? Their races are usually longer than F1 anyway

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 18:15

Not 2hrs? Their races are usually longer than F1 anyway

IndyCar circuits tend tend be shorter and quicker, so they rarely meet break the 90 minute barrier. Ovals have no time limit

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 18:25

Away from the race for a moment, I've put together little avatars for the race notes that signify which races I'm reporting from and which ones I'll be jotting down from TV. Debuting it this weekend

Correct. He needs to stop telling us all what he thinks she should do and let her just drive! Shut up, dude! He's not giving anyone else that treatment.

  • Kai27/03/2011 at 18:51

    maybe it broke

I thought that was possible, but the pit reporter just said she's happy with the car and how it's running, doesn't feel she needs it.

  • Kai27/03/2011 at 18:52

He hasn't said Danica should stop sticking her nose into places where her wing gets mangled

Yeah, interesting. But he did say she can't be good at Indy and Nascar at the same time.

Which is governed by temperature, above the weather

In reality it is about density of atoms/molecules. The closer together they are because they are more densely packed the faster sound travels across it.

Same reason sound travels way faster through a metal bar for example

He got out of the car after the race and had a good poke round the damage and then pushed it up to pretend there was no problem. It fell down as soon as he took his hand away though

I've been to a local Italian restaurant for my birthday meal. It was wonderful food - had a salmon pasta dish followed by strawberry cheesecake. Also managed to get in some practise of my Italian skills, though I was stumped by the last waitress... ...who turned out to only speak English.

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:01

I'd have thought so. Maybe a week to do the wing and then 2 or 3 days to get it through customs. If worst comes to the worst, they can put on one of the other wings they've got (apparently all the Sauber wings they had passed except for the two that were on the actual cars...)

How much of a benefit would the tighter radius of curvature be?

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 22:10

    Turd Polish.

Still 2 secs faster than Virgin

Apparently the radiator was unexpected vibration from the Renault lump, fix is planned already

Got to love a good italian place :)

Very true. I found a good one in the place where my Italian class is (which not only serves tasty food, but one of its staff is a classmate), and it's good to see my home town also has a good place. It's got a good selection of seafood and vegetable-based pastas and pizzas and the price is quite reasonable.

I don't think it would be a benefit

  • RG27/03/2011 at 22:11

    anyone mentioned tony's blog?

'You can't built Rome in a day'.

You've had 18 months Fernandes, you are still slower than the rest of them, and heck I'm sure Rome could have easily been built in 18 months.

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:13

I still can't fathom how the two just so happen racing fail but the others don't. They have to be identical, surely.

They have to be as identical as possible, but a one-off minor error wouldn't disqualify the component unless of course the error itself breached another regulation.

So? I would expect a team with Mike Gascoyne, two decent drivers, a Renault engine and a Red Bull Gearbox to be Toro Rosso/Force India pace personally.

Regardless, last year the new teams were harping on about being new, just struggling to get going, wait till next year etc.

All fine, but then don't show any progress in year 2, blame the suppliers again and then trot out some crap about a 5 year plan. Remember this guy apparently told Proton he would be winning races last year.

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:25

How much of a benefit would the tighter radius of curvature be?

A small one down the start/finish straight - and a minor disadvantage elsewhere on the circuit. It would have been swings and roundabouts, with the peaks and valleys increasing the larger the infringement (I suspect from what's been said that the infringement was small).

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:41

Cos they look better in a dress?

No, to save weight (swimmers also do it for aero reasons and in some cases to avoid damaging the new-generation full-body costumes that are surprisingly fragile).

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:41

Swimmers don't keep their legs in a crash helmet

No, to save weight (swimmers also do it for aero reasons and in some cases to avoid damaging the new-generation full-body costumes that are surprisingly fragile).

    Wouldn't that be fluid dynamics?

  • Steven Roy27/03/2011 at 22:45

    Wouldn't that be fluid dynamics?

    Hydrodynamics

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:45

    Wouldn't that be fluid dynamics?

For the bit below the surface it would be. Both fluid dynamics and aero count for something in swimming.

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:46

    Hydrodynamics

    Or that.

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 22:46

For the bit below the surface it would be. Both fluid dynamics and aero count for something in swimming.

Aero doesn't really have an effect at such low speeds

  • Alianora La Canta27/03/2011 at 22:49

Aero doesn't really have an effect at such low speeds

In theory, no. In practise, yes, especially for people who are proficient at racing dives (which I'm not) or have poor arm technique. Fluid dynamics are definitely more important, but aero does count to an extent.

I can give you the rundown now so you're mentally prepared.

Basically I need to get more likes and comments on a photo than other people get on theirs. One guy is currently at 102 likes so we have a lot of work to do! My photo hasn't been put up yet though so no one can like it yet :(

nope its a photo of me and cardboard heikki.

Because I appear to be telling you all, basically the prize I am trying to win is flights to the Korean GP for me and Pamela, accommodation there, and paddock passes as guests of Air Asia where you'll spend the weekend in the Lotus garage, blogging and tweeting about your experience.

Can you think of anyone who would be better suited to live tweeting from the Lotus garage? I think not.

We must rally the troops and get the sidepodcorrespondants to Korea!

  • Amy27/03/2011 at 23:49

how did that make you 90 minutes late?

because the photo had to be taken at the Air Asia Fanzone and you had to be waving their chequered flag in it. But because their staff were late the flag was locked away inside.

I'm not sure if its anything to do with the sparklotus thing, it just says blogging and tweeting 'as the air asia uber fan'

They might tie that in together, who else would be going to Korea!

The weird thing is the fanzone was in the city so all the actual fans were at the track. Its why we had to make a special trip there and why by the looks of things they dont have very many entrants, theres only 9 photos on the page at the moment. They're on www.facebook.com/airasiaaustralia by the way.
