Hello race fans!! Oh my goodness can you believe it, the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship has finally started! I’m not sure about you all but I’m super excited about this season, goo Jenson!!
Let’s talk about yesterday to start with, what an early wake up call for those of us in Europe! We live commented FP3 ice-3 the highlights of which can be found here. If you haven’t seen the results of the last practice session you can visit Christine’s lovely summary. Next came Qualifying which we again live commented , highlights and results can also be found on the blog. Leigh also wrote a great post on qualifying too .Needless to say you’ve probably heard already but qualifying didn’t go too well for HRT, in fact, they’re going home a bit early. Maybe not how they were expecting to start their season.
We didn’t just live comment the Formula 1 today, FBFB even covered the Boat Race!
It’s been nothing but Formula 1 excitement this weekend with some great videos being released, 2 pointed out by everyone’s favourite Joe and a rather awesome track walk with Jenson which everyone must see!
Aside from the videos, we’ve been receiving frequent updates from our Sidepodcast gang in Australia as they enjoy the amazing weekend first hand. Not that I’m jealous at all! So far Amy’s seen Joe , met Heikki and even helped the machanics in the garage! What will they get up to today!
It’s also come to my attention that the Formula 1 twitter world has been joined by 3 more F1 photographers. Clive Rose , Mark Thompson and Paul Gilham.
After the race, what are you planning for the week? While you may not want to think about that normally I come with a reminder of some exciting news. A group of commenters, Kai, Bassano, Janna and Scott with all be meeting in Boston for a get together. Do you live near there? Fancy meeting some like minded F1 fans for a chat? If so you can find more details here.
Taking a step back from motorsport lets take a look at some cute arty links;
• I’ve always loved cinematic photography
• Ever wanted to see Paris in 2,000 images?
• Here are some beautiful photographs taken from the air
• Travel photography is amazing, here are some beautiful examples of why.
• Oh.. and ever wanted to write a hypothetical letter?
I hope you all enjoy the race/ your Sunday, do make sure you join us in the comments, we’d love to hear from you!
Race day!
Sweet
:)
Nice daily Lou
our seats are awesome! Check twitter :)
They are too!

wow.
I love Lou's dailies. I need time to look at all the cool links.

Hope your earplugs are good for the start, that'll be incredible
I had those seats three years ago, great for the pre race grid build up and for the podium ceremony but could not see much during the race, watched the race in big screen ...
Hehe. I use noise eliminating headphones plugged into 5 live on fanvision so all good :)
I can't wait for the V8 supercars to start in about 40 mins I think. They sound awesome.
we always sit in fangio for exactly that reason. Love the pre race and the podium! I know lots of people don't like it though :) I've never sat right on start line before i normally sit further down the grid.
Love the Daily Lou. Much lolz at the Hypothetical Letters
I want to see those live.
really going now
night pat
I couldn't sit anywhere but fangio on a Sunday. I love the pre race build up right in front of us on the grid. Brabham was good yesterday though.
dear mary is awesome :)
I was fine with that also because the previous days I spent in different corners, but would not want those seats for the entire weekend
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90266 - I totally don't get this any longer ...
i had seats here all weekend in 09 and yes it wasn't great. Spent Friday watching practice from a GA viewing mound instead.
I'm at the go advantage bar. Love turn 1 for the start though
Linked it about a half-hour - just nuts. I made my thoughts clear earlier:
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/the-ongoing-lotus-court-case/
that time I was still asleep :-)
Not good enough
:D
Just had a thought: I wonder if Amy's plot has anything to do with this:
twitter.com/sparkteamlotus
"A different fan commentator each race that will feed you updates of the trackside happenings of Team Lotus!"
Who'll be at Sepang again...? :D
Why would she need our help?
Not sure, to be honest. It was just an idea. :D But then I'm not sure how Lotus pick their superfan for each race. :)
more thats not my plot.
Can everyone tweet ausgrandprix and get them to fix the big screen here at fangio? Its on a 3 second delay from the other ones!
And by more I mean nope
Flying circus describes it best :-)
:D
Done
thanks bassano
Inspired by Lou's link, here's my tweet.
Dear big screens at @ausgrandprix, Sorry I'm 3 seconds behind you at the mo, will get in sync soon with help. Love, Fangio Big Screen
Right! Finally at my stand at turn1
Getting all settled in?
heh love it kai.
I hope it works for you.
Starting to. Late start is a great idea
Hey Kai, when is race time for you?
2am I think.
#IndyCar - Randy Bernard chatters about live streaming, Vegas and the status of the Japanese race
http://morefrontwing.com/2011/03/26/bernard-talks-about-vegas-motegi-live-streaming/
i wish the ausgrandprix would tweet just to say thanks for letting us know or something, it would give me piece of mind to at least know they know there is a problem
Eeeeww
Correct! So, I will be on media blackout and I'll go to sleep and Mr. DVR will handle it, then Santa will bring the Aussie GP to me tomorrow in my stocking!
One wonders what Kubica was thinking this morning when 'Quick Nick' didn't get out of Q1..?
:-) yay
"no threat there"
"sweet"?
"he must be using tweetdeck"
but I don't see him as that selfish. He'd want the team to do well, but I hope there was a little bit of solace for him, seeing as watching the first race must be awful for him.
hehe!
:D
:-)
"Kubica is faster than you."
To be honest, I was thinking more along the lines of "this could have been so much better"
Yes.
What a waste.
Let's hope this contest goes better than the last one.

How unlucky must a band be?
So your label gets sold from your feet and the earliest opportunity you have to launch your new album happens to be the morning of Sept 11th.
Oh dear.
big crash in the v8s!
ruh roh
wow. Did they stay in the music business?
The album did so-so, but after the follow-up, they had been sapped and gave up. Shame - Beulah were a decent little lo-fi indie rock band if you like that sort of thing.
Is everyone ok?
Looks that way. Not sure why the race wasn't red flagged
I like their vibe, and the lead singer sounds a tiny bit like Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze sometimes.
Never really clocked that before, but.... yeeeeeah actually
Only sometimes, like on Popular Mechanics
tweet ausgrandprix about technical issues, nothing happens. Tweet fanvision about technical issues and they reply to say thanks and get their tech team to fix it
I have just figured out why Christine loves Back to the Future 2. it is the only film in the series that has actual clips from a Clint Eastwood "Man with No Name" Western. In this case, its "For A Few Dollars More"....
Ahhhh, the old armour under the Mexican Blanket trick....Works ever time....
So ausgrandprix really is using tweetdeck, then?
My dad used to love Clint Eastwood.
Same
I get what you mean.
For my next choice of listening, Dead Kennedy's or Kate Bush?
hm. Depends on your mood, they are so different.
I'm utterly adjustable
:)
Dead Kennedy's if you want to stay up. :)
No sleep for me tonight. Decided on Apostle of Hustle in the end

Haven't seen it - looks interesting. I've fallen out with films in the last few years - four years working in a video store was too much; however I will be going to see Senna at the fan premier in May
:)
I love Brendan Gleeson
I can't wait until it finally opens wide here!! It seems like forever...
I resisted watching it for so long, but the animation is old school and beautiful and the story was the same, except for the Viking bit.

I'll see you all tomorrow. I'd better go to sleep before I'm tempted to stay up. Santa will bring the race to me in the morning.

Nighty night
G'night Kai

I thought curry was supposed to be a cheap way of making explosions...hopefully a change of underwear willnot be required...
Night Kai. Hmm, wonder if I can last three hours for the start....
Coverage begins in 2 1/2 if that helps ;)
Coverage starts in 1 and a half hours surely?
Yes of course, sorry
Not where I live Bassano. More like coverage of teh race starts 5 minutes before 2:00 am (EDT).
Hey Bassano, you are the resident movie expect right?
Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration but wassup?
Would you rate Pale Rider or High Plains Drifter as the better "strange, weird" Eastwood Western ?
That's going back some but if memory serves, High Plains Drifter was better
That would be my vote too. Just wanted to see if I was weird or something.... Just a little gift for myself in getting the new job.
Congrats on that then :D
I still think of Gran Torino as a modern western. Worth checking out if you haven't seen it
<
Thanks. It was not fun having to keep a very tight eye on my expenses. I just hope that I can now find a a place to park my hat and a decent seat for the Canadian Grand Prix.....
I still think the original three Star Wars versions where excellent Westerns, Until Lucus went with the stupidspecial effects versions.....

Speaking about Stupid special effects from Star Wars, and on a slight tangent, I wonder why Rick Deckard could not shoot first. His other main characters did.....

well done Lukeh
It's sunny and getting a bit hot for the first time at the track
Nice Daily lou, Love the photo links. The photos from the air are incredible! The patterns in some of those photos is amazing.
The travel photography is stunning too. Love it. :)

Well, I have to clear my bed so that I can sleep on it after the race, so night everyone!
Now that I'm more awake I can actually be awake enough to properly read the daily ;)
Love the photography links though like I said earlier. Those letters are hilarious.
Mr C, can you try to squeeze a SidepodBoston plug into the debrief please
I have two blog posts planned :)
Remember to fill out the census today folks
I am going to write a post about the G3 and how I found it this weekend but I just wanted to share this screen that was available today
http://amyfulton.posterous.com/i-want-this-at-home
I want this data available to me at home. It's awesome.
oooh, more data. Awesome!
Ooh, pit info
That's a good one
Was broadcast quality good?
it was fab all weekend and then today it was appalling. Because we moved grandstands every day I don't know if its been like that on pit straight all weekend or not. I tweeted to tell them and they said they'd get tech onto it but it didn't get any better. Today if I left it lying in my lap like usual I got audio so buffery I couldn't listen to it, but it was about 90% good if I held it up at chest height so I spent the whole race holding onto it :)
The other big problem today is when 5Live went to Ant in the studio we just got silence, we normally get silence when they go to the news and things so it must be something to do with broadcasting from the uk vs broadcasting from the track. All will be better when Ant is back in Malaysia :)
How's the lurgy Alex, feeling any better?
I'm feeling a bit better but getting through a lot of tissues still.
You should stay home at least until the new laptop arrives
Laptop is arriving at work!
Oh dear, bad planning
Not really. I have to go in tomorrow. So i'll be ok.
Do we know why Mark Pulled in at the end of the start finish lap?
Nope
No one seems to have any idea
Lou was trying her best to get it answered during the forum to no avail
WTF? Sauber have been disqualified aparrently??
Wah?
Said who? I don't see anything on Twitter.
noooo! they did so well!
adamcooperf1 #F1 Big change to the race results... Both Saubers have been excluded for a technical infringement
That's a real shame
And that also allows both Force Indias into the points.
What on earth happened there??
buxton says Article 3.10.1 and 3.10.2 of tech regs.
who wants to tell me what those are? #lazy
ALIA!!!
News from joe:
The FIA has announced that the two Saubers
Very well put. http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/saubers-out/
http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/rules_and_regulations/technical_regulations/8695/fia.html
3.10 Bodywork behind the rear wheel centre line:
3.10.1 Any bodywork more than 150mm behind the rear wheel centre line which is between 150mm and 730mm above the reference plane, and between 75mm and 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between 150mm and 350mm behind the rear wheel centre line and between 300mm and 400mm above the reference plane. When viewed from the side of the car no longitudinal cross section may have more than one section in this area. Furthermore, no part of this
section in contact with the external air stream may have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than
100mm.
Once this section is defined, 'gurney' type trim tabs may be fitted to the trailing edge. When measured in
any longitudinal cross section no dimension of any such trim tab may exceed 20mm.
3.10.2 Other than the bodywork defined in Article 3.10.9, any bodywork behind a point lying 50mm forward of the rear wheel centre line which is more than 730mm above the reference plane, and less than 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side of the car that is situated between the rear wheel centre line and a point 350mm behind it.
With the exception of minimal parts solely associated with adjustment of the section in accordance with Article 3.18 :
- when viewed from the side of the car, no longitudinal cross section may have more than two sections in this area, each of which must be closed.
- no part of these longitudinal cross sections in contact with the external air stream may have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than 100mm.
Once the rearmost and uppermost section is defined, 'gurney' type trim tabs may be fitted to the trailing edge. When measured in any longitudinal cross section no dimension of any such trim tab may exceed 20mm.
The chord of the rearmost and uppermost closed section must always be smaller than the chord of the lowermost section at the same lateral station.
Furthermore, the distance between adjacent sections at any longitudinal plane must lie between 10mm and 15mm at their closest position, except, in accordance with Article 3.18, when this distance must lie between 10mm and 50mm.
aw what a thing to be disqualified over!
I'm guessing someone made a big mistake somewhere either in manufacture or design. It's not the first time they've made such a mistake - they were also excluded from the results in 2000 for flouting similar regulations for the front wing.
it's one of those open-and-shut regulations, i would think. it's either on the limit or over it. i'm a bit surprised this wasn't brought up in scrutineering.
I was watching the wrong thread :(
Though that's not as :( as seeing that the Saubers are out after their brilliant work :_(
definitely seems something i thought they would have noticed by now
Basically, the disqualification is because the back part of the car (Will Buxton is saying the top part of the rear wing) is the wrong shape. And not by enough for initial scrutineering to be alert to the problem.
somewhere deep in slumber steven roy is having dreams of di resta getting a point.
:D
The FIA website is down!
No doubt from the rush of journalists trying to get hold of the stewards decision.
their on event information media page is working for me
I like that Force India scored points but can't feel happy about it due to how it happened.
Rear wing element radius. F1 is so exciting!

#insertmicrosoftjokehere
Lucky there's 2 weeks before Malaysia...
booo at the 7 days of work I have to do before then. Why can't I just be retired.
3rd time lucky in getting in, but no FIA communication regarding the Saubers is in the On-Event section. The infraction is mentioned in the post-race report though.
But you'd be very old, then...
I also have 8 days of work between now and my vacation... Saturday night F1 should be fun. :D
ooh in the USA? that'll be great :)
It also looks like the technical report has been split into three sections (one per day), which would be fine except that the FIA still hasn't updated Friday!
why can't I be young and retired? #lottery
Yup! Hehehe. I do hope they have Speed in the hotel, though... :)
#richhubby? :D
this is also acceptable. as long as he's not old
Jake Humphrey doesn't sound too pleased at the Sauber issue either... ...he'd just got to a restaurant and was sent back to the circuit, presumably to record an explanation for the re-run.
Force India have definitely embraced Twitter - it's taken me two tweets to send a simple congratulatory message to the staff whose accounts' names are known to me...
Twitter has been overrun with F1 this weekend. Good to see
Yup! #bbcf1, Petrov, KERS and Vettel are still trending in the UK.
Race review PING: http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/australian-grand-prix-2011-its-good-to-be-back/
Sauber are appealing over the wing thing.
I also find sauber appealing ;)
:D
I am watching BBC things, I see DC described Bathurst as a circuit not very far from here in Melbourne. Hmm.
It's closer to Melbourne than any other F1 circuit on the calender this year. But then so is the South Pole...
its only 485 miles, so close I might pop up tomorrow :)
Not sure how they'll win there - will be interesting.
:D
Hi again. This Sauber news sucks a bit.
Imagine if you're RG...
Ted tweets:
Sauber's rear wing: FIA say it was effectively too flat, which would allow more air through the moveable rear wing gap, making car faster.
Here's that V8 crash Paul mentioned
http://youtu.be/iFm-vF0WPX8
I'm ill, and the two sauber performances cheered me up greatly. So to wake up to this, really does make me want to hunt down the fia stewards.
it's under appeal, so they may have a chance yet.
When is a decision due?
I go to sleep for 4 hours and the race result changes! poor sauber :(
Both Coyne cars crashed heavily in warm-up a few minutes ago (Bourdais and Jakes)
manipe says the wing is too tightly curved. It is up to you how flat you want a wing to be, the rule was introduced because of the f-duct.
*hug* Get well soon, and yes, this is a bad way for the weekend to end :(
Unknown. The FIA has to turn around and give a due date - all that is known at the moment is that such a date will occur... ...eventually.
not for a few weeks, i'd reckon. any appeal would be heard in Paris.
get well soon!
Oh no!
which is ironic, as no one has it anymore. they're saying the wing rule relates to the DRS.
He is right, they said the radius was too short, ie the theoretical circle was too small
Oh, so not today. *back to bed*
adamcooperf1: What a crazy day. Perez now joins Robert Kubica as a Sauber driver disqualified from 7th on his F1 debut!!!
I wonder if they might consider naming the race the Melbourne Grand Prix instead of Australian given that they are the ones paying for it?
(Victorian Grand Prix would win points for amusement)
I saw something rather amusing earlier this week. The F1 Shop in Meadowhall got sent a census form. Which would make sense except that the census is only meant to record residential properties...
The end of the replay coverage has Jake back at the circuit with the Sauber news. It's so empty!
Agh, waking up to a different result. F1 is definitely back.
i know how you feel! lol
Oh my word, I didn't realise what happened to Nick Heidfeld
http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/110930477/AFP
He had that the entire race apparently...
A side image shows just how much was taken out
Crikey, that'll be a handful!
Can't even imagine how the aero must've felt like for him, no wonder he struggled
Some of the photos on getty are so cool. If lou's still around do you know how they get images that seem to look directly down on cars? I'm assuming they're on a helicopter...? (example from paul gilham)
http://twitter.com/#!/paulgilham/status/51929422193893377
Ahh awesome :)
It looks like scalextric from such a height. Love it!
Petrov's still trending in the UK...
Uggggghhhh! Morning everyone in Sidepodcastland. I am impressed that still get up after less than 6 hours of sleep, but darnit, 10:00 am is still 10:00 am, if you know what I mean.....
My stupid spreadsheet keeps insisting Button drives a Ferrari as well as a McLaren :(
I think I do...
Button in a Ferrari... Lovely thought. :D
I've managed to fix it - Hamilton now has a team-mate...
Or rather he has a team-mate who isn't trying to drive 2 cars at once.
So I hope everyone's had some nice sleeps.
No rest for the wicked they say, not quite sure what i've done to deserve no sleep I say :)
I have had sleeps. Still may be broken though :)
I appologise about the song idea. I may be have been delirious :)
What it needs is a big booming voice like the BBC montages.
Like a voice over thing? Rather than sung? I can do that...
I have a cold so I might be able to boom :)
Could work. Apple have some marvellous build-up type music.
Do you know which area to find it in on GarageBand? Or should I record it clean and send it you?
Record it clean and I'll see what I can find.
And of course you can just chuck it in the bin if it's pants :)

Broken driveshafts for both Fords and Hirvonen broke the rear suspension twice

Coverage starts in the US in 30 minutes and the race roughly an hour (they don't keep to exact times). Sebastian Bourdais will not start, his warm-up crash caused the car to catch fire and he hasn't got a backup. Teammate Jakes also crashed but should be repaired in time.
Sky Sports 3 in the UK if you have that
have left voicemail for the race :)
Just listened to the beginning of the BBC coverage. Can't get enough of Sean Bean, do you think I can get them to play it every week?
Ahh, shame.
woot, did i read steven had issues?
anyone know if rubens blamed tweetdeck for his poor weekend?
All results and standings and nonsense updated now.
i can't believe christine's mac fan has gone silent the minute the race weekend is over. fml.
Nope - I haven't felt tired at any point since the race coverage started, so I'm expecting to stay awake until my normal bedtime.
I'm currently doing a spreadsheet covering what checks the FIA have done on what. I tried doing this last year but kept losing track of what had been checked, so hopefully the spreadsheet will resolve all that.
Well done Kimi!
maybe mercedes did? :D
ah-ha!
He's 9th in the championship. His team is 5th.
No. Rubens said he was defending from Kobayashi and slid into Rosberg, and that he wants to qualify better.
Maybe that noise is Christine's fan downshifting

Mr C and her have a special thing going on ;)
Just woke up. Scanning the Autosport site they are saying a problem with the upper surface of the rear wing.
Not quite sure what the problem is but it is the bottom surface of any wing that creates downforce
Sounds like another song
Don't they just. She's always on about his configuration. Home wrecker.
Something about a gap between two levels of the wing being too large
Just waiting for US coverage to start at half past. Can't believe Sky beat them by half an hour.
steven can you skype me pls?
In all fairness, this is ABC
Basically, Sauber could have got more air into its adjustable wing than permitted.
Yep - I'm too tired
Shame there's no Bourdais for the IndyCar race. He totalled his car this morning
According to Autosport
That has to be the shape of the upper surface as Sauber said in the other story. Having a more concave upper surface can only cause more drag and a less efficient wing or am I being dense?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90302
Christine... I know your favourite thing is when people write comments about sending e-mail... Which is why I'm not going to do that ;)
Very good quality link

#IndyCar
Woah... wait a moment... I have to write down what I do for a living on the Census... I'm not sure I really know?
It does until the adjustable wing is triggered. Then the airflow is channelled more aggressively and the leading edge of the upper wing acts as a scoop, forcing more air through the gap than permitted.
Thanks for the reminder *goes & gets form*.
Alex, I know you've been really poorly but any eta on last week's Giggles Radio being available?
Aha... Actually it's next on my list of things :)
I've been wanting to re-listen, too. But whenever you can. Your fans will simply have to wait until you're better. :)
Stupidly I managed to successfully upload the video over a week ago, but hadn't the capacity to actually produce a working link.
Thanks. Really appreciate it.
:)
alex, we have steven recorded. repeat, we have steven recorded.
hahaha
Me too
Well you have my ridiculousness I think :)
I haven't read up on this at all but I don't see how having a more concave structure would do that. In normal running with the flap in the down position I can only think concave equals drag.
No doubt it will all be made clear. I just think it is a real shame it was not picked up in pre-event scrutineering
Steve Matchett said the same on twitter. He's eager to find out what happened and what the advantage is, too.
The adjustable wing activates when the flap is in the up position. Had Sauber been seeking an advantage down the finishing straight, they could have used a more concave wing to do so. As you say, time would have been lost elsewhere in the lap.
Still think an accidental error in manufacturing or design is more likely.
I have left a one word voicemal but the word is as secret as Amy's man and dog until the show is up
Good afternoon
Snooze kept to a minimum, how are we all?
Hopefully Scarbs will get details and explain it in a way I understand
My friend Helena's brother won a BAFTA this year... so her twitter picture has been the BAFTA in front of her face for a while...

Three words will do

Not too bad after a morning snooze. In trouble with my sister for assuming my mother would have told her about SidepodBoston. Apologized profusely & now all ok.
I also imagine it is a very marginal error
oh.wow!
phew
More or less awake
She looks talented, she has arty hair :)
Heh... She works for your mob. It's her brother who's arty :)
I'd say more if you're typing but...
Just realised if the two Saubers stay DQed di Resta gets a point on his debut
Lewis escaped the wrath of the Herbert?
http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-27th-march-2011/comments#comment-1053232
Depends if it makes sense
Fine, thank you.
:D
No typos so you could be sleep typing ;)
I'd imagine the same.
Sauber race report, a nice mix of happiness and depression: http://sauberinsight.wordpress.com/2011/03/27/the-dark-days-arent-over/
Correct. He's quite pleased about it.
Also, Sauber are holding an investigation into why those two wings failed when the other wings they brought to Australia passed the checks.
Bassano and Janna,
Looks like 40% chance of rain and/or snow right now for Fri/Sat in Boston. :( It's still unseasonably cold here.
I guess that's why they call it New England
Thanks for the heads up
Think I'll be packing my Drizabone then. Thanks
Sounds like a fun thing to have. What is it?
#buildingKai'svocab
Accuweather says on-and-off drizzle on Sat but 2˚ at night
Sounds like something you'd wear when it's drizzling so you won't be chilled to the bone.
It's a coat http://www.drizaboneclothing.co.uk/
It's cold.
Did Prague talk to Boston? What the hell?
I am leading the sidepodcast fantasy racers league :D but only 590th overall :(
Our league is 80th.
It's a bone that people carry around in their pockets so that even if they feel really wet outside they can rub it and feel something drive... Oh no wait... ;)
Cool. Looks like the right choice.
A plane overshot the runway into the water at St Pete, which is a part-airport track
First time ever I remember having cold thighs.
I think it was the only portition of me with one layer
Apart from my face, that was just numb :D

10 minutes to green flag for the 2011 Indycar season
Excited... again
:)
Don't they know there is a race on?
#NeedsMoreKathi&Jordan
Oh dear, doesn't look good
Come on Conway and Simona
Yeah, my hands were hurting at one point because they were so cold, and my head was just like a block of ice.
I'm watching NASCAR and IndyCar at the same time. I love online streaming.
Oh dear
And Dario.
:D
I'm watching this, privileged to get it on a real live TV set.
Oooooooooohh....
Just checked Fantasy Racers. I'm 88th out of 95 in the sidepodcast league. Great start to the season...
St. Pete GP is punctuated by airshows, it's a great race weekend. But I chose not to go. Sinus issues
From here on in, you'll be known as Jerome
:)
You see, in the old days, racing was something you could WATCH, see...
amazing
Come up Mike Conway!!
I forgot. But I wasn't any good last year anyway.
Conway winning would be tantamount to RK winning in Montreal after his crash
Looking like a healthy crowd
I want Kanaan to do well, but I'm just glad he's there at all.
:D
What caused it was I got 2 retirements, 1 dsqualification and backing the wrong Renault..
Gah - a lame duck announcement
Well done!
Engines fired
Silly accident by Bourdais - he should know better than that
My coverage hasn't started yet
Am in as well. Hopefully RHR doesn't have a stormer of the race only to be disqualified for his helmet being 1mm too big.
Should've started half hour ago
Parade lap
Thank you

Is Indycar doing the video like last year, all I can get is live timing
Which is barely readable!
Nope - it got pulled in a very contentious decision
:/
No. Their TV company decided they should scrap it. Morons
Hey Bert, how's Montreal?
...and amazingly, the radio feed and T&S is struggling.
Indiots.
I've done the first version of the FIA check list (but have nowhere to post it and am not convinced it's in presentable condition yet). Among other statistics, I can tell you:
- there were 729 checks done in Australia, not counting the ones conducted on Thursday or Friday.
- the check Sauber failed on was only administered to 9 cars, after the race
- the only cars that got more checks than Pérez's car were those of Vettel, Alonso, Petrov and Alguersuari
It was great with Danica and her F-bombs
I like the pyro in the Indycar. Bernie.....you need fireworks!
Nice and chilly... Something like 22-23 for you. Not a cloud in the sky. So much for Punxatawny (sp?) Phil's guess work.
So there is a chance someone else could have got away with it?
Yeah, I'm in Connecticut under 3 blankets. Phil is dead to me.
Clusterf#$%
Anyone watching the Indycar?
green green green
I'm on a Sky feed which is delayed. All the others are smaller and more stuttery/buffery.
Needs more Bill Murray :D
Marco Andretti upside down, big crash
:)
Saw that comming a mile away, they were concertineing comming up to start line.
He's fine though...
Yes. It's a spot check which on this occasion was only administered on some of the finishers. The problem is that there are so many regulations that the scrutineers cannot check all of them in the time available to them. So they have a bunch of standard checks they do at given parts of the weekend to either all cars or a large proportion of them, plus a selection of other checks at each race that are done to a sample.
I won't spoil then, and won't comment in real time to ruin it for you.
Marco climbs out and is okay, but really angry.
Danica is done for
Looking at the replay, Marco did a Sato...
Situation normal then
Keep going I'll fall back
hehehe
What was Marco thinking?!
Andretti family motto, "It doesn't matter how you play the game, it where you lay the blame"
Not much, looks like...
:)
:)
switched to this one
Thinking? He does that?
I'm using this stream:
http://www.justin.tv/jab01#/w/1013226080
I can't believe that the elder Andretti's felt Marco deserved an F1 ride
Castroneves also implicated, but Marco was still far too fast into the corner
Mario always seemed convinced he was good enough but I just don't see it
Franchiti looks like his in a Lotus, but no
Oh, okay, that's a real Lotus
Sato is 8th, not crashed yet
Kanaan 2nd. Simona 7th
I can't believe the live timing app is SOOOO bad.... It's a video stream of an application running on some guy's workstation.
Yep - the IndyCar app folk have been ripped apart this weekend for a dreadfully shoddy system
I can barely read the names
Yellows breeding yellows
?!?
seriously
Very shoddy.
Why? I mean, just why would a professional racing league think a video stream of an application on someone's workstation was a good idea?
not even bothering with it anymore
Even though the live-tracker is being similarly streamed, it's a nice addition. you can follow the video to LiveStream and open it in a resizaible popup, which makes it less worse..
They are out of ideas
Simona 2nd?
Oh come on guys!!! Is this amateur hour or something?!
Simona 2nd.
It's like 8 year old karters. As soon as it goes green the brain is disengaged
Just nonsense.
double file restart, a nice concept, but needs practice. You see the trailing cars come flying out of the last corner, then have to slam on the brakes as the leader waits to the accel line
They just don't work on street courses. Keep them for ovals.
Yes!
Exactly. It just puts twice as many cars in the same disappearing space
Yes, dump the double file on road courses, and get standing starts
Helio's rejoined 14 laps down
I stepped away for 5 minutes... How many yellows did I miss?
RHR has it absolutely correct
Hundreds
I lost count.
Hunter-Reay slamming the double-file restarts - and quite right too!
RHR has a head on his shoulders. I hear him on the David Letterman Show (or was it Wind Tunnel?) years ago with a solution to driving away with the fuel rig.... Force the jacks to lift when the fuel nozzle is attached... Apparently they have it this year.
tidy race by jakes - up to 8th so far
Yeah the back of the field needs to focus
Must pay more attention to him
He's a good. clever guy.
Amazing - give Danica in 9th huge air time, ignore Simona running well in 2nd...
Grrrr
ugh.
Typical. Haven't seen Simona, Dario, Kanaan, Wilson or Power
Sky mentioned Simona while ABC are taking a break
Wow - Matos had a tough December
:/
Robin Miller reported toward the end of last year that he was at lunch with a big hitter in Indy car racing. During lunch Bernie Eccelstone called the big hitter asking if he knew any girl who knew how to drive a race car. The only name that was given was Simona. Who know's what will happen
Aye - heard that a few times.
Bernie should have known that though
Do you think he really pays attention to Indycar?
Surprised he knows it exists
If he doesn't, he has people around him that will
The Lotus mechanics' overalls look like EJ designed them
Yellow
Kimball knocked a wheel off
Wonder if Kimball locked up on cold tyres - no tyre warmers in IndyCar
Just understeered off. No lock up
Power ahead of Kanaan and SdS with no mention
No surprise. The ABC commentators aren't the best (to say the least)
RHR is running again
what the hell?!!
Half distance. This will surely become a timed race.
most likely i think
What's the time limit for Indycar?
Given the no. of yellow's, it's very possible.
90 mins on a road/street race
Not 2hrs? Their races are usually longer than F1 anyway
IndyCar circuits tend tend be shorter and quicker, so they rarely meet break the 90 minute barrier. Ovals have no time limit
Away from the race for a moment, I've put together little avatars for the race notes that signify which races I'm reporting from and which ones I'll be jotting down from TV. Debuting it this weekend

Last stops done, Dario leading Will and TK..
Mr C
Sidepodcast now has a green tick on a white background. Figure that out
i hate skype.
:)
Good run by Sato - still running 5th
:D
One fairly ill sounding RG coming up.
I'm happy the top 4 are the top 4, especially Simona.
Yeah, good drive, catching 2nd and 3rd
Ramblings of a mad man done.
And why can I not see you on Skype?
:D
Skype is having a great day
The announcer just seriously suggested that Simona forgot she has 20 push to passes left?
Pretty judgmental, mr.
It's ABC - they are morons
maybe it broke
Stupid comment from him. It certainly looks to me like she is paying attention
Correct. He needs to stop telling us all what he thinks she should do and let her just drive! Shut up, dude! He's not giving anyone else that treatment.
I thought that was possible, but the pit reporter just said she's happy with the car and how it's running, doesn't feel she needs it.
He hasn't said Danica should stop sticking her nose into places where her wing gets mangled
Yeah, interesting. But he did say she can't be good at Indy and Nascar at the same time.
I wonder if we will get a late race yellow because there is a crisp bag on the track or similar
I heard that
hehe
can't see that - indycar tend not to resort to those tactics
Hmmm... lapping tactics from Viso there
BBC4 has some F1 documentaries now if you prefer
Simona on for a podium now?
GO Simona!
Dario made that look easy
ohh will have to iplayer those. they look good.
Phoned it in
Good win by Dario. I wonder if TK could get a penalty. Excellent job by Simona (4th) and Sato (5th)
They definitelydo
Dario checked out on lap 4 and no-one saw him after that.
Great job by Kanaan for being with a new team and brand new engineer.
Great job by Simona. A few more of those and it will be Danica Who?
Heidfeld's damage via ManipeF1:

Right everyone, I'm off. I need a shower - will blog later on
:)
Good job by all of those, great performances despite the early distractions of the crashers.
I'm popping over to Mum's, enjoy the BBC docs or the NASCAR :)
Need to dash chaps and chappesses. See you all soon!
Sauber to appeal apparently. Good luck with that
Seconded. So happy for Simona.
If it was Ferrari you would think they had a chance of an appeal working but I doubt Sauber will get the same response
Does the fact our engines are Ferrari give us some hope?
any of your drivers managed by todt's son?
maybe sauber can borrow Ferrari's measuring tape from '99
Perez did come from the Ferrari Driving Academy...
hmm, tenuous.
I'm reading that it's a post f-duct rule on the concave limits of rear wings
they should blame tweetdeck.
None
rg, we don't seem to have voicemail from ya, chap?
They should turn up in Paris with the wing on a jig and argue that a tolerance allowance on an entirely separate part of the car should apply so the car really is legal
:D
Ehh, I am now confused.
did you leave one? we have lukeh's.
Skype has been causing problems all day
He he
Someone on twitter said the appeal was being heard tonight
[Aus time or UK, I don't know]
Yeah I did, bout 5 minutes after you asked for the final call.
bugger, sorry i gots nothing. lemmie log out and in.
Sorry, Crofty saying it won't be heard tonight.
That makes more sense

hmm, got nothing, hopefully it'll drop into the inbox soon. the only tech that failed us all weekend was skype.
A business that stays in existence because 99% of it's calls are free
I tried to leave a voicemail via skype but couldn't. So I did a voice memo on my phone and emailed it to you.
*throws the poxy service out of the window*
sorry all.
No problem. Sending the memo was just as easy.
At least I know it's just not being clueless now
Hi all Anyone else watching BBC4?
Hi andy, I watched the F1 programme yep. Thought it was fantastic.
Will watch the other one on the iPlayer later, gotta get my Brian Cox fix :)
I was. Just switching to 2 for Wonders
just rewatching th Grand Prix. I'm gonna try and see those docos later
How's tricks Andy. Work still a bit manic?
(sigh) no there are no iPad 2s
You must be tired of saying that. Why don't they put a sign up, is it not the Apple way?
Why doesn't someone make an app that says when there are some more?
They had a stock tracker for iPhone 4
Lots of folk wondering why they don't do the same
It's been mad. We had a massive queue on Friday afternoon.
BTW, I have Bluetooth connectivity in my car - I can stream music and take handsfree calls and it's so cool!
Hey, still not feeling 100% so if someone could cover my daily that'd be great. Cheers.

In reality it is about density of atoms/molecules. The closer together they are because they are more densely packed the faster sound travels across it.
Same reason sound travels way faster through a metal bar for example

True
Faster than a jazz bar?

Hi Alison
Hi Alison
Did Lewis make it to the end with his broken car?
Yup
The Saubers did really well too but got disqualified on a technicality
Wha? :(
He just smashed half the floor off as I was heading out the door. Looked pretty nasty....
Illegal rear wing. Too curved
He was lucky and backed off near the end to preserve car
He got out of the car after the race and had a good poke round the damage and then pushed it up to pretend there was no problem. It fell down as soon as he took his hand away though
Awwww Petrov ♥
That's obviously why the McLaren jumpers have speed tape on the pockets :)
:D
Updates? You mean you can update an Android phone? I thought you had to buy a new one.
yeah i can update the software on mine.. i mean i swear its updated before..
Tis a joke, although the support for older devices isn't as good as certain phones I could mention.

There must be some great F1 hypothetical letters.
Very nice of you to volunteer to write the post and give a couple of examples :)

Just had a thought, can Sauber manufacture new wings in 11 days?
Loving the mad world chiptune :)
yay! Thanks!
Dear bassano,
Good question,
Sauber
I've been to a local Italian restaurant for my birthday meal. It was wonderful food - had a salmon pasta dish followed by strawberry cheesecake. Also managed to get in some practise of my Italian skills, though I was stumped by the last waitress... ...who turned out to only speak English.
I'd have thought so. Maybe a week to do the wing and then 2 or 3 days to get it through customs. If worst comes to the worst, they can put on one of the other wings they've got (apparently all the Sauber wings they had passed except for the two that were on the actual cars...)
Happy Birthday!
other wings in the garage complied with the regs.
Sounds like a good night out
Other Sauber wings?
Got to love a good italian place :)
spare rear wings.
The other wing is faster than you
I still can't fathom how the two just so happen racing fail but the others don't. They have to be identical, surely.
Dunno. Odd really.
unless the act of racing bent them somehow, i agree.
Didn't realise that, how bizarre.
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to Alianora,
Happy Birthday la Canta :)
Distortion from the actuator?
could be, but it's carbon fibre, right?
I still blame Herbert.
Off to bed, see you all soon.
Possible
Do they get to change wings between sessions at all? When would they have been checked last?
NightcRG
It's all random, not every test is on every car
Scrutineers to blame not stewards
Maybe the Red Bull culprit sat on the Sauber too
I know, but I need someone to blame.
anyone mentioned tony's blog?

Sad to see Renault have joined Virgin in not offering their podcast on iTunes
Shan't bother then
It's all a bit fishy to me, especially when a Ferrari is allowed to benefit from it.
I'm not keen on these team ones anyway.
My birthday was yesterday, but thank you :)
Herbert is British, di Resta is British. I'm telling you it all makes sense.
Turd Polish.
Yeah sorry, haven't been around much in between the F1 bits.
RG's cracked it :)
Yes. There were spare wings in case the intended wings broke, which makes me think "manufacturing error" rather than an inherent design flaw (which will be a small relief).
How much of a benefit would the tighter radius of curvature be?
Still 2 secs faster than Virgin
Apparently the radiator was unexpected vibration from the Renault lump, fix is planned already
Very true. I found a good one in the place where my Italian class is (which not only serves tasty food, but one of its staff is a classmate), and it's good to see my home town also has a good place. It's got a good selection of seafood and vegetable-based pastas and pizzas and the price is quite reasonable.
I don't think it would be a benefit
'You can't built Rome in a day'.
You've had 18 months Fernandes, you are still slower than the rest of them, and heck I'm sure Rome could have easily been built in 18 months.
#reallyoffnow
You have to eat at an Italian person's house.
Though it's better when they are there as well
i was more interested in this bit: finally now the court case is coming to an end we will finally announce 2 sponsors
They have to be as identical as possible, but a one-off minor error wouldn't disqualify the component unless of course the error itself breached another regulation.
genii capital and lotus cars!
:D Thank you for the song!
So? I would expect a team with Mike Gascoyne, two decent drivers, a Renault engine and a Red Bull Gearbox to be Toro Rosso/Force India pace personally.
Regardless, last year the new teams were harping on about being new, just struggling to get going, wait till next year etc.
All fine, but then don't show any progress in year 2, blame the suppliers again and then trot out some crap about a 5 year plan. Remember this guy apparently told Proton he would be winning races last year.
It's better for practicing the language.
:)
True ;)
There were 4 stewards in there - even if Johnny wanted to help his countrymen he'd have to have persuaded at least one other steward to agree with him.
three wasn't it?
I'm unsure how to answer in Tony's vote
Do I feel
Malaysian?
Malay?
Chinese?
Indian?
[Don't forget the census folks]
I feel tired.
Are you sponsored by the government today or something?
I'm very civil minded
I don't want us running out of pubs
hooray, Singapore tickets are now paid for.
And I should be able to reveal the dog to you today :)
A small one down the start/finish straight - and a minor disadvantage elsewhere on the circuit. It would have been swings and roundabouts, with the peaks and valleys increasing the larger the infringement (I suspect from what's been said that the infringement was small).
?
Where do you think the data goes?
:D It would be a nice thing to do one day. However, I only know one Italian person well enough to ask and I doubt my teacher would let me eat at home - the rest of the class would have to tag along and there probably wouldn't be space for everyone...
To the people that make Who do you think you are.
Only just seen the Sauber news!
Gutted for the boys :(
Was real nice to see them on the forum together though :)
You don't need to know them well!
Looking forward to this new Where's Wally book. http://twitpic.com/4e2mhs
That's a relief
eh?
he's had a shave and it's just wrong i tells ya.
True. And Stephen Fry
in the track walk video he had stubble.. so maybe he just shaved for quali?.. erm.. for some reason..
True!
Aerodynamic profiterole for the dynamics of the drag reduction system
#whitmarshspeak
proficiency!!!
oh lord.
Mmm, profiterole.
To a US based defence company who will probably let their government see it. Mind you there are an unsettling number of legal reasons for UK govt departments to breach confidentiality of the census data.
Four. There's four names at the bottom of all the paperwork the FIA's been issuing - Paul Gutjahr, Johnny Herbert and two Steves (Stringwell and Chopping).
:D
Perhaps for the same reason swimmers shave their legs?
:D i may do a blog post about how i made them.. cause their soo easy.. also.. LPG has just reminded me about how awesome these are.. so i may be making those out of them..
*puts face on laptop*
Woah.
Cos they look better in a dress?
Chief Census-Filler is in bed so I can't check progress today.
Swimmers don't keep their legs in a crash helmet
i had them when i was in normandy 5 years ago and oh my goodness i can still remember how awesome they are :)
Profiterole blog post. Yum
To the libraries so they can answer people's questions about their forebears in 2111!
You need to know them well enough to know that their house is in the same country as you are...
That sounds quite tasty (yes, profiteroles were an option on the menu tonight)...
will have to wait a bit tho.. need to make them tomorrow while at uni :)
Lou's yummy looking profiteroles were on my typing mind, words should stop being so similar :)
No, to save weight (swimmers also do it for aero reasons and in some cases to avoid damaging the new-generation full-body costumes that are surprisingly fragile).
True :D
Wouldn't that be fluid dynamics?
Hydrodynamics
For the bit below the surface it would be. Both fluid dynamics and aero count for something in swimming.
Or that.
Aero doesn't really have an effect at such low speeds
In theory, no. In practise, yes, especially for people who are proficient at racing dives (which I'm not) or have poor arm technique. Fluid dynamics are definitely more important, but aero does count to an extent.
Am attempting an early night
See ya peeps
Night Bassano
Goodnight!
Night Bassano
Thommo is chatting to me on twitter, second time he's replied to me today!! wohooooo!!
You are so popular
:D
(hearts) F1 photographers being on twitter :)
i am not liking being back at work

Everyday you work is a day closer to malaysia :)
Hahaha, points for Timo

i forgot Amy was going to Malaysia too... *jealous*
I'm even looking forward to blogging it which is amazing! I'm also really looking forward to revealing my plan because as time goes on I'm more convinced I'll need lots of your help.
We had some bad news about an ex colleague this morning so everyone is a little sad so i haven't been able to share my stories from the weekend as the time isn't right.
if you tell us now we'll be able to help you for longer :P
aw no, i'm sorry to hear that :( I'm sure tomorrow everyone will want to know the exciting stories and you can relive the whole thing again :)
I'd love to tell you now but you can't help yet! Hurry up Facebook!
but we can try! ;)
Sorry to hear that :(
I can give you the rundown now so you're mentally prepared.
Basically I need to get more likes and comments on a photo than other people get on theirs. One guy is currently at 102 likes so we have a lot of work to do! My photo hasn't been put up yet though so no one can like it yet :(
Is it a photo of a dog?
nope its a photo of me and cardboard heikki.
the competition is also judged on the creativity of the photo so after seeing the other entrants all posed by the same backdrop i went outside the tent to where the cardboard drivers were :)
You should get Lukeh to photoshop in Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Fangio etc That would be creative
how did that make you 90 minutes late?
the photo has already been sent :)
Because I appear to be telling you all, basically the prize I am trying to win is flights to the Korean GP for me and Pamela, accommodation there, and paddock passes as guests of Air Asia where you'll spend the weekend in the Lotus garage, blogging and tweeting about your experience.
Can you think of anyone who would be better suited to live tweeting from the Lotus garage? I think not.
We must rally the troops and get the sidepodcorrespondants to Korea!
because the photo had to be taken at the Air Asia Fanzone and you had to be waving their chequered flag in it. But because their staff were late the flag was locked away inside.
Wonderful stuff :)
ooooooooh!
I wonder if we can get TWiT to send all their audience to vote in return for us watching the android show
I'm guessing because they want you to blog and tweet about it they want someone who can be down with social media which is what all the liking rubbish is about.
The guy who is winning has over 800 facebook friends so that scares me but I'm quietly confident that with the reach of twitter, facebook and sidepodcast we can absolutely smash it.
what do you win?
Keep up!
I already commented that :D
Wonder if we can get @ausgrandprix to vote
oooh, korea. righto :)
I'm afraid after building bridges I destroyed them all by relentlessly complaining about the gross bathrooms and the stupid broken big screens :D
so is this the sparklotus twitter account? that's such an awesome idea.
not my first choice of race, but freeeeee! and paddock passessss!
I'm not sure if its anything to do with the sparklotus thing, it just says blogging and tweeting 'as the air asia uber fan'
They might tie that in together, who else would be going to Korea!
The weird thing is the fanzone was in the city so all the actual fans were at the track. Its why we had to make a special trip there and why by the looks of things they dont have very many entrants, theres only 9 photos on the page at the moment. They're on www.facebook.com/airasiaaustralia by the way.
woooaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!
Amy, we'll get you there. :)
after seeing how #justiceforamy worked I'm sure we can get a few hundred people to click 'like' it only takes 20 seconds :)
Blimey!!
It's such an amazing competition.. i will cry with jealousy though.
I'll like your image if you promise to say hi.. actually talk to a photographer while in the paddock for me :)
I talked to one the other day! But I don't think its someone you know :(
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/mercedes-gp-offer-live-telemetry-direct-from-the-circuit
by Korea you'll know more photographers, i promise you :)
... when i get my act together anyways :)
awwww timo!
@pauldirestaf1 Hi Paul congrats for scoring a point in your first race !!! Well done
points!! :)
the one i was speaking to was originally a specialist ski jumping photographer. I thought that was a very odd specialisation :)
right then, i better write a daily.
woah!! what was his name? alot of f1 photographers start of photographing other sports and then agencys send them to a GP and they find out they are kinda good at it :)
No, me!
you're editing?
Yes I am.
i didn't catch his name but through ski jumping he made friends with the head of mtv3 in Finland and they were like "we need you to go to all of Heikkis races"
Did he only work six weeks a year?
wooaaahh!! interesting. :) i love hearing stories about how F1 togs got into the sport :)
That's pretty cool. :)
oh my god.. i'm scared to post this here just in case it means minus points for Jenson.. but...
just...

Just noticed now - Red Bull has little to no Renault branding, with most being replaced by Infiniti. The engines are still called Renaults, but will a rebadging soon follow?
