We've been counting it down for far too long, and now the season has begun. We're into the best part of the weekend now, practice sessions almost done, qualifying and the race still to come. There is no need for a countdown anymore, and that being the case, it's worth checking out what the biggest counter of the off-season has to say.
Let's go!! Start your engines and welcome the 2011 season! Oh yeah!!
That'll do it.
So, what is underway today? We have Free Practice 3 and Qualifying coming up very shortly. Both will have live threads here on Sidepodcast, and will be covered by the Factbyte Factbox as well.
Later on in the day, it's time for the 2011 Boat Race, the annual battle along the River Thames between the Oxford and Cambridge rowing crews. Assuming I can wake up in time, (the coverage begins at 3:45pm on the BBC), then I'm hoping to Factbyte Factbox that as well. Busy weekend!
Back to F1, and if you're looking for more ways to follow the sport that you love, Mr C has rounded up some of the new initiatives from teams for the 2011 season. With redesigned websites and live telemetry, it's hard to keep up. I do particularly like the Lotus videos though, it's great to go behind the scenes like that.
I'm considering handing out points to Lotus for those videos when Christine's Rankings returns next Tuesday. Although it's still a few days away, now seems like a good time to remind you all that I'm counting on you to point out things I may have missed. There are so many tweets, photos, videos and news articles floating around now that the season is underway, it's impossible to keep up. If you want your favourite team or driver to be counted, let me know what you've spotted!
Now, I think it's time for a nap. Our sleep schedules are all kinds of messed up but that doesn't even matter. Today we'll find out who's on pole for the first GP of the year, and that is worth sacrificing sleep for.
hullo new day.
it's a new dawn, it's a new day - Nina Simone, and Muse
(am definitely going now)
(no, really)
Is everyone getting some pre-session sleeping?
#tumbleweeds
Just about to go and grab 2 hours
am staying up and maybe napping between sessions.
It's a small gap, only an hour and a half
Half an hour if you want to see the run up to qualy
Wish I could nap and guarantee I'd wake again. Think I'll just sleep sometime tomorrow afternoon and be fresh for the race then :)
I'm not sure what I'm doing. I want an early night so I wake at 5 although I don't feel the need to sleep.. but I don't want to start anything in case I stay up too long!
am reading this paywalled autosport column, but if what button says is true, i am gong to be loving these tyres: http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3382
...such is the high degradation rate, a driver stopping earlier than a rival will comfortably pass him as fresh tyres will be worth 3-4s per lap. However, the earlier you stop, the longer a final stint you are consigning yourself to. Should you run out of rubber in that final stint, you're a sitting duck. "In the closing stages I think there is going to be a huge amount of overtaking," says Button.
true. red bull it is then.
I hate the if he is right. And I think he is
Sounds great
Time for sleep.
See you all in 2 hours
We ought to see some teams opt to take the hit in the middle part of the race and change to new tyres with 10-12 laps left... sadly some teams are still locked in the mentality of protecting themselves against the opposition so they'll probably all eat the tyres before then.
See ya in a bit Steven
bye
ooh, calendar says it's alia's birthday today. happy birthday!
No quick nap beforehand? It's a long way to 7am
Happy Birthday Alia!
not tired really.
Same
Happy Birthday Alia
@KataHyde: @IsabellDoreen you wanna come for tea (and internet)?

He he
iPaditis from BBC Comedy on Youtube
Relaxing vodafone style. I get to watch careers cup in a "sling"not quite sure what that means!
Sounds odd
Mr c?
I can't listen to the song on the iPhone. Any ideas?
Hehehe yep. Shall report back
the pirelli song? which page are ya playing it on?
Tried just from the web page
hmm, seems okay on my ipod. can you play it from the itunes store?
If you right click on the file in the grey box on the right, open in a new page and it will play after it loads. Just tested
Press and hold, I mean
right click on an iphone? i wish.
Sorry, holding is the new right click :D
No :-(
Never mind will try when I get home
maybe large files are blocked over 3g?
Should be a 20mb and the file is only 1.1
20MB limit, that is
Hehehe check this out on the main straight
http://t.co/2RQ67iX
Aha! Good point
want!
Want it for the race!
Looks comfy
Paul, try this
It's the way to watch f1 I tells ya
A cool. Will try when out of the sling
Yay thanks bassano that worked
*looks at ipod in a baffled manner*
I would blame iPhone madness
Ooh, I can get it to work from the web page now, you have to hit the play button a couple of times and it mysteriously disappears for a few seconds before loading
Do we know if HRT will have 2 cars today?
They are claiming they will
it doesn't on mine though. i did upgrade to 4.3.1 though.
I'm doing that now for both devices
Kk
I feel a bit sorry.
Now I want a tshirt with " your logo here" or "this us a great spot"
Just introduced brother and his wife to Christine awesomeness. Laughs and very impressed
What about Felipe Baby
That comes later :-)
just watched the "bad guy" Vodafone ad with Hamilton and Button, LOL
Did I miss something? I thought it was quite unfunny, didn't realise it was supposed to be funny. Maybe I need to see it again
well, it was aimed at the Spanish fans
Yeah, just getting the Alonso angle. Not sure it's gonna do Vodafone any favours over there
hadn't seen it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoaOKpULdg8&feature=player_embedded
awesome.
I do like FF4's Paste & Go option
Bless Hamilton!
apparently Lewis came in the back way today. Boo. Almost everyone else good with signing today.
Here's a post and a poll: http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-australia-2011-free-practice-3
I was already doing so at the time. 4 hours' sleep and I feel as bright as a Button :)
Mathematically taking the hit in the last phase is better.
Thank you very much, Mr C, Pat and Bassano :)
am hour to kill til 2nd tour. Paddock will be a lot busier this time!

We have a winner for my pre-season competition :D
aw the fanvision people are so nice :)
@fanvision_f1: @amyfulton We love the @5LiveF1 crew!! Our favourite too! And you of course Amy - remember meeting you in Singapore last year, lovely!
madness! :)
Aww :)
Lovely stuff :)
Amazing how everyone seems to know her. She's not quite as famous as Alex, but she's darn well trying. :)
certainly not spending as much money as Alex
Probably because there's not as many races to go to for you. ;)
F1 isn't the only live TV I have on this weekend. My farm has a mare on it that's 2 weeks late for giving birth to a foal...
Apparently the BBC are starting, predictably, at Red Bull.
which is why I'm not as famous :)

Hey Pad, come join us in the Qualifying thread

I can smell mum cooking bacon downstairs. But bed is so comfortable...

See ya peeps
hmm breakfast was good. Now 2 hours until we pick up the car!
righto, we must sleep before we die. goodnight.
Lukeh maybe you could send your mum a text message saying that you would be happy to exchange one hug for a bacon sandwich in bed?
Mmmmmmm bacon
Standing next to the main straight for quali was awesome. Especially watching the rear wings.
A great experience, looking forward to the race tomorrow.
"Later on in the day, it's time for the 2011 Boat Race, the annual battle along the River Thames between the Oxford and Cambridge rowing crews. Assuming I can wake up in time, (the coverage begins at 3:45pm on the BBC), then I'm hoping to Factbyte Factbox that as well. Busy weekend!"
gonny miss the race due to Wales vs. England but I'm recording it. hahaha
How strange. No stewarding decisions have been posted yet on the FIA's website despite at least 2 pit lane speeding penalties being awarded yesterday.
At one point today, all the non-promoted trending topics on Twitter in the UK were F1-related. Go us!
Kovalainen's rear wing got stuck open. I thought those things were meant to get stuck shut?
After all, who else would get up so early? :D
Same - I'm not sure I believe that story - isn't there a cut off switch?
You'll also see Legard's 2011 debut! :)
He's on the R5L, not the TV commentary though.
It came out of the Lotus press release, so I have to believe the story, but yes, there should be a kill switch. The trouble is that the compulsory kill switch for it alos kills other stuff, including the engine.
Radio suits him better anyhow. Wanna hear it, just to find out if it helps him get better.
Point taken :D
Yeah probably. So in the first race the main safety feature of the system has been proven to be bogus.
I am concocting a plan I will need Sidepodcasts help with. More details later :)
Should probably point out that even with a catastrophic loss of downforce he was still faster than Trulli, both Virgins and both HRT's!
Look Amy, we already got you one pit tour already ;)
thats because he's amaaaaaazing.
no, you got me two :D
A thought, if it was stuck open, wouldn't he have done a Sutil?
TWO! :D
Not necessarily. Sutil spun because of the sudden change in downforce.
Sutil went wide because of the sudden change in downforce.
Ah, fair enough.
Yes. Awesome Heikki. Not-so-awesome safety feature.
You have tasted justice, and it is delicious! :D
I wonder what you're planning now...
Ah, yes.
I need to get the pieces in place before I reveal the details :)
It would if it had happened at a point where the downforce was needed and/or Heikki hadn't realised what was going on before the downforce was required. While those two possibilities cover a lot of the lap, they need not have covered all of it, especially if the Lotus has a notification system for such failures and/or a wing position light.
Well, whatever it is, I am sure we will be happy to help.
He would have realised and adjusted accorfingly.
Right, off to pick up our new car. See you all later!
ooh how exciting! bye!
Enjoy!
Hope it goes well!
LOOK LOOK LOOK AT MY AMAZING PHOTO
http://twitpic.com/4dfbn7
*ahem*
Out of the three photos I've had with Heikki in my life, this is my favourite :)
:D What a lovely pair of smiles.
thats why I like it, he's got a nice smile and I don't look completely awful as so often happens on that angle.
ooooh I've been Suttoned!
and my flag is juuuust visible in this one :) http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d11aus1213.jpg
and my hat is in this one :D http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d11aus1230.jpg
Was one of their photographers stalking you stalking Heikki?
The FIA have announced the 2 HRT cars will not be allowed to take part in the race tomorrow.
It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? :P :D
every driver that came along the fence had about 40 photographers with them, I knew I'd be in some photos somewhere!
This one that I tweeted http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d11aus1223.jpg shows just how crazy it gets. You can see my flag but you can't see me because I was buried! Buried by arms and programmes!
Unless they get special dispensation for 1 more day of testing, they're doomed. We'll probably just have 22 cars on the grid by season's end.
That makes sense, disappointing as that will be for Tonio and Narain.
Meanwhile, could the FIA please update their site? It still doesn't have yesterday's pit lane speeding penalties in the correct section!
They've still got their six days of straightline testing they can use in-season. And the day of standard testing per driver change...
:D Awww! You'll have to pester them - I'm not sure anyone else has noticed, TBH. :)
How? They're not on Twitter and I don't know who in the organisation to email...
Per driver change? So if they switch from Narain to Klien and back to Narain, they get 2 days?
If not, that's 8 extra days, tops. I wonder if that's enough. Then again, it's not so much lack of testing that is the issue. Rather, it's the lack of funds. Or lack of everything. Depends on how you see it.
You'd know that better than me, quite honestly. Try a search engine.
1 extra day per new driver. So Narain -> Klien -> Narain would be 1 day, but Narain -> Klien -> A N Other -> Narain (which is permitted because a team may have 4 drivers per season) would be 2 days.
That only gives me the email for technical problems with the site. Lack of updates is not a technical problem but a people problem.
Yup, so 8 days max. Narain isn't much good, so they can switch him round while keeping Tonio in. Problem is, going testing also incurs costs. Is it something they can afford?
Would this work for you? [email protected]
it was so awful sitting at T1 today and just watching the HRT get in every single persons way :(
Hmmm. I wonder if they can get special dispensation to just run their 2010 car. At least that's reliable...
ooh ooh ooh also it pains me to admit it but the two tone mclaren hats look nicer in person.
I suspect not.
Doesn't matter to me - I won't see them in person, so I still think they're ugly. :D
I've just given it a try. It will be interesting to see the response...
It really was. Me thinks it might be over. Who is lining up to buy I wonder?
Colin, I'd guess. But probably nobody else (I know I can't pay for an F1 team, for a start...)
Or we could be going through the new team process all over again...
Not if Bernie has his way
Stefan? Is he still around?
Not seen Stefan for a few months. Perhaps he's trying to persuade the FIA that he's Hermann Tilke and therefore can have a Serbian Grand Prix...
Hehehe :-)
heheh we walked past the One HD guy in the paddock as he was doing a live cross. I noticed us because I saw Pamela's bright yellow backpack :D
Morning guys, yay for the Heikki and Amy photo!
I had a meeting for work in Indianapolis this week. On the way back, I stopped by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. I only had my point-n--shoot camera, but I took a couple pictures I thought y'all might enjoy.

I took a picture of my moment of national TV fame ;)
http://amyfulton.posterous.com/i-was-on-the-telly
I only could find me because I knew I was there!
Amy! you got Suttoned! did you take a photo of the photographer? :)
Oooooh my brother has bought Top Spin 4! Yaaaay! finally have a tennis game to play.
there are photographers in heaps of my photos, there were so many there.
I only chatted to one, he was an American dude but he was working for a Finnish company so the main request from his employers was lots of pictures of Heikki. Sounds like a good job to me!
In sutton photos, on tv, photod with heikki, getting the attention of teams...
amy is taking over :)
ohhhhh!!! :)
you just wait until you hear of my secret plan tomorrow!
How exciting :D
does it involve kidnapping Jenson?... or maybe sabotaging Vettel's car?
nooo it does not involve this race at all.
Intriguing... *strokes non-existant beard in wonder*
Aha! Private jet with Tony to Malaysia right ?
you got me!
ohh i get it, you're kidnapping Jenson in Malaysia.. very sneaky :)
:D
Hehehe.
But if you kidnap Jenson, he can't get another championship...
What if he wins the championship by singapore and Amy kidnaps him then?
That's fine then :)
Is that like Lewis's?
Aha! My stupidly long recording has finally reached qualifying. I wanted to hear this DC and Martin thing :)
did you see the speed of that red bull? we can return him when Mclaren give him a super car..
Caaaa Ching !
Personally I think we should get steven to find contact details for NASA to help the cause out
maybe Amy has a plan to shave Lewis!!
Don't kidnap Jenson. If you do, we'll just have to hear snarky comments from Bernie saying stuff like "If Jenson drove faster he wouldn't have been kidnapped"
And then Bernie would get kidnapped a month or two later and then he'd have to do a watch advert about it!
Nightmare!
Exactly!!
when Bruno was signing today one of the guys next to me told him he had a nice watch. Bruno said thanks, then he said 'can I have it? Just tell them you lost it' and Bruno said 'so I'll go inside, and I'll come back with lots of passes and watches? OK'
I like it when drivers have a sense of humour :)
Awwww. I miss bruno :(
He was most excellent today. I'd say the only driver who was friendlier was Vettel. Considering he's the world champion and has a lot of demands on his time he is amazing
Ooh that's good to hear.
I recognise http://yfrog.com/h7d2vejwj that interior. They are back at 2 Doors Down!
I do still feel that it must be the silly Red Bull management people are the problem for him not him.
My first game of Top Spin 4 and Andy Murray has beaten me. It's OK though, I felt bad for him losing in the first round at several tournaments so I let him beat me see, and now he'll do better with that new found confidence :)
he signed for everyone and was smiley and grinning the whole time, very chatty with anyone who talked to him too.
He was asked about Kinky Kylie and whether it's named after Kylie Minogue, he said 'it is when I'm in Australia' :D

Tut tut, Johnny won't stand for no nonsense this weekend!
I'm impressed it appears he listened to my 'be nice to Lotus' instructions.
:)
Hello.
how is it 11pm already? this was meant to be my early night! I'm not ready! I'm still sorting photos, let alone getting my blog done.
Excellent :)
While ignoring Newey too
thats how I roll #lotusfo'life
Do the blog on Monday evening, don't want to be too tired for the GP.
thats the new plan. I shall still upload a few photos though :)
Oops. Someone wandered from a VIP pit tour and broke Webber's air box! Could you get another tour at Mercedes..?
http://www.smh.com.au/sport/motorsport/overzealous-fan-nearly-sends-red-bull-spinning-20110326-1cb4b.html
I've lots of blogging to do as well, perhaps this afternoon is the time to do it.
some of the people you see on tours make me facepalm.
I wonder if I broke this bit? http://twitpic.com/4dh2fk
Wow :)
carbon fibre is strong right? because i did kind of bash it into the ground a little bit haha.
Well it's not Jenson but it's a start :)
Lou must have possessed my camera from afar because I just found a photo of Mikey and I have no recollection of taking any photos of him.
The mayor is explaining why he's going to the grand prix.

and now I'll go to bed :)
Sweet Heikki dreams.
Night Amy!
I'm really, really enjoying this Top Spin 4 game. The presentation values are absolutely top notch, even down to the umpire getting annoyed at the crowd and telling them to quieten down :)
I'm re-watching Qualifying in the telly. Still expecting Legard to speak when the FOM intro finishes...
Been out this morning and got a Freeview HD box. £30 at my local Tesco.
Watching re-run of Quali *drools*
Nice!
Ooooh, nice one. Good price.
DC and Brundle are pretty good!
I was worried about DC, but they seem to be unfounded thankfully.
Yeah I know what you mean, he seems to have done alright from what I've watched with quali now at the moment so far which is a nice surprise.
I mean, it's not going to make me swap from 5 Live but it's good to know BBC may have found a good alternative line up
At least if 5 live doesn't work for some reason, you know the backup's not going to be too bad! :)
Yeah they're not bad.
I didn't know you could do replays on the F1 timing app.
Now I know I can record Quali and still get timing
Did anyone else have problems getting Live timing...
Both of us here couldn't get past Java....
Weird....
There were a few problems during qualifying I believe, at one point Java wouldn't even load for me either but when it did it was all jumbled up most of the time I found
Ours died about halfway through qualifying and never came back.
That's a relief... at least it's a general issue...
Impressed with the HD....
Well, the FIA partly listened to me. They've posted the FIA communications... ...but not for the day I requested!
Yes. It wouldn't accept my login details!
Bravo Sebastien and Bruno :)
I'm guessing they may not upload it at all. :D
:D
That would be typical...
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-the-2011-boat-race
i think f1 broke me. two day f1 weekends please.
It's earth hour and we have floodlit racing in both Abu dhabi (GT1) and Dubai (GT Horse)
Hahahaha :D
And we've got mass live-commenting of the boat race. Earth Hour could have been better timed...
I return to the daily from the boat race with bits of Dr Who news. Apparently there was a bit of an easter egg with the small preview trailer airing on BBC2 including an alien that the BBC1 trailer didn't have, wierdly enough.
Also Steven Moffat has made a quick prequel to the first episode of the new series!! Eeeek!!
Ok I'm off to Dad's to do a bit of 'babysitting', will bring ipad and netbook in case I stay over instead of coming back at midnight. May comment from there tonight.

Yo folks
One hopes you all had fun with qualifying this morning.
:)
Evening :D
hi alison
Better head back from the pub then :)
Nice to see the Hispania's on the front row of the grid for the race.
!!!!!!
Does that mean I should stay?
I mean, i now feel I should stay...
Hah! It means you better RUN home!!
A very happy birthday to Leonard Nimoy. Spock turns 80 today!!
So, the F1 has gone HD. FOM and/or the Beeb is still formatting the on screen graphics in "4:3 safe" positions. Fail?
M.B. + D.C. Win?
Decent enough job on day 1. You could clearly hear Brundle getting more confident as the session went on, but realistically it far, far, far to early to give a definitive "yes" or "no".
Buhhh!!
IndyCar's timing and scoring page as well as the radio feed has been dieing all weekend, but I suppose this is an improvement on live streaming of the event....
Just had some magnificent chocolate cake with cream topping, followed by presents: a box of Roses and a book of funny computer jokes. I am very happy :)
Happy birthday to Leonard!
:)
Yeh, the graphics during quali were annoying with the "tower" of times kept blocking the action, hopefully during the races it will be OK...
... also, I am glad they are still like that as I am still relying on 4:3 terrestrial tv on one of my TVs ....
Fortunate for me - I still have a 4:3 television...
Then I propose that broadcasters run 2 feeds, one SD - 4:3 safe and one HD - non 4:3 safe. Otherwise, letterboxing for the 4:3 feed. This comes from a 4:3 only watcher (still waiting for the right one!)
Good news that the FIA did not allow the HRT request for exemption from the 107% rule?
Been watching a brilliant History of Variety Acts show on BBC2 this evening, recommended watch. Morcambe and Wise never, ever, ever get old.
I think so. If it had just missed, I'd have expected an exemption for reasons of keeping the grid full, but at that speed Karthikeyan wouldn't even have been classified and Liuzzi would have only been in the classification by half-a-second per lap. Since the hard tyres have to be used for both wear and regulatory reasons and cost a whole second new, and the soft tyres will in any case wear out, it is highly unlikely that Tonio could have been classified in the results either.
The stewards are administrating a race, not a test. They cannot be expected to let Hispania in just because they need test miles.
I think a better solution would be for Hispania to petition the FIA to let them miss the next 3 races and perhaps persuade them to allow a couple of days of full-track testing in exchange for effectively missing 6 days of running. This would allow them to be better-prepared for when they rejoin the action in Spain and should at least let them join the back of the pack.
Wouldn't that exclude them from the championship?
I think for once Kolles is fighting a battle he cannot win. It's one thing to keep Jordan and other squads just afloat before they get sold on, but if the HRT cannot even qualify, then it will be much harder to keep them up.
No, because the current version of Concorde allows all teams to miss three races a season subject to FIA approval. If done without approval, they face FIA penalties but only face automatic exclusion if the number of missed races rises to four.
The controversial bit would be extracting the test days in exchange. However, I think they could argue it would be to the benefit of the sport as a whole if they were permitted to do that deal, especially if it was used as a test of the idea of bringing back limited in-season testing (a popular idea in certain quarters that nobody quite dares discuss - if the team with the lowest budget can benefit from a modest regime, then future seasons could see all the teams allowed a little more testing).

agreed
woops - quote fail on my part
Great job by Mike Conway and Justin Wilson to get top 5 in qualifying in IndyCar at St Pete - shame no one could see it (or hear it, or make out the timing and scoring)...
:/
Evening all
Just trying out Firefox 4 and so far I like it.
Since Mr C arranged my transfer to MotorSport I think it is only fair I plug them. Their next podcast victim is none other than Allan McNish. Can't wait.
http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/2011/03/23/allan-mcnishf1-podcast/
evening steven
McNish should be a fantastic interview! I always love his enthusiasm and obvious passion for what he does. Plus he knows how to stuff a car and then bring it to victory, perhaps the best drive I have personally witnessed.
You were at that race?
We live commented it here. Great recovery drive. His move on Klien towards the end of the race must be one of the most determined passes I have ever seen. I don't think it would have mattered how fast Klien's car was or what he did with it McNish was going past him.
Happy birthday Alia :-)
No, watched it flag-to-flag. I am about 1000 miles north.
Like Allan said (or there abouts) "Fix the car and I will get us back in front"
Thank you :)
Happy Birthday
Bonne fête!
Thank you, Steven and Bery :)
He was very determined that day. I think if I was Audi I would be tempted to do something to the car to guarantee he crashed it like that every race.
Sorry, Bert
I think it's in Truth in 24 where we seem him do a commentary about an on-board lap of La Sarthe, but seen from the outside, behind the camera. His passion is just fantastic. (or his showman skills, and if so, he deserves an Oscar!)
By the way Ali, the best birthday wishes from here too.
:D
I don't think it is an act. I think that is just how he is.
Thank you, Leigh :)
I certainly hope it is, it would destroy the myth.
N.P. Alianora
I get the same feeling from listening to JYS and Moss. There are not many out there that do it that well.
That's completely understandable. Simply because a challenge is impossible doesn't mean failing at it doesn't hurt.
Todd from Formula1blog.com interviewed him last year before Petit Le Mans
In this case the drivers are far from the guilty part. Again HRT fails to do the appropriate pre-season work and tries to do the minimum to get in. Collin, This Space is not Cool.
Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.
Hardly Kolles' fault.
Absolutely!
As much as I like him, Massa's been rubbish this weekend. Needs to find his groove quickly.
Yeah, one of my podcasts, great as usual.
I don't think the 0.6 seconds will have him half as anxious as the fact he nearly didn't make Q2.
Then Webber?!
I'm wondering if a team change might do him good.
In what sense? There doesn't seem to be any sense of organisation or purpose at the team and that's what the team leader is meant to provide (at least if, like Colin, he's focused on the systems side).
"Ouch" is all I can think of
McNish went through the JYS charm school
If it continues in the next couple races, then Massa's head will drop further...
Wait and see though, Massa has never had a good Australian GP
Webber tends to panic less than Massa - I think Mark will only get worried if the pattern persists in future races.
Then less so the drivers. It is a completely un-sorted car that they are looking to put the least amount of time and effort in to. FOM should park them for the year and STILL charge them for freight fees.
Kolles is the only thing remotely keeping the project together. Blame lies closer to the absentee owners on this one I feel.
Possibly, but I think it's too early to make a definitive judgement on the topic. One awkward issue is that wherever he goes, he'll probably need to take Rob with him - an option that may not be available to him without a certain amount of control over his own leaving date.
Another awkward issue is that he'll not find another team like Ferrari again.
He was always goingto struggle against Alonso. He had anadvantage against Raikkonen because the team builds understeering cars and Kimi can't deal with that. Alonso like Massa likes understeer so Massa will never have any kind of car advantage and he just isn't as fast. I would not be surprised if his accident is still affecting him. Something like that can have effects for 2 or 3 years and he will only realise that afterwards
Did anyone catch Hamilton's reaction in the press conference? Very telling stuff.
"Remotely" isn't enough. It's visibly unravelling in the span of a few days, or at least that's how it looks. The chocolate fireguard team owners definitely aren't helping though!
Oh maaaaaaannn I totally forgot about the stupid clock stealing an hour of my life tonight....
Also my phone battery is nearly flat, my charger is in the car and I'm already in my pjs. Not a good day to be me :D
True.
Hamilton, Schumacher and Rosberg got blocking warnings and the HRT drivers did not. Where is the sense in that?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90251
Run out in your pjs. No-one is going to care
You can't warn someone who isn't there to be warned!
I did a small bit of writing:
2011 Australian Grand Prix (Rd 1, Free Practice 3) http://wp.me/pSi0N-YA
Vettel destroys the field in Melbourne (*Updated): (2011 Australian Grand Prix; Rd 1, Qualifying) http://wp.me/pSi0N-Yz
Unfortunately, the HRT boys retired to the pub and couldn't hear the phone call from Charlie. Not sure they'll be too worried
I might just not get up for work tomorrow.... :)
They could at least acknowledge that their behaviour was not acceptable.
Student!
Also, the FIA has failed to mention the warnings that did happen in the relevant part of its site. Grrr!
They've already given them the second-heaviest penalty in their arsenal for other unacceptable behaviour and you can't issue a one-race ban for a first-time blocking offence.
Slander!
Typical
Just as well you are not studying law
Libel! Litigation!
Cobblers
Bullying!
That is libel
Cobblers? I haven't had supper yet!
If I was a student, I wouldn't have a problem would I.... I could stay in bed all Sunday because I wouldn't have a job.
And you just said you may not get up
I've never had a job on Sunday (though there was a time when I worked some Saturdays).
I used to work on Sundays & I had to record GPs. On the other hand, it was the 2002 season so I never actually missed anything.
Jake Humphrey's done a cartoon of the punditry team :)
I'm so confused :(
I've had a few races that I've missed through galas and have to watch later. One was Austria 2002 - I got back from a gala so late that I had to watch the video after school the next day. Getting the staff not to reveal the twist ending proved quite difficult...
Sorry, I'm mistaken. Jake tweeted it, I thought it was his work but it's actually @james_speed's
I love this Spanish Lewis and Jenson vid on Joe's site.
Christine. POINTS
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/a-message-for-spanish-fans/
It's OK you have confused everyone else too
That is brilliant!
:D
Mr Head I assume
Thought the same - he does seem like he could be a "Mr X" type person
;)
That was you!!!
See how confused you are
Just finally watching the pre-quali show. Just started the Paul di Resta section
I am up and dressed and ready to go 20 minutes early. That's a first.
Actually, I'm not wearing any shoes.
You probably need shoes. Unless you have some clever plan to get people to carry you
I definitely need shoes. I got back into bed though to do my commenting and shoes in bed is bad :)
Have you managed to blag any paddock tours today yet?
no, today is going to be very quiet.
Off to breakfast though, I hope Crofty is there. I can't believe he went yesterday!
Heikki's going to carry Amy around all day by the sound of it.
Next year you need to tweet him an invite to the sidepodbreakfast
:D
he'd probably run away in fear.
When we saw him I said "I've been looking for Crofty all day" and the ausgp lady said "my last tour wanted to see him too!"
she seemed confused, but then again if she expected us to not recognise drivers her bar must have been set quite low.
:D
Most people probably recognise helmets but not drivers, engineers, physios etc.
I thought Paul came across really well
We all love him now ♥
You said that this morning but I missed the program. What impressed you?
speaking of ads, I like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvovA9cjJFo
MIKA!
I also said recently that Seb Buemi needs to really cook it this year. So great job by the Swiss bloke to pull 10th - hopefully points will follow!!
Genius
Interesting. I think Lewis, Jenson and Heikki are better acters than Schumacher and Rosberg
Even though he admitted to nerves (to the commentators if not to us) he sounded very mature and calm. He expressed himself well and managed to speak his thoughts without making anyone feel drowsy. Also, he had humility, rationality and ambition combined in a very attractive way.
I wonder if that comes from all the time in the DTM or if it is natural. He comes across a lot like his 2nd or 3rd cousin Dario Franchitti
He was cheerful and good natured. Seemed like a really nice person. It was early in the morning, I don't really remember :D
It's interesting that there was such a positive reaction to him based on a few minutes of coverage. I was surprised but maybe that is because I have been telling everyone who will listen about him for years
I've known about him for quite a while, but was a little surprised it took him as long as it did to get to F1 - really thought he could've ended up trapped in DTM
pamela is here. Off we go!
Enjoy!
Have fun!
have fun amy and pamela
I said at the start of last year before the FIF1 deal was announced that I thought he was going to be another McNish and not get a chance in F1 despite so obviously deserving one
Have a great day
Main straight walk on race day!!
http://t.co/6MIm8pb
Love photos from the track
Awww hrt all packed up
They should be forced to sit in the corner and watch all the other children play.
I love this! Vodafone's Lewis-Jenson ads have really been something.
HRT might actually be happy if you send them to the back of the grid. :D
True. That would at least place them on the grid.
I'm sure Charlie will have a word in relevant ears during the Malaysian driver's briefing.
Happy birthday, Alia! :D
Thank you, Journeyer :)
Note that not a single word was said in the Schumi-Nico commercial. ;) But it's a very good concept, as you'd expect from the guys who put together the "Anything You Can Do" commercial. Still can't believe how accurately they called that.
:D
waiting on a man about a dog
I wonder how many drivers are thing that pulling over is a huge penalty to endure thanks mainly to the large off-line marbles?
eh?
The film or are you getting a puppy?
@ausgp are giving you a dog?
Off to bed. See you after the race!
Good night
See ya Alia! :)
see you ali
it's secret plan code :)
what on earth...?! :P
Amy has a secret plan apparently
Is this the same plan that was mentioned this morning that needs us all to do something?
Does it involve a "Death Star" or underground passages?
My Dad used to say that. In other words, I'm doing something and I won't give you any more details :)
Evening all
Hi Bassano.
Hello
hi bassano / kai
Am trying to work out how to set my alarm and make sure it kinda... goes off at the right time. wish i could remember what i did last year..
Am watching Let me In
It's better than I thought but it's not as atmospheric as the original
they should be forced to sit in the garage during the race stripping down and rebuilding their car
Hey Kai
Could've been worse. Could've been the atrocity that was The Wicker Man re-make
Or bringing tea for other teams
I'm not that masochistic as to watch that! :)
Hello Kai
With Carabante dressed as a waitress
I'm all out of sync with you guys this weekend 'cause I haven't been feeling great so i need my sleep and I can't watch the quali and race at 1:30 or 2am, so I am doing media black out until I can get up and watch my DVR. It feels weird not watching with you all.
:(
But that's why I read through all the comments after, and twitter, etc etc.
It's my choice not to stay up, so it's fine. :)
But a little lonely. :(
Listening to Beck to pass the time right now. Guero was a rather calming album.
the dog is ready. Or maybe it's the man. #allwillberevealed
I tell you what, why don't we meet up next weekend and make it up to you
#SocialSidepodcast
Did the Branson - The Other Guy I'll Dress as a stewardess> thing ever happen?
I find tweets like this weird, because I look at my clock and see that it's still only 11.30 on Saturday night.
Branson pulled out.
Amy is taking Heikki for a walk ;)
I'm excited to see how we can help.
(I've been trawlin'...)
Isn't it happening for Malaysia?
I can't remember what the excuse was, but it was along the lines of "I'm busy washing my hair"
hm. You know what? That sounds great. Come on over. Why don't we meet in......say..... Boston!
I don't think I could miss the first race of the season. I probably wouldn't be able to sleep.
I hope you get some sleep and feel better soon
That is so sad
Beard probably
Intriguing
Perfect :)
Didn't he hurt his leg doing some insane sport like he does?
You must be feeling better then
Hi as well. Still at dads, just had a text to say they are on way back but will be an hour.. I'd intended to go home at 12 and watch race at home..
Probably, but being Branson I'm surprised he didn't order a lackey to start feeling pain instead
intriguing
OH NO!! I forgot about the daily again!!!
*starts writing*
It was some kind of injury. He will do it though because he likes dressing up like a woman
delayed to later in the yearw
Well I've never been so excited and plugged in to the beginning of the season, so I have you all to thank for that, but I want to be healthy for my SPC friends. And work has been totally asinine lately, and that takes it out of me.
May I linkables?
sleep's definitely the right thing if off colour
Don't worry about it. Most comments will be on the race thread so if the daily is not done before lunch time it won't matter
I said that. But slowly because I'm on ipad
Yeah, I'm okay, I just had homework to do for Monday and I've been fighting one of the many strains of viri that the kids have been tossing around for 2 weeks.
You have to be healthy. That is always top priority
but am going to the zoo tomorrow.. may be a short daily though. am in need of sleep. apologies to all.
By the way Pat, Esteban Guerrieri nabbed pole for the Indy Lights race that we'll never see. First time in a Lights car I think
I suppose being a teacher you are succeptible to all those diseases
Yeah, but now I'm used to it. First years go down quick and stay down.
SOunds like a good day out.
Short daily is fine
DId you see this Lewis and Jenson vid?
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/a-message-for-spanish-fans/
as well he should as a WSR man against that field, or has it got stronger when I wasnt looking. We'll see it if we torrent it later in the week what with it having tv deal now... Got so much stuff in the queue it'll have to wait though!
its for a photography project so yeah much fun :)
ohh no! thank you!
Good
Not in the slightest
Inside Grand Prix is on Motors, haven't seen that in years, it's still terrible :)
Oh dear
Irt's never as terrible as the one for your home G.P.... Apparently my pet is a moose, I live in an igloo and I ride a kayak to work.
So Mr Coulthard is 40 on Sunday - happy birthday my good man!!
you're also a lumberjack?
does anyone have any links they would like included in the daily? or anything at all really?
SidepodBoston?
Good call
Have you got Heikki and Amy?
http://twitpic.com/4dfbn7
of course.
If it's OK:
Something for the Weekend - http://easymusicfordifficultears.blogspot.com/2011/03/something-for-weekend-die-doraus-und.html
Aussie GP Qualifying - http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/2011-australian-grand-prix-rd-1-qualifying/
Muchos gracious Lou
:)
ohh, can you remind me of the details please?
no problem! thanks for helping me out! :)
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodBoston
Next Fri, April 1st - Sun 3rd
Since the gp is aaaaaages away, we have gone our for a late breaky. The straight walk was fun.
Hehehe April fool!
This should take care of it.
This Thursday. Janna and Bassano will meet me and Scott in Boston.
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodBoston
So anyway, who won the boat race and was it fun?
as opposed to the funny walk
Oxford won, it was very good fun. Learnt lots thanks to resident expert Rachel as the thread comments display
hah, that would be a he'll of a prank
Did John Cleese come up with that one?
good stuff
:)
bah
our breakfast has not happened because the dog and man suck. Still waiting.
it was alright but not as fun as some years, bit one sided
oh, the joys of touchscreen typing. :( I don't like it much myself.
more the autocorrect
that too. I have to type things over and over on my iPod. Boo. Waste of time.
The more you use it, the better it gets
That hasn't happened for me yet. I don't use it enough to get better, so I never get better. Yeah.
Are we in for another season of Rwd Bull skating near the rules?
Was reading earlier about the front wing flex and special KERS
...or bitter designers thinking "wish I'd thought of that!"
are you referring to ant and crofty? :-/
What is that about slow charge KERS that is saved for the end of the race.
Can't be, Ant is in the UK
Well, if true, the start only KERS is clever but I don't agree with the wing flex. Just makes the parc ferme testing appear inadequate
The talk is that it's a light weight unit that is only used at the start
I . Am . Not . a . Fan
If the "special KERS" is a unit that provides the full KERS boost during the start (at the appropriate speed) but that has no recharging capabilities, I see no issue. Though, that system woudl not account for the .5 second delta.
It's seems no one in power is listen to my suggestion of large rumble strips in parts of the run off areas
That's the bit that might be against the rules
If there's no advantage then nothing has changed in the rules. What's he deal with Turn 3? Is that where everyone's been going off?
Agreed.
We'll see what happens, I guess
they've been going off at 3 but probably 6 even more.
I wish they would listen. Anyone leaving the track should suffer a big enough penalty to discourage them doing it as often as they do. There is one part of the track where every car completely crosses the line because the run off is asphalt
It's the corner where every one is going off. This idea of "not gaining an advantage" should be ditched. If you go off it should cost you time. Put slalom's in like they do at Monza, but at turn 3/4, it's too easy
Awww...
At least at T6, there's the gravel to slow them down/ catch them.
I wonder how easy/hard it is to install those. This is normally public road, isn't it?
More difficult that installing barriers?
Park roads seem to be out if action for a couple of weeks
But these would be on the road itself, so may need to be removed quicker.
finally off to the track! Thank you dog and man for being 90 minutes late ;)
...EH? :P
Have a great time!
dog and man?
Apparently, we'll find out later
Code for Amy's top-secret plan for today.
Suspense. Killing me.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/See_a_man_about_a_dog
christine's song made it into the newsletter for melbourne track officials, thanks to @elephino_
http://twitpic.com/4do79v
♥
:O
wow!!
Ace!!
oooh! WOW!
Fantastic!
Probably their effort to woo us after the mess with Amy on Friday. :D Just kidding! Awesome stuff!
this plan requires major help from sidepodcast but i learned on Thursday that i can rely on you all :)
cool, but we're going to sleep in about 5 minutes, you need us to blog anything?
All for F1 and F1 for all.
yes but not yet. The pieces need to be in place first.
Sleep? I've heard if that
intriguing.
f1 has ruined me :)
I woke up after 4 today
No sleep till after the race unless I attempt a reset by staying up
Verdict on Let Me In: if you can't face the subtitled Swedish original then this is a lot more accessible. Still a bit strange but worth a watch. Chloe Metz is fabulous as always [Kick Ass]
comment time check...
bugger that's not right.
Yup, not right at all. :D
odd, server time has moved forward.
Bassano, is Scott meeting you at the airport, seeing as my train doesn't get in until after you arrive?
Interesting way of looking at it I suppose
http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/12018/
Stupid BST.
He's offered but I think we'll probably just get a cab
Why don't you meet with him near or in the hotel if you want to kill time?
Is the time set to adjust automagically?
Does it think you are in the US?
This song and recording always amazes me. It's the "Indian War Whoop" by Hoyt Ming and the Pep Steppers from 1928 (the video is recent obviously), but still the quality for the 1920's is stunning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wz7K-Kry8k
Sure. We can all meet in The Lenox lobby.
epic :)
I am now home
I'm convinced dog means something in this case but I can't work out what.
yay. Home is good. Home for a GP is pretty much mandatory, unless you're at the race.
David, please make up your mind...
I'm guessing this means they've settled their differences, and they've realized they can't beat Dany if they fight amongst themselves.
Well I was offered a bed at Dad's (which until Friday was sat in pieces in various places in this flat) but they'll be up at 7.30 faffing about taking my sister to some street dance thing, despite mega big HD screen I can't be dealing with that hassle 30 mins into a GP, so home it is. :)
Officially had enough of David now.
Agreed
I love quiet and no distractions on my own time. Distractions are a way of life for me at work, so I need time away to recharge.
seconded. what a hunt.
It's a fair point, Liuzzi found 4 seconds in as many laps, he just did it way way too late.
:)
Am trying out a new browser for the iPhone
Atomic. Liking the full-screen mode and not SidepodIssues noticed so far
:D
HRT?
@GaryDelaney:
I've just put my clock forward and now it's fallen off the mantelpiece
Also I'm not sure I'd be comfortable having the netbook and iPad out while watching the race, if people are hovering around making a nuisance.
Certainly a dog but in this case I think it's a euphemism
I had enough of him after he failed as an F3 driver. He had Acorn computer sponsrship so maybe a slight #mfc cpnnection
I get that, totally. We all have our Sacred F1 Space while watching. :)
Haven't decided on commentary choice for the race. DC & MB were good and Ant won't be in the box
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-27th-march-2011
and now.. i sleep.. see you in 4 hours... *sigh* stuuppidd clocks!
xx
Standard BBC1 for me, unless they get too simplistic or annoying. So far so good.
G'night Lou
night lou
Na night Lou
I have heard enough of the BBC now to know just how badly the Speed guys suck. I can barely stand them now (except for Steve Matchett), when before I used to enjoy them just fine. I know now what I'm missing.
Night Lou... and I'm off for a 3hr 40min sleep too. Hopefully it won't turn into a 7hr one..
Night Pat
G'night Pat
DRS needs to be available everywhere, limiting it makes it usesless
