We've been counting it down for far too long, and now the season has begun. We're into the best part of the weekend now, practice sessions almost done, qualifying and the race still to come. There is no need for a countdown anymore, and that being the case, it's worth checking out what the biggest counter of the off-season has to say.

Let's go!! Start your engines and welcome the 2011 season! Oh yeah!!

tabathavalls's Twitter avatartabathavalls

That'll do it.

So, what is underway today? We have Free Practice 3 and Qualifying coming up very shortly. Both will have live threads here on Sidepodcast, and will be covered by the Factbyte Factbox as well.

Later on in the day, it's time for the 2011 Boat Race, the annual battle along the River Thames between the Oxford and Cambridge rowing crews. Assuming I can wake up in time, (the coverage begins at 3:45pm on the BBC), then I'm hoping to Factbyte Factbox that as well. Busy weekend!

Back to F1, and if you're looking for more ways to follow the sport that you love, Mr C has rounded up some of the new initiatives from teams for the 2011 season. With redesigned websites and live telemetry, it's hard to keep up. I do particularly like the Lotus videos though, it's great to go behind the scenes like that.

I'm considering handing out points to Lotus for those videos when Christine's Rankings returns next Tuesday. Although it's still a few days away, now seems like a good time to remind you all that I'm counting on you to point out things I may have missed. There are so many tweets, photos, videos and news articles floating around now that the season is underway, it's impossible to keep up. If you want your favourite team or driver to be counted, let me know what you've spotted!

Now, I think it's time for a nap. Our sleep schedules are all kinds of messed up but that doesn't even matter. Today we'll find out who's on pole for the first GP of the year, and that is worth sacrificing sleep for.

am staying up and maybe napping between sessions.

am staying up and maybe napping between sessions.

It's a small gap, only an hour and a half

Half an hour if you want to see the run up to qualy

Wish I could nap and guarantee I'd wake again. Think I'll just sleep sometime tomorrow afternoon and be fresh for the race then :)

I'm not sure what I'm doing. I want an early night so I wake at 5 although I don't feel the need to sleep.. but I don't want to start anything in case I stay up too long!

am reading this paywalled autosport column, but if what button says is true, i am gong to be loving these tyres: http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3382

...such is the high degradation rate, a driver stopping earlier than a rival will comfortably pass him as fresh tyres will be worth 3-4s per lap. However, the earlier you stop, the longer a final stint you are consigning yourself to. Should you run out of rubber in that final stint, you're a sitting duck. "In the closing stages I think there is going to be a huge amount of overtaking," says Button.

We ought to see some teams opt to take the hit in the middle part of the race and change to new tyres with 10-12 laps left... sadly some teams are still locked in the mentality of protecting themselves against the opposition so they'll probably all eat the tyres before then.

It came out of the Lotus press release, so I have to believe the story, but yes, there should be a kill switch. The trouble is that the compulsory kill switch for it alos kills other stuff, including the engine.

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 08:50

He's on the R5L, not the TV commentary though.

Yeah probably. So in the first race the main safety feature of the system has been proven to be bogus.

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 08:59

A thought, if it was stuck open, wouldn't he have done a Sutil?

It would if it had happened at a point where the downforce was needed and/or Heikki hadn't realised what was going on before the downforce was required. While those two possibilities cover a lot of the lap, they need not have covered all of it, especially if the Lotus has a notification system for such failures and/or a wing position light.

He would have realised and adjusted accorfingly.

thats why I like it, he's got a nice smile and I don't look completely awful as so often happens on that angle.

The FIA have announced the 2 HRT cars will not be allowed to take part in the race tomorrow.

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:04

It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? :P :D

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 10:04

Was one of their photographers stalking you stalking Heikki?

every driver that came along the fence had about 40 photographers with them, I knew I'd be in some photos somewhere!

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 10:05

It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? :P :D

This one that I tweeted http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/d11aus1223.jpg shows just how crazy it gets. You can see my flag but you can't see me because I was buried! Buried by arms and programmes!

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:05

The FIA have announced the 2 HRT cars will not be allowed to take part in the race tomorrow.

Unless they get special dispensation for 1 more day of testing, they're doomed. We'll probably just have 22 cars on the grid by season's end.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 10:06

The FIA have announced the 2 HRT cars will not be allowed to take part in the race tomorrow.

That makes sense, disappointing as that will be for Tonio and Narain.

Meanwhile, could the FIA please update their site? It still doesn't have yesterday's pit lane speeding penalties in the correct section!

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 10:07

Unless they get special dispensation for 1 more day of testing, they're doomed. We'll probably just have 22 cars on the grid by season's end.

They've still got their six days of straightline testing they can use in-season. And the day of standard testing per driver change...

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:07

Meanwhile, could the FIA please update their site? It still doesn't have yesterday's pit lane speeding penalties in the correct section!

:D Awww! You'll have to pester them - I'm not sure anyone else has noticed, TBH. :)

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 10:08

:D Awww! You'll have to pester them - I'm not sure anyone else has noticed, TBH. :)

How? They're not on Twitter and I don't know who in the organisation to email...

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:08

They've still got their six days of straightline testing they can use in-season. And the day of standard testing per driver change...

Per driver change? So if they switch from Narain to Klien and back to Narain, they get 2 days?

If not, that's 8 extra days, tops. I wonder if that's enough. Then again, it's not so much lack of testing that is the issue. Rather, it's the lack of funds. Or lack of everything. Depends on how you see it.

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:10

How? They're not on Twitter and I don't know who in the organisation to email...

You'd know that better than me, quite honestly. Try a search engine.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 10:11

Per driver change? So if they switch from Narain to Klien and back to Narain, they get 2 days?

1 extra day per new driver. So Narain -> Klien -> Narain would be 1 day, but Narain -> Klien -> A N Other -> Narain (which is permitted because a team may have 4 drivers per season) would be 2 days.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 10:12

You'd know that better than me, quite honestly. Try a search engine.

That only gives me the email for technical problems with the site. Lack of updates is not a technical problem but a people problem.

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:13

Yup, so 8 days max. Narain isn't much good, so they can switch him round while keeping Tonio in. Problem is, going testing also incurs costs. Is it something they can afford?

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:14

it was so awful sitting at T1 today and just watching the HRT get in every single persons way :(

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 10:15

it was so awful sitting at T1 today and just watching the HRT get in every single persons way :(

Hmmm. I wonder if they can get special dispensation to just run their 2010 car. At least that's reliable...

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 10:17

ooh ooh ooh also it pains me to admit it but the two tone mclaren hats look nicer in person.

there are photographers in heaps of my photos, there were so many there.

I only chatted to one, he was an American dude but he was working for a Finnish company so the main request from his employers was lots of pictures of Heikki. Sounds like a good job to me!

  • Eric the baker26/03/2011 at 11:35

Don't kidnap Jenson. If you do, we'll just have to hear snarky comments from Bernie saying stuff like "If Jenson drove faster he wouldn't have been kidnapped"

    Exactly!!

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 11:38

when Bruno was signing today one of the guys next to me told him he had a nice watch. Bruno said thanks, then he said 'can I have it? Just tell them you lost it' and Bruno said 'so I'll go inside, and I'll come back with lots of passes and watches? OK'

  • Lukeh26/03/2011 at 11:41

My first game of Top Spin 4 and Andy Murray has beaten me. It's OK though, I felt bad for him losing in the first round at several tournaments so I let him beat me see, and now he'll do better with that new found confidence :)

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 11:42

    Ooh that's good to hear.

he signed for everyone and was smiley and grinning the whole time, very chatty with anyone who talked to him too.

  • Christine26/03/2011 at 13:40

Both of us here couldn't get past Java....

Ours died about halfway through qualifying and never came back.

  • Lady Snowcat26/03/2011 at 13:44

    That's a relief... at least it's a general issue...

    Impressed with the HD....

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 14:29

Well, the FIA partly listened to me. They've posted the FIA communications... ...but not for the day I requested!

Did anyone else have problems getting Live timing...

Yes. It wouldn't accept my login details!

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 14:30

He was most excellent today. I'd say the only driver who was friendlier was Vettel. Considering he's the world champion and has a lot of demands on his time he is amazing

    Bravo Sebastien and Bruno :)

  • Journeyer26/03/2011 at 14:31

I'm guessing they may not upload it at all. :D

It's earth hour and we have floodlit racing in both Abu dhabi (GT1) and Dubai (GT Horse)

And we've got mass live-commenting of the boat race. Earth Hour could have been better timed...

  • Lukeh26/03/2011 at 17:50

I return to the daily from the boat race with bits of Dr Who news. Apparently there was a bit of an easter egg with the small preview trailer airing on BBC2 including an alien that the BBC1 trailer didn't have, wierdly enough.

Also Steven Moffat has made a quick prequel to the first episode of the new series!! Eeeek!!

  • Pat W26/03/2011 at 17:57

Ok I'm off to Dad's to do a bit of 'babysitting', will bring ipad and netbook in case I stay over instead of coming back at midnight. May comment from there tonight.

  • Bert26/03/2011 at 19:54

So, the F1 has gone HD. FOM and/or the Beeb is still formatting the on screen graphics in "4:3 safe" positions. Fail?

    M.B. + D.C. Win?

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 19:55

    M.B. + D.C. Win?

Decent enough job on day 1. You could clearly hear Brundle getting more confident as the session went on, but realistically it far, far, far to early to give a definitive "yes" or "no".

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 20:00

    Buhhh!!

IndyCar's timing and scoring page as well as the radio feed has been dieing all weekend, but I suppose this is an improvement on live streaming of the event....

So, the F1 has gone HD. FOM and/or the Beeb is still formatting the on screen graphics in "4:3 safe" positions. Fail?

Yeh, the graphics during quali were annoying with the "tower" of times kept blocking the action, hopefully during the races it will be OK...

... also, I am glad they are still like that as I am still relying on 4:3 terrestrial tv on one of my TVs ....

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 20:44

  • Bert26/03/2011 at 20:48

Fortunate for me - I still have a 4:3 television...

Then I propose that broadcasters run 2 feeds, one SD - 4:3 safe and one HD - non 4:3 safe. Otherwise, letterboxing for the 4:3 feed. This comes from a 4:3 only watcher (still waiting for the right one!)

Good news that the FIA did not allow the HRT request for exemption from the 107% rule?

  • Lukeh26/03/2011 at 20:51

Been watching a brilliant History of Variety Acts show on BBC2 this evening, recommended watch. Morcambe and Wise never, ever, ever get old.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:00

Good news that the FIA did not allow the HRT request for exemption from the 107% rule?

I think so. If it had just missed, I'd have expected an exemption for reasons of keeping the grid full, but at that speed Karthikeyan wouldn't even have been classified and Liuzzi would have only been in the classification by half-a-second per lap. Since the hard tyres have to be used for both wear and regulatory reasons and cost a whole second new, and the soft tyres will in any case wear out, it is highly unlikely that Tonio could have been classified in the results either.

The stewards are administrating a race, not a test. They cannot be expected to let Hispania in just because they need test miles.

I think a better solution would be for Hispania to petition the FIA to let them miss the next 3 races and perhaps persuade them to allow a couple of days of full-track testing in exchange for effectively missing 6 days of running. This would allow them to be better-prepared for when they rejoin the action in Spain and should at least let them join the back of the pack.

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:01

Wouldn't that exclude them from the championship?

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:03

I think for once Kolles is fighting a battle he cannot win. It's one thing to keep Jordan and other squads just afloat before they get sold on, but if the HRT cannot even qualify, then it will be much harder to keep them up.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:05

Wouldn't that exclude them from the championship?

No, because the current version of Concorde allows all teams to miss three races a season subject to FIA approval. If done without approval, they face FIA penalties but only face automatic exclusion if the number of missed races rises to four.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:06

The controversial bit would be extracting the test days in exchange. However, I think they could argue it would be to the benefit of the sport as a whole if they were permitted to do that deal, especially if it was used as a test of the idea of bringing back limited in-season testing (a popular idea in certain quarters that nobody quite dares discuss - if the team with the lowest budget can benefit from a modest regime, then future seasons could see all the teams allowed a little more testing).

McNish should be a fantastic interview! I always love his enthusiasm and obvious passion for what he does. Plus he knows how to stuff a car and then bring it to victory, perhaps the best drive I have personally witnessed.

    You were at that race?

We live commented it here. Great recovery drive. His move on Klien towards the end of the race must be one of the most determined passes I have ever seen. I don't think it would have mattered how fast Klien's car was or what he did with it McNish was going past him.

I think it's in Truth in 24 where we seem him do a commentary about an on-board lap of La Sarthe, but seen from the outside, behind the camera. His passion is just fantastic. (or his showman skills, and if so, he deserves an Oscar!)

@MarkGallagher62: Spoke to Tonio Liuzzi & Narain last night; both v disappointed not to qualify but told of their huge effort to try & qualify #AustralianGP

That's completely understandable. Simply because a challenge is impossible doesn't mean failing at it doesn't hurt.

In this case the drivers are far from the guilty part. Again HRT fails to do the appropriate pre-season work and tries to do the minimum to get in. Collin, This Space is not Cool.

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:34

Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:35

Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.

I don't think the 0.6 seconds will have him half as anxious as the fact he nearly didn't make Q2.

  • Bert26/03/2011 at 21:35

Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.

    Then Webber?!

  • jpancoast26/03/2011 at 21:36

As much as I like him, Massa's been rubbish this weekend. Needs to find his groove quickly.

I'm wondering if a team change might do him good.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:36

    Hardly Kolles' fault.

In what sense? There doesn't seem to be any sense of organisation or purpose at the team and that's what the team leader is meant to provide (at least if, like Colin, he's focused on the systems side).

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:36

    Then Webber?!

"Ouch" is all I can think of

  • Steven Roy26/03/2011 at 21:36

I get the same feeling from listening to JYS and Moss. There are not many out there that do it that well.

McNish went through the JYS charm school

  • James26/03/2011 at 21:36

Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.

If it continues in the next couple races, then Massa's head will drop further...

Wait and see though, Massa has never had a good Australian GP

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:37

    Then Webber?!

Webber tends to panic less than Massa - I think Mark will only get worried if the pattern persists in future races.

  • Bert26/03/2011 at 21:37

    Hardly Kolles' fault.

Then less so the drivers. It is a completely un-sorted car that they are looking to put the least amount of time and effort in to. FOM should park them for the year and STILL charge them for freight fees.

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:37

In what sense? There doesn't seem to be any sense of organisation or purpose at the team and that's what the team leader is meant to provide (at least if, like Colin, he's focused on the systems side).

Kolles is the only thing remotely keeping the project together. Blame lies closer to the absentee owners on this one I feel.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:38

I'm wondering if a team change might do him good.

Possibly, but I think it's too early to make a definitive judgement on the topic. One awkward issue is that wherever he goes, he'll probably need to take Rob with him - an option that may not be available to him without a certain amount of control over his own leaving date.

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:39

One awkward issue is that wherever he goes, he'll probably need to take Rob with him

Another awkward issue is that he'll not find another team like Ferrari again.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2011 at 21:39

Thoughts folks? A gap of 0.6 between Alonso and Massa - wondering if Felipe is feeling a bit anxious right now about the season.

He was always goingto struggle against Alonso. He had anadvantage against Raikkonen because the team builds understeering cars and Kimi can't deal with that. Alonso like Massa likes understeer so Massa will never have any kind of car advantage and he just isn't as fast. I would not be surprised if his accident is still affecting him. Something like that can have effects for 2 or 3 years and he will only realise that afterwards

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 21:40

Did anyone catch Hamilton's reaction in the press conference? Very telling stuff.

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:41

Kolles is the only thing remotely keeping the project together. Blame lies closer to the absentee owners on this one I feel.

"Remotely" isn't enough. It's visibly unravelling in the span of a few days, or at least that's how it looks. The chocolate fireguard team owners definitely aren't helping though!

  • Alison26/03/2011 at 21:41

    I'm so confused :(

I used to work on Sundays & I had to record GPs. On the other hand, it was the 2002 season so I never actually missed anything.

I've had a few races that I've missed through galas and have to watch later. One was Austria 2002 - I got back from a gala so late that I had to watch the video after school the next day. Getting the staff not to reveal the twist ending proved quite difficult...

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2011 at 21:59

Jake Humphrey's done a cartoon of the punditry team :)

Sorry, I'm mistaken. Jake tweeted it, I thought it was his work but it's actually @james_speed's

  • Amy26/03/2011 at 22:14

Have you managed to blag any paddock tours today yet?

no, today is going to be very quiet.

Off to breakfast though, I hope Crofty is there. I can't believe he went yesterday!

Heikki's going to carry Amy around all day by the sound of it.

he'd probably run away in fear.

When we saw him I said "I've been looking for Crofty all day" and the ausgp lady said "my last tour wanted to see him too!"

she seemed confused, but then again if she expected us to not recognise drivers her bar must have been set quite low.

Even though he admitted to nerves (to the commentators if not to us) he sounded very mature and calm. He expressed himself well and managed to speak his thoughts without making anyone feel drowsy. Also, he had humility, rationality and ambition combined in a very attractive way.

I wonder if that comes from all the time in the DTM or if it is natural. He comes across a lot like his 2nd or 3rd cousin Dario Franchitti

  • Alison26/03/2011 at 22:30

He was cheerful and good natured. Seemed like a really nice person. It was early in the morning, I don't really remember :D

It's interesting that there was such a positive reaction to him based on a few minutes of coverage. I was surprised but maybe that is because I have been telling everyone who will listen about him for years

  • Leigh O'Gorman26/03/2011 at 22:37

I was surprised but maybe that is because I have been telling everyone who will listen about him for years

I've known about him for quite a while, but was a little surprised it took him as long as it did to get to F1 - really thought he could've ended up trapped in DTM

I said at the start of last year before the FIF1 deal was announced that I thought he was going to be another McNish and not get a chance in F1 despite so obviously deserving one

Note that not a single word was said in the Schumi-Nico commercial. ;) But it's a very good concept, as you'd expect from the guys who put together the "Anything You Can Do" commercial. Still can't believe how accurately they called that.

are you referring to ant and crofty? :-/

  • Kai27/03/2011 at 00:25

What is that about slow charge KERS that is saved for the end of the race.

  • Lukeh27/03/2011 at 00:25

are you referring to ant and crofty? :-/

Can't be, Ant is in the UK

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 00:26

...or bitter designers thinking "wish I'd thought of that!"

Well, if true, the start only KERS is clever but I don't agree with the wing flex. Just makes the parc ferme testing appear inadequate

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 00:26

What is that about slow charge KERS that is saved for the end of the race.

The talk is that it's a light weight unit that is only used at the start

    I . Am . Not . a . Fan

@adamcooperf1: #F1 FIA has decreed any driver going off at Turn 3 can now rejoin AFTER the apex of Turn 4 if it's safe and no advantage is gained

  • Bert27/03/2011 at 00:27

Was reading earlier about the front wing flex and special KERS

If the "special KERS" is a unit that provides the full KERS boost during the start (at the appropriate speed) but that has no recharging capabilities, I see no issue. Though, that system woudl not account for the .5 second delta.

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 00:28

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 00:28

but that has no recharging capabilities

That's the bit that might be against the rules

they've been going off at 3 but probably 6 even more.

  • Steven Roy27/03/2011 at 00:31

It's seems no one in power is listen to my suggestion of large rumble strips in parts of the run off areas

I wish they would listen. Anyone leaving the track should suffer a big enough penalty to discourage them doing it as often as they do. There is one part of the track where every car completely crosses the line because the run off is asphalt

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 00:31

If there's no advantage then nothing has changed in the rules. What's he deal with Turn 3? Is that where everyone's been going off?

It's the corner where every one is going off. This idea of "not gaining an advantage" should be ditched. If you go off it should cost you time. Put slalom's in like they do at Monza, but at turn 3/4, it's too easy

@karunchandhok: Sorry been offline - twitter app on my phone being moody ! Obviously rubbish start to life in a Team Lotus car for me on Friday...

    Awww...

  • Leigh O'Gorman27/03/2011 at 00:32

At least at T6, there's the gravel to slow them down/ catch them.

  • Bassano27/03/2011 at 00:33

  • Journeyer27/03/2011 at 00:34

But these would be on the road itself, so may need to be removed quicker.

This song and recording always amazes me. It's the "Indian War Whoop" by Hoyt Ming and the Pep Steppers from 1928 (the video is recent obviously), but still the quality for the 1920's is stunning.
