It's the weekend! It's been a long old week (aren't they all?) and I don't know about you but I am looking forward to some downtime. Whilst there is no racing for a couple of weeks, I'm pretty sure there'll be enough F1 nonsense to keep us going. Meanwhile, the blogs have been particularly active.

  • Not content with setting up one new blog, Nick has only gone and added another to his lineup. With the politics side of things a particularly serious topic, Nick's turned his attention to all things satirical with: Not the F1 News.
  • When Shell invited us to join them for Friday Free Practice at Silverstone, we were glad to find we weren't the only bloggers/podcasters in attendance. We had a good chat with F1 Punter, who in turn made the most of his day and has now done a sterling job of writing up his fuel findings.
  • In last week's show we mentioned that we bumped into Fraggle in the SRC building, but according to her Flickr photos, we were the least interesting people she met. There's Jackie Stewart and Heikki Kovalainen (sorry Amy!) plus many more. Take a look.

As ever, let us know what you're up to this weekend, if it's anything exciting, and equally if it is not. I will see you in the comments.

I'm up to visiting Grandma a lot, catching up on food shopping and trying to get my blog back up to date (I owe four entries by now, according to my internal blogging schedule)...

    It's Saturday already?

I have to by a Christening present and then prepare for a day spent with about 100 Italians

[Believe me, that needs prep, ask Gavin]

Ooh, great for Mac users [and possibly SPC] on the move:

Pogoplug is a network drive adapter coupled with a web service that allows you to access a personal drive from anywhere on the Internet without having to worry about firewalls and other security issues

    That would be easy

One year I'm gonna get my Christmas shopping done before November, just pick 'em up as I see 'em

Hallo! After I unexpectedly became FOFA Chairman I really had no time to pop in. Quite surreal: I wrote a letter to FOTA and they responded, nice.

Then tried to post a comment on Ed Gorman's blog and it wasn't approved, did Ed get scared? Now I'm planning to turn up at Monaco next year doing some propaganda for FOFA. It was great to see big crowds at Silverstone. Cheers.

    Hey Mr Chairman,

I hope you are putting pressure on FOTA to deliver on the promises they were making to the fans over the Silverstone weekend about cheaper ticket prices etc.

Absolutely, I'm thinking of petition online to demand lower ticket prices, it's just that my current troops are not sure how it can be done. There's no know-how so maybe you guys could drop a suggestion?

  • Bassano Clapper26/06/2009 at 23:47

. There's no know-how so maybe you guys could drop a suggestion?

FOTA needs an official Twitter account, then they really exist and we can hassle them... give them our feedback, I mean

i would suggest a badge/banner for people to put on their websites? or failing that, dare i say some kind or twitter avatar (but they get annoying quickly).

I'll check it out, thank you. I had to change my internet connection because now I have to spend much more time doing stuff I normally wouldn't do. Got huge internet bill from vodafone this month, at least I know my money went into improving Heikki's car.

Yeah, how do it do it??? Educate me, I'm not THAT advanced. FOFA has twitter account but I'm not using it 100%.

I have pretty much abandoned TV coverage. I watch it with you guys and live timing coupled with the Justin tv feeds. Altogether better. I have found it difficult to comment during the race lately. Might have something to do with a certain Queanbeyan lad doing a little better this year.

We can all do that ;)

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:22

A lot of my colleagues rave about Dubai

    What's it all about?

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:22

We can all do that ;)

    Lol, i grew up there...

will do a wiki page one day... maybe soonish

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:22

Flashy hotels don't do it for me

I usually go deep, deep when on tour

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:23

    What's it all about?

It used to be nice... started getting bad about 2002

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:24

Oman & Bahrain seem to be gaining popularity lately though

[Euro/American money moved in big time?]

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:26

    What's it all about?

Its pretty good, you can make fun of the shallow people who think they have made it, The bars are pretty good if you do that.

Ski slope is great. Old parts of the city are great if you know whats going on, and the waterparks are good too. It probably has the best restaurnts in the world.

All you can eat and drink buffets for 15 quid (with alcohol)

I mostly just go now to see my friends and stop over on route elsewhere

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:27

Oman & Bahrain seem to be gaining popularity lately though

Bahrain is just Dubai without the buzz... i dont really like it.

Oman is much more chilled, really friendly people

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:28

Soounds like SE Asia except for the waterparks & skiing :)

[My fave corner of the world]

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:28

[Euro/American money moved in big time?]

The money is local. Euro/American Yuppies moved in to chase it, the city grew too fast, the traffic is really bad now. will hopefully get better soon.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:29

.. traffic is really bad now. will hopefully get better soon.

As a rule, traffic doesn't get better :D

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:30

Its not realy like anywhere... you have to see it yourself.

Its looks quite American, very modern, but with lots of South Asians and Europeans about

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:30

The recession has hit pretty hard at the moment, but yeah its worth seeing, add a few days as a stopover on the way to somewhere and see if you want to go deeper. the city has many sides.

I am debating between south america or cornwall this summer.

Cornwall is winning at the moment as it is summer.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:35

Cornwall is winning at the moment as it is summer.

Research the [whole] costs well, S. America won't be far behind

I never travel during English summers

  • Nick27/06/2009 at 01:37

Research the [whole] costs well, S. America won't be far behind

The costs even out, Cornwall will be for longer. might even work down there for a bit.

I feel like learning to surf.

I feel like learning to surf.

    Surf in Brasil, Argentina, etc

    Morning, everyone.

Has this comment from JA been discussed already?

Firstly I don’t detect that FOTA is too concerned with today’s developments; they are pressing ahead with shaping the 2010 rules and know that Mosley is leaving office in October. The agreement achieved on Wednesday has been voted through by the world council in any case. They see this as MM trying to create artificial tension, while arguing that the FIA needs a ’strong’ president who is experienced in F1 – ie Jean Todt. I get the impression that not even Ferrari want him to be the president. But as Mosley points out, FOTA has no say in that vote.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:52

    Hello matey

I think you just kicked the tumbleweeds away

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 01:53

JA was mentioned earlier as I arrived, think it was more to do with his press conf. role though

Personally, he's starting to annoy me again

Yeah, think his personality is seeping through with familiarity

  • Journeyer27/06/2009 at 01:59

Sure, will do. But haven't the others watched it already? It's been on theatres there since last week.

I guess so, but I don't notice it too much.

    sidepodspace update

The launch which was scrubbed will now be at 6:14pm EDT / 11:14 UK Saturday. Launch window is one hour. NASA predicting a 40% chance of good weather. You have to wonder how anyone can make a decision to re-schedule when there is only a 40% chance of acceptable weather.

Usually that's when the thunderstorms are tapering off. I think the entire state was stormy today. We had a waterspout just off our island

It looks like everyone associated with the Jackson family is protecting themselves. THe family lawyer has made a statement that he was always on prescription painkillers and had warned against it.

The doctor who was with him at the time has had his car impounded.

I, and Giggles [though he doesn't know it yet] and possibly F1 Wolf are planning an SE Asia [currently Manilla or similar] 2010 meet-up with Journeyer

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 03:10

Is this a non-shuttle launch or is that the back-up, back-up plan?

It is a weather satellite. Nothing very exciting. We have two weeks until the next shuttle launch. There was an item posted by Andy on yesterday's daily thread about a problem with the last shuttle that flew that may be grounded forever for the dumbest reason imaginable.

I've been catching up on my google news alerts but this is interesting.

I know this is an GMM story, but this makes sense. Apparently the guy who is behind the USF1 effort is Chad Hurley, one of the co-founders of YouTube, which means my chances of getting a job with USF1 are officially down the tubes.... not that I had a chance anyways.

The biggest horror though... guess who is tipped to take over for Peter Windsor as post race interviewer... that's right... Mr. James Allen... nooooooooooooooooooooo.

Peter Windsor used to do the interviews in the ost race press conference but he is now the team principal of USF1. James Allen was the ITV commentator until BBC took over F1 coverage

Awwwllll that right, no more Peter Windsor awkward grid walks. The moment he had with Nelson Piquet Sr. this year talking about how awful his son and Piquet the elders just caving in and saying "well... yeah....." was off the unintentional comedy scale.

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 03:23

Ohhhh the grey haired scruffy man??

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 03:23

To be fair, yeah and he has looked better in the light of the new BBC announcer.

I don't think so. I would rather have Legard. I can tune him out which I never managed with JA.

Oh, and good evening to anyone out there.

In my old house I had a hook by the door, in this house I don't. I really need to get one. Otherwise they are in one of three places - handbag, on the table, in the pocket of what I was wearing the day before. I solved the crisis, yesterday when I got home I had a shopping bag as well as my handbag. They were in there. Attempt #2 to leave the house is go.

There are a few 24 hour races. Le Mans, Bol d'or, Suzuka etc

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 12:00

Katharine Legge is slowest. I think she needs a Legge up.

She confuses me, she does ok in some races and 'better' in others, but she's never been great. I don't understand why she's in DTM other than that she does a cool blog on crash.net

  • Stuart C27/06/2009 at 12:01

Yep, a 24 hour bike race at le mans

The Bol D'Or was 24 hours too, but it finished when BCE bought Paul Ricard.

Normally not. They only play on the middle Sunday if they have lost a lot of matches to weather.

The organisers apply a bit more sense in their decisions too. There was a race a few years ago where Rossi was sponsored by a local chicken farm. His celebration when he won involved runner chickens and a man in a chicken suit who got on the back with Rossi back to the pits. The stewards call Rossi in to let him know he had broken the rules as they are not allowed to pick up passengers. Rossi told them that there was nothing in the rules to say he couldn't pick up giant chickens so they let him off.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 12:58

I promise to try harder in future.

And if it was an FIA-type event, they'd have picked up on the fact that he didn't tighten his helmet back up once he'd taken it off, but the bike people won't care.

I think the breakaway is dead. They thought that they had got rid of Max and showed their cards lik a bunch of fish. Hopefully someone totally independent and sensible will get it. I really hope Ari Vatenen gets it because he is never goin to have someone penalised for doing donuts and he is Finnish.

The way the sport is going, why would anyone want to do donuts. The stands are empty; and half the time they are full they are full of people on corporate hospitality junkets, being there to be seen and not to see the racing

Was just discussing this with Mr C.

My argument: You get to watch tennis all day every day, and not have an actual job.

His response: But you always have to watch the same man. It's not like you can just go and watch the women's instead.

  • Journeyer27/06/2009 at 13:37

His response: But you always have to watch the same man. It's not like you can just go and watch the women's instead.

Denmark is a bicycle country so it's expense we can do without. The odd time we do need a car we can easily borrow one. Tonight we are both going to a party in Copenhagen (150km away) and can take a train there and back...

Ahh its the humidty that kills. I heart Melbourne because its not ever humid so even 40+ days are bearable, whereas in Auckland 25 makes you want to die because when its 100% humidity.

I have survived in Melbourne without a car for more than a year, people seem shocked when I tell them that, but I'm one suburb away from the CBD and everywhere I need to go has trams and trains. I haven't needed a car yet, and if I do in the future, well, I can't legally drive here anyway :D

It really, really has. When you look at all the women who have been #1 in the last few years, they are all pretty lacklustre. The womens game has been bad for a while. Bring back Justine Henin!

What is up with people and spoiling the fun today?

those "Aus Fanatics" are definitely spoiling the fun on court 2. If I was there I'd punch them in the face.

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 14:57

Pics are now uploading. Talk amongst yourselves as usual, this may take a while...

Ralf Schumacher 7th in qualifying for DTM at Norisring? Surely not!

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 14:59

    hehehehehe.

it's just one of those days. its raining here, booo

Does DTM now have a 4-part qualifying system compared to F1's 3?

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:00

Does DTM now have a 4-part qualifying system compared to F1's 3?

I thought it was a free for all for the positions up to 11, then the top 10 each do a lap, but i'm likely to be wrong

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:02

I thought it was a free for all for the positions up to 11, then the top 10 each do a lap, but i'm likely to be wrong

It turns out i am. I think it has a 3 part quali

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 15:06

It turns out i am. I think it has a 3 part quali

If it's only 3 parts, then why is Q4 mentioned?

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:07

If it's only 3 parts, then why is Q4 mentioned?

not a clue, but i just read "in the first of the three sessions"

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:08

not a clue, but i just read "in the first of the three sessions"

you're right though, autosport says Q4. how odd

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 15:09

not a clue, but i just read "in the first of the three sessions"

    From Autosport:

"Ralf Schumacher, Maro Engel and Jamie Green all stayed out and thought they had got themselves into Q4, but they exceeded the maximum number of laps, so missed out on the pole shootout."

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 15:09

If it's only 3 parts, then why is Q4 mentioned?

    Q4 was the QE2

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 15:10

you're right though, autosport says Q4. how odd

Well there's 20 cars on the grid so maybe it goes:

    Q1: P20 - P16

    Q2: P15 - P11

    Q3: P10 - P6

    Q4: P5 - P1

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:10

"Ralf Schumacher, Maro Engel and Jamie Green all stayed out and thought they had got themselves into Q4, but they exceeded the maximum number of laps, so missed out on the pole shootout."

So it looks like Q1-Q3 are for up to 5th place, and then Q4 is a single lap shoutout for pole

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:11

Well there's 20 cars on the grid so maybe it goes:

with Q4 being each car doing a single lap.

"After a long delay while the situation was cleared up, that left Scheider and Ekstrom battling the Mercedes of Bruno Spengler and Gary Paffett for pole, with the C-class drivers going first in the one lap showdown."

    sorted!

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 15:14

    sorted!

Interesting. With less cars in the final session, it must make it more exciting. I likes it! :D

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 15:15

Interesting. With less cars in the final session, it must make it more exciting. I likes it! :D

its exactly the same as F1 quali (good) just with less cars going through in Q3 and i used to love single lap quali, so Q4 is good too

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 15:17

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 16:46

    Can your PSP call NZ?

I don't know, I've never tried. But having Skype on an iPhone on a contract would still be a stupidly expensive way of doing it because it'd still cost me minimum of $2400. Cheaper to buy outright.

  • Christine27/06/2009 at 16:46

but you said, i think on your blog that you don't want an ipod touch?

I don't. But at least I get something in return for my kidney, instead of him just stealing it.

Evening all. Hope your days have been better than mine....

    Whyyyy?

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:27

theres a lot of empty seats at centre court.

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 17:31

    Whyyyy?

Just a pants day at work! I had a fight with my boss and he made me cry because he's mean like that....

Got another long day to come tomorrow and I'm just dreading going in! Roll on Monday!!

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 17:31

I'm rather tired and this week has felt very, very long. Like 1 minute feeling like 2. I'm off for a nap - if I'm not around later then I shall see you guys on Sunday. :)

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 17:33

theres a lot of empty seats at centre court.

I was thinking that! Who queue's in the street for days to get tickets then doesn't watch the match?

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:33

I was thinking that! Who queue's in the street for days to get tickets then doesn't watch the match?

all the corporate people who get free tickets probably. That's what happens down here, it's all the reserved seats that sit empty.

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:34

I was going to say why on earth is Justin Timberlake there, but he was probably watching Andy Roddick.

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 17:36

all the corporate people who get free tickets probably. That's what happens down here, it's all the reserved seats that sit empty.

You'd think they'd let people in off the hill.... Make someone's day. I mean someone might as well sit in them!

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:37

You'd think they'd let people in off the hill.... Make someone's day. I mean someone might as well sit in them!

I guess there is always the fear they'll turn up later. When I went to the semi here this year everyone bothered to show up for the last set, probably just so they could say "oh yes, I watched that Federer fellow win"

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 17:40

I reckon if you're not there as the match starts, you've missed your chance.... Could let you back in for the next one. I guess they won't do that though because as you said, it's the important folks who've got the seats...

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:41

The thing that I found amazing was my match had 'start of play: 7.30' on the tickets, and at 7.25 they still hadn't let us in. There was 15,000 people milling outside in a space that really wasn't big enough for everyone. Terrible organisation.

  • Flibster27/06/2009 at 17:42

all the corporate people who get free tickets probably. That's what happens down here, it's all the reserved seats that sit empty.

More than likely. Often used them to for my own advantage. I regularly get free tickets to the Albert Hall from the other half.

As she's a PA to one of the directors any corporate tickets that are not going to be used get passed onto her for advertising around all the other PA and so on. As such, we get first pick. :D

Seen Eric Clapton, Jewel, Van Morrison, Soloman Burke, Billy Connolly, several nights at The Proms, Crowded House, Cirque du Soleil amongst many others.

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 17:46

You'd think that the firms could send someone or anything!! Even if it's the cleaner.... i just think it's horrific that I can't get tickets to go when I like tennis but some suit can get as many as he wants and can't even be bothered goin!

  • Flibster27/06/2009 at 17:48

It's rare the tickets go unwanted - I'll go see almost anything - if I won't take them, then someone else will.

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 17:50

At sports a lot of the time the corporates prefer to sit in their little air conditioned suites with the free food and drink and watch the game on the TV screens.

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 18:08

I'm not so much of a fan of Hindhaugh anymore, he dosen't like Jake (BBC F1) because of what he wears and he thinks EJ is the best thing on there....hmmm

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:17

poor Troicki, he looks broken :(

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 18:46

    Woo and indeed, flippin' hoo!

I got the last Blask 32GB iPhone at the Carphone Warehouse on the way home!

Never underestimate the power of Rage Against The Machine ;)

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:47

hooray! but Boo at the Apple Store!

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 18:47

    *black*

    [cos blask isn't a colour]

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 18:48

hooray! but Boo at the Apple Store!

If you want White or 16GB then they're good

Seems Black 32 is very popular

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:50

If you want White or 16GB then they're good

I don't think I know anyone with a white iPhone, or a white iPod unless they got it before other colours existed. Apple should just stop making them.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 18:52

I don't think I know anyone with a white iPhone, or a white iPod unless they got it before other colours existed. Apple should just stop making them.

At the original store the assistant was asking if I wanted White

But's it's White, was all I could say. She didn't say it but her eyes said "Yeah, I know"

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:52

I'm kind of hoping that The Amazing Roof That Will Save Tennis doesn't get used and we have to wait a whole extra year to see it. All the hype for nothing.

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:54

But's it's White, was all I could say. She didn't say it but her eyes said "Yeah, I know"

I could get my TV in white if I wanted. I declined. I can buy other colour faceplates for $500 each. I don't know if anyone in the world would be willing to spend that to make their TV not TV coloured.

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:54

Ah! Roof! That's cheating, the matches are finished

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 18:55

Oh they're moving a match there? THATS ROOF CHEATING.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 18:59

I paid about £100 more than a similar model for a silver/grey washing machine cos it matched the fridge and oven, my girlfriend at the time thought I was mad

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 19:00

I paid about £100 more than a similar model for a silver/grey washing machine cos it matched the fridge and oven, my girlfriend at the time thought I was mad

Matching I can understand, it bothered me when the trend for silver electronics started and I had to buy a new stereo that didn't match any of my other stuff.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 19:09

    I agree with her, you're mad ;-)

I would have never paid the 15% more that it cost the silver fridge instead of the white I bought...

  • Flibster27/06/2009 at 19:11

    Where is everybody, watching tennis?

In the process of doing a full 24hr race at Le Mans.

Currently into my 4th 2hr stint - lying in 5th place due to a little off and mangling the rear bodywork a bit and getting a puncture.

Catching up on the Audi in 4th though.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 19:12

    I agree with her, you're mad ;-)

I would have never paid the 15% more that it cost the silver fridge instead of the white I bought...

It wasn't the same model but specs were not far off

Kitchen would've have looked a lot worse which will be important when I sell

Saving more than the initial outlay

  • Lukeh27/06/2009 at 19:12

Although I'm strangely spending my time going through that homeless show with the celebrities on BBC1 last week on the iPlayer trying to find a certain instrumental in the background...

  • Lukeh27/06/2009 at 19:14

Ooh I found it! yay :)

  • guille230627/06/2009 at 19:15

It wasn't the same model but specs were not far off

OK, in my case they were! In any case, all my appliances are white, so I'm actually following the same path... :-)

At Dad's on babysitting duty. Have just caught up on comments for last night / this morning, v.funny!

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 19:24

"now is the right time to plant if you want ripe strawberries for Christmas"

not going to lie, Christine's strawberries are really, really, really making me want to try my hand at gardening.

i got 2 icecreams. God i hate making decisions.

We should never hook up, I am so bad at decision-making.

With the procrastinating as well I'd say you're the female version of me, but I really don't like tennis.

  • Pat W27/06/2009 at 19:35

christine's blog has got me in such a Dr Who mood now

This would be a good time to catch up on blogs and start emptying that big queue in the feed reader, good idea.

Glastonbury on the telly, although it is only Kasabian. Half the time I swear I only watch because it is Glasto and I feel I'm meant to.

  • Amy27/06/2009 at 19:36

So the tennis players are complaining about the light but it looks fine to me. TV must make things more daylighty. The things you learn.

  • Lukeh27/06/2009 at 19:37

I'm watching a lot less than usual. Blur tomorrow, since (name drop again) I'm seeing 'em Thursday I'm not sure if watching tomorrow will get me pumped up or ruin it.

  • Pat W27/06/2009 at 19:50

btw ta to Steven for the blog shoutout yesterday, I did wonder if anyone used the previews :-)

I did cleaning on Weds, washing today, ironing planned tomorrow.

The trick is to have something interesting going on at the same time. I usually listen to podcasts or catch up on iPlayer stuff.

Yup, after the BMW shindig. I don't think we actually were meant to be there, but that was the only way out by going through there. No-one said we weren't supposed to be there anyways ;)

I'm still constantly uploading more pics so keep your eyes peeled for more :)

  • Scott Woodwiss27/06/2009 at 20:16

I might try and pick up a reasonably priced digital camera with a decent pixel quality and zoom for the WSR next weekend. Will require some hunting, me thinks.

    No. I'd be majorly annoyed.

Agreed, i have many annoyances, but they shall have to be confound to a blog post

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 20:48

Don't forget to buy Applecare then.

I'll likely do that in a few months

More or less the same here. Plus a bit of kids TV, can't beat a bit of Roary.

So fellas, if I set up this petition regarding ticket prices in F1 will you sign it or not? I don't want to end up with 4 votes from my me (meaning the BOL and not sidepodcast Me) Dog, Wombat and Baby. I'd like to aim at 1 million signatures, otherwise I can't be bothered.

I am sure everyone will sign. Someone needs to hold FOTA to their promises and you are just the man for the job. I am sure we will all back you up.

  • Pat W27/06/2009 at 20:53

Only a little but I'd planned to watch Glaso anyway. I enjoyed one of those docos on C4 last night although it basically was just videos with a small amount of text as each one started.

What were you going to watch?

I don't even remember, it's been one of those days. I've made a note I wanted to watch something now though and I've turned over and I'm pretty sure I didn't earmark a MJ documentary....

Have to go back to my film with annoyingly stereotypical Islamic terrorists!

Although you guys should read Christine's blog about the show too which you can find linked in mine, I'd feel terrible plugging mine without talking about hers which inspired me to write mine (in a giant circle there...)

Tonight's launch looks like it may actually happen. The weather is good now but they are watching a storm near Tampa. The launch window opens in 45 minutes and lasts for one hour exactly. (Not one hour and one minute)

question...does mobile doohickey work on less good pc browsers e.g you need IE7 or 8 for doohickey, but will mobile doohickey work with IE5/6?

Yes but they only actually launch every few months. Because the government is writing the cheques they planned a launch tonight with only a 40% chance of good weather

Launch has now been moved to 23:51. The launch window closes at 00:14. Who built a space centre in an area that has weather that kills most launch attempts?

I know Florida has less gravity but there must be somewhere with the right gravity and better weather

  • Pat W27/06/2009 at 22:29

One day the planet is going to get splattered. If we don't have a way of getting off the rock we are all going to get splattered too.

What we need is starships with tractor beams. Or startractors. Then we can tow the thing that is going to splatter us, out of the way.

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 22:29

I know Florida has less gravity but there must be somewhere with the right gravity and better weather

Did you just say Florida has less gravity?!?!

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 22:30

What we need is starships with tractor beams. Or startractors. Then we can tow the thing that is going to splatter us, out of the way.

The Dr has it covered, he'll just throw a big ol' noose round the rock and get the Tardis to put it away

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:31

What we need is starships with tractor beams. Or startractors. Then we can tow the thing that is going to splatter us, out of the way.

What we need first is a way of identifying rocks that may splatter the planet early enough that we can do something about it. Right now we could have 99 starship Enterpises and we would still be screwed. The last huge asteroid that passed between us and the moon was identified two days before it arrived.

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 22:31

isn't proper doohickey better on the iphone though?

it is, was trying a few things. Assessing my options. Think I will need to bring my charger everywhere for the next few days :)

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:32

Did you just say Florida has less gravity?!?!

Yep. The nearer the equator the less gravity. So all weight watchers need to do is move to the tropics and they automatically weigh less

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:33

The Dr has it covered, he'll just throw a big ol' noose round the rock and get the Tardis to put it away

We only have one Tardis and that is tied up with the RSPCRF1 project

  • Andy Taylor27/06/2009 at 22:34

Yep. The nearer the equator the less gravity. So all weight watchers need to do is move to the tropics and they automatically weigh less

That's not quite accurate, the gravity is about the same, you're just moving faster.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:35

That's not quite accurate, the gravity is about the same, you're just moving faster.

There is less effective gravity. That is why Europe launches all ESA missions from central America.

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 22:36

That's not quite accurate, the gravity is about the same, you're just moving faster.

surely the earth moves at the same speed wherever you are? it being a sphere and all

  • me27/06/2009 at 22:37

We only have one Tardis and that is tied up with the RSPCRF1 project

we must be able to get dispensation from jordan to save the world?

  • Bassano Clapper27/06/2009 at 22:38

Yep. The nearer the equator the less gravity. So all weight watchers need to do is move to the tropics and they automatically weigh less

is that a centrifugal thing and how much of a difference does it actually make? I would have thought close to nothing

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:39

surely the earth moves at the same speed wherever you are? it being a sphere and all

You have to think of the Earth as a series of slices. At the pole the diameter of th slice is zero. At the equator it is 8000 miles ish. So the linear speed of anything at the equator is just over 1000miles an hour due to planetary rotation so you have a centrifugal effect.

  • Alison27/06/2009 at 22:39

surely the earth moves at the same speed wherever you are? it being a sphere and all

Think about it though. It's spinning around its axis. Imagine standing at one of the poles, even though the earth is spinning, you're not displaced at all.

At the centre, you're displaced the most and to complete the circle in the same time as the rest you have to cover more distance in the same time. Isn't that by definition what speed is.

  • Christine27/06/2009 at 22:39

Will we be able to cryogenically freeze people before the splattering occurs? Just thinking we could save Bruce for the opportune moment.

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:40

we must be able to get dispensation from jordan to save the world?

The Tardis is Alianora's department although the last I heard Jordan borrowed it and lost it

  • Steven Roy27/06/2009 at 22:40

is that a centrifugal thing and how much of a difference does it actually make? I would have thought close to nothing

It is minimal but the external tank of the shuttle contains half a million US gallons of fuel so any saving is worth having.

  • Pat W27/06/2009 at 22:41

What we need first is a way of identifying rocks that may splatter the planet early enough that we can do something about it. Right now we could have 99 starship Enterpises and we would still be screwed. The last huge asteroid that passed between us and the moon was identified two days before it arrived.

  • Jon Waldock27/06/2009 at 22:41

Think about it though. It's spinning around its axis. Imagine standing at one of the poles, even though the earth is spinning, you're not displaced at all.

yeah true, i forgot about the whole poles thing, mainly because even though the earth spins on its axis, the whole thing also revolves.

  • Andy Taylor27/06/2009 at 22:41

is that a centrifugal thing and how much of a difference does it actually make? I would have thought close to nothing

On the ground it makes practically no difference, but the mechanical advantage to rocket launches is enormous.

They showed it with the shuttle in shot. It was even smallr than it looked on its own. Once the boosters separated they showed it from behind and instead of looking like a rocket burning it looked like a torch with dodgey batteries.

  • Ollie27/06/2009 at 23:17

    Quattro Formaggio

The cheese that knows exactly how grip is needed and regulates the power to all four corners to ensure a safe yet speedy corner entry/exit.

  • Andy Taylor27/06/2009 at 23:17

I have no idea what you mean. I got two slices of bread and put small piles of cheese in it.

I've just read that's because they left the radar switched on and it was sending data to the computer as well as the rest of the instruments and caused an overflow. Not the computer's fault at all.

It was JFK's fault for setting a ridiculous deadline. They were nowhere near equipped to go to the moon with any degree of certainty of hitting the moon let alone getting back

I disagree, they had a pretty good chance of hitting the moon. The speed of impact was less certain.

My opinion of mixing Tequila, Whiskey, Scotch or Bourbon is a crime. For me either straight or on the rocks, besides champagne is bad grapes grown in bad soil. Now I'm off to fetch another beer.
