It was all going much too well, and then Max came along and ruined it. It was bound to happen on Thursday, because that is never a good day, and now we are left with the repurcussions once more. Bah. Instead, I will talk about other things going on in F1:

  • There's a lot of talk about iPhone apps at the moment, with the official F1 in high demand, and a new Red Bull one as well. James has a quick rundown of what to expect, and we'll be doing a review of the F1 app shortly. Stay tuned for that.
  • McLaren have said that it was simply a matter of circumstance that saw the KERS initiative fail. Whitmarsh said the concept was good, but the timing was just a little off. It seems as though the system is officially dead to F1.
  • We saw a prime example of reporting going wrong yesterday when it was rumoured that the Nurburgring would be naming a grandstand after Vettel. As it turns out, it's a Red Bull package, with fans paying a price to get a special Red Bull themed weekend, hence the name of the grandstand, plus a "free" hat and things like that.

That's all for now. I think we have moved beyond the capabilities of the happy place, and therefore, I will see you in the comments. Maybe.

I was looking through some of my F1 videos to find something that can distract Christine from this mess and cheer her up again. I thought some cute animals from Canada would be good.

    Well I've tried

Let's hope F1 / FOTA don't bring Grands Prix sponsor names to American levels.

IRL at Richmond this week is the "SunTrust Indy Challenge". Which is just about passable.

N-Word at Loudon has the "Lenox Industrial Tools 301".

    Hi guys,

    ABOUT KERS:

I´m right now trying to write and develop something about KERS as the main problem behind the top teams struggle.

I wrote that in Ollie´s blog:

“…It is just a feeling because I do not have info enough about it, but I think that KERS is the main problem behind the top teams struggle this year and the Theissen´s testimony is a good description of the challenge in how to make the car fast in terms of aerodynamic, it offers at least a good clue:

We evaluated different alleys, proceeding with KERS or proceeding on the aero side and what could we do with no KERS on board.

We had made some significant progress on the aero side which does not allow to fit KERS, and we have taken a decision just a few days ago to no more run KERS this year because we see a more promising alley in developing the aero

    — Mario Theissen

Stefano has said almost the same thing:

we are dealing in an environment that is totally different.

We are in a racing environment where they are a lot of things, a lot of compromises, that we have to take in order to ensure that this new technology could be beneficial to the performance of the car. At the end of the day, this is what it is all about.

The reality is that the facts show that KERS in the way that it is now is not ready to be performing in this set of regulations.

    Martin Whitmarsh said:

The regulations are incredibly wide, and they are challenging in that to develop a KERS system within the weight and packaging constraints of F1, with the power and energy limitations and still have performance is difficult.

All the teams that focused in developing KERS properly failed and their cars look too much sensitive to any track change or to any upgrade added. All of them complain about the lack of downforce. This can’t be a coincidence…

    Ollie thinks that:

…KERS has distracted many teams from other areas of development that needed more attention early on this year, and I think BMW is just one of those teams.

The teams that do not develop their cars around the system seems to have a much more steady performance through the season than BMW, Renault, Ferrari and McLaren. Ok Toyota has had a fade, but is back again fighting for points and even podiums — ups and downs that are usual in any season for any team…

Interesting that the first time that I commented this was in the Clives blog´s and Clive ask me back: why not get rid of the system? Weeks later we discovered that the cars were so early designed around the KERS system, that the only thing good on them was the system itself.

We had all that mess regarding the diffuser, but KERS was the main problem, I’m sure about that.

Sorry or the long, long and bad written comment, but I´m trying to write something about and I´d like to hear another opinion and I know that you guys had some very interesting discussions about KERS here…

By the way, I love the slogan:

"All for F1, and F1 for All"

    ABOUT KERS:

I think one of the biggest problems is that the FIA limited it to 6 seconds a lap, if they wanted to do it properly and have some real innovation it should have been unlimited.

That one I got - US news is all over that one!

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 00:07

    Hi Becken

I think there is one fundamental problem with KERS and that is that there are too many limits on it. If the teams were allowed to recover and re-use as much energy as they could then everyone would run it and throw money at it because of the advantage it gave. Because Max put so many limits on it the teams that did not use it and instead spent their development money on aero have done better.

They also picked the worse possible year to introduce KERS because the front tyres this year are too wide for the rears so we have had all the problems with teams having to move weight forward. Next year with narrower front tyres the weigh would be less of a penalty.

Yep. Max says he is staying unless Luca says sorry

He had to do it by this afternoon.

" You yourself must issue a suitable correction and apology at your press conference this afternoon."

I guess that means he is running. who knows though

  • me26/06/2009 at 00:10

We had all that mess regarding the diffuser, but KERS was the main problem, I’m sure about that.

i disagree slightly. williams have been pushing on with kers development, to the point they went in a different direction to other teams, and bought a whole company to develop the system. a system that has yet to run in anger.

    do williams look distracted?

to me it's no coincidence that the teams who are doing badly this year helped shape the rules (ferrari, mclaren, renault). i've no idea why that might be, but i don't believe it to be a fluke.

kers is a convenient excuse though, hence why you're hearing a lot about it right now. it was also a cause championed by max, and he's not exactly flavour of the month either.

  • me26/06/2009 at 00:11

Quite apart from the obvious problems concerning the FIA/FOTA fight, does this mean that new methods of recording performance will be needed to counteract the inevitable incorporation of time machine technology onto the cars?

  • Paul26/06/2009 at 01:03

i wouldn't have thought sonic would work. but damn it's good.

Oh I haven't even seen that. I heart that game.

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:04

    He has control

Was it FOTA who said Boeri took over?

As for Craw, wasn't it him rather than Max who chaired the WMSC meeting?

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:05

i guess maybe he trusted them, less that we trusted him?

Max trusts FOTA?! not in a million years.

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:05

Mrs C have you seen these before?

    http://www.markstechnologynews.com/2009/05/panda-usb-flash-drive-bears-your-files.html

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:05

Was it FOTA who said Boeri took over?

    I dont think so...

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:05

Was it FOTA who said Boeri took over?

    apparently.

  • Christine26/06/2009 at 01:06

Mrs C have you seen these before?

    Haha, no! That's kinda... weird.

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:06

    I dont think so...

I first heard it from Joe - I wonder who informed him as such.

Joe later said it wasn't true, but the MSM reported it anyway.

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:07

    Haha, no! That's kinda... weird.

Might look odd plugged in to something!

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:08

    I dont think so...

I first heard it from Joe - I wonder who informed him as such.

Joe later said it wasn't true, but the MSM reported it anyway.

    max said in his letter:

"I was therefore astonished to learn that FOTA has been briefing the press that Mr Boeri has taken charge of Formula 1, something which you know is completely untrue."

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:08

    apparently.

Max's letter says FOTA have been briefing the press about it.

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:09

Max's letter says FOTA have been briefing the press about it.

my guess is a team member told joe, but when he checked with the fia, they denied it?

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:09

"I was therefore astonished to learn that FOTA has been briefing the press that Mr Boeri has taken charge of Formula 1, something which you know is completely untrue."

I havent seen any direct quotes though.

Could max have leaked that just to attack fota with it the next day?

I wouldnt put it past him

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:10

    max said in his letter:

"I was therefore astonished to learn that FOTA has been briefing the press that Mr Boeri has taken charge of Formula 1, something which you know is completely untrue."

But Alia said on F1F that:

It would appear that Max doesn’t know enough about how the FIA works to be able to run it. Besides, what evidence does he have that it was FOTA who made the Boeri comments?

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:10

I havent seen any direct quotes though.

    that is a direct quote?

autosport say max sent it to luca. i guess we don't know if luca ever received it?

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:11

Could max have leaked that just to attack fota with it the next day?

I wouldnt put it past him

    For sure.

Now, if it didn't really come from FOTA, they should say so.

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:11

But Alia said on F1F that:

    that's your evidence? you're nuts m'lad.

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:11

autosport say max sent it to luca. i guess we don't know if luca ever received it?

did FOTA receive it before today's meeting? they seem to have made no mention of it?

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:11

Now, if it didn't really come from FOTA, they should say so.

what makes you think it didn't come from fota?

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:12

autosport say max sent it to luca. i guess we don't know if luca ever received it?

I meant no team member quoted as saying Mr Boeri is the new boss

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:12

    that's your evidence? you're nuts m'lad.

well, it's not evidence per se, but she has a point. how would he know it was FOTA who said it, if all we've seen about it are floating rumors without a proper source?

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:13

I meant no team member quoted as saying Mr Boeri is the new boss

fair enough, so it was off the record. whoever gave joe the info in the first place, must've been a reasonably solid source, no?

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:13

I meant no team member quoted as saying Mr Boeri is the new boss

    that's what i meant.

i'm not saying it didn't come from FOTA. IF it didn't, they should say so.

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:13

well, it's not evidence per se, but she has a point. how would he know it was FOTA who said it, if all we've seen about it are floating rumors without a proper source?

i would imagine he spoke to journalists who printed the quote and asked them!!

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:13

fair enough, so it was off the record. whoever gave joe the info in the first place, must've been a reasonably solid source, no?

solid enough to post it on his blog, yes.

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:14

fair enough, so it was off the record. whoever gave joe the info in the first place, must've been a reasonably solid source, no?

He did backtrack on it though, i wonder if it was a maxite

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:15

i would imagine he spoke to journalists who printed the quote and asked them!!

Thats probably more likely... but it creates a new question...

Why would they make it up?

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:15

Why would they make it up?

    Good question.

  • me26/06/2009 at 01:15

Why would they make it up?

now that is a good question.

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:16

now that is a good question.

heh. and we come to a halt.

MJ passing away is 10 times more shocking though. didn't see it coming.

  • Christine26/06/2009 at 01:17

So, I've been up long enough to reminisce about the MegaDrive, watch some Brigitte Dale and buy a URL.

Must be time to go back to bed.

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:17

now that is a good question.

Unless they wanted the war to reignite to give them more reason to breakaway looking like they did all they could...

Or were they gambling that they could make it happen just by anouncing it and hoping max would conform or look bad?

Both look pretty weak to me, it must be something else

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 01:17

So, I've been up long enough to reminisce about the MegaDrive, watch some Brigitte Dale and buy a URL.

That is true. But this came out of nowhere - we've heard little from him over the past year. So for this to come out of the blue is shocking. Partly denial, I guess?

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:20

    boo

He may want to have kept it private. The need for everyone to know everything these days is beyond me

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:24

He may want to have kept it private. The need for everyone to know everything these days is beyond me

That is true, but still, most artists usually go through a period of hospitalization and such, which is usually reported pretty quickly. No such luck for Michael, sadly.

  • Journeyer26/06/2009 at 01:26

    Good night, Nick.

    Too true, too true.

    Good morning

    Morning, Alison!

hm, typhoon approaching, looks like very wet Friday and Saturday ahead

Odd story: We were sent home from work Wednesday because they said the typhoon was going to hit Manila at 8PM. It didn't rain a peep all night - the storm changed course. School was cancelled two days in a row due to storm signals, but we saw more sun than rain.

thanks for sending it here then :-) we 5 mins sun 5 mins heavy rain 5 mins sun 5 mins heavy rain ...

Ahh Friday evening. Nothing like an entire weekend ahead to make a girl feel happy.

  • Amy26/06/2009 at 07:18

oh and because I didn't answer "what’s wrong with hewitt?…" this morning

He is quite possibly one of the most hated men in Australian sport. I have never met anyone who supports him. His personality is horrible. If he was playing Murray, I'd want Murray to win every time. He's that bad.

Reason why I'm not keen on him:

    "COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!"

  • Amy26/06/2009 at 07:33

Pah. Even in Denmark that's cold - that's the temp just after sunrise!

  • Christine26/06/2009 at 07:51

Finally, from the WImbledon live blog:

When I say rain, it's now barely spitting after an earlier downpour - but nonetheless, the ROOF IS ON!

I have been freezing on previous 16 days, today we had lunch out in the sun. I think the temperature site is wrong :D

Hoorah :D Quite different purpose from the roof down here that they close due to extreme heat :D

  • Alison26/06/2009 at 07:54

There's thunder forecast early afternoon. We could use it, it's far to humid, I'm getting a headache.

My shower set off the smoke alarms in my house and I've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to hit the button with a broom handle because we don't have any chairs tall enough to reach them. To add to the trauma, once I finally got them off, all the ringing has flattened the battery of one of them and now it's doing the intermittent beeping thing....

Weird Silly Season rumor of the day from Twitter:

Both Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher linked with Toro Rosso for 2010, apparently JV had talks with Tost.

This is probably total rubbish, but hey, it gives us something to talk about. This is as weird a rumor as it gets.

Another news item, with a more official source: BBC's F1 Mole - or Andrew Benson - or whoever:

Virgin could prove the Manor born

Basically, they're saying Virgin will end their deal with Brawn and they'll make a deal with Manor instead (with the team possibly being renamed Virgin).

The same article says YouTube will also sponsor USF1 from 2010.

Ralf Schumacher?? That’d just be madness. He’s hardly the future of the sport…

Which is why I think it's rubbish. It's not like F1 is in need of German drivers, either. But hey - if Ralf wants a drive, he'd probably offer it for minimal pay. I'm guessing this rumor started because Ralf is good friends with Tost.

JV is another shocking name to come out. I know he visited practically every team in the paddock at Silverstone. But is he that desperate for an F1 drive that he'd take a seat at Toro Rosso?

He is quite possibly one of the most hated men in Australian sport. I have never met anyone who supports him. His personality is horrible. If he was playing Murray, I'd want Murray to win every time. He's that bad.

The fact the Aussies hate him makes him so loved at Wimbledon...

For Amy, on the subject of the soon-to-be-born Saviour of Tennis:

Rog's pregnant wife Mirka did not watch his match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Wednesday because she wasn't feeling too hot. Fed is refusing to reveal the baby's due date. "Is it still 'til 10 August, more or less?" he was asked the other day. "I never said it," came the reply. "I don't know who told you, but you can speculate as much as you want."

Companies like to use youtube for promotion - fancier channels, links from homepage = better exposure - it would be a good way for USF1 to increase awareness amongst 16-40yos, all over the world (not just in America, although I would imagine this is the aim). OK, some of the other teams do it to an extent, but it could be a good platform for them to gain fans. So, it could be more of a mutual deal than straightforward sponsorship.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 11:03

    Apparently the Boeri thing was a complete fake, I don’t think anyone dares step to max untill the election {Comment #100}

If Max wants to stop rumours like this in future, maybe he should try saying exactly what arrangements would be in place in the interim instead of simply saying he was delegating power over F1 until October and leaving everyone else to fill the gaps.

Given Michael Boeri's position (a conservative FIA Senate member who understands Max's thinking, is too old to have ambitions concerning the permanent presidency and who acted in Max's place during last year's scandal), it was a perfectly reasonable assumption to make, for FOTA, the journalists and us. It just happened to be very, very wrong. It just doesn't feel like any leak was necessary for this to happen. I've also seen no suggestion, apart from the FIA (who said several items that were contradictory and others that were total nonsense in the same statement), that FOTA had anything whatsoever to do with the Boeri rumours. Max, on the other hand, worded the FIA statement in such a way as to imply it, simply because of precedent and the way the FIA works.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 11:06

    that is a direct quote? {Comment #122}

As in, we don't have a direct quote of anyone from FOTA saying anything regarding Boeri.

  • Rachel26/06/2009 at 11:10

Youtube though? anyone that is likely to use it will be well aware of it by now surely?

On a joe public front, but youtube could use USF1 to show companies that they should be on youtube promoting their brand to a younger generation, and then charge them for the privilege.

Google would be more likely to build their brand up and promote things like chrome and android. I think the BBC have just seen who is funding USFI, and put 2 and 2 together missing the fact that the guy sold the company!

Because Google isn't big enough already ;)

Also Hurley is worth >$500million so he could just be investing in his own right.

ahh OK. He isn't on the drivers list on the site so I was confused.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 11:16

    that’s your evidence? {Comment #124}

It is the obvious weakness of Max's statement. A lack of evidence supporting it may not disprove the notion in itself, but Max tends to be give verse, line and chapter when he has something that supports his position on something. Read in context with the rest of the F1F article, that point illustrates that the most likely version is that Max has once again made it up as he's gone along. It doesn't exclude other possibilities (including the one that he might be telling the truth on the ultimate source of the Boeri rumours), but this version does make a lot of sense.

Note that he attributed the power in the FIA concerning the FIA to three different parts of the organisation, in a way that made the statements contradictory with each other. He's also re-opened the possibility of staying on using an excuse that was not permitted under the previous day's FIA statement.

The Boeri thing was a rational filling-in of the space left by the FIA's statement concerning Max. It looked suspiciously like Max had been forced out of office; if not overtly, at least by the circumstances making it clear he would never again be taken seriously by the other powers-that-be in F1. The "no role after October" is nonsense, but it was the FIA that said Max would be stepping down, so it is the FIA that is responsible for that particular media error.

As for the "dictator" suggestion... ...if Max wants to know why people think that, he need look no further than the unilateral regulation changes he made on March 17. Against the FIA procedures, against the Sporting Regulations, against the will of the teams - but Max did those changes anyway, and paid a modest price for doing so. The teams are fed up of being stomped on by a power-drunk president and a lack of self-insight on the president's part won't help convince them that they're safe around him.

The statement looked like someone who was angry and was looking for excuses to sustain that anger, not someone rationally looking at the evidence and attempting to contribute to the improvement of the sport.

    Ah, my mistake.

Its difficult to not get into trouble in the middle of the night without some controversy to discuss...

  • Flibster26/06/2009 at 12:05

    Hmmm.

Just replaced a failing hard drive in my laptop. Before the battery life was around the 4 hour mark when fully charged and unplugged.

Replaced a 40gb HDD with a 64gb SSD and it's now giving me 2h 50 minutes battery life.

Aren't SSD's meant to me more power efficient?

    Mosley promises ‘explosive’ memoirs

Does anyone write memoirs while they're in office? If it means Max will leave the Presidency in October, then I'm all for it. :D

Not to mention it might make a good and/or funny read...

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 12:32

Does anyone write memoirs while they're in office? If it means Max will leave the Presidency in October, then I'm all for it. :D

Far too many people... people use them to attack political oponents an cause scandels which they can exploit e.t.c.

Even Wayne Rooney has 2 autobiography's and he is my age!

I read recently a child prodigy in some country, no idea where, but she was about 8 and was writing her autobiography. Shocking.

  • Lukeh26/06/2009 at 13:43

That was terrifying on Wimbledone there, a man wearing a tshirt with a picture of roger federer screaming, and it was all crumpled and creased creating quite a scary image...

Another new story on AUTOSPORT, another extremely depressing picture of max on the front page. As the stories get worse, so do the facial expressions.

Compared to Wimbledon where my only beef is that there are two matches on at the same time I want to watch. Stupid F1.

Another new story on AUTOSPORT, another extremely depressing picture of max on the front page. As the stories get worse, so do the facial expressions.

"We have heard a lot from FOTA about an independent court of appeal, yet during the controversy over the "double diffuser", a manufacturer team repeatedly lobbied me (wholly improperly) to intervene with the FIA Court of Appeal and have the double diffuser declared illegal."

he knows where the bodies are buried.

Well you dont need to replace the hour and the miniute, even though that would be sensible.

In the digital age, have everyone using the same time, with a 24hour clock, and every country nominates there own working hours, for example in Melbourne you would go to work at 00:00

I just googled Heikki Kovalainen + tennis to work out what the chances are of him and Roger ever being in the same place at the same time.

    I am not obsessed...

Result I get is a blog from 2007 where he says "After a quick sleep and a tidy of some very messy suitcases, I switched on my new Playstation 3 and started to play some tennis."

I think he is me? This is what I do on my PS3? If he's not me, I really wish I knew his PSN username :D

You need to learn how to say blindingly obvious statements.....e.g

In a letter from Mosely to FOTA....

""You have suggested to the media that I was a 'dictator'"

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 15:20

You need to learn how to say blindingly obvious statements.....e.g

That does not mean that the solution will be good or even make sense...

It doesn't seem like FOTA will reply to Max. They just released the presscon transcript - which doesn't have anything untoward.

Shutting up and letting Max do all the talking may be the smartest thing they've ever done.

Just reading the Mole's blog on the BBC and he's saying that USF1 will be sponsored by youtube and Manor sponsored by Virgin.... hmm. Haven't seen any of this from anywhere else though...

Also, he mentioned how James Allen asking the questions was because of Windsor's involvement in a now confirmed team. But we all knew that ;)

Just the lack of anything elsewhere makes me sceptical, although not so much about the Virgin one. I can see Branson moving over to Manor after that interview last week or the week before talking about how their Brawn stuff probably won't be extended further than 2009 and going to a cheaper alternative.

another skill of mine is looking busy when I'm not, and making to do lists but not actually doing any of the tasks on them. Instead I break the tasks down into sub-tasks to make myself look productive when I do one of them.

Ah yes, remember a few months bak when I asked for a logo to go on my racing team's car. Now I know I'm no lukeh, and to be fair, I am pretty lazy. So two questions then

    a) Would you still be alright with the logo being on the car

    b) If yes, do you by any chance have a white version with a black background? But I reckon it will be easy enough to redo in something like Fireworks.

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 19:00

Are you, by any chance, watching Today at Wimbledon?

If that is what's on BBC2 then yes I am

  • Rachel26/06/2009 at 19:06

    Evening.

Anything interesting happening in the F1 world today? Have FOTA grovelled sufficiently for Max to change his mind again?

Max wrote another letter, this time to the WMSC. (from James Allen's blog, I can't find a re-print of the actual letter, and his version is tiny)

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast26/06/2009 at 19:06

Then thats why you would be watching Federer I reckon.

You know one thing I'm annoyed about? The fact that Jenson, Rubens and Ross Brawn were all at one of the Brawn GP merchandise stands signing autograpsh straight after qualifying, and me wanting to get some autographs had absolutely no clue and probably no time to get there provided where I was stood for the session. Grrrr.

They really should give info on driver signing times and locations for fans. I really wanted to get some pics of the drivers and few autographs and stuff. Apart from the BMW guys and Alonso and Grosjean, I had nothing. That really got me when I found out where the Brawn guys had been.

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 19:17

no idea what the story is here. but i (hearts) lewis:

Clearly we need more Lewis. Scared Jake, did donuts and shut EJ up. What a great weekend for him.

Where was the autograph table where there were lots of drivers all at the same time? Were details of that not publicised?

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 19:17

    Exactly

you'll probably find that these things all happen at the same time, and you can't be everywhere at once.

there's also something to be said for going a few times. you'll learn more each year.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast26/06/2009 at 19:17

Grrrr, I hate the EPA. From the petition I signed to save Croft.

Under section 79(1)(g) of the EPA 1990, local authorities have a duty to take reasonably practicable steps to investigate complaints of ‘noise emitted from premises so as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance’.

Why doesn't 71(1)(h) say 'Unless of course you have moved within that residence in the last x amount of years and did not do your freakin research properly?

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 19:18

    2) Nope.

My target for next weekend at the WSR is to make the pitwalk. Both times I've been before I missed it and last year I was annoyed having to watch everyone else down there while I was stuck in the grandstands waiting for the race to start. This year, I WILL be down in that pitlane no matter what! I'm not missing it 3 years in a row.

Just saw Schumacher's lap in the FXX on the re-run of Top Gear. The tyres at the follow through had been moved back 3 or 4 feet. That makes the corner so much easier. You can see the outline of the tyres from their previous position.

True. Has an FXX ever been seen on public roads? No. Mind you, I'm surprised people are claiming it can't get over speed bumps. I find it even more puzzling that the T1 can.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 21:01

    I read recently a child prodigy in some country, no idea where, but she was about 8 and was writing her autobiography. {Comment #338}

Well, I suppose she is a prodigy. One does have to wonder whether, and how much, is ghost-written though.

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 21:03

Well, I suppose she is a prodigy. One does have to wonder whether, and how much, is ghost-written though.

Surely we have to be surprised if anything other than her name is written first hand?

  • Flibster26/06/2009 at 21:04

I find it even more puzzling that the T1 can.

Surprisingly easily. It's not lower than many of the hypercars they have at the top of the board.

Ok, you're not going to do it at 180mph. But they do make it over.

The fact that Caparo wanted to put a speed bump on the Top gear test track and still take the lap record shows how confident they were.

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 21:04

Interesting that Luca picks Daytona and Sebring as American circuits he enjoyed. Also interesting that max's name is never mentioned.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 21:04

    But isn’t there a difference between an autobio and memoirs? {Comment #346}

There is. Memoirs are supposed to be reflecting back on a life after retirement whereas autobiographies are the overarching genre, covering all writing about the author of that writing.

Amazing how many people who should know better can't tell the difference, though.

    Mosley promises ‘explosive’ memoirs

Does anyone write memoirs while they're in office? If it means Max will leave the Presidency in October, then I'm all for it. :D

Not to mention it might make a good and/or funny read...

Max is not going to write his memoirs. The last thing he wants is to be interviewed repeatedly about his private life. He also lies (what's new) in that item. His wife has lived in France for many years. Does he really think anyone believes that there is some reason stopping her moving to Monaco.

    You know one thing I’m annoyed about? The fact that Jenson, Rubens and Ross Brawn were all at one of the Brawn GP merchandise stands signing autograpsh straight after qualifying, and me wanting to get some autographs had absolutely no clue and probably no time to get there provided where I was stood for the session. {Comment #582}

That was annoying. They publicised Jackie Stewart's signing session before qualifying and mentioned the all-driver session at 5:15pm that day well in advance (though the latter was only open to people with very expensive tickets, people with some sort of paddock pass and competition winners), so why not the Brawn event?

By the photographer's building at the end of the pit lane. I got a photo of the queue of fans that were allowed there. Details were publicised on Silverstone Radio as early as Thursday night, but it was a rather... ...exclusive... event.

just read this article and the following quote interested me :

"When we started EuroNCAP, one of the major manufacturers threatened to quit Formula 1 if we did not abandon our activities. The FIA has to be free to confront the car industry whenever necessary."

    who is he referring to?

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 22:08

    It’s not really a u-turn. It’s more like donuts {Comment #594}

in Melbourne there is one autograph stage...

    ...and then I get angry that McLaren are the only team not on it. {Comment #596}

Did McLaren's drivers ever get fined for that? Those autograph sessions are meant to be compulsory, the FIA are supposed to fine non-participants of the session and I distinctly remember Ian Phillips saying in the 5 Live coverage for Free Practise 2 of the Spanish Grand Prix that he'd ended up having to use this fact to "persuade" Giancarlo Fisichella to turn up for one particular autograph session...

    SuperLeague Formula. Still don’t know why there is even a concept for it. {Comment #621}

Because football teams are the No. 1 experts at spending money in flamboyantly strange ways...

Not that I mind too much as it means I can cheer on yet another branch of the FMS team (in Superleague, better known as the AS Roma team).

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 22:22

Donington is a better circuit than Silverstone and always has been

I like silverstone beause it is different, its not uniquely amazing.

If i wanted to be contraversial i could say donnington is a poor mans suzuka...

    The trouble with F1 is it is a kindergarten with dozens of them saying me me me {Comment #622}

So that's why nobody listens to anyone - because they can't hear the one person at any moment who's talking stuff that's in F1's interests over the "me, me, me" brigade (and wouldn't believe that anything other than "me, me, me" could be said if they could)?

LPG wanted to know why they can't just launch the shuttle and take the knob out in orbit once the shuttle has expanded again. After all, it survived the return journey OK, so it's unlikely to cause a problem.

  • Alianora La Canta26/06/2009 at 22:30

    Has anyone mentioned the story about the complaint about Alan Donnelly? {Comment #680}

    Oh. Dear.

So much for the "scare everyone into submission" tactic. It seems FOTA knows where the bodies are buried as well as the FIA does. I can see this totally demolishing both sides unless all sides tread extremely carefully...

It didn't have half a million gallons of rocket fuel vibrating the shuttle to death on the way back. The launch is massively more violent that the re-entry and landing

Sidepodpanel is not due back until after the current series of Top Gear. I guess the all female show will either be the first or second show of the series depending how confident everyone is.

To me it makes sense for the all female show to be first so that no-one feels that they have to be similar to the previous show(s)

    Apparently Shuttle Atlantis has the knob from a work light wedged between a windowframe and the dashboard in the cockpit. They are trying to remove it without causing further damage to the window, but it could take months to repair! {Comment #772}

Oh no! That must be really frustrating for everyone...

  • Steven Roy26/06/2009 at 22:52

According to the launch blog http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/GOES-O/launch/launch_blog.html

The liftoff of a Delta IV carrying the GOES-O weather satellite is on hold because of a storm over Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The launch team is in a position to quickly resume the countdown if the conditions clear up. Weather Officer Joel Tumbiolo is watching the conditions and will update the controllers every few minutes. The latest the rocket can launch today is 7:14 p.m.

  • Bassano Clapper26/06/2009 at 22:53

Oh no! That must be really frustrating for everyone...

Probably not for the mechanics on overtime ;)

  • Andy Taylor26/06/2009 at 22:56

Worst case scenario is that Atlantis will never launch again. It's only scheduled for 2 more flights, but the cost is enormous compared to the cost of the knob.

    Do you take live Tremayne's?

You only get one shot live but you can do a few on voicemail and Christine will only play the one you like.

Maybe you are like me though and work better live

  • Nick26/06/2009 at 23:25

oops. nick, please, please do a voicemail now.

    we are expecting your call.

How can i be expected to Tremayne without a straight face?

  • Bassano Clapper26/06/2009 at 23:25

    There was one in last week’s Private Eye – No Exorcising of Dogs {Comment #873}

There is a golf clubhouse somewhere in Britain with a sign saying "No Spikes, Denims or Unaccompanied Golf Balls, Please". This is because someone hit a ball on the 18th green, it veered off a bit and went through the clubhouse window...

  • Andy Taylor26/06/2009 at 23:26
