Whilst searching for any reasons today might be notable, I discovered that it is Johnny Herbert's birthday. The former race winner is 45 today and, according to Wikipedia, was last seen in the Speedcar Series. Meanwhile, things are stirring in the F1 world:

  • Following yesterday's revelation that Max claims he won't stand for re-election in October, in return for the teams not going ahead with a breakaway series, we're turning our attention to the FOTA meetings today to hear their side of the story. Are things really as they seem?
  • Amy and I were put into a good mood yesterday, when the recurring feature on F1.com "Ask the Expert" featured Heikki Kovalainen. He answered one particular question correctly and the answer included Franck. Hurrah!
  • Hockenheim appears to have lost all hope for a continued presence on the F1 calendar, as the council have unanimously agreed they don't want to pay Bernie's fees. As 95% shareholders, what the council wants, the council gets. Check out the related F1 Big Picture for this story, too.

That'll do it for now. Feel free to discuss any of the above and all else that crosses your minds, and as per usual, I'll see you in the comments.

Most people in the world seem to be buying it hook line and sinker. I have taken a slightly skeptical line

I think if you learn a 2nd language regardless what it is the next languages are easier.

I disagree, as an English spekaer who has tried Italian,m Spanish and a bit of French - I'd say a non latin-based one would prove quite a challenge

Vietnamese has something like nine words for the same 'form' of letters depending on intonation!

Japanese was quite tricky for me, but then again so is Spanish. I do remember one practise exam I did for Japanese though, where I attempted to order a return train seat only for the teacher to burst into laughter. The practise test pretty much stopped at that point because the teacher found it so funny that I'd inadvertantly ordered an "oxygen seat"...

Max is wriggling already. He was being interviewed on BBC2 news. He was asked how the teams could believe him when he said he would not stand again when he had previously made that commitment abd changed his mind.

His reply was that so long as the teams behaved he was gone.

    And if they don't?

    Well a deal's a deal.

Doesn't sound to me like we have a definite decision not to stand.

Its XMB is Linux Based, you can get it to run something called redhat. I am not sure what that is, but i suspect Garibaldi would like it.

  • Alianora La Canta25/06/2009 at 01:37

Max is wriggling already. He was being interviewed on BBC2 news. He was asked how the teams could believe him when he said he would not stand again when he had previously made that commitment abd changed his mind.

    His reply was that so long as the teams behaved he was gone. {Comment #119}

Oh dear. I think this would be a deal-breaker. It's not like FOTA have been asked to do much of anything apart from a nebulous cost reduction within a time span hopefully extending well past Max Mosley's successor taking the presidency.

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" seems rather apt here in relation to Mr Mosley.

I am a night owl and my body was not designed to work on a planet with a 24 hour day. I need a planet with a 36 hour day

  • Iaian25/06/2009 at 01:58

Can Tilke also share the blame for Hockenheim?

I remember years and years ago playing an F1 video game, (before I was following F1) and the Hockenheim track was this huge circuit with super-long straights with all the tight corners just before the start/finish line. When I went to do some research on Hockenheim a few days ago, I could scarcely recognize the track as being the same one I remember. I read that Tilke had redesigned the track by cutting out all the super-long straights. I then came across what I believe ultimately characterizes Hockenheim's sad fall perfectly.

It was part of the idea of homogenising tracks. Hockenheim was never a great track but it was unique and required a different set up

    Morning, everyone.

Has it been mentioned here that Joe has confirmed that the Boeri story isn't true?

He did have this to say, though:

"Did Bernie Ecclestone hang Max out to dry? Well, look at [it] this way. Three guys went into a room and two came out with jobs."

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 03:00

It was part of the idea of homogenising tracks. Hockenheim was never a great track but it was unique and required a different set up

It was a good track. With the loss of the forest section, it made Monza's low downforce unique.

    And if they don’t?

    Well a deal’s a deal.

Doesn’t sound to me like we have a definite decision not to stand.

Well, there's definitely a deal of sorts. Max follows his end of the bargain as long as FOTA follow their end of the bargain. As long as FOTA do what they agreed to do (which they should, considering most of it is what they proposed to do), then Max will have to be very creative as to how he'd want to run again - because it won't come from FOTA.

They also asked LDM about this, according to JA. He said, "he might, but we won't." He sounds convinced that Mosley won't be able to come back - even if he wants to. I wonder what he knows that we don't...

For those of you who can sleep or bored...

What do you get when you get three F1 world champions and one of the two the best road courses in America? You get the 1994 CART race at Road America. Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fitipaldi, and Jacque Villeneuve's first win.

Fun to watch. Brought back memories, especially how dorky Paul Tracy always looked. He looked like someone who was working for Microsoft instead of race driver.

When I went to do some research on Hockenheim a few days ago, I could scarcely recognize the track as being the same one I remember. I read that Tilke had redesigned the track by cutting out all the super-long straights. I then came across what I believe ultimately characterizes Hockenheim’s sad fall perfectly.

He drives an awful car and his team mate seems to get more out of it - I just get the feeling Piquet might be a bit like Liuzzi where we all think he's crap in F1 and then he'll do something else and look good...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/06/2009 at 08:36

    Guys,

I know who Nick Wirth is, but who the heck are Manor F1?

  • Alison25/06/2009 at 08:50

But his teammate is Alonso! I think that if you were judging on pure driver skill there are a lot of people that'd tell you Alonso's the best driver on the grid.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/06/2009 at 08:51

Alonso is the best all round driver on the grid. Only one team mate has looked good next to him...

Right, and Piquet has never driven with anyone else. He's managed to crash a lot less this season! I just think people have it in their head that he's pants and look at everything he does with that already in their head.

  • F1Wolf25/06/2009 at 09:02

I know who Nick Wirth is, but who the heck are Manor F1?

Company Name: Manor Grand Prix Racing

    Team Name: Manor F1 Team

    Country: United Kingdom

    Team Principal: John Alfred Booth

The Manor name came into racing in 1990 when former single-seater champion John Booth decided to establish his own team. Since that time, Manor’s record of success includes some 171 Race Wins and 19 Championship Titles in championships such as Formula Renault and Formula 3 Euroseries.

Manor is based in the UK across two sites, one in Sheffield and the other in Bicester. Its technical innovation is characterised by the fact that the race cars are designed, tested and refined entirely in the digital domain using the processes originally developed by Wirth Research Limited (WRL).

WRL is an engineering company, founded by Nick Wirth in 2003, which specialises in research, development and manufacturing in the high technology sector. WRL’s designs were successful in winning both the 2004 and 2005 lndy Racing League championships and it has recently produced race winning designs for Honda competing in the American Le Mans Series.

Wirth, who is the Technical Director of Manor Grand Prix Racing, started his career as an Aerodynamicist for the March F1 racing team. He was responsible for aerodynamic concepts as well as scheming and design of wind tunnel model components for the 1988 and 1989 Leyton House March F1 cars.

From 1993 to 1995, Wirth was Founder/Owner/Technical Director of the Simtek F1 team, which started in the 1994 F1 championship. Simtek Research provided the team with all of the engineering and design of the cars. Wirth went on to become Chief Designer for the Benetton F1 team from 1996 to 1999.

As part of its application to compete in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, Manor has agreed an engine supply deal with Cosworth.

Alonso is the best all round driver on the grid. Only one team mate has looked good next to him...

that team mate was Hamilton right ? Piquet and Hamilton were fighting it out for the GP2 title. The when they moved to F1 they both started as Alonso's team mates. Hamilton matched Alonso more less from race one, Piquet is yet to qualify better than Alonso ...

  • F1Wolf25/06/2009 at 09:08

Still would have picked Prodrive and/or Lola instead!

I wonder if the fact that Prodrive were given F1 spot before and failed to show up had something to do with the FIA decision this time

Indeed. Piquet was considered a good driver until he started in F1 - which makes me wonder why he has done so 'poorly'?

  • Alison25/06/2009 at 09:09

I'm not trying to say he's as good as Hamilton or Alonso. But neither is the rest of the grid....

Neither am I. It's just there is something funny about a driver that does well in the lower formulae and then is poor in F1?

  • F1Wolf25/06/2009 at 09:11

I know who Nick Wirth is, but who the heck are Manor F1?

They're a pretty accomplished bunch. According to Wikipedia, they won the following titles:

2006 Formula Renault 2.0 UK Winter Series (Mailleux)

2005 Macau F3 Grand Prix (Di Grassi)

2005 Formula Renault 2.0 UK (Jarvis)

    2004 Bahrain Super Prix (Hamilton)

2003 Formula Renault 2.0 UK (Hamilton)

    2000 British F3 (Pizzonia)

2000 Formula Renault 2.0 UK (Räikkönen)

    1999 British F3 (Hynes)

1999 Masters of Formula 3 (Hynes)

so Nelson says “Next year with 13 teams and 26 cars would be really amazing!”

He does realise he won’t be in one, doesn’t he?

If Alonso goes off to Ferrari, I think Renault will keep him alongside Grosjean.

If Alonso stays at Renault, Grosjean will take his seat. But if he has strong sponsorship behind him, he might just be a sleeper pick for Campos...

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 09:32

A big caution needs to be made when even comparing team mates let alone drivers across teams. I know we all tend to think of PK, Kovy and SeaBass as weak links in the team (some will even say this of Rubens). Anyone who watched SeaBass at Le Mans knows he is a good driver, but somehow he has not turned that magic on in an F1 car. PK was good in GP2 and A1GP but appears rubbish in F1. As stated in the comments, PK had a mediocre car and his team mate was Fernando (who in terms popular view is the best driver on the grid). Similarly with Kovy, is he really as weak as the results suggest? The car has to be competitive and there has to be synergy between the car and driver. Last year Button seemed to be slower than Rubens, look at this year, a competitive car that suits his style! Last year both Jenson and Nick, the two smoothest drivers on the grid suffered since they could not get heat in their tyres so had poor seasons respectively. Listen to Joe and he is not sure that DeSeb is really any faster than Vitantonio, I happen to agree, but luck, equipment and opportunity has fallen his way at a very tender age.

It might be fun to make a quiz so each person can select the perfect brace of drivers for each team next year and get a sidepodcast community consensus.

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 09:34

My driver preferences at Timo, Nick and Jenson, so last year they would have been underdogs. I think I am the only one on Sidepodcast who thinks Massa is better than Kimi!

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 09:39

Kimi at his best is better than Massa at his best, but with Massa, I feel he tries each time and when things go wrong he puts a fairly brave face (Singapore?). That is why I say he is better overall than Kimi.

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 09:44

Joe Saward looking at The Morning After.

I rate Kimi as better than Massa because I recall him being much more of a fighter from the back/middle than Massa, and it bugs me that Massa needs so much encouragement to be confident.

Using the Massa in Singapore example won't work here. He was nowhere after the botched pitstop. No comeback, no heroics, nothing. Instead we saw some errors (running wide at the last turn, spinning into the soft stuff at the tunnel which triggered Sutil's shunt).

But the best example that would fit your statement would be after he lost the championship to Lewis at the last corner in Brazil.

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 09:48

It depends on your terms of reference - I think I am correct in saying since Kimi and Massa have been team mates Massa has scored more points and wins (so in hard currency he is better). I think Felipe is in the words of Alison a sweetie and is very popular team mate among the drivers.

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 09:51

Kimi race at Singapore was no better and with less excuse - was not a track where heroics are possible since you could not overtake.

This weekend Massa drove really well considering grid position and the circuit.

When I think of Kimi I think of 2005 where he did things like win from 17th and get on the podium after starting 12th or 13th. I think I forget 4 years have passed since then. They've gone pretty fast.

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 10:12

Very fast indeed - it seems like Michael Schumacher's been gone forever, but this is only the 3rd Michael-less season we've had.

and is it one time price or do they charge per race as someone suggested might be the case ?

    either.

you can pay, i think £20 for the app and all the races. you can buy it one race at a time (for race/qually) or one weekend at a time (for all sessions inc. fp1,2,3).

i'll detail every possible combination, prices etc later this week.

I think it's about how they win it more than who wins it. :D If a Button or a Vettel win makes for an exciting finish, why not?

The winner should also be the most deserving driver/team combination with some excitement. Even though I have my favourites, if a driver has driven brilliantly like Lewham at last years British GP then actually that is great with me.

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 12:28

How are we all doing today?

I wonder if this is a sign Ross wants to bring more of his own people in?

    Hi Christine and Me,

Just want to say a huge thank you for asking my question on 'aside with Joe'.

    Thanks

I wonder if this is a sign Ross wants to bring more of his own people in?

He only ever had one chief designer - Rory Byrne.

Hmmm... Could he be en route to joining Ross again? Hmmm...

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 12:56

I first thought... he designed this great car... he must be off to get more money... but look at the 08 car... I don't think his previous efforts have been particularly Stella either?

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 12:57

Brawn seem to have lost there chief designer…

Big question is - will BMW rehire Zander? They lost him at around the time BMW took over Sauber. After designing what will probably be a title-winning BGP001, BMW sorely need his knowledge to right the wrongs of their car at present.

  • Flibster25/06/2009 at 12:58

    I can't stop laughing...

My Dad has had a test drive in Evora. Unfortunately for him, the first half of the test drive was done by a professional with him in the passenger seat, and then he took the wheel.

Unfortunately for my Dad, the professional was Martin Donnelly :D

I'm not saying what speeds were reached on the back roads of Norfolk... ;)

How much of it is Zander and how much of it is Brawn?

Whoever decides to hire him will surely find out.

    G'afternoon all. How you all?

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 15:32

I am not sure when it appeared today but PlanetF1 is reporting that

"'Max to step aside with immediate effect'"

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 15:34

"'Max to step aside with immediate effect'"

    That would make sense.

Will wait for Schmota news though

    G'afternoon all. How you all?

I have a new keyboard.. it has made me very lazy

  • Christine25/06/2009 at 15:35

    Does that mean FOTA?

    Cos there is news: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76515

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 15:35

    I have also noted that...

Joerg Zander, Brawn GP's deputy technical director, has left the team.

I would like to know the inside story here as he is credited with a lot of the success of the Brawn GP design.

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 15:37

    Cos there is news: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76515

Oh thanks, i spend all afternoon looking at their website for a statement and they go and hold a press conference instead!

    Cos there is news: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76515

I liked what Christian had to say about this (concern for the employees). No question it has worked to the best overall interests of the sport.

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 15:39

Is he, most of what i have read credits brawns ability to motivate and manage people, and got the team to produce results ike they never had before.

I didnt know about the wind tunnel though

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 15:40

I mean, I say it's news, it's just waffle really.

    mmm waffles.....

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 15:41

Is he, most of what i have read credits brawns ability to motivate and manage people, and got the team to produce results ike they never had before.

Brawn is the motivator and strategist, but does not get involved with the design as such, each car has a "philosophy" of design so it is adaptable to as many track as possible.

I like how Flavio has muscled in on ethe commercial rights issue....

"Renault boss Flavio Briatore is to work closely with Formula 1's commercial rights holders to help shape the sport's future, as part of the breakthrough deal agreed between the FIA and the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA)."

  • Journeyer25/06/2009 at 15:56

I like how Flavio has muscled in on the commercial rights issue....

Wasn't he the head of FOTA's commercial committee ever since Day 1? It's stuff like these that make people suspect he'll take Bernie's role if and when he needs a successor.

That's the problem with their whole news/sport site, they don't index *anything*. Usually I just resort to searching through the rss feed for things - and I swear there are videos on there that never appeared anywhere else on the site.

    Tilke and modern H&S requirements {Comment #147}

The irony is that part of the reason for the modification was to increase seating by 30,000 people (grandstands couldn't be put by the straights in the forest, but they could easily be placed in the complex replacing them).

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/06/2009 at 18:25

    I do like that he twitpics from the parade :D {Comment #223}

Oh, so that's where the pictures he was taking ended up! The interviewer on board thought it was unusual that a driver would be taking photos of the crowd, but it says something about the magic of Silverstone that of all places Nelson could have done it at, he's chosen to do it there.

  • Christine25/06/2009 at 18:28

I tell you what, I make a fuss about some of the driver names we have to pronounce but I am starting to wonder if a tennis podcast is such a good idea!!

i know Microsoft have never had a really solid operating system but in comparison with their other releases, XP seemed fine.

nt4 was pretty solid. it didn't do very much though.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 19:00

I dunno what the general consensus is on here but I personally though XP did everything right (for Microsoft's standards) Then Vista came along and boom...

XP is night and day better than Vista. I have never had to re-install an operating system ever but I have had to twice with Vista.

My experience is that XP was the best OS Microsoft released. Having said that it is ancient but fairly stable. Why not try LinuxMint - awesome as it comes with Open Office, Gimp, CD/DVD burner and virtual all codec and flash/shockwave plugins and a variety of media players etc. It is the only OS (including OSX) that quite literally works "out of the box". Make a Live CD or flash stick and boot with it to test drive. Also playing with compiz you get a seriously cool desktop.

Vista sucks - more than 75% of installations have been converted back and I think I read Microsoft has extended this until 2011.

Not with LinuxMint, I am being very serious, unless you have some really strange architecture - it will install out of the box with no fiddling. Even installing new software is really easy. From ease of use it is better than Windows or even OSX. Mint makes Linux the most human friendly OS around. My new teaching and research Lab here at our uni will be 100% Linux.

  • Pat W25/06/2009 at 19:22

I may be reinstalling after Tuesday. Potentially getting a mobo/processor upgrade off a mate who doesn't need his any more (only a minor upgrade but it'll keep me going for 12-18 mths). You may yet tempt me to dual-boot.

  • Rich25/06/2009 at 19:23

But why bother with a change... what cant XP do?

No viruses to worry about, more secure updating of software, and to re-install it takes a few minute (15 at most) plus iof you have not experience multiple desktops (especially useful on netbooks) plus programmes just work faster. I manage about 100 PCs (mixed Windows and OSX) in our Dept - using OSX or Linux will cut down time of each work station by an order of magnitude.

Got to the LinuxMint and make a Live CD - ensure your bios is set to boot from CD. It will be slow cos it running from the CD. I actually converted my staff using USB bootup which is fairly quick.

It's interesting reading the comments from earlier about Piquet and Nakajima.

It is possible Piquet is better than he has looked so far in F1. We know the team is wrapped round his team mate and that Alonso has a very odd driving style. So it may be that Piquet has not had the chance to show what he is capable of.

I have to say however I was always a bit suspicious of how good he really was. Every time he drove for a team that his father didn't own his results dipped severely. Nelson senior is not above pulling a few strokes. In the Brazilian(maybe South American) F3 championship there was a strict testing limit so Piquet senior had some mudguards fitted to the F3 car and drcided that meant it wasn't an F3 car any more so they could test as much as they liked.

I think his next move will dictate how his career pans out. He may have run Hamilton close in the GP2 championship but there is nothing to suggest he is that standard of driver.

Williams do not have to have Nakajima. They have o pick one driver from the Toyota driver development program which essentially means Nakajima or Kobayashi Komui.

Linux isn't worth bothering with on the desktop at the moment unless you do a lot of work in the environment *eg server admin, coding etc...*.

Before Ubuntu that was probably true - its change now and LinuxMint has changed things even more. I saw a review of Windows 7 vs LinuxMint 7 - basically MS got blown out of the water with incompatibility issues.

Jörg Zander (born February 15, 1964 in Ratingen) is a German Formula One car chief designer.

Zander graduated from Cologne University in 1990 before joining Toyota. After a brief period working in Touring Cars he returned to Toyota to work on the Formula One project and in 2003 moved to the BAR Formula One team.

In September 2005, Zander was recruited by the Williams team to replace outgoing Chief Designer Gavin Fisher who was sacked earlier in the year as a result of the team's poor performances. Zander worked alongside Chief Aerodynamicist Loïc Bigois, under the supervision of Technical Director Sam Michael.

In March 2006, Zander resigned from the Williams team due to personal reasons, and immediately joined the BMW Sauber team as Chief Designer, accountable to Technical Director Willy Rampf.

In July 2007, it was announced he had agreed to join the Honda Racing F1. Zander was immediately suspended and then joined Honda.[1] Zander continued in his role with the Brawn GP team, following the management buy-out in March 2009 of the Honda F1 operation, but left the team on 19 June 2009.[2]

But it'll just be like Single Tyre races, they'll just get a bit processional. Theres a distinct lack of overtaking in F1 and when it does happen its because heavier cars and lighter cars are next to each other.

Of course they still need fuel rigs, just not high capacity ones that as you say are expensive beasts (capital costs, service and transport)

argh. OK. I'm sorry if I'm rubbish. Also, If I manage to destroy the wiki in my attempt to edit the page

Wiki looks OK to me and your name is on the list so you must have done it right. Lots of people worry about not being funny enough or knowledgable enough but the shows are just a bit of fun and even the most nervous people (Lou) really enjoy them. Ispent weeks talking Lou into doing one and she eventually hosted a show.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 20:21

Cosworth need 3 teams to make it pay... But haven't they all got deposits?

The price teams pay Cosworth epends on how many teams use them. So if only one or two teams use them the price goes up

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast25/06/2009 at 20:22

Ispent weeks talking Lou into doing one and she eventually hosted a show.

Course if you can't think of anything to say, just say little. You don't have to be funny. Be knowledgeable, thats what gets you points.

And by complimenting Franck of course.

Sounds like a bit of a risk if they other teams are doing them for £6million or whatever the fee is.

Cosworth might get done over twice in one season by F1

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 20:24

Toyota makes a lot of sense... however I don't see how that is happening. They already have Williams but I would love for USF1 have a Toyota that has been racing instead of a Cosworth which plans have only been recently dusted off.

Also, a future question for an Aside with Joe... who is the Mole on Grand Prix dot com? He has some interesting rumors about other Americans wanting to get into F1. LINK: http://www.grandprix.com/mole/mole21554.html

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 20:38

As part of the Toyota engine deal Williams must run a driver from the Toyota young driver program. As far as I know only two drivers in the program qualify for a super license - Nakajima and Kobayashi Komui. Ofthe two Nakajima is the best option.

Nakajima's younger brother Daisuke is doing British F3 this year so we may see him in two or three years as he is rumoured to be better than Kazuki.

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 20:42

Okay, but this wasn't always the case was it? Pre 2007 (???) they didn't have a driver from the programme and could still have the engines?

Why do they put up with it, I mean Nakajima kinda sucks.....

  • Nick25/06/2009 at 20:46

Why do they put up with it, I mean Nakajima kinda sucks.....

He's not that bad, and he is getting better. Its also good for sponsors like Phillips and RBS that want a presence in Japan

Not to mention i guess all his engines are paid for by Toyota and the other one will likely be subsidised.

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 20:46

Why do they put up with it, I mean Nakajima kinda sucks.....

Because the engine price is suitably reduced

If FOTA want to engage with fans, they should at least take a look at their own website - Ron Dennis is still in the picture on the front page.

Toyota, BMW, and Mazda sponsor a lot of racing stuff over here. Toyota sponsors a few IRL races and both BMW and Mazda sponsors racing clubs and amature and professional series.

From their standpoint and marketing aims, a Toyota or a BMW engine agreement makes sense.

  • James25/06/2009 at 20:47

One of the things that hooks people into this sport is that it has so many levels. Once you grasp the racing there is the technial stuff, the politics and the business. And of course all are interwoven and what is said in public rarely reflects reality. It takes a very long time to get close to understanding it.

Everyone feels like what happend in F1 can;t be real from time to time.

It was, then Max ruined it.

if there is something i have learnt while watching f1 and following the politics it's that things are rarely solved that quickly :P i was expecting more, tbh i'm rather enjoying the politics again :D

oh and the ringing in my ears was gone this morning when i woke up, phew :)

I am hopeless at the modern stuff too, Can't remember who won what when where. Can't even remember who's pn first

I can't even remember what's happened in my own life.... You were talking about races at the end of last season and I was swearing blind that I'd had to get up at like 4am to watch them when no. Normal afternoon races!

Honestly though, I've only been following this freak show, sorry I mean sport, for a couple of months properly. My knowledge = zero.

Max: We will announce the entry list tommorrow.

Fota: We are going ahead with the breakaway, if the FIA choose to accept our conditions, we will re-evaluate.

    Max: We will sue.

    Fota: Same as before.

Max: these loons will come around once we sue them

    Fota: Same as before.

Max: I will stand for election again

Fota: We will announce details of the series later this week

    Max: I surrender unconditionally.

Fota: We win! and will stay in F1

Max: Then again I might not.

You get points for saying things like that?? I can certainly do that..... The actual knowing of things is what I struggle with!

You should listen to some of the podpanels. There are no correct answers. It's a bit like QI. You have to say something that appeals to the person in charge of the pinger. It is also best not to worry to much about the question that was asked. If you have an answer that can be tortured into being remotely relevant you should use it.

All previous sidepodpanels can be found at http://www.sidepodcast.com/category/sidepodpanel/ Consider it homework

when you're doing the smoke and lights for a rock concert back stage + running around like a headless chicken finding the bands and getting them on stage and don't have enough time to get in special headsets you have to do your best. luckily i was behind the speakers, could have been much worse if i was in front of them

Pre-2007, Williams had Cosworth engines. For the first part of 2007, none of Toyota's drivers were eligible for a Superlicence (Kazuki became eligible mid-2007).

Them Komodo dragons occur on several Indonesian islands, some inhabited others not. They are known to prey on humans so local inhabitants live in huts built on stilts.

  • Alison25/06/2009 at 22:15

I find it interesting that sky are reporting he is dead, when cnn have gone no further than hospitalised.

I'm pretty sure it's close to confirmed (even if unofficial) that he's been taken to hospital but it's hard to confirm that he's dead unless someone announces it. Even if he wasn't breathing when he was taken to hospital, no-one knows what's happened once he's got there.... Tbh though he's probably dead or (more) brain damaged.

    Text from Aut… AUTOSPORT: “Max Mosely says he may yet stand again because he believes FOTA has misled the media.” {Comment #709}

Silly Max! Doesn't he understand that in making that statement, he's implicitly admitting misleading everybody?

Besides, I see nothing misleading in FOTA's description of events (with the exception of the last sentence - I never saw any side promoting the £20-£30m budgets a "Nineties budget" implies). Everything else written is true and nearly all of it matches the FIA version of events (with a few parts the FIA has not officially commented upon in a reliable fashion).

If being truthful is enough to break the agreement, the agreement was never valid.

The really silly bit is that Max, having made the U-turn in 24 hours flat, has given FOTA an easy way out - by re-starting the breakaway they'd so recently laid aside. IT may be delayed by a couple of weeks but that's all. Had Max waited until mid-August for this bombshell, he could have destroyed the breakaway.

That's a good point, but these islands are really rather isolated (literally only found beginning of last century, but usually a large animal on a small island falls prey to human predation. I think the first scientific description was only about 1912.

Just as well for the dragons they were not found 50 or 60 years earlier

Surely putting Uri Geller in front of a camera at any time is insensitive. The man will never miss an opportunity to big himself up. I bet he is saying he felt something at the time and he knew it was bad.

  • Andy Taylor25/06/2009 at 23:04

If they have received the tickets.. all they can do is get a refund from the venue. :D

The sellers £342.75 *after paypal and ebay fees* will be safe.

But I thought re-selling of such tickets was not allowed? I'd expect them to lose the lot, which is a bit harsh, even if they are MJ fans.

  • Alison25/06/2009 at 23:15

News channels always do this. They get a sniff of something and they spend hours showing blurry film footage taken from a helicopter or sent from someone's mobile phone and interview randomers who have no idea what's going on.

Meanwhile, noone cares about Iran anymore... I was listening to someone earlier talking about how the digital news age meant people wouldn't forget the problems so easily. I think that's been disproved....

Things have to be actually happening now; with 24 hours to dissect a story from every angle, after 2 to 3 days there simply isn't anything left that hasn't been said, so the story gets dropped.

  • Flibster25/06/2009 at 23:17

I reckon that's the end of the coverage. It's been relegated to a tiny box on the BBC website. Things rarely move back up the website once they've slipped. Unless someone is assassinated or something I reckon it's over for them!

Interesting that the BBC are reporting that MJ is dead but adding "reports say" to the summary.

    Does anyone know where I’d be able to find an entry list for the 1987 formula ford festival? {Comment #966}

It's a long shot, but I'd email/phone someone at BRSCC HQ (they organise the Festival). I'm not sure who would be most appropriate, so I'll just give you the page with all the HQ contacts on.

Email might be better because the individual at the other end can simply type up the list at their convenience.

It is one of the unfortunate things about modern culture that celebrity is over-rated and give too much priority. In the scheme of things whether or not Michael Jackson is dead is of no importance whereas Iran could have a major effect on th world

Talk about a one way conversation. Since I have laryngitis, I would write my answers. However he said he didn't have to time to read. I think he couldn't to be honest.

I was listening and kept on falling asleep. I think he took one of my head noods from falling asleep as an approval or indication to do something. I don't even remember what he was talking about. It was sometime in 2003-ish.

agree to a point however, we have to credit others that despite this 'popular culture phenomena' others also do recognise the significance of other events and once the press reduce their over indulgence on Michael other issues again take precedence...its all about proportion imo.....
