We're in the middle of the week now, and I promise not to mention Wimbledon once. Oops, I just did. Never mind, today is supposed to be the next big thing in the journey to the end of Formula 1, so perhaps I should focus on F1 for a bit:

  • The WMSC are meeting today in Paris with Max Mosley and Luca di Montezemolo going head to head over... well, everything, I guess. Max has already said he will restand for election in October which will come as no surprise to anyone. What other revelations are in store?
  • Shaun was at Silverstone over the weekend in his usual guise, checking tickets at the gate. He's written about some of the famous people he spotted, and get this - Legard has a fan!
  • Dank has found some more excellent Red Bull video, this time a tour of the factory in Milton Keynes. It's always good to get a look behind the scenes of how the cars get made, even if they are fugly.

That'll do it for now. If there is some news coming out of today, I'll have to designate this daily post as a happy place again, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I'll see you in the comments.

Just a quick question for 'me' or Mrs. C, Have you guys picked a slogan?

I don't know if it is a temporary one, or if Mr C is trying to subliminally get us to like this one, but I have seen "All for F1, and F1 for All" is starting to creep into all the places where "Your weekly F1 podcast" used to be.

    I have 2 plans...

*Save up over the summer and get one before I go back to University (of course, thats if I pass everything) but then it's more saving up for the insurance moreso than the car...

*Wait until I turn 21 on New Years Eve as the insurance will drop a lot more than it is at the moment. Downside is waiting another few months!!

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 07:54

    Why? What is it?

Today at work, inspired by the earlier post, I listened to all 93 Backstreet Boy songs I have on my mp3 player.

I enjoyed every second of it.

And now I am home from work and considering watching one of the two Backstreet DVDs I own.

    I am that cool.

    I am that cool.

I know you were worried about this but they provided the answer in one of their songs...

    Backstreet's back? Alright!

The man has a point - is F1 too complicated for the average punter now?

Clearly I'm more than just a casual fan, I could answer all the questions he asked :D

I like how he said legard had a nice voice.

In the same way rubbing a file on your back alongside sandpaper and gravel is relaxing.

  • James24/06/2009 at 08:17

So could I - but a heck of a lot of people can't!

But all that can be said is that the rules say they have to (regarding tyres). I would have thought fuel loads was obvious you can go faster the lighter your car is. Sutill started from the pitlane because of a problem which was mentioned by Legard. And KERS is a magic button! :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 08:18

I like how he said legard had a nice voice.

He does have a nice voice - just that his intonation is all wrong.

I just realised I can do a good Tiff Needell impression. I may not like the man, but I think I have an affinity with him ;)

I would go nuts if I had KERS explained to me every race. The questions they answer on 5Live during the practices are enough to make me want to never listen again.

Perhaps they don't need to though? I quite like that F1 has so many levels. You can watch some fugly cars going round a track, or if you want to dig a little deeper, there is a LOT more to find out.

Exactly, there is only so much the BBC can fit in particularly with all the politics going on. They take the time to explain terms like oversteer and understeer. I did notice though Lynam didn't mention there bit explaining pit stops.

  • Jeremy24/06/2009 at 08:21

    Because it's better than nothing!

The thing is, it's true of all sports. There is always something you can learn.

I consider myself a casual fan of tennis. I don't know the difference between the surfaces, I still can't get my head round how the tie break scoring works, and I don't understand the world rankings.

But I still watch sometimes, and I still enjoy it. Same with F1 for the casual fans, I would imagine.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 08:26

I think I experienced this with 20/20 Cricket last Friday too. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people I would affectionately call 'raving bores' that just think F1 is cars going round in circles because they don't understand it. I can't seem them being entertained by Sunday's race TBH.

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 08:27

Okay, but then they aren't going to be interested in it. The same way I'm not interested in rugby or cricket. You can't make people find something interesting.

Very true. I'm not much of a fan for cricket. But my mate who I watched it with (Who's mad keen) explained it a little bit and I think I enjoyed it more as a result. Surely a little understanding would have helped in the F1 race too?

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 08:31

Naturally. I don't think you can rely on the commentators for that though. They are there to talk about what they can see, not guiding new people through the process.

I'd say that watching with someone who does know is a much better way, and it seems more and more that visiting online communities is a great way to get help too.

  • Jeremy24/06/2009 at 08:32

To enjoy anything, you must be open minded to enjoying it. You have to give it a chance.

The great thing about tie breaks is they don't use them in the final set of a match at three of the Slams, but they do at the US Open. If they can't even use the same rules all season, what hope do we have :D

One is the one I always get - the Chicken Monaco. Has got mozarella, seasoned chicken, fresh tomato, onion, mushroom on tomato sauce.

Second choice is the Chicken Capri which is just new on the menu and has chicken breast and seasoned chicken, baby spinach, grape tomatoes, smoked bacon, fresh garlic on alfredo sauce. Clearly this sounds amazing but I am a creature of habit.

in NZ they are not allowed to jackpot above $30,000,000 by law so once it gets that high someone wins even if they don't have all the numbers. Makes the odds a little bit better.

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 09:39

quite often. Normal Lotto doesn't get that high but the Big super-jackpotty-costs-way-more-to-play-and-is-harder-to-win seems to get that high quite regularly.

Concerning that exam, apparently i made it far too complex with a file system when all was wanted was a text file output. So ill happily admit its an error on my part, and i can redo it no problem. :)

Just a quick question for 'me' or Mrs. C, Have you guys picked a slogan?

I don't know if it is a temporary one, or if Mr C is trying to subliminally get us to like this one, but I have seen "All for F1, and F1 for All" is starting to creep into all the places where "Your weekly F1 podcast" used to be.

it's a temporary thing. the redesign keeps getting pushed back, so that subtitle is there as a stop gap.

i'm assuming we'll never settle on one slogan, and it'll be every changing to reflect our moods?

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 10:17

avast! although since you change the name of the podcast it puts it in a different catagory in my ipod, thanks for that.

Pretty good Bruno Mantovani vid for Silverstone.

my delivery boy today seemed angry i didn't have a pen to sign the credit card receipt, he had to go back to his car to get one.

I get very mad with Dominoes NZ policy on hiring of pizza staff - I have to be very careful what I say here, but let me put it this way: I had to give up on deliveries because no matter where I lived, they couldn't find my house. SO I started ordering in and I had to give my name as 'Bob' so they understood me!

I need to focus on a lotus, Cars with 5.0, 7.3 litre engines just aren't practical in a country full of global warming people, and there crazy petrol taxes

    Bah humbug. ;)

    Why are RX-8's so cheap?

Drink fuel, regular oil top ups, engine that is witchcraft. ;) It's unusual, and as such, not popular.

    Rotary engine's not last long?

The Old RX-7 Turbo lumps required rebuilds at around 60k - current renesis model engines are good for over 200k

How many cars does that man have?

3 - 1 that drives, 2 that don't. Plus an additional one on order.

Well, as he washed an engine in the bath whilst his gf was away, I'd say a few! :D

    Shhhhh. ;)

I don't think it was even his engine. I think it was his mate's.

Errr. The block was mine. Ferrari Dino 2.4 V6

The other was the cylinder heads from an Essex engined Capri that I was rebuilding for a mate. He has since ditched that engine and the entire drivetrain and stuck a Escort Cosworth drivetrain in it - shame - it was immaculate. :(

You would think that an engine that won Le Mans should be pretty reliable on the road right? Else, let me never say again that "Racing Improves The Breed"!

    Hey everyone, Good Morning!!

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 10:50

No way - he looks too old!

That's what the article says... I do remember a story about the other team principals not thinking too much of him when he came in 2005. After all, he was only 31 then! Then he earned their respect when he managed to nab Adrian Newey from McLaren.

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 10:52

You would think that an engine that won Le Mans should be pretty reliable on the road right? Else, let me never say again that "Racing Improves The Breed"!

    Aaah the 787

That engine bared only a little resemblance to the road engine. Road engine has 2 rotors, race car has 4..

Also had variable inlets, an extra sparkbplug per chamber, - 700bhp from 2.6litres. Pretty close to the current F1 engines.

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 11:01

Looks like we won't be seeing Hockenheim back on the calendar anytime soon, ir's lost funding from the German government

Never ever been a fan of the small circuit anyways,.

Just as I suspected. Richard Porter from Sniff Petrol doesn't think that racing improves technology - he thinks that if a team didn't go racing they would spend the money on R&D instead and develop the same stuff...

What's the point of racing an engine to prove it works when it has nothing to do with the roadcar variant?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 11:03

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:04

Never ever been a fan of the small circuit anyways,.

It produced pretty good racing - but yeah, it's not irreplaceable.

Nelsinho Piquet must be thinking - "I get a podium there, then the race gets dropped from the calendar?!"

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 11:05

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 11:05

You learn what doesn't work. Racing is marketing and R&D at the same time.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:35

Heh. :P Nah, I don't think so - Max would only back out if he knew the numbers were against him. Otherwise, he would've run anyway, whatever FOTA said.

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 11:36

    Meaning "now" surely?

It has to be, thats very confusing otherwise :D

So, I am definitely missing something. How does getting rid of Max mean the teams are now okay with the new regulations?

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:38

Even if he loses his McLaren seat, I like his chances of still getting a seat - maybe at Manor?

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:39

So, I am definitely missing something. How does getting rid of Max mean the teams are now okay with the new regulations?

It said there was a deal of some sort. Max out was only part of it. It remains to be seen what the other parts of the deal are...

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 11:39

So, I am definitely missing something. How does getting rid of Max mean the teams are now okay with the new regulations?

    Unlikely.

I think it's probably going to be closer to what we have this year.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:39

Because it was only ever about Max in the first place?

It wasn't ONLY about Max, but it was MOSTLY about Max.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 11:39

Heh. :P Nah, I don't think so - Max would only back out if he knew the numbers were against him. Otherwise, he would've run anyway, whatever FOTA said.

I don't believe a word of it. Max will just keep all the power, and tell the teams what they like until November then it will be back to how it is now, an we will probably do this whole thing again in 18-24 months time.

The only thing I really wonder is if Bernie has been forced to cough up more cash. if he has cvc could be rocking...

I think it's more than that. Max leaving must be ONE of the reasons

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 11:39

Bye Heikki, I'll miss you *sob*

I'm sure he'll be at Le Mans next year...

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:39

I think it's probably going to be closer to what we have this year.

Perhaps with new cost-cutting measures? And maybe they'll implement Sir Frank's idea of getting current teams to mentor the new ones?

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 11:39

I think it's probably going to be closer to what we have this year.

Then how will the new teams manage?

Then how will the new teams manage?

See Force India and Toro Rosso

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 11:40

Because it was only ever about Max in the first place?

If that is true, and these past few months have only been about that, I am even more mad at the sport than I ever have been.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:40

I don't believe a word of it. Max will just keep all the power, and tell the teams what they like until November then it will be back to how it is now, an we will probably do this whole thing again in 18-24 months time.

Oh please no. Keep Heiiki !

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 11:53

    I'm not sure you would....

belive me, the channel which has state of origin went bust yesterday and stopped broadcasting.

they put some bigpond stream on for uk people, then geolocked the uk out of it.

    Good old telstra.

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 11:53

i still want to hear it from fota though.

Same here, lets see what they say!

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 11:53

    more from the bbc:

"There will be one F1 championship (but) but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early '90s within two years."

Why the (but)? BBC are in such a rush to be FIRST! with this news.

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 11:54

belive me, the channel which has state of origin went bust yesterday and stopped broadcasting.

It is a less than inspiring game.

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 11:54

Can you say - Nico Rosberg - McLaren Mercedes driver?

Timo I would accept. Not-quite-Finn I would not.

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)24/06/2009 at 11:54

Bye Heikki, I’ll miss you *sob*

Bless him, he really hasn't done well at Mclarenhas he?!

    Bring in Glock :-)

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 11:54

    Oh dear, silly Tipsarevic..

One has dodgy sunglasses, one has a dodgy headband. This is the oddest game of tennis ever!

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 11:55

Its 18-14 and Queensland are on the verge of history!

    Hehe :)

Tipsarevic has made some stupid mistakes. Plus smashing a tennis ball over the court in frustration isn't the smartest thing to do, surely....

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 11:56

I like Fish. Because his name is Fish. Heh.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 11:56

Timo I would accept. Not-quite-Finn I would not.

But didn't Timo already say he was staying at Toyota for 2010? And given that Jarno isn't getting any younger, that might be the right thing to do.

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 11:57

    The Beeb journalist says:

"It was him that had come up with the idea that next season all teams would have a budget cap of about £40m, but there has clearly been a trade-off as he has also agreed to do what he says was always the plan - stand down as president of the FIA this October."

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 11:57

But didn't Timo already say he was staying at Toyota for 2010? And given that Jarno isn't getting any younger, that might be the right thing to do.

not a clue, I have avoided any silly season talk this year. And last year too, since Heikki got announced for 09 so early :D

    From Autosport...

AUTOSPORT understands that as part of the agreement the teams must call off the breakaway series and sign up to a new Concorde Agreement until 2012.

"There will be no split," said Mosley. "We have agreed to a reduction of costs. There will be one F1 championship but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early 1990s within two years."

The FIA is expected to announce the official entry list for the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship later this afternoon.

    Boo.

But if the FW31 continues improving, will he want to?

He might, sure - the upside of staying at Williams in a cost-reduced era is bigger than it is now. But... will he tempted by offers from the bigger teams (probably McLaren, possibly BMW, possibly Toyota)?

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 12:51

what would Nico bring besides being German and topping each FP2

He might, sure - the upside of staying at Williams in a cost-reduced era is bigger than it is now. But... will he tempted by offers from the bigger teams (probably McLaren, possibly BMW, possibly Toyota)?

He wants a car that had the potential to let him win races. So far, those 3 teams don't.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 12:53

They can't - they'd already be committed to 2010. I think the challenge will be to get a candidate FOTA will agree with.

More chance than Williams. I head a rumour from a fool of a friend of mine that dave Richards was thinking of buying the frank's stake in the team team at the weekend, i don't believe him for a second, but i wonder how much longer they really want to carry on. especially as they are loosing their tittle sponsor.

I posted about that, before i think he would be a great fit at brawn.

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 12:57

renault weren't mean to him were they? flav just decided he wanted... ummm.. hokey cokey.

True but he still didn't get a race seat out of it. I think since Toyota let him go, he has really come on strong in terms of talent. He deserves a second shot at F1, regardless of whether I like him or not, which I do of course. :)

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 12:57

Nico is so incredibly underwhelming. Please McLaren, you haven't had a driver I have disliked that much in as long as I have supported you!

Timo is a better candidate - this season he holds the record for the most amount of overtaking. Even more significant he has shown he can drive a car that is heavy with fuel and manage the tyres at the same time.

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 12:59

Admittedly not as mean as Toyota though, who are evil.

and fairly useless. He's better off not there

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 13:00

    agreed.

Wasn't he like topping FP sessions and stuff and then Toyota promised him a race drive which never came true?

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:00

Timo is a better candidate - this season he holds the record for the most amount of overtaking. Even more significant he has shown he can drive a car that is heavy with fuel and manage the tyres at the same time.

And I heart Timo. He would be a good one to vocally support while I secretly actually support Heikki in a team thats not my team.

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 13:01

Timo is a better candidate - this season he holds the record for the most amount of overtaking. Even more significant he has shown he can drive a car that is heavy with fuel and manage the tyres at the same time.

Frank will race to the end - on whatever budget. He's a racer through and through.

Right now, only Brawn and Red Bull have won races this season. Ferrari might win one too. He won't get any offers from Ferrari or RBR. But Brawn may decide not to renew Rubens' contract...

The problem with not renewing Rubens' contract is that Jenson often uses Rubens set up. In this area Rubens is very experienced. I also think he will get closer to matching Jenson for the rest of the season.

  • me24/06/2009 at 13:02

So we all like Timo and want him to go to McLaren yet we don't think it's gonna happen? Riiiiiiight......

Nico's hair is far too outrageous for McLaren's clean cut policy. Remember Alonso's McLaren hair? Heheh.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 13:05

He had his chance. Didn't do too well either.

He seems to have got quite a bit better since then. the money got him into f1 before, i think it was way to early.

Perhaps Mclaren will run Karthikien next year to prepare him for a chance in the force india team?

He had his chance. Didn't do too well either.

Ol' One-armed bandit Narain didn't exactly get a fair shot in the Jordan did he?

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:06

If I had a choice between Toyota and Mercedes, I know who I'd pick...

#1 at Toyota, or #2 at McLaren behind Lewis. I think that's how Timo sees it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 13:06

More or less, that's the case...

I'm still for Di Resta, and it's really nothing to do with his name :-)

You're not Steven Roy are you? ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 13:06

I'm still for Di Resta, and it's really nothing to do with his name :-)

Force India or Manor come to mind for him.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 13:07

Nico's hair is far too outrageous for McLaren's clean cut policy. Remember Alonso's McLaren hair? Heheh.

Nuvo Mclaren is different though, look what happened to lewis's helmet at the weekend.

And if he had done donuts before ron would probably have kicked the pit gantry onto the grid.

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 13:07

You're not Steven Roy are you? ;)

    ah, great minds....

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:07

The rumour suggests Mercedes themselves WANT Timo.

That is what I have heard - endorsement by Norbert no less!

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:07

I'm still for Di Resta, and it's really nothing to do with his name :-)

That reminds me that I forgot to watch DTM the other day. Ah well, any days a good day when theres no Ralf in it.

  • Kathi24/06/2009 at 13:07

Timo is a better candidate - this season he holds the record for the most amount of overtaking. Even more significant he has shown he can drive a car that is heavy with fuel and manage the tyres at the same time.

But he can't beat Trulli unless it's wet.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:07

Force India or Manor come to mind for him.

I like his chances at Manor - Does Liuzzi still have that deal with FIF1 for a 2010 race seat?

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:08

Nuvo Mclaren is different though, look what happened to lewis's helmet at the weekend.

True. I had forgotten about NEO McLaren :D

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:08

#1 at Toyota, or #2 at McLaren behind Lewis. I think that's how Timo sees it.

Why do you think Toyota will dump Jarno? He is pretty fast and scoring!

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 13:08

And if he had done donuts before ron would probably have kicked the pit gantry onto the grid.

Did Lewis get fined for that by the way?

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:09

I've never watched it, I thought I'd give it a chance :D Left over Mika love I think. Even though hes not there anymore :(

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:09

    Nope :D

    Now that is news.

Just a slap on the wrist reprimand, right?

    not last weekend!

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:11

But he can't beat Trulli unless it's wet.

Yes but this was Timo for McLaren where Mercedes want a German driver (not surprisingly). Trulli is a very under-estimated driver and yes he is doing better at the moment than Timo - but next year it could change with no refueling!

  • me24/06/2009 at 13:12

Why do Mercedes suddenly want a German driver when they never seemed to have cared since the partnership began?

  • Mattw24/06/2009 at 13:13

And if he had done donuts before ron would probably have kicked the pit gantry onto the grid.

You think so? I seem to remember Mika doing donuts in the past with no pit gantry kicking from uncle ron.

Head of the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). Prince Albert's rep at the FIA. ;)

It is rumoured that Toyota won't be renewing Trulli's contract after this season ends.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:14

Why do Mercedes suddenly want a German driver when they never seemed to have cared since the partnership began?

But they did - they wanted Michael Schumacher to drive a McLaren in 1996. But Michael had other ideas after talking to Ron...

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:15

    In a word - yes.

  • Kathi24/06/2009 at 13:15

But then the gearbox didn't have to hold for 4 races

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:15

Why do Mercedes suddenly want a German driver when they never seemed to have cared since the partnership began?

Two points - public pressure and there are five German F1 drivers so senior management will be asking such questions. True, in the past Macca have not cared to insist on a German driver but I think Mercedes will take more role in decision making.

  • me24/06/2009 at 13:15

Does that mean Max isn't in charge anymore?

he's still in charge, but presumably he won't be attending races any more?

  • Amy24/06/2009 at 13:16

Theres still 10+ years in between though

  • me24/06/2009 at 13:16

But then the gearbox didn't have to hold for 4 races

true. but that mclaren isn't likely to score a point for the rest of the season. he may as well lunch all the engines too.

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:17

It is rumoured that Toyota won't be renewing Trulli's contract after this season ends.

If true he will be picked up by one of the new teams.

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 13:17

Why do Mercedes suddenly want a German driver when they never seemed to have cared since the partnership began?

McLaren haven't had a German driver since Jochen Mass. Why would it suddenly matter now? And if it really did, have they forgotten Vettel?

  • James24/06/2009 at 13:17

he's still in charge, but presumably he won't be attending races any more?

I imagine that the 2009 season review will have a lot of Max in it compared to previous seasons which will be annoying.

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 13:17

By the sounds of it, they have agreed not to continue the breakaway if Max no longer talks to them and leaves the FIA

if they are continuing negotiations - they haven't agreed to the 2010 regs yet.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:17

Theres still 10+ years in between though

They tried getting him in 96 and 2000 - failed both times because of Ron.

Now that Ron isn't around, I don't think Martin has as much leverage over Mercedes.

  • James24/06/2009 at 13:17

McLaren haven't had a German driver since Jochen Mass. Why would it suddenly matter now? And if it really did, have they forgotten Vettel?

Vettel is contracted to Red Bull next year ;)

  • Kathi24/06/2009 at 13:18

Two points - public pressure and there are five German F1 drivers so senior management will be asking such questions. True, in the past Macca have not cared to insist on a German driver but I think Mercedes will take more role in decision making.

There is no public pressure of having a German driver in a Mercedes car. At least not here in Germany. Mercedes see themselves as a international company. They want somebody like Mika, whom they can use for their marketing.

  • Rich24/06/2009 at 13:18

McLaren haven't had a German driver since Jochen Mass. Why would it suddenly matter now? And if it really did, have they forgotten Vettel?

Would Vettel be interested? He is arguable in the best team at the moment!

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 13:18

if they are continuing negotiations - they haven't agreed to the 2010 regs yet.

with boeri handling f1 negotiations now, you may be right.

but if there's an entry list by this afternoon, surely some rules have to be in place?

A lot of money for a driver who just follows other cars isnt necessarily a good idea.

I suspect he will want to go to a team where he is number 1 and wont have to face comparison with another quick driver.

    hello :)

That said - why no FOTA statement yet? Are they waiting for the entry list to come out? Or are there other problems?

perhaps because LDM was the one to hash out the deal and the other FOTA members don't agree/are annoyed at him/have finally realised LDM was treating the whole thing as a power play and never really cared about the sport?

Also, how much were the teams spending in the early '90s? I find it odd that Max didn't give an actual figure.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 13:47

it was mostly about Max - and I'm sure all the teams will say that. Flav also said something to the extent that they wanted 09 rules in place next year. so they really got what they wanted, it would seem.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 14:04

AUTOSPORT still think Sam Michael is the big story, shouldn't we be discussing that?

  • me24/06/2009 at 14:05

Here's a thought - they said Max leaving wasn't a condition to them rejoining for 2010. Perhaps why there is no statement for Max out - because it shouldn't matter to FOTA as a whole. They're more concerned about the rules and such. And perhaps they're waiting for details on that to be released before they make a statement.

    this is nuts:

"...the rules for 2010 onwards will be the 2009 regulations as well as further regulations agreed prior to 29 April 2009."

well... those regulations included cost caps and a two tier championship?

    also:

"As part of this agreement, the teams will, within two years, reduce the costs of competing in the championship to the level of the early 1990s"

    does that account for inflation?

i don't think FOTA agreed to that? key word here is agreed - must be agreed between FOTA and FIA, right?

"As part of this agreement, the teams will, within two years, reduce the costs of competing in the championship to the level of the early 1990s"

Now that is vagueness defined. I guess the teams were insistent on not putting a specific figure?

Not sure why you seem to think the same story ought to be given the most prominent positioning in two different elements of the same page?

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 14:15

I just can't believe we have gone through all this rubbish for the past few months and nothing has changed.

Well, because FOTA wanted nothing to change - if anything was gonna change, they wanted to have a say in it first. And they got what they wanted.

Could be Renault not wanting to be embarrassed by a customer car. For Brawn to run Mercedes they need a similar concession to this year (for Merc to supply three teams with engines). I think Red Bull might also end up with Merc engines!

  • Christine24/06/2009 at 14:33

The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) will officially call off its plans for a rival championship tomorrow after reaching a breakthrough deal with the FIA.

Following last-ditch talks between FIA president Max Mosley, FOTA chairman Luca di Montezemolo and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, an agreement was reached that commits the teams to the sport until 2012.

FOTA members had been set to press ahead with breakaway plans in the meeting in Bologna tomorrow, but following its victory in getting the FIA and Ecclestone to agree to terms that keeps its eight members in F1, it will now rubber stamp final cost-cutting regulations for 2010 and call off its breakaway instead.

The deal between the FIA and FOTA was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, when the FIA announced that its planned budget cap for 2010 had been scrapped, and instead FOTA-proposed cost-cutting regulations will be introduced.

In a bid to help new teams, technical assistance will be offered to Campos Meta, Manor Grand Prix and Team US F1 by major outfits.

The FIA statement said: "As part of this agreement, the teams will, within two years, reduce the costs of competing in the championship to the level of the early 1990s.

"The manufacturer teams have agreed to assist the new entries for 2010 by providing technical assistance."

As part of the deal with FOTA, the teams' association has agreed to recognise the FIA's position as the sport's governing body, adding that a new Concorde Agreement has been agreed in principle to keep all of the teams in F1 to 2012 and, upon re-negotiation, it is hoped beyond.

"The manufacturer teams have further agreed to the permanent and continuing role of the FIA as the sport's governing body," added the statement. "They have also committed to the commercial arrangements for the FIA Formula 1 World Championship until 2012 and have agreed to renegotiate and extend this contract before the end of that period.

"All teams will adhere to an upgraded version of the governance provisions of the 1998 Concorde Agreement."

Furthermore, with it clear that FOTA is not trying to usurp the FIA's authority, FIA president Max Mosley has agreed to not stand for re-election in October.

  • me24/06/2009 at 14:33

Could have been considering Cosworth if they were allowed to run unrestricted. I think that is history so unlikely to be any new Cosworth customers.

what do we think the new teams will really run. not cosworths, surely?

Max Mosley has insisted that far from being pushed out of his position as FIA President by the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA), it was always 'planned, agreed, arranged' that he would step down at the end of his current term in October.

Cannot believe the guy said this - only a day or two back he said he was more than ever determined to stay in power to sort out the issue. The guy just has no integrity what-so-ever!

Elections don't take place until October. I don't think the FIA has a concept of snap elections. Even if Max resigned now, he isn't deemed resigned until someone replaces him... At least that's how I remember it works.

    WHAT???

The reason Max wasn't kicked out 5 years ago was because he was able to buy Luca. Ferrari as they always have stabbed the other teams in the back and did a deal that got them a veto and a huge amount of money. Don't be surprised if that has happened again.

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 16:15

I am surprised so many of you believe Max is going. You surely can't believe he is going simply because he said he will? My guess is either he will be asked to stand by such a large number of people that he will feel he has to despite previous promises or there will be some manufactured crisis that only he can handle.

I know a lot of you have not been watching F1 for long but most of you have been watching long enough to understand how Max and Bernie operate.

Exactly. He has now announced he is going. Just before that he announced he was definitely standing. Before that he said he wasn't sure whether he would stand again or not and before that he said if the vote of confidence went his way he definitely would not stand. And of course just around the time of his original election he said it was wrong for anyone to be in power for more than two terms.

Are you guys buying this because it is what you want to hear or because it was the last thing he said? The only way max will go is if Nick Craw's campaign pushes him out.

have you not listened to this weeks show?

Yeah I was wondering how he got on during the Sat morning, where he went etc...

Lou is a genius. She is thinking about being a professional and some of her stuff is incredible.

Mattw I think is a professional although I haven’t seen as much of his work.

Based on the photos posted here from tim to time there are a lot of really good photographers on this site.

That's great to hear, yeah i'm looking to upgrade to a SLR camera and want some advice on where to start etc

might be okay now. long story short, is that wordpress changed how timezones worked in WP2.8 which we upgraded to a while back. but for some reason mediatemplefail didn't support this new method, thus we didn't account for it.

am assuming that they decided to sort whatever wasn't working, so yesterday all the caclulations that worked previously suddenly went a bit wobbly.

it seems that there is no recording limit. Or not one I've hit. But when you e-mail a video it tells you you can't if it's too long. Seems to be about 45 seconds.

I didn't know Christian Horner was just 35. He's done an awful lot pretty quickly, hasn't he? I mean, F1 team principal at 35? That's amazing!

Nowadays that seems extraordinary but until the manufacturers took hold it was pretty normal. It was not unknown for team princiapals to be th same age or younger than their drivers

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 18:28

Just as I suspected. Richard Porter from Sniff Petrol doesn't think that racing improves technology - he thinks that if a team didn't go racing they would spend the money on R&D instead and develop the same stuff...

Racing does nothing for road cars and hasn't in decades. There is at least as much technology that appears on road cars first and moves into racing than moves the other way. Traction control, ABS, 4 wheel steering, etc etc etc were all in road cars years before they were in racing cars.

It certainly helps with tyres, although it is more of in refinement that racing becomes usefull

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 18:42

What about crash structures, Drive by wire, and turbos?

The publicity is always that racing improves road cars. Th truth is that there is at least as much going in the other direction. Turbos were in roadcars before they were in F1. Fy by wire I don't know. Crash structures could be argued. There are demo films from American car companies showing how they have built crash structures to survive roll overs in the 50s at a time when racing drivers thought the best thing was to be thrown out of the car in an accident.

The J damper was invented for road cars. McLaren bought the rights from the guy who invented it. Lotus I am sure tried active on road cars first. Flibster?

Semi-automatic gearboxes are old hat. You could argue that they are really nothing more than a jazzed up version of the pre-selectors that were on buses decades earlier. Lotus had a clutch button on a conventional gear lever on the 76

That’s great to hear, yeah i’m looking to upgrade to a SLR camera and want some advice on where to start etc

There are no 'bad' cameras in the market, so you cannot go far wrong. When you purchase and SLR, you are buying into the brand (because once you start collecting Canon lenses, switching to Nikon will be expensive...) - so do look at the wider picture of lenses available.

Then it boils down to how much money you have to invest, and what subjects you are interested in (Motor sport I assume - anything else?). Don't forget to budget for memory cards, spare battery, lenses etc.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:04

I seem to remember it was first used by a guy on a dirt oval who wanted to lean how to pace his laps, i am not sure on that though.

There have been speed limits since the 1920s or something. There must have been speedometers then

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 19:04

we are quite useless. which post was the comment on?

I have no idea :( I remember the comment but i've no idea if it was on the daily or the actual meetup thread

  • Jackie24/06/2009 at 19:04

    Boo!

Boo to you too .. I flung some lasagne at you :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 19:06

Boo to you too .. I flung some lasagne at you :)

I flung some bacon back :D

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:06

Boo to you too .. I flung some lasagne at you :)

That is not exactly friendly is it? Lobbing lasagne is rarely considered a friendly greeting

  • Jackie24/06/2009 at 19:06

I flung some bacon back :D

:D ooh quick I must go fling something else

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:06

There have been speed limits since the 1920s or something. There must have been speedometers then

It was probably something else then, the guy did invent something though!

  • Chris Harland24/06/2009 at 19:07

So, not going to the F1 exhibit @ the Science Museum now then...

    Thanks for the heads up!

  • me24/06/2009 at 19:07

I have no idea :( I remember the comment but i've no idea if it was on the daily or the actual meetup thread

found. shall hassle geoff this evening.

  • Alison24/06/2009 at 19:07

as I understood it Max will continue to be president until Ocober but someone else will be dealing with the F1 negotiations.

Ah right, did I hear correctly that they've agreed to reduce spending to levels seen in the '90s over the next 2 years and that FOTA have cancelled their championship plans?

  • me24/06/2009 at 19:07

So, not going to the F1 exhibit @ the Science Museum now then...

    hehe :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/06/2009 at 19:08

So, not going to the F1 exhibit @ the Science Museum now then...

Seriously, go to the Ferrari Store instead. It's Five Pints Certified by RubberGoat ;)

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 19:08

So, not going to the F1 exhibit @ the Science Museum now then...

It's not worth the price entry.

    I realise it's free.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:09

So, not going to the F1 exhibit @ the Science Museum now then...

If you want your mind blown by a table you should consider it.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:09

    Jackie,

We are going to have an all female sidepodpanel in the next series and I notice you have not volunteered yet.

Who says I can't do subtle hints

  • Chris Harland24/06/2009 at 19:09

I'll bear that in mind thanks!

    :D

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:10

    Boo!

Why would anyone want the same furnitue as everybody else, in a badly designed store.

I have been 3 times i think. I should have stopped after the first

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:10

Ah right, did I hear correctly that they've agreed to reduce spending to levels seen in the '90s over the next 2 years and that FOTA have cancelled their championship plans?

They seem to have discussed and agreed lots and signed nothing

  • Lukeh24/06/2009 at 19:11

I liked the giant bear in the Ferrari store, and how red everything is. It takes red shops to a whole new level.

  • Jackie24/06/2009 at 19:11

Who says I can't do subtle hints

    That's subtle .. rofl

  • Alison24/06/2009 at 19:12

They seem to have discussed and agreed lots and signed nothing

Ah okay! I get you. Kinda like last time then.... Hopefully Max won't randomly change parts of their agreement this time when it comes to the signing part then!

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:12

They seem to have discussed and agreed lots and signed nothing

Still no FOTA presser, i suspect some temas are unhappy and want to vote on it.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:13

    That's subtle .. rofl

For me that is subtle. I think an all female show is going to be really interesting. I wonder if it will be different to the other shows or similar. I really don't know what to expect from it.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:14

Still no FOTA presser, i suspect some temas are unhappy and want to vote on it.

FOTA has a meeting in Bologna tomorrow. So it won't be a surprise if it all gets dropped on its head when the "loonies" get involved.

  • me24/06/2009 at 19:14

I was hoping to stir something up.

Odd that other team principles havent said anything in response at all. Its just Luca and John i have heard from. Flav loves being in the papers.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:16

Oii .. black flag for that!

    White flag?

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:17

I have never held back an opinion on here but I am not setting myself up for that. Besides the tick tock is my personal theme tune so I can hardly have a go at anyone else. So long as Amy isn't asking the questions we should be OK

    okay, naughty step then

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:18

That's great. When we started discussing this it was because there were no female volunteers for the next show and we thought we may struggle to get enough to do this show.

I think a certified half wit with his matched Purdies should deal with Max and Bernie

  • Mattw24/06/2009 at 19:19

OK – now here’s the killer question: Would those items have been invented by an R&D department of a car company if they had not been first used in a racing car?

    I think so…

Disk breaks have always been one of the great inovations from Motor sport. Invented by Jaguar for Le Mans, and gave them a huge advantage.

Le Mans has also played a major role in the development of car headlights.

Lotus I am sure tried active on road cars first. Flibster?

    Not sure about that

Semi-automatic gearboxes are old hat. You could argue that they are really nothing more than a jazzed up version of the pre-selectors that were on buses decades earlier. Lotus had a clutch button on a conventional gear lever on the 76

The modern semi-automatic boxes are a far cry from the pre-selectors you mention.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 19:19

    Wouldnt it be Mrs RG?

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:22

I have argued about disc brakes before with people who insist F1 always leads technology

    I agree with that.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast24/06/2009 at 19:22

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:26

Wasn't that Jaguar a Road Car though?

The Jaguar was a road car but as far as I know they didn't run discs on the road although no doubt they tried them on the road as a lot of teams tested on public roads and drove their cars to and from the track.

I wonder when the last time a racing car was tried on a public road??

  • Alison24/06/2009 at 19:27

Still no FOTA presser, i suspect some teams are unhappy and want to vote on it.

maybe they're waiting for their meeting tomorrow? i mean, don't the teams need to sign something to signify that they're dropping their conditions? so i guess that means they agree to what happened?

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 19:30

Hmmm... Maybe there IS something in writing? We don't know all the details yet...

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:32

That is exactly my view. Make him resign first and get a new deal signed, sealed and delivered.

i don't... think so. just tuned in now. they're mentioning zanardi, so i guess it's wtcc.

but given today's events, maybe they went with f1 first and finished it already? not sure.

  • Alison24/06/2009 at 19:37

Most probably, nothing wrong with a bit of conspiracy ;)

Tbh though if it's just a verbal agreement that's happened today then it's not worth the paper it's written on. Max has his own interests at heart and noone else's.

Interesting idea, if I was wealthy enough to stay alive and commute to Paris while doing the job (I once calculated the annual commuter fee from my house to Place de la Concorde needed to do the job properly, alone, at just over £30000 per year).

    The man has a point – is F1 too complicated for the average punter now? {Comment #117}

At a certain level, no. At another level, it always has been.

The trick is to get the compromise point right to allow as many people as possible to access as much of F1 as they want and are capable of understanding given the other pressures on their time and attention.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 19:55

I can't listen now though, I'm listening to something actually important for once!!

I spent years complaining that all the coverage was aimed at people who know nothing. No other sport is covered on the basis that people don't understand it.

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:19

There have been speed limits since the 1920s or something. There must have been speedometers then

Speed limits were introduced much earlier - the man with the red flag era.

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:22

Is it that bad? I'm gonna be in London anyway...

LPG reports that they have moved the alarm sensors to more sensible places and that the jobsworth security guard wasn't there today. She says it wasn't nearly as much fun without all the lovely Sidepodcast people there.

Nooo not security man. I bet he exploded in anger.

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:25

I seem to remember it was first used by a guy on a dirt oval who wanted to lean how to pace his laps, i am not sure on that though.

The Gatso was definitely invented to measure the speed of a racing car (if rally cars count).

  • James24/06/2009 at 20:26

Seeing the thing about the Red Bull video reminds me, there is an application for Red Bull called "Red Bull GP" it's a free application which has videos, pictures, information about this years car and previous years cars and what seems to be a twitter like thing. Wasn't sure if it has been mentioned but I know we all like F1 realted applications ;)

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:27

There are no 'bad' cameras in the market, so you cannot go far wrong. When you purchase and SLR, you are buying into the brand (because once you start collecting Canon lenses, switching to Nikon will be expensive...) - so do look at the wider picture of lenses available.

Agreed. I suggest you take a trip to a camera shop and put the cameras into your hands to see which one you prefer. I ended up buying a Nikon because of the sound it made when you pressed the shutter (plus the Canon equivalent had a rubbish lens in comparison).

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 20:31

Speed limits were introduced much earlier - the man with the red flag era.

Yes but he didn't have a speedometer

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 20:34

Did Hindy just compare NASCAR to Le Mans?!

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:34

I wonder when the last time a racing car was tried on a public road??

There's a Big Picture of the day showing the Renaults on a public road. OK it was closed. Also, Monaco is racing on a public road. Does that count?

Just writing up the Sunday part of my fan report. They asked for a summary of the weekend and I've now just moved onto page 7. Erm...

When I send it, I'm just gonna say that this is what I've written and they can chop and change it if need be. Overall, I'm happy with what I've done. :)

  • me24/06/2009 at 20:42

    one was extra sneaky though.

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 20:42

have you already found cool and innovative ways of using it, that we never would've thought up?

  • Kathi24/06/2009 at 20:54

What are you using it for?

for example just now - finding out what is supposed to be chopped. I seem to have a reading problem, I constantly miss comments.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 20:56

for example just now - finding out what is supposed to be chopped. I seem to have a reading problem, I constantly miss comments.

I miss comments all the time. I think at times they come in so fast and at others I skip comments to follow one story and miss some of the comments on other subjects.

  • Alianora La Canta24/06/2009 at 20:59

    If I were them, I wouldn’t drop my conditions without something in writing from Max first {Comment #944}

That wouldn't reassure me either. He's un-resigned after initiating a formal FIA re-election, including an in-writing assurance he would resign, back in 2004.

I also want to know whether the FOTA press release tomorrow will back up the FIA's story, be a long version of "That was total nonsense" or a balance between the two extremes.

  • Kathi24/06/2009 at 21:00

I miss comments all the time. I think at times they come in so fast and at others I skip comments to follow one story and miss some of the comments on other subjects.

Are we sure Max didn't sign anything? Perhaps he did.

i think the teams have caved way too early.

Have they? Had they waited any longer, they both would've had to commit to the path they were on. Was that the best thing to do for both parties? Am not so sure.

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 21:47

Are we sure Max didn't sign anything? Perhaps he did.

And to be fair, I think this is the first time we've seen a written statement from the FIA itself saying Max won't run. That said, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

    ooh Freeview?

Yes but you have to have a cam and a card

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 21:50

The teams threatened to create their own series because :-

There was no Concorde Agreement in place - There still isn't

They were unhappy with the commercial deal - It hasn't changed

Bernie cancelling traditional races - He still can

Governance by the FIA - Max has promised to resign a day after saying he would definitely stand, after saying he was unsure after sayinf he would definitely not stand if he won the vote of confidence.

Nothing has changed. It is the usual smoke and mirrors

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast24/06/2009 at 21:50

I had to use Vista the other night. That's all I am going to say.

  • Pat W24/06/2009 at 21:51

There was no Concorde Agreement in place - There still isn't

Thought I read in one of the stories earlier that they are under a revised Concorde now..

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 21:51

    A cam?

It goes in a slot on the side of your digital tv, and you put the card in it.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 21:51

And to be fair, I think this is the first time we've seen a written statement from the FIA itself saying Max won't run. That said, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Bernie cancelling traditional races - He still can

Governance by the FIA - Max has promised to resign a day after saying he would definitely stand, after saying he was unsure after saying he would definitely not stand if he won the vote of confidence.

I think the teams can bear the first three - remember, they were open to Bernie joining them. Nothing would've changed there, either.

Max was a way bigger issue here than Bernie. Which really makes me believe that LDM would've made Max some sort of document to make sure he doesn't go back on his word this time.

Clive (of F1Insight) also believes that Max is done.

  • Pat W24/06/2009 at 21:52

It goes in a slot on the side of your digital tv, and you put the card in it.

Ahh ok, never heard of that.

I knew about the cards to go into the STBs but didn't even cross my mind what to do with built-in Freeview tellies..

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 21:53

Thought I read in one of the stories earlier that they are under a revised Concorde now..

They have agreed one but nothing is signed. Max has a habit of changing documets between agreement and signing

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 21:53

As Alianora pointed out earlier in 2004 Max resigned. He is still there

But not under pressure from FOTA - wasn't that an internal FIA-only tussle?

Will be off to bed soon-ish. If I don't comment again, good night. :)

  • Pat W24/06/2009 at 21:54

Thought I read in one of the stories earlier that they are under a revised Concorde now..

I expect Luca will be trying to persuade the other teams to accept it in the FOTA meeting tomorrow. Unless he was in phone contact last night.

Howett has already voiced his approval. It's as good as approved.

For now still think Max is transfering f1 responsibilities to the f1 senate, which he will then control

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 21:56

Clive (of F1Insight) also believes that Max is done.

    I haven't read Clive yet

Max has been against the wall so often. He has resigned before. He has promised to step down. Early in his presidency he made a statement that he would only run for two terms because it was wrong to be in power for longer and there was a rule that he could only have two terms.

I see nothing in the latest statements that is different to anything that has happened before. I expect him to be president at this time next year

  • Journeyer24/06/2009 at 21:56

As Alianora pointed out earlier in 2004 Max resigned. He is still there

Also, with Joe saying Boeri is taking over F1 negotiations, I think that's a big sign that Max has indeed lost power.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 21:56

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 22:14

Lotus I am sure tried active on road cars first. Flibster?

Active Suspension - first conceptualised for use in F1 by Team Lotus, first ran in a F1 race in 1983 *Mustaschioed whinger at the wheel*. First win was in 1987 at the hands of Ayrton Senna - won a further twice with the system.

Team Lotus initially developed the system on it's own - then after the race in 1983 ran the development in conjunction with Lotus Engineering - this assisted the development as many more test miles could be put onto the software.

I believe the road car test mules were Lotus Excels

*goes to hang his head in nerd shame*

You might want to get it out of your system now. Better to reduce the chances of CTL chucking you out on the Sidepodmeetup later on this year for interrupting and knowing too much ;)

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 22:17

It's OK if you have ever worked in the industry though.

    never worked on active suspension.

Worked on a passive version of active suspension - I know that sounds odd, but it was the computer controlled suspension that was banned. We developed a version of active that worked without the computer.

It was very complicated, very heavy *around a 15kg system - F1 dampers at that time came in at around 5kg for the set of 5* but made our test car go in excess of a second a lap faster.

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 22:20

    Wow, was it banned?

We never developed it past that single test system.

A team bought the designs and as far as I know, never used any of it. We were paid a very significant amount of money.

Not bad for a project that we worked on in our spare time. A bit like the Dodge Viper.

  • Andy Taylor24/06/2009 at 22:20

    It's still allowed

I mean Flibster is allowed to post this stuff without feeling ashamed.

  • Alianora La Canta24/06/2009 at 22:21

    Also, with Joe saying Boeri is taking over F1 negotiations, I think that’s a big sign that Max has indeed lost power. {Comment #1081}

That was supposed to have happened in 2008 after Max's little scandal. Six weeks later, Max was acting like nothing had happened.

There have been some hopeful developments today, but this isn't over yet by a long chalk.

So, still a two tier championship then...

    Arse.

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 22:24

Joe says cosworths probably limited to 20,000 revs next year, sorry if i missed it earlier!

Surely they won't allow that, unless they think Cosworth will be so useless.

  • Alianora La Canta24/06/2009 at 22:24

    I will believe it when he does not have any FIA position. {Comment #1084}

Um... ...that could be a long wait. Balestre was a member of the FIA Senate from the moment Max won his second election in 1992 (and thus passed his self-imposed probation) until he died. It's a tradition in the FIA to give all ex-Presidents such a position.

The good news is that the nature of the FIA Senate, which tends to cloak everyone except the President in anonymity, means that Max probably won't have anywhere near as much power from the position as we may fear.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 22:25

Surely they won't allow that, unless they think Cosworth will be so useless.

It wont be, idoubt they will have the reliability or the power output of teams that have been running them much longer

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 22:26

They'll probably also ditch the 3 race rule for them as well.

I'd rather take the extra 200bhp or so and run the risk of a blowup.

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 22:27

I believe the road car test mules were Lotus Excels

I am sure there were some active Esprits

  • Paul24/06/2009 at 22:28

I'd rather take the extra 200bhp or so and run the risk of a blowup.

As would most teams. It won't last. The existing teams will not allow one of these newbies to have a significant power advantage.

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 22:29

I am sure there were some active Esprits

Early on there was a couple, it moved to the Excel and these did most of test mileage.

That would be against the regulations as currently written. I can only assume that if they are permitted by a subsequent regulation change, they'll be the straight 2006 units and no modifications at all will be made to them for any reason, except to plug in anything the standard ECU needs.

    Thats my solution.

  • Nick24/06/2009 at 22:51

Max, Bernie and Luca went into a room, Bernie and Luca came out with jobs!

Aside from that breakaway off, F1 commission back, FOTA separated deals with FOM and FIA, and they now deal with the senate instead of the president.

13 team list of f1 teams released for next season!

  • lou24/06/2009 at 22:54

Custom earphones and a throat mike.

    Thats my solution.

that's a good idea, however we were very lucky to get the radio packs we were using today (almost £300 each) and they worked perfectly. If it wasn't just the one evening, and if some of the kit wasn't on lone then we would have done something else about it. :)

  • Flibster24/06/2009 at 22:57

My throat mikes came from FleaBay - cost £30 or something like that for an assorted box of them. Found 3 the same, found the one that worked best and use that with the other two for spares. Flogged the rest back on the bay.

I think in the end they only cost £5 or soemthing like that.

And which show was Mrs C on radio tees?

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 23:06

I posted this on Joe's. To me it doesn't seem exactly controversial

I have to disagree with you Joe. The teams have promises but absolutely nothing concrete that I can see. There is no new commercial deal. There is no signed Concorde Agreement. There have been no limits placed on Bernie’s ability to manipulate the calendar to benefit CVC while penalising teams, sponsors and fans by cancelling traditional races and racing in front of empty grandstands in countries with no interest in the sport and no market for sponsors.

They have a promise from Max that he will stand down but he already made that same promise at the tim of the vote of confidence and reneged on that.

I have not caught up on all the news yet so there may be something I haven’t seen but as far as I can see the teams have gained nothing tangible.

My comment on James's blog is a bit more controversial.

I would happily place a bet now that Mosely will not step down. he will manufacture a crisis that needs his attention or so many people will ask him to stand that he will be compelled to. Usual bull.

I really can’t see why FOTA has agreed to this deal. There is no new financial agreement. There is no signed Concorde Agreement. There is nothing new. Max has agreed to step down within 24 hours of saying he will definitely stand. Before that he said he was unsure and before his vote of confidence he said if the vote went his way he definitley would not seek re-election. Givin that he rapidly changed his mind after that promise why should anyone believe him this time?

His argument at the vote of confidence was that he was the only person who could re-negotiate the commercial rights deal. Which was dis-ingenuous as he disqualified himself from the original negotiation on the grounds of conflict of interest. I notice that since the vote of confidence he has made no attempt whatever to re-negotiate the commercial rights deal and no-one is holding him to account for it.

I cannot believe the teams have bough this deal. No doubt we can re-live the same farce in 2012 or sooner if the dreadful Mosely decides he has to remain in power.

  • Scott Woodwiss24/06/2009 at 23:06

Portugal 1992. It was more of a half-somersault.

    Thanks

Portugal 1992. It was more of a half-somersault.

What I loved about it was that after he'd hit Berger, his skidded along the pit wall and when it stopped he just flicked his head and got out! :D

any word on how the world champ wll be crowned? Back to points, or still the stupid "most wins" idea?

Points. Wins are dead as are medals

  • Steven Roy24/06/2009 at 23:48

I never thought of it like that :( (sorry Heikki)

Amy i caught in an apology loop

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 00:07

So we all like Timo and want him to go to McLaren yet we don't think it's gonna happen? Riiiiiiight......

No. We all want Paul di Resta to get the McLaren drive. He kicked Vettel's butt when they were team mates and deserves a break.

  • Bassano Clapper25/06/2009 at 00:10

I've yet to witness PdR's skills but would like to

Timo won't cut it, MacLaren need someone to challenge Lewis for wins and push the pair (and team) forward

Who that is, I don't don't know. I'd like to see Kubica there

    [Sorry Amy & RG]

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 00:10

You're not Steven Roy are you? ;)

No. He just talks a lot of sense

Kubica is not an option. His driving style is the polar opposite of Lewis's. Putting them in the same team would lead to one of them feeling very neglected

  • Bassano Clapper25/06/2009 at 00:14

His driving style is the polar opposite of Lewis's.

I wondered that but didn't know. Aside from di Resta, who is established and has an oversteer preference?

  • Steven Roy25/06/2009 at 00:19

I wondered that but didn't know. Aside from di Resta, who is established and has an oversteer preference?

Kimi. They should be able to cope with comeone who prefers neutral or very slight oversteer but Kubica, Alonso and Massa are all extreme understeerers. I am amazed that McLaren managed to give Hamilton and Alonso a car they could both drive in 2007.

  • Bassano Clapper25/06/2009 at 00:20

Vista rocks doesn’t it. Great chance of winning tonight I reckon

I think he was Apple baiting personally

Wish he would but cannot see Kimi returning

[or staying in F1 beyond his Scuderia contract]

Would love to be proved wrong though, have always rated him very highly since Sauber

Today at work, inspired by the earlier post, I listened to all 93 Backstreet Boy songs I have on my mp3 player.

Not sure if this was post-ironic or still hanging aound since that tour but spotted this in a Hanoi store and couldn't resist snapping... [wasn't that long ago]
