It is Mark Webber's birthday today, and he was born in 1976 which makes him 33 years young. Webber will be spending his day preparing for the upcoming race in Spa, so will he get cake? We can only hope so. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about at the moment:

  • Glock has admitted he's slightly concerned about the possibility of Toyota pulling out - but only in so much as he's having to extend his search for a potential race drive. It looks like his number one choice is with the Japanese team, though, so he'll have his fingers crossed the budget gets signed off.
  • The vast improvements in the McLaren car have left the team feeling a lot more confident about next season, as they know they'll be starting from at least a half-decent base. It doesn't really matter though, the speed in which this team have turned things around means they could start with a kart and still be racing for wins by the end of the year!
  • Renault have joined in the KERS resurgance, floating the possibility of running the device in Monza. Supposedly, it would suit the circuit better than it would here at Spa, and if Red Bull are going to bring it back, Renault probably don't want to be missing out.

That'll do it for now. You're free to discuss whatever you want in the comments, you don't have to stick to anything I've mentioned above. You don't even have to stick to F1! I'll see you there!

first dumb question of the day then. did we know the ferrari has x3 camera mounts around the roll hoop?

and if so... why so many, would one not suffice? also... are they all fom camera's or for ferrari data capture too?

  • Nick26/08/2009 at 23:29

and if so... why so many, would one not suffice? also... are they all fom camera's or for ferrari data capture too?

It looks like 2 of them are real, i belive the teams select where they put their 2nd camera and they are permitted a dummy on the other side. it looks like ferrari may have put something of their own in instead of a dummy.

Sky italia have a Ferrari only on-board channel so they probably need more cameras on their cars to mix it up a bit

  • Nick26/08/2009 at 23:30

James allen has called up Bruno Senna for the lowdown on AD.

    File this one under interesting

I have now solved the whole dropio problem. Anyone wishing to upload stuff to the sidepodradio drop can ask Christine, Mr C and I for the password and upload their files. I have created a secret drop that only the three of us know about (once I tell them) and as soon as we know there are files in the sidepodradio drop they will be sent to the new drop and deleted from the sidepodradio drop so no-one can access them even if they have the guest password.

Not at all. You found a problem I didn;t know about. The whole point of the sideodradio drop was to stop people listening to content so that it would all be fresh on the day and yet the whole time it has been there anyone passing could access.

Lemmings are small creatures which you get in the countryside up in scotland and some parts of northern england.

They are annoying but they are the main source of food for Haggis, so they have to be kept around

They dont really do anything much other than walk about, but if one drops down the chimney, they make a lot of noise.

It sometimes fun to watch the Haggis chase them around the hillsides though

  • Alison27/08/2009 at 00:15

Okay, I think that I get it, it's a game.

It's an awesome game that swept the country way back in the early 90s. Steven's just discovered it this week. He's being swept by it now.... It's stupidly addictive.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2009 at 00:15

  • Steven Roy27/08/2009 at 00:19

Okay, I think that I get it, it's a game.

Lemmings as in the animal are reputed to commit mass suicide by just walking off cliffs. The point of the game is to save them from themselves using some un-lemming like skills such as building, digging, mining etc. It is a little addictive but I think I am on top of the addiction. Must just go and have a go at the new level again

  • Steven Roy27/08/2009 at 00:19

    how far have you got?

Level 8 of the second or third difficulty. Can't remember which. Fortunately the game does.

    Alison,

If you have never heard of Clapton go to youtube or last fm and listen to anything by Eric Clapton, Cream or Derek and the Domino(e)s.

You must have heard of Layla. That is one of the most famous songs ever

No that was the Valencia president. Clapton knows what he is talikng about when it comes to racing

  • Joe in Fla27/08/2009 at 00:25

what chords do you know so far?

None really, just trying to make my fingers do something 44 year old fingers don't want to do.

  • Joe in Fla27/08/2009 at 00:26

understood. we will expect updates of your progress though.

start with an 'A' chord. tis an easy one.

Was he the guy wasting valuable grid walk time?

Blimey, if I had one complaint about Martin Brundle, it would be his capacity to start endless conversations with dull celebrities.... GO TALK TO THE F1 DRIVERS

  • Nick27/08/2009 at 00:28

No that was the Valencia president. Clapton knows what he is talikng about when it comes to racing

So do a lot of people here though.

I have no idea why the BBC think we need to know what the likes of Halliwell and clapton think

  • Joe in Fla27/08/2009 at 00:31

start with an 'A' chord. tis an easy one.

I will look that up. I've watched VH-1, apparently large amounts of alcohol are good for guitar playing...I'm testing that theory.

If RBR and Renault do decide to reintroduce KERS, will it work for them? Was it developed enough to be effective for them? Also, does this affect the chances of KERS returning for next season?

Good for them if it makes them faster, but the more cars with KERS, the less effective it will be overall in helping them overtake.

  • Amy27/08/2009 at 00:40

Doohickey is total magic. Saved my butt last weekend - getting practice updates

  • Paul27/08/2009 at 05:30

I wonder when Mr C will write an iphone app for total SPC goodness.

  • Amy27/08/2009 at 05:47

It does through the browser. I'm sure there is more magic that could happen, but I am happy it works as it does.

    Morning all,

doohickey already works on iphone though

The only downside is that it's quite wide and so to fit on one screen the text becomes quite small...

Doesn't flipping it sideways solve the problem? :D

Morning, everyone. Mobile doohickey rules! It's my only way of monitoring the track action when I don't have a PC.

McLaren Flexible on short wheelbase option - AUTOSPORT

How can they make the car both short and long wheelbase? That's genius - Ferrari could have done with that last year!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/08/2009 at 06:57

WOW! - iRacing is going to have IRL cars!

This is the GPL/Indycar Racing/NASCAR Racing guy - quite simply the benchmark for simulators and the real drivers are singing it's praises already. Sounds Awesome!

  • Journeyer27/08/2009 at 07:02

Good point. Well, I do manage with the vertical one fine.

Gotta love F1 engineering. :D Well, Ferrari didn't need it last year, I think - they still ended up as contructors champs, and they could've ended up as driver champs if they avoided the error in Singapore or had a more reliable engine in Hungary.

Yes, very true, but there were races where people would say "Oh, this track doesn't suit Ferrari as it's a long wheelbase car"...

Regardless of the circumstances, I miss last year - it was intense and terrific. This year is too much of a 'slow burn' for me.

Belgium is one of the few places I have been to abroad. My two main memories of it are:

    1) Picking up quite a funky carrier bag from the EU Headquarters. Might still have it somewhere.

    2) Chocolate.

  • Amy27/08/2009 at 09:12

I have decided on Nandos instead of KFC tomorrow. Change in routine. I might struggle.

    4 April Malaysia

18 April China - thought to be the last race

unless the CRH strikes a deal with Beijing

    25 April Bahrain

16 May Spain - with, allegedly, an official test

session in Spain preceding the race

    30 May Monaco

    13 June Turkey

    27 June Canada - Mont-Tremblant?

    11 July Britain - possibly followed by a week-long

    test session if Silverstone

    25 July Germany - if...

1 August Hungary - subject to Calendar Commission

permission as it falls within August

    22 August Belgium

    5 September Europe

    12 September Italy

    26 September Singapore

    3 October Japan

    31 October Abu Dhabi

but just looked at how the 2010 F1 calendar may look:

Not too bad. Here's my notes:

Hey, they STILL start with 4 races in the first 5 weeks! :D

China - It'll be the last? So much for our plan to go to Shanghai in 2011. Korea better be around in 2011, as we're not sure we can afford going to Australia.

Spain - Does this note of a test session mean the testing ban is dead?

Turkey - I thought this race was dead?

Canada - Mont-Tremblant? We haven't been there in a while. Why not Montreal? Unless this is an FOM ploy to get the city to agree to a higher price?

Germany - if... Nurburgring agree to hold it, you mean?

  • Paul27/08/2009 at 09:55

Boo from the paddock for jetlag and burnout. ;)

But they get paid for it and get to be at the races, so less boo!

But shorter circuits are tighter with less overtaking?

Is that true or is that a generalisation?

Mont-Tremblant is fast and flowing, they'll have to live with it being a bit narrow and bumpy and if they have good investors they can sort that out. What is the lap length? I can't look it up right now.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/08/2009 at 10:28

Sounds like an interesting prospect... assuming Tilke doesn't have to wield his hatchet...

    4.3km I think.

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 10:31

Is that true or is that a generalisation?

Brands Hatch Indy is 2km and theres always opportunitys to overtake even in the bigger series.

However this being F1.....it depends on the circuit

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/08/2009 at 10:32

Brands Hatch Indy is 2km and theres always opportunitys to overtake even in the bigger series.

Very true, but it only has 5 corners?

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 10:33

Very true, but it only has 5 corners?

It's small but has good overtaking....disprove the short circuit-no overtake rule? Maybe, but as i said, F1 is a different ball game

  • F1Wolf27/08/2009 at 10:34

Does Valencia in September have a higher likelihood of rain?

no :-) but less people will be on holiday and more in the grandstands (that is the hope)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/08/2009 at 10:34

Depends if you define the Indy circuit as a full circuit in it's own right or a shortened version?

  • F1Wolf27/08/2009 at 10:35

    indeed. KLIA IS in Sepang.

KLIA is right behind the grandstand K1 :-) you turn one way you watch the race, you turm the other way, you see the planes landing. you turn any way, you see palm oil forests :-)

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 10:35

Depends if you define the Indy circuit as a full circuit in it's own right or a shortened version?

I'd personall count it as a full circuit, if DTM and other larg-ish series race on it then it should be classed as full. The GP circuit dosent get used much at all

  • Jeremy27/08/2009 at 10:36

Reading the Q&A with Campos's Daniele Audetto on Autosport.

We have many good engineers coming, but I cannot tell you who they are because they are still under contract with other teams. The technical director, for example, we cannot reveal his name but right now Giampaolo Dallara is going to the technical meetings with Ben, so we are quite covered in this area.

Willing to put my house on it being Geoff Willis, who was rumoured to be in talks with them shortly before his departure from Red Bull.

  • Pat W27/08/2009 at 10:53

4.3km doesn't seem too bad. Hardly Brands Indy or Lime Rock is it..

Brands Indy is great for touring cars and utterly useless for open-wheel cars. The '03 Champ Car race on it was dire.

  • Journeyer27/08/2009 at 10:54

Willing to put my house on it being Geoff Willis, who was rumoured to be in talks with them shortly before his departure from Red Bull.

REALLY. If that's true, that's a massive recruitment coup for them.

On the lighter side... from RealBrawnGP:

Luca Badoer Update: Didn't have a pass for the paddock this morning. Honestly.

    :D

And one thing that we would like is that the fourth team that is taken should have the Cosworth engine, because when we entered the only engine available was the Cosworth.

With all respect to Cosworth, but if the next team that comes has a Ferrari or Mercedes-Benz engine, then I don't think that is fair on us.

In case anyone is interested I watched the two episodes of Doctor Who (which I'm also currently starting from the beginning with) which have the scary gas mask boy in it... Mummy, mummy, are you my mummy?

That's quite a few things. Lets go with:

    1) put lots of sun tan lotion on the arm that will help make it feel better

    2) Don't worry about the teachers, you don't have to reply while you're on holiday do you? So continue to be on holiday. They have dematerialised until next week. Having the e-mail all in your inbox means that you won't have to wait for answers to stuff once you're back and all business like on your return from your hols

    and

    3) I'll see what I can do - heatwave in Spa?

doohickey already works on iphone though

The only downside is that it's quite wide and so to fit on one screen the text becomes quite small...

On android the text seems to wrap to the width of the screen when you zoom in?

  • Alex Andronov27/08/2009 at 11:44

    Yay :)

I'm worried about being out of sequence. Should I start again from the very beginning?

Chandler has just drunk like a million cups of espresso.

Could he *be* any more caffinated?

Ross & monica are brother and sister

Chandler is ross's room mate from college

And rachel went to school with monica (and ross)

Joey is Chandler's room mate now

And pheobie used to be Monica's

    That's right, right?

  • Alex Andronov27/08/2009 at 11:56

  • Christine27/08/2009 at 11:56

    That's right, right?

    That is correct.

In future flashback episodes (that's a weird phrase), you get to see how Joey got the room, what it was like when Pheobe lived with Monica, plus lots and lots of the gang at school/college.

Because DC slowed to move over for him, Schumi didn't see him through the spray and hit him, then stormed down the pitlane to scream "You tried to F*** kill me!"

The undertone to this is that Schumi was under pressure as Hakkinen was monstering him that year, and had he won that race he would have gained on him...

  • Pat W27/08/2009 at 14:32

I'm sat here checking a 7-page invoice and all I'm wondering is... what is Alex watching now?

  • Alison27/08/2009 at 14:34

    what?

I love it! I find it really relaxing. It's one of my favourite jobs to do.

  • Pat W27/08/2009 at 14:39

I love it! I find it really relaxing. It's one of my favourite jobs to do.

I like the actual counting, agreed on that. Its just when people move things... and things don't agree to your records..and people stare at you for daring to walk around their area with a clipboard..grr..

luckily someone else does the product so i can not smell of maturing cheese/bacon and can be out of there in 3.5hrs. what do / did you count?

  • me27/08/2009 at 14:40

what do / did you count?

    myself lucky.

  • Alison27/08/2009 at 14:42

Stuff you'd find in a coffee chain. Everything from paper cups, packaging, crockery, cleaning products, condiments, cakes, sandwiches.....

  • Alison27/08/2009 at 14:45

We have to do it while still trading, so yeah. Moving/selling stuff drives me mental....

Tricky with customers around.. We have to do it while the production line is running, thankfully it isn't as busy in the afternoon, most of 'em start early and finish early hence why I count at that time...

  • Bassano Clapper27/08/2009 at 14:52

It is but 3gig a month isn't an awful lot. Fine for mild browsing and emails I'd imagine. Stay away from songs and video downloads

  • Bassano Clapper27/08/2009 at 15:08

There is no 'almost' or 'try' that is applicable to that sentence. It will happen. RG has foretold it. Probably

  • Alex Andronov27/08/2009 at 15:09

    Well, to quote Rocky IV

    "I will break you"

That's what I was afraid of!

As both Katherine and I are sick it seems like it might be a catching thing so it wouldn't be very fair :(

Maybe he was really useful at developing the car. They're hardly known to be the sentimental type down at Ferrari. Presumably he added something of value or he'd be long out the door.

two random thoughts for the night.

    - if the bbc really are struggling for budget. should cbeebies be the first thing to be dropped? maybe before this weekend?

    - if vettel is limiting his running due to a lack of engines. the fans are being short-changed again, due to ill thought out regulations. both those in the grandstands and those watching at home on friday.

Just rushed in to the TV room because I heard Moby's "Lift Me Up" as an intro to a Danish reality cop show. The intro footage was shot in a spookily similar style to ITV's F1 intro.

I explained to her that this was the Intro for the ITV F1 coverage and she replied "Yeah... I like the BBC intro song better"

Psh atmosphere and history is overrated. Albert park has been popular for too long. Being at cool new tracks with my buddy hermann making them unsuspiciously similar in non-interesting locations is the new in thing!! I;m down with the sports fans.

    how's your laptop lukeh?

  • Lukeh27/08/2009 at 19:30

    how's your laptop lukeh?

I has fixed it by myself!! I'm back on it now :)

Wierdly enough I fixed it by messing about with a windows update disk rather than the OS on the disk, but my brother owned it and it woke up the hard drive to re-install windows I guess. Went on the BIOS, made it read the disk drive first like I did with ubuntu yesterday but for some reason, the one that shouldnt have worked, worked. Which is perfectly fine as it's a clean install but it got the hard drive working. Seems like when the laptop was booting up it simply refused to acknowledge the hard drive.

So... hardware fail. And windows fail, kinda, for their product not doing it's job but actually helping in some bizarre paradox :P

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 19:32

    #sidepodspace update

STS-128 - Take 4 and still getting earlier.

Friday morning's launch attempt has been scrubbed. I don't know the reason why yet but I assume the valve that stopped attempt 2 has not performed as well as expected in tests or they need more time to be sure.

Launch attempt number 4 will be at 11:59 pm Friday evening Eastern / 4:59 am Saturday morning UK time.

There is a press conference to discuss the reasons for attempt 3 starting in half an hour.

Update 2 (6.15pm BST): Apple’s Cupertino spokesperson tells us it has approved the iPhone app from Spotify, the music service that many people believe represents a threat to iTunes: “The current status as of right now is it’s been approved and we hope to add the app to the more than 65,000 apps on the app store very soon. We’ve been in constant communication working with the developer and have already notified Spotify that the app will be in the app store very soon.”

CAKE! I wish i was wearing my slippers. I am at work an hour early as a favour to a colleague who wanted a sleep in and getting out of my pjs and into real clothes was too traumatic for 7am. So trackpants it is.

cheers alison. am guessing the scrollbar goes away if you switch to a different post?

  • Pat W27/08/2009 at 21:56

I always liked the Top Gear (not related to the series) SNES game intro music.

This opinion is absolutely 100% positively not because it inspired the sound to a Muse song. No way. No sirree.

    holy similarity!

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 21:56

cheers alison. am guessing the scrollbar goes away if you switch to a different post?

looks like earlier someone wrote something too wide....or she still has the big pic of the bus embeded on her post still

something like that. i can't tell which bit is failing to wrap on mine, but something must be.

  • Alison27/08/2009 at 21:57

cheers alison. am guessing the scrollbar goes away if you switch to a different post?

Yeah it does. Has someone just written a stupidly long word or something. That's not much of a mystery. Oh it's gone now totally.

  • Steven Roy27/08/2009 at 21:57

How do I make it too narrow? I can't alter the width. I don't understand.

Is it full screen? I tend to shrink the width so that it is all one column wide which is about half the screen wide but if you make it narrower than one column I get a scroll bar

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/08/2009 at 21:58

cheers alison. am guessing the scrollbar goes away if you switch to a different post?

I think if you take formula1blog, as a formula 1 blog, just like any other, then all is ok.

the case i put to todd, was that commenting on an alonso plane crash that featured neither alonso nor a crash, isn't giving an opinion, it's creating a fantasy.

therefore commenting on GMM stories that have a history of being very unreliable, is a bit like writing fanfiction.

there's nothing wrong with fanfiction by any means. but neither can it be considered "offering an opinion". it's simply making stuff up.

I had a conversation with Nick earlier, on a general scale

I think we sorta eastablished that, while we all like to speculate, we don't tune into SPC week in, week out - to be fed bull

We respect the opinion even if, sometimes, we don't agree

On those occasions, we thrash it out in the comments, like adults

  • me27/08/2009 at 23:11

theres the truth...the truth thats got some rumour in it, theres rumour that has some truth in it, and then theres just making it up....

a story was published online, by a *cough* newsagency claiming alonso was injured in a plane crash. it was the off-season, predictably it spread like wildwire.

later pictures appeared showing the plane had rubbed against a perimeter fence, and later still alonso's manager said this:

"It seems that the plane took a blow while they were parking it," said Luis Garcia Abad. "Fernando wasn't even inside the aircraft."

    linky

  • Jon Waldock27/08/2009 at 23:12

    2) they just plain made it up

"consider the source". This sort of thing is happening more and more on the internets. I think you just need to have your trusted news places, and take the rest with a grain of salt.

  • me27/08/2009 at 23:17

either way, for that particular story, i dont have the words to explain my discust

you've missed a possible point number three.

    3) the story was originally printed on a foreign language website and translation software / user error confused some key facts.

either one of 2 things happened...

At least he wasn't reported dead.

Around teh time Michael Jackson died, there was another actor (can't remember the name) who was reported dead in, I think , New Zealand. He had to tweet that he was still alive, because the story was traveling like wildfire.
