Free Practice Friday again, already, and hopefully we will see more enjoyment today than we did this time last week. Actually, that's a given because we're not in the land of concrete. Anyway, here are some of the things we're discussing:

  • F1 Punter has taken a closer look at the possibility of a safety car interrupting proceedings on Sunday, and it's fair to say the chances are high. Apparently, there are bets to the contrary available though, so if that's your kind thing, stay tuned to the Punter.
  • Over on Axis of Oversteer, there's a video of how Spa used to be. The intro line says: "The guard rails were made of barbed wire and were meant to keep the cows off the road..." How things have changed?
  • Now looking at the paddock as they set and prepare for the weekend ahead, Brad Spurgeon has a post that gives props to the mechanics and how much they love their job, whilst the Renault blog has some insight into Thursday at Spa, including some beautiful photos showing what great weather it is right now.

That'll do it for now, but if you've got a spare few minutes and haven't already, check out our Flickr account. Photos are going up now from our exploits at the British GP. We're nothing if not timely. I'll see you in the comments.

I can be quite girly really though.... My biggest issue at this moment in time is that there's a moth on my laptop screen and I want to kill it without having to clean my screen.... Preferably without touhing it....

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 00:12

I've tried encouraging it to fly away and it won't budge

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 00:16

The lights are off, that's why it landed on the screen.... Anyways it's too late, I poked at it with a bit of paper, it didn't move so I squashed it in a paper bag. Phone the RSPCA if you want.

Yeah. I could be like "I made a mistake about that.... It turns out they lost. I was confused"

    It'd be thoroughly believable

Yeah. I could be like "I made a mistake about that.... It turns out they lost. I was confused"

Sounds good, he deserves it. As long as he's in a cricket starved nation ...

    Oh wait

?Over on Axis of Oversteer, there’s a video of how Spa used to be. The intro line says: “The guard rails were made of barbed wire and were meant to keep the cows off the road…” How things have changed?

You mean that since they took out the Masta Kink in the middle of the backstraight cows can now roam freely onto the roadcourse? How is that safe? being back the old circuit so that the cows are safely behind the barbed wire !

What would have the papers saidf old Gerhard Berger lost a win due to an unfortuneate accident with a Bovine ? :D

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 05:43

    Morning, everyone!

Looks like the provisional calendar we saw might see changes already (and maybe make Christine happy, too):

    Bahrain could open 2010 season

Sources have confirmed that Ecclestone is discussing with teams the possibility of starting the season with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 14 instead.

Of course Rob Walker will push back against this, but the last time this happened (in 2006), it worked from a ratings perspective. From what I remember, Bahrain 2006 had better ratings than Australia 2005, presumably because of the timezone difference.

But this I find more interesting:

Talks will continue over the next few weeks to finalise the schedule, with BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen confirming that Canada was likely to return, but was not definite yet. "There is an opportunity, but not a contract," he said.

When asked whether he felt it likely that Bahrain or Australia would start the season, Theissen said: "Both scenarios are in discussion, but I have not seen a finalised calendar."

For someone whose team won't be around in F1 next year, he seems to be a lot more involved than I expect him to be... unless... he's leading an MBO? I think a Theissen-led buyout would bolster their chances of keeping their slot in 2010. ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 06:04

    Morning fellow Sidepodders ;)

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 06:14

Perhaps he’s just bored because he has nothing else to do now? :D

Heheh. Could be, but to still be involved in the future of F1 tells me he has a stake in it. ;) This is interesting...

Actually I agree with you - he seems to have a big role in FOTA and I think 'Sauber' have a good chance of being in F1 next year...

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 06:33

I like Australia being first. And I didn't like the new time. I want the first race to be in the middle of the night here because:

    a) it means it's special

    and

    b) party

You can stay up to watch a race at 3 just about - but a race at 6 is a bit more tricky.

Meanwhile, over at Maranello, someone got bored.

    Very bored.

    Waiting list

the possibility to drive one of the Reds must be very appetising, at least when one considers the number of drivers, who have been brought up by the media and the fans and even by some of the drivers themselves as candidates for Felipe Massa’s F60 number 3, without even considering some suggestions from the afterworld…

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 06:45

Yeah... but somebody has to somewhere in the world. It seems fairer if at least some of our races are at inconvenient times given that people in the rest of the world have them most of the at inconvenient times.

Goodbye to 4 races in 5 weekends? ;)

Interesting that JA seems to think that:

And all routes seem to point to Nico Hulkenberg getting promoted to a race seat next year [at Williams], possibly alongside Robert Kubica.

If Kubica ends up at Williams, I expect Heikki to end up at Renault with Grosjean. Is Lucas di Grassi contending for the 2nd Renault seat too?

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:09

I suppose I should mention its very hard to find other F1 fans in Florida (despite those guys who lost their blogs, or maybe because of it).

season opener in Bahrain is bad ... why can't their simply run the Australian GP in normal hours insted of waiting till end March for daylight saving ... Oh, I forgot, it is Bernie pulling the strings, the same guy who suggests to race at Spa only once in two years ...

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:12

Heikki at Renault? never, I dont see him as the renault type for some reason...

  • F1Wolf28/08/2009 at 07:13

If Kubica ends up at Williams, I expect Heikki to end up at Renault with Grosjean. Is Lucas di Grassi contending for the 2nd Renault seat too?

the flaw of this thoery is that Hekki got kicked out from Renault once already ...

  • Paul28/08/2009 at 07:14

I'm a lookin. Nothing so far.

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:14

@ F1 yeah thats pretty much what I was thinking, already proven not to be HK style at all

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:14

  • Paul28/08/2009 at 07:16

That is Steven's rumour. I would like to see it too.

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:20

...ugh, still another 40 mins till practice starts. *sigh

...looks through comments, checks blogs for updates, and generally tries to kill some time.

Make with some fresh news already, internets

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:21

I really don’t think Heikki can go back surely.

It'll be a marriage of convenience.

If Williams end up getting Kubica, there's no other decent midfield seat that's open. Toyota won't go for him (they can afford someone better), so that leaves Renault.

Meanwhile, Flavio needs someone capable (not necessarily excellent) to partner Grosjean. Assuming Kubica is at Williams and unless di Grassi ends up getting the other seat, I don't see anyone else who's good enough for the seat.

Besides, the experience Renault had with Piquet will make Kovalainen look a lot better for them.

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:22

That is Steven’s rumour. I would like to see it too.

    JA shot it down:

It seems very unlikely to me. They have Hamilton, they need another driver who will push Hamilton, but it confuses things if you have two drivers expecting to win the championship. They had a great combination in Hakkinen and Coulthard, with DC close enough to win on occasions but not as strong as Hakkinen.

  • F1Wolf28/08/2009 at 07:24

Toyota won't go for him (they can afford someone better), so that leaves Renault.

But can someone better afford Toyota ? Toyota drive never helped anybody as far as I recall ...

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:25

I just dont see it, Journeyer HK -> Renault. it doesnt fit right. Think Flavio for a second. He'll want to do something that isn't expected, as is his style.

What about these news teams? Maybe HK could pick up a ride somewhere that way - surely he'd be a great team leader. He's got the experience and might actually rise to the challenge

  • F1Wolf28/08/2009 at 07:26

Morning.. Just arrived at the circuit and ready for action! 17degrees which is a little cold but think we'll be fine. 1hr10mins b4 kick off! - tweet from Jenson

isn't the FP starting in about 30 mins ? shouldn't someone tell him ? :-)

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:28

dang I wish I'd paid more attention over the past few years where who went. Wondering where Fisi might head off too. That whole thing with LH and Alsono had me all twisted up (big Lewis fan here) and I wasnt paying much attention to the rest of the musical chairs game

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:29

That reminds me of the bit in "Truth in 24" when it was TomK's turn to drive and they could not find him. Some guy called H was running round the garage asking "Where's Tom?"

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:32

This is interesting from Maurice Hamilton:

    FTA:

"Sebastian Vettel was today forced to counter claims that he had attempted to force his Formula One title rival Jenson Button out of last Sunday's European grand prix.

Vettel made a forceful start to the race in Valencia and Button, who had to back off and lose places, said at the time that he thought the Red Bull driver had been aggressive.

Today the championship leader said: "I heard a rumour [after the race] that they [Red Bull] didn't think their engine was going to last the race.""

Wow - this is some proper gamesmanship from Button. Is he getting tough because he knows this has become a long drawn out battle?

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:33

Okay lets sort out toyo's options (thinking from the bottom up here). Glock is probably staying, right, with Trulli taking a walk

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:36

Oh crap n/m its practically pointless. Too many open seats etc.

What are the chances that RBR has another engine failure this weekend eh?

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:38

    Jeez quiet down everyone

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 07:38

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 07:38

    In Vettel's case, fairly high?

  • F1Wolf28/08/2009 at 07:39

I'd say they have probably been working on solving this problem

... getting merc engine instead of renaults ?

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:40

Think Flavio for a second. He’ll want to do something that isn’t expected, as is his style.

He was ready to pick up Jenson at the start of the season had Brawn fallen through. He'll be willing to pick up Heikki if no one else is available.

Wondering where Fisi might head off too.

Ferrari for the remainder of 09, then retirement?

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:41

I'm not sure I quite see what it gains him?

Possible psychological advantage. If Vettel thinks Button thinks he's so predictable, he might try something to change that, which will probably be a mistake.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:41

Wow - this is some proper gamesmanship from Button. Is he getting tough because he knows this has become a long drawn out battle?

I'm not sure I quite see what it gains him?

It might unsettle his opponent - it's typical 'trash-talking' that we get at this stage of the season. I just never thought I'd hear it from Button!

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:42

Wondering where Fisi might head off too.

I'm thinking Ferrari until the Brazil or Abu Dhabi weekend, then Force India for 1/2 races (because Massa will be back) then one of the new teams - maybe Manor.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 07:42

It might unsettle his opponent - it's typical 'trash-talking' that we get at this stage of the season. I just never thought I'd hear it from Button!

But Vettel basically lost the championship last weekend. It's no longer on.

It's really only Rubens and Webber left now.

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:42

Okay lets sort out toyo's options (thinking from the bottom up here). Glock is probably staying, right, with Trulli taking a walk

I'll assess Toyota's options when I'm confident that it, rather than some independent entity, will run the team in 2010.

  • Amy28/08/2009 at 07:43

admit it - who hid my USB modem? I need my backup connection for practice! (and Nandos was tasty)

You could still argue that it's still on. But the probability of another engine failure more or less ensure it probably isn't.

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:46

    lol gavin re: toyota

I doubt Massa will be back as well. Too much time sitting around. have you ever had to have a couple weeks' bedrest? drains you very quickly (had hand surgery last year, in hops. a week and got winded walking up a flight of stairs for several months afterwards)

You could still argue that it's still on. But the probability of another engine failure more or less ensure it probably isn't.

    It's 20 points right? It's still on.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 07:47

    It's 20 points right? It's still on.

    Has he got enough engines?

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:48

If these two get close enough, they could both end up in the wall and then what? Webber and Barrichello duking it out as well? 4-way battle?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:48

    It's 20 points right? It's still on.

    Has he got enough engines?

Two engines plus any old ones remaining. But there's a few races to go, and 20 points is not enough of a gap to say it's all over.

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:48

    Has he got enough engines?

In a word: no. Even RBR admit as much.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 07:48

Two engines plus any old ones remaining. But there's a few races to go, and 20 points is not enough of a gap to say it's all over.

Okay but he should be concentrating on Webber

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:49

Alia, as a FIsi fan, what are your thoughts on him possibly driving for Ferrari at Monza and effectively bookending his career?

I think Fisi at Ferrari is a fantastic idea and will work for everyone. Fisi gets to live the dream he's had since he achieved his other dream of getting into F1, Ferrari gets a competent substitute driver, Force India can use the deal to reduce the amount it owes Ferrari for last year's engine supply and Liuzzi and Force India get to find out how good an idea promoting him to a race seat is (or is not - one has to allow for the possibility of failure).

I'm not sure it will bookend Fisi's career because I believe one of the new teams will take him next year, but if it does, what a way to exit F1!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:49

I doubt Massa will be back as well. Too much time sitting around. have you ever had to have a couple weeks' bedrest? drains you very quickly (had hand surgery last year, in hops. a week and got winded walking up a flight of stairs for several months afterwards)

Indeed. That's not even considering his mental capacity and sharpness either. What if he freaks out?

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:50

Two engines plus any old ones remaining. But there’s a few races to go, and 20 points is not enough of a gap to say it’s all over.

I'd consider that if he were 2nd behind Button. But he's not even ahead of his teammate. That in itself will pose a problem for Vettel's chances.

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:50

I doubt he'll freak but the human body deteriorates rather quickly when at rest. Even these guys need to keep at it constantly (see also: SCHUMI)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)28/08/2009 at 07:50

OK Guys, enjoy FP1 and I'll check in afterwards (too many messages when at work!)

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:51

I'm not so sure he will be... I'd give him a 1 in 3 chance of returning.

Brazil is something of a long shot (and it won't be before then because he's got one more operation to go if I've read correctly). I think Abu Dhabi is more likely - bear in mind he's still got another 9 weeks to prepare for that. There is a chance we won't see him until 2010, but I prefer to be hopeful because I miss seeing his smile...

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:51

Oh thats right, you're all doing that 'work' thing I've heard so much about...

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:53

I doubt Massa will be back as well. Too much time sitting around. have you ever had to have a couple weeks' bedrest? drains you very quickly (had hand surgery last year, in hops. a week and got winded walking up a flight of stairs for several months afterwards)

I've had to do one week of effective bedrest before (I spent some of it in a chair reading, but that was because I was stubborn and bored). Had more energy after the event than before - but then I wasn't in hospital and the cause was a bout of flu. That may have made a difference.

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:53

Oh thats right, you're all doing that 'work' thing I've heard so much about...

Even I did some on Wednesday (unpaid though)...

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:54

Massa's done for the season. It sucks but you've really gotta look at from a fitness standpoint. He's been forced to sit around and take it easy for a while now, even light training is restricted and he'd need a full-on regimen to get back in shape

  • Journeyer28/08/2009 at 07:54

I doubt he’ll freak but the human body deteriorates rather quickly when at rest. Even these guys need to keep at it constantly (see also: SCHUMI)

Schumi's comeback in 99 turned out fine - he practically won on his first race back (he just needed to give the win to Irvine). Webber's season since his injuries hasn't been too shabby, either.

But yeah, what happened to Massa is different.

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 07:55

Webber had that entire off season to recover and was still hurting by all accounts until, what, Turkey?

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:57

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 07:58

And after all that, they're busy...

  • gravit8ed28/08/2009 at 08:01

Ferrari's put itself in such a tough spot. Even if FM could come back by Brazil, y would he? he's out of the running for the most part so they need to be looking at keeping WCC points and next year's car.

They'll need someone who can actually make it around the dang track (omg I know you've all been over this but I was so embarrassed for LB last weekend I couldnt watch whenever they cut to him).

hmm... If they dont stick Gene in I'd bet he'll walk as soon as he gets the chance. That LMS drive was pretty solid, after all. Pugeot are set to take on ALMS next year in spectacular fashion...

Have been keeping a close eye on the weather the BBC is putting out. It was sunny to start with, now they're adding some clouds into the mix for Sunday. At this rate, there will be rain!

am just reading that edd gorman piece. i love this line:

"This was worth hearing from a man who has been dogged all his sporting life by a playboy image and the belief among his critics that he had too much material success too early and that this harmed his competitive edge in a sport in which so many drivers make fortunes but end up as also-rans."

  • me28/08/2009 at 15:21

And when I go back to edit the post it isn't there either...

i think it's because the file extension isn't supported. needs converting into a more generic format.

From what i heard a few weeks ago they were keen to have the race at sunset, but bernie was reluctant to let them do so. Thjey went ahead with the floodlights anyway and i think he has given in.

really? the floodlights have not been in the planning at any point thus far?

and they were still pushing for a 3pm start this morning.

Won't driving at sunset put the sun right in the drivers' eyes. Sounds dangerous.

    I have started a video / podcast / blog / type thing

It's all very exciting (for me) and it is over here: http://goforodd.com/

I know absolutely nothing about podcasting or setting up feeds in iTunes or anything but luckily Christine and Mr C have been very very very very kindly helping me along the way.

There are some bits that are still a bit lot rough around the edges. But I'd love to hear what you think, what you like and what you think should happen with the site in the future. All of the roughness is from me not having asked for help from Christine and Mr C earlier (although I'm not sure they could have stood it).

Anyway tootle over and have a look / listen. Subscribe in iTunes and yeah :)

    http://goforodd.com/

    Enjoy!

There is a race at Le Mans where they have been doing it for a few years.

It doesn't seem to have bothered people driving there, but on the other hand they aren't overpaid and don't have the worlds press to lap up every little complaint they make.

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 16:23

How much information do itunes give you about how many people are subscribed to you, what they're downloading, when it's listened to?

nothing. itunes don't provide any info at all. server logs give you numbers and stuff though.

I am not sure how much i am allowed to say, but the floodlights were originaly to be built after the race, but they were brought forward.

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 16:26

By the way, in 15 minutes or so, my new domain name, lacantablog.co.uk should be functional and linked to my blog.

I have another domain name extension as well, which I will eventually use to pull together all the places where I contribute to the internet.

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 16:26

still, they don't need to do this. only endurance racers race at sunset. to me, this sounds like a gimmick to shore up lagging ticket sales.

  • me28/08/2009 at 16:27

So you know how many times each podcast has been downloaded?

yup. we can't tell if people listen. just when they get downloaded.

but abu dhabi is in the middle east. a twilight race is nowhere near as crucial for them as it would be here in Eastern Asia.

  • Nick28/08/2009 at 16:31

still, they don't need to do this. only endurance racers race at sunset. to me, this sounds like a gimmick to shore up lagging ticket sales.

1st year of any race will sell out. If it was for ticket sales they would have done it the 2nd year.

I don't think anyone in Dubai is more likely to go because it is at sunset this year. But it does make more sense for the future as Sunday is a work day.

The guy in charge of the race in Bahrain said at some point that if they wanted to double the crowd all they had to do was hold the race on friday.

  • Nick28/08/2009 at 16:32

Good to know it works, me and Bassano Clapper :) I'm a bit new to this domain-name stuff, but it's worth it. For one thing, I have the satisfaction of knowing that I've managed to do at least one of the things the Sidepodcast community suggested would be necessary to improve the readership of my site. Also, I get to put slightly longer descriptons in Twitter, if I can figure out how to "semi-cloak" the domain.

Another question has been raised though. I got some free Facebook advertising with the domain - does anyone have any idea what would be the most effective way of deploying it? (It seems a long shot but then hardly anything seems to be beyond the expertise of Sidepodcast as a community).

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 16:39

Doesn't it convert to M4V or something?

    It would seem not... :(

Over on Axis of Oversteer, there’s a video of how Spa used to be. The intro line says: “The guard rails were made of barbed wire and were meant to keep the cows off the road…” How things have changed?

How great is that video of '50s Spa!

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 17:53

Tilke's worst track in the middle of an empty desert make for a horrid combination imo. Just such a lifeless track.

But it being first? Aside from that honour needing to always be with Australia

  • Lukeh28/08/2009 at 17:53

I mean in terms of a championship opener, just Melbourne seems to generate so much excitement and the city gets involved and allsorts. Bahrain just does nothing for me.

  • Lukeh28/08/2009 at 17:53

But it being first? Aside from that honour needing to always be with Australia

Sorry, I should've said alongside with my reasoning there. Have corrected myself. :P

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 17:53

    Ok, agreed

  • Nick28/08/2009 at 17:53

Tilke's worst track in the middle of an empty desert make for a horrid combination imo. Just such a lifeless track.

I like it, the surrounds are different, and there are oppertunitys to overtake which dont exist at pretty much every other tilke track.

Untill i see Abu Dhabi its my second favourite after turkey

  • Joe in Fla28/08/2009 at 17:53

Jimmy has a draft of the 2010 calendar, Canada is back, Baaa-rhain is first and china goes back to the autumn...

Two races pretty close to each other in Spain. Actually both races in Spain are pretty boring

  • Joe in Fla28/08/2009 at 17:54

Tilke's worst track in the middle of an empty desert make for a horrid combination imo. Just such a lifeless track.

    It's a good track on PS3

Thats not the smartest move, they struggle to sell 1 out as it is, unless Alonso is in a Ferrari...

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 17:56

    I didnt start buying shots!

It's a good job I didn't let you buy tequila!

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 17:56

Thats not the smartest move, they struggle to sell 1 out as it is, unless Alonso is in a Ferrari...

Oh my God, I can't imagine how mental they'd be going if he was leading the championship....

  • Lukeh28/08/2009 at 17:56

    It's a good track on PS3

Ahh, we should definitely keep it then :P

I dunno, I can understand it has a few good overtaking areas like the few tight corners but nothing about it appeals to me which is annoying. Plus Melbourne is one of my favourite tracks so I blame Melbourne for making me bias.

    #blamemelbourne

  • Nick28/08/2009 at 17:57

It's a good job I didn't let you buy tequila!

booo... we should have had tequila...

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 17:58

Allen says it's cos the clocks won't have switched by then so Aus is later

Bernie & Max's fault for starting season too early

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 18:01

Allen says it's cos the clocks won't have switched by then so Aus is later

But getting up at stupid o'clock is obviously the best way to start the season.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:02

But getting up at stupid o'clock is obviously the best way to start the season.

Staying up to stupid o'clock is the answer... But when it's 6 am ish it's no fun... :(

    booooooo

  • Alison28/08/2009 at 18:04

Staying up to stupid o'clock is the answer... But when it's 6 am ish it's no fun... :(

My timezone knowledge obviously needs brushing up. What time was Australia? I quite enjoy waking up early and curling up with my duvet to watch races.

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 18:05

Staying up to stupid o'clock is the answer... But when it's 6 am ish it's no fun... :(

I rarely see the whole race the first time round

Alex, leaving now - be there in half an hour'ish

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:06

My timezone knowledge obviously needs brushing up. What time was Australia? I quite enjoy waking up early and curling up with my duvet to watch races.

Well it used to be 3am in the uk with the pre-race program starting at 2am. That was stay-up-able-for. But now it's 6am it's better to get up and that's less partyish!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:06

Alex, leaving now - be there in half an hour'ish

    See you in a bit!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:06

    What else needs fixing?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:09

    What else needs fixing?

Mr C thinks I need some blinds in the kitchen... But we don't have any.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:09

Mr C thinks I need some blinds in the kitchen... But we don't have any.

This is secretly because he wants me to do loads more cooking shows :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:10

What am I going to do now? I've launched my podcast... I'm waiting for Bassano to arrive...

Maybe I should watch some friends?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:10

Maybe I should watch some friends?

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:15

Could you be any more ready?

    Hehehe.

Okay when are we going to press play?

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:16

    Ross is singing...

    Ah they all are :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:18

    Ah they all are :)

I don't know what it is, though.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:18

I've never understood what the extra hand gestures ross and monica do are about

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:19

I don't know what it is, though.

No, but I know the one Ross does at the end...

He always has to take it one step too far!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:19

    That's a lot of lasagna!

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:19

    That's a lot of lasagna!

They have a Joey, though. It's not a problem. :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:20

They have a Joey, though. It's not a problem. :)

    I think he's the solution :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:20

"How come Mommy lives with that other lady?"

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:20

I don't think this is going well from Joey...

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:20

"How come Mommy lives with that other lady?"

    :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:21

At some point Joey says something like, "so basically this is ruined" but I think that's earlier... in the one with the ring rachel gives back to barry

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:21

    Joey's getting broody

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:22

    Joey's getting broody

With their "wittle baby shoes" :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:22

They still haven't got the foos-table... this is very early days... They only had the appartment in the last episode

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:22

I think Ross is going to lie

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:23

    "that's our friend tanya"

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:23

    Hehehe, Huey Lewis.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:23

    A classic misunderstanding

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:23

Of course Ross doesn't want to know... But Susan knows.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:24

Of course Ross doesn't want to know... But Susan knows.

I'm surprised that neither of them went with her to the doctor.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:24

I've gone back into LCLT for this because you can comment so much faster

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:25

I'm surprised that neither of them went with her to the doctor.

Yeah normally they do the big uncomfortable doctor scene.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:25

    There is a rule...

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:25

The impressions you made in the butter left little to the imagination

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:25

    Kip!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:26

    pause

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:28

    pause

It's like a really remote control.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:29

    Sorry... Bassano arrived!

    He's gone now!

Umm... Are we in sync still? I have shots of the city

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:30

    Kip!

We all know Joey is the better roommate, but I guess they didn't yet.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:30

Umm... Are we in sync still? I have shots of the city

    Gotcha. You say go again.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:30

    Okay... Go!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:30

    Ah Pheobie at work...

    "or an uncle" :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:32

    Oooh Monica knows!

    Or an Uncle!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:32

    I love "that table place"

There's a place with just tables?

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:33

There's a place with just tables?

I don't know what kind of place sells tables, including the foosball.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:33

Kip would have picked the birds :)

    Silly Kip.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:35

    Silly Kip.

The birds would have been scary. But so would the lady bugs.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:35

I don't think it's fair to the other cookies :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:36

The birds would have been scary. But so would the lady bugs.

Animals on furniture isn't really a good idea.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:36

It's the most beautiful table I've ever seen.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:36

    Hehehe. No problem at all.

  • Chris28/08/2009 at 18:44

What coursework you got? Exciting? Boring?

Boring. Trying to give a background about where I'm working on placement. Unfortunately, not much fun. Nearly done though!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:44

Rachel is drinking from the thermos in the freeze frame if you can stand to continue!

    Okay are you ready?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:45

Well, we gotta find out how it ends!

    Cool :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:45

    Okay are you ready?

Yup. I have the exact same freeze frame as you!

  • Chris28/08/2009 at 18:46

I know Mr C can't do anything once he starts commenting :)

True. It's ok, I'm typing between reading the comments. It's not too distracting.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:46

Yup. I have the exact same freeze frame as you!

    Awesome!

    Go!

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:47

I can't drink milk as a drink. Ugh.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:47

Monica isn't going to like that with the kitchen roll!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:47

I can't drink milk as a drink. Ugh.

    I would be very ill

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:47

    They are both quite sorry.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:47

But he was my pig man ;)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:48

They should have listened to Chandler's mother. he was only a bit character not the main one.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:48

They should have listened to Chandler's mother. he was only a bit character not the main one.

Although Chandler's mother didn't tell Rachel only Ross

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:48

    Monica keeps cheating by spinning.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:48

    Monica keeps cheating by spinning.

Is that cheating? I have no clue.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:49

I could be on the olympic standing there team :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:49

Is that cheating? I have no clue.

Well it depends on the rules. I like to do the big spinning thing.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:49

    The Age of Ross :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:49

    The Age of Ross.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:50

Well it depends on the rules. I like to do the big spinning thing.

And I often get told off.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:51

And I really think it should be me.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:51

It's a very strange design this balcony... You'd think they'd want a real door to it.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:51

It's a very strange design this balcony... You'd think they'd want a real door to it.

And then after quite a few years of watching Friends, my dad moved to a place where the same thing happened.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:52

Rachel is sick of guys... But doesn't think Ross is a guy.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:52

Rachel is sick of guys... But doesn't think Ross is a guy.

    Hehehe.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:53

    Rachel... just... ooops

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:53

    Ah he's okay with it.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:53

A joey chandler hug. They used to do more of them

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:53

She only wants one more game

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:54

    hahaha... she can't quit

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:54

    And we're done :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:55

    That was fun!

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:55

I got a bit distracted watching it at the end there :)

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 18:57

A joey chandler hug. They used to do more of them

    "Hey, we already knew that."

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:57

I got a bit distracted watching it at the end there :)

    he he :)

Perhaps you were distracted by entering the Age of Ross?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:57

    That was fun!

    It really was!

  • Alianora La Canta28/08/2009 at 18:59

Jimmy has a draft of the 2010 calendar,

I still think Australia should be first. Bahrain did little for me when it last opened the calender in 2006 and I doubt anything has changed in the intervening four years.

Happily, F1 will now start before my birthday, which means things will be less squashed in the calender itself. Does mean teams get two fewer weeks to test though.

Turkey, for the first time since 2006, no longer clashes with university finals. They might get decent attendance there now.

    Canada is a welcome returnee.

You can tell Britain's back in vogue because it's got its prime race slot back for the first time in donkey's years. If Silverstone gets the race back they will be delighted.

Europe plainly isn't high on Bernie's "impressed with" list - it wanted October, not June (when it will hardly be any cooler than August and students may still be finishing exams).

China is now back-to-backed with Japan and is almost back to its original month (in 2004 it was in early October). Rain is slightly more possible, but what will China put in the empty grandstands instead of "Expo 2010"?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 18:59

Sorry about the continual pauses! We could have snuck two episodes in otherwise!

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 19:00

Sorry about the continual pauses! We could have snuck two episodes in otherwise!

Tis okay. The funny thing is my shopping delivery just arrived, conveniently after it had finished :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 19:01

Sorry about the continual pauses! We could have snuck two episodes in otherwise!

But now it's dinner time. Now for dinner I shall be having a very pink dinner!

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 19:01

Tis okay. The funny thing is my shopping delivery just arrived, conveniently after it had finished :)

    heh! Good timing!

  • Bassano Clapper28/08/2009 at 19:04

Damnit, why wont they make an orange one :(

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 19:08

    That really is pink!

We also make a beetroot carbonara. When you add the cream to something that colour it goes that really shocking pink. People can't believe food can be that colour.

It's really nice too. Lots of people have bad memories of beetroot because of the pickled kind they were given as kids this is nothing like that.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 19:19

    I LOVE milk!

I used to drink it minutes after it came from the cow, so the processed stuff doesn't do it for me.

I said minutes after, not straight from the cow.

Out of the cow, down the pipes, into the ice cold tank. Fresh, clean and full of taste.

  • Lukeh28/08/2009 at 19:22

It comes out the cow warm though...

But not out of the fridge!!

Fridge > cows. In fact I'm not even sure if these 'cows' make this 'milk. I think the fridges do it all.

You wouldn't mind so much if they gave you the actual schedule for the radio programme. Why did they say the programme started at 9, then ramble about football for 15 minutes?

  • Chris28/08/2009 at 20:15

    And now, 14 mins late...

  • Steven Roy28/08/2009 at 20:16

    #sidepodspace update

They are filling the shuttle's giant petrol tank for the third time before the fourth scheduled launch time and the third launch countdown. All dates/times from earlier than a couple of days before the first time the crew were loaded have been ignored becuse I can't count that high.

Anyway the plan is to launch at 23:59 am tonight Eastern time (could they *be* more awkward) / 04:59am tomorrow morning or if you prefer in 7 hours 45 minutes. If I get up at 4am to watch the build up and it doesn't fly I am going to ask Christine to write NASA another letter.

How hard can it be to design an 8 inch valve that is only used for one purpose on one part of one type of machine that has flown 127 missions already?

Nasa should outsource it all to a country with better weather....

  • Steven Roy28/08/2009 at 20:30

    #sidepodspace

I should have said weather is 60% which is not so good.

The build up and launch should it happen are on NASA TV at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html . They are live now with the fuel tank filling which has an hour and 20minutes to go. They are cycling the dody hydrogen valve that caused the last launch attempt to be scrubbed. It is behaving now.

    Latest updates at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

  • Steven Roy28/08/2009 at 20:32

Nasa should outsource it all to a country with better weather....

On of the problems with space launches is that the nearer the equator the better and it is preferable to be on an eastern coastline with lots of water next to it and in a lot of cases that means unpredictable weather.

The cover. I kinda like the original... I mean, it's good but I'm not a huge Lou Reed fan. But the cover is just excellent. I absolutely love it! No idea if that's controversial or just stupidity though!

Sadly my pre-ordered copy didn't turn up today, so I have to wait. I did get to play quite a bit today and I like what I see. Exposé and Stacks improved, others are reporting cooler running machines and more efficient processing, but sadly I think your Macbook Pro is too old to benefit from all features.

Good point, I would guess so, but you could put a disk image onto an external drive (firewire) and boot from that.

...oh you haven't seen it? well let me mention it now it's http://goforodd.com/ ...

But I have actually written a post on my actual proper non formula one blog about the parade lap as well which you may be interested in:

  • Aitch28/08/2009 at 21:38

11 litres of varnish. How do you varnish bread?

    Spray it?

For something like that I would brush it rather than spray it because with a brush you can force the varnish into all them little nooks and crannies and if you were to spray it you might not get them all.

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 21:39

best thing about that book? the price... a round ten pounds. nice.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 21:48

Nooo. The best thing about the book is the story about the people in the ear.

Other books would go for the 9.99 option but not me... What would you do with the penny?

I would like to link to something here from an American comedy group but I don't think I should

    Which one was it?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 21:49

Nooo. The best thing about the book is the story about the people in the ear.

    he he :)

If I am being honest in a way that is hugely self congratulatory the best thing about the book is the fact that very few people agree about what their favourite story in the book is.

  • Nick28/08/2009 at 21:50

    Which one was it?

Its actualy virgin 1 +1 (virgin 2?) Big Battle end of season 6

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 21:50

Do you have all these first pages in a drawer somewhere at home?

Well I can't answer that question here in an open forum. The answer to what's happened to the missing page is available from all good resellers.

  • Christine28/08/2009 at 21:50

The most commonly reported back one to me is the story, "Cross words to say". I keep a record... But it's very easy to remember when you've met the person.

You must give them some more :)

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 22:01

Do people ever tell you ones they don't like?

Some people do... I always love to know... And it isn't difficult for me because you have to remember that before they got into the book I fought with Katherine and my friend Nick as to if I'd be allowed to include them.

The way the stories were selected was that we rated the full list that I had (about four times as many in the book) and then totalled the scores. Then we ranked them and cut out any of the lower ones. But people voted to save certain ones.

It was pretty brutal at the time, but once I'd been through that I haven't got much of an attachment.

    Which ones don't you like?

  • Alex Andronov28/08/2009 at 22:02

I cant tell you when i will get around to reading it, i havent been keeping up much latley and i currently have 4 on the go, but it will be the next one i start
