Halfway through the week already, and almost at the end of August. Time is ticking ever onwards, and we've just got six races left to go. Is it all still up for grabs, or are the winners as obvious as when the season started? Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:
- There are suggestions that Fisichella could make a good replacement over at Ferrari. It would be a dream come true for the Italian to drive for his home team, but would they really want him up there? He's a race winner but has he done anything to warrant the step up of late?
- Toyota have blamed their poor performance recently to qualifying. It's the age old excuse that if you don't qualify well, you struggle in the race. The answer is, then, to qualify better. Where are you gonna place the blame for that, Toyota?
- Finally, it's a good week to be a Brawn fan, as off the back of a great win for Rubens, the team have announced they have secured funding for several years to come. Although no details have been given, the next three years appear to be sorted, and Ross Brawn has hinted they may retain their drivers next year as well.
That'll do it for now. The teams are looking towards Spa, so it's time we all did the same. Don't forget to check out yesterday's F1 Big Picture for a glimpse into the past at the track. I'll see you in the comments.
Hello Wednesday!
I think the Fisi to Ferrari rumour might be Joe fishing for a way to get Liuzzi back into F1, but don't tell him i said that!
I was going to say I'd be amazed to see Fisi in a Ferrari - but after Badoer nothing surprises me any more!
A question for those who use graphs in blog posts.. do you create the graph, PrintScreen, save as PNG and insert into a post? Is that the best way to do it?
Pepole wanting more than to read my beautifully crafted words?
Whatever next!
Oh man. Nostalgia central! My first ever boyfriend just re-added me on msn. Now it really is bed time. Night all!
You're in there!
Night!
My Dad just upgraded my internet here, apparently i was getrting too many over usage charges.
Bonus: I'm getting a WiFi router ... 2003 Here i come!
night :-)
Nice..
I know :P. I especially like the fact he didn't suggest i pay for it! :P
Good deal then :-)
Bedtime, catch ya tomorrow.
Night!
Morning, everyone. :)
Oooh - a Jake blog! He said that,
How did THAT happen?!
There's this Spanish guy on Twitter also recommending SPC, F1M, and the Big Picture. Good job! :D
There is a bizare phenomenon here where you can get higher viewing figures on BBC1 for some reason...
But all credit tot hose guys they have been doing a stunning job, as much as people dont like EJ and DC I think they make a decent pairing and the whole show comes together really well.
I am amazed that the forum gets a million viewers per outing, i think that must be a record for a TV show which isn't on a channel.
I am sure if they tallied the people watching it though less legitimate means overseas as well as online they must get that many again.
Indeed - and you're right - imagine if they counted everyone watching it through JTV and UStream - they'd get an extra million!
I belive they dont even count the people watching on their own website!
What are F1M & The Big Picture?
F1M is the F1 minute which gets put out by MrsC every day, and the big picture is part of that site too...
So its all good for Sidepodcast!
http://www.f1minute.com/
http://www.f1minute.com/category/f1-big-picture/
Who was it out of interest? :D
Ahhh, I knew about F1M but not the Big Picture...
Thanks
#sidepodspace update
STS-128 launch Take Three - If it gets any earlier it will be late at night
The third attempt to launch the shuttle will be on Friday morning at 12:22am Eastern / 5:22am UK. I think NASA has finished using ones in its times and has switched to twos.
There is no other info at this time but as soon as I have it I will pass it on.
I had one hour of sleep last night and I am still wide awake. I have no idea why. I suppose I should go to bed and try to sleep.
search for sidepodcast on Twitter - it'll come up. :D i just found him when i was searching for the #f1 tag.
I'm sure Alonso would've appreciated his loose tyre in Hungary being THIS behaved. Looks like it came from V8 Supercars a few years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvDfnrwDFzE
I'm not sure if anyone noticed but yesterday's Jake blog had a link to Ollie's site in it :) Go Ollie!
well done ollie!! How awesome!
Feel absolutely rotten today :( got little sleep and this cold is driving me mad.. Working in the freezer room today so via two combined = uh oh
I can't find the link to Ollie's?
Ah, it was in the article before last... ;)
Following on from Toyota not approving the budget for F1 next year yet, here is a story about Toyota suspending a production line. It also mentions Toyota plans to cut vehicle production by up to 40%. Is it only a matter of time before they withdraw from F1 then?
Oh, and morning all ;)
TBH, I don't think so. F1 is the smokescreen for what they're doing. When they pull out of F1, it's obvious something's wrong, so if they stay in F1, it's less likely that we'll notice.
It also helps that their chairman is a motorsport fan, according to Joe.
The Honda chairman was also a motorsport fan and he got voted out so they could pull out. Ford too.
But the Toyota chairman just came in this year, right? And he's a Toyoda - so from the family. Lemme look for the article.
Ah, here it is:
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns21713.html
True, I forgot that. But the board has to approve it, so it's still uncertain...
Gosh I can't believe its Wednesday night already and practice at Spa is but two days away. Quickest week ever! It feels like Rubens won yesterday!
I need Pandas today :(
Panda cup? or perhaps a baby panda bowl?
Hi all.
Aloha
Morning.
Top of the day to you. :D
How are we all today? What's the weather like where you are?
Rained like Cats and Dogs last night (just after I came in from my run) but today it's nice again!
Dark. Dark is a weather.
It's also pretty dark here, actually...
On a racing game it is ;)
Does that make light a weather too?
work is over for the day, but I will also be in dark when the train comes up to the surface. It was beautiful this morning in the sun on the platform...
purple is a fruit.
great! And you?
Pretty good, all things considered.
Understood :)
Do you need Pandas too?
Always!
purple is Ricky-Lee Coulter's favourite colour. She said son on Rove. I just thought you should know.
Who doesn't like the one eyed, one horned, flying, purple people eater?
just try and tell me that song isn't stuck in your head now. Go on, tell me. I won't believe you!
PS. It's nearly Spaaaaaaaaaa!
Don't. I'm not ready.
rubbish. You're aching for it with every fibre of your being
Neither am I - no Driver Consistency Analysis yet (haven't even started) and no chance of a post on Look-How Bad-You-Are... That will have to wait until he is fired next week at least...
Hahaha. You're funny.
I sure hope he spends every day in the simulator this week. Have we heard any reports of how his neck held up?
I don't think he's said anything. But he probably wasn't going fast enough for it to be a problem.
It's a bit rainy but nothing too bad.
If that's all it takes then me and Scott should be given a go! Are you listening Ferrari? I could drive there overnight...
For those who want a panda but are only allowed a dog?
Wow. That's weird.
some of them are way, way more disturbing!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1208913/The-poodles-transformed-pandas-horses-snails-creative-grooming-dog-shows.html
Not good. I've broken my internet!!!
Noooooooooooooooooooooo
what's Finnish for noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!?
Oh no!
eiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!
Is it... nØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØ
I'll remember that. Being a Heikki fan, it could be useful :D :(
Occasionally it may depend on the circumstances. Because you declinate(?) no in Finnish. en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät but most of the time it's ei :)
stupid hard language to learn. Why can't no just be no!
Ross will be happy. Not only has his team secured funding, but I have it on a good source that he is going to be a grandfather.
It's decline... although not a common English word.
Well decline is a common English word, but not in that sense...
I tried to install a wireless router so I can comment from my bed (like Amy). We have to give the network administrator our MAC address and he let's us connect. So yesterday I gave him the MAC of my shiny new router. Tried to set it up but didn't work. Then I found where you can change the MAC of the router. I couldn't change it to the one of my computer because that wouldn't have helped (the MAC that's allowed to the Internet being the router's and all) but I changed it to my flatmate's computer and set it up in her room. Which worked! And then I connected my baby laptop to the router via wireless and it woked as well. And then I told the network administrator to change the MAC back for my room to the one of my desktop so I can try the same here or at least connect the old fashioned way to the Internet, which didn't work. And I have absolutely no idea why. :(
I have spoken English all my life and I never realised decline meant anything other than how I normally use it :D
thanks
As I think you might say...
"stupid hard language to learn. Why can't no just mean one thing!"
this has lead me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_language_noun_cases and I think "Maalaan talon. Auta maalaamaan talo!" is my favourite sentence ever. So many a's!
Kathi are you on linux or windows?
Good to hear. :)
He is having quite the week!
over here, 'ei' is a slang way of saying 'hi' or 'hey'. :D
linux
It started on a great note - let's hope it ends on a great note too - with a win! :D
Well now Bassano has finished drilling I might need to say that!
There are two MAC addresses on your computer... The computer MAC and the Wireless cards MAC... But if you are connecting directly you won't want the wireless MAC... But I'm not sure on Linux how you would tell the difference.
:D
easy my desktop doesn't have wireless :)
but I had that problem a few years ago with windows on my old laptop. Linux is much easier in that respect
Don't be silly. We don't share that letter with the Finnish people!
Well then... Ummm... I think I'm stuck...
Not sure how it's working if two devices have the same MAC.
we wouldn't want it anyway. We are trying to use as few letters as possible
Does the Fonz live in the Philippines?
At the moment the router and my flatmate's computer have the same MAC and that doesn't seem to cause any problems. In my room I just tried to connect my desktop via lan to the network as it used to be. I probably accidentally changed something fundamental. I was planning on a new install anyway maybe that can solve it.
The "next Mark Webber" has been given an F1 test.
Pshh, I'd rather have Hartley ;)
Nope. I blame it on txt (SMS) language. :D
Potential weather for Spa.
I saw him race in British F3 - it was shown here yesterday. He's pretty impressive, but I'm not sold on him - not yet, anyway.
how about Lääkäri määräsi väärää päänsärkylääkettä ?
This is the kind of news Brawn will like - although they'd appreciate a sunny Saturday, too. :D
ooooh dotty a's! Whats the Finnish word for umlaut :D
Really? 18 degrees is nowhere near the 30s we saw in Valencia.
So are we thinking that Williams are close to announcing a Renault deal but it's dependent on Red Bull moving to Mercedes?
18 deg is too cool for them though - and the circuit is fast and flowing. Expect Red Bull domination?
Typical of Williams to get the bum deal :(
18 would make me put my jacket on.
Better than Cosworth though!
Indeed it is!
Jacket on = Red Bull wins
Jacket off = Brawn wins?
True, but they're even worse in the wet. And if Brawn are confident that they've fixed their tyre woes, the cooler conditions shouldn't affect them as much as it used to.
Besides, have we ever gotten into the 30s at Spa? It's in the mountains!
Agreed.
What if it's my McLaren jacket? Or my purple one? :D :D
the dictionary says vokaalinmukaus never used it in Finnish lessons we always use hand gestures.
the sentence means: the doctor prescribed the wrong headache-medicine.
What about the slippers situation?
eiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!
Are they though? I remember reading they "understood them" better, but I don't believe they're fixed.
They had about as hot temperatures as they're going to get in Valencia, and Button was still nowhere.
for some reason, German words that translate into entire sentences seem so much easier to understand than Finnish ones :D
they are worn regardless of the weather, as long as I am inside my house :D
That was because he lost places at the start. Rubens was absolutely flying. Button's issue wasn't with the car - it was with his own performance.
As for the tyres, I remember reading something about the team ensuring it won't happen again, or something similar. Lemme see if I can find it.
Perhaps you're right. I do think they will be struggling again this weekend though. It's Red Bull's chance to capitalise.
I think they'll be second-best to RBR, but they should stay ahead of the rest. It'll be interesting to see if Jenson can get on the podium ahead of Kimi, Lewis, and most importantly, Rubens.
It's Red Bull's weekend I think...
I think Brawn will struggle, Kimi will do well and McLaren will be up there...
That said, perhaps they fell back a bit in pace relative to the rest of the grid? They were nowhere in Valencia, where they should've at least been able to score a couple of points.
That's also true, and if they're messing about with KERS, they might not be focusing on the right things.
Regarding the tyre temps, looks like you're right, Christine. Perhaps Brawn think they've found a solution but won't really know due to the testing ban until Spa?
Stupid testing ban. :)
Did we know that Grosjean works part time in a bank?
i haven't read back through the comments yet, but isn't that impossible?
what?
I think the biggest factor for Jenson is that different people look set to be winning races through the rest of the season rather than one team / driver dominating.
what makes you think the renault engine is a bad engine? it only blows up inside a RBR.
fact.
Preview quotes:
RG: I stayed in Valencia for a day to enjoy the city and get some rest before I went home to Geneva. Then on Tuesday I went back to work at the bank* to keep in touch with reality! I think it's important to continue like this as I enjoy working there and this routine has always worked well for me in the past.
*Romain works part-time at a bank in Geneva
eh?
what??
that's what I said.
awesome!
That'll favor him, but he needs to score more than he currently is, otherwise, that won't help him much.
Less grunt than a Merc?
I'm writing these comments from the back of a cab.
mac codes are vendor assigned. so your router would need to be made by the same manufacturer as your pc, and then they must've screwed up by selecting the same unique number for x2 products?
So he's fast AND smart AND knows how to make money?
I read that for the first time about a week ago, I believe the quote I read said "until recently" at the start though, implying that he had quit the job.
This is not what I understand about bankers.
really? after being retuned earlier in the year. i don't believe it.
ahh it was The "Mole"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/why-rookie-romain-grosjean-is.html
hahahaha. i have to say, while it's a fun thing to be doing. he really should be concentrating on f1, right?
:D Have you ever seen a poor banker?
hehe. well, different drivers do different things to keep themselves pre-occupied with something other than F1. it just so happens that romain's is... banking? :-/
yup. met a few too.
really? i've never seen one here in my entire life.
maybe it's the culture?
I live with one, although that might be the fact she is a serious boozehag so 90% of her nice bank salary goes on wine
did they not bring about the downfall of your economy too? or was that just ours?
every single day. that said, the recent recession wasn't so bad for us - there's wasn't that far for us to fall from.
he is allowed to do that with that hairstyle ?
oh yeah... Sorry about that ;)
Oh? Maybe I didn't express myself well. The router projects the MAC address of my flatmate's computer to the 'outside' network. Is that possible?
ahh, it helps if i read the start of the conversation. you can spoof MAC addresses no problem, they're not like IP addresses, they don't really do anything other than identify a piece of hardware.
not sure i understand this bit though...
was it bankers or those who kept looking the other way for X years while the bubble was growing bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger ?
:D
It was bankers.
yep. that bit makes sense now. i can't fathom why your desktop isn't working though?
knowing some I am inclined to agree :-) but they did have some partners in crime ...
hehe. in fairness i'd have done the same. however, i do know a couple of bankers who used to be well off, and now are significantly well off.
i guess it depends on what romain is doing though. is he just working behind the desk stamping cheques?
damnit.
that doesn't make sense either. i'm off back to bed.
that is the quote I have been using for years when the bank people were offering me this and that banking product :-)
:)
Maybe it's a slightly different spec to the engine in the Renault?
I would rather have a Merc Engine anyway - then I would be able to add KERS if I wanted to...
it's not. it's the same engine.
renault had kers at the start of the year?
Do you think they might bring it back if RBR do?
And they abandoned it. McLaren embraced it and proved it. Brawn were offered it but couldn't because it would make the car overweight.
I think given a choice I would go for Merc.
without wanting to get too philosophical about it...
The bankers are basically just doing their jobs which is to make as much money as possible.
If we don't want what happened to happen again then somebody better change the rules. It's the lack of political will to do so which causes the problem.
This isn't a defence of the bankers they did stupid things which were irresponsible. But basically they are like people who's job it is go go an play in the casino all day and when they run out of money they just come back for more. They can't fail because whenever they do somebody got some more money to give them.
If there's no consequence for faliure and therefore only upside why wouldn't you keep going?
It's a political problem. But it's the bankers fault for exploitingthe current system.
Same as the expenses row.
they are said to have been considering it too according to autosport.
That sounds a little too much like a Nuremberg defence for my liking. The culture is rotten to the core and nothing has changed :(
not sure. renault have one of the smallest budgets in f1, they've lost a major sponsor and might be trying to sell the team. none of that says "let's spend more money on kers".
am wondering if the deal with williams would see renault run williams' flywheel system next year?
and to bring it back to F1 the double diffusers.
I think we would have got much better racing this year if the FIA had said, "look yes well done you found a loophole, what you did was technically legal, but not what we meant to happen. So we'll let your current results stand and the next two races, but after that it's banned."
we have much more overtaking if this had happened.
agreed.
the problem is it's a global political problem. rather than a local one, and worldwide regulation changes take for ever. assuming they can happen at all.
really? i doubt it.
well that's my point. They Are just following orders etc. But nothing's changed now at the top except they've proven that if they take on too much risk the government will save them.
So do I. Kazuki said on the Williams podcast that if they ran Spa at the beginning of the year, Eau Rouge would not be taken flat out. He thinks that it will be this week. IIRC that means we are already back to the aero levels of last year - so it's a major fail for the OWG.
not necessarily true. it's as much a technology problem as a people problem. a significant percentage of banking is electronic, automated and running 24/7. the boundaries of execution aren't restrictive enough and were designed for a previous era.
as alex says, the price of failure isn't great enough either. the tax payer is now expected to bail every mistake out.
Nuremberg defence for computers: "I was only doing what my program told me to"?
I think a lot of trouble for the overtaking is the dirty air from the diffuser. I think the KERS was more effective earlier in the season before the other teams got their defussers.
sorry, i was responding to:
"The culture is rotten to the core and nothing has changed :("
i don't think it's rotten to the core.
rotten to the core dump ;)
i don't agree. this years aero rules are major fail in every respect. you can't pick out the diffusers as the problem solver, because non-diffuser cars couldn't be followed in melbourne either.
the regs didn't work. none of them.
:)
I do, when the bankers are allowed to run free, the bosses get off scot-free because the taxpayer bails them out while still giving themselves bonuses, and the former finance minister is allowed to continue as Prime Minister even though he failed at restraining the bankers...
Too much wing, not enough reliance on mechanical grip. It can be done in one-make single seater series...
It's not rotten to the core. It's an extremely odd profession.
For example I was working on a trading floor in London on September 11th. Several people I knew died in the twin towers.
What are the people in the bank supposed to do? Morn their friends, down tools and hope everyone else does or should they trade?
Sadly they have to trade because if they don't the pension you've worked hard for your whole life is now worthless because somebody was being respectful.
in this I mean somebody who doesn't work at a bank but who's pensions are held at a bank.
i'm not gonna try and convince you. but you are of course aware that you don't work in finance, so presumably you're only taking on board what you've read in the media (daily mail maybe?).
the people i know who do this (or used to do this), are not rotten to the core, did not get off scot free and didn't give themselves massive bonuses.
not sure you read my previous comment, but it's a worldwide problem.
it's not a local issue that local government can solve on it's own, less we do a north korea and opt out of the world.
you fire one man, you might make a couple of people happy, but you haven't solved the issue. you've found a scape goat.
just ask davey ryan.
Can we opt out of the world by ourselves on Rockall, pls?
hehe. no. we don't make anything, grow anything or have a tourist industry.
we're kinda like switzerland in that respect.
I think the swiss make those clocks...
Ooooh and don't forget toblerone!
Come see Rockall, it's kinda... rocky?
I want to go to Switzerland!
There's not a lot of room is there?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b7/Rockall-photo.JPG/300px-Rockall-photo.JPG
Come to Rockall - you'll be amazed how small it is!
I'm hoooooome :D
Longest.2.days.EVER.
I shall give you the low-down in a minute :D
Come to Rockall - it's not always got a wave smashing against it
I think you should do a dance while you do it so it is a low-down ho-down
Come to Rockall - it's not on any maps!
see, you're picture makes it look smaller than it really is...
while listening to Miley Cyrus so its a low-down ho-down hoe-down throw-down?
come to rockall, it's bigger than you think:
http://www.cifr.it/Rockall 102 June 2005.jpg
come to rockall, it's bigger than you think!
ooh it is too!
oh how i've missed you all ;)
I went through a contraflow earlier and was like..NO!!! DONT DO IT!!
I'm pretty sure, with a bit of jiggery pokery, we could get a hotel sorted.
Well you are right about the media but I normally go for the BBC over the Daily Mail TBH ;)
And I do feel sorry for most of the bankers - but not those who are in power or allowed this system to prevail...
A bit like this: http://www.vkblog.nl/pub/mm/tempest/39529/Image/Rockall3.jpg
The only flat bit is 11 ft by 4 ft.
Rockall... Mr C could lie down... that must mean it's pretty big!
I had never heard of this famous rock until today. Sidepodcast. Educational.
NZ doesn't have famous rocks, but we did have an iceberg. We sheared a sheep on it.
OMG I am embarrassed to be a Kiwi now!
I am embarrassed that sheep became "famous" in the first place
Hold on... Nick Hancock is going to go and live on rockall in 2011. I thought sidepodcast owned it fair and square.
Goodness... you think it's all over...
Longest Week of my life:
http://jonwaldock.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/jons-guide-to-the-mayhem-that-is-results-day/
It just makes the sheep jokes continue :(
WHAT?
Gavin... Apparently the Danes have a claim on Rockall too!
http://www.rockall2011.com/index.html
oh oh oh I just found the blog I wrote at the time it all happened:
THIS SHEEP. IT'S JUST A SHEEP. If a human didn't cut their hair in that long they wouldn't get to meet the Prime Minister and get paid $10,000 to appear at corporate seminars.
CORPORATE SEMINARS!
What can a sheep offer to the business world?
and my friend commented
Apparently if you sat through the HOLMES SPECIAL of the shearing, you were rewarded with the spectacle of Paul snapping at some kids behind him "Don't wave! The people at home find it very annoying when you wave!" The moral of the story being, next time you see something as stupid as a sheep being shorn live on national television AT PRIMETIME you should watch it, because something unintentionally hilarious will probably happen.
Then it's clearly Danish then!
And he's doing it all for chairty too, which makes it really hard to complain.
You have a blog?
How are we all today?
This conversation looks both exciting and interesting but i'm a missing a little too much sleep to truly understand it!
From the deep dark archives of my 2004 Livejournal :D
woah you sound busy, and even though I have no idea what half of that jargon means (what on earth is 'clearing' anyway?) I am tired just reading it. And thankful getting into uni in NZ was super, super easy.
It's what people do when they do rubbish in their exams :D all the places that arent filled can be accessed through clearing
ahh ok. I thought you were doing teaching but obviously you changed your mind. Motorsport sounds like fuuuuun.
I'm going to do teaching as a post-grad course, the motorsport is one that is just tooooo good to turn down
fair enough, the people I know who did a 3 year teaching degree had a lot less fun than the people I know who did a 3 year anything-else-degree and then a 1 year postgrad teaching diploma:D
The only reason the rules were so open was because of the massive political contributions coming out of individuals in the city...
HAving said that i went through university wanting to work in the city, and now i cant because it all went wrong...
In anycase good afternoon everyone, still yet to find a shop which sells F1 Racing. Are you guys sure it hasnt gone out of print?
fact? or generalisation?
hehe. print died?
I like subscription because its cheaper and I don't have to leave the house. I wouldn't have a clue where to buy a copy!
Probably best decribed as an 'obstacle'
Its hard to know how big the problem really is in terms of pressure on the governement, but its clear the rules were left open and the money kept roling in
I havent read the UK version in years... Which may be due to the fact noone stocks it.
I cant see them attracting many new subscribers if people cant read the magazine in the first place as its so poorly distributed
There is A WH Smith not too far away which stocks pretty much every magazine in the country... I need another excuse to go there as the parking is pretty pricey at £1 per hour and its a bit of a drive....
Ridiculous question... what else can i buy when i go to town?
Only from Smiths or are other shops available?
I still have no idea...
Lots of other shops.
The town is Staines (of Ali G fame) has pretty much all major high street brands apart from currys
It was on Page 1. :P
http://twitter.com/Luisjoset
I could go to Woking as well, its closer but parking costs even more at £1.40 an hour!
Hmm. Buy a new t-shirt.
oooh i could become like alex and buy collared shirts :P
Coool :)
actually you have reminded me that we have this shop who sell every magazine I have ever heard of and then some. I bought my dad some UK MG magazine for Christmas that he'd never heard of before. Plus they have free wifi so when I had no home I stayed there most of the day :D
hehe, my one isnt that hardcore, it just has a bigger magazine rack than most ;)
so...many..magazines...on...caravans...
Perhaps i should buy one and a running magazine and make a comparison as to which is worthwhile? :P
for caravans I recommend this one, because not only is it about caravans, its practical.
I used to read Runners World because a subscription kept turning up in our mailbox for someone who doesn't live at our house. It was quite interesting, and I hate running.
what have i missed?
you are an "Excelente podcast"
ooh. didn't see that. nice.
:D
hehe.
better thank him, then. ;)
Has Ted News been reported?
are you collecting them for a museum?
how do you know so much about twitter, yet don't have an account?
which fake f1 driver are you journeyer?
hehehe, no i am just preparing for winter ;)
:D
And also Sober!
yes! why make one when you have the power of search! ;)
hmmm... :D
Twitter search? I hate it...
because without one you can't watch a Finn play cricket?
:P
I am yet to find this feature?
why? it's pretty good, actually.
you don't remember Amy's foray into cricket on Melbourne Friday?
The fact i couldn't find the guy who posted about sidepodcast suggests it must have some pretty big defficiencies
I have no idea why but it misses stuff
Ah i do, but i wasnt here then.
She was about a foot away from lewis if i recall correctly...
Common sense is coming to the world, one country at a time... 1st up Samoa
:P
i guess. but with an account you could use tweetdeck to search. and then you could group and filter too (take note nick).
I usually leave a tab open with #f1 search results. It just came up there, surprisingly. :D
oooh... i'm just lazy. haha! :D probably also goes some way to explain why i'm not in facebook, either...
Thats what i have been using, but when i couldnt find Spanish dude on there i searched on the twitter site this morning and still got nadda.
Twitters rubbish, from now on, people who i don't follow don't exist.
Nice! Ted linked to an FOM video on YouTube? From their DVD, no less? Tsk, tsk... :P :D
what did you search for? it came up right away when i searched for sidepodcast.
hehe. people i block don't exist.
:D
I dont block anyone, if they wish to hear the pearls of wisdom it is not my place to stop them...
Sidepodcast. Twitter main site no longer exists.... People who I dont follow dont exist, so clearly this guy doesn't exist ;)
It's the future!
wifi in a magazine shop? eh?
i use it so that i don't have to hear them.
they also have coffee
Has JA's latest post been mentioned?
They've ruled out Bourdais and Piquet apparently:
And JA is also talking about a young driver program. Given how Ferrari works (always hiring proven experienced drivers), I think this may be a bit of a poisoned chalice. But I do admit that this Badoer situation shows that they need one.
Ah, unfortunately nobody has become that interested in me...
Whats this i hear about RG working in a bank and conveniently going on holiday whilst he is making his F1 debut?
mmmmm coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I like coffeeeee and wifi... but why do they have to clutter up the place with magazines? ;)
he's sooo over the tennis ;)
ahh to give you something to read and then put back and not actually buy.
As I was explaining the other day... Massa and Kimi are former drivers from the Ferrari program at Sauber.
I have 3 categories for James Allen posts.
Informative, Speculative and James Allen. This post defiantly falls into category 3
the have a young driver program already.
RG is in F1?! I thought he was just on vacation! :P
Ahhhh, you mean Romain... :D Poor RG - first he has to share his name with Mr. Garros, now he has Mr. Grosjean to share it with...
I think you should rename category 3 to GET IN THERE
:)
Well, they had one, when Jean Todt was around. That only produced Raikkonen and Massa - which to be fair, shows that it did work. But if there's an Alonso or a Vettel out there who's better than what they have, they'll automatically go for that over their own stable.
hehe, maybe i should shout it as i file stuff in that bin :P
:D
who are the young drivers they keep sending around maranello once a year then?
the ones who are soooo good they break lap records and are never heard from again?
i dunno. there was three or four last year. f3 drivers maybe?
ahhh, bortolotti. but JA seems to completely ignore him here. from what i understand, that was just a one-off test with no long-term guarantees?
i think what ferrari need. are better test/reserve drivers.
I realised that I missed out something earlier... When Mr C was suggesting that the rear diffuser wasn't the only problem for overtaking.
I agree it isn't the only problem... What I was suggesting in clarifying the rules and giving the teams two races to deal with the clarified rules was a thought about how many more of these issues could be dealt with. As tricks and issues came to light after the rule shift the FIA could have reacted in a slow and measured way to plug the gaps in the rules.
As for the diffuser I think it still is the largest of the problems this season, and has been getting worse. I remember several sidepodcasters (including Mr C praising the OWG in Australia) - but I may be wrong.
Here's Ted this week:
From: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/ted-kravitz-the-european-gp-fr.html
badoer was a very good tester, i think. otherwise, ferrari wouldn't have kept him so long. that said, he's not a very good racer - at all. a young driver program for ferrari would need a junior race team to make it work. i imagine it would something like - from the lower formulae, they become a Ferrari reserve driver, then a racer in the junior team, then they get called up to the race team (kinda like massa). but if massa and kimi had sauber, who can Ferrari work with now?
i bloody hope you're wrong. this years cars a vile and the OWG suck.
At least they're admitting there's a problem, and the FIA and FOTA are working together (for once) to fix it.
They hope they haven't decided to attack the cars with the ugly stick again...
In effect, I think all they need to do to make them un-ugly is to widen the rear wing back to 2008 dimensions.
Question is, will it solve the problem of overtaking or make it worse?
I may have been slightly
drunkhungover in Australia... There was a lot of suggestion near the beginning of the race that it had helped overtaking. It did... for a while. I suspect the DDD may have ruined that to some degree.
we suggested before we saw the race that overtaking was improved? you're confusing us with the autosport forum, sir
Also, it's Australia. Nothing counts.
it didn't? melbourne was a crash fest as per usual. the second race was wet and bahrain was rubbish.
i didn't and hasn't helped in the slightest.
It also worked in Malaysia - I saw more passes there than there have been for ages. But it got less and less effective as the season passed.
the second race started dry - and there was lots of overtaking before any rain fell.
bahrain was a bit rubbish, yes.
*takes a sidepodpitstop to change his nose as its being a pain in the backside*
I hate rubbish colds!!!!!!
Well no... you said, "so overtaking improved?" and Jon Waldock said, "looks like it has, I hate it when the FIA are right".
I interpreted it as you saying overtaking was improved... as I say I had only had about 2 hours sleep at the time.
it ****** it down?
how do you change your nose? ;)
That was my memory
i hope i didn't mean that. i've hated the new regs since they were introduced.
they're stupid and the people who suggested them are stupid. i despise everything about them (including the silly movable wing).
just for the record, like.
as i said, there was tons of overtaking before any rain fell. when it fell, they were busier spinning off than passing each other.
like mr potato head man! :D
Phone wont let me quote.. Boo to phones.
the movable wing didn't work at all. well, i do remember rubens adjusting it in australia to minimize the effect on his damaged wing, but it's not used regularly.
china?? how many passes did you see there>
:D You can quote on the iPhone? ;)
a lot too - not as many as malaysia, but many. but it did rain.
I don't even remember the race let alone the overtakes. I couldn't even tell you who was on the podium.
It's amazing how much rubbish I keep in my memory, theres no room left for F1.
i worry about the opposite - i know so much about F1, i worry if i have enough space for the important stuff. :D
the regs have never worked. the ddd has little bearing on it.
the loophole shouldn't have been left open (OWG fail), but even so, i don't believe the racing is significantly worse as a result. it's been rubbish all year.
I remember it was very wet with big sploshy puddles and vettel won and Webber overtook Button
There was more overtaking last year... I think.
How is that possible?
hehe. significant moments in china...
- vettel won
ummmmm. yup that was it.
maverick did a post that proved it recently.
i really have no idea?
Funnily enough if you search on the playground for overtake the first post that comes up is Australia 2009:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/playground/search.php?s=overtake
wiki tells me he was followed by Webber and Button. Once I read it I was like 'ohhh thats right' but I couldn't have told you that even if you bribed me with money. or chicken.
boxed chicken?
Can we give the FIA a $100 million fine?
hehe
ooh. it's almost Friday....do I dare two weeks in a row? Last week was disappointing....
Today at work someone came in from their lunch break proclaiming "McDonalds have new burgers!" and my motto in life is 'try every new product because if you don't you might miss something amazing' so I had a "Mighty Angus" for dinner
bringing the racing into disrepute?
i blame pat, rory and paddy. they were paid to solve the problem. the fia implemented their ideas.
i remember webber and button having to tough it out for 2nd for a while.
Pat has a lot of different racing series to follow so it's a bit mean to...
Oh you don't mean Pat W ;)
:)
...must avoid temptation to go to burger king...
Is it called Burger King in NZ?
Indeed. I call it Burger King here and people look at me funny and go "you mean Hungry Jacks?"
no. no I don't. That name is dumb.
hehe... too right!
The Angus is a Burger King thing here
Of course not! Wait, hang on, isn't Pat a Postman? :D
I went to Hungry Jacks to have a burger with yummy cheese but I couldn't finish it so I glad wrapped it.
Absolutely. BK rocks!
f1 engineer (says he).
Tasty cheese?
you'd fit right in here.
I think it's due a rebrand.
I still cant believe they just call it tasty, its nuts, the leading brand doesn't have the best name either....
Just a quick note, I was on Youtube (bank rolling USF1) has anyone seen the Hitler-Fota video?
Yup. :D twas funny.
I love the line, "It's okay, Alonso already drives a tank"
Alexander Wurtz....
I am off to continue the F1 Racing quest.
See ya laters troublemakers...
inspired!!
I may have fallen asleep on the sofa...whoops
at 4:30 in the afternoon?
i wa up at 4.30am, spent 4.30 hours in the car and have had a very busy few days
Nothing wrong with a good ol' afternoon nap.
Darn 'tootin!!
(that means yes)
Beans and Chilli for lunch again?
ahhh - i usually have my siestas earlier in the day - usually from 1-3 (work permitting, of course).
Internet problem is solved
what was wrong?
I will not tell, no form of torture can make me!
Did you forget to plug in your computer?
Afternoon all
There are two sockets. TWO!!!
wrong socket, then? :P
I would laugh except there is a sidepodpanel recording on this site where I had my mic in the headset socket and the headset in the mic socket. One plug and socket is green and the other is pink. So I understand the problem.
Will be going soon. But before I do, does anyone know when the PF Quiz returns from its break?
ahhhhh. had been taxing me all day. was even discussed in the office.
wonder if i should pass this info on?
I haven't heard anything. If I see Mav or Jackie around tonight I will ask
Thanks. Off to bed for me - good night!
Night Journeyer
Just had a 10-minuter on the train ;)
Just found this on the comments of Jakes blog...
After the embarrassing own goal with irresponsible tabloid-like handling of Massa's sensitive situation in Hungary, yet another piece of shocking tv presenting. Yes I'm talking about Mr Brundle on the grid - once more a disgrace. Arrogant, smug, disrespectful, all the national traits put together. You know, that feeling that 'we OWN the place so sod everyone else'. Congratulations & great job comments aplenty in here I see - for jumping the queue.
So well done mate, absolutely superb. It worked out well so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow in the bus or the bank and see what happens and if I get praised too at the end. Fortunately I understand that bbc's f1 signal is received widely across the globe so you can get all the acclaim you deserve.
However my favourite is the comment below it..
i can't believe eddie dressed himself today
And,
Hi Jake, I thought the whole BBC team did very well this weekend and the "Did EJ swear?" sketch was brilliant real time thinking, he should have a 10 sec penalty for trying to hide his ice lolly.
Ah, don't get yourself worked up that way about my computer problems it is ALWAYS something silly like that.
do you want to die?
nuff said ;)
I have F1 racing, but going outside has made me fuming angry. I am going to go and read it while i break stuff.
it's scary out there.
no idea how legit this is, but:
"I have just had it from an insider that A1GP will be go for season five - rejoice all you fans the confirmation will be announced soon"
aha :D
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77998
Renault are thinking of running KERS at Monza. Looks like it is not just Williams who are thinking of dusting it off
Evening all
hi pat.
Plug alert: http://www.f1minute.com/2009/08/26/26-aug-09-renault-considering-bringing-kers-back/
what?
what??
Are they sure they aren't confusing him with someone else?
Hollow it out.
Genius!
I know Flav is tight fisted butthat is ridiculous
Evening! The working girl returns....
Okay wait. That came out wrong. You know what I mean :P
it wouldn't be all rock then though?
rocksome?
aha, working feel good? or wish you had time off again?
Hi Alison and Pat
:D :D
We know what you mean but we won't judge you
Evening. Ha! :-)
(much)
Shh. You can't tell from the outside.
Yeah pretty good. Good to go and be productive. I'm knackered though!!
The top needs to be flattened anyway to fet a helicopter to land on top. It is a long way from civlisation and there is no way on and off most of the year
I'm not sure if helped overtaking, it may have done a bit in Aus. One thing it did do was close up the cars over last year.. but that has since been negated, IMO. Needs someone to do an analysis.
Submarine docking port.
how deep are you digging?
Not saying. You can't build a
secret hidehotel giving away that sort of information.:D
Hah :-) :-)
I've too been busy trying to fix IndyCar.
More right turns required
Afternoon folks
are you a working boy?
Evening...
Burger King is superior to McD in every department.
I'm pretending I didn't see that.
Especially prices... the prices are alot more superior....
and thats why i go to McD
you gets what you pays for ;-)
It needs someone who is not employed by the teams to come up wit comething radical. Everyone knows the problem is aerodynamics so keep hacking away aero devices till the loss of drag a car experiences followin another car is more important than the loss of downforce. It is as simple as that.
The other factor is circuits. 25 corners in 3 miles is not going to allow overtaking. Spa has something like 17 corners in 5 miles and a long long run uphill to a tight corner then a long run down hill to the Bus Stop. It's no co-incidence that great overtaking moves have taken place there.
I like it.
grrr... too angry to write anything ...grrrr
Lets put it this way. No one will be allowed on without a spade.
still?
how bad can outside be?
:P
Hi BC
Is this about F1 Racing? How hard can it be? Go to a supermarket, pick up magazine, pay, leave...
i think nick needs a kindle.
Rubbish. McChicken sammiches are great and that barbecue sauce may be even better than mint sauce. #sorrylukeh
I am stewing.
It is making me angrier.
and a sidepodhug ;)
i think he got a copy, but being outside made him angry
Harness the force of your anger and have a rant
or go to a newsagents/railway station/airport/motorway service station/petrol station///
Sorry, but this line is just classic:
Clearing sounds like an incredibly traumatic experience to go through though, so well done on getting something you wanted.
I was briefly amused by the tale of Jake meeting Bernie.
But soon back to being angry
because winter is coming?
Mr C / Christine:
I have sent you an email with some thoughts on my first year on SPC
Feel free to use or broadcast if you feel appropriate
Flame-grilled all the way.
Ah. Tourists.
Yeah, it was quite hilarious. I'm glad it was pointed out to me
Natives
Food time I think, back in a bit.
I was just thinking about A1GP today - it's very close to the start of the season and there has been no news at all!
BBQ sauce makes me wanna hurl, though I do like a good Zinger Tower
As for McD's, BK wipes the flame grilled floor with 'em
If they are anything like the natives of where I am, they are all old, slow and doddery and get in the way. They can't help it, but that doesn't make it less annoying.
Except for service... well here in Odense anyway!
Huh, I was earlier
Home now
[though now confused]
I've discovered why there are so many Nascar drivers...
They train them young
You missed Alison's announcement that she is now a working girl then her immediate realisation that it could be misconstrued
he drives like christine.
i'm not sure who thats insulting too....
In real life or in games?
Can I have my 6 minutes back?
in games!
Ah ha
I just call it "employed"
Just checkin' :)
In case you missed it earlier...
if i was that kids dad...before he got too confident and cocky...i'd set it to hard and see how he did..
I agree with this statement
All received, thank you :)
Talking of work, I woke up this morning to a text from my colleague
"Wakey wakey"
15mins after our official start time, 45 past the unofficial.
Doh!
Bed to car in 11mins
Luckily, I had showered, ironed & prepared lunch before going to bed
A new record I think
Soothing bath and an early night for me, I think
I can't believe you sat through 6 minutes of it. I stopped after about a minute once I convinced myself he was actuaaly steering
how old are you?
I fast forwarded to see if there were any massive pile ups
Same here.
ouch
Most mornings I have to iron my shirt before putting it on, cos I can't be bothered doing all the prep before bed
Too old to change, young enough not to care ;)
hehe.
Look who's giving away their race suit!
I was about to say "why dosent he just burn it?" but then realised what a stupid thing that would be to do to a fireproof suit...
Well, he won't be needing it anytime soon
He may have already tried ;)
I really think there should be a "who ARE you?" button for twitter follower requests
sounds like what you need is facebook?
I want one of those for skype
really?
Made these graphs earlier for another forum and thought I would share them.
I cannot believe how awful Badoer did - he was at least a second slower than his teammate and very inconsistent (something which I thought was the opposite of a test driver)
Badoer vs. Select other drivers
Badoer vs. Select other drivers - Zoomed in
Badoer Vs. Raikkonen
Badoer Vs. Raikkonen - Zoomed in
Also, note how fast and Consistent Raikkonen was!
Good stuff. Presumably those big spikes in the 2nd stint were because people were lapping him?
:P
I got bored of the flying sheep and then my sister and nieces joined, I knew it was time to move on :)
I'm not sure - there are a heck of a lot of spikes and 4 seconds a lap is a lot to give away just to let someone by!
We all know of Kathi's immense Skype caller ID finding skills. Her address book must need an external back-up solution
I had the lap graph of him compared with Lewis and Rubens as my dektop background for a bit. So pretty
For me it was by a very long way the worst performance by any driver in the last 20 years
Thanks! ;)
You made one?
I just look at their profile, read a page or two of their tweets..
Aww, I thought you meant the one I just made and put on droop.io :(
Who-who, who-who?
4 seconds isn't so much for a rookie, which is effectively what he is until he knocks the rust off.
Unless he's as rusty as a Lancia half his age
those are pretty too. Not soo pretty but still pretty ;)
There are a lot of factors that affect lap times of slower drivers that don't affect the guys at the front such as traffic, being lapped etc. I would be interested to see the weight corrected times of the two Ferrari drivers up to Raikkonen's first stop before the race gets shuffled. It would also be interesting to see Alguesuari and Grosjean vs Badoer weight corrected until the first of them stops. That should give a clear indication of performance.
Can I see the graph you are talking about?
One is a derive through penalty and there was at least one spin.
Weight corrected? How can I do that? Steven, I haven't even done driver consistency yet and there's 3 days until the next race! My wife doesn't even know what I look like anymore!!!
Was this lukeh's doing?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/kovalemmingf-jpg
If so, i want to hug him.
If only he was motivated he could have been on the podium in a car that is definitely not the best.
The Drive Through must be the one not as tall as the two pit stops. Typically a driver wouldn't lose 4 seconds on one lap just to let a guy through?
No I don't think you can. You need a autosport online subscription and if I remember correctly you don't have one?
You have to ask?
How do you get your graphs into your blog? Is it PrintScreen / paste into something like Paint, and save as jpg? That's what I used to do... is there a more efficient way?
Give her chocolate. It will be OK.
You know starting weights, fuel consumption and what lap they pitted on. What else do you need?
I don't - but I know which one you mean now ;)
You make a good point.
Time. I NEED MORE TIME DAMMIT! :(
The cost in time of the weight
This is Badoer. There is no "typically" with Badoer.
understood. i prefer twitter because it doesn't have a "who the chuff are you option".
the way i see it, a blogger wouldn't ask that before letting me read their thoughts, why should a tweeter?
Not if he does it in a sensible manner but this guy probably hasn't been on track with another car close to him in years
You have sidepodtime
I never understood why not. Those lap charts/times/gaps graphs are great and on top you get forix and it's not that expensive.
Good point. As I'm not a blogger - I just care more about spam
It really is a hatred of mine
I just never got round to it...
Gavin, you need a job with a longer train journey :)
some followers its quite obvious if they are spammers/they type to be.
agreed. everyone should have an autosport subscription, if only because they're frightened to death of letting the magazine rest in peace.
do it now.
understood. i gave up on email because of it.
it's easy :)
What can I get from FORIX that I can't get from the FIA Media Centre though?
stats from 1950-2009.
things from the race before last?
:D
Loads
i think they designed forix, just for gavin. i can't believe he doesn't have a subscription...
OK, I'll do it next week when I get paid then. And GP+ too ;)
which day? we can remind you.
I know, the thing is huge. I've been using it for years.
They are even on Twitter now posting the pole winner, race winner, fastest lap-setter and top 3 in points for all kinds of races (although it does get a bit overwhelming).
No need - I will know as we get payslips!
Will it be helpful to Project TooMuchRubberGoat?
They give all i want away for free.
I prefer to buy the paper rag when their is something worth reading in it
All sorts of F1 stats... every position in every session, not just the races.
Circuit pages showing the winner of each race - and that does mean each race, not each F1 GP.
Driver pages showing their championship position for pretty much every championship they have entered.
It was always planned to be lifted extensively from FORIX ;-)
Then I must join then!
i only buy the paper one for the national and club racing news :)
By the time the paper one arrives in Denmark it is out of date!
I've had a subbie to the paper one for 11 years and I hate disappointing people, I can't bring myself to call them.
Good, this is the graph I was talking about.
I use a yahoo addy purely for sign-ups & authentications. I get very little spam on my others
me likes :)
Reminding people on this site doesn't work. Joe writing competition
We don't get them anymore, all online
But a paper sub gives you access to it?
http://www.autosport.com/subs/magazine.html
We are 'old fashioned'. Computers didn't have the Internet until 2004!
that isn't my issue with it.
as someone who used to have to send out a lot of official email, the domain frequently got blacklisted as a spam account (it wasn't spam, it was a just lot of email).
that meant people who needed the info couldn't get the info because the likes of microsoft were loosing it at the server level.
as a communication mechanism for content publishers, email is broken beyond repair.
hahah. it's on the calendar. we're too frickin' busy.
i gotta stop commenting so much.
I fear the same future for twitter :(
This is worth a mention. Nothing we haven't covered in discussions already, nice to see it mentioned somewhere else though - the recycling of press releases as original content:
http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/08/26/a-little-look-at-f1-media-sausage-making-f1-formula1/
Yes. I know. I have it.
twitter is broken by the 140 char limit. it's useless for anything beyond shameless self promotion.
By the way, if anyone hears of a Flash Mob tomorrow at Waterloo, don't worry. It'll probably be Nick, Giggles and I - Qik Streaming something inane but strangely compelling
F1B spend an awful lot of time quoting GMM stories.
of all the people who should keep quiet on that subject...
"At F1B, we work hard to find the original sources for any posts so you can see them. And a few of you make sure to keep us honest!"
hahhahahahahahahahh
hahahaha
ha
h..
Didn't know that..
This writer says he was recently become more active on F1B, perhaps he's trying to make a point to his fellow contributors...
Anyone else up for it by the way?
Which reminds me, I got a PM from Flibster the other day, must see if he responded
From Flibster:
I've had major surgery on my knee - cartilage being hacked about with, kneecap has been re-broken, other bits of bone broken and ground away. Generally, a not very nice procedure. Hopefully all should be ok so that I can be on crutches by October.
On the plus side - old company was so desperate to have me back they offered me a new position they created and I can still work from home. I no longer have to deal with customers! JOY!
Oh, and opiate based pain killers are an excellent way to pass the day. ;-)
TTFN
You are too creative for your own good
It's like interviewing Beaker from the Muppets - all "me me me me"
"I know there are many sites out there (F1-related as well as other sports and news sites) that just regurgitate others’ product (GMM, is it?) without offering any context at all. Boo to them."
that is just odd. the writer doesn't even read the site they write for?
ooooh
oh man :(
awesome :D
aha, :D
Wish him well from me :)
but that's all it's good for?
Will do
Ouch. Do wish him well.
No offence, but for a guy who's not that bothered about being here it seems odd that he keeps contacting us!
Not a nice way to spend your time.. hope it fixes itself soon
If he's on opiate-based painkillers he will be really enjoying himself!
He has had a really tough time of it with those injuries. I hope he is back on his feet soon.
He PM'd me on the wiki about a Kevin Smith event we had previously discussed
I asked him how things were
I think he's fallen out of love with F1, not SPC
It is micro-blogging. Talking about your opinion on things. It is supposed to be me-me-me.
Can you park this well? :D
To be fair I'd (we'd?) got that impression some time before he went..
That's not the impression I got.
he annoyed me over the nurburgring thing...
when he said he was going, we wished him well and took an interest. yet upon his return, we quizzed him about his adventures and the best we got was, it was:
"slippery"
i suspect all of us here would love to one day visit the ring, and any insight would've been appreciated. pictures, description anything. but he couldn't be bothered.
why should i take an interest in anything else his does?
from me too
Perhaps they used to. Perhaps they still do. I've just caught up on the last 5 days of their content in Google Reader and every 'news' item cited a credible source such as BBC, Autosport, or a team release. Either they've learned or I've caught a 'good' phase. I will keep an eye on them, thanks for the heads-up.
just commented asking the same. they used to be cool... back in 2007, then went very much downhill.
ah hang on, scratch that...
I just checked their SpeedTV.com source on a story and that's a GMM, so...
I am not good at Caption Competitions, but this must be a great target: http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/08/26/caption-contest-99/
quite.
Shame. Has potential. I'd already downloaded some of their podcasts, hadn't got around to listening to 'em yet and was looking forward to their perspective. Not so much now.
iPhone photo takers (and possibly iPod Touch soon too)
Beware of taking more than 10,000 pics on your device
wow, 9pm happened quickly...
Hehe, he's trying to crash into Bernie.
It's only 9pm!?! I've been up since 4.30am.
This is what Alex must be like
You'll sleep well tonight.
I'd planned to write lots of blogs tonight.. oops. Will get on that now.
Just keep faking it till Monza, I'm gonna make a mint when you win there. Kimi's already on board, I've got him in with Subaru for next year
ooh i willl so sleep well, i am going to sleep very soon
Make sure you post to Ollie's too. :)
Did that first, fairs fair ;)
i listened to their first one. they started a couple of months after us, but the show crossed my mental "1 hour barrier", so i never went back.
i'm sure they're fine really, but they are in no position to criticse others standards of journalism. not by a long shot.
Perfect.
Mr C: Did you get to check out the sponsorship message techniques?
I had no idea Speed were such bad offenders.. I mean I knew they used 'em, not to that extent... just got linked to a summary story of 9 pages in length all from "GMM Newswire".. instantly rendering a ton of US-based blogs a lot less credible.
huh?
on the "websites you can trust" blog post, they were on the trusted list until someone in the comments pointed out that 90% of what they write is rubbish.
the whole tv station thing sucks you in :)
Autoblog keep using GMM via F1 Live stories...
Memory of a Ferranti, this man ;)
Podcast sponsorship. This episode has been brought to you by...
Mac OS Ken, Simply Syndicated's Make It So, etc
I was told SPEED is just NASCARvision anyways...
One of the F1 apps uses them but they are decent enough to let you deselect them from a bunch of others
hehe.
ahh yes. i think it'll tie in with the new homepage... christine?
Chalk Talk is always worth it though, Steve Matchett [or something]
Hello.
hi.
I have still not yet worked out how to value a single episode of the podcast.
I think they'll be okay 'in person'. Will listen to a few.. if it is all "Speed.com said this.." I won't go back to them. The writer of that particular article says he's a former journo so I'm hoping that'll have a positive influence now he has a bigger role.
goodo. do let us know.
Ah yeah forgot about that!
European GP Chalk Talk
13mins
dans blog has all the best speed videos nowadays. unmissable.
SPC = Priceless :D
Will check out, thanks
I dont know i dont think people read blogs for news, more for opinion and debate?
I havent linked to GMM yet on my blog, but i was very tempted to the other day.
on that note... i'm going to close doohickey and do something productive tonight. shall catch you all in the morning.
time? certain content?
wooow, night ;)
Night
Don't forget to tune in tomorrow to Qik Streaming from SidepodPub
You mean to say this isn't productive?
I keep meaning to re-read that list... Their ALMS news articles were pretty good and they have the odd good opinion column, I stopped reading those because I ran out of time. Presumably GMM are F1-only, and Speed has good links with ALMS anyway, so it was possibly a mistake to assume competence in one area meant competence in another....
will do. erm, in 2011?
Pit stop crews & 'the red glove'
Night.
See ya!
I've had a very happy day starting in my new volunteer post as a receptionist at BTCV.
yeeyyy
Night guys!
well done :-)
Night Gavin
Night Gavin.
Lukeh needs laptop help via twitter...
"Everytime my laptop boots up it says please remove disk or disk error. Not good... Help ... :/"
I saw, but it's Windows. :(
I sort of know a bit about Windows, only a bit, unfortunately I know nothing of laptops. Anyone?
See ya Gavin
That looks fairly serious, will need a reinstall or recovery disc. :(
My only response would be inappropriate and insensitive
I'll wait till it's fixed first ;)
[Good luck with the lappy Lukeh]
:D
He knows
I think the Fisi to Ferrari rumour might be Joe fishing for a way to get Liuzzi back into F1, but don’t tell him i said that! {Comment #1}
It would do that, but it would also tie up several other loose ends in F1. It seems the sensible way of Ferrari and Force India sorting out their respective predicaments.
Occasionally it may depend on the circumstances. Because you declinate(?) no in Finnish. en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät but most of the time it’s ei {Comment #76}
Ah - the "16 cases to the Finnish noun" thing. At least it's not 21 like in the olden days...
I'd just suggest that he tries running a Linux distro as live CD to get his data of the computer (if he can't anymore through windows). Also my baby laptop is (still) dualboot and a week ago windows refused to load (just showed a black screen) after mounting C: through Linux everything was fine again -> Linux has healing powers
Glad you had fun
Ross will be happy. Not only has his team secured funding, but I have it on a good source that he is going to be a grandfather. {Comment #78}
Congratulations!
The only thing I can think of and I have no idea why it should work is to try to boot it up in safe mode. When he switches it on press F8 about once a second and under normal conditions it should open in safe mode. Then he can at least try and find the problem. It probably won't work but if he has no better ideas itis worth trying
Just watching the football fan idiots on the news, thank goodness most motorsport fans are peaceful!
Hows everyone in sidepodland?
Not bad Neil, and you?
Glad you had fun {Comment #668}
Thank you. I'm glad Mum did my hair though - the reception is positioned so that I have my back to a large window. The window faces a main road. The main road was, for large parts of the day, full of standing traffic due to road works...
Yes, great thanks, late evening at work, now destroying a bottle of red!
Good stuff, will be doing similar tomorrow
Have been wise enough to book the day after the SidepodPub off ;)
New Arctic Monkeys album sounds good so far
Less frenetic than their previous offerings
My partner is look to move to London, if we do move I will join you!
You'd be very welcome, Alex and I are in SE but we frequent the centre frequently enough ;)
RG: I stayed in Valencia for a day to enjoy the city and get some rest before I went home to Geneva. Then on Tuesday I went back to work at the bank* {Comment #140}
I like that a lot. Especially the attitude indicated by keeping a part-time job alongside the heady heights of F1. Wonder how many of his clients recognised him from the TV?
Good idea. I suggested holding DEL on startup to check the drive in the Bios. Haven't heard back.
Hi Neil. I'm good, ta.
Sounds like a plan. Beer here.
Thanks, I hope she gets a job soon, the other option at the moment is Birmingham, which I am not so keen on!
You can always meet up with Jackie
Where are you these days then, are you on the SidepodMap?
Yeah, anywhere is going to have more poddies than Exeter!!!
That is a far more logical idea
There you go, see, he leaves the comments and is instantly more productive.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/3860408408/
Have only been waiting for photos for two months.
Pat's not far
Exeter isn't that far away, only an hour from here on the Western edge of Dorset.
Lies!!
where are you pat?
Bridport
Ok, we will have to have a westcountry meet up at some point then!
Sure thing :-)
Does Max Factor come in a spray can?
Forgot to add Arctic Monkeys' version of "Love Machine" to Lukeh's covers list
I don't know but the Ferrari mechanic in the background has a face that is red enough to match is overalls.
I havent read the UK version in years… Which may be due to the fact noone stocks it. {Comment #251}
In my town, the main WH Smith branch plus the local independent newsagent sell F1 Racing. Some months even the local train station stocks a copy! It's Autosport that's as rare as hen's teeth (I seem to have to go to Sheffield for it every time there's an interesting issue, though the duller ones occasionally make it into the independent newsagent).
Over here, we call that 'Cleary Brothers' after the local concrete supplier. As in 'puts it on with a trowel'. So so mean :)
The fact i couldn’t find the guy who posted about sidepodcast suggests it must have some pretty big defficiencies {Comment #285}
If you put "sidepodcast excelente" (without quotation marks) into the Twitter search, the one result is below:
Luisjoset Excelente podcast (ENG)sobre #F1 sidepodcast y F1minute, tambien fotos excelentes http://tinyurl.com/bro4ao
What's he seen?
Jeremy: Is the man date still happening?
[For want of a better term ;)]

ehehehe, de ja vu
Badoer's lap times
I didn't get a positive response when I brought it up last week. I have to say I'm rather surprised - I thought it would be all go. My apologies for getting your hopes up :P
I'll keep plugging it though
From the karting event where he beat Michael Who?
Don't worry, he probably thinks you're trying to hook him up ;)
Or his wage bill for Valencia & Spa (eeek!)
Freebie glasses, media luvvie :)

I said it front of my sister (his wife) and avoided any confrontational terminology. Maybe he hasn't been to London enough yet and feels he still has plenty of things to see by himself.
I am determined to live vicariously through him though.
He probably doesn't want to be filmed by Giggles drinking shots whilst we rope more poddies into joining us from the interwebz
not sure we've actually looked at ay of these pics, some have come out rather well.
(i'm not here)
...and stop being mean about lee!
For if/when Mr C finishes being productive later, he got a response to his comment on F1B.
:D
link?
or lord, it's an essay. will read tomorrow.
I remember several sidepodcasters (including Mr C praising the OWG in Australia) {Comment #321}
That was when it looked like the OWG's work had paid off. To be fair, there have been more overtaking moves this year than last. The trouble is that many of them have been missed and those that have been caught on camera haven't been numerous enough to make people think any improvement has happened.
It also doesn't help that the field has compressed by half-a-second over the winter. Overtaking is predicated on difference of speed between cars and the field, despite the major rule changes last year, is converging on two similarly-speedy solutions to the challenge of F1. Unless the teams involved are on opposite philosophies, the gap needed to overtake is now frequently half the total standard grid spread...
I must go get car rego sorted before work. Later dudes!
http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/08/26/a-little-look-at-f1-media-sausage-making-f1-formula1/
Interesting. I disagree with their stance.
See ya Jeremy
[That's his road tax folks]
see ya
rg's away, but i recall he has issues with that site. ask him about it when he gets back, but i think they were mean to him.
anyhow, pictures...
They seem to have spent some time here though
that is interesting, i think he was taking Mr C's comment a bit personally towards the writer of the post, when its the site in general to be fair that has the problem
todd and grace used to comment a lot and i commented there. like i said (earlier) it went downhill with the gmm stuff.
i am amazed at how bad i am at multitasking... close.the.tab...
righto
no idea how legit this is, but:
“I have just had it from an insider that A1GP will be go for season five – rejoice all you fans the confirmation will be announced soon” {Comment #408
This is good news, better than I dare hope, but I do that one somewhat minor worry...
...what effect will this have on Liuzzi (who might not be able to reprise his role in the Italy team due to the possibility of a F1 racing summons?)
I love the Paris Match style Ari poster near the bottom of that page. I wonder if there is a site anywhere supporting Todt
Ahh ok then
Cmd-tab ?
There's an amusing #FakeF1 tweet thing going on about Liuzzi's alleged impregnation abilities
@fakef1_trainer & @fakeChrisHorner are the instigators
Is this about F1 Racing? How hard can it be? Go to a supermarket, pick up magazine, pay, leave… {Comment #450}
None of my local supermarkets have one. Unlike Nick, my local area has newsagents that stock it instead...
I think he was using A1GP to stay race-fit, ready for F1.
Why didn't Badoer think of that?
Oh, you said stay race-fit
What i don't get...is how you stay race fit when you don't race.
He's clearly not having any problems with his neck of fitness...? How!?
If you ran the Italian team would you let him near the car
Not even if I ran the Jamaican team :)
Ferrari engine, Ferrari test driver....on paper...yes i would....now ive seen him...not so much
Typically a driver wouldn’t lose 4 seconds on one lap just to let a guy through? {Comment #524}
Typically a driver doesn't coast to a halt in the pits to do it either...
*waves*
ugh.. what a disastrous day. Have jumped on mum's old laptop. Rubbish rubbish day followed by a rubbish rubbish evening.
Technology is utterly hopeless at times!
I couldn't help it, I replied. Sorry if I stole your thunder. I am assuming the guys there came and checked out this thread after seeing your comment anyway, so they'll have seen my queries.
Driving on the left avoids tsunamis? Why doesn't everyone instantly switch then. Although I suppose in the middle of Canada tsunamis will be pretty unfrequent
Hope you get it sorted. Kathi mentioned the same solution as Guille, I forgot to pass it on.
:D :D :D
Hi Lukeh
Sometimes technology is nothing but trouble
everyone should have an autosport subscription, if only because they’re frightened to death of letting the magazine rest in peace. {Comment #542}
The online subscription is way too expensive for me to justify having it though - it works out at more money than a subscription of F1 Racing, I could only afford one or the other and with the latter I can
a) rely on it working (Autosport's site doesn't even load on my computer every time, and F1 Racing doesn't need an internet connection)
b) have a permanent record. With online stuff, I frequently struggle to find stuff more than a couple of months old without a lot of hassle. With a print magazine, it's much easier
c) let my parents share it - Dad doesn't stray beyond Formula 1's official website and the occasional blog and Mum doesn't use the internet for any of her hobbies.
It also has the advantage that I don't have to mess around with automatic renewal cancellations (I only take the print version of Autosport a handful of times a year) or worry if my parents see the debit on the bank statement.
However good the Autosport online service is, it will be problematic if everyone ditches print in favour of online...
eh? f1 racing is more expensive, isn't it??
hi sidepodpeople
ace. good answer.
i realised after writing my comment i couldn't care less either way anyhow.
depends where you get your subscription from...
twitter is broken by the 140 char limit. it’s useless for anything beyond shameless self promotion. {Comment #576}
How so? It's a question of adapting communication to the size limits. In fact, site promotion is the hardest thing for me to do with my Twitter stream because my blog's page addresses end up so long (and yes, I am planning on getting round to buying a domain name soon).
tiny url?
He set a lap record at Fiorano in his first day in an F1 car as is traditional for Ferrari drivers. He is currently struggling in F2 which is a spec formula where the cars are run centrally and tested to make sure they are all equal.
Makes you wonder how bad Kimi and Felipe must be
Tweetie will automagically shrink URLs down using bit.ly
eh? f1 racing is more expensive, isn’t it?? {Comment #750}
Mine costs £8 a quarter (and only went up to that recently - before it was £7.15 a quarter). This is because I originally got it when my F1 Magazine subscription was transferred.
TED! (sorta).
well, that's hardly fair is it. but point taken :)
More like leTEDe
Silly lee, she shouldn't get in the way of greatness like that :P
From Flibster:
I’ve had major surgery on my knee – cartilage being hacked about with, kneecap has been re-broken, other bits of bone broken and ground away. Generally, a not very nice procedure. Hopefully all should be ok so that I can be on crutches by October.
On the plus side – old company was so desperate to have me back they offered me a new position they created and I can still work from home. I no longer have to deal with customers! JOY! {Comment #582}
OUCH! That sounds painful. Good to hear the old company is being reasonable, and I hope Flibster gets well soon :)
Hi Guille
Can you park this well? :D {Comment #595}
Probably not, having never tried...
hi
hi steven. there is a launch attempt tonight or it has been moved directly to tomorrow?
I should read first and ask later... ;-)
yeeyyy {Comment #651}
Thank you, Jon and Pat W :)
No launch tonight. The next attempt is Friday at 12:22am Eastern / 5:ssam UK. Weather prediction is 70% good which is high for KSC.
Most up to date info is at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
The good thing about asking is others will see the most up to date info.
“Everytime my laptop boots up it says please remove disk or disk error. Not good… Help … :/” {Comment #657}
Silly question first - Lukeh, have you checked that your floppy drive is empty?
If that doesn't work, I don't know what to suggest. I have a Linux disk specifically for this scenario (which I've never had to use). Otherwise, see if you can get it into DOS prompt.
thanks.
movie time! see you later
Right, I'm off to bed and will attempt not to confuse the snooze & off functions in the morning ;)
Night all
Night! I'm off too, it's been a long few days
wassup with your machine lukeh?
I don't ave one on my laptop. Guille and Kathi both suggested using ubuntu to get onto the hard drive which I'm gonna try in a sec once downloaded. So fingers crossed!!
night leavers..
It's all gone piquet. Just... gone. On my old laptop/mums laptop at the mo.
check out the twitpic I posted. not gooood.
http://twitpic.com/fdgbq
i'm sure it's the hard drive.
the master boot record may be screwed. give me a sec, i'll have a think
in the meantime actual TED
TED('s)CONFUS(n)E(ws)D
Woah! It does look like you're pressing the camera up against his face or somthing there! Bizarre expression is bizarre
Not that I'd think you'd do that to our ted... :P
invisible paddock wall?
lukeh, re: your issue. in your bios, can you just check that the boot sequence order hasn't been altered?
I've had a look and it's the same as it's always been
rats
in that case, run ubuntu from a usb drive and see what you've got. sounds bad though :(
yeah it ain't looking good. :(
I've had it for 8 months so it's still under warranty which is good. Just a pain in the backside really.
Night to all who are leaving now
oooh mr c. I asked a friend of mine who's an awesome songwriter if you guys could use some of his music and he's got no issues at all. Only thing is, he's happy for it to be used on your shows or radio or whatever but doesn't want to leave it up anywhere for free downloading on its own if that makes sense. How do I send it to you?
alison, that's brilliant!
best thing to do is to create a secret drop (or several) and upload them, then send the drop name to christine. drops are free to create at http://drop.io/ and christine's email is christine@sidepodcast.com
:)
I think he was using A1GP to stay race-fit, ready for F1. {Comment #735}
You have a good point there.
If I am reading that correctly he is happy for podcasts containing it to be left online but not the songs themselves. If he has recordings they can be uploaded to http://drop.io/sidepodradio Only Christine, Nr C and I can access files there
We already have one http://drop.io/sidepodradio
wow... how's that work then?
I'm not sure it does.... I clicked on it and I can see audio files in there. 4 of them?
i hope mr c knows about this imposter!
tiny url? {Commment #755}
If a domain name doesn't fix the problem, that would be worth considering.
I set it up weeks ago so I can't remember, There are permissions somewhere that let you set what people are allowed to do. It must be really simoke because I just did it in a couple of minutes without having seen the site before.
You can see them but you shouldn't be able to play them. Would you try to please
Damn. Gave away Mr C's real name. I told him he should have had a better alias
Yeah I can hear them.
i really gotta pay more attention!
:P
FAIL
Thanks
well, that’s hardly fair is it. {Comment #760}
Er... ...I'd like to come up with a witty and brilliant counter-attack, but I don't think it exists in this case ;)
I unchecked the guest's can download box assuming that stopped people playing files but apparently not.
I can't download anything. But yeah, it's all playable.
it does. but it doesn't stop them previewing i don't think :(
Alison can you tell me what you can do now on the sidepodradio dropio?
I thought they could see what was on the site but not play it. Should have tested. Dropio fail for not allowing that option
I get a screen saying "log into this drop"
and a box for a password
That is what I thought. If I leave it like that then only people with the password can upload stuff which should work. It means only a small number of people can access it. Would your friend be happy with that?
Yeah absolutely. That's ideal.
I just need to think of a decent password and then set it up like that. It means people who upload can listen to other people's material but I think I know a way round that.
Nothing seems to happen when I boot with the ubuntu disk in :(
you need to assign boot priority to USB in the bios.
Ah, oki doki.
No luck. :(
Me thinks a visit back to HP is in order but for now I have to go sleep. Cheers for the help though :)
G'night
