We're into Tuesday already, and that means just minutes after finishing up the F1 podcast goodness for the weekend in Valencia, teams are already producing their preview quotes for Spa. Not exactly easing us back in gently after the summer break. Anyway, here are some things to ponder:

  • Statistics ahoy, as Gavin spent a good amount of time working on this blog post to compare Barrichello and Hamilton throughout the race on Sunday. When Whitmarsh tells us they didn't have the pace to win without the pit stop blunder, is he telling the truth? Gavin knows all. Also, over on the Pitlane Fanatic blog, there's a great School Report for Luca Badoer.
  • Jake Humphrey has written a roundup of the weekend's coverage, and how things went down from their side of the camera. It's an interesting read, but I'm not sure I agree with the praise of EJ. But then I never do. Still, Jake promises more to come in the way of pictures soon.
  • Turning to Spa, then, as the teams are already doing, and Red Bull will be hoping for better things. They seemed a bit downbeat after the race, which is understandable. Dank has posted his Belgium Preview, and assesses the teams chances for the upcoming weekend.

That should keep you busy for now. Let us know what you're up to, and whether you're totally over Valencia and looking forward to Spa, or if you'd prefer more time to digest what happened at the weekend. Either way, I'll see you in the comments.

I thought that the F1 tram roaming the streets here in Hong Kong promoting Singapore GP was cool. Well Abu Dhabi does is it with F1 plane. That plane even has F1 engines :-)

The crew are aboard the shuttle and everything is progressing for the launch. The only negative is that the weather which ha been 80% good all the way down has dropped to 40% and they have just had a lightning strike within 5 nautical miles of the launch site.

I've been to sleep. I sleep really lightly though and someone's had the breadmaker on timer downstairs overnight. It started churning and woke me up.

1 hour 6 minutes till the launch time. There is a ten minute launch time and normally the time given is in the middle of that so at least it is not like landings where there is a second window an hour and a half later. This is a obe shot deal. It either goes in an hour or it stays on the ground until tomorrow.

There are only three space walks scheduled for this mission. On flight day 5 (Saturday), flight day 7 (Monday) and flight day 9 (Wednesday). Today is counted as flight day one. There are a few robotic days as well but I will post full mission details tonight or tomorrow

If they have a KitKat machine that talks to you I think it is only reasonable that you are allowed to tell us

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:41

Anyone listening to NASA TV should ignore the countdown information they are giving. The NASA countdown has built in holds where the countdown stops for various reasons. Use the countdown at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html which uses human time and not NASA time.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:41

    55 minutes to launch

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:44

Kennedy space center is in a phase 2 lightning alert. I really wish NASA TV would explain what these terms mean. We currently have 5 weather conditions which are red. One red means no launch. It is not uncommon to have several reads 20 minutes before launch and for the launch to be OK.

Who decided it was a good idea to launch from Florida

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:46

Eric Boe who as Capcom is the only person allowed to talk to the shuttle crew was the ilot of the last but one shuttle mission

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:51

The weather looks really grotty. Still 5 weather condition at red.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:52

We now have 6 red weather conditions as the cloud ceiling has dropped

  • guille230625/08/2009 at 04:54

Who decided it was a good idea to launch from Florida

I think we already had that discussion the time :P

  • guille230625/08/2009 at 04:55

I think we already had that discussion the last time :P

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:56

I think we already had that discussion the time :P

It seems such an obvious question. But you are right we did discuss it the last time when the launch was attempted about 5 times.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 04:58

There seems to be an instrument failure in the measurement of pressure to the MLT. I have no idea what MLT is and NASA TV as usual are hopeless and not explaining it. This is not a hold condition as they have info from other sources saying the pressure is good.

probably a more relevant question at this point would be why do they start the launch procedures when the conditions are anything less than 80-90% green (not this time, I know). the amount of time, fuel, and money wasted is amazing...

The last launch was started three times when at no point was the weather forecast above 40%. I guess that is what happens when the government pays the bills

Eurgh, how am I gonna get back to a sensible sleep pattern. I need to start work on Wednesday.

    Sleep on Tuesday.

My problem is that my body refuses to work on a 24 hour day. I stay up half the night and when I go to bed I am not tired but when it is time to get up I feel like I need more sleep. I need someone to slow down the planet's rotation so that I can have a 30 hour day

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:11

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:20

    space-chicken

I always picture lots of chicken being grilled by the main engines on launch. That would be way faster than microwaving anything

  • Amy25/08/2009 at 05:20

i learned the trick to an early night is to change timezone but not enough for jetlag. When i moved 2 hours backward from nz to aus my 2am bedtime suddenly became midnight. It only worked for about 3 days though. I hate to think what will happen when i go the other direction.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:21

For any lurkers out there the launch can be watched at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:22

So I have to move countries twice a week and circle the globe every 36 days. Amazing I never thought of that

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:22

Two weather conditions have gone green. We now have 4 red conditions left and the weather people expect some of those to clear in time

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 05:24

NASA TV are useless and clueless.

Teams are working hard to try to clear the weather conditions. WHat are they doing? Trying to blow the clouds away?

  • Poppy25/08/2009 at 07:05

Sorry I missed the live commenting on Sun, my interweb was broke :-( hope you all had fun

I never thought I'd say this but it is rather nice to have Lewis back at the front he and PK were in competition for this year's F1 Smacked Puppy Award, PK of course beat him hands down on that one .... the only trophy that is going to be in PK's cabinet this year.

As for the tyre mix up by Mclaren, whether they were not sure they were waiting for Heiki or Lewis that kind of dithering can only have contributed to Lewis missing out to Rubens even if it didn't actually fully cause it.

One last thing - I loved Rubens being completely incoherent to Ross Brawn on the radio and his little podium dance - top stuff!

...so as you can see my head is still full of Valencia and need to get a bit of focus now and concentrate on SPA!

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 07:07

Good point, but they can't just have any TV personality taking naming rights. Otherwise they'll end up with the Letterman....actually that has a ring to it. Not sure would it would be. Some sort of couch perhaps?

Two interesting things from the Williams podcast

They said that running with the tyre detached could potentially have caused issues with the diff and therefore impact the gearbox. Seems reasonable, especially. As Kazu was out of the points

It's funny... Lee and Jenson really seem to get on, Lee and Lewis not so much.

Lewis and Jake seem to get on Jake and Jenson not so much.

    It's a good mix.

I noticed that too - Lewis and Jake have a really good rapport together and Lewis opens up a lot more in interviews with him.

Perhaps Lee and Lewis not so much because she usually talks to him post-race and he has not had many good races this year - always hard to talk about those!

EJ have the fashion police ever been in touch?

EJ can you remember the last sentence you said because you contradict yourself so often that it has stopped being funny?

And Joe also has a blog entry, stating that there is sound logic behind a Fisi move to Ferrari:

Force India driver Giancarlo Fisichella would love to have the chance to drive a Ferrari and it would be in the team’s interest to let him go as a deal could be negotiated to reduce the amount of money that team boss Vijay Mallya owes to Ferrari. The Silverstone team also has a very good replacement in Tonio Liuzzi, who would like to be back in F1 as soon as possible to show the F1 world that they should not have forgotten him.

With Liuzzi claiming to have a contract for 2010 anyway, perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to start getting into the groove early.

French newspaper L'Equipe revealed on Tuesday that representatives of Loeb have contacted the new Team US F1 about the possibility of selected appearances in 2010.

Selected appearances? How would that work, they'd simply a drop a driver to allow him to have a few goes? How silly. I can't see it happening whatsoever. The stuff is from AUTOSPORT as ever.

Not sure if they have, but just reading FKM's site:

Franck the Tank will be back in Europe in the coming days to get back on action with Peugeot and work on their development programme. He has a lot to do as his next race in Petit Le Mans is just in a few weeks now. This time, it won’t be about making a strong impression though… he will be there to fight for the win and that’s pretty good news for all of us!

Wonder what the Gene Genie will do? Presumably he's holding out to take over from Look-How-Bad-You-Are?

I can't believe Ferrari are even thinking about running Badoer at Spa. That was the worst performance in F1 for at least 20 years and now a guy no-one ever rated has dropped in eveyone's estimation. There were 4 speeding offences and another one was just ignored I read this morning. He managed to get overtaken exiting the pits because he was so slow then crossed the blend line and go another penalty for that. Then crashed into Sutil's car in parc ferme. And of course he was two seconds a lap slower than his team mate.

Alguersuari did a better job on his debut despite never having turned the steering wheel and Grosjean was way better. There must be about 30 -50 drivers who could get in that car and be instantly faster.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 10:57

Petit Le Mans news - it'll be Audi vs Peugeot again.

YAY! Audi see sense at last. I wonder if Audi will do the Laguna Seca race as well or just let Peugeot win it. Have Peugeot announced their drivers yet?

    Awesome!

Audi lost Le Mans because the R15 did not have enough race development, so this is good!

Red Bull to make a decision on which engine it will use next year in the next few days. Can we expect a Mercedes deal to be announced in Spa?

However perhaps the most telling part of the item is Helmut Marko's comment about key personnel.

"We have had our drivers' contracts extended. Moreover, all team personnel at the highest and next higher level are basically committed to us until 2012. That means we have continuity and stability within the team for the next few years".

Or put another way. Adrian Newey is going nowhere.

Wouldn't expect any announcement until Monza at least.

Negotiations between the two parties has been going on since April, so they're in no rush to tell the media what their plans are.

I reckon we'll see KERS in the RB6 as well next year.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 11:44

And Helmut Marko categorically denied using KERS till after 2010 because of the FOTA pact (FTA)

  • Alex Andronov25/08/2009 at 11:47

Just in case people are missing the reverse psychology of William's decision to announce now that they are planning to run KERS next year... let me lay out my thoughts...

They don't want to run KERS, they want to be allowed back in to FOTA.

They are basically putting up a sign saying, "negotiate us back in, you want to do this because otherwise we'll do X". Before they came up with this wheeze I think they didn't have enough of a bargaining chip.

  • me25/08/2009 at 11:51

interesting. however, even we know the team can't afford to make flywheel kers work this year. no-ones going to fall for it?

If there is one guy in the paddock not to play poker with its Frank Williams. Well I should say if there is one guy not to play poker with at an honest table it is Frank Williams. There are others who would have marked the cards, bought the dealer and would have someone in their ear telling them your cards

Next year though we have narrower front tyres so the KERS doesn't need to be as light to make the weight distribution suit the tyres. Next year's cars have to start the race with all its race fuel so the extra weight of KERS will be a lower percentage of the overall weight.

Max isn't clever enough to think of that and the FIA has no money since he donated the commercial rights of F1 to his mate Bernie for no personal gain. Absolutely none. Oh no. Nada. Nuthin'. Rien. Zilch. Not a sausage. Not one brown halfpenny.

If an independent company does take over most of the existing people usually stay on.

It could also be that 5live coverage is up for renewal (unsure if it is) In which case they could be looking to bundle this with the TV contract or bring it all in house.

Write an essay. You are in charge of the team that blew the lead by forgetting the tyre guys to bring tyres. Explain in no less than 10,000 words why it made no difference and it was definitely not your fault and although you totally blew the race you are very happy with the result

Two interesting things from the Williams podcast

They said that running with the tyre detached could potentially have caused issues with the diff and therefore impact the gearbox. Seems reasonable, especially. As Kazu was out of the points

    Seems a reasonable excuse, I should've said :)

Ross Brawn says there is 'no good reason' not to retain both Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello next year, ahead of the team opening 2010 contract talks with the pair next week.

Gosh, it's a good week to be a Rubens fan!

    Still hoping the Franck the Tank thing won’t catch on. {Comment #200}

Do they call him that because he's battle-hardened, can cross any terrain without any apparent loss of speed and will defeat all his opponents on the race track?

  • Lukeh25/08/2009 at 13:31

Amazing how one good result makes a difference isn't it?

You think the decision is based on the win? I certainly don't. I think the comments a few weeks ago were a bit worrying but Ross knows exactly what rubens brings to the team all weekend and the experience between jenson and Rubens as teammates.

  • Amy25/08/2009 at 13:32

Gosh, it's a good week to be a Rubens fan!

I want to throw a big party when he reaches 300 races because that number is insane.

Like Lewis said (trust Lewis) "He was racing back when Ayrton was in Formula 1, which is incredible"

Was Tim even born when Senna was around? ;) ;)

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 13:33

Speaking of Joe... will there be an Aside this week? or a combo one at spa?

I do, because the win has transformed his season from 'The guy who helps Jenson win and picks up some points' to 'The guy who will be seriously challenging Jenson for the Title'.

  • Christine25/08/2009 at 13:34

    Unknown.

    I can’t believe Ferrari are even thinking about running Badoer at Spa. That was the worst performance in F1 for at least 20 years and now a guy no-one ever rated has dropped in eveyone’s estimation. {Comment #206}

I can. Basically they had 50 hours to do something between the race ending and entries closing, and if they weren't confident in Gené then getting the necessary negotiations to grab someone else (even one with no contractual ties elsewhere) would have been vewry difficult.

Ferrari also had to make sure that their substitute's substitute's substitute's substitute was the right choice because they would have had no more opportunity to change drivers after that move, except back to Massa (still injured) or Badoer (who started this whole conundrum).

From Bernie's fans questions interview in F1 racing do we know about this and the USGP?

When will we get the US Grand Prix back?

As soon as possible... I'm working on it at the moment, at two venues. I don;t think it will be back at Indy.

Maybe I have missed it but I don't recall seeing that come up on any news websites.

An exclusive! But what 2 US venues can handle F1 right now? The only ones I can think of are Long Beach and an upgraded Watkins Glen. Or Bernie could be trying to cook up a street track - NYC?

  • Lukeh25/08/2009 at 16:04

He also mentions F1 HD isn't on the horizon as the demand for it, from viewers and from tv companies when asked about it, simply isn't there. Although he does say that 'it is getting close.'

I'll stop spoiling it now for those who wanna read it themselves, but there's, like... 5 or 6 pages worth of questions and answers, it's a huge huge interview with lots of bits worth reading back on!

I guess a street track somewhee like Miami would would be good.

There is a good opportunity to build a new venue for the event as well, especially as IRL seem to be looking at going to more street tracks and land in the US is cheaper than it has been for a while at the moment. Possibly Nevada?

Here in Brazil there are strong rumours about Piquet going to Ferrari after Spa (that's why http://mantovani.zip.net draw that Piquet in Ferrari cartoon today). The rumours say that there is a proposal at the table already, but it is not a closed deal yet.

Barrichello was quoted as saying that he talked to Domenicalli about Piquet replacing Badoer and it seems they've taken it seriously.

About Mantovani, I am following his blog from start, and the guy is great! This year he started doing video cartoons, they are just perfect. Check the Germany video: http://mantovani.zip.net/arch2009-07-01_2009-07-31.html#2009_07-18_11_55_06-100063171-0

Yep. I've forgotten all the numbers now but I'm sure there is nothing like the spectrum needed actually available, if we're keeping the same number of channels. I like the IPTV model. Pay as you go, streamable on demand.

Yep. I've forgotten all the numbers now but I'm sure there is nothing like the spectrum needed actually available, if we're keeping the same number of channels. I like the IPTV model. Pay as you go, streamable on demand.

That's why the analogue stream is disappearing

  • me25/08/2009 at 17:06

Who has a brother racing now? :P

    hehehehe.

  • Alison25/08/2009 at 17:06

what's good for a dodgy stomach caused by eating too much curry?

Natural yoghurt? Milk? Something like that probably.

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 17:06

having seen sky's hd compression pixelate football matches, and be at least three seconds behind standard broadcasts, i don't feel like i'm missing out that much.

ah right. to be fair the only place I've seen HD is in shop displays.

  • Bassano Clapper25/08/2009 at 17:06

what's good for a dodgy stomach caused by eating too much curry?

Andrew's Liver Salts always works for me

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 17:07

Probably. What kind of apprentice doctor are you? Guess the cure? I assume you want to work for the NHS

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 17:07

Natural yoghurt? Milk? Something like that probably.

    I have milk. I try that. :-)

It isn't too bad now actually, just a minor annoyance.

  • me25/08/2009 at 17:07

ah right. to be fair the only place I've seen HD is in shop displays.

i like hd, don't get me wrong. but two-pass compression makes for a much better picture and you can't do that live. it's get for after-the-fact transmissions.

  • Bassano Clapper25/08/2009 at 17:07

HD looks fantastic when set-up right, especially games.. I had heard before what you say about live sports, they just don't come across as well.

  • Alison25/08/2009 at 17:10

I wouldn't have too much dairy on a bad stomach

Yoghurt is the best thing for spicy food. It's because the active chemicals in the chilli are lipid soluble so need something with a reasonable fat content like milk to be absorbed. But no, I wouldn't go mental with it, that'd probably make you feel ill in itself.

  • me25/08/2009 at 17:10

I thought that only worked when eating the spicy food. Not way after

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 17:11

    Hungry & hungover?

Hungry possibly. Not hungover. I ate it too quickly last night, I think that's the problem. It'll go away.

As soon as possible... I'm working on it at the moment, at two venues. I don;t think it will be back at Indy.

Maybe I have missed it but I don't recall seeing that come up on any news websites.

He apologised today. Incredibly badly... I wonder if the Beeb will have him back on fighting talk after this?

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 19:01

An exclusive! But what 2 US venues can handle F1 right now? The only ones I can think of are Long Beach and an upgraded Watkins Glen. Or Bernie could be trying to cook up a street track - NYC?

IMS - there are no others that can be ready in short order, not even Long Beach due to the pit facilities.

    sidepodspace update

    STS-128 launch - Take Two

Here we go again. They should have started filling the external fuel tank again about 20 minutes ago after filling it yesterday then draining it when the launch was scrubbed due to 4 weather conditions being outwith safe limits.

Launch is scheduled for 1:10 am and 22 seconds (yes I am serious) Eastern time or 6:10am and 22 seconds UK time. The launch can be up to 5 minutes before or after that time.

This morning predicted weather is 70% chance of good but yesterd's was 80% good until a couple of hours before the launch. The primary concern is cumulus cloud and showers within 20 nautical niles of the launch site.

NASA TV has started coverage and will stay with it until after the launch or the launch is scrubbed. As usual NASA TV can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html and the latest information at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

    9 hours until the launch.

Never try to give computer advice to someone who:

    - Says it's less complicated to get YouTube to email him a link rather than click "add bookmark"

    - Was using IE6, at home, until only a few weeks ago

    - Opens a new window (not tab) & types google.com instead of using the search bar - because it's "easier"

    I give up

The main BBC News site has a UK edition and World edition - or it used to, don't know if it still does. Maybe the Sports section has the same?

    Night.

    #sidepodspace update

    LAUNCH CANCELLED

Tomorrow morning's launch has been scrubbed so don't get up early to watch it cos it ain't happening. At least I should get more than an hour's sleep.

A problem with a fill-and-drain valve inside space shuttle Discovery's aft compartment has scrubbed the Wednesday morning launch attempt for STS-128. The launch team is evaluating the issue and has not set a new launch date and time at this point.

How is it posible that they have had 127 shuttle missions and they are still coming up with new problems. You would think by now there would be some degree of reliability.

Valencia couldn't have been that dull, surely ;)

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:13

Valencia couldn't have been that dull, surely ;)

It wasn't that bad... I don't think there was a pass all day but the strategy kept it mildly interesting and it was a worthy winner.

My impression of it being quiet isn't helped by the fact I forgot to put on any audio/video today and have just been sat here quietly reading Google Reader...

Hoenstly, I really enjoyed the race. And not just because of the outcome, I think it had a lot more to it than people are saying because it was Valencia, for me I went into it expecting absolutely nothing and there was plenty to keep your eyes on through the race. I do agree with Mr C's complaints that ther overtaking was scarce but for Valencia's standards, it was pretty fine!

I thought it was awefull... i was desperate for pitstops after 7or 8 laps then as soon as they came i was desperate for some more.

It seemed good because we haven't had a race for a month and there were several new drivers. I am not against having these events if we can have more good races to balance them out. But there aren't enough races this season to be wasting them on tracks like that,

The first third of the race was dire. Nothing happened. I take notes as you know and there is a gap for several laps and line that says. "Lap 14. Literally nothing has happened."

The only interest was the pit stops. It felt like a race from a 4 or 5 years ago, somewhere like San Marino, where everyone waited for the stops. The problem with saying it was fine by Valencia's standards is that you get used to those standards and start thinking they are okay! It happened with Hungary.

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:25

Speaking of the notes, I need to get editing.. :-)

The problem with saying it was fine by Valencia's standards is that you get used to those standards and start thinking they are okay! It happened with Hungary.

That is the problem I was trying to explain on shows last year when I said I wanted to make a lot of changes to the tech regs to make racing better and create more overtaking. People kept telling me that 2007 and 2008 had been the best seasons in recent years. The level of expectation has dropped so much. Had those seasons happened in the early 80s they would have been considered to be so boring that immediate action would be required to ensure that they were never repeated.

When the current Nurburgring was introduced it was universally loathed for being boring. Part of that was du to the name and the unfair cimparison with the Nordschleife and the full Nurburgring but it was a very dull circuit forthe time. Now we have Valencia which is positively soporific.

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:29

Apparently the teams demanded he had 2 before the concorde, i am not sure if that includes canada, but if it does i expect to see a track on the western side of the country, which i expect would have to be a new build as I dont think there is a city with flat enough streets for F1

    Long Beach?

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:34

    Long Beach?

Requires pit buildings but if they can do that then it'd be great to see... the IRL and ALMS teams work out of awnings.

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:38

    Long Beach?

IS that flat enough for an F1 car?

I think they signed a deal with Indy after the merger so i dont think it will be available for a while, but possibly for the future.

The circuit on GRID doesnt strike me as being of F1 standard, but i dont know How accurate that is

  • Paul25/08/2009 at 22:38

The powers that be do not seem to be interested in racing anymore. I think the last time I enjoyed some real racing was Spa2008, and look what happened after that. There was so many complaints on either side, and one driver was penalised. The tracks just add to this. We are seeing race tracks put in place for commercial reasons, not because the are interesting.

Hehehe, this reminds me now when we chose LB as a track for a few of us on here to do times on GRID and post them onto the Wiki leaderboard, and immediately everyone involved came back saying 'I can't do the first corner well!!!'

    :D

Might need repaving if every new street track has to have a surface like Valencia... which I think is unreasonable tbh...

  • Aitch25/08/2009 at 22:40

I don't know if this has been discussed already but I read an article in todays paper that said Bernie had a copy of the 2010 provisional schedule and it had 18 races on it and one of the races was Montreal and with an extra race on the calender maybe the US will get a race on a proper road circuit.

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:41

It is a big problem. Also having 1 guy desing the tracks doesnt help being about new and interesting ideas.

I am really hoping Abu Dhabi is good because it does seem to have some features we havent seen in tilke tracks before

    The tight right hander?

That is an F1 pileup waiting to happen!

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 22:42

IS that flat enough for an F1 car?

It's very flat. F1 ran there for years until Bernie tried to play hardball with the promotor Chris Pook and lost.

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 22:43

I am really hoping Abu Dhabi is good because it does seem to have some features we havent seen in tilke tracks before

Abu Dhabi will not be good. Guaranteed

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:43

    Night Lukeh.

    The tight right hander?

Turn 1 at LB is a fast but tight left hander at the end of the long curved straight (Shoreline Drive)

That was quite a few years ago... Roads, especialy with heavy american Vee-hic-als tend to bend about

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:44

It's very flat. F1 ran there for years until Bernie tried to play hardball with the promotor Chris Pook and lost.

Ironically when F1 raced on it, it was considerably less flat..

  • Paul25/08/2009 at 22:45

Abu Dhabi will not be good. Guaranteed

    Of corse not.

I cant believe that the track is the very last thing on Bernie's mind. If you want to host an F1 race, the first questions should be "what track are you going to run this on".

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:45

Turn 1 at LB is a fast but tight left hander at the end of the long curved straight (Shoreline Drive)

Ah right, for some reason i was thinking of the varient on East seaside drive.

F1 i belive doesnt permit a fast corner after the start line so that may be where they would have to start.?

Ah, the old F1 track had a start in a different place to the finish, is that the one you're thinking of?

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:48

Abu Dhabi will not be good. Guaranteed

It does have an intresting mix of high and low speed. I hope its good, It probably wont be but i like the idea much more than Valencia.

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:48

I should probably read the second line too, before replying :-)

But yeah, Shoreline is quick but not that much of a corner... should be fine into the left

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 22:48

I cant remember what the varient was called, but i suspect that was it

    Wow, sharp turns!

There seem to be a lot of good roads in that area. Would be great to see it come back...

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 22:59

    Wow, sharp turns!

If you draw a line between 11 and 2 on the F1 map, that's the back straight of the current track. There is a steep hill on that 'F1 bit'..

There seem to be a lot of good roads in that area. Would be great to see it come back...

I'd like to see it return to F1 again, if they can bring it up to modern standards without ruining it...

  • Pat W25/08/2009 at 23:00

The other thing about West Coast US/Canada races is the timezones. It'll be very late Sunday night in Europe unless they run it in the morning locally..

  • Nick25/08/2009 at 23:00

Bernard, If you're reading, we have a consensus... please sort it!

I doubt they would, the problem F1 faces in that area is the time diffreence for the Euro races. Give them a race at a time they can watch and you could hook in a whole lot more fans

....and Bernie should wake up and realise a World championship means different times zones. Those of us not in Europe spend most of the year loosing sleep to watch his races.

It's mainly because of the hours I work I guess. Means I can watch things live if they're at a stupid time in the morning.
