With Valencia out of the way, we will already be turning our attention to the next race at Spa. I thought we had got all the back-to-back goings on at the beginning of the season, but apparently it is not so. Here are some of the things we are talking about right now:

  • Barrichello will no doubt be celebrating his win - the first since 2004 - in style. I love that the paddock was full of good thoughts for Rubens, and no one could have anything bad to say about our race winner. Equally, our comments were full of love for the Brazilian, and long-time fan Lukeh blogged about his own happiness alongside Rubens'.
  • Red Bull are reportedly thinking about KERS, although Christian Horner was quite cagey about it yesterday. They may or may not be planning to implement it in the next couple of races, but it does mean that the technology is back in the headlines again, and maybe even back in favour.
  • Although Domenicali is saying all the things that Badoer would want to hear right now, in that they don't plan to chuck him out of the car just yet, they haven't ruled out a replacement after Spa. Luca previously said he would be in the seat until Massa returned but after his woeful performance this weekend, that doesn't seem likely at all. Who will they draft in to replace him?

That'll do it for now. We are/were up into the early hours watching Franck drive in the IRL race at Sonoma, so today will probably be a tough Monday. Either way, I'll see you in the comments.

A little tip for those who take holidays. If possible, have the Monday of your first week back as a day off as well. Especially if you know you'll have a big night on Sunday. A four day week when you come back makes the holiday so much better!

The tab I am commenting in works perfectly well and I can ctrl + tab through all tabs but the tab is not shown with the other tabs in the window. I also can't close any other tab. The other tabs show normally with ctrl tab but when I am in the commenting tab none of the other three tabs are highlighted. So it knows I am in that tab but the tab is not shown even though the doohickey appears each time I ctrl tab through the tabs.

Bizarre. Have you tried using another tab to open doohickey, while redirecting the current (missing) tab to another site?

That's odd. On the new FF you can right-click a tab and re-open it as a new window, try that..

I switched from the LCLT to the doohickey on it. It does everything except show the little tab itself and regardless what I do it won't let me close any of the other tabs.

I guess I will have to close the window and start again.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 00:06

Can you drag that tab to another window?

No because I can't see the tab to pick it up but I can see the doohickey in that tab

There is no reason why Franck can't race next week if a car is available to him. His next ALMS race is the Petit Le Mans on September 26th

NASA are 96% certain that the shuttle will launch at stupid o'clock Tuesday morning. I want to see the launch but I don't want to have to get out of bed at stupid o'clock -2 hours to watch it. Especially not if the 4% chance of postponement hits.

I disagree. I think he was very close to dangerous. That effort in the pit lane was just stupid, and things like that can become dangerous very quickly.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 00:51

Better putting Martin in the car

May as well. This might all be a subtle plan to get testing restored.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 00:57

If the problem is driving these particular cars without experience, the drivers who have been in them this year should be the first choice, you would think

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 01:06

Yeah he said there were too many buttons and that his steering wheel used to have NO buttons on it.....

He probably wouldn't play about with the buttons to fine tune everything for every corner but Badoer probably didn't do that either. He was so far off the pace it wasn't worth the effort.

I am afraid I didn't stay up for Indy but I see from the results that Mike Conway was mega....

    Nice to see....

So it appears Dixon does better when I take no active interest in his races until after they are finished.

    Good to know.

For the sake of my country, I will never care about IRL again.

I am well thank you. I enjoyed the race yesterday solely because of Radio 5 and I am excited that I will be doing a special post later on whether Barrichello won because he was faster or because of the pitstop mistake on Lewis...

IRL last night - 24 cars, F1 next year - 26 cars . I don't know why I thought there are more cars on IRL grid. the only race I watch is indy 500 and that track looks quite busy with cars

Ah, the Indy 500 usually brings out teams who only race once a year for the money.

IRL has a lot of part-time drivers for example Sarah Fisher who only does Ovals...

Is it back to work day today for you Christine? Were you sharpening your pencils and filling in your work revision timetable?

Mm. I both love and hate it because it's nice and busy, but my god is it busy!

On the flip side, back to work means:

"Did you have a nice time?" Yes.

    "Wasn't the weather good?" Yes.

"Did you enjoy the farm show?" Yes. I bought a hat.

"You've had your hair cut?" WHAT? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?

  • Jon Waldock24/08/2009 at 09:21

"You've had your hair cut?" WHAT? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?

Ahh i love it when people say that, "oh really? i was not aware of this?"

or when my Grandma says "haven't you grown" i say "no, but i'm almost certian that you have shrunk"

  • Christine24/08/2009 at 09:23

  • Alex Andronov24/08/2009 at 09:25

or when my Grandma says "haven't you grown" i say "no, but i'm almost certian that you have shrunk"

I had a friend come round on Sunday to watch the race... I've known him since I was 12. He's 30 now - I saw him last about 3 weeks ago.

I welcomed him at the door and I said, "hold on, haven't you grown"?

    "No," he claimed, "I haven't!"

Then I realised I didn't have any shoes on.

That was a bit strange - I opened my browser (Firefox 3.5) and it greeted me with a message headed, "Well, this is embarrassing"*.

I understood that artificial intelligence was getting advanced, but I would never have imagined that the humble browser would be feeling emotions by 2009...

    * - For those who care, it was having trouble loading a Facebook app because it was trying to do it the moment I loaded and (for obvious reasons) I had yet to log into Facebook at that stage.

Badoer… Making Yuji Ide look good.

    Will his superlicence be under threat? {Comment #37}

The best line of BBC commentary in the race was when Martin Brundle, commenting on Webber and Button being told to overtake and defend respectively, said, "They're professional drivers - they all know what to do". Before he had chance to draw breath for his next sentence, the camera moved to Luca Badoer pointing the wrong way mid-spin.

My own comment was, "Well, most of them do!"

My take on the Superlicence is that Luca will be fine as long as he does not produce a repeat performance at Spa. If he shows significant improvement, the FIA will simply put Valencia down to a bad weekend at the office, which every driver has occasionally (albeit not necessarily as blatantly).

If Badoer is still crashing into cars in parc fermé, driving the wrong way down run-off areas and inducing overtaking in the pit lane in Spa, I think the licence will be considered for revocation via the F1 Commission, which will give Ferrari the excuse it needs to put someone else in the car.

I wonder if those extra air ducts I talked about last night are to do with cooling for KERS?

I think so, but since they never use the acronym and the parent company's website won't load on my computer, I can't be sure.

I read a Sam Michael interview recently. Williams still have people working on KERS and they want to run in before the end of the season.

i didn't know that. if they manage it, it'll be impressive, but the seasons almost drawing to a close. we only have x2 european races remaining and after that it starts to get expensive to fly new parts out to venues.

That's the one then. I think they decided back in the eighties to just use the acronym for some reason.

They may be forced to use it now so it's ready for next season. I mean, it's not like they can have a test day at the moment...

true, but their kers solution is completely different from everybody else's. could they learn anything from bringing it into production?

i didn’t know that. if they manage it, it’ll be impressive, but the seasons almost drawing to a close. we only have x2 european races remaining and after that it starts to get expensive to fly new parts out to venues.

    From the Williams website:

Q: Are you still pursuing KERS?

SM: We still have a team of people working on KERS, but I don’t want to put a date on when we’ll run it for the first time.

I read something separately a while ago saying Singapore could be a good track on which to test KERS.

@Gavin - the same has occured to me. If you are being cycnical you might run the flywheel on Kaz's car at one race and then market Hybrid Power "as a proven F1 technology".

Or use Kaz's car as a mule for the new system - not entirely a bad idea as he can be a bit of a donkey sometimes! ;)

Don't start dissing my team. We've got squillions in the bank. Ahem......

I've read quite a few contradictory things on different sites. Some say the big advantage of the flywheel is that it is much lighter than the battery power systmes. Others say it is heavier.

  • Amy24/08/2009 at 11:15

part of the issue is where to put it. ideally it would be on the back of the gearbox, but this years cars like a forward weight bias, which makes that difficult.

I've read quite a few contradictory things on different sites. Some say the big advantage of the flywheel is that it is much lighter than the battery power systmes. Others say it is heavier.

It's certainly more efficient at gathering and storing the energy, plus batteries are pretty unsound ecologically. The thing is, with the rules the way they are, you're not allowed to use all the energy you've gathered as it is so extra efficiency doesn't add much.

  • me24/08/2009 at 11:17

It seems insane that there are four retired or fired F1 drivers with more relevant experience than him and have no chance of getting in that car.

    Parting shot from 5LiveF1's Twitter:

Badoer damaged the rear crash structure of Sutil's car as he crashed into it in parc ferme... Not a great weekend really...

Even Badoer's collision with Sutil is nothing like what Kimi can pull off. ;)

And on that note, off to bed for me. Good night! :D

boo. nine out of how many?

  • Kathi24/08/2009 at 15:44

boo. nine out of how many?

    9 out of 16.

You are 161 points behind the leader (riktum) and 6 points behind places 6-8.

You've beaten Gavin and his statistics :)

You're team is worth 41.6 Millions because Rosberg value has increased 0.4, Hamiltion 0.5, Fisi 0.5, Alonso 0.3 and Buemi's dropped 0.1 million. Which makes you the second richest team.

  • me24/08/2009 at 15:46

    9 out of 16.

    that sounds bad.

You've beaten Gavin and his statistics :)

    that sounds good.

Interesting thought on the back of something in the live show... You guys were talking about what would you put all of your eggs in one basket or not with Red Bull and Webber.

It has been common practice in previous years to sweeten drivers who are going to have to go into a supporting role for the rest of the season by signing them up to contract extensions.

I'd say RBR have signed the extension for Vettel on the condition that he supports Webber for the rest of the season.

  • Bassano Clapper24/08/2009 at 16:06

  • RCC24/08/2009 at 16:25

    Hi all

I'm 24 hours out of date but heigh ho!

I thought yesterdays race was as average. I haven't heard the podcast yet (awaiting mp3 file) but i can imagine it came in for some criticism??? A beautiful venue ruined by dull racing. I love the final sector of the lap, that's awesome through those corners, proper playstation stuff lol.

I was gutted macca lost the race (Whitmarsh trying to put a brave face on it - oh dear) but glad we had some excitment instilled for the final laps. I think if the pitgate hadn't happened then I feel Lewis wold've won the race. I'm sure the legions of Brawn fans may disagree.

It was really strange watching the full replay last night (yes i'm really sad and managed to watch the whole thing again), the hole race looked for intensive purposes a test session.

What was the general mode towards the race amongst the sideplodders?

  • Lukeh24/08/2009 at 16:25

hi sidepodworld. Quick q. Have you heard from lou in comments today? If not, huge surprise to share when i get home!

    Yo yo!!

I felt so sorry for Badoer, I'm not usually one for sympathy but he really tried yesterday. Wish we could've seen an onboard for his race start. We never saw a replay (even though there was plenty of time!)

Who did people feel did best out of the newbies? Grosjean impressed me in qualifying. I've always been passive towards him in regards to GP2, get the feeling i've found a new driver now lol .

    :(

    Can you tell us anyway?

  • James24/08/2009 at 16:45

    Can you tell us anyway?

Well Mr C mentioned in the live show how he couldn't keep up with all the blogs because there was so many, essentially the idea was for a site where part of the latest posts from a number blogs would be and link back to the originals.

Whilst its not impossible there are other ways of doing it such as combing the rss feeds for the blogs into one so there would only be the one feed.

I think its just I need something web realted to do so my brain jumps on the first thing it thinks of :D

  • Alex Andronov24/08/2009 at 16:48

Whilst its not impossible there are other ways of doing it such as combing the rss feeds for the blogs into one so there would only be the one feed.

Couldn't you do this with Yahoo Pipes?

However you'd have to be very careful about how you did it. People would not take very kindly if you were scraping their content.

  • Jon Waldock24/08/2009 at 16:48

Afternoon all, am currently in the M6 toll service station....i hearts free wifi.

That was pretty cool enough I though, she initially sent this photo when they got to the street circuit area, but then she surpassed any levels of sheer awesome when she sent me this!

I really shouldn't be allowed to watch him at work. Whenever I watch he always does a good job really, but something gets in the way, ie. other cars or broken legs.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 17:34

    #sidepodspace update

NASA still claim they are going to launch the shuttle at stupid o'clock in the morning. The launch is scheduled for 1:36am Eastern or 6:36am UK. Weather is still 80% good which is the highest in ages. The last mission never got above 60%. They start filling the petrol tank in less than 3 hours.

I am going to be very cranky tomorrow if I get up at 5 o'clock-ish-ish to watch the build up and it doesn't fly.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 17:36

I really shouldn't be allowed to watch him at work. Whenever I watch he always does a good job really, but something gets in the way, ie. other cars or broken legs.

There is another IRL race next weekend which is on an oval so it will be interesting to see if he is in the car for that. There are three races left all on ovals and you would think if they want him for next year they would let him at least run the practise and quali for that to see how he copes.

  • me24/08/2009 at 17:53

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 18:19

That was a bit strange - I opened my browser (Firefox 3.5) and it greeted me with a message headed, "Well, this is embarrassing"*.

I have had that a couple of times. I jist tell it to load all tabs and it does.

i haven't dropped you either jackie. i'm using friendfeed to read and reply to tweets. one second, i shall explain.

first take a look at this page, these are all the tweeters i'm following, you're in there somewhere jackie:

    http://friendfeed.com/sidepodcast-tweet-stream

using friendfeed i see all of your tweets, not just the ones twitter wants me to see. i miss nothing.

i'm royally chuffed off with twitter. i absolutely hate it and i hate the people behind it and the decisions they make. i have to use it, i cannot ignore it, therefore i have found a way to make twitter bearable.

it's called friendfeed. please ignore the list of people on twitter that i'm following. its meaningless. i use it solely to import new people into friendfeed and flush the list regularly.

that make any sense jackie. i am following you, i promise.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 18:49

:D .. does Toyota only have a lump on a friday?

They took it off after trying it on Friday. I think it must have been banned on the grounds that it was offensively ugly

  • Christine24/08/2009 at 18:49

    Awwwwww. I like them. :D

Ooh, does that mean dropio is working again?

that bit could be improved, yes. but... there is no other way of every single tweet from a person. twitter will not allow it.

i can live with the logos.

so thats what the podium gesture was about :D

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 19:03

I am really getting into Bang goes the theory. It just finished on BBC1. It's a science/tech thing but in simple language. They had one feature where the US military have come up with a way of keeping people away from certain areas using directed sound so that it just got too painful if you were anywhere near it. The presenter took some polystyrene faoam and made an outside in anechoic chamer which he wore on his head and walked right up to it. All that military technology and expense rendered utterly useless with a couple of quids worth of polystyrene

  • Jackie / saltire24/08/2009 at 19:03

The schedule is full but there are quite a few shows where people are looking for questions and the like.

Nikki is looking for people to leave voicemails about their part of the world

Sean is looking for people to leave sports related comments or questions

RG is looking for stuff people want predictions on.

Alianora is looking for top 5s

Alison and I are doing an F1 phone in but will happily use voicemail or text left on the wiki. Someone in yesterday's show asked what people would do if they were CEO of F1 and could make any changes they like so I have nicked the idea for our show.

  • Christine24/08/2009 at 19:13

    Wrong.

They should just have started loading fuel into the shuttle. I just found out how cold the fuel is. NASA always talk about having a chilldown before they load the fuel. The liquid oxygen is chilled to -183C and the liquid hydrogen is chilled to the unbelievable temperature of -253C or 20 degrees above absolute zero. I am amazed the hydrogen tank doesn't shatter as soon as the engine is lit.

Kinda like that frozen gas canister at the karting.

I don't think that NASA can create temperatures that low outside in Florida

It's called a LOT of asbestos insulation.

It's called a LOT of asbestos insulation.

That's not very safe or light, haven't they heard of expanded polystyrene?

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 20:43

It's called a LOT of asbestos insulation.

I would imagine asbestos at 20 above absolute zero would be as brittle as glass

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 20:45

That's not very safe or light, haven't they heard of expanded polystyrene?

I would have thought a tank in tank with a vacuum between would be my guess. I wonder if I can get hold of the fesign drawings for the shuttle

  • Dan Brunell24/08/2009 at 20:49

I would imagine asbestos at 20 above absolute zero would be as brittle as glass

Sorry, they don't use it on the solid rockets or fuel tank but in the shuttle.

It's one of the things I remember when I went to Houston to the Johnson Space Center. We talked a bit with all the problems they have removing all the asbestos from all of NASA's buildings and designs. They were trying to find a decent replacement to some of the asbestos materials they used to insulate the wiring and certain components in the shuttle.

  • Andy Taylor24/08/2009 at 20:53

I would have thought a tank in tank with a vacuum between would be my guess. I wonder if I can get hold of the fesign drawings for the shuttle

Thermal insulation is mainly from the foam they spray on the outside (which then falls off during launch).

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 20:57

Thermal insulation is mainly from the foam they spray on the outside (which then falls off during launch).

It's not meant to fall off it just does each time. They would need to have something in the inside too. I can't imagine metals at 20 above absolute zero surviving the launch

  • Alison24/08/2009 at 21:01

Is that what made that shuttle crash? Bits of foam smashing into things?

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 21:03

Is that what made that shuttle crash? Bits of foam smashing into things?

Yes. The foam damaged the heat resistant tiles on the underside of the shuttle and as the shuttle re-entered the atmoshere the temperature of the exposed metal increased to a point where the shuttle disintegrated.

  • Andy Taylor24/08/2009 at 21:05

Is that what made that shuttle crash? Bits of foam smashing into things?

Columbia, yes. Challenger was destroyed by a failure of the O-ring seals in one of the solid rocket boosters.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 21:07

The one that blew up on launching had been exposed to lower temperatures than intended for longer and when the SRB supplier Thiokol told NASA not to launch NASA put a lot of pressure on them to change no to yes. They have Max's approach to safety. The bottom part of the SRB has a series of O ring seals and one of those failed. They throttle down the shuttle until it passes through the area of maximum aerodynamic pressure and then you hear mission control say 'go for throttle up' When they increased the throttle level gases escaping from the SRB cased the shuttle to blow up. The crew compartment stayed intact and was found.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 21:08

Columbia, yes. Challenger was destroyed by a failure of the O-ring seals in one of the solid rocket boosters.

I always get those too mixed up.

  • Dank24/08/2009 at 21:50

Apparently the BBC's coffers have hit rock bottom already this season and they don't have the budget to fork out for any 'big' features.

Also, their on-air line up is unlikely to change next season, even if it does get out sourced to someone else to produce.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 21:50

that would explain the force india pit-stop feature appearing before every single race then.

Also, their on-air line up is unlikely to change next season, even if it does get out sourced to someone else to produce.

how come? and how likely is it to be outsourced?

If you take some time and think about the reasons for going on as I did once you will see that there are plenty of good reasons to go on apart from seeking investment. Some off the people who offer ridiculously small amounts of equity must be there just to advertise their product. Imagine the cost of 5 minutes of prime time advertising.

Anyone remember the guy with the red mohican and the kilt? Asking for investment in his jerky making business?

The dragons laughed at him and he's been trading on that ever since. Doesn't seem to have done his business any harm at all, quite the opposite in fact. He also now has an extremely spicy beef jerky called "Dragon's Breath":D

i'm not defending twitter, i despise it. just don't follow the logic.

hey ya. you missed a dull race with a good result, and an interesting race with a bad result.

oh no, just missed the interesting race. I saw the dull race but PC and TV are in different rooms. I'm seriously thinking about a TV acquisition card + second monitor for next weekend (god, that it's too close to stage 6 of sidepodaddiction...)

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 22:27

    I'm out.

My favourite thing to happen in shows is what happened last week. After two people declared themselves out the guy presenting starts mentioning that he has all there orders that he had not previously mentioned.

    OR

The totally clueless guy that Theo was just on the point of investing in (grill thing?) but wanted to change there business plan. He had explained to them that the money they had previously assigned to stock and selling to retailers would not be needed if you license it to the cooker manufacturers. So the final question before the deal was agreed was you now hace £x thousand pounds that you can use for something else and without engaging his brain he says he would use it to develop new products. Theo couldn't get the I'm out said fast enough.

You have a product that has made nothing and you have no idea what the costs of the new approach are so instead of assigning it to something that would help sell that you go and divert your attention on to something entirely different.

We don't get IRL here. Did they show the race on their web site?

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 22:29

Maybe they would like news coverage of a twitter attack on TV news for free advertising though

  • Paul24/08/2009 at 22:29

    Geoffrey?

Please no. He is dull even when commentating.

  • Alison24/08/2009 at 22:29

    Yeah, it was amazing!

  • Nick24/08/2009 at 22:29

how is that twitter's fault? you could do the same with a blog, no?

Its a lot easier to get the message to people through twitter. Aggers couldn't put something like this on his BBC blog, but this is just like a massive txt to your mates.

I'm not saying its just twitter, but it giver high profile people a lot more power.

  • me24/08/2009 at 22:30

They do things on their website you cannot imagine. You get the main feed and 4 onboards and live telemetry from every car and that is only one of the options. YOu can have a split screen of two of the onboards with telemetry thrown in. The service is mindblowing.

  • Paul24/08/2009 at 22:31

    Yeah, it was amazing!

Sorry I missed it. Stupid work.

Well there is no way that can be successful, they are not stopping everyone watching and charging millions.

  • Nick24/08/2009 at 22:33

I dont think advertisng the fact that people are boycotting you is a good thing, it will inform more people who are inclined to boycott to join in and those who aren't are unlikely to act differently.

The whole boycottscotland thing is 100x bigger than it was because of media coverage

  • me24/08/2009 at 22:33

I'm not saying its just twitter, but it giver high profile people a lot more power.

i really do think that is a good thing.

i like that when i bitch about mediatemple on twitter, something gets done. it's preposterous to have to do it, and we're clearly just going to leave them. but before i had the "power", nothing got done until it suited them.

now they are obliged to respond. and quickly.

All the anti-Americans will come just to spite the Americans and very few Americans won't come or won't buy stuff. The FBI guy sounded like a hysterical little girl. Releasing Megrahi aho clearly didn't do it He says' Megrahi's release makes a mockery of the rule of law and was detrimental to the cause of justice. How can anyone take that seriously from a country that has people in Guantanamo Bay who have never been charged in court let alone convicted and sentenced?

  • Christine24/08/2009 at 22:40

now they are obliged to respond. and quickly.

There is also the flip side of that which is that people can defend themselves quicker as well.

I forget the example I used a while back about a vicious internet rumour circling about a celeb. The interwebs works so fast that Twitter is the perfect solution for this kind of problem.

They tweeted, don't be ridiculous it's not true.

    Job done. Rumour sorted.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 22:41

    the what?

The usual American reactionary response to anything they see as anti-America. It's like renaming French friees freedom fries when the French had the good sense to refuse to have anything to do with invading Iraq.

Scotch Whisky to be renamed Freedom Liquor apparently, which misses the point entirely - French Fries can be made anywhere, Scotch has to be made in Scotland.

Robert Mueller the Director of the FBI worked on the prosecution.

The only identifcation evidence against Megrahi was some guy who worked in a shop in Malta said Megrahi was definitely the guy who bought a suitcase from him months earlier. You would think he was selling custom designed Lewis Vuiton luggage and not no-descript cases to tourists by the thousand. Turns out a few days before he had seen Megrahi's photo in a magazine named as a suspect. Frankly the judges who delivered the verdict should be charged with allowing a miscarriage of justice.

But I guess the whole thing shows the massive failures with devolution. Does Vista have a "play this like it's 1995" option?

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 22:56

Land of the free and all that.......

I had a brilliant day with a couple of American collegues about ten years ago. They were over here for a couple of weeks so I took them out for the day. I can't remember where we were but I started to cross the road and reslised they had stopped. I went back to find out the problem and they said the red man was on at the crossing and that there was no traffic. Are you not worried about being charged with jaywalking? As a joke I said this is a free country where adults are allowed to cross the road.

It was only intended as a one off but we no sooner crossed when one pointed at a shop window and asked if it was a bookies. I said yeas and they asked if that meant people could gamble. So I told them that it was a free country and if I wanted to gamble my money it had nothing to do with the government. The rest of that day I guarantee there were a dozen things that we were allowed to do that they are not but the real clincher was that I took them to a football match.

They were really confused when the match kicked off without the national anthem being played. I pointed out that it was two Scottish teams and anthems were only played at internationals. They seemed most puzzled about this and started listing all the occasions that they sung their anthem. Why do that I asked and they replied because they were free to do it. You should have seen there faces when I asked if they were free not to do it.

  • Alison24/08/2009 at 22:56

Does Vista have a "play this like it's 1995" option?

If it does, it's a mystery to me....

Because the government consultation was done with a Scottish minister instead of a British minister.

Because the government consultation was done with a Scottish minister instead of a British minister.

The west Lothian question is just the begining of the problem.

I am not thrilled by the way it is set up either but the answer to West Lothian question is simple. Scotland chose to have a devolved parliament and no part of England has. Westminster is a UK parlianent where everyone is entitled to vote. The idea that MPs become only eligible to vote on issues based on geography or other requirements would be the start of a downward spiral.

Lemmings is kinda like managing an f1 team, you have to change your criteria and choice of strategy based on what happening with your people. It's basically the same thing.

    no lemming left behind.

  • Nick24/08/2009 at 23:27

I am not thrilled by the way it is set up either but the answer to West Lothian question is simple. Scotland chose to have a devolved parliament and no part of England has. Westminster is a UK parlianent where everyone is entitled to vote. The idea that MPs become only eligible to vote on issues based on geography or other requirements would be the start of a downward spiral.

I dont see why england cant have aparliament on its own if scotland can.

If you ask somone where they are from they will likely say their town then their country. I dont know many people who claim to come from South eastern england.

If we are to have an English parliament it makes sense to have it at Westminster, and the easiest way to do it would to ask ministers who's constituents are not effected by the legislation to leave the room.

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 23:33

I dont see why england cant have aparliament on its own if scotland can.

Neither do I. The main reason it doesn't is people keep voting for political parties that don't want it. There is no political pressure for it despite parties standing at elections in favour of independence or devolution for England.

If you ask somone where they are from they will likely say their town then their country. I dont know many people who claim to come from South eastern england.

I find the opposite. Very few people immediately say they are English. They give a town, a city it is near and which part of England it is in.

If we are to have an English parliament it makes sense to have it at Westminster, and the easiest way to do it would to ask ministers who's constituents are not effected by the legislation to leave the room.

If England wants a parliament England should pay for it and set it up. Westminster is a British parliament which can't be stopped working and converted into a local parliament for a few hours a day. I can imagine the response if I said all the English MPs should be asked to leave so that it could be a Scottish parliament for a couple of days a week

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 23:33

You have a bunch of mindless things called "Lemmings" which come out of a hatch at a predetermined minimum rate and then walk in a straight line irrespective of the terrain. Your job is to use the limited tools given to you for that level to get as many lemmings as possible to a doorway before running out of time.

If you get at least as many % lemmings through the doorway as the level set as an objective, you get to do the next level. Otherwise you have to start the level all over again.

I've only ever seen that party stand for the European Union elections before, which I always found odd because that's not where an English parliament could be created.

Personally, I don't see any reason why England needs its own government - it would just be another layer of bureaucracy standing in the way of getting things done and sapping money out from more useful projects. Scotland can have independence or a devolved government as it sees fit, but every law passed in Westminster affects England, so it might as well continue to be the forum where English law is created. As for the Scottish MP presence in Westminster, that's fine by me because it lends another perspective (hopefully) to political discussions and because the laws passed in Westminster still affect Scotland even if they're not enforced there.

I worked with someone who stood for a council seat in Portsmouth. They are a very small part to who want an independent England.

The thing is English MPs outnumber every other country's MPs put together. Scotland's situation is a bit different. Every Scottish MP could vote one way and yet lose a vote by 8 to 1. That is a massively different situation

  • Steven Roy24/08/2009 at 23:59

    How is that fair?

How is it fair that for 300 years Scotland has had its MPs over-ruled because an English queen bribed a couple of dozen barons who were short of money because of the failure of Scotland's colony in Panama and that she had threatened the removal of their land in England if they refused?

Why is it fair Scotland was ruled by a Conservative government for one term that had only one Scottish MP?

Scottish MPs can only affect English law if there is a split amongst the English MPs. At no point during 18 years of Conservative government was there anything close to a majority of Conservative MPs in Scotland and English MPs railroaded through law after law regardless of the views of the people of Scotland.

I am simply pointing out that there is a massive difference to a situation where a split between England's MPs can allow Scottish MPs to hold sway occasionally and the situation where Scotland's views can be totally ignored and the country effectively run by a foreign government.

The situation will happen again after the next general election with the exception of the devolved powers.

I am simply pointing out that there is a massive difference to a situation where a split between England's MPs can allow Scottish MPs to hold sway occasionally and the situation where Scotland's views can be totally ignored and the country effectively run by a foreign government.

I know what you mean, I hope i havent come across as anti scottish because thats not how i feel at all.

I just ind the situation imperfect and it annoys me. Not to mention the fact that no one in England is willing to have the debate so nothing gets done, which i find incredibly frustrating

    Damn you Lemmings!!

Not at all. The English democrat council candidate I used to work with always wore a St. George's cross badge and people used to ask if that annoyed me and couldn't understand when it didn't. People using the union flag as an English flag and people who say England when they mean Britain annoy me but people who want devolution or independence efectively increase the chance of me getting what I want. I still remember the first time I saw Carl Fogarty have an English flag on his Ducati. I was ecstatic that here was an Englishman who was saying he was English and not British.

The current system is ridiculous but it has improved under the present government. We no longer have the obscenity of a hereditary house voting on laws. Now we need to get rid of the nonsense of the PM visiting he queen once a week. What a waste of time. THe official reason he goes is so that she can tell him what the people think. How can someone who has never dressed themself know what real people think?

Isnt he supposed to tell her what the people think?

I dont mind the queen. I undertsad whty people dont, but from a political point of view the position works as well, if not better than any other.

Hereditary monarchy may not be the best way to fill it, but i am sure there are worse ways

Amazingly enough no. He is supposed to tell her what her government is doing in her name and she tells him what the people think. Uterly insane.

To me any child born in a country should have the right to aspire to any position in that country. The idea that the highest position is still someon'e birthright I find abhorrent. I almost fell of my chair recently when I heard someone on Question Time say that they were considering ending the male priority so that female descendants could not be overtaken by a younger male. Apparently they want to do it on the grounds of equality. It seems to escape their attention that there are other ways they could increase equality of access to that position.

Britain is being held back massively because nothing can be done that might upset the queen. It is yet another example of the country's obsession with the past. This country needs to stop looking backwards and start looking to the future.

OK, I'll see you in an hour or so if I don't drown in the way home. 'Raining' is a massive understatement...

wasn't that bad... rain looked much worse from the comfort of 'inside' than it really was :-)

    Amy, are you here?

  • Steven Roy25/08/2009 at 01:37

Thank you very much to whoever introduced me to lemmings. So much for getting some sleep. I will be awake in 2 and a half hours to watch the build up to the space shuttle launch. I will post comments if anyone else is around.

The build up has started and can be watched on NASA TV at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html If you have any problems with the player point your mouse at the tab marked 'Other Viewing Options' and you will get a choice of players.

Up to date information can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
