You may know this as the day of the European Grand Prix at Valencia. Here at Sidepodcast Towers, this is known as Franck Day! The Frenchman will be lining up 8th on the grid at Sonoma tonight. There is no way I'm going to be able to stay up to watch him, but I will try my very best. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about until then:

  • Badoer is still struggling, and still insisting that he's seeing this weekend as a test session. Surely that is the wrong way to approach things, or is that just his stock excuse? He does seem way off the pace, but perhaps he will be able to pick things up when the racing gets going.
  • Red Bull have started to look at the possibility of running KERS towards the end of the season. It's clear that the device isn't prohibitive in any way, now that Hamilton has won a race and taken pole position here in Valencia. This will be a decisive moment for the championship though, won't it?
  • We have discovered a view of Valencia that is worth looking at in yesterday's F1 Big Picture, but the track really is an eyesore, isn't it? It's impossible to tell the corners apart. What can they do to solve this?

That'll do for now. It's going to be a big day, so make sure you're tuned in for the Parade Lap, the race, the Debrief, and Live Commenting Franck. I will see you in the comments.

    Good evening all,

I have just finished my Qualifying Analysis for Valencia. Take a look and let me know what you think ;)

Oh, and sorry for posting so late, I had to sort out some stuff first! ;)

Big giant LED signs with the corner names and a sensor that makes confetti shoot out and music scream out when someone drivess over it

Never ever ever come back to Valencia ever again? that would sort the problem out

  • Christine22/08/2009 at 23:14

Never ever ever come back to Valencia ever again? that would sort the problem out

    That would work, yes.

  • Steven Roy22/08/2009 at 23:18

That is the best idea but if they do go back they need to paint the concrete barriers different colours. Split the track into 6 sections and paint the bariers a different colour in each section. Bob's your race engineer

Evening all. Or should I say morning now..

Anyway, I have returned from seeing a good band who are also very nice people. My sister and her boyfriend have seen them several times around London because their friend is in the band, and they've got to know the rest of 'em... and tonight they played near me, so we went along. A good time was had even though I am sober as I had to drive...

Interesting numbers. I like the amount of extra fuel Badoer would have to have carried to match Kimi's time. He could have a couple of extra engines with all that weight.

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 00:01

If he did, that would affect his performance a little because there would be more of a correction to make. I didn't see which of Hamilton's laps was fastest (or indeed whether anyone else was fastest on a lap other than their final one).

He abandoned his final lap (with race fuel) and he was safe

    I like the amount of extra fuel Badoer would have to have carried to match Kimi’s time. He could have a couple of extra engines with all that weight. {Comment #100}

He could probably have carried one and may have benefited from it... ...though I think even the FIA would have pulled Ferrari up for such a stunt.

If it's the second of the final run, then Hamilton only had one more lap of fuel when he set fastest time than on the aborted lowest-fuel attempt. It makes a little bit of difference though.

You need ones that are slightly higher on the side you wear down or you'll do ligament damage or stretch your tendons.

It could be down to leg length. I used to see an osteopath who would make you put a piece of cardboard in one shoe to level you out. Definitely need to get expert help.

Badly supporting shoes can cause back pain, hip problems, knee problems, the list is basically endless. Everything is supported on your feet, if you're not holding everything up straight, everything's held at angles that arent' designed to work.

Some of the muscles in your legs are probably more developed than others, a physio would be best placed to identify which groups need developing and they'll give you exercises to strengthen them. Problem solved (usually.....)

What you need is a book in that case, a magazine is for something which evolves reasonably quickly

Someone else suggested those. They might help me get to 5km in the race a week on Thursday but I might be DQ'd for cheating :(

They count every lap the car crosses the start/finish line during a session.

Anyway, I have copied and pasted the data from this spreadsheet from the FIA Media Centre and added it to Drop.io...

This document suggests he took pole on his 12th lap...

It deserves to be preserved imo. In years to come they'll appreciate being able to appreciate their history much more. They'll be asking for all the bits back so they can reassemble it for some national museum.

It won't be the same though. It's like in Liverpool they've reassembled the Cavern with the original bricks but it's not the same as if they'd never demolished it.

They need to preserve a section of it and I think they have done that. Re-building the Cavern was just stupid as it has no real connection with the original. I always find it amazing that one club got so much publicity. It's not like it was the only place they ever played.

  • Pat W23/08/2009 at 01:17

I am aware of who he is, why was Michael Johnson not given a big chunk of wall? Why does Bolt need a truckload? Perhaps he's wants the most unique garden wall in the world..

If he didn't even know what it was then it's ridiculous to just give it away. It really is worth something more culturally than anything else. People revolt against things and destroy symbols of old regimes, it makes those that survive all the more precious for the future.

I could understand if they gave him a brick or a small section in a paperweight but 2 tonnes is ludicrous. Every kid as soon as there old enough to understand should be given a small piece and taught about what it meant

I'm not sure that's necessarily true for me. Certainly not on a race sunday - I don't think anyway :)

I don't always post when I first wake up just because that tends to draw me in and away from the work that I need to do.

Show idea. Since it is the silly season and the time we do fantasy football drafts over here in the states, I think you should combine the two. I think you, Christine, and Mr. C should do a F1 drivers fantasy draft. You each take three teams, the do two rounds and see what team combination you come up with.

  • Paul23/08/2009 at 08:32

This is ridiculous. It's meant to be winter here. It was 25 degrees today.

LOVE IT! It's in! Thanks Dan!

  • Alex Andronov23/08/2009 at 08:40

  • Amy23/08/2009 at 08:42

This is ridiculous. It's meant to be winter here. It was 25 degrees today.

The trick is to not go outside at all and then you have noooo idea what the weather is doing.

  • Dan Brunell23/08/2009 at 08:43

Don't we need to take 4 teams? I mean there will be 13 teams next year.

    Your right.

Also if so bold, you could include a third round for a test driver but I think you might be short on time with that.

  • Alex Andronov23/08/2009 at 08:46

    Your right.

How will we decide the 13th team? Maybe the comments?

  • Dan Brunell23/08/2009 at 08:47

    I like it.

You need to figure out a draft order. May I suggest drawing them out of a hat?

    Ah, the Giggles Method.

  • Alex Andronov23/08/2009 at 08:50

You need to figure out a draft order. May I suggest drawing them out of a hat?

Ah I don't think I get how it works... I was thinking that we would each take turns to fill up our teams from any drivers we can think of?

So we pick our three teams then say Christine goes first and she has team X and picks Tato Head. Then it's Mr C and he has team Y and he can pick any driver except Tato Head. etc.

  • Dan Brunell23/08/2009 at 08:53

So we pick our three teams then say Christine goes first and she has team X and picks Tato Head. Then it's Mr C and he has team Y and he can pick any driver except Tato Head. etc.

You are correct. I was thinking of a way to pick the order between the three of you.

  • Alex Andronov23/08/2009 at 08:54

  • startledbunny23/08/2009 at 09:31

    Morning everybody.

I just found out, I'm the Luca Badoer of Wipeout HD.

  • Lukeh23/08/2009 at 09:31

Good morning all! Yay for parade lap and yay for being able to watch the f1 now!

  • Lukeh23/08/2009 at 09:31

    Morning everybody.

I just found out, I'm the Luca Badoer of Wipeout HD.

Hehehehehe. That game is impossibly hard.

  • Alex Andronov23/08/2009 at 09:32

Morning everyone just joining us :)

Anyone with any predictions for the race?

  • startledbunny23/08/2009 at 09:33

Hehehehehe. That game is impossibly hard.

I'm trying Phantom Class, which is the fastest. I can't turn quick enough.

  • Lukeh23/08/2009 at 09:33

Anyone with any predictions for the race?

    RUBENS!!!!

Ahem...I mean... I think Barrichello has a chance.

  • Dan Brunell23/08/2009 at 09:34

Anyone with any predictions for the race?

    Luca will finish last.

  • startledbunny23/08/2009 at 09:34

Anyone with any predictions for the race?

A McLaren to Win, which one, depends on a certain somebody, wearing a certain item of clothing during the race. :)

I've missed F1 so much this month that I'm really looking forward to a Valencian race. This is clearly what Bernie's objective was in order to make people like it.

  • Paul23/08/2009 at 09:48

    Yay. I'm excited

    Shame it's Valencia

    Very very good point!

  • Alianora La Canta23/08/2009 at 09:50

The difference in fuel between Hamilton and Kovalainen is only one lap - Heikki's final lap was a smidgen slower than his penultimate one.

This is the amount of laps each driver in Q3 did between their fastest lap and returning to parc fermé:

    Hamilton +3

    Kovalainen +2

    Raikkonen +1

    Alonso +2

    Webber +1

    Vettel +1

    Rosberg +1

    Button +1

    Barrichello +1

  • Nick23/08/2009 at 09:59

Just got back home from watching a Seattle Seahawks preseason game.

Go Seahawks! Were they any good?

  • Nick23/08/2009 at 10:00

Will you be streaming live on your streams alex or doing it the traditional way?

  • Alianora La Canta23/08/2009 at 10:01

    Just did a bit of a catch-up, saw the IRL chat about qualifying and noticed the accident hasn’t been mentioned. It has removed two drivers from the entry this weekend as they are in hospital. {Comment #270}

    That sounds horrific...

  • Paul23/08/2009 at 10:02

    That sounds horrific...

It was. Reminded me of Zanardi's crash

  • Alianora La Canta23/08/2009 at 10:04

I am all set for my day because I am wearing my Heikki shirt.

    I feel this can only mean good things for The Heikster. {Comment #280}

My Force India lanyard is within reach and I will put it on for good luck nearer the time...

  • Alianora La Canta23/08/2009 at 10:08

    Anyone with any predictions for the race? {Comment #352}

Hamilton to win at a canter

Kovalainen and Button to have the nearest thing to an exciting tussle that Valencia can produce, with Heikki just taking 2nd.

Webber and Barrichello to dispute 4th and finish in that order

    Alonso to scrape a point

Badoer to be lapped twice but finish

Grosjean to hit a wall and retire after running in a surprisingly strong position

Sutil and Raikkonen to have a "coming-together"

The commentators to sound extremely bored for at least some of the time

  • Neil Denham23/08/2009 at 14:22

Was that a can of red bull???

  • Neil Denham23/08/2009 at 14:24

Wheels and tyres are meant to be precision items. I would love to know how much weight the put on the average wheel. I love the idea of replacing lead with tin for envirnomental reasons. That is beyond stupid

    Why is it stupid?

The tyres aren't 100% balanced. Even aircraft wheels are the same

    Minium :)

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 15:22

They should use ally or something

That would make a lot more sense. Tin comes from alluvial deposits and unbelievable as it sounds there are people blasting away the floor ofthe Brazilian rain forest with high pressure hoses to extract the lead. In Indonesia they are dredging a coral reef for the same reason

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 15:23

    McCoist?

Just point a camera and he will be thre

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 15:23

    Bye Kathi

  • Bassano Clapper23/08/2009 at 15:23

They should use ally or something

Though it is kinda light, is why lead has been favoured for years.

For later... the IndyCar coverage starts in the US at 10pm UK for those watching on a stream.

People in the UK who have Sky Sports, Xtra has it from 10.30pm, and the race starts at 10.50pm. They start their races at crazy points during the hour.

Hey RG! It was a good race I thought, nor eason why :p

In all seriousness I thought it was miles better than 2008 anyways. Still no overtaking though.

Not really. It was marginally better than last year in that a couple of things actually happened, but otherwise a procession. The only good bits were the pit stops. Not good.

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 15:43

Great pic of Kimi and Seb on the F1 website laughing together...

Seb often tries to get close to Kimi, and after the drivers parade in Hungary Heikki jogged to catch up with the Kimster...

    It was quite sweet....

  • Rich23/08/2009 at 15:52

Agreed better race than last year despite no overtaking. In fact cars did not seem to get even close to each other for a look-in. Despite being around the dock it still seems a bit of a dump for a circuit but this year they got better photograph around the track.

  • rg23/08/2009 at 15:55

    yay for super qik timo

  • Lady Snowcat23/08/2009 at 15:56

And Kimi doesn't have a mullet he has just grown his hair full stop....

When he hasn't just been in a hot sweaty race and he doesn't have his cap on it's clear...

I really like his hair this year...

  • Journeyer23/08/2009 at 16:07

    WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!!!!!

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77936

Simple - not enough time to hire a new driver and allow him any kind of time to bed in with the team. Better to keep Luca in for the back-to-back. Monza, though, might be a different story.

  • Scott Woodwiss23/08/2009 at 16:08

    LDM owes Badoer for something

I don't care if he owes him a million quid. He sucks and has to be replaced. Now.

  • Journeyer23/08/2009 at 16:08

    LDM owes Badoer for something

Yes - he owes him for 1999. ;)

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 16:08

Ferrari have officially lost the plot in my opinion.

He is not going to dump him live on TV without talking to him first and saying anything other than he expects him to be in the car would have that effect.

  • Nick23/08/2009 at 16:09

He is not going to dump him live on TV without talking to him first and saying anything other than he expects him to be in the car would have that effect.

I agree, he didint say defiantly, and he also said he will be in a ferrari. I belive they have company cars

  • Bassano Clapper23/08/2009 at 16:11

Yes - he owes him for 1999. ;)

Well, you can see why they didn't use him back then

  • Rich23/08/2009 at 16:14

I agree, he didint say defiantly, and he also said he will be in a ferrari. I belive they have company cars

I think you will hear that Luca has decided that personal issues will prevent him from continuing to race and to thank Luca and the team for the opportunity. It will seem to be his decision which we all know to be hogwash. There is a chance they will keep him for Spa due to time constraints. PK senior will be frantically calling Ferrari to organise that they consider PK junior (who in truth would have done a better job).

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 16:18

I think you will hear that Luca has decided that personal issues will prevent him from continuing to race and to thank Luca and the team for the opportunity. It will seem to be his decision which we all know to be hogwash.

They will probably say that because he has not raced for so long that he found the physical strain more than he expected and his neck is not up to it.

  • Rich23/08/2009 at 16:22

They will probably say that because he has not raced for so long that he found the physical strain more than he expected and his neck is not up to it.

and of course they could add with no in-season testing it has not helped.

  • Bassano Clapper23/08/2009 at 16:31

and of course they could add with no in-season testing it has not helped.

of course he is a good driver, dont let his suffering under flav distract you. ;)

  • Rich23/08/2009 at 16:32

Or just say, we made a mistake - he was terrible :)

They will not do that - I think the number of mistakes was more significant than his slowness - making both is too much.

Flav had the same effect on Heikki

He seems to be just too demanding in terms of driver quality.

    WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!!!!!

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77936

Didn’t we know almost all of that during the coverage?

That quote was from the beeb coverage...

I think you'll find Stephano isn't the type to say stuff on TV before talking to the driver...

He said they'd discuss it and it was "likely" Luca would drive...

He knows they won't use him but didn't want to tell the beeb first....

They will not do that - I think the number of mistakes was more significant than his slowness - making both is too much.

I would go the other way on that. A couple of spins an lack of concentration coming out of the pits can be sorted. If a driver is fast and erratic you can harness the speed and make him better like Rob did with Massa but if he is slow there is nothing you can do. If a driver of his age and experience is 2 seconds a lap off the pace with a full weekend's running then he is not going to get significantly better.

Right, I must bid you guys farewell for a week or so. I'm off to my dad's in about an hour and he's currently got no internet so I'll try and pop in on my lunch breaks via iPhone during the week. Take care of yourselves and I'll see you guys in a week. I'm off to go pack. Bye! :)

Kathi crashed through the 10k barrier with 10799 points

Team Brainstorm also broke through 10K but are 774 points behind couchpotato.

Sidepodcast continue to dominate the private leagues with 9481.8 points followed by Autosport on 8771.4 amd Hello F1 in 3rd with 8702.8

Team Victory or bust made a little progress today moving up to 192nd with good scores for Kimi and Lewis and with Jenson and Bobby K contributing points. However little Seb has been sent to bed early and is grounded until Friday for blowing up 2 engines this weekend.

I have grabbed some headlines for you. If you want anything wlse let me know and I will get it since you are probably busy

  • Lukah23/08/2009 at 16:56

#FR - A mixed day for Formula Muse. Whilst we are now 100th spot on, the last time I checked I was about 80th. however this was 3 races ago, so since then, I can assume our team dropped down to 500th and since then have made a wonderful recovery like true champions. This was no doubt thanks to our fantastic young talent, Rubens Barrichello, who will be a driver to watch with eager eyes in the future.

  • Christine23/08/2009 at 16:57

I have grabbed some headlines for you. If you want anything wlse let me know and I will get it since you are probably busy

In a young driver I would agree with you, but in a veteran driver? The mistakes suggest to me that Luca is too rusty to be allowed to drive an F1 car. At the start with KERS he got to 14th - if he had consolidated that position he would have secured 13th with Vettel's retirement. This is a circuit with no-overtaking s that result would have satisfied me if I were the boss. Today, Badoer was a total embarrassment.

One team on the biggest followers list is Longitudinal Inertia entered by Mr Christine which dropped 301 places having scored 200 points.

One team on the biggest climbers list is commenter shindigthighslapper whose team rose 306 places with a score of 652

    I will try.

Oh my gosh I just watched back on my qik live streaming of rubens winning. It will cause serious motion sickness I think from all the jumping about and shouting in excitement...

  • Christine23/08/2009 at 17:03

We would also like to talk about the 2010 Fantasy Racers beta trial thing. I know nothing about it and Mr C has lost the URL.

    Help!

  • Lukah23/08/2009 at 17:04

Blame the parade lap and the confusion between 'Luca' Badoer and my username :P

the url is http://www.fsports.co.uk/fantasyracers2010/ and the rue changes are at http://fantasyracers.com/game/ideasfor2010.php (the scores haven't been updated yet)

Longitudinal Inertia are in 381st place after scoring 200 points today for a season's total of 4955.

Sidepodcast Racers score 532 points for a total of 6947 and are in 107th

  • Rich23/08/2009 at 17:08

    #FR

Team Sandbagging is in a downward spiral despite a fairly new driver line up. Today the team scored only 539 points but is still in top 100 of the Sidepodcast league. It could have been worse because Hamilton was drafted in to replace Button. After having Robert and Fernando on the team all year they were dropped only for both to score points.

I don't get this 2010 thing, is it a trial run of next year's FR rules?

If there is variable pricing I won't be entering

  • Steven Roy23/08/2009 at 17:09

No-one has anything to say about their Fantasy Racers team? I don't believe it. If you have a comment / press release from your team remember to mark it #FR

  • Rachel23/08/2009 at 17:10

#fr after a disastrous showing at Hungary, Empty Stands bounced back with their greatest performance this year. The two and a half Finns finished strongly in the points, as did home favourite Alonso, whilst Sutil failed to capatalise on a strong showing in practice still managed to pick up a good points haul. The team are still happy to be not last.

It keeps people interested and I have found that I now notice what dribers are scoring points as a result.

Awww just replaying my recorded race footage (so I can see the interviews and stuffs, not the race!) and it went all fuzzy just at the bit Rubens did his dance so I've still missed it. Gutted :(

Massa, who contributed to Brazilian television channel TV Globo's coverage of the event via SMS text, added: "I followed the race also by my laptop, taking a close look at the live timing.
