It is both qualifying day and Franck day today, as there is the small matter of a Petit Le Mans race to attend to later. Before that though, I am looking forward to my first lie in for a while. How are you guys spending your weekend? Here are some things to discuss if you're bored:

  • We put up the last in our current batch of Interviews with Bloggers yesterday, this time with Maverick from Pitlane Fanatic. Don't forget to submit your answers if you're an F1 blogger and want to have a go. There's also an F1 Digest if you're interested in what happened out on track yesterday, and in non-F1 news, there's also a new Media Future Change podcast to listen to.
  • We finally finished the 100 Reasons to Watch F1 list, with lots and lots of help from you guys out there. I think I only completed two in the end. Very good! Read the full list here, plus a blog post on the subject. I will get on and add my £10 to the donations list then.
  • If you participate in the Sofa F1 Pole Poll, don't forget to submit your predictions for the upcoming weekend. Mr C likes to leave it to the last minute, because he has turned into some kind of competitive crazy person. The rest of us can just treat as a bit of fun, as per usual.

That'll do it for now. There'll be plenty more in the way of live commenting threads and podcasts today, plus we'll put up the poll for the Sidepodradio charity selection as well. I will see you in the comments.

I'm off to sleep! (potentially without ear plugs for the first time this week), but before i depart i shall leave you with a few classic lines that my girlfriend has just spouted...

    "I'm not Gollum"

"If someone says nothing is impossible, they obviously haven't tried nailing jelly to a tree"

"As things get older they get better, accept Banana's"

Not surprised. Sir Martin and JYS are close friends, and they probably have a pretty similar viewpoint on things.

    Morning, everyone.

Renault have lost their sponsors, we still dont know what Alonso is doing, and Sauber will user ferrari engines if they race next year.

@Steve Roy: I got to meet Dr. Schmitt of Apollo 17 fame two days ago. A really interesting and nice guy. He spoke a lot about trying to get the American space program back on track, what made the space program work, and the moon as a source of alternative energy. If you are really bored and want to her what he says, here is a link to the state public affairs channel that was at the event. He starts in at 05:40. Isn't Sir Martin a former bigwig at Ford Europe? I heard his name a couple of times during the Stewart-Ford and Jaguar eras.

First Max's revenge, now Jackie's.... I wonder if F1 will ever run out of scores to be settled?

He runs a company called Magma or something like that. It tried to buy Rover I think. I am not certain but I know they tried to buy a few companies.

So the big motoring execs have finally had enough. It's about time. Seems the Renault guys have worked out they were asleep on the watch as well.

It probably will - the previous generation of F1 bigwigs is beginning to bowing out (Ron, Max, Flav - I count the new FIA president as the new generation even if its Todt). The only folks of the old guard left are Frank, Patrick, LDM, and Bernie.

Was it Joe or Autosport who were theorising Bernie were keeping 'friends close, enemy's closer'. Sounds about right, he has a pretty cagey answer to who he is friends with in last months f1 racing, i wonder if he knew the fuse had been lit, he certainly knew there was a bomb.

Thanks. He was a really interesting guy. After looking at several things, I am starting to think that space might be the next big economic driver beyond nanotechnologies later in this century. There is starting to be some real potential out in space for a person with enough vision, money, and patience.

There are all sorts of economic opportunities from tourism to minerals to anything you can possibly imagine but it will need private companies to develop vehicles that don't need a 3 month service every time they fly.

  • Steven Roy26/09/2009 at 02:55

Not any more. I have my sanity back. Them little floaty people were not going to beat me. I just hope no-one ever comes up with meeblings 3.

And like Lou I am not really competitve. I could have walked away from it any time.

There are all sorts of economic opportunities from tourism to minerals to anything you can possibly imagine but it will need private companies to develop vehicles that don't need a 3 month service every time they fly.

I think it will come faster than many of us will think. Put it this way, the Shuttle is a 35 year old design. With Branson and others getting into the tourism game, I think many will see the potential of current technology applied sooner than later. Some people in the crowd I went drinking with later that night, including some people from Boeing. We figured over a few glasses of wine (or scotch in my case) that developing a commercially viable craft that can go to the moon and back are no harder than the problems they have developing the 787. The question is the market. Someone needs to show the market.

  • Steven Roy26/09/2009 at 03:00

yes, just finished breakfast, jacuzzi and swimming pool. sorting out Friday pics :-)

You must have the opposite problem with the time shift to all the people who went there from Europe.

Did you get any pics of Grosjean going off at Piquet corner?

The problems are far from insoluable. I would not be surprised if the Branson paraboli tourists flights turn into Londo to Sydney or New Yourk to Tokyo parabolic flights.

It's basically 50 years since the first manned space flight but still every flight is treated as needing millions of man hours of effort to prepare the vehicle. That should be down to something routine by now.

I expect in 5 years time there will be 5 to 10 companies flying in space and as soon as they are doing passenger flights there is no reason for them not to go to the ISS or for that matter the moon.

I think designing a moon base and industrialising the moon wil be far more complicated than making a vehicle to shuttle back and forward from the moon.

It's funny, Rockwell and Boeing were a little bit too far ahead of its' time on the X-30 and the X-40 projects. The only thing about getting a parabolic passenger fight effort off the ground is the airlines themselves. The margins are already to low and capital just isn't their to assist people like Boeing and Airbus to take a chance on a market. I have the feeling if it was to come together it might be something like the Concord where the production is subsidized as a public venture and only in limited numbers on limited routes like London to NYC, NYC to LA, LA to Tokyo, Tokyo to London, and ect.

  • Dan Brunell26/09/2009 at 03:21

I don't see it as something for everyone but I can see a few billionaire's specials for starters. It would make it possible to have a meeting on the other side of th world but still sleep in your own bed that night. I always assumed this was one of the end games of the Branson / Burt Rutan project.

Just a thought, it would be strange, but it would be almost be faster to travel to London to LA or London to Singapore because it give the craft distance to build up speed. Just insane.

If Branson can do it, it will be one of the most amazing private venture story since Microsoft and Apple Computer.

THe way I see it is the ascent and descent are the same but the distance is covered essentially outwith the atmosphere so there should be little difference in the cost of taking of in New Mexico and returning there or landing in Sydney. It takes on the fuel necessary to maintain the speed.

    Good question. Wolf?

If I were to guess, I'd say Singapore would be more expensive by 25-50%.

it is a good point. I am nervous that we will get back to the times of a few winners and a whole lot of losers. However, I think with the standardized engines (well to an extent) will keep the grid closer then it was in the mid 1990's I think.

I think the grid will look like the late 1970's and the early 1980's when you have the Cosworth DVF and the Ferrari engine... and well that is about it. It created some pretty close and exciting racing.

well Lewis isn't going anywhere, it's only a Heikki-replacement they need. I don't care about who the test driver is since Pedalo appears to be moving :)

I have no idea. Silly season has got to the point where I'm just like HURRY UP AND ANNOUNCE SOMETHING, SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, PLEASE.

@byronf1 says "Please excuse me being vague but methinks a major announcement is coming from Ferrari shortly"

but it's probably something unrelated to drivers and I will just have to wait and go crazy for a few more weeks.

  • Journeyer26/09/2009 at 09:08

I'm the same. At the moment I don't have the time to keep much of an idea on F1 at all so I just want the Alonso statement and then we can all move on ;)

just checked the italian ferrari news site. just a new watch for sale and some statements about yesterday. F1 needs a big announcement this weekend to start the renewal process.

Bassano - now I can agree with you! I caught the one month after party for one of the Palio celebrations. It was awesome walking around and chatting with the local about their win, and how much it meant to them.

Amy - if you can, try and see the Palio, this crazy horse race - happens once in July and once in August.

Fine by me. Had the longest lie-in since forever today. Happy girl.

I was going to say 'did you get out of bed at 5pm too?' but its not even 5 there yet.

    That's not helping, is it? :P :D

Oh, we did get your Petit Le Mans post, by the way. Was saving it for the live commenting thread, is that right?

  • Christine26/09/2009 at 10:24

I was going to say 'did you get out of bed at 5pm too?' but its not even 5 there yet.

I don't think I could stay in bed till 5pm unless I was ill.

  • Amy26/09/2009 at 10:26

I don't think I could stay in bed till 5pm unless I was ill.

the trick is to go to bed at 6am.

(I really need to sort out my sleep :( )

  • Christine26/09/2009 at 10:27

the trick is to go to bed at 6am.

(I really need to sort out my sleep :( )

I see. That doesn't really count as a lie-in then, or does it? I always figured a lie-in was when you got your normal sleep plus a little bit extra.

Of course, normal sleep is a bit tricky for you :)

  • Scott Woodwiss26/09/2009 at 10:27

Oh, we did get your Petit Le Mans post, by the way. Was saving it for the live commenting thread, is that right?

Yeah that's fine :) Just thought I'd ask since I hadn't seen anything come up yet :)

  • Scott Woodwiss26/09/2009 at 10:28

You'll be even happier if Franck wins, I bet :D

  • Amy26/09/2009 at 10:28

Of course, normal sleep is a bit tricky for you :)

I was thinking of going to bed straight after qualy since its 2 hours later than usual, but what about the weights? I must know these or I will not sleep!

  • Scott Woodwiss26/09/2009 at 10:31

Yeah that's fine :) Just thought I'd ask since I hadn't seen anything come up yet :)

Also, just as I pointed out in the e-mail, you're free to change or take out or add anything if need be. I know the post ended up being a bit long! :P

  • Christine26/09/2009 at 10:31

You'll be even happier if Franck wins, I bet :D

Absolutely! I haven't seen that happen before. We'd have to have a Franck party, I reckon.

Absolutely! I haven't seen that happen before. We'd have to have a Franck party, I reckon.

He won that race in the ALMS for Acura. But you're right, this would be the first time you'd actually see him cross the line in first, presuming he does so today which he should :P

  • Scott Woodwiss26/09/2009 at 10:33

thats why I really really want him to win this year, because he is on his way out and if hes in F1 next year odds are it won't be with a front running team. Jenson has more chances left than Rubens.

Renault might be good for him... If not Sauber or Williams could be options... i think he should get a drive, i guess he is on the Kubica roundabout as opposed to the Alonso one

Ted Kravitz "Do you still count that as a race victory?"

    Nando "Yes"

TK "Even though the team fixed the race?"

    Nando "It's open to interpretation..."

    NO ITS NOT

  • Jon Waldock26/09/2009 at 17:19

You did try and use a hand blender in a TINY bowl though.... WHY?

Nooo, it was a big bowl

  • Alison26/09/2009 at 17:21

I'm with her. Looks like a bowl that you'd press the button on the mixer and everything would splatter out of it :D

  • Alison26/09/2009 at 17:22

    NO ITS NOT

I dunno though. Accepting that he had nothing to do with the fix, you'd be as well removing Nico's 2nd place or Hamilton's 3rd. He still had to drive a good race to win. He had a barnstormer.

  • Jon Waldock26/09/2009 at 17:23

If you're talking about the bowl in the picture then errrm no.

Oh yeah, i think he should keep it, but he should acknowledge that the fact that his win was fixed is not open to interpretation

  • Alison26/09/2009 at 17:25

Oh yeah, i think he should keep it, but he should acknowledge that the fact that his win was fixed is not open to interpretation

Hah, the fix didn't guarantee him the win. I think that was his point. I think he probably could have conceded that he couldn't have won without it though.

    What happened to Jenson?

well, he was doing okay with set up in Q1, but wasn't that happy so took on board a little bit more of Rubens and basically tweaked it a bit, but it was the wrong move so struggled more in Q2.. and by more i mean alot, and wasn't able to get out of Q2.. the light fuel loads probably didn't help either, because the car never likes light fuel runs...

no the pdf is actually made properly - if you look at the text all the numbers and text is inside. that's how i wrote the scripts which worked for 2 races. it is the only online pdf that the fia produce with F1 that is done this way. all others are created, then scanned. possibly to stop people like me stripping out the info for websites etc

  • Alianora La Canta26/09/2009 at 20:34

    Why is Liuzzi fuelled so light at the back, he’ll get trapped won’t he? {Comment #400}

I suspect so - but there are two scenarios where that trick may work:

    a) he makes a lightning start and makes up a fistful of places, or

    b) there's a Safety Car before he stops; he'll only be in a few seconds longer than the ones fuelled normally and have got the troublesome soft tyres out of the way. If the drivers round him struggle on the softs, Tonio can pick them off in the remaining pit sequence, or possibly even overtake.

  • Alianora La Canta26/09/2009 at 20:37

    Is he allowed to start 10th? {Comment #421}

If Brawn can fix the car using only identical parts to the ones damaged and without replacing the gearbox, then Rubens may start 10th.

Gearbox replacements will result in a 5-place grid drop. Non-identical part replacement means a pit lane start.

If the engine needs replacement, there will be no penalty but the engine removed can't be used again until Abu Dhabi.

  • Alianora La Canta26/09/2009 at 20:39

    I feel guilty for saying this but I want him to start in the pits {Comment #423}

He'd have been beaten though if it wasn't for the red flag. But yeah, he was flying on that amount of fuel.

Anyway, have a read and let me know what you think ;)

i think it runs as a virtual machine, doesn't affect your current os.

All I want tomorrow is for Rubens to just get past turn 1 and away from Grosjean

he's already got 1 Brawn... I can see what his masterplan is

still stopped? you can tell i've not been paying attention. tbh i still can't choose between photography and psychology for uni and i've been searching through courses and the like for ages now, and just fancied finding out more about f1 photography. they are probably all super busy though :( i'll probably get replies by like december if at all and by then it will be too late to help...

  • lou26/09/2009 at 23:05

    I really want rain tomorrow!

based on what happened in singapore last year during fp1 (?) with the rain i think that would be erm... interesting...

Why does every one presume Grosjean is going to wreck someones rear wing or summit? He's only done it once.

  • Lukeh26/09/2009 at 23:08

    109th...

    I hate tiredness.

Keep bugging them but I wouldn't e-mail them on a race weekend as they have less time to deal with it. All those that you have e-mailled during a race weekend you should e-mail again on the Tuesday or Wednesday after a free weekend especially if there is not a race that week. You need to try to catch them when they are not busy.

What you have done is not wrong and may work but you have to give yourself the best chance of them thinking about your message. If I would you I would have a look at the calendar and find a suitable date so you can plan who you are going to contact. Send e-mails to anyone you have already e-mailed and put in a comment that you are re-mailing them because they may have missed your earlier message. Keep bugging them but be polite and not annoying.

  • lou26/09/2009 at 23:09

oh... is that in front or behind Jenson?...

i emailed many of them at the beginning of the summer break.. so i'm guessing they are constantly busy?..

but he blamed Jenson.. when... oh you know ;) i'm thinking he may or may not blame the corner for his spin the other day ;)

i'm sure he wouldn't be as silly as to hit jenson again ;)

  • Steven Roy26/09/2009 at 23:12

Send them a follow up when there is a suitable date next. If you get people on the wrong day they may read the message and decide to deal with it later but never get back to it.

  • Alison26/09/2009 at 23:12

ah okay. Darren Heath was very good with a response when i emailed him last year, cause he emailed me about a month after i sent him a message, from bahrain! so i was happy :) if i don't get a single response by the end of the season i'll email them again :) thanks

  • Lukeh26/09/2009 at 23:14

I don't rate him at all. And because of that, I know karma will bite me and he'll end up taking Rubens out

i'm going to say it will depend on how Jenson's race goes... if it goes badly then yeah i'd be worried about Grosjean too ;) if it goes well then you've got nothing to worry about.

  • Steven Roy26/09/2009 at 23:17

Don't wait till the end of the season. They will go on holiday then and if they check e-mails while they are away they will ignore yours till they get back and then they have 3 weeks worth of e-mail etc. If they are not checking e-mails it will be worse. Try and get them before the end of the season then do another batch 6 weeks after the season unless that puts us near a holiday time.

  • lou26/09/2009 at 23:19
