We have reached Friday and it is Free Practice day in Singapore. Things have been about Renault all week, so it would be nice if some other teams got a mention. We'll start that now:

  • Mario Theissen has confirmed that if the team-formerly-known-as-BMW can get a place on the grid in 2010, then they will be running Ferrari engines. They are clearly still working really hard to get things sorted for next year, but what are the chances of the FIA playing ball?
  • Red Bull are still sure that bizarre things happened to their gearbox last year and are taking extra precautions this year. Apparently the solution involves bolting an extra metal plate under the gearbox to try and avoid any rogue tram line electricity.
  • Button says that he isn't even allowing himself to contemplate the possibility of winning the title, even though it could be his anytime soon. He's going into it one race at a time, and only looking that far ahead. It's the right thing to say, but he can't possibly have not thought about it. Not possible.

That'll do it for now. Free Practice starts a little bit later than usual, but we'll have all the normal threads up and in the right place. I will see you in the comments.

they let us in their garage for three days, no questions asked.

no other team has, or will likely ever come close to how cool they are in my eyes. regardless of what they do/have done.

I can't help but wonder if this is all a giant episode of F1 Scooby Doo though Heck, I can even imagine Flav and Pat getting caught by the scruff of the necks, standing there shaking their fists proclaiming 'And we woudda gota away with it if it weren't for those meddlin' Piquets!'

  • Bassano Clapper24/09/2009 at 23:37

At my best estimate, it's 7 years old! That's well beyond the normal life of an iPod. It's probably ready for retirement.... It's probably worth something as an antique by now.

its quite a story. As a kid my mum cooked meals and always had too much rice so there was not enough food to mix with the bland plainness of the rice. So i decided i didnt like rice and didnt eat it for years. Now i think its all in my head because i still say i dont like it but when my flat mate books bengali food i love it and i always make rice to go with my favourite meal ever which is beef stroganoff and im also a fan of butter chicken with rice. So really when i say i dont like it i am lying and still think its the early 90s

(grey stroganoff, not red) (although red is also good)

There is grey stoganoff which is super yummy and one of my favourites and red which i guess is more normal and what you get at cafe's and restaurants

I had it once at a antony worrall thompson's pub (he is a tv cheff with a pretentious name) It was the second best thing i have ever eaten!

a few people are what bernie would call "casual fans" because they seem to know who wins occasionally. My team leader only found out recently that i am a fan, he was a fan in the 90s and really liked villeneuve, ugh.

Our family is trying to do different circuits before we repeat any of them. Korea was our first choice, but it's now unlikely (it's in October, our summer is March-May). We're now looking at China for 2010 (assuming we don't go to the US for a family thingy) and Melbourne for 2011.

china's the cheapest, that's why it's top of the list. if that weren't a factor, melbourne would easily be tops. but alas, we're not stinky-rich. :)

Hopefully not - the top 2 airlines from here to shanghai have cheap flights (one is a sister company of my mom's work; the other is a sister company of my dad's work). the hotel is owned by my mom's company. that should cancel out most of the costs. :)

what's so special about his pasta?

  • Scott in Italy25/09/2009 at 07:26

2 hrs and 34 minutes until free practice 1 - and when somebody no doubt will schedule a meeting.

  • Amy25/09/2009 at 07:26

I was hungry, it was the middle of the night, he was having pasta. Made sense at the time ;)

if anyone is a fan of The Editors, there is a remix of the new single freely available on the NME site. Album comes out 13th October. I'm a fan.

and now I need to disappear for bit. ciao.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/09/2009 at 07:31

morning Gavin - what's so wrong about today?

Everything. Train was 1 hour late (so twice as long), which also means that I miss breakfast on Danish Pastry day. Now the coffee machine is broken too.

Should have stayed in bed :(

Firstly, I'm sorry things are not working out so far. Danish Pastry Day? what special things happen on those days?

Be optimistic - your day should get better.

going AWOL now to venture across the river to the empire of the city...trying to make this sound more interesting that in it....

I see ING and Mutua Madrilena have withdrawn sponsorship of Renault - did they see Lukah's mock up of the Renault logo with the CheatING?

Lukeh said he wasn't the one who did that, oddly enough. Lukeh did do a mockup of an ING-less Renault, though.

Ah, we have different names for stuff here. The 'glazed apple Danish' is a Spandauer, and the snail certainly is a Danish. I'm not sure about the copenhagen bread but it is a sweet pastry.

Short of Brunsviger, this is what myu wife's family also refer to as 'Danish'...

  • Alex Andronov25/09/2009 at 07:51

Really? Or is that just for the lawyers? ;-)

  • Alex Andronov25/09/2009 at 07:53

Did we see Kubica's comments from yesterday?

"Yeah, normally if you go the police and you say you killed someone but you know someone else who killed three people, you will still go to jail," Kubica told reporters in Singapore.

It's not on the side of the nose anymore. It's just on the top of the nose, the engine cover, the sidepods, the rear wing, and probably the front wing too, is all. ;)

Would it be good/bad/neither here nor there for F1 if Renault won in Singapore this weekend?

  • Scott in Italy25/09/2009 at 08:40

Would it be good/bad/neither here nor there for F1 if Renault won in Singapore this weekend?

I'm thinking bad because it means the story will stick around for even longer. I hope for F1's sake they turn up midway in those uninteresting positions in the middle.

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 08:42

Would it be good/bad/neither here nor there for F1 if Renault won in Singapore this weekend?

It would be good, I think, to show that they can legitimately take a win.

  • Maverick25/09/2009 at 08:43

Just thought, they also have to remove the ING from www.ing-renaultf1.com

Laughing at the end of Renault's last press release on Wednesday:

The Renault F1 Team is now ready to concentrate on the future and wishes to stress that no further comments or statements will be issued relating to the events of Singapore 2008.

The sponsors seem to have other ideas.

I think it would be bad, because Rubens doesn't drive for them.

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 08:45

Would it be good/bad/neither here nor there for F1 if Renault won in Singapore this weekend?

They don't actually have the speed to win, though, do they? So it would be an 'unusual' race if they did, and I think that would be bad.

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 08:46

how sweet for Nelson if they win, and keep winning now that flavio is gone. Then he (PK) can say that Flab was holding them back. Of course, the correct response will be to point out that PK isn't there either...

That would almost be a respectful thing to do, but Bernie would have none of it.

  • Scott in Italy25/09/2009 at 09:00

That would almost be a respectful thing to do, but Bernie would have none of it.

I think Bernie would even stick on a driversuit and jump up there instead. But he might be the same height as the trophy and then there could be an awkward moment where the prime minister of the country tries to pick him up and give him to one of the drivers.

  • Amy25/09/2009 at 09:00

I thought I'd be OK because they have a proper sole but once I got more than about 4m from my front door the water was a lot deeper than it looked and all the fur got soaked. Will take a while for them to dry too :(

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 09:01

That would almost be a respectful thing to do, but Bernie would have none of it.

Wouldn't that just net them a penalty for not following podium protocol?

Renault can't really help it. If they do anything very good (or very bad), they get noticed. If the race gets boring, they'll be the topic of conversation. Not good for them either way.

I'm cynical and would guess the latter.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/09/2009 at 09:07

I think this is exactly the reason that MM and ING pulled out, isn't it?

It is, but like Mr C said before, they should have pulled out the minute they admitted everything.

I agree - the contracts were broken at that exact moment...

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 09:07

It is, but like Mr C said before, they should have pulled out the minute they admitted everything.

Perhaps there's a reason it had to wait until yesterday? Maybe legal discussions and all that?

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 09:07

In reality, either that or they become more careful they don't get caught.

The public reaction seems to have done more damage than the FIA, at least.

  • Scott in Italy25/09/2009 at 09:08

I think this is exactly the reason that MM and ING pulled out, isn't it?

It wasn't hard for ING - only four races ahead of what they were going to do anyway. hey - when did they announce they were pulling out - was it about the same time as Singapore 2008?

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 09:09

Perhaps there's a reason it had to wait until yesterday? Maybe legal discussions and all that?

Who knows? Those contracts must be very tricky things.

It wasn't hard for ING - only four races ahead of what they were going to do anyway. hey - when did they announce they were pulling out - was it about the same time as Singapore 2008?

I'll answer my own question. late Jan 2009 was when they announced. I wonder if they knew though....

Renault can't really help it. If they do anything very good (or very bad), they get noticed. If the race gets boring, they'll be the topic of conversation. Not good for them either way.

And Legard is going to mention Piquet's crash everytime they go past turn 17 anyway, remember

You can be sure they already do the latter. This was amateur time from the moment they sacked Piquet.

  • Scott in Italy25/09/2009 at 09:21

I asked Le BOL if he was going to change his name now there is no Lion or ING in the team and he said 'no', BTW...

he was the blue lion before ing came along.

i forget what the lion bit represents, but we first met him when renault were blue and yellow.

  • Alex Andronov25/09/2009 at 09:22

This is very true. While some countries have the concept of plea-bargaining, getting out of major punishment that way hasn't worked in Europe since the days of the Revolution...

I'm sure there are recent examples - if they don't go to court then there is nothing for the press to cover.

  • Alison25/09/2009 at 09:45

Of course you can make a plea bargain. One of my friends smashed into a parked car while a sliver under the drink drive limit. She could have gone to court to defend herself and risked jail, severe fines etc but instead she admitted she was responsible and had to attend a driver improvement course.

Does anyone else think that Grosjean is struggling? I am also thinking Tim is struggling, they each appear to have taken a different strategies - Grosjean wrestling the car and crashing a lot and Tim simply not wanting to make any mistakes. I really wish they would allow in season testing (at least for reserve and new drivers). Having drivers without recent experience makes me a little nervous.

You haven't read Christine' blog either. I am shocked. It looks like I am the only person who does.

I read it too... I left comments also... honest!

    Heheh.

Sorry if I was bellyaching a bit too much in the comments/twitter last night.

  • Alex Andronov25/09/2009 at 15:34

    Heheh.

Sorry if I was bellyaching a bit too much in the comments/twitter last night.

    You finished the game?

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 15:35

    Heheh.

Sorry if I was bellyaching a bit too much in the comments/twitter last night.

No way we were worried you werent commenting enough!

So long as you are safe!

  • RG25/09/2009 at 15:35

    On something like level 40

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 15:36

We were a bit worried as to why you missed the 1pm train!

My own stupidity! I went for a walk.

On balance it might have been the best thing because I don't know if I would have been okay to drive when I got off at the other end.

  • Steven Roy25/09/2009 at 15:36

    On something like level 40

I am on 49 and it is impossible. Absolutely definitely impossible

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 15:37

No way we were worried you werent commenting enough!

My phone battery was dying so I had to switch the thing off, which was a bit annoying.

  • James25/09/2009 at 15:39

Whoever dreamt up level 49 is sick in the head. I will never get through that

    I'm stuck on 18 :(

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 15:40

Giancarlo Minardi has apparently released some sort of statement claiming the ban on briatorie was too harsh

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 15:42

My own stupidity! I went for a walk.

On balance it might have been the best thing because I don't know if I would have been okay to drive when I got off at the other end.

I wandered London for a while. Interesting seeing a mix of drunken people, and people working on things you wouldn't expect them to be working on. I saw a man varnishing a restaurant chair in Covent Garden at 1.30am.

I got the 5.30am train and the rocking made me ill at first so I'd hate to think what the earlier one would have done.

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 15:42

Looking at the Grosjean crash at PK corner - you can't make this stuff up if you tried!

  • Steven Roy25/09/2009 at 15:45

    Just did 49. Insane

At least that show the difference between a natural crash there and a manufactured one. He gout out of the throttle and hit the outside all and didn't get the same degree of rotation.

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 15:47

    odd!

  • Amy25/09/2009 at 16:04

    odd!

first it was last years model, now its his team mates....they really didn't make enough for him :D

  • Alison25/09/2009 at 16:04

Unfortuantely I've never heard of it.

    :( That's not a link :(

I looked them up on Google before and their website looks distinctly dodgy. They provide the qualification that I get at the end of my Italian course. It's not that important to me as I'm going to improve not to be qualified (ironically, I am qualified but my standard of speaking is very poor) I was just really curious as I hadn't heard of them.

  • Journeyer25/09/2009 at 16:04

why is Heikki wearing a Lewis hat :D

I've seen Alonso wear a Trulli hat in their Renault days. Probably had no Heikki caps on hand... ;)

In all my years of trying, I have never found a photo of the three of them together. It might cause my heart to stop if it ever happens.

Sorry... would have updated you more but the battery ran low.

If I'd taken the earlier train I would have been very ill on it (as it was I was only slightly ill on the other one), and would have had to wait in Dorchester until I could drive... so I was doing a lot of pacing around London instead. Turns out it was a lot colder at this end too.

Maybe. Some people only get certain types of racing. Some other types just don't do anything for them.

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 17:27

    But UK time?

    4.15pm

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 17:28

That is to say, 15min after F1 qual finishes..

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/09/2009 at 17:29

    But UK time?

    4.15pm

Sounds good - finish at 2am. Find a stream and I can do that...

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 17:32

Maybe it's the series .. cause I'm not supporting McNish either

Perhaps we should do what we did with the IRL and all choose/be randomly assigned drivers?

  • Alex Andronov25/09/2009 at 17:32

    Just you I think

I have tried turning it off and turning it back on again.

    Worked great!

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 17:40

Sounds good - finish at 2am. Find a stream and I can do that...

Should not be a problem but with RLM you don't really need a picture.

    evening everyone.

Hey.. I may not be here too much, i am working on the worlds longest blog post...

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 18:02

So much for Manor signing PK... i knew it was too good to be true.

However that is a pretty bold quote from that guy which could be used agaisnt him later on. Perhaps he could have made his point more tactfully?

However that is a pretty bold quote from that guy which could be used agaisnt him later on. Perhaps he could have made his point more tactfully?

he didn't say he wouldn't have piquet. just nobody that cheats.

  • me25/09/2009 at 18:07

he didn't say he wouldn't have piquet. just nobody that cheats.

in fact that is an awful autosport article. both the title and this line:

"but said that Piquet could never be associated with the brand."

tai does not say that at all? he could've been referring to symonds for example.

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 18:09

in fact that is an awful autosport article. both the title and this line:

If it was me, I would have gone with the headline: Someone in F1 with actual morals!!!

"I don't believe it is professional to in any way talk about our plans while we are sponsoring another team this year..."

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 18:09

he didn't say he wouldn't have piquet. just nobody that cheats.

What i meant is though if say the team had an infringment like we have seen this season like the moveable wings, unseccured wheelnuts, or something like the double diffuser if it was ruled illegal.

Would he not (theoretically) be required to sack those responsible?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/09/2009 at 18:09

Helps though! I wanna do another Sebring...

  • me25/09/2009 at 18:09

If it was me, I would have gone with the headline: Someone in F1 with actual morals!!!

    hehe. agreed.

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 18:10

Would he not (theoretically) be required to sack those responsible?

He can't really say anything else though, can he? Would you rather he said, welcome in all cheaters and ruffians?

  • me25/09/2009 at 18:10

Would he not (theoretically) be required to sack those responsible?

    ooooh. i see.

well he's not the boss, so i guess he can't?

  • me25/09/2009 at 18:11

He can't really say anything else though, can he? Would you rather he said, welcome in all cheaters and ruffians?

    "...have you got pat's number?"

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 18:11

I do really think I should get bonus points for using ruffian in a sentence. It's an awesome word.

  • Lukeh25/09/2009 at 18:12

I do really think I should get bonus points for using ruffian in a sentence. It's an awesome word.

    Seconded

Although can anyone up the ante with ragamuffin?

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 18:14

But the article speculates he is about to become team boss...

I do really think I should get bonus points for using ruffian in a sentence. It's an awesome word.

It is, my dad uses it occasionaly, i should pick it up.

Its very hard to use without seeming patronising though... ;)

  • Christine25/09/2009 at 18:15

Its very hard to use without seeming patronising though... ;)

    Oh. Sorry.

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 18:16

I have just realised this new format for my blog is insane.

Its bacicly as long as one of your debrief's in written form...

  • me25/09/2009 at 18:16

good point. in that case, yes :)

    Oh. Sorry.

Aww, don't worry. That ragamuffin Nick has clearly been affected by the thought of a periwinkle.

  • Nick25/09/2009 at 18:19

They have an albino hedgehog on the one show! Its amazing!

  • Pat W25/09/2009 at 18:19

"I don't believe it is professional to in any way talk about our plans while we are sponsoring another team this year..."

That was a plug worthy of Alex. He is talking about next year's team but gets in this year's and the fact they are winning

    rubens has a new car:

Must be fatigue? Is it related to the fire in Belgium?

  • Dank25/09/2009 at 18:22

Is there yet another scandal brewing?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8274036.stm

The Singapore paddock was fretting with talk of another scandal to come before the season is out and perhaps that is why few wanted to judge Renault and the "crash-gate" plotters too harshly.

  • Lukeh25/09/2009 at 18:22

    doesn't say why though?

I like the fact everytime I see photos of Rubens' car at Singapore I see the dude at Goodwood who was chatting to us. :D

    have commented and asked.

  • Dank25/09/2009 at 18:24

Split between GT and Prototype, so LMP1 and LMP2 in a mo. No GT1 of course.. which is odd because if I had a GT1 I'd just turn up for the automatic qualifying place for Le Mans..

Nice feature in the ALMS live timing. If you point your mouse at the car's race number a picture of the car pops up.

    Did you hear that Bernie?

  • Steven Roy25/09/2009 at 19:21

    Did you hear that Bernie?

If he didn't hear us raving about the IRL video streaming coverage he is not going to hear that.

While Bernie is pulling down streams and youtube videos ALMS last season were asking peoplle to post their videos on the ALMS site.

  • Maverick25/09/2009 at 19:23

I won't bother asking him for Grosjean's telemetry from his crash then.

  • Maverick25/09/2009 at 19:25

spider alert - he's trying to sneak past and hope I don't notice

  • jpancoast25/09/2009 at 19:26

There's the Jag on the alms stream now... SORTA looks like the DBR9 :)

  • Steven Roy25/09/2009 at 19:26

I won't bother asking him for Grosjean's telemetry from his crash then.

You need to watch the IRL coverage on their site sometime. The amount of info is incredible. 5 video feeds, 4 on boards, data from any car on the grid and you can see up to 7 I think at a time. You can even see steering wheel position when the car is parked.

  • Maverick25/09/2009 at 19:28

Hang-on, there's another one doing the exact same thing now.

    We've got a spider convoy!

  • Scott Woodwiss25/09/2009 at 19:33

Pretty good actually, had a really rubbish day and a bit, but my brother and dad were passing so we had a fun avo/evening together, and i've got back to discover we have a new flatmate! She seems quite nice, she's chinese and has a name that no-one can say, so told me to call her stephanie!

What happened in FP1/2? Are they worth a watch?

  • lou25/09/2009 at 19:34

  • Lukeh25/09/2009 at 20:48

They source it themselves thanks to an episode of blue peter where they host a website using a washing up liquid bottle, string, an empty cereal box and blu tac

  • Steven Roy25/09/2009 at 20:48

Less atmosphere to burn them up - more reach the surface

That's what I was thinking. We need Bruce there.

I recorded 20 minutes of audio for my soon to be terrible podcast tonight. Then deleted it by mistake without saving the file.

For someone with over 5 years of IT support experience in a previous life that's pretty much a stand in the corner for the rest of the night moment.

"However, what I can say, is that as a director of the main board of Virgin, I can assure you that we would never have anybody in a team sponsored by us who cheats."

Alex Tai Team Boss to Be of Virgin F1 (nee Manor)

Clearly they have not researched the team they intend to sponsor. A significant number of Manor staff were recruited from Renault F1. Remember Renault was caught with McLaren IP very widely distributed across their desktops.

I am sure John Booth's pun that Piquet was a "smashing little driver" was tongue-in-cheek. I think we are in for some humour in 2010

I hate it when Mum asks me to do something over the weekend but then has to give a full blown lecture as to how and why it needs to be done. She must love boring me to death.

  • Lukeh25/09/2009 at 21:45

Why is autosport search so sloooooow? is it always like that?

They had to make a choice to be fair on them; capitalise their name, or improve the search features on the website.

At least now they can shout their name.

  • Rich25/09/2009 at 21:45

Why is autosport search so sloooooow? is it always like that?

I virtually cannot get into autosport and been blaming the proxy server we have to use. But today I have had problems getting into lots of websites.

I really like James Allen's blog - never minded him too much as a commentator was impartial to a point on his musings. The Lewis-love was too much though.

As a writer though, he's very good.

I prefer Joe's Blog personally - James can be a bit superficial at times like his last post which you wondered why he bothered. He is way better as a writer than as a commentator.

  • jackie/saltire25/09/2009 at 22:30

As a writer though, he's very good.

He is, although I find he's writing more mainstream news stuff these days instead of original thought.

That might be why I'm getting a bit tired of James' blog. For me, he was much better when he started his blog, before he got the fancy new domain

  • Rich25/09/2009 at 22:32

Its a bit different here, virtually everything gets approved, not just the stuff he likes, and with solution's like doohicky and LCLT it works for chat. It can take hours or days for things to be apporved on his site.

The other problem is he seems to have a loyal following who praise everything he does instead of being honest and telling him what works. I think they even told him the hand gestures thing was great!

Pretty much all my comments get greenlit except for two - one hoping that whoever was ill in his family gets well soon, and another saying that a link on his page was badly formatted (which he edited the page and edited that bit out).

  • Alison25/09/2009 at 23:05

The one with the line of fans!

Same problem then really.... You just need to keep them in a long line only 1 layer thick and nudge them along slowly. Any higher and they get sucked up and smashed.

  • Adie25/09/2009 at 23:05

    I'm stuck on 16 i think

16 is the one with the trees.

Suck the trees left....twiddle so the meebs end left, then push to hole.

Suck the blue dude in to the bottom then push 'em all out.

    Simples!

  • Adie25/09/2009 at 23:06
