Monday heralds the start of a new week, and the start of the 2010 season proper as the first team launch gets underway. Mercedes will be showing off some new stuff in Stuttgart, and there'll be a thread along later to discuss it all. For now, though, here's what we're talking about:

  • We're all sorted on the Fantasy Racers front now, as there was a bit of a confusion over what the Sidepodcast league was going to be called. We're now known as the Panda Racing 2010 league, so if you haven't already, head on over to Fantasy Racers, set up your team, and follow this link to join the league.
  • We released an F1 Debrief podcast yesterday, another one that was recorded off-air, and it was actually an unscheduled one. We had a lot to discuss though, and the show features a brand new advert for the daily threads made by my own hands. I'm not good at the music but hopefully it fits in the podcast quite well. Also, don't miss the outtake on the drop.
  • Nico Rosberg has stuck his neck out and said he's not afraid of Schumacher. Speaking to the L'Equipe paper (and assuming my French is up to it), he said he plans to win in Bahrain and he's not afraid to stand up against the seven times world champion. Go Nico! (Another thing I never thought I would say about him.)

That will do for now. We're also expecting some news about US F1's first driver announcement, so it will be a busy day for breakout threads! I'll see you in the comments.

If this is the first launch day, then offseason is over. I declare PRESEASON. Let's go :-)

    Hello all

I'm having a real problem with this film and video portfolio. I really need somewhere to put together the karting footage otherwise I think I might have to resort to putting together a couple of videos using existing media, just to showcase what my editing skills are like. I'm not sure how that would go down though. Think I'll have to give NUCA a call tomorrow and get some advice.

    Hello all

    Hi. No idea, sorry..

  • Pat W25/01/2010 at 00:41

I've joined the Panda and VivaF1 leagues in Fantasy Racers

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, uk)25/01/2010 at 00:46

I do not know how many have noticed but a change in Fantasy league rules means that only the first 100 teams to join a private league contribute to the Top League table. Already, 24 teams are in. It would be not be good if Kathi or other notable top scorers from last year did not make the first hundred to join.

    How many leagues are there?

I think it was discussed before. I'm not clear on what happens if one of the first 100 pulls out... if a high scorer withdraws, can some of us remove ourselves for a round, bump up the high scorer into the top 100, and then add ourselves back later?

  • Pat W25/01/2010 at 00:50

    How many leagues are there?

A couple of pages. It won't let me view the whole list now I've signed up to my maximum two. The vast majority only have 1 or 2 entrants though.

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, uk)25/01/2010 at 00:50

Once joined, teams can not leave a league.

Can I just put in (another) plug for this game I'm working on? I'm looking to finalise the rules by Tuesday and I don't know how involved to make it, so if you like the general idea and want a hand in how it is shaped for the year ahead, pop over and leave your thoughts. I may mention it tomorrow evening when more people are about.

Where did you finish last year?

Where did you finish last year?

Personally, I lost interst around race 4 or 5 when I realised when there was no way to recover

  • Pat W25/01/2010 at 00:58

Where did you finish last year?

I don't know, I abandoned in June during exams and never got back into it because people were going over my head with their explanations. I have more time now.

actually it was probably earlier than that

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)25/01/2010 at 01:01

It should be simpler this year. Having to trade during races last year was too hectic.

My mom and dad are from the same town as Evil Knievel. My mom actually lived down the street from him and my uncle actually went to Butte High with him. According to my Uncle, he got kicked out of high school after his sophomore (second year.) He showed up at his graduation ceremony anyways with his motorcycle.

Indeed. It's only then that it's annoying. Because if people use the regular one you can just find it on search. What was bugging me was that it said, "retweeted by you and 1 other". Which other? WHO? TELL ME!!!! phew.

The points seem to be changing again

    25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1

The winner gets no more points, second just gets less. So if there is more incentive for second to try and come first, there must be less incentive for third to try to come second.

That's just a shame that I have to go to the post office to send off some parcels, which is next door to Greggs, and all of this around the time of lunch time. Such a shame.

ah, mine are these. I do like a big glass.

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 12:42

    Do you not normally?

Not usually. I always drink black coffee in the mornings. In the afternoons I'll often have black Earl Grey or Lady Grey. If I have regular tea (Sainsbury's Red Label of course) then I have milk in it. But I very rarely feel it calling to me as a drink. I think this might be the first time in 6 months or more.

Milk ruins the texture of tea. I only ever had milk in my tea when I worked for ICI because the canteen women didn't have a recipe for tea without milk.

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 12:44

What do we think of this?

Whitmarsh said that FOTA would soon conduct a fans' survey to try and gain a better understanding of what those who follow the sport want to see happen.

"We've commissioned what is, in my view, the only broad-based fan survey that will take into account the opinions of those who aren't hardcore Formula 1 fans," he said.

"It's those fans with a mild or passing interest in Formula 1 that we need to concentrate on, because we can convert them into more avid fans.

I did think James May did make a rather good point earlier in the year. He was talking about how it was a shame that Flying Cars hadn't, "ho ho", taken off. And he said one of the main reasons was that everyone, pretty much has had the experience of having a car break down on them, but usually when your car's engine stops the wheels are already on the ground.

  • Steven Roy25/01/2010 at 14:22

    How reassuring.

People always react when a plane crashes just as they do when a racing driver dies. Both have happened before and both will happen again. Everyone knows there is an element of risk before they get on a plane or in a car.

Planes are outside so you should be safe as there is very little chance of landing on your head.

  • Christine25/01/2010 at 14:22

Everyone knows there is an element of risk before they get on a plane or in a car.

I thought the point was I couldn't do that? I think we may have to take them to task for this blatant misselling.

your honour, while Mr Andronov was clearly stopped by having completed a tube of the aforementioned snack, it is quite clear that he did not wish to stop and on behalf of my client I would argue that THAT is the point of the advertising campaign...

  • jpancoast (USF1 toaster salesman)25/01/2010 at 14:28

I'd wager the chances are higher, though.

you're far more likely to get into an accident in a car.

Also, you could drive off a cliff in your car. Can't do that in an airplane :)

I'd rather fall out of the sky than burn to death, but it really all comes down to personal taste...

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 14:28

The boxes over Christmas said that they now included 90 pringles. My sister decided to count them and there were actually 89. I will support you Alex.

Thank you. And I approve of your sister counting them.

  • Lukeh25/01/2010 at 14:28

Ahh, Broken Sword on the iPhone is bringing back lots of good memories :)

  • Christine25/01/2010 at 14:29

Not one that falls out of the sky though.

Also, you could drive off a cliff in your car. Can't do that in an airplane :)

Only if you live near a cliff!

  • Maverick25/01/2010 at 14:29

Also, you could drive off a cliff in your car. Can't do that in an airplane :)

you could drive off a cliff or indeed into one in an airplane

  • Steven Roy25/01/2010 at 14:29

    I quite like the Eurostar.

Supposing he sent you flight tickets to go to Petit Le Mans

    You're hired!

I have now opened a second can... What is going to happen? Who is going to win this particular battle?

  • Lukeh25/01/2010 at 14:30

Did she count them as she ate them?

Well we shared them but it was probably a 80-20 percentage share.

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 14:31

Well we shared them but it was probably a 80-20 percentage share.

    That's 100 not 89

    he said percentages

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 14:31

These cans don't have 90 in them... They may be a different size can, but I still think we can use this Mav!

  • Maverick25/01/2010 at 14:32

You're getting mixed up with a boat ;-)

Chances are, Mr C would make me. The same way he made me get in a helicopter, against my better judgement, at Goodwood. It would make great video, he said. And that video never surfaced because Colin McRae died in a helicopter crash.

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 14:32

nope. Canyon road, two cliffs on either side of said road, go off road, boom, into cliff face.

  • Christine25/01/2010 at 14:33

Ah. I was about to get Maverick to go for you as well! Phew!

Can I get Maverick on board to complain that I don't have any Pringles?

I have never been in a helicopter. I bet they are fun to drive with their weird controls.

    Does the video still exist?

    I'm building an RC helicopter.

Don't think it's big enough to fit you guys, though ;)

  • Christine25/01/2010 at 14:34

Fair enough. It was delayed for the crash, though, which was the point I was trying to make. Not exactly an incentive to get in the air again.

It's okay... he moved back in. But while he was out he bought a lot of stuff from funny named shops like, "Isn't it chromantic".

It was hard to say no to all the stuff because he got pre-approved for a credit card... Leading to a great line...

Rachel: "Don't worry Joey, if it means anything to you, you'll always be pre-approved with us"

Joey: "No that doesn't mean anything to me".

  • Lukeh25/01/2010 at 14:51

I an't wait to see where Bernie is planning to put the shortcut at Monaco

  • Paul Convery25/01/2010 at 14:59

They should use this layout for the Bahrain GP though... http://www.bahraingp.com/en/circuits/karttrack

  • Maverick25/01/2010 at 14:59

It doesn't have a shortcut, does it?

    Yes... the original layout

  • Maverick25/01/2010 at 15:02

...where did this come from?! Bahrain has changed!

Does this mean a decision on Silverstone's layout is imminent?

  • Alex Andronov25/01/2010 at 15:02

I did think when your caller was suggesting that perhaps there should be a line on the corners in the podcast I did wonder if maybe Bernie's call for shortcuts could usher that idea in. He'll say, "we need shortcuts", then "we've watered it down to this". It makes people more likely to accept the change because it sounds better than the always false alternative.

  • me25/01/2010 at 15:02

    10. Which of these websites, if any, do you visit regularly?

    Autosport.com

    F1-live.com

    Dailsportscar.com

    Other (please specify)

    Wasnt F1-Live.com the GMM site?

I was expecting to see Kubica plummet down the rankings for failing to even start the Monte Carlo - seems to have got away with it

I had no idea what they had launched until i got home

I was expecting to see a big presentation stand near their main stage. There wasn't one anywhere.

i see mark sutton has been backtracking on earlier tweets:

    Plug alert...

Early in this thread when not many people were around, I mentioned a new game I'm working on. Think of your usual post-a-blog-comment-picking-your-drivers type of game, but covering F1, IRL, WRC and so forth.

I am aiming to make it fairly open without being ridiculously complicated and I could use some feedback please, if anyone has the time for it?

The rules are up for discussion in that thread today and tomorrow and maybe beyond that.

With all these F1 drivers doing WRC and DTM etc, it shouldn't be too hard to play along.. ;-)

    Dumbest Business Plan ever.

On BBC2 they are interviewing one of the people who launched an online Scottish newspaper today. They hit their year end target for readers on day 1. Sounds good so far. Then he announced that they want to establish their business online then launch a print version because print is superior. This was just after he said they understood the internet.

    This can only end well.

    http://caledonianmercury.com/

  • Scott Woodwiss25/01/2010 at 23:11

    This can only end well.

It's one of those "Why would we want to pay for something that we can get free" situations.

  • Steven Roy25/01/2010 at 23:13

It's one of those "Why would we want to pay for something that we can get free" situations.

It also means you are paying for something that was on their site 15 hours ago or it means the news on the site will be filtered to keep the good stuff for the print edition.

If they establish a working online version why produce print when print is broken?
