We have reached Sunday, and for anyone looking for the live show, we must apologise. The live server is still not ready to rock and roll yet, and we weren't planning on doing any podcasting this weekend. However, we did record a Debrief episode yesterday, so look out for it in your feeds at some point today. Now, moving onwards:

  • We've been busy creating new pages again, with a new Sidepodcast Elsewhere page to have a look at. An expanded way to find where we are on the web, there are links to our Twitter pages, the Facebook Fan page and where we store some of our videos and photos. Have a look and let us know what you think.
  • While we're on the subject of Twitter, Mr C discovered yesterday that he retweets Lukeh more than he does me! This is so unfair, considering that I retweet the Sidepodcast account way more than anyone ever! I don't tweet enormous amount, though, so I can sort of see how this would be the case. Must try harder.
  • I know we've done nothing but talk about the Sidepodcast Calendar recently, but it's worth pointing it out again, as we've made the main embed a little bit bigger so you can actually see the items involved. It's just that bit wider, and just that bit longer and I like it this way. What do you think?

Anyway, let us know what you're up to today, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

    *sits in the new daily*

i really really like the sidepodcast elsewhere page. I especially like the Flickr display! changing pictures are awesome. The facebook and twitter things are also very cool.

i see autosport intend to write about movements in the castrol rankings every.single.week.

because it'll annoy me, i've created a custom RSS feed that strips out all mentions of Castrol Rankings and leaves everything else intact. you can subscribe here:

I'm wondering if we will get used to them as we did the quali weights. it may be a new form of entertainment during the weekend 'who will be no 1 next'.. we could have predictions and everything.... of course that would be fun... if they weren't so stupid, annoying and pointless.

it's been one heck of a week. x2 resits and sooo much school work lead me to feel very very distant from things. I've never been so stressed. luckily i survived. Just one mock on monday followed by a module the week after and then i'm hoping things will settle down a bit again.

those shifty eyes are from watching the ball go back and forth at the tennis young lady!

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 09:38

Ooooh I completely forgot about that! Are you loving it??

sooo loving it. I was surrounded today by the entire population of Britain and they were all cheering for Murray. Boooo.

I am rather sunburned though. And my British friend who I spent the day with didn't know what a boysenberry was, do you really not have them there? Or is she just silly?

We are now pondering a trip to Nobu one night this week because all the tennis players eat there and I don't care if its expensive, I need to see my Rogelio.

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 09:38

That's a new one for me.... We walked past a Nobu yesterday! Nick was excitedly looking in the window (even though he hates fish) and I had to drag him away!

  • Nick in Dubai24/01/2010 at 09:41

Try emirates and tell them they changed the cicket and caused the problem, its their reponsibility to sort it out.

the original change wasnt a problem, you are getting them to fix an error on their part.

  • Nick in Dubai24/01/2010 at 09:46

Are you sure it wasnt a tayberry?

Yeah I said that to them. I've been promised a ring back once they've got through to their London office.... I'm not sure why that will be helpful.

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 09:49

It is more of an issiue the further you book in advance, if you have connecting flights for instance thse may be moved an hour or 2 with next to no notice, then any connections you have have to be moved, it becomes a nightmare. I recommend booking no more than 2-3 weeks in advance :D

No. They are tasty though so I guess they'd be allowed on the berry diet :P

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 09:56

    no

that is true. I say yes because I list it in my list of things I would live off :D

I bought a huge piece of mixed berry cheesecake tonight actually. I should go and eat it. Om nom nom.

    Does it need a rebrand?

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 09:57

    Does it need a rebrand?

blueberries and blackberries are not "true" berries either so I think we'd have to rebrand everything.

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 09:58

oh and neither are raspberries. Or anything I'd include in my 'I'd live off that' list. Except for grapes. They are true berries.

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 09:58

    Does it need a rebrand?

Well it's silly to everyone normal Strawberry is a berry. If we start going by the technical term we have to say Strawberries aren't but tomatoes are.

As my hero Miles Kington once said, "knowledge is knowing the tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting one in a fruit salad".

The worst bit is when he tells me facts that just aren't true! He got obsessed with the body age thing and wouldn't believe me when I told him that not all cells regenerate like that. Some cells are in your body from before birth through until death. He got very angry. I think it's really funny.

One of my favourite bits from the show was with Dara O'Briain he got a hard to know question right one time. Then when they had him back the next series they asked him the question again and he said the same answer and it was wrong. Because scientists had discovered something else since.

As far as I can remember (and I haven't checked to see if this is still accepted or not) the neocortex in the brain doesn't regenerate and the cells there are as old as you. But of course that might have changed.

Hehe yeah off the top of my head I'd say certain parts of the brain and spinal cord, and some reproductive cells.

    How did i not know there was going to be a Korean GP!?! {Comment #3}

Because they've done no marketing and there has been little said about its inclusion so far. Although I knew it was intended to be included a few months ago, the only other thing I know about it is that it's a bit rural. I don't even know if it's a Tilke-drome and someone usually mentions it pretty quickly if so.

Looking at the track layout I am quite prepared to say it is yet another Tilkedrome and there is as much chance of overtaking as there is of the winning driver being lifted on to the podium by a shoal of salmon.

sounds like a good decision from the beeb!

however, if they've already made them... how hard can it be to add canada and korea?

  • Alison in Dubai24/01/2010 at 12:17

I thought they were okay. The best circuit maps I've seen before but that sort of thing doesn't interest me greatly.

The main annoyance was that they had Mark Webber describing as it went round and the voice never matched up with where you were on the circuit....

  • Lukeh24/01/2010 at 12:17

however, if they've already made them... how hard can it be to add canada and korea?

They could always just save the time and draw them on Paint. Concerning Korea, just do a scribble with lots of slow sections and two straights, dont even need to know the circuit to draw that one.

  • Pat W24/01/2010 at 12:17

What kind of dodgy seeding system has the number 2 and 5 meeting in the quarters. That makes no sense at all. 1 should play 8 2-7 3-6 4-5

That is the whole point of seeding. The best play the easiest.

  • Alison in Dubai24/01/2010 at 12:51

Hahaha I just had a look at it... It amuses me that Lewis and Vettel cost more than Jenson.... How is that worked out?

    a definitive one.

Hahaha I just had a look at it... It amuses me that Lewis and Vettel cost more than Jenson.... How is that worked out?

Lewis because he is better. Vettel because people think he is better

  • Alison in Dubai24/01/2010 at 12:54

I am 50-50... its a bit of an expensive day trip but it might be worth it

Come on an expensive day trip to the UK *bats eyelids alluringly*

  • Alison in Dubai24/01/2010 at 12:54

Lewis because he is better. Vettel because people think he is better

I think Red Bull are going to be a bit rrrubbish this year. This is of course based on nothing but my personal prejudice :D

  • Dank24/01/2010 at 12:55

Still undecided on which 'strategy' to adopt in this year's Fantasy Racers. Wish the £45m option would allow for at least one change mid-season.

  • me24/01/2010 at 12:55

I chose the option to not be able to change it anyway, it makes it easier for me. To quote some informercial I saw years ago, "just set it and forget it"

you need to add yourself to the league too.

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 12:55

my team will do bad because I picked Heikki <3

Still undecided on which 'strategy' to adopt in this year's Fantasy Racers. Wish the £45m option would allow for at least one change mid-season.

The trouble with that option is that you may find after one race your whole season is going to be rubbish

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 12:58

I'm counting on Williams not sucking for once because Rubens <3

  • Alison in Dubai24/01/2010 at 12:58

I don't think there's enough additional budget to compensate for that really....

  • RG24/01/2010 at 12:59

    Morning all.

I'm nervous about being in the heady heights of 6th at this early stage of Fantasy Racers. Too high for my liking...

Do you normally spend all day sat in direct sun every day for a week?

Somewhere between Swansea and Llanelli, apparently

So Amy do you sit in the sun for a week between Swansea and Llanelli?

  • Amy24/01/2010 at 13:12

Do you normally spend all day sat in direct sun every day for a week?

no, that would involve outside. Outside is scary.

Speaking of tennis, look at the amazing money box I got today. And by 'got' I mean my flatmate got it and then gave it to me.

Hello all, what a fantastic day. Just got back from celebrating my friend's 40th birthday to find a debrief downloading into my iTunes and Alex radio. This day could not get better. Finally, would like to say how marvellous the staff at the Brighton Metropole are, they made today a superb day

By the way... I have just realised that I had a brain fade during the earlier conversation... The Bug performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter... I do know on salient fact about that song... It was written by Mark Knopfler!!!

  • Jordan F124/01/2010 at 18:07

Mark's from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It's in Canada, about 1800 road miles from my place, all in the same country.

Not really sure how you pronounce it. I call it "Sas-catch-chew-on." Good enough for me. If you really want to get it right, Wear a swimsuit on a super cold winter's day, find a frozen pond, break the ice with a rock. Jump in, climb out then attempt to say "Saskatchewan".

"Sas-ka-toon" is way easier to say.... Does not require attempt to freeze yourself soild or butcher some Native American Language.....

  • Janna24/01/2010 at 18:07

I do know on salient fact about that song... It was written by Mark Knopfler!!!

    That explains a lot ;)

Urh, you played The Might Be Giants and I missed it! Good selection again though, will have to try to catch the beginning one day.

  • Lukeh24/01/2010 at 18:11

Ahhh! The Distance was in an episode of The Simpsons. That's where I recognised it from.

  • Alianora La Canta24/01/2010 at 18:30

    Just looking at the Korea track info it seems odd that they have a race and the f1.com doesn't know the circuit length or the number of laps. {Comment #167}

They won't officially know until the FIA has done its circuit homologation and confirmed that any measurements/estimates from the track owners are true and correct. If the circuit owners claimed a three-mile circuit but they only had 300m of car park for the track, f1.com wouldn't want to be caught showing figures that inaccurate without the FIA's permission...

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 18:32

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 19:07

Absolutely. I have got better when I have a prepared thing. So I do better when, for example I am reading out loud like on the Our/My Tune/Song.

The last few corners after the two long straights. I seem to be losing sooooo much time on them.

i tried that on friday at karting, it works, you wont keep up for long potentially, but you can see what they are doing.

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 19:13

It's different in crisps it seems. I don't know why.

Ah I do know why now... I've just looked it up. They measure the solanine levels and make sure they are low. Apparently the solanine levels and greening happen at approximately the same time but not always. As long as they test the potatoes they can include them. With your own potatoes you probably can't :)

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 19:13

    #sidepodspace

Someone was going to do a piece on the moons of Jupiter or Saturn for the sidepodspace sidepodradio show. I can't remember why but it didn't happen. Dr Kiki's latest science hour podcast covers the moons of Saturn and there is lots of good stuff in there. I just love the idea of vaolcanos that instead of chucking out molten rock erupt slushy ice.

There is a theory about corrective learning that it is very hard to learn unless you see the results of your output. Doctors, for example, usually only find out the results of their examinations on issues after several months. This is so much of a problem that they have started using stock information from previous cases so that the answer is immediately known. So they can say, "yes I think this person has cancer" or whathaveyou, and they can be told, "that's right" right then.

Without wanting to compare my messing about to being a doctor. I feel like it's harder with a live show to learn from it because unlike with a podcast where you pour over every edit point. Anyway... it's... interesting...

  • Alex Andronov24/01/2010 at 19:47

You could do a 15 minute section live then do a podcast version of the same thing and find out where the podcast is better. Leave a few days gap between doing them so that errors and the like are not fresh in your mind

  • Pat W24/01/2010 at 19:51

Ah interesting choice. I should go back and listen if it archived.

i think it's harder, but only because there's so much going on. yesterday we recorded a show, and today we can answer feedback on various points.

whereas during the live it's more like - is there buffering, has the stream died, did you see comment x and do you remember what i just said?

It's maybe not what most people will consider to be news, but since the Castrol Rankings are an Autosport feature then it is worth a news item for them.

It's just like giving an update on a football team moving up the table on football website.

Also, on a slightly more serious note. One of the main drawcards of being a subscriber is, supposedly, that you get an ad free version of the site. While I realise I'm not subjected to the utterly insane 'free' layout (that could only be bettered by the inclusioin of animated gifs), that stupid castrol rankings box on the right side is clearly advertising.
