It's Saturday, and that means the weekend is officially here! Woohoo! As ever, we're going to be around during the weekend, fiddling with bits and pieces on the site and gradually making Sidepodcast a better place to be. Starting with:

  • Mr C has been busy at the coding grindstone and has put the awesome comment filter box on every single page. So, if you are using Ye Olde Comments, you can now filter those as you would be able to on the LCLT or the Doohickey. If this means nothing to you, we'll probably be explaining in more detail soon, but why not test it out and let us know how it goes?
  • We created another breakout thread yesterday with the news that Jaime Alguersuari has finally been confirmed at Toro Rosso. It seemed like an obvious signing, and everyone involved seem to think that he was all set for the drive, so we're not sure why the delay occurred. Either way, we are now down to just four unclaimed seats for the upcoming season.
  • Massa finished up his return to the F1 cockpit, albeit an F2008 with GP2 tyres on. He took over the reigns from Valentino Rossi at Barcelona, and said he feels 100% fit and isn't worried about returning to the grid at all. Yay for the return of Massa!

That should do it for now. Let us know how your weekend is going and what you're up to, and I'll see you in the comments.

lopez has signed for USF1 according to reuters.

Argentine Jose Maria Lopez was confirmed as a driver for the new Formula One team USF1 on Friday, his spokesman Miguel Mattos said.

"Everything has been agreed and the official announcement will be made on Monday," Mattos told Reuters.

it's all go now. i have serious doubts over the quality of his talent, but we shall see in due course.

down to 3 open seats, then - 1 each at Campos, USF1, and Renault.

Why can I see this being worse than Badoer?

"Confirmed as a driver" could still mean test driver, that would be amusing

    :D

  • Jordan F123/01/2010 at 00:40

Odd. I am already 1.5 hours into my weekend already as I define if as being time after work on a friday afternoon....

    Hello weekend and journeyer.

  • RG23/01/2010 at 00:41

But he's got all the $$$ so he's not going to want to be a test driver.

  • me23/01/2010 at 00:42

But he's got all the $$$ so he's not going to want to be a test driver.

it would be amusing if he were a tester, but almost certainly he'll be the number #2 driver.

  • startledbunny23/01/2010 at 00:43

But he's got all the $$$ so he's not going to want to be a test driver.

If 2 drivers stump up more cash....

Not looking forward to more pay drivers this season.

  • RG23/01/2010 at 00:43

it would be amusing if he were a tester, but almost certainly he'll be the number #2 driver.

Yeah. But more interestingly, who's gonna be the other driver?

  • Pat W23/01/2010 at 00:44

Pay drivers are the downside to having independent teams again..

Well, we knew they were gonna be likely when they asked for 3 new teams. Especially in this economy.

  • me23/01/2010 at 00:48

monday is an odd day to make the announcement.

won't all the coverage be about mclaren?

If only Racing Drivers were like football teams. The best ones promoted, the worst ones relegated.

Renault World Series Silverstone 2008. Extreme sunburn. Took over a week for skin to recover. Blisters the size of an egg on my neck. Sunburn is indeed bad.

speaking of tennis, and live streaming, they don't quite have the right idea yet. The Australian Open do have it, but....

"Live access is NOT available in the following territories: Australia, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rica, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States"

That reeeeeally doesn't leave much of the world.

someone should totally do that for me for the tennis. My friend says 'remember when he played such-and-such in the third round last year?' and I say 'no, all I remember is Roger lost to Rafa in the final' but then she also says things like 'remember the first round in 2006' and surely that's not even possible to do, I think my brain can only retain one year of each tournament before being wiped.

it became a hassle for us to keep it up to date. people have a habit of changing names, creating and dropping blogs at a rapid pace, so we leave it all to the wiki where people can manage their own.

i'd probably argue that links within posts are more valuable. if only because it says "i've read this post and you should read it too". that's just the way i see it though.

  • Alianora La Canta23/01/2010 at 16:01

Sorry for being a nuisance, but I'd like to make a request of anyone who's got a link to my blog that was made more than about three months ago (newer links should be unaffected for reasons that will become clear below).

This week, La Canta Magnifico Blog's original blog location (which went down towards the end of October) went down. The forum on which is hosted is now called www.formula1home.com.au/forum rather than www . formula1home . com / forum. The reason I've stuck spaces round the old address is because it's been taken over by a Ukrainian website which my co-admin informs me is not only not a copy of my blog, but potentially dangerous to browsing experience and/or computer (he and I have a theory as to why this happened, but it's a long story).

I'm currently trying to fix the internal links in my blog so that it's safe to follow links pointing from one of my entries to another (only ones I typed in manually are affected; the blog template ones work fine and you can safely read and comment). However, if anyone with another blog linked to my blog some time ago, there is a danger that they may inadvertently point people to the Ukrainian site instead of mine.

As a result, if you have a link to my blog, please can you check that it either contains "lacantablog" in the URL (I fixed the links from those domain names before I knew this problem had arisen) or that it starts with www.formula1home.com.au/forum ? The dangerous links are the ones that have .com without .au immediately afterwards.

If you linked to a specific item in La Canta Magnifico Blog more than three months ago, sticking .au just before the /forum will fix the link.

Ferrari have confirmed Valentino Rossi lapped quicker than any of the F1 cars during last year’s race during his test in an F2008 today.

While they very publically released Valentino's times they did not release Massa's times. Even the Ferrari release had the following disconcerting phrases "Perfect weather conditions enabled Felipe Massa today to complete a special test session" and "to regain confidence behind the wheel on a track".

Rumours circulating are the times where nowhere near as fast but that could be the nature of the testing.

Maybe Fisichella's being a Ferrari Test and reserve driver's move was inspired after all. Then again, I still say that keeping Massa when you could have had Alonso and Kimi on board was a very stupid move on Ferrari's part.

I think Massa's accidental go them into an emotional corner. Personally I think they should have got a better third driver if there are doubts.

Some people think that there are doubts about Schumacher hence why they [Mercedes] have hired Nick as the third driver.

  • Steven Roy23/01/2010 at 17:13

Even the Ferrari release had the following disconcerting phrases "Perfect weather conditions enabled Felipe Massa today to complete a special test session" and "to regain confidence behind the wheel on a track".

This time last year they gave three junior drivers a run at Fiorano. Their official release claimed the fastest one set a new lap record. You would think someone who was faster than Massa, Raikkonen and Schumacher would thrive in F2 where all are equal. I think he finished 7th in the championship. They can claim anything they like about Rossi's test but none of us no if the car had the correct ballast etc. He is not going to get in a car again for at least a year so we are never going to know if their claims are true or not.

I don't think Massa will be miles off.

  • Rich23/01/2010 at 17:18

They still released the times that Michael did - although again the interpretation was difficult, in the context of a green track etc it seemed good times. In the case of Massa it was the combination of the phrases in the context of no times - as a PR exercise it was a shambles as now people are doubting Massa's comeback potential.

With the kind of injury he had there is always a possibility that he won't be what he was but it has to be unlikely he would be more than a few tenths off and with only one car running there would be no way to see that.

Although you have a point - it is supposed to be a "team sport" where information is shared. I am not sure how significant they actual times are - possibly it was more of a physical training. I hope in the case of Massa he is fully recovered.

    Did Katherine take that picture?

  • George23/01/2010 at 18:00

"Why can I see this being worse than Badoer?"

I think, that USF1 is a big pyramid thing, and will make Hesketh look like McLaren. With all the businesses in the US, they had to go to argentina for both driver and money. They could've at least gotten Amway, that fits the scheme.

BTW, they've had a press/media relations/PR sponsor type guy since early June, 09.

I think fail, USGP in future fail.

  • Alex Andronov23/01/2010 at 18:03

yes. Quite a few people were looking at us.

    I bet.

What level of competition between the "oooh lets go in there" (You) vs "no alex, you know you'll end up spending lots of money" (Her) was there ;) :P

Just listening to the latest Motor Sport podcast. Nigel Roebuck was talking about him and Mark Hughes were invited to go to speak to Max. Not to do an interview but to discuss the plans for the next formula 1 regs.

Max seriously asked them if the fans would miss the noise of the engines. How can anyone spend 40 years in the sport and not know that people like the noise?

Apparently Max thought the noise was a distraction because sometimes he couldn't hear the commentator for the engine noise.

I knew he was out of touch but that is unbelievable.

Last week in Birmingham they just killed the power. They were electric karts..

  • Pat W23/01/2010 at 22:03

    realllly lazy day

Was going to go to Avatar but the man with the plan neglected to tell us when/where to meet. I'm not surprised, he does this often and I've stopped bothering to chase him up (if it were a film I really wanted to see it would be different).

So I did some hoovering, watched Flight of the Conchords, tidied up a bit more, and spent ages on the draft process for a fantasy racing game..

i'm not sure how to get ride of the headache (as we have no painkillers or anything in the house for some reason). on the plus side i've finished 2 essays and about 10 pages of revision notes.. so it's been reasonably productive.

it does. and in realtime the filter now catches thread names too. which has been an oft requested feature. so entering now:

    -daily

    hides all daily conversation.

(should point out there's a silly bug to be fixed tonight, because it doesn't catch new comments as they appear)

    w00t!

although that means your browser is running out of memory chewing through 400+ comments. will see if i can make better, but the new slidy thing is maybe twice as responsive as the old one.

i assume that people type in the filter to exclude comments. is there a quicker way of doing it?

  • Jon Waldock23/01/2010 at 22:58

i'm still not sure what you mean, but i'm interested.

when i go on ye olde, i type in a word in the filter, firefox freezes for about 15-20 seconds as if its crashes (which, if i click it will do) and then just flicks up the comments like its meant too.

i assume that people type in the filter to exclude comments. is there a quicker way of doing it?

i dont usually exclude comments, usually i'll be looking for a specfic comment, so use the find button on ff ;)

  • me23/01/2010 at 23:02

I use find for one thing, and filter for many things such as podcast guesses.

  • Jon Waldock23/01/2010 at 23:03

    ooooh. with ya.

like i say, dosent bother me too much as doohickey search still works at same speed, rarely go on ye olde, but just thought i'd mension it incase it wasnt just me

like i say, dosent bother me too much as doohickey search still works at same speed, rarely go on ye olde, but just thought i'd mension it incase it wasnt just me

it's a processor intensive task. technically firefox has one of the slowest javascript engines, so it always had a similar problem in lclt.

you may get more use from it once ye olde comments go "live", but we'll come back to that later.

  • Steven Roy23/01/2010 at 23:10

i dont usually exclude comments, usually i'll be looking for a specfic comment, so use the find button on ff ;)

I use it to find rather than to exclude although it can end up being the same thing

During my journey though the land of "The Outisde" I saw a person paraglide and I thought that it might have been safer for Christine to try that as oppsed to what we call caving on this side of the pond, as Potholes here are damage done to roads by the various states of water underneath. it is the reason why the Montreal Track always needs to be repaved every year.....

    k I will take a look

yell if you can't find it, but it's an open league and no password.

  • lou23/01/2010 at 23:58

And because I tweet too much!

nahhh, it's the awesome photoshops :P

  • Jordan F123/01/2010 at 23:58

14#441 - me said: Evening all, just joined fantasy racers in readyness for next season, any idea how I join the spc league/group

ooh, we're sorting that this weekend. i has to email danny.

i think if you join the sidepodcast league, it'll work, but the name will change to panda racing 2010 shortly.

It is a shame that the SIDEPODCAST league will not be able to defend its title against those darned upstarts in the PANDA RACING league, although. however, if the SIPEPODCAST league does decide to contest its crown, it would have in all likelyhood, have chased off those vile upstarts in the PANDA RACING league....

  • RG23/01/2010 at 23:59

yell if you can't find it, but it's an open league and no password.

What is the reason for the name change? I'm expecting to have missed something here...

there be other bloggers in there, and i really don't want a season of comparisons. much better to be a non-descript entity, methinks.

Jordan F1 has had a busy offseason, getting Mercedes Engines and 7Up as a principal sponour. Could not change tyre companies although......

Does this mean that Nikki's going to take over both Longitudial Inerta teams, now Mr. C?

  • RG24/01/2010 at 00:12

I should definitely rename myself to @TimoGlock to make you feel better

But thats reserved for when Lucas di Grassi shows Timo all about the wonders of twitter.

who says i'll be supporting mercedes....

  • RG24/01/2010 at 00:18

Well I don't see [insert team name here] leaving...

  • lou24/01/2010 at 00:20

everyone at Brackley and in the race crew are still awesome and amazing... but i dislike the drivers waaaay too much to support them that much. maybe i'll support just Jenson and Rubens.. and Shov and Bono... hang on, does that mean one of them may leave after this year?

  • Jon Waldock24/01/2010 at 00:20

Well I don't see [insert team name here] leaving...

unless that name is USF1 ;)

  • Pat W24/01/2010 at 00:20

I think I may also cut down my race weekend tweets...

Shov and Bono should definitely start up Team Jenson GP

  • lou24/01/2010 at 00:21

Well I don't see team Jenson leaving...

    ^^ corrected.

that's good to know :) thank you for that prediction RG :D

    I would also imagine that

"Team Jenson and Rubens and Shov and Bono I (heart) Brawn GP - Racing"

may be too long for a team name ;)

  • RG24/01/2010 at 00:21

unless that name is USF1 ;)

lou doesn't strike me as someone who is going to want to support USF1 to be fair.

  • Lukeh24/01/2010 at 00:21

Shov and Bono should definitely start up Team Jenson GP

Also, they can get the karter named after Jenson as the No. 2

  • lou24/01/2010 at 00:21

the one who lives in Kent? he's like 15...

  • RG24/01/2010 at 00:22

    No worries.

you're getting me confused with Lukeh ;)

that's why i went for 'Brawnsomeness' much easier to say :)

  • lou24/01/2010 at 00:24

hey, McLaren signed a 6 year old!

i think i've missed something somewhere......

i just noticed i put Rubens and Jenson in my fantasy racers team without thinking what team they will be in.. but they shall stay there out of principle and respect for my team name. :) i suspect 9th is the highest i will be for a while.
