It is race day in Monaco, then, and we have lost Joe again for the second time in two days. Damn, we are careless with this man. Must try harder. Nevertheless, here are some of the things we've been talking about:

  • Pat pointed out this great post on Speed TV. I haven't got round to reading it yet, but it looks like it tracks the history of Monaco nicely. Let's read it together.
  • Prince Albert of Monaco has spoken out in a timely manner, suggesting that the sport can't afford to lose Ferrari. Of all the people in the paddock, do we think that Bernie, Max and the top bods will listen to the Prince?
  • Kathi pointed it out first, but it was confirmed later that Hamilton will be starting from the back of the grid. Because of his poor position, the team have decided to go ahead and change his gearbox. LewHam is starting light and hoping to barrel through the field - I wonder how possible this will be?

That'll do it for now. Really looking forward to seeing you all in the live comments during the Parade Lap and the race, and if not, we'll catch up later in the day. I will see you in those comments.

it's after about an hour atleast...it they're still talking about wtcc and the quiz, then you've still got more to go, 1.5 hours i believe

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 23:20

Bloody BT Home Hub. I just spent ten mins offline. Maybe it didn't like the 7 hours of Nurburgring coverage i watched while listening to RLM.

What about M&S alternatives Giggles suggested, do you have one nearby.

Tell him it's his Planet of the Apes punishment :D

  • Steven Roy23/05/2009 at 23:23

    How close is the approach?

1.3 times the distance to the moon. We have had a couple recently that were 0.2 times that distance so this one is not that close

  • lou23/05/2009 at 23:23

Hehe. I don't think that will appease him, though. :)

i'd make him a cake, but erm... it wouldn't get to you before the race... or probably before tuesday since it's a bank holiday. maybe he can tremayne about the lack of nachos instead? :D

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 23:24

If "It will miss us by about 1.3 lunar distances", is there a chance it could hit the moon?

All be it, a very slim one

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 23:25

    At times like this....maybe....

Imagine how insane it would be in a race

  • Steven Roy23/05/2009 at 23:26

If "It will miss us by about 1.3 lunar distances", is there a chance it could hit the moon?

It doesn't tell us that unfortunately. Of course there is so much flying about up there that no-one is tracking that it could easily cannon off something else and get diverted

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 23:26

    can certainly do that.

    ooh yay!

  • lou23/05/2009 at 23:26

    Thanks RG

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 23:37

Does anyone know what a waved white flag means during a race?

    As RG says

    WHITE FLAG

Warns of a slow-moving vehicle on the track, such as a tow truck or safety car.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 23:40

Does anyone know what a waved white flag means during a race?

Under FIA rules it is a slow car on track.

In the US it signals the final lap if waved at the flagstand, otherwise it is the same as above.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 23:40

Thanks, didnt know about the black and white triangles either

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:13

parade lap at 11? At least its not as sadisticly early as max's free practice times

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:25

JA thinks Vettel will dominate Istanbul and Silverstone. I agree with Istanbul, but I think the home track factor will play a big part in Silverstone, and crowd favorire Jenson might just be able to snatch it from under Vettel's nose.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:25

Its the fast corners, but im not convinced he's as good at overtaking as webbah, so id put him down for at least 1 of those

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 00:28

I dont know if this is geolocked, or has been posted before, but realy good cgi of the circuit http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8061687.stm

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:29

Its the fast corners, but im not convinced he's as good at overtaking as webbah, so id put him down for at least 1 of those

So you think Vettel and Webber will split the two? Also, Massa may play a big part in Istanbul. If he can't win there, I'm sure he'll be at the front and annoying the title contenders... :D

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:31

    some circuit cgi's in those.

If he wins there again he needs a weight penalty!

I can see any of the top 4 taking those 2 races, but red bull have to be favourites, unless the new rear packaging is a hinderence not a help

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 00:33

    some circuit cgi's in those.

no ill have a look thanks!

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:37

If he wins there again he needs a weight penalty!

Haha! But Ferrari seem be legitimately back on the pace now. They won't contend for the titles, but wins are definitely possible.

    hey paul. what's new?

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:46

    hey paul. what's new?

Catching up on quali, I missed it to see Star trek

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:46

Catching up on quali, I missed it to see Star trek

ah cool. was it worth missing?

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:46

Is Vettel really that light? (631kg)

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:46

Catching up on quali, I missed it to see Star trek

Watch it in full if you can. ;)

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:47

ah cool. was it worth missing?

It was a good movie, if you are a fan. Much better than Wolverine

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:47

Is Vettel really that light? (631kg)

Yep. The story coming out of today was as much about Button grabbing the pole as it was about Vettel NOT grabbing it.

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:47

Watch it in full if you can. ;)

Um, would it be on BBC site?

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:47

It was a good movie, if you are a fan. Much better than Wolverine

Heck, it was a great movie even if you weren't a fan! :D

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:48

Um, would it be on BBC site?

It's on iPlayer. But you're from Australia, right? So it would be geolocked... Try checking JTV if anyone's running replays...

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 00:48

have you seen the old inside track videos, nick?

    Wow, that wass really great!

just watched it myself. seems to have stood the test of time.

    glad you enjoyed.

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:49

Heck, it was a great movie even if you weren't a fan! :D

It was, but I didn't want to sound like a "trekky" ;-)

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:50

    ...with a vpn ;)

I'm seriously thinking about that now. I might try looking for a proxy first tho

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:50

    ...with a vpn ;)

Hahaha! I thought about getting that too, but I figured it wasn't worth it. I'd only use it for race weekends and TG anyway - and I have JTV for that!

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:51

just watched it myself. seems to have stood the test of time.

yay! ;) You know, you should have a link to the relevant Inside Track for each weekend somewhere on the page. That way, new visitors can watch it and enjoy it if they haven't seen it yet. :)

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:51

Hahaha! I thought about getting that too, but I figured it wasn't worth it. I'd only use it for race weekends and TG anyway - and I have JTV for that!

might be worth doing. i assumed they were old hat this year. the 3d car doesn't have a new rear wing etc. but actually, it's not the end of the world.

might be worth doing. i assumed they were old hat this year. the 3d car doesn't have a new rear wing etc. but actually, it's not the end of the world.

yup, i think it's worth doing. you have way more than the onboard lap anyway - the extra features are good to watch too. :)

and the istanbul edition is extra-special - someone else did the VO for it. that was the competition one. :D

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:54

Weird. I can watch Jake's "monaco past" special, but not the quali highlightr, or the old 1960s races (BBC site this is)

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:54

Of course if Journeyer was on Twitter you could have a DM convo and no-one would know... just sayin'..

Hahaha! But even if I did have a Twitter, the topic was brought up here anyway, so I'd still reply here. :P

Monaco Past there is just behind-the-scenes. I ran into the same thing.

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:56

On this theme, Mr C, do you think Joe would have anything to say about the world wide TV issues we face?

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 00:57

I think you can watch all material that isn't FOM produced, or filmed at a track on a race weekend.

obviously some stuff will slip through

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:57

On this theme, Mr C, do you think Joe would have anything to say about the world wide TV issues we face?

can always ask. i think it's a product of old media though. movies are still region locked and so are sports rights.

the internet is changing everything, it's just bernie is the last to understand it.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:57

    you know your sidepodhistory!

Of course I do! :P And that's without my requested podcast. ;)

    Hehehe.

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:58

Of course I do! :P And that's without my requested podcast. ;)

    requested?

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:58

can always ask. i think it's a product of old media though. movies are still region locked and so are sports rights.

and as long as commercial rights are still allocated on a national/regional rather than a global basis, it will stay that way.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 00:59

    requested?

on sidepodhistory? not sure if you remember, though. ;)

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 00:59

can always ask. i think it's a product of old media though. movies are still region locked and so are sports rights.

Yeah I see that. Just wondering if they would produce a paid-for feed. I guess they can't do that live, when places like here delay the coverage for local reality shows and the like

  • me24/05/2009 at 00:59

on sidepodhistory? not sure if you remember, though. ;)

ahh yes. with christine's mother-in-law? it'll happen, it's on the list.

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 01:00

the internet is changing everything, it's just bernie is the last to understand it.

I dont think thats completly fair, any top level sporting event is hard to get access to in large parts of the world.

the problem is the contracts, you cant expect to sell rights for millions if people can get it for free from the source, the stupidity is though that places get left out.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:00

Yeah I see that. Just wondering if they would produce a paid-for feed. I guess they can't do that live, when places like here delay the coverage for local reality shows and the like

While FOM would make a handsome profit out of it, it will reduce the value of their contracts with the different TV networks, which is why I doubt this will happen.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:00

ahh yes. with christine's mother-in-law? it'll happen, it's on the list.

    yay! :D

Yeah I see that. Just wondering if they would produce a paid-for feed. I guess they can't do that live, when places like here delay the coverage for local reality shows and the like

if it were profitable for bernie he would do it. what he appears to be doing is charging extra for the right for broadcasters to stream online. like the bbc do.

it's just a case of convincing your local broadcaster to pay the extra required.

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 01:01

While FOM would make a handsome profit out of it, it will reduce the value of their contracts with the different TV networks, which is why I doubt this will happen.

Yep. Problem with following what is a "fringe" sport here.

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 01:02

it's just a case of convincing your local broadcaster to pay the extra required.

    LOL. If you only knew.

  • me24/05/2009 at 01:02

the problem is the contracts, you cant expect to sell rights for millions if people can get it for free from the source, the stupidity is though that places get left out.

true enough. but globalisation should in theory eventually wipe out regionalised rights assignment. one price for all territories. a while away though.

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 01:03

    LOL. If you only knew.

i suffered last year, luckily i forced my dad to get a HDTV so i could watch it live after the first few rounds

  • Paul24/05/2009 at 01:04

i suffered last year, luckily i forced my dad to get a HDTV so i could watch it live after the first few rounds

Oh, I've got all the HD stuff. Sadly our capital is not considered a capital, and we don't get all the good TV stuff

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 01:07

true enough. but globalisation should in theory eventually wipe out regionalised rights assignment. one price for all territories. a while away though.

Oh dear, im about to start talking about globalisation. please dont shoot me.

Id love it to be true but the problem with this is threefold, firstly Price parity is not equal the world over, secondly The value of a service (as f1 is) is not static geographicly, and thirdly regulation of media output is all to often considered an integral facet of state sovereignty.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:07

true enough. but globalisation should in theory eventually wipe out regionalised rights assignment. one price for all territories. a while away though.

in theory, true. but an F1 TV contract is worth more in Spain than it is in Romania, for example. unless we see a uniform level of demand worldwide, i don't think the supply price will become uniform as well.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:08

Id love it to be true but the problem with this is threefold, firstly Price parity is not equal the world over, secondly The value of a service (as f1 is) is not static geographicly, and thirdly regulation of media output is all to often considered an integral facet of state sovereignty.

and yeah, what he said. :P

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:08

a fringe sport that hosts its own GP. tsk tsk.

  • Journeyer24/05/2009 at 01:09

but i like the bbc commentary. :(

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 01:09

I must remember and repeat i hate real politics, i love f1 politics, I hate real pol.......

    agreed. all true.

however, these things are converging. it used to be that an album was released in the states one week ahead of the uk release. now it's down to one day, or more often a worldwide syndicated release.

other industries will catch up, but the trend is moving towards a more simple model. bernie will be the last to catch on though.

So, what time does the parade lap start before the race?

  • me24/05/2009 at 01:10

Just watching the pre quali bbc show, its interesting how they are trying to develop banter similar to top gear between the 3 presenters and MB, which i guess is only natural considering the people they have, but i can sense a top gear influence in there.

2005 was the worst year ever for me as a Finn/McLaren fan! I spent many a race screaming at the TV as he retired. Again.

2005 was the worst year ever for me as a Finn/McLaren fan! I spent many a race screaming at the TV as he retired. Again.

I agree 2005 was the worst, but for a different reason. My first F1 race was USGP 2005. But that year Kimi was the best, too bad the car wasn't. Got a call....gotta go. Possible drowning. See you

  • Joe24/05/2009 at 04:58

I'm back, I was wondering what time you see the races in Australia?

  • Dan Brunell24/05/2009 at 05:11

Ah, the best weekend of motorsports all year. Monaco followed by Indy. Plus, if you are really bored, then there are a bunch of guys tuning left in Charolette.

-"Kathi pointed it out first, but it was confirmed later that Hamilton will be starting from the back of the grid. Because of his poor position, the team have decided to go ahead and change his gearbox. LewHam is starting light and hoping to barrel through the field - I wonder how possible this will be?"-

    Stupidest tactical decision, ever.

Great, make your car light at a track were you can't pass. What on earth is McLaren thinking?

  • Joe24/05/2009 at 05:14

Grasping at straws like Ferrari did earlier in the year. Just hoping Kimi can win.

I am so glad I picked him up in Fantasy racers. Too bad I also picked up Kubica and Glock.

  • Joe24/05/2009 at 05:18

I had high hopes for the Toyota's in Monaco. I agree with you, this is an orgiastic feast of motorsports. By the time the NASCAR race comes on I should be sufficiantly inebriated.

Beautiful. Sunny and warm here in the northwest corner of America; about 70ish degree. I got in 36 holes of golf in earlier today*

*It is 11:00 PM here, the race starts at 5:00 so I am just going to stay up.

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 06:07

Right. Time to start the banana cake. I hate that the first step, the creaming of the butter and sugar, is the step that can ruin the whole cake.

Yeah. I need to get back in playing shape. I have to play in a couple of company events this summer. I want to get good enough not to be rubbish but not good enough to beat members of the organization I work for.

Hi All. will be around on/off today - how many minutes until the parade lap?

how many votes is Mrs C up to? oh the server crashed. not my fault honest :) so has someone notified the organisers of how many votes she should be on - or is this so a yesterday kind of thing?

Nadal lost? what are your thoughts Amy?

  • Dan Brunell24/05/2009 at 08:53

    Ooh, Mercedes want Glock?

I think that would be a better teammate for Lewis than Heikki... or worse depending if you want Lewis to have a competitive teammate or not.

  • Scott Woodwiss24/05/2009 at 08:54

OK, here's the main bits of insight I have from JA:

    Weather is perfect

Lewis is pretty sorry for himself

    Jenson's race to lose apparently

KERS is a hobby horse of Max, Bernie would love to get rid of it

Graining has been a problem all weekend

No truth in the Villeneuve rumours

10kg of fuel is worth quarter of a second at Monaco

Brawn have KERS available but it's quite a job to get it on, no plans yet but still looking at itHard to judge RBR's diffuser without testingGrosjean still most likely candidate to replace PiquetPiquet has until SilverstoneWebber to stay with RBR, Vettel in demand, Mercedes want Glock.Senna could drive with iSport if they enter F1Rosberg's star status is fadingJenson in demand too

BMW very slow, Kubica not happy

Nothing new on a US GP

Top 5 prediction - Button, Kimi, Massa, Rubens, Alonso

I have a feeling he wont, i just have this hunch!

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 15:11

    Ooooh, is it any good?

I have it on preorder but wanted to see if my computer would run it. It's very very very similar to other Sims games in that all of a sudden its 9 hours later and I haven't slept. So I think I like it.

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 15:11

and the shuttle lands in 28 minutes. worth watching

Understood. I wants it but I can't afford the time to play it :(

Yeah - think of live commenting when all you have is GPS data.

i love the quality of the map they use. it's like that WarGames film with Broderick. the islands are like triangles. so by landing at California this would normally cost 1 million dollars but given it's the last flight of this shuttle, maybe they'll just leave it there? although checks might been doing so they'll piggy back it for a glory ride...

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 15:31

    ooh, fast

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 15:35

The good thing is we only have three weeks till the next scheduled launch

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 15:36

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/launch/landing101.html

As it aligns with the runway, the orbiter begins a steep descent with the nose angled as much as 19 degrees down from horizontal. This glide slope is seven times steeper than the average commercial airliner landing. During the final approach, the vehicle drops toward the runway 20 times faster than a commercial airliner as its rate of descent and airspeed increase. At less than 2,000 feet above the ground, the commander raises the nose and slows the rate of descent in preparation for touchdown.

I like that the commander tells them what runway he is parked on. Don't they know?

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 15:42

Not like you "go around" if it doesn't work :)

There is obviously a speed you have to achieve before you put the gear down but 300 ft doesn't give much thinking time if it doesn't work

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 15:43

FYI,here's a list of the wake up songs they play each morning to the lazy spacetronaughts out of bed

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 15:46

At that time it would be 300 mph ish. They announced 560 mph about a minute earlier

and when they touchdown, The orbiter's main landing gear touches down on the runway at 214 to 226 miles per hour, followed by the nose gear. The drag chute is deployed, and the orbiter coasts to a stop.

    No need

To be fair, 560mph is more than 'a bit of wind'

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 15:49

NASA can't build landing gear that can cope with a bit of wind?

Added complexity & weight makes no engineering sense

Concorde had that, Flight Eng could go half way down the cabin and lift the carpet if the merde hit the fan. Never heard of them using it though but we used to have to test it on the Major Checks

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 16:00

Novak seems to think that unless you have won a slam you dont deserve to be on the same court as him. And his fans...

Admittedly he gets a bit like that too. And his parents are horrible courtside. But he makes me laugh, I like a bit of light relief in sports.

The uplock hook is hydraulically unlocked by hydraulic system 1 pressure applied to release it from the roller on the strut to allow the gear, assisted by springs and hydraulic actuators, to rotate down and aft.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:19

The one advantage of the old fashioned rocket stack is that it has an escape tower on it so if there is a problem at launch they can separate the capsule from the rocket stages and 'launch' it to a safe distance.

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:19

If it helps them send men to mars, and go back to the moon i think it could be a good thing

How would they get back from Mars?

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:20

The one advantage of the old fashioned rocket stack is that it has an escape tower on it so if there is a problem at launch they can separate the capsule from the rocket stages and 'launch' it to a safe distance.

i think that's a big reason - safety. i think they are nuts too about not having a reusable vehicle but i'm not paying the bills.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:21

If it helps them send men to mars, and go back to the moon i think it could be a good thing

I don't think there is any reason not to send a shuttle like vehicle to the moon

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:21

How would they get back from Mars?

not thinking about that right now - just can we get there

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 16:21

How would they get back from Mars?

leave a cable behind as they go and pull themselves back along it?

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 16:21

not thinking about that right now - just can we get there

Maybe they're waiting to see if there's anyone there to give 'em a ride home ;)

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:22

I don't think there is any reason not to send a shuttle like vehicle to the moon

maybe getting the shuttle off the moon is a good one. it would never be enough power on it's own(??). they could use that an orbiter around the moon maybe?

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:22

How would they get back from Mars?

Same as getting any vehicle mack from Mars.

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 16:22

Same as getting any vehicle mack from Mars.

Haven't even got many successful landings there yet

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:23

not thinking about that right now - just can we get there

It was supposed to be included in the planning for Ares and it has been mentioned in the publicity.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:25

I don't understand why they don't just launch Endeavour from Pad B.

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 16:25

right, sleepy times. back for debrief.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:26

right, sleepy times. back for debrief.

Don't sleep for 15 hours this time

  • Jon Waldock24/05/2009 at 16:26

right, sleepy times. back for debrief.

i won't believe that you're actually going to sleep....

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 16:28

right, sleepy times. back for debrief.

    night, have a good regeneration

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 16:28

Don't sleep for 15 hours this time

my boss would be most unhappy if I did since I'm meant to be at work in 6 hours.

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:29

right, sleepy times. back for debrief.

    gees :)

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:29

The Debrief is only an hour and a half away. Are you really going to bed for 90 minutes?

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:30

my boss would be most unhappy if I did since I'm meant to be at work in 6 hours.

must be a good boss if they don't notice how wrecked you are on a monday.

  • Amy24/05/2009 at 16:30

The Debrief is only an hour and a half away. Are you really going to bed for 90 minutes?

i shall, but probably wont sleep.

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 16:33

    OK random race question.

Say Massa went past Vettel like he did today by cutting the chicane, and then in the corner Rosberg had passed Vettel legally, would Massa have to give up both places, or just to Rosberg?

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:34

Say Massa went past Vettel like he did today by cutting the chicane, and then in the corner Rosberg had passed Vettel legally, would Massa have to give up both places, or just to Rosberg?

thud. the sound of my brain falling out. I'd say both, because Vettel would have to be in front of Massa - Rosberg's position is irrelevant.

  • lou24/05/2009 at 16:38

ehehehe watching the end of the race again, with Jenson running down the pit straight makes me laugh and smile so much, even Kimi was smiling :) ahaha.

  • Jon Waldock24/05/2009 at 16:39

even Kimi was smiling :) ahaha.

    pah, i dont believe it

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:40

Say Massa went past Vettel like he did today by cutting the chicane, and then in the corner Rosberg had passed Vettel legally, would Massa have to give up both places, or just to Rosberg?

He passed Vettek illegally so he has to go behind him

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 16:40

thud. the sound of my brain falling out. I'd say both, because Vettel would have to be in front of Massa - Rosberg's position is irrelevant.

I still dont know.. i'm pretty sure it would end up with some form of penalty if he didn't but its still pretty grey.

    Kimi has a smile?

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 16:41

He passed Vettek illegally so he has to go behind him

    Vettel

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:52

I still dont know.. i'm pretty sure it would end up with some form of penalty if he didn't but its still pretty grey.

send the question to Charlie if you like, but Steven and I have the same thought. The rule (as i understand it) is you have to give back the (physical) position of the car you overtook through an illegal advantage (more or less the rule) so the issue is Vettel and Massa.

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 16:53

i might be around for debrief later but for now i will disappear.too much too concentrate on :)

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 16:54

nah, it was just a joke. sorry :) the FIA would never welcome such openness.

It is very pink. It is advertising an energy drink for women and there are women in the race so figure that out

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 17:27

    Go Dario

    Paul di Resta's cousin leads

You could try the Indy 500 on http://www.channelsurfing.net/watch-abc.html

    nah, i'm alright with f1 :D

F1 needs to have a pit crew for each car if they are going to have pit stops

I thought it was a dull race. Even the start was dull.

imo the last dull race i watched was Valencia...

nothing out of the ordinary happened? everything that occurred was easy to take in as it unfolded. what did you miss the first and second times, that need a third viewing?

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 17:43

how long does indy go for? seriously. no jokes like "forever" please :)

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 17:43

    2 more hours I think

  • Nick24/05/2009 at 17:44

how long does indy go for? seriously. no jokes like "forever" please :)

25 laps is 1/8th, its taken half an hour, so 4 hours :P

nothing out of the ordinary happened? everything that occurred was easy to take in as it unfolded. what did you miss the first and second times, that need a third viewing?

actually I'm still surprised that Piquet wasn't his own nemesis. i could watch that 5 times before believing it. but the rest of the race? nah. i can live without.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 17:44

how long does indy go for? seriously. no jokes like "forever" please :)

Depends on how many yellows. 500 miles at 200mph is 2 and a half hours plus all the yellows

  • lou24/05/2009 at 17:44

nothing out of the ordinary happened? everything that occurred was easy to take in as it unfolded. what did you miss the first and second times, that need a third viewing?

i didn't miss anything... i just love f1 and enjoy watching the cars and hearing the engines, plus seeing monaco. i could watch f1 cars going round and round alllll day long.

  • Lukeh24/05/2009 at 17:45

actually I'm still surprised that Piquet wasn't his own nemesis. i could watch that 5 times before believing it. but the rest of the race? nah. i can live without.

  • Pat W24/05/2009 at 17:45

im glad you put it and not me, ive just been watching because i love the whole atmosphere about the circuit and even though it wasnt as exciting as other races, was still very very enjoyable to watch I thought. Plus the end was hilarious :D

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 17:46

When they stop crashing they'll tick 'em off quickly.

hehe. i still find it funny some guy has to lean out of a box waving a flag. what about Occupation Health and Safety - he could hurt his shoulder. Just put in traffic lights....

That's a lot of adverts, boo to U.S. commercial breaks

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 17:49

That's a lot of adverts, boo to U.S. commercial breaks

i think that's because more people watch the first hour when it'S really tight racing. and more likely to be boring yellow flag sessions. but yeah annoying after I'm used to bbc feeds.

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 17:50

That's a lot of adverts, boo to U.S. commercial breaks

They are showing picture in picture for the green flag ads

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 17:51

I tend to watch F1 on telly, some iPlayer stuff and the rest is downloads. I rarely see adverts anymore :D

  • Pat W24/05/2009 at 17:52

I tend to watch F1 on telly, some iPlayer stuff and the rest is downloads. I rarely see adverts anymore :D

Get the download of this instead then... I'm probably going to get it because this feed is choppy as anything.

  • Pat W24/05/2009 at 17:52

But I'll still try and keep watching live..

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 17:52

They are showing picture in picture for the green flag ads

Quite clever really. people don't leave the room. and you get to see who the race leaders are without them constantly repeating them. here in italy we get picture in picture for moto gp but for f1 (i was watching not online) i just switch to the austrian or swiss channels. noone ever takes a break at the same time. i love that about living here.

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 17:54

Get the download of this instead then... I'm probably going to get it because this feed is choppy as anything.

really. not for me - I'm laughing at the advertising though. I've missed US prescription ads - we'll tell you EVERYTHING that could go wrong..

  • Aitch24/05/2009 at 17:56

Boy I go to bed after Monaco and come back here after a couple of hours and find everybody watching the Indy 500, do you all have insomnia? As I refuse to watch oval races I shall return for the live show

Not sure which complication you're talking about. There were a few pretty strange ones, but I think most state laws mean they have to tell you even if the chances are 1 in a million.

  • Pat W24/05/2009 at 17:58

When the live show starts I'll go Twitter-only to keep out of the way.

The live show will be on a separate thread Pat. My plan is to have the race on without sound so I can keep an eye on it while following the live show,

  • Pat W24/05/2009 at 18:00

you can carry on, on the daily thread pat?

Don't want to dilute doohickey posts and feel bad enough for missing the show anyway

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 18:01

    I'm back. Didn't sleep a wink.

If you go to bed at 4 am knowing that you want to be awake 90 minutes later you are not going to sleep

Most folk follow live events with the lclt so it should not be a problem. My problem is I need more screen acreage to follow to video feeds, two threads and keep title notes etc

  • Bassano Clapper24/05/2009 at 18:02

As I refuse to watch oval races I shall return for the live show

    Amen!

Indy coverage - the tracking system (the pointy things) with the speed. I'd love to see that in F1 start replays.

FOTA want the rules to be reverted to this years regulations it seems.

seems a good idea for me. the rules keep changing (or trying to) with a month before the season. solution keep 2010, and make the 2011 changes during a 3 week break of racing.

  • Scott in Italy24/05/2009 at 19:20

Lap 129 - The gap from 1st to 3rd is now 2.16 seconds. This is a Brawn-esque display of dominance from Chip Ganassi Racing so far, but we've got plenty of laps left for it all to change. Bell has got past Dan Wheldon.

They tried to do him for tax evasion for taxes that were not due until this may... they were trying to say that he might skip the country in May ... which sounds absurd to me.

Needless to say the prosecution laid out quite a complicated case for it and the jury ended up acquitting him, his father and his sister of all charges...

  • Steven Roy24/05/2009 at 21:49

    Um?

McNish is faster and better. You only have to listen to the guy who runs Peugeot. He spends every post race interview saying that apart from Mcnish he has the best 4 or 5 sportscar drivers in the world. Usually after McNish has done another incredible drive. His post Petit Le Mans interview was all about how no-one but McNish could have done what he did. Same with the Peugeot and Audi drivers.

Kristensen may have more wins but McNish is better.

Rubbish. Looks at any race McNish has ever done and you will find he is fast from start to finish. he was the first guy to do quadruple stints in sportscar racing because before him no-one could maintain the pace that long. You are clutching at straws dishing up rubbish like that

Why does it matter anyway? I spent all of the film telling my wife how good McNish was and that his career was defined by being a lot better than his results suggested - and that he should have been in F1.

And I am not clutching at straws when I say I think TomK is better - for whatever reason he has won Le Mans 8 times and McNish only twice. Faster does not always mean better unfortunately!

McNish has been in cars so often that had chances of winning but for all sorts of reasons didn't.

Agree - that's what I was saying in the top part when I said "I spent all of the film telling my wife how good McNish was and that his career was defined by being a lot better than his results suggested - and that he should have been in F1."

I have it on preorder but wanted to see if my computer would run it. It’s very very very similar to other Sims games in that all of a sudden its 9 hours later and I haven’t slept. So I think I like it.

    Understood. I wants it but I can’t afford the time to play it {Comment #490}

I want it but can't afford the computer to play it on (this computer just about manages Sims 2 with all the add-ons and about 8GB of custom content)...

Giancarlo Fisichella believes that a bad start cost him the chance to score Force India’s first point of the season in the Monaco Grand Prix

    Didn’t being in a Force India cause them not to score points {Comment #1069}

One of the two problems (the somewhat slow start and being in a Force India) on its own would have enabled Giancarlo to score a point. Both at the same time was insurmountable.
