It seems as though all the talking that the teams and Max did yesterday has cheered them up a little, even if they haven't come to any kind of conclusion yet. This is good as we're heading straight back into the racing today, with Free Practice and Qualifying. Meanwhile, here's what we've been discussing:

  • Rumour has it that Jacques Villeneuve would be open and willing to return to F1, as it's current regulations appeal to him. He's also not exactly shone in NASCAR, so perhaps he's looking for a return to Europe. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Would Mr C be sad if he gave up the singing?
  • Also in the news, Paul Ricard are tempted to make a bid for the French Grand Prix - although they missed out on the last selection round. Recently we saw a protest by locals to the current location, that involved tractors, so perhaps it would be less embarrassing all round for the racing to return to an actual race track.
  • By the way, have you seen the little sidebar banner on GrandPrix.com. It might be weird to be mentioning this over here, as you probably already know about An Aside with Joe, but it's very cool to see that over there. Big thanks to the GrandPrix.com team.
  • Finally, the epitome of awesomeness: Fake Sidepodcast on Twitter. My life is complete.

That'll do it for now. We'll be opening up threads during the day for FP3 and Qualifying, so please join us if you're around for those sessions. As ever, I will see you in the comments.

I thought the track wasn't in a fit state to host races any more. Last I heard, the track surface and what was underneath it had been ruined because of all the water they'd dumped onto it when they used to drench the circuit for wet weather simulations. Did they just do a complete resurface? Must have done if they're allowing racing to take place there again. I only know this because a round of the FIA GT3 championship is being run there in a few months.

    Go Longitudinal Inertia!!!!

JV's supposedly a Chief Driving Instructor at a racing school the have set up at Mirabel International Airport outside of Montreal....

With all these supposed extra F1 teams in F1 next year you do wonder where are they going to find the drivers and Frankly, Ferrari based on their position this year could hold the numbers 27 and 28 cars so a Villeneuve and 27 in a Ferrari has to be worth a second a lap.

Both Ferrari drivers have not been impressive this year so they might be looking for two drivers. Give Alonso one seat and....

Very convenient announcement with all the politics going on and may help with Ferrari's court case should they appeal.

Mmm, but I'm still wondering how that circuit is in a fit state to hold races again after all the water damage they did to it.

Mmm, but I'm still wondering how that circuit is in a fit state to hold races again after all the water damage they did to it.

I doublt that it will hold a race. I hink it is only getting a political race. The circuit they are trying to build in Paris is having problems so threatening to take the race to the opposite end of the country will get the Paris politicians onside.

Of course if push comes to shove Paul Ricard is a test track and there is no testing.

Well, in NASA's defence, in the old days they never thought of actually landing the spacecraft on earth. So the Cape was built to send rocket into space.

Once they came up with landing the spacecraft, it just so happens that the best palce to do so wasa bout 3,000 miles away on the other side of the country.... Governemnt planning at its best.

F1 not watched a great deal in pubs here

Best watched with mates (in person or via SPC) unless you have info on a particular f1 mad pub IMHO

Where would you be flying from?

  • Faceman3223/05/2009 at 00:56

OK cool, thought it might've been a pub thing out there. I'm in Canada.

why not go a little bit further and fly to monnaco

  • Faceman3223/05/2009 at 00:57

Ya I work for an airline, so very cheap travel.

I'll be in Montreal in early July hopefully

Actually, this is a holiday weekend in UK so a lot of people are off doing things with the family. Watching sport is proobably not one of them

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 00:58

    Me too, BA

Travel is cheap tickets and hotels aren't, unfortunately.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 00:58

    wha?

Apparently, it's what us airline folk do

I went to Hong Kong for the weekend a few years ago

I wonder if a few pubs do show it. I just assume it is wall to wall football, and since I'm usually in front of my own TV or someone else's, I never had a reason to check..

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 01:01

Check out all the tourist traps that London has to offer I guess.

Tower of London / Waterloo Barracks (Crown Jewels stored here)

    Madame Tusaard's Wax Museum

    Britsh Museum

    London Dungeon

    Sherlock Holmes Museum

    etc, etc, etc.

But the way you have your question stated it should be obivous to stay at home if you are going to London sorely to see a race on TV anyway.... :D

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 01:01

Am watching an F3 Euroseries race now at Hockenheim. Apparently, they're complaining that the race is a procession due to the cars' overreliance on aero grip... Hmmm...

We have very good composites and graphics workshops

  • Steven Roy23/05/2009 at 01:09

Really? I thought it was OK back in the 1990s...

The cars have been underpowered since the 70s. They don't really have that much downforce they just have no power. There used to be a Formula Atlantic championship which had slightly more downforce and more mechanical grip but they had really good 1600cc engines (BDAs I think) and they were awesome.

    Wikipedia:

low-pressure three-stage axial compressor, then into a single-stage centrifugal compressor, through the annular reverse-flow combustion chamber, and finally through a single-stage turbine that powers the compressors at about 45,000 rpm

I dont think Vettel could look more German if he tried

  • Steven Roy23/05/2009 at 02:12

you're gonna have to explain that to me?

The cars in rallying run un order with the order changed each day. So the person leading the rally is the first car through all the stages tomorrow. Trouble is there is usually a load of gravel and the like that is cleared by the first few cars so the road is actually faster if you are running fifth than first. So it is not unknown for someone to get close to the end of a day and calculate what time they need to do on the last stage of the day to avoid running in the top 3 or whatever the next say.

It's just like a track rubbering in

"You can't do it much more wrong than I did just now. This is really, really bad. I didn't slow down enough. I didn't believe that Loeb would slow down so much. Completely my mistake."

It is somethng that has always been a problem but as a result of the magnificent way Max has managed rallying there are very few competitive cars so it is easier to fiddle. If there were 20 competitive cars it would be impossible to guarantee that you are going to run P3 to P6. You could easily end up 20th and have to make up time on cars that had an advantage from th previous day. Also the top class cars do ridiculous amounts of damage to the surface so if you run 15th the surface is a mess and slow.

I don't think they'll end up in the shredder. For all that I think it will be an effectively temporary set of appointments (i.e. until early next year), I can see some applicants being successful.

There is an article on pitpass suggesting that bernie might be about to put the sport on pay or ppv tv http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=37977

Bernie won't move to PPV. That will kill his potential revenue stream of new fans. Freeview actually helps rather than harms live audiences, as most people realize that watching F1 live is different from watching on the telly.

If F1 moves to PPV, as they say, out of sight, out of mind...

  • Flibster23/05/2009 at 14:02

    He's already done that once.

    It was realllly successful. ;)

  • Amy23/05/2009 at 14:02

If F1 moves to PPV, as they say, out of sight, out of mind...

only reason I got Pay TV installed in NZ is because they took the F1, but I knew a lot of fans who simply stopped watching. Even if I was in NZ now, I might just stick to streaming. It'd be a terrible idea to do it in England.

  • Scott in Italy23/05/2009 at 14:04

@cooking thread - I understand about building up baking supplies - i never really did it in my current place either, but it's more that i don´t spend much time cooking anymore :(

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 14:04

    It was realllly successful. ;)

Digital F1 was ahead of its time. Had that been implemented now, it would've worked as a premium coverage compared to the basic Freeview coverage.

  • Flibster23/05/2009 at 14:04

If he moves it to Pay TV it would have to be available in FullHD.

It'd probably also cost more than Sky Sports or Satanta too.

we do have a little pot of them outside in the courtyard, but its not really ideal. I spent 5 years working in a kitchen with an executive chef who was obsessed with fresh herbs, she used to make me break into a nearby garden to steal their rosemary.

my last year at Uni I lived in a house with 4 girls who hated me (mostly because I watched F1 with their boyfriends hahaha) They stayed on for another year but I moved out when my lease ended. I had the power, phone, internet and pay TV cut off the day I left, and didn't tell them I was doing it either. It still makes me smile to think of how they must have reacted.

here's the link. I'm running a script which should tell me when it goes up - i'm checking every 10 second :) First time I've run it though so I could stuff it up.

    Hi again.

  • Alianora La Canta23/05/2009 at 14:33

    It’d be a terrible idea to do it in England. {Comment #289}

It would be pretty dumb because it would get the British government prosecuting Bernie for the broken contract (blaming Bernie would be great for the worried politicians), massively reduce the audience and make the series practically invisible to newcomers.

Last time he tried in 2002, the audiences were tiny (a few thousand at best) despite many millions being thrown into the equation. Even Setanta is struggling for viewers and that's based on the Freeview platform.

  • Scott in Italy23/05/2009 at 14:33

You know when your an f1 fan when you set up a script just to check the weights.

I write scripts for work - literally running one now to find me a job (if anyone is in the science world, let me know, i can make you a nice spreadsheet). People are making jokes about me curing cancer with a script.

If he did it again he would probably take it off free tv and sell it to sky to be on like football.

But the speculation is he would do it everywhere, not just the UK

Usually, when I post F1 Minute this early things change.

    http://www.f1minute.com/2009/05/23/23-may-09-jenson-button-takes-pole-for-monaco/

The first hour was sensational. A Ford GT and a Porsche 997 running nose-to-tail for 56 minutes from the green flag, most of it seen onboard. Ended when the Ford was spun around by a smaller class car.

Button's pole lap was MEGA. Barrichello will only run 1 more lap than him, while Kimi is lighter, and Vettel is a LOT lighter yet couldn't do better than 4th...

Looks like both BMW's going very long with Bourdais.

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 16:15

red bull are the two lightest.

The Finns are lighter than Webber

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 16:15

nope - this fuel load is put in after they failed to get past Q2.

  • Amy23/05/2009 at 16:16

    Giancarlo thrased Sutil didn't he?

their weights are irrelevant for qualy, only the top 10 used race fuel

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 16:19

many times, lou, many times. :D now they must be hoping we get a dry race tomorrow. what's the weather like?

cloudy, but not even a hint of showers. looking good for brawn, then, provided they can keep clear of the barriers...

  • Nick23/05/2009 at 16:19

Button and Barichello both did really well, Vettel was a waste of space, and Alonso had a relatively good effort as well

  • Amy23/05/2009 at 16:19

Williams must have known that Nakas wouldn't do much better than 10th so fuelled him heavy :D

they have to get heavy cars off the line ahead of Kerrsmi Raikonen, but even so they should have enough gas to get ahead and back out in front of the long stinter's.

    hope against safety cars too

  • RG23/05/2009 at 16:21

    Kerrsmi and his teammate Failipe

good point, but pitlane isn't closed anymore, so this doesn't harm them as much as it would've last year.

  • Flibster23/05/2009 at 16:22

I'm surprised Hamilton is that light. I expected them to fuel him up a bit. Give him the possibility of 1 stopping.

But Vettel is well into the 3 stop window - I know they said that Webber and Vettel were on differing strategies - but I was expecting 2 stop and a one stop possibility. Vettel really should have had pole.

  • Scott Woodwiss23/05/2009 at 16:22

Both Vettel and Webber struggled. It seems that their DDD isn't working, and may have affected their revolutionary rear suspension as well.

  • lou23/05/2009 at 16:23

I don't care, as long as a Toyota/BMW gets a point, I'll be slightly happier

  • Journeyer23/05/2009 at 16:24

    0 stop strategy!

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 16:27

Why would they put Vettel on a 3-stop? You can't make a 3 stop work at Monaco, too much traffic.

  • lou23/05/2009 at 16:28

I don't care, as long as a Toyota/BMW gets a point, I'll be slightly happier

it might still happen Alonso is p9 on a street circuit so Piquet is bound to crash, he may take out a few other guys too.

  • RG23/05/2009 at 16:28

Unless you qualify on pole and can pull away substantially - you've got to be damn lucky too.

almost certainly Felipe's lack of motivation ;)

1/4 of the grid have birthdays in January which is unacceptable. No drivers should be allowed birthdays in the off season.

do gp2 drivers need a superlicence? most wouldn't pass a cycling proficiency.

Lmao, I'm sure it's been brought up so apologies for digging up the quote but I fidn this a brilliant line by DC:

In 2006, I finished third here which was Red Bull's first-ever podium finish and I asked Prince Albert if he minded if I wore a superman cape to celebrate.

He said "of course not", so I am also the only driver in F1 history to wear a Superman cape on the podium in Monte Carlo.

    Hahahaha :D

On a personal note, Scott in Italy is probably going to be Scott in USA. Just got a job offer :) Need to work out the details to find out if it's really what I want. We've already spoken once but need to sort out the details so we'll see :)

this is the last round of the regular season. none of that hard core winter stuff. we have a few paid americans on the team, but the rest have "real" jobs so it's a smallish season - 10 rounds i think plus playoffs

Boston is a nice city. The downtown of Boston is a lot better now that they took the elevated highway down. I was there a few months ago and enjoyed it. However, good luck with accent.

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 18:12

If you think F1 stewards are harsh....listen to this....

    In todays World Series qualifying;

    - John Martin loses his best time because he crashed and caused a red flag 6th row to 10th row

    - Miguel Molina and Max Chilton also loose their fastest laps for "recieving outside assistance following trips off course" i.e span and marshalls helped them on their way again.

    How harsh is that!?!

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 18:13

    How harsh is that!?!

    Seems fine to me.

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 18:14

    Seems fine to me.

Thats like Ham being penalised for crashing.

And the someone else being penalised for spinning and then being pushed round again.

Seems a tad extreme to me

  • Scott Woodwiss23/05/2009 at 18:15

I think Rubens' team shirt looks awesome. Black and yellow looks like a good combo, with 23 on the back and RUBENS down the right sleeve.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 18:16

Thats like Ham being penalised for crashing.

And the someone else being penalised for spinning and then being pushed round again.

Common thing in junior and other series - if you cause a red flag in a practice session you lose your fastest time. Aimed at preventing accidents from over-eager drivers.

  • Scott Woodwiss23/05/2009 at 18:17

    How harsh is that!?!

It's not harsh if they received assistance because their engine had stalled. If their engines were running, I believe it would have been fine, but if they had stalled the engine and got it going again as a result of a push, that's against the rules.

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 18:25

Common thing in junior and other series - if you cause a red flag in a practice session you lose your fastest time. Aimed at preventing accidents from over-eager drivers.

Really? Never ever heard of that before.

It just seem a bit harsh penalising a driver if they've already been penalised by stopping, especially if it was the car that broke down (in other cases) and not your driving.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 18:27

It just seem a bit harsh penalising a driver if they've already been penalised by stopping, especially if it was the car that broke down (in other cases) and not your driving.

Well your stopping has ruined 23 other guys session, so...

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 18:29

Well your stopping has ruined 23 other guys session, so...

They still get the same length in time, so it's not all that bad.

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 18:39

Jenson looked awesome yet again. I feel for Rubens but Jenson is look so strong.

What has really surprised me is how the Brawn seems to be good on all tracks.

Look at Toyota two races back they were at the front of the grid now they at the back of the grid! So much for double/multiple diffuser giving so much advantage.

  • Nick23/05/2009 at 18:47

If he wins tomorrow, it's pretty much a forgone conclusion, isn't it? ;)

    :D

  • RG23/05/2009 at 19:41

buying bmw merchandise isn't going to help them be better, they're just rubbish, im sorry!

    My tactic,

    More items purchased

    More money for team

More money for people to be hired

More chance of creating a better car

    More chance of winning

More chance of winning the championship

And that is how I will make BMW win the 2010 Championships.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 19:43

And that is how I will make BMW win the 2010 Championships.

That's what I like about you RG, you're a funny guy

Kazuki Nakajima. Or, Jarno Trulli, he needs fans.

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 19:45

And that is how I will make BMW win the 2010 Championships.

So you're going to give them lots more money through buying stuff??

    2 words...

    Budget - Caps

    ;)

So is mine! They are at 9am for four consecutive days, from the day after Le Mans...

I can't moan really, generally all mine are spaced about a week apart, just a bit annoying! I remember GCSE exam time, i had around 20 exams, it was insane, but i'd much rather have 20 GCSE's than the 7 a-levels i have now ;)

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 20:27

If JV came back I'd be happy. :D

Also Johnny Herbert looks like a midget between Jake and DC.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 20:29

20 GCSEs? That's crazy. I had about ten although that was a while ago..

hehehe, 20 GCSE's would be insane thats like 40+ exams.

    and 7 a-levels! i struggle with 3

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 20:33

I don't know if anyone here has played forza 2 but it has the most insane telemetry data I've seen in a console racing game... almost scary how much it measures when you're racing.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:34

If JV came back I'd be happy. :D

As long as he gets some overalls that fit him and doesn't sing

20 GCSEs? That's crazy. I had about ten although that was a while ago..

i had 24 gcse exams, that was a crazy month. But i now have like 12 GCSEs so it kinda worked out. I must say having 6 exams for AS is much nicer :D

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:35

    3rd & 4th place are to-ing & fro-ing, Christine could do with some support

remember when we found GCSE's really hard? those were the days ;)

i want to go back now and take lots of random gcses's, or retake the gcse's that im doing my a-level subjects in.

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:37

i want to go back now and take lots of random gcses's, or retake the gcse's that im doing my a-level subjects in.

    that sounds like a plan!

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:38

    that sounds like a plan!

i'm sure i could get that a* in maths, and do a gcse in business now i've done the a-level. and redo my gcse tech cw, that would be awesome

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:38

remember when we found GCSE's really hard? those were the days ;)

no 2 and 1/2 hour papers then... oh those were the days.

  • Christine23/05/2009 at 20:38

I think 1st place is slightly unreachable!!

i'm sure i could get that a* in maths, and do a gcse in business now i've done the a-level. and redo my gcse tech cw, that would be awesome

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:39

no 2 and 1/2 hour papers then... oh those were the days.

haha yeah. a 2 hour gcse exam seemed like hard work, now i have 2.5 hour a-level maths exam, thats going to be grim

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:39

I think 1st place is slightly unreachable!!

    pah, nothing is impossible ;)

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:40

I think 1st place is slightly unreachable!!

That sounds like something Jenson might've said last year!

We shall see, aim for the podium

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:40

I wish I could've.... *mumbles bitterly at school*

you still can redo them, at any time.

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 20:41

you still can redo them, at any time.

It's not that, it's a long story I can't really be bothered to go into ;)

  • Rich23/05/2009 at 20:41

Can someone explain to me how Brawn appear to be competitive on every circuit? Other teams are going up and down the grid. Even last year there were Macca and Ferrari circuits. I know part of it is there really is very little difference between the front of the grid and the back (a little over 1.5 secs) but there is something else about the Brawn. Many predicted it would start well and decline during the season - there is no evidence of that.

I think I had a few subjects like that but not all of 'em.

a-level is 6 per subject plus any coursework. i do like it that way though, means its not all based on end of year exams

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:44

Can someone explain to me how Brawn appear to be competitive on every circuit?

it's cause Brawn are awesome! and they've spent the longest time developing their car, plus they have the dream team of Mr Brawn, Jens, Rubens, and various other amazing people.

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:44

    Only 2 and a 1/2?

that's long enough for me! plus it's only AS...

it's cause Brawn are awesome! and they've spent the longest time developing their car, plus they have the dream team of Mr Brawn, Jens, Rubens, and various other amazing people.

I thought it was just down to luck. ;)

  • RG23/05/2009 at 20:45

it's cause Brawn are awesome! and they've spent the longest time developing their car, plus they have the dream team of Mr Brawn, Jens, Rubens, and various other amazing people.

    Longer than BMW?

    Cos we messed ours up

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:45

Can someone explain to me how Brawn appear to be competitive on every circuit?

put simplistically....they spent alot longer designing the car than any other team, which shouldnt take anything away from them, but that helped them alot

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:45

    Evening all.

Hello Andy, I think I sent some business your way today

Convinced two separate people in PC World (don't ask) to get a Mac and go to the Apple Store instead. I didn't even approach them

    :D

  • Scott Woodwiss23/05/2009 at 20:45

    Evening all.

    Evening Mr. Taylor :)

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:45

a-level is 6 per subject plus any coursework. i do like it that way though, means its not all based on end of year exams

6 per subject?! i have 2 per subject atm...

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 20:45

that's long enough for me! plus it's only AS...

If its any consolation I found a2 to be far more enjoyable than a2 and the exams a lot more tolerable, hopefully the same will be said for your courses :)

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 20:45

Mine next month are 3 and a 1/2.

The test I did Thursday before last was 4 hours (finished it in 3 - at a quick pace)

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 20:46

If its any consolation I found a2 to be far more enjoyable than a2 and the exams a lot more tolerable, hopefully the same will be said for your courses :)

    a2 than as... tiredness.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 20:46

If its any consolation I found a2 to be far more enjoyable than a2 and the exams a lot more tolerable, hopefully the same will be said for your courses :)

So an a2 follows on from an AS?

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 20:46

Hello Andy, I think I sent some business your way today

    Good man. :)

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:47

So an a2 follows on from an AS?

    yepp

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:47

    a2 than as... tiredness.

i think in A2 you really get a grip of the workload and the step up from AS.

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:48

    Longer than BMW?

they were developing it at the beginning of the last season, and BMW only moved focus to their 09 car after Kubica's win right? Brawn had longer time...

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:48

6 per subject?! i have 2 per subject atm...

really?! most *ahem* normal subjects ;) have 3 per year, usually 1 in jan, 2 in summer, but you can do any at any time

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:49

put simplistically....they spent alot longer designing the car than any other team, which shouldnt take anything away from them, but that helped them alot

they did the sensible thing given their 08 circumstances.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 20:49

i think in A2 you really get a grip of the workload and the step up from AS.

In my day ( ;-) ) it was an A-level and you could do an AS if you wanted to, but they'd only just come in so they teachers just chopped the A-level in half and lumped us in with the a-level crowd. Meant I got my only ever 'U'.

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 20:49

If anyone's interested I've posted a couple of pictures detailing the telemtry data you can have on the screen whilst racing in forza 2, as I previously mentioned...

    general information

    tyre friction

    suspension

    wayyy too much tyre info

    various heat levels

    g forces

you dont have to have them on but it's kinda interesting to see the levels changing as you race... it simply knows too much!

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:50

really?! most *ahem* normal subjects ;) have 3 per year, usually 1 in jan, 2 in summer, but you can do any at any time

ooooh yeah that'll be cause my age is the first for the new alevel specifications ;)

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 20:50

Blah, blah, blah... and things. :p

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:50

    nout wrong with a U.

    (pre-empting results day...)

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:51

ooooh yeah that'll be cause my age is the first for the new alevel specifications ;)

ahhh, oh and you lot were the first who were going to have A*'s too....before they pulled them...

  • lou23/05/2009 at 20:52

ahhh, oh and you lot were the first who were going to have A*'s too....before they pulled them...

no one told me they pulled the A*s....

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 20:53

Well Prince Alberts voice totally wasn't what I was expecting.

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 20:54

    What were you expecting?

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:54

    What were you expecting?

    Something less American probably

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 20:55

And I've just managed to put lots of random images in my head with that comment. Including Prince Albert the wrestler and a Prince Albert...

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 20:55

no one told me they pulled the A*s....

i believe they have, but i may be wrong, ill have a look

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 20:56

    Something less American probably

Or a little more French at least. Plus maybe a bit deeper.

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 20:56

    Something less American probably

I thought he was German. Or is it a different Prince Albert? ;)

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:57

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:59

Is that a piece of toast on it?

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 20:59

Is that a piece of toast on it?

    Did Lukeh make it?

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 21:00

no one told me they pulled the A*s....

    ok...so i was wrong....kinda...

    they haven't pulled A*'s...however

you can't get A*'s at AS, you can only get them at A2, so if you get 90% or more overall with all your units then you get an A*

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 21:00

Not one for being all cute, but that is.

I think it's just the velcro effect with his wispy beard

  • Sara23/05/2009 at 21:00

It is... but on a cake?

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 21:00

    Did Lukeh make it?

for the main himself... i call it... 'a toast to rubens'

  • lou23/05/2009 at 21:01

And toast is good on everything.

  • Lukeh23/05/2009 at 21:03

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 21:03

it's nice isn't it? there is a nice black rubens t-shirt that you can buy ;)

    How much?

  • lou23/05/2009 at 21:03

you can't get A*'s at AS, you can only get them at A2, so if you get 90% or more overall with all your units then you get an A*

so they might as well have pulled them, i'll never get that...

well, i don't want to go to cambridge so that's fine for me :D

haha, i don't think it will make a huge amount of difference apart from

    a) people to show off

and b) less people will apply to cambridge

most uni's wont change their entry because of it

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 21:06

If he gets a saftey car at the right moment he could win it!

it's true, but if he waits for that long his tyres will be incredibly dead

  • Rich23/05/2009 at 21:28

so....Glock on hard tyres won't stop till lap 53...

Glock has been able to score while being at the back of the grid and from the pitlane. Tomorrow will not be such an occassion - the car is slow and overtaking near impossible. I am gutted about Timo being so slow.

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 21:28

  • Rich23/05/2009 at 21:29

If he gets a saftey car at the right moment he could win it!

yes but a safety car is more likely to be early where this strategy will have less advantage - but I can only hope.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 21:29

If it rains and most of the field crash out..

    True

    And avoids a spinning Kimi

  • Jon Waldock23/05/2009 at 21:30

I think you're clutching at straws, RG.

    he said it yesterday....

they're not slow until qualifying...and then they're just heavy ;)

  • Nick23/05/2009 at 21:30

yes but a safety car is more likely to be early where this strategy will have less advantage - but I can only hope.

about lap 16 would be perfect

Then why fuel so heavy, no point

  • RG23/05/2009 at 21:31

The way I see it when a driver I like qualies that low is:

    a) They may storm through the field, get no points but be entertaining

    b) I've no expectations or stress and can enjoy the race as a neutral

there's this, it keeps going between proper video and a static video at various places on the circuit. but combined with radiolemans, it's pretty awesome

  • RG23/05/2009 at 21:40

nope Jenson with the helmet he used during the 07 off season testing :)... i'll go get a life of my own soon i promise.

Thats one nice helmet. Like it better than his normal one.

  • Rich23/05/2009 at 21:41

awww I've come to the conclusion that Jessica and Jenson are such a cute couple! looook! awww

i do like that they seem basically normal.

They seem more natural than Lewis does with his doll!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/05/2009 at 21:41

There's a team in the N24 called "Team Frikidelli" - Team Danish Meatballs? Eh?

I knew they would screw it up given the chance. Quite why NASA didn't just land at Edwards is beyond. Shipping the shuttle across country is not that big a deal

Tell the astronauts that it is a bank holiday and we will be back on Tuesday. I know they closed the payload bay doors today so they will have lost a lot of water as the doors are radiators for cooling the interior. They can only fly with them closed for a few hours before they run out so they have to bring it down soon.

With Steven Roy bigging him up for so long, the Murray Walker effect has finally kicked in

I have been slagging Grosjean off all season and then he put in a couple of wins just to annoy me. I don't think the accident was his fault. the guy in front was weaving and blocking.

Oh and I've posted on Christine's blog entry about the Magsafe adapter with a potential solution. It's not a good idea to run the Mac without its battery though.

    why not?

ahh just read the comment on christine's blog. her answer is correct though.

rather a slow mac minus it's battery than no mac at all, which is basically the issue i'm facing at the moment.

both fans running at 6,000 rpm constantly from bootup to shut down when the battery is fitted.

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 22:36

    why not?

No battery means that the Macbook will underclock the processor. It will be slower than with the battery fitted.

I also use SMCfancontrol to take manual control of the fan speeds. By default the fans run at 2,000rpm and then the mac will suddenly decide it's too hot and ramp the fans up to maximum. Setting the minimum speed to 3,000rpm seems to stop this happening unless I'm doing something really strenuous on my machine.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 22:37

ahh just read the comment on christine's blog. her answer is correct though.

Is that because of dust? I had to fix LPG"s (PC) laptop power cable the other day, in itself a fine example of why MagSafe is such a great idea. I removed a lot of dust from the heatsink and it's been a lot happier since.

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 22:39

You've got to take it apart. Not a job for the faint hearted, plus you need something that will remove torx screws (ideally a torx screwdriver).

It may also be the fan controller.

I never mentioned earlier. I had the genius idea of putting my comfy armchair next to my PC, instead of the office chair. It isn't too much of a stretch to turn my head 90deg left to the TV..

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 22:50

you can buy air in a can?

Yeah and the can gets cold when you use it!

  • me23/05/2009 at 22:50

you can buy air in a can?

a godsend for old pc's. never thought of using it on a mac.

  • Pat W23/05/2009 at 22:50

I use it wherever there are small bits of stuff that need moving without touch.

  • Andy Taylor23/05/2009 at 22:52

you can buy air in a can?

It's not usually air, but it is canned.

  • me23/05/2009 at 22:52

    Isn't it smoke with electronics?

Once the smokes escapes it'll never work again

  • Bassano Clapper23/05/2009 at 23:02

    ooh, do tell?

Just cushioning for packaging expensive articles like £300,000 electrical boxes. Goes from small sheets, like bubble wrap (only the pockets are joined together so they don't burst)

To large individual bags, about the size of a family sized packet of Nachos, just full of air

8 hours after promising it, I've finally sat down to write my Monaco preview for the blog. I didn't realise it was this hard to do so without using cliches.

this year's favourite appears to be: "it's not a race, it's an event".

I'm desperately trying to avoid 'proximity of the barriers' but it's no good, it has to go in, its THE LAW
