It's the quiet before the storm now, with Free Practice under our belts and a whole day of confusion before we get to see qualifying. Hands up who thought it was the weekend today? Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • The Hamiltonometer has hit the highs, with Monaco giving him a boost so he now says: "I love this place – it reminds me how much I love this sport, why I love racing and why I love Formula 1." I dread to think what will happen when we get to Valencia.
  • Following the announcement of all those new teams, now there's a lot of backtracking going on with a few saying they have no intention of making the big leap up to F1. It's hardly surprising that all these rumours aren't true, but I bet Max is cursing each one.
  • Trulli has said it is much too early to write off Toyota's season as over, despite the lack of success they've seen recently. Today they were towards the wrong end of the timesheets, but apparently this isn't the end of the world as we know it. BMW are also still talking the talk, with Theissen encouraging his team not to give up. At what point will they switch to 2010 though? When they've decided whether they'll be in it or not?

That'll do for now. As it's Friday, let us know what you're up to for the weekend - it's a bank holiday weekend in the UK again, so plenty of time to recover from Monaco. As ever, I'll see you in the comments.

sorry, temporarily pulled it. the funny extended character is causing us too much work. will return upon release and successful test of fix.

would you rather us use the normal doohickey instead until further notice? If it's causing inconvienence I woudl happily move back to the land of browsers

I haven't been able to look at much news about practice and I'll read it after (or during :-) ) work tomorrow, so for me it's a normal schedule..Other things this weekend: play golf on Sat, Indy 500 if I can get a feed, watch some golf on BBC during weekend, do lots of homework on the supposed 'holiday'..

Speaking of Doohickey, I refereshed to get the new thread and it wouldn't let me press the "Post Comment" button, it was greyed out. I could get the text box up and that was it.

sometimes a random character appears in a comment. no reason and no pattern.

Help Needed. There was a Kimi Raikkonen video on youtube about a couple years ago about him in his Mclaren days. The song was great and I'm looking for it. It was a hard rock/Alt song, part of it went: You f***ed up, you threw it all away. Don't recall if that's in the right order in the song. I am running a 5K on Mon and I want that in the shuffle. Please help

nah, your fine. totally underestimated the take up of it. expected everyone to say "meh" and carry on with browsers.

temporarily stopping anyone else from getting attached to it though :)

If you define it as an 'application' under Chrome, it's almost like the Desktop Doohickey... :-)

it's a bug. if you refresh, you have to do a hard-refresh to get the post button back. basically hold shift and refresh pr close your browser.

that'll be fixed the same time as desktop.

No, most of the songs I run to are ones from the GP videos and such, mostly hard rock. Anyone remember the video. Most of it seemed to deal with his bad luck in 2005, the year he should have been WDC

I'm not totally convinced on it yet for everyday use. But for running stand-alone web applications as Gmail or the Doohickey it's pretty nice.

  • Jon Waldock21/05/2009 at 23:15

Yeah that grid thing. Thing is, i always have my homepage as BBC because it has news and F1, but i wouldn't visit it during normal browsing. So it's not like it would be on my grid.

I plan to try and finish my F1 stats this weekend, watch the quallies, keep tabs on the Nurburgring 24 hours, the Indy 500, attend a meeting to plan the Le Mans trip and somehow fit in the Monaco GP as I'll miss the Live broadcast :(

The little helmet was one DC wore as a tribute to Colin McRae and the background pic is Gilles at Zandvoort completely ignoring the fact that he has no left rear wheel or suspension. He got it back to the pits and berated his crew because they wouldn't fit a new wheel. They tried to explain that there was nothing left to attach a wheel too.

    murray's disbelief says it all.

Just showed what the guy was like. The whole lap was driven with one hand in the air to let everyone else know he was going slowly and he never got in the way of another driver despite only having two wheels in contact with the road most of the time. A whole lap and only 4 or 5 cars passed him.

He played to different rules to anyone else.

  • Pat W21/05/2009 at 23:40

Tell you what, FRenaults on telly at Thruxton are more fun than watching them in person at Thruxton. All down to the onboard cameras in the quick stuff which is out of bounds.

  • Steven Roy21/05/2009 at 23:40

But you have to wonder why he did it when (a) he'd lost so much time and (b) he could have seriously injured himself?

As Nigel Roebuck once said he was the only one out there working without a safety net. With his attitude to risk that was nothing. He thought it was just a puncture which at the start it was so in his mind it was necessary to get to th pits as quickly as possible to get back into the race.

Cars were a lot less reliable then so losing 30 seconds was no big deal.

  • Steven Roy21/05/2009 at 23:41

Thought so. A great relief after the M28 and M29

yep 1981 it debuted. Old racing line has heaps of historical features which is odd considering rons column at the start of the issue says "i am well known amongst my colleagues not to dwell too much on historical motor racing matters"

Bernie could sue Ferrari if they walk away

seems fair enough. would it be enough for ferrari to give a damn though?

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 00:50

seems fair enough. would it be enough for ferrari to give a damn though?

Probably not, if they really want to go they will. If they go for a breakaway i expect bernie would be involved to some degree as well.

But it is another tick in the 'stay' column, and it ads to the cost of trying to relaunch Ferrari in a sportscar series. It also gives the other teams who arent so wealthy something to think about. The times is so often bernie's mouthpiece

  • me22/05/2009 at 00:50

ahh yes, of course. good point.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 00:59

ahh yes, of course. good point.

of course, the big question is, what if a majority, if not all, of the current teams walk away to organize a breakaway? i don't think bernie will sue of all of them, when he can make more money by joining them instead?

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 00:59

I'm surprised Bernie hasn't told them this yet in private, considering Bernie has also told them to go challenge the FIA in EU courts.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 01:34

because he wants to keep all the current teams - and the only way he can do that is by getting rid of max. and the only way to get rid of max is if someone pushes him out. if france can't do it, maybe the eu can. something along the lines of steven's path of thinking...

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 01:38

a successful breakaway in itself would be getting rid of max without pushing him out of the FIA. But as Mr Benson has stated, this is a difficult proposition for the teams, since they can't even agree on doing it yet.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 01:42

It wont be a breakaway, just a complete reboot, bernie owns the commercial rights to f1 so he would bring the f1 title with him, the championship would probably look the same as it does now, with the teams probably getting more cash

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 01:43

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 01:46

unless they play it to make cvc default and go bust, then buy the rights themselves from administrators

Bernie will buy the rights back from CVC at a reduced price. All the stuff that is happening now rather conveniently makes their investment look very shaky. Bernie will probably be talking to them now and telling them how bad he feels that he got them into this and how he can't give them what they gave him for it but he will give them a fair price in the current market. The current market being a global recession and the sport in uproar.

  • Joe22/05/2009 at 01:46

    Amy,

A few years ago on youtube, there was a Kimi video centered on his Mclaren days. It was a hard rock/Alt. song. There was a part of the song that sang: "You f***ed, you threw it all away". I'm running a 5k on Monday and would like to add it to my shuffle. Any ideas?

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 01:46

start a new series, then settle bernies lawsuits by giving FOM the commercial rights and letting them organise it

    got a link?

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 01:49

How do you break away without breaking away?

You cut out the FIA. You keep the commercial contracts, the circuit contracts, the TV contracts etc. Same teams, same races. Bernie once he buys the rights back can then take a smaller percentage from the new series to get it going knowing that the economy is picking up and once it is establshed all the teams are committed as they own a share and in 3 or 4 years he can sell his assets at a massive profit again.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 01:49

He would risk being up for antitrust. The best solution for him would for the teams to buy the rights and let him manage it for a large amount of money for 5 years

Bernie won't let anyone else get their hands on the assets. The teams will effectively own the championship with him taking 20% instead of 50%

He has to meet Jonathan Palmer himself as well. Is that a good thing or a bad thing. I find whenever he speaks it sounds like he's putting on a voice, like he's commentating or doing a piece to camera. He doesn't have a normal way of speaking, I find.

"What do you think of this year with your old team and your old team mate doing all the winning?

It’s good to see that the team I built up is now winning, because at the time I was highly criticised for building up the team and racing for it. And nobody thought it would ever succeed.’"

BMW are also still talking the talk, with Theissen encouraging his team not to give up. At what point will they switch to 2010 though? When they’ve decided whether they’ll be in it or not?

Cannot really 'switch' to 2010 untill we have a rule book for 2010 (or at least, a rulebook which has a passing chance of still being in use in 2010)

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 08:11

what a quote from Mr. Saward :-)

It's worrying and funny at the same time... ;)

I have question for UK people. I am not sure the place I will be staying at during British GP (a bed and breakfast place) will have internet connection. Is there any way how can someone visiting UK for few days get some sort of internet access (mobile internet etc) ?

are the multiple pics of whitmarsh eating an apple, in drop.io, part of the hardest spot-the-difference competition in the world. or have they been uploaded multiple times?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 10:04

are the multiple pics of whitmarsh eating an apple, in drop.io, part of the hardest spot-the-difference competition in the world. or have they been uploaded multiple times?

Maybe someone just really enjoyed that picture?

    That is very bizarre!

  • F1Wolf22/05/2009 at 10:09

are the multiple pics of whitmarsh eating an apple, in drop.io, part of the hardest spot-the-difference competition in the world. or have they been uploaded multiple times?

that would be probably my fault. tried to upload 2-3 times but always got error message, no idea why

looking at the pics, wouldn't it be really weird to eat with eat plugs in? wouldn't you hear every crunch inside your head?

  • me22/05/2009 at 10:13

Update from Flav's boat - everyone Flav doesn't like has been told to walk the plank. Everyone took the opportunity to get away.

  • F1Wolf22/05/2009 at 10:36

Has anyone seen this on the BBC Mole's blog? A guest entry from Lee...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/05/the-mole-gives-you-lee-mckenzi.html

It's more about what she's been doing but it's still pretty good :)

  • me22/05/2009 at 11:48

Has anyone seen this on the BBC Mole's blog? A guest entry from Lee...

    wtf?

the bbc are stupid, stupid, stupid people. why doesn't she just have a blog of her own? and ted too?

  • Christine22/05/2009 at 11:51

the bbc are stupid, stupid, stupid people. why doesn't she just have a blog of her own? and ted too?

Or one big blog that everyone writes in.

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 11:51

the bbc are stupid, stupid, stupid people. why doesn't she just have a blog of her own? and ted too?

I just watched an interview with jenson from ted, so thankfully he is actually there because so far, I haven't heard from him once since before the spanish gp!

dont see why they dont get their own blogs though.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 11:51

the bbc are stupid, stupid, stupid people. why doesn’t she just have a blog of her own? and ted too?

    Because she DOES: www.leemckenzie.tv

    Ted really doesn't, I think...

  • me22/05/2009 at 11:52

    Because she DOES: www.leemckenzie.tv

why doesn't she have a bbc blog?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 11:53

    Because she DOES: www.leemckenzie.tv

to be fair, brundle has an article in a newspaper, legard does too elsewhere I believe etc but they all still have bbc f1 blogs, just seems a bit wierd the two people getting the nitty gritty, or so we'd expect, in the paddock, with the drivers and with the more technical stuff seem to be ignored at times.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 11:59

why doesn’t she have a bbc blog?

Good question. No idea why. ;)

  • Benji22/05/2009 at 12:14

Ted used to have a really good ITV blog, maybe having ITV DNA counts against him at the bbc ;)

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:25

Now this is weird. From JA:

team owners are all on Flavio Briatores boat planning their next move. Didn't see anyone from Brawn going on board..

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 12:27

team owners are all on Flavio Briatores boat planning their next move. Didn't see anyone from Brawn going on board..

Huh, surely someone from brawn mustve gone?

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:28

And this is why I should stick with Webber (as I'm sticking with Vettel anyway):

Red Bull mechanics had some sleep last night after two all-nighters, fitting the new 'go-faster' parts to the car

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:29

Huh, surely someone from brawn mustve gone?

Either they've decided to skip it (which would be a VERY bad sign for FOTA), or JA just missed it (which is probably and hopefully the case).

  • lou22/05/2009 at 12:31

team owners are all on Flavio Briatores boat planning their next move. Didn't see anyone from Brawn going on board..

maybe they were already there?... or are late? ross brawn wouldnt not send someone to a fota meeting, would he?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 12:32

Either they've decided to skip it (which would be a VERY bad sign for FOTA), or JA just missed it (which is probably and hopefully the case).

I'm gonan go with he missed it, i can't see why Brawn would'nt go

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:32

And a nice blog entry from JA to set the scene too.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:34

I’m [gonna] go with he missed it, i can’t see why Brawn would’nt go

Although not probable, it's possible that Brawn have agreed on a separate deal with Max and Bernie...

  • Flibster22/05/2009 at 12:36

Although not probable, it's possible that Brawn have agreed on a separate deal with Max and Bernie...

With a veto and an extra $80mil? ;)

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:39

With a veto and an extra $80mil? ;)

Sure, why not? If Ferrari are leaving, someone needs to take over the veto power. ;)

  • me22/05/2009 at 12:42

And a nice blog entry from JA to set the scene too.

and this point is a good one:

"If Ferrari leaves F1, along with other major manufacturers, then I can guarantee you that RAI, along with all the main TV companies, would take legal action to review our contract."

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 12:43

I have come to the decision that my Brawn isn't doing as well as Brawn are in real life... :P

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:43

Love BritsOnPole's tweet - back to the 80s!

"It's much too late to find / you think you've changed your mind / you'd better change it back or we will both be sorry..."

  • me22/05/2009 at 12:43

I have come to the decision that my Brawn isn't doing as well as Brawn are in real life... :P

    you found a shortcut?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 12:44

    you found a shortcut?

yep, the 'lets spin around on the first corner' one :D

    Influenced by Monaco I am

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 12:45

“If Ferrari leaves F1, along with other major manufacturers, then I can guarantee you that RAI, along with all the main TV companies, would take legal action to review our contract.”

Which is why Bernie won't let Ferrari go if there's no breakaway that will follow it.

How much does Max care for Bernie right now? That's a question that needs to be asked...

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 13:17

Oops. Made a boo-boo there. Actual post is below.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 13:17

Not sure if RealBrawnGP just got this from JA, or if he has his own source:

FOTA meeting to discuss the sports future. Brawn seem strangely absent...

  • Flibster22/05/2009 at 13:33

    Heads up!

ESPN Classic *Sky channel 442* is now showing the 1965 Monaco GP and follows that with the 1969 Monaco GP.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 13:48

Morning everyone, If JA is to be believed they will all be diving off the boat right about now

  • Flibster22/05/2009 at 13:51

    8O

Completely off the F1 for the moment.

Ghostbusters 3 is go! With all the original cast! :D

Talking about Jacques and the open feeling he seems to have with F1, can anyone see him coming back into the sport with one of the new teams?

hell, USGP will want a bit of experience surely going into the sport, I'm wondering if he's been eyeing them down, perhaps talking with Windsor about a possible role. Surely no coincedence he's popped back up in Monaco as he talks about a possible return...

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:01

Who needs jacques for experience when you have scott speed?

I think hes a given for one of the seats and Andrettii is probably a shoe in for the other

  • Flibster22/05/2009 at 14:05

Who needs jacques for experience when you have scott speed?

Depends on how well he does in NASCAR really.

He seems to be doing alright.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:12

Depends on how well he does in NASCAR really.

Yeah, i think he still has unfinished business in f1

Has anyone played Racedriver: GRID? is it any good?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 14:15

Has anyone played Racedriver: GRID? is it any good?

It's fantastic, it's a mix of arcade and simulation though more towards the arcade side of things gameplay wise but still very very good. What platform you thinking of buying it on? A few of us here have it on the 360 and PC.

  • Andrew22/05/2009 at 14:16

On whether Brawn went to the meeting or not....

Have a look at the photo on the gazzetta's mainpage.

    http://www.gazzetta.it/

Possibly the back of Fry's head by the pillar? I don't know, anybody want to name everyone at the table?!

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 14:17

Makes sense to me and they are both are American racing icons of a sort.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 14:17

I don't know it anyone mentioned it but the world is back on its axis and Christine can relax. NASA have decided that the space shuttle cannot land any time today.

Nect landing opportunity is at 9:16am EDT2:16pm UK tomorrow at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Typical afte all that planning NASA want to land during qualifying so that I miss both.

    Ahhh norrmality.

  • me22/05/2009 at 14:45

that's a good question. was it a short race or something?

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:46

OK, ill put it here so i don't forget it myself

Should Ferrari have an asterisk next to the number of world championships they have won, as they clearly haven't been on an equal footing to the other teams for the past 4 years?

  • Joe22/05/2009 at 14:47

Should Ferrari have an asterisk next to the number of world championships they have won, as they clearly haven't been on an equal footing to the other teams for the past 4 years?

Kind of like all the records in MLB with the steriods?

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 14:47

why couldn't they just give them drive throughs at the time?

It's the FIA. They have to find the stupidest answer to any situation.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:48

Kind of like all the records in MLB with the steriods?

Yeah, not saying they cheated, but all might have been not quite fairly achived

I think there should be a zero after the 4 and possible the 4 should be a 6

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 14:49

interesting that mercedes are present, along with mclaren. and toyota have x2 people.

Who are the two Toyota people? I see Tadashi but not John.

  • Jon Waldock22/05/2009 at 14:49

that's a good question. was it a short race or something?

probably about 30 minutesish, depends whether it was the sprint or feature race

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 14:50

You may need to explain the asterisk to the non-Americans or at least those who don't follow American sports where this thing happens

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:50

I think there should be a zero after the 4 and possible the 4 should be a 6

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 14:53

You may need to explain the asterisk to the non-Americans or at least those who don't follow American sports where this thing happens

I think its used for players who are suspected of having used performance enhancing drugs at some point in their careers, although this cant be definitively proved, or certain which points of a career were under the influence of drugs.

Its put next to their career stats to reflect the fact that the record may not be valid in comparison to others

    can't hurt to try it.

i personally like the simplest route, and that is to ask in the comments about half hour before the conversation. on the other hand the wiki might be the perfect solution, give it a shot and we'll see.

    fanx you.

Famous people like me shouldn't need to do stuff like this.

You will be hearing from my agent

  • RG - Doomed22/05/2009 at 15:06

    Good, afternoon, all.

    Anything happend today?

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 15:07

Been thinking about get an RC Helicopter (boys and their toys as I have got too old and too injured I sold my Aprilia race bike)

That looks incredible. Looks like an awful lot of work though for something that can only fly for a minute.

  • me22/05/2009 at 15:07

don't look at me, i'm just the numbers man.

    Sorry, I was at school

Who are the two Toyota people? I see Tadashi but not John.

    sat behind him, isn't he?

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 15:09

    Nothing whatsoever. :(

The shuttle didn't land. Nothing happened in F1 and most of the GP2 race didn'y bother with the first corner at Monaco.

    Nothing.

According to James Allen USF1 and Campos have put in entries for next season

is there any penalty for entering and then pulling out later? if not, them i'm hardly surprised.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 15:17

From the commander of the next space shuttle mission during training

Performing our 2nd rendezvous to ISS. Our radar has failed, as well as our primary laser ranging system, but we're working through it.

Maybe you shouldn't be tweeting then. Sort the problem out first. I think the next mission could go a bit piquet

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 15:18

is there any penalty for entering and then pulling out later? if not, them i'm hardly surprised.

Not sure any more. They don't have to place the $48 million bond any more but there must be an entry fee.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 15:18

Quite correct gentlemen - so that is John. So who is the guy next to Martin?

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 15:24

And someone already showed the pic! Hehe.

I see (counterclockwise from Bernie) Flav, Howett, Yamashina, Dr. Mario?, who's the guy in the suit?, Martin, Christian, Stefano, and Norbert.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/05/2009 at 15:24

Oh, and afternoon all. Excursion across the border was succesful - bought a camera and a radio, 48 cans beer, 48 cans coke, 24 cans orange, spring water and Red Bull, loads of sausages and 12 bottles of wine. We passed 4x4's with cans filling up to the roof, so we felt like we could have done better ;)

I see (counterclockwise from Bernie) Flav, Howett, Yamashina, Dr. Mario?, who's the guy in the suit?, Martin, Christian, Stefano, and Norbert.

nick fry may be wearing the suit.

i notice in the background there's a professional video camera tripod. wonder if there's a camera sat atop it, and if so why are they filming?

  • lou22/05/2009 at 15:48

assuming the mysterious guy is a brawn rep. all teams accounted for.

i'm trying to find out who he is, he isn't mentioned or anything on brawn's website and why Brawn or Nick Fry wouldn't be there themselves is beyond me. especially as Brawn said his plans for today and early next week depend on whether this all gets sorted... well i think that's what he said yesterday anyway...

  • the Blue Orange Lion22/05/2009 at 15:48

All I know is that the yacht is called Force Blue or something like that. Maybe Flav could rename it "F1 Blues" after today?

I can't seem to find the Stig amongst all the beautiful people on board. I'm hearing he'll be entering F1 as well with Stig Super-Dupertec F1 Team in 2010.

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 15:49

So Brawn needed someone to go for them, perhaps?

Well they could've asked me, or lou, or dom! Or other brawn fans!

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 15:50

Although to be fair, if I went to a team principals meeting I'd spend the entire time looking at Dr Mario with a smile, replying 'Okily dokily do!' whenever he spoke to me so maybe not such a good idea...

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 15:50

All I know is that the yacht is called Force Blue or something like that. Maybe Flav could rename it "F1 Blues" after today?

It is Force Blue and during normal times you can charter it for not an inconsiderable sum think I prefer F1 Blues to describeRenault F1 at the moment.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 15:51

F1 Blues to describe Renault F1 at the moment

Their time will come, don't worry, it's common to spit on Renault these days, nothing more than a trend among F1 fans. The moment Alonso produces a good race people will be saying something like: wow, I predicted Renault would come back and they did.

F1 Blues sums up BMW's season correctly. It's back to good old Sauber days. Maybe a repeat of 2000 or maybe classic 2005 with crazy JV driving.

  • Scott in Italy22/05/2009 at 15:57

Can we just call them Sauber and paint the car blue and it'll be happy RG who couldn't care anymore.

Alonso is awesome. Possibly the best driver on the grid. I even have to defend him to my Spanish colleagues sometimes!

  • me22/05/2009 at 16:01

I think classic Sauber colour scheme was much better. I caught JV testing 2005 Sauber car on one occasion in Jerez and it had much better track presence that this whiter-than-white laundry thing or washing machine current paintjob.

I agree. Bring back Sauber, keep the current guys in charge though. Even though its still Sauber, but less BMW backing. I'm confusing myself now.

Just paint the damn car blue.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 16:04

It is lucky for BMW Sauber they have Nick - but neither expect much at Monaco - waiting till Turkey - I think they should be thinking about next year - oops I forgot they started this years car earlier than almost anyone else except Honda/Brawn and gave up on the championship.

To be honest this meeting reminds me of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (director's cut) moment when Waters, Gilmour & Wright discuss oysters: The oysters are very good! Seems to be the right time of year! Yeah, the oysters are very good! Are they French oysters? Dunno, I'd like to think that oysters transcend national barriers.

  • Scott in Italy22/05/2009 at 16:08

    Yes.

Thanks. I think I'm going to be offline and just kicking back on the balcony - might put the radio on. I'm sure the italians will interrupt whatever is on for F1 news!

They also had a dog with them - to be precise a Borzoi called Mademoiselle Nobs. My dog has agree to represent the team but she is not a Borzoi or even Afghan - just and African dog with some terrier and very long legs!

    From Joe’s Blog

You bet, it's his best article in years. I take my hat off.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 16:23

"It is my lucky day. Well, it is if you believe the Chinese. According to their logic a person who is the victim of a bird **** strike will get a lot of luck. I must say that I didn’t feel that lucky when the Monagasque seagull dumped his lunch on me from a very great height this afternoon. Hell, how can one be glamorous in Monte Carlo when you are spattered with guano?"

Makes a change from F1 being all bullsh*t.

    Tweet from Will Buxton:

Still waiting for FOTA news. So while they're all farting about on a boat, I'm going to grab a beer at Red Bull. Salut.

"The sport's team bosses were spotted travelling in dinghies from the Monaco harbour to Flavio Briatore's moored triple-storey super-yacht Force Blue, before they sat down for a pre-meeting lunch."

Looks like folks from F1-Dead know a thing or two 'bout the meeting. Super-yacht? Come on! No wonder young F1 fans are so spoilt these days.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 16:26

Here is a link to Pink Floyd and Mademoiselle nobs live at Pompei - I had a Borzoi once - the cleverest dog I have ever owned but are something of an acquired test as they can be aloof most of the time and really silly the rest of the time! I could see her participating like this too!

    Nucular?

Not sure where the BBC said this, but apparently, if nothing can be agreed by today's end, ALL the teams will withdraw.

    Game on.

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 16:28

    Huh, surely someone from brawn mustve gone? {Comment #262}

I think the teams who basically agree with the budget cap (Force India, Williams, Brawn) aren't bothering with this meeting because it is meant to placate those team bosses who don't like the idea. It's not like any of the three are going to boycott F1 if the budget cap is removed or modified...

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 16:28

    ALL teams?!

    To be frank.. Bloody hell!

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 16:29

    Woah woah woah.

I'm surprised they all agreed to it, to be honest.

Oh, but wait, Bernie was at that lunch, right? ;)

    Time to go gently, Max...

Since that was stated, we've determined that they all went to the meeting. You might want to jump to the latest entries - something's up.

As long as they stay united, I wouldn't panic too much. Remember, this position was agreed upon in the presence of Mr. E himself, so this is part of the plan.

The BBC didn't say that at all... This is the latest from their feed: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8064314.stm

"Fota is now an organisation with a common view.

"We will not enter the championship with these rules and with this governance, so we have to discuss about the possibility to change the situation in a constructive way but in a very clear way because we want Formula 1 we don't want something different."

Di Montezemolo did not elaborate on what Fota's position might be.

We haven't got a group of teams wanting one thing, and another group of teams wanting another thing, so as far as I'm concerned all 10 staying together is the best thing they can do at the moment, as daramatic as it sounds.

Right - any idea what CAPSIS' track record is when it comes to these things? It was run by F1-Live, which is owned by ESPN.

    How about CAPSIS?

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 16:38

Unless the Internet is behind the radio. But that would be odd. Still, if the BBC reported it, it must be legit.

This morning I sent to Christine an email of the proposed letter that FOTA should be sending to Max - it went a bit further and not only said all teams would withdraw, but that Max needs to resign his position by 29 May for them to reconsider (with of course dropping the budget caps)

  • RG - Doomed22/05/2009 at 16:38

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 16:42

BTW, for those thinking Max will resign, I doubt it. I don't think the teams will even ask for an immediate resignation. They'll give him a graceful exit - perhaps a simple announcement of retirement by reiterating that he won't run this election.

I think what we're witnessing today is classic bands-fall-apart situation. It's like Lennon (FOTA) blaming McCartney (Mad Max or the FIA) for writing the wrong kind of songs. Only now we have internet & can follow it live with images & video. Maybe GP1 will be Lennon's new project and McCartney will soon put out a new version of F1 called "Formula 1 - Maybe I'm Amazed". Sort of.

Granted the items they define as tax deductible are different. Zuma essentially interfered with the judicial process to avoid fraud and a prison sentence- I would gladly swap him for Gordon Brown!

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 17:02

    News 24?

yeah, although its usually listed at 6:45 and i get the last 60 secconds

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:04

Well, that's my business plan blown out of the water

I had thoughts about be the strategic analyst for FOTA but they came to the same strategy I worked out.

I am pleased it will give Max something to think about and hopefully a lot more hair loss (he has already gone white)

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:05

    from fakeFIApress

We are not at all concerned about the teams all leaving as there aren't any #fakef1 teams anyway!

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:06

Is this the small boat Flav uses to get to his big boat?

    *faints*

    Not just Ferrari..

It's just like British Layland in the 70's.

    One out - all out

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:09

Wait, are you guys saying that Ferrari have actually gone and done it?!

Not just Ferrari - ALL the teams have threatened to pull out if the cap is not dropped. And if they walk, Monaco have said they will walk too.

    Can you say "breakaway"?

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:09

    One out - all out

    Bingo.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:10

    Not just Ferrari..

It's just like British Layland in the 70's.

    With less rust

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 17:10

FOTA were very strategic in when to pick the fight with Max!

    :D

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 17:11

it'll all get sorted out. don't worry.

It will, i'm extremely calm about this. Like I said earlier, this is a good thing if anything personally.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:11

FOTA were very strategic in when to pick the fight with Max!

Getting Monaco on their side was a HUGE bonus.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:11

So far, for 2010 we have Campos Racing and... no one else

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:11

It will, i'm extremely calm about this. Like I said earlier, this is a good thing if anything personally.

agreed. it seems shocking at first, but it's FOTA's (and the fans') best shot at winning the battle against max.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:11

Is it wrong that I have a vision of Bernie walking into Max's office and placing a pistol on his desk and telling him it is time to do the honourable thing.

Knowing Max he would probably shoot Bernie

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:12

It will, i'm extremely calm about this. Like I said earlier, this is a good thing if anything personally.

It will be a really good thing if they can also get Max removed from office - he is actually the person that caused this with authoritarian approach.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:12

    USF1.

Have they actually submitted their entry yet?

    The window opened today

  • lou22/05/2009 at 17:12

the only thing leaving formula 1 will be Max, Bernie was at the meeting after all. bye bye max.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:13

It will, i'm extremely calm about this. Like I said earlier, this is a good thing if anything personally.

    I think it is fabulous

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:13

yes, they have. PW confirmed it in the NYT.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:13

I hear he's going with White

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:13

    That would be understating it.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:13

yes, they have. PW confirmed it in the NYT.

    Today?

  • Jesus Christ22/05/2009 at 17:14

He hasn't declared a position yet.

I'm not a fan of that Max dude. Send him out, I would, but Dad took away my powers again.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:14

Have they actually submitted their entry yet?

Campos and USF1 entered this morning

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:14

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:15

    Today?

    Yes.

OK, I'm officially starting the list, after I find the NYTimes report

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:15

Campos and USF1 entered this morning

    As USF1 or USGPE?

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:16

I'm not a fan of that Max dude. Send him out, I would, but Dad took away my powers again.

It's like watching Little Nicky ;)

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:16

OK, I'm officially starting the list, after I find the NYTimes report

No need - AUTOSPORT already reported it. Finding that will do.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:16

    As USF1 or USGPE?

    USGPE.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:16

Mosley and Mugabe twins split at birth! Both will be really difficult to get out of office!

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:16

Now's about the time they hog-tie him and throw him overboard isn't it?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 17:18

    Oh Go on

    :D

It's like rex Banner from The Simpsons!

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:18

Erm, Bassano, who's saying what? :P I'd think FOTA is the calmer party right now...

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:18

    John Howett still there?

    They all are.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:18

    John Howett still there?

Did he attend the meeting with Max as well? - That is one angry chappie when it comes to Max!

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:19

Erm, Bassano, who's saying what? :P I'd think FOTA is the calmer party right now...

    Probably Max by now :D

Have you ever seen Father Ted, Journeyer?

If not, you should rectify immediately

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 17:19

It's like rex Banner from The Simpsons!

"You should have paid the expenses"

    "In retrospect, yes!"

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:19

Now's about the time they hog-tie him and throw him overboard isn't it?

    Arrrrg!

But seriously, as I said earlier, they won't ask for his head... yet. Like most dictators, he'll be offered a graceful exit. Stating his retirement along with reiterating that he won't run again should do nicely...

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 17:20

    *opens photoshop*

This news calls for drastic action.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:21

But seriously, as I said earlier, they won't ask for his head... yet. Like most dictators, he'll be offered a graceful exit. Stating his retirement along with reiterating that he won't run again should do nicely...

I would feel more confient with Bernie offering him the honourable option.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:21

I would feel more [confident] with Bernie offering him the honourable option.

An intriguing option, for sure, but let's be realistic here. :D

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:21

Now's about the time they hog-tie him and throw him overboard isn't it?

You need to make it more of a public spectacle - blind-fold him make him walk the plank and ensure some hungry sharks are in attendance and make sure you get as much TV coverage as possible!

Actually this might back fire, the sharks might recognize him as one of them - well better make sure they are cannibalistic sharks.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:22

I would feel more confient with Bernie offering him the honourable option.

I would feel more confident if he was kicked out of the door quite sharply

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 17:22

If max goes does Ron come back?

  • Flibster22/05/2009 at 17:22

If max goes does Ron come back?

    In Max's job? ;)

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:23

If max goes does Ron come back?

Nah - no point in taking back from Martin a job that was groomed to be his anyway.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:23

This news calls for drastic action.

    Please do something creative!

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:23

If max goes does Ron come back?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves shall we

    But that would be funny

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 17:24

Nah - no point in taking back from Martin a job that was groomed to be his anyway.

he could be like Luca. Turn up, look serious and important...

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:24

OK, I'm officially starting the list, after I find the NYTimes report

Nothing on Autosport for USGPE and New York Times>Sport>Formula 1 link goes to Spanish Grand Prix results

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:25

If max goes does Ron come back?

No but I am sure he has nice drink in one hand to celebrate and a smile on his face.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:25

Nothing on Autosport for USGPE and New York Times>Sport>Formula 1 link goes to Spanish Grand Prix results

Really? Odd. JA mentioned it on Twitter, so it should be around somewhere.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:26

Where's Mr and Mrs C when they need to be here to see this?

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 17:26

    San Luis, please! :D

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:26

    Me too.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 17:26

Really? Odd. JA mentioned it on Twitter, so it should be around somewhere.

He mentions a lot of things, maybe he knows of their intention to sign

    Not the same thing

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 17:26

Where’s Mr and Mrs C when they need to be here to see this?

At work I should imagine. Well, in the case of Mr C, sleeping? :P

  • Jon Waldock22/05/2009 at 17:26

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 17:27

So...in factual statements. (Factual being the word)...whats going on?

Saw your tweet, John. Other than LDM's statement of FOTA withdrawing if this isn't settled, not much.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 17:30

    Talking to Joe?

I don't think so. We were discussing questions earlier and Mr C said he would ask in the comments half an hour before the show and he has not asked yet.

If anyone has questions for Joe they can be put on the wiki at http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Questions+for+Joe

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 17:37

    that’s a good question. was it a short race or something? {Comment #307}

No, it was the GP2 feature race. There should have been time for a drive-through.

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 17:40

    is there any penalty for entering and then pulling out later? if not, them i’m hardly surprised. {Comment #343}

Yes. The teams forfeit the €309,000 entry fee for the year.

Probably not a worry in itself to the established teams.

  • Jon Waldock22/05/2009 at 17:42

    wow, inside f1 was rubbish

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 17:42

    agreed. but when does that need to be paid? {Comment #350}

It has to be paid by November 1 2009, but the obligation to pay it exists from the moment of entry, so voluntary withdrawal doesn't get a team out of having to pay the fee.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 17:43

Yes. The teams forfeit the €309,000 entry fee for the year.

Does that mean an entry fee costs less than a superlicence?

  • Jon Waldock22/05/2009 at 17:43

Does that mean an entry fee costs less than a superlicence?

    depends who you are ;)

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 17:46

    BTW, where’s Williams and Force India? No surprise Toro Rosso is missing. {Comment #360}

I don't know where Williams was, but clubforce reckoned Force India was split between the garage (doing some work to the cars) and PR activities. I suppose those teams will be acting in accordance to the results of the meeting rather than feeling the need to listen to 100 minutes or so of hot air...

Not Mr Tozzi, by any chance? If it is, any hope of progress in the meeting was doomed from the start because he'd have needed most of the meeting for his opening remarks...

The main concern here will be what to do with the new teams who want to enter (Campos, USF1, Lola). FOTA will have to provide some form of assistance to these teams (at least in Year 1) so that the lack of a cap won't make them decide not to join in 2010.

I think USF1 should be ok, they were even considering going outside the budget.

It will be interesting to see if Lola and Campos are serious about joining without the cap

and iSport too, if they indeed are interested... if this is the main sticking point now, I think we'll be all right. and we'll get a 26-car grid next year. :D

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 17:59

I think USF1 should be ok, they were even considering going outside the budget.

There were intending entering before the budget caps were discussed so it does not affect them.

It will be interesting to see if Lola and Campos are serious about joining without the cap

They might have to re-consider - but it was Max making promises without consultation of the participating teams. I do not see why the current teams should help them out in any way. Possibly Max should help them to finance a competitive car.

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 18:02

They might have to re-consider - but it was Max making promises without consultation of the participating teams. I do not see why the current teams should help them out in any way. Possibly Max should help them to finance a competitive car.

    Three reasons:

    1. Everyone (yes, even FOTA) want to see a full 26-car grid. And as the Brawn-Mercedes example has so clearly shown, having a 2nd team can be helpful so long as it's done properly.

    2. Public image - I'm sure FOTA don't want to be seen as the reason why new teams couldn't join F1 because they didn't want the cap. So helping them start up should be a good way to counter that.

    3. Concession to Max - yes, this isn't ideal, but if it'll make Max relent and agree to their demands, why not?

I dont think they do. clearly only paying the top ten makes 13 teams unsustainable, so unless the teams get a bigger share out of bernies money they wont want to risk diluting their tv incomes

They only get money the year after their participation and in the case of Brawn it was being argued they would not get it this year since they competed under the Honda name last year.

I am not sure FOTA would object to have another three teams but they will not necessarily give them extra concessions to compete (and why should they?)

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 18:10

  • Journeyer22/05/2009 at 18:11

I am not sure FOTA would object to have another three teams but they will not necessarily give them extra concessions to compete (and why should they?)

Max will argue that the reason the cap was put in the first place is to help smaller teams compete. The goal in itself is a good one; only the execution left much to be desired. If FOTA can achieve Max's goal without using his method, then there's nothing else Max can say against the teams.

  • Pat W22/05/2009 at 18:14

Oh, and afternoon all. Excursion across the border was succesful - bought a camera and a radio, 48 cans beer, 48 cans coke, 24 cans orange, spring water and Red Bull, loads of sausages and 12 bottles of wine. We passed 4×4’s with cans filling up to the roof, so we felt like we could have done better

Dear, dear, dear. Your beer to coke ratio is all wrong.

    GMM warning

    But hey, he said it.

I'll REALLY sleep after seeing this on the BBC Sport ticker:

FIA chief Max Mosley says talks with the teams were "constructive" and will resume on Saturday

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 18:20

FOTA fight was more than just the budgets - it was more personal, more political and more bitter - it is the entire governance of the sport. Max took it upon himself to change rules with no consultation. FOTA had to make a stand otherwise it was a one-way ticket. If Max is relieved of position - which is clearly FOTA's ultimate objective they may well consider options to help smaller teams fill the grid places. The Budgets Caps are no more than a means to an end (preferably Max's).

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 18:20

    GMM warning

There was a clip of him saying it on BBC...

That would put the cat among the pigeons - though Max will probably not care a bit because he's dancing with the paper tigers.

I am not sure this is true - a united FOTA has the potential devalue the revenue of the entire sport. Leaving Max with only the new teams and no Monaco who is going to buy TV rights for this show? I keep saying the fight is not about budget cuts - it is governance and who gets waht back from the TV rights. If Max got away with this - he will use this saving to the teams to argue they get less revenue from TV coverage etc so FOM will get more. The teams quite rightly want more back from these. I can bet the way teams like Williams and Force India came on board (sorry about the pun) is that FOTA is attempting to extract more back from the commercial interests so they have a bigger budget to work with. This could also help any new team wanting to join F1. This is political and financial - the budget caps are the proxy for discussing bigger issues.

Entirely predictable - and it would be the way I would play it with Max as well. Max has no option but to concede something and I think in the end it will be a lot (he will be out of office by the year end in all likelihood). So if I was FOTA I would make him suffer, draw out the discussions and drum up public opinion (no Monaco none of the currents participating next year) - this is all strategy. FOTA chose the best place and time to fight Max - there will not be a speedy closure on this - I can assure you.

TV heads up #1: Red Bull Air Race has switched channel this year to ITV4. Review of 2008 at 4.30 tomorrow. Not sure when the first of this year will be on but if it follows the Channel 4 pattern it'll be weekly while they catch up with races held so far.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 18:58

    We forgive you :D

Hey Lukeh you are a sadomasochist you have denied Max his favourite extramural activity of pain being brought to bear on his backside!

  • Pat W22/05/2009 at 18:58

TV heads up #2: If you've never seen the movie Bullitt, it will be on Channel 4 at 10.50pm tomorrow. If you have seen it I assume you went straight out and bought the DVD.

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 18:58

    you have a better chance than litespeed {Comment #761}

That is true. Even if I like Mike Gascoyne as a chief designer, I think this is an impossible task for him and the team.

TV heads up #1: Red Bull Air Race has switched channel this year to ITV4.

Oh dear, that's a bit like the board saying they have complete faith in their chairman

  • Dan Brunell22/05/2009 at 18:59

Man... you leave for two hours and the whole F1 world goes to poop.

I think what Max doesn't realize is that FOTA, FOM and the tracks like Monaco have an another option.

FOM, FOTA, and the tracks can headquarter the racing series in America. This way, FOM could be both the regulatory and finacial body. AAA and the rest of the associations that threatened to breakaway from the FIA could still do so and would love to stick it to Max for everything he has done over the years.

I personally would love to see that. Payback for Indy 2005.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 19:01

I personally would love to see that. Payback for Indy 2005.

Can't see the car makers racing solely in the states when no one is buying cars at the mo

[Though a US race is a must, along with Canada]

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 19:02

Dad just said which car he looks after will change every day he's there. So one day he might be on JP1s and the next on Porsches.

He did say his neck hurt a bit after all the G-forces from all the laps in the JP1s.

  • Dan Brunell22/05/2009 at 19:03

Can’t see the car makers racing solely in the states when no one is buying cars at the mo

I am not talking about having all the racing in America. FOM could just be headquartered here with AAA's blessing. He would run and regulate the sport without the interference of a governing body.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 19:03

Yeah, maybe. Even if just to annoy the French it'd be a good idea :D

  • Scott Woodwiss22/05/2009 at 19:05

He also said he did indeed Palmer himself and that he's a very nice and kind guy.

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 19:05

Fake F1 update: Twitter won't let me have multiple accounts, so it's a no-go in my case. Seems a bit strange, since I'm sure other people have managed it.

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 19:05

For sure you would base it in North America to avoid FIA having any authority and anyway I think now is the time for the North American public to really start taking an interest. Max having manoeuvred the situation so there were no races has sort of made a drought. If I was advising FOTA this would be my line of thought - a very good point you made Dan!

Remember how Max survived spankgate getting the little countries (mostly African) on his side. He was going to use the same tactic with the little teams he propose introducing to F1 next year. I really hope this all blows up in his face.

Not to change topics, but how on earth can the EU with all their lawyers sit at the sidelines with all the deals which have gone with the FIA, FOM, Ferrari, and the lot.

If I was a team like McLaren or Renault, I would be calling Brussels asking why they are not investigating the FIA.

No - you want to get away from EU -instead of Paris France you have your association registered in say Charlotte North Carolina - you can still have the races through out the world.

No he is trying to ride on two camels at the same time (FIA-MAX and FOTA) - he does not want to lose out on any MONEY!

I think he has now jumped. Nick Craw and co have been very quiet since they announced they were thinking of setting up a breakaway from the FIA following the vote of confidence. Since then nothing. Logically they must be planning a campaign to get their guy elected in Oct/Nov. If they do the 100 year commercial rights deal will be investigated and Benie/CVC may lose the rights.

Bernie I believe decided to trigger the breakaway so that if the new championship is not the official FIA championship all previous agreements don't apply and new ones are not related to the FIA. So he can buy the rights from CVC and use the media and circuit rights as part of a new championship.

Since the FIA does not have any races it can put on regardless what Max says Bernie can surrender his 100 year deal in return for relieving the FIA of its obligations to put on F1 races over the next few years and no doubt throwing them a few quid to balance their budget.

No doubt he has a deal in place with Nick Craw covering all of this already.

    Isn't that down to CVC?

I mentioned it earlier but the way I see it everything that has happened has driven down the value of CVC's rights. We have global recession, F1 in chaos and an FIA president who has to stand for election in less than 6 months. Bernie will buy the rights from CVC at a reduced price so that they can right off the whole disaster.

He can then do the deals necessary and take a lower percentage from the new championship. In a few years he can sell what he owns to another mug at a greatly inflated price because the economy will be better, the teams will effectively own the championship so are locked in and they can't really break away from a breakaway.

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 19:32

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 19:32

They still need the races to be sanctioned by the relevant governing bodies otherwise the races would be illegal and shut-down.

A lot of those bodies wanted to breakaway frm the FIA and set up their own organisation. Besides they all like the sanctioning fee and the EU would come down on them like a ton of bricks if they refused to sanction.

  • Pat W22/05/2009 at 19:32

Yes, but all the governing bodies are members of the FIA which does a lot of the work for them, they can sanction other things, and are probably obliged to do so, but they can tie any series they take a dislike to up in a ball of red tape

This is essentially what I have been saying - you just expressed it very well and you went through to its logical conclusion and that Bernie will be the winner.

    Bernie is always the winner

The (implied) promised engine situation entry has been posted, so you should be able to figure out who's on what number of engine and what (ab)use the engines have sustained thus far.

Oh yeah, the BMW podcast. I was gonna start that sometime.

    Well, in the future maybe.

  • lou22/05/2009 at 20:45

they have an audio podcast with a photo on youtube

that's not a production for Brawn. Jenson has been doing them for over a year now, i think for five live... not sure. :D

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 20:46

the brawn bandwaggon? they don't have a video podcast.

    They don't?

No but Jenson has videos and voice recordings which is much the same.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 20:46

that's not a production for Brawn. Jenson has been doing them for over a year now, i think for five live... not sure. :D

I think they are for his site, but Rubens did one as well and brawn if i recall right

  • lou22/05/2009 at 20:46

here is the actual podcast. i'll give it a listen after the five live show.

His site has been recently re-designed - much improved as the original was dddduuuuuulllllll

  • lou22/05/2009 at 20:48

I think they are for his site, but Rubens did one as well and brawn if i recall right

they are put up on his site, but he advertises jensonbutton.com in them, so i think they are for five live or someone too (i think i've heard them use it anyways). Rubens did one because i think many people were asking for him to do one..

oooooo jenson and rubens on five live in a second! yay!

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 20:48

When will Timo get on the video podcasting bandwagon?

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 20:49

So you are now stalking the Icelandic girl who sang in Eurovision and should have won it (IMHO)!

  • Lukeh22/05/2009 at 20:52

I'm just saying', but Sidepodcast HQ may have a new voicemail...

not that it's me, but sources have informed me there is a new voicemail is all...

    i (heart) rubens.

but i still want jenson to win monaco... :P

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 20:54

So, anyone know if there are two twitter clients that can run at the same time with different accounts?

If one were interested in such a thing

  • Rich22/05/2009 at 20:54

    You like her? Stay back...

Yes I do and she should have won! We seem to stalk the same people at the same time!

  • Dan Brunell22/05/2009 at 20:54

So if Sidepodcast does start a breakaway series Formula (whatever.) How will it be different from Formula Juan.. Won... I mean One?

For me, I want racing like in the good old days of the 1910's where the driver had to drive along side a mechanic and only they were allowed to fix the car, fuel, and change the tires.

  • RG22/05/2009 at 20:55

Yes I do and she should have won! We seem to stalk the same people at the same time!

Now the geographic locations help me here. Plus I know here next concert, so mwahahaha.

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 20:55

another pre-requisite would be that the driver has to race in a standing position

  • Bassano Clapper22/05/2009 at 20:56

    Support series of Formula won-ton

Which is a step up from Formula Tom Yum.

That would be telling know wouldn't it :)

Well if Eurovision ever went Worldvision Song Contest we will win. We might go around killing people and hijacking cars but we also know how to compose and sing.

  • lou22/05/2009 at 20:57

Hehe, Jenson is staying optimistic but not getting ahead of himself :)

Jenson is always optimistic, well to the press anyways :)

  • Nick22/05/2009 at 20:58

But you have to get the people in the other countries to vote for you!

Dad just got back from his assessment and I’m pleased to announce he is now a fully fledged instructor for Palmer Sport!

Scott, congrats man, but unfortunately you picked the worst possible moment to announce it - everyone here is talking about the fact that nothing has happened in the FOTA meeting.

I went away for a couple of hours to watch a movie and there's 300 comments!

Great pic, but had to read caption twice as I was sitting here thinking "why were Ferrari discussing the 2010 regulations back in 2005."

Also, the caption for yesterday's picture needs to be amended as Frre Practice isn't on a Friday.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 22:47

Haven't you heard, F1 is environmentally considerate these days. Did you not see the stripes on the tyres?

The main reason is no-one ever bothered with the greens and all racing drivers at any level have always been told to ignore the green and watch the red and go when the red goes out.

  • Pat W22/05/2009 at 22:47

Random question... was there any reason they changed f1 starting lights from going green to just going out?

There was sometimes a slight gap between the reds going out and the greens coming on, milliseconds. And sometimes the green light bulb failed.

Drivers were watching the reds anyway so they just used that.

  • Steven Roy22/05/2009 at 22:48

I wish I was on the panel when you guys did the Top Gear impersonations, would've loved to do that :P

Random question... was there any reason they changed f1 starting lights from going green to just going out?

There was sometimes a slight gap between the reds going out and the greens coming on, milliseconds. And sometimes the green light bulb failed. Drivers were watching the reds anyway so they just used that.

Wasn't the green light abandoned because of some start light controversy?

  • lou22/05/2009 at 22:58

    Who did that?

well usually there is only one person to blame...

nope, but it's on me list. yourself?

I'm liking it so far - particularly the ability to drag videos into the sidebar and watch while reading the main part of the window. I think this could work quite well for the live shows.

atm they are only following me and lukeh.. is the person who did it a brawn fan?

The only thing I can think is that the five red light system was brought in to let drivers know when the start was going to be after some incident.

Before that there were two reds and two greens with something like 4 - 7 seconds between them THe drivers at the front got no warning when the reds would come on. So there were incidents where drivers struggled to get a gear before the start because even if they were paying attention they may only get four seconds before the green

I think Mallya's boat is bigger. Indian Empress 312 ft (95m)...

It is that much bigger it cost 58 million pounds and Flab's a mere 32 million. The Indian Empress is also much more beautiful.

Wrong. In terms of logic, fake sidepodcast (anitmatter) and sidepodcast (matter) would destroy each other and suck the rest in the sidepodcast universe into a black and white checked hole to be (hopefully) spat out into a parallel but oppositte universe know as the GMM Universe.
