It's Free Practice day in Monaco today, and it's confusing me greatly, because I am not supposed to like Thursdays. Nevertheless, the action gets underway, and thank goodness for that! Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Red Bull have confirmed they will be running a new diffuser in Monaco, meaning that Adrian Newey has either been downing buckets of the energy drink, or he overstated things when he said it was going to be really tough to get on the car. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what effect it has on them.
  • Button has offered an insight into the differences between being at the front of the pack and the back, saying that now he's winning, it's all he thinks about and he's worried his girlfriend finds him boring. He says that when you're at the back, you want to get away from it all and do something interesting. I would have thought it was the other way round, so this fascinates me.
  • Jake Humphrey has given us some snippets of what's going to happen at the beginning of the Monaco coverage in his latest blog entry. He also says that waiting for Monaco is like waiting for Christmas Day for him.

That's all for now. Don't forget live commenting today, and pay attention so you can alter your Fantasy Racers teams tomorrow. I'll see you in the comments (in whichever thread we happen to be on at the time).

When I read that I did feel the same thing. I would call this MOTIVATION…

In fact, I´m fascinated by Jenson himself. He is a real nice guy, as I have never seen at F1.

If he wins this championship, would be something good to F1 in general. I can’t remember the last nice guy whom won a championship…

    mika?

although i say that as a man with no actual memory of my own, and am judging him solely on that 2007 advert with lewis/alonso. any further back, has long gone.

:D I'd say Mika too, or Damon. Definitely not Schumacher.

  • Nick20/05/2009 at 23:48

    mika?

I's say he was probably the nicest, although he wasn't the sort of guy who would strike you as being especially friendly like Jenson. Damon was similar, ive met him and he was relatively friendly

  • Andy Taylor20/05/2009 at 23:53

    Definitely not Schumacher.

BTW, do I have to justify this?

A road car design I helped out with for someone doing an automotive design course is being built!

    8O

Personally - there is no way in hell you would get me in it. ;)

  • Nick21/05/2009 at 00:30

Well done! Thats great, are there any renderings of it?

  • Flibster21/05/2009 at 00:51

Well done! Thats great, are there any renderings of it?

The design was done 10 years ago - it was mainly done on paper. :D

The design brief was a modern take on a classic sports car. Most people did 911's or 356's or e-types... This was a based on the Morgan 3 wheeler. *less wheels = less complicated ;) *

Carbon fibre moncoque and panels, big sticky wheels all round, - prop shaft/chain driving the rear wheel - engine from a Yamaha R1 on the front, full f1 style suspension - reasonably simple. Estimated weight of about 350-400kg and power around 165bhp.

Only one is being made by Ben *chap I helped out* as a track toy - not exactly as designed - carbon fibre monocoque is being replaced with aluminium skinned paper honeycomb which will be glued and rivited- Lotus Elise style. Panels will be fibre glass instead of carbon as well. Engine has been changed to a Hayabusa engine at 200bhp....

    I ain't getting in it!

Will be interesting to see it.

So - what's in store for us today, boys and girls? :)

  • Amy21/05/2009 at 06:06

ok, I am loving the blast-from-the-past of the 1999 Racing Line issues, from having a quick flick through two of them I have already seen 18 year old Jenson, 13 year old Lewis and 'up and coming' West F3000 star, 22 year old Nick Heidfeld.

The size of these magazines makes the 2009 issues appear painfully flimsy though.

  • Paul (oz)21/05/2009 at 06:06

Hmmm. Williams on top of the timesheets?

  • Journeyer21/05/2009 at 06:11

ok, I am loving the blast-from-the-past of the 1999 Racing Line issues, from having a quick flick through two of them I have already seen...

    18 year old Jenson

Wasn't he the McLaren BRDC Driver of the Year in 1998? I guess that's why he was featured... And look, he's driving a Merc-powered car again - just not a McLaren.

    13 year old Lewis

Already?! The kid was barely out of karting by then...

and ‘up and coming’ West F3000 star, 22 year old Nick Heidfeld

Poor Nick - he would've gotten Mika's seat in 2002 had Kimi not been his teammate...

  • Journeyer21/05/2009 at 06:12

How about a statement from LDM?

yep thats why hes in it

Already?! The kid was barely out of karting by then...

from having a flick through a few more (my issues range from 1999 to 2004) Lewis is featured almost every month with an update about how he is doing. It really reinforces just how much they groomed him to get where he is now!

I really think that was a bad move by Ron. I know he's helped Lewis' career by leaps and bounds, but some of the stuff he let happen were either unneccessary or slightly harmful in the long run.

It's my first election...so i want to make it count....aaah, who to vote for :(

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2009 at 11:30

    Button has offered an insight into the differences between being at the front of the pack and the back, saying that now he’s winning, it’s all he thinks about and he’s worried his girlfriend finds him boring. He says that when you’re at the back, you want to get away from it all and do something interesting. I would have thought it was the other way round, so this fascinates me. {Original entry}

The short version: Losing hurts, especially when you want to be a winner, so the mind instinctively looks for stuff to think about that doesn't hurt in that situation. A girlfriend fits the bill nicely.

Winning causes lots of happiness, causing winners to dwell on victory and perhaps neglecting less exciting stuff. It takes a good girlfriend - or a patient one - to get through such a scenario when the winner is thus distracted for a long time.

They do produce a lot of methane but what is the plan. Capture the methane and burn it. You will get a lot of carbon dioxide which is still a greenhouse gas but in effect you get the same level of greenhouse effect plus energy. Just need to find a way to capture it and feed it into a power station

Kubica blew his car up with a bang, Vettel did his with a wheeeee

  • Steven Roy21/05/2009 at 14:59

:D Good thing I disposed of him the moment his price went up ever so slightly. Kubica's 2009 is looking a lot like Capelli's 1992...

Awww. :( Well, BMW have been awesome since they started. That had to end sooner or later. I think they're very close to the point of giving up on 2009 and focusing on 2010. I'm not sure Kubica will be with them by then, though.

True. Wonder who would be with them then.

  • Steven Roy21/05/2009 at 15:11

Have a seat while we discuss this. You don't have any sharp objects in your possession. Have you heard the story of the man who told his wife on the phone that her cat had died and she told him that he should have broken it gently to her by telling her that he was on the roof first and they were trying to get him down and he fell and was injured and then eventually that he died.

Well in that case Heidfeld's season is on the roof.

  • RG21/05/2009 at 15:11

especially since they gave up 2008 to focus on 2009!

Don't think my McLaren supporting friend hasn't reminded me of that this year.

  • Journeyer21/05/2009 at 15:17

Glock or Klien maybe? They have/had contracts with BMW

Glock is Toyota's future - they won't let go of him. Klien isn't good enough to lead BMW's charge.

It would be immense to just drop stuff into the game and whatnot but you have to make everything from shapes and whatnot, otherwise i'd simply transfer it into the game. Partially why I enjoy doing it though, just the creative side of me that loves the challenge of it

Couldnt find out anything about the black helmet other than this about rubens 2 years ago

Q: In Monaco in 2007, Barrichello tried out a new helmet design but ended up regretting the decision? Why?

    JB: No idea!

Incorrect - Rubens tried out a new helmet during qualifying. A special coating covered the helmet. Although black in colour, it was meant to reveal his usual livery as the temperature rose. But conditions were cool and it stayed black throughout almost the whole session.

  • me21/05/2009 at 17:04

that's just the one he uses for the bike they take to the circuits. see he's had it for at least a year i think..

    ahh, got ya.

  • Amy21/05/2009 at 17:04

You suggest that Heikki and Kimi are going out with each other?

noooooo, I'm just sorting through my 'pictures of Finns' folder, and was looking for any possible excuse to post some :D

'Oil is streaming from the car like a classic shakespeare text streaming from the early ages and the slipping of the glistening of the oil is distracting yet more cars as they plough on in the murderously tricky course'

If he is riding the bike within the race complex, it needs to be FIA compliant. Don't ask me where I read it though, it was a while ago when my brain had had enough caffine...

bike helmets don't need to be, and there are lots of pictures of drivers riding around on scooters without helmets

  • lou21/05/2009 at 17:08

Surely it would need to be FIM compliant not FIA?

yup lol, bike helmets dont need to be fireproof....or have HANS clips :D

Oh gord... I'm going to have to find an old laptop and find the link to the doc. now aren't I? (I think if was via ITVf1 but could have been elsewhere.)

  • Jon Waldock21/05/2009 at 17:13

Although I supose it could also have been another race series altogether, lol, given that brain is not working....

I'd be surprised if they did, but you may be right.

However, for car racing helmets need to be FIA approved (or MSA depending on the series) which means fireproof lining. Bike racing helmets need to be FIM (or similar) approved, which dont have a fireproof lining or hans clips.

    The latter is alot cheaper...generally

and shame to waste a perfectly good helmet, drivers get through alot of those things

Nearly, they have been collecting the VAT wanted it to be refunded as they argued they were not a crisp. the court said exhibit A is a crisp so they dont get the money.

And people say f1 is full of pointless legal suits

He was talking about Hamilton and how he had joined F1 a bit different.

He started in a fast car and now is in a slow car Davidson said. The normal thing apparently is starting in a slow car and then finishing your career in a fast car. He proved his theory by pointing out Jenson Button etc. He also mentioned himself. But he forgot he never actually got past being in a slow car.

Just going back to the Ferrari-FIA court thing (sorry), I see this as the FIA saying "No, we're not biased to Ferrari any more. These are the rules and if they don't want to play ball, tough." It's typical Ferrari - when things don't go the way they want them, they go off on one.

No migration assistant on old machine

You need to boot the old Mac from the new Mac's install disc. That has Migration Assistant on it.

Plus, he's trying to transfer apps, is that possible?

    Yes.

  • Jon Waldock21/05/2009 at 20:52

Perhaps it does, but when you come to buy a new machine, will you be able to migrate your documents, photos and music to the new machine as well as all the applications without having to reinstall them?

    Thought not.

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts125/news/landing.html

For anyone interested the ground tracks for the shuttle landing can be found here. Looks like the normal approach over the top of Mexico / Texas into the HAC(Heading Alignment Circle) where they do figures of 8 to drop the altitude.

  • Bassano Clapper21/05/2009 at 20:57

should be able too, the only problem can be going backwards, i.e vista to xp, but xp to vista has been great

XP to Vista on the same machine is easy. I'm talking about from one machine to another with no specialist knowledge. It's one of the things that I really like about Macs. Then there's Archive and Install - reinstall the OS without affecting your settings, applications and data.

  • Bassano Clapper21/05/2009 at 21:00

Dave's still struggling, new disks no workie ;(

  • Bassano Clapper21/05/2009 at 21:02

It came up earlier, can you ask Joe if he's aware of the Fake F1 phenomenon on twitter and what the paddock think of it

  • Steven Roy21/05/2009 at 21:03

Weather forecast is currently "no go" for landing tomorrow due a chance of broken cloud at 4000ft and predicted thunderstorms within 30 miles of the landing site. At least Christine will be happy.

    Everybody with Lurch on their FR team should be… {Comment #127}

My LCM Barato team will not be happy then...

Speaking of FR teams, there's no FR thread so I'll write about it here.

LCM Dragons had a major shake-up. The Brawn team and Nakajima are still in, but Sutil and Glock were changed for the McLaren team. There is absolutely no change, for the first time for any of my teams since the game started.

LCM Fire Lizard was somewhat more stable, with Trulli being exchanged for Kovalainen. The Force India duo, Button and Hamilton remain as before (and as usual for that team). There is $0.8m change.

The other three teams were swapped about a week last Sunday, to be in the following states:

    LCM Barato: Sutil/Fisichella/Nakajima/Piquet Jr/Heidfeld/Kubica/Bourdais ($1.5m change)

    LCM Caro: Hamilton/Vettel ($8.8m change)

    LCM Aléman: Sutil/Heidfeld/Rosberg/Vettel/Glock ($5.3m change)

    Selection statistics:

    3 - Sutil

2 - Button, Nakajima, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Vettel

1 - Barrichello, Piquet Jr, Kubica, Bourdais, Rosberg, Glock

I know. I wasn't sure if I dare listen after the slideshow debacle, but I'm glad I did.

He'll get lots of praise for this, then next week, we'll get...

"Wading back and forth, Flavio hosts the leaders.... tarmac streets beam out Monaco heritage.... amrco everything, shiny and gleamy..."

  • lou21/05/2009 at 22:00

    It's.... acrually listenable. huh.

my thoughts on James Allen's audio thing

    - he seems much more calm and collected than he did on TV, but at the same time at the beginning he does almost sound a little upset or maybe even too calm, but it's something he will i'm sure get better at.

    - he needs to sort out the audio a little but as a first attempt it's great!

    - i'm actually looking forward to the next one i think, if there is a next one.

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2009 at 22:06

    OOOH!! i’ve just realised where Jens got the helmet from!! the reason it has HANS clips and everything is because he used it during the off season testing before the 2007 season, when honda had that lovely black testing livery. will find a pic in a sec. {Comment #245}

Now that's recycling for you ;)

He does have a lot of very interesting insights, its just a shame it didnt come across when he was commentating. but i think that was more down to ITV's desire to take the show in that direction, which is a shame for him. who knows a couple of years off and he could come back as a great commentator. Although he will have a lot to prove to overcome how bad he was before

  • Nick21/05/2009 at 22:11

I know its GMM, but Frank Williams quote, look at the end of the article, i think they missed a t

Legard is no better. Crofty on the other hand... well, the BBC need to swap them over or something!

Apparently Brundle refused to work with Croft for some unknown reason.

Also from that thread, Ben Edwards was apparently one of the first choices, but he didnt want to sign an exclusive contract, so it didn't go any further

Haven't read the thread in ages but back in Feb or so, they were saying Ben Edwards was a back-up in London for a lot of ITV races, in case they lost the link..

    Jimmy Perry - David Croft

Writers/Producers of Dads Army, Hi De Hi, and other BBC sit-coms of the 1970s and 80s

  • Dave in NZL21/05/2009 at 22:39

Evening all - is there a sensible place to download an audio recording of the official interviews? I know I can get the text at Formula1.com, and coupled with spreeder.com it doesn't take too long, but can I DL the audio anywhere?

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Nick21/05/2009 at 22:44

Are you going to race it?

  • Pat W21/05/2009 at 22:55

Just started using Tweetdeck - looks good but a little tricky to use?

Works well for me. You just have to adjust the update periods in the settings and away you go. I use three columns (friends, replies, direct) but with the window dragged smaller to only show the first.

I still have very serious crashing problems with it even after I updated the other night when pat recommended redownloading it :(

  • Nick21/05/2009 at 22:56

Is there anyway to minimise it to the tray like skype?

  • Pat W21/05/2009 at 22:58

Depends what version you are running. The one Lukeh downloaded can't do it because they thought that was what caused the crashing. I never "upgraded" to that one so I still have the functionality of just clicking minimize...

\i only downloaded it the morning... so i guess i will keep closing it in a vain attempt to keep my desktop tidy

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 10:33

    I’d quite like to graduate again just because I loved the funny gown and hat. {Comment #293}

I have to say my graduation was pretty awful. Too many crowds, too much noise (even earplugs didn't help much), too much pointless queueing and too much getting poked. Basically it ended up so bad that I went into sensory overload and didn't technically graduate until about six weeks later.

If there's a next time, I'm having my degree posted and maybe hiring the gown and hat for photo opportunities.

  • Alianora La Canta22/05/2009 at 11:06

    Indeed! Noise can exhaust you? How?! {Comment #348}

Stress. Too much noise for too long causes stress and the physiological symptoms thereof. An increase in sweating and other chemical reactions, if sufficiently extreme and prolonged, can be exhausting. Most living beings get out of the area and/or protect their ears long before that happens, but if the animals were penned in, they wouldn't have had that option.

Rehydration also helps, which makes me wonder whether the farmer remembered to provide enough water for a stressed herd.
