Hello everyone.
Apologies for the late Daily, I was trying to sort out a card and some presents for my sister but neither Moonpig nor Amazon wanted to accept my order straight away, I had set up accounts and verify addresses and all sorts. The complication being that she's in Spain and it has to get there for Tuesday, so I couldn't drop it and do it tonight because I kinda put it off over and over again already. Anyway, done now, even if it might get there late..
So... who's ready for some open-wheel racing? I am! Formula 1 is back. IndyCar is back.. and we probably won't be able to see it. But Formula 1 is back!!
Some people definitely ready for F1 are Australians and people in Australia who aren't Australian. If that's you, and you're in Melbourne on Friday morning, you really should meet up with fellow Sidepodders for the Annual Sidepodbreakfast!
Venue: 2 Doors Down, Fitzroy St, St Kilda
Time: 10.30am Friday
Amy met Pamela there for the first time a year ago, since then they've each explored Europe and both went to the Belgian GP with the Euro contingent. Come along tomorrow and see where it takes you!
Competitions
With the season upon us this weekend (hallelujah!) it is time to think about the competitions we want to play. The following suggestions came up during a discussion yesterday:
- The SofaF1 Pole Poll is run by our very own Giggles. There shouldn't be any excuse for missing this one, it is dead easy: make your choices for pole and the top 10 finishing positions for Australia, and do the same for the whole year. Look there's even a draggy-droppy thing to help!
- The Fantasy Racers Sidepodleague is back and Steven has written about the details you need to join up.
- ManipeF1 has a management game I've been looking at joining. It is run in the classic style, you have a pot of €85m to buy a chassis, and engine and two drivers.
- My own TMR Game has been running for a little while but you are still free to join! Just choose your top F1, IndyCar and NASCAR picks for this weekend. As a special introductory offer, new players who join this week or next week will be given 80% of the lowest amount scored each week for every week they've missed from the start of the year. A bit of help to catch-up before the meat of the season, enough of a penalty that you'll need to play well. But next week is the last chance to take the offer!
Reading
While you're thinking about your teams, have a read of these fine items.
Leigh has the definitive coverage of the Lotus v Lotus argument court case which is well worth a look, as well as an explanation of the new rules from Mickey Schu.
Some good news from Jonny Noble of Autosport about the F1 track runs:
Some great news about track running this year. UBS is donating $50 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every track lap run in 2011
The UBS charity donation means that everyone in the paddock can raise at least $950 this year. Absolutely no excuse for anyone not doing it.
Wondering where Christian Klien landed after not getting the apparently much sought-after HRT drive that went to Liuzzi? He's gone back to sportscars, but not Peugeot - he's joined the promising Aston Martin project run by Prodrive. They have a new car this year which whilst not looking or sounding anything like as awesome as the coupe, should be a bit faster and more level with Audi and Peugeot. Is he the man to sort out that car? Probably not, but I'm glad he has a drive somewhere.
Races This Weekend
F1 and IndyCar not enough? How about some Kimi action in Rally Portugal? GT1 at Abu Dhabi? Bikes at Donington? Two NASCAR races? There's tonnes going on!
- Formula 1, Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne. (with V8 Supercar)
- IndyCar Series, Grand Prix of St Pete, St Petersburg, Florida. (with Indy Lights)
- WRC, Rally Portugal.
- GT1, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
- NASCAR, California Speedway, Fontana. (Cup and Nationwide)
- World Superbike, Donington Park.
Don't forget when you are planning your race-watching across timezones, the clocks change across Europe on Sunday morning as we add an hour.
To prepare for the F1 action you are going to need some Race Information, now featuring the fantastic addition of the two tyre compounds in use this weekend. Pirelli have provided a nice little page explaining their F1 tyre range. If you're still confused just remember the song!
Enjoy your Thursday and don't forget tonight, 1am GMT for Free Practice 1!
why the other hashtag are they trying to kill me
How does twitter work again?
So far it's Amy, Paul and I for breakfast tomorrow. All welcome :)
Ha! anythIng Amy can tweet, I can tweet 8 minutes later
#sneaky
What happened there?? Bizarre. Unless there's 4 tours they're giving away?
Tweet them to ask what happened?
Hmmm. Looks like you've been had. Better voice out while you still have a chance...
One more in line before you. If he doesn't reply, you're next up. ;)
AMYYYYY! Are you around?
didnt get the tour turns out saying first two to tweet will win is a lie :(
BOOO whoever said that
Oh. COME. On! The original tweet is still there too:
http://twitter.com/ausgrandprix/status/50742393896583168
Mass RT?
one of the people they invited tweeted the first hashtag after me and one didnt even tweet it at all. absolute ****
i got so excited and now im crushed :(
Tweet a complaint and we will all retweet.
sidepodmutiny on my behalf?
Exactly
i dont want to tweet them again because i have already had my go at them. can someone just tweet them and say i definitely looked second heheh?
I just did that
https://twitter.com/stevenroy27/status/50761701372596224
I am actually creating a Twitter account for you, Amy. *shock*
:D
Journeyer
Retweet the tweet I sent them
Done.
Just sad this is happening when the UK is asleep. Is Mr C still up?
Shame there are not more people awake to cause real trouble
Looks like we'll have to do this throughout today and hope we can get Amy something for Friday.
you guys are the best. i may or may not have had a wee cry haha.
I think we should just spam them. They don't want to upset Amy.
It is blatantly unfair. And stupid of them when twitter search proves who tweeted when.
Very very stupid indeed.
Steven, I tweeted Lotus as well just in case they're more help. ;)
i wouldnt have been so upset if it was any other team but it was MY team. im seriously the only visible fan they have here! lets complain to lotus too ;)
beat ya to it. :D
Tweeted Gascoyne too.
Tweeted the C's so they see when they wake up.
<3 now i have calmed down i am off to enjoy the rest of my day at the track. wont stay too much later as big night tonight :D
Tony Fernandes is in Manilla or I would tweet him too
He's here?? Where is he here?
I wish I could stay up all night pestering people for you but I have to sleep.
Enjoy your day
Night all
He is meeting the president
https://twitter.com/tonyfernandes
Interesting. Pushing for an open skies policy, I reckon.
I guess.
Anyway I must sleep
See ya folks.
For those just coming into the comments this morning: please, PLEASE help Amy. She unfairly lost out on a Lotus pit tour from @ausgrandprix.
http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50742393896583168
Amy tweeted second there, only for them to come up with a new hashtag. Amy got beat the second time, but she should've won the first time!
Spread the word and help Amy get what she deserves.
joe said tony will be here on friday
indeed. getting more annoyed with ausgrandprix now, using Tweetdeck as an excuse. tsk tsk. have duly replied to him.
their excuse is a cop out. its not that they didnt see my tweet its that they changed their mind about which hashtag to use after they already said which WOULD win
they DMed you? Why on earth did they change their mind? Ask them in public so we can RT and join in the fun.
no dm, i meant their we use tweet deck excuse.
at least im pretty sure ill make it to the stage for autographs. lots of ferrari fans in front of me and staff alway make them move fast. strictly one item only!
ahhh, yes. which is why i replied to them with the tweet (also from tweetdeck) with the original hashtag. knowing his gaffe, he hasn't replied since. we need reinforcements from the rest of the gang - time to name and shame...
hoping your luck there is better... but who knows? maybe we'll get you something cool tomorrow. ;)
im living vicariously through pamela. im pleased her tour looks awesome.
sauber on stage now, lots of fans! lots of japanese and mexicans here i think
Waiting for mclaren, no one seems to know where to go!
think i just scared tom from lotus by knowing his name :D
erm... who's tom? :D
their media guy I believe
ahh! is that enough to get you a tour, then? :D
hey wolf. how are you? we've been helping amy out since this morning.
me in the meetings the whole day, hoping tomorrow will be better and some window of opportunity for FP1 and FP2 will open up :-)
Awesome mclaren tour
Martin smiled and I met jensons engineer
Who Jenson's engineer now? Hasn't that been a revolving door for some time?
Omg! I just had the most amazing Lotus garage tour. We were let loose in the paddock afterwards. Brilliant. Fantastic 2 hours!
That's great! :)
Feel even more awful for Amy now, though. :(
I know it sux :(
I got the tour through the Spark magazine subscription thing. Lotus said they are doing these in Malaysia too.
Some fellow called Dave?
I have a hopeless memory
We MUST get Amy in. If not here, than maybe in Malaysia.
Hey! When you get home tonight, maybe you should help us RT the message Steven and I tweeted earlier?
Mclaren back with a very simple, and flat exhaust
So they got rid of the new exhaust they were running in testing? That's not a good sign, is it?
Mclaren dude said the trick exhaust was taking them 300 hours to make and they were burning through them in 10 laps!
i wonder how much speed they'll lose by going back to the original exhaust?
Yup, not sure if they will try it again. They are trying a different rear now
Sure but I have like 3 followers. Haha.
Amy even let me give her a hug after the disaster today.
On the upside, Amy saw Heikki :)
But I think aus gp need to rectify what happened today by giving her a tour tmrw!
Def.
Hahaha! Strength in numbers. I'm hoping Mr and Mrs C help us later as well. Name and shame and all that.
AWWW! :)
By the way, mclaren had their diffuser hidden away, so they must have something going on
The GP organizers won't notice the screw-up their social media specialist made until we make enough noise. So a lot of RTing and tweeting their account is needed. Name and shame.
Then again, who doesn't hide their diffuser?
What happened?
Reposted previous comment for you.
True but it wasn't even in the pit. I did see the floor though
i am going to call off the sidepodmutiny because im over it now. i got to say a few words to heikki and that was enough. thanks for all looking out for me though <3
awww! :) we'll name and shame anyway. who knows what it'll get you? :D
Thats terrible!
Terrible, unfair, all the negative adjectives I could think of.
Steven and I were watching it unfold before our very eyes. It was horrible. Ergo the name and shame. :D Check out stevenroy27 and tifosijourneyer on Twitter for details.
Mutiny!!!!
Mutiny!!!!*quietly puts giant signs down and slopes off towards coffee machine*
You're on twitter now?
Yes. Amy needed help that badly. Because it was that horrible. I'll use it in case of emergencies (such as this one). :)
Which is why an RT would be appreciated. ;)
Wow... Journeyer on twitter!
I wonder what we can do beyond twitter?
done
even with the second hashtag they offered a spot to somene who tweeted it after me bt they turned it down as they werent at the track
I have retweeted - that's disgusting behaviour from AusGP!
checking out that tweet about who was first and second but I must say I am confused, not really sure what is going on. I see Amy being second but with a typo in the hashtag ... or did I miss something ?
I have tweeted them, might be best to swamp them with diffewrent tweets rather than just the same one? In tweetdeck you cant really tell how many RT's a tweet have
Dunno, but I have retweeted and also sent them a tweet.
their first hashtag was #iloveausgp. they then switched to #ausgptour, as if the first hashtag never happened. :O
I said to them they should have used the twitter website instead as that was fairer.
#ILoveAusGP vs #iloveausgp
good idea. i did that myself. best to do an RT and make one of your own.
Why have they got two hashtags?
Ok, that I did not see anywhere. that is not nice at all ...
Hashtags arent case sensitive, neither is twitter search
It shouldnt make any difference
Indeed.
First hashtag: http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50742393896583168
Second hashtag: http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50750141862391808
Right. But their excuse was "We use Tweetdeck" - which is unfair as most people would check the twitter website hashtag search first, right?
what tweetdeck has to do with them changing the hashtag is not entirely clear to my sleepy brain ...
As Amy said earlier, it's a cop-out. I reckon Amy would still be second even if they used Tweetdeck to check the first hashtag.
has anyone taken a screen shot of the first competition tweet in case they delete it later?
it is not jury trial :-)
hehe
i'm guessing it's related to the second hashtag. again, they're treating it as if the first hashtag never happened. which is weird because the original tweet is still there.
Beyond that, im pretty sure its against the law to run competitions like that. there are quite strict rules i remember. In Queensland anyway
Hehehe! And in any case, there were people who retweeted it. And they can't delete ALL the tweets with the first hashtag...
I have retweeted Steven. Also some ppl who were offered the tour weren't even there so they just clogged up twitter :(
I was wondering that, actually. If there was a trade & industry representative there, they wouldn't have let that happen.
anyway, I am wondering why would so many people who came to the GP spend time staring at the screens of their phones and tweeting instead of enjoying the being there ...
You weren't at SidepodSpa were you? ;)
no :-)
thats why after the first hashtag i put my phone away because i thought it was done and dusted, thats why i missed the second one.
I am home! Time to relax for an hour then off to Eddie Vedder. Thank God for the semi-sleep in tomorrow because I already feel kind of dead.
Oooh, James Allen has got UBS to make some strategy posts! http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/03/f1-strategy-to-be-decisive-this-year/
I think you should prepare for an appearance on TodayTonight or ACA!
So sorry for you Amy - really unfair that they did that :(
Media watch on the ABC!
I was so upset, I don't win things lots of times and I don't mind, but I thought I had won so to not get the prize bought on the tears. But now I feel much better, getting to get my things autographed by Heikki was lovely and then I asked Tom if the new merchandise would be in Malaysia because I want the new hat :)
Well every cloud has a silver lining. Glad you got to meet Heikki!
I told him I liked his new hat. Because I really like his new hat!
does he run their twitter account, by any chance? :D
They didn't offer a spot to @nayby69 or @woyung and they were the other two top 3 of the first hashtag so that's definitely it - they ignored that one complely even after saying 'will win' the key word being WILL :D
the worst thing at the track this year though, bar none, is the lack of Nandos. I look forward to eating Nandos 4 days in a row and this year its not there :(
One Nando is in Ferrari garage :-)
:D
James Allen has a nice uplifting preview post: http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/03/upbeat-mood-in-melbourne-paddock-despite-the-gloomy-weather/
I LOVE Nick's tweet. WOW. :D
Yeah great stuff man!
oh no thunderrrr. i want the rain to stop, don't make me go back out in it again ( in 45 minutes according to trip planner, boo)
wow!
He's right too - this is similar to what got the BBC into trouble...
Amy... I know you've got a lot on your plate right now but can you sort the weather out over there?
The Australian Grand Prix is supposed to be fun in the sun :)
(Actually the end of the race is going to be scarily dark if the weather doesn't get better!)
tomorrow its meant to be showers clearing at dawn, oh please please please clear at dawn the rain is so depressing!
I know!
I know :(
hmm so if Eddie takes the stage at 9 and plays 25-30 songs like he has on his other tour dates, I won't be home for a long time.
I wish I had some Ugg boots, my feet hurt. They'd be comfy, warm, and marginally acceptable to wear outside :)
you hear thunder, but there's no rain? ;)
a wise woman once said thunder only happens when its raining :D
I think its stopped. I hope.
Jean likes us
http://www.theage.com.au/sport/motorsport/fia-boss-todt-gives-melbourne-race-the-thumbs-up-20110323-1c6qv.html
The Frenchman says that Melbourne has a contract for the race for several years to come and he can't see what the fuss is all about.
Phew, I am home too. My feet are killing me
I got totally soaked for a time today. And it was cold
First time I've ever spent any time in the Advantage Bar, solely because at least it was indoors!
I didn't even think of that!
We did, however, get to see the XXXX dancers dancing out of time with each other in very short shorts
oh dear.
You really have to laugh
sometimes you wonder what sort of crowd they really appeal to, and then you remember the drunkard you got stuck with on your tour. Bet he loves the XXXX angels :D
HAHAHA! :D
Yup. There seemed to be plenty of drunk types around
right I am off to see Eddie, when I get home i might restore my phone to the factory settings because I'm pretty sure something I have installed is draining the battery too fast. Hence all the comments from alistair today :)
Bye comments!
enjoy, amy!
I can't listen to the song on my iPhone :-(
If I listen to AC/DC, do you think it will go away?
morning
Pizza dinner mmmmmmm
Enjoy Amy. Can't wait to see Eddie tomorrow.
*kicks self for buying tix for only one show*
See you at a more reasonable hour tomorrow morning :)

Liuzzi thinks the HRT can score points: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90114
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
...when half the field get taken out in a first corner crash..!
Minardi scored in Oz, only 6 cars finished the race 3 years ago, so anything is possible, but first they need to get the car moving :-)
Because that would never happen... oh ;)
Karthikeyan thinks they may not even qualify! http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90116
Have we ever had a press release so different between two drivers of the same team?
oops i haven't had dinner #sohungry
Not since the troubles at Jordan in 1999
Hmm, for those of you with PLUS subscriptions, does this article look familiar? http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3362/the-australian-gp-preview/
Morning all.
morning stuart
Hey Stuart :)
Just finished transcribing a Vettel Q&A, and (no doubt to much mirth hereabouts) about to extract a news story from it.
We're just having a giggle about NewsNow click winners
But is it NEWs or old stuff we have all heard before Stuart?....
Oh dear,
Decca will be releasing the Royal wedding several hours after the ceremony
The news is there is no news.
What's that about?
I actually like the summary articles that go along with the Q&A's as I don't like reading the entire thing unless there is something where I want to see the context of it too.
I think the mirth here is because when a press release is issued, more than one article is made out of it?
At least you know that there will be some tomorrow....
Something coming up about Ross Brawn where the headline will be a classic NN click winner without the story actually being as good.
See also a certain F1 blog that's never mentioned here.
ARE YOU EXCITED? I AM!!!
Yes I am...
Kimi is rallying today in Portugal....
Hehe I love rallying too ;)
Well, quite. Thing with the internet, as you know, is that people expect a constant supply of news, so even if there's nothing then some poor sap has to keep filling the pipe.
Ken Block not so much
I'm sure lots of previews have a satellite map and blue weather indicators roughly halfway down the page. ;)
I like the history table, had no idea Vettel had 3 DNFs.
Hence the multiple articles problem?
And comments below?
i am here and seat is good both in view and comfort but all photography is prohibited to protect the intimacy of the event and they will throw you out if they see you taking photos on your phone so phone is going off now. Also based on where all the bbc sport people got off my tram they stay at the novotel :)
Can't see it in the feed, but I see what you mean ;)
Tinfoil hats off, kids. It's an official directive from the editor not to get hung up about what other websites are doing.
Coincidences do happen, you know.
Can you clip Andrew Benson round the ear for me? ;)
Enjoy the concert!
Bad luck to all saps....
Could be worse you could have been the nth million journalist sent to cover Japan from the safe(r) side of the country.... what is that all about?...
Between F1, IndyCar (and Indy Lights), GT1 and the WRC, this is going to be a mental weekend
Binocular sales
Yeah I know - I just thought it was funny that the previews looked the same - not accusing them of anything. The article is pretty good actually...
Is he definitely out?...
Unknown. This morning is testing my capacity for multi-tasking.
Indeed. It happens a lot in blogging that similar topics get discussed independently and end up similar...
It's good to find your female side....
He totalled the car and went to hospital - the last I read, the car was so far off the road it was left there overnight...
There is a certain logical way to do a race preview - circuit, weather, form guide, etc...
what's supposed to have happened?
yikes
I'm not sure that's true. It doesn't particularly upset me if I check certain NEWS sites and there's nothing new there. Well perhaps it does a bit but I'd rather have nothing than filler.
Indeed. They should've added Rosberg on a unicycle juggling though ;)
hehe, that reminds me of the time Steve Soper totalled his BMW at Sebring and a journo caught up with him and asked, "Steve - what happened?"
Soper fixed him with the steely gaze and said, "I crashed."
Sadly this marks you out as a relative rarity!
Anyway, must dash - there is a pipe to sluice some facts down...
See ya Stuart - have fun!
Oooh, yay. Thought I was the only one who disagreed with this All News All The Time concept!!
I don't think so. There are certain websites I have stopped reading for that very reason. I would prefer unique and original content over a constant barrage of stories. But that probably doesn't pay the bills!
I'm finding my time is ever more limited so I want to be sure what I read is worth reading. Looks like the Plus section has some good things this week for when I get time to sit and read it, thank the racing gods for the start of the season. :)
The Plus section is good this week.
Ouch
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90111
:D
see ya stuart
I am also of that club
Also, it looks nothing like it :)
Hehe just me then :) Never mind!
not to me. however, good to see that more content is going behind the paywall and giving paying people more value for money.
There does seem to be a good selection of articles this week - I think the impending seasons starting re energize a lot of people.
I can see why he had to have a check up...
He'll be out if the roll cage can't be fixed by tonight...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blYvzbd_y7I
Holy ****
Indeed!
I warned the person who retweeted that not to get their hopes up!
I wonder if he just drives too hard?
Ironically, Amy retweeted it too. You should've seen how their social media specialist reached out to the Gossip Girl twitter account to get his promo retweeted... :D
Mr and Mrs C, have you seen my tweet? :)
There are occasions when I wonder if he's in stunt driver mode
That's why he's there isn't he?
Kind of, but he can also be quite quick every so often too
Yeah, the WRC needs him and Kimi.
Oooh the FIA have adjusted the DRS-thingy to work down the whole start finish straight!
The rear wing?
Mr C is all over Twitter, I am prepping a blog post.
#justiceforamy
But when do they determine there's a sufficient gap?
MUTINY!!!
And justice.
Prior corner I think
Yup
Turn 14
:)
And CAKE!
CAKE!!!
Mmm cake.
Might want to check Twitter, Lukeh. ;)
thought they were testing it first!
What am I looking for?
Apparently they've simulated the rear wing effect by firing a large ball out of a catapult
tweets from @StevenRoy27 and @AmyFulton with @AusGrandPrix.
#justiceforamy
Awwww lots of moral support for Amy!!!
What a total disgrace!
...and for those of us in work?
;)
Ohh that's awful. Boooo Lotus.
Bare in mind I've no idea what you are on about
There'll be a post shortly. Give me a minute peoples.
fair enough
Christine's article should have more details, but this one isn't Team Lotus' fault.
Oops I see what you mean, booo Australian GP twitter people.
http://bit.ly/e4P1RU
The headline we were mulling earlier
Watch and giggle is the tinfoil hat merchants make more of it than it is
WOAH.
To be fair, that's not really Ross' cup of tea. But it does make it easier for him to leave should he desire to if and when Schumi retires.
Seeing my previous comment, you're just making fun of me, aren't you? :D
I was very confused yesterday, with this cold, and I thought my computer had got from China to Germany in one day... But it hasn't Germany had just got the data that it was going to be arriving... It's very exciting tracking the machine on it's massive journey though...

With the changing of shares a few weeks back, I figured this might be the natural conclusion.
Hehehehehehe.
Makes perfect sense from that POV, for sure. But I did wonder if Ross was just really cashing it in when he sold those shares.
That's a lot of scanning :)
Ooooh. Watcha gettin'?
And it isn't even a scanner :)
Mac Book Pro
Double Oooooh. :D
Ooh, back to mere 'employee' status then (albeit a top one).
At first I was a bit worried 'oh no corporate Mercedes', but it actually makes sense for him to concentrate on the team as an F1 team rather than as a business.
Loving the Bernie story in the Express today. It's from a certain journo pairing who are well known as Bernie mouthpieces
For some weird reason, corporate Mercedes made me think of... Vince McMahon.
#wrestlingreference
Seems the news pipe is pretty big today, lots of stuff coming through. :D
Nice job having a map of the rear wing overtaking zone.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90128
Haven't seen the Express. As a paper, I find it... difficult
:)
Apparently it's on the back page, which is actually allowed to not have a Diana death conspiracy story on it.
Interesting how some folk are saying HRT will struggle to qualify this weekend - what of Virgin? Will d'Ambrosio get through?
Stunning
Here come the Belgians!
Sounds like a line in a Dad's Army script
What the?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90134
Morning folks, anything happening this weekend?
Unexpected?
It's not natural to look backwards - final proof that it wasn't Webber's fault in Turkey
#justiceforamy
see @sidepodcast's tweets. check out @stevenroy27's as well.
For sure not. More coming...
ROFLcopter!
I don't get it?
Are you in Australia?
Weird, I just tried to publish something on wordpress and instead of it coming out as just published, it said it was published over a week ago. What the?
ping: The 2011 Teams... http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=5984

No, transcribing and writing stuff on remote.
Good story.
Agreed. Makes the complicated simple!
They will be allowed in I am sure.
Yay!
That's nuts
oh I'm sure, but should they continue with pace problems during the year, it's not impossible that one of the Virgin drivers (ahem) may miss the occasional race too
Ah cool,
Are you an Autosportan?
You think?
Why have the rule then?
Is it just me or are thee no renault logos on the Red Bull overalls?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/formulaone/article-1369467/Mark-Webber-hits-Lewis-Hamiltons-jibe.html
That suggests to me that they might have thought the engine would be rebaddged?
Yeah, HRT will get a pass for not testing like they did last year.
Depends how close they are in practice. If they miss 107% in quali but they got there in FP, they'll be in.
I can't see them being excluded - they'll make some argument about money and be allowed in.
last year there was no 107% rule
that's the argument for not having the rule in the first place, and I'd agree with it
but we've got the rule... it's hard to ignore if both cars miss it
really? wow!
I think it's a bit harsh to exclude them in the first race though.
Ping for you: Rule Changes... http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=5889
Didint australia traditionally ignore the rule because of the distance from the teams bases?
RANDSTAD INCREASES COMMITMENT TO AT&T WILLIAMS
24 March 2011. Grove, UK. Williams F1 (Ticker: WGF1) is delighted to confirm that Randstad has upgraded its partnership with the AT&T Williams team.
... and further down the press release ...
We are happy that Randstad will feature even more prominently on the new car. We are looking forward to a great racing season!”
Excellent blug sir!
who's fault is it that they missed testing?
I don't really know the answer to that - where the parts held up in customs coming back from Bahrain?
Theirs. But what if it was Virgin or someone else that missed it?
I really dislike HRT for the way they operate but you may as well kick them out of the sport if you don't let them race.
it was hard to exlude the rookie Yoong ... (by the way I believe he still the last driver to have missed the cut because of the 107% rule :-) )
Ooh good, more £.
Was it? He's subsequently proven to be pants at everything he drives ;)
So do Virgin have less rights to be allowed through because they did do testing?
In theory, no. In practice...
last year all the cars were safely within the 107% limit, even with the gap between new teams and the old ones. it is not that the limit is super tough ...
In all fairness, the 107% rule was originally quite flexible. The stewards always took into account practice pace, weather and other elements when deciding a driver could race or not
Which is why I don't think they can exclude HRT.
Also, let's not forget, the rule was originally drafted because cars were sometimes 8-12 seconds off the pace, not 4.
Past experience with rules in F1 that were flexible or had loopholes shows that they tend to be allowed to be broken
*cough*MasterCard Lola*cough*
I think I saw somewhere that HRT would've failed to beat 107% on a couple of occasions last year, but I don't know if that was based on fastest Q1 time or actual pole. But it wasn't like they were miles under it.
on 1:20 sec lap 7% is about 5.6 second ... quite enough allowance I say
on the other hand, if this rule is there for the safety reasons then it does not make much sense as the speed differences this year may be as big between new and old tyres ...
And HRT got faster during the year. How do they expect the team to do that if they can't race?
The first year of the 107% rule, the Forti's missed out by less than 4 tenths and were excluded
More because of the Forti-Ford's and Pacific GP cars from a few years before hand
that was based on the Q3 pole time though and most often occurred when the car had some failure
the first race, that should say
a) they know the rules
b) they had better part of 2010 and all winter 2010/11 to build 2011 car ... not testing is only their fault
they won't be racing anyway, they'll be testing!
You're right, and I don't want to stick up for HRT. But they have an impossible job finding sponsors if they can't guarantee they will race.
Yes, but their practice pace was also well outside the 107% barrier
Different era though - the rule had just come in and the teams wanted it enforced strongly.
I agree but as I say, that's the reason for not having the 107%, not for ignoring it
Bahrain 2010 all over again :-)
I think some of the frontrunners want it enforced strongly now - they asked for it
Let's see then.
Either way, it doesn't look good for HRT.
leaving FOTA doesn't help of course
but that was the case in the past as well ... at the end it is business as any other, the competitive ones prevail the uncompetitive go bust ...
Or Virgin. remember, they're the team with Sakon now
;)
FOTA doesn't serve their interests and I see their point, but you are right, there will be no favours from the other teams.
well, it is less blue flag trouble and with all the startegy and tyre mess few more slow cars on the track removes some variables ...
But in the past we had too many teams, now we can't fill all the spots. Is it wise to be so ruthless in such times?
Yeah, why the heck have they sided with Sakon? I mean, I really want to like MVR, but they keep doing things which annoy me!
the only things he will spinning are the music discs :-)
#"Money, money, money. It looks so funny, in a rich man's world..."
he'd probably crash that too
We said the same about Sakon and HRT a year ago
But they took Ambrosio because he was a pay driver!
Matter of opinion, ask Bernie :-)
I think if there was a danger of the grid shrinking to 8-9 teams the rest would show some flexibility. But there would be benefits to some other teams if the grid shrinks to 10 teams ($$$$) ...
Some teams want three cars :-D
some teams want to finish in top 10 ...
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/justice-for-amy-how-the-australian-grand-prix-screwed-up-their-lotus-pit-tour-competition
I have decided on my Fantasy Racers teams. Drago is in the Sidepodcast league and features Sutil, Kovalainen, Kobayashi, Maldonado and Pérez.
The only drivers who aren't at any of my teams are Webber, Rosberg, Vettel, Buemi and Petrov.
Sounds good.
That explains his shock that came later then. :D
Ouch! My head will be spinning enough with trying to track Spa LMS and Turkey F1 on the same weekend, and the Spa brigade have been polite enough to move their race to Saturday...
Poor Ken :(
Mr and Mrs C get ready to get jealous...
I have been taking about 5by5 studios for a while who make some great podcasts that I really like talk show, big web show, Merlin Mann's Back to Work, the pipeline. All good stuff. Dan Benjamin who is the main host had been a coder up until the point that he started the podcast network so he actually made his own CMS for the podcast network.
On one of the shows it was revealed that just one of the features is a bookmarkelet that he gives out to each co-host. It is used to collect the links for the show notes. It checks to see if the latest show has an enclosed audio file if it doesn't e.g. The show is still in the future then it automatically adds the link to the show notes for that post. If the show has been published then it creates a brand new draft post for a future show and adds the links to that.
This plan apparently has worked perfectly until Merlin came along who does no prep and he wants to add his show notes only to already published posts. So Dan was saying he would give him a second bookmarklet.
How neat is that? Awesome podcast CMS tool.
Me too - if there's no news in F1 or sportscars, I look for information somewhere else. Travel broadens the mind on the internet just as it does outside.
Sweet!!
"Johnny Herbert (GB) makes his début in the Total 24 Hours of Spa this summer (July 30-31) when the three-time Formula One Grand Prix winner races a United Autosports Audi R8 LMS sports car for the first time.
The immensely popular Englishman joins previously announced fellow former Le Mans 24 Hour race winners and GP drivers Mark Blundell (GB) and Stefan Johansson (Sweden) plus Indy 500 race victor Eddie Cheever (USA) in the Anglo-American team’s bid for glory in the Belgian “classic”.
YAY!
Some of Dan's previous jobs have included building the CMS for a list apart and I think the New York Times...
I thought they were supposed to be checking how well the wing worked in a practise session before tinkering? Now all the maths will have to be recalculated - though I'm still anticipating an increase of zero overtaking moves.
He knows what he's doing then :)
nice
I think it's shortly before Turns 12/13.
Yeah. And he's not trying to hold down a day job at the same time as building his super dooper CMS.
:D
Alex, are you placing an iPad order tonight or joining the queues tomorrow?
This is what I dislike about Apple products - they always undersupply and make people wait so that they want it more :(
Like toys at Christmas
:/
Into Turn 14
Yep.
Mind you, it depends how many turns you think the circuit has - the modern trend seems to be to count every slightest deviation from dead straight
I would tend to agree. The Australian stewards tended to be pretty flexible in the previous 107% era, possibly because they know they're usually the first race and people want to see everybody. That said, even they drew the line at Lola in 1997 so Hispania had better have something vaguely reasonable on offer. However, Hispania may be in danger from the whims of stewards in later races.
Online order I think. I can't go join a line i'm afraid :(
You?
You don't want to spread your germs.
Doesn't turn 14 have a name?
Stewart
Stewart?
ZING!
Will see if I can pick one up in Boston next week. Online orders start at 1am tonight
Boston is next week? That was quick.
Fly out next Thurs
You may be right. But i'm almost certain that in this case they aren't undersupplying totally on purpose. Yes they might have done it anyway but apparently even in January they were still running into supply issues with the iPad 1. So if they had diverted totally to having all the iPad 2 supplies ready in stock they would have run out of iPad 1s.
I think it happens more with Apple in these cases because they do tend to use exclusive materials. They can't easily just go and buy more or outbid Samsung's or something - they were the only people a year ago who needed several million 10” touch screens.
I thought they traditionally ignored it due to it being (usually) the first race, but the distance may well have been a factor.
It does but the FIA never uses the names, increasing ambiguity.
Indeed. I will endeavour not to give the Apple Store a computer cold.
I don't think I will be up. I needs some rest I think.
Poor mr giggles :(
holy smokes. we haven't done a debrief yet!!
order ipad at 1am
watch fp1 at 1:30am
perfect start to the day :)
Scott was in the comments on Sunday and has been a great wealth of local info
:)
Correct. He missed it 3 times in 2002 but was only excluded once (in Silverstone). Sato also missed it in Australia that year but was let in because his car had been broken during the only dry bit of qualifying and had set his time when wet-weather tyres were very much needed (the fact that he broke it himself in morning practise was overlooked).
Or shortly before, if it's similar to the US
Mr C did you see my CMS thing 20 mins ago?
I believe it's there for safety reasons but it pre-dated the discovery of the amazing collapsing tyres by several months. In any case, in Q1 everyone should be on new tyres for at least one run.
The front runners may not be?
soz, no. knee deep in twitter facts. wassup?
The argument will be that they should have got what it needed to not be so slow in the first place, however unreasonable that may sound. However, I think it will be at least Malaysia before anyone gets struck by the rule - and if Malaysia has a wet qualifying again, not even then (you can't exempt a car because of a monsoon and then exclude others, otherwise it would build up resentment).
Thought you might like it it's a feature from a custom podcast CMS I thought you might think was neat. It's long so you may need to scroll back :)
They should be because they won't have access to the tyres they used in practise. They'll have been handed back to Pirelli.
Oh of course! cool!
#affinity!
I think they've got an impossible job even if they can guarantee it because the whole outfit simply looks so unstable, with not testing and what have you.
I did think of you :)
Maybe Kolles wants the team to fail so he can snap it up for a song?
Only as a tester...
For now
for now
More Thursday preview pics are up, now it is starting to feel like a race weekend
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/index.php/id/2352
it sounds like a good system. but christine writes and reads the show notes, i just turn up :)
Oh no I mean I didn't think you would really use the system. The Merlin thing made me think of you. And me a little bit. I'd probably make the whole thing and then realise that I only put them in afterwards and so it was hopeless :)
am surprised a coder would move to full time podcasting. you'll never taking coding away from me!
Great news! Good luck to Johnny :)
Apparently Andy Ihnatko has had good success connecting a Heil PR40 to his iPad 2 via the camera connection kit and a Sure x2u XLR to USB connector.
From the sounds of things his first love was radio. But he was obviously quite a talented programmer. He did say recently that he still codes every day.
Of course in the Daily I meant to put 1.30am and I was just testing you.
#oops
woohoo. hoping apple got the message about crippling the audio ports not being a very smart idea.
What do you mean?
ooh crikey, a new daily. christine woke me up with news that journeyer had joined twitter and i haven't stopped since.
*goes to read*
they nixed them between iphone3 and iphone4. i forget the details, but basically all new idevices are hopeless for pro-audio at the moment. haven't heard about the ipad2 yet.
What is Chris Lambden doing in a Hill F1 Car? http://www.autosport.com/gallery/popup.php/id/13269125
Sorry, what's pro-audio?
professional audio. as in, suitable for a broadcast.
Professional audio. Like with big wires and fancy microphones and mixing desks and stuff.
I see. so not garageband then?
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/03/24/every-day-its-a-getting-closer/
That's an awful thought. Colin can't be that desperate for staff?
Dunno. Isn't he a bit of a wheeler dealer?
Woah!!! Your site on the iPad looks... Woah!
wordpress update :)
Wordpress being tricksy again!
Wordpress now optimised for iPads, new today I think
Do I Just need to turn the mobile view on on my site?
Yeah Wordpress sent an email out about this... you can have cover pages and loading screens and allsorts...
Think so.
http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/ipad-onswipe-theme/
You got an email?
But, but the header...
On another note - does BBC News have a mobile website? The normal one doesn't work too well on the iPhone for me.
Yea, I don't like it. Hadn't got round to looking before.
There's an app for that.
I get email newsletters from wordpress.
Turned it off but it's still there.
Flippin' on by default things.
I think that midnight pie from 7 Eleven might have been the best meal I've ever eaten.
Phew. Sorted.
There is something interesting about that swipe. I remember somebody articulating this just when flipboard came out (I think it might have been Adam Lisagor) who said that while it makes no sense that flipboard flips in the middle rather than across the whole page it actually looks tons better than an earlier prototype he'd seen where it flipped across the whole thing. I think you can see that in the wordpress thing the whole page flip is slightly uncomfortable somehow.
Mine didn't turn on... Weird.
All options under Appearance > iPad.
12 hours until FP1! :D
Oh yeah!
How was the gig amy?
w000000000000000000t!
Hooray!
the first time I saw Pearl Jam and Eddie opened his mouth I got a little teary because it was such a big deal for me and tonight I think I did the same thing on at least 7 songs. Just so many songs that I love and that mean so much to me, when you hear just a dude on stage by himself with a guitar play the first few bars, it's just incredible.
Plus at one stage a guy yelled out from the crowd 'play dead man walking!' and eddie was like 'yeah i can do that' so he did :D
Then Jimmie Barnes showed up and that was weird.
Ooh and he did an epic cover of Hurt and played his cover of You've Got To Hide Your Love Away from the I Am Sam soundtrack and thats one of my favourite Beatles covers ever.
I'm so excited about going back tomorrow with Pamela, I wonder what he'll play this time :)
I'm far too excited for f1 to be working but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to get to f1 quicker ;)
See you all later!
See ya Lukeh!
A couple of programs on Sunday for people with access to BBC4...
8:00 pm - Formula One's 60th Anniversary: Plus Ca Change http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00zwmh2
9:00 pm - Grand Prix: The Killer Years http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00z8v18
Are those the same ones I linked to yesterday or are there more?
possibly, never saw your note yesterday
Was just wondering, cause normally when the F1 season starts the TV schedule goes nuts for F1 programs!
showing a 60th anniversary program 12 months too late you mean?
;)
Oh dear, the fanboys are queuing already outside Apple's Regent St shrine: http://yfrog.com/hspjrlzrj
Only 27 hours left chaps
Afternoon all.
Heh. I am by no means an Apple fanboy – I bought an Android phone! – but after three days of using an elderly Dell laptop with a missing L key I am in full pipe and slippers mode with my iMac at the moment
i have select words for them, but they're not for SPC
:)
Lurker Ted http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=208517312493536&set=a.207800965898504.56257.118639574814644&theater
Hahahahaha!
Oh, have you seen Christine's new article on Amy, Lotus, and the Aus GP Twitter?
I do have a MacBook (for work and play), but I can't be bothered with any of their other products and simply can't understand the obsessiveness behind some of the fanboys/girls. They are only products after all.
my phone died very early today so I had super awesome plan to take old phone with me as well, but it appears my old phone is still around but its battery is not. Hmm.
I might just have to use alistair more earlier in the day rather than later and rely on pamela to keep me up to date with twitter and the comments :)
I do heart my iPhone though!
Heikki is getting so many tweets hes probably sick of me already :D
yayy, nice to see Jessy there this weekend :)
Thing is, my phone makes phones calls and receives / sends texts. I don't need it for anything else.
Next time he sees you he'll go, "now where have I seen you before?"
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13269115
Swooshy. Is green and purple in this year? Very Wimbledon :)
:D
EVERYWHERE :D
nice!
Off I trot to peruse...
Looks like an off-color version of the F1 TV intro sequence...
WOW. Must find that ep.
Now this is amazing
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1369307/Japan-tsunami-earthquake-Road-repaired-SIX-days-destroyed.html
Yeah, I used to say that too ;)
IndyCar has had some amazing TV spots this week - not like anything I've seen since the split in the mid-90's
Maybe it is the new sequence
Are we going to get a new roundy swooshy FOM screen wipe?
Just to report I keep getting 'sticking' when I post a comment, it sits there for a while before sending.
Letterman obviously has an interest in the series; what else have they been doing?
odd, all good here chap :(
A site for Mr C: http://whichfontshouldiuse.com/
I haven't upgraded FF in the office yet.
and other times it is very snappy like that one :)
I'm using the older firefox and I am ok so far.
oooh Fanvision has pretty red lights when it charges.
My first problem with it was it took waaaay too long for me to get the lanyard attached. I'm really rubbish at putting those little strings through the holes on every single thing I ever try and attach one to.
Admittedly Letterman had been involved in motor racing 70's (David Letterman was a pit reporter in the very early days of such things) before becoming a team owner.
This week Helio Castroneves had a spot on the Today show and both randy Bernard and Mike Conway had TV spots too.
There have been a large number of stories in USA Today as well.
By that Nate guy?
Yep - but even he do this much before this year. Should be interesting to see if it holds up.
WHAT??
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90143
"WTCC Eyeing the Nordschleife"
2 x 2 lap races
Wow! other than VLN, when was the last touring car race there? DTM in the early 90's?
Yeah I think so and they looked mad on YouTube! I think VLN and N24 have cars of similar spec to WTCC, modified
Looks like there is some footage in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw-AxiVqihM
Must say that it's one of my favourite compilation clips!
Oh yes!!
*big, big grin*
Proper job even with no sound here. :)
They should make touring cars like that again.
I kind of want the Nordschleife to have an international touring car race with WTCC and national series meeting up, the place is big enough :)
Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed I don't have much work and there's hardly anyone here :)
I approve :)
http://bbc.in/h1hFaX
is it only me or has Mr Alonso developed Italian accent already ?
Not as much as I do. :)
This evening, I shall be hitting the bed the second I get home. It's going to be a long night
:)
still sounds Spanish to me
I'm considering saving FP2 for when I get up, live at 5.30am after a 2.5hr sleep sounds impossibe.
Six hours sleep prior to practice 1 should do me (wishful thinking)
The one time I did NOT want to be on Asia shift... will miss both sessions tomorrow. Will watch on Saturday and Sunday. :)
Same Spanishness for me
He's a bit of a wheel-dealer but I thought he had other, more sensible ways of getting staff, and I don't see what else he would get from running Hispania into the ground (seeing as the Carabantes are more likely to change the manager than sell the squad if it still has a F1 entry).
Glad the concert was so great :)
I can tell the F1 season's coming because the BBC quiz shows have more F1 questions than usual.
Ooh, they've been looking at my F1 Monopoly: Deal or No Deal board game! (The FIA is purple there).
:D
Well my shift on a certain WEBSITE has come to an end so I may go out and get some sunlight...
Plenty of it here :)
Quite. And to think they've been enduring storms, etc, in Oz.
Still sounds Spanish to me.
True. The hazards of sun-seeking... ...but I'm sure Australia will produce a great weekend of racing, so it'll be worth it.
I'm planning on doing all the sessions and hoping I don't experience a repeat of 2008.
ipad2 now in the apple store, no 'purchase' button though.
How they tantalise!
they are big, big meanies :)
Right, I am going outside
on a lovely day like today?
it is very warm here today. i don't blame you! :)
Shocking innit?
Audi-os...
later chap.
if my macbook had a matte screen i too could go outside.
see ya stuart!
Audi-os, Stuart!
anyone any good with timezones? i think i'm going slightly nuts here.
is this countdown on the fbfb correct? http://factbytefactbox.com/live
currently 2days and 14hrs to the race.
Yes.
Autosport has 15 hours?..
time until the race according to other f1 sites:
autosport: 2days 15hrs
mercedes: 2days 15hrs
williams: 2days 13hrs
renault: 3days 2minutes
what...the...
2 days 15 hours that is..
woah.. what race are renault doing..
force india: 3days 18hrs
Not all good news, apparently the cancelled Marrakech round is being replaced with... the Hungaroring.
ah-ha, ferrari agree with the fbfb:
ferrari: 2days 14hrs
:D hehe! they're gonna have a shock when they notice the race happens over a day before they expect!
You are right.
the 2 days 15 hours doesn't take into account that the clocks in the UK change this weekend.
red bull: 2days 23hrs
That's to FP1, not the race.
They're just plain wrong. They're bound to lose if they only show up on the grid on Sunday night!
I suppose that's an improvement on the year+ they had earlier, but still...
I agree with Ferrari, which proves that there is a first for everything
That's BBC repeat I believe
;)
:)
joe did a post a couple of weeks back - there is international racing events in Africa at all this year
So we have:
Williams DNF for a false start
1st: Ferrari
2nd: Mercedes (starting at the right time, but car is slightly slower)
3rd: Red Bull
4th: Renault
5th: Force India (presumably they're in the race for the airport freight)
Celica you later ;)
What, they replaced a hot twisty track with little overtaking for another? ;)
Just back from the Table Football table - gave two of my workmates a right good thrashing. In a good mood now
:)
Viva's countdown is set to Australian time, it avoids having to get my head around the whole daylight saving thing
Just had my mobile phone company call me to tell me to switch plans because I am spending too much money.
Apparently I only call a few minutes every month and use less than 300mb of data. God I love wifi!
I know this comment was a while ago, but I would soooo feel the same way! I haven't gotten to see Eddie Vedder in my life, but I would have chills and be tearing up for all his music has meant to me also.
Yep!
Currently 40 crows around my garden. All very Hitchcockian.
Oh dear.
I like the sound of bird call normally... crows were shortchanged
Hiiiiiiii :D
I had my Olympics thingy interview and it went really well.Going to enjoy what's left of my days off now as it's all been a bit hectic....
Good to hear that :)
Evening people. Sauber have arrived in the 21st century on twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/OfficialSF1Team and facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sauberf1team
Woo.
Yay!
About time.
Sorry RG but the 107% rule excludes them
cheers sir.
They'd struggle with the 1007% rule on that one...
now with added sauber:
http://sidepodcast.com/twitter
Is indy car still on sky sports 4, late sunday night?? I have the channel just from the comment wondering if it had moved!
from manipe, re: williams' countdown:
But we don't actually live that hour, so there's 2d 11h 45m 'living time' to the race but 2d 12h 45m 'clock time' to go.
so williams are technically correct too.
Nice save from Manipe :D
that means ferrari and williams are correct (but have different countdowns) and everyone else is wrong (except those with no countdowns).
hey gavin, apparently yep: http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/02/08/a-uk-tv-deal-for-indycar/
I'd like to see them try to explain that one to the FIA timers
hehe, just be glad the race doesn't span a local timezone change.
"f1 is finished before it gets started" etc.
Ping Ping:
Aussie GP Preview: http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=5924
Melbourne Track Notes: http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=5858
I totally disagree with this of course, you can't count a none existent hour
Does anyone know if there is an alternative to PicApp? I'd love to add a pic to my posts...
i think you'll probably have to apply to a bunch of teams :(
have you tried applying for media accreditation with the teams?
live telemetry from mercedes gp this year: http://www3.mercedes-gp.com/en/#/category/home/
What would that involve? I just want a couple of nice pics of F1 stuff without ripping someone off...
find their media page and you just have to fill in the form or send email, just your website name and a few basic details, nothing painful - worst they can do is say no (well, not reply at all actually)
Mercedes to give you an idea: http://media.mercedes-gp.com/
Ha!
What have you guys experienced with this? I'm just a blogger who does this for fun, remember..
so.are.we!!
Us too
Ferrari are the axis of evil you will be surprised to hear
Virgin were a bit slow to get back - twitter sorted that out
Everyone else was pretty straightforward actually - McLaren were unbelievably helpful
I could never hold a candle to either of your websites - my blog is no where near that high standard!
bridgestone alone would have been sufficient last year
talking of which, did pirelli just kick everyone out of their media site? was working the other day, now requires a logon. what did i miss?
yes
have emailed them... they've also cleverly hidden how to get a login
was just gonna point gavin that way. damnit.
they were very good during testing
audi are the best. upload to flickr, job done.
I hate Red Bull's system but plenty of choice
so this is a weird feeling... i quite like mercedes' website.
Evening all
Quick, someone go look for Mr C, I think he's been replaced by a doppelgänger
Hi Chris
don't worry, if you scroll down the homepage, you'll eventually see a picture of schumi
the clock's still wrong
:)
flatmates want to go out this evening, but have gone to a friends for pre drinks so that i can sleep early and get enough rest for Friday.. plus watch F1 :)
i have such caring friends. however i'm now in the flat alone.. what to do... hmmm :)
Hello all.
Very excited that I will be on an aeroplane to Boston in one week. :)
Hi Janna
In exactly 7 days time I will be gin'n'tonic in hand browsing the films I imagine
Oh, and hello :D
:) HP 7A for me
Bought a desk chair from staples earlier today and just tried to assemble it.
Rather difficult with only 1 out of 12 bolts. When they said 33% off, I didn't think they meant parts
Back we go...
Hi Chris, how's things?
Does The Code Of Conduct still apply? ;)
Good thanks. You?
Always although I may break the not taking off the shoes rule.
Sounds fair, cabin pressure makes the feet swell
Fine thanks. New temp job going well & I get to walk to work along the seafront.
I just remembered that when I had this conversation last year, somebody suggested to me that it was because Italy, Germany and India are in different time zones to us, thus explaining why their teams had different times to British teams

Evening all :)
Evening Lukeh
can anyone outside the uk, who proxies into the beeb help out @yourf1?
https://twitter.com/#!/YourF1/status/50994881929289728
*waves*
Who thought practise could be such an excitement? Really can't wait for FP1.
Good evening, and a warm Twitter welcome to @DarioFranchitti.
Hi all
He said on the Motorsport podcast he was thinking of signing up
You all know how much I love the North East right? Well, even I can't excuse this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/tyne/hi/front_page/newsid_9435000/9435038.stm
I am embarrassed.
I was talking with Steph @99forever the other day and someone tweeted us back with this link, seems to be a pay service though.

perfect
Has the autotune been autotuned?!!
Now I suddenly want to listen to that Friday song.
They appear to have missed autotuning the old lady who really needs it!
I keep thinking it can't get any worse. And then amazingly, it does.
:)
And yet I can't stop watching.
It certainly holds a fascination
I use that thing nearly daily and I don't know if I can anymore.
You can't take your eyes off it. it's like something from Doctor Who, there's an alien inside who's just grabbing you in...
Will be worth checking with Gavin when he's back.
In case you start singing?
In case I'm even reminded of the musical...
good use of licence payers money, that.
Autotune?
For your YMCA rendition I guess
The love train!! "the decision to choose a certain seat can change your life indelibly."
Oh god it is that Friday song after all!
#People all over the world, join hands...
Well that's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back.
I don't think I can even look at oop north the same way anymore.
Sorry.
Hehehe.
Pingled. Witopia.net. $60US a year option (VPN). Works quite well on Mac or PC or iPhone.
"Play this again"
I don't think so, thank you.
:)
6 hours!! eeeek i'm liking this countdown i have on my phone :)
:D
I am juuuuuuuuust a little bit excited. Then I saw some F1 2011 game news and I got double excited. Then mum told me she had made rhubarb crumble and custard and I almost exploded.
F1 is awesome. (so is rhubarb crumble)
Holy Stinking Dog Turds Batman!
That is begging for a parody!
#Rally
Mikko Hirvonen won the Superspecial and Kimi was 7th. Unfortunately a spectator had to be taken to hospital for a check-up after one of Mads Ostberg's wheels came off the car.
The new Mini is running in the WRC for the first time but in the S2000 class not the WRC class... and it beat all the other S2000s and some WRCs.
James Allen says it is blowing a gale and raining in Melbourne now where it is 7am. He also says he's on Australian TV today... for 7 hours.
via Twitter
Oh that sounds pretty bad.
I mean, 7 hours of james allen, yeesh.
I think I am way over excited partly because I assume P1 is going to be like any session.
Mostly Crofty with the occasional lap by HRT before it breaks down.
Oh and if it stays like James mentioned then we might as well not have P1...
Karun is joining him for qualy & the race :)
Isn't Maurice Hamilton doing FP1 and 2 with Crofty?
Yep and FP3, then Karun steps in
Yep
Thanks
You gotta read this from Motor Sport Magazine: http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/2011/03/24/motor-sport-goes-to-midsomer/
It's worth it for the contract at the end!
Another double agent?
MR C!!!!!!!!!!!
No, I started the fight - I am the Grand Prix Saboteur!
hmmmm.
;)
:)
Who would have paid out on the Honda bet after Brawn took over the team? That Merc engine was a huge step up from the Honda.
as strange as this feels i'm off to bed now... must.sleep.... slightly too excited though! eeekkkkkk!! :)
Good luck, catch ya later Lou
Has the south of England moved to a new timezone?
Students!
*tuts* :D
Hope you get to sleep ok :)
:D
:D
You will be a student too soon
Woooooo!!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiick!!!!
Thursday night, isn't it the weekend for him now?

Did FF4 swap round the open in new page/tab contextual menu options?
It's going to be a bummmmpppeer daily tomorrow. So many links! :)
Yeah, they did.
Well that's annoying
have you seen first person mario?
i saw it the other day and it blew my mind. It may even be in my instapaper links but I have so many this week I can't remember :)
Two earthquakes in Burma today near the Thai border
No info on the extent of the damage but the authorities probably won't give much away unless they have to
Hi guys
Sorry to hear about this. I just watched "Burma VJ" documentary. So good, but sad to learn about the circumstances there.
It's quite a secretive country
My favourite fact is the illegailty of photographing bridges
I wonder if the people are watching North Africa and the Middle East with interest, if they can access outside news.
They can't photograph much of anything, can they? Many were arrested for it.

Fitzroy and St. Kilda. I remember hearing those team names from the VFL way back in the day when their highlights show aired on ESPN when it first started out. :) Too bad the Grand Final Replay from last year was all pants. :(
Anyways, I look forward to getting my prediction game on today because I think the Fantasy Teams have to be submitted by the time First Practice begins. Maybe a better title for the Sofa F1 Pole Poll should be Red Bull Tipping? :D
morning all. I have a dm from ausgrandprix I'm almost too scared to read it!
*peeks out to see from behind daily writing*
You think you are scared. They unleashed the demon hordes of the internet on themselves. They are scared
Hehehehe.
I hear even the Elders of the Internet left Big Ben to help
ah it just says 'what time are you on site today i would like to meet you and see if there is a way i can make this right'
That's a good start
Tell him you want Heikki.
And also a hot dog.
that's very good. can you put that in the other thread too, pls?
Make sure you are wearing Lotus gear. Can't have you turning up in rocket red after we sold you as a Lotus fan.
Good point
And, um I did mention your Finnish flag in my tweets this morning 1 or 6 times. :)
i has a thumping headache and no rain killers in the house. I'll add it to the list of things to do before i meet pamela.

Methinks you meant to type 'pain' there. Also, what methods are there to disperse rain clouds. Any idea?
I like that he didn't even let them give him a price :D
Any smart-alecks in the area try to tip his Red Bull without him noticing? :D
don't know if you can squeeze this in the daily lukeh: http://blog.schuberth.com/en/2011/03/24/formula1-season-2011-and-new-car-racing-helmet-sf1/
for the first time you can buy the latest schuberth f1 helmet - 4,998.00 EUR.
The visor strip says SF1??? That is dangerously close to USF1
I'll take two then!
2 words: X-pensive. O.O
Wooooooooooah
*watches the seams of the daily begin to explode*
Hehehe.
Anyone else not seeing the twitter feed in the dashboard tonight?
And that's unpainted
ooh I can hear the faint whine of the minardi. This must be my queue to leave, I was supposed to go 20 minutes ago!
Have fun!
Have a fun day
Wobbly wobbly daily waily
:)
it's bigger on the inside?
Wibbly obviously
Of Lukeh's brain.
empty things look bigger with nothing inside them ;)
At what time does the BBC F1 show start?
Wwibble.
#Blackadder
FP1 is shortly before 01:30 GMT.
Do you mean the race?
No, the coverage today, FP1. I guess for FP1, FP2, FP3 the Beeb just jumps right in, there is no pre-event build up. (like last year). Just wondering if they would have something special for the first race (in AUS, as it should be!) Investigating alternate ways of watching and just want to know at what time I need to start looking.
Qualifying show begins at 5am on Sat
Sunday's race program is at 6am BST
I'd just like to mention I have never before seen "FP1" in the Twitter trending list before. It is 6th in the UK list (after promotions).
had to turn around and go home to get tonights Eddie vedder ticket. Oops. Not enough time this morning!
They usually join with about five minutes to the green light
There's not usually any pre-amble, just live online and on the Red Button shortly before 01:30
I wonder if knowing Amy will get me a lotus tour
;-)
It ousted Look North on there... I was thankful FP1 appeared.
Apologies in advance to Lukeh's daily, but Sauber ping: http://sauberinsight.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/2011-season-preview-kamui-kobayashi/
Is that gonna make you late?
Lukeh, an awesome article about Polaroid: http://screamingchickenstudio.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/who-said-it-was-impossible/
Lukeh can you put all of this site in the daily? It's got some great articles on quite a few cool things: http://en.wikipedia.org ;)
I wonder if knowing Amy will get me a pit tour
;-)
It feels like it :D
I have included a special o-meter to explain just how full it is so we all don't kerplode
"do you know who i... know?"
:D
:-)
Tis Ok, I got a smile from Martin :-)
SPEED TV will show FP1 online only and it will be here:

Forget leather folding smart covers with magnets, now there are wooden ones that roll :)
this viewable outside the US!
I'd wait until it starts properly before saying that it but it seems to be
Thanks Pat, you always have the hookup. :)
Otherwise I'd have to record it from tv and watch it tomorrow.
on the subject of lotus, a new twitter idea: https://twitter.com/#!/sparkteamlotus/
A different fan commentator each race that will feed you updates of the trackside happenings of Team Lotus.
I've made a Fantasy ManipeF1 team.
wow!
Looks a good idea, might get a tad repetitive judging by the first few tweets though...
Oooh that sounds like the kind of thing that would be perfect for the daily ;)
*stop hitting me Lukeh - joke ;) *
My goodness that's neat.
Really cool phone covers but mega expensive!
The iPad one is cheaper than Apple's fancy leather one and nicer than the cheaper Polyurethane ones
No worries.
They are putting FP2 on the telly and FP3 is back on the web link
But the iWood 4 phone covers - £150???
Good to know. I'll check what I have scheduled for my DVR tonight. I know something starts at 1:30am.
Wow, that's just silly
christine's mac is making an awful noise. surely it can last the weekend?
It's exercising for another round of fbfb'ing
So I suppose the noise is not "vrrrOOOMM", then?
Maybe that's the noise. fubfubfubfub
I'm going to need a caffeine hit before long, or a snooze
Not as silly as an iPad covered in gold, diamond and dinosaur bone.
No, really. A snip at £5m
Like this? http://www.savagechickens.com/2011/03/poker-bot.html
Dinosaur bone?? What a waste....
For the ManipeF1 Fantasy League, is there a Sidepodcast league on there? If not, I'll create one. :)
Hi folks.
Just a suggestion you all make sure your F1 live-timing is up and ready. Last year, we all realised that we had to re-register and in some cases that took hours. This year, you just need to log back in with e-mail and password, but if you can not remember your details, need to ask for a password reminder or even re-register, probably best not to wait until when you will want the live-timing. (Once logged in, it seems to remember you.)
http://www.formula1.com/live_timing/
Good thinking!
That's so T3!
Is it flash?
Also that's no way to talk about her singing ;)
Years of flash, yes. This particular moment, no :)
Smart Man that Sebastian!
I don't think there is
Great idea.
Ipad2 available? But I'm at a GP :-(
we will be late to breakfast :D
There is now. :)

And it's raining again
♥
5pm from your local Apple Store
Wurz will also be late although I'm not sure why he's going.
In Dubai on way 2 OZ. Late trip due to medical check I had 2do. Looks knee needs a service :-( it served well 36 yrs, but not recently, grrr
if wurz can, why can't ant?
joine
d
I have absolutely no idea.
Amy! Should we head for breakfast now?
SIM work for Mercedes
same
ahhh.
what's your destination and should we tweet it?
Do you not read the daily??? :P
2 doors down
I think
oh yeah! i read it 12 hours ago :)
ohh of course. A bit off to blame Peugeot then
Hehe I'm only messing. People always say that to me. I think I have selective reading :(
Been a pretty long day today. We've been organising the demon hordes of the interweb apparently :)
Victory breakfast! :D
Quite an exhilarating 24 hours - especially if you're Amy. :)
no, it's a fair call. i read the daily in about six parts due to ensuing chaos.
I'm just watching highlights of the 1985 Australian Grand Prix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84O7wHLKGX4&feature=player_embedded
Right I'm off to watch another ep of season 5 of The Wire, back in one hour :)
Fired up the FBFB: http://factbytefactbox.com/live
Season 5!
You're steaming through it
I took a break some way before Christmas, but yeah last year I watched 3 or 4 seasons. It does help that it isn't one of these US series with 25 episodes per year though!
That is the phrase used by NSFW when they unleash their audience on some spamming campaign
Easy to do. I did the same thing. Great show.
Thanks Sebastian
Live timing decided it didn't know me so you saved me a lot of hassle
Makes sense.
You can't help but watch the next one.. and the next one
Still haven't got past the first episode though I'm told I must. It just didn't inspire me
It will.
Never seen it - don't think it's been on TV here
Scott Atherton of the ALMS addresses some of the criticisms of the coverage: http://americanlemans.com/primary1.php?cat=news|15672
did not expect that!
Make a positive decision to sit and watch the first four or five no matter what. I don't think you can make any kind of judgement on one episode.
Will read this in an hour. He's older than I expected.
The guy who runs Mulsanne's Corner is not happy with it...
Tried to register for Manipe's game but kept getting the conformation / capcha code wrong. The 5/S look the same as do O/0. I have now exceeded the maximum number of registration attempts so I guess I will just forget about it. Too much hassle
Yes! hehe
I was just totally hooked. Very, very good.
Agreed. It just fell down the priority list
i think christine's machine is going to die tonight. i don't think we're going to be buying an ipad :(
What is the difference between Twitter and The Wire?
With Twitter it is restricted to 140 characters.
:D
I think my keyboard is going to die tonight unless it becomes a lot more co-operative.
Hang on. Is this the Mac Christine got about a year ago? I thought they lasted for ever
:(
There may be a cheap iMac for sale next month if rumours are to be believed
we are at breakfast!
Twitpics!
last year? no it's very old.
#sidepodtime
hahahahaha, we'll need to buy it tomorrow.
Wow, that does sound serious. Another Mac Mini?
Now would be a good time to find out the iPad really is quite useful for productivity.
I remember Christine being 'persuaded' to switch to a Mac. Can't be that long ago
4 years?
Indeed :)
http://mrschristine.com/2008/06/13/top-ten-pros-and-cons-of-the-mac/
we can contact amy directly on the fanvision console!
Listen up! Any tweet @FanVision_F1 will be shown on our new G3 device, including pics!! So let's see what you've got tweeters!!!
No way
almost 4 years.
2.5 years. Not long for a Mac
Nice. That won't get abused at all
true, but it's worked harder than any normal machine.
Catching up on twitter, seems it's been raining in Melbourne but is expected to dry for FP1
Thanks Christine. :)
All ManipeF1 needs now is a prediction competition section of it's own. ;)
Well... it can only improve from here!
was that flow-vis on th e nose of the ferrari?
Looks like it.
We're chatting on this thread: http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-australia-2011-free-practice-1
