Hello everyone.

Apologies for the late Daily, I was trying to sort out a card and some presents for my sister but neither Moonpig nor Amazon wanted to accept my order straight away, I had set up accounts and verify addresses and all sorts. The complication being that she's in Spain and it has to get there for Tuesday, so I couldn't drop it and do it tonight because I kinda put it off over and over again already. Anyway, done now, even if it might get there late..

So... who's ready for some open-wheel racing? I am! Formula 1 is back. IndyCar is back.. and we probably won't be able to see it. But Formula 1 is back!!

Some people definitely ready for F1 are Australians and people in Australia who aren't Australian. If that's you, and you're in Melbourne on Friday morning, you really should meet up with fellow Sidepodders for the Annual Sidepodbreakfast!

Venue: 2 Doors Down, Fitzroy St, St Kilda

Time: 10.30am Friday

Amy met Pamela there for the first time a year ago, since then they've each explored Europe and both went to the Belgian GP with the Euro contingent. Come along tomorrow and see where it takes you!

Competitions

With the season upon us this weekend (hallelujah!) it is time to think about the competitions we want to play. The following suggestions came up during a discussion yesterday:

  • The SofaF1 Pole Poll is run by our very own Giggles. There shouldn't be any excuse for missing this one, it is dead easy: make your choices for pole and the top 10 finishing positions for Australia, and do the same for the whole year. Look there's even a draggy-droppy thing to help!
  • The Fantasy Racers Sidepodleague is back and Steven has written about the details you need to join up.
  • ManipeF1 has a management game I've been looking at joining. It is run in the classic style, you have a pot of €85m to buy a chassis, and engine and two drivers.
  • My own TMR Game has been running for a little while but you are still free to join! Just choose your top F1, IndyCar and NASCAR picks for this weekend. As a special introductory offer, new players who join this week or next week will be given 80% of the lowest amount scored each week for every week they've missed from the start of the year. A bit of help to catch-up before the meat of the season, enough of a penalty that you'll need to play well. But next week is the last chance to take the offer!

Reading

While you're thinking about your teams, have a read of these fine items.

Leigh has the definitive coverage of the Lotus v Lotus argument court case which is well worth a look, as well as an explanation of the new rules from Mickey Schu.

Some good news from Jonny Noble of Autosport about the F1 track runs:

Some great news about track running this year. UBS is donating $50 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every track lap run in 2011

NobleF1's Twitter avatarNobleF1

The UBS charity donation means that everyone in the paddock can raise at least $950 this year. Absolutely no excuse for anyone not doing it.

Wondering where Christian Klien landed after not getting the apparently much sought-after HRT drive that went to Liuzzi? He's gone back to sportscars, but not Peugeot - he's joined the promising Aston Martin project run by Prodrive. They have a new car this year which whilst not looking or sounding anything like as awesome as the coupe, should be a bit faster and more level with Audi and Peugeot. Is he the man to sort out that car? Probably not, but I'm glad he has a drive somewhere.

Races This Weekend

F1 and IndyCar not enough? How about some Kimi action in Rally Portugal? GT1 at Abu Dhabi? Bikes at Donington? Two NASCAR races? There's tonnes going on!

  • Formula 1, Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne. (with V8 Supercar)
  • IndyCar Series, Grand Prix of St Pete, St Petersburg, Florida. (with Indy Lights)
  • WRC, Rally Portugal.
  • GT1, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • NASCAR, California Speedway, Fontana. (Cup and Nationwide)
  • World Superbike, Donington Park.

Don't forget when you are planning your race-watching across timezones, the clocks change across Europe on Sunday morning as we add an hour.

To prepare for the F1 action you are going to need some Race Information, now featuring the fantastic addition of the two tyre compounds in use this weekend. Pirelli have provided a nice little page explaining their F1 tyre range. If you're still confused just remember the song!

Enjoy your Thursday and don't forget tonight, 1am GMT for Free Practice 1!

What happened there?? Bizarre. Unless there's 4 tours they're giving away?

Tweet them to ask what happened?

For those just coming into the comments this morning: please, PLEASE help Amy. She unfairly lost out on a Lotus pit tour from @ausgrandprix.

    http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50742393896583168

Amy tweeted second there, only for them to come up with a new hashtag. Amy got beat the second time, but she should've won the first time!

Spread the word and help Amy get what she deserves.

indeed. getting more annoyed with ausgrandprix now, using Tweetdeck as an excuse. tsk tsk. have duly replied to him.

  • Amy via Alistair24/03/2011 at 05:05

their excuse is a cop out. its not that they didnt see my tweet its that they changed their mind about which hashtag to use after they already said which WOULD win

  • Amy via Alistair24/03/2011 at 05:23

no dm, i meant their we use tweet deck excuse.

at least im pretty sure ill make it to the stage for autographs. lots of ferrari fans in front of me and staff alway make them move fast. strictly one item only!

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 05:26

no dm, i meant their we use tweet deck excuse.

ahhh, yes. which is why i replied to them with the tweet (also from tweetdeck) with the original hashtag. knowing his gaffe, he hasn't replied since. we need reinforcements from the rest of the gang - time to name and shame...

Mclaren back with a very simple, and flat exhaust

So they got rid of the new exhaust they were running in testing? That's not a good sign, is it?

  • Paul24/03/2011 at 07:11

Mclaren dude said the trick exhaust was taking them 300 hours to make and they were burning through them in 10 laps!

Mclaren dude said the trick exhaust was taking them 300 hours to make and they were burning through them in 10 laps!

i wonder how much speed they'll lose by going back to the original exhaust?

  • Paul24/03/2011 at 07:12

So they got rid of the new exhaust they were running in testing? That's not a good sign, is it?

Yup, not sure if they will try it again. They are trying a different rear now

The GP organizers won't notice the screw-up their social media specialist made until we make enough noise. So a lot of RTing and tweeting their account is needed. Name and shame.

checking out that tweet about who was first and second but I must say I am confused, not really sure what is going on. I see Amy being second but with a typo in the hashtag ... or did I miss something ?

  • Nick24/03/2011 at 07:37

Which is why an RT would be appreciated. ;)

I have tweeted them, might be best to swamp them with diffewrent tweets rather than just the same one? In tweetdeck you cant really tell how many RT's a tweet have

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 07:37

checking out that tweet about who was first and second but I must say I am confused, not really sure what is going on. I see Amy being second but with a typo in the hashtag ... or did I miss something ?

Dunno, but I have retweeted and also sent them a tweet.

checking out that tweet about who was first and second but I must say I am confused, not really sure what is going on. I see Amy being second but with a typo in the hashtag ... or did I miss something ?

their first hashtag was #iloveausgp. they then switched to #ausgptour, as if the first hashtag never happened. :O

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 07:38

I have tweeted them, might be best to swamp them with diffewrent tweets rather than just the same one? In tweetdeck you cant really tell how many RT's a tweet have

I said to them they should have used the twitter website instead as that was fairer.

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 07:38

Dunno, but I have retweeted and also sent them a tweet.

    #ILoveAusGP vs #iloveausgp

I have tweeted them, might be best to swamp them with diffewrent tweets rather than just the same one? In tweetdeck you cant really tell how many RT's a tweet have

good idea. i did that myself. best to do an RT and make one of your own.

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 07:39

    #ILoveAusGP vs #iloveausgp

Why have they got two hashtags?

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 07:40

their first hashtag was #iloveausgp. they then switched to #ausgptour, as if the first hashtag never happened. :O

Ok, that I did not see anywhere. that is not nice at all ...

  • Nick24/03/2011 at 07:40

    #ILoveAusGP vs #iloveausgp

Hashtags arent case sensitive, neither is twitter search

  • Nick24/03/2011 at 07:41

I said to them they should have used the twitter website instead as that was fairer.

    It shouldnt make any difference

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 07:41

Ok, that I did not see anywhere. that is not nice at all ...

    Indeed.

    First hashtag: http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50742393896583168

    Second hashtag: http://twitter.com/#!/ausgrandprix/status/50750141862391808

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 07:42

    It shouldnt make any difference

Right. But their excuse was "We use Tweetdeck" - which is unfair as most people would check the twitter website hashtag search first, right?

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 07:43

Right. But their excuse was "We use Tweetdeck" - which is unfair as most people would check the twitter website hashtag search first, right?

what tweetdeck has to do with them changing the hashtag is not entirely clear to my sleepy brain ...

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 07:43

Right. But their excuse was "We use Tweetdeck" - which is unfair as most people would check the twitter website hashtag search first, right?

As Amy said earlier, it's a cop-out. I reckon Amy would still be second even if they used Tweetdeck to check the first hashtag.

  • startledbunny24/03/2011 at 07:44

has anyone taken a screen shot of the first competition tweet in case they delete it later?

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 07:44

has anyone taken a screen shot of the first competition tweet in case they delete it later?

it is not jury trial :-)

  • startledbunny24/03/2011 at 07:45

it is not jury trial :-)

    hehe

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 07:45

what tweetdeck has to do with them changing the hashtag is not entirely clear to my sleepy brain ...

i'm guessing it's related to the second hashtag. again, they're treating it as if the first hashtag never happened. which is weird because the original tweet is still there.

  • Nick24/03/2011 at 07:45

Ok, that I did not see anywhere. that is not nice at all ...

Beyond that, im pretty sure its against the law to run competitions like that. there are quite strict rules i remember. In Queensland anyway

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 07:45

has anyone taken a screen shot of the first competition tweet in case they delete it later?

Hehehe! And in any case, there were people who retweeted it. And they can't delete ALL the tweets with the first hashtag...

  • Pamela24/03/2011 at 07:46

I have retweeted Steven. Also some ppl who were offered the tour weren't even there so they just clogged up twitter :(

I was wondering that, actually. If there was a trade & industry representative there, they wouldn't have let that happen.

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 07:49

anyway, I am wondering why would so many people who came to the GP spend time staring at the screens of their phones and tweeting instead of enjoying the being there ...

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 07:50

thats why after the first hashtag i put my phone away because i thought it was done and dusted, thats why i missed the second one.

I was so upset, I don't win things lots of times and I don't mind, but I thought I had won so to not get the prize bought on the tears. But now I feel much better, getting to get my things autographed by Heikki was lovely and then I asked Tom if the new merchandise would be in Malaysia because I want the new hat :)

They didn't offer a spot to @nayby69 or @woyung and they were the other two top 3 of the first hashtag so that's definitely it - they ignored that one complely even after saying 'will win' the key word being WILL :D

  • Amy24/03/2011 at 07:57

The Australian Grand Prix is supposed to be fun in the sun :)

(Actually the end of the race is going to be scarily dark if the weather doesn't get better!)

Just finished transcribing a Vettel Q&A, and (no doubt to much mirth hereabouts) about to extract a news story from it.

I actually like the summary articles that go along with the Q&A's as I don't like reading the entire thing unless there is something where I want to see the context of it too.

I think the mirth here is because when a press release is issued, more than one article is made out of it?

  • Lady Snowcat24/03/2011 at 09:32

The news is there is no news.

At least you know that there will be some tomorrow....

I'm not sure that's true. It doesn't particularly upset me if I check certain NEWS sites and there's nothing new there. Well perhaps it does a bit but I'd rather have nothing than filler.

I don't think so. There are certain websites I have stopped reading for that very reason. I would prefer unique and original content over a constant barrage of stories. But that probably doesn't pay the bills!

  • Pat W24/03/2011 at 09:44

Sadly this marks you out as a relative rarity!

Depends how close they are in practice. If they miss 107% in quali but they got there in FP, they'll be in.

Depends how close they are in practice. If they miss 107% in quali but they got there in FP, they'll be in.

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:22

I can't see them being excluded - they'll make some argument about money and be allowed in.

that's the argument for not having the rule in the first place, and I'd agree with it

RANDSTAD INCREASES COMMITMENT TO AT&T WILLIAMS

24 March 2011. Grove, UK. Williams F1 (Ticker: WGF1) is delighted to confirm that Randstad has upgraded its partnership with the AT&T Williams team.

... and further down the press release ...

    Excellent blug sir!

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:24

I think it's a bit harsh to exclude them in the first race though.

who's fault is it that they missed testing?

I don't really know the answer to that - where the parts held up in customs coming back from Bahrain?

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:26

who's fault is it that they missed testing?

Theirs. But what if it was Virgin or someone else that missed it?

I really dislike HRT for the way they operate but you may as well kick them out of the sport if you don't let them race.

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:26

I think it's a bit harsh to exclude them in the first race though.

it was hard to exlude the rookie Yoong ... (by the way I believe he still the last driver to have missed the cut because of the 107% rule :-) )

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:27

Theirs. But what if it was Virgin or someone else that missed it?

So do Virgin have less rights to be allowed through because they did do testing?

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:27

So do Virgin have less rights to be allowed through because they did do testing?

    In theory, no. In practice...

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:28

I really dislike HRT for the way they operate but you may as well kick them out of the sport if you don't let them race.

last year all the cars were safely within the 107% limit, even with the gap between new teams and the old ones. it is not that the limit is super tough ...

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 11:28

    Why have the rule then?

In all fairness, the 107% rule was originally quite flexible. The stewards always took into account practice pace, weather and other elements when deciding a driver could race or not

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:29

In all fairness, the 107% rule was originally quite flexible. The stewards always took into account practice pace, weather and other elements when deciding a driver could race or not

Which is why I don't think they can exclude HRT.

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 11:30

In all fairness, the 107% rule was originally quite flexible.

Also, let's not forget, the rule was originally drafted because cars were sometimes 8-12 seconds off the pace, not 4.

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:30

Which is why I don't think they can exclude HRT.

Past experience with rules in F1 that were flexible or had loopholes shows that they tend to be allowed to be broken

  • Journeyer24/03/2011 at 11:30

Also, let's not forget, the rule was originally drafted because cars were sometimes 8-12 seconds off the pace, not 4.

    *cough*MasterCard Lola*cough*

  • Pat W24/03/2011 at 11:31

last year all the cars were safely within the 107% limit, even with the gap between new teams and the old ones. it is not that the limit is super tough ...

I think I saw somewhere that HRT would've failed to beat 107% on a couple of occasions last year, but I don't know if that was based on fastest Q1 time or actual pole. But it wasn't like they were miles under it.

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:32

Which is why I don't think they can exclude HRT.

on 1:20 sec lap 7% is about 5.6 second ... quite enough allowance I say

on the other hand, if this rule is there for the safety reasons then it does not make much sense as the speed differences this year may be as big between new and old tyres ...

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:32

I think I saw somewhere that HRT would've failed to beat 107% on a couple of occasions last year, but I don't know if that was based on fastest Q1 time or actual pole. But it wasn't like they were miles under it.

And HRT got faster during the year. How do they expect the team to do that if they can't race?

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:32

The first year of the 107% rule, the Forti's missed out by less than 4 tenths and were excluded

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 11:33

    *cough*MasterCard Lola*cough*

More because of the Forti-Ford's and Pacific GP cars from a few years before hand

I think I saw somewhere that HRT would've failed to beat 107% on a couple of occasions last year, but I don't know if that was based on fastest Q1 time or actual pole. But it wasn't like they were miles under it.

that was based on the Q3 pole time though and most often occurred when the car had some failure

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:33

The first year of the 107% rule, the Forti's missed out by less than 4 tenths and were excluded

the first race, that should say

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:33

And HRT got faster during the year. How do they expect the team to do that if they can't race?

    a) they know the rules

    b) they had better part of 2010 and all winter 2010/11 to build 2011 car ... not testing is only their fault

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:34

And HRT got faster during the year. How do they expect the team to do that if they can't race?

they won't be racing anyway, they'll be testing!

    a) they know the rules

    b) they had better part of 2010 and all winter 2010/11 to build 2011 car ... not testing is only their fault

You're right, and I don't want to stick up for HRT. But they have an impossible job finding sponsors if they can't guarantee they will race.

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 11:35

The first year of the 107% rule, the Forti's missed out by less than 4 tenths and were excluded

Yes, but their practice pace was also well outside the 107% barrier

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 11:35

The first year of the 107% rule, the Forti's missed out by less than 4 tenths and were excluded

Different era though - the rule had just come in and the teams wanted it enforced strongly.

You're right, and I don't want to stick up for HRT. But they have an impossible job finding sponsors if they can't guarantee they will race.

I agree but as I say, that's the reason for not having the 107%, not for ignoring it

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:36

they won't be racing anyway, they'll be testing!

Bahrain 2010 all over again :-)

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 11:36

FOTA doesn't serve their interests and I see their point, but you are right, there will be no favours from the other teams.

  • F1Wolf24/03/2011 at 11:39

I think some of the frontrunners want it enforced strongly now - they asked for it

  • Alex Andronov24/03/2011 at 12:17

Mr and Mrs C get ready to get jealous...

I have been taking about 5by5 studios for a while who make some great podcasts that I really like talk show, big web show, Merlin Mann's Back to Work, the pipeline. All good stuff. Dan Benjamin who is the main host had been a coder up until the point that he started the podcast network so he actually made his own CMS for the podcast network.

On one of the shows it was revealed that just one of the features is a bookmarkelet that he gives out to each co-host. It is used to collect the links for the show notes. It checks to see if the latest show has an enclosed audio file if it doesn't e.g. The show is still in the future then it automatically adds the link to the show notes for that post. If the show has been published then it creates a brand new draft post for a future show and adds the links to that.

This plan apparently has worked perfectly until Merlin came along who does no prep and he wants to add his show notes only to already published posts. So Dan was saying he would give him a second bookmarklet.

How neat is that? Awesome podcast CMS tool.

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 12:17

Oooh, yay. Thought I was the only one who disagreed with this All News All The Time concept!!

Me too - if there's no news in F1 or sportscars, I look for information somewhere else. Travel broadens the mind on the internet just as it does outside.

Mind you, it depends how many turns you think the circuit has - the modern trend seems to be to count every slightest deviation from dead straight

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 12:31

Interesting how some folk are saying HRT will struggle to qualify this weekend - what of Virgin? Will d'Ambrosio get through?

They will be allowed in I am sure.

I would tend to agree. The Australian stewards tended to be pretty flexible in the previous 107% era, possibly because they know they're usually the first race and people want to see everybody. That said, even they drew the line at Lola in 1997 so Hispania had better have something vaguely reasonable on offer. However, Hispania may be in danger from the whims of stewards in later races.

This is what I dislike about Apple products - they always undersupply and make people wait so that they want it more :(

You may be right. But i'm almost certain that in this case they aren't undersupplying totally on purpose. Yes they might have done it anyway but apparently even in January they were still running into supply issues with the iPad 1. So if they had diverted totally to having all the iPad 2 supplies ready in stock they would have run out of iPad 1s.

I think it happens more with Apple in these cases because they do tend to use exclusive materials. They can't easily just go and buy more or outbid Samsung's or something - they were the only people a year ago who needed several million 10” touch screens.

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 12:35

Didint australia traditionally ignore the rule because of the distance from the teams bases?

I thought they traditionally ignored it due to it being (usually) the first race, but the distance may well have been a factor.

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 12:36

    Doesn't turn 14 have a name?

it was hard to exlude the rookie Yoong ... (by the way I believe he still the last driver to have missed the cut because of the 107% rule :-) )

Correct. He missed it 3 times in 2002 but was only excluded once (in Silverstone). Sato also missed it in Australia that year but was let in because his car had been broken during the only dry bit of qualifying and had set his time when wet-weather tyres were very much needed (the fact that he broke it himself in morning practise was overlooked).

on the other hand, if this rule is there for the safety reasons then it does not make much sense as the speed differences this year may be as big between new and old tyres ...

I believe it's there for safety reasons but it pre-dated the discovery of the amazing collapsing tyres by several months. In any case, in Q1 everyone should be on new tyres for at least one run.

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 12:42

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 12:44

And HRT got faster during the year. How do they expect the team to do that if they can't race?

The argument will be that they should have got what it needed to not be so slow in the first place, however unreasonable that may sound. However, I think it will be at least Malaysia before anyone gets struck by the rule - and if Malaysia has a wet qualifying again, not even then (you can't exempt a car because of a monsoon and then exclude others, otherwise it would build up resentment).

  • Alex Andronov24/03/2011 at 12:44

    Phew. Sorted.

  • Alex Andronov24/03/2011 at 13:26

There is something interesting about that swipe. I remember somebody articulating this just when flipboard came out (I think it might have been Adam Lisagor) who said that while it makes no sense that flipboard flips in the middle rather than across the whole page it actually looks tons better than an earlier prototype he'd seen where it flipped across the whole thing. I think you can see that in the wordpress thing the whole page flip is slightly uncomfortable somehow.

    Hooray!

  • Amy24/03/2011 at 13:33

    How was the gig amy?

the first time I saw Pearl Jam and Eddie opened his mouth I got a little teary because it was such a big deal for me and tonight I think I did the same thing on at least 7 songs. Just so many songs that I love and that mean so much to me, when you hear just a dude on stage by himself with a guitar play the first few bars, it's just incredible.

Plus at one stage a guy yelled out from the crowd 'play dead man walking!' and eddie was like 'yeah i can do that' so he did :D

Then Jimmie Barnes showed up and that was weird.

Ooh and he did an epic cover of Hurt and played his cover of You've Got To Hide Your Love Away from the I Am Sam soundtrack and thats one of my favourite Beatles covers ever.

I'm so excited about going back tomorrow with Pamela, I wonder what he'll play this time :)

  • Lukeh24/03/2011 at 13:38

I do have a MacBook (for work and play), but I can't be bothered with any of their other products and simply can't understand the obsessiveness behind some of the fanboys/girls. They are only products after all.

  • Amy24/03/2011 at 13:56

my phone died very early today so I had super awesome plan to take old phone with me as well, but it appears my old phone is still around but its battery is not. Hmm.

I might just have to use alistair more earlier in the day rather than later and rely on pamela to keep me up to date with twitter and the comments :)

My first problem with it was it took waaaay too long for me to get the lanyard attached. I'm really rubbish at putting those little strings through the holes on every single thing I ever try and attach one to.

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 14:20

Letterman obviously has an interest in the series; what else have they been doing?

Admittedly Letterman had been involved in motor racing 70's (David Letterman was a pit reporter in the very early days of such things) before becoming a team owner.

This week Helio Castroneves had a spot on the Today show and both randy Bernard and Mike Conway had TV spots too.

There have been a large number of stories in USA Today as well.

Dunno. Isn't he a bit of a wheeler dealer?

He's a bit of a wheel-dealer but I thought he had other, more sensible ways of getting staff, and I don't see what else he would get from running Hispania into the ground (seeing as the Carabantes are more likely to change the manager than sell the squad if it still has a F1 entry).

    red bull: 2days 23hrs

They're just plain wrong. They're bound to lose if they only show up on the grid on Sunday night!

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 16:03

    force india: 3days 18hrs

I suppose that's an improvement on the year+ they had earlier, but still...

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 16:03

    ferrari: 2days 14hrs

I agree with Ferrari, which proves that there is a first for everything

Not all good news, apparently the cancelled Marrakech round is being replaced with... the Hungaroring.

joe did a post a couple of weeks back - there is international racing events in Africa at all this year

  • Alianora La Canta24/03/2011 at 16:05

    So we have:

Williams DNF for a false start

    1st: Ferrari

2nd: Mercedes (starting at the right time, but car is slightly slower)

    3rd: Red Bull

    4th: Renault

5th: Force India (presumably they're in the race for the airport freight)

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 16:06

What, they replaced a hot twisty track with little overtaking for another? ;)

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/03/2011 at 16:06

Just back from the Table Football table - gave two of my workmates a right good thrashing. In a good mood now

    :)

  • Maverick24/03/2011 at 16:07

currently 2days and 14hrs to the race.

Viva's countdown is set to Australian time, it avoids having to get my head around the whole daylight saving thing

  • RubberGoat24/03/2011 at 16:07

Just had my mobile phone company call me to tell me to switch plans because I am spending too much money.

Apparently I only call a few minutes every month and use less than 300mb of data. God I love wifi!

  • Kai24/03/2011 at 16:09

the first time I saw Pearl Jam and Eddie opened his mouth I got a little teary because it was such a big deal for me and tonight I think I did the same thing on at least 7 songs. Just so many songs that I love and that mean so much to me, when you hear just a dude on stage by himself with a guitar play the first few bars, it's just incredible.

I know this comment was a while ago, but I would soooo feel the same way! I haven't gotten to see Eddie Vedder in my life, but I would have chills and be tearing up for all his music has meant to me also.

  • Pat W24/03/2011 at 16:09

    from manipe, re: williams' countdown:

But we don't actually live that hour, so there's 2d 11h 45m 'living time' to the race but 2d 12h 45m 'clock time' to go.

so williams are technically correct too.

No, the coverage today, FP1. I guess for FP1, FP2, FP3 the Beeb just jumps right in, there is no pre-event build up. (like last year). Just wondering if they would have something special for the first race (in AUS, as it should be!) Investigating alternate ways of watching and just want to know at what time I need to start looking.

  • Sebastian X24/03/2011 at 23:02

    Hi folks.

Just a suggestion you all make sure your F1 live-timing is up and ready. Last year, we all realised that we had to re-register and in some cases that took hours. This year, you just need to log back in with e-mail and password, but if you can not remember your details, need to ask for a password reminder or even re-register, probably best not to wait until when you will want the live-timing. (Once logged in, it seems to remember you.)

I took a break some way before Christmas, but yeah last year I watched 3 or 4 seasons. It does help that it isn't one of these US series with 25 episodes per year though!

That is the phrase used by NSFW when they unleash their audience on some spamming campaign

Easy to do. I did the same thing. Great show.

  • Steven Roy24/03/2011 at 23:30

    Thanks Sebastian

Live timing decided it didn't know me so you saved me a lot of hassle

Make a positive decision to sit and watch the first four or five no matter what. I don't think you can make any kind of judgement on one episode.

The guy who runs Mulsanne's Corner is not happy with it...

  • Steven Roy24/03/2011 at 23:36

Tried to register for Manipe's game but kept getting the conformation / capcha code wrong. The 5/S look the same as do O/0. I have now exceeded the maximum number of registration attempts so I guess I will just forget about it. Too much hassle

  • Kai24/03/2011 at 23:36

You can't help but watch the next one.. and the next one

    Yes! hehe
