G’day everyone! Two days to go until the action begins in Melbourne and the season begins!
But don’t let me go and make some sort of preview for the race – we want someone from Australia to go and do that. Why not sign up here? Christine will be very happy if you do…
Speaking of what makes Christine happy, she’s released her driver and team rankings for the week – with some funny goings on even though the teams are en route to the Grand Prix.
Have you guys noticed all the hard work coding and redesigning all of the Sidepodcast related websites? Both Mr. C and Christine have been working very hard improving all of the behind the scenes stuff and it really shows, with better designs and much faster load times. Read about that here.
Oh, Mr C. wants to tell you that Firefox 4 came out yesterday and he would really like all you Firefox users to upgrade… as shiny new browsers are always better. Gotta love this download hits world map thingy they have – very beautiful!
Have you figured out the colour coding for Pirelli tyres yet? Confusing, isn’t it? Never fear – Christine has a great way of helping us remember the colours with a very lovely song!
Karun Chandhok is back as a Team Lotus reserve driver and will be driving some of the practice sessions. As Ant will not be going to Australia this weekend, do you think he will be commentating with Crofty too?
Craig Lowndes and Jenson Button drove an F1 car around Bathurst – check the video and pics from Mattg81! Apparently they smashed the lap record by 20 seconds!
Speaking of Pics, Lukeh took some excellent shots from his surprise visit to Mercedes Benz World with Lou – apparently they are planning a guest post soon, so stay tuned!
Do you play ModNation Racers? It’s like an improved Mario Kart for PS3. Apparently you can modify almost anything in it and this guy likes making F1 cars! Eat that, First Person Mario!
Maybe you play F1 2010 still? Well, Marussia Virgin have a fun new championship where you post hotlaps at the Grand Prix leading up to the race – more details here.
Maybe you are making picks for the TMR Game? It was a mega week with MotoGP, NASCAR and Sebring and the results are in. Don’t forget to make your picks!
And as if there was not enough F1 this weekend, @LookingSpiffy on Twitter has found two documentaries the BBC will be playing over the weekend too!
Here’s a great article about Adrian Newey – who knew he got expelled from school at 16?
Apparently some Polish F1 Websites are joining together to send a MASSIVE get well soon card to Robert Kubica – so spread the word amongst the Bobby K fans and let’s see if we can help them get the job done!
Fancy winning a prize? Well Hugo Boss are asking people to design overalls for the McLaren boys – so get your pens and paper ready! I reckon we should go old school and paint them orange. What do you think?
Speaking of old school, VivaF1 have a great article on the 1.5 litre F1 era, which ironically had the same motives and complaints as today’s technical regulations ;)
Thinking about McLaren Legends... Badger met with Mika Hakkinen, who gave their deputy editor a ride in the awesome Caparo T1 car – seems like they have managed to make one that doesn’t catch fire, either ;)
Finally check out this awesome use of macro focus on this Ladybird pic – I love it!
Well that’s all from me – enjoy your day and if you are in Melbourne, say hi to Joe for us and let us know what is happening in Grand Prix town ;)
Hello new daily!
Umm.. as much as I want F1 to hurry up I think gavin may be jumping towards the weekend a day too quickly... :)
Ooh it's been sorted now. I wondered what the date was for a moment :D
Yeah that's what happens when you start writing after 12am in Europe and you get the date wrong. I think i fixed it?
Seems ok now!
I also learnt by looking at the windows clock diary thingy that this weekend the clocks are changing.
Indeed. They change sunday morning. That's why the Aussie GP is on this weekend and not earlier
Nice daily, Gavin. Lots of goodiness and those ModNation racers things are fantastic :)
Thanks man
ooh yay, new daily. shall get me a guinness and settle down to read.
Hey folks,
Only stopping in for a moment. Several posts will be up in the morning should Wordpress bother to work.
On the plus side, today is not only my Dad's 66th birthday - it is also the day he retires.
:)
Congratulations! Have a happy birthday and retirement, Leigh's Dad!
Time to head off to sleep I think, goodnight guys
Goodnight!
night lukeh
Congrats man!
See you all in the morning ;)
cheers ali, gavin
:)
Half way. Less stopping more driving me thinks
In Melbourne news, I can tell from this picture http://yfrog.com/hsa37ytj that Rosberg tweeted that he went to the zoo.
It's not weird to know what the zoo's fence looks like is it?
I thought you learned this last year!
:-) you would think
Not at all.
*steps away very slowly*
ace daily gavin, nice job of fitting the song in too.
I approve of this comment :)
Noooo road works
i'm surprised it took this long! how much further?
320k
About 4 hours give or take?
About that
thats more than enough time, well done ;)
Hooray i went to the bank and got the stamp i needed to get out money for Malaysia. I think thats almost all my pre trip errands done, just need new togs.and my Malaysian currency. 2 weeks til departure!
You need a stamp to get Malaysian money?
I keep my travel fund in an online account separate to my bank, and I closed the account it was linked to which meant the money was trapped there. They wouldn't let me change the linked account unless I had a stamped certified statement proving the other account was closed and I've been procrastinating doing it for months. Having an account I could put money into but not get it out of made saving very very easy :D
Hello everyone.
Yay, made it to Melbourne. Now, wonder if I should go look at the track.
Grrrrr. rubbish wifi at the hotel. iPad can't get anything. I may be stuck with iPhone only :-(
Welcome to Melbourne Paul :) Too bad the weather isn't warmer :(
I have hope that I can leave work at 5 to be at dinner by 530 - 600pm.
Woohoo! Getting excited :-)
track is closed to the public :(
you should be getting ready to go get the tram to dinner :D
boo. Ok I will try to work out the teams along stkilda road
Ah, you've lost me.
hang on, you weren't talking to me. Sorry!
heheh any tram along st kilda road will get you to where you need to be (stop 14), it's just the 72 that goes from commercial road if you don't want to walk to st kilda road first.
:D
ooh and make sure you have coins so you can buy a ticket on board. if you've got no coins you'll have to get one before you get on.
Right, my nOtes say tram 72
you have to pay ?!
yes, i can't think of many places in the world where public transport is free. you can fare evade if you're game though, the odds of an inspector are low :D
I'm a tourist
*Plays dumb*
that only works if you've got a foreign accent.
you should be alright though because it'll be after work hours so the trams are normally busy enough that the inspectors stay away. I haven't been asked for a ticket in about 8 months, no wonder people fare evade so much :)
Cripes. Girl next to me us reading the art of war
I read that once to impress a boy. It worked.
I'm impressed!
Hehe I got on the one tram thatwent back up commercial road. Let's try this again......
hahah your notes should have said towards melbourne university!
This one is better
thats good, just remember, arts precinct! or it might be arts centre. either way its stop 14. even if you miss it, all the stops after that are good too for the #1 :)
I remember there was time that race ticket get you free tram ride in Melbourne. or is it only on race day ? (I usually walked from St Kilda so I have no idea)
only on thurs-fri-sat-sun and only from the city
Oh, it is Wed only ... that reminds me, this is the day I should fly down under ... next year, next year ...
http://twitter.com/MarussiaVirgin/statuses/50430052189487105
so Sakons $$$ move from HRT to Virgin this year ...
woot!
I did not expect it to be this hard sitting here reading watching listening to all the build up to Melbourne GP... the arrival of F1 season itself is not exciting me much so far, but kind of got used to the late March long weekend down under ... have to be back in 2012
i have left work and made it down all 14 floors with no one else trying to get in my lift yay!
that's how i felt Singapore 09. Surprisingly hard not to be there.
same here Singapore 2010 ... I will be back this year :-)
pamela and i have our tickets booked. I think I'm more excited about that race than i am the race thats staring me in the face
that is probably because the race staring you in the face is right at your backyard :-)
it was much more exciting when it required a plane trip, yes. And the first year i lived here was too. Now at year 3 here excitement is only 50% of old.
Paul and i have met :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgQEI5ALv0o&feature=player_embedded
this looks like the official Bathurst video ...
Morning all :)
there are more girls here this year
Joe is at the bar chatting. Ahem
Joe, your public is waiting. Step away from the suits at the bar
Are you guys going to ask about motorsport.com or has that been resolved?
Maybe they are suits from motorsport.com?
Come on Joe. Please.
we are going to ask because he didn't answer Mr c's comment about it
oooh
#conspiracy #meninsuits
Oooooo Joe is on
Seems Fish and chips is the only meal available at the bar!
it's an angling club cliche
Morning everyone,
Hmm?
No Ant this week. Anyone know who this week's driver steward is?
Herbert
Nice
"I'm watching you, Schumi!"
Derek Daly said on the Flying Lap he would have banned Schumi for that... and that he is the steward for Monza!
Saw that. Loved the look on Maurice Hamilton's face when he said it.
:D
Oh I didn't see it - I only heard it ;)
By the way Gav, ace daily
:)
Thanks man. Have you guys checked the homepage? ;)
I saw you've gone all NASCAR on us
;D
NASCAR?
Morning.
What's this about?
The first post on your site
Herbert quote from last year
Ah that's because I'm supplementing Pat's TMR game with some summary posts. I'm going to resume doing short ones for Fantasy Racers this year and also another game which you will find out about later ;)
Don't think he said it, but he was the steward for Hungary wasn't he? Or was that Derek Warwick?
Ace.
That could be correct actually
Anyway, after a couple of days with a knackered Wordpress, here's a bit of race coverage:
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/2011-gp2-asia-race-of-italy-round-2-feature-race-march-19th/
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/2011-gp2-asia-race-of-italy-round-2-sprint-race-march-20th/
...a bit of comedy:
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/the-ongoing-lotus-court-case/
...and a bit of what of "what the...?"
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/explaining-the-2011-formula-1-rules-michael-schumacher/
Shame you couldn't have got those out last night!
Aye, but maybe they'll go on tomorrow's daily (whoever it is that does it)
I'm glad you linked to the Merc Video with Schumi in it - I decided not to in the end...
It is somewhat stilted. Almost like he has no idea what the new rules are!!
His English wasn't as good as usual in that video. He kept saying 'News' instead of 'new' for example...
Aye - it sounded like he hadn't spoken English for some time alright
Still can't fathom why Yamamoto has joined virgin. Are they really in that bad a shape?
Simple: Lots of cash for the team who are highly unlikely to have to do anything other than give him a couple of shirts, caps and the like.
he probably hasnt even had a seat made
I think it is quite simple. He is not expected to drive anyway but brings some cash in. What does Virgin have to lose ?
I have a feeling he'll in Friday morning
well, on the other hand, with Virgin looking to be this season at similar place where it was last season (although perhaps with a bit smaller gap) there would be no harm to let him circle around in FP1 in exchange for some $$$ ... not having Glock and/or d'Ambrosio in the car in all practice sessions may have more positive effect on teams bank balance than having them ...
aye - but lack of time in the car can also be costly
in case of Lotus, FI, STR, Sauber probably yes, in case of Virgin perhaps not really ...
Any word on motorsport.com from the Joe'rs?
I dont know why i am so interested, im not that bothered, but so much #mystery
Nowt yet as far as I can see
No chance yet
haven't asked yet
Ooh, Amy, how many people are there?
It showed up on Joe's site yesterday via Mr C, but no response.
Lots
Ace!
Good stuff.
60-70 maybe
A healthy number for something like this I suppose
Place is full, more than last year
That is good.
Awesome for Joe!
Morning all. Has anyone else seen the new format for Classic F1 on the BBC website yet?
Not yet. What's it like?
Hi Kate,
Not been on the Beeb site yet
Stuart Codling just tweeted this: http://f12011.autosport.com/
I think he wrote it?
:(
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2011/03/welcome_to_the_first_edition.html
Drivers pick their own classic races. This weeks its Vettel and his choices are, well...a little self-centred.
Rrrrrrrubbish! Asking drivers to do that is basically asking them to pick 5 races where they did well. The selection sucks!
Wow - like F1 started in 2008.......
All bar one of those races suck!
Benson said in the comments that some drivers did pick races they weren't in - I think he knew that it was a pretty rubbish selection too!
I could just about excuse only picking races he was in if he'd actually picked good ones. But 3 (arguably 4) out of those 5 were not classics in any shape or form.
schumacher will choose austria and indy :)
I suggest the BBC just get Karun to pick all the classic races
:)
The best race there was probably Monza 2008, but even that wasn't that good. Abu Dhabi 2010 - give me a break!!
Well with 19 (probably) races, some drivers won't get to pick anyway. I wonder how they decide that? Throw away the most rubbishy selections? I'm guessing the rookies probably won't get a pick.
Morning all.
Did it not?
I tell you, this site looks very odd on a derelict PC.
More a polishing/updating/fact checking job but it took a while...
Monza I can understand, given that it was a special win for him, and at least it wasn't a totally boring race. But Japan 2009 & 2010? Both of those were absolute snoozers.
Abu Dhabi was my "arguably" one - it had the surprise result but it was a rubbish race.
For a driver Like Rubens or even the schu it makes sense to choose from their carrers, but not young guys like him.
There is always the possibility he didn't understand what he was bing asked
Which was very odd, given how Suzuka is a classic circuit and usually gets a 'by' when people are complaining about how modern track strangle overtaking.
That reminds me,
Mr C, It might be just because i am in chrome, but if i click twitpics or youtube videos, nothing happens, no new tab or lightbox
Benson will justify everything and proclaim he is right. He's totally uncompromising and doesn't care one iota what the viewers want as long as he looks clever. I would wonder if this move is to try and deflect criticism of modern F1 and to kill off the classic F1 idea because they think it's too expensive to upload and convert old races? Shame really, I'm only interested in the pre-1996 stuff...
Agreed.
I've noticed that, but I'll be the first to admit that I thought the races at Fuji were better than Suzuka in the past few years.
2009 was a dire race, plus it had that comment from Rubens / Jock Clear that made me very annoyed
What comment was that?
I think the race was so dire that I've blocked most of it from memory, the only thing I remember was the ridiculous number of pitstops that Webber did.
looking for it now
I do feel sorry for Benson, F1 fans complain an incredible amount. I dont think anyone doing his job would be praised by F1 fans at all.
To be fair the BBC F1 website is pretty unnececary, Classic F1 should really be on the FOM site not on the beeb
Oh, and ALG having a big shunt. But apart from that, the only thing I remember was that it was boring!
Amen to that!
I'm not sure that he helps himself sometimes, but I do not envy him his job at all.
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/fuelled-to-the-finish-updated/
"A funny thing happened during during the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix at the wonderful Suzuka circuit.
Just before his first stop, Rubens Barrichello was following Kimi Raikkonen and gaining some ground, when he contacted race engineer Jock Clear on the team radio and asked “…do I try to pass him?” Clear responded only a moment later with “…don’t bother, we’ll just get him in the pits…” and it irritated me greatly, because as a viewer, I felt robbed of a potential battle. It was obvious too that Barrichello wasn’t even attempting a move – he was simply sitting tight to the gearbox of Raikkonen and it annoyed the hell out of me."
I would feel sorry for him but I don't like his attitude. He asked me to send him an email with my criticisms of the website, to which he replied with a complete rebuff and then a big spiel about not being able to compete, having limited resources and how wonderful Eddie Jordan was. That's not what I call 'listening to the fans'
Agree 100%
We do, but we should be allowed to suggest and criticise as well.
i can't think of another editor with such a public profile.
He goes on TV and everything! I do agree that he gets a lot of stick, but he can't say that he listens to the fans/readers/viewers and then rebuffs them. Look at the comment in the Classic F1 post - he hangs on to the small number of commenters that support him and tells the others to take it or leave it!
Oh I agree that his attitude does him no favours at times. I was just saying that however he tried spun it, it was clear he knew that it was a rubbish selection too!
I think thats because most of the writing on the BBC is done without a byline
All quite amusing since when AB left his position as GP editor of a certain MAGAZINE he devoted his final column to slamming the door on his way out of F1, dissing all aboard the sport for being self-absorbed twits.
I agree - he can't change the choices for fear of being accused of interfering so he is stuck with them. I don't think Vettel was a great choice for this though - Karun or Lewis or Alonso instead?
hehehehe! I didnt realize he used to do that job
I guess that explains why he included the line "The love affair has blown hot and cold" in his BBC bio :D
Oops!
Ha! I would dearly love to read that column...
He left not long after I started so it will be somewhere in 1999 if anyone has a stack of back issues.
Anyway, must toddle. I have a baffling series of stats to assemble and this old clunker of a PC ain't helpin' none.
Cheers Stuart :)
See ya Stuart
Hope everything goes well.
I'm a bit too young for 1999, but thanks for the tidbit! Bye Stuart.
Possibly not the best move in such a tight-knit community.
Cheers,
Great work on this by the way http://f12011.autosport.com/
West Indies are 112 all out in the Cricket, which is sad because (a) I just went there and (b) I have them in the office sweepstakes!
I was kind of expecting Classic F1 to be killed off, simply because for a lot of the circuits, the classic races have already been done. Provided the ones already converted are made available via the search engine, the only thing we lose by dropping the feature is the collection of classics from the handful of circuits that have more than 10 (5 in the case of Montreal).
Isn't it hard to search for them? Someone on F1 Rejects has linked to them all in a forum page, I don't know what else there is out there...
:D
Any news from the Joe evening yet?
You can find the links by looking through the blog archive.
The 2009 forums are still around too, but I think you have to use search engines to find them.
I'd guess the same - unless one of those rookies suddenly rocks F1 by performing unexpectedly well. The Hispania drivers may not get to have their selections heard either.
comment test
No, that's a good sign as it must be too interesting to look away from to comment :)
damn thing got stuck
indeed
Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between the F1 timing apps please? http://badgergp.com/2011/03/free-live-timing-f1-app/
News all good from Joe re motorsport.com and they have been dropped. Amy will probably explain more later
Ace
Had a good chat to Joe after the event, explained a lot about Fernandes etc
...and to think I'm in an office "working" when I could instead be in Australia not working - boo me.
What are you doing there :-)
Must sleep, up early tomorrow for track walk
Lamenting whether or not I have money for a trip to Monza
Good night and enjoy the sleep and track walk
:)
I have to go too, I'm being sent olive oil shopping by my Mum.
Nice to talk to you all again :)
see ya :)
see ya kate
here I am with more:
Joe said that motorsport.com approached him and offered him a deal, and part of it was that they wanted to go away from GMM and move towards being a more legitimate website, and of course Joe liked the idea of getting rid of a little piece of GMM on the web. Sadly it's only taken them two days to go back on a whole bunch of things they promised so GP+ told them to **** off (Joe's words :D ) and now all the motorsport.com stuff has been removed from the magazine so if you re-download it it ain't there.
He also said the three identical air asia ads were a mistake, they were meant to be three different ones but they only provided him with one :)
oh and he said he saw mr c's comment but didn't reply to it as he was transitting in Dubai and was short on time.
Cool.
numbers were up about 30% on last year Joe said, so he will be back.
On the other hand Singapore was cancelled last year as he only had interest from six people :(
Thanks Amy.
I'm not totally convinced - I am not sure why he trusted Motorsport.com.
See this is what happens when you end up trying to be the fastest - you sacrifice quality as a result...
Wow, excellent!
I feel it may be a while before enough interest beds in to make it really work in Singapore.
Was that deliberate?
he said that due to the new tyres and things things this year the more experienced drivers might do well. Schumi might win, and "Rubens might win one too" Maybe he though Lukeh was there.
I don't this particular case has anything to do with GP+ trying to fastest, the failure is on AirAsia side (by the look of things) ... not surprised actually, I know how hard it is to get proper artworks from clients on time ...
been there, done that - it can be like pulling teeth at times
No, of course not. I guess Air Asia sent the wrong ones and didn't correct them in time?
Maybe not ... my Dad has worked with making adverts ready for print and there are very tight deadlines...
I agree with that.
I can't find them on the search engines either :(
BBC search engine is rrrrubbish!
Probably
Karun's 1st column for ESPNF1: http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/43786.html
Joe didn't know which tyres were which colours. He obviously needs to listen to the song.
This one? http://sidepodcast.com/post/i-can-sing-a-sidewall-a-song-for-pirelli'
Very helpful ;)
DC is confused as to why Melburnians hate their own race so much :)
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/grand-prix-2011/coulthard-miffed-at-melbourne-residents-grand-prix-hate/story-fn7q3txe-1226026592731
Living in the land outside the real wold
Pop down to Queensbridge square at Southbank - Melbourne from tomorrow to visit us at the F1 Fanzone. Team Lotus drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen will be there tomorrow from 1pm for a public signing session
But I'll be at the track at 1pm! Gah!
Plus we are offering 30% off AirAsia X flights and giving away a ultimate prize package to the Korean GP – but only if you visit our marquee at the F1 Fanzone!
Gah! Maybe I should leave the track...what's happening at 1pm....hmm.....
That's a real shame because they have the potential to be a real rival to Autosport.com, if not necessarily in terms of on-the-ground reporting but for things like reporting press releases and announcements and providing opinion pieces.
(I have now decided that I cannot be bothered with olive oil shoping and have postponed until tomorrow, so I'm still here)
Try googling. I just did "Spanish Grand Prix forum BBC" and found it as the 2nd link on the page.
1pm at the autograph stage is red bull, 1.30 is mclaren, i'd rather go see heikki in a place that's probably less crowded than the lotus autographs at 5.30 will be and try win a trip to korea. into town it is!
Oops!
Mega oops! Shame on you, motorsport.com.
I mean I can't find them with anyone else's search engine either.
It's coming up "Page Not Found". I think it's my end of the connection that's gone wrong because half the internet's done the same thing to me today...
Thank you! I've finally found something Google is better at finding than Yahoo! and Ask :D
We need 2 Amys...
There is an ' at the end of the link that shouldn't be there. It should work when you delete it.
right, somehow its 12.20 and I'm getting up at 6.30, tomorrow is going to be a very, very, very, very, very long day. I might not go straight to Eddie Vedder as I may die if I don't come home and nap.
Bye bye all :)
RIP Liz Taylor
:(
Cheers for the Joe updates.
Ferret takes train from London to Edinburgh
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-12820220
(or just so happens to appear at the same time as the London train..?)
Don't know where that came from?
I didn't realise it was Budget day today.
This caught my eye: Fuel duty to be cut by 1p per litre from 1800 GMT
:)
Amy, you're a legend for giving us a Joe update. Sleep well!
it took me an extra 30 minutes to shower and round up all i need tomorrow. Tickets, cameras, flag, lotus stuff to get signed, free programme voucher, Heikki hat, phew! Now to sleep for real!
go team amy!
thanks you.
Some videos on tyres:
Pirelli explain the characteristics of each compound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyInar4mMUA
and Nico Rosberg explained them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyInar4mMUA (I had forgotten how different his hair is now)
Just to add to my computing woes, the new splash screen thingy at the start of formula1.com's site throws my browser into a tizzy :(
Nice. Non-watered-down-fuel will now only cost £1.40 a litre where I live...
Afternoon all.
Bleh. Just been reminded of something I was supposed to finish and send to someone three days ago, but forgot to do.
Hi Stuart
I know that feeling - I've got some typing to do tonight
"AT&T WILLIAMS LAUNCHES NEW MULTIMEDIA CONTENT FOR 2011"
oooh, interesting...
Afternoon guys.
Hi Lukeh
Stuart,
Are you still about ?
Hither and thither. I've been catching up on that which is late, and getting ready to transmit
Nay sweat then - I'll leave you to it
:)
I'll have sent it in a minute
Okay, back now (sort of)
I'm just wondering what is the general consensus (from those in the know) regarding Romain Grosjean? Was that Asia Series title worth anything at all?
Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff...
General consensus is that there are other drivers who are just as quick, if not quicker, and who are much less of a pain in the backside to work with. Note how many times his services have been dispensed with - he couldn't even hold down a drive in that crappy Ford GT. He is altogether too high on his own supply (although that's a common complaint).
Fair enough,
cheers
:)
:) :)
I thought it odd he ended up in GT.. and then out again.
Comes down to there being more to the craft than simply being quick. Lots of people can drive a car quickly but not everyone can get the best out of it (and the people running it) all of the time. If your crew think you're a prat then they're less motivated.
Biggest prat of all on that front has to be Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who had a huge shunt in practice for the DTM round at Brands (2006?). Crew worked all night to repair it and of course the car wasn't perfect to drive afterwards. Frentzen then complained bitterly to the media about how bad his car was. Well managed, son!
Joss Ackland's Grapevine is about to go live, by the way.
Oh dear - what gratitude!!
I see what you mean
Hello everybody I hope everyone is super excited...
Was wondering if anyone will be joining the autosport fantasy f1?
Hi Konstantin
Haven't looked at it to be honest
Have you joined it in previous years?
Not Autosport's. Thinking I might do Manipe's this year though
We have 75 people in our league at http://www.fantasyracers.com/
ooh, i gotta pick a team.
Yeah I forgot what the name was, I was in it a couple of years ago.
Full details on how to play and sign up http://sidepodcast.com/post/fantasy-racers-2011
We were very late starting this year and there have not been so many Debrief shows so we only have the third biggest league and that just isn't right. So the more the merrier
Right folks,
I had best split - may be back later. Anyone know who's doing tomorrow's daily?
have gone with lewis, vettel and nico.
Should be Pat. Alex did last week
Grand job. Cheers.
See you's later folks
:)
I picked my team last year, and then didn't swap anyone round all year. despite selecting the option. I actually have no idea where I even ended up :)
there's nooo time!
I might have a go at this Fantasy F1 lark this year. How do I join the Sidepodcast league though?
Don't forget your TMR Picks too! http://toomuchracing.com/2011/03/21/tmr-game-2011-week-9/
steven wrote a post: http://sidepodcast.com/post/fantasy-racers-2011
That's not a smart move. I've seen a few do that in different series. It's a really good way to make sure your guys don't do an all-nighter again.
I literally just found it :)
This is pretty impeccable timing on my part as I've finally got around to fixing the Pole Poll... For some reason when I was building it last year I think I neglected to remember that that there would be another season next year.
Yes!
No, but I think I might do the competition to go to Abu Dhabi, if it is still running. I suppose in the current climate that applies to both competition and race..
Me.
I'm cutting back on games I'm entering this year for exactly this reason. I'm doing my own, plus one on email, plus perhaps one other which may well be Manipe's.
Danke. :)
Oh and the pole poll, I'll do that definitely :)
:)
Hehehe, easily done :)
Yeah, loved that one ;)
I understand the VivaF1 quiz may be back tonight
indeed! :)
I meant to do it, I think lack of reminders from a certain podcast didn't help ;)
downshifting.
ohhh yeah. I had forgotten that happened. seems such a long time ago.
We were never going to do reminders though. Far too complicated.
The game got too complicated for me though. Or too simple with the 'leave it alone' 'fire and forget' model.
I just want to pick a few things in about five minutes every other Thursday.
Klien has joined Aston Martin's LMP1 team
http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/le-mans-klien-completes-amrs-lineup/
Woot. Lamy out next please. :)
they asked us what we wanted, so we all told them, and they implemented everything.
life lesson #1 - don't ask, do.
:)
Should've split it into two games. Or ignored us. :)
Look how disorganised I was... I forgot to post the link: http://sofaf1.com/2011/03/23/sofa-f1-2011-championship/
Yay!
I feel like I've done a lot today for a sick person... Having done that 2011 pole and everything... But then I look at my little Mac Book Pro on my international tracker and I find it's flown all the way from China to Germany! ;)
ooh, 13" or 15"?
15" :)
w00t!
As Jennifer Aniston might say, "here comes the science":
15-inch MacBook Pro
With the following configuration:
• 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
• 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
• 128GB Solid State Drive
• SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
• MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
nice. the challenge now is to make the most out of all of that.
Exactly... One thing though is that I doubt I'll have issues with buffering due to the machine being unable to save the video fast enough :)
ooh yes.
So here's the question... If it's in Germany now... Does that mean it will be in London tomorrow? I hope so :)
So how long am I going to have to wait for a Thundercat drive?
lacie have one ready to roll don't they?
oh, nope: Available Summer 2011
I don't think it's out actually right now though... Although I'll wait to see how much I need one at first.
I have gone out on a limb with the pole poll. I have decided McLaren have sorted their problems now that they have gone for a more conventional exhaust and Ferrari and McLaren will be as fast and slightly more reliable than RBR. Besides if everyone predicts Vettel where is the fun in that?
Can anyone guess who I picked for my first time winner? I don't think there will be a new winner this year so I picked the one I would like to win. All these years of trying to be rational and dispassionate and I still end up picking drivers the way Lou does. Except they are not Jenson.
I heard when you use it you have to go 'Ho!!' or it won't work.
:) :) :)
:)
Who cares about Logic :)
Giggles you've gone all Fantasy Racers complicated with your pole poll this year ;)
Mr C... I think Alex Lyndsey yesterday mention an app that was something you were asking for about a year ago. It's a way to make sure you always see your calendar without having it be your homepage in your browser:
http://www.blotterapp.com/
It's actually exactly the same rules as last year, I know this because I copy and pasted :)
The only new feature last year was the Maiden winner which turned out to not count for anything. And other than the Maiden winner thing it's been the same since the start 5 years I think. The only other difference last year was the drag and drop which hopefully makes it easier.
I think it's one of those things where it is far easier to do than it is to explain :)
i did? ooh, i'll try it out.
I think you were saying you were getting annoying trying to remember what was coming up. Maybe you fixed the problem by downshifting? :)
Well you are right because I just did it;)
You weren't getting annoying, you were getting annoyed.
i think christine learned to keep reminding me :)
Let's not be too hasty with comments like that.
It's funny because every year somebody says, "I can't believe you changed the rules". But of course the game is pick the top 10 for the championship, the most poles for the championship, if there's a maiden winner, and the top ten and pole sitter for each race.
All of the rest of the gubbins is how the scoring works which I guess most people don't care about :) I think over the course of the season everyone forgets how it actually works and stuff and just plays :)
:)
Nice one Giggles
And good evening
Hello all. It's days like today that I love living by the sea. Beautiful walk to work this morning along the front and lovely sunset this evening. :)
heya Janna, can imagine it's been absolutely lovely there :)
Sounds fantastic
It has. Had lunch by the sea too. Just the right temp for me, sunshine but not too hot.
Loving the Daily message on the homepage.
Evening Janna
Hello, are you enjoying your time off?
Very lazily, yes :)
Evening :)
Yay! Was beginning to think nobody would see it!
Tidily pom pom pom :)
Oooh I think the sea would still be a bit cold ;)
At least it was there. On Monday when I walked home I couldn't see it at all. Super moon & spring equinox tides.
What do you mean the seabed hasn't invented underground heaters yet? They can get them from football stadiums :)
Fish hot tub!
Just found a video of Paul di Resta aged 2 years 8 months in a kart on the BBC site
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/9411143.stm
I might try out Opera 11, is it any good?
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/australia-2011-race-information
Ahh its good to see the race info back :)
it's still dark outside. Natures way of telling me i should still be asleep!
Morning Amy, happy Heikki Day!
helps a little with the fantasy racers picks.
Can i please ask Thursday's daily writer to add a wee reminder about sidepodbreakfast, Friday 1030 at 2 Doors Down, Fitzroy St, St Kilda? Thanks :)
That's Pat W!
And a small reminder for the big event starting tomorrow...
That will be the Portugal Rally starring a certain Finnish guy....
VivaF1 Quiz is back in 13: http://www.vivaf1.com/quiz.php
And hi people.
Urgh. Who ever decided to start a gp day thus early
Okay
Yep it'll be in the roundup of this week's races.
Merci beaucoup....
Or Kiitos?.....
Evening :D
I'm back from Leicester safe and sound. I'm also rid of my mother :P
What did you think of the uni?
How was it?
Ken Block reportedly crashed heavily in Shakedown and taken to hospital, both are ok.
I decided to go to Southampton :D
It was really nice actually but seeing it helped me to decide that I really liked Southampton.
I guess he is used to having lots of tarmac to slide around on and not so many trees
Perfect outcome then. They convinced you to move further away from your mother
It can be a nice place if you do it right.
Never move to Shirley.
Gotta be an Airplane reference in there somewhere
:)
Hehe I'm very happy. I'll go and confirm it all on the computer tomorrow probably. Best not do it now as I'm pretty sleepy and probably will end up cancelling my application or something :P
Make sure you click on the right button
Almost at the track :-)
Give Crofty our love if you see him :)
Hiya. Have picked up G3 fanvision. Now waiting to start the pit walk.
Heya Pamela. New gadget!
I think there ar a million people waiting for the pit walk
I think there's a ninja goat at my house...
Are they unique to your part of the world?
I think so. This one would have done the SAS proud.
It was one of several that escaped the compound it was in. My parents were chasing after them for an hour. All but one of them were rounded up when they spotted the last one going up the path to the upper fields. It reached the top of the path and jumped to the left, barging through hedges, fences and saplings alike. It hit the bottom, coolly gave Dad a "bet you can't do that, you weakling" stare and disappeared into the night.
We still haven't found it and reckon it will try to sneak back into the compound at 2 am or something.
Sounds like a talented goat
Dad thinks it should go to boot camp - either it will make an excellent soldier or it will be shot for insubordination, and we're not sure which is more likely right now.
:D
G3!!
ooh, how is it?
Enjoy! :)
Does anyone have (or tried) the official f1 app on an android? If yes, is it any good?
Not sure if its worth the quite astonishing £20
Am fairly sure it's pretty similar to the iPhone version which is great.
5 sessions per weekend x 19 doesn't seem too bad if you average it out per race
I told my classmates that I was celebrating my birthday by getting up early to watch FP3 of the Grand Prix and I think a couple of them thought I was slightly mad (fortunately the teacher understood, having a brother who once worked in Ferrari's logistics department).
Hey folks,
just in for a brief hello
:)
Hello Leigh
hi bassano
Has tomorrow's daily been sorted per chance?
Pit walk is ace! I always love this part of the weekend :)
Haven't seen Pat in a while, he's probably working on it
Maurice Hamilton is in the commentary box with Crofty for FP1, 2 & 3
I'm actually busy working on a Moonpig card for my sister, except I can't find a decent one. Have kind of given up on shops so thought I'd try this.
Moonpig is the best name for a site ever.
dilemma! Go say hi to Heikki at 1 or try win paddock tour? I think go see Heikki quickly then come back and try to win
You answered your own question
Hrt still have "your logo here" on the car :-(
Squashy!
Ooooooooh dear
And no parts that I could see
oops
How attractive to sponsors............
May as well say "50% Off"
'closing down sale' might be closer to the mark.
I was thinking that too
it's wednesday right? did i miss spanish wednesday?
Ace!!
Donde esta Spanish Wednesday?
Amanda said she wouldn't have time
have decided not to go to town as lots more chances for Heikki autographs this weekend.
ahh, phew. missed that, cheers.
Right folks - must split
Goodnight
:)
G'night Leigh
How and when are you planning to catch him?
my god i hate monopoly.
See this is why hermann tilke was onto something with hotels
just. oh.my.god. I remembered that i shouldn't play it... but i forgot why... now i see..
hehehehe, aww. so competitive :D
What properties did you have?
all the yellows, all the stations and an orange... One of my flatmates had basically all the others.. and another just had the 2 awful ones with hotels...
they've got to the stage where no one can buy houses anymore cause the banker has none left! :o
ahh, lehman brothers.
Woohoo for the two brown ones! Even with hotels they are a bit silly.
Note to self - invent Deal or No Deal Monopoly...
Booo who ordered rain. Was that Bernie again?
yes. very much so. i managed to survive until i hit old kent road with a hotel and 2 houses on... *cries* My friend even gave me his properties!! :o
I just like buying the train stations in monopoly. I have no idea why, they just rock.
i was the f1 car and everything..
Least you were the best piece thingies and won in that aspect :)
hrt are also only using 2 of the 3 garage spaces allocated for them. Maybe their interior set up isn't big enough to fill it all.
Are their sponsors in customs?
you're taking this defeat in your stride :)
never underestimate the competitiveness :)
i didnt demand they play foals to calm me down or...refuse to take my car off the board or anything....
nope.. am not competitive.. not one bit..
remind me never to play monopoly... ever ever again.
*writes down for future reference*
So, anyone for scrabble?
i can do that.. but i suck at spelling...
Perhaps you could invent a special version to help where you can use words even if they don;t exist
'Ytrsgjhms' - it means to eat slowly, of course. 145 points.
Early night attempt
Bye folks
night Bassano
Night Bassano
Lou have you seen amy and pamela's twitter feeds tonight at all?
no. have been too busy loosing..
That might cheer you up :)
hehe
boo for protected accounts.
Pamela saw Rob! yaay!!
http://plixi.com/p/86351293
Ahh am so jealous. May need to skype Pamela after this weekend to get all the gossip! soooo jealous. gosh i miss F1! :)
w00t!!!!
:)
This time tomorrow we'll be waiting for fp1!
well.. i'll be sleeping.. but yaaaayyyy for F1!!
you're not live commenting it?
yeah course!! i'll be up at 1:30 :) but i have lectures alllllll day on friday, plus a trip home. So... the only time i'll get sleep is before FP1.. and in between the sessions.
ahhhh, phew. you can't invent live commenting and then sleep through your own anniversary.
I just can't wait to hear a track with F1 cars again to be honest, more than anything. The sound of even just McLaren's jenson was awesome enough.
I'm just relieved there's a "Your logo here" - I was worried there was going to be no car in Australia with some of the talk I'd heard!
it hasn't run yet :)
I bet it's a cardboard cut out
Ooh - you've given me an idea for that! (Just let me have a while on the computer and then we can discuss percentages...)
True. Eek.
I thought that was cheating (in that the maximum was 4 houses or a hotel)?
They might not have enough stuff to warrant using 3 garage spaces.
Some would also say taking money from the bank is cheating too, but me... :)
aww no i couldn't sleep through FP1 if i tried. i've been getting really bad withdrawal from this amazing sport for weeks!! The worst withdrawals i've ever had. Just hearing a bike speed down the bypass made me happy earlier... desperate isn't the word.
Do i get anything for my anniversary? ;)
the boys play a brutal game.
hugs?
I'm sure he was quite animated
;)
hugs plus a list of photographers? ;)
This is not any old hug, this is a Mr C hug
oh my god, i forgot. it was top of my list! lemmie look now.
hehe! i did try to remind you in the comments yesterday. you need a post it note.. ;)
Can I suggest the forehead as a suitable location for such a reminder?
i do. i missed the comment, sorry. email coming your way.
Picture of the pitwalk from nat:
http://yfrog.com/gybhjetj
holy frickin crap!
rammed!
Even spa wasn't that packed. mental.
:D
I think it was where Gavin went near McLaren, but Albert Park is a much wider pitlane
yeah the McLaren and Ferrari garages et all were pretty rammed but the whole pitlane there looks absolutely jam packed!
It was crazy
You survived! :)
Just got a tour of the 2008 mclaren. Love that car
Barely!
the Bathurst one?
That was the 2009 one
Yep. Love it. The guy showing it was useless though
Hmmm, that's not what they said. It was defiantly the 2008 I saw
me thinks it's time for bed, night all
YESSSSSS!!!! flatmate just said he'd bring his 42 inch TV into the kitchen so i can watch practice tomorrow morning. he even said he'd wake me up so i dont miss it! the other flatmate said he'd watch it with me... and they've said i can watch the races on it too... so i don't need to always go home. ahhhh <3 my lovely flatmates :)
night Lukeh!
I read somewhere that they used the 2009 car but a few other sites say it wasthe 2008
See, no worries :) told you they'd agree, awesome news!
You have them so well trained
Does sidepodcast get any money if I buy any of the merchandise?
They get something from it but I don't know how much
That must have been at the maximum. It wasn't that packed for us. This year is definitely busier. I think it's because pit walk is usually on Wednesday afternoon.
hehehe! It's taken me an entire off season, but i managed it :P They even want to keep the kitchen clean now. :)
pit lane wasn't that packed when we went down. I was the only person at lotus for ages!
i'm not sure how much either! sorry.
Moonpig ate the card I spent ages working on, bah
thank you! :)
Like roughly, I would assume 10%...
really no idea. christine does that kind of thing. as she's never mentioned it, i would guess the correct answer is 'not enough to make much of a difference'.
cafepress things are on our list to do and the amazon affiliate stuff is there because we like stuart and joe. if we sell a couple of copies for them, they might keep talking to us :)
bad piggy :(
someone just asked me if i got my Heikki hat here today. No, you shoulda gone to Monza lady! And because i am the only visible lotus fan I've seen here it seems only proper that i win the paddock tour on twitter.
daily will be later and shorter than planned
no worries.
The next step would be getting them to comment here. :D
you get so much you're not sure how much you get, eh? :D just kidding. ;)
morning, mr c.
Sorry for being a pain and asking about costs heh are the podcasts the most expensive part of the website?
I think i may be able to get one of them to.. he's my super geeky flatmate (the one who loves font and things...) he's excited to see the telemetry etc... plus actively wants to watch practice :D
1 day till FP1!!!! :D just one whole day!!! wohooooo!!!!
right and with that, i must sleep. See you lovely people in the morning/ afternoon! xx
did you get the VIP treatment, then? :)
hehehe. :D
People ar the BBQ can't seem to work out how to light it. Lunch may be late
i would say, so little, i forgot we get anything :)
He sounds like he just needs to comment. Set the FBFB and realtime up on his laptop and he won't be able to stop himself
only proper, indeed. :) when do you know the winner?
Night Lou
problem is he only has an imac.. so it's in his room...
and by only i mean it's the largest screen i have ever seen... ever..
was it mr c who loves fonts? either way, looks like he'll fit in here juuust fine. :D
I am sure that can be moved into the kitchen as well
Just what you need
his tv is technically bigger. but i know what you mean.
other flatmate has the large TV.. but the mac lights up the entire room! :o anyways. must get sleep xx
crazy, but true! :D
Night, Lou!
don't know any details about it at all other than to watch twitter between 1 and 2
Its reallllllly raining now :-(
Who do I need to follow? ;-)
It's 1 PM in 20 minutes... Really hoping you win it. :) If only to make fun of those who toured you round at Virgin at Monza. :D
Presenting via Flickr...
F1 Monopoly - Deal or No Deal Edition!
Hmmm coulthard and ricciardo ate driving megannes in the rain
I love that. Although the Honesty square in an F1 game confused me. :D
That is one of the Sauber team's squares, and of course refers to Peter :)
I like that
oh please please please let me be one of the first to twee that hash tag!
ooh it published when i wasn't ready, you back away :)
post go away i mean.
ready in a minute
You may be in luck. Twitter Search says you were second. ;)
All done. :)
Ping - http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-24th-march-2011
And I managed to get it all in after all.. (apart from finding a song but let's not worry about that)
