Friday is here, and that can only mean it is Free Practice day in Hungary. Now Free Practice is usually the least exciting day of the race weekend, and if you multiply that by being at the Hungaroring, we're not expecting much. Still, the weather is supposed to be nice.

  • RG created a great quiz last night called: "Which F1 Driver Are You?" It's a couple of pages of questions but well worth a few minutes of your time. Apparently I am Jaime Alguersuari, which is typical as I can't even say his name. If you haven't already, take the quiz and let us know who you are.
  • Ollie has written a good post about the naming conventions surrounding US F1 - if that is in fact what they are really called. Am also a fan of the title, as it looks like this could be the start of an occasional series. Yay.
  • Also, if you've not placed any bets on the upcoming race weekend, then you might be able to glean something from F1 Punter's latest two posts - Hungary for Success and Another Podium Possibility. The latter features Timo Glock, which will make the aforementioned RG happy.

That'll do it for now. Join us for live commenting throughout the day as we enjoy Free Practice, and let us know how you think the rest of the weekend will pan out. I'll see you in the comments.

    Mr C: A back-up Q

Do you use an external drive via Firewire & if so, which?

I need a new one, mine is getting noisy and am considering a WD but have heard mixed things about their Firewire enabled drives

Have two of their USB driven devices and they've been faultless so far

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:31

Do you use an external drive via Firewire & if so, which?

sometimes, but i don't recommend it if you have a mac laptop, because the firewire bus doesn't have the power to run to blooming things unaided (at least not reliably).

heard great things about drobo, if you have the budget.

I think this might be contraversial... But.

Listening to Murray commentate on the old 80's hungarian GP's...

    ..And he isnt very good...

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:36

    ..And he isnt very good...

    in what way?

  • lou23/07/2009 at 23:38

this photo makes me giggle a lot.. :) just cause it's something i would do..

    Finally!

Someone who agrees with me, I really don't like Murray as a commentator

I can see how he's a legend but the bumbling fool thing really gets me goat

    [Sorry Gavin]

  • Andy Taylor23/07/2009 at 23:38

    ..And he isnt very good...

    Uh oh.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:38

    in what way?

He was just calling stuff wrong.

His style was as great as always, but he was just calling drivers having a look as 'he's gone past'

maybe im a bit out of context, i haven't seen enough of f1 in that era.

But i know if it was JA or JL calling that they would have been crucified on the forums

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 23:39

this photo makes me giggle a lot.. :) just cause it's something i would do..

I think I'd just stand back and admire my work, then laugh :D

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:40

He was just calling stuff wrong.

he did that a lot. but paired with hunt, it was a great combination.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:41

No, this would be fixed next to my iMac. I have a portable external also and will get another soon (WD TV Media is awesome BTW)

Used to have a Lego brick Lacie until it fell off the side of the coffee table :(

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:42

he did that a lot. but paired with hunt, it was a great combination.

    I love Hunt, great commentator.

I dont mind murray making mistakes, but confusing something, and just calling something plain wrongly is a bit different?

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:43

Used to have a Lego brick Lacie until it fell off the side of the coffee table :(

oops. the desktop lacie's are fine, although christine says her's is noisier than her old WD.

any reason you don't want to use usb? unless your recording audio/video i can't tell the difference.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:43

this photo makes me giggle a lot.. :) just cause it's something i would do..

The nozzles on those last four on the right aren't aligned. That wouldn't happen in a McLaren garage ;)

  • Andy Taylor23/07/2009 at 23:43

He was just calling stuff wrong.

    It's what he's famous for!

To be fair though, the information he had in front of him would have been minimal compared to today's live timing and multiple camera angles. Murray and James didn't always travel to the races either.

Could you have done a flawless job based on the frankly poor TV coverage?

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 23:44

It seems DC is getting surprised very easily now he's retired...

  • Andy Taylor23/07/2009 at 23:44

any reason you don't want to use usb? unless your recording audio/video i can't tell the difference.

I'd stick with USB too unless you are using the drive for video or audio.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:45

any reason you don't want to use usb? unless your recording audio/video i can't tell the difference.

I transfer large files (1GB+) between HD & External

Ripping Bluray and 720p video ends up with super large files

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:45

Could you have done a flawless job based on the frankly poor TV coverage?

Probably not but Murray took it to another level

  • Andy Taylor23/07/2009 at 23:46

Ripping Bluray and 720p video ends up with super large files

Might be worth going for Firewire then.

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:46

I dont mind murray making mistakes, but confusing something, and just calling something plain wrongly is a bit different?

    yeah, but he's irreplaceable.

he came back and commentated on 5live in 2007. the race was nuts, the worst possible thing for murray really, and he didn't call very much right. but i loved every minute of him and would've listened forever.

i don't care if commentators get things wrong, so much as i don't want them to be annoying nor condensing. allen was both, legard is just dull. murray was never those things.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:46

Could you have done a flawless job based on the frankly poor TV coverage?

I am not complaining about mistakes...

I am just saying i am seeing something and hearing murray describe it differently...

Allen and Legards problems both lie in delivery, but i think technically they are way ahead of Murray. People seem to remember him with rose tinted glasses, myself included.

Had the web been around then he would never have survived

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:46

I'd stick with USB too unless you are using the drive for video or audio.

    I am

My current 1TB USB drive will switch to Time Machine

The new one will be my new external media storage

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:47

I transfer large files (1GB+) between HD & External

    ahh, okay :)

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:47

Ripping Bluray and 720p video ends up with super large files

Might be worth going for Firewire then.

In your personal experience, are WD firewire externals the same as or no worse for reliabiilty Andy?

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:48

Allen and Legards problems both lie in delivery, but i think technically they are way ahead of Murray.

agreed, and i hate them for it.

People seem to remember him with rose tinted glasses, myself included.

    i don't. i know he wasn't as good as he could've been. but i still don't care.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:49

He was just calling stuff wrong.

he did that a lot. but paired with hunt, it was a great combination.

    That is true though

  • Andy Taylor23/07/2009 at 23:49

In your personal experience, are WD firewire externals the same as or no worse for reliabiilty Andy?

I've no idea, I use Toshiba USB externals.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:50

It seems DC is getting surprised very easily now he's retired...

    Classic!

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:50

i don't care if commentators get things wrong, so much as i don't want them to be annoying nor condensing. allen was both, legard is just dull. murray was never those things.

I find commentators missing things i can see or getting things wrong verry annoying.

But delivery could be every bit as annoying, under allen especialy.

I guess the Murray i remember didnt make the big mistakes, just the general confusion, so perhaps that is the best way to remember his work in the box

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:51

I've no idea, I use Toshiba USB externals.

I should just get an enclosure and buy a decent fast drive but...

That person would be too elusive

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:12

I disappear for a couple of hours and come back to find people slagging Murray. Shocking.

Yes he made a lot of mistakes but the two differences with modern commentators is he had personality to spare and the level of info availble. At times he was at the track with a small black and white monitor or in London commenting on the feed coming in. In a lot of cases half the track had no camera coverage an live timing didn't exist.

Apart from that he had to deal with Hunt who is the single least impressive human being I have ever met.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:12

I think the memories of him are better than the reality, pre 1990.

I suspect if we leave Legard in the job for a few decades i wonder if he might garner a similar level of affection.

    :D

  • lou24/07/2009 at 00:21

But Johnny Herbert will be good. Just seems ridiculous Ant has a drive and Johnny doesn't

it will be nice to hear him commentate... but i'll still miss ant lol

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:22

    7 hours 38 minutes 14 seconds

    http://www.formula1.com/

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:22

he won't. he used to commentate on 5live. we heard him again recently... still sucked a**.

But my point is, if you had murray as the new commentator now, for the first time on tv; Thousands of people, probably myself and most people here included would be complaining to the BBC several times a month!

  • lou24/07/2009 at 00:22

How long until the first practice session?

    7 hours 37mins :)

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:23

But my point is, if you had murray as the new commentator now, for the first time on tv; Thousands of people, probably myself and most people here included would be complaining to the BBC several times a month!

we wouldn't. you might, but we wouldn't.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:23

he won't. he used to commentate on 5live. we heard him again recently... still sucked a**.

Was he replaced by Croftie or Ant?

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:24

You guys are hard core, only 8 hours early LOL.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:24

Was he replaced by Croftie or Ant?

croftie, i guess. ant only started full time this year.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:24

But my point is, if you had murray as the new commentator now, for the first time on tv; Thousands of people, probably myself and most people here included would be complaining to the BBC several times a month!

But you are assuming he would be as bad if he had all the modern information. Modern TV pictures are so good that you can read the driver's name on the car despite them being tiny. There was a time when Murray was commentating that You could barely read large numbers

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:25

You guys are hard core, only 8 hours early LOL.

We're her 24/7. You can do it too.

In a weeks time we are doing 12 hours of live radio

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:26

F1 is behind the times broadcast-wise, anything other than pure HD is unacceptable. Crap, in the States they have the Big 10 Network for nothing but coverage of college sports in ONE division, 24/7 in HD.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:27

You guys are hard core, only 8 hours early LOL.

    Early and SPC?

    We only do;

    late night

    too late

    too late to sleep

    oops I'm late for work

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:27

F1 is behind the times broadcast-wise.

Bernie nees to emerge from the analogue age first

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:28

we wouldn't. you might, but we wouldn't.

Even if he had never done it before, all the memories of him didnt exist?

It is perhaps a bit hypothetical i know...

Highlighter is working again thanks Bassano (C)!

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:28

Funny I just looked at the F1 online store, they have a grand total of FIVE Red Bull items available for sale. Pretty crappy for one of the current top 2 teams this season....

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:29

F1 is behind the times broadcast-wise, anything other than pure HD is unacceptable. Crap, in the States they have the Big 10 Network for nothing but coverage of college sports in ONE division, 24/7 in HD.

We have had similar conversations a few times. It's the same with the internet access. F1 live timing is pathetic compared to the services offered by IRL, ALMS, Le Mans etc. Bernie is a dinosaur.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:30

Even if he had never done it before, all the memories of him didnt exist?

you're missing what i like about murray.

    enthusiasm.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:30

Highlighter is working again thanks Bassano (C)!

Tis a tried and trusted emergency method

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:30

    Early and SPC?

    We only do;

To be fair we are here late Thursday rather than early Friday.

The problem is the UK is the only country in europe which has reasonable HD service.

Even then, very few people here have it.

Europe seems to have gone for interactive stuff, whilst North America has gone for picture quality.

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:31

    enthusiasm.

Didnt James Allen have that though?

    (Before he had hand gestures)

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:32

The problem is the UK is the only country in europe which has reasonable HD service.

    Reasonable?

I have potential access to one HD channnel

I refuse to pay a premium for that

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:32

Didnt James Allen have that though?

    nope. he did faux enthusiasm.

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:32

Any weekend predictions gentlemen? Any news about this weekend out there, whose favoured, etc.? Here in Canada coverage is nil.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:32

I have potential access to one HD channnel

we have no access to any HD channels.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:33

I have potential access to one HD channnel

    BBC HD iPlayer FTW [hopes]

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:33

Didnt James Allen have that though?

Murray is 85 years old and has more boyish enthusiasm for the sport than any other commentator. It was quite amazing watching him at the ASI show. Bouncing around like he was 16.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:34

    BBC HD iPlayer FTW [hopes]

ahh yes. it's not really HD, whatever they claim it to be. but i'd take f1 in that format.

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:34

HD is pretty common here, not everyone has it, but all the sports are in HD. Everything from NASCAR trucks to poker. You haven't seen racing until you have proper HD and real multi-channel surround sound. NASCAR has it right for that....

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:34

Any weekend predictions gentlemen? Any news about this weekend out there, whose favoured, etc.? Here in Canada coverage is nil.

    It will be boring

    Not Seb will crash/spin off

    Piquet Jr will be fired

A Brawn car will do well

A Red Bull will be on the podium

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:34

Murray is 85 years old and has more boyish enthusiasm for the sport than any other commentator. It was quite amazing watching him at the ASI show. Bouncing around like he was 16.

he was trying to lose his minder when we saw him. not with much success admittedly.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:35

Everything from NASCAR trucks to poker.....

HD poker, c'mon... I mean, where do I start?

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:35

Any weekend predictions gentlemen? Any news about this weekend out there, whose favoured, etc.? Here in Canada coverage is nil.

It's a tough one to forecast. Weather should favour Brawn but we have to see what McLaren can do.

Amy will be pleased to know that according to AUTOSPORT that Heikki is to get all the new bits and will have an identical car to Lewis this week.

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:35

....not to mention the sattelite radio here has 12 different broadcast radio channels for every NASCAR race, a broadcast for EACH driver. Its crazy!

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:35

we have no access to any HD channels.

    You don't have a TV

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:35

Any weekend predictions gentlemen? Any news about this weekend out there, whose favoured, etc.? Here in Canada coverage is nil.

It is supposed to be warm, so brawn is in vouge, Jenson seems to be implying they might not have enough in the bag to keep up with the red bull upgrades. going by his previous statements this means a cake walk for brawn.

So far i have picked Piquet Jr to win it in a Williams (with naked pit crew)... dont know how that will happen mind you.

  • Lukeh24/07/2009 at 00:36

....not to mention the sattelite radio here has 12 different broadcast radio channels for every NASCAR race, a broadcast for EACH driver. Its crazy!

Yeah well we've got a channel called Dave!

    Dave!!

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:36

I hear Renault is running KERS for the rest of the year.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:36

we have no access to any HD channels.

    You don't have a TV

    true. but...

planning permission says no dish on the wall, so even if we did HDFreeSat is unavailable to us.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:36

Murray is 85 years old and has more boyish enthusiasm for the sport than any other commentator. It was quite amazing watching him at the ASI show. Bouncing around like he was 16.

As I said, a toatally decent chap, I just want him commentating

If he still was, I'd be on 5Live

    Hang on...

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:36

Yeah well we've got a channel called Dave!

    dont forget Dave ja vu!

  • Lukeh24/07/2009 at 00:37

    dont forget Dave ja vu!

    And Dave ja vu!!

    Dave ja vu!!

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:37

he was trying to lose his minder when we saw him. not with much success admittedly.

I saw him interviewed on the F1 Racing stand by Stuart although I didn't know it was Stuart and when the interview was finished Murray dived under the ropes and practically sprinted to his next appearance.

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:38

I wish Piquet Jr. would get run over or light on fire or something. Just seems like a real dumbass.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:38

Yeah well we've got a channel called Dave!

And the +1 (hour) version is called Dave Ja Vu

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:38

I hear Renault is running KERS for the rest of the year.

    News to me

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:38

I saw him interviewed on the F1 Racing stand by Stuart although I didn't know it was Stuart and when the interview was finished Murray dived under the ropes and practically sprinted to his next appearance.

yup. probably that was him avoiding the guy who's job it is to keep an eye on him.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:38

Poker in HD? we can top that... CNN shuts down early here so we can watch people play roulette.... without the people.

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:39

Poker in HD? we can top that... CNN shuts down early here so we can watch people play roulette.... without the people.

    wha?

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:40

what if we don't have a skylight?

    Seems?

    That's too kind :)

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 00:40

How's Alguersuari going to do this weekend?

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:41

    I have the same problem.

I also cant get Cable as virgin seem unable to work out what they installed a cable on my building for..

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:41

what if we don't have a skylight?

    Get one?

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:41

    He's "Not Seb"

    Not well, but I wouldn't either :D

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 00:42

    wha?

Try giving that tv a go before you take it to the dump! Channel 84!

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:42

    Get one?

are skylights allowed in buildings that don't allows dishes on the wall?

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:42

2nd corner will be an unimagined paradise, I fear

  • me24/07/2009 at 00:42

Try giving that tv a go before you take it to the dump! Channel 84!

    but, roulette without people?

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 00:42

How's Alguersuari going to do this weekend?

I think he will do OK. He is a decent driver but with no experience of the car, the team or F1. All he has to do is get to the end of the race for it to be a success.

  • lou24/07/2009 at 00:42

oh dear... how did that happen it's nearly 2am... i need sleep or i'll never get up for FP1 in the morning.

This is the clever bit. You build and Lshaped shelf that seals the window and just happens to have a dish sitting on it.

I thought you would have been Heikki.

I just posted a comment a few minutes ago you would like. According to this week's AUTOSPORT Heikki is getting all the latest bits this weekend so his car will be identical to Lewis's

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 00:54

    Is this an international holiday?

Windows support at current version 500k per year

how does it cost that much money to support one person?

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 01:46

Not much, just hanging out at work. Anything good about?

Just waiting for the Friday news

If Piquet goes off before Not Seb, he may be unemployed before Sunday!

    What happened?

  • me24/07/2009 at 01:48

3500+ users at 500k per person, right?

  • Aitch24/07/2009 at 01:50

I just finished the quiz and I'm Nelson Piquet. Now I'm gonna go hang my head in shame:D

Did you finish or crash out?

Well the picture at the end of the quiz showed the Renault up against a wall and Piquet walking away from the car, so I'm guessing I crashed out.

  • Joe in Fla24/07/2009 at 01:51

My Single Friend dot Com update:

    7 msgs sent, 5 unread

    Options:

Stop sending messages after 1am [possibly sending wrong signals]

Get friend to remove references to Ice Cube in profile (music, not acting) [undecided, though is a funny story]

If we didn't upgrade to latest version of SAP now, in 3 years the support costs would be higher than 500k by then

I learnt today that one transcationat a time may be the limit [Multi-tabbed browsing hasn't been tested yet {it runs in IE}]

[Currently, I have the option of 5 concurrent windows, plus the option of more external ones]

Do you really want to limit the coices of the guy who ensures the compliance of the aircraft you're flying on?

    Thought not

I don't have to provide tech support so, meh

    what now?

Over 100 custom written programs back in the day when our desktops were made by Ferranti. No one provided the software we needed

[We upgraded our machines to Windows 95 after that, I think]

    not iris scanning?

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 02:31

    not iris scanning?

To clock into work, no (chipped ID card)

To clear Immigration, yes. If registered [Saves time on return and every other departure]

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 02:32

Ferranti ended up being bought by GEC but at one time (before PCs) they were a huge electronics company but they made some bad decisions probably including being taken over by GEC just when the management consultants finally got control of the company after many years of telling them how old fashioned their thinking was. Turned a good company with lots of cash in the bank into a bankrupt shell in no time flat.

    I hate management consultants.

    Good evening everyone.

Just finished preparing dinner and letting the spaghetti and marinara sauce boil away.

A sidepodspace update for Steven Roy. Guess who we signed up to be a after dinner speaker for the first night of our annual meeting?

(wonders why KFC gravy never took off Here as it did in Asia Pacific)

very good question, indeed - it's a big hit over here. must be down to the spices. some countries have quite the spicy gravy...

  • Amy24/07/2009 at 04:17

one of my favourite thing to do in foreign countries is buy fast food not available at home. Kfc singapore had a burger with mushroom sauce. It wasnt as good as i hoped.

Which KFC in Singapore did you go to? We also went to one there - tried out their chicken. When even the original recipe is spicy, you KNOW you're not at home. :D

  • David Hammel24/07/2009 at 04:29

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm. Fast food.

  • Amy24/07/2009 at 04:42

i went to the one about 200m from the hotel where renault were staying in the rich part of town haha . I had strange foreign mcdonalds a few more times because it was on the walk between my hostel and the track

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/07/2009 at 06:37

    I wish we had a canteen :(

I'm tied to my desk at the moment, didn't bring any cash in this morning, all of the usual guys on my desk who are in at this time are on holiday so I can't borrow any cash. So the vending machine is just sitting there taunting me. I even have a £20 note, but no change :(

Didn't Renault stay at the Raffles? There's a KFC not very far from there, yes. Perhaps we went to the same one? ;)

There's also a McDonalds near Raffles. That's the one you went to?

he sure will be the busiest driver out there today, if he manages to keep the car away from barriers

  • Alianora La Canta24/07/2009 at 07:51

the gist of it was whether a registered charity should be chartering planes when there are perfectly good commercial flights available.

And there was no explanation proffered as to why a registered charity is chartering planes? That sounds odd - like the FIA cares more about looking good through the press than demonstrating to people it is spending its money properly and wisely. My guess is that Joe got given an explanation that he thought was a load of rubbish, or else simply threatened without any correction being given at all.

The FIA really needs to sort out its PR. As it stands, I am now convinced that it was wrong to charter a plane for this purpose and that it doesn't want people to understand the real reasons why it does what it does. A bad combination.

By the way, I did the "Which F1 Driver Are You" test and the answer was apparently Nick Heidfeld. Do I really have a huge beard?

Obviously - and a camp German accent!

5 mins to practice if my watch is correct

  • Alianora La Canta24/07/2009 at 07:55

DC is reserve driver for RB, let's hope STR is not the team that may actually need services of 3rd driver

I thought DC stopped being the reserve driver a few races back when Brendon Hartley got his superlicence?

  • Alianora La Canta24/07/2009 at 07:55

Obviously - and a camp German accent!

But I don't even know how to say a German sentence (unless "Hello" and "Goodbye" count)...

At least you are an original. I am one of several Webbers and there are several other multiples as well but you are the first Heidfeld.

I would have thought that Stepney would use the fact that Todt is standing to get his book published.

I'm amazed he hasn't self-published his account of events already...

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 07:56

But I don't even know how to say a German sentence (unless "Hello" and "Goodbye" count)...

That qualifies you for a Toro Rosso drive

  • F1Wolf24/07/2009 at 07:56

I thought DC stopped being the reserve driver a few races back when Brendon Hartley got his superlicence?

yes but then Jaime took over from Brendon and now Jaime races for STR, so back to good old DC

Are you sure? I thought the main qualification was being on the Red Bull driver programme?

  • Alianora La Canta24/07/2009 at 08:00

    That man needs a blog?

No he doesn't - if he had a blog, we'd be bored silly by how he was "hard done-to". At least with a book, only people who've paid him money will need to go through that.

  • Alianora La Canta24/07/2009 at 10:00

What do you plan on doing? I am interested now... :)

I am planning on taking everyone's predicted lap for each race so far, comparing it with their actual lap stopped on (excluding any races where strategy was altered, for example due to tyre problems). I can calculate the differences between these for each individual driver, as well as per track and overall.

I don't know if it will be possible to find a per-track pattern (though it would help if I could), but each individual driver could have their own modification of the F1 Yearbook figure, which should improve accuracy for the remaining races.

  • Nick24/07/2009 at 10:06

Here is a bad state of affairs - someone laughed at me just now for spending my weekend watching F1. He said you could take a nap between the first and last lap and it would still be the same.

This happens all the time, but today... I couldn't be bothered to defend it.

    F1 = fail.

    Rugby: Egg chasing

    Golf: ball walking

    Cricket: Organised sunbathing

Probably the people who think work should be drudgery - or one big practical joke.

Seriously, if you want anything important doing in a business (and it's a Monday-Friday 9-5-type business), do yourself a favour and avoid anything after lunchtime on Friday!

Seriously, if you want anything important doing in a business (and it's a Monday-Friday 9-5-type business), do yourself a favour and avoid anything after lunchtime on Friday!

It's a Monday-Friday 7-7 type business. Friday afternoons are even worse if you've been in the office since 7am.

I never book meetings on a Friday afternoon. Another part of the group invited me to these two meetings and then it was explained to me that I wasn't allowed to decline. An interesting new definition of "invite".

The 4th spacewalk of the STS127 mission has just started

They are scheduled to change 2 solar array batteries but they will have to do 4 as the last spacewalk was cut short.

They are also going to transfer a cargo containerfrom the station into the shuttle bay using the main station robotic arm.

That reminds me of a joke I saw in Reader's Digest a while back. A speaker went to a meeting of some company. His first words to the packed room were, "I can't find the words to describe the number of you here."

From the back of the room, a clear voice replied, "Mandatory".

    Really... all 4.

But there are differing versions too...

Therre's an extended version of Die Hard with a couple of scenes replaced *but only in Black and white as they were never completed* and there's 2 versions of Die Hard 4.0 - Theatrical and Extended. I prefer the theatrical cut. Extended is a bit messy.

There's a Danish Football player in a coma because he got hit by lightning during training the other day...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)24/07/2009 at 15:48

    Alia, do you still want help updating your Fuel Fing? Because I have a spreadsheet with data containing all the 1st pitstops in races not affected by a safety car… {Comment #526}

That would be great. Admittedly, I'd have to copy the values manually from drop.io to PDA, but it would be a huge benefit to me.

    Thank you very much :D

Here you go Alia - no sense in doing the work twice.

Feel free to use anything you want from it ;)

  • Flibster24/07/2009 at 15:49

Speed of sound is roughly 1100ft/s

So for every 3 seconds of gap between the thunder and lightning, that strike was roughly 1km away from you.

    or 5 seconds per mile...

#digest I have realised that Not Seb is now a guinea-pig for new drivers being introduced with an in-season testing ban. It's going to be very tough for him I reckon - F1 is a very steep learning curve...

Journeyer, Mr C and anyone else interested in Journeyer's question about how he should go about making his workplace more innovative I would be very interested in your thoughts on this that I happened to be listening to this morning. It's from the Stackoverflow podcast and somebody asks a similar-ish question about how do you go about improving the quality of your co-workers code. Joel and Jeff really are very good people to listen to for advice I think...

The question comes 50 minutes in:

Well code review is a good way to go... And there are lots of things you can do, in other podcasts they have talked positively about these things... Anyway you will have to see... Thought it was very interesting.

A sidepodspace update for Steven Roy. Guess who we signed up to be a after dinner speaker for the first night of our annual meeting?

I am so jealous. I guess being the only scientist who went he is going to be obsessed by rocks while all the others were obsessed with rockets

I am trying to work it so I am the one who picks him up from the airport and drives him the two hours to place we are having the meeting. If I get to do so, I will be asking if he could sign a copy of this photo and I will send it to you.

You can thank my unhealthy addiction to Sidepodcast. I lwas looking through the speaker book, saw him, thought of sidepodspace, then suggested him, I can't believe my bosses took him. They usually bring out some political hack from D.C. to speak about blah, blah, blah.

(BTW: Have we added blah, blah, blah to the sidepod-dictionary?)

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 17:37

I have been watching today's space walk for hours and one thing keeps nagging at me. If I was designing a space station with batteries that needed regular replacement I would have designed them so that the job could be done by a robotic arm rather than sending two guys outside to do it. The batteries weigh 367 pounds on Earth and apart from being bulky and awkward to handle in space they need to be presciselt lined up so that the cooling fins fit perfectly.

That to me sounds like a machine job rather than a manual job.

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 17:40

(BTW: Have we added blah, blah, blah to the sidepod-dictionary?)

    What would be the definition?

Not to point out the obvious...

    Solar power?

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 17:49

    Solar power?

The batteries are charged by the solar panels so that when the station is in orbital night they have full power.

    team orders

  • Dan Brunell24/07/2009 at 17:52

    What would be the definition?

    Blah-Blah-Blah

    n.

    a. Referring to another person, driver, organization, or team's lengthy excuses and/or explanations in a mocking manner. Usually expressed racing drivers and fans who are frustrated with a certain entity such as a team.

Ex: Fans are tired of all the blah-blah-blah from Renault for why Piquet still has a drive.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 18:03

I assume they are only good for so many charging cycles. As with anything in space we are not dealing with up to the minute or up to the decade technology.

Goood evening. How is everyone? The rain has gone and the sun is out and it is Friday - bliss.

I was playing "quickly scan through everything to catch up" when I should have been doing work in the office earlier, wasn't able to reply though.

    So.. housekeeping:

    - I absolutely LOVE Nick's Goodwood video posted yesterday. Such a brilliant idea to do a 'fan POV' vid.

    - I saw someone dissing the Kings of Leon and quietly shook my fist. Disappointed to hear they aren't good live - I like them, shame they got over-promoted so everyone got bored of them.

    - I am a Vulcan Mark Webber.

    - I can't remember anything else.

It is limited only in as much as I only deal with blame. If you want a pony for Xmas speak to Giggles. If you want someone to blame for the mess the pony made on the carpet that's my department.

He gets to give out presents and I have to deal with all the horse****

They are discussing the possibility of today's spacewalk being the longest ever. Originally it was scheduled for 6 and a half hours but was extended to over 7 hours to make time for swapping the batteries that were not don during the last spacewalk. The current record is over 8 hours and mission control have just reported that with the current carbon dioxide levels in their suits they should be good for 9 hours.

Something to keep RG happy. Ned Flanders reckons that the team now know what has made their car so awful this year and they can sort it over the next few races. Last year when he had a car that could have challenenged for the championship and this year when the car barks he wants to keep developing.

To be fair though, oval racing is so different to circuit racing, just because he's naff on ovals dosent mean he would be on circuits...

I haven't seen the Beeb's InsideF1 before. They just had Mike Gascoyne in the BBC News studio in London talking about Jaime.

Now Jake and Martin in the paddock - Jake can't pronounce Jaime's last name. Martin says he'll struggle on this track which isn't an easy one.

I really couldn't stress the car - had to slow right down, due to my tyres being exceptionally dangerous. Just didn't work on the surface. Could only get to about 7500rpm before the wheels started spinning - they're absolutely fine on the road though.

Allen and Legards problems both lie in delivery, but i think technically they are way ahead of Murray. People seem to remember him with rose tinted glasses, myself included.

I agree, but Murray has charisma in spades and a colossal memory bank of F1 info, even though it often comes out wrong.

Allen also has a lot of info but wants to be all Jackanory, telling us a story.

Legard doesn't seem to know anything and is just dull, dull, dull - though I did wonder if he is playing the role of newbie fan who doesn't know much, if he is, he's doing a terrible job.

Had the web been around then he would never have survived

You may say that.. I say James Allen proves you wrong. People were online clamouring for him to leave for YEARS.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 19:47

I stand by what I said at the time - it was based on observation. It was just plain wrong, that's all...

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 19:48

But you are assuming he would be as bad if he had all the modern information. Modern TV pictures are so good that you can read the driver's name on the car despite them being tiny. There was a time when Murray was commentating that You could barely read large numbers

I have heard commentators mention, not sure if it is F1 or other series (can't remember - may have been Martin Haven, he's never shy of a complaint on air), that the commentators still only get small screens to work with, so they don't see anything like as much detail as we see.

RDTCC news: Our Volvo team leader has had the Red Ring of Death on his 360 meaning he's out as team leader for a while it seems. Not sure if it'll be myself or Greg that will have to take over, we'll see. If we can get someone to fill the place, then he's said he'll drop to a reserve driver position while his 360 is off for repairs.

    So, Lukeh... ;) :D

Not when you get two meal breaks and 3x 15 minute breaks... honestly it was so cruisy it was never any stress anyways...

I am trying to work it so I am the one who picks him up from the airport and drives him the two hours to place we are having the meeting. If I get to do so, I will be asking if he could sign a copy of this photo and I will send it to you.

    Wow, that's great stuff Dan!

    Oh i do love this..

At 17:16 Autosport Report "New-spec GT1 Lamborghini unveiled"

Then at 17:19 Autsport Report "GT1 cars banned for 2010 Spa 24"

    ehehehe

    :D love it

What? GT1 banned from the Spa 24? What?? That's... No no no.. Sportscars is going all wrong.

Are "Your Sticks on a Wire"? ;)

    I don't know, I'll check.

No, no I don't think they are.

    "Your Tour's on the Pyre(nese)"

    That's... an interesting pronunciation ;-)

But after the media overload of the last 12 months I now prefer the Kings' earlier stuff to their later stuff.

There's a PC remake of the first MI game out now, with HD graphics and voice acting. Don't let that put you off, it's absolutely incredible, makes a classic game even better and brings it to the 21st century without losing what made it classic in the first place.

There's also a brand new MI game coming to the Wii and PC, yep. Although that's in episodic content rather than a whole full game...

All practise is interesting nut rarely amazing

  • Lukeh24/07/2009 at 21:31

Definitely the highlights. At the time I preferred The Who's performance, but I knew more of their stuff.

At the time, it must've been about 11pm and it was mega silent in my house, watching Pink Floyd with my mouth sat open in glee was quite an experience sat in the dark. I know Live 8 had absolutely NOTHING on Live Aid but that moment with pink Floyd will honestly be something I'll probably never forget, as cheesy as that sounds. Just seeing them back one more time knowing their history and from what I knew of them. I guess growing up in their era would've made it far more special but it was still a pretty amazing experience as a Floyd fan.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 21:31

Might give it a go. Doubt I'll be commenting over the weekend though, see how it goes.

But the Spa 24h is an FIA race and the rules are FIA rules, so what's the problem?

They're banned because Ratel wants them to have 2x 1 hour races after the 24 hour race...

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 21:32

But the Spa 24h is an FIA race and the rules are FIA rules, so what's the problem?

Because the FIA have started the world GT1 class, and have changed some GT2/3 rules and basically said "The ACO can take our rules if they want, but we aren't changing"

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 21:32

Because the FIA have started the world GT1 class, and have changed some GT2/3 rules and basically said "The ACO can take our rules if they want, but we aren't changing"

But how does that affect Spa? I didn't think Spa had anything to do with the ACO. Surely they can still lump the GT1s in with the GT2s.

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 21:40

Very easily done.. they should have given the new one a new name. But sportscar class structures have always been monumentally confusing.

  • Flibster24/07/2009 at 21:41

He has limited movement in his arms and hands. He was very close to being a quadriplegic iirc.

    Yes

Last year they had a very prominent Red Bull cartoon on the sides but this year they put more emphasis on promotion rather than the graphics. I seem to remember I was the only one that like the Toro Rosso livery last year.

    ahh, that's okay then :)

are you watching all of fp1/fp2?

  • lou24/07/2009 at 22:10

    hey, i remember that!

somehow i thought you might do.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:11

Yeah, I'm idly watching FP1. Might go to bed rather than go for FP2 but I'll see how I feel.

i was thinking.. while at goodwood actually, christine hasn't had the best luck with being outside at f1 related events... I remember reading that during your first trip to goodwood she got fuel fumes in her eyes (ouch!). it's a wonder she follows the sport after all it's put her through, tis real encouragement to get us through these tough f1 political times.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:16

All the drivers (except Alonso_) have said Jaime is too young and inexperienced to be in the F1 car this weekend. I think it will be a miracle if he finishes. Everything is stack against the kid - slow car - no experience - a tough track - and hopefully (for the Brawns) it will be hot and the race is longer than any he has competed in before plus the pit stops not to make a miss of.

I heard what Lewis said on the radio about an hour ago though and he wasn't mean, he just said it was harsh that he'd not even been allowed to test.

Lewis has been quite polite but also said it would have been a disaster if he had attempted to race without testing - I htink he is one of the more sympathetic drivers.

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 22:24

just want to make a point though... Jenson had a whole off season of testing before he got in the car for a race... he had even driven an f1 car round a corner :D but i've also read interviews with JB where he has said he felt he was too young for f1 but as the opportunity appeared he couldn't refuse it.

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 22:25

    (Another) question....

When teams talk about "abandoning this year's development" and "focussing on next year" and whatever, what benefit does it really have if there's no regulation change?

Surely without rule changes, next year's car is largely this years with development? Working on this years, helps next years?

  • me24/07/2009 at 22:27

When teams talk about "abandoning this year's development" and "focussing on next year" and whatever, what benefit does it really have if there's no regulation change?

    a) good pr.

    b) changes to the length of the car will make a small difference and apparently they're getting longer.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:28

Surely without rule changes, next year's car is largely this years with development? Working on this years, helps next years?

Some car, especially those with KERS will have to be redesigned to accommodate the bigger fuel tanks since there will be no refuelling next year. In this year's Ferrari the tanks were too high to accommodate the KERS as low as possible and it was some of their problems.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 22:28

    a) good pr.

    b) changes to the length of the car will make a small difference and apparently they're getting longer.

Is that because of the increase in fuel tank size with the refuelling ban?

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 22:28

    a) good pr.

    b) changes to the length of the car will make a small difference and apparently they're getting longer.

and longer = (generally) longer wheelbase, which makes it stable, but more prone to understeer.

i believe last years Ferrari was alot longer than usual and it did really well in the high speed bits but struggles at tracks like monaco with lots of chicanes etc

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 22:29

    a) good pr.

    b) changes to the length of the car will make a small difference and apparently they're getting longer.

Is this because of the extra weight from carrying more fuel?

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 22:29

Is that because of the increase in fuel tank size with the refuelling ban?

    ah, snap!

You think The Mirror are bad, look what I just found from AUTOSPORT about Danica looking to move to Ganassi:

Ganassi also praised Patrick's IndyCar season, where she currently ranks fifth in the standings, ahead of his Andretti Green team-mates Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Hideki Mutoh.

mwaha, i love things like that. i once emailed the Formula Palmer Audi website because they had called their only female driver the son of one guy and the brother of another :D

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:31

Just to add this in, but it occured to me earlier that refueling ban won't cut as many costs as I thought. I mean, they're still going to have to lug the refueling rigs around between races to fill the things up in the first place/get the fuel right for qualifying.....

  • Lukeh24/07/2009 at 22:31

    KERS is banned next year

The FOTA teams have agreed not to use KERS next year- it has not actually been banned. No one will be using it though.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:33

We've talked about this before. There's no need for high flow fuel rigs

No need to keep developing them I suppose, but surely it's a huge piece of equipment?

  • Jon Waldock24/07/2009 at 22:33

The FOTA teams have agreed not to use KERS next year- it has not actually been banned. No one will be using it though.

Ah ok, well same difference, no-ones going to have to design a car for KERS and big tank if no-ones using it

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:34

We've talked about this before. There's no need for high flow fuel rigs

You can use gravity feed rigs which are way simpler and cheaper.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 22:34

They can fill up the car with a funnel if they want [probably]

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:36

    Williams & FI?

I think they would like to get back into FOTA - large fuel tanks and KERS not a nice combination.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 22:36

If Concorde Agreement is signed, FOTA may not be required

  • Pat W24/07/2009 at 22:37

We've talked about this before. There's no need for high flow fuel rigs

Don't they already only use them for the race and Q3?

Also, do the teams own them or rent them from that company who's name I've forgotten? I mean, if they own them, they'd want to keep them hanging around for the inevitable rule change for 2011.

  • Bassano Clapper24/07/2009 at 22:37

That is and always has been an excuse. When they say we kept developing last year's car and this year's suffered it means they did a lousy job. The idea that you can't do both is nonsense.

Also when they say they are giving up on this year's car it meant they did a lousy job. Basically BMW Sauber have a completely different car now that at the beginning of the year - had to design two cars for 2009 and both were rubbish.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 22:46

Depends how you split your resources

Ferrari won 5 consecutive championships albeit with a little assistance. McLaren have three separate development teams. The team that designed last year's car started work on next year's two months before this year's was launched. The team that designed and developed this year's will switch to the 2011 car at the end of the season.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 22:50

Not sure if that's due to them having V12s when everyone else had V10s but I seem to remember that

It is part of their history. Enzo Ferrari thought the only part of the car that mattered was the engine and the engine had to have 12 cylinders regardless of whether or not that made any technical sense. How he succeeded is beyond me because the guy was an idiot. He thought that Lotus developed ground effect because they couldn't make 12 cyinder engines.

Had he really been the leading light in F1 we would still have 12 cylinder front engined cars.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:51

Traditionally, Ferraris were always gas guzzlers

The one that is going to guzzle fuel with be the Coswworth according to Williams - the modern V8 F1 engine all use much the same fuel although it is rumoured that both BMW is a little more economical. They usually go a lap longer than predicted.

  • me24/07/2009 at 22:52

They usually go a lap longer than predicted.

the renault too. hence why the rbr switch rumours don't add up for me.

The Cosworth must be thirstier unless they are allowed some development before the season starts. The enfines are so closely regulated now there can;t be much between them

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:53

There is little more to it - it is true Enzo was not complementary about the small light rear engined British cars - but tracks were also changing.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:53

the renault too. hence why the rbr switch rumours don't add up for me.

Except that they blow up? How many smoky engined RBR's have we had so far?

Strangely, I don't remember the Renaults doing the same

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:54

The Cosworth must be thirstier unless they are allowed some development before the season starts. The enfines are so closely regulated now there can;t be much between them

I do not think there is much - although last years Honda was down on power and flexibility compared to the other engines.

  • me24/07/2009 at 22:55

Except that they blow up? How many smoky engined RBR's have we had so far?

they don't blown up much in the renault. newey likes his tight packaging, does he.

  • me24/07/2009 at 22:56

When you said FP2 was better, is that because there's no commentary for the end of FP1???

ah yeah. that happened. it comes back.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 22:56

There is little more to it - it is true Enzo was not complementary about the small light rear engined British cars - but tracks were also changing.

If you look at any part of F1 history the guy was living in the past. In the 80s he refused to drop the flat 12 engine so the cars couldn't get proper ground effect. In the 50s he was about last to move the engine behind the driver.

Almost any time you can look at he backed the wrong horse. If there was a choice of two ways of doing something he was on the wrong one.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 22:57

It is certainly tighter than the Ferrari - I think the Merc is the best engine followed by the Renault.

  • me24/07/2009 at 22:57

    best, maybe. but most efficient?

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 22:58

When you said FP2 was better, is that because there's no commentary for the end of FP1???

We lost commentary for a chunk of FP2. They introduced a Peter Windsor interview and we lost commentary and came back as they said thanks Peter that was interesting.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 22:59

I did get it back. It was refreshing to actually hear the radio conversations without commentators talking over it.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 22:59

The Merc can be packaged tighter because it doesn't create as much heat. That is probably why Red Bull are trying to get their hands on some for next season.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 23:00

    best, maybe. but most efficient?

It is the most reliable which is one aspect of efficiency. My inside knowledge suggests that is very flexible so the car is easier to drive than other cars. Remember in Motorbike Ducati superbikes were not the most powerful but they had immense grunt out of the corners and this allowed they to dominate over the other teams.

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 23:02

It is also apparently a little bit lighter so it will offset the need for the larger fuel tank.

    formula mercedes?

Rumours only by about 4kg - but it is a very good engine.

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 23:06

Joe did say they had hired a lot of Cosworth guys so it is like going back in time. Of course the two guys who founded Ilmor which became Mercedes engine operation were ex-Cosworth

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 23:08

I think that is why they are so good. If I were a new team I would be unhappy about using the Cosworth. BMW keep saying they want to supply their engines to another team - but no takers.

  • Alison24/07/2009 at 23:09

It's just something about BMW in general I think. Nothing particularly wrong with them, but just not that interesting....

  • Rich24/07/2009 at 23:11

Kubica has gone through a good few this year and was lucky that some don't count.

i'm starting to think that if i were ever to meet someone from brawn i'd freak them out so much they'd run in the opposite direction... maybe i should try find out about other teams too... just to even it out...

actually considering they are from the team... and i assume they wouldn't sit in on meetings etc, maybe it is the woman who was interviewing Nico?... maybe ask Joe? wouldn't he know?

actually considering they are from the team... and i assume they wouldn't sit in on meetings etc, maybe it is the woman who was interviewing Nico?... maybe ask Joe? wouldn't he know?

yes, but that wouldn't occupy very much of your time, or expand your knowledge beyond brawn...

it's on the website, Jenson and Rubens mention them in interviews, in press releases... but they all have names and photos... how am i meant to find out the identity of someone who is anonymous? hehe

  • Steven Roy24/07/2009 at 23:40

If you'll take photography, F1 has a corps of photographers. Psych is a VERY flexible course - you can go a lot of ways with it, and I'm sure more than one way can get you into F1.

  • lou24/07/2009 at 23:49
