Thursday is upon us already, and the only way to sum it up is the day between the F1 Digest Preview, and the F1 Digest Free Practice show. However, there are some interesting things rumbling along in the F1 paddock, and here's what we're talking about:

  • There is more politics to devour, and as I am still desperately trying to cling on to my F1 happy place, all I can say is that the FIA Foundation aren't big fans of Vatanen and easily jumped to the defence of Todt. So, does that make Ari's task just that little bit harder, or is this an expected hurdle?
  • Renault are opening their doors to fans for an open day, which includes tours of the factory. It's first come, first served, and more details are available here. It looks like a pretty good day out, and if anyone gets to go, we want pictures.
  • It looks like Ferrari will lose their head of aerodynamics at the end of the year, with John Iley leaving the team. He joined in 2003, and apparently it is a mutual decision.

That's all for now, I reckon. It must be about time we started keeping an eye on the weather, thinking about predictions and pondering whether the Hungaroring will produce another new winner. I'll see you in the comments.

This Renault factory tour thing. Now I wasn't sure about suggesting it earlier but... sidepodmeetup perhaps?

  • Bassano Clapper22/07/2009 at 23:06

I used to go to a bar in Sydney whilst backpacking. It was a gambling joint mainly (poker machines) so not visited much by non-gaming addicts

They did have a buy-one get-free-drinks token every week before 11

    We called it Tirsty Tursdays

[It was a predominantly Irish household]

Another great reason why Thursdays are dear to me :)

  • Jeremy22/07/2009 at 23:06

I predict that Mr Todt will win the election instead of Mr Vatanen. This is NOT what I want to happen.

I'm not even sure it's legal

I find it envelopes you too much into the aural world and distracts from the focus required for [London] driving

BT headsets don't shut out all external noise like in-ear headphones tend to do

Also, mono seems to be easier on the concentration somehow

Also, mono seems to be easier on the concentration somehow

hmmm. not sure i agree, but i should check up on the law before the morning :)

in-ears are better because they shut all the distractions and let you focus, no? even if i'm not playing music, just having the foam in helps i think.

eheh. find me the law that says i can't then. i double dare you.

If you are in an accident and proved to be wearing headphones they will argue that you were driving without due care and attention. Bluetooth headsets for phones are only in one ear. Even Leo doesn't put his podcasts in stereo so that people running, cycling etc have one ear to listen to the traffic.

Leo says stereo earphones are bad. That is better than any law.

someone said the other day that it's illegal to drive barefoot, but i know that it's not because i had an argument with a nice officer who once tried to claim that it was.

i sometimes drive barefoot and sometimes wear headphones. neither are illegal though, and i'd argue neither are less safe.

  • Steven Roy23/07/2009 at 02:05

I am sure it is butcan't prove it.

Your memory is not doing well today. He asked a few weeks ago if people would like stereo podcasts and quite a few people in his chatroom gave the safety argument so Leo decided that was a really good idea. I think he puts the mono down both ears but if you ar doing something dangerous you don't miss anything by having only one ear listening.

Just stating that it's not the law but getting points on your licence still isn't nice. The due care & attention thing will often be used after an accident, though you could be driving with headphones for years without grief

i have big feet. in cars with a small footwell, barefoot is safer than hitting two pedals or side of the air ducts.

i quite like it actually. especially on longer journeys.

i was gonna ask how you planned on getting it home.

I have moved cars short distances barefoot and it is really uncomfortable. I have no idea how anyone can drive properly barefoot.

It's better than race boots! I find I have to sit closer though. Nice alloy pedals help. You very quickly get used to it and hate having to wear shoes

  • Jeremy23/07/2009 at 04:52

when my boss says "we are pretty quiet today do you want to go home" i find it hard to say no. Especially when it means i can avoid the after work ikea crowd.

is this for morale? Or do they pay you less?

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 05:33

is this for morale? Or do they pay you less?

its because they work out how much work is being done compared to the amount of labour hours being provided and if productivity is too low because theres not enough work to do they try and send people home. It's illegal for them to force us to, but my love of not working usually wins out. Any hour I'm not there I don't get paid, or I can take it as annual leave but I'm not a fan of frittering that away an hour at a time.

    Morning all,

How's the weather where you are today?

I'll describe the local weather for you in RonSpeak:

"The levels of participation at this moment in time are similar to those of the canine and feline species..."

  • F1Wolf23/07/2009 at 07:14

How's the weather where you are today?

sunny warm and not that humid, only some 75% (that is considered mild over here).

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 07:20

Here's a post from the Irish guy who dislikes statistics

Interesting stuff ... nice to see IRL has a silly season too. Although I must say that I thought his post might have been a bit complex and dry. Dry to the point that I couldn't really fathom it as it was not speaking to me in a language I understood... ;)

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 08:06

How's the weather where you are today?

Sunny but not hot so far.

Gotta share this one with you - I was reading an article on the CAR Magazine webiste about the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, and in the comments section someone has added an absolute gem:

"Is this car any good? Cause I don't see many around..."

    :D

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 08:25

"Is this car any good? Cause I don't see many around..."

I really don't like Internet Explorer. My computer is currently suffering from a suspected progressive hard drive failure (second time in 18 months!), which means I've got to use Dad's computer for the internet until mine is behaving itself again. The trouble is that this version seems to be even pickier about what it loads than my computer on a bad day and struggles to run even two windows simultaneously (which could be a pain in the neck tomorrow when I ask it to run three windows at a time, one with about eight tabs...)

  • Alianora La Canta23/07/2009 at 09:14

The FIA Foundation's behaviour is completely expected, since it's staffed largely with the incumbent's choices (i.e. Mosley appointments). What is especially expected is that it didn't bother to tell us what Todt was really doing, which tells me it either assumed that only Ari would be interested in the contents of its letter (very strange, given FIA precedent) or Ari was a lot more right than the Foundation on this matter. Whether the NSA delegates figure out this inconsistency is another question entirely.

Here’s a post from the Irish guy who dislikes statistics

    From that article:

"Franck Montagny is at the top of the list to replace [Danica Patrick] at AGR. His performance at Le Mans this year was stunning and that was despite driving with a broken leg sustained in training camp 3 weeks before the race. He was consistently faster than Bourdais in the number 8 Peugeot and his talent has been criminally overlooked by both the F1 and IndyCar communities."

    Interesting...

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 10:21

Also our council introduced/delivered a new recycling thing today. Basically, you put your waste food into a mini bin thats no higher than your ankle, wnd when that is full, it goes into a larger waste bin, which then every week goes into another bin to be put outside.

I'm a bit unsure/amused why we have 3 bins to do this....

There are several other devices like 2 legacy iPhones, multiple legacy laptops and computers that need to be connected from time to time. But as I say, I may be unusual :)

They've been running on the same weekend for more than 50 years now, at least. Why change it? Many an F1 driver skipped Monaco at least once to race at Indy - and some of them won there (like Graham Hill and Jim Clark).

I found out there is a DIY sandwich shop here with 150 different ingredients and you can put whatever you like in it, and they charge you by weight. Considering the problems I have making decisions, it might be best if I never go there.

Mr C might like it because the way to make something high priority is capitalise the first letter of the task. That would mean that he would never have to make anything high priority :)

Yeah I remember when I used to work at the Appliance Store. Printers are just not worth fixing if something breaks...

  • Flibster23/07/2009 at 12:19

Yeah I remember when I used to work at the Appliance Store. Printers are just not worth fixing if something breaks...

Unless it's a really serious printer, they're disposable.

My colour laser printer is a disposable one. I paid £120 for it, and a complete set of toners is £90.

Unfortunately, it's going to be a pig to replace cheaply as it's got parallel, usb and ethernet connections on it.

Exactly... but often with electronics out of warranty it usually costs half as much as the list price to fix the damn thing, so you may as well get a new one...

They are the Brawn GP at Goodwood of pastry shops.

Ok maybe not THAT wild. But they always have mega queues because they are mega.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:35

wow... a pastry shop that always has queues?...are they that popular then?

Ok maybe not THAT wild. But they always have mega queues because they are mega.

i have never even seen a Greggs shop.. maybe they haven't discovered this region of Kent yet... i'll stick with neros anyways, vegi pastry options are always lovely...

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:38

She would never get into trouble for anything. she is blonde, tiny, and knows how to cry...

ok. but the answer is yes.

apart from her being a blonde, there is no law against it.

    There is sort of.

Your argument could be extended to say there is no law against drinking and driving...

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:40

    never! no wives allowed!

    Kimi is married?

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:40

    There is sort of.

it wasn't you who tried to tell me driving barefoot was illegal too was it?

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:41

    Kimi is married?

to a former Miss Scandinavia of course

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:41

Tempted to buy the new Brawn GP flag...

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:41

it wasn't you who tried to tell me driving barefoot was illegal too was it?

Nope i was totally arguing it was legal!

Mark Webber has a contract for next year according to SSN

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:42

to a former Miss Scandinavia of course

Wow... their conversations must be... riviting

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:42

so what's the difference with this then? it's another urban myth and there's no law against it. same with the shoes thing.

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:42

Mark Webber has a contract for next year according to SSN

    Autosport says it too.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:42

Do you have a flagpole? then we can declare the republic of brawn?

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:43

I shall have to contact Danny Wallace to get advice on such a stupendous idea

about the only time she has ever smiled. every picture I have seen of her in the paddock she is scowling. I don't think she's been to a race in over a year though.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:45

so what's the difference with this then? it's another urban myth and there's no law against it. same with the shoes thing.

I think its a lot more dangerous...

I can completely control a car with bear feet. It doesn't hinder me.

But having headphones in means you couldn't hear cars in our blind spots, horns, sirens, people screaming e.t.c...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 12:45

    Mmm salty licorice!

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 12:45

What if I have headphones in and can hear that stuff?

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:45

I think its a lot more dangerous...

fair enough. i think the opposite.

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:46

What if I have headphones in and can hear that stuff?

    you need better headphones?

  • lou23/07/2009 at 12:46

no idea if it's been mentioned, and it's hardly surprising but Mark Webber has been resigned for 2010.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:46

about the only time she has ever smiled. every picture I have seen of her in the paddock she is scowling. I don't think she's been to a race in over a year though.

Haha, Kimi looks like he is in a boyband!

    She won miss scandanavia? 8O

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:46

But having headphones in means you couldn't hear cars in our blind spots, horns, sirens, people screaming e.t.c...

    What about blowtorches?

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:47

But having headphones in means you couldn't hear cars in our blind spots, horns, sirens, people screaming e.t.c...

what about those who are profoundly deaf? do they make for more dangerous drivers?

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:47

    She won miss scandanavia? 8O

    in 2001 apparently

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:47

What if I have headphones in and can hear that stuff?

You dont know if you are hearing everything for sure until it's too late though!

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:47

    What about blowtorches?

    i always check before parking.

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 12:48

    you need better headphones?

Not necessarily. Even ear plugs don't cut out every single noise ever. How can a policeman prove that I can't hear anything?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 12:48

about the only time she has ever smiled. every picture I have seen of her in the paddock she is scowling. I don't think she's been to a race in over a year though.

So he looks like a grumpy stone and she has a perma-scowl ... the perfect couple!

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:49

Not necessarily. Even ear plugs don't cut out every single noise ever. How can a policeman prove that I can't hear anything?

true enough. i can hear sirens over a podcast, but it doesn't matter because i can see them anyhow.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:49

what about those who are profoundly deaf? do they make for more dangerous drivers?

    Defiantly...

I am quite surprised they are allowed to drive without some sort of alert system in the car...

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:49

true enough. i can hear sirens over a podcast, but it doesn't matter because i can see them anyhow.

*i can't see the "sirens", obviously.

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:50

    Defiantly...

    that is utter BS.

I am quite surprised they are allowed to drive without some sort of alert system in the car...

there is no proof to back that up. complete and utter poppycock.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:51

I am quite surprised they are allowed to drive without some sort of alert system in the car...

I read somewhere that deaf people make excellent drivers because they are super-alert to visual cues when driving, far more than hearing people are. It's illegal for deaf people to drive in China apparently.

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:52

    Defiantly...

that's very harsh me thinks. Their sight is still perfectly fine.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 12:53

I am quite surprised they are allowed to drive without some sort of alert system in the car...

They can still see the hazards and 'feel' quite a few sounds too... Yuo could still drive deaf right?

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:53

I read somewhere that deaf people make excellent drivers because they are super-alert to visual cues when driving, far more than hearing people are. It's illegal for deaf people to drive in China apparently.

    That is true.

Deaf people couldnt drive when i grew in dubai, so i wasnt aware they could here until just now.

  • me23/07/2009 at 12:53

I read somewhere that deaf people make excellent drivers because they are super-alert to visual cues when driving, far more than hearing people are.

i believe that is true too. may have to dig out some resources later. i don't have time now, but i think nick is 110% wrong on this one.

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:53

If they have good eyesight that qualifies them to drive I mean, just seems unfair to diminish deaf drivers just because of their hearing disability when it's more than likely they'll depend moreso on visual events far more so than the average driver after adapting to their lack of hearing...

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:54

I should really read that someone says the same thing but 100% times better before my own comment :D

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:54

Deaf people couldnt drive when i grew in dubai, so i wasnt aware they could here until just now.

" According to the World Federation of the Deaf, at least 26 countries do not allow deaf citizens to have a driver’s license"

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:55

i believe that is true too. may have to dig out some resources later. i don't have time now, but i think nick is 110% wrong on this one.

Maybe, I just assumed they didnt drive and I know i use my hearing when i drive a lot, especially on the motorway.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:55

They can still see the hazards and 'feel' quite a few sounds too... Yuo could still drive deaf right?

I think I could drive deaf easier than I could drive with headphones in. I really really didn't enjoy doing it. I don't care if other people do though.

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 12:56

The UK driving agency says of profound deafness: "Need not notify DVLA. Till 70 issued/retained."

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 12:57

i believe that is true too. may have to dig out some resources later. i don't have time now, but i think nick is 110% wrong on this one.

I should add i didnt want to offend anyone, the concept just seems quite strange to me...

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:58

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 12:58

Heck, Mythbusters even got a blind guy to drive, so it shouldn't be a problem if you are deaf then...

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 12:59

    I have a strange question...

Can you get swimming goggles that allow glasses wearers to still see with them on? I really want to go swimming... but without my glasses everything is, quite literally, a massive blue of colour :( it's rubbish swimming where you can't really see anything which I know sounds pointless when you're crashign in and out of the water as it is, but it's not particularly nice.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:59

Heck, Mythbusters even got a blind guy to drive, so it shouldn't be a problem if you are deaf then...

When I was 16 I had the hearing of a 40 year old. I'll totally be a deaf old lady.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 12:59

yep, I have seen prescription goggles at my optometrist.

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 13:00

not if you're careful with earphone usage and ear protection at the GP's...

  • lou23/07/2009 at 13:01

do you think she is providing useful feedback on the circuit?

aww! he said he walked the track with Shov and Mike.. so maybe she took the photo?...lol

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 13:01

do you think she is providing useful feedback on the circuit?

    Hehe.

I still prefer Rubens' Mr happy pic for the Brawn walkabouts today though ;)

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 13:02

not if you're careful with earphone usage and ear protection at the GP's...

everyones hearing decreases with age though, so I am careful but I don't hold out much hope for my 80s.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 13:02

yep, I have seen prescription goggles at my optometrist.

Yes, i know somone who wears them.

I belive you can also wear contacts under goggles

tell me about it. i don't swim as often as i used to because i get really awful headaches when i've nothad my glasses on for a period of time :(

  • Journeyer23/07/2009 at 13:02

do you think she is providing useful feedback on the circuit?

I'm sure she gives Jenson quite the detailed feedback. ;)

Or maybe she just needs a good exercise? That said, Jenson tends to do better when she's around, I think... We shall see if I'm right this weekend.

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 13:02

Or maybe she just needs a good exercise? That said, Jenson tends to do better when she's around, I think... We shall see if I'm right this weekend.

Jenson said in an interview once that Jessica seemed to be his good luck charm.. so.. you must be right :P

  • lou23/07/2009 at 13:04

I belive you can also wear contacts under goggles

    contacts are evil.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 13:04

Contacts are not an option. Ewwwwewwwwwwwwewewewwe.

I heart my contacts in the summer because I can't wear my sunglasses without them. I also haven't seen my normal glasses in a week so had to wear contacts shopping the other day. I really need to find my glasses.

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 13:04

    agreed!! gah.

    Hehehehehehe. Haha.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 13:04

Ok, Ok sorry.. didnt realise the hatred for contacts!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 13:05

not if you're careful with earphone usage and ear protection at the GP's...

everyones hearing decreases with age though, so I am careful but I don't hold out much hope for my 80s.

A lot of people are a bit deaf by then ... but in the future we'll have robot ears, so it's OK!

  • Lukeh23/07/2009 at 13:05

I heart my contacts in the summer because I can't wear my sunglasses without them. I also haven't seen my normal glasses in a week so had to wear contacts shopping the other day. I really need to find my glasses.

Ms amy, there is no envy for you here...

I absolutely refuse to go poking my eyes with contact. Even the thought of it just... gives me goosebumps.

    Eeeeek. Ew. Eww. No.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 13:06

Contacts are not an option. Ewwwwewwwwwwwwewewewwe.

    agreed!! gah.

Mrs. Goat can't wear 'em - gets very itchy eyes!

Also watch out for split lenses - you get eye irriatation from that too!

  • me23/07/2009 at 13:06

Ok, Ok sorry.. didnt realise the hatred for contacts!

    i tried. i failed :)

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 13:06

A lot of people are a bit deaf by then ... but in the future we'll have robot ears, so it's OK!

As a kid I was the only one at my cleft-palate clinics without hearing aids, so at least I got a slightly better start than I could've :)

  • lou23/07/2009 at 13:06

I absolutely refuse to go poking my eyes with contact. Even the thought of it just... gives me goosebumps.

i think i'd be alright putting them in... it would be the worry about getting them out... or not getting them out *shivers*

    i tried. i failed :)

    Hahahaha.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 13:07

I absolutely refuse to go poking my eyes with contact. Even the thought of it just... gives me goosebumps.

My optometrist told me that males have a lot lot lot more problems in general than females with them. You're all wimps :P

Mrs. Goat can't wear 'em - gets very itchy eyes!

I can't wear them to work, the air conditioning dries them out too bad and itchy galore.

  • lou23/07/2009 at 13:07

    Hahahaha.

do i sense a funny story?

  • me23/07/2009 at 13:07

I don't think its fair that my brother was born with 20/20 vision, a better hair colour than me, and a lip + palate that was perfectly formed. Clearly my parents used up all the good genes on the first one.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 13:15

Maybe I was adopted from Finnish parents? Perhaps the fact I look exactly like my parents is just a fluke?

Hehe. I have the exact opposite, because my brothers are both proper ginger. I got the good end of the bargain :)

I keep falling behind - I have to selectively drop episodes as they run daily anyway...

The 404 even got me to buy a book! They invited a Polar Explorer called Tom Avery onto the podcast and he sounded really cool, so when I was in London I bought his book and it was very good.

Any chance I could move my show on Sidepodradio to 1:30 from 1pm?

I just say because it's always around 1pm i seem to have my sunday lunch (hence my own mini races to have my dinner before the start always ending just before it starts!)

Sorry to be an annoyance but just seems better to be safe than sorry :)

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 14:13

    it doesn't cancel car noise?

I think i have lost this debate...

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 14:14

I keep falling behind - I have to selectively drop episodes as they run daily anyway...

So, let's see of the CNET shows, I listen to:

The Apple Byte, BOL, Buzz Report, Top 5, The 404 (sort of), The Green Show, Loaded and Mailbag. I heart the Mailbag, I want to do a Sidepodcast show just like it.

  • RG23/07/2009 at 14:14

Course. Is that late enough, because we can always shuffle around more.

You have to click more and then link and then copy and paste.

They say you have to submit your link and then click rename? So that's about ten times more steps than originally anyway - and that's after logging in.

    Gotta love that tinyurl.com.

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 15:07

THE WORM TURNS - "Someone previously downtrodden gets his revenge; an unfavorable situation is reversed. The saying represents an evolution of the old proverb, 'Tread on a worm and it will turn.' The meaning was that even the most humble creature tries to counteract rough treatment. Shakespeare picked up the thought in Henry VI, Part 3, where Lord Clifford urges the king against 'lenity and harmful pity, saying:

To whom do lions cast their gentle looks?

Not to the beast that would usurp their den.

The smallest worm will turn being trodden on,

And doves will peck in safeguard of their brood.'"

    ok then.

BTW, last Sunday I watched 'The Merchant of Venice' - the new one with Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes and Al Pacino. I love that play anyway - one of my favourite Shakespeare plays... but did you know there's a character called 'Bassanio' in it? It made me giggle!

  • RG23/07/2009 at 15:18

That and I don't see the point of it in later life.

3rd form we did Midsummer Nights dream, that was the only one I hated of the five we did over the years. Haaated.

I did that one too - considering all the love triangle dramas on TV these days I'm surprised you didn't like it?

I don't mind that one either - it can be quite funny if done properly!

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 15:18

    You called them form's too?

they call them years now and I have to stop and think what they mean when my teacher friend says 'I had my year 10 class' and I say 'oh.......fourth form?'

Wiki says "Although this system is not used in administration anymore, it is still used at some schools (mainly independent ones), and in talk with older generations, who often prefer to use the system they are more familiar with."

    I'm an older generation. Awesome.

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 15:19

    I'm an older generation. Awesome.

Me too.. Although for me it only starts at third form, and we have upper and lower 6th forms.

6th form is commonly used here for the final 2 years of school

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 15:20

Because the schools latch on incorrectly to a certain theme within the play...

    Possibly

  • Amy23/07/2009 at 15:21

I can't remember back in my day ;)

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 15:24

Now you can shout "Get off my form!"

I remember my first week at my school, we had just all entered the third form (Yr9)

This crazy kid from Hong Kong comes along and shouts to another guy in my year 'Are you messing with a 4th Former?'

I didnt really know how to respond to that, not sure i do now either!

It's all about driver preference apparently. ;)

  • RG23/07/2009 at 15:47

You might be on your own!

Hmm, wouldn't mind if he came back. As long as he doesn't dare step anywhere near Timo's seat, I'll live.

  • Christine23/07/2009 at 15:48

i might do that too. don't tell nick though.

Not when I'm around you don't!

  • Journeyer23/07/2009 at 15:48

But from the way it is just a title i say they have someting new which they feel is valid enough to report

JV's statement isn't a straight denial. I wouldn't close the door on that one just yet.

oooookay. i'll have those 5mins back then.

  • lou23/07/2009 at 15:48

That's better. Soon you'll be rivalling Jenson then.

ahaha i doubt it, but he was really pleased with my driving and says that i seem to have taken to it really well :)

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 15:48

Pwah! these people know nothing i tell ye!

But that was last night and this one was today.

    Yuji Ide? :D

I do like this bit of it though:

my knees don't reach the steering wheel. So short. So very short. My dad can't even get into his car if I drive it and don't put the seat back when I get out of it.

I liked how Villenuerve was nowhere all season, and then in his second race, Kubica got a podium at Monza.

No way. Just getting there is an achievement!

I can't support someone just for being in F1 regardless of their nationality!

OK, but for a Kiwi to get into F1 would be an immense achievement!

Since Mr C's fabulous more button appeared on the doohickey I have a new routine when I open it up. Uncheck the follow comment box and keep clicking the more button until my name appears on the list of commenters that way I can go back to my last comment without any effort. I have just set a new record of 580 comments with the more button.

  • me23/07/2009 at 18:23

I only went back to my last comment. The button was stil there asking me to press it again.

the button will always be there, but it may not find any more comments. i forget what the figure is (i think maybe 900 comments?), but that figure includes all the spam comments that you never get to see.

so the exact figure will vary depending on how much spam we get in any one period, but it won't go back infinitely.

Apparently yes. Saw it earlier that Red Bull are the first team to lock down both drivers for 2010

  • Steven Roy23/07/2009 at 18:27

Quick question, is Vettel contracted to Red Bull next year as well as Webber?

I think Vettel is contracted for next year. I guess Dank or Alianora would be the best people to ask. Or Joe of course.

it went really well. My instructor was really pleased with the way i seem to be picking everything up, and is pleased how confident i'm becoming. did some reversing, and a few manouvers and stuff. he even said if my lesson hadn't have been at rush our he would have let me drive myself home, but he thought that he could get a little tricky pulling into my drive if it's really really busy, so i have that sort of fun to look forward to next week :D but i really really really really loved it.i could have driven round that estate all day.

OK… So this is the first of 2 videos which I have put together from what I had filmed at Goodwood.

The first thing you will notice is that it is rubbish… Sorry! It is shaky a lot of the time, and gets super shaky in the parts which have been sped up a bit… If you get sick watching the Blair witch project do not watch this!

Secondly… what is in it? Well I had originally planned to do a sort of guided tour around Goodwood for all the people who live too far away to go or have just never been. Un fortunately the audio for this, and my camera work was shocking so I have tried to salvage as much of that footage as possible and put a bit of music in the background to help it along. So this video is mostly walking around the estate, especially the paddocks and looking at the cars, the sights and the crowds. It’s a little bit long, but I hope it gives you a flavour of what it is like to walk around the site. There isn’t any action or engine noises… Don’t worry there will be lots of that in the next video as that is its focus!

Its pretty poor, but please enjoy!

Not that I was going to take the plunge with him anyway.

  • Scott Woodwiss23/07/2009 at 20:48

I love the fact that the wheel helps you to be so much smoother and precise. Plus I've learned in the WTCC cars, you need to keep the throttle in as much as possible in order to help maintain the grip. Once you start lifting, the diff unlocks and that causes lift-off oversteer. By keeping the throttle on, even just a bit, it helps to keep the diff locked on and pretty much wipe out any chance of spinning.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 20:50

OK guys... after watching Carlton Kirby commentate on the 250's from Germany I can conclude that he must be Danish by the way he commentates!

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 20:51

I am probably wrong, but wouldnt a locked diff cause the wheels to slide more and oversteer, and an unlocked diff remove it?

  • Scott Woodwiss23/07/2009 at 20:51

I am probably wrong, but wouldnt a locked diff cause the wheels to slide more and oversteer, and an unlocked diff remove it?

Maybe. I might have them mixed up. LOL

  • Jon Waldock23/07/2009 at 20:52

I am probably wrong, but wouldnt a locked diff cause the wheels to slide more and oversteer, and an unlocked diff remove it?

If you lock a diff then its like having a solid axle, so potentially yes

  • F1Punter23/07/2009 at 20:53

I got Raikkonen. Happy with that!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)23/07/2009 at 20:55

Exactly - the smoothness makes you faster, the preciseness gives you confidence to go for lines otherwise possible. You should always have a little throttle on, even while braking and cornering. Under braking a tiny bit of throttle keeps the car balanced and if you keep a little bit of throttle while going round the corner you keep the speed up and reduce lift-off oversteer...

Last night I was in a Radical and I was just spinning a lot. Now just did a race at Valencia and all the precision and smoothness helped keep the car point the right way the whole race. It's brilliant :D

I should try the 360 games with a steering wheel. Even last night with the normal controller I managed to turn WTCC into the newest form of Rallying it seemed with my racing lines, harnessing the power of Piquet Jr, let's say.

Get the Logitech 360 wheel. The official MS is apparently nowhere near as good. Plus at as little as £22.99 from Amazon, it's a bargain! :D

  • me23/07/2009 at 21:14

I got Raikkonen. Happy with that!

    ok. what's the secret??

  • Jon Waldock23/07/2009 at 21:14

aha, i am the nerdy-est person ever, i've got my wheel set up, with pedals....i may also have got my gloves and boots on, and my helmet is next to me....i just need a suit now...

    Bargain price though!

I might just have to borrow a pair of my dad's old racing gloves. He's got an old pair of blue Sparco ones from his Formula Ford days.

how is it that cheap. the wheel for the ps2 back in hte day used to be the logitech driving force pro, cheapest i can find it is £28 boo

It is essentially a DFP for the 360, only without the shifter and 900 degrees rotation.

Im not so sure, the brake pedal dosent work too well, so i only get half as much angle on it, which, ya know, is hard for stuff like stopping,

  • Steven Roy23/07/2009 at 21:25

You will be at first ... you need loads of practice but trust me you'll get better!

I remember the first time I tried GP2 with a wheel. I had won the top level championship using the key board and couln't hang on to the slow guys at the bottom level with a wheel and pedals. With a little time though I was a lot quicker with the wheel

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:05

hmm, small teams playing hardball then. unexpected.

It sounds like the bigger teams who want to use their F1 ops as research facilities for other areas. makes sense for a big corp like toyota or a company like mclaren to use their facilities and people to develop other things if they are unable to use them for F1. the problem is though there is bound to be some overlap...

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:06

Williams want a 'special team' bonus like Ferrari & McLaren

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:07

Williams want a 'special team' bonus like Ferrari & McLaren

    they probably deserve one too.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:08

I'd hate to see Williams leave. After all, they exist because of F1

  • Nick23/07/2009 at 23:11

    they probably deserve one too.

    Not recently.

I like the team and i used to support it, but it doesn't have the identity of Ferrari, or the recent success and support of McLaren.

This might be a bit radical, but if williams were to race elsewhere i wouldnt take anywhere nears as much interest as if it was Ferrari or Mclaren. Thus are they that important to F1 today?

  • me23/07/2009 at 23:11

I'd hate to see Williams leave. After all, they exist because of F1

me too. but they've had the same chances as mclaren, it's just the woking chaps did a better job. williams squandered a massive advantage. in part that was down to rule changes and engines suppliers, but they didn't have to keep ralf schumacher for all those years.

  • Bassano Clapper23/07/2009 at 23:12

...but they didn't have to keep ralf schumacher for all those years.

Look at what happened with Mansell, Hill and JV.

He is a far worse people manager than Ron ever was.

As soon as anyone started to get too big in their boots frank forces them out. BMW was one time too many for the team, and you struggle to see when they will win another race.
