Apparently it is rat-catcher's day today, which is not a pleasant thought to start the day with, but it does commemorate the Pied Piper of Hamelin, which makes it slightly better. Wikipedia says it is just like Secretary's Day, but presumably with more rats. Anyway, here is what's happening in F1 at the moment:

  • Cosworth believe they will be able to make their engines competitive despite turning down the option to increase the rev count to 20,000rpm. They also say that for now, keeping eight engines a season is a good idea, even if the option is there to reduce that further in the future.
  • On the subject of the future, Mario Theissen thinks the teams want to discuss the calendar with Bernie, as they are worried about losing out on important markets. The US is already missing, and Germany could soon drop off the calendar as well. Will Bernie be open to suggestions though?
  • Finally, don't forget about Sidepodradio. You can catch up on the idea here, but if you've signed up for a show already, how are you getting on? Need any help from us? Don't forget to let us know what you need, and if you want audience participation, we can create a page for you on the wiki.

That'll do it for now. It's the middle of the week now, which is always good, plodding along nicely towards the weekend. I'll see you in the comments.

Can I just say that I really like the new (well new-ish) SPC slogan "All for F1 and F1 for All". I noticed it when it was introduced, but forgot to post.

    Just looking at sidepodradio

Can Alex really play 2 hours of music? That's two Jethro Tull songs, right?

and a live/pre recorded cooking show? Now that should be interesting. Will Mr C be live trying to keep up with LPG?

I think the idea is that LPG will be pre-recorded and Christine will play each instruction at the appropriate time.

I can't think about this right now, I'm too concerned about this weekend.

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 23:18

I think the idea is that LPG will be pre-recorded and Christine will play each instruction at the appropriate time.

I think LPG should record it with gaps so that Mr C has to be at the right place at the right time or he won't hear the instructions. Of course Christine is going to have to translate most of it anyway.

Come to that does anyone from the USA have a show?

Wouldn't it be a shame if the USA let down sidepodradio?

  • Paul21/07/2009 at 23:20

    Does Dan have a show?

I've hadn't had a radio show since my college days where I filled in. I did a hard rock radio show in a jazz format for three months.

Would this be a skype thing? How would this work?

Wouldn't it be a shame if the USA let down sidepodradio?

So I guess there is no pressure... right?

My MX5, at a track called Oran Park, near Sydney.

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 23:22

You can pre-record it like Alex did with Giggles Radio which is on dropio or you can fo it live via Skype. Can be music or anything else you fancy.

About a year, but I've never been to Oran Park, and it has some quite tricky sections. I am doing some laps with some old-time gurus though, so I will get some tips.

the dogleg will quickly become a favourite. Watch the bump the second corner after the bridge. Or is it the third...? You'll have a great time!

I think I am going to take a hour in the evening. I wanted to do a midseason review column for the blog but it always ended up too long. I can actually do my "how X music explains the F1 season so far" midseason review. Kind of like I did last year in a column but with actual music this time.

Can we get Joe in fla to do one too?

This sketch show... is everyone going to write one then dish out the parts?

I will hapily narate anything, i need to do it next thurday at teh latest though as i will be leaving for the cricket at midday friday...

I guess i could also do some on sunday evening live if need be too..

MX5 right? You'll drift it through nicely by the end of the day :-)

depends on your braking for the first corner really. If you are going on Sunday, do you fancy a sidepodmeetup?

I think we need to somehow pull the whole thing together. We could actually make it various set piece sketches with a story woven all the way through rather than randome 2 minute sketches.

MG Car Club Canberra. and before you laugh, they're a nice bunch of people, organize good motorkhanas, and have a great trailer for hire.

I just realized my "family" will mean I miss the F1 too. Booooo :-(

got a question for some you Brits. What's the deal with vinegar on your fish and chips. I had fish and chips at the Irish Embassy (An Irish bar in Montreal, not the real embassy) and tried the vinegar thing.....didn't get it. Prefer ketchup. Do any of you Brits have ketchup with your F&C's

    Both actually

I liked the Embassy, one of the better 'themed' Montreal pubs

  • Joe in Fla22/07/2009 at 00:47

They dig that. It's easy, all about timing, like pit stops with safety cars

  • Bassano Clapper22/07/2009 at 00:47

    G'night Nick

  • Paul22/07/2009 at 00:48

waterfront was a long walk for me. Cresent St was the center of all F1 activity. It's not a very easy Metro ride to the waterfront though.

  • Journeyer22/07/2009 at 05:49

When did you realise you were a geek?

Now that is a pretty interesting question, right there. Might answer it later when I have time. ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/07/2009 at 05:59

    Morning everyone :)

Morning - you're an early starter these days? Are you commenting from your train?

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 06:07

Morning - you're an early starter these days? Are you commenting from your train?

Not particularly early for me. Alarm goes off at 5:30. But it's not often that people are around. I am on the train at the moment but only because I missed my usual train. I am usually at my desk by 7 (which was six minutes ago).

Madly the stock market is still based on the principal that it's a fruit and veg market and so everything starts early.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 06:09

Morning - you're an early starter these days? Are you commenting from your train?

Also when I was working on the novel I was determined not to get distracted by sidepodcast first thing.

You start pretty early too Gavin don't you?

Journeyer I presume you are on a significantly different time zone.

Yeah - technically it's halfway across the country but in reality it's a 1-hour fast train and then a quick subway ride and a short walk once in Copenhagen...

It's an old film, a courtroom drama I bought for £2 in HMV. It's quite good!

You’ve all the seen the lovely FIA news i guess?

Well, it's a fancy way for the FIA to deny it. But who are they fooling, really?

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 09:56

This is the FIA: "Look... We just reviewed a list of all actresses in the wold and selected Michelle Yeoh. We didn't even know that she was going out with the person we are trying to anoint as successor to our retiring dictator. We thought about getting her to do an advert for us, but instead we decided to send her and her partner (whoever that is) to all of the countries who can vote for the anointed successor of our retiring dictator. He tagged along because although he is a very busy man he decided to support her by shaking the hands of all of the people who would have to vote for him. To suggest there is something dodgey in all of this is scandalous. We did not pay to fly Jean Todt all around the world, we paid to send Michelle Yeoh all around the world with her partner Jean Todt. THERE'S A DIFFERENCE."

  • Journeyer22/07/2009 at 09:57

Well, it’s a fancy way for the FIA to deny it. But who are they fooling, really?

It's kinda like our local congressmen distributing food to their poor constituents. They'll always say it's just part of their job, but everyone knows there's an ulterior motive...

always close apps. i can't help it.

christine's machine is a sea of open windows, all taking up tiny bits of memory. i reboot the mac most days, even though i don't have too.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 10:57

In my browsers I have as my first three tabs at home: Google Mail, Doohicky and Twitter as my first three tabs. At work Fogbugz, Doohicky and Twitter (because home e-mail is blocked).

You could have that launch on startup, although I guess you don't need to now.

When we emigrated to NZ we got delayed in LA because Mt. Ruapehu was erupting. When we tried to land in Auckland, the pilot tried and aborted twice due to fog. The pilot announced that we were flying to Christchurch and to do that, we flew almost directly overhead the volcano, which was spitting out ash, rocks and smoke. It was coooool!

Is that because he ignored Heikki winning last year ;) ?

No, it was definitely based solely on the "Formula One loves the Hungarian Grand Prix"

there was a story a couple of days ago. he said couldn't believe what happened, because in f1 their perfect. or some such nonsense. not on twitter though.

    Carry on.

best thing to do is play it once and do something else (with the sound down?) then play it again, and it loads fine :) works with me anyways :)

  • Nick22/07/2009 at 13:51

Hasn't all he said that there should be better wheel tethers?

He basicly said that the FIA cut costs so much in F2 the design of the car was dangerous.

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 14:12

blimey. ok, should we volunteer steven?

We could do. Steven came up with the idea of linking it all together, so we need an underlying theme, don't we?

I thought maybe a new team joining the grid would be good, because it's a way of introducing all the characters.

  • Flibster22/07/2009 at 14:13

    Oooh. Didn't notice earlier - It's Pi day. :D

    Mmmm Pi....

And presumably the funky character names need to be standard, else it won't make sense. But the scenarios are a free-for-all.

If you use an inaccurate estimate for the value of Pi... then yes, it is!

  • me22/07/2009 at 14:15

    self nomination. even better.

    :)

  • Flibster22/07/2009 at 14:16

If you use an inaccurate estimate for the value of Pi... then yes, it is!

22/7 is Archimedes' own approximation of pi

If it's good enough for him - It'll do for me.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/07/2009 at 14:17

Archimedes didn't have a calculator or a computer though...

Most of my Math teachers told me that if I used 22/7 it would be considered the wrong approximation due to more modern methods...

  • Nick22/07/2009 at 14:18

I thought maybe a new team joining the grid would be good, because it's a way of introducing all the characters.

Maybe, but a lot of the sketches are spoofs of the normal f1 people interacting...

Perhaps if everyone debates a concept tonight, then everyone can submit ideas for scenes to the wiki over the next few days, then we can write a script and dish out parts next week, and hopefully record it then?

  • me22/07/2009 at 14:18

christine may like this page. haven't added everyone i follow yet. but i shall do.

it brings back the whole of the tweet conversation that twitter stole from us recently.

the only downside is the avatars aren't picked up, and you have to roll over the the "Twitter" link to see who said what. however, i prefer that to only hearing about one third of the conversation as twitter would prefer.

  • Sean Golding22/07/2009 at 14:18

I did like my Professor Marino Tessen and Bobby Cube, yes

  • Nick22/07/2009 at 14:21

Ah, so we're using the ones that were written last night?

    not nececaraly...

but some of the characthers like Bravio and Stephanie De Monte Carlo were quite good!

Making fun of people we all know could be quite funny... Should the narater be Hurry Talker or Cake Chumpies?

  • Nick22/07/2009 at 14:22

I did like my Professor Marino Tessen and Bobby Cube, yes

Bobby cube is a bit to close to his name though... its more of a nick name...

  • Flibster22/07/2009 at 14:23

Archimedes didn't have a calculator or a computer though...

Most of my Math teachers told me that if I used 22/7 it would be considered the wrong approximation due to more modern methods...

Precisely - no computers or calculator - and still he came up with 22/7 as an approximation that he used. It's close enough for most day to day purposes I've found. But as most calculators now have a Pi button, there's no point using it.

If you want, you could use the American date and celebrate on March 14th at 1:59.26pm? ;)

One can be the narrator and one can appear in a sketch.

  • Nick22/07/2009 at 14:26

damn. i like both of them.

I think Cake Chumpy's Would be better.. Some crazy murray impression might make it difficult for the audience to know what is happening!

I am still not here. Don't start that again.

Following on from my argument yesterday that one of the reasons people prefered last season is that Christine got to say dumbo flugel a lot and Pedalo because we had testing it stands to reason that if we came up with a few similar things now this season would get better. Noe I think Jimmy Superaguri is good start but we need more people so get thinking.

    Evening sir.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 16:53

Just heard a great comment from Clay Shirky. I've just written my impression here my impression of way he said. This is not verbatim:

The Internet is more important than any previous form of media. All previous models print, recorded media (music, photos, etc), phone and tv/radio) required you to choose between either non-interactive one-to-many or interactive one-to-one. You couldn't do both. The Internet a) does both and b) incorporates all of the previous methods and c) allows a new dimension people you broadcast to to connect without you. Obvious but nicely explained.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 16:54

you may think you're doing alright because your shifts are over but actually it is because I, Dr Giggles, prescribed myself a day of Muse.

I have listened to Super Massive Black Holes about 10 times.

Oddly what I've done is left the muse selection on random on all day - as people often disturb me at my desk I don't stop or pause just keep going. But weirdly people haven't seemed to disturb me while that song is on. Odd!

Now I'm nervous to mention this. But when I mentioned my day long muse fest to a co-worker they suggested that I should try Kasabian for a day and that this would be more likely to sort you out. I asked them, "who's the doctor of giggles around here?" But I am interested on what your response would have been.

I don't like them very much... whenever I see them they seem kind of stuck up for their own good. Although this coming from a fanatic of a band who's upcoming album consists of a 15 minute rock symphony that'll be undoubtedly ridiculous and brilliantly over the top so whether my opinion of other band's pompous attitudes is valid remains another question :)

I like a few of their songs... just not... them...

I didn't buy a ticket, but I saw them at the o2. Possibly the most dosapointing concert I've ever been to (and I've been to more than 300 and I didn't expect much).

    300?!?

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:41

    300?!?

I went to at least one gig a week between 1996 and 2002 um my maths is off right. And I started going to gigs in 95 and I still go to gigs these days but it's more like 10 to 20 a year rather than 50.

So it might well be 400+ but I was being conservitive.

  • me22/07/2009 at 17:42

    300?!?

easy to do if you live in the city.

  • me22/07/2009 at 17:42

So it might well be 400+ but I was being conservitive.

although 400 is quite a few...

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:46

Most embaressing gig story. I went to see Olive them of the one hit wonder you're not alone. A friend got us backstage and I managed to walk back there and trying to be polite I walked up to a band member and said, "hi I really love you guys, great gig, you guys are at the begining of something massive." And the guy said, "yeah I'm not in the band, you want those guys over there." and they all burst out laughing. Had to spend the next hour with them.

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 17:46

although 400 is quite a few...

    I have been to one.

    wow! I've only been to 1 :(

Although it was the best gig out of all the, er, gigs I've been to!

  • me22/07/2009 at 17:47

    I have been to one.

    is - wenolongerheartalexforgoingouside.com available?

  • Lukeh22/07/2009 at 17:48

I realised I quoted earlier on that but I thought it said 30 gigs, until mr c poinetd out the whole three hundredness of it all :)

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:49

although 400 is quite a few...

I like that you reckon 300 is okay but 400 is too much :)

i moved to London in 1996 and never looked back. Work and Katherine have slowed me down in recent years.

i kind of figured i must've been in the 200's (just about) and therefore 300 was possible. 400 is basically double my total and therefore right out.

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 17:52

please tell us who it was :)

    You ask a good question.

  • Lukeh22/07/2009 at 17:54

    Urm... alex...

you know you listened you've had a muse day, where you listened to lots of songs? Well.. I dunno how to explain this for my own musical experiences today

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:55

    wow! I've only been to 1 :(

if you think about how much you may have paid for your ticket... I used to got to Barfly, Bull and Gate, Water rats, Dublin castle and so on depending on the night you just had to buy beer to get in. These are the venues that Bowie, Nirvana and Coldplay had their first gigs. Only Coldplay of these I saw before they were signed - not that old!

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 17:55

    Doves.

i used to go outside in the days BCB yup.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:57

    Doves.

ah I've seen them. Supporting U2. With Athelete.

    Why them?

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 17:58

    Why them?

    Because I was told to.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 17:59

i used to go outside in the days BCB yup.

Ah! I see. But I still go outside AKH an I lived in London. Maybe that does it.

    400 is madness obviously.

Since the train moved commenting is working great. Phone obviously lying to me.

  • me22/07/2009 at 18:00

    Not a little bit.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 18:04

And I would like to point out that I have seen some truly terrible bands over the years and some great ones that never made it.

Now wondering if I ever saw Mr C over the years.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 18:05

    Not a little bit.

Ah okay. Do you like Doves not live?

  • me22/07/2009 at 18:05

    camden? very likely.

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 18:06

Erm, a couple of songs maybe.

  • Christine22/07/2009 at 18:07

You'd think you'd remember the guy in the panda suit.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 18:08

    camden? very likely.

yeah all over Camden almost every week at the Bull and Gate unsigned night and then plenty of others.

  • Alex Andronov22/07/2009 at 18:08

You'd think you'd remember the guy in the panda suit.

    oh that's true :)

  • Steven Roy22/07/2009 at 18:10

That is an important lesson for life. In most situations people only know what you tell them about you and what you do.

You may only ever co-host a half hour quiz but hen it comes time to write a CV and make it seem more you will be one of only two people ever to co-host a quiz on sidepodradio or to host the sidepodpanel.

Spin is used for a reason.

I'm sure in time you'll adjust and improve :)

Now, I'm about to get very excited with sometime I have just read.

It is now widely expected that Rally GB will shift to Newcastle for its November 2010 date, meaning the world's finest rally drivers will return to the Kielder forest for the first time since 1995.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76989

    Eeeek.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/07/2009 at 20:14

You should stick to GTR Evo anyway, sounds like you're on a roll in that one!

    You mean Race Pro. LOL.

Although I've noticed my laptimes are slower than they were when using a controller. :(

    Err... yeah that one.

You will be slower at first, but trust me, once you set up the wheel correctly and get into the groove you should be knocking chunks off your times...

It's not a proper rally until they revert to starting in the midlands, going to scotland, down to wales and back to the midlands again!

It does come with an AC adapter which must be for the axial feedback. Trouble is, I need a US to UK plug adapter. Need to stop off in Maplin tomorrow before work and nab one.

  • Steven Roy22/07/2009 at 20:16

It was always crazy having the rally without Kielder

The astronauts are returning to the airlock to end today's spacewalk. They only managed to install two of the four batteries they were scheduled to istall so for the third time in three spacewalks this mission they have failed to complete their workload.

nope... not stage mics anyways, not sure if there is a difference in studio and stage mics though

  • Lukeh22/07/2009 at 20:29

    you shouldn't?

no you should instead say 'Four four four four'

  • RG22/07/2009 at 20:30

It's not a proper rally until they revert to starting in the midlands, going to scotland, down to wales and back to the midlands again!

how about "four to the floor"?

  • Steven Roy22/07/2009 at 20:32

Did they lose their tools or are they just not very good?

I wasn't paying much attention even though I have had had NASA TV on for most of it. The batteries weigh 367 pounds (170kg) on Earth and have loads of fins for cooling that have to be lined up absolutely perfectly to install. So they must be a sod to remove as well as install,

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/07/2009 at 20:32

    #sidepodspace update

In lieu of the 40th anniversary of the 1st Moon Landing last Monday, me and Mrs. Goat have been watching "From the Earth to the Moon". Tonight was the Apollo 11 episode, and I must admit I may have shed a little man tear at the end, it's such a good programme.

The missus loves it which is great because (a) she doesn't normally like what I like and (b) seems to dislike science and machinery. But she had a great big grin at the end of tonight's episode, which made me feel even better!

  • Lukeh22/07/2009 at 20:33

how about "four to the floor"?

Do NOT tap the micrphone constantly then say that. I have a feeling you could get arrested... ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss22/07/2009 at 20:33

how about "four to the floor"?

"Four on the floor" might be more relevant for us petrolheads ;)

  • me22/07/2009 at 20:34

    because it gets drummers excited?

    really? there's an f1/musical crossover?

Oh wait I just got it :D my mind will catch up in a minute

  • lou22/07/2009 at 20:37

any idea why not? tis news to me (apparently a lot of things are).

i assume it's the same reason you should never blow into a microphone... cause you can damage it. although i think it's mainly because the more you tap stage mics the greater the chances of it either falling off it's stand and breaking, or really really annoying the sound guys.

  • Scott Woodwiss22/07/2009 at 20:37

    really? there's an f1/musical crossover?

Well not F1 but relevant to cars. "Four on the floor" is a term for a four-speed gearbox in an American muscle car.

  • Jon Waldock22/07/2009 at 20:38

i know... that's happened to me once... it only ever happens once, then you learn your lesson to start the volume as quiet and make it louder... and also not to let little kids anywhere near the mics :D

Well the line is "With a four speed on the floor they'll be waiting at the door"

The song then goes on to mention that owning the car may make the occupants more attractive to the opposite sex, but they usually cut that bit out when the film is shown on TV.

it's just advertising. you pay google money and they display your ad. every time someone clicks your ad, you pay whatever you agreed for the placement.

i think we have some f1 minute ads running at the moment. costs about £0.50 a day and sends people to the site. you can spend as much or as little as you like.

I think it should depend on what has to be done with them. If it is just store then play then they can be late but if you two have to take the pre-records and stitch them together into a melodrama then they should be earlier.

The Czech drivers name has to be difficult to pronounce.

  • Steven Roy22/07/2009 at 21:39

The Czech drivers name has to be difficult to pronounce.

Absolutely essential. We can have race commentary, interviews etc. Various discussions in the paddock about Donnelly and the legality of the car. Christine was absolutely right when she said a new team would be a great way to link the characters.

Out of a tack of 10, in which about... 6 finished after DQ's and people leading. Also the leader left the game mid race but Scott may deny this happened... :P

  • Scott Woodwiss22/07/2009 at 21:41

We started 4th (Scott) and 6th (myself). Scott won the race, I came 2nd :)

I only won because the guy who was leading quit on the last lap for some reason. At that point he was something like 10 seconds ahead. Still, a win's a win :P

    I ♥ Curitiba + my new wheel :D

I have just thought of an idea to get around Thursdays being rubbish

Rename it to Wednesday 2. or Wednesday +24, or something, like the TV programs, so it's Wednesday but 24 hours later... then when it's done, we can go to Friday and Thursday will have never existed. Simples!

  • Scott Woodwiss22/07/2009 at 21:55

Sorry, I'm teasing now. Thursday Next is the name of a character in a series of books by Jasper Fforde. She's a literary detective. The books are great, they even come with their own "upgrades" on the web.

Sim racing news: Looks like PD have accidentally unveiled the Nurburgring GP circuit in GT PSP! There's a new trailer revealing more cars and tracks for the game and there's a shot which shows a Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R pulling out of pitboxes at the Nurburgring. But the Nordschleife, the only known version of the circuit, doesn't have any at all, so it must mean the GP circuit is included too! :D

steven makes a good point. I used to buy the Beano when I was young on a thursday. All that havoc with the bash street kids, oh and that gnasher always causing trouble with Dennis, oh what joyful times.

Now all thursday provides is emmerdale, rain and general non-beano related havoc of a negative nature. Boo to you thursday.

Although I wish lou all the best with her driving lessons, she should just ignore the whole 'thursday' aspect of thursday. ;)

    Do any of you Brits have ketchup with your F&C’s {Comment #106}

I have to admit not. If a plate of fish and chips doesn't taste good on its own, it's not going to work no matter how much vinegar, sauce or seasoning I pour on the concoction. If it does taste good, I want to taste the fish and chips, not the additional bits. You can safely infer from this that I don't season other meals either.

  • Alianora La Canta23/07/2009 at 10:01

    i’m not cooking her dinner! maybe a cake or something. not a meal though. {Comment #125}

If it was a raw dinner (i.e. one where no heat-generating devices were involved), would that be a possibility worth considering? Apparently there are some good raw meals around (other than salad, which is the obvious one).

  • Alianora La Canta23/07/2009 at 10:10

    there were a couple of bad calls around that period, i think the 9 disks containing half the internet came from them too. {Comment #301}

To be fair, that was because the McLaren head of PR got his numbers mixed up. Usually the head of PR for a team is considered a reasonably reliable source, so that error was understandable.

I also remember that it was possible to do what was claimed if PNG format was used for the stuff specified, but the fact that the information was stored on such an archaic format as floppies argues against that a little.

I think it's one of those things - when press people worry that the future of F1 is going down the tubes (or otherwise get very emotionally invested in a particular subject), they make more errors.

  • Alianora La Canta23/07/2009 at 10:21

    “Amused by Easyjet captain who on landing at Budapest told plane full of Red Bull Racing personnel that weather looked good for Brawn.” {Comment #524}

Not the most diplomatic welcome possible, but I suppose it is fair warning...
