Monday is over already? What happened? Where did it go? If it wasn't such an unpopular day, I would ask for it back already. Oh, well, I guess I must turn my attention to Tuesday instead. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Toro Rosso made the most of their two days worth of press announcements by sacking Bourdais last week and announcing Not Seb this week. The rookie is also planning to continue his World Series by Renault racing, which is known as FR3.5. Can anyone explain that to me?
- Whilst Ferrari have joined the ranks of those looking ahead to next year already, BMW have vowed to keep on pushing for 2009. Really? I'm all for sticking in the year you are in, but of all the teams to make the switch, I would have put money on BMW being at the top of the list. What can they possibly achieve from here?
- Finally, I have revamped the Birthdays page on the wiki because the wonky calendar style was really irritating me. Hopefully I haven't missed anyone out, but if you're not on there, please add yourself so that when the time comes we can forget wish you a happy birthday.
That'll do it for now. It looks like the teams are starting to release their preview quotes for Hungary, so keep your eyes peeled for anything interesting. I'll see you in the comments.
Evening folks
How does this happen to me, its Tuesday already
That's easy.
Sidepodcast ;)
what? oh jeez. i have to sleep.
it's so not fair :(
G'night Gavin

Evening
Night all who are leaving
her name's at the bottom of the page ;)
I'm writing using a piece of paper and a pen, this is very odd....very very odd
i'm unwell. well sort of.
aha, it all makes sense :D
blimey! you play a few games of tennis on the wii and it's already tomorrow... i mean today... tuesday..
Uh, how do I quote the original post?
Did you win?
hehe, games do that to you
Not my fault, this time :)
I have made it back alive from my fight with a giant moth. It flew away.
Coward.
Copy and paste in the middle
i won one match and lost two...
ok ta
We had a hornet fly into the office today.. they are REALLY big
withoutthe spaces
Thats annoyingly better than me
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.Bad experiences with them. :(
They are rubbish!!! I can deal with most stuff like that but not them....
Tried twice and failed twice
Pat, was it you I was chatting to about La Roux's album? I kinda like it so far. Still surprised by that too
and at the end
it's closer to real tennis than i thought it would... am still getting the hang of aiming properly though.
i think it came to me, but then it flew into my bed side light. mwahaha
Everytime I try to post blockquote or /bockquote with round it I get blanks
They are silly, they fly right into them them!
I can't believe how big that one was though, could see his eyes reflecting... creepy.
Stay away from the light
I can't, it's so beautiful :)
:D:D
WSbR is the name of the 'package'. It contains Formula Renault 3.5, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, and the Megane Trophy (and maybe a Clio Eurocup, can't remember) as well as various Renaults from motorsport history.
Nice job on the adjustments. I added yesterday's anniversary.
Yep it was - I'll give it a run at some point if it is on Spotify or Last.fm, then.
MIlton Jones: You know if you're a Sea Captain and a moth? You see a lighthouse....
I have tomorrow's lunch to make, I shall return
Theres a plug on my floor which is just waiting to be stepped on....
It is said that the most painful thing you can step on is a UK 13A plug.
omg *remembers the pain of stepping on a plug when she was small* ....move it off the floor quickly!!!
I thought it was second after a claymore landmine
and spears sticking upwards
It does really hurt. I have done it more than once.
BTW Lou are you looking forward to co-hosting the sidepodradio quiz?
So, does a 3 amp hurt less?
erm.... what?
Jackie and Maverick are writing the questions but Mav is on holiday and Jackie thought you would be the ideal co-host. I think she is nervous about doing it herself
but....why me? why not Amy?..she hasn't got a show yet, right?..
Jackie and you did the sidepodpanel together and she thought you two would be good together.
Amy is doing a show with Journeyer. They just have to sort the time out.
oh.
oh.
uh oh.
That's a bit non-commital.
It will just be like the show you hosted before. You don't have to think what to say and you don't have to try to be funny or anything you only have to read questions.
hmm.
Guy Sebastion song?
Hello everyone
hmm is three letters just like yes. Co-incidence?
Hi Jeremy
yes, it's a co-incidence. should i have written 'hm'?
Hey Jeremy
I am so please you said yes
?
Hi Jeremy
no... i meant yes it's a co-incidence.
it's very daggy to like this Australian artist, but I do. I think he won our first Australian idol reality show. Excellent in concert. Amazing voice.
Lou, if you're not up for it, don't feel pressured into doing it.
We'd all love to hear you do a show, though
Rather than say no now, spend some more time considering it
You can't leave Jackie on her own
i don't understand why though... i'll muck it up in some way ;) plus there are others who will be much better....
i'll think about it.
All of us are going to screw up. Listen back to the podpanels and we all screw up all the time and it is fun.
I think you will enjoy it and it will be good for you.
Believe me, I have no illusions about my performance being good. I think we all may have dodgy moments.
Each show will have it's gems though
hmm... i suppose. i'm not good with being out of my comfort zone though... hm....i'll think about it.
Who is?
I have no comfort zone :P
Talk to Jackie about it tomorrow.
How can I lose a pair of scissors without moving from my desk?
I can still hear scissors when a new post comes in though
Be careful where you stand when you get up!
yeah, okay.
Do people still prefer LCLT to Doohickey?
Or does Doohickey have the 'scissor snip' also now?
[Desktop Doohickey does not]
They are so blunt they won't cut anything anyway but they were in my hand a minute ago and now they have evaporated.
I use doohickey complete with scissor snip except for live shows or races when I use the lclt.
Still wouldn't want to step on them
i prefer Doohickey, but LCLT during race weekends.
it does. during live shows im a lclt man, everywhere else....doohickey :D
night all
I use DD separate to regular browsing
Don't know why, just evolved that way
night Jon.
They are small and have rounded edges. I woul have closed them before I put them down and they won't open. It's just annoying that I can't find them.
I am going to disappear now. See you lot later
night Steven!
See ya
Good luck with those scissors
G'night to Jon also
okay i must sleep now too. I've got at least 4 ideas for blog posts and want to get up early tomorrow to try and get them started/ planned and whatever :) speak to you all tomorrow! night! x
See ya Lou
Folk are going to bed early these days
Mr C is a bad influence :)
anyone still awake?
in the news today: "ten network has also had some good fortune on its new sport channel, one, with australian mark webber's breakthrough win increasing the viewing appeal of that sport for australian audiences" maybe if they realise this they should start showing qualifying when its actually live
also just saw a lovely link that states the german grand prix was the highest rating sporting event of the week, beating all the afl games that were on. Clearly the only answer is to stop delaying f1 for afl :D
good morning
Good morning!
it will be live so long as webber is in contention for the championship. it'll end once he falls out of contention.
Good morning, Wolf and Alex.
Especially in Sydney where we don't care about AFL!
I must say it was nice to watch a GP (from a wildly different timezone) live on a big screen. The only tiny Internet delivered footage necessary was during the stupid adverts. If only all free practice and qualifying came the same way...
Only BBC and Premiere do that, and I think only BBC offers it on Freeview. Very lucky, them Brits. ;)
Morning all!
our local news site has a video on Singapore GP. For those outside Asia the interesting part may be the chance to see our beloved ESP Star's Mr Steve Slater:
http://www.f1wolf.com/2009/07/video-on-singapore-gp-and-more.html
beloved is overstating it just a tad, no? ;)
:-)
watching the vid now. how long before we hear rumors of Hong Kong trying to take the Chinese GP from Shanghai? it's not that far-fetched.
I is on hold with Ticketek. The Grand Prix tickets, they shall be mine!
:D None of that kind of excitement for me for a while. :)
Sometimes I like that Australia always goes on sale ridiculously early, it makes the wait more exciting when you know you've already got tickets :D
Good luck Amy!
You're waiting for 8 months?! That's nuts! I had to wait 6 months since I bought my Singapore tickets, and I thought that was crazy-long.
8 months + the 6 minutes I've already been on this call. Someone answer the phone!
they are selling tickets without even knowing the dates ?
"Formula One or Formula the other one?"
Finally, one cracker of a line from Steve Slater. If only he was that good regularly.
Heheh. Give it 10 more minutes. Call again if no one answers by then?
theres a *subject to FIA approval next to them. I'll go regardless so no big deal to me if they change it :D
I suspect they already have proposed dates to the FIA, and we'll know what they are once the first calendar draft is released.
They have answered it, they asked if I was an Advantage member, I said yes. They asked if I wanted to keep my seat from this year, I said kind of. Then they put me on hold again :D
brochure says 25-28 March.
what's an Advantage member? what perks do you get?
you get a cap and access to a advantage bar :-)
the first year I got a selection of photos from the event, this year I got an ugly hat and pin and next year we get acesss to 'free downloads of the best digital images of the event'
They also have bars that are just for Advantage members which next year will apparently have guest speakers. Next year apparently I get a free program as well instead of having to pay $20 for one. The best part though is the Behind The Scenes tour they do on the Wednesday. I missed out in 08 because I landed in the country too late, but its where you get to walk around the paddock + pit lane, and then they have interviews with some drivers and things. I heart my advantage membership :D
me too, but I need confirmed dates as that will determine the size of our expedition :-)
booking flights and accomodation etc...
heh fair enough. I am all booked! Couldn't keep my same Fangio seat, but am now one section closer to the startline/podium. I am looking forward to my first time in the Jones stand, even if it is only on support race day :D
where are you seated on raceday, then?
Fangio, which is pit straight. I know lots of people find not sitting on a corner boring but I love watching all the grid activity before the race starts so on race day I wouldn't want to be anywhere else :D
i liked sitting along the straight in Sepang - you get to see grid activity, the pitstops, and the podium!
Yeah in Singapore I really missed being on the straight on race day :( There is 360 degree views from all the stands on http://grandprix.com.au/default.aspx?s=2010-4day-grandstand
that's outrageously expensive - not worth the price, i think.
yeah it was 3x the price of main straight in Melbourne! The guy I met up with in Singapore was sitting over there, I was jealous :D
Seeing the grid and the start procedure was awesome at Le Mans so I have to agree with you there!
nothing like hearing them all rev up at the same time right in front of you :D
Interesting article about Danish troops being warned to be careful using Facebook...
Don't forget seeing the cars, the drivers and crew mingling around and making race preparations... It's all good!
I liked watching Schumi + Flav trying to get a good look at the Brawns :D
I got to see Kristensen and McNish walk around, Luca Di Montezemolo cruise by in a Ferrari California, a Chinese Dragon and of course, Franck!
they did too in Sepang! :D
Why is there a 3.5 though? They didn't want to go up to 4?
Is this the Renault World Series powered by Nissan?
Yup.
here is a list of champions of that series that I can name.
1) Heikki Kovalainen.
2) Franck Montagny.
That is all.
Seems like it's a rather underrated series...
someone by the name of Fernando Alonso was champion once too, but what's he done since? Nothing!
:D
Don't you mean Fernando Anando?
ohhhh that guy
I had to refresh the site in order to get the site to show anything after I was last here. Silly Internet Explorer (which I can't change because I'm not on my own computer this morning).
We had a hornet fly into the office today.. they are REALLY big {Comment #30}
I had to fight a giant Triffid - otherwise known as a friend's excess climbing plant whose name had too many syllables to type. Does that count?
lucky? lucky?
three words for you sir: ejiot, pervert and longjohn.
i'll show you lucky, grr ;)
i approve of that!
That beats Grumpy Tom, Lego Head and Silly Man in a Wheelchair any day!
also, you got cool pics of the yearbook photograph for there too.
ah yes, nothing I like more than pictures of the back of drivers :D
here is a list of champions of that series that I can name.
1) Heikki Kovalainen.
2) Franck Montagny.
That is all. {Comment #149}
Don't forget Marc Gené (1998), Fernando Alonso (1999), Ricardo Zonta (2002) and Robert Kubica (2005). Sebastian Vettel would probably be a WSbR champion as well had he not been required for substitution duties in F1 for much of 2007.
Other F1 drivers who got a notable result in WSbR are Tiago Monteiro (2nd in 2004) and Markus Winklehock (3rd in 2005). World Series by Renault has been a pretty influential series over the years.
so time to register the name before Bernie does it :-)
none of those names are as important as Kovalainen and Montagny. None of them Not a one.
Hey Mr C, Cosworth think they'll be competitive.
Also, is it wrong that this bit:
"Cosworth has already begun recruiting extra track support and engine build staff for its F1 programme, having kept on much of the engineering brains that helped make its 2006 engine such a success."
Makes me think they have brains in jars?
ah, but we felt like we was right there.
hmmm...
"There is not enough time for us to do a re-tune and extend the life of the engines. So we need to stay with the agreed number of eight engines."
so, someone is suggesting that engines might have to last even longer, and that eight per year is too many? have i missed another cost cutting brainwave somewhere?
oh wait, it's a fota thing.
still political maneuverings going on then.
too many Cosworth articles today all over the place so I am not sure where I read it, but some of them said something about FOTA idea for 5 engines per season per driver. not sure if that was a typo or what
In something I noticed today, that may mean I pay a little bit too much attention, as well as driving the 2008 car in Moscow, Heikki was wearing the 2008 cap. (Compare with the 2009 model)
Hello everybody... :D
Morning!!
Morning all
looks like we will have some sun eclipse here tomorrow
Ari has been questioning Todt's african jaunt.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/5873385/Ari-Vatanen-lets-rip-as-race-for-FIA-presidency-goes-into-overdrive.html
More interestingly though Ari apparently expects Michael Boeri to stand. This could throw the whole thing open...
Gooooood morning everybody, how are we all today?
I dont know how how thought he would get away with it! :P
Well spotted... nice to know i am not crazy or the only one who sees these things :D
Like a banana in a jacuzzi...
...Bobbing along
im confused, whats wrong with it?
Morning sire.
That just sounds rude :P
hey guys, you have some scam message posted on your drop.io
Hahaha... It wasn't meant to be!
This looks like an interesting business opportunity. I have heard of people getting these oppertunity's before
Very fortunate he posted here!
Just a shame he left no contact details!
Sounds like a good business opportunity ;)
On BOL the other day they quoted a survey that said 12% of people still click spam emails!
I wouldn't have noticed that even if I tried. ;)
Or divide the anti-Max vote. Not good.
I'm already bored!
none of those names are as important as Kovalainen and Montagny. None of them Not a one. {Comment #164}
They still have some significance to F1, if perhaps less so to Sidepodland ;)
its old!
Todt in power wouldn't be boring, I think...
Yes but i'm not sure it wouldn't be boring for hte right reasons...
hey everyone :) i don't suppose anyone knows how to fix a printer that has an 'ink system failure' do they?...
Indeed. Which is why this development concerns me.
If its a cheap one... buy a new one? :P
You can get printers for the same price as ink cartridges!
sadly it's not cheap :( tis a lovely hp photosmart printer that prints lovely photos. sadly while i was sleeping yesterday early in the morning mum used it and erm... i now need to fix it :(
ah yes, parents do have a habit of doing things like that
does this site help?
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com
If not in guess you need a service...
they certainly do... it's the first decent printer we've had... and not the first they've broken... :s
ooooo!! thank you! :) hopefully they will help ;)
this
No worries...
I am off to look at a gym... Scary!
The problem with the presidential vote is that in all probability in 5 years time we'll all dislike whoever wins anyway
Don't even think about using it....excersise is bad for you...apparently
But we already dislike Todt. Why wait 5 years to figure that out? ;)
and... it's outside!
So Todt is just less hassle really, why hate somebody new?
because there's this small, small chance that we might NOT hate Vatanen or Boeri after all?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f_HsjpSVaI
holding out for a hero, indeed. ;)
You can find some instructions here
Sounds like me - I wants the change and then I gets bored with the new change and then I wants more change.
In the case of Todt to me its still no change.
More seriously while Ari has made some impressive moves in his candidacy he does need to clarify his position with respect to green issues. This does not necessarily mean to bring KERS back - it is only one issue in complex production line.
Well Anthony Davidson won't be commentating in Hungary this weekend, he's driving a Nissan Skyline GT-R at the Spa 24 hours...
Who's replacing Brundle for the weekend?
Brundle
Herbert is replacing Davidson
Johnny Herbert is taking Ant's place with Croftie apparently.
I thought Brundle was also away?
Awesome!
Brundle isn't going on holiday this year, the BBC don't like him having a race off.
Yeah he's going to be at the race apparently...
There's a four week gap, French GP has gone AWOL... he doesn't need to miss a race!
Can I miss Valencia?
Not until you've done at least 4 more blog posts
*runs and hides* I have done two since I promised I would do more :)
That's more than I've done
you needs a graph like us:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/01/03/whos-working-the-hardest/
You know, back then you said:
"Hopefully she’ll be able to continue the upward trend in productivity into 2009."
I guess we didn't account for F1 basically becoming an unmentionable! :)
Oh nice idea but I already know the answer to that and it's not me :(
the comment "Let’s get serious here, whoever pulled the most all-nighters is the most important statistic isn’t it?" scares me as I realise in 4 months on Sidepodcast I have done more all-nighters than I did in 4 years at uni. Oops.
Jolly?
:)
very oops!
Don't make me laugh
Looking at this year's totals for both of us - March was an all-time high and it has been a downward trend ever since.
Fizzy?
Darn that F1 season getting in the way...
Now I am having a laugh :D
sounds like the sport in general.
OOOOH looking at the new birthdays calendar it reminds me that Fernando + Nelsons are coming up. Although Nelsons appears to not be on there, I just know its close to Anandos :D I hope there is cake in the paddock this weekend.
Ah, see, I went through a list of F1 winners.
fair enough :D The 18th of October Finnish sandwich is in October and thats all that matters
Kovalainen and Raikkonen are not a sandwich!
they are the bread! the 18th is the meat!
I remember that :D
http://theoatmeal.com/quiz/twitter_addict
55% for me.
:D
34% :(
63%
Excuse me while I get some life.
14% :(
27%
22%
You've only been around 4 months? Golly gee, you seem to have been around much longer. :D
55% for me too apparently.
31%
Sidepodfurniture ;)
:D
Af'noon. I'm not here. Actually its lunchtime so I sort of am. Will try the Twitter thing when I get home.
Mercury nommos are out:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8160449.stm
I hope Florance and the machine get it. :D
Rooting for Kasabian. :)
Is this because lots of discussion is in the Daily?
ehehehe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95j-Vr7sZec&NR=1
for me, no. there's nothing worth blogging about. i think the lack of testing may be killing my interest in f1.
usually about now we'd be watching times in spain and times in italy. posting pics of fiery cars and crashed piquets.
f1 this year is official disappointing. i just decided.
Oh no!
:'(
Doing some transcribing....Joe just referred to a "lunatic Finn"
he is so off my Christmas card list.
fact
tis okay though. creating better live shows is still interesting.
:D
there's always next year...
:D
phew!
Just decided? We all got there ages ago!
This time last year we were marvelling in some fantastic drives and who would challenge for the championship (there were still 4 drivers in it).
This year we have politics or pandas...!
agreed. is testing coming back?
Only between race weekends, for me. As you say, we normally have things to tide us over..
not sure, TBH. but given the cost-cutting mania that's hit them, i doubt it.
Like appearing on the Planet-IRL podcasts? ;)
no. i just decided to make it official.
And what's wrong with panda's?
There's still 4 in it now. For now, anyway.
ahhh, there's always 2011 then.
i'll enjoy this season for all of you then.....
Nothing at all, except we deduced that pandas cannot ride MotoGP bikes or drive F1 cars :(
Officially official or will you change your mind and decide the season is good? ;)
I need proof!!
Well we've seen that oanda's can podcast (christmas party) so I wouldn't be too sure about that
But you and Lukeh are not exactly singing from the rooftops either, are you?
I think it alright. Just that. Theres only been three good races, Australia, China and Germany. Compare that to last season where it was more or less the whole season. Not the greatest seasons in recent memory, but there is some sort of fight for the championship coming up (hopefully).
Its just in between races, my god its boring.
Nicely done. :-)
Even some of the races have been boring
Just listening now ;)
Agreed - I'm sure you'd say that 2002 or 2004 was way more boring than this.
good thing i have work to distract me in between races, then...
I normally have school. Damn the summer holidays and f1 holidays coinciding.
2002 was OK... 2004 was a dark time!
2009 is definitely better, but with the knowledge that had the FIA not effed with the rules so much we could have had a season like 2008 it's a dark stain in the season :(
It has always been like that. I really like this year.
Interesting. How come?
I have sleep
I was wondering if I was losing interest in F1 as well
I am losing interest in F1. I may even watch the race in Danish this weekend (as I can't be bothered with this feed nonsense!)
Don't let Max and his henchmen win. :(
But otherwise they won't learn.
Don't worry, I will still watch it in English later I think and I'll still be bothering you lot in the comments...)
agreed. fota are encouraging the lack of testing too, so it's not only max.
i think teams have become lazy.
Seriously, Max and co should be worried if the diehard fans are losing interest .. there's not much chance of the casual fan sticking around then
FOTA and Ari are on the case already. They are fighting for us. Why abandon them now?
Different people up front. Change of the guard. It was needed. Plus the development battle between Brawn and RBR, with an ever-catching McLaren. It ain't over.
ah but casual fans always watch the racing, unless its schumacher esq boring
how do you mean?
i'm loving Brawn being on top (obviously) but i'm also loving having a mix up in the order. it's brilliant to see Vettel and Webber doing great as well. Plus having Massa on the podium last race was lovely too. We've had some brilliant qualifying sessions, and some great races. Yes the usual f1 politics have stepped up a notch into unbearable but the racing and the teams have always been the attraction to the sport for me. Plus... Max may finally be replaced with someone much better...
FOTA are not fighting for us. They are fighting for themselves.
i would disagree with that. i think they really do see a need to cut costs, and dropping testing is one way of doing that. i think the teams realized they need their windtunnel and CFD more than they need the track time...
But we have returned to the mid-90's where the guy in front wins and nobody can overtake :(
but they are listening to us. doesn't that count for something?
How are they listening to us?
how do you mean they are listening to us?
but the fans can't see that and don't care. they picked the wrong cost-cutting solution.
I'm not sure what mid-90s you remember? A lot of the racing then was pretty good.
Because you haven't said much like you have above lately? Dunno. Are you happy? I thought you'd be exctatic?
are they? about not banning refuelling?
not in the slightest.
The fans who went to see F1 tests are not allowed inside the CFD rooms are they?
Hmm, 92-95 wasn't too hot for action was it?
i haven't been invited, anyone else?
I'll be honest, I know of quite a few people on other places I go on want the ban on refuelling.
So do a lot of people here. But have they ever actually asked?
my point is, they haven't listened to the fans, they haven't asked.
they only ask fans the questions it suits them to ask.
Only because Brawn is faster in some conditions, RBR is faster in opposing conditions. The rest of the field is overtaking just fine.
Well I don't have the top secret clearance, so not me either. I doubt even 90% of the staff in a team are allowed either :(
two things:
1. they mentioned that they would indeed use the fan surveys that the FIA ran. yes, saying it is different from doing it, but i think they will indeed use it. blind faith on my end? maybe.
2. FOTA mentioned a number of things that they'd prioritize as part of a breakaway - most notably, bringing down ticket prices. the breakaway is no more (at least, it seems to be the case), but i think they see the reason why there is a need to bring prices down. when flavio was saying they don't want to race in front of half-empty stands, surely he was sincere in saying that?
but they let us in the garages during testing.
FIA survey?
But that is people voting with their feet. Which is what we're saying we will do. It's not listening, it's reacting.
i was told not to take pictures inside the garage when the engine cover was off
I thought we were talking about FOTA?
Did they openly publish the results .. I didn't see them?
But you were IN the garage.
and allowed to look at the engine with the cover off.
ah, but i was only there because Renault publicised an event in paris that didnt happen, i went off to paris, nothing there. They did it because i complained on their forum.
I wonder if we wrote to one of the teams if they'd let us visit en masse
i've loved every second of this season so far, and can honestly say there isn't a race this year, that i can remember, that i've found boring so far. it's probably because of Brawn and stuff, but i'd easily watch each race again and still like it.
ok. but they didn't invite into the wind tunnel, did they?
92 was so-so, true. 93 had some good racing, most notably Donington. 94 was dark, for obvious reasons. 95 was OK - they had great racing at Silverstone, Spa, and the Nurburgring.
it could be better, true, but i don't think it's as bad as you think it is...
if i recall, FOTA said they'd use the FIA survey because the FIA themselves never really did use it.
only bit i wasnt allowed to see
Okay. I look forward to that then.
hmmm. you may be on to something there, jackie...
Depends which, and you'd probably have to pay
What about a sidepodtrip to Red Bull or Brawn?
For web developers, you might be interested in this:
HTML5 and the Future of the Web
already using it right here good sir.
the audio you hear in doohickey is html5, hence why you need a modern browser.
couldn't hurt to ask.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theeditors/2009/07/the_end_of_fortress_journalism.html
A BBC blog post about journalism, actually the post isn't much but the comments are fascinating.
With that, I must go.
Me also,
Ciao
See ya guys
That's exactly my point. Le BOL facebooked some testing videos from March ... That's almost half a year ago!
Good for you. Maybe it's because I don't know how you felt about last year then..?
Actually, here's a perfect example. Teams are worried about the way the calendar is shaping up and wanna talk to Bernie. Mario says: "It is always a matter of finding what the right balance is between what we can earn, what Bernie can earn, and what is important for the market."
Where are the fans on his list of importance!?
Like 99,9% of the planet ... but in theory anyone can go and see testing!
Exactly ... Mario should have said "We are concerned that none of our loyal and crazy fans in Germany, France or the UK may see a race in 2010 at the expense of 10 chinese children and a couple of mad Aussies..."
Isn't the fans the market?
No, the TV money and the car companies and sponsors are. The fans are just a nuisance to these people!
maybe... the last couple of years have been tough being a honda/JB fan, after the winter i would have just been happy to see the team race, let alone win...
When the ratings come down, they'll be begging us to come back.
Doesn't read that way.
@Christine
Thought you might like this article "Building a den could save a panda"
http://bit.ly/19fDcO
Hmmm... I guess it's a matter of how one sees things. I'm a bit more optimistic in terms of how this will end up. Time will tell.
It's already going down, isn't it? They haven't exactly begged yet...
TV money will disapeer if we aere forced to watch cars race in valencia every week.
Sponsors wont be interested in a sport which mainly takes place in asian swamplands and graveyards in turkey.
The fans will get what some of what they want, because thats what makes the teams money. Bernie will get some of what he wants because thats what makes him money
I mean dramatically
But we aren't getting what we want are we? We keep moaning because something is missing, taken away or we are not listened to...
we will always moan though.. it will never be perfect, it's just at the moment it's almost as far away from perfect as it can be..
I hope I'm not being rude when I ask this, but when was the last time us fans have really been happy?
What would be interesting to find out is if between then and now, have the TV ratings suffered as well?
that's what i was thinking.
I was happy last year. I loved last year. I want it back.
I was happiest between 2005-2008. Wasn't perfect, but it was good times...
We moaned all last year about the FIA
But the point is they aint listening!
Thats because the teams haven't had a say.. its been done by Bernie's dictat. With the teams struggling to get anything they want. Now they appear to be negotiating with each other
One positive thing is that Bernie for a long time has wanted to have more races, but the teams have refused. Now that testing is gone we could be seeing 21-23 races in future seasons.
But we loved the racing!
same here. i was happy before the owg started fiddling and then the fia fiddled some more.
I think there are too many races on the calendar. If Bernie had his way, we'd be like NASCAR!
i'd pick quality over quantity, though. might not also be practical from a cost perspective.
We did.
Yes but that was a small part of the year.
We do a weekly show, there needs to be something to talk about. If it was entirely perfect, we would be back doing ten minute podcasts again.
At least back then I didn't feel like the sport was fundamentally going a way I didn't like.
You could have 12 good races and it would be better...
I think there are no where near enough... 30 per season seams reasonable to me.
You're trying to kill us, yes?
they are listening to a few things surely.. okay well FOTA are aware of a few things anyway aren't they? i mean look at the list of things their break away would have when that was announced. most of the things on their list were things that the fans wanted right? like cheaper entrance fees and stuff. surely that proves they know we are here...
There are so many parallels between the 2009 F1 car and when NASCAR introduced the car of tomorrow...
:D
You'd get used to it :P
Where would you hold 30 races without things getting really boring?
We could start putting races on the beach? Different sufaces, like rally.
at least we still get different competitive cars here. over there, 1 make of car is thrashing the rest.
Whereas two makes are in F1?
Well Im glad you asked!
2 in Australia, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, UAE, South America. =18
5 in north america
China,
Malaysia
Singapore
Bahrain
Belgium
South Korea
South Africa
30 Races and a real world Championship :D
Sure - 2 is still better than 1. And I think Ferrari and McLaren are catching on...
Two in the UAE
Oh, gotcha, Dubai has one doesn't it.
I'd have 1 more in South America and one less in north Amercia personally.
There's not enough proper tracks to cover all of those though...
TriviaTuesday: Name 2 cases where the #F1 race was run in a country other than that of the Grand Prix name ex San Marino GP - Imola Italy
It's a competition on Twitter - from NewsOnF1. Am surprised no one's gotten this yet - it's pretty easy.
This is negociatable.
BTW i counted Monaco as being in france... :P
Hmm, I think there is actually.
I can think of 1.
Yup - just look at all those other F1 circuits that could be hosting races. Adelaide, Paul Ricard, Hockenheim, Imola, Jerez...
Where would be a problem?
The americas maybe, but i am sure tracks could be upgraded in north america and i think they are building one in Argentina...
I know both - shame I have no Twitter. Still, am not that desperate. :)
I know them... whats the prize?
Looking now...
As things stand at the moment with fees and stuff you'd have problems with most of the places.
If you are thinking of old F1 tracks then you need to also consider upgrades required..
Fees could be much less with twice the number of races though...
Having issues with Net. Argh. Anyway, link is here: http://newsonf1.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2125
But we are talking about Bernie, whose logic is double the circuits = double the money!!!
just put a new transcript on the drop.io, it's hanging out with Mr Hargreaves James (Esq)
If you have more races it will compensate for dude races/circuits like Valencia - I think 18 is fine, could be increased to 22 as the maximum. Not really feasible to have more.
Have enjoyed this season a lot - guess I think it is good that different teams are dominating. Surprised that I even like knowing the fuel weights before the race. Qualifying is really good but I hate how they are making tyres more of an issue than they should be with the two sets. Just take suitable tyres for the track, if need be ration them, but let the teams choose which tyre to use in qualifying and racing.
I wish that guy had left some contact details!
Thanks Amy :)
Sadly, Mr Hargreaves James (Esq) has left the building.
and I just noticed theres a paragraph on page one missing a Christine: at the start :D
In theory he would get more from tv rights and circuit sponsorship. It would put a lot less pressure on circuit owners. More races would also likely result in cheaper tickets.
And there i was hoping to have another (Esq) to hang out with :(
having letters after your name makes you big and important apparently. I introduce myself to strangers as Amy, BCom. (I don't really)
Technicaly i am then Nick (Esq) BSocSc
:P
ooh almost midnight. If I go to bed now, it still counts as early. Night all!
Night, Amy. :)
night Amy
Night Amy!
night
G'night Amy.
Whoops... accidently won that newsonf1 quiz...
Thats 2 prizes in a week... I am enflamed!
That was you? Cool! :D
One for being first and one for being last. That's quite the achievement! :D
What was the other answer?
Luxembourg @ Nurbergring, and Swiss GP @ Dijon
Luckily they mentioned the Luxembourg gp last weekend and i looked at Dijon when i was searching for somewhere to put the French GP a couple of weeks back!
Ahh, wouldn't have got the Dijon one.
haha, thanks for the tip off about the quiz...
You didnt enter?
Bruno is on twitter.. did everyone know?
http://twitter.com/BSenna
As I said, no Twitter. :) What's the prize, tho?
Ah, you have to get one now!
i went for the alarm clock
http://newsonf1.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2125
Goes well with the official PF coffee mug! :D
Your winning everything at the moment aren't ya.
ZOMG you guys have to see this - it's freakishly awesome in Lukehshopping proportions!
I'm scared
It reminds me of a weird article I once saw that morphed people with animal faces... freaked me out!
:D
I think I am listening to the strangest song ever ... a lesbian version of 'Baby Got Back' ... hmm...
Who is Brawn's reserve driver this weekend then?
\or will they fly Ant over if he is needed?
Coulthard? Baby Hair?
good question. not sure they have any other drivers, probably just hoping they wont need a reserve driver.
But they are redbull drivers, surely they would just try to delibratly crash into the other brawn!
Not having a reserve driver is the team showing how to lose the race... any talk of this subject is just bla bla bla...
Happend with BMW when Klien was elsewhere for an endurance race.
EVERYBODY PANIC!!!!
do you think he's told them?
Er Ross... you know how you said I should take a holiday, well, I'm off to Belgium this weekend...
Something like that?
If Red Bull score as well this weekend as they have in the past two races and Brawn do no better than they have for these same races - Red Bull will be leading the Constructor's championship. In the last two races Red Bull have scored 36 points to 16 points for Brawn and currently there is 19.5 points between them.
well... the BBC know...and you'd think someone on the team may check news sites of something... i'm sure someone told them :P i wonder if we will see Wurz in the paddock this weekend?
Meant to say in the next two races sorry (this weekend and the next race). The chase has close up incredibly.
Haha, have you seen 'In Bruges' ?
No I haven't...
ah... well they have a 'holiday' in belgium
Its a very funny dark comedy
Oh yeah the hitman film, right?
Yeah, thats the one :D
okay i'm off to go venture into the real world and see a film. will probably be back tomorrow morning or earlier if i'm lucky enough to use my friends internet connection ;) bye!! x
see ya lou!
I think cricket people are better at twitter than the f1 people, great rivalry between the tweeters in the BBC and sky comentry boxes here http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/fivelivebreakfast/2009/07/who_is_crickets_twitter_king.html
Back again.
I got 66% on the Twitter addictiveness scale.
I can be Pat MAAT if I jumped through some bureaucracy.
Lou's gone which means my sidepodshift starts :D
howdy all
hi jon. :)
which probably means i should be off to bed too. night, all!
Hi Jon. You can hear a pin drop.
night
ahaa :D
night!
Quiet eh?
Yeah. In fairness I'm usually catching up on comments at this time so I don't usually pop up 'live' for another hour.. and I caught up at lunch.
Time for a short podcast before the TdF highlights come on.
I have just discovered that all ten series of Friends are available on iTunes. Am wondering if I can ask for Sidepoddonations for this as well as the whole radio/charity thing. :)
How much are they?
I need to do the donations thing as well...
£20 each.
http://www.ioogame.com/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=146&gclid=COSzjtOm55sCFUYA4wodqRSD6A
This will save you £145 :D
A DV... what now?
I was thinking of suggesting the all-series box set because I'm sure I've seen it cheaper in HMV.
Buy the DVD box set, get a DVD to MP4 convertor, put on itunes...put on ipod.
Sorted
By the time I have done all that for ALL ten series... it will probably cost more than buying direct from iTunes. Especially if I assign a value to my time.
Buy the DVD box set. Put DVD into computer. Press play on media player.
Do you invoice Mr C for the time he spends with you?
did we know the driver of the fia medical car is tweeting?
http://twitter.com/alanvdm/
too right.
that is uber cool
Then it's not on my iPod. Boo.
You get to enjoy it on a proper size screen though.
I like the option of doing either.
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/551228/PHILIPS-PET723-
?
Still saved yourself £50
I sense from this conversation that there will be no Sidepoddonations forthcoming for the Friends Fund.
Harumph.
Ah right.
i agree with you, itunes downloads are the only way to go.
however, it would be slightly odd, me donating money to you...
I like Jon's solution.
Hehehe. I guess I'd better just save, like a grown up.
jon has plenty of time on his hands. i'd rather christine was doing something more productive.
i thought children saved up and adults put it on the plastic?
I do agree, for some things, it would be easier for itunes.
*Runs and hides from the truth*
Oh.
No not that one, the little telly one.
now id the dvd came with a itunes encoded version on it as well... then we'd be talking.
I did that and it took my years to pay it off. You don't wanna do that.
oh i see. that is quite cute.
but only if the adults have the money in the first place, otherwise that would be irrisponsible wouldnt it.
*yes Mr Waldock*
Although I'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't own a portable media player other than a silly little 128mb mp3 thing.
hehe, If you watch enough E4 you wont have to worry about paying!
Infact if you buy a tv usb dongle you can probably set it up to automaticly record them all as they go round (2 per day) in Mp4 format.
So thats 15 pounds insead of 400 ;)
yes mr. waldock.
Mega Bytes? what are these things
But on iTunes I just have to *click*.
I can put three whole albums on it!
Yes but this would mean watching E4.
plus adverts.
My way you just click 4 or 4 times.
Then Wait..........................................................
plus their stupid endlessly repeated self-promos and the logo in the corner
well done, have a milky bar
You can fast forward them...
This way will also enable you to record lots of f1.... :P
that is quite annoying.
nick, this is the best you got?
Hahahaha. I don't think that's a selling point right about now :)
it also means you will end up in Bernies office for being highly illegal, which is bad.
Recording it off the telly on to your own DVR is fine.
Only if you keep it for a short-ish time, if you kept it indefinitely that would be bad
I know loads of people who keep stuff they have recorded, i dont think you can start policing that, distributing it would be illegal, but keeping highlights programmes for personal reference cant be?
That quiz prize i won is from an Australian forum... ooops
But most programs aren't highlights, i know it cant be policed, but its like recording songs of the radio too.
Sings
I'll be there for you...
...when the rain comes to pour...
Thinks
What an unfortunate evening for Katherine to leave me at home alone
Says
Evening Everyone :)
yippeee!
hullo.
Evening Alex
I haven't dared look at the price yet...
Why do things have to cost money?
Yay!
Hello!
you know you want it...
what be it?
All of Friends - on iTunes.
ah yes
£20 x 10.
Ah... Well that's quite a bit innit?
I might buy a few at a time perhaps :)
After all it is pay day tomorrow - which also means it's Sidepodradio donation day! :)
This is really bizzare... Apple people confuse me!
£20 is a lot for 1 season of an old tv show... Dont they offer it cheaper if you buy them all at once?
Do these things get cheaper over time on itunes?
I have come up with a potential solution for the times when I'm playing music on Sidepodradio but we don't have vision. I have recorded some video which could play without sound while the songs are on.
I have done a bit of searching and I can't find any way of exporting the visulizer to video I can upload. But this could work.
I'm not sure all of my shows will be music shows. I have some other ideas... I just need to work out if they are possible before I confirm anything.
convenience sir.
one click and you own it. no going outside, no packaging to store forever, and it works in your house and on the road.
Is it you dancing with the big red clock? :D
Not always, but sometimes they do.
However, each episode is almost £2 so if you buy the whole series, you are saving over £20.
You can buy all the DVDs for £76.47 from amazon instead.
My ideal place to watch a quick episode of friends is on my iPhone while commuting. I certainly don't need Hi-Def for that. And to convert 30 DVDs onto the computer and then break out all the episodes, and then tag them all correctly into series and then have them on my iPhone... Well... Maybe I'm lazy but I'd rather be doing something creative with my time.
that counts as packaging?
hmmm.. i guess.
DVD's are much cheaper though, i got 112 hours of west wing for £40!
But i think i can do the same with my PS3/PSP using standard DVD's and blu ray...
Yes sorry I phrased that really badly. I was agreeing with you...
Even if I bought them on DVD I'd have to rip and store them because I only really want to watch them on my iPhone.
Oii! Mr C it's the magic "read more" button LOL
And not having to do that and not having to have them clogging up the shelves would be worth more than the difference in price.
also, and i hate to say it, but...
your friends/family cannot "borrow" your itunes downloads and then forget to return them, break them, or just plain steal them.
Blast! I so meant to borrow the spare Blackberry at work today to test F1 Minute.
I guess i am old fashioned. I am actualy happy to pay a bit more for a game from a shop than download it from Steam or PlaystationStore
ahh. been looking all over for one of them.
you found it then?
ARGH!!! Ok i retract my ipod/itunes compliment, i hate them all. It just froze! BOO!
yes but I didn't find a "more" button
I got distracted today... Too many meetings. Fourstar and one of my bosses are both going on holiday in a few days so there's loads going on.
oops.
I was expecting to see it underneath the follow comments button y'see d'oh
In the interests of balance, because this is always a massively one-sided conversation. What other services are available, other than iTunes?
in the US you have hulu. in the uk... umm...
Digital download definatly looks to be the way its going though.
The games companies are trying to fight it though with packs like this!
http://kotaku.com/5314678/modern-warfare-2-prestige-edition-comes-with-prestige-price
Hello all
Nobody else at the moment unfortunatley. And that really is a shame.
i can't find any.
Good evening Mr Roy!
Why does anyone need to download Friends when there are constant re-runs on TV? It is on practically every day.
We don't have a TV?
Yes, I'm all for competition - as long as that doesn't split the available content between platforms.
Hi Steven
I want to watch it on my phone.
*waves*
4OD?
amazon must be planning something similar, to match their mp3 service, but i've not heard about it yet.
Its not on there i dont think
That just sounds bizarre.
Jackie,
Did Lou speak to you about the quiz? She was considering it last night after a little persuasion. I told her she should talk it over with you.
I think there is a service coming to the PS3.
I belive there is a system on the Xbox, but its just for rentals
I guess Friends must be like Bernie.
What about for people who don't have hundreds of pounds to spend on a gaming system?
itunes is free
Nope, not heard from her. I will mail her tomorrow as I see she's gone out to the real world tonight... is that allowed?
It's difficult, there does still seem to be a lot of innovation from Apple at the moment. But still there are big problems (The Apple TV menu layout for a start off). However think of it like the dominance of IE6. IE6s dominance for such a long time actually was, in many ways, a good thing for the internet because suddenly everyone knew what was expected. Now of course we need to make it die.
Apple are in the phase of defining the standard. Once that happens somebody will make a more open version which does everything that Apple's does and we'll have competition.
They aren't just gaming systems any more.
Home multimedia centres :D
I thought you said it cost £200?
Does it? The screen is easily big enough for something like Friends. There is no way I'd watch a movie like that though.
the application is free to download. unlike buying a ps3. the content isn't free.
and that doesn't answer my request for competitors to a monopoly, which is ironic given the way Apple fans have acted over the last 15 years
Is she crazy? That can be so dangerous.
:D
As I said, I don't believe there is one.
damn you be a hard to please ;)
I think we discussed this last night with the iphone.
I dont think itunes is a problem as long as it is open. If they limited which ISP's can access itunes it will be.
It's not really a monopoly though, because other people could do it. They just don't.
they do, just not in this country.
The problem with monopoly's is that they make it virtually impossible for anyone to do anything which threatens the monopoly.
Look at what happened to netscape
Yes. It is is a phone. You don't watch TV shows on a phone.
I don't believe it is impossible for someone to start digital TV downloads. Like Mr C said, Amazon must be right there.
A monopoly is an industry in which barriers to entry are high. And I had asked you 5 years ago what Apple's movie sales business was going to look like you'd have looked at me like I was mad. Those aren't high barriers to entry. People just need to compete.
I had a mobile tv with a screen smaller than the iphones though! :D
you can't really be sure that until you've tried it though can you?
the problem you have are the movie studios. they're frightened, greedy and stupid.
I find it interesting how roles have reversed!
I went outside, short sleeved, and it poured down. Supid weather.
:D
Perhaps, but look at apples poition. If they said tomorrow the only way you can sell though itunes is to sign an exclucivity agreement, the content owners would do it becuase there arent any other options.... and suddenly competition is 200 times harder.
I am about to invalidate my argument, for PC's and TV's at least as sky and BT both operate on demand digital download stores!
so alex... have you bought it yet?
I like my ignorance.
that isn't true. not for the movie industry.
apple have the music industry over a barrel, even with amazon. but not hollywood.
New version of iTunes and Safari are downloading for some reason and while they are doing that iTunes in unavailable.
It has been raining hard here all day... has only just cleared.
I see a certain French driver got a mention albeit brief in Joe's blog.
Several music companies, annoyed with Apple, have given a lot of exclusive deals to Amazon.
It dried down at bit when I went out, poured down half way.
is joe on the naughty step too?
I've got the BT one! I am partly in the right century!
And whoever it was, NBC maybe, that pulled out of the iTunes store and only agreed to return when variable pricing was agreed on.
didn't know that. amazon sales don't count towards the charts yet do they?
Please save me. I'm having to wait in the hairdressers while my mum has her hair done. Thank god for t'iPhone.
He was talking about Loeb and mentioned he finished 2nd at Le Mans with Franck.
i think they must, because most download companys do
ha! awesome timing sir ;)
Mr C... Although the main site is down... I have the google cache... Don't you think we need a 3D sidepodcast?
http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:66P5hnF_UbYJ:www.satine.org/archives/2009/07/11/snow-stack-is-here/+http://www.satine.org/archives/2009/07/11/snow-stack-is-here/&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari
But anyways, how are we all? :)
The charts still exist?
:) :) :)
Yes I did notice the Apple convo going on before posting. :P
hehe. i think we might.
i heard youtube are playing around with 3d video uploads. interesting sidepodtimes ahead ;)
Pat here you are... Evidence you can watch TV on your phone...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/video-15-wmv
does anyone have the domain iheartalex.com? i think we may need it :)
Oooooh... you rang?
Mr C, one feature I really want implimented is more terms to filter out, cos I'm really bored of any Apple conversations.
Why not weheartalex.com? :P
improvements to search are coming but not for a while i'm afraid.
Who's Alex?
even better. christine?
I still dont understand why things that dont physically exist aren't cheaper than ones that are! :P
Which is it to be cos I ain't getting both.
you're actually going to buy it?
umm, i like scott's suggestion. anyone else?
Oops .. THAT Alex .. sorry Dr Giggles :D
because we're willing to pay that price i guess.
the value must be what they think they can charge, because as i said the other day, one show costs about five cents to deliver. even if you factor in server costs and support costs, it's still only comes to a matter of pence per video.
but we're still buying them. or at least trying.
I'm sure that's all lovely :-)
I wasn't saying you couldn't. I was saying it sounds odd.
ahhh, we have to try this!

Welcome to my world circa 2002.
love it.
earlier actually
Ha :)
On the face of it neither would I, but you have to factor in the retail situation at the moment. There are sales everywhere. Shops are desperate for cashflow.
You honestly don't have to buy either! Very sweet sentiment though :)
Sorry, I did miss the comment where you downloaded you playing the tv on the iphone before I opened my big gob
I need to clarify this...
I don't have any problem at all with Apple, they've come up with some awesome stuff and if I were offered a great deal I'd probably take it.
I just don't see why I should be locked in to one provider, particularly when you hear tales of HDDs being scanned and the scan physically removing the files from the computer.
The 2002 comment is about the reverse argument which has been going on for as long as I can remember, why Apple people didn't want to be locked into using MS. I had arguments about it before I ever even came online. The pro/anti Apple thing has been going on for me for 14 years and I grew tired of it a long, long time ago.
amazon did exactly that with kindle this week.
with great power...
shoulda added a linky.
this girl i know wrote a blog post, about the other stuff she does.
i wish i did 'other' stuff!
Fair enough. Didn't hear about that because I've never heard of Kindle.
Can't beat a good'ol book i find.
not sure it's available in this country (you spot a pattern?).
my point wasn't that amazon are evil too, it's just that the whole of the media industry is being redefined right now. from music, to movies, to books, to games and everything in between.
to me, it's not fair to say "i'm not happy with this monopoly", when the rules are being rewritten every single day. we live in very interesting times (for me at least), and i'm gonna enjoy the ride.
sometimes i'll win and sometimes i'll lose, blueray may yet become the dominant platform and i'll look quite silly. maybe apple will screw it all up and you can say "i told you so".
right now i want to watch movies on a tiny little hand-held device, and i can. to me that's what it's all about.
On the Kindle front I don't see what else Amazon could have done about the situation except actually do a better job of PR.
Receiving stolen property is illegal. And there are no two ways about it. And if Amazon annoy book producers, if they start to think Amazon don't protect their copyright then they wont support Kindle.
I dont think it will be dominant, but you have to remember that for a lot of places digital distribution just simply isnt an option.
Where i went to school for example will never get high speed broadband, as it is so far from a major town and due to the fact the population is spread out it is unlikely to get a high speed wireless.
Cool stuff.
agreed, and apple would likely have to do the same, as would anyone else.
the problem is, people aren't used to that happening to them, so we're all having to learn as we go. in a couple of years it'll be second nature.
but you can at least see why the endless mentions of itunes gets annoying? cos that was my other point
Couldnt they have recovered the funds they passed on to the illegal publisher and pass them on to the rightfull owners?
I dont think seizing it back off the customer was really all that sensible for a platform which wants to be taken seriously
Hey all. It's been a while.
It looks like Brawn started a new fashion trend in sports.
Also, Sidepodale update: The intial batch wasn't to my standards so am going to make Mr. C's Irish Red, otherwise known as Sidepodale once again. I need to take photos and put on drop.io this time. I am also making a batch of oatmeal cream stout. It is going to be a strong one with an estimated 9.5% alcohol content according to my hydrometer.
i'm looking for things to talk about, because f1 isn't very interesting right now.
new media is interesting to me, maybe we should set up a separate site for such discussions? christine?
Definitely worth thinking about.
Certainly podcasting for me is more about the journey than the subject matter at the moment.
oh lordy.
Sidepodmedia?
Everything things they are buying something, because that's essentially what they are told - but this example proves that we aren't buying, we are renting. People need to get into thinking of it as online Blockbuster. That may or may not interest me in future, depends whether it is a film, song, or book I suppose.
I think legally they would have to take the books from customers as they didn't have th rights to them. What they should have doe is contacted the customers and tell them that the books would be removed in a few days rather than taking them and not mentioning it.
Can it be doohicky Compatible? :D
Perhaps. Perhaps you'd be better off with the odd thread on technical matters.
woah!! of this, i approve.
And I have to get this shirt
always.
oops. "Everyone thinks"
For once, Sidepod just wouldn't work!
50 Quid! And it has a bizarre Chinese gambling site on the front!
Strange as it may seem football clubs have been on that trend for a few years. I think Borussia Dortmund started it.
Thats just the away kit.
Sidepodradio?
nooooooooooo It would!
You are starting an empire...I cant wait until it gets to sidepodhats :D
I'm not mentioning anything about anything... But take a look at the different series pricing of the thing I'm not talking about. They aren't all the same and the order in which they aren't all the same is really weird!?!?
That's the brand and many brands don't make the slightest sense if you analyse them. Who would name an airline Virgin?
Oneday you will be able to advertise on actual sidepods!
Interesting.
If somebody stole your computer and then sold it on to somebody else. Would you think that a) the man that stole it should have to pay for what he stole from you or b) you should have your computer back?
Absolutely.
..which is all fine. New media discussions are interesting... until the stock response to any minor query is "get a Mac". This may or may not be the best platform at any given point, currently clearly it is.. but those of us - and I freely admit this may only be me - who choose something else and are by and large happy with it do get a bit tired of being hit with that stick, it adds nothing. I'm trying not to insult anyone here, this isn't personal and I'm not trying to single anyone out because lots of people do it.
Also bear in mind that we have sidepodspace, sidepodale and sidepodtime. What is the point to sidepod in any of those?
Isn't that what Cafe Press is for?
Agreed. And also I often get accused of being a Mac Fanboy when in fact I am just a fanboy :) I would like to say that none of the comments I have added tonight have been from a mac. They have been from my Dell and that video earlier was recorded on a Logitech webcam.
I wonder if there is an argument for following the stackoverflow.com model. They wanted people to stop talking about stackoverflow on stackoverflow. So they created meta.stackoverflow.com
i disagree. well, assuming we're talking about the same comment?
nick had various issues with his video production, all of which could be solved using a mac. all of which we could have helped him solve if he owned one.
therefore it was good advice and i stand by it as i did last night. you may not like my advice, but nick asked me, and that was my response.
This quiz is stupid. The last question doesn't even mention the doohickey which is the one we all do use first.
:)
which is fine if he had one, but buying a new £750 computer isnt a viable option, especially as he isnt likely to do that kind of thing lots, it was a one off i believe
Sorry... I was only talking about the "any minor query is 'get a mac'" part. Which I think is common on the internet.
But the advantage with Sidepodcast's discussion group is that they often know the answer to things. You have in depth knowledge and were trying to help in depth and your answer was 'get a mac'. That's different than a stock answer and therefore in my opinion totally valid.
true. but it's the best advice i had. given i had no other answers to his issues.
agreed.
i like that idea. i guess the issue is that right now that would 100% of time on the meta part of sidepodcast.
So anyway... What are people's exciting plans for the evening?
I have takeaway pizza coming and am thinking of watching a movie.
I have the latest bond movie available... Perhaps I am in the mood for moody explosions like that?
And I like having all my peeps in one place :)
beer!
I distinctly recall Mr C saying if you are going to be doing A LOT of video, then the mac is the way to go.
Nothing wrong with that, it's almost certainly right. Macs are known for their media-producing capabilities. But we were talking about downloading and consuming new media, not producing it.
then thats fair enough, i wasnt part of that bit of the conversation, but he didnt want to do lots of video, so it was probably more aimed at the windows users (or which ever OS he uses). i think Macs are good, and quite clearly they are alot better than most Windows computers, and if i had that kind of money i'd get one.
No one has said get a mac today have they?
I would really like to watch some west wing, but i really have no motivation or energy
Making stuff like this
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/rubs-jpg-2
Which beer have you selected?
I have gone with the wine option.
Oh I've had enough of this, I'm clearly not making my case well at all. See ya.
I always have energy for west wing :)
I have the energy to watch it, just not to get off the sofa
it doesn't have twigs in it :(
see ya Pat
that be very cool sir.
Desperately resists the temptation to say, "use iTunes" ;)
Aw man, thought I'd come back at the right time.
Nah, i have the whole box set, that would be pointless :D
No twigs? Or brambles? And you call yourself a man? ;)
Actually of course I drink both kinds of beer. Country and Western.
:P :D
Sorry that was only a joke... No more mentions honest!
Dinner time :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-135
So jealous right now, havent had a proper pizza in a long time
i had no idea drop.io could be used for such evil.
;)
Well a man doesn't get to my level of rotundness without a certain amount of sacrifice (and beer)
With great drop, comes great io.
Hmmm something went wrong there.
I have another 5 hours of work (doing a little dreamweaver magic with a website, followed by writing a brief on source based taxation of digital goods and going through the proof of our chamber magazine three or four times.
After that go home and clean up my mess from yesterday's beer brewing. Might catch up on my blog, do a little sidepodcasting while playing Fight Night on PS3. Somewhere, I need to fit in a quick run.
I went to cook a steak and apper to have created some sort of sidepodcivil war in my absence.
Ooops...*inserts link to "we didnt start the flame war" video*
*thinks better of it*
good lord! that doesn't make me feel lazy at all.
hehehe.
although now i may have to go listen...
some non family site language in that one methinks...
...but it does pretty much sum up the internet...
So pandas eat the wrong things. They are not too keen on breeding and now they need dens built for them. What next? Will they want us to babysit their cubs? Who would want to do that though?
All I can think of when I hear that is The Office US... it's rather strange.
Even the original song, all i can think of when I hear it is when they did it on that show! Shocking times. It's like Erasure and Wheatus concerning Little Respect...
I can't remember who originally said it but it's pretty clear that pandas are just teenage Goths. Lots of face paint and eyeshadow, hide in their rooms all the time, don't go out with anyone, and don't eat properly.
For Mr C's information it is now 9pm so he can go outside and look at stars.
but it's still day.....
oh.
Cant you do it inside?
Isnt there a partial eclipse coming soon?
I think someone gave them ipods and they have just zoned out since. I don't think they understand evolution and the effect lazing around munching on bamboo can hae on that.
There is a solar eclipse viewable form parts of Asia I think. I am sure F1 Wold mentioned it.
Wolf not Wold.
When I am getting a Star Trek computer I can tell what to do?
it's on the list.
:)
Ahahah.. Aren't Panda's in the racoon family?
(*Searching for a Cure song to complete the joke.*)
Close to Bamb-you?
ooooh dear :)
:)
The close thing I came to was the Hanging Garden. That what I get for not thinking out of the box.
I'm in need of cheering up, seen anything funny amusing oe weird that might fir the bill?
I wish I was on a Formula One team. I would love to tell my employer that I am giving up on this year work and will be focusing of stuff for next year.
I'm in need of cheering up, seen anything funny amusing orweird that might fit the bill? .. it's better without the spelling mistakes
:P
this is good
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEwM0Fnkg4A
haha I couldn't even get it right second time round .. I give up
How about a super cat who jumps into boxes.
:)
am searching for sisters of mercy songs that might be in some way panda related. i may not be the best person to ask.
I am reading through the comments about people being unhappy about this year and enjoying last year more. At the same time I am listening to the Debrief and Christine talking about Peadalo and I think I know why some people miss last year.
Dumbo flugels. You can't hate a year when Christine gets to say dumbo flugel every week.
excellent
although i thought starsailor - paw to the floor, might be a winner.
true story
:)
What about Kiss?
They have a song called "Christine Sixteen" could that be in any way related? ;)
I love Dan's video :D :D :D
she's not having ONE!
woot
That's true... It's best to have a pair :)
You wanna know how many songs there are with 'me' in it?
i know the shamen have a mr. c.
There are a bunch of songs by the Animals with "me" in it like:
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Bring it on home to me.
Don't bring me down
I looked up "Christine Panda and me" into the google and the third highest site is Christine's!
only 3rd?
http://www.last.fm/music/Panda/_/Christina
The first result i got was sidepodcast daily for the 17th of june
Which would suprise people looking for panda's called christine!
Also... http://www.pandapops.com/
Clearly the Panda's favorite band is the Bamboo Radleys
It's funny when you take these songs with me in the title and view 'me' in the third person instead of the first.
Songs like Big Star's 'When My Baby's is Beside Me' and Benny Goodman's 'When My Baby Smiles at Me' have a whole new meaning.
:)
:)
And their favorite song is "China in my paw" by T'Pau.
singing, wake up [to] bamboo?
i'll raise you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQgXccbxHbM
Ooh. Can I add that to my list?
i think so.
The problem is I don't think I know anything else about pandas....
'ello Mary P'oppins!
Nooooooo. You're forgiven because the character is basically the same.
West Wing makes me happy :D
-"Andy's pregnant, with twins"
"Are they yours?"
-"Yeah"
"Both of them?"
:)
Which one was that one then? Was it.......
oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yoooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuu...
Did you know that Baby's come with hats?
:)
Much better :)
I am a bit ahead of you...
Diving into the final ep of season 5
Is that the same unrealistic show about self rightious White House staffers or is it something else.
That would be it yes
Its very realistic. I read somewhere that Obama was a massive fan, apparently he modeled parts of his white house set up after Bartlets
Mwha actually no you're not, i've already see it once fully, and 4-5-6-7 twice. I just love these few episodes.
Doh!
But i will sit here smugly knowing i am enjoying it more :P
The season 6 (or is it 7) debate is so realistic to Obama, policys and everything. You'd think it was filmed recently
aha, tis likely :D
Why 4-5-6-7 twice? Something against Sorkin?
I may have seen the entire first series close to 10 times. The second series a lot, and so on down to the most recent season that I've only seen twice. But then I was rewatching as I was waiting for the next series to come out.
Apparently they modelled that character (i havent got to him yet) after obama, following his speech at the 04 democratic convention
I have never seen any of it ever
The guy who wrote it worked very closely with Obama in his run for Senate.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/21/barackobama.uselections2008
Nah, but we were watching it as a family, and my family watch it slow, so i watched 4-7 on my own, then watched it again when my family reached them.
me neither, but it sounds like we're missing out.
you SO are
Its some of the best tv i have seen, right up there with the sopranos.
the box set for the whole lot has been very cheap lately
uh-oh.
anddd, you can buy it on itunes ;)
It is simply the best tv show I have ever seen.
The writing from Aaron Sorkin is amazing. The dialogue goes so fast you can't believe it.
And Mr C if you need to get Christine interested it's also David Tennant's favorite show :)
we might have to check it out.
but the medium by which we do so shall remain secret.
Have i mentioned the walking and talking before?
They go round corners and everything!
ooooh ;)
hehe
That's very true. They are very good at the walking and talking!
oh that reminds me now of what I meant to do tonight...
Another Panda song...
"It doesn't matter if you're Black and White"
Never seen the Sopranos either
It is my ambition to one day write an f1 version of the west wing....
:P
Okay... So in the first ever episode of friends that I seem to be watching somehow for some reason Rachel reveals that the reason that she didn't marry Barry is because he looks too much like Mr Potato Head!
That's a bit mean for Buemi!
I always thought it was a shame that Maranello stopped before it really took off.
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/maranello/
They didnt really make it did they?
My idea would be to have characters loosely based on real people, but not so close its obvious, portraying the running of the sport...
Ahhh, I love it. Was trying to think of an F1 reference out of a gravy boat, but I couldn't do it.
Well no time like the present to start. And of course you could fo a 30 minute script conference on sidepodradio
ooooh, an f1 pilot.
Max Alexander-Movley and Bernald Ecclerock?
you've done this before...
Personal favourite of mine, Professor Marino Tessen
hahah. now you're giving lukeh idea.
No!
You have to come up with something better then. No saying no without suggesting an improvement
After i finish my screenplay and sell that to hollywood, they will be eagerly waiting for my follow up project so i will whip this out.
Twill be huge!
Don Vennis? Bravio Brevitory? Ross Brown?
We need to write this show.
Wasn't sure on the double barral on Max name either
:)
Mr Simon Alexander and Mr Paul Hammond ?
What's your screenplay?
Hold on, Stephanie De Molly Carly
This sounds good, but it is really not my show! :D
Stephanie De Monte Carlo?
Just as it is starting to come together you are going to back off. It needs your direction
would you narrate it though?
Brilliant.
DJ Allear
I havent even started yet!
Its an idea i had at uni and wrote on the back of pad of A4 during an especially boring political philosophy lecture...
haha, i supose i could!
And your not enlightening us on what it is?
You and Lukeh need to collaborate on something.
By the way, what on earth is going on this evening?
I wish I had these ideas and now an A4 drawing of crappy doodles :(
Its set at the begining of the cold war...
Its a drama...
Thats all ya getting!
how long ago did you start, and what have ya achieved since? we can help...
This week... on The Grid....
Don Vennis fights Max Alexander-Movley for McClare's very future. Also, Jimmi Riakkenonenenen tries to find a new ice cream sandwich. You will be left on the edge of your seat of what legnths he will go to to get his surgar fix.
Friday on BBC 42.
Is crappy doodles a new breakfast cereal?
I wrote the idea down 3 years ago.
Achieved since? ...I havent lost it (I hope) :P
Friday on CBBC 42

STEPHANIE DE MONTE CARLO
Heh, heh, heh, we've managed to make everyone think that they are going to get a brand new future of Formula Bun but actually of course when we suddenly shift our position at the last moment it will be back as it was!
BERNALD ECCLEROCK
We have them all fooled. All we need to do is unleash the green lobby and Barry Batanoun will be toast!
you need our help. it's obvious.
Seems clear to me. I think we do the F1 one then the cold war one.
agreed.
I will write it one day. I like to procrastinate over it. :D
Hahahaha
Alex wrote a good post about not doing that.
I honestly dont think i am old enough to write it.
I think its at least 5 years away

How do you get a show on the BBC? This show is a gold I tell ya. Solid gold.

Hey boss you know what my favourite nursery rhyme is?
Boss Warne
What?
Rublah Chelloblahri
Blah blah black sheep, have you any wool...

We told you time and time again, it's 'Very bright yellow sheep' to keep in order with the Warne team livery. Besides, I gave the best wool to Josston.

We probably couldn't make it on TV, but we could make it a podcast drama. It could be our own high school sidepodmelodrama.

It's like F1 pig-latin. Brilliant. :)
We could do a half hour sketc show on sidepodradio
love it!
I can't think of a single reason not to.
agreed. write script, pick a voice and phone your bits in. we can comp it here.
Sign up to Who's starting line is it anyway!
Can we end show with D.C. crashing into something mundane like him shopping and cannot control his shopping kart, destroying the shopping karts around him and finally running head first into the check out stand.
This sounds like a good idea, i think its better than my current show.. if i narrate this instead is that ok?
sure thing :)
I'll cheat and pick Smedley :)

It's so very quiet, everywhere today .. and it'll get worse when the teams have their 2 week shutdown
Personally annoyed my parents scheduled my holidays to miss two races.
Though one of them is Valencia, so not much lost.
I skipped dinner and am having a rather fine toasted cinnamon and raisin bagel .. yumm
How long you away for?
Start giving a lot of money to a candidate during the election cycle. More than 80% of all ambassadorships go to people poeple who raised more than $120,000 or more for a candidate.
It was rather quiet so I blogged about teenage F1 drivers.

Two weeks from the 23rd August.
23rd August is Valencia and 30th August is Belgium. Hopefully there is tv show somewhere. Last time in Portugal I relied on German TV and in Italy on Rai.
Thank you :D

woop!
Sorry to be a downer about the show. Production value and entertainment wise, it is great. I actually meet and talked to a few people that were advisors to the show. However, because the nature of my job which I have to deal with a lot of politicans, the rose color glasses and the way they characterize some issues light me off a bit. It to the point where I openly aviod it. I've already lost enough hair.
I don't think that matters. Madlaline Albright was orginally from the Czech Republic
I can't find the subscribe button :(
Sorry, Madinaline albright was U.S. Secretary of State in Clinton's second term. The first female in that position.
The West Wing is frickin tremendous!
Hey all
howdy sir, how are you?

Good evening sir.
Heyo there
Ok, just in from work and worked out an interim way to hear podcasts in the car till I get hard wired into the car
iPhone, that is. Not me
squire.
headphones?
I am about a month behind on podcasts :(
Thank you .. I have subscribed
iPhone's speaker is almost bearable when sitting in the coffee cup holder :)
Ah, i like it. I guess i like american politics in gerneral.
It doesnt tackle the big issues, but i do like the way they try to deal with them using different issues. If that makes sense?
It is all a bit positive, but they were trying to portray a democrat on the liberal side of his party whilst a republican on the conservative side of his party was actually in office...I guess that gave them a bit of licence!
ah-ha.
Has taken a lot of experimentation to reach this solution thus far!
Tis true :D
I love the "Big Ball of Cheese Day" episodes
heheh yeah
Here is the article about basing the character on Obama
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/21/barackobama.uselections2008
Q? was Scott Speed the last driver to be ditched mid-season, before Bourdais?
JPM?
No, Wurz retired so Nakajima stepped in for Brazil 07
That was 2006. Speed was 2007.
Was he ditched, or did he jump?
ah ok, that was a loooong time ago
It is amazing how foretelling that show was. Especially in light that it went off the air two full years before the election. One of the few things I like is that the show has a President that can actually do math and knows simple economics. It is absolutely how incompetent my government is in spending, tax structure, and monetary policy.
He woke up one morning and couldnt turn right ;)
wurz jumped before he was ditched, right?
I thought he announced he was retiring then was ditched.
i LOVE martin sheen :D
You think your lot are bad, you should have a look at Ours! :P
I love this guy...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8104495.stm
and the lolipop incident :)
or a self-fulfilling prophecy? not that i've even seen the show of course.
I think it was mutual agreement, it was the last race and a long haul one (and Wurtz wanted to be with his family hence desire to retire) so I think Wurtz simply agreed to give Kaz a feel for F1 for the next season.
That true. However, at the rate we are spending, the rate we are deflating our currency, and the rate we are hemmoraging jobs... we'll be passing you rather fast.
Just think, PETA sent out a press release demanding the president appologizes for harming a fly.
Maybe he was planning his own team. Hmmmm..........
Keep going! I love the love US$ it's great for buying from Amazon.
yeah i saw, they sent him a fly swatter
I think it's time I toddled off to bed. Night all :)

Funny, this relates to the report I am trying to read. (It's extremely boring and 349 pages long... 148 to go.) When you buy things on the internet from Amazon, do you pay any VAT or any sort of transaction tax? The report looks at interstate commerce with internet goods and was curious on international sales what happens.
Night Jackie.
See you around - I will turn in as well - early lecture tomorrow.
Night Rich
Pay taxes? Don't be silly.
see ya rich.
Think I'll head off for an early night as well, see ya beyond the blue honda.
We pay VAT on amazon.co.uk purchases. You pay vatr on stuff from abroad on delivery if you get caught i belive...
Night Jackie
G'night
It's stranger than that:
http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/emarketing/article.php/2194821
Thanks
That is apart of what I am studying. A few years back the states got together and figured out something called the Streamlined Sales Tax initiative which figured out that problem with the different tax structures between states. That a drop in the pond compared to the EU-American-Asia problem with taxes collection on the internet. In the US, the states and the government agreed that the tax should be levied at the point of purchase, or where your mailing address is for your order. What the E.U. is basically setting up something similar but that steps over some very precarious international trade laws...
...and I've put 90% of sidepodcast to sleep.
Something the US government knows all about - arresting employees of gambling web sites for example.
No kidding.
does this site help?

Speaking of printer problems... ...does anyone know of anywhere that recycles third-party print cartridges? A charity sent Mum a cartridge recycle bag today and she was really annoyed that we only had one cartridge that was deemed acceptable according to that charity's website.

Same here. Great place to go for a Mac if you want the previous generation model with last year's software on it.
:D
I hope I’m not being rude when I ask this, but when was the last time us fans have really been happy? {Comment #373}
I was happiest between 1997 and 2002 (inclusive). In fact I can date exactly when that time of bliss ended to 15 January 2003. TV figures, from what I've seen, tend to suggest a lot of other people felt the same way.
One positive thing is that Bernie for a long time has wanted to have more races, but the teams have refused. Now that testing is gone we could be seeing 21-23 races in future seasons. {Comment #379}
That requires 21-23 places that are prepared to pay Bernie's fees. He's having enough trouble getting 18...
Happiest moment, in the last 10 years maybe : Brazil 2007 (tears of happiness included)

Why is writing documentation so necessary and so BORING?!
On the Kindle front I don’t see what else Amazon could have done about the situation except actually do a better job of PR. {Comment #661}
It could and should have told people what it was doing and why on or before doing it, not send a generic refund note without further explanation for two days. Simply because Amazon was entitled to the action it took does not mean people will telepathically know it has good cause. The e-books were bought in good faith and unless people are told that their faith was in error, they are always going to interpret having them taken away by the seller as illegal (because that's what it would normally be). It's not so much bad PR as bad customer service.
I dont think it will be dominant, but you have to remember that for a lot of places digital distribution just simply isnt an option.
Where i went to school for example will never get high speed broadband, as it is so far from a major town and due to the fact the population is spread out it is unlikely to get a high speed wireless. {Comment #662}
You'll be pleased to know that the government has guaranteed that everywhere in the UK will have 2MB/s broadband access by 2012. Unless, like me, you're sceptical about how closely the government will hold to its promise...
2mb is no where near enough.
Conservativly assuming the average home has 3 internet devices on at once, thats less than 700k each. Not enough to achieve anything, especially as HD becomes ever more prevailant
The problem here in Oz is not bandwidth but cost. For some reason, if it is wireless Internet, the price goes up to huge amounts. We can get 21MB 3G, but it's something like $80 a month for 2 or 3GB download.
Hi guys.
I want to apologise specifically to Mr and Mrs C but also to everyone else for what I said in this thread last night. It was out of order. I wasn't in a good place mentally and some sort of switch flicked, very out of character.
Please don't change anything or split off another site. If I or anyone doesn't like a discussion it is for us to leave it or talk about something else.
Hope we can put it behind us and move on.
Appreciate that Pat, no harm was done. We'll draw another one of those lines under it.

In the context of the part of the discussion I was replying to, 2MP/s is enough for receiving digital streaming (otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it) and downloading music (which I can't do, but that's because the iTunes site doesn't load on my computer, not because of bandwidth issues). Though I will concede it is not enough for movie distribution.
The average home doesn't have three internet devices, at least not where I live; the concept of having three computers is still deemed unusual, even if one of them is only used for the accounts and the odd bit of photocopying (and deliberately has no internet connection). Still, 2MP/s is a pathetically small target when places like Korea are going for 100 MP/s in every home by the same date. That said, getting a connection to everyone will be a vast improvement on the current situation, where even government information is tricky to access on a dial-up connection (which is the main alternative at the moment).
I'm not so sure about that - all you need is one PC, a video games console and an iPod/Laptop. I would suspect most homes would have at least two of those...

The only people I know with an internet-enabled laptop use a separate "3G mobile" connection, which would give the laptop theoretically 11MP/s speed independently of a house and most of the people I know don't have an internet-capable games console (as in, they might have a Playstation 2 lying unused in an attic corner but they never got round to having a Playstation 3-generation device). The habit of people to look at me like I've grown an extra head when I tell them I use the internet from my mobile suggests they don't use their phones for internetting either, even if most of them these days are technically capable of the feat. So in effect the tendency is towards one or two computers (desktop/laptop or one desktop, sometimes two) where I live.
I suppose it depends a lot on where you live in the country. Rural areas might be the places with the biggest deficiencies in high-speed internet access (whichever definition of "high-speed" you use), but there are parts of London which were struggling to get broadband last I heard (due to the waiting list for digging up the roads) and they probably would have the sort of set-up you describe.
It could well be the country I live in. In NZ I had one hard line connection and no wireless - very normal circumstances (my parents recently got wi-fi because my dad got an iPod Touch, but they only have one Mac).
Here in Denmark, almost everyone has wi-fi, even the trains have it... and the speeds are a lot faster than NZ so everyone is more connected. Having said that, my sister in law has a PC in the cupboard that they haven't even hooked up yet so maybe it is just me...
There is one wi-fi connection in my house... ...the one connecting my PDA to my computer. It theoretically could carry an internet connection, though why I'd want to bother when my desktop (which has an indirect wired internet connection) would need to be switched on first is a mystery.
Public wi-fi coverage is a bit hit-and-miss - in urban areas, it's quite common to find it in chain restaurants (though many charge for the priviledge). Out in the countryside, the only wi-fi connections are in private houses, and you can generally date when the household got a broadband connection (or last switched suppliers) from the connection type. As a rule, if they connected in the last 18 months, they'll almost certainly have wireless because that's the type of modem ISPs are tending to send out with new packages. If they've been with their ISP for more than about two-and-a-half years, they'll be wired. In between, the picture is a bit more mixed.
The laptop "3G mobile" thing is relatively recent, but I already know of at least two families who saw it as a solution to teenagers tending to hog bandwidth on the home connection. One of them has also had the foresight of making the teenager who owns the laptop pay for the connection...
Interesting... Because of the trains and my home connection I don't have one of these 3G thingys, I just use wi-fi.
