Monday is over already? What happened? Where did it go? If it wasn't such an unpopular day, I would ask for it back already. Oh, well, I guess I must turn my attention to Tuesday instead. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Toro Rosso made the most of their two days worth of press announcements by sacking Bourdais last week and announcing Not Seb this week. The rookie is also planning to continue his World Series by Renault racing, which is known as FR3.5. Can anyone explain that to me?
  • Whilst Ferrari have joined the ranks of those looking ahead to next year already, BMW have vowed to keep on pushing for 2009. Really? I'm all for sticking in the year you are in, but of all the teams to make the switch, I would have put money on BMW being at the top of the list. What can they possibly achieve from here?
  • Finally, I have revamped the Birthdays page on the wiki because the wonky calendar style was really irritating me. Hopefully I haven't missed anyone out, but if you're not on there, please add yourself so that when the time comes we can forget wish you a happy birthday.

That'll do it for now. It looks like the teams are starting to release their preview quotes for Hungary, so keep your eyes peeled for anything interesting. I'll see you in the comments.

World Series by Renault racing, which is known as FR3.5. Can anyone explain that to me?

WSbR is the name of the 'package'. It contains Formula Renault 3.5, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, and the Megane Trophy (and maybe a Clio Eurocup, can't remember) as well as various Renaults from motorsport history.

Finally, I have revamped the Birthdays page on the wiki because the wonky calendar style was really irritating me.

Nice job on the adjustments. I added yesterday's anniversary.

Especially in Sydney where we don't care about AFL!

I must say it was nice to watch a GP (from a wildly different timezone) live on a big screen. The only tiny Internet delivered footage necessary was during the stupid adverts. If only all free practice and qualifying came the same way...

  • Amy21/07/2009 at 07:11

I suspect they already have proposed dates to the FIA, and we'll know what they are once the first calendar draft is released.

    brochure says 25-28 March.

what's an Advantage member? what perks do you get?

  • F1Wolf21/07/2009 at 07:16

what's an Advantage member? what perks do you get?

you get a cap and access to a advantage bar :-)

  • Amy21/07/2009 at 07:17

what's an Advantage member? what perks do you get?

the first year I got a selection of photos from the event, this year I got an ugly hat and pin and next year we get acesss to 'free downloads of the best digital images of the event'

They also have bars that are just for Advantage members which next year will apparently have guest speakers. Next year apparently I get a free program as well instead of having to pay $20 for one. The best part though is the Behind The Scenes tour they do on the Wednesday. I missed out in 08 because I landed in the country too late, but its where you get to walk around the paddock + pit lane, and then they have interviews with some drivers and things. I heart my advantage membership :D

  • F1Wolf21/07/2009 at 07:17

I'll go regardless so no big deal to me if they change it

me too, but I need confirmed dates as that will determine the size of our expedition :-)

heh fair enough. I am all booked! Couldn't keep my same Fangio seat, but am now one section closer to the startline/podium. I am looking forward to my first time in the Jones stand, even if it is only on support race day :D

  • Amy21/07/2009 at 07:24

Fangio, which is pit straight. I know lots of people find not sitting on a corner boring but I love watching all the grid activity before the race starts so on race day I wouldn't want to be anywhere else :D

WSbR is the name of the 'package'. It contains Formula Renault 3.5, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, and the Megane Trophy (and maybe a Clio Eurocup, can't remember) as well as various Renaults from motorsport history.

Why is there a 3.5 though? They didn't want to go up to 4?

Don't forget Marc Gené (1998), Fernando Alonso (1999), Ricardo Zonta (2002) and Robert Kubica (2005). Sebastian Vettel would probably be a WSbR champion as well had he not been required for substitution duties in F1 for much of 2007.

Other F1 drivers who got a notable result in WSbR are Tiago Monteiro (2nd in 2004) and Markus Winklehock (3rd in 2005). World Series by Renault has been a pretty influential series over the years.

Hey Mr C, Cosworth think they'll be competitive.

Also, is it wrong that this bit:

"Cosworth has already begun recruiting extra track support and engine build staff for its F1 programme, having kept on much of the engineering brains that helped make its 2006 engine such a success."

Makes me think they have brains in jars?

ah, but we felt like we was right there.

    hmmm...

"There is not enough time for us to do a re-tune and extend the life of the engines. So we need to stay with the agreed number of eight engines."

so, someone is suggesting that engines might have to last even longer, and that eight per year is too many? have i missed another cost cutting brainwave somewhere?

  • me21/07/2009 at 09:43

too many Cosworth articles today all over the place so I am not sure where I read it, but some of them said something about FOTA idea for 5 engines per season per driver. not sure if that was a typo or what

The weather is expected to be mainly fine for tomorrow morning's partial solar eclipse. It will be the biggest such event since 1958. The moon will obscure 75 percent of the sun at the height of the eclipse, which will last two-and-a-half hours from 8.15am. Ophthalmologists have warned that people could lose their sight if they view the solar eclipse without proper protection

looks like we will have some sun eclipse here tomorrow

Sounds like me - I wants the change and then I gets bored with the new change and then I wants more change.

In the case of Todt to me its still no change.

More seriously while Ari has made some impressive moves in his candidacy he does need to clarify his position with respect to green issues. This does not necessarily mean to bring KERS back - it is only one issue in complex production line.

for me, no. there's nothing worth blogging about. i think the lack of testing may be killing my interest in f1.

usually about now we'd be watching times in spain and times in italy. posting pics of fiery cars and crashed piquets.

f1 this year is official disappointing. i just decided.

This year we have politics or pandas...!

I think it alright. Just that. Theres only been three good races, Australia, China and Germany. Compare that to last season where it was more or less the whole season. Not the greatest seasons in recent memory, but there is some sort of fight for the championship coming up (hopefully).

Its just in between races, my god its boring.

2002 was OK... 2004 was a dark time!

2009 is definitely better, but with the knowledge that had the FIA not effed with the rules so much we could have had a season like 2008 it's a dark stain in the season :(

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 12:32

i think teams have become lazy.

  • Jackie / saltire21/07/2009 at 12:36

Seriously, Max and co should be worried if the diehard fans are losing interest .. there's not much chance of the casual fan sticking around then

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:36

    But otherwise they won't learn.

FOTA and Ari are on the case already. They are fighting for us. Why abandon them now?

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 12:37

    Interesting. How come?

Different people up front. Change of the guard. It was needed. Plus the development battle between Brawn and RBR, with an ever-catching McLaren. It ain't over.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 12:37

Seriously, Max and co should be worried if the diehard fans are losing interest .. there's not much chance of the casual fan sticking around then

  • lou21/07/2009 at 12:38

But you and Lukeh are not exactly singing from the rooftops either, are you?

    how do you mean?

i'm loving Brawn being on top (obviously) but i'm also loving having a mix up in the order. it's brilliant to see Vettel and Webber doing great as well. Plus having Massa on the podium last race was lovely too. We've had some brilliant qualifying sessions, and some great races. Yes the usual f1 politics have stepped up a notch into unbearable but the racing and the teams have always been the attraction to the sport for me. Plus... Max may finally be replaced with someone much better...

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 12:38

FOTA and Ari are on the case already. They are fighting for us. Why abandon them now?

FOTA are not fighting for us. They are fighting for themselves.

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:38

i think teams have become lazy.

i would disagree with that. i think they really do see a need to cut costs, and dropping testing is one way of doing that. i think the teams realized they need their windtunnel and CFD more than they need the track time...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/07/2009 at 12:38

    Interesting. How come?

Different people up front. Change of the guard. It was needed. Plus the development battle between Brawn and RBR, with an ever-catching McLaren. It ain't over.

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:39

But we have returned to the mid-90's where the guy in front wins and nobody can overtake :(

  • me21/07/2009 at 12:39

    not in the slightest.

I'll be honest, I know of quite a few people on other places I go on want the ban on refuelling.

I'll be honest, I know of quite a few people on other places I go on want the ban on refuelling.

  • me21/07/2009 at 12:41

I'll be honest, I know of quite a few people on other places I go on want the ban on refuelling.

my point is, they haven't listened to the fans, they haven't asked.

they only ask fans the questions it suits them to ask.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 12:42

But we have returned to the mid-90's where the guy in front wins and nobody can overtake

Only because Brawn is faster in some conditions, RBR is faster in opposing conditions. The rest of the field is overtaking just fine.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/07/2009 at 12:42

The fans who went to see F1 tests are not allowed inside the CFD rooms are they?

i haven't been invited, anyone else?

Well I don't have the top secret clearance, so not me either. I doubt even 90% of the staff in a team are allowed either :(

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:42

How are they listening to us?

    two things:

    1. they mentioned that they would indeed use the fan surveys that the FIA ran. yes, saying it is different from doing it, but i think they will indeed use it. blind faith on my end? maybe.

    2. FOTA mentioned a number of things that they'd prioritize as part of a breakaway - most notably, bringing down ticket prices. the breakaway is no more (at least, it seems to be the case), but i think they see the reason why there is a need to bring prices down. when flavio was saying they don't want to race in front of half-empty stands, surely he was sincere in saying that?

  • me21/07/2009 at 12:42

Well I don't have the top secret clearance, so not me either. I doubt even 90% of the staff in a team are allowed either :(

but they let us in the garages during testing.

But that is people voting with their feet. Which is what we're saying we will do. It's not listening, it's reacting.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 12:43

ah, but i was only there because Renault publicised an event in paris that didnt happen, i went off to paris, nothing there. They did it because i complained on their forum.

  • lou21/07/2009 at 12:45

Because you haven't said much like you have above lately? Dunno. Are you happy? I thought you'd be exctatic?

i've loved every second of this season so far, and can honestly say there isn't a race this year, that i can remember, that i've found boring so far. it's probably because of Brawn and stuff, but i'd easily watch each race again and still like it.

  • me21/07/2009 at 12:45

ah, but i was only there because Renault publicised an event in paris that didnt happen, i went off to paris, nothing there. They did it because i complained on their forum.

ok. but they didn't invite into the wind tunnel, did they?

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:46

Hmm, 92-95 wasn't too hot for action was it?

92 was so-so, true. 93 had some good racing, most notably Donington. 94 was dark, for obvious reasons. 95 was OK - they had great racing at Silverstone, Spa, and the Nurburgring.

it could be better, true, but i don't think it's as bad as you think it is...

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 12:46

I thought we were talking about FOTA?

if i recall, FOTA said they'd use the FIA survey because the FIA themselves never really did use it.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 12:46

Well I don't have the top secret clearance, so not me either. I doubt even 90% of the staff in a team are allowed either :(

but they let us in the garages during testing.

That's exactly my point. Le BOL facebooked some testing videos from March ... That's almost half a year ago!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/07/2009 at 13:06

Good for you. Maybe it's because I don't know how you felt about last year then..?

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 13:07

Actually, here's a perfect example. Teams are worried about the way the calendar is shaping up and wanna talk to Bernie. Mario says: "It is always a matter of finding what the right balance is between what we can earn, what Bernie can earn, and what is important for the market."

Where are the fans on his list of importance!?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/07/2009 at 13:07

Exactly ... Mario should have said "We are concerned that none of our loyal and crazy fans in Germany, France or the UK may see a race in 2010 at the expense of 10 chinese children and a couple of mad Aussies..."

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 13:11

No, the TV money and the car companies and sponsors are. The fans are just a nuisance to these people!

  • lou21/07/2009 at 13:12

Good for you. Maybe it's because I don't know how you felt about last year then..?

maybe... the last couple of years have been tough being a honda/JB fan, after the winter i would have just been happy to see the team race, let alone win...

  • RG21/07/2009 at 13:13

No, the TV money and the car companies and sponsors are. The fans are just a nuisance to these people!

When the ratings come down, they'll be begging us to come back.

No, the TV money and the car companies and sponsors are. The fans are just a nuisance to these people!

TV money will disapeer if we aere forced to watch cars race in valencia every week.

Sponsors wont be interested in a sport which mainly takes place in asian swamplands and graveyards in turkey.

The fans will get what some of what they want, because thats what makes the teams money. Bernie will get some of what he wants because thats what makes him money

  • RG21/07/2009 at 13:15

we will always moan though.. it will never be perfect, it's just at the moment it's almost as far away from perfect as it can be..

  • Journeyer21/07/2009 at 13:19

But we aren't getting what we want are we? We keep moaning because something is missing, taken away or we are not listened to...

I hope I'm not being rude when I ask this, but when was the last time us fans have really been happy?

What would be interesting to find out is if between then and now, have the TV ratings suffered as well?

Thats because the teams haven't had a say.. its been done by Bernie's dictat. With the teams struggling to get anything they want. Now they appear to be negotiating with each other

One positive thing is that Bernie for a long time has wanted to have more races, but the teams have refused. Now that testing is gone we could be seeing 21-23 races in future seasons.

Yes but that was a small part of the year.

We do a weekly show, there needs to be something to talk about. If it was entirely perfect, we would be back doing ten minute podcasts again.

At least back then I didn't feel like the sport was fundamentally going a way I didn't like.

they are listening to a few things surely.. okay well FOTA are aware of a few things anyway aren't they? i mean look at the list of things their break away would have when that was announced. most of the things on their list were things that the fans wanted right? like cheaper entrance fees and stuff. surely that proves they know we are here...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/07/2009 at 13:23

    5 in north america

As things stand at the moment with fees and stuff you'd have problems with most of the places.

If you are thinking of old F1 tracks then you need to also consider upgrades required..

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 13:35

As things stand at the moment with fees and stuff you'd have problems with most of the places.

Fees could be much less with twice the number of races though...

But we are talking about Bernie, whose logic is double the circuits = double the money!!!

  • Amy21/07/2009 at 13:38

just put a new transcript on the drop.io, it's hanging out with Mr Hargreaves James (Esq)

  • Rich21/07/2009 at 13:39

You could have 12 good races and it would be better...

If you have more races it will compensate for dude races/circuits like Valencia - I think 18 is fine, could be increased to 22 as the maximum. Not really feasible to have more.

Have enjoyed this season a lot - guess I think it is good that different teams are dominating. Surprised that I even like knowing the fuel weights before the race. Qualifying is really good but I hate how they are making tyres more of an issue than they should be with the two sets. Just take suitable tyres for the track, if need be ration them, but let the teams choose which tyre to use in qualifying and racing.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 13:39

In theory he would get more from tv rights and circuit sponsorship. It would put a lot less pressure on circuit owners. More races would also likely result in cheaper tickets.

Who is Brawn's reserve driver this weekend then?

\or will they fly Ant over if he is needed?

    Coulthard? Baby Hair?

  • lou21/07/2009 at 15:20

Who is Brawn's reserve driver this weekend then?

\or will they fly Ant over if he is needed?

good question. not sure they have any other drivers, probably just hoping they wont need a reserve driver.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 15:20

    Coulthard? Baby Hair?

But they are redbull drivers, surely they would just try to delibratly crash into the other brawn!

Not having a reserve driver is the team showing how to lose the race... any talk of this subject is just bla bla bla...

Er Ross... you know how you said I should take a holiday, well, I'm off to Belgium this weekend...

    Something like that?

  • Rich21/07/2009 at 15:28

If Red Bull score as well this weekend as they have in the past two races and Brawn do no better than they have for these same races - Red Bull will be leading the Constructor's championship. In the last two races Red Bull have scored 36 points to 16 points for Brawn and currently there is 19.5 points between them.

  • lou21/07/2009 at 15:29

do you think he's told them?

well... the BBC know...and you'd think someone on the team may check news sites of something... i'm sure someone told them :P i wonder if we will see Wurz in the paddock this weekend?

  • Rich21/07/2009 at 15:32

Yeah. In fairness I'm usually catching up on comments at this time so I don't usually pop up 'live' for another hour.. and I caught up at lunch.

Time for a short podcast before the TdF highlights come on.

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 17:14

    Quiet eh?

I have just discovered that all ten series of Friends are available on iTunes. Am wondering if I can ask for Sidepoddonations for this as well as the whole radio/charity thing. :)

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:21

Buy the DVD box set, get a DVD to MP4 convertor, put on itunes...put on ipod.

    Sorted

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 17:22

Buy the DVD box set, get a DVD to MP4 convertor, put on itunes...put on ipod.

By the time I have done all that for ALL ten series... it will probably cost more than buying direct from iTunes. Especially if I assign a value to my time.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 17:24

Buy the DVD box set, get a DVD to MP4 convertor, put on itunes...put on ipod.

I did that and it took my years to pay it off. You don't wanna do that.

No not that one, the little telly one.

oh i see. that is quite cute.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:38

but only if the adults have the money in the first place, otherwise that would be irrisponsible wouldnt it.

Although I'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who doesn't own a portable media player other than a silly little 128mb mp3 thing.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 17:39

    Harumph.

hehe, If you watch enough E4 you wont have to worry about paying!

Infact if you buy a tv usb dongle you can probably set it up to automaticly record them all as they go round (2 per day) in Mp4 format.

So thats 15 pounds insead of 400 ;)

  • me21/07/2009 at 17:39

    Hahahaha. I don't think that's a selling point right about now :)

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:43

it also means you will end up in Bernies office for being highly illegal, which is bad.

it also means you will end up in Bernies office for being highly illegal, which is bad.

Recording it off the telly on to your own DVR is fine.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:46

Recording it off the telly on to your own DVR is fine.

Only if you keep it for a short-ish time, if you kept it indefinitely that would be bad

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 17:48

Only if you keep it for a short-ish time, if you kept it indefinitely that would be bad

I know loads of people who keep stuff they have recorded, i dont think you can start policing that, distributing it would be illegal, but keeping highlights programmes for personal reference cant be?

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 17:49

That quiz prize i won is from an Australian forum... ooops

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:50

I know loads of people who keep stuff they have recorded, i dont think you can start policing that, distributing it would be illegal, but keeping highlights programmes for personal reference cant be?

But most programs aren't highlights, i know it cant be policed, but its like recording songs of the radio too.

All of Friends - on iTunes.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 17:55

All of Friends - on iTunes.

    ah yes

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 17:55

All of Friends - on iTunes.

    £20 x 10.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 17:57

    £20 x 10.

Ah... Well that's quite a bit innit?

I might buy a few at a time perhaps :)

After all it is pay day tomorrow - which also means it's Sidepodradio donation day! :)

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 17:57

This is really bizzare... Apple people confuse me!

£20 is a lot for 1 season of an old tv show... Dont they offer it cheaper if you buy them all at once?

Do these things get cheaper over time on itunes?

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 17:58

I have come up with a potential solution for the times when I'm playing music on Sidepodradio but we don't have vision. I have recorded some video which could play without sound while the songs are on.

I have done a bit of searching and I can't find any way of exporting the visulizer to video I can upload. But this could work.

I'm not sure all of my shows will be music shows. I have some other ideas... I just need to work out if they are possible before I confirm anything.

  • me21/07/2009 at 17:58

This is really bizzare... Apple people confuse me!

    convenience sir.

one click and you own it. no going outside, no packaging to store forever, and it works in your house and on the road.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 17:59

I have come up with a potential solution for the times when I'm playing music on Sidepodradio but we don't have vision. I have recorded some video which could play without sound while the songs are on.

Is it you dancing with the big red clock? :D

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 18:01

Do these things get cheaper over time on itunes?

Not always, but sometimes they do.

However, each episode is almost £2 so if you buy the whole series, you are saving over £20.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:01

    convenience sir.

one click and you own it. no going outside, no packaging to store forever, and it works in your house and on the road.

You can buy all the DVDs for £76.47 from amazon instead.

My ideal place to watch a quick episode of friends is on my iPhone while commuting. I certainly don't need Hi-Def for that. And to convert 30 DVDs onto the computer and then break out all the episodes, and then tag them all correctly into series and then have them on my iPhone... Well... Maybe I'm lazy but I'd rather be doing something creative with my time.

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:02

You can buy all the DVDs for £76.47 from amazon instead.

    that counts as packaging?

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:02

one click and you own it. no going outside, no packaging to store forever, and it works in your house and on the road.

    hmmm.. i guess.

DVD's are much cheaper though, i got 112 hours of west wing for £40!

But i think i can do the same with my PS3/PSP using standard DVD's and blu ray...

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:03

    that counts as packaging?

Yes sorry I phrased that really badly. I was agreeing with you...

Even if I bought them on DVD I'd have to rip and store them because I only really want to watch them on my iPhone.

  • Jackie / saltire21/07/2009 at 18:04

Oii! Mr C it's the magic "read more" button LOL

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:04

Even if I bought them on DVD I'd have to rip and store them because I only really want to watch them on my iPhone.

And not having to do that and not having to have them clogging up the shelves would be worth more than the difference in price.

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:04

    hmmm.. i guess.

also, and i hate to say it, but...

your friends/family cannot "borrow" your itunes downloads and then forget to return them, break them, or just plain steal them.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:05

Blast! I so meant to borrow the spare Blackberry at work today to test F1 Minute.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:06

I guess i am old fashioned. I am actualy happy to pay a bit more for a game from a shop than download it from Steam or PlaystationStore

In the interests of balance, because this is always a massively one-sided conversation. What other services are available, other than iTunes?

in the US you have hulu. in the uk... umm...

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:11

I guess i am old fashioned. I am actualy happy to pay a bit more for a game from a shop than download it from Steam or PlaystationStore

Digital download definatly looks to be the way its going though.

The games companies are trying to fight it though with packs like this!

    Good evening Mr Roy!

Why does anyone need to download Friends when there are constant re-runs on TV? It is on practically every day.

Yes, I'm all for competition - as long as that doesn't split the available content between platforms.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:13

I want to watch it on my phone.

    4OD?

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:14

Yes, I'm all for competition - as long as that doesn't split the available content between platforms.

amazon must be planning something similar, to match their mp3 service, but i've not heard about it yet.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 18:14

    4OD?

Its not on there i dont think

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:14

    That just sounds bizarre.

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 18:14

    Jackie,

Did Lou speak to you about the quiz? She was considering it last night after a little persuasion. I told her she should talk it over with you.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:15

amazon must be planning something similar, to match their mp3 service, but i've not heard about it yet.

I think there is a service coming to the PS3.

I belive there is a system on the Xbox, but its just for rentals

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 18:15

What about for people who don't have hundreds of pounds to spend on a gaming system?

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:16

What about for people who don't have hundreds of pounds to spend on a gaming system?

    itunes is free

  • Jackie / saltire21/07/2009 at 18:16

Did Lou speak to you about the quiz? She was considering it last night after a little persuasion. I told her she should talk it over with you.

Nope, not heard from her. I will mail her tomorrow as I see she's gone out to the real world tonight... is that allowed?

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:16

Yes, I'm all for competition - as long as that doesn't split the available content between platforms.

It's difficult, there does still seem to be a lot of innovation from Apple at the moment. But still there are big problems (The Apple TV menu layout for a start off). However think of it like the dominance of IE6. IE6s dominance for such a long time actually was, in many ways, a good thing for the internet because suddenly everyone knew what was expected. Now of course we need to make it die.

Apple are in the phase of defining the standard. Once that happens somebody will make a more open version which does everything that Apple's does and we'll have competition.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:16

What about for people who don't have hundreds of pounds to spend on a gaming system?

They aren't just gaming systems any more.

    Home multimedia centres :D

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:17

    itunes is free

I thought you said it cost £200?

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:17

    That just sounds bizarre.

Does it? The screen is easily big enough for something like Friends. There is no way I'd watch a movie like that though.

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:17

    itunes is free

I thought you said it cost £200?

the application is free to download. unlike buying a ps3. the content isn't free.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:17

    itunes is free

and that doesn't answer my request for competitors to a monopoly, which is ironic given the way Apple fans have acted over the last 15 years

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 18:18

Nope, not heard from her. I will mail her tomorrow as I see she's gone out to the real world tonight... is that allowed?

I think we discussed this last night with the iphone.

I dont think itunes is a problem as long as it is open. If they limited which ISP's can access itunes it will be.

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 18:19

and that doesn't answer my request for competitors to a monopoly, which is ironic given the way Apple fans have acted over the last 15 years

It's not really a monopoly though, because other people could do it. They just don't.

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:20

It's not really a monopoly though, because other people could do it. They just don't.

they do, just not in this country.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:21

It's not really a monopoly though, because other people could do it. They just don't.

The problem with monopoly's is that they make it virtually impossible for anyone to do anything which threatens the monopoly.

Look at what happened to netscape

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:21

    That just sounds bizarre.

Does it? The screen is easily big enough for something like Friends. There is no way I'd watch a movie like that though.

Yes. It is is a phone. You don't watch TV shows on a phone.

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 18:22

The problem with monopoly's is that they make it virtually impossible for anyone to do anything which threatens the monopoly.

I don't believe it is impossible for someone to start digital TV downloads. Like Mr C said, Amazon must be right there.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:22

It's not really a monopoly though, because other people could do it. They just don't.

A monopoly is an industry in which barriers to entry are high. And I had asked you 5 years ago what Apple's movie sales business was going to look like you'd have looked at me like I was mad. Those aren't high barriers to entry. People just need to compete.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 18:22

Yes. It is is a phone. You don't watch TV shows on a phone.

I had a mobile tv with a screen smaller than the iphones though! :D

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:22

Yes. It is is a phone. You don't watch TV shows on a phone.

you can't really be sure that until you've tried it though can you?

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:23

I don't believe it is impossible for someone to start digital TV downloads. Like Mr C said, Amazon must be right there.

the problem you have are the movie studios. they're frightened, greedy and stupid.

Perhaps, but look at apples poition. If they said tomorrow the only way you can sell though itunes is to sign an exclucivity agreement, the content owners would do it becuase there arent any other options.... and suddenly competition is 200 times harder.

I am about to invalidate my argument, for PC's and TV's at least as sky and BT both operate on demand digital download stores!

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:25

so alex... have you bought it yet?

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:25

that isn't true. not for the movie industry.

apple have the music industry over a barrel, even with amazon. but not hollywood.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 18:26

New version of iTunes and Safari are downloading for some reason and while they are doing that iTunes in unavailable.

  • Christine21/07/2009 at 18:27

And whoever it was, NBC maybe, that pulled out of the iTunes store and only agreed to return when variable pricing was agreed on.

because we're willing to pay that price i guess.

the value must be what they think they can charge, because as i said the other day, one show costs about five cents to deliver. even if you factor in server costs and support costs, it's still only comes to a matter of pence per video.

but we're still buying them. or at least trying.

Mr C, one feature I really want implimented is more terms to filter out, cos I'm really bored of any Apple conversations.

Welcome to my world circa 2002.

    I need to clarify this...

I don't have any problem at all with Apple, they've come up with some awesome stuff and if I were offered a great deal I'd probably take it.

I just don't see why I should be locked in to one provider, particularly when you hear tales of HDDs being scanned and the scan physically removing the files from the computer.

The 2002 comment is about the reverse argument which has been going on for as long as I can remember, why Apple people didn't want to be locked into using MS. I had arguments about it before I ever even came online. The pro/anti Apple thing has been going on for me for 14 years and I grew tired of it a long, long time ago.

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:52

I just don't see why I should be locked in to one provider, particularly when you hear tales of HDDs being scanned and the scan physically removing the files from the computer.

amazon did exactly that with kindle this week.

    with great power...

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:55

  • me21/07/2009 at 18:58

i wish i did 'other' stuff!

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 18:58

Fair enough. Didn't hear about that because I've never heard of Kindle.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 18:59

Fair enough. Didn't hear about that because I've never heard of Kindle.

    Can't beat a good'ol book i find.

  • me21/07/2009 at 19:03

Fair enough. Didn't hear about that because I've never heard of Kindle.

not sure it's available in this country (you spot a pattern?).

my point wasn't that amazon are evil too, it's just that the whole of the media industry is being redefined right now. from music, to movies, to books, to games and everything in between.

to me, it's not fair to say "i'm not happy with this monopoly", when the rules are being rewritten every single day. we live in very interesting times (for me at least), and i'm gonna enjoy the ride.

sometimes i'll win and sometimes i'll lose, blueray may yet become the dominant platform and i'll look quite silly. maybe apple will screw it all up and you can say "i told you so".

right now i want to watch movies on a tiny little hand-held device, and i can. to me that's what it's all about.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 19:06

On the Kindle front I don't see what else Amazon could have done about the situation except actually do a better job of PR.

Receiving stolen property is illegal. And there are no two ways about it. And if Amazon annoy book producers, if they start to think Amazon don't protect their copyright then they wont support Kindle.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 19:07

sometimes i'll win and sometimes i'll lose, blueray may yet become the dominant platform and i'll look quite silly. maybe apple will screw it all up and you can say "i told you so".

I dont think it will be dominant, but you have to remember that for a lot of places digital distribution just simply isnt an option.

Where i went to school for example will never get high speed broadband, as it is so far from a major town and due to the fact the population is spread out it is unlikely to get a high speed wireless.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 19:08

this girl i know wrote a blog post, about the other stuff she does.

    Cool stuff.

  • me21/07/2009 at 19:08

agreed, and apple would likely have to do the same, as would anyone else.

the problem is, people aren't used to that happening to them, so we're all having to learn as we go. in a couple of years it'll be second nature.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 19:08

to me, it's not fair to say "i'm not happy with this monopoly", when the rules are being rewritten every single day. we live in very interesting times (for me at least), and i'm gonna enjoy the ride.

but you can at least see why the endless mentions of itunes gets annoying? cos that was my other point

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 19:09

Receiving stolen property is illegal. And there are no two ways about it. And if Amazon annoy book producers, if they start to think Amazon don't protect their copyright then they wont support Kindle.

Couldnt they have recovered the funds they passed on to the illegal publisher and pass them on to the rightfull owners?

I dont think seizing it back off the customer was really all that sensible for a platform which wants to be taken seriously

Hey all. It's been a while.

It looks like Brawn started a new fashion trend in sports.

Also, Sidepodale update: The intial batch wasn't to my standards so am going to make Mr. C's Irish Red, otherwise known as Sidepodale once again. I need to take photos and put on drop.io this time. I am also making a batch of oatmeal cream stout. It is going to be a strong one with an estimated 9.5% alcohol content according to my hydrometer.

  • me21/07/2009 at 19:10

but you can at least see why the endless mentions of itunes gets annoying? cos that was my other point

i'm looking for things to talk about, because f1 isn't very interesting right now.

new media is interesting to me, maybe we should set up a separate site for such discussions? christine?

    Definitely worth thinking about.

Certainly podcasting for me is more about the journey than the subject matter at the moment.

the problem is, people aren't used to that happening to them, so we're all having to learn as we go. in a couple of years it'll be second nature.

Everything things they are buying something, because that's essentially what they are told - but this example proves that we aren't buying, we are renting. People need to get into thinking of it as online Blockbuster. That may or may not interest me in future, depends whether it is a film, song, or book I suppose.

I think legally they would have to take the books from customers as they didn't have th rights to them. What they should have doe is contacted the customers and tell them that the books would be removed in a few days rather than taking them and not mentioning it.

new media is interesting to me,

..which is all fine. New media discussions are interesting... until the stock response to any minor query is "get a Mac". This may or may not be the best platform at any given point, currently clearly it is.. but those of us - and I freely admit this may only be me - who choose something else and are by and large happy with it do get a bit tired of being hit with that stick, it adds nothing. I'm trying not to insult anyone here, this isn't personal and I'm not trying to single anyone out because lots of people do it.

  • Steven Roy21/07/2009 at 19:24

    Interesting.

Also bear in mind that we have sidepodspace, sidepodale and sidepodtime. What is the point to sidepod in any of those?

Agreed. And also I often get accused of being a Mac Fanboy when in fact I am just a fanboy :) I would like to say that none of the comments I have added tonight have been from a mac. They have been from my Dell and that video earlier was recorded on a Logitech webcam.

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 19:26

I wonder if there is an argument for following the stackoverflow.com model. They wanted people to stop talking about stackoverflow on stackoverflow. So they created meta.stackoverflow.com

i disagree. well, assuming we're talking about the same comment?

nick had various issues with his video production, all of which could be solved using a mac. all of which we could have helped him solve if he owned one.

therefore it was good advice and i stand by it as i did last night. you may not like my advice, but nick asked me, and that was my response.

which is fine if he had one, but buying a new £750 computer isnt a viable option, especially as he isnt likely to do that kind of thing lots, it was a one off i believe

  • Alex Andronov21/07/2009 at 19:29

i disagree. well, assuming we're talking about the same comment?

Sorry... I was only talking about the "any minor query is 'get a mac'" part. Which I think is common on the internet.

But the advantage with Sidepodcast's discussion group is that they often know the answer to things. You have in depth knowledge and were trying to help in depth and your answer was 'get a mac'. That's different than a stock answer and therefore in my opinion totally valid.

  • me21/07/2009 at 19:29

which is fine if he had one, but buying a new £750 computer isnt a viable option, especially as he isnt likely to do that kind of thing lots, it was a one off i believe

I distinctly recall Mr C saying if you are going to be doing A LOT of video, then the mac is the way to go.

  • Pat W21/07/2009 at 19:35

nick had various issues with his video production, all of which could be solved using a mac. all of which we could have helped him solve if he owned one.

Nothing wrong with that, it's almost certainly right. Macs are known for their media-producing capabilities. But we were talking about downloading and consuming new media, not producing it.

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 19:35

I distinctly recall Mr C saying if you are going to be doing A LOT of video, then the mac is the way to go.

then thats fair enough, i wasnt part of that bit of the conversation, but he didnt want to do lots of video, so it was probably more aimed at the windows users (or which ever OS he uses). i think Macs are good, and quite clearly they are alot better than most Windows computers, and if i had that kind of money i'd get one.

After that go home and clean up my mess from yesterday's beer brewing. Might catch up on my blog, do a little sidepodcasting while playing Fight Night on PS3. Somewhere, I need to fit in a quick run.

I can't remember who originally said it but it's pretty clear that pandas are just teenage Goths. Lots of face paint and eyeshadow, hide in their rooms all the time, don't go out with anyone, and don't eat properly.

Bring it on home to me.

    Don't bring me down

  • Dan Brunell21/07/2009 at 20:32

It's funny when you take these songs with me in the title and view 'me' in the third person instead of the first.

Songs like Big Star's 'When My Baby's is Beside Me' and Benny Goodman's 'When My Baby Smiles at Me' have a whole new meaning.

    That would be it yes

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 20:54

Is that the same unrealistic show about self rightious White House staffers or is it something else.

Its very realistic. I read somewhere that Obama was a massive fan, apparently he modeled parts of his white house set up after Bartlets

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 20:55

I am a bit ahead of you...

Mwha actually no you're not, i've already see it once fully, and 4-5-6-7 twice. I just love these few episodes.

Its very realistic. I read somewhere that Obama was a massive fan, apparently he modeled parts of his white house set up after Bartlets

The season 6 (or is it 7) debate is so realistic to Obama, policys and everything. You'd think it was filmed recently

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2009 at 20:56

But i will sit here smugly knowing i am enjoying it more :P

    aha, tis likely :D

Mwha actually no you're not, i've already see it once fully, and 4-5-6-7 twice. I just love these few episodes.

Why 4-5-6-7 twice? Something against Sorkin?

I may have seen the entire first series close to 10 times. The second series a lot, and so on down to the most recent season that I've only seen twice. But then I was rewatching as I was waiting for the next series to come out.

  • Nick21/07/2009 at 20:57

The season 6 (or is it 7) debate is so realistic to Obama, policys and everything. You'd think it was filmed recently

Apparently they modelled that character (i havent got to him yet) after obama, following his speech at the 04 democratic convention

I have never seen any of it ever

The guy who wrote it worked very closely with Obama in his run for Senate.

Why 4-5-6-7 twice? Something against Sorkin?

Nah, but we were watching it as a family, and my family watch it slow, so i watched 4-7 on my own, then watched it again when my family reached them.

The writing from Aaron Sorkin is amazing. The dialogue goes so fast you can't believe it.

And Mr C if you need to get Christine interested it's also David Tennant's favorite show :)

We probably couldn't make it on TV, but we could make it a podcast drama. It could be our own high school sidepodmelodrama.

Can we end show with D.C. crashing into something mundane like him shopping and cannot control his shopping kart, destroying the shopping karts around him and finally running head first into the check out stand.

    STEPHANIE DE MOTE CARLO

BIMI why you so hungry for sweeties? Why you not hungry for Formula Bun no more?

Start giving a lot of money to a candidate during the election cycle. More than 80% of all ambassadorships go to people poeple who raised more than $120,000 or more for a candidate.

Sorry to be a downer about the show. Production value and entertainment wise, it is great. I actually meet and talked to a few people that were advisors to the show. However, because the nature of my job which I have to deal with a lot of politicans, the rose color glasses and the way they characterize some issues light me off a bit. It to the point where I openly aviod it. I've already lost enough hair.

Ah, i like it. I guess i like american politics in gerneral.

It doesnt tackle the big issues, but i do like the way they try to deal with them using different issues. If that makes sense?

It is all a bit positive, but they were trying to portray a democrat on the liberal side of his party whilst a republican on the conservative side of his party was actually in office...I guess that gave them a bit of licence!

It is amazing how foretelling that show was. Especially in light that it went off the air two full years before the election. One of the few things I like is that the show has a President that can actually do math and knows simple economics. It is absolutely how incompetent my government is in spending, tax structure, and monetary policy.

When you buy things on the internet from Amazon, do you pay any VAT or any sort of transaction tax? The report looks at interstate commerce with internet goods and was curious on international sales what happens.

    Thanks

That is apart of what I am studying. A few years back the states got together and figured out something called the Streamlined Sales Tax initiative which figured out that problem with the different tax structures between states. That a drop in the pond compared to the EU-American-Asia problem with taxes collection on the internet. In the US, the states and the government agreed that the tax should be levied at the point of purchase, or where your mailing address is for your order. What the E.U. is basically setting up something similar but that steps over some very precarious international trade laws...

    On the Kindle front I don’t see what else Amazon could have done about the situation except actually do a better job of PR. {Comment #661}

It could and should have told people what it was doing and why on or before doing it, not send a generic refund note without further explanation for two days. Simply because Amazon was entitled to the action it took does not mean people will telepathically know it has good cause. The e-books were bought in good faith and unless people are told that their faith was in error, they are always going to interpret having them taken away by the seller as illegal (because that's what it would normally be). It's not so much bad PR as bad customer service.

I dont think it will be dominant, but you have to remember that for a lot of places digital distribution just simply isnt an option.

    Where i went to school for example will never get high speed broadband, as it is so far from a major town and due to the fact the population is spread out it is unlikely to get a high speed wireless. {Comment #662}

You'll be pleased to know that the government has guaranteed that everywhere in the UK will have 2MB/s broadband access by 2012. Unless, like me, you're sceptical about how closely the government will hold to its promise...

2mb is no where near enough.

Conservativly assuming the average home has 3 internet devices on at once, thats less than 700k each. Not enough to achieve anything, especially as HD becomes ever more prevailant

The problem here in Oz is not bandwidth but cost. For some reason, if it is wireless Internet, the price goes up to huge amounts. We can get 21MB 3G, but it's something like $80 a month for 2 or 3GB download.

    Hi guys.

I want to apologise specifically to Mr and Mrs C but also to everyone else for what I said in this thread last night. It was out of order. I wasn't in a good place mentally and some sort of switch flicked, very out of character.

Please don't change anything or split off another site. If I or anyone doesn't like a discussion it is for us to leave it or talk about something else.

Hope we can put it behind us and move on.

Appreciate that Pat, no harm was done. We'll draw another one of those lines under it.

In the context of the part of the discussion I was replying to, 2MP/s is enough for receiving digital streaming (otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it) and downloading music (which I can't do, but that's because the iTunes site doesn't load on my computer, not because of bandwidth issues). Though I will concede it is not enough for movie distribution.

The average home doesn't have three internet devices, at least not where I live; the concept of having three computers is still deemed unusual, even if one of them is only used for the accounts and the odd bit of photocopying (and deliberately has no internet connection). Still, 2MP/s is a pathetically small target when places like Korea are going for 100 MP/s in every home by the same date. That said, getting a connection to everyone will be a vast improvement on the current situation, where even government information is tricky to access on a dial-up connection (which is the main alternative at the moment).

The only people I know with an internet-enabled laptop use a separate "3G mobile" connection, which would give the laptop theoretically 11MP/s speed independently of a house and most of the people I know don't have an internet-capable games console (as in, they might have a Playstation 2 lying unused in an attic corner but they never got round to having a Playstation 3-generation device). The habit of people to look at me like I've grown an extra head when I tell them I use the internet from my mobile suggests they don't use their phones for internetting either, even if most of them these days are technically capable of the feat. So in effect the tendency is towards one or two computers (desktop/laptop or one desktop, sometimes two) where I live.

I suppose it depends a lot on where you live in the country. Rural areas might be the places with the biggest deficiencies in high-speed internet access (whichever definition of "high-speed" you use), but there are parts of London which were struggling to get broadband last I heard (due to the waiting list for digging up the roads) and they probably would have the sort of set-up you describe.

It could well be the country I live in. In NZ I had one hard line connection and no wireless - very normal circumstances (my parents recently got wi-fi because my dad got an iPod Touch, but they only have one Mac).

Here in Denmark, almost everyone has wi-fi, even the trains have it... and the speeds are a lot faster than NZ so everyone is more connected. Having said that, my sister in law has a PC in the cupboard that they haven't even hooked up yet so maybe it is just me...

There is one wi-fi connection in my house... ...the one connecting my PDA to my computer. It theoretically could carry an internet connection, though why I'd want to bother when my desktop (which has an indirect wired internet connection) would need to be switched on first is a mystery.

Public wi-fi coverage is a bit hit-and-miss - in urban areas, it's quite common to find it in chain restaurants (though many charge for the priviledge). Out in the countryside, the only wi-fi connections are in private houses, and you can generally date when the household got a broadband connection (or last switched suppliers) from the connection type. As a rule, if they connected in the last 18 months, they'll almost certainly have wireless because that's the type of modem ISPs are tending to send out with new packages. If they've been with their ISP for more than about two-and-a-half years, they'll be wired. In between, the picture is a bit more mixed.

The laptop "3G mobile" thing is relatively recent, but I already know of at least two families who saw it as a solution to teenagers tending to hog bandwidth on the home connection. One of them has also had the foresight of making the teenager who owns the laptop pay for the connection...

Interesting... Because of the trains and my home connection I don't have one of these 3G thingys, I just use wi-fi.
