It was a terrible day in the world of motorsport yesterday, but here's hoping today is a better one. We've got lots going on in the world of Sidepodcast, which is good as we ramp up to the Hungarian weekend. Here are some of the things we've got going on:
- Yesterday's Debrief is now available in both the edited format and the uncut live stream. We talked about all manner of things including a little bit of politics, some silly season, and even Franck gets a mention. That must be a good show.
- We also talk about the phenomenon that is Sidepodradio. What started out as a bit of a joke from RG has turned into a real life plan to broadcast some Sidepodshows for 12 hours at the beginning of August. There's more about it on the wiki, but mentioning it here is really just an excuse to plug Alex's pilot music show.
- Finally, I forgot to mention that yesterday I wrote the Goodwood Roundup post that was promised in last week's Debrief. If there are any other blog entries or online photo sets that I have missed, please let us know and we can update the post.
That's all for now. It's Manic Monday, so I hope it is okay for everyone who dislikes the first day of the week. I will see you in the comments.
Awful day, RIP Henry
:(
Hello Monday
Monday is rubbish... Booo Hiss Booo
Agreed, thought if I was nice to it, I may have a decent one
My Monday is going to be spet getting rid of my stupid cold
My monday will be spent pretending it is sunday
I had Wine Flu the other day, terrible it was
#sidepodspace
According to the BBC, the main toilet in the ISS has broken down.
The times Blog is repoerting that The f2 cars are built by williams... http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/07/tragedy-for-the-surtees-family.html
I thought they designed it and built the prototype, but the actual race cars are built elsewhere?
You could say they are in the...
They can always go out on the porch ;)

Neighbours might see
Woah!
I'd risk it
wow.

i couldn't do that even if i wanted to.

Nuts
The sleeping panda when doohickey rests is great :)
I feel guilty waking a sleeping panda...
Is it on a shorter time limit now?
Right, i've got to sleep. Come on MWM! FINISH!!! 5 minutes left. I'm going to sleep well tonight!
Night all
It varies I think

To keep us on our toes?
Of course :)
Just realised what a silly expression that is...
For you it's longer so that you have to wait for the Panda to come like yesterday ;)
I think Mr C said it was shorter for testing purposes.
It was on 5 mins yesterday, i think its on about 15 now...
I was outwitted yesterday ;)
Well it's time for me to make like a sleeping panda (but not in a tree), so goodnight to one and all and here's hoping tomorrow is a better day.
lets hope, Night!
Night Andy
You missed the earlier comments. The US toilet that was only delivered two shuttles ago is u/s
THe porch is causing problems. Normally they could use the shuttle toilets but they vent waste water and now they would vent it straight at the porch so they are rationing the use of the shuttle toilet
Will they need an extra shuttle mission to fix it?
How insane can you be?
I'm confused about whether to put this in the thread with the discussion but which no-one will check, or in the current discussion in the current daily... so I'll just put it here.
Sidepodradio actually happening is an amazing idea. :-) I have no idea yet if I'll be around to hear it but I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun with all kinds of unique ideas and concepts dreamed up for the day.
THey don't know yet. 13 over-achievers up there an none of them can figure out what is wrong with the toilet. They may need a plumber on the next shuttle
I bet one of them has a bit of a red face, they should talk to that guy.
I think it is going to be a blast and I plan not to miss a minute of it and to be involved as much as I can.
They just mentioned Henry Surtees on BBC2
I'd like to be here but have possible other commitments that weekend - Dad's birthday, and my sister moving back down from London for a month before she goes to Spain for a year. This should be Fri/Sat though.
I have to navigate from birmingham to surrey with a massive hangover.
It will be difficult, but i will persevere. Do you have a show?
Me? Why would I want a show?
Cos it'd be fun?
Its just a bit of fun, you can do what ever you like!
Maybe for people who enjoy talking.
My head is all over the place at the minute. I had a good exercise and a (for me) good golf round after missing several weeks, which was good. Did the rounds at parents places. Come home to hear the Surtees news and am trying to correct misconceptions on Twitter which is starting to really annoy me.
Bedtime I think.
G'night Pat
Night...
Another one bites the dust!
So, what was this about Monza? :)
Well it was just an idea..
Go to the GP, I havent been to one before, and I thought it might be quite a good adventure!
Also It was cheaper than Spa!
Before yesterday, I would've probably said yes straight away. I found out my cousin's geting married in Greece, my hotel room is paid for a week for me. I'm sorta obliged. Will have a think though
Must do Spa one day, I love that track
Ah no worries...
There is always Abu Dhabi ;)
... and next season!
That's when he's getting married, I may make it home by Sunday
Think it's the Wednesday before
True
I wasnt sure about it, in fact it was just a whimsical idea...
I might have a chance for free tickets for abu ahabi, so i am hoping against hope for that...
But i definatly want to go to a GP next year, or Le Mans. Goodwood has given me the bug!
We talked about going to the British GP at the Science meet-up but nothing became of it.
Maybe we should organise something for Donnington next year
...Or silverstone!
I think there should be london sidepoddrinking meetups to formaly discuss sidepodsober meetups!
Giggles and I have the odd beer
You should really drink the even ones too... :P
I was talking about strange :)
He likes the elderflower kind ;)
Elderflower beer!???
Is that even drinkable?
First time we met up, Giggles live commented from his iPhone. He let the site choose his drink
They picked some Elderflower concoction!
That'd lad would do almost anything if he could upload it to drop.io :)
hahaha!
That sounds great... I am deprived of drinking out here, so i head to london quite a lot.
Give us a shout if you fancy a beer anytime
Cool, we should all have a SidepodDrink-up in the summer break
Sounds good!
Must run, but before I go, here's an interesting article from BOP concerning Bernie... and Ari.
http://www.britsonpole.com/why-ecclestone-has-harmed-f1-more-than-he-may-realise-and-why-vatanen-may-only-make-it-worse-post12038
Last thing: RIP Henry Surtees. Condolences to the Surtees family. :(
The article is trying to suggest that people look at Bernie's remarks on Hitler and assume that everyone in F1 is facist. That is a ridiculous argument.
To then admit to using an online translator and cleaning up a language they don't have any understandng of is just stupid. Ari is never going to be popular with the green lobby but the article misses the fundamental point. If we don't have Ari we have Todt. Todt is the selection of Max who it says is flawed due to everything that has surrounded him and Max was the choice of Bernie who they think is a facist.
So we have the choice of someone the the green lobby will pick on or the choice of a Max and Bernie who will follow their policies. Tough choice.
Go Ari !
I think Bernie will want Ari to take charge; from a pragmatic point of view he is the man the teams would like and i am sure he has noticed he is the man the fans would like.
Todt is also an unknown quantity as far as he is concerned, he has a history with max, and a working relationship, just because max sees him as the heir to his rule, doesn't mean Bernie can work with him in the same way...
Just listening to Alex' pilot radio show. Is there no end to Dr Giggles talent? .. Well done Sir!
Too kind! There is some rather headbanging music for this time of the morning Jackie!
I love rock .. "be mine be my little rock and roll queen" .. catchy
I thought it was spelt RAWK ;)
Morning all!
Morning!
So Gavin have you signed up to some actual factual Sidepodradio show?
I was trying to volenteer you for the Who's line is it anyway show: Who's startline is it anyway?
Nick is hosting with 4 guests... Steven Roy, Bassano and Lukeh have so far signed up.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
I wish I could... but I am on holiday that week :(
ah shucks! I'm on holiday that week too :(
Now you guys are making me feel bad for going to Spain :(
I'm going to Somerset! Hardly any distance at all, but there's no internet there apparently :(
Don't forget, if you want to sign up for a show of your own, we are absolutely accepting pre-records.
I haven't listened to the debrief yet so I will and let you guys know...
Ok, most of the chatter happened after we finished, so the replay is the best place to go. But if you got any questions, just let us know.
For Doctor Who fans:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8158556.stm
Oh my god, it's a bow tie. Boo.
I got a pack from the AGPC in the mail today, with a letter and a brochure, but all I really got out of it was PLEASE COME BACK, ITS CHEAPER!! PLEASE. WE BEG YOU.
Hmmm... Not sure about that... Hmmmm....
Although Indiana Jones wore a bow tie. So it might work... *hopes*
He has weird rolled up trouser legs too.
And do they convince you?
I didn't need convincing :D I shall ring them tomorrow.
Yeah I'm less happy about those than the bow tie!
David Tennant was styled after Jamie Oliver apparently.
Alguersuari confirmed for Hungary by Toro Rosso
Bless those teams getting several days of news out of what should be one announcement :)
I wonder if these words from Alguersuari were sincere or ironic:
"But already I feel that I am getting great support from the team, who have quite a reputation for looking after rookie drivers."
Buemi's still the rookie of the year though!
well, now that he has some competition ... :-)
Ahh... Ron Walker must be wishing that everyone that went this year is like you. ;)
they are smart putting tickets on sale at tax return time. My tax return paid for my Christmas flights though. I called my mum to tell her and she already knew :( surprise ruined :(
Awww. How did she find out, though?
someone I used to work with saw it on facebook and tracked her down in the building to tell her. I don't even recall adding this woman to my friends list!
Everyone is talking really loud today. Am I hungover without realising it?
At least you don't have a contractor using the cupboard in front of your desk to work on a piece of ceiling!
potentially, im listening to giggles's show, he's talking loudly too
like franck?
Kinda like Franck, yea. Maybe I do like it after all. :)
hehe!
thought you were going to say she reads the comments.
The giggles show was actually very good :D love it
Ooooh, Ben has added himself for a show on Sidepodradio called F1 & Design. Very cool.
And he's donated for the Sidepodcause. We're almost halfway to our target already, and we only came up with the idea yesterday!
I heart Sidepodpeeps.
I go away for one weekend and I have no idea what you are talking about!
What's the 'Sidepodcause'?
Go onto wiki, sidepodradio, it'll tell you all ya need to know
Creating Sidepodradio for 12 hours will cost us £10 an hour = £120. We are taking donations for the cause, and if we get over our target the rest will go to charity. Donations received so far are listed on the wiki.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
I shoulda just said that :)
donations through paypal?
Yup.
Perhaps I should write a blog post about Sidepodradio, for those that weren't tuned in to the post-debrief streaming.
Ah OK, thanks for that!
done.
Might be a good idea. Apologies for missing it and sounding like a fool here, but I was literally allowed 10 minutes of internet until late sunday night over the weekend...
I can't get the replay to load, it was trying for 3 hours before I gave up.
Ace! You just bought us an hour and we are now halfway there :)
Boo.
Good morning all.
Tooo, classic.
that'll teach me for sleeping!
odd. it's quite a big file, but not that big.
shall drop.io for you.
I was really quiet at first versus the music... I thought, "I could turn the music down" but Naaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. Instead I decided to turn me up :)
For those curious about Sidepodradio, this is pretty much what we know so far, I think:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/07/20/ever-dream-of-being-a-radio-dj/
Thanks!
I need to work out how to export visulizations. Couldn't work it out on Sunday.
It was sad to hear of Henry Surtees' death. I suppose a loose wheel is one of those things it's not really possible to defend against in an open-wheel car that already employs powerful tethers, but it's still a huge pity. Condolences to the Surtees family and the F2 paddock :(
hooray I was just about to watch some transcripting but instead I am watching some live action on the drop.io. Thanks Mr C :D
watch some transcripting? do some transcribing.
Darn that Mr C! :)
How come you don't have a Sidepodradio show yet, Amy?
because I was hoping no one would notice :D
But you must!
But I dont wannoooooooo. I am prepared to donate any amount to get out of the responsibility :D
That would, I suppose, work. Good idea Amy.
Hmm. We shall have to ask Steven later.
Gavin got ANOTHER shout out, on MWM, got an email read out!!!
Coool!
So I hear ... haven't got to that bit yet...
43-44 minutes into ep31
Cheers dude!
No worries, am having a podcast listening day
as I read my Aus 2010 brochure, I notice the following statement when they talk about the Wednesday behind the scenes tour: "be the first to see the new pit straight layout"
circuit changes ahoy? trying to fit the new teams in?
they'll have too, theres lots of circuits who wont have enough space. im looking forward to seeing the new teams in awnings round the back ;)
Indeed. :D Heheh!
Aww man, I'm not sure I liked Declan's comment :(
Trying to imagine Monaco. Water-Motorhomes
hehe, i think it was meant nicer than it sounded. your stuff is great, just ignore him :D
Morning everyone!
No word better to see upon opening up sidepodcast than ahoy! :D
Afternoon Nick.
Is it afternoon already?! oh wow, i havent got much done today lol
I have just recived my pitlane fanatic mug :D
It is awesome! will post pics later...
Podcast listening counts as getting stuff done in my book.
Yeah, but its been mainly MWM podcasts because they last so darn long, depending on the episode im not sure they can be classed as podcasts ;)
asuguri confirmed
I so don't have the patience to listen to that show
Gonna try harder to lose to you next time.
I am going to ask him for feedback now ... They still haven't sent a list of laptimes...
I tend to do it in shifts, sometimes i cant cope with the rants :D
What a shame - it's rather good!
Problem with me is I listen when I go to bed. And long shows I tend to fall asleep too.
Check on the listeners collective
Same, i close itunes and shut down, then it starts back from where i stopped the next day
Can't seem to find it :(
Me neither, boo
Christine have you seen the head of car concept at brawn is into pandas?
that might be stretching the truth, but PHIL ARNABOLDI listed under hobies:
I have two young children so most of my spare time involves unicorns, pandas, diggers and tractor
Tenuous panda-f1 linking over!
Love it! :)
This does need to be taken with a large helping of salt, but it is humerous...
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/opinion/382733/toro-rosso-explains-why-it-avoids-q3.html
Tis a Facebook group, isn't it?
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5508588715
Yeah but theres a specific thing we're looking for on there which they said they'd put on it, which i dont think they have
Oh yeah, I'm on the group but I asked for a list and it doesn't seem to be there. I was keen to blog about it and make some comparison graphs...
Ah, sorry. Misunderstood.
No worries :)
hehe, yeah that was posted the other day, great stuff :D
I heart Red Bull/Toro Rosso.
Oh dear... it's not nice :(
I love lists like that, my all time favourite was from Planet F1 at the end of 2007, they had "20 things Ferrari have learnt in 2007" and the same for Mclaren, which included some of my favourite lines....
"1. Lewis Hamilton is probably ready for a full race drive"
and
"18.Never ever ever ever ever ever let ITV run a feature on past British F1 World Champions until the trophy is mathematically won."
and
"8.Max Mosley's idea of "sporting fairness" is McLaren playing by the absolute letter of the law, and Ferrari telling him what that law is. "
:D
carnage: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8159096.stm
really? how bad?
Uh-oh - I have family travelling through Germany today...
Great stuff - I remember that one. P-F1 can be pretty funny at times...
That is, massive.
Wow, imagine getting the insurance details for all of them
The Ferrari one was also good....
"6. Red lights at the end of the pitlane mean stop. Don't they Felipe."
:D
in other news. i've found the sport i wish to follow in place of f1:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8158183.stm
Can I ask a favour first?
I would like some honest feedback about my blog ... do people get any benefit from it and can they understand it? Is it too dry? Could it be made better?
what have i missed?
I really, really like it. It breaks stats down in a way that is really easy to understand, and the writing isn't boring. I think you do a great job.
haha, if its all one guy's fault he will be in a bit of bother!
The american one from MWM made some not nice comments about it
I was about to say "it's not as good as Tennis" but then I saw that they are playing in Finland. Win!
Speaking of Tennis, the Fed Fund currently is at $24.
I've just received some feedback from Declan Brennan about my blog, and I'm not sure what to think of it.
i think its great. shows F1 in a different light, lots of stuff i'd have never thought of, lots of food for thought
He's Irish but based in the US, I think...
ah yes, same difference ;)
that reminds me, I like it because its different. If I'm honest I don't read a lot of blogs because its the same thing over and over and over again, but I haven't seen anything else like yours.
then you my friend, have to see this....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE92G9u9jaY&feature=channel
Welcome to Slamball :D
I concur
One ridiculous comment (you should probably ignore) is that there is quite a lot of blue in both your background an in your graphs!
If thats all i am pulling you up on, you must be doing something right!
really? boo :(
gavin, i love your blog, but stats posts are always going to attract criticism from people who think they're too cool for excel. the way i see it, you have two choices:
a) carry on as you are
b) add gratuitous pictures of scantily clad pit girls
personally i vote for the former.
seconded.
far too professional.
aha, :D
Yeah I'm trying to go for a nice easy colour scheme - but I am open to ideas of course (no pink and yellow though ;) )
declan said the site is a bit blue?
he said he got a bit confused by it all.
I'm emailing what he said to you now-...
cheers sir.
He just sent me a mail after I asked him for some feedback...
That was me... ;)
Is he even trying? I don't think it could be easier to understand which is why I like it!
apparently not ... I was quite surprised considering they had undertaken the seemingly complicated task of comparing different racing series and that he finds my blog difficult to understand?
You're just blue-ist! :P
haha, it me eyes, they are lazy.
One coment about it being had to take it then, perhaps you need a format more like a blog like Kotaku
Sent ;)
I don't follow... got a link?
weird... that link button is EVIL
Where they show just the headlines then you click to go into more detail.
It might make it easier to take in.
Just an idea tis all
http://kotaku.com/
Sorry... my battle with the link button continues, i didnt mean to post it!
How do I do that in 'free' wordpress ... a split post?
had evil can a button be?
Big red button? :)
it can make you spell 'how' wrong. its THAT evil :)
I am not sure if there is a template that does that.
Was just an idea to help break it up, I dont mind it how it is now, but i can understand some people find a lot of info up front confusing!
It is out to ruin everything i post... :P
It's a very good idea actually - I shall see how to implement it...
you know the link button works rather well when used in conjunction with the preview button...
there's a "more" tag in wordpress post admin. just add it like any other tag.
That was the problem!
I previewed 5 or 6 times and it wasn't doing what i wanted and then i accidentaly clicked post before i had finished writing and my comment came out all... rude
:D
heres a new story from the nz news
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/2611444/Hartley-not-ready-for-F1
Smart kid
So I just add 'more' as a tag to my post and it does it automatically?
got it. it's a shame he said what he did.
you have a niche blog that does exactly what it says on the tin. if we need stats we know exactly where to go. everything is cleanly laid out and i approve.
the homepage does contain a lot of graphs and i guess that can be rather overpowering on first impression, but a quick read of any of the content shows they're needed.
personally i wouldn't change anything.
I like your blog posts. But I don't read all of them because I'm not into Fantasy F1. That said BBC's Not Mole blog has a weights and predicted stop time and lap times post but it lacks what you have in yours so I prefer to read yours. The graphs are the stand out feature especially useful on the parade lap because often out of left field Mr C will ask a question which I wasn't expecting (which is one of the best bits) and by having your piece of paper in my hand it makes me sound like an expert. So I like your blog. Keep it up.
" I knew some time ago that Alguersuari would get the Toro Rosso drive and I have to say when I first heard the news, I was obviously disappointed,"
really doesn't match up with the general 'oh yes, I decided to stop being test driver, it was my decision' vibe
This is also very true.
in this format:
<!--more-->
Cheers! :D
So it's best not to copy his response here, right?
Sounds like he needs a big sponsor to pay as much as Repsol does...
100% New Zealand?
There is a more button on Wordpress, but I only recommend it for long posts. You don't want regular viewers to have to click too much, and you need something to tempt people to read more (ie. Graphs or pictures).
They wouldn't have $2 million to give him! There'd be an uproar worse than the inflatable rugby ball in paris pallava!
illusions = shattered ;)
the only local sponsor I can see on his overalls is LJ Hooker, a real estate company.
Guys,
Thanks a lot for your comments. It's a shame I received what I did, but it's great to know that you guys like it and find it useful, because I made this blog for you guys and that's all that matters really :)
LJ Hooker? Are you sure they're real estate ;)
Whoops :)
"Thank you Mr. Hooker!"
That's the spirit :)
Hehe that sounds like a bad film... what happened?
Alex is also wicked with graphs - that post about writing your novel draft was excellent!
Although I do always credit Gavin and I complained on air when we didn't have a post from you, as I did from Ollie. :)
Ah yeah that's because I had no internet that day ... finished the fuel weights post for Germany while the actual parade lap was circling!
Ah thanks! There hasn't be a day in probably 15 years (except when actually on holiday before I had a laptop light enough to take with me) that I haven't used excel or numbers.
And a big part of my day job is the visual display of quantitive information.
Gavin if you haven't read this then I would suggest you rush out and buy: http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_vdqi
It's a tad expensive but sooooooooo worth it.
Indeed I wasn't really complaining about you... I just missed it is all :)
:)
I was missing the internet too!
talking of which, i'm loving the ability to watch the replay show back on the ipod. much usefulness, even if i do say so myself!
Me too :)
If you aren't sure about Edward Tufte here's his video dissecting the design of the iPhone... http://www.edwardtufte.com/bboard/iphone-video.adp it was made before 3.0 of the software.
Looks like Schumi got a ride on the Nurburgring Rollercoaster
So was it closed or not? I thought it didn't have a safety certificate?
It wasn't running at full speed
They didn't have a certificate to go at it's fastest speed.
Pointless then!
You couldnt give me love nor money to go on that thing
Right all, i need some help, as you know i'm doing the 2CV event in a few weeks and was warned "You'll be workign with some seriously experienced guys, so do a lot of research and planning."
Now, i have the race results from this years 2CV races and the results from the past few 24 hour races....but drivers wont necessarily be in the same cars, and there will be new cars aswell, so i don't really know what kind of research i can do.
Any thoughts?
ahh, cool. i listen once i've finished the replay. although i am already convinced by the previous link.
Is there any sort of entry list?
driver bios. always a good filler. how many races have they done, when did they start?
Not until 1-2 weeks before.
lots of emailing? check.
Lots of facts about the cars. Top speeds, uh, other technical stuff... help me out people.
That really doesn't help. I'd say contact the teams involved and ask for who might be driving, any info about the cars and drivers etc.
ah but this being my problem, its club motorsport, 90% of teams dont have websites or 'proper' teams.
And stuff about the circuit too, particularly difficult corners, bits the drivers like, if there are any notable things in its history.
Cornering speeds of a 2CV
Refuelling andf pitstop knowledge
Driver info and ancedotes - rivalries?
Funny sponsors?
Tactics and strategy
Interviews?
I've got all the regs, and am going to find pictures of all hte cars used so far so that i can easily spot which one is which (cars dont generally change numbers but can change drivers) and am keeping myself up to date on the 2CV race forum, which is providing lots of helpful driver insights
Will you have access to information there or do you have to memorise it all?
I've printed lots of it off, and will probably take a clipboard and pad around with me, so can carry a minimum. and i'll take everything i have with me and put it in my tent just in case.
tent? how long are you there for?
Friday - Sunday
blimey. go you. assumed it was for an afternoon, apologies.
24 hour race? ;)
I thought we needed Amy's question asking expertise for the Quiz?
1 little show wont hurt... :)
That was the 'more' button coming into its own :D
@84 Steven Roy
Thank you for your lovely constructive analysis! Unfortunately, you have set up a straw man. Portraying a different argument from the one we are making and then calling it ridiculous, as well as trying to undermine us on ground we already concede.
Our actual argument is, in fact, extremely simple and can be expressed in a single sentence: Opinion formers already have it in for F1 and Vatanen's perceived views on climate change will make it worse.
We think you'll find that the paragraph from the Helsinki newspaper where Vatanen says climate change is the biggest hype he has experienced in his lifetime next to Stalinism is accurate enough.
We'll be happy to engage with you on the basis of *what we actually said* - but we would suggest maybe reading the original a bit more carefully before commenting on it further.
What on earth is an 'opinion former' ?
I dont understand what you are saying will happen, they will make it illegal to race cars?
I cant see this happening over the next 4 years, I think you are starting with a sensible point then extraperlating it far too much.
i was listening, honest!
i've missed something...
Hullo :)
:D
you will be getting a few voicemails over the weekend im sure :D
hello hello!! hows lou today?
thanks you :)
aternooon
Brilliant.
i'm good thanks :) feeling much better today, most things in the real world are sorted and am feeling pretty happy. how are you?
a bit cold-y but good i think :D
okay, read it now.
i have to agree with steven on the google translate thing. it's a very dangerous road to go down, lest you wish to accuse campos of building a horse and cart which pedalo must next year run with.
best thing to do is await kathi's arrival and ask for her opinion. until there's a sensible translation available, everything else is moot.
sorry BOP people, but google translate is simply a very dangerous tool in anyone's hands. our's more than most, admittedly.
Been there, done that, been scolded by Kathi :)
she hasn't heard last night's show yet either...
Duck and cover?
always
I love how it says "sometimes it even saves his life..." meaning, sometimes it does, sometimes it dosent...meaning...burt is no longer alive...
you can't say that!!
oooh, but i saw the ending, Burts fine :)
But he ducked and covered!
I heard that Australians wear more fluro vests per capita than any other country. I don't know if this is true but looking around the streets, they really are everywhere. Who needs duck and cover when you have fluro safety vests?
Australia is obsessed. there are isles and isles of different types of fluro clothing. You would think that in such a sunny country people would be able to see each other!
This did make me think of the line: "I like animals, that's why I like to kill 'em".
My office only has about 40 staff yet they insist that team leaders wear fluro vests so we can spot them on the floor. It's ridiculous.
The have to wear them inside? That is nuts...
When i was living in a hostel in Brisbane, one of the guys in my room had to wear a full on fluro suit, trousers, gloves, hat and all.. He went to work at 5 and literally glowed across the room as he left
Was his job as a host of "tight 'n' bright" themed parties? :D
Apparently Henry Surtees was worried about the lack of effective wheel tethering at the first race of the F2 calendar
http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/07/wheel-tethers-in-formula-two.html
haha, I think he was working on the railway!
But it was a scary sight to see!
righteo, I am off to bed. See you all tomorrow sidepodland :D
Here a link with the start at Brno:

See ya Amy.
Night Amy
I think its a hard one, like has been said before, where do you put the limit for the wheel teathers? No series is without its risks, even sportscars.
2 or 3 years ago f1 had proper wheel teathers which withstood really big accidents. I dont know what they have changed but clearly this season wheels have been flying off a lot more easily...
If the technology isn't being used, you have to ask why?
They aren't meant to keep the wheelson, they are just meant to take some of the momentum from the wheel instead of making the car an even bigger moving bullet
What i am trying to say though is, they have kept the wheels on effectivly in the past, have they been changed?

Joe has also said his piece on the incident.

Night, Amy. ;)
Steven should comment on what he says about the wall being to close, its a slightly different theory
yep, hes exactly right
what does steven think?
i do see what you mean, and it all depends on the angle/speed/type of crash.the cars are of 2005 F1 safety standards (but only interms of the monocoque i think)
I cant be certain on this but i think his point was that the problem is not the proximity of the barrier but its angle. It would be better to have the barrier closer than to have it at the angle it currently is at.
Hope i got that right Steven!
Its at that angle because of cars coming round that corner, i.e the corner before he came off is directly inline with that barrier. its just that he's spinning coming out that corner so hits the barrier at a funny angle
I was speculating that it was at that angle because of the steep slope behind it being at that angle.
But i better leave it at that, i haven't been there so i dont know the geography beyond what i have seen on TV; and i am sure Steven could make his point a lot better than i can!
I've walked round the GP circuit before and having read/heard stuff about Brands before, i know they couldnt move the barrier out any more, there is literally no more room.
For anyone obsessed with the wiki like me, I have found the Birthdays calendar thing a nightmare to use. It's all wonky, as well.
Thinking about making a tidier table, but wanna make sure no one minds? Have done a bit as an example.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Birthdays
Me likey that idea. More organised.
Ace. Will continue. Thanks RG.
Need any help, just call. or comment.
"the more i think about it, all this cheaper racing is great but surely we have to think about what a good set of wheel tethers would cost..."
Karun Chandhok
I found this tweet a bit disturbing - does this mean F2 cars do not have tethers or are they not as high quality as on other racing car series?
if anyone is interested in hearing me on radio, and practicing their french..
http://www.idfm98.fr/
i might get involved in the sidepodradio but i'm a little swamped at the moment. sounds a great idea!
Ooh, we'd love to have you on. Even if it's just a voicemail that would be awesome :)
f2 use f1 spec wheel tethers. karun was not at brands yesterday.
Ah the man i have been looking for!
I have a show on in the evening called who's starting line is it anyway.
Bacicly i give you an f1 driver and a scenario and you have to improvise a scene with the other person...
I need 4 contestants, i have 3... are you interested?
Evening
I want to do something. I just need to plan my time a bit at the moment cos things are a little non-sidepodcast friendly ;) Will ponder things tonight.
Unfortunately Mav is on holiday on the 2nd :(
Hey there... I have my Mug!
I am interested. Will consult my secretary and get back to you. But how? will i enroll myself on the wiki?
Hiya :)
Excellent .. did it come out okay?
Yeah that sounds good... there is a question mark in the 4th slot at the moment!
Hey Jackie.
One thing I'm wondering is how the quiz will work?
looks amazing... Will dropio!
Is there a quiz without Mav?
Coolio :D
I won't be around tomorrow so if someone else takes it within 36 hours, then I'll have to appear somewhere else in the lineup.
a good article from racecar engineering re: what was and was not being driven at brands yesterday.
can be pre-recorded and played out.
two stories the world needs to see: giant jellyfish in japan and the redneck games that were on last week
Unfortunately he won't be around for that either, I did suggest that. But .. I have asked PM, not sure if he'll do it though
If not, you'll just have to make do with me
if your questions are less tricky, we welcome you with open arms ;)
sniffle sniffle :(
My awesome Mug, thanks so much Jackie!

http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/mug-3-jpg
Mav will help me get some questions though so that part will be 50:50. I've just had a thought... wonder if Lou would help
wow! love that.
i like thoughts like that...
I'm finishing last next time, me wants one.
Ooh, it looks good. Glad you like it, you are most welcome... I want one noe LOL
Right, am off for something to eat.. be back in about an hour. If anyone see's Lou would you ask if she's interested?
can do.
thats awesome
Evening all.
I find it hard to get my head around the concepts and the graphs are a very useful tool to help explain it. If you could also title the graphs that would be helpful as sometimes I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I know it says it in the text, it just helps make it click for some reason.
Can you turn that Snap thing off though? You try and mouseover the graph to follow it and that window pops up, very annoying!
My problem with the race fuel analyses is that race-fuel qualifying just isn't very interesting to me. I don't want to have it explained to me by graphs and things. To be honest if they banned race fuel qualifying entirely I'd be very happy and we can focus on lap time comparisons.
Story about Henry is on BBC Londn News now
I'm assuming this means you've introduced yourself there? If you tell them who you are and what you're doing they should fall over themselves to help.
I can't imagine an FIA series not having tethers.. but I do wonder if they are F1-strength.
Where did you find this? I looked on the official F2 site's tech specs last night and I couldn't see it mentioned.
I did wonder if Karun jumped to conclusions like a lot of Twitterers did last night.
Ahh, thanks.
no worries. i think james allen updated his article earlier after checking up too.
Just saw their tweet of this, will RT.
I hope for his sake that nobody at the FIA saw what Karun wrote, or he could end up having a very frustrating career...
Nice :-)
I am doing this goodwood video... I hate all the parts with me in them... i am clearly an idiot... Why do people not tell me this on a regular basis?
You are an idiot.
Evening all.
Hi.
Things are very quiet here today it seems.
Hellllo lukeh
Oh Windows...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/windows-fail-jpg
oops. what did you do?
*waves*
oh dear! Is that actually a lot of boxes, or is that the thing where you drag it around and it leaves lots of drawings of boxes behind it..?
I think i tried to get premiere to open too many files at once...
It lost everything i had done so far :( luckily that wasnt much!
Draggy roundy thingy
you asked windows to multitask?
I wish I had a quiet day :(
Although Radio 1 just played Muse's new song as soon as I got in whcih was lovely :D
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay
I just asked it to open. It said no. Closed.
I think i need a mac to do this!
Thats pushing it.
video? yes.
My naration is really rubbish... I was going to give everyone a guided tour of goodwood, for the people who have never been but i think this was too ambitious, maybe i should just do the action? maybe some music over the bits where i am just walking around?
Good evening
evening
Fancy meeting you here!
it might not be as bad as you think
I just noticed that Mrs C had been editing the Birthdays page in the wiki and went to have a nose...
...is there any reason why there are no Mondays in December?
Its all getting changed, I wouldn't worry about it now. New format coming up.
Its not just that, the camera is too low and shakey!
that's how all the cool kids make movies now
no tripod?
:P
Hey, we use tripods y'know.
Evening all :)
Good evening Mr Woodwiss
Evening sire
But i am waking around goodwood making silly coments as i go!
hey
Hello sidepodcast
Helllllo Steven.
Everyone having a good day
Evening, lots of people ariving, nobody talking.
Tis like the pub with no beer. ;)
Hi. Message for you from Brits On Pole, somewhere down there. I read it at work today when I was supposed to be doing other things.
Hey Steven :D
Am just watching the cricket highlights finish while awaiting my food. Hungry so brain not working right
Theres nothing to talk about.
Oooh, a bird just flew past...
Speak for yourself :-)
I will dig it out. I assume they are not happy with me
Was it a Norwegian Blue parrot?
I think they claimed you were in the scarecrow building industry
NASA TV is beyond clueless. Just tuned in and they are doing interviews about the past and future of the space program while there is a spacewalk going on. We needto take that over and save NASA from themselves
I think they call it a, pigeon
Did it look like it was pining for the fjords?
This from people who want to decide the FIA president based on something they have translated online and then tweaked despite having no knowledge of the language
Thanks I could not find anything about this, but considering Karun said the following in an earlier tweet...
"just saw the news about surtees.... very surreal considering i saw him yesterday at brands. really feel for his parents..." so he was at Brands on Saturday.
I dub thee Baron Sugar of Clapton
heheheheh
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8159429.stm
The fact he tweeted what he tweeted before suggests he isn't the sharpest tool in the box though...
Just placed my order on Amazon for a Logitech DriveFX wheel for my 360. :D
fair enough, we know he wasn't on sunday.
Also, there's been a 259 car pile up in Germany. 66 people are reported dead :(
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8159290.stm
Does this mean the economy is going to underperfom like his business's?
baron alan??
ooooh yes
or the government will have one good idea and then try and milk it for the next 40 years.
earlier it was 100 cars and 60 people injured....bad times
I saw tweets from him on Sunday.. I think it was him. Wasn't he the one doing a kart race in Milton Keynes or was that someone else?
Your concerns were similar to mine - I actually I have enjoyed Karun tweets as they really allow you a little bit into to seeing life from a motor racing drivers' view. Mr C has confirmed they use the same tethers as in a F1 car.
You know, I haven't watched Top Gear yet. Was in my RWS WTCC race at Pau so had to miss it. To the iPlayer!
I guess that answers my question!
Will Buxton was yeah
i am inside your mind.
*waves*
Oooh that reminds me, i have to iplayer Moto GP, apparently it was goood
*looks at proper pics of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor*
Woah.
Retro!
Do you live in his eyes as well? (Bill Bailey reference there :D )
He is very safe from any FIA attack. His father was considering running for presifent and only decided against it atthe last moment
:D
What did he say?
Definitely worth a watch
!!!
See ya in 50 odd minutes then
I really need to read ahead don't i
Same here
*Top Gear starts on iPlayer.*
Nah, i can multitask ;)
I'll just use the pop out player, i have to do some 2CV work too, woop woop
Now....i really don't like watching football at all...BUT...it does bring a smile my face when something like this happens...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8158802.stm
Something about how cheap racing is a good idea, but how much do you really save by not putting wheel tethers on the car.
5th gear just started on 5
Ah i read something similar to that on a blog comment. Silly people
Aww, 27-0. Why can't we beat minnows 27-0. We only beat Bournemouth 3-0. I want to win 27-0. Not fair.
Its one thing for a fan to write it on a blog, its another for an ambitious driver to criticize the FIA and williams without foundation.
I am not following him, but i find it surprising he hasn't apologised
When is the 2CV race Jon?
Isn't the win the important bit?
Its a friendly and we want to look good.
I put Karun direct quotes (tweets - karunchandhok) in this comment stream earlier. Hopefully it does not get picked up by a silly website (you know who I mean) and reported on.
7-9 August
Gonna make an effort to listen, just for you.
I love Jezza's joy at finally fixing something :D
Arent you nice :D
Well I sure am
I'm assuming you mean a certain agency rather than the people involved in the discussion earlier. BOP are usually pretty good.
To be honest neither FIA nor Williams are mentioned - it was a tweet and he is a GP2 not a F2 driver. It was not very bright - lets just leave it as he is obviously also concerned and has shown sympathy publicly to the Surtees family as has Felipe (on his website) and Jenson (in a tweet). His ;latest tweet was that dad was in the kitchen cooking up his famous Dal for dinner.
Shame it wasn't a week earlier or you could have been the on site reporter for sidepodradio.
Are your preparations going well?
Ish, theres not a great deal i can do as its club racing (I.e no driver sites/team sites) but i've got a list of all the drivers and their results this season which im currently working on, and i now have photos of each car so i can learn which is which. Other than that, i'm just reading through regs, i've got a documentary about 2CV that i'm going to watch again a few times, learn some tech regs, and keep an eye on the 2CV race forum. Any idea for anything else you think i should look into?
Where and when is the race before the 24hr? Can you go?
Its on Snetterton on 8th and 9th August, its open to the public and being a club race i should think you can get into the pits to meet people and see the cars (the ones that are broken...) up close. And you get to hear your very own sidepodfriend :D
Good english there...
It's AT Snetterton
That's not what I asked :-)
I am annoyed at my bank, they have not done what I asked them to.
Does anyone know how to make a clip play at double speed in Adobe premiere elements?
whoooooopsiedoodles.
i really should read the question.
the race before it has already gone, was at the end of last month at oulton
i almost tried to do the same thing for the show yesterday though. i was working on the angle that max cut to many corners in his insistence that a series could be made so cheaply.
after about 30mins research, using nothing but google it became clear that all modern open-wheel series run wheel tethers these days and f2 was no different.
am surprised karun didn't know this mind you.
ah ok, Oulton would probably have been a fair old trek as well.
do you know where you will be talking from?
Put play speed at 200%? I used it when I was in 6th form so I have a vague memory of how it works.
some pits stuff and commentary box stuff aswell...potentially, i asked more for pits stuff, but i'll do whatever really.
That should be it.
I need a cup of tea.
Though to be fair, I used it in February and forgot, so don't worry.
I think i have worked out a way to do it using the time line...
Agency and certain website(s). In other words it should not be quoted as factual. A number of threads on discussion forums do say similar stuff - at least we now know F2 cars use the same tethers as F1 cars.
cool :-)
how do they identify the cars at night?
hahaha, i have no idea, i'm struggling with full light. some put coloured lights on top of their cars apparently
I could not find any source supporting this - but it would be what we would call "best practise". The poor Surtees family though - such a freak accident and Henry so young - very bad luck.
i found plenty saying they were in the design, but nothing until today said they were also to f1 standard.
A question... I seem to remember the first edition F1 tethers weren't strong enough so they made them double-tethers. My question is.. when was this change made?
one thing i haven't managed to clarify yet, is i thought that f1 now used two tethers per wheel (at varying strengths)? if that's the case how many do f2 use?
Are you and Pat the same person or what? :)
very, very scary!!
See now I'm reading your mind.. my next question would have been were the 2005 regs one tether or two? And if one, was that year chosen because it is a junior formula?
Do they still do this?
Earlier I posted some videos of ralph at Indy, a few years back showing how the wheels seemed to stay on the car a lot better then than what we have seen in F1 this year.
Hah :-)
i saw them, but they were a different type of accident, so i don't think it's comparable.
I thought they looked pretty similar to the impacts we had at Melbourne, perhaps even faster, but the tethers held...
oh so very, very dear:
"It seems very strange that the wheels came off like that in the span of a few seconds from two different car crashes. Wheels coming off have not been seen in any Formula in recent times." says Grand Prix 2 driver Karun Chandhok.
Here is a direct quote from Jonathan Palmer...
"The Williams F1 designed Formula 2 cars comply with the FIA 2005 F1 safety standards, including the fitment of wheel tethers to reduce the risk of wheels coming off in accidents. The F2 car also includes the latest F1 standards of driver head protection with high cockpit sides and lateral deformable structures. As with F1 however, wheel tethers cannot provide an absolute guarantee that a wheel will not come off in an accident and in a single-seater race car the front of the head is inevitably exposed to the risk, however small, of being hit by another car or component."
source: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77102
the videos you found were from a banked oval though?
I am amazed at the ignorance of some drivers.
The guy is clearly a joke, who doesn't know what he is spouting off about.
Good luck with that super licence application....
he's a commentator right? someone has to take the mic from him asap.
he drives in GP2.
My only explanation is its either
a) heat of a moment thing or
b) mistranslation or miscommunication he has had.
Evening :)
Helllllo Rachel
But it was an impact from hitting a wall after not being able to take a corner... I dont think the banking makes much difference..
Of course no too accidents are the same, but my main point was that 04-06 there were far fewer incidents where wheels flew off compared to now.
Not that I am aware of, unless he is on a feed I don't watch, maybe he works for Indian or Asian TV.
Hehe lllls.
did you see Harry Potter in the end?
Brits on Pole
Shame you didn't just say that in your post.
Yesterday on this site we spent a lot of time discussing people using online translation services and publishing news based on this flawed method. You not only used such a service but then modified the result despite having no knowledge of the language concerned. If you have a basis for your argument about Vatanen's views I will give you a serious response but if you are going to use such a flawed method then I am going to be instantly dismissive as I was last night.
We have had almost two decades of Bernie foing what he wants with F1 aided by his sidekick in the president's office. The WRC has been destroyed to make sure it is not a threat to F1 the WSC no longer exists because it was becoming too popular.
Max gave Bernie a century's worth of commercial rights for $3 million per year when Bernie is charging several times that for a single race and then almost over night Bernie sold on the rights for about 10 times what he paid for them with none of that going to the FIA. Allegedly quite a lot of it made its way into Max's pocket which necessitated his hasty departure to Monaco.
Part of the process of building F1 into the cash cow it is today was to take Ferrari from being a complete shambles into being the pre-eminent team. This Bernie and Max did with the involvement of Todt. We know of some very dodgy deals that were done to ensure this happened including Ferrari having a veto on technology of other teams and Ferrari having a massive financial advantage. No doubt there are others that have yet to become public.
Vatanen may attracet some heat from the green lobby and if the choice was him or someone squeaky clean with no association with the current regime that may be enough to sway me but that is not the case.
We have the option of Vatanen with a possible green trouble or a continuation of the current corrupt regime. Aside from the known failings of Ecclestone and Mosley we have Max's chief henchman Donnelly who wiped any reference of Ferrari being a customer from his company's website at the time of his appointment and has more recently has taken an interest in the Manor team and despite supposedly being part of the stewarding process has spent time at races trying to break FOTA.
We have also had his involvement in the Spa farce last year where he carried out the driver interviews but the stewards signed the judgement. Then at the ICA hearing into this incident we had Charlie Whiting being proved as lying during the hearing when he made comments about Tony Scott-Andrews which McLaren's QC proved were lies by producing a signed statement from TSA.
Of course we now know that that judgement adn the Massa non-penalty in Valencia were part of a back door deal with Ferrari. Whiting is also culpable for the illegal Ferrari which won the forst race of 2007 which lead to the whole spy nonsense. Nigel Stepney who was responsible for ensuring that the Ferrari complied with the rules noticed that the floor was a mass damper and therefore illegal. He reported this to the management headed by Jean Todt who told him they were going to race it anyway.
Stepney then sought clarification from Whiting who never replied to him but somehow a car which both Todt and Whiting knew was illegal passed scrutineering and won the race (the points from which eventually made Raikkonen champion) only for the floor to be declared illegal for future races.
I really could spend the rest of the night adding to my argument but I really don't see the point. We have a choice of continuing with the current corrupt regime or replacing it with Vatanen and maybe taking a little heat from the green lobby. Of course he could do something green like generating several thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide developing many KERS systems which never worked.
In an effort to ensure clarity I should point out that everything I have said is public domain and no online translation was used.
It wouldn't be a mistranslation, I'm fairly sure he's lived here since F3 and that was ages ago
Hi
think he turns up on starsports asia during f1 races.
Yes. Thought about running away when I went to go to the toilet, thought about logistics and realised it would take a long while to go home.
This is me following instructions ;)
""It's now confirmed that the webcast will be broadcast on the club website, www.2cvracing.org.uk"
Full coverage of the commentary of the 2CV 24 Hour Race from Snetterton"
Plug over.
Not sure what else you can do. There were some regional 2CV championships. The Scottish Motor Racing Club ran one for a few years. They may have some info.
Actually I see your point, the newspaper could have mistranslated it.
if you fancy doing a guest post to plug your endeavors jon, we're all ears. it's great that you're doing this, so please plug away.
From what? The HT is an English paper and KC speaks English...
do you mean after?
It all depends on the angle of the impact, speed, what they impact etc
before and after is good.
- here's what i'm doing, where i'm doing it and all the prep i have to put in
- here's how it went
sounds like something really interesting to me. am quite excited for you.
Sorry, that came across harsher than i intended!
Ah right.
oooh ok, aww thanks :) i'm quite excited now, rattther nervous too, but should be fun. ill give it some though.
I do that all the time!
It would be brillo :)
And remember to plug the site the weekend of the race because no-one here has a good memory
lol, thinking about running away from a film is pretty... extreme. Leaving is all well and good, but actually legging it would be funny.
i'll have a quick mash of the keyboard in a bit :)
I shall try, if not then i'll probably voicemail on Friday evening anyway, so that may give Mr and Mrs C a poke if they've forgotten ;)
If Ari said the following or implied anything similar to the following
""Ari Vatanen has personally told you that he has zero interest in reducing emissions in any way shape or form?"
he also has little grasp of reality in the outside of motorsport. I hope this is complete nonsence.
#sidepodspace
NASA are definitely trying to keep Christine happy. This spacewalk is 45 minutes behind schedule.
It is now 18 minutes till the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing.
Why should he?
There isn't a law requiring everyone to believe in the global warming theory (YET!)

Amy is doing the breakfast show with Journeyer. We were just waiting for Amy to decide when a convenient time was. She was volunteered on the show.
We don't want to have a day of sidepodradio with only Christine as a female voice. We need to aim for 50/50ish male/female/
LMAO at the end of TG "And if I might make a suggestion, gentlemen.....run!"
I still have 20 minutes left of Moto GP, tis good
There is very clear (measured) evidence for the fastest rate of increase in temperature and atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels the planet has ever seen. These are triggering atmosphere-ocean-land feedback systems that will further speed up the above processes. This will provide greater energy in form of cyclonic air movements which further destabilise climate systems. The biggest concern arising from this is changed conditions for food production.
The issue of climate change is very real, the Great Global Climate Swindle aired on channel 4 - was correctly named it was a swindle as it completely distorted and misrepresented our current knowledge of the subject.
did you hear bill gates is working on cows that don't break wind?
do they go blue and refuse to moove?
:)
i fear for our planet if we've left bill in charge.
Only NASA would create a;; sorts of web based feature to mark the 40th anniversay of Apollo 11 and schedule a spacewalk at the same time.
That Alguersuari. He's a cool dude isn't he? :-D
That can't be him?! I do hope it is though!
Are you referring to the Bovine genome project. Inserting genes and the gene technology is not exactly a precise science so unintended side-effects usually accompany any GMO.
In the process of writing up about the RWS WTCC event at Pau from my P.O.V for ZD.
not a clue, i just read the story today. he said:
"We're going to make the cows that don't fart. You name it, we've got it under control."
i feel better already. you?
Windows 7 is really something
:P
hehe, I heart him. :)
omg, wtg my bff!
:D
It cannot be worse than Vista can it?
Wechoosethemoon was set up by the JFK Library and Museum and has been running "real time" since the 40th anniversary of the launch
uh oh, abbreviation overload. Stand back.
how the heck did you find that??
i had to look up 'wtg', shows how down i am with the kids
I'm your Best Friend Forever? I'm honoured :P
True, Vista does worse things than causing cow flatutance
My bff Jill?
Erm....never mind.
idk :(
TSNF!
Evening!
I tell you what annoys me more than people saying Vista's bad (although they are right, and it is quite amusing) its people saying Vista's bad but actually meaning Office 2007
good job she didn't miss an f off. or it would be reallly scary

goooooooood evening
I think he should go back to grass roots and build an OS that does not crash! Of course it will need to be Unix based to do this!

Hellllllo lou
NASA also have a load of stuff on their site including realtime audio from the mission.
Was sent it by someone who should probably work for Mi5!
i'm gone for the afternoon and when i come back you are speaking another language!
so how has everyone's day been?
I mean Vista, while it is true that that third-party drivers and hardware do cause a lot of blue screening in Windows OS, Vista as an OS was complete rubbish unless you had lots of memory resources and a good AV installed.

:D
I think you mean TGFS
rly? like omg, idk
I'm tempted to just speak to people tomorrow in work with responses like 'laugh out loud' or 'rolling on the floor laughing' to see their reaction
yh, gd idea lol
Pat,
Thanks mate - how the heck do I turn off the snap thingy anyone?

not nice
Aww not you mr RG. It's that silly language. It's evil. Evil I tellsya.
Thats okay. I just know too much.
Just finished assembling the first edit of the first of my goodwood videos...
phew.. about half way to having it done i think...
You can just click on the graph and it will open in a new window without the snap thing!
I posted some comments on your latest posting - it provides a lot of clarity that explains the outcome. If I were Brawn I would be worried!
Do you know how thankful I am? I hated that feature!
u kno wen thngs r bad wn parents txtspk
Pat,
emailed you on gmail ... you wanna see it dude!
rgr
It really annoys me! Even on sites that use it to preview other websites. I just want to see what site it links to, I don't need to see it!
For the graphs it was a distraction.
Not a fan?
I trhink it's kinda cool. I like the retroness of it all after the modern turn of Ecclestone and Tennant, but at the same time, I'm too used to Tennant's Doctor to be too enthusiastic about this look. But I do like it. It's a strange emotion really.
Not sure about the jacket mind you... looks like one of my uni lecturers...
Not a fan of bow ties. If it was a regular tie, it would be completely different, I reckon.
Perhaps a bowler hat would complete the look.
:D
Does this have anything to do with the fact that a certain...

*ahem*
wears one?
I know just the man for the job.
The only person who should wear a bow tie is Harold Bishop.
Oh I remember him.
Replacing Matt Smith with harold Bishop as the Doctor is possible the greatest idea I've heard relating to the series.
we should've asked alex if he had one.
i agree :)
That is inspired. I haven't watched Doctore Who in many many years but I would watch that.
I'm sorry but this is photoshop material Christine.
I would DEFINITELY watch that
And another similarly dressed, but rather larger person to travel around with?
I don't - I don't think... I do have a ridiculous morning suit though with tails that I bought in a charity shop for 4 pounds.
You have to do that. So what else is Doctor Harold going to wear? When I write Doctor I think Valentino Rossi. Rossi/Harold Bishop is an odd combination.
Matt Bishop is The Doctor?
I love how we've gone
Matt smith - bowties - harold bishop - valentino rossi.

Never :D
No-one is as much of a legend as Harold Bishop is
I may have an image for you to add soon... ;)
Of course not.

Matt Bishop appears wearing a bow tie, clutching a press release and holding a tuba under his other arm.

Reading far too slowly to make sense
The Sulartins have arrived and while we got rid of the one living inside of Montoya we still have work to do. While you all go and do that I will attempt to play the theme tune on my tuba

Oooh SofaF1 championship results announced. Pat W bagging loads of points this time and Mr C joint second with Aitch.
The less said about Christine and my performance the better...

Before you complain at my useless predictions ahead of my radio sow, I have in fact, not changed my predictions since Australia.
Oh for... there'll be no living with him.
I thought Christine was doing really really well at the beginning
Nooooooooo
The power of harold doctor has caused photoshop to kerplode in a fit of awesomeocity. :(
That Nick is not me? me? I am confused in an ever spiralling decent to doom...
her headstone will likely read the same.
Which says a lot about the people below me
nooooo
I've just read an article that suggests historians of the future might think that Windows 98 was the 91st release of Windows after Windows 7 :D
In fact Stew was complaining about that very fact. Although some people haven't been playing the whole season.
Does anyone know where i can get music that i can legally use for my video? Preferably music that isnt being played by 13 year olds in their parents garden shed?
apple loops.
ahem, sorry.
No. If it's any help to you it confuses me every time I see you on here I think ah it must be Nick. But it isn't... It's Nick.
The SofaF1 Nick is my former housemate and friend since we were around 12.
Ah that is good... I was a bit worried i had started doing web based things i couldnt remember!
They have fruit loops in my local grocery store, but i cant see them helping
Yeah got caught with a phone call, responding now.
:D
No worries, just wanted to make sure your address was correct!
Is that a dessert? ;)
It's not brilliant but...

i can't help but be smug sometimes. apologies.
More like a breakfast cereal. In America.
I think the only SofaF1 person other than me to have made it over here is fourstar.
I had to try very hard not to appear smug today.
And yet we have invaded SofaF1!
I'm being wordy, if that's ok
Everytime you are smug I can just throw Logic in your face.
rats!
what happened?
Wordy is fine ;)
So bacicly the music industry bacily havent worked out a way to get copyright free music to the 90odd % of people that dont have macs?
Guess its not my fault then...
:D
Not all of the podsafe stuff is bad.
How do you find it?
music.mevio.com
I think that's for the best! They all needed a bit of shaking up over there. Although fourstar and I were the two previous winners of the championship it's going to be tricky this time. Nick has previously come second every time.
Oh, they've changed it again, now I get what Alex was talking about!
http://www.musicalley.com/
what??
Yes it's like an Alley for Music without tins and pans, but for the internet with dot com on the end.
I think that's how I put it - clear as usual :)
you say changed it...
You have to pay for this? Is there a slightly more 'free' option? :P
You mean you haven't listened to Giggles Radio? That is what he said.
Hehehe, I liked your description, I thought perhaps it was a different site. But no, they've changed their name for about the third time in as many months.
You have to pay?
Uh oh!
If you sign up as a producer it is free, isn't it?
99cents to download apparently?
Perfect. Lou was worried about having nothing to say and now she will have questions to read.
Go Lou!
Although... I did look today and they seem to have changed their terms and conditions again too...
There might be something about mentioning the site every time on the show every time you play a track. It's hard to follow :(

Please make it happen BBC. get some F1 advertising in there too see whilst getting the aussie fans into dr who.
For all those who watched TG last night - you know that 210mph Bugatti speeding ticket is a fake?
it used to be a one-liner :(
they want all sorts of feeds, addresses, phone numbers... seems very complex
I (heart) you
I can't even find their terms and conditions anymore.
I ♥ lukeh

Yea. It is geared towards podcasters, particularly ongoing music shows.
be easier to just by a mac.
awesomeness!!
Freat stuff Lukeh

Great
They have to show they are a reasonable company by unrestricting the iphone first ;)

Moby is friendly http://mobygratis.com/film-music.html :D
I've put a cropped version as the group pic (its too big, boo) and put the full one in the photos section (yeyy)
To coin a phrase from the great man himself...
Mind = Blown
It's good that it says webcasts as well as podcasts now. I don't think it did when I first read those.
I know of one that isn't a fake, thought it was the same one.
fair point. it's not quite the vibe the company started out with mind you.
Flibster would know the dude probably ... where is he ATM?
No, but it's been turning that way gradually for a while.
last seen heading towards green hell.
Still trying to find the Nurburgring, I guess.
I don't see the reasoning. Get the right tool for the job.
Apparently some guy photoshopped it. The actual ticket was for a 2.0l Infiniti G35 doing 100mph.
Probably still trying to get there. My family were travelling back through Germany today and were trapped in a queue for hours !
anyone have a blackberry? this comment sounds interesting:
http://www.f1minute.com/podcast/#comment-7019
Its more of a morality issue. This sort of thing will get worse and worse unless it is halted soon. I cant really do anything about it but I am boycotting them until they behave properly.
stupid computers!!!
I wrote a very long and detailed email to Gavin in Gmail. I press backspace a few times to delete a character. Browser goes back several previous pages. I press forward. Email no longer there. GRRR
apple? what have i missed?
Clarkson calls it a RaspBerry
You're kidding :(
I've been waiting for it too - is it not cached at all?
Tying the phone to one provider. Its just the first step down a very steep hill.
Molly Wood agrees. She'd be a happy bunny sans iPhone!
all this photobishopping has got me in the mood for Dr Who now, and am listening to the wonderful soundtracks by Murray Gold.
I [heart] the song doomsday, the song that played when Rose and the Doctor got seperated, although it's sad and soppy. But brilliant. :)
don't all manufactures do that?
you can only get the android-g1-googly-thingy on t-mobile in this country, which is why christine had to switch.
That's a pretty common approach though. O2 also have the exclusive on the Palm Pre.
Thats an open platform though its quite different, there are several android phones about now. There are also HTC phones available for all the other networks.
What i object to apple doing is locking content to a provider. If companies like them get their way then its only a matter of time until the wider web starts to be locked off in a similar way.
I still don't see the issue, the iPhone is available on many different providers across the world, just not all providers in all countries.
What really annoys me is that Gmail automatically saves drafts, so I didn't save it manually. I go to the drafts folder - not there.
they're just doing what their competitors are doing. the government should legislate against such things as they have done in europe, which apple have complied with.
i can't fathom why you're making your video editing life difficult for yourself, just because apple do what every other handset manufacturer currently does. but fair enough.
Its the fist step though, what if apple said you cant access itunes unless you are with o2 broadband for example?
A couple of years ago people would have been horrified. Now it doesnt seem all that different from how the iphone is sold.
So it's gone then ... not tonight I guess? :(
just a thought, how do I make words vanish in this box again?
which box?
Trying to remember what i wrote.
never mind
oh, gmail? sorry, assumed you meant doohickey.
I did, the filter box. But I'm writing this email instead now.
Apple are the only handset manufacturer who control content though. I suppose you could argue the pre will too, but that is simply copying the Iphone's model.
sorry, that gmail thing put me in a bad mood
no worries. just type in the filter box, top right, and it'll find what you're looking for.
i thought nokia had the idea first and apple copied them? only nokia's isn't too successful right now.
regardless, i don't see why it stops you buying an imac?
Content in the form of applications, yes and for good reasons.
You can still get the Internet though.
Most handsets are availble for any network. Apple only offer the iphone on one network per country and there is only one reason anyone has monopoly suppliers. That is to keep the price up. Clearly Apple want to maintain their premium position and have no interest in seeing companies discounting their product.
Anyone else notice that if you have to login to use wifi on iPod 3.0 it doesn't work as well as before?
There isnt anything really.. I will get a macbook when i get an iphone, but at the moment i cant see any reason to get one.
Might go down the android route instead, will have a look at the handsets in a month or so
not smartphones? cheap handsets, yes.
the android is rather awesome too.
login to public wifi, or your home network?
Actually some countries have multiple providers - Australia and Switzerland to name but two.
Who knows, in the future, the exclusive deals may end. Watch the keynote where they announced iPhone MMS and tethering, both features that were "except in the USA". Listen to the audience reaction.
Exactly. Since those started coming in the marketing has changed completely and that can only be to keep the prices artifically high.
Why tie the two together? Macs work just fine without an iPhone and you can easily use an iPhone with Windows, just as you can with any iPod.
haha i am not letting apple software any where near my pc!
I learned that lesson a long time ago!
i guess so. to me the g1 represents value for money and the iphone represents value for money. they're tied to a single operator, and they might be cheaper if they weren't, but i don't think christine as ever bemoaned the price she pays for hers.
Gavin, I have replied, I think I remembered most of it
Not even Safari? :D
that isn't what i initially suggested though?
my original point was simply, that your life would've been much easier if you'd produced your movie on a mac. and i stand by that.
There are plenty of people who want to pay the price currently being charged. The overwhelming majority of the iPhone owners I talk to every day say that they "love" their iPhone, even those who are having problems.
windows movie maker is brilliant fun though
if your idea of brilliant fun is dealing with the impatience and unprediactablity of unstable products unable to cope with the single click of a mouse button and generally handling media in a media based application, of course.
Excellent :-)
Cheers Pat - loads of good ideas there!
♥
Safari tried to strangle my PC
:D iMovie is fun too, but in a completely different way.
But how many people have not bought them because ofthe price and/or dislike of Apple's choice of network.
About 8 years ago or so i tried to watch a video which was in an annoying format called quicktime.
I downloaded this quicktime player which came bundled with a then unknown price of software called itunes. One day itunes decided it wanted to scan my music library and delete about a third of everything that was in there.
So i am not a fan. Apple make brilliant software for their own computers, but i think it becomes a completely different beast when transferred to a PC
Plenty. Including me.
I like this Nick.
My mate hated iTunes because it wouldn't play any of his songs. The silly bugger was accessing his songs on his friends computer so when he moved to a different flat it stopped working!
you know it's annoying because microsoft did their level best to kill it and make it unusable, right?
:D
I didnt have O2 signal here untill a month ago, so that was a small reason not to get one...
I dont think apple's software helped it much either!
windows does seem to absolutely hate Quicktime, true. It might as well code (hah!) a message into windows saying 'No. NO! GO AWAY.' or something when trying to watch quicktime videos
That should be microsoft, not Windows.
apparently that is exactly what happened. depending on who's version of events you believe of course.
home is fine - I am talking about public wifi where you have to use a webpage to log on...
Now why would they do a silly thing like that? :)
No probs. It would have helped if he'd been clearer!
Is it wrong of me that I no longer care if Apple produced software runs on Windows or not?
technically, and i'm talking purely at the bits and bytes level. quicktime is a vastly superior format to flash, which is the format microsoft championed over quicktime.
vastly probably isn't a strong enough word. but trust me, if you had to do video stuff a lot, you'd come to the same conclusion before lunchtime.
Yes, because iTunes + iPod needs to run on PC's!
i care, because doohickey and lclt work much, much better on safari on windows than they do on ff, ie, opera or chrome.
i know this because i've spent days and days peering at and fixing the blooming things.
ooh! I just remembered a fantastic bit of logic from today. We had to watch a new short safety video today in work on our lunches that had newer stuff we were required to see blah blah blah, and it had a wonderful moment where it mentioned people who steal from our chain of supermarkets and what to do. Now, the eagle eyed of us noticed that the robber in question simply stole carrier bags from the shop in the video which got us asking...
why would a robber steal just carrier bags from a supermarket? furthermore, is this even possible when they are free? our manager wasn;t sure how to answer :D just kinda made my day a lot more amusing...
it's a simple life, I know... :P
#sidepodspace
Today's spacewalk has just finished. I have had it on in the background but I haven't really been paying much attention to it. They did everything they were scheduled to do except the installation of a video camera which will be scheduled into another spacewalk on this mission.
Tomorrow is robotics day with the various robotic arms putting some stuff on the porch. Towards the end of the day Wednesday's two spacewalkers go and have a campout in the airlock and hope that no-one presses the open airlock button.
Technicaly carrier bags aren't free any more. If you don't bring your own, they charge you for having to use the normal plastic ones.
But flash was just a plugin you install and forget about it. Quicktime was a great monster of a programme which (regardless of who's fault this was) stuttered, crashed and froze.
Forcing people to download extra software they didn't want probably didn't help their cause much either
Carrier bags are free from us though!
Not in all stores
At LIdl and Aldi... still free most other places
Not for long they won't be - too expensive for the shop!
true enough. but it was bigger for a reason. one of which being that it handled video properly.
i totally see why flash won the battle though.
It's still stealing though because effectively the bags are free with whatever people buy.
I just found it funny that, for the context of a supermarket, all they could muster were stealing carrier bags is all :)
Could've made it interesting! Like a checkout desk or something
The principle of it is still stealing ... and if they steal that then they might go for other stuff?
So I've caught up again, and found the umpteenth discussion of Apple vs MS. I've had 11 years of this so-called 'discussion' (read: polite slanging match - guess which word I was filtering earlier) on various motorsport groups, so you could say I'm a bit fed up of the pair of them, so I only run the OS, and MS Office (because MS Office is better than Open Office.. or, it was). I won't tie myself to a media player that insists on proprietary formats, whether that is the iTunes format or WMA or whatever. Even if I ran a Mac I'd run Winamp or something else. Winamp, MP3, Sorted.
They have never been free. The cost is built into the price of the goods just as with any other overhead.
Darn forgot about that.
They are also unusual because they attract VAT throughout their manufacturing and wholesale process and are then given away for free.
Open Office is nearly as good as Office but annoyingly the Excel equivalent is not quite as good as the MS version (at least for graphs).
I use VLC player for my video stuff as it's almost universal - even plays .flv files now... and I use iTunes in m4a format because I have an iPod and want to make the most of my space...
Anything is better than a program that deletes data in a spreadsheet just because it's hidden.
But the amount of bags they buy, the cost is minimal.
I've got graphs for a forthcoming blog feature. Can't mess with the graphs!
absolutely. the difference is i think, you're not approaching this as someone who creates a lot of media content, and/or has to deal with problems relating to the digesting of said content across multiple platforms
it's far more complicated for us, and we just couldn't do sidepodcast using windows. it simply isn't possible.
;)
I'm so glad Flibster isn't here with his talk of FLAC.
I use VLC too. I started to use m4a on Winamp - bought a new car stereo that can take a USB stick, guess what, plays mp3 but not m4a. Gutted. Now I have to re-encode things.
How do you filter out more than two things?
Ooo. Can I use that quote?
he's right to a degree. flac is a better format than mp3. just like quicktime is a better format than flash. neither won the popular mindshare though.
of course.
ummm....
Absolutely. What is annoying is being told to get a Mac in order to do the smallest thing. No.
I could talk about Ogg if you like? ;-)
I can't tell the difference anyway - and I tried it on loads of different types of hi and lo fi.
Flibster's ears must be so sensitive that they are pricking up right now, knowing we are having this discussion without him! ;)
ah. grr
there comes an age where it's physically impossible to do so. eventually we get old and so does our hearing. i'm not sure what age that is, but i'm clearly way past it :)
I can tell the difference between MP3 and CD in my car on my new stereo. I'm not just going to have to re-encode the M4A's back to MP3, I've gotta do all the old MP3s I did years ago at 128 into a decent bitrate.
Can you? Wow! I honestly can't tell the difference as long as the quality is above OK...
FLAC is always going to be "better" as it's lossless, but for most people AAC or MP3 is "good enough". I listen to my iPod via both headphones (Sennheisers like yours, Mr C) and a fairly decent stereo system and I can't tell the difference between CD and iPod playback.
You know what... I've never been able to tell before I got that thing. I do like it.
btw I just tried to quote your email by clicking what you wrote. I'm not addicted.
it's worth noting that we used to create podcasts in both m4a and mp3 format, the extra hassle and cost of supporting both led us to standardise on mp3 for the time being.
i am ever hopeful that one-day everyone will support m4a's, but i'm not holding my breath.
Well that day may have passed today because when I went to fill up my bike tyre with the free compressed air pumps they have in town, the tyre literally exploded and it was such an almighty bang that it made my ears ring for a sec!
but as I say, many of my MP3s were ripped at 128 four or five years ago, my PC speakers aren't great so I never noticed anything wrong. put it through a better system and you notice the distortion.
When I got my Mac, I sat down with it and less than half an hour later I was seriously wondering why I had put up with Windows for so long.
I use Philips in-ear buds. Not too expensive (as I seem to destroy earphones at the moment) at 30 Euros but good passive noise cancelling, good bass and decent range so I'm very happy with them. I actually think they sound better than the Sennheiser Cans I had that broke after three months...
here's a test:
- find a cd you know well and a track on it you know well.
- purchase the equivalent song in mp3 format from amazon (only 69p).
- play both in the car and see if you can tell the difference.
Hmm I rip mine at 190 which makes a little difference - I also use a program called MP3Gain to reduce the volume limit to 89db so the iPod graphic equaliser works better without distortion...
Harry Shearer said on his radio show the other week that the studio engineer was apologising for the high-pitched whine coming through the speakers. He replied he was just glad he could still hear it (this coming just after he'd performed with Spinal Tap at Wembley Arena)
they did this a while back on the gadget show, they played mp3, cd and record aswell with pink floyd.
they guessed the mp3
A car is a bad test really. Home stereo is better. There's too much other noise in a car. Although I can see where you are coming from, as that is where we most listen to music probably.
Oops. You're not supposed to use those things for bikes and now you know why :D
i can believe it, but how old were the people?
:P :D
Suzi Perry + 2 other guys who must have been 30's
I would be asking what was the bit rate. I can tell the difference with probably 128K, and i'm old-ish
interesting. suzi is, mid-twenties?
they used the highest bit rate they could find for the mp3, i believe it was from 7 Digital
Well they are for bikes, that's the thing. It's just that I have a POS bike with a rear tyre that rotted away, so when I tried to fill it ... BANG!
39
add 20 and your there ;)
that's important too. amazon mp3's are 256kbps i believe.
We had a Mac at Mum's in the mid-90s. It was okay, nothing special. Frustrating because everyone else I knew had PCs so I couldn't do sod all. Not to mention the stupid idea in schools at the time to take Acorns.
My sister and my stepmum have Apple laptops and swear by them. I've said it several times. I'd take an Apple laptop and a Windows desktop.
ok, so about 15 ;)
oh. hmm, wonder if it differs for female hearing?
Eh??? She'd love you saying that to her ;)
will try that later in the week, may require reminding..
was it under normal conditions? or in a studio?
i really should just watch it :)
I changed to 192 about 2 years ago, they are better.
Correct, based on a sample of the tracks I have (all 10 of them).
oops. i haven't seen her for about 2 years mind you.
it was in a theatre, they had it very loud too i believe
I don't have a home stereo and the quality through the car system (at high enough volume) is the best I've had on anything I've owned.
the ones on said program were 320k
i wish they'd done a bedroom/livingroom/car test too.
Completely offtopic again from everyone but I just saw this and had to share the best exam question answer ever!
He even got it right!
I expect that they would have been able to guess which room they were in.
:D ;)
blast.
You know its bad when you start to work the answer out.
the whale truly is the correct answer
if you can do x^5 then im am incredibly impressed, tahts not even A2
You know your are going blind when you read 4 as a 5.
The strangest answer I ever had to mark was "don't forget to hook up to Boost Mobile!"
Still impressed!
I'm not working out the point lie inbetween bit.
Then it depends how you're working out the roots....factorising?
Night all - way too late for me, stupid internetless house making me stay up late when I come home.
One more day and then back to normal, so I can watch my programmes and write my blogs again :D
Night, sorry for the delay
Long division.
Night gavin
Night Gavin
NP mate ;)
aaahh right, still impressed, i still cant do long division
I would try and be clever here and show it, buut i can't be bothered
What on earth is an ‘opinion former’ ?
I dont understand what you are saying will happen, they will make it illegal to race cars? {Comment #301}
Probably the sorts of "green" organisations whose opinions are expressed in such magazines as New Internationalist. It did a feature about corporate reactions to climate change in late 2007 and the article's author labelled Honda's "Earth Dreams" project as the biggest load of greenwash he'd ever seen. Having a climate change sceptic in power is not going to convince them that motor sport is taking the environment particularly seriously - and in some places the "green" organisations are rather powerful.
I'm not convinced they'll manage to get racing banned in a significant enough amount of the world to damage F1's future, though some national racing in countries with particular "green" sensitivities could be affected (especially by limitations short of banning). Basically, the "green" lobby could protest and elect their way to wholesale legislative change in certain countries. Not the UK, where the prevailing political opinion is largely talk and little action, but I could imagine places like Iceland and perhaps some other countries with sensitive ecologies (I'm fairly sure I read that one of the Scandinavian countries had a major pro-green lobby, but I can't remember which off the top of my head).
It's Sweden - funnily enough the only Scandinavian country without any significant Oil resevres...
What i am trying to say though is, they have kept the wheels on effectivly in the past, have they been changed? {Comment #338}
The wheel tether minimum specifications are identical to last year. It may be that other regulation changes have increased the forces with which they must contend have increased.
I was thinking about 4-5 years ago, no changes you know of since then?
I was thinking about 4-5 years ago, no changes you know of since then? {Comment #909}
I don't think there have been. The tethers have been upgraded twice since their introduction; once to add a second wheel tether and again to increase the second tether's strength to 10,000N (the first tether has always been set to 5,000N). The calculation was that anything beyond that would be counter-productive safety-wise due to the risk to the survival cell getting a hole from a car corner being torn off.
The second of those changes happened in 2002. Until the survival cell can take a 15,000N tether, I suspect that will remain the case.
Biggger bolts?
