It seems to be a weekend of no news so far, which is on the one hand a bit of a relief, but on the other, makes the daily a little bit tricky. That means I have to fall back to Wikipedia for news, and apparently today is the day that the Mary Rose sank off the coast of Portsmouth in 1545. Now you know.

  • The only news I could find is that Heikki has been busy and after spending yesterday posing on a child's bike to promote a new clothing range, he is now in Moscow demonstrating for Team McLaren. No bikes in sight though, which will mean no repeat pictures like we saw yesterday.
  • It's all go on the wiki, as we've tidied up the section about this very site. There are quite often changes to the live commenting and tweaks to the site itself which you may or may not be aware of, so the page is there to keep you up to date. If you're having troubles, you can also submit bugs, and we're always open to suggestions for future features. Take a look and see what you think.
  • Whilst I was on the wiki, I also noticed the I Spy game, which must be about ready to start again, what with the shuttle being in space and all. Steven Roy has been giving us frequent (and awesome) updates about what is going on up there, but he seems to be missing out the fact that they're bound to be playing I Spy.

That'll do it for now, there will be a debrief streaming later on today assuming we can find something to talk about. Until then, I will see you in the comments.

Just watching the NASA post mission briefing. They are talking about some minor damage to the bottom of the shuttle during launch. Nothing unusual just the usual.

What I hadn't realised is that there are film cameras attached to the solid rocket boosters and when they are recovered from the sea the film is processed so that they can get a good look at the bottom of the shuttle.

Listening to the NASA briefing I havethe answer to there problems just as the shuttle comes to the end of its life. They have problem with foam and debris hitting the underside of the shuttle and damaging the thermal protection tiles at launch. They should fit a sumpguard to it covering the whole tiled area and jetison it after the external tank. I can't believe NASA never came up with that.

You should email them, sometimes people are too smart for their own good.

Also suggest moving to new mexico area. is higher, so less fuel to go up...

  • Pat W19/07/2009 at 00:09

In 2002 / 2003 I had a website called www.racing-stats.com which attempted to do the same thing. The design was there, it just needed data. I got bored. This guy... he's got so much stuff on there as to be unreal, and amazingly he's only had it online 2 years. It would take most of us three or four times as long to do this.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:11

You should email them, sometimes people are too smart for their own good.

I would but there are only something like 6 shuttle flights left so by the time they got something designed, approved, built and tested it would be too late.

  • Pat W19/07/2009 at 00:11

In fact I'm in email contact with the guy and he's telling me he entered one F1 season per DAY. That's insanely fast.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:12

I was scanning the mission press kit the other noght and they now have the space harbour in New Mexio as an AOA landing site.

They have never actually landed there but it has to be prefereable to continual problems they have in Florida. I can only see two problems. is it too far from the sea for them to jetison the solid rocket boosters after 2 minutes and would they be able to clear enough area to make them happy to launch?

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:17

no idea. thing is i press it assuming it'll work, and then realise after it's posted.

    Maybe

  • Pat W19/07/2009 at 00:40

Yeah, one stinking round and no F1 tommorrow. What a wasted weekend

Ah. 66 out and 66 home. What do you usually get? On our small but technical course (narrow with trees) I consider 130-135 to be my normal sort of score.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:40

Hello all, and can I say, I hate golf....hate it!

    No birdies today?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:41

    You might say, what's 66 + 66?

    66 is championship standard golf

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:41

    That'd be more like 25/2*3+4 +50

I made that up and it's pretty close to 66

    Whaddya know!

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:41

Pretty good for two rounds! Although I assume from your tone you only played one..

Let me explain further, it was a very exclusive course on Sanibel that they let Firefighters and Police play once a year. It's a PGA tour quality course. But from the tee there are mangroves about 100yds then the fairway. My drivers have been 150-200 of late, but low trajectory so the mangroves jumped up and caught a bunch of my shots. So it's not really my fault

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 00:42

I made that up and it's pretty close to 66

    91.5 is close to 66? :P

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:42

I scared some, if that counts

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:43

but low trajectory so the mangroves jumped up and caught a bunch of my shots. So it's not really my fault

Sounds to me like the course was cheating.

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:43

    In my world: YES :)

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:43

    Finally, someone who understands

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 00:43

Sounds to me like the course was cheating.

What would the stewards do? :D

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:43

It could have easily been 3086

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:43

but low trajectory so the mangroves jumped up and caught a bunch of my shots. So it's not really my fault

Maybe some reverse firefighting is in order before you go back next year?

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:44

Did all of that mean, you did a Piquet?

I did a huge Piquet...in fact I should have said that on the course, but none of my fellow players would have gotten it

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:44

I've ben away for a few days, is Max gone yet? ;)

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:45

I was wearing a Kimi Ferrari hat, so they should have ruled against the mangroves and given me credit for birdies on all failed shots

  • me19/07/2009 at 00:45

I've ben away for a few days, is Max gone yet? ;)

no. but you are going to monza with nick.

    Surely it beats nandofest?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:46

He has announced he is not standing and is backing Todt. Todt has been touring Africa trying to dredge up votes. His journey has been made more comfortable as he has the use of an FIA Challenger jet

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:47

    :D Are you wearing his 2009 gangsta-spec hat? :D

No it was a standard, 2007 non-gangsta hat

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:47

He isnt running for election, but todt is...

    I heard that

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:48

    :D Are you wearing his 2009 gangsta-spec hat? :D

Surely, a proppa gangsta would be wearing a 2010 spec cap by now?

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:49

next year, when he's driving for ferrari ;)

    boooo 2010 F1

    We need more recruits...

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:50

Brewers are beating the Reds 4-1

Brewers have always beaten me in the end ;)

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:50

Rays 1 Royas 1, come on Rays!

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:51

Brewers have always beaten me in the end ;)

Ah, but its only bottom of the fifth, 4 more innings still to go :P

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:51

Is it wrong that I became addicted to La Roux yesterday?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 00:51

Rays 1 Royas 1, come on Rays!

Yankees won after a rain break yesterday and won an early match today. I think I saw that Toronto beat Boston too.

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:52

Ah, but its only bottom of the fifth, 4 more innings still to go :P

I'm all about the marathon, not the sprint

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:52

Rays 1 Royas 1, come on Rays!

ESPN also telling me that the Mariners are winning...

To me this means the world series is their's to loose...

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:53

    hehe...

I always find when doing a marathon, the odd sprint once in a while livens things up...

    I call them tequila ;)

Yes, in about a week, I'll go to a "playschool course" and shoot much better

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 00:54

    I call them tequila ;)

Tequila is the liquid trampoline for me.

    :P

See you are not too drunk

I'm not sure I understand the concept of too drunk

Is that the same as: can't type anymore?

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:56

ah, but you save in the end, you can keep using the same shot all night...

    Fricken Yikes!

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 00:58

I'm not sure I understand the concept of too drunk

I agree, i was once told i was too drunk, so i replied (quite cleverly in my mind) That means that there must be an optimal drunkeness you want me too be... we will have to practice!

  • Pat W19/07/2009 at 00:58

Is it wrong that I became addicted to La Roux yesterday?

The 'bulletproof' song is okay when it comes on the radio. I'm not sure I'd actively choose to listen to it.

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 00:59

trust me, they're meant to go to monza together. i can see it now!

  • Joe in Fla19/07/2009 at 01:05

If you guys like beer, we should do a meet-up when F1 returns to Montreal. I was in beer heaven, and the Budweiser chicks didn't hurt. Or should I have said birds, or is not PC

I really don't get this guy. Says he will never be accused of cowardice but ran away the last time we had a discussion with him then says the numbers here are drearily small. Amazing how so few of us can upset him so much.

Kebabs... haven't had one in ages.

I heard a funny story tonight

Guy who used to drink with the son of a multi-kebab shop owner, would go out on the tear and end up back at one the shops. All the lads would be hungry and the father would say, "fellas, help yourselves - anything you want. Just stay away from the donner" :D

I really don't think it would be. You'd get a really arrogant man attempting to justify himself and getting ever more agitated with raised voices. I've only seen what he's posted here but I'm getting a vibe off him. I've dealt with the type before.

    Must remember Moto GP

Yup, later tonight. Yamaha really asserting themselves. If they play their cards right and keep Stoner out of contention, we could end up with a Yamaha duel for the title.

At least we know Yamaha is in safe hands if and when Rossi leaves MotoGP.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 02:11

At least we know Yamaha is in safe hands if and when Rossi leaves MotoGP.

Hopefully Yamaha will have more sense than Honda and make sure he wants to stay with them. If you ran one of the manufacturers in that championship you would give him whatever he wanted to stay.

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 02:14

Hopefully Yamaha will have more sense than Honda and make sure he wants to stay with them. If you ran one of the manufacturers in that championship you would give him whatever he wanted to stay.

Indeed - Lorenzo is a gem - they should not let him go. Given the constant rumors with Rossi, Yamaha should know that they must hang on to Lorenzo to cover all eventualities.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 02:22

Indeed - Lorenzo is a gem - they should not let him go. Given the constant rumors with Rossi, Yamaha should know that they must hang on to Lorenzo to cover all eventualities.

I am not sure how good Lorenzo is. A lot of riders have looked good as Rossi's team mate or before tha as Doohan's team mate but when they had to lead a team they failed. Alex Criville was almost as fast as Doohan and at the time Honda had two engines - the big bang and the screamer. Doohan kept switching and setting up his bike to suit one then Criville followed and was back on his pace again. Doohan eventually told the team that he was not prepared to do all the work only for Criville to put pressure on him in the races so he gave Criville the choice of the two engines and then left him behind.

Criville won the championship after Doohan had his accident but from the start of the next season when he was leading the team he was lost and the rest of his career went backwards.

It will be interesting to see if Lorenzo can improve next season.

Although it had (I think) sooty and sweep playing it which I can't really explain. Was one of those dreams where you tend to remember things but can't really explain what on earth was going on.

Good man! :D I found the handling rather stiff the first time I drove it, but I'm used to it now. I prefer it over Forza because, as my teammate in the RWS said to me last night testing for Pau tonight (:D !), the cars feel more weighted, which makes them feel that bit more realistic.

When you get a moment spare, maybe after my races tonight, I'd be more than happy to run a few laps with you to get up to speed. :)

If you told me that last night when they booked the tickets, that mighta worked.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 12:48

If I do that, then they are the sorta parents who would take me still.

Well if you are going anyway, you have nothing to lose,

I'm looking at getting myself a Logitech DriveFX wheel for the 360. Apparently it's a very good wheel, better then the official one from MS, and Amazon has it on their site from just £22.99! :D

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 12:58

The NASA press kit doesn't have much listed for today. There is a slot for a focused inspection of the shuttle thermal protection system if that is decided to be necessary after all the photos and film has been reviewed.

There is some robotic work with the transfer of a cargo container from the shuttle and there are preparations for tomorrow's spacewalk which ends with the two spacewalkers camping out in the airlock so that they can breathe the correct gasses.

Tell them Harry Potter is for kids and you are far too old for that although I guess since it is clear that it is them that want to see it in the first place you have no option but go.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 13:01

Just watched the Moto GP from Germany. Those super slo-mo cameras are even more incredible for bikes than they are for F1.

I know, but it'll only be a stopgap until it comes along, I guess. In fact, Natal hadn't even crossed my mind until you just mentioned it. Plus I can double it up as a PC sim racing wheel when it comes and as a spare when I decide to upgrade to a G25 or G27.

    Hi, everyone.

    yeah, that's really really bad.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 13:36

    yeah, that's really really bad.

That barrier that the first car hit should not be angled back like that. It looks like the only reason it is that way is because of a tree. Chop down the damn tree.

I hope Surtees got nothing in his eyes because the wheel impact lifted his visor. He still had his foot jammed on the throttle when the car stopped so I guess he was knocked out straight away.

  • me19/07/2009 at 13:36

is that what happens when you require race cars be built on such a tight budget, you skip the wheel tethers?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 13:39

is that what happens when you require race cars be built on such a tight budget, you skip the wheel tethers?

Nothing other than F1 has tethers. I have argued for years that we need proper head protection in single seater but too many people think that if you do that then you are going away from the ethos of the sport. Same when I suggest putting something in fronto of or behind the wheels to stop one car launching over another.

  • me19/07/2009 at 13:41

i thought nascar and irl did?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 13:43

    #sidepodspace update

They have started transfering stuff from the shuttle with the shuttle robotic arm. They have to hand the pallet from that arm to the stating arm. That should be interesting to watch. Hopefully they won't let go before the second arm has a good grip.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 13:44

Give them enclosed cockpits, the helmets are so big now you cant really see anything, other than from on boards.

...put a camera in the cockpit.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 13:45

i thought nascar and irl did?

I don't know anything about them. Given the speeds they do on ovals it would make sense for them to have them and for Le Mans prototypes too.

On the Surtees acident the thing that really bugs me is we still have barriers angled back towards the car for no better reason than there is a tree there. That is totally unacceptable and I am surprised Jonathan Palmer would allow such a thing on one of his circuits.

  • me19/07/2009 at 13:46

    agreed. it's absurd.

My argument has been that they should have dragster like head protection that goes right over the driver's head. Flibster mentioned a conversation he had with Gordon Murray and Murray's idea was for F1 to be full enclosed and similar to samller Le Mans prototypes.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 13:47

There appears to be a big slope behind that barrier.

I assume the barriers have to be a distance away from this. Moving the slope would be a massive job, probably cheaper to re profile the circuit

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 13:49

I remember DC discussing that (or was it someone else? but it was related to the DC/Wurz incident in AUS 07). He said that closing up the cockpit would go against F1's very nature of being an open-wheeler car, and that enclosing the driver doesn't necessarily solve matters.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 13:49

I used to have a book from the 70's, and on the last page it has an artists impression of what an f1 car would look like 25 years in the future.

It was a pretty close to an early 90's f1 car, but had an enclosed cockpit.

If they did that the drivers could see more as the cockpit sides wouldnt have to be so high

It is better to have the barrier closer and angled properly than have it further away and angled badly. When Greg Moore was killed in CART the barrier was a long way from where he lost control but the thing that killed him was the angle.

The car hit the barrier on it's side with his head facing towards it. At that speed, he has very little if not no chance :(

If the barrier had been angled correctly he would have slid along it. We have seen accidents like that survived before but the angle was 100% wrong and made the accident many times worse than it had to be.

    Beer you say!

Ace. Am curious about these Pedalo rumours, and I don't wanna trust you know who or Google translate if I can help it.

Isn't that Diario AS the famous GMM source.

Ace. Am curious about these Pedalo rumours, and I don't wanna trust you know who or Google translate if I can help it.

    It's long, I'll need time.. :-)

But in a nutshell, they say that De La Rosa is a Campos driver for next year and will be announced officially at Valencia

    I do!

    This year!

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 14:18

Have just done a translation on Babelfish. Apparently it's suggesting a Pedalo has signed a two year deal with Campos Meta, with Bruno Senna and Sergio Perez tipped as contenders for the second seat.

But they quote Pedro saying 'He is excited about it'. They don't say if he is excited about Campos reaching F1 or him driving for them, though...

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 14:20

Also his surname apparently translates as Of The Rose. So in English, his name is Pedro Of the Rose.

Red Bull are supposed to be chasing Merc engies next year and FIF1 have the partnership deal. I can't iagine Merc don't want to cash in on the Braw association either. Looks like it is turning into Formula Merc.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:30

    Davidson + Di Resta?

Di Resta has to be in F1 next year with someone. I would like to see him as Ant's team mate since Ant is so ridiculously over-rated that it would make Di Resta look good.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 14:30

Red Bull, Brawn, McLaren, FIF1. I count 4 teams there.

Who else can do the job. di Resta and Paffet are next on the list but they don't go to races.

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 14:31

But he is still 3rd driver.

The idea apparently that he test for them after the end of the Championship (anyway, Campos can't test before that, the testing ban works for them also). In that case would be like McLaren ending De La Rosa contract before the end of the year

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:32

But we've always said DTM is a career killer. What makes you think it won't be the same with Paul. I'm not at all writing him off as a bad driver. I'm just saying that maybe DTM wasn't the best career move for him to showcase his talents. Maybe WSR or GP2, yes but not tin-tops.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 14:32

Ant is good PR so has been more popular than his driving might deserve.

(Lou don't look - perhaps a bit like Jenson was perceived before this season)

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 14:34

Ant is good PR so has been more popular than his driving might deserve.

He also has done a ridiculus amount of testing so he might be good to help a team develop a car.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 14:39

ant wiped the floor with jenson when friday running was allowed.

Right... Let me make two things clear (sorry Lou)

    1) Jenson isn't a great driver

    2) Friday practice doesn't mean much - or is Nico the best driver in F1?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:40

I would rather he had followed the single seater route but some drivers have gone and done other things and got back into single seaters successfully. There was a kid called Schumacher and another called Frentzen that went asn raced sportscars for a while and did OK.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 14:41

True, but you could argue that back then sportscars were closer to F1 than touring cars. Remotely, of course.

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:42

    1) Jenson isn't a great driver

    2) Friday practice doesn't mean much - or is Nico the best driver in F1?

    a) i think he is. he did well at williams in his first year and then flav ruined him with talk of monaco and boats, but he put the highly rated (by some) jacques v. to shame and then some.

    b) friday running meant a little more back then.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:42

ant wiped the floor with jenson when friday running was allowed.

All the test drivers did. The race drivers had to make their cars last the weekend where the test drivers could go and hang it all out on a Friday. The race drivers were sorting the cars out and oreservibg them while the test drivers were effectively doing quali laps. Ant has never looked anything special as a race driver.

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 14:43

    Good afternoon! coming to monza?

BTW, aaaaaaahhhhhh I need to check this kind of things...

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:43

I would argue that sportscars are a lot closer to DTM cars than they are to F1.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 14:44

My point exactly. Sportscars always have been to some extent.

Friday running hasn't meant anything since Friday quali was scrapped

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:45

How many years were the test drivers allowed to run on Fridays?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:45

btw. gp2 cars have wheel tethers too, right?

    No idea

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:46

How many years were the test drivers allowed to run on Fridays?

can't remember, but i don't remember drivers having to make their cars last the whole weekend at that point. homologation hadn't come in, had it?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:48

can't remember, but i don't remember drivers having to make their cars last the whole weekend at that point. homologation hadn't come in, had it?

I am bit fuzzy about when all the various changes were made but I am sure the test drivers were workig their engines harder an had different tyre allocation to the race drivers. I can't remember the details but I know it wasn;t a straight fight. Besides there is no point in race drivers setting fastest laps on a Friday as Rosberg has proved.

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:49

btw. gp2 cars have wheel tethers too, right?

    No idea

so does f3 by the looks of it. apparently f2 does as well mind you. hmmm.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 14:49

    a) i think he is. he did well at williams in his first year and then flav ruined him with talk of monaco and boats, but he put the highly rated (by some) jacques v. to shame and then some.

    b) friday running meant a little more back then.

In my opinion. Jenson has some very strong skills. He is a very smooth driver. But imagine that there are five things (or 10 or whatever) that it takes to be a great Formula 1 driver. Being the number 1 in one area will get you in to Formula 1, but oddly to be great you don't need to be number one in any of them you need to be strong in lots of areas. Breadth is more important to F1 than strength in one area.

In that Williams he had a car that suited him, and he has it again. Still after all of these years he's relying on Rubens set-up work. I think he is really good at certain things, but I'm not sure he's the complete package. Any more than I'm convinced that Massa or Kimi are. And I really like Kimi.

I am separating what it is that I might like about a person like Jenson or Kimi and how they drive.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 14:50

so does f3 by the looks of it. apparently f2 does as well mind you. hmmm.

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:51

The F1 ones havent worked to well this year either...

they have. they're designed to break under massive load and they do.

  • Lukeh19/07/2009 at 14:51

Danica is saying she doesn't want to go down the path of f1. Perhaps a little bit more money would change that path ;)

She's not an f1 driver. She said 'at the end of the day' twice in two sentences there, something footballers do a lot. If she does change her mind she needs to get exercising some 'for sure' linguistic action.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:52

so does f3 by the looks of it. apparently f2 does as well mind you. hmmm.

I went back and watched the start of the accident a few times and the problem is the angle of the wall. You can hear the commentators reaction to the first hit. There are only a couple of bits including the wheel knocked off the car so most o the impact energy went into them so even with F1 type tethers the wheel would probably have come off. It is alls the angle of the wall that causes the wheel to go back on th track.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 14:52

they have. they're designed to break under massive load and they do.

Christine put it very well in the safety series. At the point that it would damage the car to hold on to the tyre it is designed to break.

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:53

I am separating what it is that I might like about a person like Jenson or Kimi and how they drive.

agreed. but against a former and rated ex world champ he pushed the guy out of the team. his own team, the team he set up.

that's even more significant than say heikki coming in and pushing out lewis. no?

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 14:54

agreed. but against a former and rated ex world champ he pushed the guy out of the team. his own team, the team he set up.

Perhaps... But... Without wanting to be too mean. JV won his season in a similar way to Jenson wining this season. The car is all.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 14:54

I am separating what it is that I might like about a person like Jenson or Kimi and how they drive.

That is not allowed. You just have to suggest that Ross Brawn may assist one driver an you will be told what a nice person Jenson is.

  • me19/07/2009 at 14:54

Perhaps... But... Without wanting to be too mean. JV won his season in a similar way to Jenson wining this season. The car is all.

It's a shame to see that Mr C and Steven didn't think this issue was covered well in the Safety Series ;)

You are wasting your time. If you check the safety series posts you will find that I left the first comment on most of them. I am soooo in the clear on this one.

In that Williams he had a car that suited him, and he has it again. Still after all of these years he’s relying on Rubens set-up work. I think he is really good at certain things, but I’m not sure he’s the complete package. Any more than I’m convinced that Massa or Kimi are. And I really like Kimi.

i don't think he solely relies on Rubens set-up work. I've read interviews with Rubens over the last 3 years (less so this year) where he has stated that Jenson's set up has helped him. Towards the end of last year i remember Jenson saying both him and Rubens would take parts of each others set up so as to try and achieve the best they could with the car. It looks to me as if they work more as a team and help each other out, rather than keeping the 2 sides of the garage very desperate. I'm not saying Jenson is the best driver ever and the best on a whole, am just sticking up for him ;)

I have a cunning plan. A number 2 doohickey that can sit there and sleep while the other one does the work. Maybe that makes it the number one since it will steal the glory in the end.

  • lou19/07/2009 at 15:13

Perhaps... But... Without wanting to be too mean. JV won his season in a similar way to Jenson wining this season. The car is all.

but.. but... (i think i've probably misunderstood) isn't formula 1 such that you need a decent car to keep scoring points and winning... you can't win a season if the car isn't fast enough. Jenson's not really had a great track record with brilliant cars so not really had a chance at it... of course the car is a massive part, but you can't lead the championship unless you are at least a half decent driver....

  • lou19/07/2009 at 15:14

    Sorry Lou!

Yes you need a decent car to win. Absolutely. But sometimes your car is so much better than everyone else's that nobody else has a chance. You have to keep doing great, and you have to beat your team-mate, but everyone elses options are limited.

Just like Jenson couldn't win last year, there wasn't a chance for him. However this year, and in JV's year, no other team had a chance.

Last year however three teams were close at the top.

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 15:18

Red Bull would beg to disagree.

Well yes. They are pushing hard. It may not be quite the same, but I would say that this year - as it was for Ferrari for many years too - it is Brawns to lose rather than for another teams to win.

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 15:20

Well yes. They are pushing hard. It may not be quite the same, but I would say that this year - as it was for Ferrari for many years too - it is Brawns to lose rather than for another teams to win.

okay, but who is to say that we wont have a closer season again, and the JB might be able to do well in that too?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:21

Red Bull would beg to disagree.

Red Bull has only been genuinely competitive in a few races. It remains to be seen if they can be considered to have been competitive overthe full season.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:21

okay, but who is to say that we wont have a closer season again, and the JB might be able to do well in that too?

    Me. I say that

Red Bull has only been genuinely competitive in a few races. It remains to be seen if they can be considered to have been competitive overthe full season.

They've been competitive in every race bar Malaysia and Monaco, actually. It's just that they were always second-best to Brawn.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 15:22

okay, but who is to say that we wont have a closer season again, and the JB might be able to do well in that too?

Nobody. My point is only that it's hard to say that he's amazing because he's either been in terrible or excellent cars both times with little comparative competition.

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 15:22

Well yes. They are pushing hard. It may not be quite the same, but I would say that this year - as it was for Ferrari for many years too - it is Brawns to lose rather than for another teams to win.

I think this year would end up being very similar to 2005. Alonso ran away whit the first races, Ferrari caught up in the second half of the year...

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 15:22

    Me. I say that

You say he will do well in that?

They have only been a threat to Brawn on a few occasions. They may have been second best a lot but in many cases there was a comfortable gap back to them

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:24

You say he will do well in that?

I was trying to stir it up and you go confuse me with questions

  • lou19/07/2009 at 15:25

    Heh :)

They have only been a threat to Brawn on a few occasions. They may have been second best a lot but in many cases there was a comfortable gap back to them

    wrong year... :-(

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:31

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Formula_One_season after 9 rounds of 19 in 2005 Alonso had 4 wins a second, a third and a fourth. Kimi had 3 wins and a third and an 8th. Schumacher had A win, 2 seconds, a fifth and 2 7ths

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:33

    For 2006 Alonso had 6 wins and 3 2nds. Schu had 2 wins, 4 2nds, a 5th and a 6th

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 15:35

What's the report on. We can do that

Its on mining yeilds and rights ownership on 3 mountains in china... fun?

    For 2006 Alonso had 6 wins and 3 2nds. Schu had 2 wins, 4 2nds, a 5th and a 6th

And from there Schumi started to win almost everything, and they arrived to Japan tied in points. That might well happen again...

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 15:36

And from there Schumi started to win almost everything, and they arrived to Japan tied in points. That might well happen again...

There's a difference - Mark Webber isn't going to be as helpful as Massa was.

And Ross Brawn is on the other side this time. ;)

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:36

I cannot believe how badly thought out the ISS is. One American astronaut on the radio to NASA: Frank is down in the Russian section so he can't talk to you just now. Or I could take a mesage.

The whole thing is not so big that someone can possibly out of reach.

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 15:36

And from there Schumi started to win almost everything, and they arrived to Japan tied in points. That might well happen again...

But yes, the scorecards then and now look rather similar.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:37

Its on mining yeilds and rights ownership on 3 mountains in china... fun?

We have never done that sort of subject before but we have done assignments on all sorts of things so should be easy.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 15:38

And from there Schumi started to win almost everything, and they arrived to Japan tied in points. That might well happen again...

It would make the season a lot more interesting if it turned into a battle between Button and Vettel

That's the funny thing, if RBR doesn't stop doing one-two, they don't have to chose a first driver (Alianora did the math :-) ).

I think the combination of Palmer's comment and the fact that they have not said he has regained consciousness is a very bad sign.

All those over achivers that became astronauts and non of them can do plumbing.

International Space Station flight controllers and crew members are troubleshooting a problem with the Waste and Hygiene Compartment (WHC), the toilet in the U.S. Destiny module. It is one of two toilet systems aboard the space station. Initial indications are that the liquid separator is flooded. The WHC was delivered to the station on STS-126 and installed later by the station crew.

While an inconvenience, this is not a serious issue. Temporarily, the six station crew members all will use the facilities in the Russian Zvezda module and the seven space shuttle Endeavour astronauts will use the shuttle facilities, the Waste Collection System, or WCS.

I was going to leave it like that and make myself look knowledgeable but I cheated. The tyres suggest 1967 to me so I checked Honda in wikipedia and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_RA300

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:25

hehehe thanks for giggles radio Alex :) made great listening :D

    we.might.have.forgotten.to.do.that

oops. during the four week break. promise.

You know that the bit where you recognised the tyres to the year does make you look SERIOUSLY knowledgeable!

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:26

They fell out, but they are friends again now...

    ahh, good.

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:26

*more of this. not for of this.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:26

To recover from the headbanging on Giggles Radio Katherine has just made me listen to Take That!

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 16:26

    very true.

I was going to leave it like that and make myself look knowledgeable but I cheated. The tyres suggest 1967 to me so I checked Honda in wikipedia and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_RA300

    Excellent, thanks!

  • Christine19/07/2009 at 16:26

    we.might.have.forgotten.to.do.that

I didn't forget but for once, it is something not really dependent on us!

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 16:27

You know that the bit where you recognised the tyres to the year does make you look SERIOUSLY knowledgeable!

Not really. That was when they started getting wide and they look like those used on the Lotus 49 which was Clark's last car and the first one to use a Cosworth. I wouldn't recognise tyres from most other years.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:27

I didn't forget but for once, it is something not really dependent on us!

Anyone could do what I did... for example... And that probably is the better way or you have to sit there pressing buttons all the time!

  • Journeyer19/07/2009 at 16:28

Not really. That was when they started getting wide and they look like those used on the Lotus 49 which was Clark's last car and the first one to use a Cosworth. I wouldn't recognise tyres from most other years.

That's still better than most of us, even me. :D

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:28

For a second I thought you meant "Four" of this... Eeek!

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 16:28

I'll see if I can work on something in the week, if not next Saturday for next Sunday :)

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 16:29

Not really. That was when they started getting wide and they look like those used on the Lotus 49 which was Clark's last car and the first one to use a Cosworth. I wouldn't recognise tyres from most other years.

christine's radio software will cue these things up, but the point you make about the lack of live comments could be an issue. maybe a mix of both?

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:30

I noticed that Lacuna Coil had some songs on the site while I was selecting my tracks. I couldn't really fit that much headbanging stuff on my show. But Lukeh might like something like that!

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:30

Having said that, now I leave to lunch. I'm preparing a few pictures from last year Paris autoshow, I'll let you know when they're up. See you

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:32

christine's radio software will cue these things up, but the point you make about the lack of live comments could be an issue. maybe a mix of both?

It's odd because I just realised that was a point I made on the video!

Yeah... It's a tough balance. I thought I should throw my hat into the ring. Especially as I get the benefit of the live audience the rest of the time.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:32

I thought of dancing to the music during the songs... But I felt that joke would really have only worked once!

You don't like his taste in music?

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 16:34

I was going to plan a skype conference call for my show to discuss various sim racing topics, but for obvious reasons I'm thinking against it. :P

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:34

have written sidepodradio into our wall diary on the 2nd august.

  • Christine19/07/2009 at 16:35

Only that I pretty much know every podsafe song inside out, having trawled the web for the past three years.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:35

    i just wish we'd have remembered before 5:30 on a sunday :(

Sorry I should have said earlier but I only remembered when I came back in at 3ish... I thought that if I mentioned it would create a mad panic :(

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 16:35

have written sidepodradio into our wall diary on the 2nd august.

I guess that makes you a tough audience. Maybe Alex should have put together his rap from yesterday's comments.

  • Alex Andronov19/07/2009 at 16:36

Only that I pretty much know every podsafe song inside out, having trawled the web for the past three years.

    YAY!

That said - Amy, we need to get down to work. :D

  • Amy19/07/2009 at 16:37

You are actually going to do sidepodradio?

I thought sidepodradio was a talked about thing not an actual radio show. I so don't have anything to contribute!

Wow, this project really is going to take off. Let's just hope we're not "ambitious but rubbish" like TG. Judging by Alex's initial effort, I think it can be done!

  • me19/07/2009 at 16:38

I thought sidepodradio was a talked about thing not an actual radio show. I so don't have anything to contribute!

it's real and it's going to happen. the only difference i think from what's already been said, is that it's a one-off thing, rather than every week.

just something to fill the summer break.

I love this NASA press conference. They have a broken toilet in the US section of the station so the 6 ISS crew members use the Russian toilet and the shuttle crew use the shuttle toilets. Now they have discovered that they can't do waste water dumps from the shuttle as it will affect experiments on the new porch so their are limiting the number of people who can use the shuttle toilet.

Another reminder that motorsport is dangerous. The saddest thing is that his father managed to survive the deadliest era of F1 only to have his son die racing in much safer conditions. :(

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 20:15

Those of you who have a really good memory will know that I have been tipping a young Northern Irish driver called Wayne Boyd as a future star. I saw hi in a Formula Ford race last year and he was incredible. He stepped up to F3 this season and his results have not been that great. Today he won his first F3 race in stunning style by the sounds of it.

The race started dry but became very wet and when a safety car came out while he was in tenth place. Autosport describes some of his overtaking moves as swashbuckling. In wet conditions in cars set up for the dry he was 1.5 seconds a lap faster than anyone.

    This boy is a star.

costs should never come before safety. The FIA have many strict safety procedures i can't see them allowing a series to run with an unsafe car.

I think (I hope) it was just a freak accident, tethered wheels can, and do come off, and the likelihood of a wheel landing on someone's head was minuscule it's just exceedingly unfortunate that the incident happened. Undoubtedly there will now be an in depth investigation (possibly several, after all this was in the UK) and hopefully, lessons will be learnt.

Exactly right. Anyone getting into a race car knows the risks and if they have the sense they sit and rationally consider whether they are prepared to take them.

costs should never come before safety. The FIA have many strict safety procedures i can't see them allowing a series to run with an unsafe car.

Costs have to come into it though. How safe do you make something before it is safe enough? There was a British F3 champion in the 80s called Jamie Spence and his 8 year old brother was killed in a kart race. I could make karting for kids effectively 100% safe but no-one could afford to buy and run the karts and the racing would be hopeless.

Safety is finite in any situation and there is always limited by cost.

  • Rich19/07/2009 at 20:35

Didn't this also happen at the Australian GP this year when Vettel and Kubica collided?

I think that was why Vettle and Red Bull got penalised - for continuing driving. Hopefully some more consideration of this sort of freak accident can be further reduced. I seemed to remember that last F1 accident was a also a wheel collecting a marshal - or am I mistaken?

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 20:35

    Hopefully, they'll be beefed up

I think there is not muche they could do to improve it. All the energy of the accident went into that wheel. Even with F1 tethers it was parting company with the car.

  • Jackie / saltire19/07/2009 at 20:35

It's actually on you-tube already would you believe

I just think it is all very fishy how we have had some awful accidents over the years and then suddenly a cheapo series is knocked together in record time and somebody dies...

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 20:36

But it will surely put back on the table the flying wheels problem.

It will be considered but if half a tonne of car hits a barrier at 100 mph at an angle and the wheel makes the major contact it is coming off regardless what you tie it on with.

  • Rachel19/07/2009 at 20:37

It was a freak accident, I believe it was Jack Clarke, he crashed, the energy went to the wheel, bounced across the track. It could have happend in any racing series at any time.

    Just unfortunate it happend today.

Its all about cost and whether you want to mitigate against highly likely scenarios (like this one) by spending more money!? I mean I am sure he would have survived if the cockpit design was different, its all about risk and how much they want to spend mitigating it....

Motor racing fatalities are not rare http://www.motorsportmemorial.org/query.php?db=ct&q=year&n=2009

  • guille230619/07/2009 at 20:40

I think there is not muche they could do to improve it. All the energy of the accident went into that wheel. Even with F1 tethers it was parting company with the car.

Well, there is an idea down here about how to deal with that. Some engineer in Argentina thinks that making the tyre losing pressure if it loses contact with the car can greatly reduce the speed and forces involved in the impact if it comes to hit something.

  • Rich19/07/2009 at 20:40

It was on not long after the crash, way before this announcement to be fair.

I am really not sure about the focus on accidents some people have - I like seeing great overtakes.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 20:41

Surely not the accident?Personally I think the poster should remove it.

Now that it is a fatal yes.

Well, there is an idea down here about how to deal with that. Some engineer in Argentina thinks that making the tyre losing pressure if it loses contact with the car can greatly reduce the speed and forces involved in the impact if it comes to hit something.

But off course, it won't make any difference if you are hitting the tyre...

It is just a bit of a shock because F1 has been comparatively safe since the sad accident of Senna.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 20:42

#RWS WTCC - Finished 2nd after managing to grab the lead into the first couple of corners. Managed to hold it (and everyone else up) for about 8-9 laps before I made one or two tiny mistakes and the SEATs got by. Still managed to fight back to 2nd place, which is still good but I know the win was there and it could have been more.

Next race is Brno, so for sure the Volvo will hopefully be on better form there. To be honest, I now hate Pau with a vengeance because it's so damn easy to get it wrong and mess up your race in an instant. From what I've tested the car is good on normal circuits so here's hoping I have an overall good race event.

I never said they were. But this series was championed by Max Mosley - ironically the safety crusader. I'm not blaming Max, but maybe if this series was gestated properly and not as a hurried pawn for Max and his cost cutting agenda, something could have been different today.

I love seeing accidents, but not those that involve serious injury or loss of life.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 20:43

Its all about cost and whether you want to mitigate against highly likely scenarios (like this one) by spending more money!? I mean I am sure he would have survived if the cockpit design was different, its all about risk and how much they want to spend mitigating it....

I was discussing in the comments earlier today how long I have argued for proper head protection in single seaters. It is the only part of the body that it is exposed.

  • Lynch19/07/2009 at 20:43

It was on youtube hours ago. We watched it when it was tweeted.

I watched the crash before it was confirmed, which weirdly lead me to watch "other" vids of Ronnie Peterson etc... (I just like knowing what happened, and only saw the original accident.. I am not morbid or anything!) May they all RIP ....

That was suggested after the Senna accident. I think the FIA looked at mechanisms to puncture tyres

It's like the years before Senna's crash. People started to believe that any accident was survivable.

I can't see any problems with the car. I am less than impressed with the angle of the barrier that Clarke hit as I said earlier. To me that is the major contributor.

I guess what I am saying is that to put up a video showing an accident where there was serious injury, or more particularly a fatal one on YouTube doesn't seem right to me. I was actually quite concerned when I saw Sutil's accident at Silverstone.

I hate the fact that there are fatal accidents on youtube. I can understand watching them to learn from them and that is what some of us did earlier. My interest in it was the original crash and the outcome of that rather than the Surtees crash which is simply a guy being hit on the head with a wheel.

Trouble is I don't believe that the majority of people are watching these accidents for anything other than the wrong reasons.

They won't be in trouble. There may be some changes made to the track but nothing major. To me they need to re-align the barrier and if it can't be moved back then it needs to be closer to the track.

High profile to us. It is not on TV with an audience in 100s of millions every two weeks or in every newspaper in the planet. Ask at work tomorrow how many people know about F2 or Henry Surtees. It won't make a ripple

Fair enough (but it's a moot point anyway because nobody at my work likes F1 ;) )

It will be interesting to see how Max reacts to this. We were all impressed by how fast F2 got off the ground. Perhaps it was too fast? I know this was a freak accident but surely the wheel tethers were designed to take a bigger impact than that?

  • Jon Waldock19/07/2009 at 21:02

There was absolutely nothing they could have done except make hte wheel teathers so the tyres dont come off the car at all and we've had the conversation before that they take the momentum from the wheels not stopping them moving at all. It could have happened in any series, it was a freak accident, no blame can be put on anyone for this.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 21:03

I think it will make the papers, with all the 'motorsport is getting safer' especially.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 21:04

Nothing in the headlines part. Will hold out for the sport section.

The wheel took the full impact. There were only one or two bits thrown from the car. The only dissipation of energy was the deformation of the car and the wheel coming off. I can't see any problem with the car beyond the fact that no single seater has good head protection.

  • me19/07/2009 at 21:04

just a quick curveball to throw into the conversation. christine's received an interesting email from a concerned fan.

the gist of the email essentially says - you're knocking a certain unnamed news agency without proof of their research processes and that's just not on.

it continues - it's dodgy territory if the offended person has made it clear he is interested in the discussions going on.

finally, a follow up email then suggests some media professionals are using spc to take shots at a certain unnamed news agency.

i'm paraphrasing of course, but clearly the concerned fan knows an awful lot about spc, and is very concerned for our well being.

    which is nice.

anyhow, thought you'd all be interested to know that there are so many lovely people watching our backs. we should probably get in touch with those media professionals and ask them to stop asap.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 21:06

Nothing in the headlines part. Will hold out for the sport section.

The only reason it will get any coverage is because his name is Surtees. If it was someone who was not conected to someone famous the coverage will be a fraction of what we do get.

  • Jon Waldock19/07/2009 at 21:06

Exactly, everything happened as it was supposed too, it was just really really really unfortunate that the wheel happened to bounce at that exact moment.

Certainly not a good start to the series. The fact that Henry was son of former world champion John Surtees will make it more sensational, as sadely, does the freak nature of the accident. I can still remember watching the accident that claimed Tom Pryce's life at Kyalami.

  • Jon Waldock19/07/2009 at 21:11

But do you not think after all the accidents we have had that wheel tethers could be made stronger?

We've had this conversation before, it depends on what the wheel teathers are for. I would agree that they should keep the wheels on the car, but that means there is more momentum again the monocoque, the wheel teathers are to dissipate the momentum from the wheels, but in bigger crashes (or smaller ones) like in Australia with Vettel (i think) it's clear they aren't meant to keep the wheels on the car.

  • Scott Woodwiss19/07/2009 at 21:12

anyhow, thought you'd all be interested to know that there are so many lovely people watching our backs. we should probably get in touch with those media professionals and ask them to stop asap.

Mr GMM has a mate? Or even a fan? Who would have thought it?

Since that person (I think I will call him Andrew) is reading this let me try and clarify a few things.

The reason we are not fans of GMM is because we noticed that most of the stories they published were rubbish. We did not see the name and decide it would be fun to slag them off. The rubbish came before the slagging.

Mr GMM then came here and told us that it was OK if 80% of his stories were rubbish because that meant that he could put out 20% that were accurate. I am sure Anfrew knows of the original thread and has read the comment where Mr GMM mentioned those figures.

This lead us to believe that we were correct originally and re-inforced our belief that any story attributed to GMM is worthless.

GMM frequently quote stories from Bild and Diario AS despite the fact that everyone knows that these are two of the worst three sources for F1 stories. I will leave Andrew to work out the third.

As a test of the accuracy of two of those three companies can Andrew tell us when they first reprorted that Alonso was going to Ferrari. According to Fernando himself those rumours have been around for 4 or 5 years and we know who has been spreading them.

If Andrew wants us and everyone else to have a higher opinion GMM I have a simple two stage strategy that would guarantee that would happen. 1. Before GMM report a story check with a reputable source to see if there is any truth in it. 2. Don't report stories from known bad sources or sources you have never heard of before.

I just find it very odd that my accuracy is many times higher than someone who is charging for news stories. Come to that my accuracy at forecasting what will happen in any situation is higher than GMM's accuracy at reporting events that have already happened or at least he claims have already happened.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 21:19

But I am only one person sitting in front of a computer with no connection to F1 and no paddock pass. How would that qualify me to charge people for second hand gossip of suspect veracity?

  • me19/07/2009 at 21:25

ITV are doing a thing on what the moon landing news would have been 40 years ago... awesome

is the answer high definition and widescreen? streamed via justin.tv?

  • Rich19/07/2009 at 21:26

If Andrew wants us and everyone else to have a higher opinion GMM I have a simple two stage strategy that would guarantee that would happen. 1. Before GMM report a story check with a reputable source to see if there is any truth in it. 2. Don't report stories from known bad sources or sources you have never heard of before.

In all honesty you can report something but always cite your source so other people can be the judge of the accuracy. Any article that sources any of the above I do treat with caution, but then I do the same with Jeremy Clarkson and what is on Top Gear. I still enjoy the programme even if it is not truthful.

  • Steven Roy19/07/2009 at 21:27

i'm paraphrasing of course, but clearly the concerned fan knows an awful lot about spc, and is very concerned for our well being.

Are you sure this isn't from Giggles?

  • Pat W19/07/2009 at 21:27

the gist of the email essentially says - you're knocking a certain unnamed news agency without proof of their research processes on that's just not on.

There is some element of truth, in that the heavy use of Google Translate is speculation..

finally, a follow up email then suggests some media professionals are using spc to take shots at a certain unnamed news agency.

That's interesting. I don't recall having seen anything of the sort, perhaps behind the scenes?

    which is nice.

    Very!

anyhow, thought you'd all be interested to know that there are so many lovely people watching our backs. we should probably get in touch with those media professionals and ask them to stop asap.

If you know who they are?

  • me19/07/2009 at 21:28

Its more like the news on this day in 1969, they just talked to patrick more about what he thought the astronauts would be getting ready to do over the next few hours

I believed after round 1 F2 was a good series. I believe it still is, sadly the death of Surtees will cast a shadow over it.

but the series is probably not to blame - it seems that such an accident could have happen in an open class autosport. It should not be stigmatised because of this.

  • Jon Waldock19/07/2009 at 21:29

It could happen in anything from Formula Ford to F1.

I feel that most drivers and parents of drivers do know the risks attached to many autosports and indeed other extreme sports. If the accident was preventable then it should be fully analysed - but freak events happen irrespective of what ever safety is in place - it is very sad these things do happen.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 21:40

I don't want to offend anyone here, especially Mr and Mrs C.

But i can see both sides of the argument here.

On the one hand Mr Mystery news agency see's their reporting method as being on the same model as is used in the mainstream news by some of the lower end agency's who fill English language newspapers with minimal staff all over the world.

On the other hand, this is F1, this isn't the real world, people do have access and these stories can be researched properly by people who have access. These stories seem to be primarily published online, which is completely unnecessary given that there are many websites written by journalists which have the ability to research these stories properly. Thirdly we as fans get incredibly frustrated having poorly sourced stories published with the same authority as those which are completely factual.

Perhaps this points to a bigger problem in the f1 journalistic community, there don't seem to be any freelance journalists who are successfully and broadly distributing their stories. This could be the problem with FIA requiring publications to be accredited rather than individual journalists.

I will confess to reading stories on an f1 site which uses such an agency, however i do so (hopefully) with the knowledge to know what is likely to be true and what is speculative. I fear others cant do this, and are essentially being misled.

I hope this hasnt annoyed anyone;) Sorry if it has

all we've ever asked is that you don't quote stories here without first checking with a reliable source. what we dislike is spending hours and hours debunking nonsensical stories which had no right to ever be published.

i suspect teams press officers feel the same.

I saw that. I thought N. Tech had already gone to the courts, it would strike me as more effective than any ECC action, since the ECC like to take their time over things (and by time I mean around about 10 years)

  • Jon Waldock19/07/2009 at 21:50

It's just occured to me that Henry Surtees was younger than me, in my year at school.

  • Nick19/07/2009 at 21:50

There is another element to this, There may be stories which the teams dont want to get out, and as such may trade exclusicve interviews with drivers e.t.c. for major news organisations to keep them quiet.

I would hope that this rarely happens. But from my limited time in the media i know it does.

Having said that though, 98% of the time you can judge a stories merits from where it is reported and where it isnt.

Not that I'm here... But most News Agencies have traditionally been the opposite of what is described. The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independednt and The Mail don't need to all send their reporters to such and such sporting event so Reuters or whoever send their chap and all the papers pay for the Reuters content.

This is the opposite. Nobody is sent, and this is just sourced from whatever anyone can find.

However, I must say, I only created Giggles Made-up Media as a joke. I didn't mean to upset anyone.

Yes but no-one can know how reliable any story truly is. There will be times when the said new sources will be right - if someone puts a comment with a source you have two choice - ignore as suspect or quickly review the link. The BBC itself has come for some issue about accuracy in recent times.

Accuracy is like safety. There is no 100%. The trouble is as I said in my earlier comment it was noticed that GMM articles were incredibly inaccurate lik Diario AS and Bild. Then Mr GMM came here and told us he does no quality checks at all.

Not long ago Jame Allen (one of your reliable sources) had an entire blog of why he thinks Fernando is going to Ferrari at some future point. Some of the "unreliable" have been saying the same thing - Fernando is of course denying this. It does not help in cases like the Bourdais story with STR saying it was rumour he was leaving only two days before he was axed and BBC saying his wife has confirmed it but LeSeb saying he was shocked when it happened. Ultimately this is a discussion area, being to restrictive could destroy its very purpose namely to discuss - every story is unlikely to be fully and truthfully stated because people have different perceptions and even agendas.

You just have to build up a picture of each source and unfortunately GMM's picture says they are massively inaccurate and the guy came here are tried to tell us why it was good that he put out inaccurate stories.

That is the point his mate / fan seems to be missing. Mr GMM came and said the majority of his stories were rubbish and he has done nothing since to improve that.

    hasn't harmed it thus far?

as far as i'm aware spc is one the only places on the f1 web where sensible, but heated, debate is still possible. and i don't make statements like that lightly.

the policy of encouraging the validation of sources has been in place for at least 12 months and so far as i can tell works well for us. or do you not see it that way?

  • Rich19/07/2009 at 22:21

Am still not taking a GMM story seriously, no matter how upset 'a fan' gets

I treat them as suspect - so usually avoid unless it appears elsewhere - unfortunately sites like PlanetF1 often take up a story from a source like GMM without giving the source and this adds validity. I still say you should provide a link to your source so each person can see the context.

  • Bassano 'The Godfather' Clapper19/07/2009 at 22:22

Allen believes in the Alonso-Ferrari story because his source (Pino Alievi) is very reliable when it comes to Ferrari news. Actually, he said that when he saw Pino talking about it as a fact, then he was convinced about it, not before. In the same way, I believe that story is likely to be true because of that source...

  • Rich19/07/2009 at 22:36

I think there's a big difference between saying: Look at this amazing news!! that then turns out to be nonsense, to for example what we did on the show today, which was unsubstantiated Pedalo news, but wouldn't it be interesting if that happened.

I know I raised this but I also said if you can believe the source - in other words is this likely to occur has anyone seen a better source to confirm?

Remember a Public Broadcaster is not under obligation to report factually even in a documentary - this came up with Channel 4 with the Great Global Climate Swindle - the swindle was they deliberately changed scientific consensus by selectively ignoring the most recent evidence and pedantic use of words. Their conclusions were blatant untruths but they could not actually be made accountable.

Yes, but actually nobody should be using blog pages to source material without doing some checks, it is inevitably going to be second-hand so there will be inevitable interpretations.

our motivation is solely to keep the conversations at a sensible and realistic level.

whether anyone believes the nonsensical stories makes no odds to me. all i care about is not having to spend hours talking about stuff that simply never happened.

He started the jogin craze in the 80s that popularised the idea of everyone trying to keep fit.

"You know that stuff they're selling now at the local shop, 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter'? Well, I can't believe it's not butter. Then yesterday, I went to Crookenden and I bought this other stuff, like a sort of home-brand, you know? And you know, I can't believe it's not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Well, you know I Can't Believe It's Not Butter? No no, I mean you know the stuff that I can't believe is not butter is called I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Well I can't believe the stuff that is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and I can't believe that both I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and the stuff that I can't believe is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter are both, in fact, not butter. And I believe they both might be butter, in a cunning disguise. And in fact there's a lot more butter around than we all thought there was."

    Unfortunatly, it isn’t the only motorsport death to occur this weekend, an Italian co-driver, Flavio Gugelmini, died in the ERC Rally of Bulgaria {Comment #870}

A really bad day for motor sport, then :( Condolences to the Gulgelmini family and the ERC.
