It seems to be a weekend of no news so far, which is on the one hand a bit of a relief, but on the other, makes the daily a little bit tricky. That means I have to fall back to Wikipedia for news, and apparently today is the day that the Mary Rose sank off the coast of Portsmouth in 1545. Now you know.
- The only news I could find is that Heikki has been busy and after spending yesterday posing on a child's bike to promote a new clothing range, he is now in Moscow demonstrating for Team McLaren. No bikes in sight though, which will mean no repeat pictures like we saw yesterday.
- It's all go on the wiki, as we've tidied up the section about this very site. There are quite often changes to the live commenting and tweaks to the site itself which you may or may not be aware of, so the page is there to keep you up to date. If you're having troubles, you can also submit bugs, and we're always open to suggestions for future features. Take a look and see what you think.
- Whilst I was on the wiki, I also noticed the I Spy game, which must be about ready to start again, what with the shuttle being in space and all. Steven Roy has been giving us frequent (and awesome) updates about what is going on up there, but he seems to be missing out the fact that they're bound to be playing I Spy.
That'll do it for now, there will be a debrief streaming later on today assuming we can find something to talk about. Until then, I will see you in the comments.
Might go to sleep soon so I can wake up at 10. Damn the reorganisation team of the speedway world cup.
Night RG
mmmm, sleeeeeeep
Night RG
I said soon. Not getting rid of me that easily
okay good and bad news... good news is that the first post on my blog is up :)
bad news is that the goodwood post i've been working on all evening is sadly not going to be up until tomorrow due to the fact mum is currently using the external hard drive that has my photos on it and i want to put a few photos with it ;)
:o

ahaha
I'm going to read it now.
have you taken tips from Steven Roy? lol
learn from the best ;)
Lou moderated my comment. I am shocked.
am still working out wordpress...gimme two secs..
my favourite thing is when it sends you an email to ask you to moderate a comment, then you click approve, and it sends you an email to tell you that you have a comment!! love it
heheh :) *checks emails* wow... yep you're right... lol
this comment, has to be on today's thread too:
just wow!
yay. go lou :)
I have been unmoderated. I feel free now.
haha ;)
Wow, awesome, stuff welcome to the blogoshpere!
Reminds me i need to blog, been too busy lately, will get on the elusive goodwood video soon too...
I still think *insert name's* Yuletide Blog would be an awesome name for anyone that doesnt have one!
NASA TV just announced the DIN plugs holding the porch are latched. Or in technical terms "Houston, we have a porch"
Hahaha
Please tell me they actually said that!
Right, im done for the evening. Night all
see ya jon
night jon.
See ya.
Nighty night
:P
night Jon.
loving this post.
I just saw that from your tweet, brilliant :D
They have been putting really good videos on their post lately, i love it
and I'm back in the room, and apparently a new thread.
eps 2 & 3 of Torchwood done and dusted
night to those leaving and well done on the nice Photoshop and blogging work everyone
Gonna follow Jon and hit the hay, early morning tomorrow. See ya beyond the blue Honda.
night RG (really loving that farewell surprisingly ;) )
No but the mission title is STS 127 - A porch in space.
Night Jon
I think I need to put it in the dictionary.
Good night RG. I am sure I said that 10 minutes ago
night rg.
i agree, you should ;)
just watching now.
The blue Honda stuff was started last night.
twas before last night wasn't it? (i swear i was around for it originally?)
It started the night of the quiz
sidepodtime is just confusing
I have subscribed to Lou's blog too.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/loublogsub-jpg
Just watching the NASA post mission briefing. They are talking about some minor damage to the bottom of the shuttle during launch. Nothing unusual just the usual.
What I hadn't realised is that there are film cameras attached to the solid rocket boosters and when they are recovered from the sea the film is processed so that they can get a good look at the bottom of the shuttle.
yay!! thank you!
is the latest post not in the feed?... or is it just the wordpress default one (which i thought i had deleted)
It was only just posted so it'll probably appear in a little while.
okay :D
i have the latest one only. must be a oogle caching thing.
I'm heading off so I'll see you guys tomorrow (no debrief means I have no pressure to get up after waking up late for the last 2 ;))
night all :)
debrief is at 6pm, how late you sleeping sir!
night Lukeh.
doh parade lap.
sleepy mind think sleepy things...
I thought there was gonna be a debrief? Change of plans, then?
Morning, everyone. :D Night, Lukeh.
As I thought. :D
Night Lukeh.
Oh there's a show? I probably won't be here either.
;)
goodnight.
Night Lukeh
Morning Journeyer. it is quite incredible a new person arrives just as another is leaving.
Do we know about Race Database?
http://www.race-database.com/
The SPC Comments: It never sleeps. :D
Night RG, Lukeh...
Morning Jumping Jazzy Journeyer
Jumping Jazzy? :D
News to me.
Impressive!
Listening to the NASA briefing I havethe answer to there problems just as the shuttle comes to the end of its life. They have problem with foam and debris hitting the underside of the shuttle and damaging the thermal protection tiles at launch. They should fit a sumpguard to it covering the whole tiled area and jetison it after the external tank. I can't believe NASA never came up with that.
Hi Journeyer
I am in a funny mood... i even said nighty night earlier! :P
Morning Journeyer.
Morning Steven, Pat, and Lou.
Nice blog, by the way, Lou. ;)
You should email them, sometimes people are too smart for their own good.
Also suggest moving to new mexico area. is higher, so less fuel to go up...
In 2002 / 2003 I had a website called www.racing-stats.com which attempted to do the same thing. The design was there, it just needed data. I got bored. This guy... he's got so much stuff on there as to be unreal, and amazingly he's only had it online 2 years. It would take most of us three or four times as long to do this.
I would but there are only something like 6 shuttle flights left so by the time they got something designed, approved, built and tested it would be too late.
In fact I'm in email contact with the guy and he's telling me he entered one F1 season per DAY. That's insanely fast.
I was scanning the mission press kit the other noght and they now have the space harbour in New Mexio as an AOA landing site.
That is a lot of hard work.
is it worth plugging on the show. i know nothing about this sort of thing, but we likes to recognise hard work.
I wonder if they will notice how much more stable the weather is there
that was a question btw. i have no question mark key.
It's going to be a good resource for someone. Whether that is Gavin and his stats or someone doing quiz questions.
Do you have an upside down question mark key?
Use a character map. :D
no idea. thing is i press it assuming it'll work, and then realise after it's posted.
As a reference it took me a week to do one race*, so yes, it is a huge amount of work.
* admittedly after work I was a bit tired and was distracted by newsgroup posts. clearly Sean has more time and dedication.
if i remember, i copy a previous mark. i keep forgetting.
There is FORIX with a lot of crossover info but I believe that is behind the Autosport paywall these days.
it is the wrong time to point to the preview button? ;)
:P
They have never actually landed there but it has to be prefereable to continual problems they have in Florida. I can only see two problems. is it too far from the sea for them to jetison the solid rocket boosters after 2 minutes and would they be able to clear enough area to make them happy to launch?
Ah, this sounds like a problem, have you tried hitting it extra hard to get it going again¿
shall add it to the notes.
i say "i", i mean christine.
yeeeouch.
yes. yes it is.
hehee :-)
okay.. i wont then ;)
When I do something like that you say use the preview button. :D
thanks ;)
next you'll suggest we need an edit comments function.
Publish and be damned. Never mind the consequences
okay, time for me to get some sleep, thanks so much for the lovely comments and views on my blog :) night all x
I was also just told about http://ultimateracinghistory.com/ of which the Drivers section is just mindblowing
Night Lou!
Night... blogity blog blog blog.
Night.
Night Lou
*waves to the drunk person from today's thread*
Awesome, thanks.
His name is Sean Wrona.
Hello all, and can I say, I hate golf....hate it!
Am doing my best, it may take some time ;)
:D
Hi Joe, tournament go wrong?
That's what happens when today's thread becomes yesterday's when you get home!
You might say, what's 66 + 66?
I can't imagine ANYONE saying that?
it means you been out drinking for far too long.
carole vorderman, maybe.
Pretty good for two rounds! Although I assume from your tone you only played one..
No, it means I wasn't out long enough if I get home and can still comment :)
Did I teach you nothing?
You mean my score outloud? It was not pretty, I am willing to own up to it
Yeah, one stinking round and no F1 tommorrow. What a wasted weekend
That'd be more like 25/2*3+4 +50
Maybe
Ah. 66 out and 66 home. What do you usually get? On our small but technical course (narrow with trees) I consider 130-135 to be my normal sort of score.
No birdies today?
66 is championship standard golf
I made that up and it's pretty close to 66
Whaddya know!
Let me explain further, it was a very exclusive course on Sanibel that they let Firefighters and Police play once a year. It's a PGA tour quality course. But from the tee there are mangroves about 100yds then the fairway. My drivers have been 150-200 of late, but low trajectory so the mangroves jumped up and caught a bunch of my shots. So it's not really my fault
91.5 is close to 66? :P
Did all of that mean, you did a Piquet?
I scared some, if that counts
Sounds to me like the course was cheating.
In my world: YES :)
Finally, someone who understands
What would the stewards do? :D
It could have easily been 3086
Maybe some reverse firefighting is in order before you go back next year?
I did a huge Piquet...in fact I should have said that on the course, but none of my fellow players would have gotten it
I've ben away for a few days, is Max gone yet? ;)
I was wearing a Kimi Ferrari hat, so they should have ruled against the mangroves and given me credit for birdies on all failed shots
no. but you are going to monza with nick.
He isnt running for election, but todt is...
Cool
:D Are you wearing his 2009 gangsta-spec hat? :D
Arent you coming?
Surely it beats nandofest?
He has announced he is not standing and is backing Todt. Todt has been touring Africa trying to dredge up votes. His journey has been made more comfortable as he has the use of an FIA Challenger jet
No it was a standard, 2007 non-gangsta hat
I heard that
Ari FTW!
I'm open to ideas, I just need to know what the score is
next year, when he's driving for ferrari ;)
Brewers are beating the Reds 4-1
Surely, a proppa gangsta would be wearing a 2010 spec cap by now?
boooo 2010 F1
We need more recruits...
Brewers have always beaten me in the end ;)
Rays 1 Royas 1, come on Rays!
Ah, but its only bottom of the fifth, 4 more innings still to go :P
Is it wrong that I became addicted to La Roux yesterday?
Yankees won after a rain break yesterday and won an early match today. I think I saw that Toronto beat Boston too.
I'm all about the marathon, not the sprint
ESPN also telling me that the Mariners are winning...
To me this means the world series is their's to loose...
The course didn't play to your strengths. I understand entirely. Happens all the time.
Let me be clear, this is the the one like rounders, not rugby ;)
hehe...
I always find when doing a marathon, the odd sprint once in a while livens things up...
I call them tequila ;)
*cough*
Well played sir
See you are not too drunk
Yep, big bat rounders :D
Yes, in about a week, I'll go to a "playschool course" and shoot much better
Tequila is the liquid trampoline for me.
Hits the bottom and comes right back up
Hah :-)
ah, but you save in the end, you can keep using the same shot all night...
:P
I'm not sure I understand the concept of too drunk
Is that the same as: can't type anymore?
Fricken Yikes!
the world is spinning and it gets really easy to fall over
So who's going to Monza with us?
Apparently, I may get you all drunk
:P
trust me, they're meant to go to monza together. i can see it now!
If you're that drunk, you should be asleep
:D :)
I agree, i was once told i was too drunk, so i replied (quite cleverly in my mind) That means that there must be an optimal drunkeness you want me too be... we will have to practice!
The 'bulletproof' song is okay when it comes on the radio. I'm not sure I'd actively choose to listen to it.
Is there a SPC meet up planed for Monza?
when you're that drunk you're too scared to go to sleep in case you don't come back
This will be good... But more people we need the sidepodhoard!
there is now!
Apparently so, I have just found out myself
I'll ask some questions and get back to you
I'm trying out the album now
It may just be the bulletproof hook
Will there be beer there? If so, I''m headed to travelocity.com
They may be a little scared now!
If there is no beer i am not going!
okay, report back
There's always BEER!
We need to get stephen involved so he can volunteer people!
I want to go if you'll pay me. But I'd have to leave before the shots started or I'll miss days.
I can no longer spell...
Steven!
You lost me at 'pay me' & 'have to leave'
If you guys like beer, we should do a meet-up when F1 returns to Montreal. I was in beer heaven, and the Budweiser chicks didn't hurt. Or should I have said birds, or is not PC
Don't talk about Montreal NOW
That was SO last week! :)
I would call them...
*oh wait i will be in trouble
...Ladies
Hm. If cheap flights and tickets can be arranged that would be good.
Did I just see a... sleeping panda?! :P
Budweiser? pah.
I believe Chicks is more acceptable but I wouldn't listen to me if I were you
At least it wasn't Fosters
Do they give out free beer?
If not they need duffman!
I'm sure you could choke it down while watching the Budweiser chicks....very cool
It's pretty good so far and I'm really surprised
Duffman! He's brilliant - speaks in the 3rd person too. :D
true
Perhaps. Depends if they are made of plastic and are painted up to look like Barbie dolls, 'cos that's not good.
I am a real sucker for their ads...Its their fault i am drinking beer in the first place!
:D
do they have feathers?
What do you mean by 'feathers' ;)
:P
Sorry about that
I need to stop now i am going hyper...
Night all...
I'm prefer to determine my beer selection based on how it tastes.
Night.
I decine to comment further on that subject, lest I end up on the naughty step again
[Otherwise known as the SPC 5th Ammendment]
Night, Nick.
not by opening an iphone app and doing as it suggests?
you have a lot to learn...
G'night Nick
See you at Monza
Apparently
I'm out here, See you guys
Woah, did we just get raided or something?
Night Joe.
:D
heheheh
Teenage years flashback
I think we're cool
I'm not sure what to say to that
Bye,,
I'd still say, No to Fosters
It's never steered me wrong so far
*Pray's mr c is in the mood for late night comment editing
christine has a more button now...
So, from the little I've seen lately
Giggles is now like Puff Daddy and controls half of the F1 News Media
Fair?
appears to have got the attention of certain people, yes.
What's a more button?
And it doesn't sound good anyway
[Walks towards the step now]
Short explanation?
Or just part of his worldwide domination plan
Dr Giggles?
*look down*
...
*a bit farther*
For the record, I'm more Gangsta than Giggles
:D
We're screwed!
:D
:D
Why? :-/
I just manipulate the posse from afar
I need a front man though
24hr naughty step
giggle's made up media, garnered this response.
:D
No escaping the long arm of Christine, then. ;)
Yeah, I was surprised to see those muppets raise their heads again
Too drunk is when you can taste carpet and think it would be fine with a bit of Branston pickle
I've popped in to see what was going on, just haven't had the time to comment
Did enjoy the Giggles Country show rap though
.. and can't reach the cupboard to get it
There is no-one here who needs to be voluntered for beer.
Wise words
Night Nick
Night Joe
that might be my favourite site subtitle yet.
Lightweights ;D
I really don't get this guy. Says he will never be accused of cowardice but ran away the last time we had a discussion with him then says the numbers here are drearily small. Amazing how so few of us can upset him so much.
Maybe that'd work on iTunes
:D
Scared of knowledgeable folk I reckon
I now have updated Firefox and the scissor clicks. Bet they are really loud when people are drunk and can't find the off switch.
:D
Turn the volume down and hide the kebabs
Kebabs... haven't had one in ages.
i love that "we ain't seen nothing yet". which was swiftly followed by, umm, nothing.
:D well, you did say no to his offer.
I heard a funny story tonight
Guy who used to drink with the son of a multi-kebab shop owner, would go out on the tear and end up back at one the shops. All the lads would be hungry and the father would say, "fellas, help yourselves - anything you want. Just stay away from the donner" :D
if he thought he'd get a red carpet, we can add delusional to the list too ;)
I'm guessing he didn't do his research first
Heheh :-)
I like the kofte one. Takes ages to cook it though because they expect everyone to order the donner
Any 'meat' that arrives in huge fake slabs can't be good.
I always stick to the chicken or lamb shish
It would be interesting to have a live debate with him but in the end it would almost certainly be pointless. I would like to have live audio of him describing the accuracy of his stories and his mothods and just point people at it.
:D
I think kofte is chicken. Its nicer anyway
He'd never dare go live, it's not nearly as linkable
Kofte is a long strip of meat on a skewer, shish is many chunks
I really don't think it would be. You'd get a really arrogant man attempting to justify himself and getting ever more agitated with raised voices. I've only seen what he's posted here but I'm getting a vibe off him. I've dealt with the type before.
Ah right. I had a chicken something last time that was nice. It may not have been nice sober, it was nice drunk :-)
Stay away from the donner and you'll be fine
Chilli sauce is optional
By any chance do the initials GMM stand for Genuine Made-up Malarkey?
The podcast I was listening to has ended, time I headed off I think. My turn for a poor round of golf tomorrow! :-)
It does mean missing the 'real' golf on the telly though. Must remember to set the DVR for the cricket and TdF highlights before I go, in case I'm not back.
No it isn't.
Is it not established that it's Giggles Made-up Media?
:D
night pat.
Giggles Made-up Media
Night Pat
So, about this going to Monza thing...
apparently the laptops running out of power.
shall bid y'all goodnight.
G'night Sir
Night Mr C
Good night, everyone. :D
Or is it just Mr C going?
I'm around, typing is getting tough but still here :D
:D I'm amazed you're hanging on at 3 AM.
Just Mr C
I actually stopped drinking when i left the pub
Out of character I know, but it's been a heavy weekend that started on Thursday
Must remember Moto GP
Yup, later tonight. Yamaha really asserting themselves. If they play their cards right and keep Stoner out of contention, we could end up with a Yamaha duel for the title.
At least we know Yamaha is in safe hands if and when Rossi leaves MotoGP.
Hopefully Yamaha will have more sense than Honda and make sure he wants to stay with them. If you ran one of the manufacturers in that championship you would give him whatever he wanted to stay.
Indeed - Lorenzo is a gem - they should not let him go. Given the constant rumors with Rossi, Yamaha should know that they must hang on to Lorenzo to cover all eventualities.
I am not sure how good Lorenzo is. A lot of riders have looked good as Rossi's team mate or before tha as Doohan's team mate but when they had to lead a team they failed. Alex Criville was almost as fast as Doohan and at the time Honda had two engines - the big bang and the screamer. Doohan kept switching and setting up his bike to suit one then Criville followed and was back on his pace again. Doohan eventually told the team that he was not prepared to do all the work only for Criville to put pressure on him in the races so he gave Criville the choice of the two engines and then left him behind.
Criville won the championship after Doohan had his accident but from the start of the next season when he was leading the team he was lost and the rest of his career went backwards.
It will be interesting to see if Lorenzo can improve next season.
Time I was in bed. Goodnight to anyone who is still around.
That rings a bit of a bell, it was the last Parade Lap. My memory of that PL is a little hazy after all it was 3AM here:D
turns out the best part of hosting a dinner party is that i get to have sticky date pudding for breakfast the next day
Good morning, up ridiculously early but in truth, I am up. Grr.
Good Morning... By the way the live commenting from the ride was your idea. I think you told me to do this a couple of months ago but I didn't see the comment until I got home. So this time I didn't want to miss my chance.
It was yes!
What? I did?
Yeeeessss... But I'm not sure I can remember when... Hmmm...
Me neither.
Morning all.
quiet round these here parts today, no?
Hello!
My Sunday has been spent eating cupcakes while playing Monopoly and Uno with Zoe's family. I've had a great day and am now chilling on the lounge. I hope you have a fantastic Sunday :-)
Early morning speedway makes me think its night time. My body clock is all lost.
Was it's Lukeh's F1 Monopoly?
I've started my journey home: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/p1010585-jpg
and now I'm waiting for my next bus.
bus has arrived talk. Bye
*waves*
Morning all :D
Is it sad that I worked on that so much last night it actually appeared in my dreams?
Although it had (I think) sooty and sweep playing it which I can't really explain. Was one of those dreams where you tend to remember things but can't really explain what on earth was going on.
I hadn't seen that - it's awesome! We played 'World" Monopoly. It will always be Mayfair and Park Lane to me...
Hey guys :)
Morning Scott.
Predictably picked up Race pro again yesterday, I forgot how absolutely spot on you have to be with the braking and whatnot on professional but you were definitly right about not giving the game a chance first time out. Although I'm still rubbish :D
Morning everyone, Some Pikes peak Footage to enjoy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adPMhXz2PBc
Everyone having a smashing Sunday?
Good man! :D I found the handling rather stiff the first time I drove it, but I'm used to it now. I prefer it over Forza because, as my teammate in the RWS said to me last night testing for Pau tonight (:D !), the cars feel more weighted, which makes them feel that bit more realistic.
When you get a moment spare, maybe after my races tonight, I'd be more than happy to run a few laps with you to get up to speed. :)
Also picked up Clarkson's new book "For Crying Out Loud!" in Waitrose. Read a small bit on his article on mobile phones, hilarious :D
New Bruno Mantovani cartoon. Loving the Piquet/Twitter reference! :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_mrKDGdXmg
Wow, that Fiesta is awesome! :D
Hahah, that bit was fantastic with Piquet.
An F1 reference I spotted in Waitrose:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-134
I for one welcome cherry KERS. Although i'm sure blackcurrant KERS will be the one to look out
hasn't that been out for ages?
Rain ruins the best of moments.
Did ya buy it? Did it give 6 seconds of powerful flavour?
No we didn't, but now that you mention it we should have. :P
But if we did, the extra weight probably wouldn't have done any favours. Plus we'd probably have had to rearrange the shopping just to fit it in. ;)
:D
This moto gp track is insane... 85% of the lap the bike is on its side!
I'm gonna miss the start, darn. This still goes on iPlayer doesn't it?
I think so
@airport: Baggage drop closes in 15 Min, a queue of about 25Min ahead of me. I'm wondering how urgent I need my underwear.
everything stopped again. This doesn't look good
good luck! I hate the logistics involved at airports.
Get dramatic... Start crying/shouting!
3 Min and 8 people left
surely if you're already in the queue they'll be nice?
MADE IT. Now security. No queue for this one
well done!
Moto GP make you register for live timing... booo them
So did F1.com? where's the drama?
I didnt on f1.com, when it asked me to register i just clicked the 'open in large window' and it opened, i bookmarked that and i havent registered.
ooh lucky you. I quite often go to it and it seems to have forgotten who I am and have to get them to resend my password, since you can't set your own and its always something like adsfauosidfuaoidsr. Boo.
I used my dads laptop when i was away a few weeks ago, i think it was turkey, he defiantly hasnt registered for it.
Im pretty sure it asks you for it but it isnt necessary to open a seperate window
I just realised it's 10.35 pm and I had planned to spend my day transcribing. Where did my day go? GIVE IT BACK.
I think you used it up last night?
hmm, possibly. That may be why I woke up at 2pm. That's still 8.5 hours of unexplained lost day though.
Weekends really should be three days long.
:(
Have to go and miss the rest of the speedway to see Harry Potter. Also just realised it is 2 and a half hours long, may take portable tv. 2 and a half hours of rubbish, I may die of boredom.
That is a very good idea...
Moto GP was a-maze-ing
Why do you have to go?
Parents dragging me by the ankles while I cling to the door frame sorta situation.
I set my own when I first signed up? Things must have changed.
Well... swear at them, slam a few doors and yell 'YOU JUST DONT UNDERSTAND'
Its page 1 of the teenage guidebook
If I do that, then they are the sorta parents who would take me still.
Tell them they are wasting their money on something you won't enjoy and it's not good to do that in this economy.
If you told me that last night when they booked the tickets, that mighta worked.
Well if you are going anyway, you have nothing to lose,
they will probably think twice about dragging you along in the future...
Me? ...A bad influence....
Afternoon world
Howdey... Are nasa doing anything today or do they rest on the sabbeth?
There is no religion in space. They are doing stuff every day except Saturday which will be a rest day.
laptop + mp3 player...transcript?
hehehe, in my world... harry potter is more fun!
I'm looking at getting myself a Logitech DriveFX wheel for the 360. Apparently it's a very good wheel, better then the official one from MS, and Amazon has it on their site from just £22.99! :D
The NASA press kit doesn't have much listed for today. There is a slot for a focused inspection of the shuttle thermal protection system if that is decided to be necessary after all the photos and film has been reviewed.
There is some robotic work with the transfer of a cargo container from the shuttle and there are preparations for tomorrow's spacewalk which ends with the two spacewalkers camping out in the airlock so that they can breathe the correct gasses.
haven you seen Natal... actual peripherals are so last decade!
Tell them Harry Potter is for kids and you are far too old for that although I guess since it is clear that it is them that want to see it in the first place you have no option but go.
Just watched the Moto GP from Germany. Those super slo-mo cameras are even more incredible for bikes than they are for F1.
I know, but it'll only be a stopgap until it comes along, I guess. In fact, Natal hadn't even crossed my mind until you just mentioned it. Plus I can double it up as a PC sim racing wheel when it comes and as a spare when I decide to upgrade to a G25 or G27.
I'd just feel wierd racing with just my hands holding nothing though...
I was joking, Natal isnt going to be any good for racing games... your arms would die holding nothing! :D
Yeah, I know what you mean. How would Natal match up where your hands and feet were in relation to the pedals?
Hehehe.
It's impressive technology but for stuff like that I think it just would be useless. I wuv my trigger buttons. :P
That is very tempting, its a pound cheaper on the ps3!
I was testing with my RWS teammate at Pau last night and he uses a wheel. On stock settings I managed a 1'22.0 or something and he got a 1'20.7. Go figure.
He did say it was Logitech so I've a feeling is the exact same wheel I'm after.
Wah!
He's a very quick driver. He's leading the RWS standings right now in the Prawn GP Volvo S60 :D
You don't need live timing for Moto GP. They have actual racing instead.
Here's the wheel I'm after:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-DriveFX-Racing-Wheel-Xbox/dp/B000GLL1LU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1248007915&sr=8-3
Yeah it was great at the front, but they rarely let you know about whats going on with toseland further back
Heheheheheeeeee :D
http://mantovani.zip.net/images/barrichello_moonwalker.jpg
Hah! Such a shame we didn't get to see that happen...
Love the megadrive game reference he's made it from :D
I really couldn't care less about them if the action at the front is good. Although i noticed the Finnish guy disappeared from 8th place about haf way through and I have no idea where he finished. Sorry Amy and Kathi.
I think from now on when supporting him we need to say "Cha'mone, Rubens!" ;)
how awesome is live commenting from the airport?
Ah, Mr.C. Good to see you make an appearance today :)
Finnish Moto GP guy finished 14th. Not good.
Mika Kallio?
anyone watching the F2 in which there was apparently a big crash?
the more button is inhibiting my productivity. it's too easy to catch up with missed comments.
That's him
Forgot about it again.
Max Probably was, dont know how many other takers there are for it
Is it on YT yet?
sounds like Nelson was, hes the one who tweeted about the crash.
Looks like Damon wants to play hardball with Bernie. Must be an Ari fan
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77070
Bernie is now 96 hours into the 48 he was going to have sorted out F1 in.
he needs to chop chop and get that thing signed, I only have until August 9 to book my tickets for next year
The accident was on lap 2 and involved Sebastian Hohental and German Sanchez
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77071
Henry Surtess got taken to hospital from it as far as I know with a head injury, or so I got told on messenger..
Uploaded literally 5 minutes ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTDiYS1NVW4
Doesn't look so terrible to me.
I think it's safe to buy tickets whatever happens - they'll be racing either as F1 or GP1. The question is - are they selling already?
Hi, everyone.
Then on the restart Surtees was hit on th head with a wheel and had an accident too
yep, I posted all my options early this morning. If it's GP1 they won't be coming to Melbourne though.
Sounds like the Surtees one is the serious one.
Nelsons tweet says "Beat ugly in F2. A car hit a wheel flew and hit the head of another pilot who was at the bottom of Fr. Q I hope the guy is good."
Ahh Google translate.
Watching the YT video again, I just saw that wheel hit the guy on the head!
yeah, that's really really bad.
That barrier that the first car hit should not be angled back like that. It looks like the only reason it is that way is because of a tree. Chop down the damn tree.
I hope Surtees got nothing in his eyes because the wheel impact lifted his visor. He still had his foot jammed on the throttle when the car stopped so I guess he was knocked out straight away.
is that what happens when you require race cars be built on such a tight budget, you skip the wheel tethers?
autosport have just posted http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77073 i hope when theres an update its good news
At least the marshalls were quick to get to him. They appeared at his car the second it stopped moving.
Nothing other than F1 has tethers. I have argued for years that we need proper head protection in single seater but too many people think that if you do that then you are going away from the ethos of the sport. Same when I suggest putting something in fronto of or behind the wheels to stop one car launching over another.
i thought nascar and irl did?
#sidepodspace update
They have started transfering stuff from the shuttle with the shuttle robotic arm. They have to hand the pallet from that arm to the stating arm. That should be interesting to watch. Hopefully they won't let go before the second arm has a good grip.
Give them enclosed cockpits, the helmets are so big now you cant really see anything, other than from on boards.
...put a camera in the cockpit.
I don't know anything about them. Given the speeds they do on ovals it would make sense for them to have them and for Le Mans prototypes too.
On the Surtees acident the thing that really bugs me is we still have barriers angled back towards the car for no better reason than there is a tree there. That is totally unacceptable and I am surprised Jonathan Palmer would allow such a thing on one of his circuits.
agreed. it's absurd.
My argument has been that they should have dragster like head protection that goes right over the driver's head. Flibster mentioned a conversation he had with Gordon Murray and Murray's idea was for F1 to be full enclosed and similar to samller Le Mans prototypes.
There appears to be a big slope behind that barrier.
I assume the barriers have to be a distance away from this. Moving the slope would be a massive job, probably cheaper to re profile the circuit
I remember DC discussing that (or was it someone else? but it was related to the DC/Wurz incident in AUS 07). He said that closing up the cockpit would go against F1's very nature of being an open-wheeler car, and that enclosing the driver doesn't necessarily solve matters.
I used to have a book from the 70's, and on the last page it has an artists impression of what an f1 car would look like 25 years in the future.
It was a pretty close to an early 90's f1 car, but had an enclosed cockpit.
If they did that the drivers could see more as the cockpit sides wouldnt have to be so high
It is better to have the barrier closer and angled properly than have it further away and angled badly. When Greg Moore was killed in CART the barrier was a long way from where he lost control but the thing that killed him was the angle.
The car hit the barrier on it's side with his head facing towards it. At that speed, he has very little if not no chance :(
If the barrier had been angled correctly he would have slid along it. We have seen accidents like that survived before but the angle was 100% wrong and made the accident many times worse than it had to be.
There was a guy who had a similarly terrible accident that same race weekend, yet he survived it, IIRC.
Don't remember that.
I just booked flights home for Christmas on a whim. Yaaaaaay.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyH6BnrQ7ZQ
Ok it wasn't as terrible but it was in the exact same place as Moore's accident.
You are going home twice in the same year?
I just made a reservation for an iPhone 3GS on a whim. Yaaaaaay.
He got lucky because both wheels hit at exactly the same time.
I now feel the pressure to do something whimsical...
Go to Monza?
Great Idea...
Anyone else?
Guess what? the plane had a problem. I am still here.
The paddock club is a right Bargain
Your link went missing, but I can see it when you quote it.
My parents really need to move to a place that doesn't require two stop overs to get back to Melborne. The odd thing is that on the way there I can fly direct.
Typical.
Werent you the one that moved? :P
The Link Button is a confusing beast!
This is turning into a nightmare journey, isn't it?
shhhhh
I like that below the Paddock Club there is a fans club. Can't have fans in the Paddock Club
Did you get to take off?
Before they move make sure that you can get a flight tothe new place from Helsinki
Does anyone speak Spanish?
At the moment I am still more amused than annoyed. :)
The worst thing is that my parents are picking me up and now they have to wait as well.
Amy is practically an expert
hi all, just in time. I do, why?
:)
So long a it is somthing that doesn't need them to fly in an expert it shouldn't be too bad.
no (but that is no in spanish)
good point. I draw the line at 3 different airports.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/intin-jpg
Hola by the way :)
Ace. Am curious about these Pedalo rumours, and I don't wanna trust you know who or Google translate if I can help it.
If the news has taught me anything, it's always make sure there is an aircraft engineer flying on the same flight.
A few people had been in the plane already and they were brought back. But not me. me being lazy saved me again :)
Good afternoon! coming to monza?
eh? Um... When?
For the grand prix... Its a sidepodadventure.
Apparently there may be beer involved
is it on the wiki?
This year or next?
Beer you say!
Isn't that Diario AS the famous GMM source.
It's long, I'll need time.. :-)
But in a nutshell, they say that De La Rosa is a Campos driver for next year and will be announced officially at Valencia
I do!
This year!
YAY!
I thought he was some sort of Megafunk Dj
Do they have sources for that?
Are we now at the stage where anything that isn't on the wiki doesn't really exist?
It is. I found the GMM story, went to the source, and am trying to find out where it falls on the scale of truth.
as I do my seat request I notice one leg is on a creepy small plane. I do not like those.
Wiki or it didn't happen.
Only 'AS have come to know... bla bla bla'
I#m supposed to go to the gate now. Talk to you in about 4 hours from home, hopefully
I shall have to consult...
Well it hasnt happened yet :P
I think I am at this stage :)
Bassano may also be involved. this is just a seed of an idea at the moment though
All the famous people know you. Can'tyou use your contacts to just call pedalo?
Have just done a translation on Babelfish. Apparently it's suggesting a Pedalo has signed a two year deal with Campos Meta, with Bruno Senna and Sergio Perez tipped as contenders for the second seat.
But the Asian trip that hasn't happened is on the wiki...
with two trips to NZ in 3 months I think I now need to cancel my Malaysian plans and pull out of the sidepodcast meetup ;)
But they quote Pedro saying 'He is excited about it'. They don't say if he is excited about Campos reaching F1 or him driving for them, though...
Also his surname apparently translates as Of The Rose. So in English, his name is Pedro Of the Rose.
Yea, but see, that would be journalism and I do not want to do that.
For some reason it sounds funnier in English than in Spanish!
Lets start some wild GMM like speculation over who the new McLaren test driver will be.
Heikki?
(sorry Amy)
Heikki?
#sorryamy
No way! :D How did that happen?!
The last bit of info than can be extracted is that apparently Campos has reached an accord with McLaren to let them test and develop the new car before the end of the year
Claire Kovaleinen announces test driver role on Twitter
hahaha... i thought the same and didnt dare post it!
I kind of walked right into that one didn't I. I blame the fact its after midnight.
Scott and I are in big trouble ;)
Awww :)
ahh, so campos may be the prodrive b-team that didn't happen, and isn't forceindia?
that girl doesn't deserve the name, what with all the flirting with fake nelson. Where is her loyalty?
:D
If you want to start a proper rumour say Danica or Marco Andretti
She threw it up. We had to hit it ;) :D
Is Campos Spanish?
But is using Cosworth engines.
Yes
'Tis indeed.
I was thinking last night...
...Davidson to Manor?
until max leaves, or forever?
sorry, just missed a few words in the translation :-)
'to let them use Pedro to test and develop' etc.
And this is hoe GMM stories are born...
touche!
I think his ideal drive is BBC radio. It's the best place for his talents.
gotya. but why not send him on gardening leave for a couple of months first?
Davidson + Di Resta?
Or has DTM shattered his career already? Didn't do Albers any favours, let's be honest.
Maybe he doesnt like 'outside'?
Red Bull are supposed to be chasing Merc engies next year and FIF1 have the partnership deal. I can't iagine Merc don't want to cash in on the Braw association either. Looks like it is turning into Formula Merc.
It's not like he is driving the current McLaren.
But he is still 3rd driver.
I think they are only allowed 4 teams from next year
Di Resta has to be in F1 next year with someone. I would like to see him as Ant's team mate since Ant is so ridiculously over-rated that it would make Di Resta look good.
Red Bull, Brawn, McLaren, FIF1. I count 4 teams there.
I meant they couldnt do campos if they do Red Bull and keep the other 2 ;)
Who else can do the job. di Resta and Paffet are next on the list but they don't go to races.
The idea apparently that he test for them after the end of the Championship (anyway, Campos can't test before that, the testing ban works for them also). In that case would be like McLaren ending De La Rosa contract before the end of the year
The shuttle payload bay looks so empty now
But we've always said DTM is a career killer. What makes you think it won't be the same with Paul. I'm not at all writing him off as a bad driver. I'm just saying that maybe DTM wasn't the best career move for him to showcase his talents. Maybe WSR or GP2, yes but not tin-tops.
Ant is good PR so has been more popular than his driving might deserve.
(Lou don't look - perhaps a bit like Jenson was perceived before this season)
He also has done a ridiculus amount of testing so he might be good to help a team develop a car.
If he doesnt get a drive next year i think he might head to IRL if he can get a drive there
ant wiped the floor with jenson when friday running was allowed.
Right... Let me make two things clear (sorry Lou)
1) Jenson isn't a great driver
2) Friday practice doesn't mean much - or is Nico the best driver in F1?
I would rather he had followed the single seater route but some drivers have gone and done other things and got back into single seaters successfully. There was a kid called Schumacher and another called Frentzen that went asn raced sportscars for a while and did OK.
True, but you could argue that back then sportscars were closer to F1 than touring cars. Remotely, of course.
a) i think he is. he did well at williams in his first year and then flav ruined him with talk of monaco and boats, but he put the highly rated (by some) jacques v. to shame and then some.
b) friday running meant a little more back then.
All the test drivers did. The race drivers had to make their cars last the weekend where the test drivers could go and hang it all out on a Friday. The race drivers were sorting the cars out and oreservibg them while the test drivers were effectively doing quali laps. Ant has never looked anything special as a race driver.
BTW, aaaaaaahhhhhh I need to check this kind of things...
I'm going to Europe in September, I've just booked my flights last week, and I just realise that I'm arriving the 12 to Hamburg! Missed opportunity...
I would argue that sportscars are a lot closer to DTM cars than they are to F1.
are we talking about the same year?
My point exactly. Sportscars always have been to some extent.
btw. gp2 cars have wheel tethers too, right?
going back to a previous conversation...
Friday running hasn't meant anything since Friday quali was scrapped
How many years were the test drivers allowed to run on Fridays?
No idea
can't remember, but i don't remember drivers having to make their cars last the whole weekend at that point. homologation hadn't come in, had it?
I am bit fuzzy about when all the various changes were made but I am sure the test drivers were workig their engines harder an had different tyre allocation to the race drivers. I can't remember the details but I know it wasn;t a straight fight. Besides there is no point in race drivers setting fastest laps on a Friday as Rosberg has proved.
so does f3 by the looks of it. apparently f2 does as well mind you. hmmm.
In my opinion. Jenson has some very strong skills. He is a very smooth driver. But imagine that there are five things (or 10 or whatever) that it takes to be a great Formula 1 driver. Being the number 1 in one area will get you in to Formula 1, but oddly to be great you don't need to be number one in any of them you need to be strong in lots of areas. Breadth is more important to F1 than strength in one area.
In that Williams he had a car that suited him, and he has it again. Still after all of these years he's relying on Rubens set-up work. I think he is really good at certain things, but I'm not sure he's the complete package. Any more than I'm convinced that Massa or Kimi are. And I really like Kimi.
I am separating what it is that I might like about a person like Jenson or Kimi and how they drive.
The F1 ones havent worked to well this year either...
they have. they're designed to break under massive load and they do.
Danica is saying she doesn't want to go down the path of f1. Perhaps a little bit more money would change that path ;)
She's not an f1 driver. She said 'at the end of the day' twice in two sentences there, something footballers do a lot. If she does change her mind she needs to get exercising some 'for sure' linguistic action.
I went back and watched the start of the accident a few times and the problem is the angle of the wall. You can hear the commentators reaction to the first hit. There are only a couple of bits including the wheel knocked off the car so most o the impact energy went into them so even with F1 type tethers the wheel would probably have come off. It is alls the angle of the wall that causes the wheel to go back on th track.
Christine put it very well in the safety series. At the point that it would damage the car to hold on to the tyre it is designed to break.
agreed. but against a former and rated ex world champ he pushed the guy out of the team. his own team, the team he set up.
that's even more significant than say heikki coming in and pushing out lewis. no?
Perhaps... But... Without wanting to be too mean. JV won his season in a similar way to Jenson wining this season. The car is all.
That is not allowed. You just have to suggest that Ross Brawn may assist one driver an you will be told what a nice person Jenson is.
i agree.
Grrr. i have managed to frustrate myself enormously.... I am going to McDonald's in the hopes this report will analyse itself...
i don't think i like this 'more' button much.... :( what a time for me to show up.....lol
Sorry Lou!
Someone needs to explain the bikin wearing opportunities F1 provides and she will be there with her camera crew in tow.
Chocolate cupcakes. Yum!
Wahhh!! Nightmare doohickey!!!
You crawler
:)
What's the report on. We can do that
;)
it woke you up?
is it wring that i'm following her on twitter?
It's a shame to see that Mr C and Steven didn't think this issue was covered well in the Safety Series ;)
I thought I was just - telling the truth ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/wow-jpg-2
it's gone back to normal now
wtf?
I know, i minimized\maximised and it was ok again. Crazy moment.
*wrong.
is that what happens when the doohickey contains criticism of brawn drivers? doopocalypse?
just seen the new 'sleeping doohickey'. really nice... :-)
You are wasting your time. If you check the safety series posts you will find that I left the first comment on most of them. I am soooo in the clear on this one.
It would be wrong if you wringed her
:)
Dictionary?
I like blackhickey
Mine is never left alone long enough to sleep
it's kinda nice looking at it now
just went away for a mo to get a drink, came back and wahhh!!
i don't think he solely relies on Rubens set-up work. I've read interviews with Rubens over the last 3 years (less so this year) where he has stated that Jenson's set up has helped him. Towards the end of last year i remember Jenson saying both him and Rubens would take parts of each others set up so as to try and achieve the best they could with the car. It looks to me as if they work more as a team and help each other out, rather than keeping the 2 sides of the garage very desperate. I'm not saying Jenson is the best driver ever and the best on a whole, am just sticking up for him ;)
You should some time, it's sooo nice (must be Christine's idea ;-) )
we wouldn't expect any less of you :P
Absolutely. And if he wins the championship this year then I will be very happy. I like him. Can nice guys finish first? Maybe...
Was just going to say the same... It would appear to come from that side of the Sidepodgarage :)
ouch.
Ouch? Sorry if I have misspoken it was the picture that led me to believe
I have a cunning plan. A number 2 doohickey that can sit there and sleep while the other one does the work. Maybe that makes it the number one since it will steal the glory in the end.
we know you did it to make her happy!
hehe. no, you're right.
:)
You do know that Mr C after weeks on the naughty step is back in Christine's good books. There has to be a bigger reason than Milky Bar.
Well once you see the sleephicky you'll know all :)
but.. but... (i think i've probably misunderstood) isn't formula 1 such that you need a decent car to keep scoring points and winning... you can't win a season if the car isn't fast enough. Jenson's not really had a great track record with brilliant cars so not really had a chance at it... of course the car is a massive part, but you can't lead the championship unless you are at least a half decent driver....
;)
Any news appeared on Henry Surtees at all?
Yes you need a decent car to win. Absolutely. But sometimes your car is so much better than everyone else's that nobody else has a chance. You have to keep doing great, and you have to beat your team-mate, but everyone elses options are limited.
Just like Jenson couldn't win last year, there wasn't a chance for him. However this year, and in JV's year, no other team had a chance.
Last year however three teams were close at the top.
Red Bull would beg to disagree.
Well yes. They are pushing hard. It may not be quite the same, but I would say that this year - as it was for Ferrari for many years too - it is Brawns to lose rather than for another teams to win.
True, true.
okay, but who is to say that we wont have a closer season again, and the JB might be able to do well in that too?
Red Bull has only been genuinely competitive in a few races. It remains to be seen if they can be considered to have been competitive overthe full season.
Me. I say that
They've been competitive in every race bar Malaysia and Monaco, actually. It's just that they were always second-best to Brawn.
Nobody. My point is only that it's hard to say that he's amazing because he's either been in terrible or excellent cars both times with little comparative competition.
I think this year would end up being very similar to 2005. Alonso ran away whit the first races, Ferrari caught up in the second half of the year...
You say he will do well in that?
ah okay. fair enough.
They have only been a threat to Brawn on a few occasions. They may have been second best a lot but in many cases there was a comfortable gap back to them
I was trying to stir it up and you go confuse me with questions
how do you know for sure he wouldn't do well? (if that's what you're implying)
Heh :)
It just wasn't clear if you were saying he would do well or not. I suppose that may well have been your point.
This is really starting to remind me of 2005 - except that Red Bull is more reliable.
Which was the gap between Alonso and Schumacher at this point in 2005 Anybody knows?
Scumacher was nowhere in 05, Kimi was his rival
Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much.
sorry, 2006
wrong year... :-(
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Formula_One_season after 9 rounds of 19 in 2005 Alonso had 4 wins a second, a third and a fourth. Kimi had 3 wins and a third and an 8th. Schumacher had A win, 2 seconds, a fifth and 2 7ths
For 2006 Alonso had 6 wins and 3 2nds. Schu had 2 wins, 4 2nds, a 5th and a 6th
Its on mining yeilds and rights ownership on 3 mountains in china... fun?
I like this... new option?
And from there Schumi started to win almost everything, and they arrived to Japan tied in points. That might well happen again...
There's a difference - Mark Webber isn't going to be as helpful as Massa was.
And Ross Brawn is on the other side this time. ;)
I cannot believe how badly thought out the ISS is. One American astronaut on the radio to NASA: Frank is down in the Russian section so he can't talk to you just now. Or I could take a mesage.
The whole thing is not so big that someone can possibly out of reach.
But yes, the scorecards then and now look rather similar.
We have never done that sort of subject before but we have done assignments on all sorts of things so should be easy.
It would make the season a lot more interesting if it turned into a battle between Button and Vettel
So after upsetting everyone here is my random contribution for the afternoon...
I have uploaded to drop.io GigglesRadio... My mad and pointless contribution to Sidepocast Radio...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/gigglesradio-flv
It's 30 mins long.
That's the funny thing, if RBR doesn't stop doing one-two, they don't have to chose a first driver (Alianora did the math :-) ).
It looks like my number 2 doohickey doesn't understand that it is meant to sleep while this one does the work.
using lclt while waiting for doohickey to sleep works ;)
So sharing on the Parade Lap didn't work out. Alex has gone solo. I wonder if it was because of musical differences.
:)
I will try that. Don't all disappear off to another thread now.
no, we'll wait until you've actually switched ;-)
Henry Surtees airlifted to Royal london hospital, which is a trauma centre :(
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77073
No update on his condition...
That probably won't happen until near to 6.
I'd be positive here. While moving him around from one hospital to another isn't the best of signs, at least it means he's alive. Let's hope it gets better from here.
:D
As soon as the lclt opened the twohickey went to sleep. Nice pic. Now I see why he is in Christine's good books temporarily.
Amazingly enough for me... It is a more music and less chat thing.
No I don't know what I was thinking either ;)
I think the combination of Palmer's comment and the fact that they have not said he has regained consciousness is a very bad sign.
I dont think Chrome and drop.io get along anymore :(
Oh that's weird... Newhicky and drop.io both working in Chrome for me right now!
I just got it to work by clicking download... weird
Odd!
Wow, just started playing the Giggles Radio segment. Should be awesome :D
It must have been in a mood, the pictures have started working now too..
It is really good. Still waiting for the professional ramp into a song like Christine does though.
All of the songs start really suddenly... I come out of the songs but not into them.
I am going to nap before debrief. I don't promise to make it back though, I really like naps.
I certainly couldn't be as professional as the Sidepodcast duo :)
Night Amy. You realise if you wake for the show you get two naps but if you don't you only get one
bye Amy. I should also go to eat something. see you
Can anyone?
The TWiT gang?
Hha, just seen all the veg figures on the drop, they are brilliant!
Love this one
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-131
Link button is very complicated!
No way!
Country fairs are strange affairs. I know the person who won the competition though
*fares*
I liked the Michael Jackson one with the note beside it saying King Edward of pop
Who knew there would be head banging music on Giggles Radio?
That was my fav... Don't tell Naomi or Alison!
I tried to balance things out for the Sidepodfans :)
I also really liked this one...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-5-62
Somehow the pipe with smoke coming out of it really tickled me.
All those over achivers that became astronauts and non of them can do plumbing.
Although, as we all know, I don't heart t-shirts...
I do heart realism...
http://www.threadless.com/submission/220223/I_love_realism?streetteam=Raid71
Hahahaha, my mum just phoned me in a panic to tell me the goodwood programme is on ITV4 :P
hehehe thanks for giggles radio Alex :) made great listening :D
Glad you liked it :)
before leaving for lunch, I've dropioed a picture of a Honda F1 from the 60's. I hope someone can tell me exactly which model is it
It was fab. Is it a daily or weekly show?
It needs a wiki page.
Oh dear... What have I done? ;)
Did you survive the headbanging?
Nothing wrong with a bit of headbanging
wassup sir?
Ah maybe I did pitch it correctly then.
Thanks for the appreciation guys!
looks like the RA300 from 1967 to me
They fell out, but they are friends again now...
twas the perfect mix of music :)
awwww thank you :)
I was going to leave it like that and make myself look knowledgeable but I cheated. The tyres suggest 1967 to me so I checked Honda in wikipedia and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_RA300
we.might.have.forgotten.to.do.that
oops. during the four week break. promise.
we need for of this too. alex, amy, scott, rg, anyone else who has a show scheduled.
You know that the bit where you recognised the tyres to the year does make you look SERIOUSLY knowledgeable!
ahh, good.
*more of this. not for of this.
To recover from the headbanging on Giggles Radio Katherine has just made me listen to Take That!
very true.
Excellent, thanks!
I didn't forget but for once, it is something not really dependent on us!
Not really. That was when they started getting wide and they look like those used on the Lotus 49 which was Clark's last car and the first one to use a Cosworth. I wouldn't recognise tyres from most other years.
Anyone could do what I did... for example... And that probably is the better way or you have to sit there pressing buttons all the time!
That's still better than most of us, even me. :D
For a second I thought you meant "Four" of this... Eeek!
I'll see if I can work on something in the week, if not next Saturday for next Sunday :)
You keep showing your knowledge there :-)
christine's radio software will cue these things up, but the point you make about the lack of live comments could be an issue. maybe a mix of both?
I noticed that Lacuna Coil had some songs on the site while I was selecting my tracks. I couldn't really fit that much headbanging stuff on my show. But Lukeh might like something like that!
the more, the better ;)
You know me too well
I love it. However, I wants more talking and less music :)
Having said that, now I leave to lunch. I'm preparing a few pictures from last year Paris autoshow, I'll let you know when they're up. See you
It's odd because I just realised that was a point I made on the video!
Yeah... It's a tough balance. I thought I should throw my hat into the ring. Especially as I get the benefit of the live audience the rest of the time.
Uh oh!
They have Closer!!! :D
Bye Guille
cheers sir.
i just wish we'd have remembered before 5:30 on a sunday :(
I thought of dancing to the music during the songs... But I felt that joke would really have only worked once!
You don't like his taste in music?
I was going to plan a skype conference call for my show to discuss various sim racing topics, but for obvious reasons I'm thinking against it. :P
have written sidepodradio into our wall diary on the 2nd august.
Only that I pretty much know every podsafe song inside out, having trawled the web for the past three years.
Sorry I should have said earlier but I only remembered when I came back in at 3ish... I thought that if I mentioned it would create a mad panic :(
You are actually going to do sidepodradio?
I guess that makes you a tough audience. Maybe Alex should have put together his rap from yesterday's comments.
And I followed Mr C's trick of using the most popular search.
YAY!
That said - Amy, we need to get down to work. :D
I thought sidepodradio was a talked about thing not an actual radio show. I so don't have anything to contribute!
yes.
They were all good 'uns :)
Amy, we REALLY need to talk about this. :D
wohoo!! :D
I thought you were sleeping
Wow, this project really is going to take off. Let's just hope we're not "ambitious but rubbish" like TG. Judging by Alex's initial effort, I think it can be done!
it's real and it's going to happen. the only difference i think from what's already been said, is that it's a one-off thing, rather than every week.
just something to fill the summer break.
Woah.
Awesome. Always have lots of ideas. :)
Not anymore, she ain't. :D
Not to mention we're first up! :O Pop me a PM on the Wiki?
Oh, I have your email! Better there. :D
Oh dear. I wish I could remember what I volunteered to do let alone what I volunteered anyone else for.
One is infinitely more than I expected. ;)
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
...and maybe again at christmas.
:D
I see a trend here and I don't need a graph to see where it is going
yay! *prays it happens before the 16th August when she goes on holiday*
Mr C says 2nd.
Just about right. :D
:P:P
awesome. *puts it in diary* ;)
Will probably need to revamp that page for proper volunteers, details and submissions. :)
I thought it was 24/7? :P
:D
Amy, are you still here? I dropped ya an email.
they're not proper?
Two smilies. Do I detect the imbibing of copiuos quantities of an unnamed energy drink?
Something tells me Flibster won't want to do a show?
I guess the first thing is how long can it broadcast for?
As long as it takes.
oh.
f1 minute on the hour, every hour though. that'll be ace ;)
Yup, and will we need to pre-record this?
He really has been away for a while. Hope he's OK.
specially with the news as it is atm ;)
some things yes. and maybe live things too.
last seen heading to the nurburgring...
It'll be just like BBC News' 90 second update :D
I expect the Ari Interview will need to be recorded ;)
i thought he was on holiday the other day... heading to the Nürburgring?
He's not lost in the Green Hell, is he?
He was on during the week. Last I heard he was re-programming his satnav from Nuremburg to Nurburg and heading to the 'Ring. Hopefully he still has a car in one piece.
I love this NASA press conference. They have a broken toilet in the US section of the station so the 6 ISS crew members use the Russian toilet and the shuttle crew use the shuttle toilets. Now they have discovered that they can't do waste water dumps from the shuttle as it will affect experiments on the new porch so their are limiting the number of people who can use the shuttle toilet.
Didnt you say the cargo hold is empty? cant they just use that?
Mmmmmmm. Daiiillly threeeaadd.
Lands in Daily
ditto
I return. Alive. Tried the third oldest trick in the book, moaning non-stop. Moaned from since I left to the start of the film and even a bit after. Sadly, it failed to work and I get the feeling the parents is looking forward to the next two coming up. Grr.
RG! Have you seen how your Sidepodradio idea has taken off?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
What show do you want to do?
You've missed a lot of Sidepodradio stuff!
Welcome back, Head to the live thread and we are organising sidepodradio...
sign your show up here http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
I type too slowely...
on the plus side this is a tangible example of why i am not doing transcripts!
We've been veering into two threads again
Hehehe. Good excuse :)
#RWS WTCC - Overall I qualified 7th, which puts me in the A Final lobby with my teammate :D
Christine: You have my email address for pre-show discussions don't you
Name @ gmail is best
I'm expecting royalites. Lots of it. Money, money, money...
Hold on, I seem to have been sidetracked by greed. I love it, I'm doing something. No idea what just yet though.
Cool, will do. Have some thoughts already :)
Mr C suggested you continue the predictions show idea, but as their is no show, you could just predict anything in life. Like Nostradamus.
As there is no RACE sorry.
Excellent, Barry Norman - eat your heart out
#RWS WTCC - Here we go, it's Superpole time!
RG-adamus. I like it.
Uh... yes. Who?
Here we go again...
He did the BBC Film show before Rossy
This is going well ;)
This will be the entire show! I think there will be Sony Radio nominations in the works afterwards.
Is it actually going to be on radio or skype?
#RWS WTCC - Messed up my lap and hit the wall. Means I start last. No matter, I can just sit back and watch the inevitable carnage into Turn 1.
Actually I have seen a new-ish film
On the flight I watched "Let the right one in"
A Swedish Vampire art-house flick
SPC I expect
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
He was the guy who di Film whatever before Jonathan Ross
Correction - 6th. One guy didn't finish his lap.
The Nostradamus Effect. What a title.
Yeah, okay, I did nick it from somewhere.
"Well, there you are then" :)
See I have learnt something already. Sidepodcast Radio is educational.
I'll save that one for the show
#RWS WTCC - Here goes Race 1, 14 laps in the dry. I'm gonna need some luck here. LOL
Christine & Bassano, the next Kermode & Campbell
I meant Kermode & Mayo, obviously
Good luck!
I was worried I would have to say who again...
Who are they?
I have actually subscribed to their podcast but not had chance to listen to any of it yet.
I think he still writes for the Radio Times.
Mark Kermode does a great Film review show on Radio 5 Live with Simon Mayo that's also a weekly podcast
Tis good
If we get the current top 10 movies for that week, we can make up short, pithy reviews as the chart runs down
I was thinking it would be good to do yours and my top ten movies too.
Could do that
Have you actually seen more than 10? Ah yes, the last film review was number 11.
Harsh but fair. :)
Phew, escaped the naughty step then ;)
PayPal password reset & done
LPG wants to know if there is a freezer at SPC towers.
Olivier panis is on Top Gear!
We do have a freezer, yes.
Will watch later
No one escapes the naughty step! ;)
Does Mr C know where it is?
Our chief weapon is fear. Fear and surprise
OK, you'll need some space in it for the recipe.
It's the top half of where the energy drinks are stored :)
He does. It is in the kitchen. The real problem is persuading him to go in there.
Rubens Blah-Blah-Blah-rrichello - The Single is funny
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBYd9UVBGTs
Wonder if you could make something with some energy drink in it?
He needs no excuse to drink more of that stuff
His poor kidneys
Red Bull cocktails.
The drinking slot is not a good idea
I reckon we have to hear Mr C eat what LPG makes him cook .. then we'll know how good or not it is
Oh dear
The proof will literally be in the pudding
I like that.
How do you know it will be pudding?
I don't
He loved his cupcake when he made that. It's on the Parade Lap from the Brazil race last year.
Though when he's finished it may look like pudding ;)
But the bonus for Mrs C is that if it turns out to be any good Mr C might actually start helping in the kitchen
#RWS WTCC - Had a poor race and had to fight off the 6th place Chevy with a damaged car. Am hoping the reverse grid race in the wet will be better, Means out of 7 cars I will start 3rd.
hehe could you imagine Lou does a show and gets Mr C to do make some textiles
I can see a series in this. Mr C follow instructions on........ or Educating Mr C
Oh no...
5live said Henry Surtees has sadly passed away. RIP. What a horrible shame...
:(
instead of "challenge Aneka" we could have "challenge MrC"
Wow, was just reading he was in Intensive Care
Very sad
Oh no, that's tragic
Yup.
I'm waiting for more information to appear though... still... :(
Jesus christ. R.I.P Henry :(
Don't know what to think, tragic.
Another reminder that motorsport is dangerous. The saddest thing is that his father managed to survive the deadliest era of F1 only to have his son die racing in much safer conditions. :(
Those of you who have a really good memory will know that I have been tipping a young Northern Irish driver called Wayne Boyd as a future star. I saw hi in a Formula Ford race last year and he was incredible. He stepped up to F3 this season and his results have not been that great. Today he won his first F3 race in stunning style by the sounds of it.
The race started dry but became very wet and when a safety car came out while he was in tenth place. Autosport describes some of his overtaking moves as swashbuckling. In wet conditions in cars set up for the dry he was 1.5 seconds a lap faster than anyone.
This boy is a star.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77086
Did you see this on twitter, I'd just been looking on Autosport for more info
I thought from Palmer's comment that was going to be the case. Shame.
Yeah, but it came from 5LiveF1. Which to me, would be a reliable source. :(
I've seen 5 live twittersaying it and people saying the Autosport editor has confirmed it.
Wasn't 5Live mentioned
THat would work
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77088
yes but they do twitter and it hasn't come up on my reader
Tweeted at 21:10
aww man :(
really sad day... :-(
Very, very sad.
Unfortunatly, it isn't the only motorsport death to occur this weekend, an Italian co-driver, Flavio Gugelmini, died in the ERC Rally of Bulgaria (link)
May they both rest in peace.
Not a good weekend at all for motorsport.
Thats terribly sad, I am completly shocked.
Hopefully the lessons will be learned and ensure that it wont happen again
Is Formula Two not as safety concious as F1? Apparently it's the sencond time that a tyre has become untethered in as many races.
Jeez, this is rubbish... just imagine what might have happened to DC if he had got hit by that flying F1 car a year or 2 ago?! RIP Henry ;-(
It makes all our messing about seem a bit inappropriate somehow.
Not a good thing for Williams either
Can't remember, I think it was fit around the 2005 F1 safety regulations
Wheels come off cars every week in all sorts of classes. The energy of an F2 accident is a fraction of an F1 crash.
Or Max Mosely and F2 as a whole.
has been put together on the smallest imaginable budget. did they cut costs? wouldn't be like williams to do that would it?
The person whose car hit him must be devastated
Any wheel tethers?
Was a flying wheel from another crash I think
Evening all,
Sad sad day innit :(
People have always died in race cars. For me life is for the living and you have to enjoy it as much as you can because you don't know when something might end it.
Hey Gavin
Hi Gavin.
Hi Gavin
I don't think it affects any of them. It was a normal racing incident and a small percentage of them are fatal.
He died doing what he loved, the best thing to come out of it will be for lessons to be learned and further lives saved
a minor but fun update to lighten the mood:
http://backpackersguidetof1.vox.com/library/post/summary.html
apparently, yes.
costs should never come before safety. The FIA have many strict safety procedures i can't see them allowing a series to run with an unsafe car.
I think (I hope) it was just a freak accident, tethered wheels can, and do come off, and the likelihood of a wheel landing on someone's head was minuscule it's just exceedingly unfortunate that the incident happened. Undoubtedly there will now be an in depth investigation (possibly several, after all this was in the UK) and hopefully, lessons will be learnt.
Hi Gavin
You have been volunteered to be on the 22:30 show
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
Hopefully, they'll be beefed up
Hotdogs, 8 pounds in Turkey!!
Robert Kubica, Canada 2007. Wheels came off.
Exactly right. Anyone getting into a race car knows the risks and if they have the sense they sit and rationally consider whether they are prepared to take them.
But it will surely put back on the table the flying wheels problem.
Need to eat, back in a bit
Didn't this also happen at the Australian GP this year when Vettel and Kubica collided?
Yeah.
I'm not on there ... and I can't make it because I'm in Mallorca. Thanks for volunteering me though...
yes
Aww.. No worries... try and tune in if you can!
Costs have to come into it though. How safe do you make something before it is safe enough? There was a British F3 champion in the 80s called Jamie Spence and his 8 year old brother was killed in a kart race. I could make karting for kids effectively 100% safe but no-one could afford to buy and run the karts and the racing would be hopeless.
Safety is finite in any situation and there is always limited by cost.
I think that was why Vettle and Red Bull got penalised - for continuing driving. Hopefully some more consideration of this sort of freak accident can be further reduced. I seemed to remember that last F1 accident was a also a wheel collecting a marshal - or am I mistaken?
I think there is not muche they could do to improve it. All the energy of the accident went into that wheel. Even with F1 tethers it was parting company with the car.
It's actually on you-tube already would you believe
I just think it is all very fishy how we have had some awful accidents over the years and then suddenly a cheapo series is knocked together in record time and somebody dies...
It was on before he was confirmed to have died.
agreed.
It will be considered but if half a tonne of car hits a barrier at 100 mph at an angle and the wheel makes the major contact it is coming off regardless what you tie it on with.
There are cleverer people than me to decide those things - and many, many tests they have devised.
DC went over Wurz in Aus then Vettel Kubica this season
About 10 mins after it happened i seem to remember...
It was a freak accident, I believe it was Jack Clarke, he crashed, the energy went to the wheel, bounced across the track. It could have happend in any racing series at any time.
Just unfortunate it happend today.
Surely not the accident?Personally I think the poster should remove it.
You and Giggles are on holiday. You can pre-record a show if you like.
yep
It was on not long after the crash, way before this announcement to be fair.
Although it's obviously not nice to watch... not that I'm condoning it being there of course.
It was on youtube hours ago. We watched it when it was tweeted.
You say that, but how many times has Senna's crash been replayed?
Its all about cost and whether you want to mitigate against highly likely scenarios (like this one) by spending more money!? I mean I am sure he would have survived if the cockpit design was different, its all about risk and how much they want to spend mitigating it....
Motor racing fatalities are not rare http://www.motorsportmemorial.org/query.php?db=ct&q=year&n=2009
Well, there is an idea down here about how to deal with that. Some engineer in Argentina thinks that making the tyre losing pressure if it loses contact with the car can greatly reduce the speed and forces involved in the impact if it comes to hit something.
I am really not sure about the focus on accidents some people have - I like seeing great overtakes.
Now that it is a fatal yes.
But off course, it won't make any difference if you are hitting the tyre...
It is just a bit of a shock because F1 has been comparatively safe since the sad accident of Senna.
#RWS WTCC - Finished 2nd after managing to grab the lead into the first couple of corners. Managed to hold it (and everyone else up) for about 8-9 laps before I made one or two tiny mistakes and the SEATs got by. Still managed to fight back to 2nd place, which is still good but I know the win was there and it could have been more.
Next race is Brno, so for sure the Volvo will hopefully be on better form there. To be honest, I now hate Pau with a vengeance because it's so damn easy to get it wrong and mess up your race in an instant. From what I've tested the car is good on normal circuits so here's hoping I have an overall good race event.
I never said they were. But this series was championed by Max Mosley - ironically the safety crusader. I'm not blaming Max, but maybe if this series was gestated properly and not as a hurried pawn for Max and his cost cutting agenda, something could have been different today.
I love seeing accidents, but not those that involve serious injury or loss of life.
I was discussing in the comments earlier today how long I have argued for proper head protection in single seaters. It is the only part of the body that it is exposed.
Agreed. They have to walk away.
I watched the crash before it was confirmed, which weirdly lead me to watch "other" vids of Ronnie Peterson etc... (I just like knowing what happened, and only saw the original accident.. I am not morbid or anything!) May they all RIP ....
That was suggested after the Senna accident. I think the FIA looked at mechanisms to puncture tyres
It's like the years before Senna's crash. People started to believe that any accident was survivable.
I can't see any problems with the car. I am less than impressed with the angle of the barrier that Clarke hit as I said earlier. To me that is the major contributor.
I guess what I am saying is that to put up a video showing an accident where there was serious injury, or more particularly a fatal one on YouTube doesn't seem right to me. I was actually quite concerned when I saw Sutil's accident at Silverstone.
I will be interested to see what happens now then. Normally we get a knee-jerk reaction and the wrong thing happens.
What can you do though, the morality of the internet is as high or as low as the individuals that use it...
Night all, I'm off to bed .. really sad end to the day. RIP Henry, such a waste of a young life.
See you tomorrow Jackie.
I'll say what I always say - you're not forced to watch.
night jackie
I hate the fact that there are fatal accidents on youtube. I can understand watching them to learn from them and that is what some of us did earlier. My interest in it was the original crash and the outcome of that rather than the Surtees crash which is simply a guy being hit on the head with a wheel.
Trouble is I don't believe that the majority of people are watching these accidents for anything other than the wrong reasons.
Since its Max's baby there may be a suspension of the F2 calendar for a while.
That is the problem.
Night Jackie
Do you think Brands hatch could be in trouble too?
Howdy all,
Just got in from a very good day, some very exciting news, the 2CV race that i'm helping with is being broadcast live all over the world...Radio Le Mans style...
More info here.
Hi Jon.
Have you heard the sad news?
They won't be in trouble. There may be some changes made to the track but nothing major. To me they need to re-align the barrier and if it can't be moved back then it needs to be closer to the track.
What news?
I doubt it - after Senna's crash he was adamant the F1 would continue when asked that...
Nice, we get to hear how you get on then.
Henry Surtees died in a F2 race.
Henry Surtees is dead :(
You might wanna look back at the comments :(
Henry Surtees got killed in the F2 race at Brands
Thats terrible. Not sure what to say really
F1 is high profile and public.
F2 was made high profile by Max's insistence, remember...?
Good evening. I've just been reading the terrible news.
Hey Pat.
High profile to us. It is not on TV with an audience in 100s of millions every two weeks or in every newspaper in the planet. Ask at work tomorrow how many people know about F2 or Henry Surtees. It won't make a ripple
Fair enough (but it's a moot point anyway because nobody at my work likes F1 ;) )
It will be interesting to see how Max reacts to this. We were all impressed by how fast F2 got off the ground. Perhaps it was too fast? I know this was a freak accident but surely the wheel tethers were designed to take a bigger impact than that?
There was absolutely nothing they could have done except make hte wheel teathers so the tyres dont come off the car at all and we've had the conversation before that they take the momentum from the wheels not stopping them moving at all. It could have happened in any series, it was a freak accident, no blame can be put on anyone for this.
I'm gonna keep an eye on the news on TV to see if there's any reports on it.
Now watching ITV News.
I think it will make the papers, with all the 'motorsport is getting safer' especially.
Nothing in the headlines part. Will hold out for the sport section.
The wheel took the full impact. There were only one or two bits thrown from the car. The only dissipation of energy was the deformation of the car and the wheel coming off. I can't see any problem with the car beyond the fact that no single seater has good head protection.
just a quick curveball to throw into the conversation. christine's received an interesting email from a concerned fan.
the gist of the email essentially says - you're knocking a certain unnamed news agency without proof of their research processes and that's just not on.
it continues - it's dodgy territory if the offended person has made it clear he is interested in the discussions going on.
finally, a follow up email then suggests some media professionals are using spc to take shots at a certain unnamed news agency.
i'm paraphrasing of course, but clearly the concerned fan knows an awful lot about spc, and is very concerned for our well being.
which is nice.
anyhow, thought you'd all be interested to know that there are so many lovely people watching our backs. we should probably get in touch with those media professionals and ask them to stop asap.
The only reason it will get any coverage is because his name is Surtees. If it was someone who was not conected to someone famous the coverage will be a fraction of what we do get.
Exactly, everything happened as it was supposed too, it was just really really really unfortunate that the wheel happened to bounce at that exact moment.
oo-er... what on earth?
Certainly not a good start to the series. The fact that Henry was son of former world champion John Surtees will make it more sensational, as sadely, does the freak nature of the accident. I can still remember watching the accident that claimed Tom Pryce's life at Kyalami.
Looks like it wasnt a great day for motorsport all round..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/8157912.stm
im a little confused
This is a sad day for motorsport. :(
Is there a touch of sarcasm I don't get here?
But do you not think after all the accidents we have had that wheel tethers could be made stronger?
I thought you'd just said that you thought finding ten F1 stories every day of the year could be a bit hard to achieve.
Don't think so, not sure what it means.
We've had this conversation before, it depends on what the wheel teathers are for. I would agree that they should keep the wheels on the car, but that means there is more momentum again the monocoque, the wheel teathers are to dissipate the momentum from the wheels, but in bigger crashes (or smaller ones) like in Australia with Vettel (i think) it's clear they aren't meant to keep the wheels on the car.
Sport section is now on ITV News. Will wait for any report.
yes.
i wonder where in the world this concerned fan lives ?
My understanding is that the wheel tethers are made to slow down a flying wheel and not to keep the wheel on the car at all costs.
;)
Was my understanding too. Like i say, it was a freak accident, a tenth of a second earlier and it would have the front instead.
am so very confused now
don't worry about it.
Same here. The grey bits are too tired!
Just remember Godfrey vs Demon Internet and you'll be fine.
Time to head off to sleep and begin 3 days of, quite simply, bleh. Night all.
am going to read it again with my sarcastic head on
Night lukeh
Night Lukeh!
night lukeh.
Man, I really can't feel happy about anything now. Poor Henry :( And poor John. Losing his son at such a young age. I'm sure no father wants to outlive his son :(
Night Lukeh
Mr GMM has a mate? Or even a fan? Who would have thought it?
Since that person (I think I will call him Andrew) is reading this let me try and clarify a few things.
The reason we are not fans of GMM is because we noticed that most of the stories they published were rubbish. We did not see the name and decide it would be fun to slag them off. The rubbish came before the slagging.
Mr GMM then came here and told us that it was OK if 80% of his stories were rubbish because that meant that he could put out 20% that were accurate. I am sure Anfrew knows of the original thread and has read the comment where Mr GMM mentioned those figures.
This lead us to believe that we were correct originally and re-inforced our belief that any story attributed to GMM is worthless.
GMM frequently quote stories from Bild and Diario AS despite the fact that everyone knows that these are two of the worst three sources for F1 stories. I will leave Andrew to work out the third.
As a test of the accuracy of two of those three companies can Andrew tell us when they first reprorted that Alonso was going to Ferrari. According to Fernando himself those rumours have been around for 4 or 5 years and we know who has been spreading them.
If Andrew wants us and everyone else to have a higher opinion GMM I have a simple two stage strategy that would guarantee that would happen. 1. Before GMM report a story check with a reputable source to see if there is any truth in it. 2. Don't report stories from known bad sources or sources you have never heard of before.
I just find it very odd that my accuracy is many times higher than someone who is charging for news stories. Come to that my accuracy at forecasting what will happen in any situation is higher than GMM's accuracy at reporting events that have already happened or at least he claims have already happened.
I saw that on youtube a while back. I was watching a video and didn't knw the accident was on it. That was horrific.
I am not sure what that would achieve.
ITV are doing a thing on what the moon landing news would have been 40 years ago... awesome
I know how you feel, I just feel for his parents so much and he was so young - it was such a cruel twist of fate. Still have not been tempted to watch the video.
Oh yeah, that's tomorrow innit?
I believed after round 1 F2 was a good series. I believe it still is, sadly the death of Surtees will cast a shadow over it.
I think they are doing 5 mins every night after the news
I wonder if there will be any sort of recognitionat the next gp, I hope so...
Nelson tweeted his condolences...
it occurs to me. what's really needed is some competition in this space.
the f1 world needs a brand new low cost news aggregation service. nothing sharpens the mind like a bit of honest competition.
Or as the Now Show did - "Neil and Buzz, this is Davina. You are live on every single TV channel in the world, please do not swear. The lines are closed, the votes have been counted and verified. The first person to leave the Lunar Module is.........
........Neil"
But I am only one person sitting in front of a computer with no connection to F1 and no paddock pass. How would that qualify me to charge people for second hand gossip of suspect veracity?
is the answer high definition and widescreen? streamed via justin.tv?
:)
In all honesty you can report something but always cite your source so other people can be the judge of the accuracy. Any article that sources any of the above I do treat with caution, but then I do the same with Jeremy Clarkson and what is on Top Gear. I still enjoy the programme even if it is not truthful.
Are you sure this isn't from Giggles?
There is some element of truth, in that the heavy use of Google Translate is speculation..
That's interesting. I don't recall having seen anything of the sort, perhaps behind the scenes?
Very!
If you know who they are?
am sure.
I don't think you need to be qualified.
Its more like the news on this day in 1969, they just talked to patrick more about what he thought the astronauts would be getting ready to do over the next few hours
but the series is probably not to blame - it seems that such an accident could have happen in an open class autosport. It should not be stigmatised because of this.
exactly!
as per andy's recommendation a second ago, i removed a comment that directly suggested such a thing.
It could happen in anything from Formula Ford to F1.
Here's a bit of light relief, Star Wars fans may not want to watch though.
http://www.dvorak.org/blog/2009/07/19/ok-this-is-just-wrong-on-so-many-levels/
That is fabulous
Awesome!
That was on Britain's Got (no) Talent.
I feel that most drivers and parents of drivers do know the risks attached to many autosports and indeed other extreme sports. If the accident was preventable then it should be fully analysed - but freak events happen irrespective of what ever safety is in place - it is very sad these things do happen.
I don't want to offend anyone here, especially Mr and Mrs C.
But i can see both sides of the argument here.
On the one hand Mr Mystery news agency see's their reporting method as being on the same model as is used in the mainstream news by some of the lower end agency's who fill English language newspapers with minimal staff all over the world.
On the other hand, this is F1, this isn't the real world, people do have access and these stories can be researched properly by people who have access. These stories seem to be primarily published online, which is completely unnecessary given that there are many websites written by journalists which have the ability to research these stories properly. Thirdly we as fans get incredibly frustrated having poorly sourced stories published with the same authority as those which are completely factual.
Perhaps this points to a bigger problem in the f1 journalistic community, there don't seem to be any freelance journalists who are successfully and broadly distributing their stories. This could be the problem with FIA requiring publications to be accredited rather than individual journalists.
I will confess to reading stories on an f1 site which uses such an agency, however i do so (hopefully) with the knowledge to know what is likely to be true and what is speculative. I fear others cant do this, and are essentially being misled.
I hope this hasnt annoyed anyone;) Sorry if it has
I am talking about agency new here,
not at all nick. balance is good.
hehe, I am relieved :D
To change the topic a bit it seems the EU might well investigate the FIA with respect to its selection of new teams.

all we've ever asked is that you don't quote stories here without first checking with a reliable source. what we dislike is spending hours and hours debunking nonsensical stories which had no right to ever be published.
i suspect teams press officers feel the same.
The alternative is to provide your source(s) so it/they can be checked out!
I saw that. I thought N. Tech had already gone to the courts, it would strike me as more effective than any ECC action, since the ECC like to take their time over things (and by time I mean around about 10 years)
It's just occured to me that Henry Surtees was younger than me, in my year at school.
There is another element to this, There may be stories which the teams dont want to get out, and as such may trade exclusicve interviews with drivers e.t.c. for major news organisations to keep them quiet.
I would hope that this rarely happens. But from my limited time in the media i know it does.
Having said that though, 98% of the time you can judge a stories merits from where it is reported and where it isnt.
N. Tech has and this should add more issues for Max to deal with. He has not be impartial so he should be accountable.
The can issue advisory's though, which organisations usually follow unless they are Microsoft as they usually lead to huge fines.
that means we have to do they checking out though? we don't have time.
which is why we always ask that you check out any story before posting. it's only fair on us.
Max taking someone else's advise?!
Not that I'm here... But most News Agencies have traditionally been the opposite of what is described. The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independednt and The Mail don't need to all send their reporters to such and such sporting event so Reuters or whoever send their chap and all the papers pay for the Reuters content.
This is the opposite. Nobody is sent, and this is just sourced from whatever anyone can find.
However, I must say, I only created Giggles Made-up Media as a joke. I didn't mean to upset anyone.
and we love it and you'll keep doing it. it's not hurting anyone and it's a fun game for a sunday morning ;)
Yes but no-one can know how reliable any story truly is. There will be times when the said new sources will be right - if someone puts a comment with a source you have two choice - ignore as suspect or quickly review the link. The BBC itself has come for some issue about accuracy in recent times.
Absolutely! Nobody should be hurt by it. If you are you think we are in some way accurate in our assessment which says much more about you than us.
of course. but in our experience some are more reliable than others.
that's why we created this page.
if you think that's too much trouble, we can point you in the direction of plenty of f1 forums only too keen to receive your un-sourced new articles. they'll debate them endlessly, i promise.
Am still not taking a GMM story seriously, no matter how upset 'a fan' gets
That sounds a little too much like 'comply or leave' to me - which I know was not your intention...
it clearly isn't. however, if someone spent all day linking to said articles, you be one of the first to tell them where to go. right?
If you stop, Andrew wins, so please don't!
You must take the Giggles Made-up Media stories seriously though because they are the truth.
Like this... GMM hears that Max and Bernie are going to take their popular Karaoke partnership on tour. Apparently their version of "I will survive" can bring the house down.
I'd help
Well I guess that would be true!
Oh indeed, Giggles Made-Up media is like The Gospel to me ;)
The Gospel according to Lukeh ;)
Need some of this between music links in the SidepodRadio hour from Giggles
Accuracy is like safety. There is no 100%. The trouble is as I said in my earlier comment it was noticed that GMM articles were incredibly inaccurate lik Diario AS and Bild. Then Mr GMM came here and told us he does no quality checks at all.
I can't remember the story that caused his original visit but it was something to do with Mercedes. THe GMM story appeared and everyone questioned it. James Allen made one phone call and killed the story.
Matthew, Mark, Lukeh & Jon
♥
ahaha :D
It was Mercedes voting to pull the plug of F1, IIRC
It was that Mercedes survived a narrow vote from the board that they would pull out of F1. JA phoned Mercedes who confirmed it was false.
This was after some GMM story about Alonso being in a plane crash, where a word was omitted from the original quote that said that his plane had brushed another on the runway...
I thought it was a fence?
Well I was just about to add Jon Waldock!
and alonso wasn't in it at the time.
Yeah something like that. The point was that the GMM story implied he had a crash when it was a fender bender...
That's it....
And Mercedes wasn't particularly happy about the false story going around...
Goodnight everyone!
Sweet Sidepodreams :)
Yeah same here... good night all!
Night Alex and Gavin
night sir.
Not long ago Jame Allen (one of your reliable sources) had an entire blog of why he thinks Fernando is going to Ferrari at some future point. Some of the "unreliable" have been saying the same thing - Fernando is of course denying this. It does not help in cases like the Bourdais story with STR saying it was rumour he was leaving only two days before he was axed and BBC saying his wife has confirmed it but LeSeb saying he was shocked when it happened. Ultimately this is a discussion area, being to restrictive could destroy its very purpose namely to discuss - every story is unlikely to be fully and truthfully stated because people have different perceptions and even agendas.
laterz
G'night to the sleepy heads
night alex and gavin
Night Alex.
Night all who are leaving
& night Gavin
night to those going
Good night to the Other Bassano as well!
:)
You just have to build up a picture of each source and unfortunately GMM's picture says they are massively inaccurate and the guy came here are tried to tell us why it was good that he put out inaccurate stories.
That is the point his mate / fan seems to be missing. Mr GMM came and said the majority of his stories were rubbish and he has done nothing since to improve that.
hasn't harmed it thus far?
as far as i'm aware spc is one the only places on the f1 web where sensible, but heated, debate is still possible. and i don't make statements like that lightly.
the policy of encouraging the validation of sources has been in place for at least 12 months and so far as i can tell works well for us. or do you not see it that way?
I treat them as suspect - so usually avoid unless it appears elsewhere - unfortunately sites like PlanetF1 often take up a story from a source like GMM without giving the source and this adds validity. I still say you should provide a link to your source so each person can see the context.
I'd agree with that
Also, if the owner of a news media service admits that 80% of his stories are inaccurate, then we are merely being accurate in repeating this, so long as we don't say which stories are incorrect.
Think I'm going to go to bed now, long day, for me at least. Night.
I think there's a big difference between saying: Look at this amazing news!! that then turns out to be nonsense, to for example what we did on the show today, which was unsubstantiated Pedalo news, but wouldn't it be interesting if that happened.
night rg.
Night!
G'night Mr G
Plus you're not reporting it as fact or even "it is expected that" - which is BBC code for "we have the story but it's under embargo".
Allen believes in the Alonso-Ferrari story because his source (Pino Alievi) is very reliable when it comes to Ferrari news. Actually, he said that when he saw Pino talking about it as a fact, then he was convinced about it, not before. In the same way, I believe that story is likely to be true because of that source...
You are not charging for it
That too.
OOps, night all...I know you cant read this , but thought i would say it anyway :D
not me night... them night!
If Lukeh was around, he'd be proud. We're eating a late night snack of toast.
If I can't see it, I must be imagining it ;)
Topping/spread?
I know I raised this but I also said if you can believe the source - in other words is this likely to occur has anyone seen a better source to confirm?
Remember a Public Broadcaster is not under obligation to report factually even in a documentary - this came up with Channel 4 with the Great Global Climate Swindle - the swindle was they deliberately changed scientific consensus by selectively ignoring the most recent evidence and pedantic use of words. Their conclusions were blatant untruths but they could not actually be made accountable.
Just I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.
Type of Bread? :P
More evidence that outside = bad:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/8158022.stm
our motivation is solely to keep the conversations at a sensible and realistic level.
whether anyone believes the nonsensical stories makes no odds to me. all i care about is not having to spend hours talking about stuff that simply never happened.
Kingsmill. :)
I can
Not so interesting fact [apparently]
Margarine is black before it's coloured for sale
No way!
When i had to make it it was a beigie white
It looked awfull!
White, wholemeal or seeded?
Maybe I read that at GMM then :(
Sidepod radio show...
Can MrC distinguish between Butter and ICBINB
White.
Haha!
Did you make it from scratch?
I need to do some research on this now
This has not been a good day. Surtees was not the only fatality.
It's been mentioned
Very sad
No, it's white. Are you trying to argue that black is white? :)
When jogging goes bad!
I think so, i cant really remember it was in Home Ec, i never really paid any attention, i think i was sat next to a girl
I've been lied to all these years :(
I am never going outside again
They should cycle....its faster
Way
Remember also that the man who invented (popularised) jogging, died whilst out jogging. Proves that it is dangerous.
i told Lukeh on msn about the late night snack of toast and he says 'wooo!' and 'they appear to be stealing my toast with the same bread and butter' lol :)
You made Marge in Home Ec?
Buy some butter, it's waaay better
I want to see your source before I believe! What I do know is that it is not yellow!
Yup, that co-driver on Rally Bulgaria too. :(
When it comes out of the lab or something. Starting to sound decidedly shaky now. I should sell this news and make a mint ;)
How do you invent jogging?
Was he just going for a run and worried he would get to his destination to soon? :P
It was an homage to him.
I've finally put together the pictures from the 2008 Paris Motorshow (yeah, I know, I'm not digital yet so my whole edition process can take some time...). I thought you could enjoy some of them:
http://guille2306-pictures.blogspot.com/2009/07/mondial-de-lautomobile-paris-2008.html
(and sorry for the plug :-) )
He started the jogin craze in the 80s that popularised the idea of everyone trying to keep fit.
I'm hearing that it's grey now
What have I done, I've created a monster
Lukeh has MSN, and I wasn't informed of this?
;) :D
Thats what i was thinking....
Jogging was surely invented by Adam and Eve as they didn't have the stamina to sprint away from god...
"You know that stuff they're selling now at the local shop, 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter'? Well, I can't believe it's not butter. Then yesterday, I went to Crookenden and I bought this other stuff, like a sort of home-brand, you know? And you know, I can't believe it's not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Well, you know I Can't Believe It's Not Butter? No no, I mean you know the stuff that I can't believe is not butter is called I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Well I can't believe the stuff that is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and I can't believe that both I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and the stuff that I can't believe is not I Can't Believe It's Not Butter are both, in fact, not butter. And I believe they both might be butter, in a cunning disguise. And in fact there's a lot more butter around than we all thought there was."
Why are you sorry for plugging your blog? Heck, we all do it here!
And a driver called Ricardo Londono was murdered in Colombia. I must confess I'd not heard the name before, a quick check shows he DNQ'd at the 1981 Brazilian GP.
:-)
:)
People still use MSN! Nobody told me! I thought it dies out when facebook landed...
:D
What's that from Andy?
MSN is so early decade. I didn't realise people still used it, other than my kid sister.
That sounds right - I know it is bleached before being coloured yellow - I don't eat the stuff - rather eat good bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar or occasional butter.
Bored of Facebook
Facebook chat is good, but flawed
The kids love a bit of Instant Messenger
Saves on phone credit I guess
But then skype came along to save from it.
Bonus: It works on my phone... Free txting
facebook chat is annoying.. msn is much better.
Vicar of Dibley.
The other one I like is Milton Jones:
My auntie Marge was in hospital for months, we used to say "I can't believe she's not better"
I still use it!
I was with it back in the mid 90's....
They call me old Skool
I'm there too - andy_j_taylor at hotmail dot com.
:D
I must have been aware of him at the time but I have no memory of every hearing that name
But MSN is more used, and the smileys are better ;)
I am going to sign into MSN for the first time in over 4 years. I had 60 odd contacts on there.
Lets guess how many people are online...
And you don't need a big internet connection to run it
3?
Does anyone remember msn web messenger... do they know how you get to it now?
google it, i believe it still exists
webmessenger.msn.com but I use meebo.com
It sent me to a list of my hotmail contacts
yep.. msn web messenger is what i'm using. often shortened to msn...
I just use Pidgin, I rarely even check-in to the Hotmail account
How do you know who is online?
Who's online? What is the name of the guy online
I thought Who was buffering
they are usually green.. people ofline are red.
*offline
It has told me to open messenger on the action bar. Is this where arnie drinks?
This makes no sense, no wonder we stopped using it!
I'll leave now or my eyes will get square... (and my stomach will eat me). See you tomorrow.
I have 2 colums, 1 has photos and their email addresses, the other is titled network, and everyone's says "in messenger"
Take care!
night!
night.
Looked in the dictionary but there is no definition
Night Guille
Unfortunatly, it isn’t the only motorsport death to occur this weekend, an Italian co-driver, Flavio Gugelmini, died in the ERC Rally of Bulgaria {Comment #870}
A really bad day for motor sport, then :( Condolences to the Gulgelmini family and the ERC.
