Hi there. Hope you’re having a great week! I spent the weekend celebrating my sister in law’s birthday in Odense, then geocaching in a forest with some friends. We left a trackable coin in a cache which is already on the move – we can’t wait to see where it ends up!
Right, so F1’s back on this week and the teams are heading to Spa as we speak. Check out the Tweets of the Week and Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings to see what else they have been up to. Also, listen to the Debrief if you haven’t already!
Jonny Noble has uploaded a great video by Shell to Google+ of an interview with John Surtees and Fernando Alonso about Spa – some great footage and very interesting!
There isn’t much more in the way of F1 news – there’s some stuff about it being 20 years since Michael Schumacher’s first race, which Peter Sauber apparently paid Schumi’s appearance fee to Eddie Jordan so he could get the drive and Schumi didn’t know about it until 2006… I am sure EJ will be crowing about it all weekend!
Red Bull went to Austin, Texas to do a demo run on the Grand Prix circuit – yes, you read that correctly! It currently looks like this from the air, but that didn’t stop DC trying to drive it! Also, check out this surreal F1 Big Picture – I’m surprised the horses didn’t get freaked out by all the noise!
If you need an F1 fix and like Lego, then check out this awesome stop-motion video – it’s very amusing! Or check out this homage to the Nurburgring as a slot car track…
Lou’s taken some fab pics from the WSbR at Silverstone last weekend – check them out! She’ll also be happy to tell you that Jenson is going to take part in the Race of Champions at the end of the year…
Finally, here’s an awesome combination of the Muppets and OK Go singing the Muppet Show Theme song – the ending is especially funny :D
So that’s all from me – I’m going bowling and then for a curry on Thursday, having some friends over for dinner Friday and then it’s F1 THIS WEEKEND! I’m glad that the break is nearly over and that it’s Spa next – can you believe it’s been nearly a year since the awesome Sidepodspa trip? I can’t… we had such an awesome time and I have so many happy memories and stories. Just another sign of what a great place this site is and how awesome the community are :)
See you in the comments!
Sorry if this is stupid but what is a geocoin? The link didn't really enlighten me. Is it like those numbers they pin on animals and you're supposed to report sightings of the animals with the tags?
oh small victory, overnight IT have updated my work PC from IE6 to IE7. At least now my own companies website doesn't tell me my browser is unsupported :)
Love the video. Shame that they are re-writing history. I seem to remember that Ferrari ran with Agip in preference to Shell for many years but Alonso's comments suggest that never happened. Great to see him looking natural and comfortable dealing with Surtees
Not just me then. Geo-caching is hiding stuff for people to try to find so presumably a geocoin is a thing designed to be used for this purpose and it is somehow trackable either by people logging in somewhere and saying so or by some more advanced technological means
YAY. I hear IE7 is very advanced
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocoin
my other work computer has IE8, gosh I'm spoiled ;)
That is really advanced
Just wondering, since I saw his name come up today when I was at Sunderland Uni, but who is the Steven who works at Autosport?
erm.......... didn't it give his surname?
http://twitter.com/#!/teamanglais ?
Nah, they only showed his first name and an interview with Brendan Hartley in Autosport.
But thanks, I've never come across him before.
Kind of like those tags on bird's legs then :D
I have only seen him and Stuart talking on twitter
Except you can't hide the birds in holes in trees and expect them to stay there for weeks
Isn't that kind of the point though that you track them from place to place.
Seems to be
works for team lotus now.
You could glue them down like in the twits.
I had no idea
twits?
Bah, they need to update them slides.
They even had the Newcastle Vipers still in, rookie error.
Book. Roald Dahl. I'm sure that involved supergluing birds.
hehe
http://uk.linkedin.com/in/anglais
Woohoo for my memory!
"Mr. and Mrs. Twit are two ugly, smelly, nasty, stupid people who spend their lives playing nasty tricks on each other. They also enjoy being cruel to animals, which they do by luring birds to glue-smothered trees so they can be baked into bird pie"
They put that in a children's book
Cheers mate.
I'm not making it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twits
Gold star for remembering
he wasn't a very nice man (supposedly): http://kottke.org/11/06/the-unpleasant-roald-dahl
Sounds like a real charmer. Without getting into politics many, many people were sympathetic to the Nazi cause
In the end the people stand on their head's for too long and they squash themselves. Looking back, it is an odd choice for a children's story.
heh
There were some very odd children's books written in the past
I used to obsessively read "A Little Princess" when I was young which is about a tormented orphan.
cheers for the daily mr gavin. i have found a site that would've been suitable for linkage too. not sure if this has made a daily post before, but i like everything on it:
http://www.skrekkogle.com/
That is interesting. Printing in chocolate powder sounds interesting although I guess the ink would be licked off all the time. Printing with dog ashes is an unusual thought to come up with.
I love the solitaire sculpture though
am in the midst of learning some new tools, and used some old franck footage to practice with. think it came out okay:
http://t.co/BMhuUn6
christine was hiding somewhere behind the pillar to the left during filming :)
Looks good. Hiding behind a pillar is good idea. You never know when a racing driver may pounce
he does look vicious :)
Apologies. On second look, the link doesn't say much I suppose. Not trying to make anyone look stupid or anything. I just wrote the Daily too late and didn't have enough brain left to proof read it properly.
So Geocaching is like treasure hunting with GPS. The treasure is usually a small tupperware box with some trinkets in it. One of the things you may find in there is a geocoin. This is a coin with a tracking number, kinda like a courier parcel has.
The idea is that somebody will take it and place it somewhere else in another package. When they do this, they are supposed to log it on the geocaching website so I can track where it goes.
There is another type of object called a Travelbug which works the same way, but usually has a mission - for example to get to a certain destination.
Geocaching was certainly a lot of fun and with the iPhone/iPad App it's very cool to track things on a map. You end up going somewhere you wouldn't normally go and it's usually a nice walk ;)
Morning all,
Some changes at the management at Team Lotus - Riad Asmat moves up.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/08/24/asmat-gets-a-promotion/
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Oooohh...Pippa Mann is to be a guest on the Simon Mayo show on BBC Radio 2 tonight between 6.30-7pm
Loyalty pays, indeed.
Morning all.
Morning Journeyer
Good morning everyone.
I am on my vacations, so I am not online as much as I use to.
How are you all? :)
HI Marti,
All good. Hope you are enjoying your holidays
it conveniently ignores the fact that during the war when he wasn't shooting down Nazis in the RAF, he was working with MI6 and producing Allied propaganda. He might have been anti-Israli but he wasn't a Nazi-sympathasizer
Also this is printed after his death. We don't know why that person thinks that about him or what their agenda is/was.
Besides, I like his books for what they were, not for who he was.
Nice... Just heard it's looking more and more likely that Seb Bourdais will be IndyCar full time from next year, only stepping back to LMP at Le Mans and a couple of other events.
Now we just need Paul Tracy...
Tracy has pretty announced his retirement for the end of 2012, so I believe he's trying to get some funding on the back of his "farewell tour".
Pretty much like what Bobby Rahal did in 1998 (only Rahal did everything with a lot more panache and intelligence).
I just wanna see 'em crash and fight. It would be great for the series!
i love that lotus give this kind of insight:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnFtVsf6M3o
group CEO and he's sat on the floor in front of an f1 car :)
Again.
;)
Battles for 15th tend to get less press.
We'll see ;)
Meh, I saw a prince stand in line for the lunch queue a couple of weeks ago ;)
youtube or it didn't happen ;)
Did he have a guitar with him? Sing "Purple Rain" for the rest of the canteen?
Didn't happen then!
No, he was wearing a fireproof suit as he was driving a race car later :)
Oh right? Did he win?
Nah he lost to Emanuele Pirro, it was a pro-am race. He had a Mk.I Lotus Cortina and Pirro had a lovely orange and black BMW 2002.
Oh. So he didn't party like it was 1999 then? Sign o' the times, I suppose...
If anyone wants to chat to the Andrettis they're doing a live chat Saturday at 9am PST (GMT-8?).
http://indyreg.cloudapp.net/
The best part is 7 seconds in - check out the guy passing by in the background. Nothing flashy about this video. :D
:D
:) :)
DaveFurst: So, #IndyCar Loudon results upheld-Ruling is spinning happened before green came out.
So... they are saying it was yellow, then Danica spun, then Race Control went green............ There's a head on shot that disputes this though. It was shown in slow motion on Speed TV the other day.
And the video confirms that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNTNb2-eQUA
Race Control only control the circuit lights and the driver panels, not the flags. This is crazy - they set a new precedent that conflicts with their own rules.
Firstly, I think it's for the best that the original finishing order as announced on the day is upheld - if only for the fans that attended the race, but....
Race Control have just introduced a brand new rule that goes against their own rules. That's just utterly stupid.
As per Marshall Pruett's piece on Speed when he went through the rule book after the race:
Watch them contradict it anyway the next chance they get.
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
Which we didn't see. The TV graphics showed a lead change before they called out the caution, which does make you wonder.
There's a separate angle that solely looks at the circuit head on. It clearly showed the yellow light coming off for 2.8 seconds, signalling green flag conditions.
This is rather unfortunate: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14653371
Bring back the shuttles!!
"where is it?"
*shrugs*
thank heavens it wasn't a shuttle
the autosport podcast is making a comeback:
@glenn_autosport: Just finished recording the first AUTOSPORT podcast for more than two years. Look out for it on the website later in the week
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/belgium-2011-race-information
Senna ticket, purchased! w00t!
Will they wait two years to make a subsequent one?
:D
I have a question: has anyone here heard of Racing Underground's successor, and more importantly, does anyone have an invite to it?
Yes and yes.
Racingfor.me
:)
i assume it's in response to motorsport's show becoming popular and getting names like murray to come into the studio. i doubt they want to do one, but they have to react.
Didn't want to name the URL here. :) Will send you an email.
And sent.
Sorted.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

what happened to the old site?
Basically the owners parted ways because some of them didn't have time anymore. So the others who did started a new site.
Official but saying little: http://www.lotusrenaultgp.com/6308-Bruno-Senna-to-race-for-Lotus.html

got ya.
The guy who ran the old one runs the new one though..
Pippa Mann is on Radio 2 now with Simon Mayo, if anyone is interested
Is it time to lawyer up? Looks like the CRB may be needed for the first time in a while.
Note the lack of any PR statement from Nick.

Hello :)
How are you all?
evening guys :)
yaaaay for Bruno!
I bring a PING with me to:

i thought he was on a race-by-race contract actually
you shoulda gone to spa this year too :)
if only :(
Especially as the first three retirees from last years race were rubens, bruno and jenson!

Ooooh a month today I'm moving to Southampton. If only to put a damper on things though, I've just received an invoice for my fees....
You should've never looked at the invoice. if you never looked at it, it never happened :)
That rocket and variations of it have been used for decades. They very rarely go wrong. The good thing with this kind of failure is that had their been a crew on board they would almost certainly have been fine
you might need to look away when the bailiffs turn up too
homer simpson taught me of this method, so it must be a useful technique
it was on TV? it must be true!
If I throw it away, can I pretend it never happened?
If you close the windows and doors, they're not allowed to come in :D :D
but you'd then have to pretend you never threw it away too, and then it gets very, very complicated
Post it to my dad then? :)
You knew that invoice was coming. I am sure you will be glad that it is getting closer
It's frankly terrifying!! Expensive Nick holiday abandoned in favour of more time working like a loony!!
It will be worth it in the end
ah... an SEP or Somebody Else's Problem
Kimi Raikkonen has had his first Peugeot test and Franck was there too
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93911
Wow, he is literally doing every racing series going.
He said a few days ago that he didn't just want to do Le Mas but wanted to do a few more races in the series. Maybe he has his eye on the endurance championship. I can't think of another F1 champion who ever won that one too
i was saying at the weekend that i'd love to see him do Le Mans. in my ideal world i want montoya to be his co-driver, probably with villeneuve as the third
the car wouldn't last long enough between those two to get Kimi a stint.
That would be an interesting combination. It's a shame F1 drivers don't do Le Mans any more. Imagine Alonso and Massa leading Ferrari teams with Hamilton, Button and di Resta in a McLaren and Schumacher, Rosberg and co in Mercs.
Ickx would be closest to bagging the pair I think
Probably because Bernie loves having races on the same day as it.
perhaps the FIA will sort that out
Probably. He was runner up to Rindt in 1970 and was in the awful position that Rindt had been killed at Monza and he was the only person who could score more points. Naturally he wanted to win a title but to take a title from a dead man would have been difficult
I hope so. If they want to build the endurance championship they need Le Mans to be unchallenged. Equally having Monaco and Indy 500 on the same day is crazy
some wanted to give it to Ickx anyway, even with the second highest points
That is more like endurance rules. Like Le Mans where you can have done 10 laps more than any other car but if you are not running at the end you are nowhere
but in F1, it ignored the fact drivers had been champion without competing in every race plenty of times before. it was strange thinking
I guess the idea of a dead champion was not acceptable to some people.
ouchy!
@anngilmour Renault have taken Nick Heidfeld off the drivers page of their website
missing page: http://www.lotusrenaultgp.com/4089-Nick-Heidfeld.html
They don't hang about. I guess that means there is no way he will be back
I don't think I like Renault anymore.
That's properly rude. What did he ever do to them?
brings a whole new meaning to quick nick

set fire to two cars? :-)
Charming
I would think after the car tried to burn him they'd owe him something.
:D
how mean. but I've just learnt that his middle name is Lars...
heh!
he wears size 5 and half shoes?!?
Bet he never had Damon Hill's problem then
michael schumacher driving into him?
Damon has huge feet. 11 or 13 or something ludicrous. So in some cars he had to cut the toes of his boots to get his feet in the pedal box and not have his foot get jammed
That's not that big.
Really.
It isn't.
I don't have ludicrous sized feet!
Are UK and US sizes the same because Damon has biiiiig feet?
They're close. My cycling shoes are:
UK: 12.5
US: 13
EU: 48
Then you have ludicrously big feet. Do't you bang your toes off the road when you pedal?
hahaha, no. Probably because my bike is gigantic, too :)

I blame DC for his demise - a marketing nightmare if even the commentators can't get his name right :P
I know what you all want to read at this hour, some serious stuff involving Turkish match-fixing... http://northernwaffler.wordpress.com/2011/08/24/the-way-fixing-works/
I am sure even DC can pronounce 404
Exactly
I was either going to moan about UEFA, or moan about Renault. UEFA is so much more fun.
There is a lot more to moan about when it comes to UEFA
No driver on the grid is safe if they're relying on DC to be able to pronounce their names
Unless their name is Red Shouldered Blackbird.
:D
While we are throwing non-racing stuff out there... A blog post about filming a comedy tv show with DSLR:

NYT NEWS ALERT: Steve Jobs Is Stepping Down as Chief Executive of Apple
Whoa.
He has decided it is time to be emperor of the world
*faints*
say wha?!
*lays down*
http://twitter.com/#!/9GAG/status/106451420911374336
"Steve Jobs says he would like to serve as Chairman of the Board; Recommends Tim Cook as CEO of Apple"
Cook is the CFO?
full statement:
--
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve
-- ENDS
So it's his health, then?
I think he's earned a break. I may be the only person in the world who isn't like: "This is huge!"
You have to wonder if Apple will fair better than the last time he left. Apple shares have been such a good investment for ages but I guess they will fall short term.
Still the new guy has $76 billion in the bank so he can afford a few mistakes
gotta be.
The only person in our house anyway :)
*Checks email.... nothing. Hmmm
Wonders what this will do to the share price...
ha!
He should have checked with you first, Jeremy. I'm disappointed in him. :)
I thought it was expected anyway.. whenever he popped up on stage somewhere it was all like "wow what's he doing there, he's not well enough".
so long as he remains on the board, it'll be fine. i hope.
Maybe the new guy will fix Final Cut.
...and logic.
Exactly that. He came back and then went on leave again, I didn't think we were expecting him back again.
Well yes. Although, Logic has always been evil. FCP has just become so :)
I'm pretty sure that the only thing that will change is public opinion
oh gosh, really hope he's alright :(
it was fine before apple bought it. maybe we can get our software back :)
5 years ago it would have been hard to imagine Jobs not running Apple and Bill Gates not running Microsoft
Good or bad?
Microsoft's improved immeasurably after Gates left..
He has been really ill for a long time. I am sure he will be much healthier if he does not have a huge business to worry about
Never! You'll take what you're given, and you'll like it!
(Not an official Apple statement) :P
:)
*hugs*
And you'll buy the next version and like it better, even if you don't need it, and get your name engraved on it.
He won't stop until he dies. Titles on paper mean nothing.
I told HR to hire you!
it means a no-show at the iphone 5 conference won't be the headline, so that iphone can be the headline.
haha!
They missed out. :)
I think they should call the next one 4J (for Jobs). It would be similar sounding to 4G...
Twit is live on Steve Jobs' resignation

oh, I like that.
@Reuters Reuters Top News
FLASH: Apple shares fall 7 percent after CEO Jobs announces resignation
Only to be expected
Maybe shares will drop a little until the next new product and people will see it's still Apple goodness, then they'll go back up again.
The company finances are so good there is no real reason for the shares to have a real problem. It is the problem with one person being seen as being so important to a company.
That's what I'm banking on :p
I must disappear. Have a happy Thursday :)
Bye Jeremy
Good luck reconfiguring yourself elsewhere.
Adios amigo.
