Hello Sidepodcast fans, it is Tuesday the 23rd August 2011. Formula One's summer break is almost at end, this weekend will see racing at Spa Francorchamps for the Belgium Grand Prix. There are only 9 races of the 2011 season left now, scary thought eh?

They were in Austin over the weekend. This article says the Cruise run was on the 15th, so at least they didn't have to clean the mud off for him :)

True, but let's be honest. This isn't a total shock "Quick Nick" has, for the most part, been anything but.

How Senna will do is a mystery. The Hispania was hardly a standard barer and Senna only had a single 90 minute session since his single day test in February.

Now's a good time to find out, I think. I reckon they've realized Kubica won't be able to return this year, and they already be too far behind Mercedes on pace to catch them... for 4th in the WCC, which isn't that much of a prize, to be honest. Best find out how good your 3rd driver really is now (and dump him for Grosjean if he really isn't any good).

Which is why they need to find out now if Senna is any good. That said, given that all 3 drivers probably have a strong link to Gravity (financially or otherwise), if Senna turns out to be quick, this may become a difficult decision for them.

I think they'll end up with Grosjean anyway. I'm surprised Senna is in that car - it can only be because as Joe says, they have new Brazilian sponsors.

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

It was their headline story. They spent an entire hour with Marshall Pruett discussing it in sheer disbelief. Can't say I'm surprised.

A few seem to believe this gives IndyCar some headlines and that is good, but for many it is just - rightly - embarrassing.

And the right man to work with Brundle after the professional commentators failed miserably. He was the man who off his own back started negotiations with Adrian Newey.

    Yet still people under-rate DC?

agreed. his red bull bias in 2010 was hard to swallow, but i think he's learned from that. even he doesn't rate himself as a quick driver though :)

I was thinking more about what he does out of the car. I think his reputation as a crasher is unfair. It was only at the end of his career that he was involved in a few collisions and unfortunately that is what is remembered. For most of his career he was rarely involved in accidents even if things like Spa 1998 stick in the memory

I always thought Red Bull must've kept him on for a reason, because his driving had got relatively bad for a while there. I'm sure he can take a large amount of credit for improving the car/s over a few years.

There was a theory put around by 'people in the know' that when he retired he was going to be team principal. Of course by that time the team had improved a lot and Horner's position was a lot more secure.

It was enough for me sitting here to go..."what's that?" and then I was like..."um, I wonder if that's an earthquake??" and there was a helicopter going over at the same time, so I was wondering how it was possible that it could be strong enough to shake the ground, and it couldn't, so I guessed that the bump bump bump feeling was an earthquake, after hearing about the one in Colorado today, but, like everything else, I had to check twitter and the news to see what my reality was. ;)

It's a significant quake, but more importantly, I think, is that east coast buildings don't have anywhere near the codes that west coast buildings do. We don't usually get quakes.

I'm not sure. He's looked for me before. BA are normally stupidly expensive. I'm not sure exactly how they end up with any customers.....

Exactly. I can understand if you want to avoid Ryanair or whatever but if I can fly on Emirates for half a BA fare.... That isn't a budget airline.

  • Kai23/08/2011 at 19:30

Just back from my venture Outside..the report is: clear skies, sunny, perfect temperature. The ground didn't shake that I could tell, but I did see a school bus checking out it's route, so that is always a sign of impending doom.

i wondered what the reaction to peter windsor returning to speedtv might be. here's the very first comment after his debut:

As some one who had the distinct displeasure of dealing directly with Windsor during his USF1 scam I can tell you he totally screwed people to give up their jobs in England and elsewhere to come to Charlotte for nothing. Not to mention the total fraud to the Argentine government of some $800,000 plus. Maybe SpeedTV should hire Bernie Madoff too for his financial insider information.

Something tells me Oriol Servia is not to confident...

“At the end though the rule book states very clearly that (the chief steward) can do what he wants and that was (Barnhart’s) final statement to the panel.”

Aye - I'd be stunned if the panel do anything. There will be some empty words about not doing it again and then Race Control will attempt to sweep the incident under the carpet.

I don't see how they can change anything. The whole thing was a farce but you can't have someone overtaking the leader before the line under yellow and being declared the winner

  • Steven Roy23/08/2011 at 20:32

But surely they can't pass till the line? Or are they saying they overtook before the line and the race finished at the line after being green for 3 seconds?

Not that many people here have seen it, oddly enough. They've only really started taking notice of it now that other countries have liked it.

  • Alison23/08/2011 at 20:36

Yeah that is a bit irritating.

I couldn't ever watch it live, I get too distracted and realise I have no idea whats happening and have to rewind it. I didn't realise how often I play something on iplayer then change the screen and leave it going....

  • Leigh O'Gorman23/08/2011 at 20:39

the track goes live when they exit the final corner

From the head on replay, the circuit was green for approximately 2.8 seconds, during which Hunter-Reay bogged down and Servia and Dixon passed him.

The yellow came out (which is only officially defined by the track lights) again just as Servia reached the start / finish line, which is the crux of their argument.

Servia technically started lap 216 as the leader, but whether they recognise that lap in race control is another matter. Unfortunately the rules are so horribly ambiguous, which has led to this disaster.

I still can't believe there is a rule in IndyCar that essentially says "all incidents or situations can be ruled at Race Control's discretion."

No, we learned not to take anything that it was doing for granted, even if we wanted it wrapped up and it wasn't. That was just part of it not being a typical show. Nothing was as it seemed, and in my own mind it was how real investigations go - wrong turns, red herrings, misguided clues, the whole thing. We can't wait for next season.

  • Leigh O'Gorman23/08/2011 at 20:58

Brazil 2003 I suppose - and despite F1 having a proper procedure for dealing with it

It should have a walker and collect social security from the looks of it. I think it has grandbaby DVD players.

I'm mainly excited that if they're reshowing series 1 on the beeb, they're probably winding up to showing the second season :D

Standing ovation from several of the stands as well

Poor Pat ( always in a hat) at work still doesn't understand why I call him 'Pat-Reek' occasionally, even when I add 'Carpont-E-A' on the end. Silly non-racing people :)

I'm on sidepodcastdaily.com, using Chrome, and when it does it's dimming thing the panda doesn't show up for me. Was wondering if it was a bug or intentional.

Did you feel the second quake?

Only a 2.8 so you could probably have been at the epicentre and not noticed

Nope, no spidey senses about it, either.
