Hello there, it is Monday, the start of another week, and this is your daily post to kick things off. F1 will return next weekend, so the summer break is over, the waiting is almost done, things will start kicking into gear once more.

Red Bull got some practice in already, heading over to Austin for some filming.

Red Bull get an early taste of the Austin action

Meanwhile, here are a few bits and bobs you may have missed:

  • The long-awaited F1 Debrief finally arrived, with talk of football and stickers, handbrake turns and rookie racers, cuddly bears and unhealthy debates.
  • Over the weekend, Rob Smedley appeared on BBC Tees and talked about his future with or without Ferrari, and plugged the charity dinner he'll be speaking at.
  • Lukeh is in the midst of a 7 Days of F1 special to celebrate the return of the racing, and the latest post involved the music associated with the sport.
  • VivaF1 have posted their latest Caption Competition which sees what appears to be a spot of arm wrestling going on in the paddock.
  • In two non-F1 bits, I really loved this column from David Mitchell about when less is more, and I also blogged over the weekend about the Doodle Revolution.

Hope everyone has a great week, I won't sign off in my standard way, as I probably won't see you in the comments, but never fear, I am always watching! Mwa ha ha.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Where was the Austrian Grand Prix held on this day in the mid-1960s - a track that only ever hosted one F1 event?

The driver line-up at the Goodwood Revival is quite nice.

Touring Car talent will be campaigning hard in 1960s saloons in the St Mary’s Trophy race, including DTM star (and eight-time Le Mans winner) Tom Kristensen, four-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, and BTCC legends John Cleland, Anthony Reid, Paul Radisich, Darren Tuner, Alec Poole, Tony Dron and Patrick Watts.

These tin top racers will be joined by Scandinavian rallying greats Stig Blomqvist and Rauno Aaltonen, plus ex-Grand Prix stars Martin Brundle, Emanuele Pirro, Jochen Mass, Derek Bell, Richard Attwood, Tiff Needell, Desire Wilson, Brian Redman, Jackie Oliver, Vern Schuppan and Arturo Merzario, who are all sure to entertain the Revival spectators.

    ...

Expect to see Red Bull F1 team principal Christian Horner, Red Bull Chief Technical Director Adrian Newey, ex-Ferrari F1 driver Gerhard Berger, Jaguar’s 1988 Le Mans winner Andy Wallace, and Peugeot’s endurance ace Nicolas Minassian. Goodwood stalwarts Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Murray Walker and Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams will also be in attendance.

Motorcycling heroes will include Isle of Mann TT stars Charlie Williams, Trevor Nation, Mick Grant, Ian Simpson, Chas Mortimer, Cameron Donald, Stuart Graham, Stan Woods and Keith Amor, plus World and British Superbike riders Andrew Pitt and Michael Rutter.

i think it was pamela who noticed that if the clouds rolled into a certain point on the horizon we had approximately 5 minutes to put on raincoats and prepare. :)

Must sort a ticket out - and clothes. You can't show in regular clothes - the mechanics tut at you.

Yeah it'll be good to see it and say 'I've been there!". I'm quite sad not to be driving over though, now I know roughly where it is it would be a lot easier.. But mainly I want to walk around the track again and have some Woopy Snacks. :)

I miss the Belgian waffles with a dollop of chocolate

  • Pat W22/08/2011 at 15:12

They put the DRS zone on the hill to Les Combes? That's the part of the track that doesn't need it!

Is there anywhere else straight enough for it though? Blanchimont, maybe, but that's a long bend.

We had some lovely fish and chips at Silverstone, mind you they were really expensive

  • Lynch22/08/2011 at 15:16

... Yeh, i have never gone in "costume" as such, but if I went with a whole group of people that would be quite fun... but as long as you wear tasteful things you should be OK, ie. not football or F1 shirts... last time I wore a black Aston Martin polo shirt... not sure what this years attire will be yet... but yes, you have to have shirt and the to enter the paddock... (done that a few times)

  • Pat W22/08/2011 at 15:16

Maybe on the pit straight, or coming out of La Source

Everything was expensive at Silverstone. I got a plain burger, with chips and tea for £9.20 !!

Yeah that's pretty much what I paid for fish and chips and tea. Captive audience. Was far too hungry to have a little snack though.

Oh yes (but without the oignons).

And of course the currywurst outside the gate..

    #sidepodsubsea

Sidepodcast always embraces new stuff and video feeds so how about live video from a mile and a half under the sea. It's from a research vessel whchi just now is checking an internet cable near a subsea volcano but is going to go on and look at undersea volcanoes. I just realised the word volcanoes has canoes in it. I will never again look at a volcano without picturing it shooting out canoes with the lava.

Anyway this thing is showing live footage for the next several weeks and when it is not live it is running re-runs. Sometimes the sea bed is flat and boring and sometimes its like having an aquarium on your screen.

    It's like sidepodspace underwater.

it can't get much worse than this to be honest: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/daily-thread-comment-trends

people said they wanted a place to keep the community going, so that's what we're going to do. we don't have time to keep up the work we have been doing so we need to shift legal, moral, whatever responsibility away so that we don't have to worry about reading every comment.

we can't invent hours in the day, so this is the best we can do i think.

They haven't particularly, no. I think it's just the nature of the community now, less time, less inclination for daily chatter.

Explanations don't matter really, we just want to keep on moving forward :)

Doesn't need to be about Silverstone as such but maybe highlight a couple of photos and explain the thinking behind the composition, there must be many speople interested in getting better snaps without having all the equipment?

  • Mr C22/08/2011 at 19:10

Explanations don't matter really, we just want to keep on moving forward :)

no, no. go to the new domain to comment on sidepodcast. it replaces realtime and will include comments from all threads.

  • Journeyer22/08/2011 at 19:13

If you are to send people away chatting elsewhere won't that make the main site die

I think as long as the articles keep pinging into the new domain, both sites should be fine. Might make off-topic discussions more likely in the daily domain, but probably not by much.

No. I have a realtime doohickey open and a new site that looks more or less the same.

Oh I see, well I've been commenting exclusively on the new site since I got here. I always look at the homepage before I go in the comments so I must have clicked the link there. It seems to be working totally fine.

I do have comments notification just not where I can see it. The black box pops up in the top right above the filter comments box. But this is scrolled off the top of the screen so I cannot see it. With /realtime the box floats so that it is always visible in the top right of the window.

It's a good one to start with and lets you show your work as you like. I am sure Lukeh can assist in putting the site together

hopefully. trying a few trials of premade portfolio sites/layouts to see which one works best. hopefully i'll find one that's not too expensive.

  • Kai22/08/2011 at 22:50

Jeremy, I know very little about this type of thing. When you publish from iWeb, do you have to buy hosting somewhere? I guess I'm wondering how iWeb is different than Squarespace.

  • Steven Roy22/08/2011 at 22:51

I mentioned this earlier but now that there are actually people around I tought I would mention it again. It is a feed from an ROV looking at the sea floor 8000 feet down. Just now they are checking an internet cable but they are going to go on and look at some subsea volcanoes. Last night one of the scientists popped up and gave some commentary and explained what they were doing. It's a bit like having an aquarium on your screen except some times there are no fish and at other times there are lots.

Jeremy, I know very little about this type of thing. When you publish from iWeb, do you have to buy hosting somewhere? I guess I'm wondering how iWeb is different than Squarespace.

You used to be able to buy MobileMe from Apple, and then point your purchased domain name to that for hosting.

Now you have to sort it yourself (unless you already have MobileMe).

We are waiting for Apple to release icloud, to see what can be done with that

  • Kai22/08/2011 at 22:56

Now you have to sort it yourself (unless you already have MobileMe).

the cat brought a mouse in, let it go and my parents went to sleep. so.. i suppose i should. That cat's sleeping now too!

the cat brought a mouse in, let it go and my parents went to sleep. so.. i suppose i should. That cat's sleeping now too!

The cat probably thinks it is entertaining for you to chase mice.

  • Kai22/08/2011 at 22:58

So I could have done all this for free?

*please say no, please say no*

  • Jeremy22/08/2011 at 22:59

I've already bought a year on Squarespace. :(

It depends if you have to use their tools to build the site, or if you can use iWeb and then upload to them.

I haven't tried their tools, but I would hope it would be as easy as iWeb.

  • Jeremy22/08/2011 at 23:00

*please say no, please say no*

Sorry for not being here to give you advice earlier :(

Square Space is probably a better long term solution anyway...

  • Kai22/08/2011 at 23:01

I haven't tried their tools, but I would hope it would be as easy as iWeb.

nooooo it's not. Not nearly as easy. There's SO much more flexibility and intuitive drag and drop loveliness on iWeb! I didn't realize how restrictive the templates are on Squarespace until I just watched the iWeb tutorial. gah! I spent 2 months learning how to do what I wanted to do on Squarespace.

  • guille230622/08/2011 at 23:01

I used to pay $30 per year to own a domain name, and have it forwarded to my MobileMe iWeb stuff so you couldn't see that it had anything to do with MobileMe. Add the cost of MobileMe at $119 AUD per year, and it was a very cheap web solution.

    Cheaper in USD :P

i haven't seen any of our huge ones yet.. but give it time and i'm sure they'll find me. They usually do. I'm living with my girl friends this year at uni, no idea what i'm going to if there is a spider in my room now!

Is it? I thought everything was more expensive in USD.

I paid $240 for the middle pricing package on Squarespace.

    It's not your fault.
