Hello there, it is Monday, the start of another week, and this is your daily post to kick things off. F1 will return next weekend, so the summer break is over, the waiting is almost done, things will start kicking into gear once more.
Red Bull got some practice in already, heading over to Austin for some filming.

Credit: Red Bull F1 Spy
Red Bull get an early taste of the Austin action
Meanwhile, here are a few bits and bobs you may have missed:
- The long-awaited F1 Debrief finally arrived, with talk of football and stickers, handbrake turns and rookie racers, cuddly bears and unhealthy debates.
- Over the weekend, Rob Smedley appeared on BBC Tees and talked about his future with or without Ferrari, and plugged the charity dinner he'll be speaking at.
- Lukeh is in the midst of a 7 Days of F1 special to celebrate the return of the racing, and the latest post involved the music associated with the sport.
- VivaF1 have posted their latest Caption Competition which sees what appears to be a spot of arm wrestling going on in the paddock.
- In two non-F1 bits, I really loved this column from David Mitchell about when less is more, and I also blogged over the weekend about the Doodle Revolution.
Hope everyone has a great week, I won't sign off in my standard way, as I probably won't see you in the comments, but never fear, I am always watching! Mwa ha ha.
Woopsy - in the wrong Daily. Anyhoo, shame about Alexander Rossi - disqualified from both FR 3.5 races this evening.
red bull have uploaded more pictures. i love this one!

Who has been driving the Red Bull?
DC is in austin, but i can't see from that shot if it's his lid?
Aha... http://yfrog.com/h77nkwhj
Looks like DC, ta.
that's him :)
For those who missed it before Grand Prix the Killer Years has just re-appeared on the iplayer.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
Morning all,
Joe's back - http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/08/22/blog-on-a-summary-of-august/
Raikkonen to Peugeot LMP1 programme eventually?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93874
We discussed it at the track yesterday, I didn't realise he was actually going to test one though! How will get on with having to share?
He may do a Levegh and try to win it solo.
He should be the Stig, he wouldn't need to try too hard ;)
:)
Jenson's going to be doing the Race of Champions, apparently...
wohooo!.. now if only it was at wembley again.. :(
The driver line-up at the Goodwood Revival is quite nice.
If Tom Kristensen doesn't crash like he did in CPH!
Love this tweet:
As someone said to me a few weeks back; "ahhh Spa, the only place where you get all four seasons at the exact same time"
*remembers back to last FP friday.. session 1 = rain, lunch time = windy and cold, session 2 = boiling hot, walk home = more rain... yep :)
During the 24 hours, it was funny watching "the experts" in the press office trying to predict the weather
:D
You could see the weather changing at different points around the track!
ha!
biblical, I tells ya
The weather at Spa predicts you
in some ways I'm pleased I'll be watching the race from my nice warm bed, electric blanket at the ready.
I'm also pleased I'm in bed right now and not on a stupid 24 hour flight :D
Yeaah! Got ma' ticket!
i think it was pamela who noticed that if the clouds rolled into a certain point on the horizon we had approximately 5 minutes to put on raincoats and prepare. :)
Must sort a ticket out - and clothes. You can't show in regular clothes - the mechanics tut at you.
Yeah it'll be good to see it and say 'I've been there!". I'm quite sad not to be driving over though, now I know roughly where it is it would be a lot easier.. But mainly I want to walk around the track again and have some Woopy Snacks. :)
I miss the Belgian waffles with a dollop of chocolate
They put the DRS zone on the hill to Les Combes? That's the part of the track that doesn't need it!
I only tried a bit of someone else's, I want my own.
Is there anywhere else straight enough for it though? Blanchimont, maybe, but that's a long bend.
We had some lovely fish and chips at Silverstone, mind you they were really expensive
... Yeh, i have never gone in "costume" as such, but if I went with a whole group of people that would be quite fun... but as long as you wear tasteful things you should be OK, ie. not football or F1 shirts... last time I wore a black Aston Martin polo shirt... not sure what this years attire will be yet... but yes, you have to have shirt and the to enter the paddock... (done that a few times)
Maybe on the pit straight, or coming out of La Source
Everything was expensive at Silverstone. I got a plain burger, with chips and tea for £9.20 !!
:o
Is it long enough though?
Currently checking out getting a driving license. My head is geared towards getting a bike if I can afford it.
the waffle I tried didn't grab me like the chips. Gosh I like chips.
Yeah that's pretty much what I paid for fish and chips and tea. Captive audience. Was far too hungry to have a little snack though.
this was tasty too #reminiscing
La Source to the bottom of the hill might be, but I suppose the airflow has to reconnect before they turn.
Oh yes (but without the oignons).
And of course the currywurst outside the gate..
last year i ate waaayy too many chips there. but goodness they were nice. When i was at Silverstone yesterday i was sad the chips were nothing like the Belgian ones :(

It could be from Blanchimont to Bus Stop.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

Evening. question, why isn't Christine in the comments today, is she doing something #hushhush ?
Nice... Harley?
#sidepodsubsea
Sidepodcast always embraces new stuff and video feeds so how about live video from a mile and a half under the sea. It's from a research vessel whchi just now is checking an internet cable near a subsea volcano but is going to go on and look at undersea volcanoes. I just realised the word volcanoes has canoes in it. I will never again look at a volcano without picturing it shooting out canoes with the lava.
Anyway this thing is showing live footage for the next several weeks and when it is not live it is running re-runs. Sometimes the sea bed is flat and boring and sometimes its like having an aquarium on your screen.
It's like sidepodspace underwater.
http://www.interactiveoceans.washington.edu/visions11/live
I haven't seen any comment to say so.
She has been tweeting F1 stuff but it looks like she will be in shock for the rest of the night
http://twitter.com/#!/sidepodcast/status/105702942547517440
And I should say she published an F1 Minute
http://www.f1minute.com/news/jenson-button-to-participate-in-the-race-of-champions
I am so tired today and it's not like we did loads of walking yesterday. I may have an early night
Being out in the sun all day can tyre you out
Maybe, I have the burnt nose to prove it too, any little bit of sun and I burn
I would have thought Mav's umbrella would have kept the sun off you
Yes I saw Pat published a photo, I hate having my photo taken so I've not looked (out of sight out of mind)
It is you 3 going under the bridge and almost the whole bridge is in the picture. You 3 are very small and shot from behind. No-one would recognise you
It's fine, just don't ask me to look
It was awesome being able to walk under bridge though and amazing how wide the track was at that point
was uploading these when they were discovered but if you weren't on twitter then you may not have noticed. So here is a link for the photos i took yesterday at WSR.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/sets/72157627493951878/
Please take a look, and as always comments and feedback is much appreciated. thanks!
I will have a look shortly
hehe no rush
They are brilliant Lou, the detail in some of the coseups is perfect
closeups
thanks Jackie, i really need a monopod, i had so many other possible shots that could have made a nice composition but holding the camera without support can sometimes equal horrible focus.. i was lucky with some of these :)
I also really like the one with the yellow blur at the chequered flag, I love those kind of shots where the action is frozen and the background blurred or vice versa
You read my mind, I was about to comment that this http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/6070379242/in/set-72157627493951878/ is my favourite
How crisply in shot is that flag too, very clever
some comment stats from christine: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/daily-thread-comment-trends
and we have a new domain: http://sidepodcastdaily.com/
we don't have a definitive plan, but we're just keeping you in the loop about what we're up to :)
Ohh?
Interesting..
Is this a reaction to Christine finding out how old she is? :)
christine knows how old she is. i didn't know how old i was.
now i'm sad.
See this is why CV's are rubbish
it's all good. just want a big disclaimer somewhere that says "this is nothing to do with christine".
probably you can talk about politics and stuff, because we don't have time to moderate as much.
worst day ever.
I mis-read her tweet stream
*bearhug*
aw thanks guys! am pleased you like it! it was a complete accident how it was only the flag that appeared in focus but i love it! happy accident :)
If you are to send people away chatting elsewhere won't that make the main site die
maybe some photos will cheer you up? - http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/sets/72157627493951878/
;)
yay! so who's blogging about there days and who's adding you pics to their site?
Would you like to write a guest post Lou giving hints on getting good shots?
i haven't got that far yet... lol i'm not sure if i have enough time to blog alot about the day but will certainly try. I am sorry about not getting a shot of the f1 car and the new buildings mr c. we headed there first and i'd just missed the f1 car run #poortiming
I also didn't manage to get any pics of drivers :(
it can't get much worse than this to be honest: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/daily-thread-comment-trends
people said they wanted a place to keep the community going, so that's what we're going to do. we don't have time to keep up the work we have been doing so we need to shift legal, moral, whatever responsibility away so that we don't have to worry about reading every comment.
we can't invent hours in the day, so this is the best we can do i think.
what, this is perfect!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/6069814047/in/set-72157627493951878
Have comments on blog posts increased, can that explain some of the drop on the dailies?
There's some great photos of the wing though. I love the ones that focus on the car and you have the lovely motion blurry wing looming over :)
not sure what i could say as i've only been there once.. but i could give it a go!
They haven't particularly, no. I think it's just the nature of the community now, less time, less inclination for daily chatter.
Explanations don't matter really, we just want to keep on moving forward :)
Maybe a post explaining what it was like for your first time shooting at silverstone?
hehe i wanted that, but with an f1 car in for you. didn't quite work out as i planned, but i (heart) silverstone.. :)
that's for my blog tho?
on f1minute, you won't see the difference. next silverstone story we'll make sure we use it.
#legend
<3 thank you
Doesn't need to be about Silverstone as such but maybe highlight a couple of photos and explain the thinking behind the composition, there must be many speople interested in getting better snaps without having all the equipment?
on the homepage, the realtime button now links to the new domain. we'll fix the new site so that it's a great place to comment as soon as we get a minute.
ahh, makes sense.
i shall have a think and write something up the moment i can :) thanks Jackie :)
Interesting place. Looks like a bit of a mess in IE9, though...
I totally understand the time it must take, it just seems a bit sad to split things up as it's difficult to comment at more than 1 place at a time
Hence the fixing it later.
no, no. go to the new domain to comment on sidepodcast. it replaces realtime and will include comments from all threads.
I think as long as the articles keep pinging into the new domain, both sites should be fine. Might make off-topic discussions more likely in the daily domain, but probably not by much.
aHA! perfect. :D
Oooh this new page is magical.
I love the tyre print shot. It looks old somehow
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/6069829933/in/set-72157627493951878/
This one would make a great background shot for a presentation by the driver/team. All the background blurred and the car in perfect focus in the corner.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/loujohnson/6069805979/in/set-72157627493951878/
so as I'm about to do so, is it worth mentioning in tommorow's daily? :)
It has Mr C code of course its magic
please, please do.
it's a slight of hand at the moment, but in future it'll be the community hub.
testing out the new site comments
Thanks Steven :) i've always wanted to do a tyre print shot.. and to my shock no one seemed to mind me going into the back of their garages to take pics.. :)
They probably don't get too many people asking to photograph their floor
Not complaining as I know you have said that it's just a simple start but should the page be about 2" deep?
i just opened the door, peaked round and walked in.. no one stopped me.. Mum did get a bit nervous tho.
#nothinglikef1
2" deep?
All I get on the new site is a bit that looks like a header and stops immediately below the bit with my send post details, there is a scroll bar on the right though
oh. gimmie a sec. browser?
Firefox (6 I think)
Getting it too on IE9.
raspberry to IE9 :P
It works like it should on my Chrome if that's helpful :D
You should try club racing. They will let you have all the access you could ever imagine and more
I'm busy getting very overexcited doing uni enrollment stuff online.
Looks great on Chrome
Test
Comment posted from new site on Chrome
you'll have to give it a hard refresh, but ff should now be ok.
Aren't you all using the new site? I guess I must have got here through a button on the homepage?
Test comment from IE9
Site looks good here too
No. I have a realtime doohickey open and a new site that looks more or less the same.
The only difference I can see with the new site is I have to refresh to get comments
Maybe just a slow refresh rate?
Oh I see, well I've been commenting exclusively on the new site since I got here. I always look at the homepage before I go in the comments so I must have clicked the link there. It seems to be working totally fine.
By that I mean no refreshing....
The hard refresh thing seems to have fixed it :)
it's all fine for me? no refreshing needed. works the same as doohickey on spc.
I have no received a comment on it without refreshing
Test from Firefox
w00t!
Well that's very weird. I'm obviously amazing and magical.
good stuff. we'll leave it like that for a bit and improve when we get the chance.
I don't have comments notification on any browser.
This is true.
I do have comments notification just not where I can see it. The black box pops up in the top right above the filter comments box. But this is scrolled off the top of the screen so I cannot see it. With /realtime the box floats so that it is always visible in the top right of the window.
Hard refresh worked here too. Hooray! :D
*high fives*
righto, i've broken enough stuff for today. shall be back in time for james' awesome daily post :)
no pressure then ;)
PIng: http://sidepodcast.com/post/tweets-of-the-week-im-gonna-party-like-its-1991
Apparently Bruno Senna has replaced Nick heidfeld?!
When?
BBC are reporting it
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/14624084.stm
love that they've tagged, "says Eddie Jordan" on the end.
To be fair, he got Michael Schumachers return right.
Normally EJ predicts what is going to happen and gets it wrong. Maybe he has decided he is better off reporting things that have already happened.
Surprised... but also not surprised. I wonder what Nick will do now.
I just tried Jody Scheckter's burgers. They are very nice.
Gaaahh, 'my mate eddie jordan says so' is not a news source!
My mate reckons Jarno Trulli's the best italian driver ever but BBC don't report it
I expected Heidfeld to be dropped so that Renault could test other drivers in case Kubica cannot drive next year
I expect they were expensive too
hello sidepodworld!
disappear into the distance...? or maybe drive for HRT
He'll manage to find himself in a Sauber no doubt.
At the original price they were.. discount due to short date. :)
Hi Guille
Sauber have signed their two drivers next year
Even more surprising is that EJ is titled 'Chief F1 Analyst'!
Evening all
Perfect.
Pfft, it'll mean nothing when they find Nick is on the market.
This is the man who ran a piece on how McLaren was in a total mess an hour before they won a race.
That used to be Murray's job
So does that mean Kobayashi will be out of a drive since Perez comes with the Mexican money
Most likely.
I can see a situation in which either Heidfeld or Kobayashi goes to Williams to replace Barrichello.
To throw another name in the mix, will Hymie end up at HRT if they really are serious aboutba Spanish driver and Disco Dan jabs his seat?
he can go back to test drive for pirelli
or better: he will become the PURE test driver and will be an invaluable asset with all his knowledge about the new engines, somehow finding a drive again for 2014...
history repeating itself...
In 2013 maybe, Williams can't afford to lose Rubens yet I think
And how to leap from a burning car [just in case]
ohhhh! #loufail .. just realised why the name 'daniel ricciardo' rang a bell yesterday XD
F1 can't afford to lose Rubens!
#overdramatic
:D
:D and to prove your point, Adam C tweeted:
the new site looks good on Chrome, but the double scrollbars are somewhat confusing.
Typical, reporting the reporting of hearsay from Coops
i recognised brandon hartley and Fauzy, and for knew Daniel obviously.. but just grouped them all together as being in the young drivers test. Then was googling pics of the drivers just in case i did get a pic of them and suddenly realised how stupid i had been. Least i had got plenty of pics of him XD
What are... scrollbars?
#LionJoke
Do they still need one?
I'm guessing this is because Bruno has proven he can drive up and down Eau Rouge while holding up his phone to record it at the same time. :D
the signed di grassi last month
If they are going to develop quali tyres and longer lasting race tyres they will
:)
JPM could probably do it holding a Curried Wurst but...
Maybe Renault wants him to do it again
Maybe the last Tea Boy kept dropping the biscuits
Not sure it's as aero-friendly as the onboard cameras, though. :D
Or just keep giving the teams 'development tyres' on Fridays
Awww poor Nick... Surely he's better than Bruno...??
But not cheaper. I think Renault are shopping at Lidl these days
Nick wins in the Beard contest definitely. But Bruno is ahead in the BFF category which is more important
Maybe, maybe not. They need to try other drivers in case Kubica doesn't recover
I don't think he's sooo much better to justify paying him instead of receiving Bruno's money. And even if there was no money involved, Steven is right, they need to test drivers for next year just in case
I'm pretty sure Bruno's just a bit lame... Can't they try some different drivers?
It does kinda ruin Grosjean's succession plans
Future in banking not looking so bright?
I'm sure Krusty the Klown will welcome him back with open arms if needs be
Logically they will try him first and if he does not perform they will try someone else
as a note, they come out only when you click 'read more'.
they also appear on FF6
finally got round the the section of my to do list which said 'buy domain name' :) yaayy!
Must be the day for new domains. What did you buy?
loujohnsonphoto.co.uk it wasn't too expensive and it's a start. will maybe change to .com or a shorter domain in the future. but i just needed something. now for the hard bit of creating a site! *eek*
It's a good one to start with and lets you show your work as you like. I am sure Lukeh can assist in putting the site together
I like it. congratulations! :)
hopefully. trying a few trials of premade portfolio sites/layouts to see which one works best. hopefully i'll find one that's not too expensive.
I am sure you will get something you like
:) lets hope so! it's all very exciting! :)
So have you seen sites that look the way you want yours to look?
i don't really know what i want mine to look like yet. all i know is i want it to look professional
#herownworstenemy
SO you want to play with some software and see what you can make?
yes i suppose. I'll stop playing around when i'm happy with it.. so don't expect a site soon :)
I'll give you a week
oh dear, pressure is on then!
:D
:)
Well, you did reveal the website name in public first, rookie mistake :)
Honestly, well done Lou. An important step
I tried to go to it and its not ready yet. #disappointed :(
hehe! well Steven asked! ;)
:) 2011-2012 is the year i set myself up properly. Now i have my domain, my business cards are almost done and i'm gonna create a site. no more wasting time! onwards and upwards!
hehe!
Sounds great
i hope i can make it a reality. I have a filofax now and everything! ;)
Is this the 1980s again?
Hey all... any recommendations for Android F1 apps?
Cool, good momentum :)
Well i wasn't around then .. so yep! that and it's more effective for me than ical :)
the f1.com app is very good for timings etc in my experience.
Paper can be useful
I am sure I have an original 1980s filofax round here somewhere
it's already become my hub of information. a place to store to do lists, what i'm up to, notes, inspiration and more!
you can make aeriplanes with it and you can pile it up and everything
Dunno if Guille is here, he was earlier, but he just finished his photos of the week
http://guille2306-pictures.blogspot.com/p/picture-of-week.html
potential #rankings points for Webber in BBC radio's cricket commentary box
http://twitpic.com/69zol7
loved this series!
Ping: http://guille2306-pictures.blogspot.com/p/picture-of-week.html
The last Pictures of the Week! I didn't realize until I was uploading the last photo today that it's been a year since I started this "project". I started it as a way to keep me shooting during the thesis, and it's nice to wrap it up just before the thesis defence :)
Some great pics in there
Too late. Pat already pinged it :)
Ah sorry to steal the thunder. :)
Really good shots in there. Unbelievable that it started with Spa, a whole year already.
:D
don't worry, I need to write faster :P
(twice pinged is better ;-) )
thanks!
so sad!! :( can't believe Spa was such a long time ago!
yeah, it feels like it was yesterday! (although I probably have six months erased from my memory now... #blamethethesis)
the first pictures on my backlog now are the ones from spa, so expect for them sometime in the next month (a year late)
Why not whip something up in iWeb on your Mac? You'll have a site in 15 minutes and it will give you ideas :)
There you go. You could have a website by midnight. :)
:D
oh goodness i don't know enough about that kinda thing.. it would take me a day or two to figure out how to use iweb!
hah!
Jeremy is an Apple genius. I am sure he could give you a few hints
It's drag and drop into templates. Honestly 15 minutes. Try the black theme
See. Easy
still inside the one week deadline steven gave you... ;-)
:D
I just watched the tutorial. I wish I had thought of using that instead of spending all summer on Squarespace! argh!
It looks sooo much easier to work with.
Here's an example from a friend of mine:
http://web.me.com/markcounsell
okay okay i'll try it to get some ideas :) the darkroom theme is nice.
Jeremy, I know very little about this type of thing. When you publish from iWeb, do you have to buy hosting somewhere? I guess I'm wondering how iWeb is different than Squarespace.
I mentioned this earlier but now that there are actually people around I tought I would mention it again. It is a feed from an ROV looking at the sea floor 8000 feet down. Just now they are checking an internet cable but they are going to go on and look at some subsea volcanoes. Last night one of the scientists popped up and gave some commentary and explained what they were doing. It's a bit like having an aquarium on your screen except some times there are no fish and at other times there are lots.
http://www.interactiveoceans.washington.edu/visions11/live
I thought there were enough Apple fans here that I could cut back my plugging :(
YAY
it's not gonna be published tonight tho! i'm trying to catch a mouse at the same time.
stupid cat.
I've already bought a year on Squarespace. :(
It seems that if you like lager beer, you have to tank us for it:
http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/08/22/7441151-beer-mystery-solved-yeast-idd
I live literally 15km away from a forest that it's infested by those orange things (we call it llao-llao)
I have a track pad, myself.
Your parents expect you to catch mice because the cat won't?
You used to be able to buy MobileMe from Apple, and then point your purchased domain name to that for hosting.
Now you have to sort it yourself (unless you already have MobileMe).
We are waiting for Apple to release icloud, to see what can be done with that
I already have MobileMe. *cue the Blues*
:D
Hah! :)
the cat brought a mouse in, let it go and my parents went to sleep. so.. i suppose i should. That cat's sleeping now too!
The cat probably thinks it is entertaining for you to chase mice.
So I could have done all this for free?
*please say no, please say no*
It depends if you have to use their tools to build the site, or if you can use iWeb and then upload to them.
I haven't tried their tools, but I would hope it would be as easy as iWeb.
Sorry for not being here to give you advice earlier :(
Square Space is probably a better long term solution anyway...
nooooo it's not. Not nearly as easy. There's SO much more flexibility and intuitive drag and drop loveliness on iWeb! I didn't realize how restrictive the templates are on Squarespace until I just watched the iWeb tutorial. gah! I spent 2 months learning how to do what I wanted to do on Squarespace.
I'm having problems to put this comment together with your old stories about spiders... ;-)
You're kind to say that.
If it's really free, then I can just play with it. No harm, no foul, and next summer I'll see what's available and maybe change over.
oh i HATE spiders... but i don't mind mice :)
There's one in here somewhere, big one. I waited until I finished doing my game scores to find and evict it.. now it has gone.
Not that I evicted it, it ran away before I went to find it..
I used to pay $30 per year to own a domain name, and have it forwarded to my MobileMe iWeb stuff so you couldn't see that it had anything to do with MobileMe. Add the cost of MobileMe at $119 AUD per year, and it was a very cheap web solution.
Cheaper in USD :P
i haven't seen any of our huge ones yet.. but give it time and i'm sure they'll find me. They usually do. I'm living with my girl friends this year at uni, no idea what i'm going to if there is a spider in my room now!
Keep a broom in your room! Best spider defense ever :)
A spider that is.
Found it.
De-fenestrated.
(went out the window)
Is it? I thought everything was more expensive in USD.
I paid $240 for the middle pricing package on Squarespace.
Oh well. Live and learn. That's the worst part about being a fan of technology but not having much knowledge.
I may need to ask you how to do this next summer.
I feel bad for not being here to give advice :(
In standard defensive behavior mode, I shall blame Steven for not having a Mac and knowing everything about it :P
:D
This happened in July and Squarespace came up in conversation as Christine had used it for a bit. I liked how the examples looked. I thought they looked professional, so I went for it.
It's not your fault.
(It's your Good Will Hunting moment, Jeremy. :) )
Apple has discontinued MobileMe. That's why I said square space (or similar) is a better long term option.
At the moment, us iWeb people are looking for other hosting solutions...
really? i tend to jump on furniture and scream.. and/or through a heavy book at it. will try a broom :)
but think of what would have happened had not found the comments! you'd be paying that every year! the comments have saved me a fortune i'm sure of it! :)
aha. I forgot that little tidbit. :)
I'm interested to see what opens up for the future.
I tend to splat them with a newspaper. I even have a couple of very old newspapers just for that job
