It is Tuesday and it's Jaime Alguersuari's birthday as well. Happy birthday to Jaime. Imagine the tweets we might see today! The team are already getting set up in Australia so they are probably already celebrating as I write this. I hope he has a good one. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:
- Talking of Jaime, he picked up some points for his Twitter account in Christine's Rankings yesterday, along with Heikki Kovalainen, whilst Timo Glock lost just half a point. Check out the full rankings and let me know if you spot anything during the week that deserves points added on or taken away.
- Steven has written a pretty epic guest post, revealing just how his vision of Formula One takes shape, and what he would do if he was in charge. It's a long post, there's no hiding the fact, but it's worth taking the time to read it, from someone who knows what he's talking about.
- Meanwhile, over at Spa, a section of the Blanchimont tunnel collapsed, which has apparently caused a bit of a hole in some run off area, and disturbed the track surface a little. They are confident it will be all fixed up and ready to go in time for the race though.
- I spotted some of the F1 journalists discussing the new Run That Track site, in which they get to log the time in which they complete the track in. It looks like a great idea, but we must cheer on Crofty who is bringing up the rear of the pack at the moment.
That's all for today. I hope your week is going okay so far, and I will see you in the comments.
Steven's post doesn't take that long to read and as stated, is totally worth it.
I wonder how much cheating will occur in the Run That Track world championship?
The new day arrived and I didn't even notice. I blame those walls
I have done some digging into the Rome circuit. It looks to me like it is more fake than USF1
They had a website that is now empty
http://romaformulafuturo.com/
They have a twitter account and have never tweeted
https://twitter.com/rmformulafuturo
They have a youtube channel with a virtual lap. Lots of overtaking. In the video but no chance in reality.
http://www.youtube.com/user/romaformulafuturo
The circuit looks like this.
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/439/rome.jpg
Well yeah, Monza and Valencia have both signed new contracts within the last year so I don't see where it was ever going to go....
Turkey is the victim if Rome gets a race
Eek i have an interview for my job tomorrow. I have to role play which i hate. Why cant i just say "Im already doing the job, how about you let me keep doing the job?"
Eurgh. Recruitment is all about stupid hoops. Just keep jumping, I'm sure you'll be fine :) Good luck!
Has anyone else who already works there applied for the job?
Tell them to sod off you are a serious professional. They will either hand you the job and decide you are a star or.... I can't remember the other option but I am sure it was good as well
Yaaaay the dole queue!! :D
I cant join the dole queue in australia so that option is out! I know of one person who has applied but i also know that management are mad at her. There were a couple of folk upstairs who wanted to apply too so i an assuming they have.
Boooo them! At least you can talk about what you've been up to actually doing the job :)
I shall have to mention the report I just got of everything that was done wrong yesterday and none of my team were on it. Quite a change from last week when they were all on it! It must be my super management.
You're hired
Thank you Sir Alan
GO TO BED!
Oops bit of a CAPS fail there.... You should get plenty of sleep though :)
Thanks steven. Can I have a pay rise?
Sure
You can come work for me. I've been looking for a decent manager for the past 5/6 months. The pay's a bit crummy though.
The commute might be a bit much. My mum found my grandads birth certificate when sorting out my nanas things though so that ancestry visa is now possible...
Ohh that reminds me I have to check if I need a visa for my summer job.
#isasleep.honest.
Finnish internet is awesome if you can sleep comment
It's the Linux distro I have on my netbook. It has a mindreading function. Quite handy
I hope Microsoft and Apple are worried by that
I certainly am!
I don't need a visa but some sort of residence permit which costs €70. Don't they know I want to spend the money I'll earn on fun stuff? :(
That's politicians for you. They can always find a way to take your money
Strange. Are you not in the EU?
I have weird restless feeling. My stomach is churning. There's nothing I'm particularly worried about. I don't like it :(
Watch Pointless. You will feel better. There is also a new Only Connect just up on the iplayer today
Ooooh good times!
I'll probably end up being awake until Nick gets up now. I'm sure he'll tell me to stop being stupid and go to bed....
At least you know there are no deciduous apples
That is very true!!
I am feeling very flat considering I am going driver hunting after work and the real event kicks off tomorrow. I dont like the way i cant feel that first ever grand prix excitement again :(. Perhaps going to new tracks is the key because ill be sad if i am this flat the day before Spa.
No No No! I am coming to meet you and it will be a fantastic almost-week-long festival. We will have fun, I promise!
I have just purchased a silver and orange suitcase (couldn't afford true McLaren luggage) and checked that my flight is confirmed with luggage allowance.
Jeremy and I will giggle like little girls if it helps?
Agreed :) Do we meet up Wednesday night, or just Thurs morning?
I still don't know how long I will be driving for. But if I get there in time to go to the track tomorrow, I will have nothing to do afterward. Where are you staying Jeremy?
I could do wednesday night if you guys are keen. Its $12 steak night. Jeremy as a mclaren member you can meet the rest of that group who are very friendly, plus Jan is as close to famous as you can get ;)
I am at the Bayview Eden on Queen St. It looks a few minutes walk from the track.
http://www.bayviewhotels.com/eden/
I am going to the www.mactalk.com.au head office when I get off the plane which is at 2/70 Racecourse Road, North Melbourne Victoria 3051 and will work it out from there. You'd be most welcome on the podcast even though you're not a Mac guy yet. Starts at 5pm
I knew I should have joined but didn't know why, since I wouldn't get to tour the factory.
I'll bring Zoe's membership card and Paul can go in drag :P
LOL.
I hope my iphone will keep me in touch tomorrow.
I like Macs! I just can't afford one right now. I had a Macbook a few months ago.
Wow!
Awesome! Let me know when you are ready and I'll use my staff discount for you :)
I have to go for haircut now, Amy has my contact details if you want to get my number. I'm OzJez on Twitter
Cool, OK.
I am sure you can come too paul! They were very welcoming to my brother last year :)
Great, well I might just do that
I have few Mclaren shirts
One lap of the tan completed but no one interesting is running at this time of night . Next stop is the beach
The internet is a small place aint it?
I just realised I have no ear plugs! eeek. I hope I can get these at the track.
But I wouldn't want to paint it.
I can see there is a joke happening here......
Morning :D
Wow - these guys are pretty quick - even Crofty is a faster runner than I am!
Not really... just had a weird experience where a real world friend said, "hey you're something to do with this Sidepodcast thing right?"
"Um sorta".
"Them let me introduce you to this guy who's a friend of mine he keeps going on about Sidepodcast too."
The friend of a friend is Tony Hirst who did the F1 Data Junkie stuff that's been mentioned in the last few days and also the same Tony Hirst Christine linked to on Media Future Change yesterday.
So that's weird.
Awesome - that man has a project going which looks really interesting (check his site and see)...
England is a small place ;-)
That's a cool thing to be part of!!
They definitely sell ear plugs at the track. Which totally reminds me to find mine, in their wee mclaren case. I am going to be so branded this weekend.
I'm getting more excited. I need MORE Mclaren stuff!!!!!
true. I think of these people as living a long way away Andy lives in York and Tony on the Isle of White. But I guess you guys would say, 300 miles that's nothing!
*driving further than that tomorrow*
ah I see :)
I mean I have been to both of those places and I have driven more than that in a day in England but you will tend to run out of England if you carry on like that ;)
LOL, true.
But it is cool to be recognised. You will soon be "Alex, from the internet"
I'm not at Christine-esque levels yet!
I am just listening to my selection for Giggles Radio for Sunday. This show is going to be awsome. So many good songs!
I am a rubbish stalker. Heading home now without seeing anyone at all.
I am useless at packing. I only just remembered my F1 tickets.
http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/slideshow.aspx?sectionid=5566&subsectionid=204103§ionname=slideshow&subsectionname=webber&photo=15
Trackies and a tshirt.
many f1 drivers this relaxed at home?
the guy is a legend
Should I take my CAMS license in case someone invites me to drive a car around Albert Park? :D
i thought of that earlier and Zoe laughed and laughed and laughed :(
I'm taking ARDS (which i guess is the equivalent) in April :D
Morning all
That's what I wsa expecting. But you just never know
Probably even better that what I have
Just found this via a tweet...
You may not like rallying but THIS is going to make you smile.... and possibly start scanning the cars for sale ads....
http://jalopnik.com/5497042/how-a-500-craigslist-car-beat-400k-rally-racers
Have a good Tuesday....
I guess a lot of people like singing about themselves - it's the letter I, after all. :D
Try finding one at a hardware shop. It'll almost definitely be cheaper than what they'd be selling trackside.
Good tip - if I can get to a hardware shop between now and then!
Mclaren brought a two year old car for promotions. They must not like the look of the new cars either :D
so the drivers at the thing tomorrow are force india, sauber, williams, red bull and torro rosso. Interviews start at 4 and end at 6.
and by 4 I mean 4.50
Of corse. Can we watch the interviews?
yep, they're on the stage at the end of the toury thing. I shall try nab a good spot. I am sad Heikki isn't there, but the fact that so many teams are there means I might not have to spend quite so long in the autograph queue on Thursday trying to get photos of everyone :D
Cool. I am way too late with everything. I haven't memorized everyones faces yet. What if I see Claire and dont know?
and when for Lou arrives, lots of photos of Jenson driving a taxi.
I am terrible with things like that! Every time I saw a group of middle aged men today I was like 'ooh what if you are journalists whose names I know but not faces?'
Can they please race that Mclaren?
Joe has glasses
*easy to spot*
Joe I can handle. Jake I can handle. James Allen I can handle. Dudes whose names start with J.
LOL.
Jenson, Heikki. Wait...?
I have no problem with drivers! It's just all those extra F1 hangers-on :D
Morning guys
Afternooooon
Hey dude :)
My local paper is live tweeting Gaga. I'm tempted to follow it just to see if they mention my favourite Finn :D
Here's a funny anecdote for you. Mrs. Goat just took our Christmas-themed tablecloth to the dry cleaners and he asked her "Do you need it back in a hurry?" :D
They defo need to get pictures of him strutting his stuff to Lady Gaga
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek. I've just realised Dr Who starts next Saturday!!! *does happy dance*
That is really soon!
These comments are almost Jaime-esque ;)
Jon 1 - Driving Test 0
wooohoooo! well done :D
BOO YA.
and. i just picked up my Go Racing pack, with all the gumpf to be able to do my Race Driver test! EXCITED!!
Yeeah!!
I guess Lewis feels ready for the weekend as last night he was in the audience cheering Nicole in the US at the "Dancing with the stars" TV show..
"It was hardly a surprising result.
Nicole Scherzinger, of dance troupe Pussycat Dolls, last night topped the leaderboard as the new season of Dancing With The Stars premiered in America.
The 31-year-old beauty was cheered on by her Formula One boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, who was among her supporters in the audience."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQp3GW62gE0 (Lewis cheering at minute 1:49)
Well done
I can't believe how quick it's suddenly arrived!
he must be the only driver not here yet. Hope he adjusts to the time difference quickly!
I suppose, really though, we haven't stopped talking about it, so it's like it never went away :)
true true :)
Goodness! He likes leaving things to the last minute as much as we do!
Unless he really wanted to see Gaga quite desperately
I am sure I read the other day he was in Sydney but I might be losing my mind.
I just found out Anando paid a visit to the F1 shop on Monday. Why oh why was I not there?
alex, if you're around. i'm confused by how ridiculously small the world is.
how come @psychemedia links to @offmessage's blog and @offmessage links to @fourstar's blog?
isn't that cheating? like being a professional dancer n'all?
also... why is the english chap introducing them?
It happens all the time sadly.
well I for one am devastated.
she's no Drew Lachey! Boy bands forever!
Yeah!
*opens google behind doohickey*
You should see this program in Danish. For some reason:
(1) All the s'lebs are quite good
(2) Nobody ever gets criticised
(3) Nobody ever gets bad mouthed.
Every season it's quite boring until they kick out a popular s'leb (last year it was the beauty queen/taekwando champion lady) and then everyone talks about it. It's so boring!
he is to Nick Lachey as Ralf is to Michael.
sounds like every other reality show :D
surely the most impressive thing, has to be that bruno and the guy who says "seven" a lot, got the gig in the US? i mean, i can't imagine they're anything like as crossover as simon cowell, and he only got a job there because he invented x-factor and decided he should.
who in their right mind agreed to pay those two (plus the announcer guy) the air fare?
Very true. We have X-Factor at the moment. Guess what happened? ;)
One of the judges (Craig something?) ended up judging the NZ show. That's 16 week's accommodation, apperance fees and numerous chat show visits and interviews...
they seem to love sharing their stars. Brendan Cole is a Kiwi and judges on the NZ one but dances on the British one
I guess I should go to bed since I have 10 drivers to stalk tomorrow! I have interview nerves though so I doubt I will sleep much :(
Ah, this I know about. Everyone licences the format from the BBC, it makes nearly as much money as Top Gear in overseas sales. The voiceover guy doesn't travel, he records all the intros once before the season starts, then they get played out automagically. Len and Bruno got the job because many of the US dancers trained in the UK, so Len knew them from teaching/judging, and in terms of the show, the two of them are a package. They help carry the branding over. Craig got the NZ job mainly because they knew him and Brendan would fight a lot and create publicity.
And now I shall lurk again!
And they do that epically!
Please come back!
I'm still here. I'm having a small fight with Vodafone, who I have always really liked, but are now making me very cross.
wha? although that doesn't explain why they couldn't get someone local.
request denied ;)
they've gone downhill since jenson arrived...
wheeeee! it's nearly time :)
They use Alan Dedicoat because he's the 'Voice' of Strictly, it helps keep it familiar across the two shows. I believe when the show first went to the US, they took one of the BBC producers to run it., so they used people they were already using.
afternoon everyone
True. Although, their twitter support so far appear to be far more efficient than the email people. Of course, my dog was more use than the email people...........
it's not jenson's fault! ;)
hi everyone
good news: stuart's book is finally shipping!
Yay!
i can't get away with nuttin' anymore.
the walls have ears...
hmmm.
say, that vodafone haven't been the same since heikki left...
:D #asleep
HA!
I triiiiiiied. Stupid job interview, I should not be so worried about it. :(
#isnthere
You're interviewing for a job you already have, if they didn't like you they'd have already got rid of you, your results are great, they just do things like that to keep everyone on their toes, makes people work harder (thats the theory anyway)
oh yeah.
SO STOP WORRYING
:)
#isnthere
You've bought another actual book, haven't you?
oh no!
It's a small world... Andy (@offmessage) and fourstar have been friends since the mid nineties. I've known Andy for about 5 years ish. Andy and another friend Doug run a web design company in York. And yeah I guess Andy knows Tony but I didn't know that bit until last night!
Ooops I'll get right in trouble for that... A web company not a web design company. :)
http://www.isotoma.com/
yikes, python :)
They are very keen on their brackets... As am I :) (although I write all my code on one line ;) )
i thought python didn't use brackets? it always feels more like vb to me.
but but but they gave me the job temporarily without an interview but now they want to give it to someone permanently and technically I should be first in line but what if I'm really bad at interviews WHAT IFFFFFF?
Sorry I got a bit confused. To distract you here is a picture of Jeremy who claimed that he needed a third monitor just to deal with my if statements:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandronov/4456587579/
(Yes it does say "Word is annoying" on the back of his monitor)
you haven't invited us to watch live timing from your office yet.
Jeremy does actually have 5 monitors on his desk! So I think he'd be alright although two of them are quite small 17".
why are you being interviewed for your own job? that's makes no sense at all.
they do thatkind of thing at my other half's place - they normally know who they want for the job but have to interview to make it appear fair - I'm sure you'll be fine Amy - you wouldn't be doing the job now if they didn't think you were capable
at my work there are three supervisors, one of them is currently doing a secondment so I am doing a secondment to fill in for him until he comes back. One of the other ones has just resigned so now there is a permanent job available. So it's the same role but technically not the same job so they have to interview for it.
I am having a serious cap dilemma. Having three McLaren hats is not working for me.
Jon 1 - Driving Test 0 {Comment #104}
Congratulations! :D
oh - you'll just have to buy a new one!
You know what they say 3 heads are better than 1
all my problems would be solved if my lovely black one would have offspring with my bright orange Heikki one. I want a black Heikki one :(
You need to do an OllieWhite: http://www.flickr.com/photos/olliewhite/2892847100/in/set-72157600916564914/
My exam yesterday (for Medical Word Processing) was supposed to have been 1 hour and 45 minutes. An hour after it had started, I'd done the exam, triple-checked the work, handed it in and had a debriefing with my prompter. I thought the paper was really easy :)
The tricky bits were a) figuring out what to do in the 7 hours between the exam and my Terminology class in the evening (going home and coming back would have cost £4.10 to get about 2 hours at home) and b) staying awake and alert (trying to finish a blog entry and catch up on comments after coming home resulted in a tiring 18-hour day). I just about managed both...
For this evening's trick, I will be doing a Medical Audio exam.
ooooooh yes! I did at one stage wear the Lewis and the Heikki hats together, but to add a third to the mix is genius.
Oh, and happy birthday to Jaime Alguersuari :)
I sent him a tweet earlier. All in Caps, of course ;)
I laughed when I saw that. I am kind of tempted to yell at him tomorrow.
You definitely have to call him Tim
ooooh. Perhaps I could pass the time at work tomorrow making a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TIM!!!! sign
I was doing puns then I'm doing puns now...
Some would say I'm a very punny guy.
Punbelievable.
This isn't how we get a promotion.... :P
I'm all alone between 7.30 and 9am, no one would know!
Hehehe I can't see how that could possibly go wrong :D
heheh I have to be on my best behaviour tomorrow since they are letting me leave early to get to the track. So on that note I might try and sleep again since its almost 2am...
Night all :D I promise many twitpics in the 'morrow :D
Night Amy, have fun!
Night Amy. Enjoy yourself and good luck with job :)
Afternoon all. You find me rather bored on one of my days off work.
ARRRGH! I hate Linux *cries, stomps feet and bashes head against desktop*
*hugs*
skype?
no audio. I can only watch/listen to one thing after that the audio isn't working anymore.
Skype still works I just have to reboot before using it.
Hah, Ok I take that back. I accidentally opened two audio files at the same time and alsa(?) can't cope with that.
I still have to reboot for skype though, but I can live with that.
I love Linux again :)
interesting turn of events ... it is rather interesting exercise to start arranging extra ticket and visa at 11 pm a night before the trip, but as I found about an hour out it can be done. the Oz GP turned into family outing :-)
Depends on where you're from. :)
well, visa was the easy part, plane ticket was more fun. half an hour on the line with Cathay Pacific, when I was almost done the line got cut, when I called back I found out the reservations just closed down for the day. lucky the lady that told me that was also able to fix the booking...
When the luck's with ya... :D So Amy will meet Mrs Wolf?
Mrs Wolf was part of trip from the very beginning as every year. It was Mr Wolf Jr who made the last minute decision :-)
Dang' young'in's! *shakes fist*
#MFC
It seems that there is a growing tendency for people to review the version of the thing they are reviewing rather than the content. Which hopefully means (with the amazon review being all important) that consumers might well drive the abandonment by companies trying to make people buy twice or wait for the kindle version:
http://kottke.org/10/03/the-new-rules-for-reviewing-media
i'd say that trend probably started with dvd's. at least in my head.
do i buy this film? let's see what extras it has...
that's kind of why i like renting films. everything is disposable, your purchase won't be superseded by a better version next week because it expired after 24hrs.
I keep wondering why we need to buy books on a kindle? Why can't I borrow them from the library / rent them?
that's a damn good point. i hadn't thought about that, but i don't remember the last book i read twice.
because the publishers don't want you to be able to.
indeed. I see it this way... Reference books could be bought rather than rented because you might want to search them. But other than that even if you like the bookshelf concept a digital repesentation showing read and to read is possible even if you'd have to pay again to read again.
agreed. something the appletv does with rentals would be ace.
they'll soon have to when their industry implodes in the next ten years.
that wasn't english.
i like the appletv's UI for renting movies. if books appeared that way, it would be fab. i could see it working for reference books too though. if the price was right, i'd just rent them as i needed them.
do you not think they're at least trying to go digital, given the kindle and ebooks. it doesn't feel like they're fighting in the same way hollywood is.
Evening folks,
What goes on?
I think they're fighting. They want to release ebooks later than the physical copy is released. The prices are crazy.
they are doing much better sure. But right now there is a big problem which is Amazon. What's the point of Amazon for books and movies in 5 years?
Amazon wants to stay in those businesses. So books won't be platform indepenant for a while as they increasingly desparately try and keep you buying through them.
It comes back to a question which is interesting to me: why no magazine store for the iPhone? Answer because the magazines want to provide enhanced content they don't want to just reproduce their content. But hold on aren't books the same? Perhaps not with a novel. Most novels are the same. But comic books will be changed. What about say a hames manual? Would you buy that in iBooks or as an App where clicking on things helped you?
The big debate is going to be between form and function. Amazon are betting you are still going to think of that thing as "a book" Apple are betting you aren't.
Evening all
For those of you who missed Wonders of the Solar System on Sunday the repeat is on BBC2 at 7. I know a lot of people were interested in it when we discussed it on Sunday. It's also on the iplayer.
To make the point of Amazon thing more clear...
old model:
writer -> agent -> publisher -> clearing seller -> bookshop
(Clearing sellers where people who would buy books from publishers and sell them to all of the actual bookshops around the country.)
Amazon model:
writer -> agent -> publisher -> bookshop
They act as a clearing seller which means they make more money and can still sell the books cheaper.
Now what?
Well ask yourself this... Why do you need a bookshop anymore? What's the point of it? Can you not buy directly from the publisher? The publisher doesn't have to hold stock anywhere. So what's the point of the bookshop?
You could say the same about the publisher of course. But part of the point of a publisher is that writing a book takes time and while you're writing a book you aren't making money. So you have an advance (this is the theory anyway). The publishers pay you to write a book on a subject (or a novel). And then you and the publisher share in the profits (hopefully).
You could do away with this but you need some kind of filtering system.
My guess is that Amazon wants to be the publisher or the device maker because being the bookshop doesn't seem to have much point anymore.
There will be a Kindle Application for iPad application obviously but why won't there be a Dorling Kindersley application for the iPad?
I give you itunes. Why do people put podcasts on itunes when people can go to the original site? Because people know there are books in a bookshop and if you are looking for a book a bkkoshop is a good place to start.
true. i don't see prices of anything falling just because it's digital though. the value is in the content, not in the delivery.
#norrynick
Sore subject.
evening all
i think they should be a bit cheaper, paper costs etc, same with singles and downloads but i agree, content is importantest
Although if you go to the Waterstones web site, some of their e-books are cheaper than the physical copy. They seem to be quite clued up on the e-book thing but they may well be the exception.
Hello all, hope we are all ok
a good question. relate that back to music and zavvi answered that already.
i'm surprised that banks haven't stepped in to fill this void.
:)
that's a fair point.
i'm not sure that distribution ever cost that much.
we all assumed it did, but i bet that ever more efficient processes means there isn't much to be saved.
Hi Janna,
We seem to have joined in the midst of a busy media conversation...
true
oops.
Sure... Aggregators are a big thing. How much money did iTunes Store and the App Store make Apple last year? Nothing. Not directly anyway. How is Amazon supposed to compete with that?
;D
I'm enjoying it, we'll see in a few years who was right ;)
i think people expect there to be savings, so there currently are. i wouldn't mind betting they'll increase as physical falls by the wayside.
Interesting theory on Vettel's Bahrain problems from Ron Dennis. Looks like he has picked up Blabbermarsh's habit. If he is right Red Bull's season could be seriously compromised.
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/157966/1/did_a_fuel_problem_cost_vettel_bahrain_win.html
they didn't make anything from podcasting that's for certain :)
Paper is a pretty efficient medium. But there are physical costs... But there are hosting and bandwidth costs too.
I've had this conversation too often about music to enter in to it any more
;)
i read it, but i think he's wrong. ted said the back end of the car had burned away.
Exactly. So it looks like Amazon is sunk for media.
the conversation about music is done though, right? what else is there to say. the industry lost.
ECU shut down, eh? I'd love to take that unit off of everyone. If they want to control fuel, let them do it with their foot
I've added some extra words to his quote in bold...
I think you are right. Also, they seem to treat the e-books as separate to the physical, they have their own offers & sale prices, we shall see how much it changes as more people buy in this format
How does anyone compete with it? The one thing we know is someone will and they will take the business from Apple. You may think that is impossible but even people who dominate market places can be wiped out quickly. You only have to look at the iPod. Who thought the Sony Walkman was vulnerable to any kind of threat?
i still say he's talking trash. the ecu didn't melt the bodywork?
The industry didn't lose - it shifted and it still is shifting. It'll be a while before we reach the endgame
:)
to melt cf we're talking serious temperatures, if the ecu was that hot, it would stop working
nahhh... it's just a building rant t'is all
We saw the damage on the TV coverage at the time. Looked like damage from the exhaust being packaged too tightly. It certainly didn't look like anything that would have had any real effect on the speed of the car. Of course it is possible cables and the like could have been damaged but I just can't imagine a plug failed as claimed
ahh... no no sorry misunderstanding...
My point is that there doesn't need to be that layer "as a business". There will be book recommendation places, sites, things, communities. Ones that have everything and ones that have niches. I mean I have the App Store on my phone and yet I decide what I want based on things I see lots of other places. When I pay my money I am paying almost everything to the producer of the application net hosting fees.
I think the delivery mechanism won't be a business... The device and the content are the things.
That did cross my mind
The ecu isnot at the exhast exit though. It's on top of the engine I think although I am happy to be told I am wrong
it sounded like the engine was broken, or something was broken.
it didn't sound like it was running conservatively?
lower-front of the sidepods usually.
yeah, it wouldnt be on top of the engine. packaging nightmare
i agree.
The big difficulty if you don't have a bookstore is making people aware your book exists. I assume that is why podcasters use iTunes.
I agree with that
I don't know how the ecu switches to low fuel mode. Ron does though
That makes sense
i'm not so sure. the likes of spotify offer something different that'll be worth keeping an eye on, but to me music is the least interesting medium right now.
as a consumer i have what i want, drm free music at a fair price that's easily accessible. the music industry will never sell me another filler track.
But Spotify is part of that industry as opposed to being separate from it. Its shares are partially owned by the majors.
However, it is a much wider game, because the influence of many of the independent organisations.
i know, but i don't think it will succeed. i think it's interesting as a concept, but we used it for a few months and now christine and i buy music on itunes.
I think people want both things. Some people will never buy some people will buy for convenience. They want to make money from the non-buying people.
I didn't mind Spotify until they started taking songs out of my playlists as fast as I could put them in.
That's why I think it still hasn't reached its crossover point yet and that will take time - also, the fact that Spotify is only available in the UK and Sweden also means that it has yet to penetrate key markets.
There is a weird problem in that in the US musicians don't make money from radio stations. So Spotify is kind of difficult to make work contractually there.
It's part of the hard sell to get people to sign to premium. They want to keep newer or other albums on a higher tier with higher quality mp3's, because they feel that's what will make folk sign up.
having tried it though, i don't think it offered anything that i don't have with itunes. i don't see as doing anything special to shift the market.
i'll watch with interest though.
I didn't know that. That is insane
Yea, they didn't tell me that though. I'm not prepared to pay that much a month as I don't listen enough to justify it. There don't appear to be any other options, so I uninstalled it.
but you didn't uninstall itunes.
This is another thing that will change over time, but it takes time. One of the great and frustrating problems I've had when working in the music industry is that everything moves so slowly.
Things need to get done and resolved in order to keep up with consumers, yet the company's at the top are far far too slow to move on any issue.
where else is it going though? i don't feel any overriding desperation for it to go anywhere.
they didn't keep up with consumers. apple did, and now control the market.
YOu're absolutely correct. The average consumer spend on music (hardcore buyers versus people that spend nothing) is £60 - even me as someone that buys lots of music, goes to gigs and all the other things, £120 per year on top of that is far too much, but there's been rumblings about lowering the price significantly
The frustration on the inside is quite palpable at times.
Because Apple got it absolutely right at the right time. They understood what both the consumer and the market wanted and acted sufficiently
And the movie industry is wary that apple is going to do that "to them". When what apple is doing is "for them".
The movie industry haven't noticed that they have already lost.
because they're not making millions like they used to?
What we may see in years to come is just some sort of middle ground like the IMRO license that people pay out once a year
also true. although i still want more from movies.
- no drm
- hd on every platform
with the music industry, i have what i want. i don't care what they want.
with the movie industry, i want more.
That's not what I meant. I am referring to people within the industry themselves that are trying to create quality content that can be sold at a reasonable price and at least break even, but even the majors stifle the indies often through licensing deals - therefore everyone gets deadlocked
oh i see.
i comes down to what alex was saying about writers needing publishers for loans. at the moment, recording is more expensive that writing a novel, but if it comes down enough, labels may find themselves squeezed out too.
The only issue I with this is that as someone who was both a musician and a record label owner, is that money still needs to filter down to the artist.
It's not the big companies I care about (if they can't adapt, then they don't deserve to survive); however there does need to be some settlement for the artists and producers involved and trying to source that is getting harder and harder.
A sad reality at the moment, t'is all.
case in point. we effectively have a recording studio in our house. we just chose to make an f1 podcast. if we'd decided to write music, would we need a record company any more?
Anyone who studies economics can see what happens... There are a few "Natural monopolies" things that genuinely are not easy to break into small pieces. For example provision of water. More rain falls in some places than others the people who have that water have a monopoly.
Most other things that aren't resources related are non-natural monopolies that are created because of a technological problem.
While there are only 5 terrestrial tv channels those channels can command vast fees for advertising. Oooops... Did somebody invent the internet?
No non-natural monopoly is sustainable forever. You are making too much money for people to not come knocking.
The music industry, the movie industry, the tv industry, and the book industry have done lots of work to make it hard to "do it any other way". And because of that people have found another way.
Turns out that a lot of what they were selling was the scarcity of their product. But it was them who was making it artificially scarce. So the huge profits are a thing of the past because... anyone can do it.
Simple. Record Co's are for the most part only useful for marketing and that's the direction the major's end up going down - marketing and licensing. It would eventually cut out the production side
So you are saying that if you chose to do so you could make money from Felipe Baby for instance?
i agree. i don't know what the returns are like at the moment, but if i was in a band i'd be out there touring my arse off, but recording very little right now.
hehe. we don't have the ability to make money at anything i don't think :)
Yes. They are annoying holding out because they think they haven't lost. Beware any company that hears customers saying, "can we have this better thing we'll pay you more" and they say "no".
I think we might get sued before we made money on that.
Touring is massively riddled with debt s right now. Record companies often give artists extra advances to tour
Is legal advice one of the things that record labels do that independent artists may not think about?
The point is that... there is a problem for the artists and the producers right now because the mechanism doesn't exist. If the labels all stopped existing overnight then it would probably be better for everyone.
hehehe hi everyone, i've just had a quick glance at the comments.. i (heart) that RocketRedhead was there to defend Jenson when i wasn't around. :)
record companies just pay lawyers.
No. Legal advise must be absolutely independent of record companies, but there are specific music solicitors available
Right everyone... I have to go and eat Chinese food.
Have very much enjoyed the #MFC conversation :)
Hi Lou
hibyelou
Enjoy the eatery
:D
But they will make sure lawyers are involved to make sure they don't get sued
Didn't know that
it wouldn't because you have the same thing you mentioned earlier with publishers. they lend you money so you can work.
how much does it cost you to write a book? how much does it cost a band to record an album?
*waves*
people still get sued. weekly.
Every company has their own set of lawyers, but other than that it is a legal requirement to untied die to conflict of interest laws
see ya chap.
The first line in the approach of any recording contract is "you are advised to seek independent legal advise". If a company do not do this, they may find the contract null and void when in court
What's interesting on the music debate for me is that I used to listen to music all the time but I've discovered through podcasts that I prefer listening to the spoken word. I buy few albums now, I don't have Spotify, LastFM or similar . I hear music on the radio to wake me up, Giggles Radio and startledbunny podcasts but that's all on a regular basis. For me, iTunes has taken over from the music industry but only because it's given me something to listen to that isn't music.
Nothing to write a book (that I wouldn't already own). I appreciate the difference. Even worse for a movie.
I guess I'm contradicting myself earlier I said it was good for there to be publishers just not bookstores (that make profit).
Same deal here take tv... good for there to be people making shows... No need for a channel?
My only issue with the likes of iTunes and Spotify over actual stores though is that I do miss the contact with other music lovers at that point. So often I've been given such great recommendations and given recommendations to others based on their knowledge of what I listen to through the music I've purchased.
...but maybe that's just me getting old
;)
In an actual shop?
Yep - one of those!!
;)
:)
I agree with a lot of that. If I am driving I listen to whatever is on the radio and generally that is music but if I am in front of my computer with the choice of thousands of radio stations or other music sources I look for podcasts to listen to instead.
But they are outside
But then again, I always read lots of music blogs and go to gigs, so there are other avenues for music related consumption and expansion
I have never seen anyone even remotely talkative in a music shop.
I have - lots of times, but maybe you need to be an utter musical nerd.
;)
in fairness though... ever in HMV etc? because those shops killed the kind of places i assume you're thinking about. not the internet.
Not too much of a big store fan - it's too sterile and often far too expensive, so I tend to be a independent shop or record fair trawler
So do I. When that happens in MotoGP that happens at the end of the race, not the middle.
And we all know that Renault has the best fuel consumption anyways ;)
agreed. and i miss those too. but nothing the any industry does will see those return.
Same here!
#sameperson
So anyway.... Formula 1.........
:)
mmm, bernie hans't got a clue, has he?
Or maybe he's too clever.............
(scratches chin)
:)
One day I swear Bernie will start breaking into a maniacal laugh on the grid and reveal himself to be the bad guy from He-Man

Hey everyone
So the 'fans' are in favour of the new points system and Schumi is the most supported driver? http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82306
Really?
I'm starting my drive to Melboune. 670km ahead!
Good luck Paul. Have fun
Drive safely & take care
thanks :-)
Take care and have fun!

Evening all. Another productive evening of writing done for tonight...
Someone set our alarm last night and it took me 30 minutes to remember the code to turn it off. I hope its not hard wired to a security company
even webber calls him "britney"?
Webber presses his radio button with a certain degree of enthusiasm: "Don't think so, mate. Britney's in the wall."
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2689
^^a brilliant read btw (subs req.)
Far be it from me to question the conclusions and suggest this is just spin but the points sytem we have now was not the points system when people voted. It was changed long after the vote. The proposed system at the time of the vote had first and second place scoring points in the same ratio as the old system.
I call Bogus
:D
Hammond's slo mo prog just started and is showing people in a helicopter playing with live power lines. I guess health and safety don't know about this
oooh! Thanks for reminding me!
is it any wonder they thought the castrolrankings was a good idea? they probably asked loads of people and they all said "nooooooo". which they took to mean absolutely.
Cheers for the reminder Mr Steven
Is christine still up? I just sent her an email.
Will do.
at a quarter past nine? i know she
sleeps a lotworks hard, but that would be taking the mickey.Thanks. I have lost all concept of what hours sane people keep.
WHat hours do people who stalk racing drivers need to keep?
I keep the hours that enable me to be at work by 730 :(
80km in and grabbing breakfast. Mcdonalds has free sidepodcast!
I heard all McDonalds have free wifi but I have never checked
And a long line :-(
it works!
Does Sidepodcast have free mcdonalds?
hehe!
Good luck paul!
maybe mr c will add that to the doohickey
hehe
That would be something sidepodcast would have that no other podcast does
onlyjust starting :-(
Would you like some fries with the Grand Prix Paul??
Theres a reward at the end of it at least ;)
I can see the counter!
I just realised how confused i'm going to get on Sunday.. with such an early start for the race i hope i don't miss it with the clocks changing..
are the clocks going back or forwards? I'll text you anyways to make sure you're up ;)
Same problem last year wasn't it? I had my alarms all set out, then promptly slept through it.
I didn't know that happened this weekend. Tha
t is going to cause chaos
spring forward
we're thinking of keeping sidepodcast on GMT. would that be confusing?
ahh yeah. spring forward, fall back. :)
i've no idea.. backwards?... that's all very well... but whether or not i'll hear my phone..
You are switching from sidepodtime. That would be confusing
big picture pluggy: http://www.f1minute.com/category/f1-big-picture/
and f1m pluggy: http://www.f1minute.com/category/daily/
also true. just wondered if BST means anything to people outside the uk?
Ooh true... time for some headpinging exercises to get it in ship shape condition for a wake up!
yeah, i had the same fears then too.. i think i ended up waking up an hour early. I think my old alarm turned itself forwards automatically?..or something. However i have a new alarm now and who knows if it will sort itself out..
RALF!!!!!
never changing it to GMT+1? or just for Sunday?
never.
Right backon the road.
so sidepodcast would be an hour behind actual time?... so it would be very easy to be late for things if i accidently looked at the time of a comment rather than my watch?
GMT is more international. It will probably cause confusion in the UK. Will Giggles Radio be staying on GMT too?
don't know. just seemed like the international thing to do.
also a good point.
Plus we hate time.
true story
All time does is cause problems. Timezones were a bad idea. What's wrong with everyone being on the same time? It just means at noon in Australia it would be night.
how is it a more international thing to do? i don't understand.. surely it will confuse those in the UK (well.. okay.. probably just me) and wont make a difference to people like Amy who live elsewhere in the world as i presume comments show up as being in UK time anyway?..
so what we need is like an Andronov Scale of timezones? :P
ALEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In very Top Gear fashion, this Jezza is racing Paul to the Melbourne GP. I started walking to the train station a little after 8:30 am. My flight leaves Sydney at 12:15
I think I'll win :P
..in the world.
GMT is a known offset (sometimes called also called UTC). i don't know how well it's known, but i'm guessing more than BST, when is just a nonsensical nothingness really.
by making sidepodcast GMT only, we're basically saying there is no offset. so if you live in GMT + 8, sidepodtime is you - 8. not you - 8 + 1. if that makes sense?
it will royally confuse uk people when the daily goes up an hour late though.
awe.some!
I vote that you follow BST as you are based in the UK and the point made about people in the UK expecting the comment time to be the actual time is a good one. Us foriegners will get it right because we are already used to checking the disclaimer at the bottom which says GMT+1
I like comments showing up in the correct british time, i use you as my world clock
Scarbs has added a few posts over the last couple of days. I haven't read any of them yet but I know they wil be good and I will read them later. He has one on parts produced by stereo lithography that were on the cars in Bahrain. We were discussing stereo lithography a couple of days ago. What a coincidence
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/03/22/use-of-rp-materials/
but during summer, are clock is wrong.
fair point.
ah okay, that makes sense. It will take some getting used to. but i'm sure we'll manage... or probably be late to things :D hehe
*hi scarbs*
Internet is patchy. I'll check back periodically. No production crew with me on this journey :P
We need a map to track both journeys
go get him jezza!
:)
yes very (for me at least)
we may be being outvoted here :(
how can keeping the time the same be more confusing out of interest?
Oh god when are the stupid clocks changing? I wish everyone could just stick with GMT. This = a nightmare for me at work......
Oh well.
on sunday.
Because it's not the actual time? :P
we could start a trend
Which way do we go now? I lose an hour?
is it though. bst is no time of note.
because at the moment I know the daily is 2 hours behind me, how am I supposed to cope with it suddenly being 3 (or one??)? ;)
errrr... yes?
I prefer summer time to normal time. Let's just stay on that
ahh, cause your clocks change too. go ya.
I thought we get an hour?
You just said you wished everyone would stick to the same time
:) :)
But seeing as they won't, I'd rather every clock be the same....
i.have.no.idea ... i've nearly been here for 3 years and i have the same problem each year...
It's going forward. So it'll be one o'clock and then you'll blink and it'll be two o'clock. We lose an hour.
Clocks go forward so 2am to 3am takes less than a second so you lose an hour
if only that could've happened in bahrain
Oh yes. I knew that...
okay. thank you :) i'll not be awake at
1am2am though... i'll be getting sleep for the GP :)Please note we do not lose two hours. That would be confusing and no-one would know when to get up
heheheheheheheh!
I think I agree with Mr and Mrs C
I hate time.
hehehehehe :D
Luckily it's not me that's at work that night and has to deal with the hideous mess.... Or in the morning :P
am getting myself on melbourne time starting tonight i think.
(any excuse)
Hello sidepodcast people! I was hoping to benefit from your collective wisdom - I'm going to be in Paris this weekend (not the UK as normal) and was wondering if any of you knew of a way of watch the BBC F1 coverage live on an iphone? All help welcome!
Please let me know if this isn't the right forum for this sort of question ....
Surely Rockall is in its own time zone and can do what it likes
i wish i could... stupid school.
I think I'll just pray I get it right, and if I miss it, I blame it on the fact I need to be fit and ready for the football match later on...
Maybe it won't be as bad losing an hour actually. Last time it was very hard not to dock people an hour's pay. The computer went mad millennium bug style.
You are asking in the right place but I have no idea what the answer is
hey pad rock. wouldn't that cost an absolute fortune?
sadly iplayer doesn't do live streaming on the iphone yet, do you have the official f1 app?
ahh, but we still answer too all of you :)
I think I'd find it confusing but I'm sure I'd get used to it if it's what you guys want to do.
Am hoping I'll be able to use the hotel's wifi for that and I do have the F1 app - which is great! I know I could obviously watch it in the hotel room, but that would make me very unpopular with my girlfriend who will be attempting to sleep at that time in the morning, but figure I might be able to get away with watching it on my iphone if I am able to ...
I know that there is a website called tvcatchup (http://www.tvcatchup.com/) that will live stream UK tv channels, but I think that will only work in the UK
Why would they geolock it? It's an illegal site.
does that work on the iphone though? at least watching f1 won't bankrupt you :)
I would suggest your best bet would be to go to one of the Irish bars as they used to show races. I am too out of touch to reccommend one though
I vote yes to mr c on melbourne time. It will be nice to have someone in the comments at 5am your time to relay back information to from albert park :D
i do my best.
No idea, but it didn't work for me in South Africa ....
Ping; I has been watching films! http://toata.wordpress.com/2010/03/23/69-film-reviews-ii/
Maybe the computer you were on didn't like it or something. People who make sites like that don't normally care too much for geolocking. I'd be surprised if they'd done it.....
apparently yes: http://iphone.tvcatchup.com/
are you sure it's illegal? i haven't looked into it, but it's not a hard to shut a site such as that down if required.
I haven't heard of it before but I can't see the BBC giving someone licence to stream their tv?
180km down and coffee number2. I hope I don't drown.
i don't know enough about it. was curious if you knew, or were assuming.
oooh, where's jeremy.
on a plane I think. Taking the easy way out :-)
Right back to the road. Must do more kms between stops
am loving this!
Especially if you wanna beat that Jeremy. Go team Paul
want to drive? I'm bored already
ooh, we taking sides?
in that case i'm backing jeremy.
oops, you're still here.
i mean team paul. go team paul!
And you call me fickle!
aren't you asleep yet?
i'm supporting Jeremy cause he seems to have gained and lost a supporter in the space of a few comments.
actually... do either Jeremy or Paul support Jenson?... *ehem*...
Charming :P
Paul, cor, he's the biggest Jenson fan down under...
:D
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/03/23/and-we-have-a-winner/
Your wish is my command.
Night all.
That Mr C is impressive...
Night Mrs C
Night!
night Christine! :)
Good night
Heehee, I love the reference on today's Big Picture :D
:)
And I'm back - I'm cooking up some tea, there are irritating people on the radio and I've just finished writing for the night.
How is everyone?
evening everyone!
Evening Rocket
Hiya rocket
Evenin
and cheerio from me. Night and lotsa love.
Hello
ooo i just looked at Spa GP tickets online. There appears to be a slight discount available at the moment.. it's not much, for some grandstands it's as little as 15€ ... but that's better than nothing.
However i did realize, having no experience of buying f1 tickets, that i have no idea what i'm doing. In the way that if i buy a ticket for a grandstand for a Sunday.. is that just a sunday ticket? or goes it include GA for the other days?... and do i want just GA for all three days? or the same grandstand for all days?.. this is more complicated than i thought it would be.
Night RG
hello!
night
night RG
hey rrh, bye rg.
or should that be rh?
Night RG
i think i would have a dilema too - i really want to go to a GP - my hubby said that if i get the bonus work might possibly give out i could use it to get tickets to one!
Gavin and me have GA tickets for the whole tickets, Bassano, Amy ... have grandstand tickets for eau rouge. If you want to sit with them you have to ask Bassano for their booking number (or sth) and then you#ll get a seat close/next to them.
or rr...:)
ah okay... but... but... is that for all of the weekend? and are weekend tickets all 3 days, or just saturday and sunday? where will i get best photos? from a grandstand or GA? help me people who have been to Grand Prix before!..
ohhh............. chuff
can i start over pls?
bye rg, hi rr.
:D
Weekend tickets should include the Friday too I'm pretty sure. What site are you buying from?
i'll book them tomorrow. but the official Spa site seems to be the best.
Good evening
Hey Pat
hi.
What did I miss? It's a bit cold 'ere.
nowt much
You're coming to Spa?? Cool. :)
The granstand seats are for Sat and Sun, and include Friday GA. That's what I've got.
soz, we're trying to economise. i'll stick 50p in the meter.
Fair enough :)
That will not last long right now Mr C
Heheh. I blame the rain.
hey
You are giving him free McDonalds. Save the electricity
You should double check. I'll have a look see if it explains clearly anywhere. It'd really suck to be left outside....
hopefully.. well it's been promised to me as a bit of a late 18th birthday pressie. ooooh! okay that sounds good, thanks :)
Hi. New face?
I'm thinking of raffling off tickets to my kitchen where the Belgium GP will be broadcast lo-fi on my website. Any takers??
can anyone split a fiver?
I get free McDonalds?
Another member of the Button fan club. She has very quickly become a resident here
I have my 'e-ticket' and am waiting in line at 'bag drop'. Plane leaves in 1 hour 45 mins. I am too early!
Don't make me think about chips! I'm having THE worst cravings.... Bad enough to tempt me to go out in the rain and buy some in my pjs :P
i'll check with Dad before we go buying anything i think :) but i'm all of a sudden very excited about it.
*prods Lukeh* you should buy your tickets soon too... :P
I've got 50p in my pocket. But it's either heat or a Wispa.
I mean, heat's great and all....
hi - been around for about a week now, on and off
Ah good, welcome. I notice the latter seems to happen a lot, I like it :)
i'd go wispa any day
Do they not make you check in very early? Last time I flew I had to get my bags checked 90 minutes before departure.
yay for the Button fan club! :) mwahaha :)
oh that reminds me, I had a dream that Jenson won the Australian GP and Hamilton crashed out in a battle with Schumi. A Jenson, Alonso, Rubens podium was awesome..
You missed the earlier conversation from the Australian Top Gear race. Paul and Jeremy are heading to Melbourne by different types of transport. Paul stopped at McDonalds and announced it had free sidepodcast so the suggestion was made that sidepodcast should have free McDonalds
:D
I knoooooooow i know. I have a big sign on my shelf reminding me. I will buy them... I still need to properly sort out Goodwood let alone Spa. :( My mind is a rubbish mixture of things to do at the moment, gah.
You are having cravings? ;)
sort out Spa first... Spa is more likely to sell out sooner... plus it's more expensive :P
No. Just no.
Ah I see. Sort of..
30 mins for domestic here in Aus
ooh - u never know! i had cravings for chilli peppers when i was! :)
as my mind is also on Spa atm, can we have a 'race to spa'? Cause i believe some are wanting to go by car, and others by train?
which album?
when i read my comment back i just knew someone would...
hehehehe (hearts) red hot chili peppers
sorry, i'm just filling in for alex until he returns.
:D
Pretty much just as I took a commenting break then.
Whose side are you on?? :P
Jeremy i may be able to get you in this afternoon. Just realised I have four advantage tickets.
probably
sorry - girls rule, boys drool!
:D
gosh i'm freezing - where'd all the heat go?
lukeh picked the wispa.
Towards my Wispa
:D
well he didn't give me any...
I'm home from my holiday in Spain as you probably guessed. I needed the break, nice and relaxed now, even though there was a lot of walking and exploring of the area. The exercise and healthy food certainly helped (my sister is a veggie). It took me a couple of days to break the internet habit, glad I did as I needed to have some offline-time.
I'll put pics up on Picasa later in the week for anyone who wants to see 'em.
<3 Masterchef <3
I should have got rolos, I knew I should have gone for rolos!
who would have got your last one?
The elephant.
Is this some kind of conspiracy to make my healthy eating head explode?
Amazon is eeeeevil. They damaged the box of the netbook I would really quite like to have and offered it for €90 less than normal price. I am now a very very broke girl.
Pat took it
sorry - i just fancy some chocolate
Hmmmmm...
>:(
If you like a lotta chocolate on your biscuit...
At least you have Finnish internet
i'm nice and warm... my laptop is boiling. However i'm feeling really rather yucky and under the weather for some reason. Not felt this sick in a while :s
i've joined the club already!
Boo :( it's the london feeling returning! whenever you go to london to come back feeling icky!
How was the conference today anyways?
Yeah sorry, needed it elsewhere and I think I forgot to pack it when I came home.
I've said this before. I can't go to London without getting sick!
aww, hope you feel better soon
oooh.... you wouldn't be planning a wedding anytime soon would ya?
cause, y'know, if there's planning to be done, we can totally help.
honest.
nooo it's not a migrane.. it's just like a stomach bug :(
omg it was awesome! Philip Zimbardo is the coolest 77 year old i have ever met. The fact that he's starting new research at that age after such a busy busy life is incredible. It was a joy to hear him talk, then again i find the Lucifer Effect really interesting anyway.
i love london, but i think it hates me.
i'm sure London doesn't have a conspiracy against you ;)
what an earth is the lucifer effect?
I love London. I had major stress earlier about my train tickets though. They sent me tickets with the wrong date on and were going to charge me a fortune to swap them. I was sure that it was their error so I kept whining and eventually it turns out that I had the right tickets and the date goes funny if the train journey goes beyond midnight. I'm not sure why the first people didn't say this rather than being all rude and basically calling me stupid and trying to charge me a fortune.
Something to do with good people turning bad... I think. I'll leave lou to explain it :)
no - just planning a baby - don't think you can help with that...
I tend to just be bored in London. It doesn't hate me and I hate it - we just have general apathy for eachother
some awesome things have happened to me in london.. like meeting Jenson and Michael McIntyre... but equally it's been really horrible, the IMAX gave me the.worst.migraine.ever lol, i always seem to come back ill from London, so i conclude it doesn't like me :P
Me and lou seem to have developed a little talent where we can wander and wander, and be completely lost in london, then turn up where we started or need to be, it's quite useful ;)
It's part of the hard sell to get people to sign to premium. They want to keep newer or other albums on a higher tier with higher quality mp3's, because they feel that's what will make folk sign up. {Comment #269}
I'm glad last.fm doesn't do that...
erm... help!
Don't look at me!
:D
Yet.......
i must be mad anyway - already got a 10 month old!
it has a really annoying habit of swapping tracks i know, with remixes of tracks i know. but pretending they are the originals.
it's a psychological theory that states that a situation has the power over an individual whereby it can make a 'good' person do bad/ 'evil' things. Zimbardo developed it after a particularly unethical study he conducted called the Stanford Prison Experiment. It helps to explain how lack of order and structural authority can lead to people doing incredibly awful things. Such as the American soldiers in Abu Grad... and even to an extent the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany.
psychology is very interesting.
oooh, actually we're quite good at names.
That's errrrm brave?
you are wrong. we are never lost, just wandering.... not lost ;)
well - i almost called my son jenson - but he didn't look like a jenson - so he's eddie instead!
:)
jordan? or irvine?
ah, yes :D
Oh God.... not Jordan......
Push?
Jordan - he was born during last season! my hubby wanted to call him ayrton, but that's not a name for an essex boy really...
take for example next tuesday. I garentee we'll be taking a longer route to the recording studios.. which will have nothing to do with Em, nay and my lack of navigational skills.. we wont be lost, just wandering in the general direction ;)
Has he looked at the FIA or F1? Seems like he would get a lot of good research data
Is your son's middle name Mika per chance?
Mindless torture of fans??
I will just keep my eye out for the little green man at the crossings. I feel I am improving at my general try-not-to-get-run-overness. :)
You going to make a record?
no :D
no :D but my hubby was named after jody scheckter
:D hehehe
I was thinking of all the corrupt megalomaniacs he would find
ah yes... i nearly got run over today, that was interesting.
hahaha erm no. We're going to a recording of Russell Howard's good news programme :D
i love that programme
me too! :D
I wont move into the new daily because i'm off to sleep now, i feel awful :( i have an interview on friday, so i hope this is only a passing thing. night all! xx

Hope you feel better. I'm off too, need sleep after travelling since 7.30am CET.
Night lou, hope you feel better tomorrow :)
night lou, hope u feel better soon - i think i will have to go soon too - need sleep
case in point. we effectively have a recording studio in our house. we just chose to make an f1 podcast. if we'd decided to write music, would we need a record company any more?
So you are saying that if you chose to do so you could make money from Felipe Baby for instance? {Comment #288}
It would be very easy to do that to a certain extent of money-making. (though perhaps not with Felipe Baby specifically, since it's available for free already). As Christine and Mr C have amply demonstrated on numerous occasions, they have good enough recording equipment.
In Christine they have a good enough singer to make a song that people would be willing to pay for, and in Mr C they have someone who can get the technical bits talking long enough to get it recorded.
Both of them have enough experience editing sound that a few minutes of music would pose little trouble.
This blog is popular enough to start a meme, which these days is all the marketing a minor hit needs (a Top 40 one might need something more, but I don't know the music industry enough to say).
There are places where you can sell music online after submitting it yourself (last.fm is one, I believe iTunes is another, but other options probably exist by the dozen by now).
All Mr and Mrs C might need (and it is a might) is a session musician or two, an idea and a method of doing all this without it turning into something that makes them uncomfortable.
Night Lou
hehe. we can both play, although we must be rusty :)
it has a really annoying habit of swapping tracks i know, with remixes of tracks i know. but pretending they are the originals. {Comment #603}
I've noticed that too. While I'm sure some of it is people not labelling their remixes properly, someone at last.fm should be able to tell the difference between an original and a re-mix - or failing that, a computer program should be able to pick up the version in the database closest to the length given in the database entry as the correct one for that song (those of you who don't use last.fm may be surprised to know that when it pulls the remix-instead-of-original trick, it puts the original track's length on the toolbar even when the remix is much, much longer). Sometimes they're improvements, but when they're ultra-long dance tracks replacing regular pop, I feel like tearing the little toolbar out of my computer and lobbing it across the room...

Well then, that's your sidepodmusic careers sorted - and not a X Factor, $imon Cowell or tacky phone-in vote in sight :D
Sorry my headping was broken.
