Monday has returned and we're at the start of a brand new week. Mr C wasn't feeling too well yesterday, so we decided not to do an F1 Debrief show - there wasn't an enormous amount of news to cover anyways. I blame the over-excitement of the Crashed Ice thing, but he suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, here are some of the things we've been talking about this weekend:

  • Yesterday we started our mission to review all the driver and team websites for the 2010 season, with the first six completed. Mr C and I both review the sites, with his focus more on the technical side of things, including mobile devices and load times, whilst I just gush about whether they have Twitter accounts and photos on the site. We'll be posting these throughout the week so let us know your thoughts on the sites we have reviewed.
  • Giggles Radio has reached the letter H already, and the replay for Sunday's night show is up on the site with the playlist available as well. It's always worth a listen if you have time, as the mixture of great music and Giggles rather amusing links between the songs makes the hours just fly by.
  • Finally, we're keen to be more positive about F1 after the Bahrain weekend, and as Australia is coming up, we looked at ten reasons why F1 in Aus won't suck. I hope you can add to our list of reasons in the comments, it's almost like the F1 Happy Place but for a specific race instead.

That should do it for now. I hope your Monday is going okay, and as always, I will see you in the comments.

    How did that happen?

  • Jon Waldock22/03/2010 at 00:40

    How did that happen?

Well....every 24 hours, (an hour is 60 minutes), theres a new thing, called a day, and after sunday comes monday.

    So today its monday.

  • Bassano22/03/2010 at 00:40

    How did that happen?

You'd think we'd get good at estimating the approach of midnight but it never happens

i know exactly when midnight is, because my internet dies for 2 minutes at 11.59pm every day!

    I thought it was about 10 o'clock

Sorry to just barge on in here with a question - but could someone please point me to the customised itunes subscription page? The one where Mrs. C. lays out which 'feeds' have which podcast in them? It might even be RSS feeds, not itunes subs.

    Thank you very much.

So paul will you make it in time for the behind the scenes after your 647km drive?

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 01:00

Is 4500 words on what F1 should be like too long for a guest post?

  • Jon Waldock22/03/2010 at 01:00

    Just over 6

  • Jon Waldock22/03/2010 at 01:01

oh of course, sorry, all my work has to be double spaced.

  • paul22/03/2010 at 01:07

I really hope so. The plan is to get there around 3:30, 4pm which should be OK.

Sounds like a series to me.

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 01:09

Unforunately it won't work like that. Everything is linked to everything else and I wouldn't be able to answer comments on one part without pointing at other parts. I knew it wa going to be long but not that long and while I could very easily make it a lot longer there is not a lot I can do to make it any shorter

You will have to choose your timing then. Sometime when there is a decent break between races. Sounds like something which will provoke a lot of debate.

  • Amy22/03/2010 at 01:13

Sounds good. You might even beat me there. I am at work til 4 but might ask my boss if i can leave at 330 instead and have a shorter lunch. Takes about 35-40 min to get there from here so i wont miss too much, after going last year i can zip through most of it pretty quickly

My plan had been to finish it for Thursday so that it would have been up this weekend so that it would provoke some discussion and maybe eliminate some of the negativity people have for the new season before Melbourne but it just took too long to write

Any tips on what to see? I don't want to be just wandering around.

  • Amy22/03/2010 at 01:21

You dont really get a chance to wander, they have a path set up that you follow along to the v8 paddock then down the pit lane. People tend to mingle there a bit but most teams have screens up. After that everyone heads over to where they have a stage set up for interviews. They start quite a bit later but i sat down quite early to guarantee a good spot.

  • paul22/03/2010 at 01:24

OK, well I hope I make it.

  • Amy22/03/2010 at 01:30

I hope you do too. Last year it was my brother's (also named paul ooh spooky) first experience of f1 and he really enjoyed the chance to get a bit closer. The safety cars were his favourite i think, judging by how many pictures he took

and for those at the track the predicted highs for the four days are 29, 29, 26, 28. When I looked yesterday they were saying 31 for Saturday so it could be a hot one.

I think it's probably at least a two-parter, depending on context.

If you have too much info contained in it, people will complain that it is too long...

OK, whatever, hot or cold, for me the important part is the word "nice". What we have here today is definitely not nice ... the API (air pollution index) is normal when the reading are around 20, it is high when it read over 50. when it gets to 100, people with some respiratory of heart problems are advised to stay home. The maximum the machines can read over here is 500. The readings today are 495 ...

but frankly, this Epsilon is nothing new, the same Joe wrote similar stuff about them last year, before the Campos Manor USF1 trio got selected. I think he considered them and Prodrive as the fittest candidates. Unfortunately not fit enough for FIA that time. The thing is they would need to do something about that funding. Among other things FIA requires the candidates to show them the money. And if Epsilon again goes in with that egg chicken scenario the resull may be the same as in 2009 ...

And yet Campos and USF1 failed for that reason entirely, we are led to believe.

If Epsilon plan to use a Cosworth engine this time then they should get in...

I thought there would be at least one Aussie here watching the comedy gala, but my guess failed :(

  • Jeremy22/03/2010 at 10:46

I am way too amused by this puppet.

Zoe doesn't like puppets so i skipped that bit. I thought I heard a bit of a Mrs Doubtfire voice

I hate that the Gala makes me think I should go check out lots of these people because then I never do and I regret missing the comedy festival :D

last year I went to Steve Coogan though and I must say, seeing Alan Partridge (a ha) in person fulfilled a dream I wasn't totally aware I had.

Mark Webber was in Queanbeyan/Canberra this week and turned up at his old stomping ground the kart track on Friday out near Queanbeyan where my boss' two sons spent three hours hanging out with him. I was sooo jealous. And tonight he was at the Raiders vs Broncos rugby league game here in Canberra which I attended. So was the PM but then he's here a lot anyway. Great having Mark about for this big week.

You would hope that youd suddenly realise that you'd a) considerably slowed and b) the gear you were pulling was struggling

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 14:28

You could well under those circumstances think there was a problem with your engine and accelerate harder though. It would never pop into my head that I could be dragging something along if my car started to struggle.

If it was dragging then maybe, but it's pushing it along. It's just below his cab.

Wednesday: Webber will allow other F1 stars to take the limelight. Massive surge in ticket sales expected as the media flocks to see Nico Hulkenberg in a go-kart, Sebastien Vettel learn to throw a boomerang (I repeat, I am not making this up), Vitantonio Liuizzi eat Italian food and a bunch of others playing poker with Joe Hachem.

Just heard on Twit that Leo is going to have someone start a new show - This Week in Space - and they will live stream all the launches. Is it just me or is his timing just a little out when NASA only has three more shuttle launches then no manned missions for at least 7 years?

If you end up without a place have you considered contacting some photographers and offering to work cheap for a year to get experience?

sounds like you need to be on that show!

  • lou22/03/2010 at 17:51

yeah, and that's exactly what i'll do i think. Try get loads of experience and help myself on the way up.. but i have a horrible feeling that if that happens and goes well i'll never go to uni. Which itself isn't awful, but i can't help thinking i would really really like a degree..

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 17:51

They have some bloke who is a proper space expert. He is called Miles O'Brien which wa also the name of the bloke who was an engineer in a couple of Star Trek series

The uni experience would be good for you but if you find a great opportunity and you have the choice of staying there or going back to uni and maybe losing that position then forgt uni then. You just have to play the cards you are dealt.

  • lou22/03/2010 at 17:57

Does the university application system allow you any way to apply to other unis if you don't get any of the places you originally applied for? I assume some courses end up under-subscribed if they offer places to people who then take up different offers

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 18:06

Yeah, if you receive no offers you can apply through extra which gives you 2(?) applications to courses listed as undersubscribed. Then there's clearing which happens in the summer after results which is basically an insane free for all again on under-filled courses.

  • lou22/03/2010 at 18:07

I'm not sure how it works on creative subjects though..

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 18:07

I'm not sure on the numbers, the details have changed since I applied but the premise is the same.

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 18:08

I'm not sure how it works on creative subjects though..

Ooooh did you make an application via the alternative route?

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 18:09

Ooooh did you make an application via the alternative route?

That would make it different. I suspect you made a standard UCAS application though? I'd have to look up some files I have if you did. I used to give talks about this in schools unfortunately the salient information appears to have vacated my head.

  • lou22/03/2010 at 18:09

Ooooh did you make an application via the alternative route?

no.. but most if not all art courses require interview before they'll accept you, as they need to see your work.

  • Alison22/03/2010 at 18:12

no.. but most if not all art courses require interview before they'll accept you, as they need to see your work.

Okay, extra allows for interviews and works in exactly the same way as your initial application. You can only enter extra once you've had replies from all your universities and have received no offers/declined all the offers you received. You then can send off your application to further courses that are advertised as having extra vacancies. They can then invite you to send off portfolios/interview as before.

  • Nick in Dubai22/03/2010 at 18:14

Its weird i know, but they will be keen to get their courses as full as they can

Right I found my sheet. You make applications to extra one at a time. You send off your original application (you're not allowed to make any changes to it) via the online service. They have 21 days to respond to you after that you can apply to somewhere else. This can go on up until 30th June

  • Jackie22/03/2010 at 18:18

As long as it doesn't fall into rambling and creates good points with solid arguments, then word count shouldn't be too much of an issue I think.

Are you feeling better Mr C?

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 18:45

As long as it doesn't fall into rambling and creates good points with solid arguments, then word count shouldn't be too much of an issue I think.

I knew it was going to be long when I started it but not that long. The trouble is that so many different aspects are linked so it has to exist as a whole. Someone last night suggested making a series but as soon as the comments started to come in I would be refering to later parts so that wouldn't work. It doesn't ramble on any particular point because there are so many different points covered. I could easily make it several times longer but I don't think I could cut more than a couple of hundred words from it but there is not point in doing that.

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 18:46

    nope.

but Polaroid photography is gaining in popularity at the moment. I'd love it if i could find some cheap film for our old polaroid camera.. or if i could buy a new camera. I know there are some instant cameras that print instantly.. but they just aren't the same as the cute appearance of a Polaroid photo.

not really, but there are several photographers that work exclusively in polaroid... well they like to. Plus generally there has been a rise in their popularity. I've had several people asking me where they can buy 'old fashioned' polariod cameras just recently. At times they seem more popular than digital cameras.

It was a great idea to have a camera that gave instant pictures but it doesn't have the sharing options that digital has. I can understand why people like it though. Passing round a digital camera so that people can look at the pic that has just been taken is not the same

Did Bernie tell Spa to build it like Donington and they took it too literally?

If I was them that is exactly what I would be saying too but tunnels don't collapse for no reason so either it had a structuarl failure or there is a problem with the ground. Either of those could end up wih all sorts of implications and complications.

The tunnel's been there for about 30 years, but for some reason the structure collapsed this morning.

  • Steven Roy22/03/2010 at 23:01

I met James Hunt at Silverstone years ago. Without a doubt the single least impressive human being I have ever met and he had this dopey alsation with him that walked behind him like it weighed a ton and as soon as he stopped it dropped like it had been shot.

Met Jackie Stewart at Knockhill a couple of years ago. What a pro. Worked his butt off all day to keep his fans happy.

Most famous person I have been up close to though is Gorbachev. Came round the corner in a hotel in Moscow and ended up nose to nose with him. It's amazing what goes through your mind in the second that follows that. Mainly those huge guys either side of him seem to have huge bulges in their jackets

  • lou22/03/2010 at 23:01

I always thought he would be really grumpy in real life

  • Lukeh22/03/2010 at 23:02

i had about 2 hours worth of building up to it... he was just too friendly not to talk to, lol :)

I'm glad we didnt take 2 hours to decide over Michael McIntyre ;)

  • lou22/03/2010 at 23:03

you didn't give me a chance! you just pulled me after him! you did all the talking though, so that's fine. lol

I only met him for two minutes. Now David O'Leary....

I met James Hunt at Silverstone years ago. Without a doubt the single least impressive human being I have ever met and he had this dopey alsation with him that walked behind him like it weighed a ton and as soon as he stopped it dropped like it had been shot.

    Ahhhh...

    He had a cute dog...

Met Jackie Stewart at Knockhill a couple of years ago. What a pro. Worked his butt off all day to keep his fans happy.

Jackie is funny at GPs... he hangs out at Williams (well he used to) and rushes out to talk to anyone who was in the pitlane.... it was more difficult not to get your photo taken with him...

But he sure does the biz for the sponsors....

  • RocketRedhead22/03/2010 at 23:05

When I was mascot for Spurs I met legends such as Jol, Carrick and ahem, Sorensen. Sadly it was the one game Edgar Davids was injured.

i've met quite a few footballers - i got married at Upton Park and when i went for meeting there they had an open training session on

He spent ages with the fans when I saw him at Goodwood, despite his PA trying to rush him on

It was definitely not cute. It looked like a mangy fleabag that thought breathing was just too much effort

:) i basically worked out a script in my head tbh.. lol i got totally star struck when i met his dad strangely enough.. lol

Did you notice the weird face he pulls when he poses for a photo. It looks most odd in real life but when you see it in a picture it looks like he is just starting to laugh. When I first saw him do it I thought he was in a bad mood but like everything else he does he has found out the best way to look in a photo. WOnder how many modern drivers put that much thought in.

  • lou22/03/2010 at 23:08

omg!! how is it possible to have 34 photocalls and 14 deadlines in one day! press days for motorsport photographers seem to be absolutely crazy!!!

i (heart) that the 3rd year uni student i met at Falmouth is so friendly, and happy to email me all the time. :)

I've been to so many motor sport events over the years as a spectator and competitor that I'm worried it won't live up to the hype. But everybody says it will and meeting Paul, Amy, Wolf etc will be awesome

i've never been to a GP and only very few motorsport events - sadly can't afford it

I cant afford to compete anymore even though club level stuff is relatively cheap.

I started attending events within weeks of getting my provisional licence. I went by myself because nobody else was interested and all my money went on petrol and entry fees which thankfully were a lot cheaper in those days

It was pretty fun. Everyone was severely rusty, only four people out of 100+ had four clean runs w/out hitting any cones. I came in 4th in my class.

I'm listed as my name, Jim Newman, on NON BMW 4 group. I was surprised at some of the cars in other classes that I beat with my little Toyota Corolla.

    I did 22 :D

Even after I got the last two lines, I couldn't tell you how they were related though.....

  • Alison23/03/2010 at 00:16

  • Steven Roy23/03/2010 at 00:19

Out of the 5 new ones I managed one completely and one without knowing one of the connections and failed miserably on the other three. The reason I didn't get the connection is because it is inantile and I is way too intelligent to think to that level. ;)
