Here we are at Thursday, and it's time to start thinking about the weekend. It's the last free weekend before the end of the season, when there will be weeks without racing, and we'll finally be able to get stuff done. Here's some of the news from today:
- John Howett of Toyota has said that Kobayashi has certainly done enough to become a contender for a race seat in 2010, although he stops short of confirming anything. Presumably, with them saying Raikkonen is too expensive (with the size of their budget?), Kobayashi is a little bit more within their price range.
- The FIA have approved the Monaco date change, meaning it will be moved forward a week. That will appease the teams who were worried about it's proximity to Turkey. There will now be a two week break instead of the back to back that was initially proposed. I wonder how many other changes we'll see to this "official" calendar.
- Finally, Webber has been thinking about the future and believes the big improvements he's shown this year, including finally getting his hands on a race winning trophy, will propel him to fight for the championship properly next year. He is happy to admit that this year he lacked consistency and that's what he needs for 2010.
That'll do it for now. Let us know how you are coping with Terrible Thursday, and particularly let us know if you have any chocolate. I'll see you in the comments.
quick reminder...

Oooh, shall try and remember about that. Inevitably will forget though.
Ah i am home :D
How did the quiz go?
It went well. Its here : http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1464
And on that, night all. lotsa love.
night rg.
I think the university hates me....
I only have ethernet cable internet, and so bought a wireless router to plug it into, then i'd password it so only i could use it, but they've used some sort of magic trickery to block all their internets coming out wireless routers, boooo
is that possible?
hehe we did that so only one of us had to pay, they caught on but never stopped us! :D
ours comes free so i dont know why they do it
they decided they needed mac codes and all sorts of details I had never heard of after we were caught
that is ridiculous, how much info did they take before you got it?
apparently so;
it all set up properly, and my computer recognised it as wireless and the network i set it as, but when i tried to use a web browser it comes up with "an external internet-y-doohickey has been recognised, this may be in the form of modem or a wireless router, these are prohibited"
boooo
wow. meanies.
just the usual uni stuff, name address, number, email yada yada yada, nothing specifically for internet
have you asked about it?
totally. so now im going to have to buy a ethernet extender cable, but its still got a wire!! means i cant sit in kitchen with my laptop and be talk to people whilst im doing stuff, its sooooo annoying.
this university does lots of little things like that to stop you being social (probably not the actual reason, but it feels like it), its soooo frustrating
i might do, its very annoying.
I think I shall join you in tomorrow.
To be fair you should probably be in the hall bar with a pint at that point ;) :P
Are you leaving or jumping threads?
we dont have a hall bar :(
Leaving forever. I'm so deeply offended.
FAIL
FAIL
FAIL
I was about to offer you travel advice for india...
I'm only in India 5 days. Whistlestop tour. It's just a stopover.
Fair enough... do you like curry?
For the record, you could have had my icecream if you'd fixed my boiler.
The boiler man (sans orange drill) has "fixed" it so it's permanently on. My gas bill is going to make me cry.
They have curry in India?
I tried...
While I was out.....?
You are leaving the country so the gas bill shouldn't be a problem
exactly!!
plus all the flats in the hall are locked off so you have to have a key to get in each, so you cant just walk into someones kitchen and say hi. It's like a prison, in fact its worse
Hahahaha good advice.
Strongly worded email sent! ;)
I told you to go press some buttons...
This aspect is normal. You have to protect your foodstuffs!! It's bad not to have a common room or bar or something though.
I was catered in my first year. We basically met people by sitting down next to each other at dinner and being forced to speak.
Is there at least another hall bar/union/pub within a 2-3 min walk?
each cupboard has a lock on it, and in most halls the kitchen does too, i just want to be able to walk around and say hi to people i dont know, it makes it really hard to how it is here.
there's no catered here :(
union is about a 5 minute walk and is only really open at night.
im more of a pub man to be honest
I concur. But it was more at the hall bar, and a guy coming into my room on the first afternoon and being amazed that i wasnt interested in his smoking materials and that i didnt think Marx was a legend.
He is now one of my best friends :D
This is not helpful advice. I can mash at a keypad without your assistance!
I had a conversation with someone who's cat was clearly near him, all i got was..
////////////////////////////b,sdfsn.f
I guess it depends on your uniou, ours had 4-5 bars and the main one was a pub, many a great evening discussing the finer points of US policy in the Midle east in the early 1970's in there...
i really missit!
But you may not have thought of doing that
I had to convince you to get out of bed though...
...and still no sign of the paper mache!
Most uni internet connections are really retentive about what can connect to them. Mine insisted on scanning my computer daily before I was allowed to connect.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if i leave the ethernet cable in when i turn my computer on the internet wont work until ive turned it back off unplugged it, then turned it back on, then put it back in.
:D
best not mension the paper mache ;)
It also mystically knew when I replaced my laptop. It was all quite creepy. I don't think I could have tricked it though. They did, however, provide us with wifi as well though.
It was a big tease...
That's because every computer has a unique address wired into the network hardware.
And there was me thinking you were interested in my life....
hehe, i tried to fix your boiler
I wasnt invited out, and to top it all off you didnt tke up my geneours offer of trading for one of the tastiest B&J flavouers around! :D
We are only interested in the ice cream, paranoia and papier maché
Noooo. You're like my personal Michel reminding head ping.
I still have no idea who this guy who cant spell his name is...
You don't listen to me at all!!!!!!
OK Jon, try plugging your computer into the belkin router making sure that the router is not plugged into the Internet link. You should be able to gain access to the router admin pages via a web browser.
SOmewhere on those pages will be an option to use the PC's MAC address for the Router (if you give me the exact model I'll look up the manual).
Choose this setting, save it, restart the router and plug it in to the Internet link.
That will make the router pretend it's the PC. Of course there may be other measures in place to stop this working and you may risk losing your access if you are found out.
1 hour ten minutes till Michel
Michel Roux junior. One of the best chefs in the world. Son of Michel and Albert Roux.
:D
Did you know that Michel has run the London marathon 17 times?
Nope. Which one is his father?
Nick this is Michel's restaurant! You can read all about him.....
http://www.le-gavroche.co.uk/
Albert Roux.
ah... is he a judge then?
Father of La Roux?
#NotHere
He indeed is a judge on professional Masterchef.
There seems to be a lot of fish... I am more of a land animal kind of guy...
Errrr Nick both Michel Sr and Albert are men.....
Thats not my fault!
Besides... thats no good reason to only cook seafood!
He likes it. He can cook what he likes! I'm veggie. It's not really to my taste either..... :P
It also tells me they are brothers?
Yes. Albert is Michel Jr's father.
veggie! ...eeek!
I guess i can deal with it though... *looks for a steak*
:( :( :(
I have a vegan stepsister, dont worry i am not going to flip out!
Flip out all you want!
Your sister is from the same planet as Spock?
Oooooh ooooh ooooh Michel has cookery books!!! Why don't I own these?
hehe at least you eat icecream ;)
I eat whatever I want. I just don't feel like eating meat and I've never liked fish so I don't. Other than icecream and cheese, I don't have a whole lot of dairy.
That may be the best explanation i have heard! :D
:(
Boooo
I love that Michel sends the contestants out to other people's michelin standard restaurants but he won't let them in his own....
Yeah sorry. I didn't think it would work....
Shmeh, i didn't either.
Longer ethernet cable for me!
Have any of them been to Hestons place? I really want to go there!
I have one of those!!!! :D
Did you get into the routers menus at least?
Yup, sorted it all, then tried it again and it did the same as last time.
Not as far as I can remember. Tbh I'm more of a gastropub girl. Wasn't that shut down because loads of people pretended to have food poisoning?
I found a 10m one so that should probably be long enough ;)
Pah. I'd post you my cable if you wanted. It probably would arrive some time next year though....
haha gotta love the royal mail at the moment.
My favourite bit was when they got lots of new temp staff to cover the loss of work for the striking ones. oh that made me smile
hehe i have never heard anyone call themselves that!
I think it is a technicaly a gastro pub.
I have been to one of Worral-thompsons pubs, one of my friends lives a couple of country lanes away. Best stoganoff EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Annoying, but it was worth a try. Sadly it seems the University network is cleverer than most ISPs :(
Night all.
Thanks for trying anyway :)
Night Andy
:(
Its not a bad thing!
It's no use backtracking now!
http://www.atsite.co.uk/images/PRODUCT/large/7470.jpg
any use?
That isn't going to fix my boiler!
nah, just give it a good wack and you'll be away
Right, i actually need to sleep. I have no idea what im still doing up!!
Night all
You just want me to break it completely again so I won't want my icecream anymore.
I don't want your ice cream, it'd be melted by the time I got it.
Your a few zones out from Zone 7
Hehe... it means your classy!
;)
You really are a meanie.
So Button has 7 carrer wins... is that the least of anyone when they became world chamipon?
I paid you a compliment!
*plays disney music*
Are you sure?
Yes!
Also I'm a bit disneyed out today having just been to the cinema.
what did you see?
Up in 3D
It was AMAZING! I loved it so much. I got very overexcited in the film.
hehe better than the kid in colorado then?
I really should go to the cinema more...
My sister works one night a week at the cinema in a cunning ploy to get in for free.
I would look a bit silly if i went on my own to often though....
Doubt it. Did Keke Rosberg ever get that many? He only won one in his championship season as did Mike Hawthorn. I don't think Hawthorn won many races either althout there were not as many then. Phil Hill would not have won many either.
Just a question. Is LewHam still the WC until after Abu Dhabi results are confirmed?
Until the FIA gala in November
Okay cool. Just checking!
http://www.pitlanefanatic.com/blog/
Awwww! Come to Carlisle. I'm sure she'd take you!
cheers steven, just having a lok...
keke has 5 career wins...
Hawthorn only had 3
Phill hill only had 3 as well...
Quite suprising... I wonder which driver won the most championship races over his carrer without winning the world championship?
Its a fair trek!
scrub that, not quite te question you're asking.
as you were.
It's a really good article though. I feel enlightened.
Huge oops!
sorry pitmonster/jacke/maverick!
no but i should have remembered that!
That is a difficult one. Moss won 16 which may stil be the record. It was therecord by a long way in his day
I was about to say Moss. I couldn't quite believe I might know something other people wanted to know though. I don't think DC was far behind....
Looking at this list it does appear to be Moss
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_Grand_Prix_winners
Coultart appears to be next, with rubens just behind him
hehe got there just before me!
Oh yeah! Check me out :P
Dude that is knowledge from my head!!!
Looks like Moss still has the record
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_Grand_Prix_winners
I didn't think of DC. He won 13 and gave Hakkinen his first two wins so was close to Moss but started many more races
Must be the ice cream
Michel time
I didnt realise Heikki was the 100th GP winner... there is a stat for amy, if only she had a mobile doohickey ;)
This is an old Masterchef. I thought they showed the program that was on earlier tonight
How many race wins does Massa have? It's funny how many of the people with a lot of wins and no WC are modern. Is that just because we have more races?
Booooo! I'm just gonna go for some iplayer rerun therapy!
11... yes there are a lot more races now, but still not enough!
That is part of it. The other part is that there are a lot of dead people on the list of winners
I see. They would have gone on to win some more but poor safety meant they died in action. Is that what you're saying?
Oh Nick. Nick, nick nick....
Someone like Gilles Villeneuve was regarded by the other drivers as certainly the fastest driver around and maybe the best. He won 6 races but he only did 4 full seasons before he died. He would have won a lot more races.
Jochen Rindt was not very old when he became the only posthumous champion in 1970. Ronnie Peterson who was catching Moss's total when he was killed in 1978 etc etc etc
Unless you have a years like 2002 or 2004. There were way to many races those years.
I think we should be aiming for at least 25...
I object. I've decided I can't be doing with it.
You should start watching Nascar
me neither. 15 is the perfect amount.
I dont see why we shouldnt have more, a greater variety of tracks, the best allrounder would win.
I love watching the races, i dont see why people dont want more.
i am not saing we have one a week, but once every other week for most of the year would make sense to me
We don't have anything like enough good tracks as it is without adding more race which will just lead to more bad tracks appearing on the calendar.
i would respectfully suggest you first get a full-time job, and then see how the f1 season works out for you.
;)
15 would leave me desperate for more. Is that the idea?
haha, you have me there! :D
yup.
He'd just end up sleep deprived, like the rest of us
:D :D :D
true, but we are loosing good tracks because they cant afford to stay on the callendar, if the callendar was bigger we could keep them!
That's a problem with the management. The racing (or attendance for that matter) is of very little interest to them
Oi you!! :D
Don't look at me. I work like a very hardworking person.....
not true. we are loosing good tracks because the fees are too high and the business case doesn't add up.
It wouldn't make any difference. The cost of being on the calendar is due to inventive pricing and is nothing to do with cost.
Since we have a spare race this year, with the championship over, I think they should make it non-championship and mix things up a bit. Throw in test drivers or something
I doubt that we will ever see non-championship races again
I dont know if this has been posted...
Jake talking about his kiss and how all those cameras ended up in the brawn garage! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8319517.stm
Why? Because we don't have enough incompetent fools behind the wheel as it is?
They make it entertaining.
But it could let some of these GP2 and other drivers have a go - see what they are made of.
true, but the more events the lower the fees have to be to meet the targets... (although you might argue greed would ensure that doesnt happen) I still see more races meaning lower ticket prices, as well as more great circuits.
wouldnt it to be great to have both donnington and silverstone on the calendar?
We have had a WC two years in a row now. Surely that means we deserve the European GP.
I like that Jake got in the bit about no ads and with the Chain as the theme tune
I disagree massively.
You cant change the championship rules half way though the season, and besides how wouold you feel if you paid to go to the opening round of the season in melbourne and then 10 days before the race they decide it isnt quite what they feel like doing so it will be started at the next round?
Its hardley suprising we get empty stands at the newer venues when even the fans think the people who consider going should be treated with such contempt.
we dont even need to call it that, abu dhabi has set a modern precedent, call it the robin hood GP!
Maybe now the title is settled, I won't hold my breath everytime Jenson tries an overtaking move.
What about your other two? ;)
It hasn't worled like that so far. We used to have 15/16 races a season and now we have 18/19 and the ticket prices have gone up. The cost to everyone involved has gone up. You are applying real world economic principals to to Bernieworld.
It was a bit tongue-in-cheek. This last race will be a bit on a let down though.
Well obviously Sebastian knows what he's doing in that respect.... I'm not sure who else is involved. Fernando? He's finished about 2 races this season, I'm long beyond being nervous!
also not accounting for the human cost. more races manes two races teams or dead mechanics.
doesn't spell cheap to me. maybe we need a robot pit crew?
It also means more cars and everything that goes with that
I think Seb will want to win it to stick it to the man. I think Jenson feels he still has something to prove. Rubens wants to get his favourite position back..... What's not to like?
Second? :D
Where else? :P
What do you actually do with yourself Nick?
Thats true, but i think bernie will have only another season or 2 left in him, then its only a matter of time untill cvc sell, i think things will change.
No worries ;)
not necicarily, maybe more staff in the factory, the race team could be completly independent
So you think if someone who pays what CVC will want for the rights to F1will not have to charge a load of money to recover the cost of the purchase?
following your line of thinking... the teams take back control.
you think they'd double their workload and staff? i think they'd half it and make the races more exclusive.
Mysterious things ;)
But i get to take a break from it in less than a week! whoo!
Ron Dennis was talking about having two race teams for 19 races because of the amount of time people had to spend away from home.
Informative....
live comment.
maybe, i dont think they will take back control.
more races means more sponsor exposure though, and more tv revenue, as well as more circuit revenue (alternatly they could also keep circuit revenue the same and lower prices massivly and atract more fans who wil buy more merchandise...)
As i see it they would make more money
FACT
You should leave a voicemail for Joe on that point
I like to keep you guessing ;)
I dont think i could get him to agree more races would be better with the best argument in the world after his post today....
I was thinking more of if the teams should buy the ights back from CVC or is there someone he sees who should/would buy them
He kind of answered that before with his idea of a trust. I cant see the teams agreeing to any system which would pay for that...
I think it will probably be sold to investors, but more long term ones.
Ideally i think NASCAR should buy it
even though you don't watch nascar?
They are great at marketing and they know how to keep their fans happy.
nope, but they know how to run a business and most importantly they know how to look after the fans.
They are a long way from the perfect scenario, but they are the best buyers i can think of at the moment to take the sport into the future..
Anyone else that buys it wil be at the mercy of the banks, or just using it as an overactive cash cow like CVC
but they're not good enough to temp you to watch.
yet bernie is.
I am not suggesting they make f1 into NASCAR, just that they use their knowlege of running a motosport to run F1.
I do watch nascar from time to time, if i had a dish i would probably watch it more. Its a bit difficult to get into it when oval racing is such an alien concept to me and I am so far from the news or the hype.
maybe. they don't have a lot of international experience and it's easier to tailor something to a local crowd
Blimey I really do watch too much masterchef. I spent a good couple of minutes wondering what plates of food had to do with anything.... I was beginning to get concerned you were malnourished and in need of ice cream.
Thats true, but it would also take away the risk that nascar tries to start an international series which would be better run than F! and eventually kill it off like it dod to indy cars.
I think they would recognise what F1 is and why people watch it, rather than just see it as a means to make money regardless of the implications.
CVC have damaged the sport, it could probably have been worse, but F1 needs to avoid that again and have owners who want to own a motorspot, not an investment
fair point.
IF NASCAR got control of F1 they would not change the fundamentals of the sport and would not make it into a NASCAR clone.
for some reason i cant type in Ubuntu, perhaps chrome was correcting me this whole time and i didnt know it ;)
but if you want to bring me a tub of Ben and Jerries feel free! :D
Nick is really Richard Branson. (independently wealthy)
Hmmmm he was asking me for a job the other week :P
It's all mis-information
Gah! Now Apple are selling off the old iMacs really cheap! What is a guy to do?!
If only i had all those companies and the chance to sit on the brawn pitwall...
But alas no, i need a job...
cheap macs? where! i will have one!
Apple (here) are selling 24" (old model) at 42% off $1449 now, was $2600
they dont seem to be that cheap here, although a £499 macmini is tempting, or am i being fooled?
Branson has a job
Oh so harsh!
Is this beat up on nick night! ;)
Who knows. Things are different at different stores
I will have to go into a store and ask!
since i am apparently not doing anything, perhaps i should pop in tomorrow ;)
There there.
heard there's a good one in milton keynes.
I am suprised you havent dived in yet!
still, on my return from Dubai i hope to buy my spa tickets, and possibly grab that mac...
Hey!
Very good advisors in that one... It might be quite an adventure!
think i am up to late though to do it tomorrow, and i am due at the bank at half 11 to sort out some shenanigans with my credit card... might put in an advance complaint about their ATM's in dubai as well.
To be honest, I've left medical school so I can go and work in a shop. I'm not really in a position to comment on anyones life choices ;)
hehe i gave up a great job in aus which would have got me a visa for a job in london which disapeared before i got back in the country....
when life deals you lemons...
Having said that, if i get offered something when i am in Dubai I will be over the moon
on top of the moon.
Only if you are a Jenson fan
:D
Oooooh that's a possibility? Are you out there for that or would it be a happy by-product?
i might keep orbiting!
I have 2 meetings for other reasons, at which i plan to see if they can help me, failing that i might ask my dad for help when he arrives a few days later which is something i have always resisted doing.
You don't want to stay in London then?
Maybe, ideally perhaps i would, still Dubai is the closest thing i have to home, and if there is a job there i would take it in a heartbeat
Boo Apple boo. You give me too many choices
Surely just grey or white ;)
He has had enough of you I think.
:P
I resent that! I live very far from London I'll have you know.
hehehe she hasnt even come sidepodpubbing yet! although neither have you 2!
No, just Aluminum. But too many old or new iMac configurations
when did favicons become animated?
the skysports one just scared me!
always have been i think. at least in firefox.
ah, i jumped from IE to Chrome,
I have successfully camoflaged firefox to it looks almost identical to chrome
Eurgh. I really really suck at packing!
what are you packing?
My life up.....
hehe i was thinking a suitcase or a backpack... ;)
No. I'm trying to pack up my whole flat into boxes to go into storage. I also need to pack stuff to take abroad with me.
ah, now isnt that a fun process ;)
You will put stuff in the wrong boxes i guearentee it!
Are you leaving tomorrow?
I think it is bedtime for me...
Night all!
Hahahahaha!!! You better be kidding.
I'm leaving my flat on 2nd November, dumping boxes in storage, my car in a friend's garage. Going down to London to stay with some other friends and flying out of Heathrow on the 5th.
If you are in London for 3 days I can see someone taking you sidepodpubbing. He left at just the wrong moment.
Well I can tell you it's b***** hot here in Oz at the moment
Time I was in bed too. I will try to phone in a voicemail for Joe tomorrow.
Night all
Night Steven
Going where?
I am not here.
Has this been brought up? Another site linked to it. Behind the paywall though.
Busy Times Ahead in Paris
However, what I read had this FTA:
This is explosive stuff. From the looks of it, 2 of the new teams haven't signed this RRA yet, and that may allow Qadbak (who must have signed this back as BMW) back into the picture. I suspect said 2 teams in trouble are Lotus and Campos.
just buy the new 27 inch quad core and be done with it :-)
boooo attempted Kindle delivery on the one day I forgot to take my phone to work so couldn't be reached when they tried to call me :(
hooray, have called Lou at DHL (Who was not Lou from SPC) who will have it delivered to my work tomorrow :D
w00t w00t! Well done, Amy! :) Let us know how it goes. :D
Am playing podcast catchup now. All Jenson, all Button, all the time. ;)
my new desk is the one directly inside the door so I can tackle any DHL men I see coming. Although my back is to the door, I might have to work at a 90 degree angle all day :D
Go Go Go!
Kindle > my cell phone (which appears to be lost in the post, I am sure it doesn't take 5 days to get things to Melbourne)
Does it have your battery in it still?
Listening to the 5Live podcast, Ross credits Honda. Nice of him to give them a bit of PR.
I assume yes because my mother isn't the sort to ask them how to post things legally :(
Hmmm. I hope they didn't find out in the post and take it out of circulation...
:(
Maybe you've been affected by our postal strike?
I wonder if she sent it with a tracking number
ooh yes. From NZ, to Australia, via UK.
"Good news! Due to strong customer demand for our newest Kindle with U.S. and international wireless, we are consolidating our family of 6" Kindles. As part of this consolidation, we are lowering the price of the Kindle you just purchased from $279 down to $259. You don't need to do anything to get the lower price--we are automatically issuing you a $20 refund"
<3 Amazon.
Morning all. Finally got a stubborn eyelash out of my eye so I can stop blinking enough to comment.
Morning,
Button is selling his Veyron
So why was he paying for his own air travel if he had one of those? Didn't Top Gear prove the Veyron was faster than air travel?
Is it a Thursday?
It really is!
Well my train was late... so yes!
Morning :)
So my Windows 7 order is downloading... hopefully it will ignore the fact it is thursday and everything will go smoothly!
Hi Lukeh,
You might want to check this out
We had all better keep our fingers and toes crossed for you.
Cheers :) I'm all prepared just in case. The Home Premium upgrade allows you to keep your files and everything apparently, but just to be on the safe side I'll do it nevertheless.
Well, best of luck dude ;)
If you can back up all of your stuff, it might be easier to start fresh and a clean install?
After reading that I think you're right!
I am catching up on comments
pssh I already knew this of course!
re-installs of the OS always seem to make a computer go faster, so I am wondering if that applies too?
This is an interesting article. I personally think this is mostly a bunch of bull, but let's see. What do we think of the Telegraph, by the way?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/jenson-button/6399857/Jenson-Buttons-Brawn-future-in-doubt-after-contract-talks-stall.html#
Just as well Joe shot down the Telegraph article, then:
All quiet on the driver front
Joe also has some discussion on the new teams:
Today's team in trouble is...
Guys,
What makes a Kindle so cool?
Scratch Lotus - make that USF1 with Campos.
This week's Autosport is available digitally due to the lazy gits at the Royal Mail.
Hoorah! :-D
Good and well, but that shouldn't be a one-off - if anything, they should do the same for future editions. Not because of a postal strike, but because information should be available much quicker now.
Ooh, hopefully they'll get a good response and might consider it permanently.
So you like my calendar then? http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/10/01/14-the-ideal-race-calendar/ :D
Why is nothing in F1 straight foward?
Indeed, backup all your files and then remove all trace of Vista forever!! :D If you still have the driver disk for your computer will be handy as in my experience it has missed a couple of drivers, good luck! :)
If anyone was here yesterday when I was talking about the great chocolate giveaway, I swapped mine for a polar bear.
It needs a name too.
Have made a suggestion for you :)
I like it :)
I a bit too busy working this week so only can manage a quick glance at the article. Is it obvious that the 2 teams yet to sign the RRA are newcomers ?
I now think it's USF1 and Campos, but it's obviously newcomers. :D Anyone who signed the previous Concorde must've signed the RRA by now.
I've also suggested one. ;)
hehe as have i :)
Well here we go.
*takes the dive into Windows 7*
Let's hope I come out the other side with it working!
Good Luck!
What Alex said :P
I'm starting to wish I hadn't numbered my blog posts.
How come?
Morning all.
Terrible Thursday got off to an early start thanks to Mrs C's 8am dental appointment, and is progressing through a dreary squall of yearbook-related malarkey.
A dying institution, thanks to the cost-cutting measures instituted by the current proprietors (famously described by a former editor as "a stinking mob"). One of the wheezes was to get rid of all the sub-editors, which means that most copy now reaches the page without even elementary checks – although some work is outsourced to digital sweat shops in Australia, apparently. You can read all about it in Private Eye.
You make this sound like the hopeless operating system equivalent of Shelley Winters' heroic final gesture in The Poseidon Adventure...
Well I'm tempted to delete the second post I wrote but because I've numbered them it would be obvious, mind you I hid number 9 because of what I said about the Piquets. :)
The Telegrasp are also masters of the traffic catching wheezes. They watch google trends and ever hour journos are sent to write articles about things which are popular. They always write an article explaining what the Google Doodle is about for example.
Hmmm. That plus Joe's blog entry pretty much confirms the validity of their article then - little to none.
Ugh. How cynical.
Have just looked at google trends and now wait, trembling with anticipation, for an article about "so you think you can dance season 6 top 20"
;)
w0000t!!
i actually (heart) royal mail today.
Hello again :) I survived! it works!
Although it still has the completely moronic User Account Control grrrrrrrrrrr. turns it off and throws a brick at it*
the content is in flash format, rather than pdf. so copy/paste still doesn't work. however, search... DOES!
that is pretty impressive. perhaps they took a leaf out of GPWeek's playbook?
the irony of this is, because of the royal mail strike, some people may just realize that mail for some may have just become an antiquated concept.
Why make Maitland's non-job easy for him?
that's an excellent point, and may explain why it doesn't work.
i would suggest that it isn't the numbering that's the problem. it's your desire to bury the archives.
embrace your mistakes. no-one can get it right all the time.
hehe. when you mentioned digital sweatshops in australia earlier, i assumed he'd found a new job :)
however, lack of c/p does makes it hard for us to quote an article for genuine discussion.
just as well then that your archives are up. which reminds me, i must get to listening to some of the old EPs in the offseason... :D
digital sweatshops are there to do mostly grammatical encoding/editing on very minimal pay (usually on a per page basis). there's quite a few of them here.
Woohoo... Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?
Yay! how you finding it so far? :)
Hehe you are right, however I'll never make the post numbered 9 public last thing I want is the Piquet's finding it, considering I blamed Crashgate on them.
I did a clean install, upgrade sounded a bit dodgy but it went perfectly fine with the clean install and everything seems to be working ok! I'm kinda impressed at how quickly everything works and loads after how slow things were with Vista most of the time... early days yet though ;)
Apart from that nasty dastardly user account control which has been turned off, locked away and thrown to the sharks!
Plus grouping all the icons in a hidden area of the taskbar is a big thumbs up from me. No more little program icons scattered across the bottom, woohoo
I really like the little touches... maybe I'm easily impressed...
What is this user account control thingy?
Its a dialog box that pops up pretty much everytime you do something. IE. 'Do you want to open this program?' 'Do you want to download this?' 'Do you want to install this program?' 'Are you aware we are driving you mad with this option?'... it greys the screen, stops you from doing anything else until you click yes or no. Surely, if you are going to install something, you want to install it!
The first time I used Vista it kept coming up constantly every few seconds and it drove me mental!!! Luckily you can turn it off (although it's quite hidden away in the control panel in Vista) very easily on this but I honestly don't see the point in it!
Blog Plug: I've done a post featuring a lot of F1 adverts, http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/15-formula-one-adverts/ I've probably had the most fun with this post.
Which leads me to ask, how can hide part of my post as right now on my main blog page are a lot of youtube videos and it would be nice to hide them?
"cancel" or "allow"
<!-- more -->
oops. too much white space in there. try this:
<!-- more -->
ahh. i give up.
google it ;)
;)
And would you know it, after almost three months of not receiving my issue on the day of publication, this week's issue has just popped through my letterbox!
Am liking this new digital Autosport, but it might be just my monitor, but some of the text is a little difficult to read? Could do with a zoom-inside-a-zoom feature.
if there's one thing Microsoft are good at, it's making sure they can't get sued for not providing a secure operating system :P
yeah. it looks like it's been scanned in? rather than exported from indesign (or whatever they use for page layout).
It's a start, I guess!
agreed. if it were purely digital, the text would be crisp, whereas it feels like i need to pop to specsavers.
however, that isn't a complaint. just an observation.
Hehe thanks Mr C I've got it to work, i managed to miss it :)
phew! looks good.
Maybe. Don't really mind though, certainly better than nothing.
I hope this will be a regular thing and if they put together an archive of previous issues I'd be a happy bunny.
Do you have a link to an article?
On how to hide posts, I mean...
I found this :) http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
Problems with your Observations? You should have gone to specsavers
Quite. At the beginning of 2000 I airily announced, "If Jenson Button gets the Williams drive, I'll eat my computer," and then flounced off to the Detroit motor show.
When I got back there was a post-it note attached to said device, upon which J Noble had written, "Feeling hungry?"
:D
To be fair, he was an outside shot for it!
They might say "Observe the hand because the face ain't listening any more..."
I was suprised that I managed to miss it for so long :)
I am wondering if I should be using 'more' tags on the frontpage - it's getting kinda hard to scroll through. What do you guys think?
your choice. we do.
Ultimatly it is up to you, but if they are long posts then I would. for example a post this length I think you should: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/brazil-qualifying-throwing-out-the-baby-with-the-bathwater/
That is genuinely ironic, unlike any of the circumstances cited by Alanis Morissette in the song with that title...
Well that was exactly the post I had in mind... I think I'll look into it!
Question - how many people here use the frontpage of a blog when they read it? Or do they just access the posts directly thru links or feeds?
I do!!!!
*waves*
Afternoon all
For Lou
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1320873
I'm an RSS luddite so I don't have any feeds. I'll visit a site to see what's what via the front page, or follow links.
Afternoon Jon.
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1320872
she's away till tomorrow night
Same, i have a bookmark folder on my bookmark bar called "Blog" which have all my following blogs in, or else they are in the "F1" folder, which confusingly has a link to BTCC's website in it
ah yes, but she'll no doubt try and catch up when she gets back.
she tried to catch up on 2 weeks of comments after valencia, so 3 days is nothing ;)
Both.
That would annoy me because I'd see which trophies hadn't been won.
So, the question is, am I hungry, and can I bothered to go outside?
Does using the 'more' tag shorten the post in a feed reader too, and will that annoy people?
but at least Jenson won at the races where they had decent trophies :)
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1320873
If Yes, then Yes,
If no, then no.
If Yes but no, then yes.
If no, but yes, then yes
Sorted?
Thanks Vicki Pollard!
Imagine having won only the santander trophys.
Very good point :D
It hasn't in google reader, at least not for my blog post.
Then I'm going to start using it...
I may need a flowchart :)
Yeah, none of those rubbish corporate logo trophies... :D
And Monaco, baby, YEAH! :D
like Rubens? ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/christine-jpg
Make sense?
Hehehehe!! Brilliant :)
Excellent :)
In these situations I usually have a glass of water. And see if that changes things. Often it makes me feel less hungry.
I use both. When I finish a linked article I often go the front page to see what else is ther.e
Did you edit your post afterwards. remember google reader does not go back to the site after it has seen it once.
Loeb's F1 dream is over http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79658
and
Di Grassi could be driving for Manor next year. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79672
No I think there's a different setting if you want your feed shortened.
I did, hmm
I just tested, (sorry if anyone has my blog on thier feed) and Google reader put everything in.
Any on that bombshell, i'm off. Am going home for the weekend, but am sure i will speak to some of you at some point!!
Adios Amigos!!
Argh, what the hell? iTunes is threatening to delete everything on my iPod...
Says its no longer authorized or something :/
blah blah blah ;)
Did you uninstall and reinstall iTunes?
You need to authorise your computer again.
Hehe it will always be there now :D
I can't.... it won't let me?
Did you not deatuhorise the computer before installing Win7?
How can you not have lunch? Lunch is great. I've decided to not go out to the bank so I can sit and have lunch.
I had to install it sure, clean install and all that. But it wont let me authorize it.
How many authorisations have you got left?
I can delete it
From that article earlier:
Not sure how that helps you tough
I don't even know you had to authorise/deauthorise iTunes...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
It never told me that.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
I'm on 4 and I've only ever used it on this laptop, every time I've reinstalled the OS I had to reauthorise (i forgot to deauthorise)
You can?, are you using google reader? becuase I can't. :(
Lukeh it looks like you should be able to deauthorize all accounts and then authorize again.
Nope I use a desktop reader (if that's what it is)
I could run to London and give you a giant man hug about now
Ah ok :) I don't like google reader now, mind you I should have given it some more thought before I posted it.
Sounds good... Make sure you Qik broadcast the journey ;)
I love Google Reader because it's so portable - I use three computers most days, so it's great that it remembers the feeds I have read!
Oh I get that, but to keep deleted posts seems a bit silly.
Me too, except the number of computers is 5 (including iPhone)
Why should you be able to delete what I have?
I agree that you should be able to delete it if you want to though.
Well OK it's four then - but since the 'upgrade' to OS3 and the netbook, I can't be bothered surfing on the Touch now :(
I did a test post and deleted it now it will stay in the feed on google reader.
Shame... I don't carry a laptop/netbook with me so it's a bit different.
Also the new update to the OS does seem to have improved it
Then hit it with the back of your shoe!
Hmm I find the screen too small and I like to do more than one thing at once.
And I STILL have that problem with connecting to a username/password Wifi server :(
Yes... Good... If I had gone to your site and saw your post I could have copied your post and kept it on my computer even if you didn't want me to. Which is why Google Reader does the same.
The other day a post got pulled from a website I read for legal reasons. But I wanted to be able to keep it, which is fine because Google Reader does that for me.
Ah Percussive Maintenance. It's the best way really.
I'm sure if I had a train journey as long as yours I would think differently. For me half of my commute time is walking. The rest involves two trains (and a change between them). So not having to have a bag is an enormous win.
I realise that and keeping actual posts is a good idea but considering this was a post about absolutly nothing and only have the word "blah" in it, it doesn't really need to stay.
Ok so maybe i'm not going right at this moment....the bus was just reversing out of its space as i got there and the man wouldn't let me on :(
If he knew why i was trying to get that bus he would, but he just waved me off. BOOO :(
I hate it when bus drivers do that...
Well that's your fault for not writing a more thoughtful test post, innit? :P
Argh im so annoyed, and i now have to wait another hour for the next one when i just want to go now grrr
Haha maybe but I didn't know Google reader did this until just now ;)
Bus Drivers are evil. Pure evil!
Maybe Pure evil is a bit harsh ;) but this one had a cool hat, so maybe i can forgive him a bit
Oh a cool hat :)
Ladies and gentlemen, I present... the Sidepodcar Mk. II as made in Forza Motorsport 3 :D
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodcar+Mk.+II
Look! I even made a video from the game of it being awesome. ;)
Don't let the hat fool you - he wants to make you miss his bus!
I know someone else who has a cool hat, it's called Mind the cap, and he makes a podcast and everything...oh wait ;)
I think i agree with this lots
yeyyyy
thats very cool!! well done!!
Ah thanks!
Wicked!
*coughs*
oops
Jon you broke the doohickey (again)
i knows :(
im sorry
however, on the positive side, i didnt break the LCLT like i usually do, and it seems to be sorted out. i have no idea how i am so rubbish sometimes
Jon, you're awesome ;)
I think I have fixed it.
If you can stomach reading about the FIA's legal problems, the latest paywall Rencken article is out.
thank you :) sorry about being totally inept with doohickey :(
That's okay. Blame the designer, I always do :)
I must be doing something every time, because it's only me that does it. But i honestly can't work out what, i do the same thing every single time. Its odd
i did figure out what you're doing the other day, so we can at least fix it at some point in the future. i think you're losing the second quote character when you paste a link.
however, the simple solution i just to paste links as text and they'll be auto-shortened.
for people wondering about Windows 7, not Lukeh now obviously :)
7 Good Reasons to Switch to Windows 7
7 Reasons to Avoid Windows 7
7 Things You Should Know About Upgrading to Windows 7
in this case it's true. although my failing was adding a "link" button that assumes implicit knowledge of valid html.
That's a lot of 7's for one post, phew
so i have blockquote and link, but dont have the /block quote?
Looking at that picture again, I really like those "badges" on the wall behind him.
thats the wierd thing, if im linking then i'll (nearly) always check the html is right, but clearly its the ones where i forget where it goes wrong
They'll be on his car next season i bet, Ferrari did it with theirs too
your links look something like this: <a href=">
instead of: <a href="">
note the one double quote in the first and the two in the second.
I didn't know that, but there is something about the BrawnGP ones that just looks really nice.
ah ok, that makes sense. i hardly ever use "" when im writing, so that would explain what happens
will still fix it at some point when we gets a chance.
You can have them as Twibbons too...
and i'll avoid the link button ;)
Im off (again!!) see ya soon!!
I likes this tweet:
DaveGorman I have post today. I won't open it though. A strike's a strike.
Thanks - can't wait until January when I get the new computer ;)
No worries, I imagine there will be more discussion on it when you get it :P
Apparently, Grand Prix Racing Online is that fantasy F1 league that keeps popping up in my Google Ads. :) Just remembered it now when I saw it again and took a closer look...
People of Blogosphere: what's currently the best, free, blogging platform? Still Wordpress.com I'm guessing?
I used to use blogger, now I use Wordpress - I must say I think it's a lot better.
Also you need Windows Live Writer - it's an awesome tool!
Yup.
Never heard of it. Is it a program where you can tippy-tappy a post and publish from it?
http://download.live.com/writer
Tis fabulous.
It is - it has loads of functionality, is really easy to use, and you can choose to write as it appears on the blog, html or preview the page...
http://www.formula1.com/video/
Brazil onboard is up - from Rubinho!
Shall definitely have a play with that then. Thanks
Yo. Hows the world?
Afternoon.
Still round, I think.
Viking Land is ticking over nicely, thank you ;)
Trying to come up with a catchy name for a motorsport related blog. Not specifically F1 based.
Can you believe that brumbrum.wordpress.com has already been taken? Gah!
Seriously? What about neeeeeeeooowwww.wordpress.com?
What would be the last application you think would get released for the iPhone... Well they released Photoshop the other week and that seemed mad, but this... Well... There is now a video editing application for the iPhone... No really...
I just made a video of fourstar and have uploaded it to the drop. It has titles, transitions... Bonkers!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/22-10-2009-13-31
It's called ReelDirector
I had enough problems with the word 'bullog' for the past 12 months, so might give your suggestion a miss on this occasion!
Goodness me! Cool video... not so much the transitions, but still.
I haz no audio, but gotta say, fourstar has very much the look of a long-suffering colleague at the beginning :)
I've blogged again (must be something wrong with me? I'm never like this) looking once more at the the scoring systems: http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/17-would-the-championship-still-be-going/
Well they have some sensible transitions... But that wouldn't really point out the bonkersness of it as much.
Well I had just said to him before we started... "Adrian, I'm about to record you so that I can make a video of you to upload to the internet okay." He said what about and I said, "too late it's started."
Yes long suffering!
you're blogging again? whooop!
Only if we come up with a super duper name, and I've exhausted every avenue!
(Just one really.)
What other motorsports were you thinking about?
Ooh the pinger is back!
Maybe. Less pigeon-holed and requiring less regular updating this time. Hopefully!
Anything really. Like to think I have a broad range of knowledge across most categories (except perhaps NASCAR and the like).
Hmm, Slipstream? Racing line?
I looked here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motorsport_terminology :)
wouldn't more sports = more work?
nonascasr.wordpress.com
or notnascar if thats easier to read
i read the first as non-ascar, so yeah :)
Maybe he's against ascar?
Dank why are you so against ascar? And what is it?
;)
Hopefully not no. I'm just going to use it for whatever ramblings of motorsport I have going on at the time.
ramblingsofmotorsport.wordpress.com
Don't fall for it! This is how we got stuck with mediafuturechange!! ;)
:)
Well Amy likes the name I gave her - *flounces* ;)
Rolls off the tongue better though ;)
what did you call her?
http://daydreamingoutloud.com/
her blog! Not her ;)
flounces did seem like an odd choice.
Right, I've updated my homepage on 'Making Up The Numbers' - small change, I've decided to start using short previews. Do you guys like it better?
Looks much more neater.
I wonder if you shouldn't show at least a couple of graphs? That is what the site is about and should be the first impression, maybe?
So for 2010 so far, we have Barrichello, Massa, and probably Senna.
Di Grassi now joins them too.
2010: Attack of the Brazilians?
Not with Piquet absent. :P
Yeah maybe I should - the problem is that for older posts they are buried down the post. In future, I will be writing the posts with the 'more' tag in mind....
Dank, any truth to the rumors that Red Bull will use Cosworth next year? Are they still on with Renault for next year? I assume Merc is a long shot by now.
Quick heads up, if your on last.fm and your profile is on the wiki. I've just added you ;)
Christine! Looks like Katherine has said she'll make you a monster if you design it and only use wool she already has!!!
http://kathall.co.uk/blog/2009/10/are-monsters-creative/#comment-2056
I reckon they may well go with Cosworth...
Are you still keeping your Red Bull contacts open?
Yeah I have been in contact with them recently. They did suggest that there might be a few things I can do for them which I'm still waiting to hear more about.
What was I thinking? I'm recreating the front cover to The Resistance for one of my cars on Forza 3, and im about halfway though it so far.... I've used 200 different objects allready...
It's coming along quite nicely... but SO many things to do to make it look nice...
Greetings all and apologies to Mr C for not phoning in a question for Joe
no worries. i don't think we had any actually, but that just makes my life easier :)
It's quiet here isn't it.
USF1 are interested in having Kyle Busch in their car for 2011. How exactly does a NASCAR driver get a superlicence?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79660
Unfortunately real life got in the way. I am really disappointed no-one phoned in though. That won't happen again.
he has plenty of time to test.
loeb could've tested too, instead he had a moan.
no worries. it's been quiet on the wiki front too. again, that's not a complaint, it make me life more simple.
World war 3 broke out between me and my computer. I sneaked on another computer when it wasn't looking.
Loeb did test and has an international A rally licence which is convertible. I have no idea what kind of licence a NASCAR driver has
Spiralling into my perfectionist designing world of Forza once more...
We have an opportunity to put questions to someone like Joe and the opportunity to show how much we value his contribution. We would be remiss not to make the effort required to phone in
:P
You will be in trouble if it finds out
Unless it has a gun, I'm not too worried.
Hey RG sorry I couldn't make your quiz last night, heard it was great fun though
Evening
Hi Adie
I had a horrible thought earlier.
SPC crew - what happens if Todt gets in tomorrow? Will SPC still live *pokey stick*
I just remember how annoyed you were with it all when Schuey was coming back....
Someone signed us up for another year of SPC.
The inevitable seems to have happend, breaking news on the BBC site
FORMULA 1:
Donington's hopes of staging British GP look to be over after failure of latest bid to raise funds
oops!
i was amy. i blame amy.
*it was.
yipppppppeeeeeeee
When were you amy?
Did you see in the FIA press release yesterday that it said British GP was on the calendar subject to circuit homologation .. that tends to suggest no Donington, no British GP to me
*shocked and indeed stunned*
Didn't saw this coming. I wonder when their next deadline will be.
Perhaps it's only on his weekends off ;)
Yay!
I will sound the airhorns of appreciation. *PARP*
Panic over!!!
Interesting...
Nernie has already said the race will be at Silverstone if Donington fails.
Bernie
I thought you liked elevation changes?
Nernie is better!
Does that mean there is no chance of a British GPin 2010?
when alex named me.
Honestly though, with 2 British world champions on the grid - will the REALLY be no British GP next year?
Germany had 2 races - the German and European GP's off of the back of The Cheating German's success. Spain has two because of Alonso....
That Britain will be left with 0 next year, when it's the hotbed of F1 (6 teams are based in the UK) is unthinkable...
I am sure Silverstone will have it!
#MFC - Have you seen that Nokia are suing Apple? Do we think this sort of this will increase as sales fall when an innovative product gets released?
By the way, having commented twice already, hello all :)
But if bernie tells everyone it is going there it likely isnt?
sounds to me like someone's clutching at straws. apple have a large enough patent portfolio to fight back i suspect. it's also no coincidence microsoft and nokia are best buddies at the moment.
Mark Hughes had some interesting little items in his column today that I was not aware. We knew Ari had asked for some French legal people to reciew the election procedure and Max shot him down saying that the French legal people were already involved. Well it turns out that there have been one or two changes to the procedure as a result of Ari's complaint.
Voters will no longer have to put their vote in an envelope with their name on it. They will have a free choice of blank envelopes. Why should they have their names on the envelope I wonder?
The Ugandan association head has claimed that a representative of Todt's who is apparently in line to be vice president of sport had approached him and offered to pay the Ugandan associations outstanding subscriptions assuming they voted for Todt.
Looks like if Todt gets elected there could be a legal challenge
I will repeat something I said two minutes after the Donington deal was announced in the first place. There will be a British GP in 2010 at Silverstone. No ifs. No buts. No maybes
Perhaps, I dont think bernie would say it would go there if that was what he intended though.
It makes no sense from a negociation point of view.
Still as slimy as ever. No surprise there then.
Oh, evening all. :P
When Bernie did the deal with Brands Hatch16 years ago or whatever it was he knew Brands would never get the planning permission they needed and he knew the race would be at Silverstone but by giving the contract to Brands he forced Silverstone to up its game and he got a nice cheque from the people at Brands to get out of their contract so effectively for several years of the contract he got paid twice for one race.
Anyone looking at the amount of work Donington was planning knew there was no way it could happen. No-one else has a contract for anything like 17 years. The only reason for that is that it makes the forfeit fee higher.
So Silverstone have to be ready to run the race if/when Donington fails or they will bever get the race again. Bernie gets a fat fee from Gillet. Bernie's mat Tom Wheatcroft who owns Donington gets his circuit back with a load of work done to it for free and everyone bar Gillet wins.
it wasn't all his money though? someone else has to lose too?
Guys, I don't want to appear to step out of line at all here - and it's not my intention to upset anyone (famous last words....)
But where is the harm in injecting some of your own thoughts etc into blog posts?
I try to if I can, or I feel it adds value to what I'm writing - and it's one way of making your blog different to others that are out there. A way of making it more personal and not just another 'news' site if you will?
Gillet and the people dumb enough to finance him lose.
that'll do :)
There is no harm whatever. Christine and Mr C have had arguments with people in the past saying that very thing when the people concerned thought that they should act as journalists and just state the facts without opinion
I am sure Bernie can now afford to pay Slavica's divorce settlement now ;)
And most importanty of course Lou wins and gets to go to Silverstone unless she sacrificed that for Spa
If no opinion is offered, nobody comments. My Rosberg in Japan post went on for ages - it was brilliant! Most of the time I don't get much, so I quite enjoyed it.
Bloggers, take sides!
i agree. but i also think it's very easy to write a post to deliberately wind people up (controversy also = many comments), and i don't think christine did that. which i approve of.
Is anyone else having trouble with the standard interface onto the drop ? I have to use the html version, instead.
I doubt it. Unfortunately for him because she was not an EU citizen it made tax sense for her to 'own' a lot of his shares so he lost big time. For some reason that always brings a smile to my face.
Apparently when Webber won this year he was the 12th driver in the 2009 lineup to win a Grand Prix at some point in his career...
all good for me. anyone else?
Someone just stole a chance for me to get rich from there as I was reading it
:D
Yeah it sounds like he lost out big time. Seems a shame to me...
RE: Gavin's comments it really gets to me when the tabloid press resort to these low tactics in their articles. It cheapens the publications in my eyes when they do so.
I was going to do a *Nelson-Piquet-Watch* earlier in the season on my site, as it was clear he was on his way out of Renault if he didn't buck his ideas up.
I didn't as you never know who reads your blogs, and as silly as it sounds I didn't want to upset him or anyone associated with team-piquet. Funny as it could have been - and I'm sure it would have generated traffic we didn't know what was going on internally at Renault (More than we thought now....) and it's still his job at the end of the day.
If someone I didn't know commented that they thought I was doing was bad I'd wait for them after school and have an old-fashoned discussion with them!
OT - I guess it's the business side of my brain taking over. There's a fairly high staff turnover in my field and the amount of people I've seen leave a company burning every bridge behind them thinking they'll be ok, only to meet up with their old boss / apply for a job with their old boss in a new organisation is staggering.
Wow - that went on a bit!
hehe!
According to this week's Autosport RBR have had 74 different versions of front wing arrangement and 52 of them have been so different that they are classified as different wings entirely.
Anyone can trot out randome facts
Seems OK
Subject to homologation ? The circuit has been fine for years ! Just take it back to Silverstone and stop bleating on about it, Bernie - Lets just settle it once and for all !
what??
:D
Thanks - but I thought mine was interesting? Seems like a lot of drivers that have won a race to me...
Gary Anderson was on great form and ranting away again. He was discussing cost cutting and asking how new teams were supposed to compete. He also suggested something I have said for years. There should be a maximimu number of people involved i a pit stop. He suggested 7. One per wheel, front and rear jack man and a lollipoman. Personally I would lose two of the wheel changers and let people decide whether to gamble on changing two tyres or do all four.
I would also like to see air jacks re-introduced and then you can not only cut a jackman but remove the risk of him being mown down.
Not as interesting as mine. :)
By a factor of 4 it seems :P
i haven't read all of it. am going to have to before the night is out.
It is getting back to the way it was in the 80s where half the people on the grid had won races. It has a bit to go to catch up to 1982 though where 11 different drivers won in one season.
Just wondered if Max has got handwriting examples from each delegate?....
The more I read of his stuff the more I want him to relace EJ on BBC next season. He is one of the few people with serious experience and a radical view of how the sport should change. Most of the others deal with the situation immediatel in front of them but he has a genuine overview of what the cars and the sport should be like and there are very few insiders who express that if they have it in the first place.
I also much preferred his version of the 2009 tech regs to the OWG fudge we got.
He probably has them licking the envelope to get DNA samples.
To go back on a comment I made earlier (sorry it's off topic)
Finally finished it... Here's the cover made up of 250 or so dfferent shapes and objects....
Took hours and hours but worth it :)
bad news, comp did killer blow and parent on other comp. good news, nice time for win7 to come out
That's amazing
Not sure if you guys have seen this already....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8300268.stm
That is incredible. Where do you get the patience from?
Nope, never seen that before ;)
Have you seen his cat?
I had another one of my silly ideas today regarding overtaking.
It'd send the purists of the sports absolutely mental, but I think that Button proved on Sunday that when the drivers want too overtaking IS possible in F1.
However, it was accentuated by the fact he was in a fast car out of position in relation to the drivers around him. Grosjean, Kobayashi, Nakajima etc...
Is there an arguement for getting rid of qualifying and starting grids in reverse order based on WDC position? There would be plenty of action on track as those in the quick cars fight their way to the front (Think Kimi @ Suzuka in 2005)
Failing that add financial incentives to finishing positions. It would tie in with the FIA's cost cutting plans. Limit the amount of money available to the drivers to say $1,000,000 in salary. But reward finishing positions by offering prize money.
Standardised across the grids, there are no guarenteed financial objectives to driving for the teams who can afford to pay you (Ralf Schumacher @ Toyota for example) but we'd reward those who went out and RACED. There's the incentive to do well and get into the Maccas / Ferraris and Brawns of this world.
Put the two together and I'm sure things would get spiced right up. What effect it'd have on the quality of the grid if you get more money elsewhere would be but still....
We just had a discussion on the subject o Donington missing yet another deadline
My cat?
As in, did you kick the cat when you ran out of patience :D
Nice work yet again Lukeh!
i like this quote:
"This leaves Donington with no F1, no MotoGP and a half-built track and no money "
hmm, that's not so good.
Oooooh i getcha. :)
Sorry I missed it...
The fact that the bond issue has actually been pulled means tons of costs and nil result so Mr Gillett has dug himself in a big hole...
I am glad I am not a creditor....
MotoGP must be pleased they are off to Silverstone....
Exactly what I feared would happen. Oh bumsocks :(
Silverstone could end up really winning here by getting the premier series of cars and bikes on their track...
Purrrlease...
Cat's should not be kicked....
:P
Well, not Snowcats anyway ;)
The reason there was overtaking on Sunday was that we had wet qualifying so all the cars with a wet set up were at the front of the grid and a dry race so all the cars at the back of the grid were massively faster than those at the front.
Do you really think drivers cruise around in low positions because they can't be bothered to overtake or because they are not getting paid to? They do it because overtaking is not possible. It is a technical and circuit problem
F1 has to reward excellence. It is a sport not a circus. You cannot have reverse grids unless you are prepared to have all the other circus staff like points for leading the most laps or for the fast pit stop or the shiniest car
253 objects!
How long did it take Lukeh?
Which is pretty much all he has done at the track too. At least there the hole has a tunnel in it
I did say it was one of my more crazy ideas Steven :)
Personally I would be one of the purists up in arms if such a thing was implemented! I was bored this afternoon and my mind tends to wander in such situations....
And knocked down the iconic Dunlop Bridge :(
A few hours...
It's basically all hexagons, circles, squares and odd shapes here and there. Plus I basically had the album taped onto my TV so I could stay true to it and because of my horribly perfectionist way of doing that kind of stuff. Considering once again it's all done with a controller it's nice and rewarding when it's finished. Plus the other car I finished today, obviously the Sidepodcar, is absolutely dominating and watching replays of the Sidepodcar is always fun :D
we need videos!
where's the link to the sidepodcar, again?
He posted some last night... hopefully he will link again (hint.. hint!)
What they need to do is simple. Slash downforce and don't have as many corners per mile. Don't have stret tracks and get rid of chicanes if necessary by replacing them with proper corners. And magically the racing will return. The cars are way to fast for the circuits just now
Imagine if Wheatcroft had tried that. He would have been slaughtered but it was necessary for the GP so when Wheatcroft eventually returns Donington to racing again he will get the hero treatment despite doing a deal with Gillett in the first place
If it's that simple, why didn't the OWG think of it?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodcar+Mk.+II
I'll do my best with replays, it uploads 30 seconds maximum so it might be a bit of slice and dice of footage... or shake and bake perhaps :P
cheers. missed them completely.
taking the rear wings away (or reducing the size) annoys sponsors.
But they have small rear wings at the Indy 500?
HOW. THE. HELL! YOU HAVE FORZA 3 ALREADY?!?!?!
It seems everyone with the answers hasn't been listened too. People have been banging on for ages that the racing would return if:
A. Downforce was reduced
B. Mechanical grip was increased
C. Braking distances are increased.
They got 2 out of 3 right this season (to some effect) but the braking is still an issue....
The circuits I also agree with. The endless construction of the soul-less Tilke-dromes is getting to me, but that also goes hand in hand with the expansion to markets that really don't care about the racing, or can't afford to watch. The empty grandstands in China, Malaysia, and Turkey this year was nothing short of criminal when you know that Imola, Canada and to a lesser extend Indianapolis would be sold out and packed months before the races what very dis-heartening.
I mean, look at Suzuka FFS - their grandstands where 75% full on the Thursday when there was no racing!
It came yesterday before the royal mail strikes... most places sent off all the releases this week because of they strike stupidity. did you preorder it online or in a shop?
forza 3 with sidepodcar no less...
*runs*
Because they are more interested in their own team winning and have a whole load of other stuff to consider. Imagine Paddy Lowe going back to Ron Dennis and saying oh BTW Ron we are banning rear wings. He would get fired because the rear wing is a prime sponsor site. They have too many outside pressures on them.
It is easy to see what needs to be done because once upon a time we had lots of overtaking and then it stopped. What changed? The circuits developed a plague of chicanes and a lot more corners and Chapman and co discovered advanced aerodynamics. So all we have to do is go back and look at the point where overtaking stopped and learn the lessons from it.
We need cars with low downforce and high drag so that they are faster through a corner while following another car than they are on their own and we need long straights with tight corners at the end so that there are long braking distances and multiple lines through the corners.
HMV store, picking it up as soon at it opens tomorrow at 9am.
This makes me hate RM even more than I did before! Grrrr.
Still, tell me - is there anything half decent on the Storefront?
I noticed one thing - all replay clips you upload seem to have the FM logo in the corner. Wish you could take it off. Sucks a bit.
There's plenty of good stuff, and this is before the game will be widely released in the shops so after friday and by next week once it's released worldwide it should be packed.
I already have a lot of race car liveries planned. Including a certain white, black and flourescent yellow scheme on a certain Merc DTM car ;)
Downforce was reduced by a tiny amount maybe 15% in the end but we still have vastly sensitive aero. Look at some of the recent front wing end plates for example. When I say slashed I mean slashed by 80-90 after the clever guys have recovered what they can.
What are you painting a Jordan Merc for? ;)
T10 issued copies to MVP players in the FM community as well as reviewers so they could begin filling up the Storefront, so by the time the game mass released there was a nice selection of things to choose from.
*facepalm* Oh Gavin...
I've been getting a fair bit of ingame money for my F1 logo already, and a couple of people have downloaded the Sidepodcast logo too!
A return back to single element wings and the removal of the areas the 'flippy-up' stuff can be incoporated into would help too.
You made that F1 logo? It's freakin' sweet! Honestly, you should be able to make a fair bit of cash just selling decals and paintjobs on the SF, not just by racing.
I know you meant Brawn, silly!
Blimey - I see a niche in the market here for savvy marketing types and major international companies (Red Bull for example)
Sadly I thing the demand for the F1TailPipe logo would be somewhat limited!
Mm, indeed. :P
Just finished listening to the Word podcast. Danny Baker is a genius. On that note, off to do the washing up then to bed. 'Night all
agreed. go lukeh!
see ya janna.
That Video Editor option will have me making all kinds of videos for YouTube. So many ideas, and now the ability to put them into practice.
night!
That is one of th things I have said for years. Single element short chord wings with a standard profil all along the wing. So no spoons in the middle or dips and swoops or anhedral or dihedral. Nice simple straightforward sponsor friendly wings with small single piece endplates or better still no endplates
A vibrant modding community makes games like this.
Who here played Geoff Crammond's GP2? I loved that game, and the fact it was so easy to mod kept the whole thing fresh for much longer than the actual life of the game IMHO.
I loved being able to race with my own helmet design in any season from the 70's to the present day (2003 I think was the last time) for example
To be honest... the video editing is a bit shocking...
You just choose how long you want, the quality, then it uploads...
Speaking of Podcasts, on this Week's Gareth Jones on Speed, he managed to get Jenson Button to say "Hi, this is Jense, you're listening to GJOS" - so maybe Gareth was a Bluewater too?
Trust me, the Forza community is massive. And with FM3 it's set to get even bigger.
Yeah but at least you can then download it to edit together yourself. That's what I'm more interested in.
Yeah true enough.
I just wish that FM logo could be removed though. I can understand why it's there I suppose but it gets in the way.
*Things I learned today. Bluewater is in Kent not Essex.
Turns out I was thinking of the Lakeside shopping centre.
Just as well I didn't make the effort to go and see JB on Tuesday....
:D
Good night peeps ;)
The more i think about it the more i think qualifying should be abolished. Perhaps it worked in the olden days, but the idea of lining up cars fastest to slowest then expecting them to overtake each other is a little mad. Its no wonder the OWG couldnt find a solution!
Night gavin!
See ya Gavin.
It would have been a pretty lonely wait!
Night Gavin
Talking of Lakeside, has anyone here been karting at the track opposite?
I nearly killed myself there last year (ok, ok a bit overly dramatic) but I did book a one way ticket to the tyre barrier after the flat out chicane on the back straight - (the downhill one) in the wet. Got a bit squiffy as I was chasing someone down and before I even knew what was happening I was spinning off the track across the mud into the tyres. Honestly, it terrified me at the time as I didn't slow down until I hit the wall. And it hurt!
It worked before so there is no reason why it can't be made to work again
I agree, but only as I am at work usually on a saturday. ;)
*Sneaks in*
I don't think my computer is looking...
How do you suggest the grids are decided though? Brings me back to the reverse grids in championship order loony suggestion again....
I won't tell it! *zips mouth*
Draw numbers 1-26?
Give Rubens Pole. then let the rest decide in a game of bingo.
Argh, my fingers and brain hurt.
Doing a blog post around silly season and who could move there.
I wanted to do one on the FIA elections too but I'm running out of time...
:)
You could roll back 40 years of car develoment and race the classic cars...
In my mind its cleer the cars should be lined up in a different order at each race, wheter that be done by formula, reversed grids or reverse championship order.
It takes nothing away from the sport, in fact its pretty similar to the idea of seeding teams in cup draws or wimbledon
I like the way the grids are decided. The problem is the cars and the tracks
"Le Mans" Starts for everyone.
Probably best if I stay away from the OWG, or I'll have everyone running round a pole 10 times and playing 'Hole in the Wall' and doing a lap of the track on uni-cyles before making their way to the grid.
how do you explain the coincidence between the mixed up grid and all the overtaking at the weekend?
Plus if there is no qualifying we could have 2 dayrace weekends instead of 3, then we could have more races...
I say keep qualifying and have rolling starts.
*hides*
Off Topic, but I've just seen the Campos META (don't forget the capitals) website. I used to have that title image as a wallpaper on my PC in 2006!
It was a camera attached to the airbox of Rubens' car at the Hungary grand prix and fired by remote. I think Darren Heath took it IIRC.
How have Campos META (don't forget the caps) got away with that one??!
There is an interesting story on 5live at the moment about a woman taking the premier league to court over their monopoly on tv coverage. The originally tried to prosecute her for using a foreign satellite to broadcast football
Its gone though all the courts and will now be heard at the european level.
This could end sports selling exclusive rights. could be very interesting for the future of F1 broadcasting
It is takes the whole essence of the sport away from rewarding excellence to dumb luck. Why do you think you are going to get overtaking if you do that anyway? How many times have we watched a fast car stuck behind a slow car unable to pass him?
Some cars were on wet set up and some on dry set up. The wet cars were fast in the wet in quali and slow in the dry in the race because they had so much drag from their higher downforce etc
No
It is more likely to end restrictive pay per view deals which is good for everyone apart from the TV stations who used to say that nothing that was currently available free to air would be put on pay per view.
ALISON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
15 minutes late but there is 90 minutes of Michel on now
I would love to see the end of PPV sports. I hope the knock on of this isn't increased subscription prices to sports channels etc though....
It is more likely to mean that because there is one European market intheory at least that you have the right to buy a Bulgarian system and get the same thing for less
But for we race goers I love going to the track for three days...
Don't wish that away...
Aye, the British Grand Prix is the highlight of my year. As I get older the time I get to spend with my friends becomes less and less, I value the weekend away with the boys as much as the race...
Don't take that away from me!
Im afraid i have to.
2 day race weekends would greatly reduce the costs of running the event and make it more accessible to people like me that have never had the opperunity to go.
If its any consolation most countries could have 2races so you could have 2 weekends to attend instead of 3.
Lots of Jenson pictures on the drop from tuesday night, now :-)
Sorry Nick but that is rubbish...
I promise you that the overseas ones are much more fun and the moveable circus that is F1 costs loads of dosh every time it moves.... it would send costs up not down for the teams and the spectators who would travel miles for two days fun rather than three...
No good for the real F1 fans who never miss Friday if they can help it....
Most countries can't afford to lose money more than once a season....
I'd probably end up doing less days as the flying and hotel costs would be too high proportionately.... and for what??... less time on track and a more frenetic lifestyle all round...
Actually it should all go the other way... an extra testing day on the Thursday or Monday.... partly for test drivers of course....
Thursdays : Whole day of testing, but only for test drivers
Fridays: Two two hour? practice sessions with race drivers
Saturday: Practice session followed by qualifying
Sunday: The race
Something like that? More car on track time.
Except at Monaco I imagine ;)
Well, Wednesday? Well, that would be annoying for the locals.
Okay, first flaw in the plan.
Not really, it isn't really practical to test around Monaco anyway :)
Well, I'm think more for the reserve drivers to get some track time as well.
Or they could do it at say 9 pre-selected races, so avoiding any possible logistal problems
Well you can do that at every other track, have Monaco as it is now.
I guess since i have never been to a race, let alone a friday sesion, so i am not a real f1 fan.
Fair enough, think i will head off on that note, night all.
Night Nick
night sir.
x1 joe podcast wrapped. i (heart) joe. much fun.
daniel. would you be interested in penning a guest post, detailing your visit to see jenson?
Well done
No Nick...
It just means that as an F1 fan you are missing out...
Assuming you ever get the chance to go I promise that you'll want to be there for three days....
Night...
yay!!
thats a lot of Jenson.
:D
Great stuff - I love listening to those.
Excellent... When do we get to hear your chat?...
Oh and does Christine know of your new crush???...
5am(ish).
just one of many.
same, i have the asides in their own group on itunes thanks to show selector. its even the only sidepodcast i get through there now.
It's not new!
And I guess it makes a change from Angelina Jolie....
Or is he more of a Keira Knightly type?...
(That is an F1 question you will recognise)....
PMSL :-) How about using a foreign translation of motorsport or similar?
Well I finally got my silly season article posted. Not as fun as talking to Joe though!
Sure, am away this weekend 'tup norf int dales', but can try and do it next week if so ? Might be worth asking Lou, as she was there too :-)
I did a couple of endurance kart races with a Brzilian guy in the team. We decided we wanted a Portugese name just to be different so we ended up with velocidad which is Portugese for speed
cheers sir.
Do you want me to ask lou if she'd be interested? Talking to her now
please, that would be fab!
Sounds good to me ! :-) Also the same in Spanish, I think.
can you also ask or tell her my pictures are up on the drop, if she wants to take a butchers.
Evening all
That's actually a very good point Mr C.
Every other weekend would fit and make it much easier for the casual to watch.
However, I can see the arguement for a mid season break for the teams. I think racing until almose November time is too long though.
Lou says she didn't really get as much time to see it all as she didn't get there till 3-ish so she hasn't got much to write about it, which makes sense as she was still in school till then... Her brief summary was 'I saw that Jenson was there, he got in a car and we sang queen' so she's unsure if that sentence is worth a whole article :P
that's barely a tweet!
Poor Lou! Didn't Jenson know she was coming?
Evening
She did but she was in school in the morning :(
I didn't get there til about two, too. Good day though, great to be so close to an active F1 driver.
Right guys, I'm off to bed. Working in London tomorrow so an early start for me.
Take it easy y'all.
See ya later sir
bye bye.
If Lou (or anyone else) would like the original resolution pictures, i'll happily email them if so. Mr C knows my email :-)
if you hit the download button on drop.io, they should be full-res?
Ah okay, didn't know that ! :-)
You'd think so but I manage to avoid it ;-)
Good to see you aren't turning your back on blogging. I think most motorsport blogs specialise on one (perhaps two) series, so I'm looking forward to what you come up with.
I've been mega busy emptying/cleaning the old flat and sorting out stuff in the new one (yesterday was my 'break' where I just did odd bits here and did the quiz). In the odd times I've been here this week I've noticed how quiet it is.
#mfc Twitter has signed deals to put messages into the Microsoft and Google search indexes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8310716.stm
and
Facebook will do the same soon http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Bing_Is_in_Your_Facebook__Indexing_Your_Status
Do this but with the test on Monday. If they test before the race, the race will suck.
I think couriers should have gps so i can track them. I keep getting excited when people walk in the door and none of them are couriers
Atleast you have the possibility of some post...
OUR post people are all on strike. I'm still waiting for a birthday card that i was send on Wednesday last week!!
They have these in London
This isn't very MFC - Amazon cripples international Kindle:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/352684/amazon-hobbles-uk-kindle
You didn't answer your ping earlier Alison so you missed 90 minutes of Michel
I'm just in from work this very second. I don't think the ping carries that far.... Come join us in today :)
Apparently, some were there at 9am, and Jenson about 10.
Terrible Thursday got off to an early start thanks to Mrs C’s 8am dental appointment, and is progressing through a dreary squall of yearbook-related malarkey. {Comment #319}
Which yearbook are you doing? I can't remember if you've told us yet or not.
This week’s Autosport is available digitally due to the lazy gits at the Royal Mail. {Comment #304}
I now feel pretty silly because it's the first time since the post-Spa issue that I've bought a paper version of Autosport from the newsagents (I also got a copy of Racing Engineering - my first one - while I was there).
Quite. At the beginning of 2000 I airily announced, “If Jenson Button gets the Williams drive, I’ll eat my computer,” and then flounced off to the Detroit motor show.
When I got back there was a post-it note attached to said device, upon which J Noble had written, “Feeling hungry?” {Comment #361}
How different would 2009 have been if Bruno Juncquiera had been given the nod?
While we're sharing blog mistakes, I typed that McLaren were almost certain to win the first court case in the McLaren/Ferrari mess... ...three hours before they comprehensively lost. Oops!
Question – how many people here use the frontpage of a blog when they read it? Or do they just access the posts directly thru links or feeds? {Comment #370}
If it's a blog I access frequently, then I almost invariably use the home page.
If I access the blog rarely, I almost invariably don't, because I will wait for someone to link the page (an elementary form of peer review).
I’m an RSS luddite so I don’t have any feeds. {Comment #373}
Hurrah! I'd almost despaired of finding anyone else who doesn't use an RSS feed reader.
I can only assume Force India doesn't either, else they'd know that their podcast's RSS feed broke between Spa and Monza. This means they have four podcasts that haven't appeared in the RSS feed...
I don't use them either
My day is officially better
Subject to homologation ? The circuit has been fine for years ! {Comment #602}
The circuit also had substantial changes made to it to bring it to the latest version of the Category 1 standard, which means re-homologation was necessary.
