Here we are at Thursday, and it's time to start thinking about the weekend. It's the last free weekend before the end of the season, when there will be weeks without racing, and we'll finally be able to get stuff done. Here's some of the news from today:

  • John Howett of Toyota has said that Kobayashi has certainly done enough to become a contender for a race seat in 2010, although he stops short of confirming anything. Presumably, with them saying Raikkonen is too expensive (with the size of their budget?), Kobayashi is a little bit more within their price range.
  • The FIA have approved the Monaco date change, meaning it will be moved forward a week. That will appease the teams who were worried about it's proximity to Turkey. There will now be a two week break instead of the back to back that was initially proposed. I wonder how many other changes we'll see to this "official" calendar.
  • Finally, Webber has been thinking about the future and believes the big improvements he's shown this year, including finally getting his hands on a race winning trophy, will propel him to fight for the championship properly next year. He is happy to admit that this year he lacked consistency and that's what he needs for 2010.

That'll do it for now. Let us know how you are coping with Terrible Thursday, and particularly let us know if you have any chocolate. I'll see you in the comments.

I think the university hates me....

I only have ethernet cable internet, and so bought a wireless router to plug it into, then i'd password it so only i could use it, but they've used some sort of magic trickery to block all their internets coming out wireless routers, boooo

  • me21/10/2009 at 23:41

but they've used some sort of magic trickery to block all their internets coming out wireless routers, boooo

    is that possible?

ours comes free so i dont know why they do it

  • Nick21/10/2009 at 23:43

    is that possible?

they decided they needed mac codes and all sorts of details I had never heard of after we were caught

  • Nick21/10/2009 at 23:43

that is ridiculous, how much info did they take before you got it?

  • Jon Waldock21/10/2009 at 23:44

    is that possible?

    apparently so;

it all set up properly, and my computer recognised it as wireless and the network i set it as, but when i tried to use a web browser it comes up with "an external internet-y-doohickey has been recognised, this may be in the form of modem or a wireless router, these are prohibited"

    boooo

totally. so now im going to have to buy a ethernet extender cable, but its still got a wire!! means i cant sit in kitchen with my laptop and be talk to people whilst im doing stuff, its sooooo annoying.

this university does lots of little things like that to stop you being social (probably not the actual reason, but it feels like it), its soooo frustrating

  • Jon Waldock21/10/2009 at 23:46

    have you asked about it?

i might do, its very annoying.

  • Alison21/10/2009 at 23:53

For the record, you could have had my icecream if you'd fixed my boiler.

The boiler man (sans orange drill) has "fixed" it so it's permanently on. My gas bill is going to make me cry.

    exactly!!

plus all the flats in the hall are locked off so you have to have a key to get in each, so you cant just walk into someones kitchen and say hi. It's like a prison, in fact its worse

This aspect is normal. You have to protect your foodstuffs!! It's bad not to have a common room or bar or something though.

I was catered in my first year. We basically met people by sitting down next to each other at dinner and being forced to speak.

Is there at least another hall bar/union/pub within a 2-3 min walk?

  • Jon Waldock21/10/2009 at 23:57

This aspect is normal. You have to protect your foodstuffs!! It's bad not to have a common room or bar or something though.

each cupboard has a lock on it, and in most halls the kitchen does too, i just want to be able to walk around and say hi to people i dont know, it makes it really hard to how it is here.

I was catered in my first year. We basically met people by sitting down next to each other at dinner and being forced to speak.

    there's no catered here :(

  • Jon Waldock21/10/2009 at 23:58

union is about a 5 minute walk and is only really open at night.

im more of a pub man to be honest

  • Nick21/10/2009 at 23:58

I was catered in my first year. We basically met people by sitting down next to each other at dinner and being forced to speak.

I concur. But it was more at the hall bar, and a guy coming into my room on the first afternoon and being amazed that i wasnt interested in his smoking materials and that i didnt think Marx was a legend.

He is now one of my best friends :D

That's because every computer has a unique address wired into the network hardware.

  • Andy Taylor22/10/2009 at 00:10

OK Jon, try plugging your computer into the belkin router making sure that the router is not plugged into the Internet link. You should be able to gain access to the router admin pages via a web browser.

SOmewhere on those pages will be an option to use the PC's MAC address for the Router (if you give me the exact model I'll look up the manual).

Choose this setting, save it, restart the router and plug it in to the Internet link.

That will make the router pretend it's the PC. Of course there may be other measures in place to stop this working and you may risk losing your access if you are found out.

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 00:11

Noooo. You're like my personal Michel reminding head ping.

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 00:55

So Button has 7 carrer wins... is that the least of anyone when they became world chamipon?

Doubt it. Did Keke Rosberg ever get that many? He only won one in his championship season as did Mike Hawthorn. I don't think Hawthorn won many races either althout there were not as many then. Phil Hill would not have won many either.

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 00:56

Just a question. Is LewHam still the WC until after Abu Dhabi results are confirmed?

cheers steven, just having a lok...

    keke has 5 career wins...

    Hawthorn only had 3

Phill hill only had 3 as well...

Quite suprising... I wonder which driver won the most championship races over his carrer without winning the world championship?

That is a difficult one. Moss won 16 which may stil be the record. It was therecord by a long way in his day

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:15

I was about to say Moss. I couldn't quite believe I might know something other people wanted to know though. I don't think DC was far behind....

11... yes there are a lot more races now, but still not enough!

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:24

How many race wins does Massa have? It's funny how many of the people with a lot of wins and no WC are modern. Is that just because we have more races?

That is part of it. The other part is that there are a lot of dead people on the list of winners

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:25

That is part of it. The other part is that there are a lot of dead people on the list of winners

I see. They would have gone on to win some more but poor safety meant they died in action. Is that what you're saying?

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:25

11... yes there are a lot more races now, but still not enough!

I see. They would have gone on to win some more but poor safety meant they died in action. Is that what you're saying?

Someone like Gilles Villeneuve was regarded by the other drivers as certainly the fastest driver around and maybe the best. He won 6 races but he only did 4 full seasons before he died. He would have won a lot more races.

Jochen Rindt was not very old when he became the only posthumous champion in 1970. Ronnie Peterson who was catching Moss's total when he was killed in 1978 etc etc etc

  • Paul22/10/2009 at 01:28

11... yes there are a lot more races now, but still not enough!

Unless you have a years like 2002 or 2004. There were way to many races those years.

me neither. 15 is the perfect amount.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:32

    You should start watching Nascar

I dont see why we shouldnt have more, a greater variety of tracks, the best allrounder would win.

I love watching the races, i dont see why people dont want more.

i am not saing we have one a week, but once every other week for most of the year would make sense to me

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:34

I dont see why we shouldnt have more, a greater variety of tracks, the best allrounder would win.

We don't have anything like enough good tracks as it is without adding more race which will just lead to more bad tracks appearing on the calendar.

  • me22/10/2009 at 01:34

I love watching the races, i dont see why people dont want more.

i would respectfully suggest you first get a full-time job, and then see how the f1 season works out for you.

    ;)

15 would leave me desperate for more. Is that the idea?

true, but we are loosing good tracks because they cant afford to stay on the callendar, if the callendar was bigger we could keep them!

  • Paul22/10/2009 at 01:36

We don't have anything like enough good tracks as it is without adding more race which will just lead to more bad tracks appearing on the calendar.

That's a problem with the management. The racing (or attendance for that matter) is of very little interest to them

  • me22/10/2009 at 01:38

true, but we are loosing good tracks because they cant afford to stay on the callendar, if the callendar was bigger we could keep them!

not true. we are loosing good tracks because the fees are too high and the business case doesn't add up.

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:39

true, but we are loosing good tracks because they cant afford to stay on the callendar, if the callendar was bigger we could keep them!

It wouldn't make any difference. The cost of being on the calendar is due to inventive pricing and is nothing to do with cost.

  • Paul22/10/2009 at 01:39

Since we have a spare race this year, with the championship over, I think they should make it non-championship and mix things up a bit. Throw in test drivers or something

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:40

Since we have a spare race this year, with the championship over, I think they should make it non-championship and mix things up a bit. Throw in test drivers or something

  • Paul22/10/2009 at 01:42

Why? Because we don't have enough incompetent fools behind the wheel as it is?

    They make it entertaining.

But it could let some of these GP2 and other drivers have a go - see what they are made of.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:42

not true. we are loosing good tracks because the fees are too high and the business case doesn't add up.

true, but the more events the lower the fees have to be to meet the targets... (although you might argue greed would ensure that doesnt happen) I still see more races meaning lower ticket prices, as well as more great circuits.

wouldnt it to be great to have both donnington and silverstone on the calendar?

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:43

We have had a WC two years in a row now. Surely that means we deserve the European GP.

    I disagree massively.

You cant change the championship rules half way though the season, and besides how wouold you feel if you paid to go to the opening round of the season in melbourne and then 10 days before the race they decide it isnt quite what they feel like doing so it will be started at the next round?

Its hardley suprising we get empty stands at the newer venues when even the fans think the people who consider going should be treated with such contempt.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:46

We have had a WC two years in a row now. Surely that means we deserve the European GP.

we dont even need to call it that, abu dhabi has set a modern precedent, call it the robin hood GP!

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:46

Maybe now the title is settled, I won't hold my breath everytime Jenson tries an overtaking move.

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:47

true, but the more events the lower the fees have to be to meet the targets... (although you might argue greed would ensure that doesnt happen) I still see more races meaning lower ticket prices, as well as more great circuits.

It hasn't worled like that so far. We used to have 15/16 races a season and now we have 18/19 and the ticket prices have gone up. The cost to everyone involved has gone up. You are applying real world economic principals to to Bernieworld.

  • Paul22/10/2009 at 01:48

It was a bit tongue-in-cheek. This last race will be a bit on a let down though.

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 01:48

What about your other two? ;)

Well obviously Sebastian knows what he's doing in that respect.... I'm not sure who else is involved. Fernando? He's finished about 2 races this season, I'm long beyond being nervous!

  • me22/10/2009 at 01:49

also not accounting for the human cost. more races manes two races teams or dead mechanics.

doesn't spell cheap to me. maybe we need a robot pit crew?

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:50

I think Seb will want to win it to stick it to the man. I think Jenson feels he still has something to prove. Rubens wants to get his favourite position back..... What's not to like?

Rubens wants to get his favourite position back.....

Thats true, but i think bernie will have only another season or 2 left in him, then its only a matter of time untill cvc sell, i think things will change.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:56

It was a bit tongue-in-cheek. This last race will be a bit on a let down though.

    No worries ;)

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:58

not necicarily, maybe more staff in the factory, the race team could be completly independent

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 01:59

Thats true, but i think bernie will have only another season or 2 left in him, then its only a matter of time untill cvc sell, i think things will change.

So you think if someone who pays what CVC will want for the rights to F1will not have to charge a load of money to recover the cost of the purchase?

  • me22/10/2009 at 01:59

Thats true, but i think bernie will have only another season or 2 left in him, then its only a matter of time untill cvc sell, i think things will change.

following your line of thinking... the teams take back control.

you think they'd double their workload and staff? i think they'd half it and make the races more exclusive.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 01:59

What do you actually do with yourself Nick?

    Mysterious things ;)

But i get to take a break from it in less than a week! whoo!

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 02:00

Ron Dennis was talking about having two race teams for 19 races because of the amount of time people had to spend away from home.

you think they'd double their workload and staff? i think they'd half it and make the races more exclusive.

maybe, i dont think they will take back control.

more races means more sponsor exposure though, and more tv revenue, as well as more circuit revenue (alternatly they could also keep circuit revenue the same and lower prices massivly and atract more fans who wil buy more merchandise...)

As i see it they would make more money

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:02

    live comment.

    FACT

I dont think i could get him to agree more races would be better with the best argument in the world after his post today....

I was thinking more of if the teams should buy the ights back from CVC or is there someone he sees who should/would buy them

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:09

I was thinking more of if the teams should buy the ights back from CVC or is there someone he sees who should/would buy them

He kind of answered that before with his idea of a trust. I cant see the teams agreeing to any system which would pay for that...

I think it will probably be sold to investors, but more long term ones.

Ideally i think NASCAR should buy it

  • me22/10/2009 at 02:16

Ideally i think NASCAR should buy it

even though you don't watch nascar?

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 02:18

even though you don't watch nascar?

They are great at marketing and they know how to keep their fans happy.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:19

even though you don't watch nascar?

nope, but they know how to run a business and most importantly they know how to look after the fans.

They are a long way from the perfect scenario, but they are the best buyers i can think of at the moment to take the sport into the future..

Anyone else that buys it wil be at the mercy of the banks, or just using it as an overactive cash cow like CVC

  • me22/10/2009 at 02:19

nope, but they know how to run a business and most importantly they know how to look after the fans.

but they're not good enough to temp you to watch.

    yet bernie is.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:22

but they're not good enough to temp you to watch.

I am not suggesting they make f1 into NASCAR, just that they use their knowlege of running a motosport to run F1.

I do watch nascar from time to time, if i had a dish i would probably watch it more. Its a bit difficult to get into it when oval racing is such an alien concept to me and I am so far from the news or the hype.

  • me22/10/2009 at 02:23

I am not suggesting they make f1 into NASCAR, just that they use their knowlege of running a motosport to run F1.

maybe. they don't have a lot of international experience and it's easier to tailor something to a local crowd

  • Alison22/10/2009 at 02:25

Blimey I really do watch too much masterchef. I spent a good couple of minutes wondering what plates of food had to do with anything.... I was beginning to get concerned you were malnourished and in need of ice cream.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:26

maybe. they don't have a lot of international experience and it's easier to tailor something to a local crowd

Thats true, but it would also take away the risk that nascar tries to start an international series which would be better run than F! and eventually kill it off like it dod to indy cars.

I think they would recognise what F1 is and why people watch it, rather than just see it as a means to make money regardless of the implications.

CVC have damaged the sport, it could probably have been worse, but F1 needs to avoid that again and have owners who want to own a motorspot, not an investment

  • me22/10/2009 at 02:28

Thats true, but it would also take away the risk that nascar tries to start an international series which would be better run than F! and eventually kill it off like it dod to indy cars.

    fair point.

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 02:28

but they're not good enough to temp you to watch.

IF NASCAR got control of F1 they would not change the fundamentals of the sport and would not make it into a NASCAR clone.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 02:28

Blimey I really do watch too much masterchef. I spent a good couple of minutes wondering what plates of food had to do with anything.... I was beginning to get concerned you were malnourished and in need of ice cream.

    Hahahahaha!!! You better be kidding.

I'm leaving my flat on 2nd November, dumping boxes in storage, my car in a friend's garage. Going down to London to stay with some other friends and flying out of Heathrow on the 5th.

  • Journeyer22/10/2009 at 04:27

    I am not here.

Has this been brought up? Another site linked to it. Behind the paywall though.

    Busy Times Ahead in Paris

However, what I read had this FTA:

Allegedly only 12 teams have to date signed the Resource Restriction Agreement, which is, in turn, a requirement of the Concorde Agreement, and therefore a condition of 2010 (and beyond) entry. According to a source well-versed with matters Concorde, the Article referring to entries states that teams who have competed in the world championship for the past five years (and been placed in the top ten in two of the most recent three seasons) receive absolute priority, with the application of the Article not being affected by change of name or engine. Thus, regardless of which newcomer has not signed up to the RRA and/or Concorde Agreement, Qadbak is due priority regardless of whether the team had lodged an entry.

This is explosive stuff. From the looks of it, 2 of the new teams haven't signed this RRA yet, and that may allow Qadbak (who must have signed this back as BMW) back into the picture. I suspect said 2 teams in trouble are Lotus and Campos.

So why was he paying for his own air travel if he had one of those? Didn't Top Gear prove the Veyron was faster than air travel?

Good and well, but that shouldn't be a one-off - if anything, they should do the same for future editions. Not because of a postal strike, but because information should be available much quicker now.

  • Christine22/10/2009 at 09:00

  • Stuart C22/10/2009 at 09:44

    Morning all.

Terrible Thursday got off to an early start thanks to Mrs C's 8am dental appointment, and is progressing through a dreary squall of yearbook-related malarkey.

What do we think of the Telegraph, by the way?

A dying institution, thanks to the cost-cutting measures instituted by the current proprietors (famously described by a former editor as "a stinking mob"). One of the wheezes was to get rid of all the sub-editors, which means that most copy now reaches the page without even elementary checks – although some work is outsourced to digital sweat shops in Australia, apparently. You can read all about it in Private Eye.

  • Stuart C22/10/2009 at 09:46

*takes the dive into Windows 7*

Let’s hope I come out the other side with it working!

You make this sound like the hopeless operating system equivalent of Shelley Winters' heroic final gesture in The Poseidon Adventure...

  • James22/10/2009 at 09:47

    How come?

Well I'm tempted to delete the second post I wrote but because I've numbered them it would be obvious, mind you I hid number 9 because of what I said about the Piquets. :)

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 09:49

You can read all about it in Private Eye.

The Telegrasp are also masters of the traffic catching wheezes. They watch google trends and ever hour journos are sent to write articles about things which are popular. They always write an article explaining what the Google Doodle is about for example.

  • Journeyer22/10/2009 at 09:53

the irony of this is, because of the royal mail strike, some people may just realize that mail for some may have just become an antiquated concept.

  • Stuart C22/10/2009 at 10:57

    so copy/paste still doesn’t work.

Why make Maitland's non-job easy for him?

  • Journeyer22/10/2009 at 10:58

Why make Maitland's non-job easy for him?

that's an excellent point, and may explain why it doesn't work.

  • me22/10/2009 at 11:00

Well I'm tempted to delete the second post I wrote but because I've numbered them it would be obvious, mind you I hid number 9 because of what I said about the Piquets. :)

i would suggest that it isn't the numbering that's the problem. it's your desire to bury the archives.

embrace your mistakes. no-one can get it right all the time.

  • me22/10/2009 at 11:02

Why make Maitland's non-job easy for him?

hehe. when you mentioned digital sweatshops in australia earlier, i assumed he'd found a new job :)

however, lack of c/p does makes it hard for us to quote an article for genuine discussion.

  • Journeyer22/10/2009 at 11:05

i would suggest that it isn't the numbering that's the problem. it's your desire to bury the archives.

just as well then that your archives are up. which reminds me, i must get to listening to some of the old EPs in the offseason... :D

  • Journeyer22/10/2009 at 11:06

hehe. when you mentioned digital sweatshops in australia earlier, i assumed he'd found a new job

digital sweatshops are there to do mostly grammatical encoding/editing on very minimal pay (usually on a per page basis). there's quite a few of them here.

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 11:08

Hello again :) I survived! it works!

Woohoo... Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?

  • James22/10/2009 at 11:09

Hello again :) I survived! it works!

Although it still has the completely moronic User Account Control grrrrrrrrrrr. turns it off and throws a brick at it*

Yay! how you finding it so far? :)

Well I'm tempted to delete the second post I wrote but because I've numbered them it would be obvious, mind you I hid number 9 because of what I said about the Piquets. :)

Hehe you are right, however I'll never make the post numbered 9 public last thing I want is the Piquet's finding it, considering I blamed Crashgate on them.

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 11:10

Woohoo... Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?

I did a clean install, upgrade sounded a bit dodgy but it went perfectly fine with the clean install and everything seems to be working ok! I'm kinda impressed at how quickly everything works and loads after how slow things were with Vista most of the time... early days yet though ;)

Apart from that nasty dastardly user account control which has been turned off, locked away and thrown to the sharks!

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 11:11

Plus grouping all the icons in a hidden area of the taskbar is a big thumbs up from me. No more little program icons scattered across the bottom, woohoo

I really like the little touches... maybe I'm easily impressed...

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)22/10/2009 at 11:14

Apart from that nasty dastardly user account control which has been turned off, locked away and thrown to the sharks!

What is this user account control thingy?

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 11:17

What is this user account control thingy?

Its a dialog box that pops up pretty much everytime you do something. IE. 'Do you want to open this program?' 'Do you want to download this?' 'Do you want to install this program?' 'Are you aware we are driving you mad with this option?'... it greys the screen, stops you from doing anything else until you click yes or no. Surely, if you are going to install something, you want to install it!

The first time I used Vista it kept coming up constantly every few seconds and it drove me mental!!! Luckily you can turn it off (although it's quite hidden away in the control panel in Vista) very easily on this but I honestly don't see the point in it!

  • James22/10/2009 at 11:17

Blog Plug: I've done a post featuring a lot of F1 adverts, http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/15-formula-one-adverts/ I've probably had the most fun with this post.

Which leads me to ask, how can hide part of my post as right now on my main blog page are a lot of youtube videos and it would be nice to hide them?

  • me22/10/2009 at 11:17

i actually (heart) royal mail today.

And would you know it, after almost three months of not receiving my issue on the day of publication, this week's issue has just popped through my letterbox!

Am liking this new digital Autosport, but it might be just my monitor, but some of the text is a little difficult to read? Could do with a zoom-inside-a-zoom feature.

  • Jeremy22/10/2009 at 11:21

if there's one thing Microsoft are good at, it's making sure they can't get sued for not providing a secure operating system :P

yeah. it looks like it's been scanned in? rather than exported from indesign (or whatever they use for page layout).

agreed. if it were purely digital, the text would be crisp, whereas it feels like i need to pop to specsavers.

however, that isn't a complaint. just an observation.

Maybe. Don't really mind though, certainly better than nothing.

I hope this will be a regular thing and if they put together an archive of previous issues I'd be a happy bunny.

Problems with your Observations? You should have gone to specsavers

  • Stuart C22/10/2009 at 11:31

embrace your mistakes. no-one can get it right all the time.

Quite. At the beginning of 2000 I airily announced, "If Jenson Button gets the Williams drive, I'll eat my computer," and then flounced off to the Detroit motor show.

When I got back there was a post-it note attached to said device, upon which J Noble had written, "Feeling hungry?"

Ultimatly it is up to you, but if they are long posts then I would. for example a post this length I think you should: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/brazil-qualifying-throwing-out-the-baby-with-the-bathwater/

I'm an RSS luddite so I don't have any feeds. I'll visit a site to see what's what via the front page, or follow links.

    Afternoon Jon.

Same, i have a bookmark folder on my bookmark bar called "Blog" which have all my following blogs in, or else they are in the "F1" folder, which confusingly has a link to BTCC's website in it

  • Jon Waldock22/10/2009 at 11:47

    she's away till tomorrow night

ah yes, but she'll no doubt try and catch up when she gets back.

she tried to catch up on 2 weeks of comments after valencia, so 3 days is nothing ;)

  • James22/10/2009 at 11:47

    Both.

    For Lou

That would annoy me because I'd see which trophies hadn't been won.

  • Christine22/10/2009 at 11:48

So, the question is, am I hungry, and can I bothered to go outside?

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)22/10/2009 at 11:48

    Sorted?

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 12:03

    From that article earlier:

Next I popped the Windows 7 disk into my PC's DVD drive. Windows ran a second compatibility check and flagged up four more problems. It told me to uninstall iTunes, but thoughtfully advised me to "de-authorise" my computer first (otherwise Apple would limit my options to move music to other computers); I also had to get rid of the Google Toolbar and the software controlling my ATI Radeon video card - at least until after the upgrade.

Not sure how that helps you tough

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 12:18

Oh I get that, but to keep deleted posts seems a bit silly.

Why should you be able to delete what I have?

I agree that you should be able to delete it if you want to though.

Well OK it's four then - but since the 'upgrade' to OS3 and the netbook, I can't be bothered surfing on the Touch now :(

I did a test post and deleted it now it will stay in the feed on google reader.

    Shame... I don't carry a laptop/netbook with me so it's a bit different.

Also the new update to the OS does seem to have improved it

  • Stuart C22/10/2009 at 12:21

    I can’t…. it won’t let me?

Then hit it with the back of your shoe!

Hmm I find the screen too small and I like to do more than one thing at once.

And I STILL have that problem with connecting to a username/password Wifi server :(

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 12:22

I did a test post and deleted it now it will stay in the feed on google reader.

Yes... Good... If I had gone to your site and saw your post I could have copied your post and kept it on my computer even if you didn't want me to. Which is why Google Reader does the same.

The other day a post got pulled from a website I read for legal reasons. But I wanted to be able to keep it, which is fine because Google Reader does that for me.

  • Alex Andronov22/10/2009 at 12:23

Ah Percussive Maintenance. It's the best way really.

I'm sure if I had a train journey as long as yours I would think differently. For me half of my commute time is walking. The rest involves two trains (and a change between them). So not having to have a bag is an enormous win.

I realise that and keeping actual posts is a good idea but considering this was a post about absolutly nothing and only have the word "blah" in it, it doesn't really need to stay.

  • Jon Waldock22/10/2009 at 12:25

Ok so maybe i'm not going right at this moment....the bus was just reversing out of its space as i got there and the man wouldn't let me on :(

If he knew why i was trying to get that bus he would, but he just waved me off. BOOO :(

I must be doing something every time, because it's only me that does it. But i honestly can't work out what, i do the same thing every single time. Its odd

  • me22/10/2009 at 12:56

thank you :) sorry about being totally inept with doohickey :(

i did figure out what you're doing the other day, so we can at least fix it at some point in the future. i think you're losing the second quote character when you paste a link.

however, the simple solution i just to paste links as text and they'll be auto-shortened.

  • James22/10/2009 at 12:56
  • me22/10/2009 at 12:57

That's okay. Blame the designer, I always do :)

in this case it's true. although my failing was adding a "link" button that assumes implicit knowledge of valid html.

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 12:57

for people wondering about Windows 7, not Lukeh now obviously :)

That's a lot of 7's for one post, phew

i did figure out what you're doing the other day, so we can at least fix it at some point in the future. i think you're losing the second quote character when you paste a link.

so i have blockquote and link, but dont have the /block quote?

  • James22/10/2009 at 12:59

but at least Jenson won at the races where they had decent trophies :)

    http://www.aut.../photo.php/id/1320873

Looking at that picture again, I really like those "badges" on the wall behind him.

  • Jon Waldock22/10/2009 at 12:59

thats the wierd thing, if im linking then i'll (nearly) always check the html is right, but clearly its the ones where i forget where it goes wrong

  • Jon Waldock22/10/2009 at 12:59

Looking at that picture again, I really like those "badges" on the wall behind him.

They'll be on his car next season i bet, Ferrari did it with theirs too

  • me22/10/2009 at 13:00

so i have blockquote and link, but dont have the /block quote?

your links look something like this: <a href=">

    instead of: <a href="">

note the one double quote in the first and the two in the second.

  • James22/10/2009 at 13:01

They'll be on his car next season i bet, Ferrari did it with theirs too

I didn't know that, but there is something about the BrawnGP ones that just looks really nice.

  • Jon Waldock22/10/2009 at 13:02

note the one double quote in the first and the two in the second.

ah ok, that makes sense. i hardly ever use "" when im writing, so that would explain what happens

  • me22/10/2009 at 13:03

ah ok, that makes sense. i hardly ever use "" when im writing, so that would explain what happens

will still fix it at some point when we gets a chance.

What would be the last application you think would get released for the iPhone... Well they released Photoshop the other week and that seemed mad, but this... Well... There is now a video editing application for the iPhone... No really...

I just made a video of fourstar and have uploaded it to the drop. It has titles, transitions... Bonkers!

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/22-10-2009-13-31

    It's called ReelDirector

Well they have some sensible transitions... But that wouldn't really point out the bonkersness of it as much.

Well I had just said to him before we started... "Adrian, I'm about to record you so that I can make a video of you to upload to the internet okay." He said what about and I said, "too late it's started."

    Yes long suffering!

Dank, any truth to the rumors that Red Bull will use Cosworth next year? Are they still on with Renault for next year? I assume Merc is a long shot by now.

I reckon they may well go with Cosworth...

Are you still keeping your Red Bull contacts open?

  • Dank22/10/2009 at 16:28

Are you still keeping your Red Bull contacts open?

Yeah I have been in contact with them recently. They did suggest that there might be a few things I can do for them which I'm still waiting to hear more about.

USF1 are interested in having Kyle Busch in their car for 2011. How exactly does a NASCAR driver get a superlicence?

Honestly though, with 2 British world champions on the grid - will the REALLY be no British GP next year?

Germany had 2 races - the German and European GP's off of the back of The Cheating German's success. Spain has two because of Alonso....

That Britain will be left with 0 next year, when it's the hotbed of F1 (6 teams are based in the UK) is unthinkable...

Mark Hughes had some interesting little items in his column today that I was not aware. We knew Ari had asked for some French legal people to reciew the election procedure and Max shot him down saying that the French legal people were already involved. Well it turns out that there have been one or two changes to the procedure as a result of Ari's complaint.

Voters will no longer have to put their vote in an envelope with their name on it. They will have a free choice of blank envelopes. Why should they have their names on the envelope I wonder?

The Ugandan association head has claimed that a representative of Todt's who is apparently in line to be vice president of sport had approached him and offered to pay the Ugandan associations outstanding subscriptions assuming they voted for Todt.

Looks like if Todt gets elected there could be a legal challenge

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 18:14

Does that mean there is no chance of a British GPin 2010?

I will repeat something I said two minutes after the Donington deal was announced in the first place. There will be a British GP in 2010 at Silverstone. No ifs. No buts. No maybes

I will repeat something I said two minutes after the Donington deal was announced in the first place. There will be a British GP in 2010 at Silverstone. No ifs. No buts. No maybes

Perhaps, I dont think bernie would say it would go there if that was what he intended though.

It makes no sense from a negociation point of view.

  • Scott Woodwiss22/10/2009 at 18:17

The Ugandan association head has claimed that a representative of Todt's who is apparently in line to be vice president of sport had approached him and offered to pay the Ugandan associations outstanding subscriptions assuming they voted for Todt.

Still as slimy as ever. No surprise there then.

    Oh, evening all. :P

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 18:23

It makes no sense from a negociation point of view.

When Bernie did the deal with Brands Hatch16 years ago or whatever it was he knew Brands would never get the planning permission they needed and he knew the race would be at Silverstone but by giving the contract to Brands he forced Silverstone to up its game and he got a nice cheque from the people at Brands to get out of their contract so effectively for several years of the contract he got paid twice for one race.

Anyone looking at the amount of work Donington was planning knew there was no way it could happen. No-one else has a contract for anything like 17 years. The only reason for that is that it makes the forfeit fee higher.

So Silverstone have to be ready to run the race if/when Donington fails or they will bever get the race again. Bernie gets a fat fee from Gillet. Bernie's mat Tom Wheatcroft who owns Donington gets his circuit back with a load of work done to it for free and everyone bar Gillet wins.

  • me22/10/2009 at 18:25

Guys, I don't want to appear to step out of line at all here - and it's not my intention to upset anyone (famous last words....)

But where is the harm in injecting some of your own thoughts etc into blog posts?

I try to if I can, or I feel it adds value to what I'm writing - and it's one way of making your blog different to others that are out there. A way of making it more personal and not just another 'news' site if you will?

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 18:26

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 18:34

RE: Gavin's comments it really gets to me when the tabloid press resort to these low tactics in their articles. It cheapens the publications in my eyes when they do so.

I was going to do a *Nelson-Piquet-Watch* earlier in the season on my site, as it was clear he was on his way out of Renault if he didn't buck his ideas up.

I didn't as you never know who reads your blogs, and as silly as it sounds I didn't want to upset him or anyone associated with team-piquet. Funny as it could have been - and I'm sure it would have generated traffic we didn't know what was going on internally at Renault (More than we thought now....) and it's still his job at the end of the day.

If someone I didn't know commented that they thought I was doing was bad I'd wait for them after school and have an old-fashoned discussion with them!

OT - I guess it's the business side of my brain taking over. There's a fairly high staff turnover in my field and the amount of people I've seen leave a company burning every bridge behind them thinking they'll be ok, only to meet up with their old boss / apply for a job with their old boss in a new organisation is staggering.

Wow - that went on a bit!

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 18:40

    what??

Gary Anderson was on great form and ranting away again. He was discussing cost cutting and asking how new teams were supposed to compete. He also suggested something I have said for years. There should be a maximimu number of people involved i a pit stop. He suggested 7. One per wheel, front and rear jack man and a lollipoman. Personally I would lose two of the wheel changers and let people decide whether to gamble on changing two tyres or do all four.

I would also like to see air jacks re-introduced and then you can not only cut a jackman but remove the risk of him being mown down.

It is getting back to the way it was in the 80s where half the people on the grid had won races. It has a bit to go to catch up to 1982 though where 11 different drivers won in one season.

i haven't read all of it. am going to have to before the night is out.

The more I read of his stuff the more I want him to relace EJ on BBC next season. He is one of the few people with serious experience and a radical view of how the sport should change. Most of the others deal with the situation immediatel in front of them but he has a genuine overview of what the cars and the sport should be like and there are very few insiders who express that if they have it in the first place.

I also much preferred his version of the 2009 tech regs to the OWG fudge we got.

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 18:50

I had another one of my silly ideas today regarding overtaking.

It'd send the purists of the sports absolutely mental, but I think that Button proved on Sunday that when the drivers want too overtaking IS possible in F1.

However, it was accentuated by the fact he was in a fast car out of position in relation to the drivers around him. Grosjean, Kobayashi, Nakajima etc...

Is there an arguement for getting rid of qualifying and starting grids in reverse order based on WDC position? There would be plenty of action on track as those in the quick cars fight their way to the front (Think Kimi @ Suzuka in 2005)

Failing that add financial incentives to finishing positions. It would tie in with the FIA's cost cutting plans. Limit the amount of money available to the drivers to say $1,000,000 in salary. But reward finishing positions by offering prize money.

Standardised across the grids, there are no guarenteed financial objectives to driving for the teams who can afford to pay you (Ralf Schumacher @ Toyota for example) but we'd reward those who went out and RACED. There's the incentive to do well and get into the Maccas / Ferraris and Brawns of this world.

Put the two together and I'm sure things would get spiced right up. What effect it'd have on the quality of the grid if you get more money elsewhere would be but still....

It'd send the purists of the sports absolutely mental, but I think that Button proved on Sunday that when the drivers want too overtaking IS possible in F1.

The reason there was overtaking on Sunday was that we had wet qualifying so all the cars with a wet set up were at the front of the grid and a dry race so all the cars at the back of the grid were massively faster than those at the front.

Do you really think drivers cruise around in low positions because they can't be bothered to overtake or because they are not getting paid to? They do it because overtaking is not possible. It is a technical and circuit problem

F1 has to reward excellence. It is a sport not a circus. You cannot have reverse grids unless you are prepared to have all the other circus staff like points for leading the most laps or for the fast pit stop or the shiniest car

    A few hours...

It's basically all hexagons, circles, squares and odd shapes here and there. Plus I basically had the album taped onto my TV so I could stay true to it and because of my horribly perfectionist way of doing that kind of stuff. Considering once again it's all done with a controller it's nice and rewarding when it's finished. Plus the other car I finished today, obviously the Sidepodcar, is absolutely dominating and watching replays of the Sidepodcar is always fun :D

Personally I would be one of the purists up in arms if such a thing was implemented! I was bored this afternoon and my mind tends to wander in such situations....

What they need to do is simple. Slash downforce and don't have as many corners per mile. Don't have stret tracks and get rid of chicanes if necessary by replacing them with proper corners. And magically the racing will return. The cars are way to fast for the circuits just now

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 19:04

And knocked down the iconic Dunlop Bridge :(

Imagine if Wheatcroft had tried that. He would have been slaughtered but it was necessary for the GP so when Wheatcroft eventually returns Donington to racing again he will get the hero treatment despite doing a deal with Gillett in the first place

HOW. THE. HELL! YOU HAVE FORZA 3 ALREADY?!?!?!

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 19:08

It seems everyone with the answers hasn't been listened too. People have been banging on for ages that the racing would return if:

    A. Downforce was reduced

    B. Mechanical grip was increased

    C. Braking distances are increased.

They got 2 out of 3 right this season (to some effect) but the braking is still an issue....

The circuits I also agree with. The endless construction of the soul-less Tilke-dromes is getting to me, but that also goes hand in hand with the expansion to markets that really don't care about the racing, or can't afford to watch. The empty grandstands in China, Malaysia, and Turkey this year was nothing short of criminal when you know that Imola, Canada and to a lesser extend Indianapolis would be sold out and packed months before the races what very dis-heartening.

I mean, look at Suzuka FFS - their grandstands where 75% full on the Thursday when there was no racing!

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 19:10

HOW. THE. HELL! YOU HAVE FORZA 3 ALREADY?!?!?!

HOW. THE. HELL! YOU HAVE FORZA 3 ALREADY?!?!?!

forza 3 with sidepodcar no less...

    *runs*

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 19:10

If it's that simple, why didn't the OWG think of it?

Because they are more interested in their own team winning and have a whole load of other stuff to consider. Imagine Paddy Lowe going back to Ron Dennis and saying oh BTW Ron we are banning rear wings. He would get fired because the rear wing is a prime sponsor site. They have too many outside pressures on them.

It is easy to see what needs to be done because once upon a time we had lots of overtaking and then it stopped. What changed? The circuits developed a plague of chicanes and a lot more corners and Chapman and co discovered advanced aerodynamics. So all we have to do is go back and look at the point where overtaking stopped and learn the lessons from it.

We need cars with low downforce and high drag so that they are faster through a corner while following another car than they are on their own and we need long straights with tight corners at the end so that there are long braking distances and multiple lines through the corners.

  • Scott Woodwiss22/10/2009 at 19:11

    A. Downforce was reduced

    B. Mechanical grip was increased

    C. Braking distances are increased.

Downforce was reduced by a tiny amount maybe 15% in the end but we still have vastly sensitive aero. Look at some of the recent front wing end plates for example. When I say slashed I mean slashed by 80-90 after the clever guys have recovered what they can.

That is one of th things I have said for years. Single element short chord wings with a standard profil all along the wing. So no spoons in the middle or dips and swoops or anhedral or dihedral. Nice simple straightforward sponsor friendly wings with small single piece endplates or better still no endplates

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 19:24

A vibrant modding community makes games like this.

Who here played Geoff Crammond's GP2? I loved that game, and the fact it was so easy to mod kept the whole thing fresh for much longer than the actual life of the game IMHO.

I loved being able to race with my own helmet design in any season from the 70's to the present day (2003 I think was the last time) for example

Talking of Lakeside, has anyone here been karting at the track opposite?

I nearly killed myself there last year (ok, ok a bit overly dramatic) but I did book a one way ticket to the tyre barrier after the flat out chicane on the back straight - (the downhill one) in the wet. Got a bit squiffy as I was chasing someone down and before I even knew what was happening I was spinning off the track across the mud into the tyres. Honestly, it terrified me at the time as I didn't slow down until I hit the wall. And it hurt!

You could roll back 40 years of car develoment and race the classic cars...

In my mind its cleer the cars should be lined up in a different order at each race, wheter that be done by formula, reversed grids or reverse championship order.

It takes nothing away from the sport, in fact its pretty similar to the idea of seeding teams in cup draws or wimbledon

    "Le Mans" Starts for everyone.

Probably best if I stay away from the OWG, or I'll have everyone running round a pole 10 times and playing 'Hole in the Wall' and doing a lap of the track on uni-cyles before making their way to the grid.

Off Topic, but I've just seen the Campos META (don't forget the capitals) website. I used to have that title image as a wallpaper on my PC in 2006!

It was a camera attached to the airbox of Rubens' car at the Hungary grand prix and fired by remote. I think Darren Heath took it IIRC.

How have Campos META (don't forget the caps) got away with that one??!

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 20:10

There is an interesting story on 5live at the moment about a woman taking the premier league to court over their monopoly on tv coverage. The originally tried to prosecute her for using a foreign satellite to broadcast football

Its gone though all the courts and will now be heard at the european level.

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 20:11

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 20:14

It takes nothing away from the sport, in fact its pretty similar to the idea of seeding teams in cup draws or wimbledon

It is takes the whole essence of the sport away from rewarding excellence to dumb luck. Why do you think you are going to get overtaking if you do that anyway? How many times have we watched a fast car stuck behind a slow car unable to pass him?

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 20:15

how do you explain the coincidence between the mixed up grid and all the overtaking at the weekend?

Some cars were on wet set up and some on dry set up. The wet cars were fast in the wet in quali and slow in the dry in the race because they had so much drag from their higher downforce etc

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 20:15

It is more likely to end restrictive pay per view deals which is good for everyone apart from the TV stations who used to say that nothing that was currently available free to air would be put on pay per view.

I would love to see the end of PPV sports. I hope the knock on of this isn't increased subscription prices to sports channels etc though....

It is more likely to mean that because there is one European market intheory at least that you have the right to buy a Bulgarian system and get the same thing for less

  • Lady Snowcat22/10/2009 at 20:27

Plus if there is no qualifying we could have 2 dayrace weekends instead of 3, then we could have more races…

But for we race goers I love going to the track for three days...

    Don't wish that away...

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 20:29

But for we race goers I love going to the track for three days...

Aye, the British Grand Prix is the highlight of my year. As I get older the time I get to spend with my friends becomes less and less, I value the weekend away with the boys as much as the race...

Don't take that away from me!

  • Nick22/10/2009 at 20:35

    Don't wish that away...

    Im afraid i have to.

2 day race weekends would greatly reduce the costs of running the event and make it more accessible to people like me that have never had the opperunity to go.

If its any consolation most countries could have 2races so you could have 2 weekends to attend instead of 3.

  • Daniel22/10/2009 at 20:35

Lots of Jenson pictures on the drop from tuesday night, now :-)

Sorry Nick but that is rubbish...

I promise you that the overseas ones are much more fun and the moveable circus that is F1 costs loads of dosh every time it moves.... it would send costs up not down for the teams and the spectators who would travel miles for two days fun rather than three...

No good for the real F1 fans who never miss Friday if they can help it....

Most countries can't afford to lose money more than once a season....

I'd probably end up doing less days as the flying and hotel costs would be too high proportionately.... and for what??... less time on track and a more frenetic lifestyle all round...

Actually it should all go the other way... an extra testing day on the Thursday or Monday.... partly for test drivers of course....

  • RG22/10/2009 at 21:00

Actually it should all go the other way... an extra testing day on the Thursday or Monday.... partly for test drivers of course....

Thursdays : Whole day of testing, but only for test drivers

Fridays: Two two hour? practice sessions with race drivers

Saturday: Practice session followed by qualifying

    Sunday: The race

Something like that? More car on track time.

  • James22/10/2009 at 21:01

Well, Wednesday? Well, that would be annoying for the locals.

Okay, first flaw in the plan.

Well, I'm think more for the reserve drivers to get some track time as well.

  • RG22/10/2009 at 21:04

Well, I'm think more for the reserve drivers to get some track time as well.

Or they could do it at say 9 pre-selected races, so avoiding any possible logistal problems

  • James22/10/2009 at 21:05

Well, I'm think more for the reserve drivers to get some track time as well.

Well you can do that at every other track, have Monaco as it is now.

I guess since i have never been to a race, let alone a friday sesion, so i am not a real f1 fan.

Fair enough, think i will head off on that note, night all.

(That is an F1 question you will recognise)....

PMSL :-) How about using a foreign translation of motorsport or similar?

Sure, am away this weekend 'tup norf int dales', but can try and do it next week if so ? Might be worth asking Lou, as she was there too :-)

  • Steven Roy22/10/2009 at 21:21

PMSL :-) How about using a foreign translation of motorsport or similar?

I did a couple of endurance kart races with a Brzilian guy in the team. We decided we wanted a Portugese name just to be different so we ended up with velocidad which is Portugese for speed

    Evening all

  • Adie22/10/2009 at 21:34

That's actually a very good point Mr C.

Every other weekend would fit and make it much easier for the casual to watch.

However, I can see the arguement for a mid season break for the teams. I think racing until almose November time is too long though.

  • Lukeh22/10/2009 at 21:36

Lou says she didn't really get as much time to see it all as she didn't get there till 3-ish so she hasn't got much to write about it, which makes sense as she was still in school till then... Her brief summary was 'I saw that Jenson was there, he got in a car and we sang queen' so she's unsure if that sentence is worth a whole article :P

    Ah okay, didn't know that ! :-)

  • Pat W22/10/2009 at 22:13

Maybe. Less pigeon-holed and requiring less regular updating this time. Hopefully!

wouldn't more sports = more work?

You'd think so but I manage to avoid it ;-)

  • Pat W22/10/2009 at 22:15

What other motorsports were you thinking about?

Anything really. Like to think I have a broad range of knowledge across most categories (except perhaps NASCAR and the like).

Good to see you aren't turning your back on blogging. I think most motorsport blogs specialise on one (perhaps two) series, so I'm looking forward to what you come up with.

  • Pat W22/10/2009 at 22:20

    It's quiet here isn't it.

I've been mega busy emptying/cleaning the old flat and sorting out stuff in the new one (yesterday was my 'break' where I just did odd bits here and did the quiz). In the odd times I've been here this week I've noticed how quiet it is.

Fridays: Two two hour? practice sessions with race drivers

    Sunday: The race

Do this but with the test on Monday. If they test before the race, the race will suck.

*Things I learned today. Bluewater is in Kent not Essex.

Turns out I was thinking of the Lakeside shopping centre.

Just as well I didn’t make the effort to go and see JB on Tuesday….

Apparently, some were there at 9am, and Jenson about 10.

  • Alianora La Canta23/10/2009 at 17:00

    Terrible Thursday got off to an early start thanks to Mrs C’s 8am dental appointment, and is progressing through a dreary squall of yearbook-related malarkey. {Comment #319}

Which yearbook are you doing? I can't remember if you've told us yet or not.

  • Alianora La Canta23/10/2009 at 17:02

    This week’s Autosport is available digitally due to the lazy gits at the Royal Mail. {Comment #304}

I now feel pretty silly because it's the first time since the post-Spa issue that I've bought a paper version of Autosport from the newsagents (I also got a copy of Racing Engineering - my first one - while I was there).

  • Alianora La Canta23/10/2009 at 17:09

Quite. At the beginning of 2000 I airily announced, “If Jenson Button gets the Williams drive, I’ll eat my computer,” and then flounced off to the Detroit motor show.

    When I got back there was a post-it note attached to said device, upon which J Noble had written, “Feeling hungry?” {Comment #361}

How different would 2009 have been if Bruno Juncquiera had been given the nod?

While we're sharing blog mistakes, I typed that McLaren were almost certain to win the first court case in the McLaren/Ferrari mess... ...three hours before they comprehensively lost. Oops!

  • Alianora La Canta23/10/2009 at 17:11

    Question – how many people here use the frontpage of a blog when they read it? Or do they just access the posts directly thru links or feeds? {Comment #370}

If it's a blog I access frequently, then I almost invariably use the home page.

If I access the blog rarely, I almost invariably don't, because I will wait for someone to link the page (an elementary form of peer review).

  • Alianora La Canta23/10/2009 at 17:13

    I’m an RSS luddite so I don’t have any feeds. {Comment #373}

Hurrah! I'd almost despaired of finding anyone else who doesn't use an RSS feed reader.

I can only assume Force India doesn't either, else they'd know that their podcast's RSS feed broke between Spa and Monza. This means they have four podcasts that haven't appeared in the RSS feed...

    Subject to homologation ? The circuit has been fine for years ! {Comment #602}

The circuit also had substantial changes made to it to bring it to the latest version of the Category 1 standard, which means re-homologation was necessary.
