I had a bit of an idea, concerning the daily, in that guest writers could come along and take over the threads for a while, promoting their work and linking to the stories of the day that they find fascinating, rather than you always hearing from me. I've set up a wiki page for volunteers, and although the details are sketchy at the moment, let us know if you'd like to get involved.

  • In charity news, long-time commentor Andy is growing a moustache in November and encouraging donations for doing so. We've given a little bit to support the cause and you can do the same here. Also, if you want to see the moustache in progress, here ya go!
  • It is the second roundup of posts from Pitlane Fanatic, with Something For the Weekend II. I really like these recommendations, and particularly enjoy the roundup of Thursday Thoughts. Excellent stuff from Jackie, keep it up please!

That'll do it for now. There should be a live debrief later on today, so if you have an hour or two to spare on a Sunday night, we should be going live about 7ish. Don't hold me to that and we'll be in the comments to keep you updated. See you there.

under the image of google's autocomplete suggestion in the last post, the author has written "Maybe it’s just mad you keep slamming the door in its face."

its in grey text and when I first looked at the site I missed these little gems. they add to the hilarity

ah-ha. good stuff. i don't know much about boston, what do you like about it?

it's not Italy ;) I work with top class professional people but the city has this young youthful feel because of all the college students here. And there's the river and the water (I just had mountains for two years). I did a duck tour (truck and boat thing) of boston today and learnt some history and cruised around on the water. The weather will get brutal but this place just feels good to me. Nice to speak my own language of course too. I think a lot of my sense of humour lies in the jokey English so people get my jokes here and I am what I am. Very nice.

  • Jeremy22/11/2009 at 01:37

    I know :-(

I won't make any promises, but if I can go to bed early enough, I will aim to get up at 6am here (GMT+11 ;-) ) in time for debrief

the easiest way is via the free flickr app, and a free flickr account.

you could also email pics to the drop from the phone, but note the email address changed recently.

The counting was AMAZING. I'm not asleep but I'm very impressed. I need to be up for about 15 minutes then go back to bed, then I might have a chance of sleeping.

I've just sent three pics. Nothing spectacular but you'll see the duck, a famous bridge you might have seen in Boston Legal. the good photos are on the good camera which is filling up fast.

oh Australia. I thought you meant Austria ;) so no never cared at all ;) was this a friendly or the start of some series that will be hard to follow from here.

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 02:00

Australia absolutely dominated the game and should have won by 20 points at least. They had won break where they had 3 player overlapping with one Scottish player defending and instead of just passing down the line till there was a gap they tried this enormous floating pass to winger but the ball went about 10 yards forward

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 02:01

please tell me I'm reading that wrong

    Scotland NINE Australia EIGHT :D

    Is that better?

  • Paul22/11/2009 at 02:02

    Is that better?

    no, not really ;-)

I thought drawing with ireland was bad......

  • The Boston Red Scott22/11/2009 at 02:03

not to an Aussie. This is a half time score right?:)

It's the Autumn tests. Australia, NZ and Argentina are all on tours in Europe. NZ beat England and Wales beat Argentina

I loved watching welsh play six nations (five?) the last few years. They are going pretty well but no offence, a draw with Ireland and a loss to Scotland is hard to take even if Scotland was named after me, but before I was born.

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 02:06

    They are struggling badly.

yeah i heard. My parents are north of Sydney and they cranking up the airco. And I think I heard about Melbourne (saw a headline when I signed out of email). You in Canberra Paul? How hot today?

Six nations since Italy was added about ten years ago. I was surprised that the manager of Australia is a Kiwi but then we have an Englishman

at the coast today for a bit of relief. Getting sick of ever day over 35

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 02:09

No. It's proper rugby. Scotland don't play the silly 13 a-side game

  • The Boston Red Scott22/11/2009 at 02:10

Six nations since Italy was added about ten years ago. I was surprised that the manager of Australia is a Kiwi but then we have an Englishman

the italian team is a joke. As for who coaches who, as long as the money is good, betraying your nation does not matter anymore ;)

It's awesome! :D I had a power cut apparently today as all my clocks on my appliances have reset. Our substation is flooded. They're bailing out water with buckets. I think that's more dedication to power maintenance than I could really muster.

I think bosotn might give you a run for the money. But I knew ppl that lived in Mongolia and handled 50 degrees below ( c or f it's still cold) so I cannot complain to them. Useless fact of the day- minus 40 is the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Macau is famous for crashes. F1 Wolf reporting that even the F3 warm up was stopped to remove crashed cars and the FBMW race was carnage. Only 9 finishers

    http://sidepodcast.com/playground/microblogging.php

  • me22/11/2009 at 02:45

have made a tiny update to live commenting / real-time this evening. am not expecting issues but you never know.

in the past, every request to look for new comments resulted in a small amount of data being returned, regardless of whether there were any new comments.

it was only about 4kb for each request, not a huge overhead even on mobiles. the data returned was used to update the "status" message at the top of the page.

however, have now found a way to make that small amount of data redundant, so if there are no new comments available, no data is returned at all. a small side-effect is the "status" message might not be reporting correctly for the next couple of hours (just until all the cached code gets refreshed).

This Mika fellow is singing on my TV. Do you think he would listen if I asked politely for him to change his name? He brings shame to proper Mikas everywhere.

I am now watching Australia v Australia in cricket. Can't they find another team?

I wish I could say "when I was born my dad was in space." Although, maybe he was, I don't actually know where he was. I assume he was in the room. I've never thought to ask.

I opened Twitter and two-thirds of the way down my Timeline, there was a dialog box with "Wondering who this person is?" (It was the first time the new version of Re-Tweet has affected my Timeline).

My first thought was "No, actually, I think I can work it out for myself."

You see, it was a tweet from Juan Pablo Montoya. I may possibly have heard of him before.

    Indeed. He was also lip synching which seems a little odd considering its Australian Idol and it's all about "talent" {Comment #113}

All the singers on British reality TV (aside from the contestants themselves) seem to lip synch, so he's not alone there. Admittedly, I haven't watched a big sample of it, but from what I have heard, real singing occurs in places observed by fewer people.

  • Lukeh22/11/2009 at 15:05

hes very religious and the hillsong church vote a lot.

    So its a popularity contest? I haven't taken much interest to be honest {Comment #153}

Yes. That's why I expect a pair of singers in the British competition who appear to be playing the show for laughs rather than as a serious singing competition will get to the final (but perhaps not win).

  • me22/11/2009 at 15:09

    pretty much. Not taking an interest is wise, the winners never really get seen again. The winner from last year did a free show in Melbourne last month and two people turned up. {Comment #157}

This is in contrast to the British equivalent, where the X Factor winner is guaranteed to be Christmas No. 1 (though this year the runner-up of Britain's Got Talent - a show whose rights are owned by the same man) - may have something to say/sing about it).

It means someone you follow thinks that his/her followers might be interested in that tweet. Which is fine if your tastes and whoever you are following are identical. Think of it as "Recommended Tweet".

Frequently they are not, though in this particular case it was a mildly interesting tweet and therefore justifiable.

They should but it's the same thing with twitter though, renders it a bit useless. Although I do like leaving lst.fm on my dashboard when doing work.

Twitter though is completely and utterly useless on the 360. Why leave a game and hunt it down on the dashboard just to tweet, then return to a game?

actually the worst Christmas song ever was the time he put the lyrics of the Lords Prayer to the music of Auld Lang Syne. I'd just blanked it out of my memory since it thankfully was not Christmas #1 (thanks Westlife!) but now its back, and I'm scared to sleep in case I dream about it.

  • Alianora La Canta22/11/2009 at 15:48

    Queen and disappointment in the same sentence? {Comment #347}

Any song that makes Christmas No. 1 despite not designed to cash in on Christmas is likely to be an exception to the "Christmas No. 1s are disappointments" rule. The litmus test for me is whether the song would have been released the previous Easter had it been finished to the same standard at that point. Hence why "Another Brick In The Wall" doesn't s an exception to the rule as well.

I will concede that the last three of the songs I have in my list do fit this rule; "Too Much" came to me via one of my brother's friends who needed somewhere to discard the album on which it came, "Sound of the Underground" sounded like a good idea at the time and "Hallelujah", for some reason, was a free download on last.fm earlier this year. I will concede that depending on my mood, I still like all three.

  • me22/11/2009 at 15:48

am just watching the video. even our very first attempt at chroma keying, using our own duvet cover produced better results than this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku7rLmJdmc0

surely he had a better setup than us?

I had a Mr Blobby towel for years after Mr Blobby went out of fashion. It was a good towel that didn't wear down even after a good half-decade of regular use...

There was a house in Brading on the Isle of Wight that was painted in Mr Blobby colours. I think there are friends who play practical jokes on each other & this was one. It was like it for some years

  • me22/11/2009 at 15:59

A half decade... are your eyes ok? I dont think that much pink and yellow can be healthy!

    :P

  • Nick in Dubai22/11/2009 at 16:02

F1 seems to have been a bit quiet today...

Perhaps its the lull before the big PK announcement :D

  • Amy22/11/2009 at 16:03

Worse, I have an overwhelming desire to listen to Blue due to this and I can't even see the link between that artist and this discussion (I'm not sure they've had a Christmas Top 5 let alone a #1, as a group or as individuals). No idea who to blame for that...

I am so good at One Love on Singstar. No one wanted to take me on in 2004.

  • Journeyer22/11/2009 at 16:03

Perhaps its the lull before the big PK announcement :D

Or the big Schumi announcement, if Bild is to be believed.

Either way, it's the calm before the storm that is BGP + MercGP fate, I reckon.

Just dropping by to say hi. ;)

    Charts are over-rated when you can make your own at last.fm. {Comment #313}

According to my last.fm profile, my Top 10 for this week is:

1 - Seether (Feat. Amy Lee) – Broken (up 5)

2 - Infernal – Self Control (Radio) (new entry)

3 - Beyoncé – Sweet Dreams (new entry)

    4 - Kelly Clarkson – Irvine (up 17)

5 - Savage Garden – To the Moon and Back (new entry)

    6 - Murray Gold – Doomsday (up 15 from previous week's chart)

6 - Destiny's Child – Dangerously in Love (new entry, last seen at #1 from 20 September chart)

6 - Kelly Clarkson – Can I Have a Kiss (new entry, last seen at #93 from 19 July chart, which was down 39 from the 5 July chart)

6 - Evanescence – My Tourniquet (new entry, last seen at #93 from 19 July chart and was new to that week's chart)

6 - Mariah Carey – It's Like That (new entry, previously seen before 7 June)

6 - Madonna – Papa Don't Preach (new entry, last seen at #67 from 7 June chart)

6 - Gwen Stefani – Wind It Up (down 5 from previous week's chart)

Since the #6 songs are tied on 3 plays each (partly because PDA and hi-fi plays aren't counted), the difficulty of me generating an individual chart is illustrated.

It will be interesting to see what it comes up with for a Christmas #1, since I do have a Christmas CD collection.

  • Alianora La Canta22/11/2009 at 16:32

What puzzles me about the above chart is that only one of my six most-played artists (Evanescence) is represented...

  • Scott Woodwiss22/11/2009 at 16:33

We're cooking enchilladas for dinner with garlic bread. Mmmm :P

  • Alianora La Canta22/11/2009 at 16:34

    either way i meant to draw the line at "another brick in the wall". {Comment #318}

Fair enough. Christmas 1979 will be 30 years ago in a few weeks, and boundary conditions are always hazy...

  • Alianora La Canta22/11/2009 at 16:41

as covers went, it was on par with all saints "never ever", to be forever marked:

    "should have thought about the lyrical content before agreeing to cover it" {Comment #364}

Well... ...I do have to admit that the last thing the line "It's a cold, it's a broken hallelujah" needed was a Beyoncé-esque melisma complete with bright big orchestral flourish - it's supposed to be the climax of a sad song, after all...

  • Alianora La Canta22/11/2009 at 16:43

    A half decade... are your eyes ok? I dont think that much pink and yellow can be healthy! {Comment #374}

I'm short-sighted, but that probably didn't have anything to do with the Mr Blobby towel since my parents had to pack said towel for much of that half-decade and didn't have deteriorating optical health in that time...

    LOL great comment!

Don't think much to the circuit design - although it looks as though it has passing opportunities at least ;)

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 17:54

    Isn't it a bit tighter?

In some places maybe but they all have sections where two cars side by side won't get through without crashing. Trouble is all those young guys think one race can make their career so all their logic is abandoned in favour of ridiculous gambles.

  • Alex Andronov22/11/2009 at 17:55

That's because they are told that Macau is the signature race and that some F1 drivers have won it in the past...

That start looked crazier than a short track race on iRacing!

  • Alex Andronov22/11/2009 at 17:56

Don't think much to the circuit design - although it looks as though it has passing opportunities at least ;)

it was difficult enough trying to explain to him that the car had to go in the slots. He was convinced the slots were the track lines and water to put the car in the middle.

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 18:00

That's because they are told that Macau is the signature race and that some F1 drivers have won it in the past...

It's the only time now that all the top drivers from the top F3 championships get together. It should establish who is the best but often it establishes who is best at avoiding accidents.

Some big names have made their reputation there. A certain German once rammed a bloke called Hakkinen because he couldn't overtake him. Mika crashed out and the German bloke won.

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 18:01

it was difficult enough trying to explain to him that the car had to go in the slots. He was convinced the slots were the track lines and water to put the car in the middle.

That's pretty logical for a kid that age. Most of them would ignore the lines

  • Scott Woodwiss22/11/2009 at 19:02

Ooooh, thats a gorgeous looking car.

Why thank you, RG. The logos on the skirts, front lip, rear bumper and windscreen strip are all part of the template livery which the guy who runs the series gifts everyone to work with. The number box was there as well, I just changed the numbers. :P

  • Scott Woodwiss22/11/2009 at 19:02

But the NewMan logo was all my work ;)

  • me22/11/2009 at 19:04

    Maybe its more

  • Janna22/11/2009 at 19:11

Just wondering where the debrief is being broadcast from. Will we still see the wonderful wallpaper at Christine's mother-in-laws or is there a new studio at Sidepodcast Towers?

  • Pat W22/11/2009 at 19:12

It used to be [email protected] now it is [email protected] and it will likely change again when the spam starts up once more. We are still looking for alternative solutions.

Can you ask people to email a gmail account which forwards it to a drop email address?

Lou, I went to Southampton for uni to what used to be called Southampton Institute (now Solent?). It was a good place to get used to being independent because while it is a biggish city, the middle is small enough to get around reasonably quickly. I wouldn't say it is a spectacular place though.

It was a good place to get used to being independent because while it is a biggish city, the middle is small enough to get around reasonably quickly. I wouldn't say it is a spectacular place though.

thank you Pat! I'm considering going to see Southampton Solent, The photography course looks great, it's not too far away from home, it's close enough to be able to get to brands when i want to get some photos, it's easy to get to london from there.. and they have x2 amazing trips that are part of the course, one to paris and one to new york..

It is a good location. I also looked at Portsmouth but it didn't grab me at all.

My time in Southampton was very mixed for all kinds of reasons, my sister really enjoyed her spell there though.

ahh.. but Brands is closer to home. so i can stay at home and get pictures over a weekend.. or use going home as an excuse to go to Brands :) i can go to Thruxton too :)

Thruxton is about an hour North, from memory.. I only went once while I lived there though. Perhaps more importantly, it is only an hour or so from Goodwood..

I'm the same actually. Solent was my secondary choice for uni.

the best photography course i've found i think is in Falmouth.. but i know i wont be able to cope with living that far away from home, plus i want to be closeish to london so i can see new exhibitions, as well as hopefully getting my foot in the door of a photography agency..

  • Pat W22/11/2009 at 22:04

I just checked the F1 and BTCC calendars for next year and the Thruxton round clashes with the Malaysian GP. That's annoying.

  • Chris22/11/2009 at 22:06

Right. Doing my first full race in F1 2009. Starting on pole, so wish me luck!

There's one in St Ives and a lot of artists swear by St Ives because Cornwall has light like nowhere else in the country.

there is one in St Ives?. yeah.. it's one of the best uni's for photography too but it is just so far away. i can barely go away for a week's holiday without feeling homesick. living on my own, with loads of new people, being so far away from home for such a long period of time is unthinkable. Uni is going to be a big enough step for me already as i'm really not good with change (you may have noticed). I like the idea of living close enough to be able to pop home over a weekend if i really need to..

i know alot of artists love it down there, and from photographs i've seen it just looks stunning.. but it's soooooo far away. maybe i'll persuade mum to take me down to Falmouth during the Christmas holidays so i can have a look.

I know. I understand. Thing is, you're still taking the hit for the depreciation on your car and the insurance, maintenance etc for 3 years in return for very little driving of it. If you don't need it regularly, you might well find you're cheaper getting taxis around in the holidays than keeping the car all year round.

I was only in a canoe once. It was all going really well for the first couple of minutes until I started thinking. I realised how stable it was and started wondering why it wasn't rocking around as I paddled. I decided to see how stable it was and it turned upside down and threw me out.

the quoted phrase of 'ships carry boats' is how I remember it (grandad was in the royal navy, dad was in the royal australian navy). Yes, ships are just big boats, but ships carry life boats because 'life ships' would just sound weird :)

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 22:41

My problem wasn't falling in as such. We were at Loch Doon in July so the being Scotland the water temperature was about ten degrees. The water looked about 4 feet deep so once I realised I was upside down in the water I decided to flip over and kick of the bottom. Unfortunately the bottom was not bottm but vegetation. By the time I had tried to kick off it a couple of times I was further down and panicking. Had I known I was in deep water I would have been fine but I didn't

it's been what.. 3 weeks since the end of the season now?

    he's probably in macau?

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 22:52

sadly not.. his website hasn't been updated for a while either.. the last email i got from him was back in september, he said he'd contact me and help me when he got back from the Asia races. I emailed him saying thank you etc.. and haven't heard anything.. it's been what.. 3 weeks since the end of the season now?

F1 Racing? I know he has a lot of pics in there normally

  • Alison22/11/2009 at 22:52

Mr C, the status at the top of the doohickey keeps flicking between connected and not connected. Is there something up with the site? It could just be my connection though, we have gale force winds.

  • lou22/11/2009 at 22:52

    he's probably in macau?

ahhh had no considered that. i shall check LAT's website and see what their most recent images from him were :)

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 22:52

listen to Steven. Clearly he has recovered from his canoe mishap.

I learned not to go back in a canoe. The closest I got was sand yaachting

f1 racing is the last time i saw any pics from him, he's their principle photographer. Some of his pics are in Jenson's book i think..

aww i should never be allowed on LAT's site.. it's amazing..

    look! young Jenson! aww

anyways.. i found out he took the shots of Jenson's factory visit to Brawn a while ago. I was half hoping for him to show up at the book signing but he didn't. i saw Andrew Ferraro though :)

  • Jeremy22/11/2009 at 23:00

"I was talking to Jenson the other day at his book launch...."

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:00

my uncle nearly killed me in one of those, great fun though!

I had seatbelts and a crash helmet and my head was well below the boom. Landed upside down quite a few times but I was belted in and the rear axle was so wide there was no way of being hurt. The closest I managed was when two of us were running up and down some hard wet sand close to the edge of the sea as the tide was coming in. What we didn't realise was that our bit of beach was a bit higher than the bit behind us until we found ourselves on a rapidly decreasing dry patch surrounded by sea. We had to just build up as much speed as possible and aim for dry land.

have you tried white water rafting? it's absolutely brilliant! with a proper life jacket on, when you jump, or get tipped out, you just bob around like a cork

That is on my list. The trouble is the older I get the bigger the list becomes. I always thought it was meant to work the other way

Any Sidepodders coming to Australia are welcome to stay.

he's a photographer that works for LAT. I knew i recognised one of the photographers and it wasn't until i got home and saw some of the photos on LAT from the book signing that i realised it was him.. he often has images in f1 racing too i believe.. i see his name a bit.. not as much as Lorenzo's though

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:22

not sure what i'm looking at though?

How often have you seen a goalkeeper sent off, his replacement sent off before he gets the shirt on and someone else sent off all resulting from the same incident. It is definitely one for football fans. The consultation between the referee and the linesman is because the team in red only have 6 players on the pitch so the match had to be abandoned when the team that scored from the penalty just took a 3-1 lead with very little time left. Had he not sent one of those players off they would have won but now there will be all sort of disciplinary hearings

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:23

Have you looked at UWE for photography.

    http://courses.uwe.ac.uk/w640/2010

Course was well thought of when I was there - there are ops to do units from other courses in the same faculty, including film and tv amoungst others... plus really good links to industry and the op. for placements with places like Future and Haymarket (alumni from UWE both pretty strong in those firms as well :-) )

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:23

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:27

i saw it. someone's going to have to explain the implications to me though?

First there is the Merc connection.

I posted this section from Joe's post at the time but I guess you missed it

Two years ago, when Wolff bought into HWA there started to be rumours that the company would like to be involved in Formula 1. To explain: HWA was set up by Hans-Werner Aufrecht (hence the company name HWA). Aufrecht was the founder in 1967 of AMG, which was established to tune Mercedes-Benz machinery for higher performance. As the Stuttgart company became more interested in the sport and in performance road cars so AMG expanded and in the end Aufrecht was bought out and AMG became a Mercedes division and brand. HWA took over the Mercedes-AMG entries in the DTM. It later expanded to be the provider of the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engines, which of late are being to referred to as Mercedes-HWA engines. When Wolff bought into HWA there were the first rumours that the company would like to be in Formula 1 as a secondary Mercedes-Benz team. His aim was to expand the company. HWA currently employs 224 employees and has not only static engine test rigs but also transient dynos. There was also talk of engine deals in America.

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:28

They never do - its always a well subscribed course regardless. I'm not sure who the current tutors are, but (mumble) years ago we had lecturers from all sorts of places, inc. a chap whose name I forget but who was also picture ed. for the telegraph....

    a) why would frank be interested in a selling shares to an individual who's connected to a rival team?

    b) is there anyone in f1 not linked to mercedes?

Lol. Its what happens when their grad scheme took 3 peeps one year, becomes self perpetuating after that. UWE is very very good at keeping up with its alumni, and reminding them about their 'old college'

you know Steven was saying there are lots of exciting ways to kill yourself when being an f1 photographer... i think i've just found another...

  • Jeremy22/11/2009 at 23:39

is the whole HWA thing about Frank getting Mercedes engines one day, or is there a chance he might want to be bought out completely, but only if the team gets to be AMG?

  • Lukeh22/11/2009 at 23:39

you know Steven was saying there are lots of exciting ways to kill yourself when being an f1 photographer... i think i've just found another...

    yikes...

    a) why would frank be interested in a selling shares to an individual who's connected to a rival team?

    b) is there anyone in f1 not linked to mercedes?

Presumably he is looking to sell the team before he dies and he will want to get it back to where it should be by then. Everyone believes the Merc engine is the best and most teams want it. He is now in a position to have a long term partnership agreement like McLaren have with Force India. When McLaren make their own engine presumably FIF1 will use that freeing up more Mercedes motors.

HWA have connections with a lot of sponsors who may fancy F1 and they have a way of testing young drivers and giving them a track program. Being on an F1 team young driver program with a DTM race program could be appealing to a young driver and the team know what they are learning and how they are developing. They will get experience of high tech cars and can be compared to established drivers

  • Steven Roy22/11/2009 at 23:42

Paul Henri Cahier mentioned that Canon lends some of their equipment to professional F1 photographers.

Now that is lens envy. Not just incredible equipment but incredibly free equipment

It will still be an independent team but he needs an engine so he may as well have the best. HWA do their own (Merc) engines in F3 so they may be planning an F1 engine of their own eventually
