I am slightly late with this daily post, as Mr C and myself were caught up playing the new Wii game. On the strength of Lukeh's review, we went out and bought it and then hijacked our inlaws for their console. Apologies for that. Elsewhere:

  • Lou has written up a post about her experience meeting Jenson Button at a book signing in London. It's a really great read, if only for the bit about Jenson describing F1 photography.
  • Whilst we are playing our game, we're also keeping an eye on the Children in Need telethon in the UK. Lewis Hamilton made a brief appearance, visiting a centre for disabled children, and playing some games with them. Button also popped up plugging the various ways you can donate. Good stuff!
  • There was a small amount of F1 news yesterday, as Williams took on a new shareholder. Joe has written about this and as ever, explained what it really means, so it is definitely recommended reading. It's been a quiet couple of days, though, just as we hoped for!

That's all for now. We are into the beautiful weekend now, so as ever, let us know what you're up to and I will see you in the comments.

anyone mention this while we were away?

...wonder if Susie Stoddart will get a test with Williams through the fact her boyfriend just brought a hunk of it?"

    #sidepodspace update

There are two astronauts already camping out in the ISS airlock in preparations for tytomorrow's spacewalk. The spacewalk is scheduled to start at 8:18am Eastern/1:18pm UK. Unless the weather intervenes and deprives me of the opportunity to go out and offer advice to a football referee I will probably miss it.

The main activity is to take a 7 ton cargo carrier (ELC) which is currenty dangling on the shuttle's robotic arm and transfer it to the main ISS arm then dock it to the station so that all the cargo inside it can be transferred.

I hope not because there are far more deserving drivers out there.

Baffles me how she remains in DTM. I know half the time she runs with previous years' Mercedes, but her racing career has been trundling though the foothills of averageness for sometime now.

  • Chris21/11/2009 at 00:37

Brilliant. I restarted career mode, blew Torro Rosso away with my driving at Monza, then in my first practice session in Australia I leave the pits, miss the corner completely and head straight ahead into the wall. Great start!

am behind on everything, so apologies if this has already been linked to:

Mark Webber stalls at the first two attempts. This is not a good sign. He holds 5,000 revs, drops the clutch, the sound is like a stuck drill... Finally the rear wheels spin and he's off.

6.30 is more than an hour earlier than I get up for work. Ugh

Then off to my 13 yr old sister's birthday party. Lots of kids that age running about, I will show my face for a couple of hours then disappear I think :-) Saw her on the b-day anyway..

Do you think we should hold an F1 2009 Wii championship, but actually all race at the same time? Set the clock in the FBFB to a countdown, then when it hits zero, we all start the race at the same time? Could work, just sayin'.

seems reasonable. not sure i could last a whole race though. i was 20th after 1 lap. 3 at a time was more than enough for me.

Is it possible to run manual gears? And how do you accelerate and brake?

You can tell I've never raced on a Wii. Like, ever.

  • Chris21/11/2009 at 01:17

Is it possible to run manual gears? And how do you accelerate and brake?

Yes, but it's near impossible! If you hold the wii remote sideways, Accelerate is 2 and brake is either 1 or b. Gears are up and down on the arrow pad. (KERS is the a button)

  • me21/11/2009 at 01:17

Is it possible to run manual gears? And how do you accelerate and brake?

yes. but the gear icon is too small and too far right to see it and the track at the same time.

    2 = accelerate

    1 = brake

    right = shift up

    left = shift down

  • Scott Woodwiss21/11/2009 at 01:17

Yes, but it's near impossible! If you hold the wii remote sideways, Accelerate is 2 and brake is either 1 or b. Gears are up and down on the arrow pad. (KERS is the a button)

Shame you had to queue so long

it was worth it though to get so close to the front. Eventually all the drunk idiots from the general admission further back tried to push their way to the front, and they were deliberately looking for groups of girls to get through as the path of least resistance, so I got a bit battered, but the fanclub is pretty good at looking out for each other so all the big guys were trying to protect us from them.

  • Steven Roy21/11/2009 at 02:50

haha they don't do it at all shows, it's an Eddie Vedder thing, he is obsessive about crowd safety after some people died at a Pearl Jam show in 2000. Between every song he pleads with the crowd to look out for their neighbours and make sure everyone is OK.

Too dark and too early for a Saturday !

Indeed. This is ghastly. Just been woken up by cat action: when yowling pitifully didn't work, she charged up the stairs and dive-bombed the bed.

"Just been woken up by cat action: when yowling pitifully didn't work, she charged up the stairs and dive-bombed the bed."

    Subtle....

Is her name Jordan?... after Eddie of course...

Now, I do have a funny EJ story, but it is utterly unprintable. Not here, not anywhere.

    Does it involve men's hairpieces?

    Does it involve men's hairpieces?

(I should point out that I'm referring to the fact some folk believe the 'loveable' Irish rogue has an array of toupees. I think he has enough problems in the wardrobe department, let alone worrying about what rug to wear on his head...)

  • Dank21/11/2009 at 10:44

I wonder if it has a name?

    Wiggy McWig?

But on a serious note, I've seen some daft hairpieces in my time, yet EJ's is fairly subtle if you ask me?

  • Stuart C21/11/2009 at 10:52

    Does it involve men's hairpieces?

It does not relate to rugs...

  • Stuart C21/11/2009 at 10:53

could you sum it up as a haiku?

For reasons of obscenity, no. I did do some Steve Soper haiku once:

    I wanted to go left

But the bl--dy thing wouldn't turn

    So I went right

was "button to buy robbie's house" story discussed yet?

The 18th century Compton Bassett House near Calne, about a two hour drive west of London, was bought by the singer less than a year ago for £8.5 million. He's hoping for a quick sale so he can head back to LA.

    http://www.metrof1.com/blogs/metrof1/2009/11/jenson-set-to-buy-robbie-williams-country-house.html

easily space for lou to hide out and not be noticed.

Talking of the Wii game, I've read some comments on YT on some videos of the game saying that it looks rubbish. My argument is - it's on the Wii. It was never going to be 360/PS3 standard, but it doesn't look that bad.

not sure it's worth it, i'd like to know if bernie will be doing anything to update his website before next season first.

  • me21/11/2009 at 14:48

Can we have a saturday thought?

"Grown men playing sim racing games isn't sad. Discuss"

it's more fun if grown women play too.

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 14:48

That was USD. This price now is GBD. Just the same, more or less.

Are we using Deutsch Marks in he UK now? ;)

also worth pointing out that the man who created the iphone app has now gone to work for force india.

i don't have a lot of faith that the app will see much work doing to it now.

Have you seen the announcement that Lopez is signed with USF1 pending him bringing in a tidy sum of $11m of which there is only a short fall of $2.2m. I seem to remember that USF1 saying it was no interested in what a driver bring in terms of cash just talent.

Which other "new" teams are likely to be following the same strategy for driver choice. Are we going to return to an era of pay drivers?

My views is that it is outrageous when there are some drivers with talent that never really had the full opportunity to show it in F1 (read Anthony Davidson) who could still be without a drive.

is not hulkenberg, but he's not bad. problem is that he never had the money/sponsors to run in a top GP2 team, and then he run out of money and had to came back to argentina 3 years ago. he used to be a little bit wild and inconsistent also, which didn't help to his reputation.

I never really never liked the idea of budget cuts feeling the sport and teams could self regulate and cannot really remember the time of the "pay" drivers. It just seemed that it was not a highlight time in F1 history and we could be entering a period where the best that could be said is there will be a lot of material for the F1Rejects website.

  • me21/11/2009 at 16:21

I never really never liked the idea of budget cuts feeling the sport and teams could self regulate and cannot really remember the time of the "pay" drivers.

wasn't that long ago. christine has watched pay drivers before.

maybe 3 or 4 years? justin wilson was a pay driver for example. he sold shares in himself.

  • lou21/11/2009 at 16:21

    looking back at comments...

was "button to buy robbie's house" story discussed yet?

he's buying a huge house in England?? wha?? why? surely he'd spend hardly any time in it! he already has a flat in london i think....

easily space for lou to hide out and not be noticed.

ahaha as if i'd ever survive being in the same place as Jenson for as long as that! :P

    "a room with a lou"

    hehe :)

You would hate to play against me. I was pinballing round Monaco something terrible.

if we continue this path we'll find that every single driver in F1 got there because of money, in some form or another (which is probably true...)

So there is such a continuum of drivers with financial backing. But is Lopez any good... the best I can find is the following

"On his day he was bloody fast though, and held the GP2 lap record at Circuit Paul Ricard for a good few years. Considering that the championship conducts about 75% of its testing at the track, the fact that his time stood for so long evidenced just how speedy he could be… when it all came together."

Steven always says fastest laps are totally meaningless - so he still looks like F1-reject material together with the team.

  • guille230621/11/2009 at 16:44

  • me21/11/2009 at 16:47

You think the PK family fortune did not help his career?

well he had the advantage of a name and money. yet still managed to squander both.

  • guille230621/11/2009 at 16:47

Steven always says fastest laps are totally meaningless

I agree. But if he can put together that speed and the consistency he has now after 2 years racing touring cars, he'll be fine

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 16:48

Nico has talent though, there is a differance. But loads of very talented drivers dont get into F1

Back to the question should Ant get a seat next year or does it simply go to the highest bidders?

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 16:49

Ant shouldnt get a seat next year, he is not good enough. End

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 16:49

I agree. But if he can put together that speed and the consistency he has now after 2 years racing touring cars, he'll be fine

What I saw in his record was not consistency.

  • guille230621/11/2009 at 16:49

Nico has talent though, there is a differance. But loads of very talented drivers dont get into F1

the fact is that to get into F1 you need to be not only at least a decent driver, but also to find the money to show yourself. the number of lewis hamilton career can be counted with the fingers of one hand.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 16:50

    Christian Klien?

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 16:51

    Christian Klien?

Depends, he was quicker than Ant overall, but he didnt put that pace in consistantly, if he did he is a very good driver.

  • Christine21/11/2009 at 16:53

    hehe, love the title: http://willthe...igns-j-lo-apparently/

Just got round to reading that link:

Renault however really have marked themselves out for not maximising the talent they had at their disposal through the RDD. They threw away Montagny and haven’t won a championship since dumping him as their development driver.

    ♥ Will.

  • guille230621/11/2009 at 16:53

What I saw in his record was not consistency.

not in his european record (actually he either was near the front or he crashed...). I'm talking of what he did after he came back to argentina. In 2008 and 2009 he has won two consecutive championships on the local equivalent of BTCC, and is running to win the other two main touring car championships this year

  • Scott Woodwiss21/11/2009 at 16:53

Renault however really have marked themselves out for not maximising the talent they had at their disposal through the RDD. They threw away Montagny and haven’t won a championship since dumping him as their development driver.

So logic dictates if they do take him back...

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 16:54

Did Franck win Le Mans last year?

  • guille230621/11/2009 at 16:55

Back to the question should Ant get a seat next year or does it simply go to the highest bidders?

thing is, why somebody like anthony can't find 12m in sponsorship if a guy from south-america, were the exposure in F1 count less, can?

  • Scott Woodwiss21/11/2009 at 16:55

Did Franck win Le Mans last year?

Nope. Was 2nd this year though, with a broken foot.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 16:57

Renault however really have marked themselves out for not maximising the talent they had at their disposal through the RDD. They threw away Montagny and haven’t won a championship since dumping him as their development driver.

I read that bit and immediately wonder what sort of returns Red Bulll has had.

After what you said in the podcast on the Mercedes Day I felt so sorry for Kovy - again it seems talent was somehow crushed rather early on - do you think he could rebound if he went to a new team? Should Mercedes actually consider him for the second seat rather than Robert (I do not like people who complain in open and after winning one race feel they should get the number 1 status - just my preference).

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 16:57

I have seen Lopez in GP2, nothing special, but is accident prone, so no-1 can use the Kobayashi excuse.

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 16:59

Should Mercedes actually consider him for the second seat rather than Robert

I personally think its either Kimi or Nick. My money is on Kimi though, the better driver.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 16:59

thing is, why somebody like anthony can't find 12m in sponsorship if a guy from south-america, were the exposure in F1 count less, can?

A 19 year Spaniard was bringing in rather more sponsorship on a per race basis. Did he contribute to the sport? In my humble opinion NO!

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:00

I think Lewis did actually have the benefit of Ron's money from quite an early stage...

I do recall an article in the Times interviewing a youngster who competed against and beat Lewis when they competed together.... they both got invited to see Ron at one point.... this other guy was a not very attractive white guy, very scrawny with ginger hair.... definitely minus marketing material....

He had to drop out of racing as he had zero money but it was an interesting article... you had to feel sorry for him....

Please don't think I am criticising Lewis or saying he's not good... I am just saying he had other attributes as well as talent.... and that can really help a career.... and win friends..... and that there are a lot of guys who never get his opportunities...

PS The little ginger guy wasn't Ant.... but you have to admit that despite the fact that he's talented and articulate he's not a sponsor magnet either....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:03

I personally think its either Kimi or Nick. My money is on Kimi though, the better driver.

Mercedes have/will contact Kimi - even if you are not a Kimi fan (I am not really since like Joe I have observed that he was blown away by his team mate these last two seasons) but the marketing that Kimi would bring is huge. The decision will be Kimi's to accept, its can Mercedes make an offer attractive enough.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:04

On the subject of Bob Kubes to Mercedes... if I were Ross Brawn I would be very worried that he was really really not good early season in a less than good car....

The only thing he has going over Nick is that he isn't German... and if Merc are looking for an "International" pairing that could help Bob....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:06

PS The little ginger guy wasn't Ant.... but you have to admit that despite the fact that he's talented and articulate he's not a sponsor magnet either....

I seem to always pick them, Nick, Ant, Kaz (on appeal not driving skill) - sure Timo has some sponsor magnet appeal?

  • me21/11/2009 at 17:08

Should Mercedes actually consider him for the second seat rather than Robert

he looks bad racing against lewis. as would almost anyone.

    he'll be fine anywhere else.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:08

It's clear Ross was on hols and had to interrupt it because the lovely Jense went peering over the garden fence and thought that he perceived greener grass.... so the Merc deal had to be announced early...

I have a feeling Ross will not look at the driver thing until he returns.....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:09

The only thing he has going over Nick is that he isn't German... and if Merc are looking for an "International" pairing that could help Bob....

In all honesty - I think it is the last thing Mercedes Marketing wants is an all German team - the only way to sell that is to the factory floor and to all the workers who are being short-shifted.

  • me21/11/2009 at 17:10

It's clear Ross was on hols and had to interrupt it because the lovely Jense went peering over the garden fence and thought that he perceived greener grass.... so the Merc deal had to be announced early...

that's not true at all is it?

in fact the merc deal was announced later than we were all expecting, no?

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:12

in fact the merc deal was announced later than we were all expecting, no?

I think Macca were kicking up a fight - look what they have lost? Mercedes want back its 40% share and Macca has to spin off a new company for its road car!

  • Amy21/11/2009 at 17:12

that's been in negotiation for at least 6 months, probably more.

if anything it must've been mercedes annoyed at not being able to capitalise on brawn's early season success.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:14

    he'll be fine anywhere else.

Amy I am joining you with now being a Heikki fan - oh and he and I have the same music tastes.

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 17:15

It all seems to have gone quiet on the "who goes to mercedes" thing. So I wonder what is going on?

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:15

Kovy will not be on Mercedes short list....

And that's good for him as he needs to be somewhere that look to him for safe and steady development rather than front running bravado....

If he finds that he may well be rehabilitated and come back stronger and better.... and suitable for a top drive...

It's ironic that Martin made so much of Macca really helping Heikki with all their sophistication... but actually all they did was break his spirit....

Peeps now forget that he did brilliantly well in the second half of his Renault season despite being up against Fisi who knew the team and Flav who was horrid.... that's what got him the Macca drive....

It's funny but he had a number of serious crashes... many more than Lewis... and usually not his fault... I wonder if they played a part....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:15

if anything it must've been mercedes annoyed at not being able to capitalise on brawn's early season success.

That must have cost millions in marketing potential- I think they were p... off about not being able to sell their engines to Red Bull.

I think they will keep rumours going that MS or Kimi will join will not join negotiation is on, negotiation is broken off. Jenson left and I think he knows more than we know, it was not the money, and Jenson would not be fooled by the Macca glitz. He also knows Lewis will be tough to beat. If I were Kimi and I actually do want to drive in F1 next year I would be visiting Jenson to say Hello?

there was definitely something strange in all this. but I don't think Brawn's speed next year is part of it, they switched development in the middle of the year the new car, they should be pretty advanced by now.

there was definitely something strange in all this. but I don't think Brawn's speed next year is part of it, they switched development in the middle of the year the new car, they should be pretty advanced by now.

A lot of people have questioned whether this is not some sort of Bravado on Brawn's part. They were still introducing various new bits and were running out of money as they had no significant sponsors (eventually resorting to a sponsor for this race series). Where would they get the money to do both developments. In all honesty Rubens was not that much off the pace at the end than he was a quarter way into the season.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:30

    Here is the Independent article...

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/motor-racing/a-final-twist-in-the-road-for-brawn-1824841.html

Interestingly Ross flew off before the Button deal with Macca was announced... I guess he didn't think further action was required....

  • Kimster/Samy21/11/2009 at 17:32

Because the decision wasnt in his hands. When Kimis manager went to Mclaren, Mercedes where there too. I think a decision was made then and there.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:32

He rightly says that the Merc seat is the only real game in town....

I think we agree there - but I think it will only be the fourth best team not the best - will that be good enough for Kimi coming off being second rate to Felipe for 1.5 seasons?

  • Amy21/11/2009 at 17:32

he has way too many houses.. Monaco, London, Bahrain and now Morocco... so unfair... lol

It did some where around 150 million and they were running out towards the end.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:34

"Where would they get the money to do both developments."

Ross is no fool and wouldn't want to be a one hit wonder....

If they didn't have good plans for 2010 he'd have ducked out of team principal for next year....

I think he was canny enough to keep some budget on one side, and cool enough to gambol that their clear superiority early on would see them through, especially as he could see Macca and to a lesser extent Ferrari helping him out....

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:38

"will that be good enough for Kimi coming off being second rate to Felipe for 1.5 seasons"

Rich I will ignore that as Kimi was disadvantaged in an understeery car and did brilliantly.... Ross would know better than to waste the most talented guy on the grid... and that is why Macca wanted him....

But I will say no more as you know my views.....

  • me21/11/2009 at 17:38

It's clear Ross was on hols and had to interrupt it because the lovely Jense went peering over the garden fence and thought that he perceived greener grass.... so the Merc deal had to be announced early...

am i misreading the article in the independent? it reads as if the mercedes deal was announced and then brawn went off on holiday? where does it say anything was brought forward, or holidays interrupted?

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:38

I think he was canny enough to keep some budget on one side, and cool enough to gambol that their clear superiority early on would see them through, especially as he could see Macca and to a lesser extent Ferrari helping him out....

I am not saying there was no development - but can it compete with the likes of Red Bull with DeSeb, Macca with Lewis/Button and Ferrari with its new boy Alonso? All teams way better funded and with apparently stronger drivers (Button might be the exception but the rest...)

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:43

"am i misreading the article in the independent? it reads as if the mercedes deal was announced and then brawn went off on holiday? where does it say anything was brought forward, or holidays interrupted?"

I read the brought forward and hols delay somewhere else...

Hmmmm.... I shall think where and let you know....

Anyway I think the driver thing won't be decided until Ross's return....

And Merc would not have planned a major announcement the day before Ross flew off if they could help it.... for no other reason than, in management terms, for the key guy to not be on site when the staff must be looking for reassurance and information is not well planned...

And Ross is too astute at man management not to know that....

  • me21/11/2009 at 17:44

Anyway I think the driver thing won't be decided until Ross's return....

    completely agree.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 17:47

    "All teams way better funded"

Than Mercedes?.... I think not... and Ross would have known about the deal for some time...

"but can it compete with the likes of Red Bull with DeSeb, Macca with Lewis/Button and Ferrari with its new boy Alonso"

I think they feel that they coped this year with a less than stellar line-up (Sorry Lou) and we don't know who will be in the open seat yet....

It could be that the main competition will be Red Bull....

Macca have to do a lot of down sizing which will be hard... and it isn't clear that Ferrari really have got good engineering direction at present... Ross would know more about the current Ferrari capabilities than most and may not be worried....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:53

Rich I will ignore that as Kimi was disadvantaged in an understeery car and did brilliantly.... Ross would know better than to waste the most talented guy on the grid... and that is why Macca wanted him....

Joe agrees with me about Kimi - the understeery thing is an excuse. The two most talented drivers on the grid are Lewis and Alonso and the team principals have now added Vettel to that list. Kimi's insistence on driving in only the best car is something of an admission that his recent lack of sparkle has harmed his CV. Were he to take the Mercedes and it is only the fourth best he would end up in no better situation than he was in this season with the F60. Finally Brawn would have designed a car with Jenson in mind - so it will be "understeery" to neutral not an oversteery car like Kimi likes! There is reason to believe that a car set up with as neutral as possible will be the best to cope going from supremely heavy to supremely light on fuel.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 17:56

    "All teams way better funded"

During this season while the 2010 car is being developed yes Brawn would be at a comparative disadvantage.

Right found the references re Merc being "jumped" into their announcement here....

    http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/11/button-and-brawn-now-its-getting-bitter/

And if you asked me if I'd be quoting JA last year I would have laughed, but his blog is pretty good.... just stay away from the TV please James....

    The key bit is...

"The announcement of that [the Merc buyout] – via a hastily arranged conference call with German and British media on Monday morning – suggests that Brawn and Mercedes felt the Button defection was imminent and wanted to get their positive news in first. "

This should not have been hastily arranged if they really wanted to announce the news on Monday.... it would have been better orchestrated....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:11

I don't agree with Joe or you....

When evoking the understeery thing - I could say that was why Nick was disadvantaged in the BMW Sauber 08 car compared to Robert. Still the record book shows Robert beat Nick in 2008, now move one year on...

One reason why Nick could be good at the Brawn Mercedes is that he has a similar style to Jenson smooth and easy on the tyres - there is reason to believe that a more neutral car might be better when going from a heavy to a light fuel load. Again having to qualify light and start heavy is going to produce some interesting strategies.

  • me21/11/2009 at 18:12

however.. Jenson has said that nothing was confirmed until tuesday evening... he himself didn't know he'd be leaving Brawn, not properly.. so how on earth could Brawn/mercedes have known? It was obviously a shock to Brawn/mercedes and it was, from what i've gathered in interviews, announced literally only hours after the contract had been signed...

I agree with you - Jenson' "defection" certainly sprung the Mercedes planning operations into play.

I think Brawn/Fry have to take some of the blame - we certainly got the impression there was not the money to pay Jenson -then all of a sudden Jenson goes to another team offering up to 50% less than was on the table (then got withdrawn).

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:18

It was obviously a shock to Brawn/mercedes and it was, from what i've gathered in interviews, announced literally only hours after the contract had been signed...

They went on an instinct that once Jenson visited Macca they had lost their "family silverware" - hence Brawn saying Jenson was out of contract for having visited Macca head quarters.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 18:21

"however.. Jenson has said that nothing was confirmed until tuesday evening... he himself didn't know he'd be leaving Brawn, not properly.. so how on earth could Brawn/mercedes have known? I think Ross knew that would be the result on Friday evening when this happened....

"After Button visited McLaren and made it public, with quotes from his manager Richard Goddard about Button wanting to be ‘”valued”, Ross Brawn made his feelings clear to Button in a phone call on Sunday. He withdrew the offer on the grounds of breach of contract, he told Bob McKenzie in the Express. “I was very disappointed at the way things finished up with Jenson,” said Brawn."

Withdrawing the offer left Jense with nowhere to go but Macca.... Ross knew and would have tee'd up Merc before he did that with Jense... hence the hasty Press release on Monday....

And we'll never know if Jense really wanted to stay as he lost that opportunity when Macca used him to showboat....

It's clear that the higher offer was on the table before Jense went to Woking and I can only assume that the "Not being valued" stuff and the public visit were Goddard's misguided way of getting the fee up even higher...

It would have been fine for Goddard to go alone, and quietly... like the Robertsons had earlier in the week.... as Macca couldn't have done the public Alan Henry article in that case....

Could be that Jense was, once again, badly advised....

    We'll see next year....

  • me21/11/2009 at 18:26

    Good evening all :)

    how be tricks?

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 18:27

Could be that Jense was, once again, badly advised....

Personally, I think McLaren will be quite strong next year and Jenson seems to feel the same

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:27

Withdrawing the offer left Jense with nowhere to go but Macca.... Ross knew and would have tee'd up Merc before he did that with Jense... hence the hasty Press release on Monday....

We agree here. I wondered what would have happened if Macca had not decided to go with Jenson and turn around and said we will take the hairy one and give it a shave! Jenson would have been in a pickle.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:29

Personally, I think McLaren will be quite strong next year and Jenson seems to feel the same

Macca is going to be awesome next year their main worry is Red Bull not Mercedes nor even Ferrari.

  • Lukeh21/11/2009 at 18:29

    how be tricks?

Not too bad, bit of s tressful day though. Spent some time thinking how to outperform Bourdais in F1 2009. That said, that spend all 17 seconds worth of thinking.

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 18:29

I wouldn't discount Ferrari too soon

  • lou21/11/2009 at 18:29

although.. he did say that history suggests that Mclaren will build a good car, he also said he didn't know anything about the car they have/are building for next year...

  • Christine21/11/2009 at 18:32

I thought you were no longer a fan?

I'm not. But I have also seen Badoer drive.

I'm not. But I have also seen Badoer drive.

    This is a good point

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:32

I wouldn't discount Ferrari too soon

It will be third best - but Ferrari is only successful went it can throw resources at a project - the FOTA agreements would have harmed the way Ferrari operate (and I think drove out Toyota who simply did not know how to operate with the required lower numbers of staff the factory closures etc)

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 18:33

Afternoon. I'm cold but happy to see some non-league football.

    Hullo RG

  • Lukeh21/11/2009 at 18:33

I'm not. But I have also seen Badoer drive.

*wonders what the game would be like with badoer*

Maybe that's why it doesn't have Instant replays, as Badoer Time defies slow mo replays.

  • Lady Snowcat21/11/2009 at 18:34

"Macca is going to be awesome next year"

I wouldn't discount them but I also believe the commentators who say that the need to downsize staff levels will hurt Macca, who have yet to start the process, and affect them more than Mercedes who are already at the correct levels...

Much pain still to occur at Macca....

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 18:38

I wouldn't discount them but I also believe the commentators who say that the need to downsize staff levels will hurt Macca, who have yet to start the process, and affect them more than Mercedes who are already at the correct levels...

When does this come into play - as I understand it the 2010 car should alredy be designed and the tooling and fabrication should betaking place? In Honda's case the huge staffing was used in the design and wind tunnel testing.

Part of me still thinks it will be funny if a commentator seeing the Mercedes doing well and referring to the HONDA DNA pedigree.

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 18:59

    Evening

    Hey Mr Bunny

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 19:03

What about the Tyrrell DNA? :)

The funny bit is because it is HONDA DNA that Mercedes is inheriting or buying viz few people would think Hondas to be better than Mercs - the whole Silver Arrow thing was hugely nationalistic at the time.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 19:12

Here is a video on the Silver Arrows - problem is they are not Mercedes....

    A Vaio with windows 7

If you have to buy a Windows machine, a Sony isn't a bad choice

Not cheap though, could've gone Mac for that money

This was suprisingly cheap, was on a par with the Acer and HP which only had vista, i was quite suprised.

I had a budget, macs didnt even come close to it!

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 20:27

On a Saturday in the run up to Christmas I am not surprised in the slightest. A Personal Shop is the way to beat the crowds - book ahead and then there's someone waiting to talk to you when you arrive.

They're fast. Very fast. The Quad core machines especially.

    And they're shiny.

  • Nick in Dubai21/11/2009 at 20:33

    Next time, asking will help

nooo... i like to shop without help.

secondly, i cant believe they didnt have it plugged into a monitor. I have no idea what the logic behind that is...

have been to the regent street store, the one in Bluewater and one in Cambridge..the bluewater store is my favourite as it's a little smaller... and it's closer..

On the whole, it might be a good idea if I managed to finish a GP3 season before getting a copy of F1 2009. There will almost certainly be a PC version out by then, and it will probably have been replaced by F1 2012...

Why? You can't stand underneath as it's blocked off and the glass is frosted.

I think most stores do have them attached to a monitor

The others have customers who ask questions

  • Scott Woodwiss21/11/2009 at 20:38

As of now, I am now a team driver for Galaxy Racing on TORA. Didn't think I'd get into a team that quickly! :P

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 20:38

But whats the point in doing that? plug the mac mini into a monitor with a keyboard and mouse and i can do it myself!

The point of it is that you book the appointment and then when you arrive say "I'd like to buy a Mac Mini please." Then you leave with the Mac Mini. YOu could be in and out in less than 10 minutes if you're lucky, with no need to queue.

  • Nick in Dubai21/11/2009 at 20:38

If i wanted to ask lots of questions i would be shopping for a linux machine!

  • Bassano Clapper21/11/2009 at 20:39

I worked there for several months.

  • me21/11/2009 at 20:40

unless i'm missing something... all macs are the same. have a play with an imac, it's the same experience.

the only thing you can't check it what it looks like on your monitor. but that would be a mental thing to expect anyhow.

Indeed it is. Although in store the Mini is connected to the sublime 24" LED display (a snip at £635), it will work just fine with a suitable monitor/keyboard/mouse.

The desktop was for personal use, the laptop is the companies

What if I don't want to go to Manchester for that experience?

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 20:43

It's about the same as the White Macbook, the Mini is basically a Macbook with the logic board cut in half and stacked up. The new ones will take 8GB RAM as well.

you mean you missed Basic, ProDOS and Mac OS 1 through 9?????

I still miss the simplicity of pre OS X days, but we made the right move bringing Stevie J back into the fold, and I can't believe I still hear "macs can't right click" when we've been able to for over 15 years (not that you need to as much on a mac - drag & drop baby!)

All my iMacs are Intels. I am afraid the next lap it will be Shuttles -no sure which flavour of Linux but it will have KDE 4.3 desktops. Just downloaded Fedora 12 KDE so will be playing with it tomorrow.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 22:24

The new lab has been designed around using SFF boxes with dual high resolution monitors.

Of course what I would like are the 27in iMacs!

hey Steven. Have you had a nice day?

  • Alison21/11/2009 at 22:30

Hmmm I'm not enjoying the apple love. I was taken to the shop in London and was NOT impressed. It was horrible. That has put my off for life.

Generally they are nice - but in our part of the world a bit too expensive to justify. I use Linux personally but Mac's OS is for sure the best you get when it comes to stability.

  • Alison21/11/2009 at 22:33

    do tell why

I don't get what's to like. It's just a shop? I was expecting awesomness after how much you all bigged it up. But no. Just a shop.

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 22:33

Hmmm I'm not enjoying the apple love. I was taken to the shop in London and was NOT impressed. It was horrible. That has put my off for life.

It's always very busy there. As I mentioned before, book a Personal Shop and you'll have a much better experience.

Oh, and why is the glass staircase sexist?

If you think being late for a football match againt your local rivals to find the manager has chosen a team everyone disagreed with and getting beaten 4-0 and having two players sent off for assault is a good day then I have had an awesome day.

You shouldn't be able to see up a skirt/dress as the glass is frosted. Or was it one of those mini skirts that can also be described as "a belt"? ;)

  • Steven Roy21/11/2009 at 22:40

It was a fairly short skirt. Not indecent. I definitely saw right up it. The glass of the steps is frosted, if you're standing behind the steps, it isn't.

Ah I was made to walk the whole length of Regents street so I could wander round a shop for 10 minutes looking for something he refused to ask about. Once we found it, he took one look at what seemed to me to be a plain box, put it back and had miraculously decided he didn't want it......

I hope so to but we now have the slight problem that the two best central defenders have managed to get themselves three game suspensions as a result of their sendings offs so the next few weeks may be problematic.

    The MacDonalds of the IT world {Comment #752}

Well... ...I'd expected possibly-unhelpful staff, strangely positioned products and inconsistent pricing. Surprisingly, only the last of these proved the case - half the software had no prices and the other half had illogical pricing structures. As in, last year's Norton Internet Security was over twice the price of this year's despite being an inferior product (and the same price as Norton 360 3.0, which includes this year's Norton Internet Security as part of a bigger package).

However, I'd expected there to be someone on the till, even if were literally asleep or engrossed in texting a friend. To have nobody on the till whatsoever defeats the point of it being a store and is an invitation to make a big huge fuss by walking off with the item you intended to buy, or else lobbing it at the corner helpdesk where most of them were hidden.

The strange thing is Norton Internet Security ended up solving the problems Dad was having with a very unreliable computer that a rival manufacturer's product had failed to fix. It's taken a hitherto-unknown virus off my computer, but Firefox has also crashed five times since I installed it...

Possibly its building that is putting a shadow on the landscape that would shame Mordor!

jenson's up more properties than the queen. we think he's been paid in advance.

Why would anyone pay him in advance?

  • lou21/11/2009 at 23:40

Why would anyone pay him in advance?

on the topic of money and Jenson... he said in an interview that he is getting paid less at Mclaren than he would have done at Brawn... this confused me..

  • me21/11/2009 at 23:40

    was joking, ignore me.

Brawn offer 8million plus up to 4 million in bonus points for two years. Macca offered 6 million for three years.

I saw that as well. Very odd. I guess he is not so keen on Mercedes

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 23:43

Clarify each year was 8 million plus bonus up to 4million.

  • Steven Roy21/11/2009 at 23:44

Kubica to Mercedes? This is getting really silly now

he clearly saw the light and wanted to drive for the best team.

he keeps saying he wanted the challenge... which is fair enough i suppose.. 7 years is a long time to stay in one place :(

Yes and there is a reason - the 2009 car was constructed with the aid of 150+ million - 2010 was designed on a budget of about 1/5 of that.

Do yuy want an guest post on this topic - I have been collecting the figures which do not make much sense if you use the word budget.

    cannot be inferior to McAfee

I used to use AVG, it worked and was free

It has to be more than that - he genuinely wants to defend his title and it is clear he feels he is in with a better chance to compete against Lewis using the same equipment.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 23:48

I use it but we are not supposed to at work for the Windows PCs

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 23:48

It still is and highly recommended.

honestly, viruses? Do people still get them?

really? i think he's just throwing himself a new challenge.. because from the sounds of things he has no idea about the Mclaren car or anything, yet knows Mercedes/ Brawn (i shall continue to call them Brawn for as long as i can..) should have a strong car too.

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 23:50

    Do you not use Macs?

We still have a PC laptop, soon to be replaced with a Macbook (but shhh, don't tell LPG)

  • Andy Taylor21/11/2009 at 23:50

Oh and thanks Mr and Mrs C for the Movember donation, really appreciated.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 23:51

I heard something about if you use Windows you might get viruses, it may be rumour though.

Sensible man - I do love my Linux-based MSI wind netbooks - price here was really cheap.

  • Rich21/11/2009 at 23:55

I am still intrigued why Mercedes would want to occupy (have built?) a building that looks like a Darlek - sory I just cannot get that building out of thoughts - its weird. Then to put on top of the poor Darlek their logo twirling around - that just bizarre.

Might? Have you seen the articles about putting unprotected Windows machines on t'internet?

Really, but I do not know what this protection is, I just did an install of Fedora 12 - took 15 mins and everything is there working with Open Office, a Browser, PDF readers, unzipping functions and its absolutely secure.

  • Paul22/11/2009 at 00:04

the ones about windows xp? From 2004?

Lest just say I wouldn't put mysql, php, or apache on the Internet without patching either

  • Rich22/11/2009 at 00:04

I have a complete phobia of Windows machines now - should I wear latex gloves when using them - is that the protection you were rumoured to have heard to protect yourself from their viruses?

  • Rich22/11/2009 at 00:09

Lest just say I wouldn't put mysql, php, or apache on the Internet without patching either

Sure I just keep everything updated - actually that was my issue with McAfee and Windows automatic updates they got into a dispute and broke one of labs all 30 PCs - Window update deleted the original files then McAfee prevent the install of the updates - brilliant thinking guys.
