Morning everyone! For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere, did you sleep well last night? Because it was the longest day of the year. Also, according to James Allen, it was Fangio’s birthday yesterday, but it seems as though he is a little confused!
Speaking of really long waits, it’s always a bit weird on the Tuesday before the Grand Prix, as the teams are in transit so there’s not much news. Pirelli are bringing their medium tyres this weekend, but they have been apparently made more durable. Does that make them Extra Medium then?
Cue the FIA to make some for us then: they’re fiddling with the engine mapping rules in order to stifle Red Bull’s qualifying advantage. But other teams like Renault say it will affect them too. Have you seen the latest issue of Renault’s sponsor magazine? Sniff Petrol reckons it’s one for the ladies… Also, Sniff’s poking fun at Lewis Hamilton, much deserved really!
Apparently things in Austin are going really well – but it’s super hot there. Perhaps Red Bull will be able to refresh the fans, Joe thinks… Joe’s also been writing about the 2013 engine rules, some advanced materials and taming prancing horses…
WTF1 has been scouring the net looking for the funniest F1 things and has made a post of the best F1 drifts – quite entertaining. Speaking of which, the world record for the longest drift has just been broken at Mercedes-Benz World. He’s beaten Vaughn Gittin Jnr, which pleases me a lot because he’s the annoying voiceover guy in Need For Speed Shift 2 Unleashed Which Is A Racing Game If You Didn’t Realise From This Ridiculously Long Title…
There has been plenty to listen to and read on Sidepodcast too – there’s an Aside with Joe and a Debrief, plus Tweets of the Week, Christine’s Driver and Team Rankings, a discussion on what makes a vintage season, and even Wimbledon posts. So plenty to catch up on, if you haven’t already.
Finally I shall leave you with the latest part in the Everything is a Remix series. This is the third part in a series that will blow your mind. Who knew that so many of our favourite things drew heavy inspiration from others?
So that’s all from me. Congrats again to Alex and Kat, who have a lovely baby daughter born on Father’s Day. Great story about her name too!
I may not be in the comments this morning as I have an important appointment to keep … but more on that later ;) Have a great day and see you later!
good morning new daily.
Also, according to James Allen, it was Fangio’s birthday yesterday, but it seems as though he is a little confused!
am so confused by that twitter conversation. james just... sort of stopped discussing it.
if steven's around... nokia made a good product: http://swipe.nokia.com/
*faints*
Had to happen one day. Very convenient timing
indeed. the video in the corner is worth a watch. i almost want one.
You want a mobile phone?
erm... well... nah. i like that it has no buttons at all though.
I thought Apple would get there first
will see what their next model looks like, was surprised the swipe is as good as it is.
I saw some leaks on the new iphone recently but it looked similar to the current one.
i missed a new version of firefox coming out. version 5 can be downloaded here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/
Hello daily. For me it was the shortest day which means hooooray, i can start thinking that it won't be too dark to run in the evenings soon :)
Seems no time since version 4
Why would anyone live upside down and back to front?
new approach after v4 took forever to come out. think it's working.
good post on the future of TWIT: http://gigaom.com/video/this-week-in-tech-new-studio/
and that's me for the night.
Goodnight
why wouldn't you?

That's what happens with technology
that is true. I don't normally own the 'flagship' model of phone though so this is a first for me :)
Hello everyone and congrats to Alex and Kat.
I will pass on digging at James Allen and say I am really enjoying Gerald Donaldson's biography of Fangio. After reading about the cross continental races (3,000 mile across the rivers, plains and over the Andes) that he won in South America during the 30's and 40's, I am convinced even more that he is the GOAT. Going to trying and visit the museum while I am down in Argentina in August.
On more recent events, I think Red Bull dumping NASCAR might indicate that they might dump Toro Rosso in my eyes. Just a hunch.
Some of those races were incredible. I have read about a few of them.
GOAT? Not sure about that
I know, subjective term. It's me own opinion. It's probably because I love that post WW2 era so much.
You have to wonder how many championships he would have won if the championship had been around 15 years earlier
It's funny, I thought about this a few years back for blog post I never finished. Fango came too late, Chapman couldn't build cars that could last for Clark, Stewart missed a bunch of races through injury and retired early. Moss and Lauda missed their primes through injuries / airlines start-up. Gilles Villeneuve, Asacari, Rindt, and Senna died too early.
Then it dawned on me. Out of all the group that is mentioned in that top tier by the public, Schumacher is really the only one who was completely healthy AND in the best team for the who length of his prime. The only thing that happened to him was the broken leg in 99' from Sliverstone.I don't know if that makes him the LOAT (luckiest of all time) or just the product of that 1994 era.
Another thought, how many championships would Wimille and Asacari would of taken off of him if they lived? Better yet how many would José Froilán González have if he lost 90 - 120 pounds?
Add in Ascari dying a couple of years after his second consecutive accident, Rindt winning his championship posthumously, Villeneuve not making his F1 debut till he was in his late 20s because he didn't have the money to race in Europe, etc
Prost is probably the only other who made the distance but unlike Schumacher he was prepared to have a competitive team mate and that cost him another 3 championships at least
Never thought of Wimille as champion material.
Out of all the racing drivers of that era, he is the one who always has the greatest amount of variance in terms how good he really was. I watched an old Shell motor racing film from the 1960's that made him out to be good.
He died in 1949. He is one of the drivers in Joe's book - THe Grand Prix Saboteurs
Finished reading that a while back. How that hasn't been made into a movie staring George Cooney is beyond me.
There is supposed to be a movie in the works
F1 movies are like buses. It takes ages to get one, but they all come in bunches.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/06/senna-formula-1-rush-ayrton-hunt-lauda-howard.html
TWO movies are being planned on the topic of James Hunt. One (being produced by Steven Spielberg) focuses on his life, while another (possibly to be directed by Ron Howard) focuses on his rivalry with Niki Lauda.
Would be nice if it... well.. ANY of Joe's books were available on the Kindle.
indeed, I've still not read either because I'm not buying paper, I refuse to!

morning all
mail him or comment on his blog.
he has in-design (for creating gp+), so he has the tools. keep tweeting and emailing and he'll get around to it.
Mr Webber is loosing his cool :-)
http://twitter.com/#!/AussieGrit/statuses/83463029890613249
Hahaa... imagine getting kicked off a racing game by Webber - what a brilliant claim to fame
:D
I have a few times, I notice each time he mentions his book even more people do the same. He hasn't seemed very positive so far :(
boo :(
It should not be too difficult. There are few photos in the books they may need to have some rights sorted out for e-publishing (or not?) but otherwise it is just text text that should not be that difficult to convert from the original text editor format that probably still exists into a e-book form ...
saying that I prefer the real books :-)
meh.
;)
by the way, do we already know if there is any connection between that Mr Saward that appears in the Crippen book and Mr Saward who wrote the book ?
read the book. #nospoilers
I did, that's why I am asking
oh. did it not mention it in the final third of the book?
looks like #mustreadagainandookforanswers :-)
hehehehehe. wikipedia, might help you out too.
I may have overlooked the connection between the author and the character
I am a little mad at Amazon at the moment, my friends wants to borrow the book I'm reading at the moment, which we could do if we lived in the USA. Grrrrrrr.
i can't repeat the line without ruining it, but i'm pretty sure it's in there.
can you only lend in the US then? haven't tried.
and now all is clear ! :-) I knew I was onto something
at the moment, yes :(
Is it really nerdy of me to read http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/2012-olympics/ even though I don't know what it all means?
I just want to know if the site is going to crash on Friday :( I think signs point to yes.
here's what you need to know... they built it using microsoft technology.
oooooooops.
is it too much to ask that every other Australian be otherwise engaged at noon? Shouldn't these people be working or something? :D
Yeah they're doing cool things like linking up with libraries too. Hopefully they start doing that over here soon.
at least you can buy a kindle here. i want to play with the nook, but it's US only. can't buy it, or ebooks for it outside the US.
it's cute! - http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp
the original one i understand, the colour one I don't. The main reason I love my Kindle is the e-ink screen :)
I have a NookColor. Under it's wrapping, it's a 7" Android tablet. If you root it you can install android apps.
don't like these mediocre typhoon days ... storm not good enough for typhoon day off but still bringing miserable weather ...
yikes, that's the last thing i'd want to do. how is it for reading?
sorry, yeah this one: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp?PID=35699&cds2Pid=35700#productimg
ahh precious e-ink. I don't think I'd cope with a wi-fi only reader. I buy far too many books in airports, plus half of my usage is twittering for free when I'm out and about :)
do you subscribe to reading blogs on it?
one of the new guys at my work has the new kindle, its the first time i've seen one up close. it scared me. I am such a creature of habit :)
Not bad. It's tough to read outside, not an e-ink screen. It's a comfortable size and form factor. Not as large and awkward as an iPad, but larger and easier to read on than the smaller devices.
Overall, some pros, some cons.
They're niiiice :)
I have google reader's Android app installed for blog reading. The unlocking of android apps is why I like it though.
I don't via Amazon because they're not available in Australia. I did used to subscribe to a couple via Calibre but I wasn't updating it enough to make that worthwhile. I've read Sidepodcast on the browser many times :)
jaysus amazon!
I hear they attract wolverines late at night
they hate us!

Trulli is super extra bonus grumpy today
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92509
I think he has been sacked for karun next year. Wonder if he will last the season
James allen has a new website covered in Ferrari.
I wont link to it in case you all get sick
Karun and Heikki would be the super awesomest friendliest team ever
I think he'll last the season, but I think he'll miss either India or Korea
"After a 2010 of settling in, I was expecting to be fighting in the middle of the pack.."
didn't we all, jarno.
If he keeps complaining to the team and getting beaten i wonder if he will make it that far
Eli is annoyed me thinks
Indeed.
Afternoon folks.
Saw the Senna film last night, am I the only person in the world who thought it wasn't as good as I was expecting?
Alas, this made me laugh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaOVNqA7lBA
:)
Nah, Dank Ross wasn't too thrilled with it either. I enjoyed it though
:)
Scarbs didn't like it.
Thanks Amy, i'll ask mum if she wants any tickets too. will tweet you/dm you when she's back in if you're not in the comments/asleep :)
What did he say about it?
I promise nothing because there may not even be any and if there are, I may not be able to get 4 :)
hehe no prob :) i appreciate you trying tho!

Can't say I think it's better than the old version.
Thanks, that's awesome that you found that. I think Dank's reasons for dislike were similar. Dan_Thorn on Twitter thought it was a glorified YouTube clip. Why didn't you like it, 4Chords?
I am going to see it on the 29th...
Joe looks at Valencia
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/06/22/meanwhile-in-valencia/
Well I did enjoy it, it had its really good points, like on-board footage in full surround sound and TV cameras at the drivers briefings, but I felt it could have been so much more than just a regurgitation of the facts.
Maybe it's because I knew 95% of the details of the film from reading about the subject in different books before and that I prefer to see documentaries that inform me on new things.
I think the best comparison I can make is ESPNs 30 for 30 documentary series on various sports. A lot of those programs are on things I know little or nothing about, so have been to me more interesting than watching a revision course on someone's life.
That being said, I'll still pick up the blu ray release of Senna with the extra footage, so maybe a second viewing will improve my opinion.
Oh and also, on the way home last night, I said to my wife how awesome a James Hunt movie would be, and today we have:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/06/senna-formula-1-rush-ayrton-hunt-lauda-howard.html
Yesterday?? I wrote about that on my blog last December!!
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/a-james-hunt-biopic/
Where on earth have they been?
Thanks. Sounds like it wasn't too bad then.
I think I could win the Air Asia trip to Singapore too, the entries so far are all kind of weak!
what's with that crazy 'EA' advert? anyone else seeing that? makes it hard to read the post.
EA Sports. Its in the post.
Although I've got nothing to be fair.
what advert?
me only then, never mind.
From Andrew Benson:
F1 bosses agree to compromise on new engine regs - delay by one year to 2014, six-cylinder turbos rather than four. hybrid etc stays
http://twitter.com/#!/andrewbensonf1/status/83534310187081730
Interesting. I wonder if they'll have a volume control?
Boo. I really dislike the current engine formula and I can't understand why they would delay the new one for another year.
there is a complete article on Autosport on this topic, and I believe there was post on Joe's blog yesterday. anybody has any idea how is V6 turbo good for all while V4 turbo only good for Renault when the official main problem was cost of developing new engine ...
It's probably worth investigating which company's have V6 and V4 turbo's R&D'd already for other projects...
I am still puzzled why then the V4 turbos made it to regulations. It was said to be after discussions with the manufacturers... maybe somewhere something got lost in translation from French English German to French English German
Who knows, but it may be worth looking deeper
quick look at google reveals that all current F1 manufacturers have some sort of V6 turbo
May need to look at manufacturers that have projects in the works for 2013/14
Looks like PURE will have to stick two extra cylinders to that engine they planned to run on dyno this year ...
I'm sure Craig will manage
:)

ooh it's Thursday! Cars 2 is out! I am tempted to go see it after work but I think I'll wait til cheap Tuesday. I wonder if Pamela wants to go.
i wish cars 2 was out here :( we have to wait till july!
boo!
i know! i mean we live far away from America but it shouldnt take that long to get to us :)
not when we're further away and we technically get it before they do :D
Hmm, I finish work at 5 tomorrow and I need to be at the pub next to work at 8pm for a talent night...maybe Cars 2 could fill in my 3 hour gap better than coming home and eating dinner... *checks schedule*
Just remember, Senna hasn't been released in the US theaters yet. It goes both ways.
do ittt!!! :)
hmm, 6.30pm, running time 113 minutes, that doesn't work :(
i just find it silly... make it a universal release date.. easy :)
ouch, $25.50. Definitely waiting for cheap Tuesday.
if only you had orange wednesdays!
it's not even any cheaper on Tuesday! Stuuupid! Maybe I'll just go tomorrow and pay the stupid amount of money and miss the start of our talent night. It's not like they're actually talented and I really am not good at waiting for things :)
the stupid thing is its really dear because its in 3D, and I don't even care if I don't see it in 3D, but the last non-3D screening is at 3pm, all the late ones are expensive. What a con :D
see, that's the good think about Orange wednesdays. 2 for the price of 1 on any film, every wednesday. :D so awesome, specially when they put a student discount on top. Almost makes it affordable!
ohhh! i'm really not into 3D.. i dont feel that it makes the film any better and its always more expensive! 2D is the future :)
my local cinema is $9 on Mondays which is generally the only day I go, but they're not showing Cars :( They showed Toy Story 3 so I don't understand their choice.
that is confusing!
they're more arthouse/indy so they don't often show mainstream movies, maybe they just reallly liked Buzz Lightyear :)
or maybe they don't like Hamilton :)
It's not really. They can get full gate for new films so why show them on cheap night? They'll move into that slot at the end of their run probably.
they show their full line up on cheap night :)
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

i think christine might even go to the cinema to see those. maybe.
Outside? Surely not
Forget outside. My #1 enemy at the moment is my phone. Boooo!
50/50. we should get them to make one just to see :)
:D
What is it doing?
Cinema is inside. But also evil.
I was having a nice evening dose and woke up to the phone ringing. Answered it about 60% conscious, thought it was Nick and ended up making a total prat of myself to my OU tutor. Not good.
But you need to go outside to get there
Plus the outside plays even more evil shenanigans when you come out of a cinema expecting it to be dark but it's so bright
Good point.
And that is the phone's fault? Surely it is Nick's fault

Amy i believe. i was gonna do Friday, you can do that one if you like?
I have Friday, Saturday and Monday filled. All other days free.
I shall do Sunday then :)
I'll be writing Friday's daily so it seems only fair to do Sundays otherwise I feel my blogging head may fall off on Thursday evening ;)
There traditionally isn't any play on the middle Sunday... to cover rain delays.. at this rate there may be play but maybe not.
