You're doing it wrong, Doctor.
It's Friday! Hurrah! My favourite day of the week for so many reasons. The end of the week, the start of a new F1 weekend, and of course I get to share a daily with you and that's just the cherry on top of an ice cream made of awesome. And ice cream, of course. There's so much win to share today though. I mean, after all, today is Pi Approximation Day - after all, 22⁄7 is an approximation of pi and today is 22/7! We should celebrate with an approximation of pie. And by that, I mean a whole pie. Several of them. Also, it's a race weekend! So make sure you check out Christine's wonderful collection of race information and enjoy Free Practise today if you can. But first, linkables to enjoy...
Paddock News
Long Live the King... - What a brilliant way to kick off a special weekend to be a Rubens weekend. OK, so it may not be Hockenheim, but the German GP was the first top step finish for Rubens in 2000. What a day, tears were had, brazilian flags were flown, and rain was... raining. But now Rubens has expressed the news that he and Williams are negotiating a drive for 2012 and quite right too. With the return of the Renault engines and Rubens still be awesome at the age of 59 it's exciting times!! Isn't it kind of wierd how he nearly lost his drive before 2009 to Bruno, who bugged me immensely because of that, and now he's still going on several years later after almost winning a championship again and now I heart Bruno too?
Costa La Vista, Baby - And it's a very not so warm goodbye to Ferrari chief engineer Also Costa as the team put him on gardening leave and throw him out in the garbage at the end of the year. Whether he will do any actual gardening has yet to be confirmed. I guess it costa lot in how much they've lost out this year already. I suppose Aldo could head to the Costa Del Sol for a bit if he needs a break, and if he's lacking money, he can always go shopping at Costa. For coffee. Puns are fun.
Can the Trulliometer go that low? - I'm quite excited by this news. The man of moan, the source of all issues, Jarno Trulli, has been suited and booted from the car for this upcoming weekend and replaced by the walking Wikipedia that is Karun Chandhok. Fantastic news I reckon and it's time Karun got a go and seeing how close he can finish to Heikki. Of course it's not all good stuff - RG wrote a quite frankly brilliant post expressing his dismay and annoyance at the decision and it's such a well rounded argument I found at least even if you disagree.
Elsewhere...
Formula 1's not for nerds. It's for geeks! - As if you all need any more reasons why Formula 1 is worth watching, why not 10 more geeky reasons why it's worth it? Yeah, go on then. You can never have enough reasons I find. Science, computers, superhuman athletes, science fiction, and so on and so on. Plus as David Croft said a few weeks ago, if enjoying F1 makes me a geek then bring on the anoraks! F1 fans are just the best geeks ever.
Who's your Destination? - Man, I love this. Some people just have too much time and quite right too when they create absolute genius like this. What if the world of Doctor Who was represented in the form of the London Underground? Absolutely stunning job and the amount of depth is absurd! Talking about Doctor Who, the header image was created by the also genius 500year_diary it seems and can be found over at How to be a Retronaut. Doctor Who fans are just the best geeks ever.
Sonic the Hedgehog is almost as old as me? That's scary - A few weeks ago you may have remembered I wished out favourite blue hedgehog a happy blue birthday (da ba dee da ba dye) and by that I mean a good birthday because he is of the blue variant rather than a depressing birthday. Anyways, I digress - SEGA have put together a brilliant little video highlighting the transformation of Sonic as he evolved from a Megadrive icon to a bit of a shadow of his former self (literally with Shadow the Hedgehog). It shows his better moments from early days, less memoerable moments from newer games, and also Sonic the Hedgehog on the Xbox. Gaming geeks are just the bes... you see where I'm going.
Tiny Linkables So Tiny You Could Eat Them for Breakfast
- Have you given the latest Aside with Joe a listen? It's now available via your favourite Sidepodcast related website, which is Sidepodcast, for all your sidepodcast related Aside with Joe goodies. It's on Sidepodcast, in case you forget. That's this site. Here's a link to the Sidepodcast homepage.
- I'm not quite sure if this is the best version of Knights of Cydonia I have ever seen but I think it may just be. Check out the saxomophone guys about 2 minutes in headbanging. And the awkward dad-style dancing throughout. Wonderful!
- Very sad to see Atlantis has landed and the end of the space shuttle era is here. I'm not behind the idea of commercialising space travel and whatnot right now. I'll really miss seeing these epic shuttles going in and out of space until the commercial sector joins in.
- Have I mentioned how cool the Sidepodcast homepage is? No I haven't. It's a page that's the home for Sidepodcast. Like a home but on a page. You can see it here. And several times above.
- Did you know Microsoft are releasing a Star Wars Xbox 360 with an R2-D2 based console and a C3PO controller? Brilliant stuff! That is honestly the most absurd official console I have seen made by any of the big names, and even has easter eggs built into the hardware too. Ridiculous and brilliant.
That's that for another week, I'm afraid. I hope you've enjoyed reading because the last few Friday's have been a bit wierd not getting a chance to write a proper daily but huzzah! Hurrah! Well, I chanted that whilst writing at least because I'm cool like that. But I hope you have a wonderful day and enjoy Friday to the full because it's not long until the weekend and more awesome F1 to look forward too. See you in the comments, lovely people!
Hello today. :)
hello Friday, how are you here already? Your brother Last Friday wasn't here that long ago.
Jamie Murray had a wee whinge on twitter about being beaten by Blake/Isner in the doubles then them withdrawing from the next match.
"Why do singles players enter doubles tournaments with zero intention of finishing the tournament? Something needs to be done. #badkarma
I guess I can kind of understand what he means but on the other hand it sounds like he's just whinging because he got beaten. Maybe if you played better tennis you wouldn't be beaten by "singles" players and this wouldn't be an issue.
I totally get it. It's flipping irritating if people stop you having things you want then don't even use them. I think it's silly to enter a tournament if you're gonna drop out for reasons other than injury. I'm sure another pair would have loved that slot. It's just a waste.
its a waste, but why not beat them and knock them out legitimately?
Absolutely that would be ideal. I don't feel for Jamie Murray, I feel sorry for whatever wildcard might have been allowed to compete in the tournament instead though.
I guess its a tough one because organisers like having the singles players there because without them a lot of people don't even care about the doubles, and a lot of singles players are nice and will actually play out a tournament so its impossible to say beforehand which ones will drop out.
Maybe they should tell them if they drop out, they have to drop out the singles too. Why do they play in the doubles if they can't be bothered?

The last Australian GP cost $50 million dollars. there's outrage for some taxpayers apparently.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-07-22/melb-grand-prix-cost-revealed/2805908
It would be interesting to see the profit/loss for the entire time the GP has been in Melbourne. I'm guessing that there has been a lot of money made over the years from all the visitors.
Isn't there every year? Some parts of the media, or maybe it's someone else, like to drag this one up after every race. I suppose they will get rid of it eventually. I think motorsport in general is just a very easy target. I thought the crowds this year were huge. I imagine it will be even bigger next year if Webber and Disco Dan are both racing, but some people just don't like it.
The real shame is that, I suspect, if it goes from Melbourne it will be gone from Australia for good.
It all depends how the numbers are presented, statistics are works of art. Many different causes can be backed by using the same set of numbers ...
There is a case of Brno and MotoGP. One of the best attended races on calendar is in danger because of the hosting fees. The fees are nowhere near the F1 fees but still the organizers rely on the support of the local government. There is big chance that the funds gained only in extra VAT generated by visitors, spectators etc would more than offset the funds needed to keep the race going on. Yet the governments like to be re-elected and there are obviously more eligible voters than motorbike racing fans. And not all the eligible voters can comprehend the basic math. But many can understand if someone tells them "we just cut the government spending by XXX millions"
hmmm, yes.
Reading the article though, it is a shame that the cost to "taxpayers" has risen from 1.7M to over 50M in 11 year. I wonder if that is Bernie, or other costs. If it is Bernie, he really needs to take a good look at what is going on. Melbourne was huge with the crowd. Sending the race somewhere with 10 people in the stand would just be stupid.
I really do not know all the financial consequences and I do not want sound like like Bernie's lawyer :-) but again it depends how much the community is gaining. would be interesting to compare for example the hotel prices (and taxes collected) 11 years ago and now. food, drink prices 11 years ago and now etc etc. profits made by everyone involved other than government. also see where the collected tax goes to. there are different levels of government imposing different taxes. the one contributing the most may also be the one gaining the least etc etc
it is not all black and white

No, it never is, and like I said before, some people in Melbourne just want to get rid of the GP
they like to ignore the $32-$39 million that it bought in, it's still a net loss but its not all bad. I'm sure the 350 full time workers would love being unemployed too :)

Ooh, don't remind him about race weekend nachos. We haven't done that for ages.
ooooooooooooooh.
I didn't make them myself so it doesn't count?
fbfb says no!
:)
sod it.
I'll make you nachos another day, promise.
I got carried away, I only went to buy corn chips with salsa and the guy was like 'are you sure you don't want full nachos? are you sure?' and i wasn't sure. damn him.

Hi everyone! How are we all doing today?
HI Emily,
Tired, but OK. You?
Hyped up on caffeine and sugar (blame Turkey Machine for that), and trying to research jobs/job agencies in the UK that I'm qualified for. Also debating on if I should try to make and sell F1 crocheted dolls or not. :)
Hehehee
Seek Unlap for an earful
Unlap? I already make Doctor Who and Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes crocheted dolls.
Oh cool. What kind of licence did you need for that?
Haven't needed one so far, I'm not really making money. Just charging for supplies, not time. I'm mostly just looking for something else to spend time on. :)
Oh fair enough. I thought you meant do as a business type thing
Speaking of Doctor Who, two more DVD's arrived in the post yesterday. Shall watch them tonight.
:)
Nope. If people gave me extra (as quite a few have) for my time, that's their decision, but I don't charge for it, nor expect it.
Still trying to earn money for a plane ticket to the UK when I can secure a job offer, since I have the money for the work visa in the bank. I'm working for my aunt at the moment, but burning dvd's for ministry teaching lessons is quite boring work.
Which DVD's did you get, and YES!
Sweet.
Sounds like a barrel of laughs.
The Rescue / The Romans box set.
I'm looking forward to it, because my VHS copy of the Romans got destroyed in a house move about ten years ago and I haven't seen it since
@ClassicDrWho haven't done a DVD fan sync in a while - wonder what's going on?
:/
I've only seen one of the classic episodes/story arcs. It's nearly impossible to find the classics here in America, and at the moment I can't afford to order them. I want to watch more! :)
Aye - the Region 1 prices do seem to be a bit on the high side at times, which is a shame. Although a few are on YouTube, their quality can be somewhat questionable.
I'd honestly rather buy Region 2. I love my regionless DVD player. :D I'll just have to wait until I'm in the UK and working decently, then I can start working on my collection. :)
One thing I do love about the Doctor Who DVD's is they do some fabulous commentaries / documentaries. Let's just say they don't take themselves too seriously.
:D
Which is one of the wonderful things about them! American made tv shows/DVD's don't usually have commentaries on them, and if they do, it's all serious. *makes a funny face at the word "serious"*
Aye - that can get rather dull after a while
Called a job agency this morning only to discover that both of the jobs I was interested in are already filled, but the good news is that they gave me a list of five other agencies to try, and I was able to complete my CV! :)
My special edition of 2001: A Space Odyssey also arrived
*happy*
Wow - that's really good of them. Excellent.
Woohoo!
Completely off topic, but I discovered yesterday that if I type "wooooohoooo!" on my iPhone, it autocorrects as "sooooooo lollipop!" *facepalm* And they call them "smart" phones. :p
Yes, when I'm hyper, I talk a lot. Turkey Machine lovingly tells me that when I've had caffeine, he can't get me to shut up! *giggles*
Think I've worked out what song I'll use for this week's Something for Weekend. Just have to write about it now.
That is..................... odd.
It struck me as funny and gave me the giggles when I saw it. :D
Right folks,
I'm off - should be back later on.
:)
Have fun!
Ahhhh, Friday evening at last.
Oh yes!
Hi by the way. :) *waves*
Hello!
My thoughts exactly. Hey all
It is raining in Edmonton, where there's an IndyCar race.
Raining quite a lot.

Having been home at least 10 minutes, I am officially late for the pub
Sadly, my drinking companion is behind pan
*behind plan
I had a sneaky plan to get exercise by walking to the beach at West Bay (just over a mile) and back again, and perhaps stopping for a beer or ice cream whilst I was down there.
But really, after work, I can't be bothered.. Maybe tomorrow.
Good afternoon Sidepodworld :)
Did you enjoy today's practice?
I scrubbed down the chicken coop while having my toes pecked at by my hens, does that count as exercise? :p

To be honest I think the Autosport forums are like that about everything :)
It's a dangerous tool with 140 characters to play with and then to attempt sarcasm at the start of a race weekend. Especially following the back and fro of rules at Silverstone
Poor judgement in my eyes from a professional journo
One question. What are the ride heights? I see that some drivers talk about that, but I can't find the correct translation.
Could you explain me what they are, please ?
Thanks :)
The height of the car from the ground
Greater height allows more suspension travel which is more important on a bumpy circuit
Hello there!
Thanks :D
Hi Lukeh! :)
Hi Lukeh, Marti
How are we all today?
I really have to say, following practise on the live text (on IE6 as well, damn computers) from the BBC at work really makes you appreciate just how good the FBFB is. Mahoosive difference in information provided.
Warming up my pub boots, so... pretty good :D
Starting to cook dinner, but coming down from a caffeine high from earlier, so kinda in the middle.
How are you?
Had a really good day at work and it's a Friday evening, very good thanks :)
Wouldn't expect anything less my good man :)
the issue was the "i'll just direct message virgin about this". nstantly creating a have/have nots situation, which virgin wisely diffused as fast as blooming possible.
why didn't you follow autosport?
I don't know why, but Christian Horner hasn't talked to the press in the press release. He didn't spoke yesterday and today nither...
The only website I can go on is the BBC website
(literally, apart from intranet stuff)
cripes.
HopefullyMaybe his voice has finally run out.the bbc website in ie6.
Nuff said. :)
That was the same for me until I had to get proper internet access. Oh and the CAA website but that's no fun, Friday or not
And no video for us either
any site in ie6.
amazed people are so against upgrading. we're working on apps instead of the sidepodcast site, in part, because people aren't upgrading browsers fast enough / at all.
It really is so silly! Even microsoft hate it!
No one has said it, but Webber has been 0'5 seconds faster than the pole he did in the 2009 German GP. Wow.
on one of my work computers when I go to my work-provided home page it reminds me I'm using an unsupported browser, yet IT have no plans to update it.
Thankfully it's the computer I don't use much :D

The pub beckons, catch ya later folks
Have a good one :)
Yay! Dinner is finished! Just sitting here eating while watching Turkey Machine play Super Mario Brothers 3. He's quite entertaining. :p
Well sidepodcast has now been put in the sports quota category at work... Fame at last for Sidepodcast! But it does mean that I am allowed to only look at sidepodcast for 90 minutes a day... Or rather each time I want to look at sidepodcast I have to request a 5 minute block where I can look at it as much as I like, and then it shuts off... So it ammounts to me only being able to look at Sidepodcast 18 times. Which is particularly weird on the realtime pages because updates just stop appearing and I get an error if I try and post a comment. Companies have some very strange ideas about the internet.
indeed. new access is the first question i ask at a job interview.
new access?
sorry, net access. can i use the web with impunity. no? goodbye then.
Ah yes. Do you draw the line at theoretical limits? I mean many jobs might have a "don't look at these kinds of sites in the office" policy rather than an actual enforced firewall rule?
Interestingly it was one of my questions when I joined, and when I joined there wasn't any kind of blocking of sites... but things have changed... ho hum.
I thought you were talking about Microsoft's ever popular database software, that and Lotus Notes are on my no no lists.
ahh yes. i have no need to look at those sites. essentially i'm not wasting my time playing firewall bingo.
:)
My work doesn't like photo hosting sites so often I read daily posts with big red Xs on them :(
He he, tired of babycham
Yes exactly my view... I have explained the concept of traffic shaping to our IT department who have gone away and thought about it and decided this is "easier". But of course easier isn't better.

Nooo, then he'd want to do it at the Williams Centre!
good point. Staying married it is!
Judy: When I was offered the role, I was immediately cautious, I wondered, could I, Dame Judy Dench, really sustain a consistant dial tone for the required three seconds? I realised that my fear of the role was exactly why I should embrace the role. I through myself into the world of telephony and telephone calls and spend six months researching the role. I feel all of that work and effort has been paid back as I receive this my 8,023rd BAFTA.
Jonathan Ross: Sorry, luv, your mic was off during most of that but don't worry about it we got the gist...
threw not though! Doh!

So Mr C... Have you worked out how they are doing today's Google Doodle?
What is it with the return if MC Hammer trousers, is it this summer's 'thing'?
Those and jump suits [facepalm]
Is this an html5 joke?
haven't looked. one sec.
It is HTML5 and it's pretty amazing... It's rendering 3d objects using canvas, the reflection is really a very nice touch too
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/sculpting-interactive-doodle-for.html
wow!!!
The guitar was really nice, this is one that for me, like the dancer people will be wowed by, but I bet coders are in some ways even more wowed by.
it would not work in ie6 :)
apparently if your laptop has an accelerometer then you can do something with it with that?
you can shake it. genius.
my google doesn't have a doodle :(
Amazing isn't it!
boo :(
.co.uk saved me, ooooh prettttty
if you do this I think it will work: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en
"It runs a physics simulation on the mobile’s geometry, and then does realtime 3D rendering with vector graphics"
that's beyond most web devs surely? that's proper maths.
that takes me to a non doodle too
Time to update you cv :)
oh well I hear you can go to .co.uk and that will work :)
hehe.
:D
It's pretty darned amazing... It's totally the future... While google are in some ways scary, things like the doodle really pushing the envelope fill me with joy.
but, as mentioned earlier. until people upgrade, the future is on hold.
well yes and no. Windows 7 will drive change in browers because while IT could ignore IE upgrades they can't ignore windows 7 and ie 6 or 7 won't run on 7.
But the other big thing driving change is the iPad... It's being sold into quite a large number of businesses. And people are then going to their IT departments and saying, "why doesn't my machine work like this" and "why is this better than the fancy machine you made me buy".
I'm never going to be able to doodle again on my notepad knowing what doodling is like at google
true. just feels like waiting forever. i got bored and moved on :)
Lion feature useful for Sidepodcasters?

Yeah well you are mr fancypantsfromthefutureman :)
ooh, i liked reading this btw: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars
Yes... I love love love his podcast with Dan Benjamin called Hypercritical, it really is great (this is not a recommendation for everyone, I just personally love it). He gets so het up by the detail, he was complaining one time for 20 minutes about how hopeless it is that the USB cable is symmetrical on the outside by asymmetrical on the inside so you don't know which way up it is.
I always read his os x reviews they always put things into context, love it :)
You could have a floating Realtime window on your mac at all times.
19 pages!
Oooh Andy Ihnatko is going to start a podcast with Dan too this summer 5by5 really are taking over!
:)
if you print ot out it's really 88 pages if that helps

I haven't promised to visit any of you over the next few days then promptly forgotten about it have I?

Well I don't think I washed the sheets and made the bed for myself now did I? ;)
Sorry to hear that...
It's my own stupid fault. I was on an early today and off tomorrow so I told them I'd go up and stay the night. Today someone is sick and I end up covering their shift and only remember about my parents when they call me to see where I am.

Cheers
:D
i was playing that this afternoon in the car funnily enough, can't remember the video for it at all though

Drop Dead Gorgeous was the reason I dug out the album as it happens
(watches first few seconds) i can see why
You have S'Express in there as well.
I found out recently the US version of Theme From.. had no samples in it
I honestly don't remember it. It was higher in the charts, but for a shorter time - when I heard it recently, I drew a complete blank.
i have that album somewhere too
Aye - another late 80's epic.
I have to check out how that is sitting uncomfortably next to Sugababes in moment :-D
I hadn't realised the Nirvana link
The next two entries are sorted - Donna Summer and Halo Halo. Four entries that go from hardcore punk to techno to disco to all punk-orientated krautrock
I always preferred that one, although maybe because of an overdose of hearing Ready To Go on the Sky Sports football coverage
The F1 Quiz – Germany to keep you amused for a few minutes http://bit.ly/qc3QpV
Also a Vodafone campaign if I remember correctly
Me too... but in the car Ready To Go wins every time. Whether the neighbours thought so is another matter...
and many other ads/shows
Aye - some territories get silly when it comes to licensing rights.
Well if we thought F1 could be weird...
@PantherRacing
Appears every IndyCar media outlet is reporting our practice is moved to 5:15 ... although we haven't been told that from ....... IndyCar.
So now FANS are telling us today's activities have been canceled ... perhaps IndyCar has lost our team manager's Email address?
would you be surprised?
Nope.
I have to get away from a PC screen, have been sat at them since 9am (on and off). Will hit the DVD backlog I think.
Ferrari would never have started the 2007 Japanese GP on the wrong tyres if they'd had twitter
Hang on, I'm talking about @InsideFerrari aren't I? Strike that idea
By the way Mav, you just became the first ever commenter on Something for the Weekend
really? I was surprised I hadn't commented before
If you have nothing better to do I just uploaded a video of a pretty shocking game I've been playing tonight :)
Would you be horrified if I told you I'd played that game....
No because it's the best game ever ;)
i had nothing better to do. that bus must have been setup for NASCAR
rockstar should nick this idea for the next GTA.
Hmmmm you're a lot better than me. I think I hit oncoming traffic.
Needs more onboard
;D
