Another week is ready to get going, although it seems like all the fun stuff is towards the end of it. We've got testing in Barcelona plus a meetup with Joe, but that doesn't kick off until Thursday and Friday. I'm sure we can keep ourselves amused until then, though, and here are some of the things we've been up to:

  • It was guest post central this weekend, as we had four posts over the course of three days. I've mentioned some of them already in previous daily threads, but in case you missed them, here's the full run down of the guest posts we had. It started with Lady Snowcat's In Search of the Iceman, then on to Lewis with Silverstone vs. Silverstone. Lukeh got us feeling optimistic with Approaching the Start Line and finally Brawn2bwild spent A Sunny Saturday Afternoon in Jerez. If you've got a story you want to share, please get writing and forward it to [email protected]
  • If you're looking for more to read, Jackie has a great selection of posts to peruse in her Something for the Weekend roundup. I love reading the roundups in case there is something I have missed, which there usually is. Definitely worth checking out.
  • SpeedTV's Adam Cooper has written an interesting post about the possibility of a return to F1 by Jacques Villeneuve, although it really is more about the likelihood of Stefan GP making the grid. I can't believe there are so many team changes this close to the season beginning, but it's certainly giving the journalists something to do!

That should do it for now. There'll be an F1 Debrief podcast along at some point this evening, and until then, I will see you in the comments.

since you all had so much to say on ski cross i am ready to watch a replay in 15 minutes. There is a stereophonics gig on at the moment. I didnt know canada would have heard of them.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 01:05

    BBC just started hickey coverage.

Ski cross is awesome. Women's event is tomorrow

We should find out in ten minutes if the space shuttle is going to land at 3:20am UK time

You mean that after looking at everyone with blankets over them shivering he's realised that you may be cold?

I think it's code for "we gave you a gift voucher, now we want you to work harder and longer for the same money"

The email didn't have the word 'challenge' in there somewhere did it? :-)

It just ended on BBC as well so they must only have shown highlights. I wasn't paying attention. I don't know if you have the same commentator but ours wanted Canada to stop playing nicely and get down and dirty

It is the first period break, it is about a 15 minute break.

The commentator is actually right. Canada is bigger. They are wearing down the Americans a bit but they really need to physical to break them.

i like snowboard cross more than ski cross. I havent seen enough people fall down. Perhaps because my back is to the tv

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 01:31

You will and spectacularly. They run 1st round, 2nd round, semis and finals all one after the other. The further on the competition goes the closer the skiers get as the weakest get eliminated. If you haven't seen anyone fall you must have your eyes closed

  • Amy22/02/2010 at 01:38

i am only seeing about 2 seconds of each run because i am too busy to turn around. My blanket stealer also stole my desk that has a tv in line of sight when i am looking at my computer

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 01:39

We are tied up again. 2-2. Canada just finally broke a tired American back line.

  • Amy22/02/2010 at 01:44

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 01:45

i assume i will see more crashes when the qualifying is over and they go in groups instead of individual

I didn't see qualifying. I imagine it is pretty dull. When there are 4 and only two go through they get very determined to be one of the two. If I was you I would ignore qualifying

    #sidepodspace update

Mission control just gave the go for de-orbit burn. The shuttle is travelling backwards and fires its engine for about 4 minutes. This slows the shuttle enough that it falls from its orbit.

The de-orbit burn will take place in around half an hour and will land an hour after that. They can cancel the de-orbit burn at any time between now and a second or two before it starts but once they start they have to land as they don't have enough power to boost it back to orbit.

Landing should be at 3:20am UK time

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 01:55

De-orbit burn in 21 minutes time

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 01:59

I have the game on and missed that due to NASA. If the Candians keep getting players sent off they are bound to lose goals

Nash and Crosby? No Stills or Young?

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 02:41

Canada had 45 shots to 22 for USA. That is incredible

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 02:57

Wow... I don't know how they won that game. The shots were so lopsided.

The entire nation of Canada will be pulling its' hair out.

For those that may not know, but the pressure put on Team Canada is like what England faces every world cup.

If anyone is wanting to watch.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:12

Sounds like everything is perfect for the landing. 5 minutes to go

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:18

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 03:22

    Worst coverage ever

I wished they showed the HUD display all the way down. That is an insane attack angle.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:22

Nice landing but could have been covered a lot better even if it is dark. The view through the HUD at night must have been really good but we didn't get it until it was almost on the runway.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:24

I wished they showed the HUD display all the way down. That is an insane attack angle.

They showed that view 5 or 6 missions ago and stayed with it for a long time and it was really interesting. It's pitch black there so I assumed as soon as it was in range they would go to the HUD cam and stick with it.

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 03:25

Is that a flame off the top near the base of the tail or is that a strobe light?

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:27

Is that a flame off the top near the base of the tail or is that a strobe light?

Not a flame. I think it is a strobe and just the hot air from the wings etc rising through it. The engines are not used for landing.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:27

Next shuttle launch is April 5th so not long to wait for more action

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:27

That does look like a flame but it is not

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:28

It is a flame? I have never seen that before. Must be pretty much invisible in daylight

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 03:32

The commentator said the flame is from the APUs (auxiliary power units). These are hydrazine fueled and hydrazine burns with a blue flame so may not be as obvious in daylight.

That's not what you were saying before!

You're right. I guess it's because I'm used to seeing the trickery for static images.

  • RubberGoat22/02/2010 at 09:09

an interesting look at how video looks before / after it's been on the colouring table:

I actualy like it before, after it all looks very cold and harsh

That's just the choice of colour palette being a cold one. It's very easy to over do it - I always try and be very minimal when correcting photographs...

not true, sadly. these systems (or ones similar) are already in place in most if not all premiership grounds already, and the only thing they're good for is tracking practice sessions.

the problem is, a lot of the interesting action in sports happens off the ball, and it still takes skilled people to catch those moments. think about the little winker ronaldo... well winking. apidis can't catch that.

it's a nice idea, and i wish it would work, it could revolutionise event coverage. sadly it doesn't, it just makes everything appear bland and repetitive.

What about in Motorsports though? Say if a camera was fixed on one car or only shifted when a car went off-line?

the problem with motorsports is the area they tend to cover. it could work for RoC, but the thing only would on a pre-defined grid.

so basketball, tennis, football are all candidates. motorsport, not so much.

    Football info there!

I made up a little bit of football patter the other day... I'll try it out and see if it works...

So I see the Arsenal youth program has started to pay dividends with Sol Campbell being called up... Actually it was funny to watch him play made you ask how long it had been since he last played right? Apparently turns out it was such a long time ago, the last time he played you could pass back to the goalkeeper.

Would that sound convincing if you knew about football?

well done, you must have gone to specsavers

  • Jon Waldock22/02/2010 at 11:51

I'm not sure that's even fair - there was a struggling US car manufacturer base backed by the US government ready to pounce at the drop of a hat

oh course, and im sure they've fixed all the problems have been fixed quickly etc, but for example, BMW had a disk problem on one of their cars where it shattered under braking, the disk broke, under braking!? but did we hear about it at hte time? nope

  • Maverick22/02/2010 at 11:52

At least in the FJ i can blast though the desert and pretend that im kimi ;)

why, what is its NCAP crash rating?

Its a tank. NCAP would be too scared to test it

The track is really green if not wet or icy, the wind is really strong and makes your car a bit trickier, as if you needed it, but still, you’re driving and that’s what truly matters! You don’t really bother if Mr Weather is messing around…

At the 12 Hours of Sebring, Sebastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy and Nicolas Minassian will be involved on either of 908, while the second meet Alexander Wurz, Marc Gené and Anthony Davidson.

LM24 entry list shows 3 'works' Peugeots and one independent.

    http://www.planetlemans.com/le-mans-2010-le-mans-24-entry-list/

It shows Minassian and Bourdais and separate cars, Christine's earlier link showed the two together at Sebring so it looks like they are chopping and changing the lineups.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 16:02

    What is a 'routier-sprinter'?

    http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/81637

Routier is a truck driver I think. When you see a truck woth a plate saying TIR on it, it is to allow them to operate in foreign countries without registering in them. TIR is trans inter routier. That is the limit of my knowledge assuming that passes as knowledge.

I assume routier-sprinters are drivers who will not go flat out from the start

  • me22/02/2010 at 16:03

I assume routier-sprinters are drivers who will not go flat out from the start

    weird!

wouldn't they want everyone to do that?

  • Journeyer22/02/2010 at 16:04

wouldn't they want everyone to do that?

In old Le Mans, everyone (or most cars) were routier-sprinters. The cars couldn't go that fast that long. Nowadays, it's less common, but it allows cars who stay out of trouble to be a factor later if those at the front screw up.

  • me22/02/2010 at 16:05

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 16:07

wouldn't they want everyone to do that?

The traditional way for a three car team at Le Mans was for one to be the rabbit and go flat out forcing the opposition to chase it on the off chance it would be reliable enough to get to the end. The idea was to break opposition cars while the other two ran slightly slower and a lot more reliably.

I guess now the cars are a lot more reliable they have two cars going flat out and the other not taking too many risks.

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 16:08

    ah-ha. like maybe... a tank?

    Nooooo.

Going by last season Franck's car and the winning car will be the sprinters

I assume routier-sprinters are drivers who will not go flat out from the start

Ah. I didn't realise they had a name.

But for now... no guts, no glory. :D

  • Scott Woodwiss22/02/2010 at 16:15

I assume routier-sprinters are drivers who will not go flat out from the start

I just did a search on Google and apparently it's a cycling term. Could mean something like a support car or something.

  • Journeyer22/02/2010 at 16:16

I suppose it would be a bit rubbish to have the last vote as What will Mitch have for breakfast?

Yes, but still! I was thinking of another possible last vote, but the one you're teasing is MUCH better.

I suggest that the Anthony Davidson role cannot be replaced by 1 man alone. I will only accept one of two options:

    1) Brian Blessed and Tom Baker (to borrow Lukeh's suggestion from earlier)

    or

    2) Jacques Villeneruve and Jon BARROWMAN!!!! *shakes fist*

  • Bassano22/02/2010 at 16:58

Barrowman should go in the same box as Legard. Can you imagine what that would be like. Then we can have Croft and Brundle for people on this planet

    Hi All

I've been lurking for ages!!! sorry lol

What does this mean (talking about Ant Davidson's LeMans drive)

    Pug statement:

"We needed two teams of sprinters and one of routier-sprinters while at the same time maintaining a sense of balance. It is my belief that we have three crews capable of victory at Le Mans."

What's a routier sprinter?...that a posh way of sayin we want two quick teams and a consistent slow team?

  • Bassano22/02/2010 at 17:30

Seems to be a cycling term. Two teams go absolutely flat out and one goes slightly slower to guarantee reliability.

    Morning / afternoon everyone.

Not to beat a dying horse, but something dawned on me when I was at a hearing this morning about the slow death of USF1. I blogged about it today, but to save you the effort of a click... USF1 might have a court case against Bernie if the Concorde Agreement is in violation of the FIA rules at the time it was drafted.

After all, isn't it mandatory that we should have some high drama court case at the beginning of every season. ;)

I guess so. I do tend to park and get the train into big cities but I'd think Heathrow parking must cost a fortune! Is it not cheaper to find a residential area near another train station and dump your car there....

it wouldn't be an F1 season without it!

Unfortunately Lawyering up (whether USF1 is in the right or wrong on this one) requires money, which is USF1's problem. They don't have any. Also, if there's even the slightest possibility that you might try and re-apply for a spot next year (if that's even feasible) would you want to get deeper into Bernies bad side? Even if you ARE in the right?

  • Bassano22/02/2010 at 17:54

You can't find finance sitting with your head in your hands. They have a TV station at their beck and call and should have been using it for the lasty ear.

I get one item every 3 or 4 weeks

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 17:56

Unfortunately Lawyering up (whether USF1 is in the right or wrong on this one) requires money, which is USF1's problem. They don't have any. Also, if there's even the slightest possibility that you might try and re-apply for a spot next year (if that's even feasible) would you want to get deeper into Bernies bad side? Even if you ARE in the right?

I don't think they have enough to hope for next year. It is now or never for these guys.

You can't find finance sitting with your head in your hands. They have a TV station at their beck and call and should have been using it for the lasty ear.

That been their problem. They expected companies to flock to them and it didn't happen. Either they thought Hurley was going to pull through or some U.S. company was just going to show up with a semi full of cast because they like Formula One.

Ridiculous. I would love to know how many presentations to Fortune 500 companies they did in the last 12 months. I imagine not many.

What people forget is Windsor nor Anderson are not businessmen. Either of them have never had to sign a paycheck for employees before. With an investment like this, I am starting to think Hurley isn't much of one either.

  • jpancoast22/02/2010 at 18:00

yeah, I'm doubtful they'd have the money to do that.

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 18:09

Funny, I was writing my Williams F1 team preview last night. In my previews I have a section called "Three Questions" where I pose three questions and answer them. I almost put down as the first one, "Is Claire Williams single?"

Then I realized that might be the first step in becoming a internet stalker the likes of Christine.

    @Lou,

If you are really serious about getting into professional photography, especially automotive photography, you might want to look into this place.

I had a scholarship there and nearly went, but I decided to go to a four year school with a journalism program because journalism is where all the jobs are at. ;)

    Last season's winning car.

  • Dan Brunell22/02/2010 at 18:25

No. My dad had my grandpa's old Speed Graphic, so I got some film and shot with it.

That not even the oldest camera I've ever operated. For my BFA photo project, shot the entire series with my great grandmother's box camera from 1873.

  • lou22/02/2010 at 18:26

i'm freaking out about maybe going as far as Falmouth... California is even worse! plus... as long as i enjoy the course and gain something from it i don't mind. It's my work that will mean something at the end of it.. i mean it could be the worst photographic department ever but as long as you've got a passion for it surely that's all that matters?

  • Nick in Dubai22/02/2010 at 18:26

    Last season's winning car.

ah.. got out of that one!

Do they use the same cars as last year?

Or just the same designs used to build new cars with some updates?

Not really. You need to find out the easiest way to get from university to the job you want. Is there a university that many of the F1 photographers have gone through? Is there one that offers a course that is somehow slanted to motor sport? Is there one with a better reputation than the others?

You do know that when you become an F1 photographer you will have to leave Kent?

  • Steven Roy22/02/2010 at 18:33

Or just the same designs used to build new cars with some updates?

This year's cars will be slightly modified versions of last year's. 2011 has a major re-jig of the regulations so those cars will be totally new.

yeah, out of the choices i have Falmouth's press and editorial photography course is gear towards whatever you want to study.. i mean. If you want to cover motorsport you do (as several of their graduates did - some of whom are now motosport photographers). Falmouth has links with loads of agencies too. Southampton Solent also has links with photographic agencies, as does uni of Kent and Farnham (my other choices). Most F1 photographers (from what i can gather) have worked up from covering events for race tracks to lower series etc.

You do know that when you become an F1 photographer you will have to leave Kent?

Everyone matures at a different rate. I wasn't ready to do that at 18 but lots of other people are. What I have learned since is that it would have done me the world of good to have done that then but everyone has to learn from theirself until someone invents time travel and our future selves can tell us what only age can teach us.

I am not suggesting that Lou should definitely go but she should not automatically rule it out.

  • Bassano22/02/2010 at 18:44

Lou if you ever want some work in London I have a friend who is a pro snapper, is always looking for eager assistants. Think he pays 10% of the job fee

I don't think I've ever showed you guys any of these. Here some examples from that camera. Crater Lake, OR; US Highway97; and Klamath Falls Rd.

I used to work a lot with 4x5 camera outdoors. Here is an example of that.

These are pretty poor slide transfers. I am still old fashion that I shoot most of my personal stuff in film.

You would be amazed how easily you would adapt. It is far easier to move abroad to study when you will be with a bunch of like minded people of similar age than going away to work even if it is only to cover a race when you will be with a bunch of old men who have been doing it for ever.

    Nice colouring though

Thanks, that when I worked at the color lab in college. There is nothing like slaving over a pool of diluted hydrochloric acid and sliver bromide in a completely dark room for hours at a time.

That is insane. Presumably it means they need a signature. There are various fax programs for PCs that were common years ago but I can't remember the last time I saw one.

  • Turkey Machine22/02/2010 at 20:23

has the live streaming spec been available that long?

They've had their choice of many different levels to settle on, but nobody's got a decoder fast enough to play it on most computers and accurate enough not to break when it plays an illegal stream. CoreCodec can't sort the licensing out for their CoreAVC decoder, and they'd make MILLIONS if Flash took that one on as their H.264 decoder. The only one to play all H.264 streams out in the wild correctly is libavcodec, but unfortunately it's too slow for modern playback (multithreads). :(

The logic behind this idea is the same as used by the Alonso fans who thought last year that Kimi would swap drives with Alonso. It suited their man and Ferrari and it never occurred to them that Kimi may not want to waste a year at Renault. Why would Stefan GP agree to go to the expense of setting up to do 4 races then walk away so that another team can have the slot. I am amazed that people with this level of logic have not killed themselves by walking in front of a bus because the bus will know they are going to step in front of it and will automatcially avoid them

    okay... maybe not.. how about Fisi? he's rather awesome :P {Comment #424}

I'd be pleased if he did do Bahrain, but he's stuck doing a LMS race in Belgium while the Spanish GP weekend is on (unless Ferrari F1 invokes the reserve clause, which won't be much help to Five Live) and I think I heard something about a Le Mans reserve involvement, which would also rule Canada out.

  • Alianora La Canta22/02/2010 at 22:58

You want someone British, who knows what the cars are like, and most people have an idea who he is.

    Paul di Resta.... {Comment #435}

An excellent idea - provided they find a substitute for the three Friday sessions (Paul may find simultaneous driving of the VJM03 and commentating a touch tricky).

My F1 Racings seem to come on a random day of the week between the Saturday and Wednesday prior to them arriving on the shop shelf. Apart from the occasion two years ago when the shops beat the post by two days.

That's my local post system for you - the same one that can't make its mind up whether to deliver at 8:30am, 2:30pm or somewhere in between...

Haven't got beyond the Murray column yet, so for all I know there could be.

I do know I needed a magnifying glass to read the contents page though. Oh, and Mr C may wish to skip the last page...

  • Amy22/02/2010 at 23:32

the way i catch up on comments used to be load comments, read to bottom then click comment number then refresh page to get all the new comments since i started reading. This meant my last read comment was on top. Now when I click the comment number it takes me to the post content and I have to click again to read the comments. That comment page loads at comment #1 and I never remember what number I am up to. It does the same when I try a link from doohickey if i have missed more comments than what displays. I have read the daily content about 15 times a day since it changed. I dont like change :(

He can also do the Saturday practise and whichever Friday session he isn't driving in each race as well (since I don't think Force India are going to convince the other teams to let them field three cars just yet). So there's still a vacancy for the other three sessions. And I'm not sure who to suggest for them...

am moving half the site very, very soon.

Half the site? Is that a good idea? Is that not like countries switching to driving on the left but to make it easier they have the trucks and buses switch one day and cars the following day

  • me22/02/2010 at 23:42

indeedy. I just checked opera mini and that works fine so it appears to only do it in the built in nokia browser

understood. i have no nokia with which to test, hadn't accounted for that.

the reason for that change is because someone said that post content wouldn't load on their mobile. the reason was the quantity of comments was flipping out the limits of the browser memory. so the comments have been lobbed into a separate page.

the permalinks are fixable though, i'll have a think. sorry about the breakage, i'll try and find a phone for testing.
