Halfway through the week, and apparently it is Administrative Professionals' Day. According to Wikipedia, this is a holiday celebrated in the States to recognise the work of receptionists and the like. Don't tell me that Sidepodcast never teaches you anything. Anyway, on with the F1 stuff:
- It looks like FOTA are struggling, as we have long suspected they would. At least they are admitting that things aren't as rosy as they once were, instead of pretending that everything is fine minutes before they break up for good. It also seems everyone involved still wants to try and maintain good relationships which makes for a good foundation to work from.
- Bourdais says that he's just not comfortable within the STR4 and it's not working for his style of driving. Hmm. I'm sure we've heard this before somewhere. Oh yea, that's right, last year! It's no big secret that Le Seb and I have fallen out, but I can't be the only one that thinks this is just a big, fat excuse.
- It is another day of note for Mr C, as he has yet another picture published. Okay, this one is more the online variety, but just as important as any page 22 goings on. Ollie at Blog F1 has selected a pic for his weekly caption competition, and it is one of Mr C's from Silverstone 2007. Go and have a look now, and leave a caption.
- Finally, there are two excellent rants in the blogosphere to keep you occupied. Scott's a little bit annoyed that Piquet is still around, whilst RG would rather not see any more rain... for a while, at least.
That'll do it for today. Keep the conversation flowing, it must be time to start looking ahead to Bahrain now, and I will see you in the comments.
lets :)
"Scott’s a little bit annoyed that Piquet is still around"
Annoyed's a massive understatement. Waste of space in that team and should never have been allowed to line up on the grid at Melbourne. Every lap he's in that car, he's denying an excellent talent like Grosjean or di Grassi a chance to show their true talents. Ridiculous.
hehe, thats piquet then
Not at all. Piquet is there to make Alonso look better.
Maybe, but I still want him out.
Piquet wasn't too bad in GP2 was he? Just can't cope with F1?
Speaking of blogs.. I was going to mess with the layout of mine at the weekend after I had trouble getting my London pics the way I wanted them. Now I'm wondering about jumping to Wordpress.
I'm not sure its all his fault, Renault have a habit of bringing in new talent and then screwing them up
Do it :D
That's what I pointed out in my post. It seems like whenever a driver makes the switch from F3000 or GP2, something just changes and they either flourish or flop. You don't need me to tell you which category PK's in.
Maybe.. I'll to spend time on it, so I'll just play with the layout on Saturday and think about changing over in the summer.
I guess so. No guarantee the others will do any better, but I guess it's time to find out.
It's not a hard change, but it depends what you want from a blog
Perfect examples of those who flourished are Rosberg, Hamilton, Glock and Montoya.
Other than Hamilton, has there really been an F3000/GP2 talent that flourished in F1? After all, Hamilton is the only F3000/GP2 champ that has gone on to become F1 champ.
But i would say they have all been lucky (Apart from Glock maybe) to get into a team that is really supportive and nurturing first time
Until now I've just wanted a space to put words. Now I want something I can customise and I want to have a column of stuff on each side of the text - and a wider text space.
Depends what you mean by flourished for most of them. Rosberg is struggling right now, Glock is ascendant but inconsistent, and Montoya took the fight to Michael Schumacher but never won a title in what were good cars (Williams 2003, McLaren 2005).
What has Rosberg done?
Maybe they should stop dragging these guys into F1 at 21 and give them a few more years learning. It's only going to get harder without testing.
GP2/F3000 or F2. The thing is if a driver is really good genereally they don't do the GP2 level. They go straight to F1 from F3. Now because there are so few F1 seats and no testing it is no longer the case though.
Without in season testing, it will be even harder for drivers to adjust their style to suit the car. These people are supposed to be the best in the world so I have no doubt that they try to change.
I'm sure that getting an F1 car to it's limit and keeping it there is difficult, but is coming to terms with a new chassis that feels different really that hard? I'd like to hear what other F1 (or open wheeler?) drivers think because they are the only one's that truly know.
That's how it used to be in the period between F2 being pulled and F3000 properly taking off. Hakkinen's a classic case in point. Went straight to F1 after winning the British F3 title in 1990.
Agreed. But look at Kubica and Vettel - they bypassed GP2 and both don't seem to be suffering for it. In the past, Raikkonen and Massa skipped it too.
There are very few drivers who don't do GP2/WSR level, it's just not a viable option anymore. And what annoys me most about this new F2 is the FIA want it to be a stepping stone between F1 and F3, but it won't happen, the cars aren't fast enough!
They didn't ,they did World Series by Renault which is the same level with very similar cars
Bedtime for me. Speak to you all tomorrow.
Hate to say it, but F2 is just a glorified FPA on a global scale.
True. But Raikkonen and Massa didn't go there, either. Alonso DID go there when it was still Nissan-branded, right?
Kimi didn't even do F3. He got scooped up from FRenault.
Yup, 1999 champion I believe.
Oh yeah, of course, and it makes it even more FPA like because MSV are doing it. Especially since it uses the same engine, although a bit more beefed up
And scored on his debut. Where is that Kimi now?
or just a European scale.
Don't happen any more though.
Night. I refsue to sleep until I fix the comments bug on my blog..
Some drivers, very few,can make the jump, but not with the amount of testing now allowed, it just wouldnt happen
Eating ice cream.
And wearing a hat about 4 sizes too big.
Bugger, not back on that top 5 commenters just yet. Methinks I got a long way to go.
Remember, young driver testing is excluded from the ban. So if the teams really wanted to, they would test new talent. It's just that after Kubica and Vettel (and possibly even Buemi), we've probably already gathered the next set of F1 stars - it should be more than enough to cover us for a decade.
3000 comments in 30 days (a hundred a day!) is a tough, tough place to get to.
But then thinking about it, wouldn't the teams exploit a loophole in the rules there and test new parts on the car at the same time?
But isnt there a limit on young driver testing? I thought it was 4 days, but i may be wrong, and still thats really low.
I'd be happy getting back to 5th place. It'd be a start.
Isn't that something in the region of 2100 comments? That's still 70 comments a day! :D
Uh oh... I forgot. Luckly there is 30 minutes left in my work day.
I reckon I've managed that just this evening. 'Tis not hard ;)
They could, but young drivers would provide a very bad baseline, as they're not really sure how fast they can go in an F1 car.
Forget the FIA bull F2 to me looks like an F3 alternative.
Not sure on this one, to be honest.
This would be tomorrow for you, right? ;)
Track testing is track testing at the end of the day. Any chance they'd have, I'm sure they'd take it. And to get around the young driver problem, could they not have one of the race or test drivers present to help the engineers go over the data?
Yes but young drivers only get an exception for four days every two seasons.
Initially it won't be, but if it dosen't flop then it will become one. But saying that, F3 is one of the most popular series world wide, i can't see it being replaced.
Depends what the part is i guess, if its sometihng that just needs data then fine, but if its a part that needs pushing then its probs not hte best idea
The F2 needs to be a car that's closer to something like GP2 or WSR. Looking at it, the F3 cars look more of a machine than the F2 does.
5th is RG on 2455
Mmm, rookie mistakes could lead to some repair bills.
F2 is faster though, and rightly so. Also includes boost button, changable wing flap from the car, and front (or rear, i forget) anti roll bar that cna be changed in teh car
So that's something like 83 comments a day, then. ;)
Or 82, rather. Ah, well, 82, 83, not much difference. :D
Flowers will be on her desk tommorow morning bright and early with a card from me. I don't think she realized it was today... hopeful my P.A. will assume by getting something from me tommorow, that tommorow is today' holiday.
Darn my human body ;) this young driver debate is good. :)
Anywho, i need my sleep. Night all!
Should I be worried that I consider "Thinking of You" by Katy Perry as a driving song?
The UK is just celebrating the holiday today (Wednesday), so if you give her flowers tomorrow, you're bang on schedule.
Oh god......
No.
Add a little bit of AC/DC like "shoot to thrill" or "Highway to Hell."
Ooh good one with Shoot to Thrill.
Yay I fixed it, comments are now postable on my blog. Thank goodness for that!
I'm heading off now it's fixed. Night everyone :)
That's more like it! "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen is also a good choice.
What holiday?
Read the post. :)
First sentance. ;)
How am I supposed to know there is a post with the doohickey. I need flashing lights to tell me there is a post.
Stupid holiday
Mr C mentioned it a few comments down.
Some will appreciate it more than others. :)
In yesterday's thread I assume.
True, but in the same doohickey. :)
Oh yeah
Actually, a lot of 80's hair metal rock works for driving songs. How about Iron Madien "The Trooper," Van Halen "Panama," and G&R "Paradise City?"
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf
Thunderstruck - ACDC
Kind of depends who you have in the car with you.
Or who is running the iPod !
Apparently as well as the stupid holiday it is earth day according to NASA.
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/earthday/
...and it's Wednesday as well !
Morning everybody!
Google told me that as well when I turned on my internet. What is Earth Day? Do I get a day off for it? No? Then I don't care.
This round-the-world commenting gets confusing.
Assuming your name is correct, we are coming from the same place. Well, maybe, I'm in Sydney.
Ah, ok. A little while ago the poms were saying good night :-)
Yeah, the worst part about that is that you've just gotten out of bed and your brain really doesn't want to do much, then people are saying goodnight to you. That does get confusing sometimes.
This is fun. A few more I've taken out of my LP collection.

James Allen did nt moderate Bassano's comment.
What's up with Darren Heath, anyway? Not sure what you and Bassano were referring to.
the best driving songs are those about drivers like the wonderful heikki song in the drop.io. I also have songs about mika and alonso. Stay tuned for uploads. Im totally kidding about them being the best by the way, i just want an excuse to upload hilariously bad songs.
Is that by Mika, or about him?
about. I have 2 about him actually.
This will be interesting, are you singing?
Schumacher the Michael did one race in Japaniese F3000 (and won it in admittadly a top car).
But if you want to look at the European F3000/GP2 series - then Damon Hill was the fist F3000 graduate to win the F1 WDC. His was trully a case of flourishing in F1 after F3000, although this is much to do with his Williams F1 car being rather more reliable then his (footwork?) F3000 car. He would have won a handfull of races in F3000 if his car had lasted the distance.
Also, Alonso is an F3000 graduate, and he has done rather well in F1 too.
wow. respect... assuming he got the joke of course.
his career may been ruined by a certain voiceover artist using his work in a certain montage (names avoided to protect the innocent),
:D
You just up or have you never gone to bed?
just woke up. i had a bit of a loud coughing fit and had to get up.
thankfully i opted not to broadcast this one to the entire world!
me? Sing? No. Just things i have found online haha.
feeling any better?
Was that you who posted the Heikki song?
yeah, think so cheers. i still blame bassano of course.
Well it's my last day at work today and I'm thinking of staying home
last day ever? and if so, will there not be goodbyes etc?
Yep last day ever and the goodbyes thing is exactly the reason I don't want to go in
Because you think it will be sad or because you don't like the people?
There might be cake. Cake is good.
True, but tears are bad
nooo, tears are good... occasionally.
Ah, not the amount I'm liable to do.
If you don't turn up it could leave a pretty bad impression I think.
I'm sure they would understand though
mmm. plus tears usually lead to hugs, and who wouldn't want hugs?
You could just run away when things get emotional. Someone did that here today on there last day.
Thing is, they are my friends and they don't want me to go either, they'll just feel bad if I start to cry
surely not half as bad as if you don't turn up at all?
Who knows, if I'm upset now just thinking about it, it'll be a thousand times worse actually going in
You know, going to the pub is always an option.....
cake and pub? what an awesome day!
That's something we don't do .. and I ain't gonna go on my own
Shows you I'm easily pleased, but not so emotional I guess.
Anyway, enough of me .. anything happening in the F1 news .. it just doesn't seem like a race weekend is looming
we can never have too much jackie!
i think f1 community are basically shattered from bernie's punishing ealy season schedule. i know i am and i haven't got on a single plane.
They must be, it wasn't till I listened to that podcast with Joe about the 50,000 miles in 5 weeks that it sunk home how hectic a schedule it is
guilty as charged
thought it might have been :D .. tis quite catchy after a couple of listens
we'll have to check if it's ever happened before, but bernie compressed the start date to coincide with uk dailylight savings and that means two sets of back-to-backs before we even get to europe.
Thinking of the Heikki song .. I wonder if giggles does requests .. we could have a whole sidepodalbum of driver songs. Anyone any good at lyrics
And that was a really great post of Christine's yesterday about Heikki. I do hope he gets the chance to compete on an equal footing but I seem to recolect something about Lewis getting two new parts fitted to his car in China whereas Heikki only had one .. so much for equal treatment
on that sunject, any one know if piquet got a new diffuser like alonso did? renault may have shipped two of them, but i only ever heard people discussing alono's.
as far as i know, he didn't use the new diffuser last weekend.
in which case we ought cut him a little slack. very mean of flav if that was the case.
As far as I know it was only Alonso
I'm not sure it made that much difference to Alonso in the end, appart from the qualifying glory lap.
Or Alonso got some new parts and Piquet didn't. I know its not fair either but if they only have time to do one, and they want the maximum feedback it makes sense to do it that way
Have you been up all night?
Ah I see only since 5:44... Sorry you're still ill.
nope. needed a drink, am going back to sleep in a minute, just wanted to check the comments.
can you tell jackie to go to work pls? kthanxbye ;)
oh dear ;)
Morning :D :D :D
Jackie, I understand it's a bit scary... But you only get one chance to do the goodbye thing. You won't want to think back in a while and say, "maybe I should have gone in"?
Right now I feel like a kid with the "I don't want to, can't make me" attitude
If only I knew more of your names... I could say...
Jacqueline Middlename Surname you will get in that car and go to work. ;)
That's the spirit, you can do it!
:D oh err, I know I've been bad when I get Jacqueline
I can see that foot hovering above the floor ready to stamp and if you don't hurry up and get in that car I'll smack your legs ;)
I think I've regressed ;)
Haha
So having done an impression of one of my parents. It would be bad not to do the other one.
Jackie, it's not that you have to go to work, of course you don't. But if you don't I will just be terribly disappointed in you.
Ooh err, that's worse :D
It's not that I don't like my work/workmates .. its quite the opposite in fact. I was very fortunate to have a job I loved .. wee it didn't really seem like a job. It was where I went to play, to have stimulating conversation and to learn
I know... My mum has the big guns!
Erm... i'm a bit of a rabbit in the headlights here... why don't you want to go to work, jackie?
Right. So they'll want to say goodbye to you. Properly. Go on Jackie. So what if you cry? Is there a no crying policy at the office? Does somebody run up with an eyedropper and suck the tears off of your cheeks and escort you off of the premises with them?
I just think that you not turning up on your last day could be seen as a bit of an insult to your workmates. Especially if they've organised anything, even somethings small, for you no to turn up would be really bad form imo.
This is a very compelling point.
Oh, so THAT'S what's going on.
Do your officemates know you're not coming in? If not, I suggest you drop by, even for only half a day, if that will make you feel better.
Also you wouldn't have told us unless you secretly wanted us to convince you to go. So we all know that you actually want to go really.
Exactly ;)
:D
So off you go then, we'll here from you later :-)
The real problem is I want to go and not leave at all
So why not stick around for the day then? No harm in doing that.
Why did you have to leave a job you loved? :(
It's the big redundancy word. There just isn't the money to continue my research
Ohhh... That's just awful. :( Have you found a new job?
Not yet. I haven't been looking that hard, been in such a tizz about finishing here
OK, we can cut him a little slack for being awful in China. What about Sepang and Melbourne?
Who will win the 'Ralf Schumacher award' for 'hanging on in F1 past their sell by date' this year?
The nominations are:
Piquet
Fisi
Sutil
and Max Mosley
Hmmm. Been through that in a research company. It's not nice. Can't offer any advice other than staying friends with the folk there. It was still the best place I ever worked......
Gotta be Max Mosley? But if we're talking about drivers, I'd say Piquet, from Fisichella and Bourdais.
I don't think he's going anywhere. Out of the others you mention, for me it has to be Fisi
Piquet.
Thanks Paul
Definately not Sutil. He's not that bad, if he were in Piquet's spot I have no doubt that he would do better than him.
Right now, I actually think there's a 50-50 chance he won't run again. But that means he'd give his blessing to... Monsieur Todt.
Is that better or worse though?
I think he looked like the emperor from Star Wars on the grid last weekend!
Sorry to hear that Jackie.
Must be horrible :(
I did have a thought though... Don't you have personal affects you'll need to collect? Coffee mug, Picture of Hekki, Copy of F1 racing turned to Page 22?
For me, I think it's better. Todt knows what he's doing, and I don't think he's as knocked up in the head as Mr Mosley is.
That said, he has to disprove that he will have bias for or against Ferrari. He has to be able to show objectivity. But considering his CV (at Peugeot and Ferrari), he's been good at everything he's done before, so I don't think this will be an exception.
Took them all home last night. Maybe page 22 could make a last appearance there though
Todt? Nah. Palpatine has to be Mosley. Same height and similar facial features.
That's true... We saw Page 22 under the microscope... You must have some other good stuff there :)
Yeah, but Todt was sneaking around in a hooded jacket. I was thinking the "original" emperor
But wasn't Palpatine the only emperor?
He means from the original (and obviously superior) trilogy.
I'll have to try and think of something :D
There is Zero chance that Todt will work. He is seen, by everyone as biased towards Ferrari. He still sort of works for them (when things were starting to fall apart for Ferrari he appears in China - remember nobody goes unless they have to said Joe).
Every decision he makes will have to be tested for Ferrari bias.
It can't work.
Indeedy.
Ohhh... so Palpatine from 4-6? That WAS what I was referring to.
That's the spirit :D
You don't have a particle accelerator there do you? ;)
:D
Fraid not, mores the pity :D
Wind tunnel?
CFD software?
We haven't considered yet the LDM factor. The two are still at odds with each other about how he, Michael, and Ross were treated. So I don't think he'll be as bias towards Ferrari as we think he'll be.
And did Todt go to China at Ferrari's insistence? I think it was at Max's insistence. The FIA umbrella says it all.
Nope nothing so exciting. I have seen a few hydrogen powered cars about .. maybe page 22 could check that out if I find one
The thing is that you're thinking how Max and Todt will think. It's okay that's all water under the bridge.
The new head of the FIA needs to be whiter than white. The perception can't be "another Ferrari man" for the public. It doesn't kind of matter about the reality.
Excellent. Well you'll have to go in now :)
Right... Now I better go to work!
Bye Alex .. thank you :D
The way things stand, if Todt will be the only guy Max can trust enough so that he can retire, I'll take it. I don't think Max sees any other potential successors. I'd rather see Jean than another term with Max.
Who's Max' deputy is it Balestre?
Does it have to be someone from F1? Are there no other leaders from some other country's motorsport regulators?
Is he still around?!
Balestre died last year... it's some guy from Monaco that took over temporarily last year when Max went into hiding...
Oops, didn't know that. Morning Gavin
Just because I'm on the train doesn't mean I'm not able to check up on you from the train ;)
Morning. Go to work Jackie, you need to say goodbye and if your work was that nice, you know they've organised somthing for you. Leave on a high note - you never know, one day you'll end up working with them again ;)
Morning guys :)
Morning, Scott. :)
Big question: Remember the Alonso-Hamilton Mercedes Benz commercial? The song is "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better". But WHO sang the version Mercedes-Benz used in their commercial? It's not the original one.
Ahh... those were the days! Mika FTW ;)
VERY good commercial. I'm asking because I'm trying to get a copy of that song. But I've been trying for months to find that version, with no luck whatsoever. :(
Does anyone know?
I remember a boy and girl singing it, just don't know who.
:( Oh man... If anyone knows their names, that would be perfect. :D :D
Close up of Renault's double diffuser
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd4remhW0J8
According to Autosport TV, Ferrari are looking to focus on 2010 should their fortunes fail to improve. They're also going to debut their double diffuser at Barcelona.
I remember seeing that advert during the Hungary 2007 and just finding it completly hilarious considering what was going on at the race.
Just as well they should. But that indicates a lack of confidence in Maranello, doesn't it? LDM won't like that...
BAT race at Istanbul is done. Great 2nd place for me thanks to a couple of lucky safety cars. :D
Did something sneaky in FR. Buemi's value has gone significantly higher in the 3 days I had him, so I've let him go. At the same time, Kubica's value has plunged to 6.0, so I bought him back, with money to spare.
I think Kubica plus spare cash will be better value than Buemi with no spare cash. And if BMW are the team they are, surely they'll make big improvements in a dry Bahrain.
I'm happy with a BMW 1-3, it seems I may never win a race but at least we're top of the constructors :P
I'm sticking with who I have, thanks!
:D Hahaha! I like tinkering with my FR lineup. Who knows, doing this Wednesday morning trade may improve my fortunes. :)
You peddler you! "Honest J's 2nd hand driver yard"!
It sounds like a shop straight out of GTA. :D
Cmon, Kubica's had a bad start to the season, but we know he's not THIS bad. :)
I can't access it from here but it sounds like what you need is shazam.com
They have an ace application that can listen to a song and tell you who it's by. It's great for mobiles when you're in a shop and you hear a song or whatever.
I'm not sure how you can get the sound from the video to it. But you should be able to work it out.
*Rushes off to look*
At first glance, the results don't look too promising. All the singers are old people. Ah well, still worth a try, I guess.
aw crashed out of 3rd in batracer. For once i was happy with my pace even though i forgot to turn kers back on after monaco. Browsing batracer on nz phone is officially more difficult than browsing sidepodcast.
Morning guys and gals. Damn, I think that's my 3rd race in a row now on BATracer wherew I've had sucvh a good chance to do well and I've crashed out... it's really frustrating when I want to get points for Brawn as lou and myself's goal is to win the constructors... bah. :(
This, and Amy's quote are why I refuse to play cackracer anymore :(
and by nz i mean my. Turns out browsing sidepodcast is hard too.
Bah :(
Anyways I shall run off to uni and attempt to have a more productive day than my artistic doddling 3 hour joy I had yesterday :P
Finally - am ready to upload meandpage22. :D
:)
http://drop.io/meandpage22/asset/dsc02033-jpg
It's not much, but it's me for sure.
I wonder how Mr C would feel about his picture being the clutches of a Ferrari fan, though. :D
Wait till you see my Ferrari Store pics. Hopefully tonight I will have finished my guest article...
Ooooh. Speaking of which, I need to finish this week's article so I can drop it off to Keith. :) What are YOU writing about? A Ferrari catalogue? :P
That's excellent!
Thanks! ;)
Wait and see!
All right, all right. As a Ferrari fan, this should be good. :D
Next thing we know, Mr C will bug you to start a blog again. Hahaha!
I am going to start a blog - on F1 stats and analysis. But first I need to finish my guest post tonight and by then hopefully Scott will have given me feedback on what he wants for his graphs so I can get that done too :D
Oooh... sounds like a hangout spot for me and Alia. :D That leaves me and Steven Roy, then. ;)
And Amy, and Bassano.
Gavin, will you be doing FR-specific stats? Would be very helpful if you did. I'm not sure if Alia is still doing her points per million sheet. :)
I started on sunday (See dropio) and I would like feedback as it's a bit rough. Then I will make stats after each race for you guys ;)
You are more than welcome to contribute ;)
Great - I'll take a look at it when I get the time to. :D
Nah - stats aren't my thing, I'm more of a history buff. I do some writing for F1F already, as well as that one guest article I have here. Will probably have stuff up here from time to time. :)
Ah ok so you just meant that you liked the idea - that's cool, I have had a lot of positive responses about the blog... :D
and i am much more of a commenter than a contributor so i shall sit back and watch you all work :)
you know, you should try your hand at writing a guest article. perhaps something about heikki or f1 in australia. i think you'll be pretty good at it. ;)
Over on the Times Online blog, things seem to have taken a negative turn. There are the results of a poll on which driver you would sack (no prizes for guessing who tops this list), and now they're asking which team principals should get the boot.
Found via FakeKaz.
i am considering the comment me made about a guest post about the nonf1 side of albert park, i just need to get some more photos.
Ah, it's not THAT bad. Raikkonen and Hamilton scarily got a lot of votes, though. Am surprised some people want Vettel and Button gone (9 of them, to be exact), yet only 1 guy would want Robert out.
Piquet isn't a big suprise and I guess neither is Hekki after retiring on the first lap in the first two races.
I'm suprised people wanted Alonso sacked, not as many as Hamilton or Raikkonen but he still got some.
too many votes for heikki. How unexpected! Or not!
and unless he ups his game in the remaining races, these people will get what they want.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/massa-raikkonen-bahrain-2008-jpg
they really liked that non alcoholic bubble drink :-)
Ahh here we go, 3 hours of C++. joy.
Who even teaches C++ now? That's an ancient language. You're better off learning C#. Or even VB.NET!
pleased as punch :)
have you seen ollie's caption compo today?
The one with JB and VBH that you took? Yep. ;)
c++ is relevant. if you need processor specific (or performant) code, c++ is pretty code solution. photoshop would be slooooow in c#.
classic expression!
Oh come on, it isn't that bad. :P
Currently learning C++ and VB.Net :D
ahhh... didn't know that. good point. but we don't even use c++ anymore in the systems we develop for our clients.
VB.NET - good language to learn. ;)
out of curiosity, why vb.net? it's just about the only language in the world that has no relevance to any other. c++ and c# would likely be easier, no?
I really... really... dont like it :(
Just falls out of my mind instantly.
i dunno. it's a product of bill gates' twisted mind. coding vb.net is coding for the devil himself, just ask god...
Are you taking up a computer science course? or are you taking another course that just so happened to have this subject in the flowchart?
:D it's not the most relevant language out there, for sure. but it's easy to learn quickly, which I guess is why they're teaching it.
Computing in general so a bit of everything.
Well there wasn't much of a choice, I'm learning it Uni so it was decided for us. Two units, Object Oriented Programing we use C++ and Visual Programming using VB.Net
true enough.
i can understand why someone would learn old style VB, because you can fire up word of excel and code a macro. literally any MS product is a development environment and almost every pc has office installed.
vb.net however, is a little pointless.
You're using C++ to learn OOP? Hmmm... Not the best language for it, to be honest. C was always a procedural language, so C++ is not fully optimized for OOP. You're better off learning Java or C# for OOP.
I know the feeling, but I'm in my second year of doing it so it is starting to stick now. I'd offer to help you out but chances are you unit differs from mine.
Agreed. Have you heard of VSOP, though? MS wants to say goodbye to the macros. It uses VB.NET or C#.NET.
strange choice but i guess they have their reasoning.
agreed.
Really? lol well we learnt C++ in our first year and have just continued on with it in the OOP unit this year. I might bring this up with my tutor :D
I can also help you, Luke, the best I can. It's been a while since I developed, though - I've shifted away from that in the IT industry. Focusing on project management instead - it plays to my strengths better.
vsop?
VSOT, rather. Visual Studio Office Tools.
Arg. VSTO. Visual Studio Tools for Office.
Don't say that, I can't stand project management I should working on my project report right now and I'm on here. Mind you I think it is more the lecturer teaching the unit that is the problem.
Heehee. I can help you out there. What's your project about?
ahh, right. a nice idea but they're taking their sweet time about bringing the concepts in. also you still need visual studio to write them, no?
the beauty of VB was the ability to open word and code a solution, or open excel and do the same. very quick, very easy.
Is there a quote button is the doohickey? or am I just blind and can't see it?
yep, you do.
that's the big upside of going old-school. i think the reason they're shifting away is twofold - to promote VS (of course) and to reduce the security risk you have with macros.
there isn't one. to quote, just click the paragraph you wish to quote.
after hitting reply, of course.
We all chose our own project, mine was based on a website and content managment system I built over last summer. I was the only one in the class to use a project that was real, lol.
I'm supposed to be writing a 3000 word report on everything to do with the project and what we have been told to talk about doesn't come anywhere near 3000 words. Currently talking about the problems I encountered and what I did to solve them using risk management.
too complicated for people who need a quick fix. is the "record macro" option going to go away from office then?
Hehe thanks :D
Knowing MS, it just might for the next version. Not sure on that count, though.
Risk management... risk, impact, contingency, mitigation. :D
What else were you asked to talk about? Planning, time allocation are two that quickly come to mind.
Bad vb.net baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd
baaaaaaaaaaaaadddddddd
Sorry.
it's bbbbaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddd!!!!!
It's easier to tech people who have only ever used VB C# than VB.Net I reckon.
You're saying that if I've only used VB before, I'll find C# easier than VB.NET? Couldn't quite see through your baaaaaaads there. :P
teach that was...
See, based on the software development modules ive had so far 2 years into my course, VB I can do... Java I can do... C++ makes my frail little mind run about in little circles then explode in frustration, pick itself back up and fall over again from it confusing me so much :(
Well it's not quite that simple. But I think so... I mean VB.NET is quite different than VB.
that's why i got confused. :P
maybe it's because i studied them in college, but i didn't see vb.net as THAT different to vb.
That's what happens when a procedural language tries to pose as an OOP. :D They're discussing C++ in the context of OOP?
And I may be wrong of course. As I could already write C++ and VB when I looked at C# and VB.NET
And C# made more sense as a progression to me than VB.Net.
Yep, its a mixture of oop and using the language as a study of data structures.
In some code recently I saw somebody trying to emulate OOP in Perl.
Now that was confusing...
I agree on this count - C# is more of a progression. VB.NET was only really created to appease the VB developers.
Whatever was going through the head of guy who did that??
Data structures... okay... Where are you struggling?
With the whole 'everything' aspect of it. :D
I know all about risk managment, I had to give a 15 minute presentation on it, haha.
The report needs to explain what the project was, our solution, what our beneficiaries wanted from our the project, the risks, and then explaining our testing.
So you're basically at zero understanding right now? Yipes. Have you tried looking at online content? Maybe that would help.
No I'm just joking. We're studying queues, stacks and linked lists at the moment today and how the data is moved about and passed on and... stuff within c++ and despite bveing given sheets explaining, and looking at various bits of code provided in c++, it just frazzles my brain. It probably sounds very stupid oir simple to experienced users but I can easily say to you now that programming is by far my weakest area within my modules :(
And you need 3000 words? I think it's doable. You can discuss the problem, how you came to your solution, your project's objectives and goals. Then in discussing what your stakeholders want, you can go into how what they want and how you ensure you give what they want. Risk management and QA are self-explanatory. Maybe you can also discuss any project reviews you conducted with your stakeholders.
We've only just done that and I've been learning the language since last year. lol
Have been learning it for 9 weeks. :(
You know, Bassano might be onto something with the Darren Heath thing. I notice the "big picture" on the Beeb's site hasn't changed since Malaysia.
Queues and stacks are easy enough. Linked lists will require an understanding of pointers, right? I don't quite remember it now, but I remember that linked lists don't store values per se, but they store where these values are stored. Something like that.
Give it time. :D ;)
Sposed to be pic of the week, isn't it?
We had to learn C in 24 weeks. 12 weeks to discuss the basics, and another 12 to discuss the advanced stuff like linked lists, storages, and recursion.
I'm slowly starting to understand the actual process of them but it's actually implementing such events into c++ language and executing ti work without borland screaming errors at me left right and center. I'll get there eventually but it's just a low, slow process for me because as I've said, it;s not a strong area.
Malaysia big picture updated the Thursday after the Grand prix I believe... not sure.
Fair enough. Just seems like the current one has been there a looong time.
My suggestion to you: diagram it and metacode it. C and C++ shouldn't be too different in this aspect. It's not super-difficult, I'm sure you'll get to grips with it.
yeah that does help. I'm writing dpwn now onto paper how the queues and linked lists etc go on and what they do, they say people have their own styles of learning and mine is no doubt through seeing a visual version of whats supposed to happen :)
Although judging on my notes yesterday I uploaded to show being an A4 of drawings and doddles, perhaps I take the whole visual learning a tad too far... ;)
How spooky is this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8010219.stm
Rubens Man! He has come back from the dead to save F1 from evil! :D
Thing to remember with queues: first in, first out. If you're using an array to implement it, an extra variable or two to indicate where your queue starts and ends is key. :) Linked lists can be a tricky beast, but once you get how it works, the rest is a breeze.
Haha, talk of the devil!
Thats such a cool picture :)
Cheers, appreciate the advice and help. I'll get there eventually, just apologies you have to bear with my inexperience and naivety of C++ :)
Hahahaha! Darren must be lurking about here somewhere. :D
Agreed. Would've loved to see a bigger closeup of the car using the same shot, but brilliant nonetheless.
Nothing to apologize about, I'm sure you'll get there. :D
Now all we're waiting for is the Formula1.com video.
Now there's something I wish I could be doing now. :)
Yeah, its just everyone in my class is moaning about our C++ time constrained assignment on friday, only two of us want it done and out the way :D
The internet here is terrible the doohicky won't work :(
Time to get it done yourselves, perhaps? Time is ticking. ;)
You're still able to send comments, so it can't be too terrible.
I have one of them in 3 weeks, argh! :(
I feel old
Time to get started, then.
You can't be THAT old. Look at me - I'm advising college students on computer science units. And I think I'm still young and youthful!
I've already forgotten all that stuff !!
Age is just a number :)
Were'nt no interwebs when i was at uni !
Yeah, people are complaing about the theme of making our own operators.
I sent by going on the website, I have a signal strength of one, haha.
The interwebnet failing in this area. :(
Gone from a 24mb line to currently a 512kb line... Download speed testing comes up at 347kbps
Uh oh...
just received email from someone presenting the New York are F1 track project. not sure what to think about that - www.USGPJB.com
I am home from work and I bring you part 2 of "hilarious F1 songs".
This one tops the Heikki one, because it's in a language I can understand, and it made it on to the charts in Finland in 1998. Sadly it's not a full version, because I couldn't find one. There is also a Finnish version but I couldn't find that either.
11 years later, lyrics such as
Who is the lawn mowing fella?
Could be mister Fisichella!
are still as relevant as they were then.
Clearly, this song is also where Bernie got his medals idea.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/hakkisen-mika-mp3
Isn't there an economic crisis? They do have other race tracks in that country!
That's hilarious! "Here he comes Mika Mika Hakkinen!!"
ha!
*waves to bbc people reading spc*
are you short of ideas again?
How dare you ridicule us, it's mere coincedence our new F1 Reality TV show to get new drivers in F1 is called Side Pod Casting
and people vote with a ping?
Gaaah - interwebnet useless atm.
TTFN
As long everyone's license paying money can provide us with a ridiculously expensive machine that goes ping, then we can safely assume it will be another original idea from us.
:D
Who's doing this? :P
USGPJB - intriguing concept, but do they even have contact with Bernie? Doesn't look like it.
BBC, while you're here, can you promote Crofty please?
Will there be CBBC commentary?
:D :D
Also using 'I' instead of 'we' makes me think he doesn't really have a big team behind him, which he'll need if he's to make this work.
James Allen is currently unavailable.
Mr Croft shall stay on Radio 5 Live. We feel that our main commentator, Johnathon Legard, is an incredible talent. The rise in complaints at Mr Legard is just a case of bad timing.
yes... the timing and frequency of his constant interruptions
:-)
What can I say
race replay is on TV here right now, and I just had to mute it.
You're pony at having F1. Wot I fink is, we was much better last year ;)
We are pleased to announce that we shall soon be introducing an 'anti-mute' option to our Formula 1 coverage so all racing fans can truly appreciate the dedication, knowledge and expert analysis Mr Legard brings to the sport.
It can't be THAT bad... can it?
Tell you what: let's swap commentators for a race weekend. Wolf and I get Legard, you get Slater. Let's see how you feel after that. ;)
:D :D :D
That's just not fair. Don't tell me you get replays as well? We got it once at nothing o'clock Monday morning. :-(
Brawn, from Red Bull, from Red Bull, from Brawn.
Huh?
Outstanding insight !
yep, every Wednesday evening, ONE HD get points for this. Then they lose them for not playing qualifying this weekend, although rumour has it they will be showing it during the hour the IPL is on lunch.
One of Legards most annoying habits, he lists 5 or 6 cars in order, and they're all 'from' each other. I hate it.
Ha! Remember it vividly.
Ahhh! hehehe. :D Trust me, Legard is STILL better than Slater. Appreciate him, lest we take him from you and give you Slater instead. ;)
He just said 'Button, from Vettel'
we don't have to appreciate him. we have fivelive, we vote with our fingers...
..did i hear a ping?
we had few Slater gems in Star Sports last weekend:
a) Vettel overtaking Button and Slater shouts - Come on Mark, come on Mark !
b) quite a while after Massa's retirement onboard shot from Raikkonen's Ferrari and Slater says - here we have one of the Ferraris ... (trying hard to identify which one :-) )
I have started recording this so I can spam the drop.io with annoying mp3s. Don't say you don't love me.
An example of Slater at work
But as this is not actual race commentary, this isn't his worst yet.
Wonder what his birthday cards are like?
'dear Martin, Happy birthday, from Johnathon, from your commentary associate, from a BBC employee, from myself, from all my family, etc...'
Wolf! Do you have any Slater videos to share with the audience? ;)
Keep working on the F1 songs!
...here comes mika
with all due respect, and i've said this plenty of times... i don't care how bad other people's commentary teams are.
i don't want to be grateful that what we have is better than what we could have, i just want the best.
Just because you asked so nicely ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/we-love-you-hakkinen-mp3
"Wolf! Do you have any Slater videos to share with the audience?"
I don't but I have some very nasty mails and comments from Singapore based IP adrdresses after my last post on the Star SPorts coverage ... made me think twice if I really need that sort of stress added to my life ...
sometimes having the best isn't really possible. i mean, you have the BEST coverage in the world right now, full stop. there's a good chance that your complaints with legard are common with all other commentators. i've watched the bbc replays with his commentary, and he doesn't seem all that bad - he's pretty good, to be honest.
What's with the nasty emails? What did they say? You can just quietly drop.io a clip or two, to prove the point.
Perhaps McLaren should play this to build up morale !
agreed. but 5live coverage is better than the tv commentary right now, so the target is well within reach. we're not asking for the impossible by any stretch.
if we just settled for second best (or in this case 18th best), we'd have nothing to say.
It's like saying, "Well, you know, Piquet is better than Ide so he'll do."
agreed.
ooooo that hurts.
:D
But Legard is no Piquet - he's more of a Massa, to me. Hard worker, has some flaws, but still a good package all in all.
"What’s with the nasty emails? What did they say? "
well, after my first serious post on Star Sports back in September 08 I received comment from someone calling himself "a good friend of Steve Slater" , still OK although obviously not happy with my views
this time some people made an effort to look up some personal info in me, a bit scary I must say. I had to ban whole bunch of Singapore IP addresses from commenting ...
Full of win, that comment!
whaaaaaaaaaaat? ok, that's just freaky. apparently, some people have never heard of Legard or Croft's work. ;)
Where's ITV's response to BBC, by the way?
oh god I just had a FROM overload
it went into moderation, you'll have to refresh... how did you know they responded?
:D
that is very worrying wolf!
*spotlight appears on gavin*
Hehehe.
;)
Off for dinner then law lecture. See you guys this evening.
"that is very worrying wolf!"
to tell the truth I thought at that moment about shutting down the blog and living in peace. now I think about how to make my voice about the ESPN Star Sports lousy coverage heard even more :-)
it's worrying on a lot of levels.
1. they hate you so much that they'd stalk you like that
2. they love slater so much they'd stoop down to that.
good on ya!
I just watched Sutil crash again. :(
see ya lukeh.
It's painful, but nowhere near as painful as when Kimi took him out through no fault of his own.
That said, be careful, Wolf. ;) You're one of the few voices of F1 blogging out here in the Far East.
nice comment from kimi:
"Finally I want to say that I’m glad that Sebastian won the Chinese GP. He’s a nice guy and he drove a great race. He deserved this success."
Watching him try to run away is painful. Someone tell that man never to run on camera.
good on him! see, he doesn't hate ALL German hotshoes. :D
There is a lot of pictures of those two together, I think they get on very well. But how could anyone not get on with Seb?
hehe. it's a good column all round, that one. well worth a read.
Hi everyone, sorry I missed the science meet up, work called me back in at the last moment so I missed out :-(
Sounds like everyone had fun albeit not in the museum, i suppose the British GP will be the next chance for all to meet up? Maybe after friday practice we could go for a pint? I live local etc and know a few haunts lol
I've just been reading up on the 2009 'For Sure' championship..Massa's clearly out in front http://www.f1network.net/boards/read/s169.htm?211,10395138
Tost on Buemi:
"In China he did a good job. In really difficult circumstances, he didn't make a major mistake. Once he did touch Sebastian Vettel, but touching a Red Bull car is all part of the education process with Toro Rosso! If he goes on to win a race after doing this then it's fine."
Vettel should know. ;) I think his karma pulled through for him there. Otherwise, he should've been out of the race already, just like the last time.
also, why's bernie pulling out all the stops this weekend?
"The Ecclestone Heritage Collection will be on display throughout the Grand Prix in the F1 Village and Vending Area and all spectators are invited to view the collection close-up at no extra charge."
It was nearly as batty as when he ran from his car in Canada last year
"Just because you've done 54 laps doesn't mean you're going to do 56"
no worries sir. we did our best to make sure you hadn't gone missing.
you can certainly organise a meetup, but we can't afford to go :(
goodwood is likely to be the next one i think?
it actually looks like a really neat collection. i would've loved to see the fan car up close. :D
Ah no that's a shame, well it's purely speculation but my G/f's been promised some corporate tickets from Vodafone (she works at HQ) so we may have 2 spare tickets left for sale.
What do people think of Red Bull and Renault approaching the FIA before the season to question the use of a double diffuser? FIA apparently said no it wasn't whereas clearly now the with the Brawn, Toyota, Williams it is....
Maybe Flabbio blah blah blah isn't 100% being out of order with his complaining
Sorry if discussed already, i'm a few days behind! lol
As Clive said at F1 Insight, only the Court of Appeal can have the final say. Anything Max or Charlie says is only an opinion. Like in a court case, only the jury can decide. Anything your lawyer will tell you is only an opinion.
Surely though the FIA could sort this stuff out before the season. They knew it was coming.
That's where they can indeed make an improvement. Perhaps there should be a formal petition process available to the teams.
It'll be really tight though if the FIA said to Red Bull, Renault that type of diffuser wasn't legal whereas now they do...
I'm really interested to see the exact details of what technical clarification RBR and Renault asked for, maybe they were too vague for the FIA to understand?
Then again, if this were available, we'd probably be seeing Ferrari and McLaren at the front as always. They genuinely got caught out, for once.
Hi everyone.
Yup, or perhaps their dimensions were a bit off, which could've made the difference.
hey chris!
How can the tabloids run stuff like this
The first time? That picture is clearly rather old.
vettel in late switch to bmw shocka?
He looks about 12!
Sebastian Button aging backwards?
love that headline! :D Nice to see he's learned from Schumi how to keep his private life private.
how about the commentary suggestion halfway down this page
I quote "How about they just hand the job to the crew at sidepodcast :):)
They are awsome :)"
Give it a month, he'll be the tabloids new sweetheart.
yikes!
Looking at the driver quotes for Bahrain over on Formula1.com, Piquet is the only driver not looking foward to racing around the circuit this weekend.
For anyone taking part in the Sofa F1 predictions championship, China's results are now in:
http://bit.ly/sofaf1
That would be...... interesting!
before i look, answer me this... am i still ahead of you?
A shambles! :)
Overall, yes.
w00t! brb...
I wouldn't go that far!
I think it's a German thing, they seem to like and be able to keep their private lives private.
edited podcasting goodness from christine:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/22/sidepodchat-of-people-parks-and-picnics/
we don't pay her enough.
I like that my sidepodsleep patterns are archived in podcast format forever haha
Balls. I fell asleep with last.fm running on my iPhone last night and now I have an unwanted 6 hours worth of music on my account.
Most, but not all. :D
Heidfeld is also good in this, as is Nico to some extent.
Ralf Schumacher, though, was frequent tabloid fodder for years.
twas just alonso.
"Nelson will have the new diffuser in time for Bahrain. It simply wasn't possible to make two in time for China last weekend, but I think that we did a great job to get one out to China"
I think what he meant to say was
This one's for Amy ;)
I would like to call them "North Island" and "South Island' :D
So would I ;)
Typical of NZ to forget to file the paperwork though!
we can rectify that with the donate button
nice plug
Have dropioed a pic to meandpage22
Oooh, that's a good one :)
You went to work!
Yep
Nice one, Jackie!
Oooh, lab jackets. Reminds me of Brainiac. :D
Has this been posted here?
A twit from DoningtonF1 to answer the question of where the rumors came from.
From JA:
Erm, why would you like dry heat? That means there's no wind to cool you down from the heat... :-/
I like 40 degree Melbourne a lot more than 40 degree Singapore, maybe thats what he means? Humidity is horrible.
Liking Joe's line of thought:
:D
Humidity. You can cool down easier and breathe easier in a dry heat.
Oh, I guess we interpret it differently. I was thinking dry heat meant no wind...
Fair enough.
As much as I quite like 40 degree Melbourne, I didn't like this
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/hotttttt-jpg
46?!?!
It's amazing how much hotter 46 feels than 40. I am very pleased my flat has aircon.
Wait, so you're saying that you like it being 40 degrees?
46 is scorching!
I do! It's about my limit though, I prefer the mid 30s. Certainly beats "I never get above 25" New Zealand
And it certainly beats "Windy Wellington" :(
Wow, I can't stand it when it gets over 28-30. I know, I know, I'm definately living in the wrong country. It's nice at the moment, about 15-16 outside.
Just watching AutosportTV, apparently Stefano Domenicali has said if Ferrari's results don't improve soon they will shift their efforts to 2010. makes sense I suppose but it's surprising to hear them admit it.
I quite like winter as well because I'm a fan of blankets + cups of tea, so it's nice to live in a place that has well defined seasons :)
I agree with that theory I guess, I just wish that each season was perhaps 5 degrees colder on average. That would be great imo.
do you want some of my snow?
I'd quite like to come visit your part of the world, but I think it's a wee bit too chilly for me. I like snow, but I hate driving on it.
i've never even seen snow in my entire life, never mind drive on it. :D
When I was 15 I had a student music teacher from somewhere in Africa (Uganda I believe). One day it started snowing, and he walked outside and just stood there with his arms outstretched staring into the sky with the biggest smile on his face. It was amazing for something we see every year to be so awe-inspiring to someone.
I'd love to feel what your Ugandan friend felt. :)
I've seen the same reaction in a Canadian setting foot in the ocean for the first time. It made me realise how lucky I am to have always lived on the coast.
What you want is about 6" of new snow and having to drive to work in a 500bhp car with no traction control. 8O
Took ages to get the crease out of the drivers seat.
Alright mates, what's the good word?
You and me both.
I used to work with a load of people from India. Exactly the same responce from them. They used to come over and feel good because they had bought a thick jumper. I used to tell them to have the afternoon off and to go coat shopping. One of them came back with the biggest coat I have ever seen. He couldn't bring his arms down by his side. :D Pretty much had to go through doors sideways.
ICE CREAM VAN!!!!!
McLaren have ANOTHER new front wing arrangement for Bahrain. Looks like a new central part of the bottom element underneath the nose and the obvious addition of the overwings, or whatever they're called.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_90PCU-F_lM
Haha.
My Grandad told me about a winter when he was young where there was 6ft of snow and people were out digging trenches to front doors so people could get out. Can't see that happening in a long time. Not until the Gulf Stream shuts down anyway.
Note a subtle change in the title ;)
Haha!
SIX planes! That's nuts! :O Are they overcomplicating things?
Hahaha, brilliant!
6 element front wing?! Jesus!
McLaren have certainly pushed the boat out there.
IT people? That's just an awesome story. :D
They're certainly the busiest team on the grid update wise, aren't they?
woah, thank you jackie!
Maximizing their manufacturing speed. Also known as throwing money at the problem.
But I find it very odd that for a car whose problems mostly lie at the rear, they are making a LOT of updates on the front of the car.
They're associated with John McCain now, apparently. :D
Perhaps with the double diffuser, that's helped stabilise the rear so their focus is now on the front.
Good point. They did set an ambitious target of winning in Spain, so they're pushing triple-time to make sure they have a shot at doing it.
I remember hearing somewhere that they were having problems with the rear because of how the air was getting there from the front. Not sure how true it is but it would explain all the new front wing updates.
Yup. He was so happy with his coat though. It was only september. :D
Awww, bless him! A shame he'll never get to use it back home, though. :D
At least they're "throwing money at the problem" as you put it and it's actually working. The car has improved quite a bit since Melbourne.
He's moved over here with his family.
They came over when the flights were cheapest. December 25th.
He thought he was going to get a taxi from Norwich to Heathrow... Riiiiight.
Told him to go buy coats for his family as well. His wife came over wearing a Sari
BAT-related - is this our first wet session of the season?
I think so - and It's Silverstone. :D
A sari in winter is... unbearable, I think.
I guess that's the equivalent of Brits going to Australia in the middle of summer and taking a couple of jumpers 'just in case'.
:D It's nice to dream...
Home race as well for me :D
I imagine it if for a lot of us actually
I did have to explain christmas...
To be fair, the next year he was well into it. Christmas tree, cards, presents - was really odd to see.
His wife even made turkey curry for christmas dinner...
Only for 6 of us actually.
Now that's called assimilating a culture! :)
*slurps on a lemon and lime calippo*
Yum.
LOOK LOOK LOOOOOK!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74698
Wow! Out of the blue or what?! Just hope it won't be 1997 all over again.
Ooh just remembered, must hop onto Race Pro and see if that update is available.
Them plus Team USF1GPE will make 12 teams - 24 cars. When was the last time we saw that?!
But the cynic in me says that Lola may have come in a bit too late in the day. If they're only assessing things now, how much time will they have to design the car?
Just been reading that.
Not sure what to think. Lola were never exactly great...
Wow, where did that come from??!
could they be sponsored by cherry cola?
Colalola?
Mastercard? :D
Got a couple more news stories for ya.

Certainly not a slow news day today!
I have a comment full of news links in moderation. Be a sport, would ya? :)
The only successful Lola chassis in F1 that I can think of was the Honda RA300 in 1967...
if they win, will they drink champagne and dance all night?
what if i say, no?
Ah, Stuart would love that.
I reckon Lola could pull it off this time, actually. Since 1997, they've produced some good cars. I'm thinking - F3000 chassis, first A1GP car, a few Le Mans prototypes and the Champ Car chassis up until 2007. They certainly know how to make decent race cars, so I think they'll have learnt they're lesson and should they go ahead with it, produce something competitive yet beautiful at the same time.
I'll cry?
damn. done.
Mmm, I have Ben and Jerry's :D
Emotional blackmail. Must remember that one :)
;)
*falls in* Afternoon all. Glad to see things are quiet!
"Get me a panda for my birthday or I'll cry" ;)
i'm wasted her, i really am.
*here
Far from it really. Lola just announced they're taking a look at entering F1 in 2010 and we're just starting to recover from the suprise of it all.
ahh, 560 posts by 3pm. an average wednesday then ;)
Don't worry, I'm on the same page as you.
So for someone who knows no history, why is this important?
Will I ever spend a night on sidepodcast and NOT get a song stuck in my head?
Ah, well that explains it all. I was wondering what was going on. Could be um interesting?
And thats a matter of opinion. :P
next year we could have a mixed up muddled up shook up grid except for lola.
Lola attempted to enter F1 in 1997 under Eric Broadley, but from what I can recall, the investors in the team wanted the car up and running immeadietly, so the car had virtually no wind tunnel testing and when they turned up in Melbourne, it was some 14 seconds off pole. By Brazil, all the sponsors including title sponsor Mastercard pulled out and Lola as an F1 team was done.
I guess it's important because firstly it's possibly another team on the grid making it 24 cars and secondly because everyone will be watching them closely to see if they flop again. Although looking at what they've created and designed since then, I'd say they're in much better shape and should know what they're doing.
Oh and whilst watching qualifing on the iplayer I had visions of Dr Mario in suspenders when he appeared on the screen. I'm scarred for life now!
sounds like we need another forgotten f1 teams mini-series...
Hehehe.
I heard stories about Dr Mario in a Singapore nightclub that scarred me for life
My work here is done. ;)
Oh do tell. :D
Reading the Lola story properly, it looks like they're considering Cosworth engines.
And this part of the story backs up what I was saying earlier:
"It has been heavily involved in single-seater production in the past decade, building chassis for a wide range of categories including the defunct Champ Car World Series, Formula 3, A1GP, F3000 and Formula Nippon.
The company also has recent experience of developing customer LMP1 and LMP2 machinery for top-line sportscar racing, with the Prodrive-run Lola Aston Martin project claiming a debut victory in the Barcelona Le Mans Series race earlier this month.
The facilities that Lola has built up for such activities in recent years means that it already has a base that could easily be adapted to develop an F1 car."
No surprise there, then. :)
Dammit! My teammate was the first Renault to score in BATracer...
Apparently he reeeeally likes dirty dancing, and the reality of seeing it is apparently much worse than anything you could imagine.
It's the only reasonable option for a new team now. 5 million dollars (engines and gearboxes) is a bargain to get an F1 team started.
complete waste of time unless they're mandatory for all teams.
in the words of frank williams "it was underpowered and underdeveloped when we had it and now all the engineers who designed and built have moved on."
at least he said something along those lines. basically it's rubbish.
you could still run faster.
Wouldn't be forever though. The engine freeze ends in 2011 (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong) so chances are you'll see a couple of new engine suppliers move in.
Apparently he reeeeally likes dirty dancing, and the reality of seeing it is apparently much worse than anything you could imagine.
Now imagine it in the pink suspenders.
*shudders*
there's no one left there to design/develop/build a new engine is there? the talent moved elsewhere. so far as i can see, cosworth is little more than a name nowadays.
Paintshop pro time!
Volkswagen? Porsche? Audi? I know they said they wouldn't get involved in F1 until the cost issues are sorted (or something like that), and with this budget cap coming in, it could change their minds.
oh i see. assumed you meant cossy would create something new.
Hmm strangely enough, every time Lola get involved in F1 they always underachieve. They won a couple of times with the 'Hondolas' of the late 60's. They did get involved with other teams in a technical partner kind of role and there was the ill-fated 1997 campaign. Very strange that the company has had so much success in all other forms of racing yet they have never really cracked F1?
Aston Martin? If they came back, I know what team I'd be supporting. Even if they were only making engines, I'd be supporting whoever ised them.
VAG are having too much success in sportscars and they don't have a big enough budget to compete in both...
Ask David Richards if he plans to bring the name back. ;)
Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Hahahahahahahahahahahha!
Audi are only doing Le Mans now though.
I'm off, night chaps.
David Richards was quoted in CAR magazine as saying that he wants to bring Prodrive into F1...
Prodrive powered by Aston Martin?
He said when Prodrive had the 11th spot on the grid that he had no intention of including Aston Martin in the team at all.
Nor Subaru, I think.
see ya sean.
Afternoon guys. How're we all?
Didn't think he'd do it but my feedback was approved :D

LEGEND! :D
james allen may be some things... he is not one of those though.
I don't think JA gets it though... does he? ;)
all good. yourself?
not a clue?
That's what makes it better :D
Not bad. Just spent 3 hours in town looking for a birthday present for one of my housemates, so am a little tired.
This! WD Bass!
what did you find?
A necklace (she doesn't wear much jewlery, so I had to find something plain)
and you didn't think to live comment it?
;)
Well...no. Anyway, did anyone see the news on the ITV site about Lola possibly coming back?
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=45652&PO=45652
In a strange way, I'm anxious to see the China voiceover massacre now to get some quips in on that one, if he dares!
We saw it on Autosport. :D
Ah, ok. Sorry, I haven't looked on the comments since about 2:30. Didn't see anything then.
The Get Legard off the BBC F1 Commentary petition has risen to a mighty... 7 signatures :(
Why do online petitions exist? I don't think I've ever signed one.
Me neither. Very few bother reading them.
Did people ever bother taking notice of old fashioned paper ones either?
Other than the lola talk, imaging Dr Mario in pink suspenders dirty dancing....
wait, what?
I am in a good mood since my TV Guide updated and now they're showing qualifying :D Almost 3 hours late, but at least it's on :D
3 hours?! It's Wednesday! thats 3 days late :D
howdy all :)
how is everyone today?
You can picture it already can't you. :D
Not by choice!
Hey Jon
howdy :)
Unfortunately, yes.
*waves*
afternoon everyone :)
Lukeh! How are ya?
Hey Lukeh, how's the 360?
Afternoon!
I'm good! I had a talk with my lecturer about C++ and showed her the diagrams I'd been writing up based on the stuff I mentioned this morning and it's on a very good track apparently so thats good, and law lecture was suerprisingly interesting so a good day considering :)
sitting on the floor in a box/coffin waiting for Mr UPS to take it on holiday :(
but did you show her Mario Flanders?
or Rubens Man?
No my... notes... were at home. :(
Awww, I'll have a moment of silence for it.
Mine and Flibsters work here is done for sure then. Unless of course he does the mock up in psp. :D
Me? ;)
LO :D
how did the day go jackie?
Kinda sad and a bit awkward for everyone really but I got a beatiful bunch of flowers amonst other stuff
sent a picture of flowers to drop.io
totally worth going in for ;)
I suppose :D .. and the men in white coats got hold of page 22
:D
Any word on how Scott got on with his interview?
so pretty!
Chris - load my setup now, I've converted it for qualifying.
Thanks.
Afternoon all. Amazing how I didn't choke when I saw Lola were to return possibly, then shrugged it off as GMM crap, then did choke when I found out it wasn't.
And thanks for the blog post mention ;)
I share a birthday with Tom Walkinshaw, how cool is that?
I think we all did!
I just read this now... what the hell? Talk about a surprise. If they did come back are we all expecting them to be a miserable failure once again?
it's gotta be better than sharing it with Flav, like I do
It went very well, thanks. An informal 30 minute chat about me, what I knew about the company, an example of good customer service I'd given and bad service I'd received and what I could bring to the company.
I'll know on Friday if I've got a second interview. :)
I've got a feeling they won't be a failure. As I've mentioned already today, look at what they've done between 1997 and now - a lot.
Fingers crossed for you
Aww, fanx much :)
Ditto ;)
Hmm, if they have already started a '10 car then maybe be as good as Force India
Uhoh .. poor Amy, you have my sympathy :D .. I share mine with Jody Scheckter
Well, they've said they're considering it at the moment, so personally I wouldn't have thought they'd have started anything already. But then look at the Aston LMP1 car. That went from initial drawing to victory first time out in a matter of months.
LMP is one thing, F1 quite another. Since they also have zero exposure to F1 in the last decade, they'll have an awful lot of catching up to do.
Christijan Albers. Beat that.
Exactly. Most teams right now will have a few staff designing stuff for 2010 already.
A1GP? Champ Car? Formula Nippon? F3? They haven't been out of the single seater loop completely.
Wonder who shares it with Franck .. that must get some brownie points
Ah, but A1GP/Champ Car/Formula Nippon are all single make series, and Dallara have won 95% of the races, so their F3 experience isnt that great either
'cept for christine and i, who have no clue who they are. although i am convinced their livery will be pink.
:O You don't know Lola?!
no.
Should go on F1 Rejects then.
Well that says it all about them in that one sentance ;)
Hence my earlier question.
She was a showgirl
This will be the big news in their next podcast, for sure. :D
At the Copa, Copacabana... :D
now that lola i am aware of ;)
And, of course L-O-L-A Lola, too.
A quick wikipedia check claimed that they were at one race in 1997, where they didn't qualify. Then, they ran out of money!
Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets
ok. so why does anyone give a s...?
cos it was on autosport.
turns out i know plenty of lolas :D
No idea.
Only because their backers forced them to rush the car. They went to Melbourne with virtually no wind tunnel testing and no track testing at all.
Because they didn't just miss the cut by a tenth or two - they missed it by 14, FOURTEEN seconds. They were THAT horrible.
Not to mention they had Mastercard branding all over.
Cause there's nothing else newsworthy?
2 words. Massive disaster.
i understand that because it's on autosport, it makes the story factual. what i don't get is why anyone is excited that a team from loserville may make a comeback?
And this was Lola's single failure in motorsport. And it was their biggest, too - it almost drove them to bankruptcy.
Lola's an intergral part of motorsport. They've been around for some 50 years and just about done every form of well-known motorsport in the world. Well, except NASCAR, I think.
i just liked looking at their car on the F1 97 game. It was like a portable rainbow :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_Cars
May become the next Minardi?
And this is the only arm of motorsport where they failed - and boy did they fail! They failed spectacularly.
still never heard of 'em.
Change well-known, to liked, and you wouldn't need the NASCAR bit
we only just got rid of them.
Minardi whooped them in that single race weekend.
I thought Toro Rosso had Minardi DN.... Best not go there
You not like the underdog-esque teams?
World famous name. Mainly in GT racing though.
depends if we'll get the will-they-won't-they arrive at the next gp and have the trucks even left the factory yet, stories?
To be fair Lola weren't an underdog, the only under they were was under a rock in terms of their car, yeesh.
hold on. are these the muppets who are having an alonso-esque toy/pram throwing competition with dave richards over le mans naming?
Lukeh, fire up the photoshop :D
After prating around on rFactor, I can confirm that F1 cars are rubbish at rallycross.
nakajima says "no".
Strangely enough, looking at my photoshop folder, I already have a previous photoshop of Dave Richards in a pram...
What a horrible messed up sentence.
Remember, young driver testing is excluded from the ban. So if the teams really wanted to, they would test new talent. It’s just that after Kubica and Vettel (and possibly even Buemi), we’ve probably already gathered the next set of F1 stars - it should be more than enough to cover us for a decade. {Comment #41}
Unfortunately, they only get three days a year per team and they're after the season. Stupid FIA rule change :(
:D :D :D .. can we see it?
jon says no too.
F1 Rallycross cars *wonders*
I honestly cant remember why I made this but...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/pramdave-png
Thats them.
Hahahaha
It just needs a muppet!
Lola, wow. Read about that earlier. They say they're considering it, but they also say they've got people already in place for the project, so from a few lines, it sounds like they're 65% or so sure of doing it. Luke, they weren't in F1 97, well not mine anyway. It even says in my manual that they were taken out out of it.
Really? I have a vivid memory of them being there.... huh. Thats strange... i'm going mad in my old age of 20.
Anyone heard from Scott Woodwiss yet? He had a job interview today...
Erm, dude - I've been in the comments all afternoon. ;)
I’m not sure if Alia is still doing her points per million sheet {Comment #256}
I don't remember doing one at any point - I think that was Christine. Oh well, I could do that if you like :)
Evening all. I am going to miss the quiz tonight as I am just about to head out into the real world. And I haven't had time to have my injections either.
Interesting item in Autosport. Christian Horner taking the opportunity to start negotiations with Renault and potentially other engine suppliers while the results are good. I wonder how much Renault are prepared to drop to keep a winning team on board. I didn't think Horner was savvy enough to pull this.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74701
Best of luck to all in the quiz.
Ah - right when my Danish lesson started. How did your interview go?
Real? World? pah, such a concept does not exist
Very well thanks :)
Good stuff. Any feedback on the graphs? I was thinking to ape your 'red fades into charcoal on white font' look?
That's a shame .. hope you have fun
Yeah, they look alright. Could you try line graphs, but with points on them?
For all of them?
Yep, but just do the averages from both of them.
After each round.
Fussy blogger :D
I think we may be reaching the point where there is too much fakeF1 on twitter. It was a lot funnier when it wasn't so constant.
Right, time to write another blog post me thinks.
Evening all. :) A few words on Mike Gascoyne:
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/12377/900/ - Apparently he's hoping for a future role at the BBC (although a GMM story sourcing The Daily Mail isn't all that convincing.)
James Allen says he's looking for a job at Ferrari which is more likely: Gazza likes doing media work, but he was really in China to see if he could win over any of the F1 teams, who might like to employ him. http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/04/22/gascoyne-applies-for-job-at-ferrari/
Unless you mean.......nope. Can't think of any other 97 looking anything like that livery. And it came out in September anyway.
MG at Ferrari? Hmm. Would it work though?
GMM and the Daily Mail? Wow... that's quite a combination. Although I do hope it';s true.
I think the novelty will wear off.
Mind you, if Mike did get a job at Ferrari, he'd be able to give the BBC loads of insider info :D
I really liked Mike in place of EJ - Partially because EJ winds me up, partially because Mike actually knows what he's talking about. Plus, he was funny.
and so little!
Yeah, The Beeb should definately keep him on.
Adam Carroll was just on Irish radio, well a clip was. Thought he'd fallen off the face of the F1 world since 2007. Anyway, he basically said:
"I have the right people behind me, and with them I can go to either IRL or F1. I'm talking to 2 of the 3 F1 teams coming next year, so we'll see."
Not much, but 2 things from that:
1. USF1 should go for all-American, but if they don't, they'll want experience, so that rules Adam out.
2. USF1, Lola......who else could there be?
I'd love nothing more than seeing an Irish guy racing in F1 again.
He is a realy Norfolk Pixie. :D
*wanders back in* I liked Mike. Far more interesting than Eddie.
If Carroll impresses in IRL, I reckon USF1 will look at scooping him up.
Eddie's all so serious and "Me me me me me" all the time.
Didn't know this about the F1 97 game either:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_1_97#Alcohol_and_tobacco_related_sponsors
Lola aren't listed among the teams Luke......I don't know what you're on about. :P
Don't worry about it, I don't know what I'm on about either :(
Maybe they were in the bios pages? I know Nigel Mansell was listed in the Drivers info page on TOCA 2 but wasn't actually in game.
I'll have a root for the manual this evening, I'm certain it said about them being excluded, but nothing else.
I just liked it when Mike asked a guest a question and he stepped right up to them to do it. Plus he's more a proper height.
I'm finally watching the DC + Brundle gridwalk, I love it :D
Just asked James what he thinks of both Lola and Carroll in F1.
Autosport have just put an article up on Lola's history in F1...
It's not good reading. :D
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74703
When I was 15 I had a student music teacher from somewhere in Africa (Uganda I believe). One day it started snowing, and he walked outside and just stood there with his arms outstretched staring into the sky with the biggest smile on his face. It was amazing for something we see every year to be so awe-inspiring to someone. {Comment #503}
My best friend from university got very, very excited when she saw snow in December of her first year. She was from Singapore and had never seen the white stuff before. Her (British) room-mates didn't understand what all the fuss was about.
Remembering that kept me cheerful when everyone around me was moaning about snow clogging up the streets in January. It's not that common an occurrence in the middle of England...
ICE CREAM VAN!!!!! {Comment #510}
I had my first proper ice cream of the spring at the weekend. My local branch of Thornton's started selling ice-creams... ...but they'd not got any supplies of chocolate sauce or fudge sticks. So I ended up with chocolate ice cream with white chocolate... ...buttons on top.
What time is the quiz again? 8pm, isn't it?
If USF1 have got the space in 2010 like we all think, then that only leaves 1 more space left with 7?8? (aledgily) other teams, Lola aren't going to be faffing about here, they're announcing now because they want that space!
8:30. For the newbies
http://www.pitlanefanatic.co.uk
and in the chat section, watch out for me, Mr. Roy ain't doing it so im aiming for a win
i'm sick this week, so beating me doesn't count.
I beat you all the time, so that never matters ;)
Bernie said there's 3 new teams coming next season, so effectively there's 1 place left.
are you sure bernie said that?
Yeah he did!
BBC ran a story on it. He said there would be 3 new teams on the grid, and that there were 3 serious bids for it but loads of people interested.
when?
He claimed that, even though it breaks the FIA rules on how many cars can enter each race.
Hold on, lemme find it.
The engine freeze ends in 2011 (I think, someone correct me if I’m wrong) {Comment #585}
It's supposed to be a five-year sorbet, so it ends at the end of 2012. However, there have been rumours of negotiations to end it earlier, including a possibility that budget-capped teams may have more freedom on the engine.
Ooh just as well we also own the .co.uk site LOL Yes its 8.30 pm and not having heard from Jolly it might be Maverick who's hosting
Was it not after Honda had pulled out, so the total number would be 24?
maybe mclaren will be banned ;)
That's true.
When is d-day for Mclaren anyways, next week?
Think its the 28th?
I thought it was the 29th
lemme check
Scott.
They're done. Where shall I send them to? droppio?
christine says 29th.
yup.
Confirmed it is the 29th
Done. Enjoy ;)
Christijan Albers. Beat that. {Comment #669}
If it's "same day of the year" and not a day/month/year match, I was born on the same day of the year as Martin Donnelly, Elio de Angelis, Didier Pironi, Lella Lombardi and Renato Pirrochi.
Of course, RG, you do have the counter-defence that you and Christijan Albers were born on the same day of the year as Frank Williams and Dick Gibson...
Frank Williams, finally someone better to boast about than Albers. Thanks Alia
Tiff Needell :-(
Albers rules, don't.......don't go dissin'.
Albers does rule, but Sir Frank is on a different level
Oooh, Antonio Ascari.
Yeah... he pioneered the 'drive off with the hose attached' move, remember?
where are you guys lookin, BTW?
Oh wait.... he died on my birthday. That's less good.
Wikipedia
Was he the Ralf Schumacher of the 50s?
'vettel on malaysia' anecdote from jonny noble:
"For him, the most amazing part of the weekend had been when a bead of sweat on his forehead had flung off onto the inside of his visor."
"As he braked for the next corner, the G forces took this bead of sweat and drifted it upwards to the top of his visor, before it moved sharp right as he turned hard left on the track. He then kept watching it move about the inside of his helmet for the whole lap."
[subs linky]
lovely ;)
Really? I have a vivid memory of them being there…. huh. Thats strange… i’m going mad in my old age of 20.
Unless you mean…….nope. Can’t think of any other 97 looking anything like that livery. And it came out in September anyway. {Comment #739}
Computer games based on the 1997 season that included Lola (according to Wikipedia)
F-1 World Grand Prix (though this only came out on the Nintendo 64)
Computer games based on 1997 that Wikipedia doesn't have a page for:
F1 Manager Pro
Prost Grand Prix
Don't know if this helps narrow it down at all...
Found a little quiz:
http://www.sporcle.com/games/f1grand_prixs.php
Will answer in a minute, looks too easy.
Just want to say a big thanks Journeyer for pointing me in the right direction with my report, up to 2000 words only 1000 to go :D
Is this my kind of easy? or Steven Roy's kind of eaasy?
I'm pretty sure F1 WGP didn't have Lola.
Evenin' All...
What's going on here then?
I had a difficult day today when some body said to me, "Alex... You know this thing isn't working..." I looked in to it... Pinged the server... No response... Phoned somebody... "What's happened to my server?"
The thing you don't want to hear from your network engineer at this point is: "Oh so that was your server. Yeah we've deleted it."
That might be it, I played it on my nephews n64 at the time.
Your kind of easy
i read fourstar's tweet and thought... that's gonna ruin somebody's day!
soz sir.
I can't play in the quiz because the site won't let me register :(
Nope, Lola were definitely not in F1 WGP I'm afraid
I haven't even read that yet. He had time to tweet! Blimey!
At one point I had one phone on each ear and fourstar was waving a receiver at me saying, "this guy wants to talk to you".
Then where the hell did I see it? I can even picture seeing it all pixelated... thisis really confusing me. Unless what im remembering is a really early screenshot of one of the games... but still. :/
did you manage to build a new one/recover the old one?
Tiff Needell :-( {Comment #791}
Not to mention you also share a birthday with Alex Soier-Roig.
In case you're wondering, I'm using ChicaneF1 to figure out all these birthdays.
Luckily they had made a backup. But I needed to persuade the guy to restore the database for me without having received any money from us. It was an external vendor. Somebody internally had decided we didn't need to pay them any more. So he wasn't terribly convinced that we were good for it.
Otherwise I would still be there rewriting it.
My comment about giving Gavin a more exotic name to associate his birthday with than Tiff Needell have got moderated.
Wow, I only got 11 out of 17 in the quiz. Forgot Spa and China, and the names wrong for others (like Manama for Bahrain).
Not a clue. As far as I know WGP and the PlayStation game were the only ones that season. Unless it was something on PC?
Didn't the 97 Lola become there F3000 car?
Are you not mistaking it for another car?
someone mentioned the other day about renault podcasts being sporadic this year. from the horses mouth:
rf1pp: "...for this year we've changed the podcast format and will instead focus on different areas of the team, rather than reviewing races. We will still be talking to all the major players, and even the drivers, but we will aim at taking you behind the scenes of the team."
phew!
At one point the guy at the other end of the phone was talking to me and I had to say, "hold on a minute" a trader had just come up to me and started shouting about the server going down.
I told him about the situation and he wondered off. I came back to the guy on the phone and the guy said, "I'll turn it back on. I don't want that guy to shout at me".
Another podcast that doesn't want to repeat itself :)
:D :D :D
[ie, we don't expect to have much to talk about for our race performances]
That was me I believe, thanks for the info Mr C
absolutely! haven't listened yet, but the comments say it's a good one.
The last one was boring I thought, maybe they'll get a feel for it
Can't be any of the Geoff Crammond games, they were based on the 1994 and 1998 seasons.
By the way, I'm not sure if I've mentioned it yet but I really like the aSide with Joe podcasts. Even the China one worked well. I loved that you left the typo bit in :)
I'm gonna stick with the 'It's just me going mad' explanation. :P
Good plan :)
Only 5.75 million downloads to go ;)
http://www.apple.com/uk/
Should be there sometime tomorrow
There was an Nintendo game called something like Nigel Mansel racing. That was my favorite :)
They are great, I must leave some more feedback with Joe too
Did he smile in it?
I'm not sure he fitted in the game ;)
I have that on an Amiga emulator. It's rather amusing :)
Sounds about right. :P
yay!
the man has an amazing amount of patience when it comes to crappy technology. it was exactly like recording 12 days of xmas, with skype providing bubbling, echos and a whole bunch of silence.
glad it came across well because by the time we'd finished and posted it, it was something crazy like 3am. any sense of perspective had long gone out of the window.
In the "far too complicated to be workable" SofaF1 championship (which is at least now simpler than the Fantasy Racers thing Mr C is doing very well:

am quite enjoying this renault video that le bol posted on the renault blog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IJt-m8b3zQ
I love how little of the screen is used for the actual gameplay.
I liked it. It is exactly the kind of thing that I originally think I meant when was talking about the live interviews for the digest show. But in many ways so much better because Joe is bringing actual info live from the scene :)
You guys [and therfore us] are blessed to get to listen to his thoughts and it's proving to be a big attraction. Big props
You youngsters are spoilt. You don't need any more screen than that :)
The gameplay was superb I seem to remember. I wonder if I can get it for the Wii?
We need morw racing games with Nigel mansell staring at you as you drive
Nikki Lauda's paraphrasing Gavin here isn't he?
http://www.f1technical.net/news/12202?sid=9c8e95533c53fb2e4ca4ee8fc9a4b881
Is there no one in F1 who misses this show?
And though it's hard to tell he's also telling you what to do. It was very realistic :)
LOL Piquet still can't win!
Niki Lauda knows. Read his book and be shocked!
and don't we know it.
the only thing we'd change right now, is the fact the show vanishes under a sea of live commenting posts almost the minute it gets released. a casual browser, turning up say, today, has zero hope of finding/enjoying it.
they won't cut him a break will they?
Last call for Pitlane Fanatic quiz
am on me way.
Have fun... See you guys later :)
I'm finishing off my guest post ;)
Tough day I hear, Alex
Yeah... Beer o'clock now!
You can almost taste the cheese....
Reminds me of this
Can my PC hold up...
Desperately needs a reboot...
Am treading water myself this week. My colleague busted his knee so am kinda running the show on my own
[The shift manager is temporary and never around]
Can't remember the last time my Mac needed to be switched off ;)
Just downloaded the last 3 months of windows updates - thats all.
That'd be a lot of security patches then ;)
Well, as the operating system that took less time to hack than MacOS X did - I don't mind too much. :P
Touche
:D
Wrong - took more time to hack..
OSX was first to fall...
Brain fried... need caffeine!
I gotcha first time
Had any questions yet?
Still trying to get onto the site.
you want us to wait a mo?
I don't do the quiz, think everyone's off there now
It's slowly coming...
Here we go!
a new record for nick:
"When it comes to consistent finishing, no-one can match Nick's record: he has now notched up a sequence of 31 races, in all of which he has been officially placed."
would be nice if he'd won one of them.
Is it the beard?
The Samson effect in force
More Murray thoughts - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/murraywalker/2009/04/your_questions_answered_week_3.html
Yeah. Would rather have a win with 1 retirement than that
almost certainly.

yay The Apprentice :) this week they're doing an advertisement type of thing so it should be excellent.
I hate the BBC F1 website.
because?
I. can't. finish. my. guestpost :(
Geolocking. It sucks :(
what about the line that says:
IF YOU ARE WATCHING FROM OUTSIDE THE UK, CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE VIDEO?
because?
Guess what? I clicked on it and it said "This video is not available outside the UK".
I did try that already you know ;)
Well I have all the text there, I just can't finish it :(
haha. soz.
why would they put that there then?
Because the BBC are evil and mean and hate foreigners and traitors who won't live next to the queen :(
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7998992.stm
All UK people watch that ^^ 2004 Bahrain Highlights, only 6 minutes long, look at jenson in the end, looks very different..
However, can someone tell me who the person who is talking first on it, i can't work it out
could someone have made a mistake, and now they've read your comment on spc, might be working to fix it as we speak?
legard.
Who here works for the BBC?
really?! i thought it might be, but couldnt quite believe it
it says so on the screen, otherwise i'd have questioned it too.
twas a joke. earlier christine complained that they never update the f1 big picture and a couple of minutes later they did.
Ah cool. Got a bit paranoid there for a sec ;)
so it does, wasnt paying attention to that hehe
he wasn't much better back then. the condescending git.
Jonathan Ross on writing....
"I have more or less finished Sunday Times piece. BUT there are too many words and some are still in the wrong order. Writing is hard."
I've grown to like 'Wossy' lately...

I saw these when he was announced and didn't think much to him then. He hasn't changed much has he?
nope. who listened that and then offered him a contract?
how many podcasts can you handle in one week?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/22/sidepodpanel-puddles/
Evening all. Loving the Lola jokes, especially the mixed up muddled up grid - nice one Mr C.
The Renault video is interesting, but I'm not sure I quite understand the point of it. It's better than the McLaren R/C F1 car though.
Hehe
Too darn many.
yeah. making too much stuff methinks. am gonna send that girl on a boat trip again.
Oooh, time to see what I really sound like!
So you can eat take aways, drink wine and not do the washing up again? ;)
shhhhhhh!!
I'm not just talking about you either
Just remembered the other thing - Mac OS may have been the first to be hacked at the Pwn to Own contest, but the winner had the hack for a year before using it to win the Macbook.
Note that he chose to hack the Macbook so he'd win it :)
Um - didn't the boattrip *preceed* the recent bout of uber-production?
And sending us all Sidepodlove :)
true :(
There's only one answer - you'll both have to go on a boat trip and get married again.
Oh - and if you don't want to 'wash up'... Lidl have a deal this week on paper cups, plates and compostable cutlery :-) So you can recycle or compost and there will be no landfill evidence either :-D
But who will keep an eye on the comments. Assuming Christine's Mother in Law will be going
good advice. 'cept i don't shop.
This is a good point, we managed to start a religion last time Christine was away, goodness knows what they would find on their return if both of them were to go away.
Which is worse - not washing up and being 'caught' etc, or spending 2 minutes in a shop grabbing 3 things and handing over £3?
good advice.
Except it's Lidl :(
It could be worse... you could be close to IKEA and having to fight the desire to bin the cups you found under the teenagers bed that were mouldy (think black spores...) and just walk down the road to buy new ones (veryredface)
I've been crying with laughter so much at the Sidepodpanel JA impressions. Still love "...a hand gesture" :D
Guest article submitted! w00t! :D
I need to do me a JA spoof video. It's just too tempting :D
received sir. cheers.
I hope it's ok :)
am sure it's perfect. pics take a while, but it should be up by tomorrow am ;)
weyyyyyyyy!!
Aww cheers ;)
Good night all!
night gavin.
See ya later Mr Gavin
It's my first step on the road to rehablogitation. Now I can start work on my F1 stats blog - including the name of the thing and which blog host to use (help)?
Right, I'm doing a JA mock video like Lukeh :D
Why :-( ?
I'd have suggested somewhere else (like somewhere *online* ) but it would possibly take more time and be more expensive...
Although I have a brochure here for cornstarch based crockery and cutlery if that would be preferable? Just that even w/s its expensive (and comes all the way from somewhere very very far compared to the UK... there is a finnish brand though, but they are even scarier...)
Ooooo - how about just eating delivery pizza or whatever next time out of the boxes? Or just fruit (comes ready to eat and in biodegradeable self-packaging where packaged)? Or subscribing to a meals service for a week? :-)
Max's deputy was marco Piccinini who is on the Ferrari board but I think he retired and someone else go the job.
It doesn't have to be anyone from motorsport at all.
You comment surfing again Steven?
Anyone seen this on AUTOSPORT...
"The FIA has asked Formula 1 team principals for their input on whether the £30 million per season budget cap figure announced at last month's World Council meeting should be revised, AUTOSPORT can reveal.
"I actually think it could be done for £25 million but that's just my opinion," said Mosley after the budget cap plan was first announced in March. "All my advisers think it should be more.""
Oh my gosh, is he insane!?
This sentance
describes everything that is wrong with Formula 1.
nope, but upper-case, bold and italic? now you're just giving them ideas :)
Am loving this comment over on F1 Minute today:
"Never heard of Lola? I am now deleting your web site from my favorites."
My bad ;)
i wrote Autosport, and it didnt look right, so then i wrote AUTOSPORT and it wasn't just good enough, so a bit of the ol' bold and italic, sorted :)
hehehe
I'm gonna go make a team and take place in 1 qualifying session too I think, seeing as there's so much love for lola despite being so so so so so *breaths in* so so bad! :D
Funny thing is that on BAT, the 1997 carset actually features Lola! And people win in it! :D
Am tempted to reply
'This is a shambolic service that must be stopped at once. Bring in a host who knows what he/she is talking about. Bring in Legard.'
Your first "subscription cancellation" message?
and still i don't know why they're important, or why anybody cares?
best give 'em a refund.
I've just been reading an articel about what to call your wireless network.
My absolute favourite - "Get off my LAN" :D
i want my 60 seconds back.
:D :D
i'm afraid you'd only waste them :P
that i would.
:D
Anyone from the west country?
Hehehe.
Quiz results are coming
That would have been "get off moi LAAAAN"
So - Bill Bailey is on somewhere then :-)
They'll be naming networks after scumble, CMOTC and Ankh Morpork next... oh hang on....
(someone ask Andy about the giving of names to servers.... :-P )
Perhaps because they used to make Formula 1 cars back in the 60s and 70s?
Sigh... should be 'moy' and have a few more NNNNN... not to mention the sight uplift and an L at the end if heading towards Glos, or down south of Exeter...
mutter mutter, spent enough of his time with people from bridgy 'n' pethyton and he *still* can't get this right... mutter mutter
Should say congratulations to Flibster for winning the quiz.
Hmph. It's just a joke.
33 points! I would have been happy in the mid 20's
:D
Hey really sorry, quick of topic question.
Alternatives to twitter?
Right, off to bed. See y'all tomorrow
Try Identi.ca, has some of the spc community on it
I hope this helps you out a bit. The NHL has 30 teams split into 2 conferences each with 3 divisions and the line 'Never date within the division' is a take on the 'never trade a player within your own division' because you don't want that player and his new team coming back and beating you. The Boston Bruins (black) and the Montreal Canadiens (white) are not only in the same division but they have a long history of hard fought playoff battles with Boston usually on the losing end and with the Bruins about to knock the Canadiens out of the playoffs in 4 games straight tonight :) we don't want to see one our boys fraternising with a fan of the enemy.
When I worked for a medical database company the servers were named after great physicians and doctors.
When I ran a test network, the server names were originally the same as the real servers but with a T prefix. This lead to some interesting names:
TSHIRT, TTIME, TBONE, TCUP, TTRAY, TTOTAL and so on. This was inspired by Computing as they were running a series about directories to be added to network drives, e.g. S:\CARGO. Sadly, they all got changed to much more boring names.
Although for most of this household, the first thought would be of a small, blonde, westlondon flat living female child with a brother called charlie....
:)
Thanks to Amy for mentioning the Brundle/Coulthard grid walk. That was great. I love the question to DC about if he'd ever been called "David baby". His response is priceless.
Now up to a magnicent 9. The apathy is astounding.
Of that there is no doubt.
Night all.
Lola did an awful lot better before 1997 than they have since. They dominated F3000/CART etc etc. Won a lot of proper titles and blew F1 badly again.
The difference this time is Eric Broadley has retired and Mart Birrane is running the show and he is much more David Richards compared to Broadley's Collin Chapman.
Lola were a huge name in all single seater classes other than F1. It is unfair to sy they were only a big name in GTs.
They are right in this case. DR has taken a Lola made a few minor mods and now claims it is a totally new car and nothing to do with them any more.
The T70 has to be one of the most famous Le Mans racers ever.

No. Alberto Ascari won the championship in 52 and 53. Antonio Ascari was his father andd the details of their deaths are spooky beyond belief. off the top of my head both died testing cars when they had just turned up at a track to watch a team mate test and their deaths happened 30 years apart to the day.
