Another day closer to the Bahrain Grand Prix, but we're still getting to grips with what happened in China first. These back-to-back races are not popular in Sidepodcast Towers. Anyway, here are some of the things up for discussion today:

  • The Shanghai edition of AUTOSPORT's Paddock Life sums up a lot of the questions we had over the weekend. The explanation for Vettel's car sticker, why Bernie really likes China, and how Ferrari paid their respects to the earthquake victims in Italy, all that is in there. My favourite bit is more madness from Flav, though.
  • Webber's BBC column is an interesting read, if only to hear directly from him about finishing second. He reviews the race and then looks forward to Bahrain with: "It is a good little track for overtaking, Bahrain..." Condescending, much?
  • Ollie has a summary of Adrian Sutil's bad luck over at BlogF1, which got me thinking. Will Force India ever score a championship point? Should Adrian be looking elsewhere to try his hand at finishing in the top 8? Or is it Sutil who is the bad luck charm at the moment?

That'll do it for now. Feel free to discuss whatever is on your mind, the above topic list is just a suggestion. I'll see you in the comments.

Oh dear oh dear. What a mess. :D

The lovely ladies next door have just come home after a night out. They're still drunk and a complete mess. One is missing a shoe. Looks like they had a good night. ;)

They are having broadband installed today though - I've got to go round to install the sockets for them before it's all activated. Where did I leave my drill? :D

  • Flibster21/04/2009 at 10:25

I have a selection of expensive beans which I will grind and make espresso for them.

    LUNCHTIME LINKAGE:

Bourdais says STR4 not suiting his style

Unfortunately we have heard this one before. I think time is really running out for this guy if he can't put in a decent drive soon....

    Haug: Senna wanted F1 promise

Hmm... seems like a silly decision to turn down DTM on, but it's an odd series where many struggle and it has become a bit of a graveyard for srivers unfortunately. Bruno needs to be back in single seaters very quickly if he stands any chance of being in F1 again ... maybe he should have a crack at A1GP judging by the buzz from Liuzzi's performance at the weekend?

He's going to work around it or get the dar developing in his way if he's going to keep his drive for the rest of the season. Buemi is walking all over him at this point.

The more I hear about Senna the less I like him, which is a shame. He seems to be behaving like it's his right to be in F1, which it certainly isn't, surname or not.

I expected more from him I think. He's a 4 time Champ Car champion so he's not completely talentless, but I'm now wondering if spending the time in Champ car has effected him badly.

It's very rare we see an American series driver come into F1 and do well, it can't be a coincidence....

I saw him race in F3000 and thought he had the ability to get into F1, but somewhere along the way, it's all gone tits-up.

It started off well for Villeneuve. When he signed on to Williams, they made sure he got lots and lots of track time to get him up to speed as quickly as possible. It certainly worked if he only just missed out on the championship in '96 and won it a year later.

I think that's the problem with Champ Car/IndyCar converts nowadays. Teams aren't giving them enough time in the car to help them familiarise with the differences between Indy and F1 and hopefully get on the pace. In this case with Bourdais, it seems like exactly the same problem.

  • Amy21/04/2009 at 11:06

How much testing did Bourdais do over the winter compared to Buemi? I know Buemi was in the 2008 car most of the time, but Bourdais must have had very little time with the 2009 car.

Exactly. It's almost like he's being set up to fail here. Who do STR really want in that car?

It seems like it. Buemi got loads of time in the 2008 car and I think it's paid off. All I know is he spent a hell of a lot more time on track during the winter than Bourdais is, mainly because of the issue of who was going to be in the second seat - Seb ot Sato.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 11:11

I can't blame Bruno too much - he's getting pretty old for an F1 wannabe. Unless he gets a top-line seat ala Damon or Lewis double-time, he'll be quickly forgotten.

Had he not decided to stop after his uncle died, he'd probably have gotten into F1 easily.

STR don't have that much money, so having Sato could have bankrupted them with repairs.

STR don’t have that much money, so having Sato could have bankrupted them with repairs.

But his sponsor would've been paying for them anyway. And his technical experience would be helpful to someone like Buemi who's only getting started.

Count LeSeb lucky - had it not been for the recession, we might be seeing Sato in the 2nd seat.

Personally I still feel Sato should have gotten that seat. I mean, yes Bourdais' a 4 times Champ Car champion, but I'd prefer someone who's been there and done it rather than someone who's only had one season and not really impressed as much as everyone thought he would.

  • Flibster21/04/2009 at 11:25

But Sato's a known quantity, he's had a stint at the front, but he didn't have it. Bourdais has only had 1 season which was also plagued by bad luck. Surely he deserves a 2nd chance more than Sato deserves a 4th one?

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 11:27

    Can’t see it happening.

FOTA won't be happy. Who will be happy with no British GP? Even Bernie wouldn't be happy, even if he made more money.

But couldn't you say the same about Barrichello?

  • Christine21/04/2009 at 11:29

    Found this interesting too:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74675

Mario Theissen says: "So far we have successfully kept apart the work on the future direction of the sport and on the other hand the operational daily business at the race track. This is definitely a test to FOTA."

    This means you Flav.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 11:30

But couldn’t you say the same about Barrichello?

Bourdais didn't have to deal with team orders, did he?

Besides, Brawn's scenario is different from STR's. Brawn barely had time to get up and running, and now have less resources than last year. They needed Rubens' expertise to minimize the impact. STR is RBR's B-team, so they get most of the car in good condition. Less setup work is needed, so they could afford to get a young hotshoe in the 2nd seat.

  • me21/04/2009 at 11:30

FIA and Bernie will want to stomp on FOTA - stop them getting too much power in the sport they run.

A couple of weeks before and after the Grand Prix formally known as the British Grand Prix - they could go almost anywhere. Canada is certainly possible.

  • Pauli (oz)21/04/2009 at 11:32

Montreal will be Max and Bernie's way of appeasing the fans.

What I meant by FOTA's role is that they may decide to help fund a British GP return to Silverstone - it was always an issue of money, after all.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 11:34

And if Hamilton is indeed a megastar of the present and the future, why isn't Britain getting the same treatment as Spain (who has Alonso) and Germany (who had Schumacher and now has Vettel)?

Who WOULDN'T want Vettel in their car right now? Mercedes still haven't gotten their German champion after they lost Schumacher to Ferrari.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/04/2009 at 13:36

Vauxhall have withdrawn from the BTCC, effective end of season :-(

Sad, but unsurprising. Although the BTCC will soldier on and still be the best form of Touring Car racing, I am sure. There are enough Tuners and racing factories in the UK to make a field of stripped down production cars for racing - but maybe we will have to return to the pre-Super Tourers of the early 90's... not exactly a bad thing!

  • Flibster21/04/2009 at 13:36

Who WOULDN’T want Vettel in their car right now? Mercedes still haven’t gotten their German champion after they lost Schumacher to Ferrari.

So true. Vettel in the McLaren would be good to see, would McLaren want it though, in particular Whitmarsh and Hamilton Sr.

    Quote from Newey

The unique feature of the Red Bull cars is the pullrod rear suspension, which is a good solution when you don't have a double-diffuser. But getting it to work with the diffuser will be more difficult. We won't have a double-diffuser before Monaco.

Monaco? Only 1 race later than most then.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 13:40

Newey will find a way - he’s a smart bloke!

Fingers crossed. But as Steven said, the pullrod rear susp. needs the car to be high in the air, relatively speaking. The trick diffusers require the car to be as low to the ground as possible. They can't go two ways at once.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/04/2009 at 13:41

Hah. I was under Internet blackout and I’m still catching up. A situation you must be familiar with - while your laptop was borked you did the same :p

yachts are powered differently to speedboats - they need the wind's help.

if it'll make you feel any better, i'm sure Vettel will have many more wet wins in Newey-powered cars.

Everybody ready for the most exciting Bahrain Evah!

3 out of 3 for the new regs so far. We are due for a boring race - which may happen in Bahrain or Spain, from the looks of it.

In fact, we're VERY due for a boring race. We've only had 1 boring race (China 2008) in the last 9 Grands Prix - quite a statistic. ;)

I think it'll be nice to have a dry race at least. All this wet weather nullifies the concept of close racing and everyone goes into "Cautious Get Me Home Safely" mode because of it. With dry conditions, we can have some proper racing at least. But as Journeyer's just pointed out, this is Bahrain we're talking about here...

We actually saw lots of dicing in Sepang before the rain made it undriveable. Hamilton v Webber and Button v Glock are good examples.

Ye we are actually overdue BUT I can't wait because two of the underperforming teams have tested there.

Although that does not mean more overtaking but I can't wait to see how much better the teams that have tested there can be. Hopefully the times will be really close.

  • Amy21/04/2009 at 15:20

Good point. I was going to mention that in the Super Season Grid post I did yesterday but didn't get round to it. Toyota did 4 race distances worth of laps in 2 days at one point.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 15:21

I was thinking the other day how nice it will be to see someone else get the pole + win there this year :D

Massa owns Turkey, but he also has big stakes in Bahrain (2 consecutive wins there) and Interlagos (2 wins + 1 win he gave away to Kimi - in the last 3 years)

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 15:22

Good point. I was going to mention that in the Super Season Grid post I did yesterday but didn’t get round to it. Toyota did 4 race distances worth of laps in 2 days at one point.

I wouldn't call Toyota underperforming. They're still 3rd in the WCC right now.

That said, I don't think we'll see them leap up the order just because they've tested here. It'll be close between the Toyotas and RBRs. Ferrari will score some points, assuming they don't get brain fade again. McLaren may struggle to score this time round.

  • Kostia21/04/2009 at 15:25

Whatever anyone says I will reply 'but this team has tested there' or 'but this team has not tested there'

    So Massa has tested there!

P.S. is ferrari running KERS in Bahrain?

  • Scott Woodwiss21/04/2009 at 15:25

I think those 3 teams that tested in Bahrain will already be on step ahead because they'll have tons of setup data. Based on that, I'm predicting we won't see any of the 6 drivers out on circuit very much, except for just install laps and testing one or two new parts, provided any of them bring anything like that.

  • Journeyer21/04/2009 at 15:26

P.S. is ferrari running KERS in Bahrain?

Massa wants it, so he may get it. Not sure about Raikkonen, though.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/04/2009 at 15:26

P.S. is ferrari running KERS in Bahrain?

Massa has said he wants KERS back and Ferrari themselves have said taking it off in China made them fall even further off the pace so based on those two facts, I'd say so.

That procedure didn't work for Toyota in the past. It's more about your car's natural pace, really.

But hey, if Toyota beat RBR as best-of-the-rest, that will make Brawn happy - they love other teams taking points off each other.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/04/2009 at 15:28

True - but remember too that they got hit by a sandstorm on 2 or 3 testing days. So they may not have as much data as we think.

Ah yeah I remember that now. But if I were those 3 teams, I'd certainly put the data to good use and use it towards a base setup to work on in practice.

Xbox Live is what sets the 360 apart from its rivals in my opinion.

I always consider the current generation consoles to have the following as it's strong point:

    PS3: Graphics

    Wii: Fun Factor

    X630: Online play

Yes you have to pay for it, but XBL is 10 times better than PSN.

It's interesting to note that The Red Bulletin had a Q&A with Adrian Newey on their site this morning. He described that whilst RBR where looking into incorporating a new diffuser into the rear of the RB5, there was no firm guarantees.

    He said:

“It’s something we will have to look at. We tried some things on the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) last June but we understood that the double-deck rear diffuser was illegal. Now it has been declared legal we’ll have to look at it again. For certain teams they work extremely effectively, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll work for our car. It’s not only a case of ‘can you make it fit?’ but also ‘does it work with the aero philosophy of the car or not?’

Which slightly contradicts the article on Autosport. Bit strange?

  • chris evans21/04/2009 at 17:31

    PS3: Graphics

    X630: Online play

Can't say I agree on the PS3 graphics, not yet anyway. It may be a more powerful console, but oddly, multi-format games usually look better on 360. The difference is, the PS3 has a longer life ahead of it, so while we are starting to reach the peak of what 360 can do, there is still more to come from the PS3.

  • Lukeh21/04/2009 at 17:34

Yes you have to pay for it, but XBL is 10 times better than PSN.

Have said time and time again, I'll happily pay £5 a month for the quality servcie I get with Xbox Live. Really really excited for the f1 game though, been waiting for a 360 Formula 1 game for so so long, although it'll obviously be on the PS3 too so everyone wins.

I'm wondering whether Codies will take the wii dive with F1? I mean it's got a huge boost in publicity with Lewis and Jenson now, they could make a toned down game (See any EA sports game...) for the Wii audience, as much as it would annoy me personally...

Well the official word at the moment is "home consoles, PC and handhelds". They have confirmed 360 and PS3 versions through talking about controllers and such, and PSP and DS versions are a shoe in (maybe even something on iPhone) but honestly, at the moment I will be surprised if there is a Wii version.

The problem is , it is very difficult to downscale games to a less powerful system. If there was a PS2 version in the works, they would be stupid not to move it over to Wii, but Codemasters generally only work on current gen hardware.

  • chris evans21/04/2009 at 17:41

So is a banana, but there are no games for those either. ;)

I thought they had confirmed a Wii version?

  • chris evans21/04/2009 at 17:46

I thought they had confirmed a Wii version?

There are very conflicting views on it. An awful lot has been said about the new game, but very little of it is official. It does seem like they will be missing a massive market by not releasing it on Wii, but it will be an awful lot more work. The only other thing I can think of is that an outside developer is making a Wii version for them.

Drivers and weekends, I think. If you mean which averages I want you to do, the results are taken from fastest lap times from every session for each driver and then calculating an average lap time.

    Georgia.

talking of which, scott. can i make a polite request that at some point you consider switching from white text on a black background, to something less… striking, please?

thankfully you provide full text rss feeds, so i can read the posts in my feed reader without issue, but i do struggle with your current colour selection.

    Scott,

In lieu of this, would you like me to make graphs that fit your current style or graohs which suit black text on white background?

  • me21/04/2009 at 19:36

OK, always open to constructive criticism. What would you suggest? :)

most things work well for me, i softer shade of background like charcoal would be better. anything other than white on black is good for me.

i must forward the same criticism to the beeb's f1 dept. too.

You can download some blogspot templates of the internet. Not many 'F1' related ones, but some will help with the white on black issue.

I was looking at a dark red but seeing as Mr C has suggested a charcoal colour, I'd go for something which fits that.

  • Ollie21/04/2009 at 19:39

Just a quick shoutout: Mr C's photo of Jenson Button and Butler-Henderson from the 2007 British Grand Prix is the subject of this weeks Caption Contest at BlogF1. I'm sure you all know where to go by now... :)

I would add, although I'm not entirely certain what it specifically is you are talking about, that black on white is also bad. Well, it is for me anyway. The black text needs to be softer. So instead of #000, lighten it a bit. #333 is popular. Or, and in my opinion better, don't use a white background. Change it slightly so it isn't so bright and glaring. Just a couple of thoughts on web-readibility.

I'm having a look now with these xml files off the 50 designs link... as far as I know with them, you get the xml out of the zip, then on your blogger account go on Layout and Edit HTML, upload the xml there, and give it a preview to see how it's turned out...

You can edit the code if you like too, which seems helpful...

    [Vista]

    Evening all.

Just catching up on the comments.

Personally I like Bruno Mantovani's latest, in Malaysia Rubens and Jenson had boats, now Der Seb has a bigger one. This could become a running gag. I'd have put Sutil in a boat with a hole in the bottom as well.

For all of you that don't like the white on black text on web pages, remember we discussed this already - if it bothers you, override the page settings in the browser so that you get the colours you want instead.

I know I am biased, but there are plenty of independent Mac/PC comparisons that show that Macs are only marginally more expensive than PCs. You can run the latest version of Mac OS X on machines that are 5 years old. Try doing that with Vista.

Here's a brilliant story of what happens when you give a Mac to a Windows user and then try to take it away again:

I’m going to find it so hard not snapping up Snow Leopard on Day One

in fairness, i got a little burnt with leopard. final cut suffered all manner of problems. i'll wait this time around sadly.

  • Andy+Taylor21/04/2009 at 21:49

I’m going to find it so hard not snapping up Snow Leopard on Day One

I really don't understand that. Inital releases are always, um, not quite ready for release. It's always a good idea to wait for the first or second revision.

How many people thought that about Vista, or even Windows 7 for that matter?

Mrs Ballmer. (for the record, Mrs Gates wants an iPhone but isn't allowed one).

Well I've got one on IGN.com that I update sporadically but I'd probably be better off with a 'proper' one. Any advice anyone?

start with something free like wordpress or blogger (you can migrate later). pick a style, come up with a title and then start typing.

    plug when ready :)
