The Monday following the race before, but there's no time to relax as it's time to start thinking ahead to Bahrain. What will we see in terms of performance? Will there be any more diffusers present? Will KERS ever return to those who have dumped it? Meanwhile, there are still things to analyse from the race we have just witnessed:

  • There's a discussion in the comments over who is the better wet weather driver - Hamilton or Vettel. Journeyer has done a great race by race analysis, and it's time to weigh in your thoughts. Was Hamilton helped by the car? Did this race prove that a bad car plus rain don't mix? Is Vettel supreme or just lucky?
  • Ferrari are having to put their foot down and state that their championship isn't over yet. The party line is that it's only been three races and anything could change. However, they might need to tell Kimi that because he's already written the championship off. Who's closer to the truth? Could Ferrari make a resurgance despite such poor results?
  • As we mentioned in the live show yesterday (edited version coming soon), the Laureus Awards nominations have been announced and both Vettel and Hamilton are up for a prize. Thankfully not pitted against each other this time, the nominees can be viewed here, and it looks like Lewis has some stiff competition. The Olympics is still dominating sports awards again. Who do you think will win?

If there's anything following the race that you feel needs discussion, then please feel free to talk about that, or anything. The Daily post is open for your thoughts. I'll see you in the comments.

    Morning all.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 07:55

    Hey Christine!

Was Vettel lucky? You can only be lucky once or twice - but he's won twice in the wet, and beaten Lewis multiple times. He even beat him when they went head-to-head in Brazil, and Lewis' championship was at stake!

This is real ability from DerSeb. Not yet at Senna or Schumacher's level, but the potential is there to be at that level.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 08:01

Could Ferrari make a resurgance despite such poor results?

They can have a resurgence ala Renault at the end of last year. They can be irritants to probable title contenders Button and Vettel.

But contend for the title themselves? I doubt it. Here's what each driver has gone through in the 1st 3 races

Raikkonen - driver error - strategy error - lack of pace

Massa - reliability issue - strategy error - reliability issue

They've lost the bulletproof quality they had in all their title-winning years, and they're now making strategy errors too. The strategy errors can be fixed. But with a testing ban in place, I'm not so sure they can fix their reliability issues. Even if they can, that would be at the cost of resources which could've been used to develop new components to catch up to the front.

    Morning all!

I think Ant on 5 Live hit the nail on the head with Ferrari's problems. Over the last few years they have slowly been lsong their top personel (brawn, todt, schumi....) and the effect is now catching up to them.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 08:07

That should be losing personel of course, stupid phone..

  • Sean Golding20/04/2009 at 08:09

I see a trend. I came 17th in BATracer for at least the third time this season.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 08:13

I think Ant on 5 Live hit the nail on the head with Ferrari’s problems. Over the last few years they have slowly been [losing] their top personel (brawn, todt, schumi…) and the effect is now catching up to them.

Schumi is still with them, but I think his consultant role is more of an 'outside looking in' role than one of 'inside looking out', which he had as a driver.

With Todt probably off to the Place de la Concorde (pro or anti Ferrari?) and Brawn now firmly based in Brackley (probably for the rest of his years), we may see Ferrari return to the wilderness for the first time since the 1980s. It's up to Stefano, Aldo, Luca, Chris, Rob, and Gabrielle to stop that from happening.

    Morning all,

Just a quick update - the news from the this country is understandably very critical of the prancing stallion. Every headline runs with something similar to 3 races, 0 points. followed by words like disaster and fall (from grace) and delusion. not being a ferrari fan, i quite like it :) i grew into F1 as a Hill fan so anything red was not a good thing. Hard to change that sort of environment.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 08:15

3 races, 0 points. I think Kubica may be reading a similar headline in Poland. ;)

Disaster? Yes. Fall from grace? Absolutely. But it's not the end of the world yet - they can still reestablish themselves as a solid midfield team (if not quite a championship contender). It really depends on what updates they get in Barcelona.

  • Sean Golding20/04/2009 at 08:17

3 races, 0 points. I think Kubica may be reading a similar headline in Poland. ;)

Worse than that, it's 3 races, 1 finish.

Bourdais had a rather amusing accident post-race yesterday: http://uk.redbulletin.com/articles/airhead_drivers/

For some reason, Bourdais took it upon himself to dry out the inside of his crash helmet. His tool of choice was an airline he found in the team garage – normal operating pressure about a zillion Psi.

So when he switched it on with what his fellow Frenchies would call nonchalant insouciance, the hose and its heavy metal end promptly spun out of his hand and clonked him on the forehead. The result – a bump slightly bigger than the pre-accident head itself.

Is this how it is between you and LeSeb now? ;)

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 08:30

Applies to Kimi, Felipe, and Robert.

I absolutely agree with what Gavin said on the panel. Felipe needs Fernando to come in quickly. And so do Ferrari actually.

It seems like Kimi's attitude is "you build me a race winning car, and I'll win the race." He doesn't seem too interested in helping the team develop the car, because he doesn't think that's his responsibility. Maybe Fernando can save Ferrari?

    Morning, btw. :)

I absolutely agree with what Gavin said on the panel. Felipe needs Fernando to come in quickly. And so do Ferrari actually.

Ferrari need him, for sure. Felipe needs to prove to Ferrari they don't need him. Fernando will be holding Felipe's poisoned chalice - the Ferrari may go faster, but no way can Felipe beat Fernando.

He never thought it was his responsibility, just as it was in his McLaren days. If things stay as they are, Kimi may just decide to call it a day at the end of the season.

And, um, you wouldn't happen to you know, want to share that strategy with a struggling team that hasn't got any points at all would you...?

  • Scott Woodwiss20/04/2009 at 09:02

And, um, you wouldn’t happen to you know, want to share that strategy with a struggling team that hasn’t got any points at all would you…?

Well it was only a Monaco strategy really, but if you want to know, I ran a short stint of 15 laps on the soft tyre, then switched to the hards and stacked 35 laps of fuel into my car for a long second stint. Thanks to a couple of safety cars, it paid off and I was 2nd on the last restart. Fortunately I was able to get past Lou somehow and won in Monaco! I won in the 2008 game by over a minute and even though the margin was much smaller, I am still the king of the modern day Monaco GP! :D

  • Scott in Italy20/04/2009 at 09:06

I don't think marketing themselves as a midfield team, like so many other teams do, is what they're after. Italians expect to win, and then kill their young when they don't.

Bourdais had a rather amusing accident post-race yesterday: http://uk.redbulletin.com/articles/airhead_drivers

priceless. At least he was trying to hang out with the team, more than Hamilton is able to at the moment, if the reports about the tension are correct.

Ferrari are not going to win this season. They can aim for a middle of the road placing this year, then look to re-establish themselves as contenders next year.

Exactly. They should punch at their weight, rather than trying too hard and tripping over themselves in the process. Then again, this is post-Schumi Ferrari, so cold logic isn't as valued as it used to be.

priceless. At least he was trying to hang out with the team, more than Hamilton is able to at the moment, if the reports about the tension are correct.

That should endear LeSeb a bit to his mechanics. Now if only he could go faster... :D

That said, do you guys think Lewis' tension with the mechanics is true? Makes 2007 and Alonso's allegations seem lightyears away, no? ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/04/2009 at 09:40

I really wanna win this PUMA competition, so this is what I've got for why I should be a PUMA reporter:

My passion for Formula 1 is unbridled. The way I talk, view and think about F1 has changed radically in the past few years and now I am an avid follower. I never miss a session, whether it be practice, qualifying or indeed the race. I'm always making sure I am up to date with the latest news and goings-on in the paddock and pitlane. I have been a fan of F1 since I was just 2 years old. My first word wasn't Mum or Dad, but Mansell, after Nigel Mansell sent me a signed picture. I am a member of an online F1 community which lives and breathes the sport and is full of like minded fans who give me a place to truly express my opinions and thoughts on F1. Now I'm 18 and the sport is my world. I love the speed, the passion, the noise, the excitement, the tense feeling before the start, the rush down to the first corner. Wheel-to-wheel action, side by side at 200mph. This is F1 at it's best and to get a chance to view a race weekend like the drivers themselves do would just be incredible. I have been to races before, but to experience one up close and personal would be a dream come true. Plus, to say that I was one of those people who was there at the last ever British GP at Silverstone would be something to savour for the rest of my life. One of my career options is to get into motorsport journalism and to be able to get a taste of what those who work for the likes of Autosport or F1 Racing would see, hear, feel, touch and taste could really help me get a better insight into what it takes to make it as a journalist of the sport. I'm just an ordinary 18 year old from the East of England, but my love of F1 is extraordinary. So all I ask is to consider me as a PUMA reporter. It would mean more than you could ever imagine.

Exactly. They should punch at their weight, rather than trying too hard and tripping over themselves in the process. Then again, this is post-Schumi Ferrari, so cold logic isn’t as valued as it used to be.

I agree with Journeyer and Sean that the team is unlikely to win this year but they are not allowed to say that here. At least not yet, we have many seasons, seen the first 2 or 3 races go in a very different direction to the season previously. most of the times, the new technology (wings/turning system/diffuser etc) will keep outperforming, but the others do catchup. will ferrari catch up enough? i doubt it, but I'd like to see more than 2 teams fighting it out for the championship, regardless of who they are...except ferrari ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/04/2009 at 09:47

I think that's the issue, if teams, (even Brawn did this), suggest they'll be mid field contenders, then they're never criticised unless they have lots of DNFs. It's those top teams that struggle, and get the comments. But I'm happy about this, every team deserves a turn at the top - it's good for the long term future of the sport, and keeps sponsors on those cars. Let's face it, a lot of space was left on the Brawn car before race 1.

    Morning Gavin :)

Morning. Just come back from the hospital. After four months, no symptoms and many tests where they told me that nothing is wrong with me but they would like to do further tests - guess what? That's right, I'm completely healthy and not epileptic but they want to do an MRI scan just to make sure.

I've had two blood tests, many blood pressure tests, an EKG AND EEG test, and today I had a physical. But nobody has the guts to tell me I am perfectly healthy - they keep referring to their seniors who make them do more tests on me.

I should be happy but I am frustrated. Today I was supposed to draw a line under the whole thing but it goes on. I feel like Mclaren in front of the WMSC :-(

Now every excuse has fallen, now that we know it's not KERS, the diffuser, Ross, Bernie, the FIA - they have no involvement; now it is clear that it is Ferrari and only Ferrari, that is responsible

Oh forgot that bit! Yup, register and then you can vote for submissions and add your own. Bare minimum details are requested to get a username and password.

William Shakespeare I am not, but I’m now going to ask you to vote for my submission which is here, yes here, click this bit and whilst you’re at it, you can look and vote for the missus’ lovely piccies.

That looks cool too. Reckon I could submit one of my existing pieces from my blog? Or does it have to be something original?

  • Scott in Italy20/04/2009 at 10:41

I should be happy but I am frustrated. Today I was supposed to draw a line under the whole thing but it goes on. I feel like Mclaren in front of the WMSC

Bad news Gavin, but if you're feeling good, run with that diagnosis :) I hope you get the answers, or maybe, given you feel good, that's just perfect :)

  • Kathi20/04/2009 at 10:43

Well... I think they want you to either write about the 'Red Bull New Years No Limits' event (after watching the video) or talk about a sports athlete or event 'near you'.

    http://www.redbullreporter.com/category/become-a-reporter/

Obviously Sebastien Loeb lives in France, I in the UK. That's kinda close isn't it? :-)

Looking at the other submissions, which have to be approved before going on, nobody seems to be sticking rigidly to their suggestions.

  • Stuart C20/04/2009 at 10:46

I second that. Sometimes we put too much faith in the ability of modern medicine to give us all the answers; advanced though it is, it can't tell us everything.

Move to a proper country. Denmark has no interest in F1 yet every single session is live (and they do try and make an effort with the coverage, I just disagree with the style of the commentary).

  • Scott in Italy20/04/2009 at 10:51

    No. this was from http://www.repubblica.it/2009/03/sport/formulauno/3gp-cina/delusione-ferrari-cina/delusione-ferrari-cina.html

i haven't checked any of the other papers. the news last night was all the same pretty much. 3 races. 0 points.

I moved from a proper country! NZ has all sessions live, albeit on Sky so it was costing me $70 a month to have it. They also started showing practice after I moved

It just shocks me that they're keen to use Webber in all their ads for their 24 hour sports channel, but not willing to actually put his sport on it.

I've streamed all the practices so far and most of the qualy sessions as well, so I'm sure I'll cope, although my internet does appear to have been throttled because we've probably gone over our data allowance. I use my 3g connection as back up when the normal wireless gets slowed down. Qualy is at 9pm I think.

NZ used to get a bum deal when TVone had the coverage - great buildup, no qualifying and all the asian races were delayed (primetime coverage). Sky NZ shows the world feed but only showed qualy and race when I was there - but always live and always with the pit reporters too. Unfortunately, they always seemed to interview Jenson when the post race press conference was on, so I started to get sick of him a bit ;-) Luckily, that has passed now, but I am shocked how bad the Aussies do the coverage - and yet all the taxi racers are live!

Call me stereotypical, but the people in F1 aren't that unlike characters in wrestling. This idea was actually swirling around my head. I was thinking, "what if we used knockout regs for the race?"

That said, I'm not sure it would hold much appeal, even as a non-championship all-star race.

Whats the commentator, jim ross? He should swap with Legard. Now that man is a commentator!

Agreed. Jim Ross is a LEGEND.

His style of commentating is such that he’s unique, and yet, would work well in any sport. He’s a storyteller, and a brilliant one at that.

Just had a funny thought - Legard doing WWE commentary:

"Look, there's a wrestler! Look, there's a chair! Girlfriend! Referee! Hits him!"

    Brundle: "That's just a replay :-("

Haha! Is Legard that bad now? Surely he's better than that? They said he was good in his R5L stint. Also, he's got to be better than Allen... right?

I think JA might be better than Legard. Bear in mind, ITV forced the Lewis focus and you can't bite the hand that feeds you. Take Nick Daman from Midweek Motorsport - he regularly has a rant on that show about how bad sportscars is getting and how uninteresting the series is becoming, yet when he commentates the LMES on Eurosport (who he criticized for bad coverage) he makes out that all is fine and dandy. I suspect JA was put in a similar predicament with ITV...

Also JA knew stuff about F1 and it's clear that Legard doesn't. You feel that Legard is lost and needs Brundle and statman to give some insight. Come on BBC, admit you made a mistake and give us Crofty!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/04/2009 at 11:59

Can I also add that the way people respond to Legard is frighteningly similar to JA... same criticisms and alll... :-(

JA always did his research - and it was obvious in the way he did his commentary. It wasn't always bearable, but it was usually informative.

Can I also add that the way people respond to Legard is frighteningly similar to JA… same criticisms and all

This I don't understand. The Allen-Brundle problem was that we had 2 analysts and no commentators. That's a completely different scenario to what is starting to become the Legard-Brundle problem: we have 1 analyst and 1 clueless commentator.

I'd rather have the analyst over the clueless commentator. That said, his vocal delivery is still better than Allen's - easier on the ear.

But Mr C said it took 4 races for Crofty to settle into TV work. Let's give Legard until Barcelona, which would be Race 5. Watcha think?

People are sick of the sound of Legard's voice - same as what they said about JA

It was easier until the end, a lot of people complained they were sick of hearing his voice. It did get a bit tiring. JA was a serial offender for this however, so I'm inclined to agree, but it's close to call.

But Mr C said it took 4 races for Crofty to settle into TV work. Let’s give Legard until Barcelona, which would be Race 5. Watcha think?

Yep, but Leggy was previously an F1 commentator that moved to football and Crofty took over. Does anyone know why this happened? Suddenly I am interested...

People are just saying that because they haven't heard JA's voice in a while. Make them work on back-to-back races and let's see what the people have to see.

Will we get Croft to move up to TV? Maybe, but probably not anytime soon. Legard would probably be on a 3-year contract.

Moving from F1 to football was, and still is, seen as a promotion within the industry, as football will usually have better ratings than F1.

The thing that bugged me about Legard the most was right at the end when he started going 'concentrate, keep it on the road, keep it on the road Vettel' etc. He needs to be reminded Vettel can't hear him.

Other than that, I am not hating him as much as I did James, so I'm willing to give him a few more races before I write him off totally

Contracts can be broken though. How long do we give him before everyone who can just switches to the 5Live feed?

I’ve just realised most of the remaining races finish at midnight, plus the half hour journey home from the pub, 4am sidepodding will be awfully painful if I have early starts at work on Monday

I managed to squeeze in an appearance on SidePodpanel before all the time zone changes happened.

I also managed to change my roster so that I have Mondays off.

Very true. Needell went the wrong way and hit him. What angered me was in the post race interview he made out that he wasn't bothered about putting Nige into hospital and that it was revenge for Nige hitting him in a TVR race earlier in the day.

  • me20/04/2009 at 12:30

Tiff's own F1 career was a footnote to a footnote.

  • Jeremy20/04/2009 at 12:42

I just learnt that Bahrain qualifying isn’t on TV here at all, at the time it would be live there is 9 hours of IPL cricket on instead, and they’re not even showing it delayed

They've been showing F1 in Australia for over 25 years and they still can't get it right. They used to argue on channel 9 that we didn't miss any footage when they showed ads but it was pretty obvious to all that we did. I'll say it again, thank Jebus for the Internets!

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 12:43

I think he need to learn that the job of a tv commentator is to say something other than what we can see/think ourselves.

If that's how you define a commentator, then Murray Walker would've failed badly. Their job, as I pointed out earlier with good ole JR, is to tell a story. Given what's going on, they should be able to tell us more about the cars and the drivers behind them - how their human qualities make them something to behold.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 12:46

Does this make Bernie Ecclestone Vince McMahon? Who, then, is The Undertaker?

    Yes!

The Undertaker HAS to be Max Mosley. I refer to the Ministry of Darkness-era Taker.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen would also have fit the Undertaker mould, given his family background. ;)

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 12:47

Internet? Good in Aust? One day...

It's not the only reason I am a Mark Webber fan but I'll be well pleased if his success can wake up the numptys that run television in this country.

I can't stand how the fans are worse than football hooligans. I can't stand how they have to like Holden or Ford and hate drivers that 'defect'. I can't stand how it wants to be like NASCAR and that they race on God-awful narrow tracks where shoving and shunting is required instead of overtaking.

Bathurst was AWESOME under Group A rules, but they got stroppy when the Aussie cars didn't win and banned everyone else. The Super Tourer Bathurst was also wicked, but the boorish idiots didn't like those cars one bit and a great idea was killed off. It's the lowest common denominator of Motorsport and I just can't see the appeal of it!

I seem to be able to find something to enjoy in all car racing. I can see what others are saying when they criticise certain series, but I just can't get enough motor sport in my life. I managed to watch some of the V8s from Hamilton in NZ before the F1 on Sunday (recorded Sat and Sun for later viewing). There was the usual procession that occurs in a spec series, but having Jamie Whincup (Triple 8 Racing - Roland Dane is a familiar name to the UK) pit early to put him in clean air was a good example of the strategy component that we can all relate to.

Good on you if you like the V8's - and I am sure you're not one of those fans that I referred to before. But watch BTCC and you'll see how primitive the V8's can be. TBH I only watch Bathurst as it has an endurance element. The Normal rounds have no interest for me though...

What would you say is the best way of working out the spread between the teams on a race weekend?:

    a) Take the fastest lap time from that car over the entire weekend

    or

    b) Take an average of both drivers' fastest time over the entire weekend

Mine is looking at both the fastest driver on average along with the drivers' field spread, and the same I did last year with the teams which was finding out which was fastest across the whole season and the overall field spread at the end of the season.

Hard to say, given that there will always be one driver looking better (in some cases, much better) than the other.

But I would pick a). As it is, b) would be get seriously muddled by teamups like Alonso-Piquet and Hamilton-Kovalainen, where there is a significant (or even gaping) margin between the two.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/04/2009 at 14:05

Gavin has just suggested a 3rd way - taking the fastest 3 sector times set by a certain car and work out an ultimate laptime.

    But for Aus and Malaysia…

oh right. yeah they close that for non-accredited media a couple of days after each event.

what actual information contained therein are you after though?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/04/2009 at 14:50

what actual information contained therein are you after though?

Timing info like lap times and pitstop info. You probably have forgotten but in the pub on Wednesday I told you that I want to make some stats for you guys. I was thinking about trying to figure out how much faster a circuit gets over a weekend, how much effect the fuel loads actually have, how consistent a driver is, how long they stint for and how many overtaking moves they make during a race... How does that sound?

  • me20/04/2009 at 14:51

do you have a forix account?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/04/2009 at 14:52

do you have a forix account?

No, but it looks like I might have to get one...

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 14:52

Gavin has just suggested a 3rd way - taking the fastest 3 sector times set by a certain car and work out an ultimate laptime.

Possible, but I'm not so keen on this. That's because car setups will always be a compromise. A car may be set up to go fast through S1 but slow through S2 and S3. Or vice versa. Point is, the ultimate laptime may be unachievable with a single setup. And with the current slow-fast circuits we have (like Bahrain and Singapore), this problem is even more evident.

  • Journeyer20/04/2009 at 14:53

the McLarens aren’t ever that far apart when it comes to fastest laps, Heikki is often quicker, it’s just Lewis is more consistent

FLs, Lewis is comfortably ahead, I think.

    How about Renault?

  • me20/04/2009 at 14:53

No, but it looks like I might have to get one…

Hey, it was good enough for FOM to use during qualifying though…;)

It's a fancy graphic, and a nice target to aim for, but in terms of looking back at it, it doesn't hold that much value. Not for me, anyway.

Scott's looking at the overall car laptime. I actually suggested he try it and also try the other methods to compare, because one might sound good but may not look good on paper... Let him try it out and see where he goes with it...)

    It's up to you, really.

But the best question for me would be, what can you do with the data that would add value to the site Mr C gave out?

  • me20/04/2009 at 15:06

But the best question for me would be, what can you do with the data that would add value to the site Mr C gave out?

Bless you. OK, we're back on then. I'll use that and the FIA media centre to track the weekend progress and see what I can get out of it.

If you guys have any ideas on what you want, just let me know. Maybe if you guys are also doing stats we could collate them somehow?

iTunes is suspiciously un-random when placed in shuffle mode. It's just not possible the way it keeps playing the same songs all the time!

If I had a copy of the video I'd drop.io it for your amusement.

No, actually, I wouldn't. It's only slightly more embarrassing than the one of Mark Hughes pushing me at full tilt through a makeshift chicane in a wheelchair.

I don't think so. I managed to wipe all the play counts when transferring my library to the new Mac, so its penchant for alternating Bush with obscure Adam & The Ants b-sides (and Kasabian!) is inexplicable.

Nah, I like it. Difficult, but SO good when you get it right. It's pretty much won or lost on three corners though.

The times are noticeably closer this time, should be an interesting one.

I fidn you can either creep around the kerb and play it safe or just march your way straight over and gain at least half a second, but at the same time, run a huge risk of losing the car in the corner :(

I usually go for the latter but it's always a gamble. Trouble is, if you go over the kerb and do it too well, you end up going far too fast for the next turn.

  • Lukeh20/04/2009 at 16:18

    whassat mean?

Xbox has 4 green lights on the front to indidicate how many controllers are connected in. If three of these appear red, then your 360 is dying or is dead. Usually it doesnt come back after they appear but I got lucky this time...

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 17:05

    Sony :D

    ?

Basically, Sony kinda tricked Microsoft into releasing the 360 too early. They said the PS3 was going to be out before Christmas 2005, so Microsoft rushed the 360 out in November to beat it. Sony then decided they were going to leave it a year instead, leaving the 360 on the market without Microsoft having tested it thoroughly enough. That is why roughly one in six 360's fail, meaning Microsoft had to extend the warranty to 3 years, costing them millions

If you are very lucky it is. At the other end of the scale, it can overheat so much that the motherboard melts and warps.

Only in Japan, Microsoft can't give the things away over there. World wide at the end of last year it was just over 20 million PS3s, just under 30 million 360s, and 45 million Wiis.

A mile better than GT5 though. I saw a video of the Ferrari F1 on there crashing at a couple of hundred mph and it just bounced off a wall and carried on.

I do have a complete 1966 update for it saved somewhere. Looks great - not as polished as some recent games, but when you've got a Brabham BT11 on your left, and Eagle Westlake on your right, a Ferrari 312 in behind you, a Honda RA273 in front of you and you are in a Lotus 33 heading towards the first corner at Monza...

Who cares that it's not as pretty as modern racing games. It runs better and more importantly, is more realistic.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 17:38

Speaking of realism, these quotes from the Codemasters developers are well worth a read. The level of detail they are going into is like nothing in an F1 game before.

I’ve played many many games from many many developers over the years and there is nobody I would trust more with the F1 licence. If they can’t do the sport proud, nobody can.

In fact, a quote from an executive producer at Codemasters:

Okay, I've said it before and I will say it again... DiRT and GRID were aimed at a different audience to F1. Both of these games have been critical and financial successes for Codemasters, selling far more than each of their predecessors.

F1 will get a different treatment from us, which means heavy on the sim elements for those who want it, along with all the structure and appeal that a more casual 'arcade' fan would expect. Both camps are important to the success of our F1 game and both will get equal respect from us.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 17:48

    Woah… that sounds amazing…

Yup. This is the one that really caught my eye:

From the F1 drivers we've spoken to so far, they have all said that the vibrations the driver gets on some of the more bumpy tracks can make it impossible (and I mean completely) to see. The driver is driving on instinct alone. It's easy to replicate this, but we need some way of scaling this as it won't be fun for the majority of players. I'm all for pushing the sim aspects, but I'm not sure if I want to throw up every time I race at somewhere like Shanghai!

  • Flibster20/04/2009 at 17:49

    *looks at SI Games*

    F1 Manager wuld be tremendous…

That would be ok, but they have spent years building their Player DB, and I don't think they could switch to the F1 style that easily.

GPM2? Never can get bored of that. But I would really like a new, modern version as well.

    Played it far too much.

Still playing RTL Team Manager - it's almost utterly rubbish, but at least it's modern.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/04/2009 at 17:52

This will annoy some of you:

GRID was not a sim. It was tuned for out and out fun and lap times are an irrelevance for this time of game. F1 is different and will feature accurate lap times.

So if you ain't fastest in our GRID challenge, don't worry too much about it ;-)

    What are your options?

Howdy all, anyone had a nice day??

Has Mr C been let out yet?? :P

  • Jackie20/04/2009 at 17:58

    You haven’t noticed?

I'll start to worry when it says RG - Can't do two minutes without Bernie :D

  • Flibster20/04/2009 at 17:58

    You’ll like this then

The long awaited GPRM commercial release WILL therefore take place in 2009. This article will undoubtedly stir the rumour mills a great deal and we should expect some doubters based on the extremely long and difficult path the game has taken thus far, nonetheless, this is a very exciting phase for all involved in the production and testing of the game.

Hmmm. Almost 1/3rd of the way through the year and still in Alpha.

    Not holding out much hope.

I've just been reading Journeyers post on whether Lewis or der Seb is the reinmeister. I have to agree that Vettel is certainly equal to or perhaps better than Lewis, especially considering the cars he's been driving. Mind you I can hear no wrong about Sebastian .. he's so cute, I want to adopt him as my good luck panda

I still can't get enough of his goal against Scotland, they must have showed it 20 times on Saturday! I loved it when he said that even though Wembley has been rebuilt, that Scottish defender is still rooted to the spot.

  • Chris20/04/2009 at 20:01

Who still needs time to buy it or do we have enough to start a tourney?

Dunno. I've got the game, but I haven't added myself to the wiki due to it being in the middle of my exams. If we do it over the summer, I should be ok.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 20:01

Possibly. I'm a lot more likely to be on during weekends though.

Turn 1 wasn't an issue for me. The key is to brake earlier and get as close to the inside kerb as possible. You can clip it but not too much.

  • Lukeh20/04/2009 at 20:05

The corner I was having trouble with was Turn 5 under the bridge round the back of the circuit. The shadow means you just have to pick a line, stick to it and hope you don't clip the inside or hit the outside wall or both.

you should tell joe. he seems pretty responsive to feedback.

i love it for reasons relating to self publishing, micro-payments and the way emagazines are likely going to be the final nail in "physical" magazine's coffin (see autosport online vs. autosport mag for another example).

but what sort of things do you think it's missing and how would you improve it?

  • RG - Can't go two minutes without Timo20/04/2009 at 20:32

you should tell joe. he seems pretty responsive to feedback.

To be fair, he does do it in the three hours after the race and then uploads it.

  • Christine20/04/2009 at 20:33

Also, he did say it is there as a record of what went on, rather than the in-depth stuff, I think perhaps in the first show we did with him.

  • me20/04/2009 at 20:34

To be fair, he does do it in the three hours after the race and then uploads it.

absolutely, and that is impressive on so many levels it puts anything i have ever written, or will ever write to shame.

it doesn't mean it's beyond improvement though.

  • Jackie20/04/2009 at 20:35

but what sort of things do you think it’s missing and how would you improve it?

The problem is that it just doesn't grab my attention, It's not the kind of mag that I can't put down. In fact its a 10 minute read and I don't go back to it.

  • me20/04/2009 at 20:36

The problem is that it just doesn’t grab my attention, It’s not the kind of mag that I can’t put down. In fact its a 10 minute read and I don’t go back to it.

i can see myself using it as a searchable resource for years to come, in a way that f1racing can't be used (because OSX cannot index paper content).

  • Jackie20/04/2009 at 20:36

Don't get me wrong I'm not having a major bitch or anything, it's incredible that they can achieve that after a few hours but it's just not serious enough for my taste

It is true what Joe says, most race reports are fine the day after you have see the race, but months or years down the line they make no sense.

  • me20/04/2009 at 20:40

you should still tell him though.

there's no chance he's going to find your comment amongst 1,000 attempts at a grid time. let him know in his comments.

it's the same with anything we do, if no-one says, how will we every improve?

  • Jackie20/04/2009 at 20:43

you should still tell him though.

You look at James Allen's youtube thing .. most of us didn't care for it but he had loads of compliments on his site. I feel that's probably true for GP+ as well, maybe I'm the exception to the rule

  • me20/04/2009 at 20:44

It is true what Joe says, most race reports are fine the day after you have see the race, but months or years down the line they make no sense.

absolutely, and i'm even thinking we could do with buying last year's back issues too.

my mac still needs to index images better though. it will happen eventually, but what i want now is the ability to search for all pics of red cars embedded in pdfs in the same way i can search for any mention of ferrari.

the day that happens, i don't think i'll ever buy paper again.

  • Jackie20/04/2009 at 20:44

absolutely, and i’m even thinking we could do with buying last year’s back issues too.

You don't have to, they are all on the site for free

doesn't change a thing. feedback is important, positive or negative.

have whitmarsh's brawngp comments been discussed today?

"It would now be hypocritical, because it happens to be painful for us because [BrawnGP] are competitive to not want to give them a proportion of the distribution under Concorde."

Was saying about this to earlier with lou, it's nice to see that he actually has a bit of sense to say this. Plus he mentioned about supporting Brawn still with mercedes even though they're obviously the better car at the moment which is good, nice to see that FOTA will be comming together and actually sitting down to calm things down a bit.

It was always going to get heated though wasnt it? It's no surprise we've already had kerfuffles between teams

  • me20/04/2009 at 20:56

Nope, but he didn’t say anything other than the obvious… :)

the important thing is that they're willing to go on record and say it though. before that it was just flav bashing brawn and brawn not responding.

it was and haug is spot on when he says:

"If they got a different interpretation of the rules we need to question ourselves – did we all influence the rules in the right way, were they written in the correct way"

and the answer clearly is "no". it does occur to me that flav is best mates with bernie, and bernie no like FOTA...

any idea why that might be? is it a money thing as he suggests, or because his chubby car isn't fast enough?

Chubby (lol) car isn't fat enough and he needs a sponsor to replace ING next year i reckon. A little desparation and attention seeking perhaps.

  • Steven Roy20/04/2009 at 21:42

I’ve had two blood tests, many blood pressure tests, an EKG AND EEG test, and today I had a physical. But nobody has the guts to tell me I am perfectly healthy - they keep referring to their seniors who make them do more tests on me.

    Gavin,

I have only been ill twice since I left school. Once was chickenpox and the other was one of these things which gave multiple symptoms including massive lethargy, sore everything etc etc etc. I went to the quack and did blood tests. All negative. He suggested more tests as he had no clue what was wrong. Another week another set of negatives. I went for 6 weeks ad had 6 lots of negatives for absolutely everything. The only thing he found out in 6 visits was I had a high white blood cell count which meant either whatever I had was making white blood cells or my body was making them to fight whatever it was.

The last time I saw him he said there was one test he could run but not to worry if it came back positive because his dog had had the disease and it was fine now. By that time I was fed up and feeling fine so I never went back. Many years later I have never had a problem.

There is a lot that medicine does not understand. If you feel fine don't worry.

  • Christine20/04/2009 at 21:42

:) so was it you? :P

No way. I can still taste the fluff from Christmas.

Wow. Third time now? Shame the 360 can be so fragile. I leave mine on a lot when I'm not even on it, and mine's been fine so far, had it since December 07.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 22:31

I technically have a box for it, the one they sent in jan when sending it back to me ;)

    How tragically convenient!

I read online about a guy who needed to send his 360 back but they said he had to provide a box himself, so he was trying to get enough people with broken consoles to club together and hire a shipping container to send them all to Microsoft at once. Don't know if he ever succeeded though.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 22:31

Yeah, you said about how Sony forced Microsoft to rush the 360's release by tricking them into thinking the PS3 would be released at the same time. That way Sony could see the console's problems and work around them to make the PS3 a much more solid machine on it's release.

Yup. Little to no issues with the PS3, tonnes of issues with 360. There is even a new kind of failure since the system update last year.

Spotify is better at finding new stuff. Last.fm is better at being a community and is a lot more user-friendly IMO.

I stopped using playlists and deleted them, I really ought to make some again, try both out.

Nothing beats buying the CD and ripping it in whatever format you like.

  • Joe20/04/2009 at 23:11

Nothing beats buying the CD and ripping it in whatever format you like.

I agree with the buying the cd, because having the physical copy there, as well as the case and booklet, that's great. But I wouldn't do that for any album, I'd usually "acquire" it first and then think about buying it.

Noooo! Please say it was Aperture 1.x Version 2 is much much better than Lightroom.

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:18

Noooo! Please say it was Aperture 1.x Version 2 is much much better than Lightroom.

nope. aperture 2 versus lightroom 2.

adobe has better features, responds faster to new camera specs (aperture still doesn't support our lumix months after it's release), and is actually faster to use on my mbp.

lightroom has better presets, a better browser and integrates better with other adobe apps.

    what does aperture do well?

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:20

Aperture + Photoshop Elements is cheaper than Lightroom alone and does everything I need and more.

why take two applications into the shower...?

  • Andy+Taylor20/04/2009 at 23:28

    what does aperture do well?

You got me on the Lumix, I've no idea why it takes so long for the support to appear.

    Things I like:

Quick Preview - makes it work a lot faster when browsing and rating.

    Smart Albums

Integration - the ability to open jpeg versions of all my files in pretty much any other application.

Full screen mode with the Head-up Displays

    Tethering.

  • Andy+Taylor20/04/2009 at 23:31

why take two applications into the shower…?

Because you still need Photoshop for layer editing. The point is I no longer need Photoshop CS.

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:31

Quick Preview - makes it work a lot faster when browsing and rating.

    adobe bridge

    Tethering.

    as in, iphone tethering?

fair enough on the other points, either i didn't see them, or just didn't need them in aperture.

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:33

Because you still need Photoshop for layer editing. The point is I no longer need Photoshop CS.

neither do i. but i already have fireworks for website stuff and that does layers just fine.

i guess it depends on your workflow, but i know lou has photoshop, therefore i'm just making her aware that other options are also available.

  • Andy+Taylor20/04/2009 at 23:34

    adobe bridge

But that's another program, Aperture does it all in one place.

    as in, iphone tethering?

No, camera tethering. It only works for a limited number of dSLRs (Lou will be OK with her Nikon I think), but you plug a camera in via USB, take a picture and it appears in Aperture automagically.

  • Steven Roy20/04/2009 at 23:35

How hard can it be to keep track of things in a space station when everything you do is videoed and discussed on the radio before, during and after?

How do you lose a flywheel on a space station?

yes and no. it integrates well and retains an almost identical look and feel. it's not like you have to learn another application. also, if you have photoshop (or in my case fireworks), it provides a common link between the two.

like i said, depends on your workflow.

No, camera tethering. It only works for a limited number of dSLRs (Lou will be OK with her Nikon I think), but you plug a camera in via USB, take a picture and it appears in Aperture automagically.

Download the last.fm app. Open your music player, or go to an artist page. Play music. After a short time refresh your profile page and watch the stats roll in. Eventually it'll narrow down some recommendations for you.

It does indeed. It's much more random than Last.fm. Last.fm's player adjusts itself according to your taste, and you can have all sorts of tags influencing it. Spotify isn't as advanced at that.

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:41

what does it do that last.fm doesn’t though? am confused why it’s of interest.

I don't know really. I just use it so I can listen to music without having to paying for it.

  • chris evans20/04/2009 at 23:44

Music recommendations were requested in the last.fm group, so I added some.

    I just did likewise

  • Andy+Taylor20/04/2009 at 23:44

Nah, I mean parties or weddings

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:44

Yep. We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one then :)

having tried both, i'd encourage everyone to try both. demos are free and available from both companies.

no question that apple created the market, but i think adobe have already trumped them and will improve faster. however, in the end, they'll both copy each others features.

  • Pat W20/04/2009 at 23:45

    I just did likewise

How on earth did you get 3000 plays in 20 minutes?

  • Scott Woodwiss20/04/2009 at 23:45

Here's some differences between Spotify and Last.fm I found on a Wordpress blog:

last.fm limits the number of times you can listen to a song for free

    Spotify inserts adverts between songs

last.fm generates a radio station based on an artist or a tag; so you won’t just get songs from the artist you named, you’ll also get songs from other artists. Spotify lets you play specific artists only, or just specific albums

last.fm automatically “scrobbles” your music and lets you re-find things you’ve played before

last.fm puts a lot of focus on the social elements, on sharing what you’ve scrobbled, on scrobbling in groups. It’s just as much social network as it is music service

Spotify does the reverse, it puts the focus on music. There are social aspects to it, but you have to hunt them down (they’re not obvious to start with)

  • me20/04/2009 at 23:45

Not between words, but some people like to put two spaces between sentences.

Has anyone ever heard of putting two spaces between words when you’re typing a report? Someone told me I should do it, but i think theyre waffling?

Nope. 1.5 or 2 line spaces between lines, otherwise it's one space between words, two after a full stop.

Imagine what it would look like if you used two spaces between every word?

  • Lukeh21/04/2009 at 00:00

Nope. 1.5 or 2 line spaces between lines, otherwise it’s one space between words, two after a full stop.

Has anyone ever heard of putting two spaces between words when you’re typing a report? Someone told me I should do it, but i think theyre waffling?

yup, it stems from typewriters and monospaced fonts. you shouldn't need to do it any more, but i still do as i'm a creature of habit :)

You should put two spaces after a sentence not a word.

modern fonts mean that it's no longer necessary to even do that. html doesn't support double spacing anyway.

I know Word used to a single space between sentences as a grammatical error. I don't know if it still does cos i have used double spaces for years.

only us oldies. i don't think it's be taught that way in schools for sometime.

in fact doing it breaks most typographers designs and is frowned upon nowadays. i'll see if i can find a source.

  • littlepurplegoth21/04/2009 at 00:05

    two spaces after full stops.

    two carriage returns between paragraphs.

two spaces at start of line to make a bullet point list if no 'bullet+indent' function, but only within a paragraph setting. Its common for bulleted lists to have 1 1/2 line spacing as well (so 2 line if already using 1 1/2 line).

Standard for 'reports' is to use 1 1/2 line spacing if point size is 14pt (possibly 12pt) and a sans serif font. 2 line spacing if point size used is 12pt or less and a serif font. If a combination of factors then usually convention demands 2 line spacing. Which is all great if you have a programme that will do it for you, or an old fashioned manual type writing with a line spacing setting (usually on the right hand side of the typewriter to avoid getting it bashed by accident).

Its still taught in schools - its in the national curriculum under 'ICT core skills'. It applies to *printed* materials, and to 'materials that may end up being printed for distribution or record'.

Probably about the only bit of the NC that I could, grudgingly, admit to being just about in agreement with then........

Mind you - most uni will now specify how you are to do things in the academic standards doc that you'll be given when you enroll..... so much for the 'old days' of finding out about 'academic presentation' the hard way (i.e. raiding the library and copying what the OU say to do and hoping that its acceptable to ones lecturers/tutors).

everything i'm reading and have read on the subject of typography is suggesting it's a throwback to monospaced and typewriter fonts.

i think the world has moved on and left us behind on this one.

You could, but the comments won't appear until you have placed the resulting paper into an envelope placed a stamp on the envelope, addressed it to Sidepodcast Towers (this could be tricky) and place into a post box

Then you'll have to wait for the envelope to be delivered and opened and the contents to be re typed or scanned into a computer for posting.

I estimate your comments will probably turn up for the next race.

Hmmm - wonder if there would be a c/o one racing team or another option?

Or of course there is always the Royal Mails 'electronic delivery' service. Usually its supposed to go the other way (turn your electronic file into a hard copy that goes in the post local to its destination) but I'm sure that RM could work it backwards :-D

  • Steven Roy21/04/2009 at 00:32

Sometimes I think NASA don't get the laws of physics. They are planning on sending an unmanned plane the size of a Cessna to Mars. Not flying there as an aeroplane. They have a slightly better grasp of physics than that. It flies there folded up in a rocket and is dropped in an aero shell(think of an Apollo capsule). While it is dropping at 17,000mph the aero shell opens and the plane comes out, unfolds itself and starts to fly like a plane.

Unfolding into the shape of a plane at 17,000 mph does not sound to me like the most mechanically sensible way to do this.

  • chris evans21/04/2009 at 00:33

Am I being stupid, or can you only listen to the last.fm app if you leave it open? If so, that's rubbish.

The only thing i can think of is that space is a vacuum, so no air or gravity, so no aero force or otherwise acting on the plane, so that shouldnt be an issue. And if they do it at that 17,000mph they can save the fuel they'd need to re-accelerate it back up to speed.

  • me21/04/2009 at 00:37

It is going to do this in the atmosphere of Mars not in free space. The Martian atmosphere is thinner than Earth's so it would not be the same as doing it here but if I was going to design aa mission that took a year to get somewhere I would want something with a good deal less chance of failing.

iPhone/iPod Touch software 3 will run on all iPhone/iPod Touch models. There will be a charge for the iPod Touch upgrade, iPhones get it free.

Some features will not work on the Original iPhone because it has a different Bluetooth chip.

Is that only on the new model or is it a firmware update for old ones as well?

iPhone/iPod Touch software 3 will run on all iPhone/iPod Touch models. There will be a charge for the iPod Touch upgrade, iPhones get it free.

Some features will not work on the Original iPhone because it has a different Bluetooth chip.

Any more info on this? Got a link or a release date?

Have you been trained in British English or American English BTW?

The reason I ask is that you have an Indian accent but sometimes I hear amercanisms in it ;)

Most definitely American. :) We were an American colony for the better part of 40 years. We were only under the Brits for a year or less. :D

No surprise with the Americanisms... but Indian? You've gotta be kidding. :P Indian accent is soooooo far from our accent. :D

That is a VERY good ad.

One wonders what Audi is thinking of their marketing people, though. They were just soooo asking for it. Hats off to BMW for seeing the opening to respond. ;)

    Morning ladies and gentlemen :)

It's 9am and my work for the day is done other than having the monkey come and pick up the servers and take them to their new home.

Time to go see what films are on the SkyHD box.

Your accent is a little similar, don't you think? Having said that, you're the first person I know from your country, so what would I know? ;-) You do have a very clear and easy to listen to voice though!

A wee bit, perhaps? But I never wanted to get their accent! :P

Better than Allen and Legard, perhaps? I'd love to take their commentary mic. ;)

Hahahahahaha! Brilliant. Not sure if Bentley have anything to do with the other ads, though. :P
