Waste not, want not - the new ethos os F1
It's Qualifying Saturday! We're at Barcelona and on any normal year we'd expect Saturday to be the most exciting part of the weekend before sleepily watching the cars drive 60 laps stuck behind each other on Sunday. But this year, things are different - people can overtake! People are actually looking forward to the race! No, friends, you are not dreaming - this is really happening.
This Weekend In F1
- Lewis Hamilton Talks Spanish: In a further attempt to charm Spanish fans, Lewis Hamilton has appeared on a Spanish talk show. Lewis was invited to the fictional village of Crinkley Culo where he was forced into a glass cabinet by the show's mascot, Señor Blobby and gunged by the show's host.
- Super Long DRS Zone: Despite concerns in Turkey that the DRS zone had been constructed as to make overtaking a little too easy, the Spanish race will have the longest zone of all. The drivers will be allowed to use their DRS for the entire length of the pit straight, though the zone follows a long, fast right-hander so the cars won't be tucked up together as they were in Turkey. If the F1 2010 game is anything to go by, all the cars will have crashed out at turn 15 anyway.
- Webber on top in Friday Practice: Mark Webber needs to start putting Vettel in his place soon before his "Number Two Driver" status becomes more than just a biting irony. He slammed to the top of both practice sessions to show his speed, but we know Vettel always has something up his sleeve - notably his pointy index finger.
- Teams could protest blown diffusers: The FIA have made it clear that they still consider the off-throttle blown diffuser to be outside of the regulations, despite not formally revising the regulations. But then, apparently they consider flexing wings outside of the regulations but that hasn't stopped one team...
- Hard Tyre Debuts: Pirelli have brought their hard tyre to a race for the first time, and the drivers aren't happy. Apparently the tyre is 'hard to drive' and 'a real struggle', so the poor drivers might have to work hard for their million dollar salaries. I'm sure most of the GP2 drivers wouldn't mind being on the hard tyre in an F1 race this weekend if the current pilots aren't ready for it.

- Webber Dominates Monaco: Mark Webber wins brilliantly at Monaco to take the lead of the championship; many are starting to wonder why Vettel yet to establish himself in the championship yet; Button loses his lead in the championship after McLaren leave a bung in his air intake.
- Tyre Bid down to Michelin and Pirelli: Stefano Domenicali admits that Pirelli and Michelin are the only serious choices for the 2011 tyre supply, dismissing Avon-Cooper. Can you believe they still hadn't sorted the tyre supplier, this time last year? I admit, I was in favour of Michelin at the time, but I'm very happy with Pirelli.
- Lotus "ready to fight established teams": After a great performance in Monace, Heikki Kovalainen says Lotus were ready to step up and start making moves on the established teams. One year on and they still have yet to make any real headway, though they are getting closer...

- Massa: "HRT Ready to push into Q2": Hispania driver Felipe Massa says the team is ready to start getting through to the second session of qualifying. "We are now only one second away from the Toro Rosso. This could be our season."
- "Schumacher needs to find his feet": Ross Brawn says people need to give Michael Schumacher time to get into the rhythm of F1. "Don't forget, he was away for three years. You shouldn't expect him to be on winning form straight away." Schumacher is currently 87 points behind championship leader, Rosberg.
- Williams concerned by lack of pace: Frank Williams has expressed concerns about the pace of the Williams car. He insists that there are fundamental engineering problems with the FW34 and that it has nothing to do with his star drivers, Bill Gates and The Sultan of Brunai.

I gated out the background noise as much as possible without affecting the interview, but at the race track, it was a decent job.
Didn't have a proper mic for trackside either (just a Sony dictaphone), so I've been surprised at how good the quality was considering the surrounding noise.
I'm putting plans in place for episode 2 at the minute.

I think Kimi would be doing even better if there had not been so many yellows. It's hard to understand what the truck is doing and how to race if you race 3 laps and then have 5 yellow laps You just can't settle into a rythm like that

I think he has done really well. First NASCAR race, first oval race, never run at this time of day on the track
Spent most of the race P12 to P15 and didn't look out of place and he never looked like losing control even when he touched the wall

It was a journey, that's for sure. I wonder if Kimi will think it's amateur hour and not go back? Or maybe he had a great time. Had someone been able to speak to him, we'd know.
I think he will run some more races. I saw a suggestion earlier than he may do the Nationwide race in two weeks time. He is looking for something else to try and he can't be disappointed with today's performance
It's impressive to me that he is willing to jump right in and run side by side midpack with something so different. And that must have been challenging for that little place inside him that is most competitive and trying to learn so much in such a short time. Hopefully it was a fun challenge for him.
I am sure he will have enjoyed it and he will want to try again to see what he could do. All those yellows made it way more difficult for him. It's a shame modern drivers don't try all aspects of the sport. At least he can do that now. Who knows if he likes ovals he may try the Indycar end of season race
I'd love to see him in an Indy car, but this is fun for now, too. As long as he finds his life fulfilling, that's really all that matters. And if it's a race series I can see somehow (rallies are hard to find here), then it's that much better for me.
Rally coverage is hard to find anywhere. The coverage and profile has really dropped here compared to 5 or ten years ago.
I think whatever he does will generate interest. NASCAR is supposed to be very insular but you only have to see how much coverage he got tonight. I am sure Indycar will have noticed and will be chasing him.

here is a techie question. Will a region 1 encoded DVD play on my mac? Do they just not play on DVD players?
I doubt it, the Mac will be encoded to region 2. That said, VLC media player has tended to ignore any region locks with stuff before on Windows... and I know it's a pretty popular media player for Mac so that may be of use? Will do some digging for you and find out

I'm a bit amazed that Greek isn't out in region 2 areas. Less obscure american comedies have gotten releases here so it's a shame it hasn't been brought over here/onto region 2.
But yeah, if you do end up buying them from region 1 and importing them I'd say VLC is your best/only hope. As far as I know the firmware for the dvd drives themselves are why they'll be locked on any kind of hardware rather than it being a mac or a dvd player or a tv etc. So blame the drive and industry being stoopid for having these silly region locks. #geekresponse
It has been really lovely here all day and now it's clouding over quite darkly, the rain is supposed to stay away this evening!
Chapter 1 is on region 2 dvd but the others aren't ah well.
Have just noticed that on Play, not even a full season! How silly.
ah no they aren't. it's due to the writers strike all those years ago. Cause while that was going on they released the only episodes they had created on DVD (which was the first half of series 1) so they released it as a Chapter. Then after that, they just followed suit with all the others. So 4 series 6 DVDs. :)
Ohhh that stupid writers strike, scrubs suffered a very similar fate except they just didn't bother with the stuff they were gonna do during the strike hence why one of the seasons on dvd is like, 10 episodes where every other season is 20+ episodes. So annoying!
These american shows have such long seasons, no wonder they're starting to split them over 2 halfs of the year (like Doctor Who has done now). Although I would love 15-20 episodes of something like Spooks a series :D

For my good day out I went to a cafe that is only 5 minutes away from my house that I'd never been to before. Brunch was amazingly tasty, plus the cafe had a cute dog. Now I feel I must rectify my three years of staying away and go back lots :)

I'm not sure too many will mind. There were virtually no practice stoppages, making nearly constant qualifying runs for the entire day.
No Briscoe in the field, four of the five Andretti-Autosport cars not qualified. Tagliani on pole - amazing result.
I can't believe how bad the Andretti cars have been. I read through the comments and I was amazed. They should be behind the Ganassis and Penskes. I know the Andretti luck at Indy is legendary but Marco should at least be able to easily make P24

I started watching the build up to that hours ago and gave up as it just kept going on and on with no sign of it actually starting. I forgot to go back to it after Indy pole qualifying
I clicked by an hour plus into it and they still hadn't even started!
He hit something like a drain or something embedded in the grass he was trying to go and do donuts on.

I have sensitive ears and usually at parties, the music gets put on so loud that I can barely be in the same room as it. At this particular party, the man running the disco was nice enough to have it at a volume where I could get close enough to get to the dance floor.
I think I managed to keep it off curtains/rugs/electrical appliances. It put me off doing any more.

Thank you. Not sure many of the shapes I threw were recognised dance sequences (due to lack of practise, the only relevant dance I could remember was the Macarena) but I had lots of fun.
