Hello once again, another Friday is upon us and the weekend is upon the horizon. Sadly there is no Formula 1 this weekend, however there shall be Superleague Racing but that’s then and this is now. We’ll just have to wait another week until we visit Istanbul so until then we will have to find other things to keep us occupied! So what wisdom will the bullet points bring?

  • Here’s a shocker for you – the FIA have admitted they’ve made a bit of a slip up with their rules regarding the last lap safety car rule. They released a statement yesterday regarding their view and they shall rectify their rules soon we can assume. Not every day you see the FIA doing that now, is it? However I still think Schumacher shouldn’t have been penalised, which may be a controversial statement to make in these parts I suppose!
  • Despite an assignment deadline on the horizon, I spent my afternoon yesterday enjoying a new karting game on the Playstation 3 called ModNation Racers. In that time I managed to somehow find the time to create myself Monaco! As well as this, check out my Mini Rubens in his Mini Brawn! It’s a fantastic game though, and has already been released in North America with the EU and Australia getting the game today (on PSP too). Definitely recommended if you love your Mario Kart! Interestingly the championship in the game is called the MRC. MRC... Mr C... coincidence? I think not!
  • I don’t have much else to share so why not remember some awesome Sidepodmemories? This week I’ve been remembering just how fantastic the Sidepodpanels were not only to take part in but to listen back on. If you’ve not heard them before, you have to give them a listen. Also, Sidepodradio took place last year in 12 hours of completely awesomeness, and another part of our history at Sidepodcast that is full of laughter and classic moments. What are some of your favourite Sidepodcast moments?

That’s another Friday daily post sorted and dusted and expressed for your entertainment. There’s been rumblings in the comments of a possible meet-up at the Pure Tech Racing Simulator Centre, so definitely take a look at that if you’re interested. Other notes of interest include it being 42 days until the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010 begins and it being 98 days until the big meet up at Spa Franchorchamp! Exciting times! Nevertheless, let’s get through today and comment our way into another weekend.

    the awesomeness that is the Internet retailer sending games a few days before it's release meaning it often arrives early is awesome. Wales is still welsh. :p

    This is good news: http://darkufo.blogspot.com/2010/05/finale-of-lost-to-be-brought-to.html

    Driven by fan demand - and regardless of the international time difference - the non-subtitled finale will be simultaneously broadcast with the U.S. West Coast telecast (May 23, from 9:00 p.m., PT) on Sky1 in the UK, Fox Italia and Telecom Italia in Italy, Cuatro Spain, Fox Spain and Portugal, Digiturk Turkey, HOT Israel. CTV Canada will broadcast the finale at the same time as the U.S. East Coast.

    In total, 59 countries around the world will air the final episode from 24-48 hours after the U.S. broadcast, with subtitles for viewers in non-English speaking territories.

    This is a great blog post: http://jeremynicholas.co.uk/?p=1429

    Love this quote:

    God invented stages so we could stand on them. OK maybe it wasn’t actually God, but Jesus was a carpenter and he probably built a few stages for the Nazareth Speakers Association in his time. When he was talking to his followers he probably couldn’t afford a stage, so he would stand on a hill. We’ve all heard of the Sermon on the Mount. Well we wouldn’t have heard of it, if it had been the Sermon in the Hollow, because no-one would have been able to see or hear Jesus.

  • Marilene Riddle21/05/2010 at 10:17

    What are the results?

    Federer faces: Soderling, Jo-Wil Tsonga, M-Andy

    Rafa faces: Novak, R-Andy, Fernando

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:18

    What are the results?

    Rafael can't be taken out by Soderling again because he's on the other side of the draw :D

    Most of the Spanish clay-court specialists are on Rafa's side, he also gets Djokovic. Roger has Andy Murray on his. I think Rogers looks a little easier but I don't have enough knowledge to actually analyse it properly :D

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:18

    Seriously, my eyes glaze over at a lot of tennis conversations. I know I like the sport, and I know which players I like, but when people start talking about who has the best groundstrokes I stop talking because I don't know how to judge them.

  • Marilene Riddle21/05/2010 at 10:20

    bye Mandy, nice knowing you.

    :D

    and Ernie!

    Well I don't really rate him. :P

    I don't like Fernando facing Rafa again. Why can't he be on Federer's side instead? :(

    pah, that stuff is over-rated. You know what they are up to off the court!

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:21

    He makes me laugh so I like him :D

    I don't like Fernando facing Rafa again. Why can't he be on Federer's side instead? :(

    because Nando Rafa matches are epic Spanish affairs and I love them with all my heart.

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:22

    I really don't! I love Mirka like I love Catherine though, but it's much easier to learn what Catherine is up to.

  • Marilene Riddle21/05/2010 at 10:22

    because Nando Rafa matches are epic Spanish affairs and I love them with all my heart.

    But... but that means Nando has a teeny-weeny chance of going through! I fancy him against Federer more than him against Rafa (whom I suspect he is mentally weak against).

  • paul21/05/2010 at 10:23

    I really don't! I love Mirka like I love Catherine though, but it's much easier to learn what Catherine is up to.

    but Roger's not allowed to lose!

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:23

    I get it back when the Australian Open is in town. Stalking 268 players is easier than 20 drivers.

    I dont believe that

    Seriously, my eyes glaze over at a lot of tennis conversations. I know I like the sport, and I know which players I like, but when people start talking about who has the best groundstrokes I stop talking because I don't know how to judge them.

    I like Sharapova, and I can assure you it has nothing to do with ground strokes ;)

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:24

    Which is like in a whole 3/4 year's time?

    :( I'm going on a kind of tennis venue tour when I am in Europe but with no actual tennis being played at the time, that doesn't count as stalking

  • paul21/05/2010 at 10:25

    Is she still around?

  • Marilene Riddle21/05/2010 at 10:25

    Is she still around?

    yes she has returned from her shoulder injury

  • Amy21/05/2010 at 10:26

    she is, she's rrrrrrrubbish now though. Out injured for such a long time and not quite there again yet.

    Classic case: Ana ivanovic.

    Like Ana "I was ranked number 1 less than 2 years ago and now I'm ranked 41st" Ivanovic? Good times. I don't like her, I just like her Wimbledon dress :D

    When is Wimbledon this year?

    As much as I'm not a tennis fan I do put a few matches on as 'background' during Wimbledon. I think its the law as a big event. Like the Grand National, I don't care for horse racing but you have to watch the National :)

  • Christine21/05/2010 at 10:36

    It's always the last week in June, first of July.

    they're so mean the way they have a slam in January and then nothing for months then BAM two a fortnight apart. The US Open is on while I am in Europe so I'm quite hoping I get to watch a Roger match while I'm in Switzerland.

    That's a fair point. I can easily see an F1 without HRT or Virgin next year.

  • Jon Waldock21/05/2010 at 12:35

    I say good on 'em - should be interesting to see what happens with Geoff Willis designing next year's car...

    I completely disagree, HRT's problems aren't Dallaras fault, they are completely HRT and Campos related.

    Dallara can make a car faster than their current GP2 car.

    Dallara can make a car faster than their current GP2 car.

    I don't like that they subcontracted to Dallara when nearly all the other firms did their design work mostly in-house. I also dislike that Dallara stopped work because of money troubles for Campos, which made the situation all the more worse.

  • me21/05/2010 at 12:38

    if they get paid.

    I don't see what they could have done, Dallara work based on things they know going to happen, if you know you need to build 24 GP2 cars for next season you know you're going to get the money to do that. The money wasn't ever their in F1 and so to build an expensive F1 would have only caused them money issues

  • me21/05/2010 at 12:38

    exactly! I believe that Dallara could design an awesome car if they were given the money to do it.

    I also dislike that Dallara stopped work because of money troubles for Campos, which made the situation all the more worse.

    that's business though?

    It is. Which is why Campos should have tried to make their own car. Work stopped when the money ran out, when maybe if the team were designing and building it they could have carried on.

  • me21/05/2010 at 12:42

    To my knowledge, a Dallara-designed car hasn't exactly been the best way to win in F1.

    They are good at what they do though - they helped design the Audi R8 Le Mans car and the Dallara Indy car ain't too bad.

  • me21/05/2010 at 12:45

    That was down to bad management as well as lack of money wasn't it?

    if hrt wasn't badly managed. why was the man in charge ousted?

    so far as i can see, an internal project, or an outsourced project would suffer the same.

  • Jon Waldock21/05/2010 at 12:45

    To my knowledge, a Dallara-designed car hasn't exactly been the best way to win in F1.

    I never said it would win but it would a) not be slower than a GP2 car and b) be somewhere with the new teams/back of old teams

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 12:45

    I don't like that they subcontracted to Dallara when nearly all the other firms did their design work mostly in-house. I also dislike that Dallara stopped work because of money troubles for Campos, which made the situation all the more worse.

    I don't have a problem with subcontracting and I was looking forward to seeing what Dallara could do, unfortunately they were left with no choice but to stop working, and it has damaged their reputation.

    Indeed. So why not carry on and then sell the design to another team? There were certainly potential customers out there...

    Thats a problem with me. A team enters F1 and doesn't act in a way that gives them a chance to win, no matter how unrealistic.

    Why? A new team was never going to win anything. So why not spend the first year or two having someone build your car while you get your facilities together?

  • me21/05/2010 at 12:49

    Interesting. I've seen comments from some who try to pin the slow car on Dallara. Now it might have been slow anyway, probably will have been, but not this bad..

    plus it survived it's first crash test on sunday.

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 12:50

    I agree about Virgin though. Can't see them lasting much longer TBH...

    Virgin are fine, they've got backing. They are waiting for the RRA to make a bigger dent in the other teams. Whether it will or won't is another matter.

    Well yeah, OK, but how do you expect HRT to catch up, when they are so far behind that they either (a) waste this year on an absolutely hopeless car or (b) waste next year on trying to fix up this years?

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 12:51

    There were comments from Kolles around Bahrain time that it wasn't up to current F1 spec. This might have been him trying to get out of the deal though.

    I think Dallara telling Hispania that the car would see no development in 2010 from them a few weeks back was the last straw. F1 does not work that way even if finances do.

    This is a good idea and something tells me Hispania will produce a car worth seeing next year. Colin Kolles' determination is not to be underestimated.

    To my knowledge, a Dallara-designed car hasn't exactly been the best way to win in F1. {Comment #161}

    My opinion is somewhere between the two. Dallara is perfectly capable of producing a F1 car but a reasonably well-resourced factory specialising in F1 will always do a better job than an organisation whose resources must necessarily be split across a vast array of series with only the resources given to it by customers. With Dallara, a team can survive, but to thrive it must do its own design work.

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 13:09

    Hmmm. This actually opens the door to a collaboration with Epsilon Euskadi...

    Good point.. Spanish manufacturer with all the facilities to build a car, meet Spanish team needing to build a car and all the facilities...

  • me21/05/2010 at 13:09

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 13:10

    This is a good idea and something tells me Hispania will produce a car worth seeing next year. Colin Kolles' determination is not to be underestimated.

    If they made it themselves I wouldn't expect much..

    a well funded Dallara would do as well as HRT in my opinion, Dallara were never going to be race winners, but then neither are HRT

    the entry. it's a neat solution that will allow both Epsilon and ART onto the grid.

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2010 at 13:12

    Haven't all this cars been rubbish? {Comment #204}

    All this year's cars have been rubbish, but last time Colin Kolles was in full charge of a team, back in 2007, it scored a point despite being on a budget of about £1.59. With a year of experience and the ability to determine its own fate, Hispania still won't produce a car to trouble the likes of Williams but it should improve to the point where it's comfortably fighting with Saubers and Toro Rossos, which means it should nick the occasional point despite Lotus looking like it will do the same.

    if hrt wasn't badly managed. why was the man in charge ousted?

    so far as i can see, an internal project, or an outsourced project would suffer the same. {Comment #163}

    It ran out of money because the plan was based on sponsorship that didn't materialise. It's not clear whether that's poor management, a lousy economy or both. The one person prepared to put in money wanted his choice of manager, and therefore...

    You think Kolles could get them scoring odd points in 2011?!?

    If they designed their own car they would effectively be starting again, there is no chance they'd score points unless EVERYONE crashed

  • Journeyer21/05/2010 at 13:18

    i wouldn't under-estimate geoff willis - the man who turned around BAR (and to a certain extent, RBR). they're not necessarily starting from scratch - they can't unlearn what they've already learned with that dallara.

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2010 at 13:18

    Indeed. So why not carry on and then sell the design to another team? There were certainly potential customers out there...

    not with an entry. {Comment #169}

    Yet. The situation could change next month when the successful applicant is announced. Then again it might not. You and I wouldn't bank on it, but you can bet Dallara won't be backward in offering its services to a suitably well-heeled F1 entrant because 2010 proved it can build something fast enough for F1 (just) on tiny resources. A credit check before work commences might be in order though ;)

    Toro Rosso is designing its own car for the first time since the Minardi days this year and it's scored 4 points already this season. Yes it scored 8 points last year under a less generous awarding system, but the season is only a third of the way through.

  • me21/05/2010 at 13:23

    I believe he's a consultant. There's a few months to go before he'd need to be upgraded. Then again, drivers have been consultants while racing their team's cars in the past, so maybe no upgrade would be necessary...

    It can't be - they can't use Red Bull's IP due to the regulations (either directly or via a third party) so the only way the Toro Rosso could have passed scrutineering is if it was their own design.

    They seem to talk to Mike and/or Tony before and after each race. Lots of stuff about the team yet we hear little of Virgin for example {Comment #197}

    Possibly because Virgin knows it needs to concentrate on its performance and is still basically Manor (not a team noted for its garrulousness in the lower formulae) while Lotus is a team with a sound base and led by extroverts.

    If it is, then why aren't the other teams jumping up and down on it? Especially since Frank Williams and Colin Kolles, two of the biggest driving forces behind the rule being imposed, are still in F1 leading independent teams? It's not even like we're in danger of dropping below 10 teams any more or that new teams are unable to get in without resorting to such measures, which were the counter-argument.

    i would guess that they can't prove it, or don't want to rock any boats right now. look at it this way:

    are str stealing anyone else's sponsors? no.

    are the str drivers blowing anyone away? no.

    would it do the sport any good to kick str out right now with stefan waiting in the wings? no.

    Obtaining IP from another team (either directly or via a third party) is against the regulations this year. In theory, they don't have to make their own car provided that the organisation doing the manufacturing isn't the same one as Red Bull's (or any other F1 team), but the design is now subject to the same restriction.

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2010 at 13:41

    the came out with the exact same nose design this year and the drivers are sharing the simulator. it can't be different. {Comment #231}

    A nose design does not a car make, even if you could prove that the designers hadn't come to the same conclusion independently, and the drivers could share the same simulator whatever car they had provided. In fact, the simulator would deliver a lot of its benefit without even bothering to do any design adjustments to take the differing cars into account.

    I have spoken to a guy at Pure Tech Racing on the phone and he has given me a rough idea of what we could organise for a meet-up. He has said that what we could do is block book the simulators so that effectively I think we could do 2 full race sessions in one day. He has given me his e-mail address so if we can just sort out a rough idea if what it is we want then I can send it off to him and he should be able to help arrange something :)

    So yeah, all we need to do is come up with what we want and I can e-mail him so that hopefully we can get something arranged.

    Also, he did say that, for example, if there were 18 of us going, we would need to book for 20 people because they would need to fill out the 10 simulators in the session as best as possible. So in that case I guess 2 people would be able to do 2 race session for what I gathered. But it's early days.

    STR are definitely blowing Hispania's drivers away, and remember Colin Kolles (Hispania's team leader) was one of the people largely responsible for the rule being imposed. It has two small sponsors (Volkswagen and Advanti) that teams could be tempted to steal. In fact, Volkswagen could be turned into a large sponsor by the right sponsor department. With at least three known applicants other than Stefan trying for the vacancy in 2011, Stefan could only get in if the FIA felt like it, which is extremely unlikely.

    As a result, STR has no cards at all if it's cheating. Which, in combination with the total lack of interest in protesting it during an unusually quiet period of F1 political history, suggests to me that it did come up with its own IP and is therefore completely legitimate.

  • me21/05/2010 at 13:48

    2 things that spring to mind;

    1) the people who think HRT are dallaras fault and so dallara aren't very good, arent the people who buy Dallaras cars

    2) Dallara aren't going to loose any sales from this year.

    It's at a facility just near Gatwick Airport and we're probably looking to do it sometime between August and October, we think. It's still in the very early stages of being organised. :)

    I guess I'm only suggesting this because I've never really organised anything like this before and it might be easier if we both organised it together, so I thought that it might be a bit of a help for you if I gave you the guy's e-mail as well so if you need to get in touch with him about anything, you can. :P

    they could see the suspension failed, so denied the drain caused a puncture.

    am guessing they hadn't factored in the drain lifting up and doing the suspension in.

    Hehehe, thankfully you'll be happy to know with what we're planning to go with, it's only going to be £35 per session. We're looking at the possibility of block booking the simulators so we can do 2 full race sessions. So to be fair, £70 is a bargain! (depending on how many people are coming)

    Toyota's previously unseen 2010 Formula 1 car, the TF110 has run for the first time. Kazuki Nakajima gave TF110-01 a brief shakedown outside the teams base in Cologne, Germany.

    First three hours were fairly solid, but it's getting a little interrupted by 2 minute showers every so often - the speeds are definitely there, but not quite like Wednesday or Thursday, because the temperatures are slightly off

    Crikey. I may miss the first hour on both days, a little annoying but if they make the sessions that long its hard to avoid.

    It might not get really interesting until the second or third hour which is when the bumping really begins, after which it could be epic - especially for the 24th place, because no one wants to have to try again on bump day.

    Bump day itself may be awesome as for the first time in years, we could lose someone who's decent as opposed to half-an-amateur

    what can i say... i'm sentimental.. i loved my team...

    ...and you still will; it's just that it may not reciprocate that love any more - would you like some tea?

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2010 at 22:09

    someone else on the support forum says "I've had this problem occur more than once, and it seems to only happen to Videos I try to download from PSN when my connection sucks" which is story of my life.

    I shall ring Sony tomorrow and get my money back :( I don't think I have it in me to download 3.7gb again. MFC fail :(

    that's just weird. a file is a file, how can downloading slowly make any difference? {Comment #257}

    Maybe it's not if it's slow but if the speed is variable - perhaps bits are getting lost and it's confusing the attached copyright checker as a result?

  • me21/05/2010 at 22:09

    i'm probably in the smallest minority ever here, but did anyone watch coronation street tonight?

    Volkswagen aren't going anywhere, Red Bull and the VW/Audi group have tie-ins all over motorsport. {Comment #263}

    If STR get bad press from being thrown out, VW (which doesn't appear to be tied to Red Bull F1, only the STR team) could swap to another team. That's what would interest those teams desperately trying to get sponsors or improve their revenues.

    hi alison

  • Alianora La Canta21/05/2010 at 22:13

    I think no matter how the regs are written, STR are always going to make a sister car to a Red Bull, whether that's legal or not is another matter but you can't really call those two teams separate of each other. {Comment #264}

    I really, really do not see your argument. STR wouldn't be stupid enough to "make a Red Bull". But clearly there's no point discussing it :(

    I had an Arrows screensaver for a while last year, which makes no sense as I've never supported that team (unless you count the time in 1997 when I was supporting Hill who happened to be driving for the team). Now I have one of Force India's multitude of screensavers, which at least makes sense.

    It certainly was. Seeing Damon that far ahead of everything else in a machine that was usually slow and falling apart made me grin a lot. It's not often a 50p washer is the difference between victory and defeat, and it was the closest Arrows would ever get.

    Annoyingly, I missed the British GP (where Damon scored his other Arrows point) due to being at a swimming gala.

    Not wasted at all - it was good to reminisce (assuming you were referring to Hungary 1997 because that's all anyone seems to remember about Arrows in 1997) :) In fact, the screensaver would probably have been better if it had been a "Best of Arrows" rather than "Images From The Final Year Of A Mediocre But Long-Lived Team".

    With Arrows? Something to do with Pedro Diniz? Whatever happened to him? {Comment #604}

    According to my Formula 1 Yearbook 1997-1998:

    Well it seems one cannot judge the talent of Pedro Diniz by the thickness of his wallet alone. In 1997, the Brazillian was sometimes quicker than his team-mate [Damon Hill]... ...he managed to pick up two points at the Nurburgring, which given the performance of his chassis, was quite an achievement. However, he was still capable of getting it wrong. Although his tally of spins does not put him on a par with Katayama or Ralf Schumacher".

    Come to think of it, was he was involved with the downfall of Parmalat?

    didn't his family own a supermarket chain? or was it parmalat? {Comment #616}

    A nice big supermarket chain. Which is indeed doing a lot better than Parmalat (which went into administration in 2002).

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 23:00

    Went ploughing a gravel trap with his roll hoop and ripped it off. Then he had a fire in his car that gave rise to one of the great F1 headlines. Diniz in the oven

  • Pat W21/05/2010 at 23:01

    Diniz has since taken complete control of his father's company and is very very very rich

    Tis a good example of just how great the festival is actually.. it's so enjoyable that even it's still great fun even if you aren't particularly enjoying the racing that year. It's the same kinda thing as Em actually. She loved our day at goodwood and only really watches f1 cause of Heikki..
