It's Thursday once again. So far this year, I haven't found Thursdays too bad, but I can only imagine the bad vibe is waiting round the corner for me. To battle it, it turns out it is National Hug Day today. I'm not that good at hugging, but make sure you celebrate the day for me, and give someone a big ol' hug. Anyway, on to F1 things:
- There's been a nice comment over on F1 Minute, from Mike of Sweet F1. I am already married, of course, and I am also slightly concerned about the word "us" used in the proposal, however, I can certainly manage a link or two. It looks like the site is on hiatus at the moment during the off season, but it will be racing time once again before you know it.
- Whilst we're linking to things, the Forza Toro Rosso blog has an interesting post about the team's decision to sack Bourdais, pondering whether they were right to do such a thing. The post is generating quite the discussion, and I just know we all have opinions on the subject as well. Add yours!
- Finally, RG wrote a pretty awesome guest post for us yesterday, taking a closer look at how easy it is to make up news on the internet. Although an ultimately harmless experiment, RG's made up headline actually got passed on as fact, so it's definitely worth reading how that turned out.
That's all for now, let us know what you're up to today, and how the weather is where you are, and I will see you in the comments.
it's biff!
or not, either way.
Today is a very important day... The 50 day count down can begin!!! wohoo!!! :)
*runs away so christine can't be mad at her*
oh no!

amazon fighting hard to keep the Kindle attractive:
"...the Kindle price must be the same or below the price offered at other e-book stores."
smart move, although the sweetener is going to kill their profits. yeah for competition in the marketplace.
Read that earlier, loved it!
i haven't done anything wrong?
leg.end.
They are running scared
Whether folk buy it there or not, I do think Amazon suffer by not having a physical store with playable demoes for people to confirm the Kindle's buyability
i think the fact i still haven't touched one, speaks (virtual) volumes. i want one too.
I'd like an e-reader too but I also want a laptop more. Now if only...
something tells me it'll be glossy though. i'm less fanatical about glossy. the matte of the kindle still holds appeal. if only they cared about the uk.
Surely, they'll have to get aggressive if they have a serious contender this spring
My iMac is glossy and it's no biggie. A portable on the other hand, I have no experience of in the daylight
Apple restored my faith this evening after my appointment at the Genius Bar. In under 10mins they looked at my phone, apologised [more than once] and issued me with a new one and activated it
It was also already charged
that is rather brilliant.
I heart Apple stores
And only cos I knew all my apps, contacts and data were automatically backed-up on my Mac did I not sweat when it froze on friday
we told you the story about the woman and the two nanos? she returned to the apple store while we were buying stuff there and said:
woman: "i couldn't decide which colour suited me, so the sales guy let me take two yesterday, and return one. can i have my money back on the blue one"
apple guy: "sure thing"

Did we know Rossi tested today? I did not.

was news to me but tis in the calendar. massa on friday (not sure that's been added).
How comes he's testing? Is it a Ferrari #we'renottestingbutwereallyare test?
no idea. you saw the alonso pics too, right? assuming it's like that.
nope?

Have never known such customer relations
When I was hunting for a store with available phones last summer, they only had 32 gig White or 16GB Back
Rather than convincing me and in process, losing a sale, the assistant said "Get the best phone you can and will be happy with, if you're to have it for 2 years"
Hats off
oh yeah, just caught that earlier. what was Nando doing? Testing confuses me now, i thought it was banned until 1st Jan, but apparently it changed to 1st Feb.
mclaren have found space to fit members in at testing. Damn spain being so far away!
iTunes revenue & customer loyalty will more than make up for the small loss on selling it as a refurb
UK public service announcement - you may like to know you can get a box of 10 Guinni for £9 in Morrisons
me too. i have no answers, just similar questions!
Noted with thanks
It annoys me that they often try and cover it with "its a 2008 not-owned-by-ferrari-ferrari", cant they just say "yes, we're testing Felipe today in the 2008 car, he needs track time" etc
Am listening to a very good iTunes U of a woman from Google talking about Creativity. Very interesting. However, she has the most irritating laugh.
no linkage?
oh yeah. gimme a sec, need to work out how :D

i can find it from the title now though.

You see, this is how I miss all this clever stuff
Too busy reading the blog of a Sleep Talkin' Man
Kinda think I prefer it this way though
ok, found it. yes, it's odd that nobody else picked it up, but then Santander and AS are Spanish so they can have some access to the pictures... According to that then the left picture is also real, an F60 in 2010 colors for some ad shots.

good man.
ooh and planningsome video tours of teams, manurfacturers and if i can wangle it, follow a team as they prep and then race and then pack down again.
you've probably seen it, but also related:

i think in one of the audio shows we talked about, because they were associated with honda and the breadbin too.
Morning, folks.
morning!
Hey Journeyer
yeah i remember that, but will watch again
morning
How goes the world this morning? :)
I think we're doing just fine
Yourself & yours?
Meh, for the most part. Could be worse, but could be a lot better.
Sadly, this is a rule of life
Work, economic times, etc?
Indeed so. Work's been a bit of a drag as of late. Anyhow, can't wait for the weekend...
50-day countdown starts today, I see?
Yup. The latter I've come to accept, the former is a bit more difficult to come to terms with...
grr
:D Hehe. Aren't you excited to have racing again?
we have much to do.
Awww. Yeah, you're right.
Yay!
This is a constant
true story. i keep promising myself a commenting amnesty to get stuff done.
I have booked my accommodation for Melbourne. WooHoo!!
Now if only my tickets would turn up :-(
Cool, make sure you touch base with Amy and [possibly] Jeremy
hmm. i should be asleep, but apparently im not. boo
I'm hoping there will be a meet up somewhere, sometime. Maybe if Joe gets his thing organized.
You need to decide to take a day off before opening up the doohickey
[and stick to it]
That would be most excellent
You should remind him in early to mid-Feb
I don't like to be pushy.
I'm excited. 35 years of following F1 and this is my first GP. Unbelievable.
I think a 'are you still considering F1 meet-ups this year' email/comment would be an encouragement
Failing that, add it to the 'Ask Joe' Wiki
Oh great idea. Will do.
My first this year too
Welcome to our world Jon
good plan.
Im having sleep issues, so gonna shower then try to sleep. Adios everyonee
See ya Jon
[shower wakes me up]
Night Jon.
night jon.
it's dinner time for me. see you!
See ya Guille
fourth time I see Nothing Hill... I really like that movie :-)
i was looking at organising something in melbourne for spc folk but everyone seemed far too indecisive as to whether they were coming or not. I cannot take such stress when its only 10 weeks away ;) otherwise i am sure we can meet up at the circuit. Paul are you doing GA or grandstands?
I am going. All set except race ticket. Waiting if option A works out before I take up the option B
Amy, I'm doing a 4-grandstand thing, on your advice :-) Ending up with the Jones stand (Turn 1) on Sunday.
I'm sire we will work something informal out closer to the time. I'm there from Wed to Sunday. Would be good if Joe does his thing though.
hooray! 4 corners are excellent, i wish every track had them
#SecretNASCARFan
i just hope a hotel in south yarra is close enough
Morning
Talk about a Freudian slip - gotta love that mis-spelling! :D
Morning everyone :)
south yarra is closer than my place! Definitely walkable.

WHY???
The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship is taking place this weekend
So why not tee off from the Grand Prix circuit? Makes perfect sense to me :P
I'd say morning, but in reality it's just a misnomer for how tired you and I really are. Got Tom Holt book to keep me sane though!
also on phone again. Laters!
Golf and tennis always seem to want pr stunts.
Fed was playing on the track a few weeks ago....
I guess it keeps the place sustainable and it means Etihad can publicize the circuit even when there's no racing around.
Although come to think of it, the Indy Motor Speedway has a golf course in the infield...
Yeah but this guy was teeing off from the start/finish line!
Well it's one way to make the circuit interesting
Morning all
Some bumps and potholes might do it good ;)
Doh.
Im already debating which option to go for next month
http://www.yasmarinacircuit.com/ticketpurchase/v8ticketpricing.aspx
What circuit are they using for that?
Taxi racing sounds awesome, but has been crap for 20 years since they got rid of all the 'furrin' cars :(
Fair point. :D
Sounds like they need Robert De Niro. The interviews after the race would be excellent.
"Are you talkin' to me?"
The tickets are absolute bargains, I must say.
I wonder if the V8s will manage what the F1 cars couldn't - have a crash at the pit exit tunnel. :D
Looking at Nick's Tweets.
If we call Pedalo 'Hedgehog', should we call him Sonic, then? :D
If we do, does that mean...?
gosh, it might be hard to watch two matches at once but both my boys are doing so welllll
:D
Might have to get some which allow access to a bar though...
YES! :D So from now on, Pedalo is Sonic and Kamui is Tails. :D
Any suggestions for Dr. Robotnik? ;)
Possibly the only reason why Flav should have stayed
:P
I watched Baghdatis-Ferrer earlier. It was monu-MENTAL! Kinda like Cilic's match last night.
Tomic came out this morning and was all over the media complaining that they made a boy of his age play until 2am and how he would have won if he'd played during the day. It really make him look like a sore loser.
Aww, diddums :) what a sore loser. Ferrer should have come out exclaiming his desire to play until 3, 4, maybe 5am in victory!
And with that I head off to hand in this silly assignment, yay!
exactly. Mr Roger has played many late nights and he wins all the time. And he looks super good in HD. And he's really sweaty. Light blue was not a good choice. Then again, how was he to know, it's a #tennisfact that Roger never sweats, ever.
Morning all.
Like Michael Schumacher? :P
Hey, Christine. :)
Morning :)
they must have come from the same athlete factory :D
Even the commentators were confused in round one 'is that just the pattern on his shirt? it can't be sweat?'
That's not the tournament's problem, is it?
Then again, if his match ended at 2 AM, how was he up so early?
:D Gasp! He's human AFTER ALL! :D
Hi Christine.
Urm... Bye Christine. *rushes off to the bus*
apparently he asked to be put on during the day but the scheduling is quite based around what TV wants. There has been lots of complaints in the media that they have been putting low-ranking Australian players on Rod Laver in place of people like Federer, Serena, Novak and Delpo and the people who are buying the dearest tickets are missing out on quality tennis just because someone thinks they should be supporting people who happened to be born here.
I guess they want the good players to play at around the time Europe goes to breakfast rather than when they're already at work? Not sure exactly what they want to happen, though.
they always put the main feature match on at 7.00 so its prime time for Australia. Thats why every other night the men went first but last night the Henin match was first because she is a bigger name. They probably didn't expect a ladys match to go almost 3 1/2 hours though!
and in bloggy + oh god why news, Andy Murrays mother is blogging from the Australian Open. She met Fed's twins. I think I hate her.
Dementieva got unlucky in the draw there, I must say. Henin might be unseeded but I easily see her on the same level as Dementieva. If I'm not mistaken, Dementieva also collapsed at Flushing Meadows last year, right?
Tickets are for main and west grandstands only, they are using the 'corkscrew' sequence for the first time, i cant tell if this means they are just using the north circuit or if its just an extra loop on the normal layout.
Autosport suggests its a shorter loop http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80223
Saw her comment on Sharapova too. What has happened to her? Looks like she never really fully recovered from her injury...
Paywall.
Here is another link - is this the circuit? http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2009/11/18/v8s-to-kick-off-2010-series-under-lights/
yeah shes definitely past her best, I think the shoulder probably won't be 100% again.
FTA:
Sunset in Abu Dhabi in mid-February is just after 6pm, which means that the races are likely to be broadcasted live into Australian homes in the early hours of the morning (approximately 1am).
1 AM? Why would they want to run an Australian series at 1 AM AUS time? Bonkers.
Aha, well found, i thought they might cut out the marina, that looks like quite a good decsion, that straight could be madness in those cars!
A shame - her fall is looking as quick as her rise...
Perhaps she should just focus on modelling instead if she continues to struggle.
Thats what i thought...
I loved her dress for the AO even if most seemed to hate it. I am sad I won't get to see it again. Perhaps I should buy one :D
Both Rog + Nando have two sets now. They're playing at the same pace, I like it!
Why madness? Would've been very exciting, I think.
A twilight race helps F1 with its European audience. If V8 really wanted a twilight race that bad, they should've worked with Singapore instead - it makes no sense at Abu Dhabi.
2010 Ferrari overalls: http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/gallery.php?catID=4699
TotalMercedesGP mentioned that they're now using printed rather than stitched logos as they weigh less. This isn't news, though - this practice started last year. Unfortunately, they've also transferred this practice onto their merch (it probably costs less as well). I don't like the printed look as much, though.
the stripes on their legs makes them look even shorter than usual :D
They do have the diff settings to run a long straight at Bathurst though...
oh prince william is there!
Not such a fan of it... Heheh.
http://twitter.com/jakehumphreyf1
Looks like Jake played "20 Questions". He got 500. :D
Oh the prince is at the tennis. He gets all the good seats
I would totally be a prince if it got me front row to Roger. :D
Do they have a mercy rule in tennis?
nah, but usually the inevitable loser guy just stops trying to get it over with quicker.
:-) seems what is happening now
I smell bagels
What's a mercy rule?
when its really really obvious who is going to win so everyone quits and goes home.
What? But it's the taking part that counts!
indeed, I've never seen it happen in any of the sports I watch. I have seen many losing tennis players retire from a match, but thats a good way to be booed and have people not respect you.
not when you are getting spanked by Roger
Just for argument's sake, what about the F1 driver who pulls into the pits because they're too far back and can't be bothered to finish?
What about them?
Isn't that like the mercy rule?
Like BAR in AUS 2005, when they retired on purpose to get new engines?
Is it? I dunno. It's stupid. You never know when a big DC style crash could happen.
Or you could do what Webber did in Japan and test new parts. I do think it's worth carrying on if you can myself...
I think the mercy ruloe concept came from baseball, whne teams were way in front
That was really dumb wasn't it?
Goodness me, this is not up to the standard of last nights entertainment
I guess it depends on the style of game. If it is mathematically impossible for you to win, then there could be no point in playing on. But in tennis, it ain't over till it's over. That's what they keep saying, anyways :)
but but but AWW. Rog <3
yep, just ask Alicia Molik !
hehe
Singapore is a street race, they would probably have had to do it then the F1 was on to justify the cost/Disruption. that would totaly overhshaddow the race.
I think they want to get as many people to the track as possible, that means doing it late.
i doubt many people will go, but there will be more if it is is in the evening
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,1,26610768-12428,00.html
Wow!
Yes wow. I think she started planning her victory speach a bit too early
Especially when you remember that BOTH brand-new race engines blew up anyway on Lap 3 in Malaysia...
she did well to recognise he could be such a classy, classy man because he was certainly a bit gangly in the past
This is worse than your Heikki stalking!
I wonder if this means they're willing to take the ratings hit in order to have at least a good ticket revenue?
Yep because their new engines failed in the next race, if I remember rightly.
Has Jim Courier been listening to Amy?!
Morning all. who knew writing about eBay would actually be intresting :D
:D :D
He has! now talking about the twins!
I love that he thought he wouldn't get emotional at the wedding because they've been together for so long. The fact he is so emotional is why I like him :D
Hehe. Prince red-face
What are you writing about them?
Who their consumers are, the impact of the current economic climate and their approach to marketing.
I'm enjoying writing this more than I thought I would. :)
I just got the following message from our accounts department, "Woop! Woop!"
I must be doing something right!
Wow! I'm impressed!
Are you saying... they went a bit wrong buying Skype?
Hehe. I'm going to try fit that in somewhere. ;)
I had a horrible dream last night.
Dreamt that I was back in one of my GCSE Maths lessons, taught by none other than Michael Schumacher. He was awful and us pupils complained that he wasn't up to the task in hand.
I then woke up in a cold sweat.
Premonition of things to come?
It can only be because he's been messing about with numbers.
In Cricket they always play all of the 5 tests of a series even if after the first 3 tests have ended 3-0 and there is no way of the losing side winning. That could mean 10 more days of playing!
Oh crikey, it must have been!
Crumbs, I've never ever had a dream about anything motorsport related before! :-(
Did he make sure he had better textbooks and whiteboard equipment than the other teachers?
Not a great one to start with!
I thought cricket always ended up in a draw.
I'm too scared to go back to sleep ever again now. Bit like Nightmare on Elm Street.
Did he only use odd numbers? He likes those, apparently
He was rubbish, and kept getting his pupils' names wrong. Though he did call me 'Dank Ross' which I thought was amusing.
Well... I had built up a bit of a backlogue with my invoice signing arm. And yesterday when Ellen had left she had just happened to mention that perhaps it might be handy if I did get around to signing them off. I said I would do it last night, and she looked skeptical at me considering there were 12 to do and it was 6 o'clock.
That was the reaction when she got to her desk this morning!
Don't hate me for being 12 behind.
Only when England play it seems ;)
You're a model colleague ;)
It does a lot of the time. But it can also be a tie which is different than a draw!
(Draw is nobody won, tie is you got the same score, still nobody won though)
Oh yea, course, silly me!
cricket - two ways of not winning !!
:)
As long as you brightened up her morning, that's good.
It's incredible! It doesn't happen that often though.
There have only ever been a very small number of tied tests. Draws happen all the time though.
two, if memory serves, not that I'm a fan
Indeed. Now of course she has to pay them all. But at least there was progress!
Wonder how long it will be before the person running tororossoblog.com will receive a similar heavy-handed letter from the legal bigwigs at Red Bull?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tied_test
ooh, they must've learnt something though right?
Do you think it is a certainty?
Remind me again what you had to change on yours to be acceptable?
Ah Mr C... I guess you have seen this: http://www.youtube.com/html5
There are few words in the english language that fully sum up the satisfaction of handing in a finished assignment :)
Doubt they have.
The chap I knew at RBR was somewhat embarrassed by their approach to the red bullog last year.
yay?
More like yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyaahoooooaoahoooooooo
or that one ;-)
About time to start thinking of a suitable lunchtime way of celebrating?
Greggs on me?
I got a ticking off for using the words REDBULLog in my URL and for not making in clear that it was unofficial. Plus I was advised to keep references to logos etc. to a minimum. Amongst other things.
do i get a prize if i say "i saw it last summer"? or is that showing off?
we already have a similar page in the playground: http://sidepodcast.com/playground/html5multimedia.php
Then maybe you should contact the guy and give him a heads up so he knows what to expect...
although youtube's player is nicer.
I thought they had only just launched it. I must have misread.
Also I am guessing you saw this as well but it is very nicely written: http://diveintohtml5.org/
I hate this .php business, so, does anyone know of an EASY way (perhaps by use of a plugin) that allows you to create a page on Wordpress which contains specific posts from a category?
Have you seen how I do it on my blog?
it's been in beta since whenever the chrome browser came out, unless they've released something new? the player is okay, but it doesn't support the cool "closed captions" thing we tried out the other day and it doesn't support embedding in other sites.
dailymotion have a similar trial running: http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo
No I haven't. Show me!
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/category/fantasy-racers/
When you write your posts, give them a category ;)
Don't mean that unfortunately.
Using your blog for example, you have pages for 'About' 'FAQ' etc. How would you make a page entitled 'Fantasy Racers' which would link to category?
Oooh I dunno actually - I did my posts manually I am afraid :(
self hosted wordpress, or on wordpress.com?
Self hosted because I'm cool like that.
Bless you.
good man. have you tried this:
<?php $recent = new WP_Query("cat=3&showposts=7"); while($recent->have_posts()) : $recent->the_post();?>
// stuff
<?php endwhile; ?>
No, but I'll give it a bash.
where cat = the category id and showposts = how many entries you want listed.
in the // stuff bit you put the usual gubbins like:
<?php the_title(); ?>
If only stuff was a tag that worked.
would help if i could type:
hehehehe!
So would I just need to copy and paste that code into a .php file, upload it to my server and then use it as a template for a page? (Obviously amending the category ID and post numbers)
ASI visitor numbers on the up (like I said perhaps already): http://www.haymarket.com/newsarticle.aspx?news=815
correct. at least it should work.
not near a wordpress installation to try it right now, but if it doesn't i'll write you something tonight. i think the category id can be multiple categories too.
the button effect.
so i've read the announcement, and i still don't get what they've enabled today that wasn't there yesterday? unless it was a closed beta before, it all looks the same to me?
still, yay for html5. is flash dead yet?
If you could I would be eternally grateful. Just tried and receive: "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '&' in /home/motorsmu/public_html/wp-content/themes/lightword/review.php on line 8"
Just trying to show posts from the category 'review' I have on my blog, which comes under category ID 10.
have we covered this tweet?
USF1 go for coil sprung suspension and reportedly a transverse gearbox. Innovation or pre 90s technology? But certainly unique
i really have no idea what that means though!
http://twitter.com/ScarbsF1/status/8021448070
i'll mail you some code in the meantime. spc comments may have mangled something my lazy eyes can spot.
Transverse gearbox makes sense with the increased fuel tank size but coil springs?
Think back to Giggles's explanation of pulleods and pushrods and forget eveything he said. The reason either is used is so that the suspension springs and dampers can be put inside the nose or rear of the car and out of the airflow. Initially normal coil springs were used but much smaller than normal owing to the leverage effect of the push/pullrod. Everyone now has replaced the coil springs with torsion bars. The chassis and the wheel are connected to either end of a metal bar that twists at a controlled rate to act like a spring.
Transverse gearbox just means they have a gearbox that effectively has been rotated 90º so that it is wider than it is long.
Oi you're trying to write Bob Bell out of his rightful place in history! I won't stand for it!
Not at all. Doesn't matter what the spring is you still need his invention
Phew!
:)
i like this new found openness in f1. williams are under the 3s mark with their pitstops too.
I wonder if there was a lewis effect on the numbers last year...
Normally, when someone tries an engineering gamble like this, it ends up being a rather spectacular failure...
He wasn't there last year.
Would be amazing if 2 cars fighting for position pitted at the same time...
Or if we had a safety car, actually!
He wasn't? Yet Button's went this year?
Hey, look!
The LG Global Fan Survey 2010 in association with FOTA and F1 Racing.
That was a mouthful.
Survey goes live 2nd of February.
http://www.lgf1racingfansurvey.com/
Hey look! Another way for your views to not be heard!
Yup
Is this the thing they sold the findings and statistics for £2,000 last year?
Well it won't accept my email address anyway.
Well, it's the first time FOTA will be directly involved in the survey. Or am I being too optimistic?
Seeing as it's in assoc. with F1R, I would think so. This was probably the same survey ING sponsored last year.
FOTA know what we want. They promised it all when they were going to breakaway.
So why help to create another survey?
I don't know, marketing? Make the fans think they care? To get a piece of the thousands F1 Racing will sell it for?
What kind of error?
KER CHING !!!
I get this.
Oooh, fail :)
Fail@fail.com!
Whether folk buy it there or not, I do think Amazon suffer by not having a physical store with playable demoes for people to confirm the Kindle's buyability {Comment #12}
I saw a Kindle in operation at my local Waterstone's at the weekend. I think the branch in question would get more sales if they sent it back and got a properly-functional one because the demonstration model had seriously blurry low-contrast text. I'm fairly sure Kindles aren't supposed to be like that...
Apple restored my faith this evening after my appointment at the Genius Bar. In under 10mins they looked at my phone, apologised [more than once] and issued me with a new one and activated it
It was also already charged {Comment #17}
Now that's customer service!
I have now realised that there were rogue +'s in my username and removed them.
we told you the story about the woman and the two nanos? she returned to the apple store while we were buying stuff there and said:
woman: "i couldn't decide which colour suited me, so the sales guy let me take two yesterday, and return one. can i have my money back on the blue one"
apple guy: "sure thing"
we.were.speechless. {Comment #21}
:O I've never heard of anything like that happen in a retail shop before. *applauds*
oh yeah, just caught that earlier. what was Nando doing? Testing confuses me now, i thought it was banned until 1st Jan, but apparently it changed to 1st Feb. {Comment #29}
According to the regulations, testing is banned until 1st Jan. The teams have agreed not to test their current cars until the first general test of 1st Feb, but it isn't binding on third parties such as F1 Clienti. Handily, F1 Clienti's miles are not considered when totalling Ferrari's official mileage for the year either.
If Alonso was testing in December, it must have been a promotional run (which is excluded from the test regulations anyway).
How goes the world this morning? :) {Comment #93}
Fine, thank you. I'm having a bit of a lazy day today...
I had to wonder on the way home what to do for lunch, then I remembered there's a very handy guide on the wiki... ;)
What? But it's the taking part that counts!
indeed, I've never seen it happen in any of the sports I watch. I have seen many losing tennis players retire from a match, but thats a good way to be booed and have people not respect you. {Comment #200}
When I was doing the 1500m in the Year 10 school sports day, I was offered the option of not doing the last lap because all but one of the other competitors had lapped me (some of them twice) in the race. Given the time, I think it was because it was the last event of the day and the teachers wanted to take the year back to school to get lunch. I refused for two reasons; I was stubborn enough to want to finish the event and competitive enough to notice that the one runner who hadn't lapped me was within striking distance (she'd also been offered a "mercy rule" exit and also refused, for similar reasons). For the record, I avoided the wooden spoon by about three metres...
when its really really obvious who is going to win so everyone quits and goes home.
What? But it's the taking part that counts!
Just for argument's sake, what about the F1 driver who pulls into the pits because they're too far back and can't be bothered to finish? {Comment #202}
I tend not to look too kindly on such antics - "can't be bothered to finish" is not a valid excuse to retire from a race in my book. Which was a bit awkward because at least one version of the reason my original favourite driver (Damon Hill) retired from his last race (Japan 1999) was that. The official reason was "handling problems" but there were, shall we say, some doubts and it was rather unfortunate...
Like BAR in AUS 2005, when they retired on purpose to get new engines?
That was really dumb wasn't it? {Comment #205}
Yes - throwing away 4 points to get 2 is, generally speaking, not the smart move...
Alia, you're referring to the 2006 decision. That wasn't as bad as the 2005 one, I think... The 2006 decision would've worked out had the pitcrew not messed up.
Such cynicism!
oops, looks like i broke the username field last night.
will fix this evening. sorry.
I think that comes from all of us doing the survey last time and when the results we had been waiting for came out they wanted to charge us £1500. It was bad enough doing Max's survey only for him to announce his plans for F1 before the results had been compiled but to fill in a survey and then being told that we would never see the results unless we paid £1500 was insulting. That shoould have been declared in big letters up front.
I like these set of notes near the printer (not at our office)
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2536/4009290221_087fb527ca_o.jpg
So true. especially the robot one.
agreed. this is what christine originally said about the survey, which i think is a fair analysis. but the key line is:
"Just five sets of results were printed in the magazine, and I can't seem to find anymore anywhere else. I know I answered more than five questions, but perhaps the other results will be forthcoming soon."
a certain individual commented the following:
"Let's hope so – the bit in the mag was just the edited highlights."
i don't think those results ever came did they?
In this month's F1 Racing, one of David Coulthard's bit of advice at the end is to keep it brief with answering questions about f1.
Couldn't he have looked to the left within the past year and given this advice to someone else?! ;)
p.s. i (heart) archives :)
Well, indeed...
In the past there was much more coverage of the results of these surveys, so I assumed that things would carry on the same - and they didn't.
Still waiting.
Needless to say I won't be filling in this year's survey. No point wasting my time
same here. i think though the cynicism is born out of that. we all spent a fair amount of time filling in forms in the hope we'd make a difference, yet got very little in return.
fool us once... etc.
it depends.
now we know, we can approach it in a different way.
there's a chance to win £4000, so we could all just randomly click buttons and still stand a chance. it would skew the results, but if we never expect to see the results anyhow, it makes no odds.
That's a lotta money...
We could all put exactly the same answers and see if we can really rig it. They would be shocked if Piquet turned up as the most popular driver and Button least favourite. Lets see them sell those results to anyone
and winning would make up for the disappointment of last year, right?
i say lets break the system, and aim to profit and gain from it instead. anyone else?
Viva la resistance!
i'm up for that.
I don't think I was that disappointed last year.
Quite. I can say in all honesty that I know nothing about this year's survey apart from the announcement in the magazine, which I was flicking through en route to page 62-ish...
If you feel that it hasn't been worth your time in the past then you're utterly within your rights to decline to participate again. Make your feelings known and they will be picked up, what with Google Alerts, etc.
We'd need to get a LOT of people for this to work, though.
Good morning!
absolutely. was really just explaining where the cynicism was rooted.
Want to try again?
either way, we'd still be in with a shot of winning.
We have a lot of twitter followers and website owners around here
umm, nope :D

I heart this picture
Did we know about Anthony Davidson's ambitions for a drive in DTM this year? He tested with Audi earlier this week.
And as the DTM schedule doesn't clash with F1, surely that means he'll continue his commentary duties on Five Live?
PLEASE LET IT BE SO!
Why the heck are FIAT selling rebadged Suzuki's?
Afternoon all.
Hullo Tom
News to me
The DTM schedule has been deliberately set like that so we can expect it to continue like that. Apparently DC is talking to Mercedes about a drive.
So hi. I found this interesting. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8470797.stm
If only every country had its own Tim Berners-Lee. Alas...
I like it - a LOT! Is this MFC?
no idea :-)
should get a lot of useful services out of it though
I think it probably is. Previously this information was either not accessible or available in a book, now it is digital?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sidepodcastis-mp3
:D
very quiet for some reason
I would think so, yes. This is the kind of stuff I'd dream of happening here...
plus a blog post about it
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/rorycellanjones/
For those that know about it - there's a ModNation Racers beta demo available later today for the first 100,000 people on the PS3 in Europe that download it. It's basically a racing game version of Little Big Planet and has lots of hype and positivity behind it so I'm definitely keeping my eye out for when it pops up!
Are you sitting there hitting refresh? (or the PS3 equivalent?)
No!! Ludicrous. What an absurd idea! Gosh. Golly.
#okfineIambutPS3storeneedsadoohickey
YAY! I got the beta. Good ol' refreshing.
We know what you'll be doing for the rest of the afternoon then.
And to think, I have no assignments to worry about. It's just such a shame.
What F1 track to start making first...
Has this demo been released purely to ensure content is available when the game is fully released?
Is your Tilke track still in the drop?
I'm nor sure why. It's a closed beta so they obviously want to test it with a certain amount of people.
Sorry, misunderstood what you meant!
doh! :)
Vanilla Ice and Jedward?

Who? What the heck is going on with that hair?
Photos that talentless should be banned.
You've not missed much

OH MY! If this isn't a Thursday/Friday thought opportunity then i dont know what is!
What should the bridge be called?
How about what would you name after an F1 driver instead?
Button Bridge I assume. I'm not sure what else it could be called :)
It's a great bridge for the first half of the crossing but then you really struggle to get to the other side
You have a point, as does lukeh.
"The bridge is going to be built anyway so we decided it would be a good idea to name it after him."
wow, he must be chuffed to bits.
Ooooooh, noted.
It's a footbridge, so... The Monaco Jog
I think i would name a certain Belgian, first name Bertrand, after a certain French bread type
Clifton could be renamed Jenson's Jump
Bored now. Can I go home?
Will try to keep suggestions back for tomorrow then :-)
You're gonna need to save that creative genius until tomorrow ;)
Yes.
Thanks. Blogging is more fun than processing invoices.
plus I don't have to keep alt-tabbing out to hide the fact i'm commenting and not working
the inventor of that shortcut, and the inventor of the hide msn short-cut, ctrl space if i remember correctly (that got me out of some scrapes when i was 14) should both be given nobel peace prizes
My friend is telling me about her husband who can power-nap his way through a long drive, ten minutes at a service station here, ten minutes there.
It takes me longer than ten minutes to get to sleep!
I do love that Jenson story, especially the quote. I have one of those important meetings again ;) Starbucks calls!
I am jealous!
I'd be too scared of falling asleep again at the wheel.. Coffee or Red Bull all the way!
how long is a 'long drive'?
so not as cool as roger federer arena. #nothere
This particular story was about a ten hour drive through the night, I think. Either way, it's quite a skill to have!
They say napping for twenty minutes is good for you, but it always makes me grumpy.
I just can't do it. I either don't fall asleep at all or I fall asleep for four hours and then can't sleep later that night. I wish I could nap :(
It depends how you wake up. Since I got one of those alarm clocks that slowly lights up in the mornings, I have been in a much better mood.
To my wife's eternal credit she has been woken up at 5am for the last two years and never complained about it!
When I nap, I usually do it as an afternoon siesta - usually 1-2 hours long. :) Does wonders for my energy the rest of the day.
that exists?!
yep, Basel renamed their stadium last year. Which is hilarious because it's not like hes retired and he always plays their tournament each year. Imagine meeting Roger Federer in the final at Roger Federer Arena. I don't think you'd be the favourite to win.
Just want to say I agree 100% with Lukeh, finishing a assignment gives a great feeling :D
Well, to be honest, I don't think you'd be the favorite in any arena. ;)
perhaps if your name was Rafa and the arena was Roland Garros, but that'd be it :D
Up so late, Amy? ;)
I thought I'd get an early night because the matches finished early but I somehow have started a How I Met Your Mother marathon. And tomorrow I won't be home until late because I'm going straight from work to the city to watch Clijsters and Nadal on the big screen :D Need to sleep in this weekend! (but only til 11 because thats when the tennis starts)
Haha! HIMYM - the Friends of our generation. :)
I've never seen it! I must.
never! Friends is the Friends of our generation!
Fair way! I did ten hours with a few pitstops for coffee but that was during the day, night must be so much harder
Greetings all. I have some bits of F1 news from this week's Autosport magazine:
- Sauber are apparently set to confirm a sponsorship deal to run their cars in the colours of Nestle-owned coffee company Nespresso.
- Also regarding Sauber, Fisichella was an outside bet for the drive, but couldn't match the financial package that de la Rosa had. Also, it's thought that Ferrari wanted to keep him race fit as a subsidy of their engine supply to the team.
- Stefan GP are looking at Kazuki Nakajima as one of their drivers should they make the 2010 grid.
For some reason, I like HIMYM more. Friends is still hilarious though.
I had never seen it and then I saw it two weeks in a row and found it rather funny so decided I would start from the start. So I went to iTunes to try and be MFC but they wanted $55 for the first season so I went to a shop and bought the first three seasons on DVD for $60 instead.
I've read all of these items online at some point. Looks like Nestle is a go, then.
Yes. No one could argue that iTunes is cheap.
I can have a little doze after work. Did that yesterday after staying up too late working on the blog. Fine after, just dazed a bit :-)
I still need to get season 4 but that was $35 on DVD which I won't pay. But it's $71 in iTunes.
I've just been on the Nespresso website and their colours look to be brown, cream and black...
agree!
brown doesn't look fast, but it sure does look different. :D
Brown is ok. Maybe not so much on a car.
If they made turquoise work, they can make brown work. :)
incidentally, the mention of 'through the night' reminded me of DJ Luck and MC Neat.
but ooooh so convenient.
OOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!
A video of Rubens at Williams!! He looks so happy :D http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8472470.stm
Oops, it's Cosworth HQ rather than Williams. Still! Rubens!
2.75 times more convenient?
try renting a movie in this country at 3am via any other means.
Renting's a bit different though. The TV section is a pretty expensive way to consume shows.
I think that's a different point.
i'm not saying it isn't. i'm saying it's more convenient.
tv show example then. i can organise my life around an episode of lost, so that i'm sat exactly where sky want me to be sitting, exactly when they want me to be sitting there.
or i can buy the show and watch it when i choose, where i choose and on what screen i choose. as i said... ooooh so convenient.
christine said:
and she is right. i can't. however, damn convenient.
again, completely different point. we were talking about Amy's DVD being considerably cheaper than the series.
i'm not.
I hear ya. But I am also slightly converted by the Channel 4 model. I bought the first four series of Peep Show for extortionate amounts of money, and I watched the second two online for free by sitting through a couple of ads.
Having said that, it wouldn't be that much cheaper for us, as we'd have to invest in a TV and DVD player as well :)
but i can do that too.
i can watch an itunes tv show on 3 screens. i can at best watch a dvd on 2 screens, unless i rip the thing (illegally). dvd's also take up space and get scratched.
again cheaper. but i couldn't watch a dvd located at my house, on a laptop in the car unless i remembered to pack it first. i'm all about the convenience.
but you needed a connection for that.
Too true. I am rarely without one though. I get withdrawal symptoms.
some f1 news: New Williams 'a clean-sheet design'
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81003
seems everyone is going aggressive this year.
and i'm an itunes addict.
true :-)
Remember a while back you asked me how I'd managed to spend a certain amount of money in such a short space of time? ;)
They're gonan give Rubens a super new car
hehe. we may need therapy.
Lotus exceeding Trulli's expectations
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81007
This makes me think he had no idea what the team had when he signed for them.
swiiiiing high.
Hehehe! "It's all very modern!"
Yes, grandpa Trulli :)
and then low ;)
doh!
makes you wonder just what Toyota had.
I was just trying to find something in my bank account (I wanted to find how much I had paid for something exactly... I noticed 95 pounds worth of iTunes purchases since Monday! I'm glad Katherine is starting to feel better not only for her sake but for my iTunes bill as well.
Having never tried to do that I can't really relate :-)
Last time they did this they had a Walrus-shaped nose
Hehe this is true. might work with the current regs though ;)
In this months F1R Patrick Head said they wouldn't be doing anything like that again
Thank god
i can't put a figure on it, but it's much more than 2.75 times more convenient.
don't give christine ideas?
"will work for itunes vouchers"
My standard answer is 5 for these things. Whenever anyone asks something that sounds like a numerical answer I go for 5 :)
Firefox 3.6 will be released today. wooo! :D (sorry i'm catching up with my feeds ;))
heheh. to me, it's the difference between watching a tv programme and not watching it. so, more than 5, right?
Well as Christine said, in my case I'd have to invest in a laptop/netbook or a super-duper mobiley thing.. so less so for me (right now at least)
*mr. c. is smug that he's already using it*
#confidential
The Apple TV is in my account :)
Living in Canada (where we get minimal F1 coverage) I desperately wish that the BBC version of F1 coverage was available on itunes...
thankfully, our apple tv is at christine's mother-in-laws. and she has no idea what it does.
You have to stop doing that. Ahead of the game on HTML5, smug about Firefox. Is there anything you don't know about?
good lord, that would make my life.
HAH! *uses 3.7*
my day job changed recently, so i've had to get on top of all this stuff.
sidepodcast.com has been using html since the summer, so it's not that new. i really should keep people up-to-date though.
...have i mention smooth scrolling?
the one they canned?
html5 since summer. it's been using html since day one. doh!
They did? oh :(
ever wondered how many pages it would cover if your printed twitter? no? me neither but Mashable did and have a pretty graphic to go with it ;) http://mashable.com/2010/01/19/if-you-printed-twitter/
well. not really. that was the headline, they're just changed the release process. you're still ahead of me.
it would be good if all sorts of other racing were on it too..
hehe i'd hope so ;)

No rest for the wicked, as they say...
Yesterday the forum I co-admin (Formula 1 Home) was restored (though I found out a bit later that some of the blog admin functions such as "Add New Entry" are still not operational).
Several hours later, one of the fora I contribute to (the Fisichella Forum) lost its landing page and the next thing I know the air is filled with "restructure" (officially, the forum is closed until restructure is completed, but the sub-sections are still there).
Is there any point asking when all the fora I use will manage to be fully operational again?
and your both ahead of me. ;)
the only really useful thing about 3.6 is the deferred script loading. beyond that i can't see much difference. the fancy search box still only works in safari/chrome.
I like the pizza thing 3.7 has instead of the swirly thing for showing the loading progress of tabs
nope? i'll keep that quiet then and be smug at some undetermined point in the future.
why is that?
you have now! ;)
firefox is behind the html5 curve by comparison, i guess.
but you're none the wiser?
I forone think they should un-awesome the awesome bar. For me it is still the average bar.
ah yes this is true. i didn't realise it used html5. :)
ooh, haven't seen that. do you have the cool tabs in the top bar too?
less-than-awesome bar?
oh yes. quite funky if you use on android/iphone too.
I typed in 'cal' last night and the link to google calendar came up, i thought that was pretty awesome
oh cool. i tried it out on chrome when you first mentioned it. *waits for firefox to catch up*
joins james.
no :(
might be waiting a while ;) i imagine 4.0 should be at the same level as Chrome whenever they decide to release that.
Just before Christmas I had to rent a car over Christmas. I used Hertz who I have used before and then the day before I had to get the car they phoned to say that due to the bad weather they wouldn't have the car in stock... They told me to try renting with any other company and they would refund the difference if it was a similar car.
I phoned Europecar who had a car available at 1 days notice and was next door to the Hertz place. And the whole thing worked fine.
Now it comes time to sort out the Hertz claim for the difference. I can't lay my hands on the invoice for some reason. I phone Europecar fearing the worst. The person from Europecar answers after 3 rings, checks my details and e-mails me a pdf copy of my invoice.
I now have to print that out write the handy 12 digit reference number from Hertz on it and FAX!!! FAX!!! it to them...
Bye bye Hertz.
do you have one?
you would be surprised where faxes turn up - it's often the most reliable way to transmit documents from offshore to onshore!
I'm sure they would've accepted it in the post
But if europecar can e-mail me an electronic copy why I can't e-mail it to Hertz?
I do now!
no idea
I asked they said... "I am afraid we can only accept by post or fax"
To be fair the fax thing was like a kind of final straw thing. The canceling the car the day before was more upsetting!
That does seem quite strange. Who doesn't accept email?
For some reason I was thinking the other way round and you were surprised at Hertz not emailing invoices out, but I'm easily confused.
speaking of sending things, I have to take the company post to the post office now. back soon.
I could spend hours and horus on the ModNations Racer just perfecting my own tracks. It's only a limited selection for this beta but I love the Melbourne track I've made for my little karters!
Good evening!
Gonna have a quick go at it now, looks good by the looks of things.
This is one of those hi, and bye, posts as I'm off again.
I read this earlier...
Linky
Looks like USF1 will crashtest their car on the 15th Feb...but test before crashtesting? :S
I wouldn't drive it!
Evening all
Insanely enough it is not only allowed but quite normal. Many of the cars at the early tests have not passed their crash test most years.
Found this mentione in a MAGAZINE today. McNish and Herbert were on the main stage at ASI when Brundle crashed the interview. Amazingly enough they didn't all talk over each other. It's in two parts.
I was at the race where McNish had the accident he described. First time I had seen or heard of him but I knew he was going to be good even though he made a mess of his car.

Hello!! i have survived ALL of my retakes! :) just a mock exam next week and a module exam the week after and that's the end of my exams till may! still got lots to do, but it's like a huge weight off my shoulders :)
so how is everyone? i hear everyone's (well my) favourite driver is getting a bridge named after him.- what an honour :P
Woohoo! :D
will you visit?
seconded.
Well done you
Evening, home again.
He is?
well done..
yep
the bridge?...depends if it's really pretty i suppose.. if it's just well a boring bridge then no.. but if its a nice place to take pics then maybe.. might check out the pub too.. but i'm not fussed :)
I just want to say I'm like firefox 3.6 so far :D
I think that is better than Lewis getting a street named after him.
anything stand out?
Upon further inspection, I have noticed it is 0.1 more than Firefox 3.5
:D:D:D
seems a lot faster starting up and isn't hogging so much memory. the personas seem great except i know i will never us them ;)
Jenson already has a street and pub named after him.. why don't they just rename Frome? :P
I prefer using personas rather than themes. Dunno why. Maybe because I have a Muse persona.
Also, spellchecking seems to actually WORK on this version. Just noticed now as I type this comment.
"Where do you hail from?
I hail from the village of Jenson Button.
Is that where he was born then?
No, it's called Jenson Button.
...oh."
You can stop there when you drive to see Lukeh
ah but is it 0.1 times better? ;-)
ahh, the memory thing is annoying.. i may download this too
aaaand i quote;
"The bridge is going to be built anyway so we decided it would be a good idea to name it after him."
#not here
hehe. i've stuck with the default theme for as long time now. but personas are a nice touch. i just wonder what will happen to them if they really are changing the layout of 4.0.
It does sound like a good village name when you put it like that :-)
Indeed. I don't know how good it is as I haven't opened many tabs yet. I shall test it later.
I will ask my friend whose from there if he minds it being renamed :)
:) sounds like a good place to stop for lunch then :P
I wonder if Jenson likes Greggs...
i bet he's thrilled. he got to try on awesome suits and make funny faces at the camera today so i'm sure he'll get over it soon :)
why do i get the feeling you'd ask him that if you ever met him :P not sure if there are greggs in monaco though?
He should take a look at my guide to a good lunch then! :)

Thanks Steven, some very good points were made by the guys.
I would love to see the three of them as a sportscar team. Not only fast but brilliant with the media and the fans
ah-ha. i have learn'ed that firefox 3.6 also supports gradients...
Great. What'sa gradient?
glad you asked.

Just seen this and an email in my inbox: http://twitter.com/Paolo_Bandini/statuses/8034288327
They want some fuel data but I might be too late responding. Still, it's cool eh?
wowow!
I replied saying he could and I sent him my phone number, but I might have been too late to respond. What a compliment though!
three hours? i wouldn't have thought so.
He gave me one to two hours. I emailed him at two hours 30 minutes. That was half an hour ago. He hasn't called or responded yet...
So you are the expert on the subject now?
I don't know who that is but assuming it as a Guardian journo from the email? Looks like the Twitter account was set up especially since you are the only followee/follower and the only tweet on the account!
ahh, chuff :(
Just listenin to the latest TWIG. Qwuote from Leo.
The Nexus one knocks the socks off the iphone.
What kind of Apple fanboy is he?
It's the guardian journo, yes. I hear him on the Football Weekly podcast too...
er from his email address i mean
Some people think so.
Seriously, this fuel post has gone mad - I think I have been sent links to it in forums from about 6 different languages!
That is a domain
FF3.6 does seem quite a lot snappier doesn't it, i like it...
That is the Guardian domain.
He has also left a comment on my blog (as yet unpublished).
it's important for this season. very important.
Indeed. Should I publish the comments yet?
3,000 people have viewed that post!!!

I had never noticed the suggestions box on your blog. Nice to see you got some commenters from interview with the bloggers. Good to see that idea had some positive impact. I think the original idea was Christine's so well done Christine. I wonder if anyone else knows if they got readers from there.
new mock the week on bbc2 now i think :)

No Frankie Boyle. BOOOOOOOO!!
he quit.. silly man
Bad move. It will never be the same again
I am sure they did :)
Just quickly - doing my UCAS application now, which option do I need to pick on the Student Support section if I'm going to get a student loan or something?
It would be interesting if we knew though. It only just occurred to me that we did 12 hours of content and no-one has any real idea if anything happened as a result. I know it is impossible but it would be interesting to see what the results of it were. Did people go and look into any of the things mentioned? Did anyone take a real interest in something new as a result?
2 things, you need to apply for the loan, it dosent come automatically, but i'll just look at my app. 2 secs
can you give me the options? i did mine a few weeks ago, can't remember what my teacher and i put down..
Ars on thje new Firefox: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2010/01/hands-on-firefox-36.ars

If so, I did go check something out. One of the racing sims those two guys mentioned.
Having trouble remembering names now, however. Brain go bad.

student finance england
Student Finance England I'd have said
The idiot in me nearly asked where the option for Student Finance Wales was *facepalm*
I chose Student Finance England i think..
aw bless you :)
:D
bless ya
however, there is a Student finance scotland i think. so you may have a point
Cool, I chose Student Finance England and picked norfolk from the student support arrangements list.
Yes, SFW is on my forms. I didn't have SFE, hence why I nearly asked.
does anyone know what month GCSE exams took place in 2007?
I think it's the date in which you received the certificate i.e. the results finalised? GCSEs tend to span from May - June... but are certified in september.. i think.
So putting september would be a safe bet?
it should be on your gcse certificates but i would say so yes.
any month between May and Sept is good. They're basically trying to work out if you took them in November or Juney time
I know what to write for TT but am struggling to focus. Coffee I think..
I've got ideas for 4 other blog posts too.
Join the club. So many ideas, so little time
That's funny. I have plenty of time, but no ideas ;-)
quick calendar plug: http://sidepodcast.dev/calendar/
now with added thursday thoughts / friday fun.
Funny thing, Google strips out the words Thursday and Friday if you don't keep an eye on it.
ooh link fail: http://sidepodcast.com/calendar/
(needs more help from alex)
I can understand Thursday, but Friday?! Fridays are great. Why strip out Friday?
was going to say, is that some secret site ;)
Booo. Firefox 3.6 looks the same as 3.5. Where's the excitement?
local development site. am coding new stuff in another tab.
#confidential
uuuuuhhhhhhhh ;-)
hello sidepodpeople
Booo. Firefox 3.6 looks the same as 3.5. Where's the excitement?
It is more thing behind the scenes that have been improved. There is some info here on changes :) http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Firefox_Has_Been_Hitting_the_Gym_-_Version_3DOT6_Is_Faster__More_Capable
Odd thing about FF3.6 is it I opened this in a new tab and it put it next to the two other SPC links I have open, rather than at the end of the list. Will have to watch that one...
in the code, supposedly?
they borrowed that from IE. i think i prefer it.
It does? doesn't seem to with me.
Look who has an iphone :) http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs163.snc3/19037_1189835469628_1340608456_30461535_1410714_n.jpg
it opens the new tab next to the one that calls it, not at the end like before
code, shmode. I want bells! Whistles! Exploits!
...oh hang on.
I was going to ask about whether we're continuing these into the season, guess that answers it ;-)
faster
and chrome. I'm still undecided over which I prefer (which probably means that it's the same for me...)
you think they should? friday's are going to be busy.
No, purely off season fun.
wait for firefox 4.0, end of 2010 or beginning of 2011
I'm not sure I like all this Ferrari red-and-white. Why all this white???
No not at all, we'll be far too busy. I mean I'd have done them anyway if they were, but I'd rather they weren't!
Note also on Calendar... is there a way to tell if people are using them?
not that i know of.
They do that every now and then
hmm. I'm used to it appearing at the end, it's how I work out how long some tabs have been there..
Not good.
Its a fact that i've decided all media accreditation processes should be like GP2/GP3's
All online. They ask for name, address, number, upload a photo, what type of pass you want. Click go. Sorted
Love it
i have a red felt tip pen? i could try and get close enough to them to sort out the white issue? i kinda like it though.
me too. but now I just start from the end and not from the begining...
You like a car with more white on it? i wonder why that might be ;)
ok, no worries, just curious if I could find out if anyone was using mine.
also I'm still slightly jealous that you can embed and I can't :-)
do it at Goodwood
I shall throw my jacket on it
....but that is red and white too. Hmm.
if i find a fix i'll yell. but trust me, i'm just as annoyed no-one can embed f1minute player.
actually I quite like it in yesterday's picture of Alonso. it could be the angle of the shot though...
I love the new Ferrari livery. Just one problem.
#needslesssantander
wordpress hasn't a 'put html code here' thing for the sidebar?
Have we seen this Toyota bad news?
Yep that's also a loss from the sidebar. You also can't modify YouTube embeds to change the size, you've got to use WP code.
whooops.
only what they say you can add.
It's a matter of forbid bank advertisement based in that they are very dangerous. then it will be replaced by some white bars as Malboro...
Wow..
Should have spent less time making oscar-worthy films
:-(
the idea of both Jenson and Fernando being at goodwood is something i can not comprehend :) just too awesome.
oi! it's a nice colour! the livery/ overalls looks nice. Am I the only one that thinks this?..
Nope, but then I'm happy seeing Fernando ;)
hehe nah i agree. am just messing
hehe :) there is nothing wrong with the old brawn livery it's beautiful :P
There is only one colour for Ferrari, and white isn't it. Phillip Morris have a lot to answer for.
Agreeeeeed
true dat
they have had all red cars for a few seasons now, need something different this year ;)
The one at Autosport looked orange, not just because of the lighting.
is it blue?
it's still red... it's just got another colour on it now :P i have a theory that it's actually a requirement of a contract somewhere that we have at least one white and red car on the f1 grid. With no toyota anymore the only other team with enough red paint would be ferrari.. ;)
So that's where Michael was supposed to park
thats quite a picture, shame they aren't in any order.
Yikes! There's a site to scare any McLaren fan.
Those cars on the 3rd and 4th row... those are proper F1 cars..
#oldman
i think they painted it alonso's colours specially.
They had red and white Ferraris in the mid 70s way before Philip Morris
Nothing wrong, ha.
#nothere
hmmm a likely escape...
The earliest red and white one there is from 71-72.
Ferraris have also raced in yellow in 1962 (I think) and John Surtees clinched the 1964 championship in a blue and white car because Ferrari was having one of his strops.
I would say the number 4 (second row), and I'm not THAT old...
Steven was watching in 1962. How old is this guy?
:D
i'm applying for mastermind on your behalf.
Special subject: yellow cars in F1.
Specialist subject? Why Ferraris aren't always red.
Um. So. There's this behind-the-scenes nobody-can-see-it project in IndyCar called Delta Wing, for the Next-Gen car to replace the Dallaras. They've got Dallara working on a revised version of the same car, but this Delta Wing is also being investigated to see if it is feasible.
I'm trying to find out if this is accurate or just a fan thing, but this appears to be a mockup of the car...
@indy44 Here's a pic of Delta Wing car. Will be presented at the Chicago Autoshow http://twitpic.com/z49kz
I know stuff from way further back than that.
Too much EJ
Are you Wikipedia, with a Scottish accent?
I am so glad I am not here to see that...
:-)
it doesn't look much like a delta wing. if that helps?
I first found out about the yellow Ferrari at ASI years ago when someone was asking about a model of one because it was the only F1 Ferrari he didn't have. It is the Belgian colour apparently but I have no idea why they ran it.
That looks very different and very futuristic.
And just as accurate
I have a model of a 1986 McLaren MP4/2c in yellow.
Apparently sportscars are going to have shark fins in the near future to stop them taking of when they get sideways and rolling.
Keke Rosberg's car in Adelaide
I thought it was Portugal?
shoot!
I think it looks pretty cool but I can't see how it will work. This is just at concept stage though.
and there was I thinking... "there was a yellow McLaren?"
It was the last race of the season and his last F1 race. I assumed Adelaide but there were seasons around then that ended in Portugal
I was thinking "na, he won't get this one..."
According to wikipedia the last race of the season was Adelaide. That was the Mansell tyre explosion race. Great excuse for him to get out the car and do his drama queeen act.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_Formula_One_season
Correct. Marlboro's colours in Portugal were/are yellow and white, everywhere else it's red and white. :)
Photos on FORIX show it was Portugal which was round 14 of 16
http://forix.autosport.com/gp.php?l=0&r=19860014&c=49 (sub req)
hehe!
I used to play picture games on F1 forums and gleaned lots of information about random stuff as a result. I know more than most people give me credit for. ;)
Right, as quickly as I arrive, I now have to leave for my own sanity. Night all!
bye chap.
Night. I'm writing a TT response at the moment.
Just shows how the memory plays tricks on you. I could have sworn it was his last race. McLaren also ran a light blue bersion of the livery with Lowenbrau branding but I haven't a clue when that was.
Those are always popular time fillers on forums. Hard to do in comments but I have seen it on a few forums where one person puts a picture up and the first person to name the car, driver, track and year posts the next one. They can go on for ever
I think that was in the 70s for the US GPs
Actually, I always thought the yellow MP4/2c was at Adelaide too. Not sure why.
Just to add, this has already been debunked, it isn't the Delta Wing car...
Definitely 70s. Seems idd not to use Marlboro branding in its biggest market
certainly possible in a breakout thread. problem is the legality of reproducing the picture.
for a foundation course, you don't need a reference do you? I wasn't told by NUCA that I'd need one.
oooh. You havent got time really, so i'd say just leave it, and they'll contact you if they need one. thats whAT they did me
Most forums tend to ignore that but it would probably make it impossible if you follow the rules because the pictures chose are generally of oddities like yellow McLarens and there is never going to be a great number of pictures of obscure cars
I just put the not required and I agreed with the college/uni etc. thing. Is that ok?
umm, if thats the only other option then year. i forget how i did it, it was only a few months ago!
it'll have to be. i wasn't told any anyone there that i'd need a reference and I only knew about it just now when doing that section of the application.
it's the kind of thing, that if you had the money, you'd throw a brown envelope full of the stuff in LAT's direction and go archive trawling.
maybe one day.
If your uni know about it then i'm sure it will be fine... as Jon says if they receive your application and need a reference they'll write to you asking for one i should imagine.
I think they were for extra cars, like for Mark Donohue
it should be fine, i was asked for a second reference with my lastest app so they'll just email you if theres an issue
OK cool. Where would I get one anyway? Last school?
or employer yeah.
That would be nice.
So, I've paid the course selection fee of £9, so does this mean my application's been sent?
That would make sense. So 74 or earlier then
does it say its been sent?
Well certainly 1971 on a M19, but there were others
Quarter of the way down th page there is a pic of one of the factory cars with Tambay in it in 1978
Ah yes there it is!
"Thank you. Your payment has been accepted and your application is now complete. It will shortly be processed and, provided there are no errors, sent electronically to the universities and colleges you have chosen."
sorted
Good, so that another thing I can cross off on my 2010 List :P
that would be amazing! think of the photos! :)
i bet they're not all digitised either.
omg! you make a very good point, how amazing :D
There is such a rich history of interesting F1 cars.
Mind you, there is more interesting Le Mans cars as well.....
okay time to sleep, school in the morning and what not. night all! xx
Night lou
night.
night lou
Did we discuss Rossi's test yet? Seems pretty impressive, even with slicks blah blah...
I have seen the pics but that is all
I bet there's a lot of motorsport history not yet available online.. Motorsport Digital Archivist would be fantastic job..
night
I'm not sure what to make of it. He was close to last year's pole time, but I'm struggling to see how he did it on GP2 tyres unless he missed a chicane or something, unless 2008 cars were that much faster they made up the difference...
The car could have been under weight
he was on the times of kimi's pole in 2008, in the same car. But kimi had fuel and grooved tyres
and 1.4s off the time of Q2 from massa the same year.
But then again, he's not a car driver, so I think his performance is impressive
I think his performance is incredible. It beats me how he can only spend a couple of days in the car then not sit in it for a year or more then get back in and not kill his neck in 2 laps
I reckon it's all that time racing bikes. I know they don't pull 5G but they must produce some Gs when braking and cornering.
It can't load their necks like F1 does. They need different things from their neck and supporting muscles.
That's what I said.
never thought about that. I would guess they suffer more vertical forces than lateral, but they don't have comfortable seats to sit.
No it's not. You said being on a bike helps them cope with F1 and I say it doesn't
Fair enough.
