Mid-way through the week already, and we have reached the twentieth day of this brand new year. It's Will Wright's birthday today and I'm only telling you that because he created The Sims, and The Sims is brilliant. Now, moving on to more Formula 1 related things, here are some of the items we're currently talking about:

  • The BBC Olympics blog has an interesting post about how the GB cycling team relates to the McLaren Technology Centre. It's one of those: "F1 is useful to other technologies, honest" type posts, but it makes for good reading if you have a spare five minutes.
  • We were intrigued by the news about Pedro de la Rosa yesterday, particularly his signing over the anticipated Heidfeld announcement. We talked about it in the breakout thread, there's a Pedalo shaped F1 Big Picture, and RG has written about the news, coming to the conclusion that it's not all bad.
  • The official F1 site have a history piece up about Mercedes, and how they fit into the bigger motorsport picture. There's nothing new in there, but it's a great recap of how they've got where they are - which is basically taking over the grid. This piece reminded me of the mini series episode I did on the Safety Car and Medical Car, both powered by Mercedes.

Anyway, that should keep you going for now. As I said, we're mid-way through the week, so it's all downhill from here. I'll see you in the comments.

Plugging in this thread because I posted it late in the day - I have finished my review post about the Autosport show! You may want to put it somewhere for a rainy day because it is quite a bit longer than a usual blog post (sorry about that, next time I'll break it into pieces)

Also, Campos have said their car has passed the final FIA crash test. So do we still think they won't make it despite this?

I keep forgetting Dallara make the car. They'll make it, but i dont know how good it will be

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 00:22

I keep forgetting Dallara make the car. They'll make it, but i dont know how good it will be

So it's a Spanish team which has a car made by Italians, a British engine and a Brazilian as lead driver. Certainly an international affair.

  • me20/01/2010 at 00:23

I keep forgetting Dallara make the car. They'll make it, but i dont know how good it will be

or if the team will be able to afford to run it.

    that too

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 00:24

According to the Autosport article, they are close to agreeing terms with an investor.

Fair play to US F1 for listening to the feedback

Nothing amazing there but it was a 200% improvement on their previous offerings

I liked how they bothered to put the US F1 logo on the unpainted nose assembly, nice touch

They should just keep the whole car in naked black carbon fiber.

Maybe they'll go to the first races trying to find investor in the meantime, and they'll fold as Super Auguri by the time they get to Europe (or before if Bernie decides that 12 teams is better for his economics...)

  • Jon Waldock20/01/2010 at 00:28

it happens occationally in the lower formulae, they look loooooverly (sometimes)

Depends who is sponsoring it. However, I think I heard Anderson say that they were going to go with the traditional American Racing Paint sceme which is either dark blue with two white racing stripes or white with two dark blue racing stripes.

Our composite guys do a lot of stuff like that and with the impending 787, composite repairs are gonna boom

I found out the other day that the fuselage is just 3 pieces!

If you're stood next to the McRae Subarus, there's a big door nearby, it was through there.

  • Pat W20/01/2010 at 01:01

Not that there was anything of note in there. F1 In Schools was there but were packing up by the time Chris and I found it. The oval bit was a selection of cars parked up, and some more stands selling parts and general racing photos (I'd be annoyed if I were one of those guys, because I'd imagine a lot of people would have skipped that hall)

So there was four seats left...

    One to Toro Rosso

    One to Renault

    Two to USF1

Heidfeld has to go to one of those seats... right? He really can't go to Toro Rosso because of Red Bull's development driver program. Would he want to be a deputy to Kubica again? Errrr. Would he actually go to USF1? He would practically have to work for free since they want pay drivers.

Things to think about. I like Quick Nick but just don't know where he is going.

Not sure he was deputy at BMW Sauber to Kubica. One thing that seems to be being forgotten is how good he is at car set-up - something that Robert still has a long way to go. I think Nick and Robert worked well as team mates, very briefly they lead the constructor's championship in 2008. I do agree that going to Renault he will become the deputy. USF1 seemed to want Wurtz, well they would have had to pay him - with Nick you would get Wurtz on speed.

    Yeah your right.

Is it easy to say that the only one of those seats that will pay anything will be Renault possibly if that? I have the feeling that Renault will pick one of their development drivers. The same for Toro Rosso. Campos makes some sense because they need someone to compliment Bruno Senna. Not sure that USF1 would be interested.

  • neo20/01/2010 at 08:11

Cook? I just hacked at it with a knife over the draining board :P

You should bisect it, and make the fruit to be like a chessboard with a knife, then turn it, thus you could easily eat it.

Torro Rosa has not vacant seat - although the contract not finalised - it is for Tim.

Renault have said they wanted a driver to push Kubica. Bob Bell also said the following...

“The real target for us is to build for 2011 and a championship campaign. But we have realistic expectations for 2010. We are not going to produce a car that catapults us to the front because F1 is very competitive. But our 2010 expectations are to run towards the front and challenge for the top three.”

Given recent experience of Romain Grosjean their expectations seems widely optimistic. Whose going to develop the car - Kubica? Which two of the following teams are they going to be able to beat Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull to be in the top three?

The question really is how much capitol does the Renault new owners have to spend on the team? Not only that, do they still have any drivers coming up the Formula Renault pipeline? Remember, even when they were a factory team, they had a consistent track record of having one driver of experience (Trulli, Fischi, Alonso) and one from their development programs or other young drivers (Alonso, Kovi, Nelson Cheater Jr, and Roman Groz) on the team every year. Then again, that might of been a Fat Boy's policy when he ran the team.

Renault may want to go for experience for a change after their experiences with Heikki and Grosjean ...

  • Christine20/01/2010 at 08:41

    Good morning all.

Renault may want to go for experience for a change after their experiences with Heikki and Grosjean ...

I think the lack of opportunity for test is a big influence here. I will argue that Heikki did reasonably in the second part of his Renault season, but it was a time of more generous testing.

Lotus have gone for two experienced drivers and I reckon that will give them the edge over the other new teams - just in set up alone.

Someone told me it was going to snow. Instead I had the worst night sleep EVER because of rain. boo

  • Alison in Dubai20/01/2010 at 09:47

Yes. It's not really helping! No-one really reminded me that even though it's winter here, it doesn't make me any further from the equator :(

Oh yes on actual snow twice (2 occasions once for a one day thing, one for a 5 day holiday) I think. I fell over a lot. On the holiday I was with my brother and some cousins. We started on day 1 in the kind of introduction thing. By the end of the week my brother was bumped up two class levels, my other cousin finished the week course of lessons. I think I was doomed to repeat day 2 of the lessons for the rest of the week.

The Nick Heidfeld one is done in a similar fashion. Poor effort really.

Grosjean hasn't updated in a while has he? Probably busy doing double-shifts in his bank to cover his overdraft after travelling around most of the globe last year.

Oh, no, it was a real slope. We had a go on the baby one at the bottom and then if you were good at that you got to have a go on the real one as well.

There are treadmills for skiing? The world is a very strange place.

I guess it's part of the point they're making about the film. About how we look at outsiders, stripping away their own identities. It irritated me a lot tbh. It was all too obvious for my taste.

admittedly i wasn't expecting to wait long.

  • Christine20/01/2010 at 11:58

How I would happily do so but I'm a wordpress noob.

I can't remember the exact place without looking, but I believe there is a bit called Tools or Options or something down the side.

It's under Extras, and is a simple checkbox. It shouldn't be an extra because it's stupid.

  • James20/01/2010 at 12:00

can i bribe ya to turn off the "snap" previews?

*quickly turns snap previews off on his blog before Mr C looks*

aha! Done! Didn't realise they were causing issues, sorry

First three jobs when getting a new Wordpress blog:

    1) Turn off snap previews

    2) Replace the Hello World post and the first comment

    3) Change the default theme.

  • James20/01/2010 at 12:02

    :)

hehe. its reminded me i have an F1 blog that i should get around to updating. last post was in november.

ooh, didn't know rossi was testing the ferrari for two days:

    http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/photolarge.php?photoID=143907&catID=4694

something else for your awesomedropdowncalendar, christine?

  • Lukeh20/01/2010 at 12:06

    That's quite the helmet

    Will do.

  • Steven Roy20/01/2010 at 12:06

ooh, didn't know rossi was testing the ferrari for two days:

It's been all over the net for about three weeks.

Still not here but being dragged in

  • me20/01/2010 at 12:06

    That's quite the helmet

looks like he has a very runny nose.

  • Steven Roy20/01/2010 at 12:07

    That's quite the helmet

That is one of his normal sun/moon helmets. He varies the design a lot but for him that is a reasonably standard helmet

  • me20/01/2010 at 12:07

It's been all over the net for about three weeks.

i heard about it, but didn't know it was now. assumed it would be during testing.

i like that the f2008 is suddenly 2 years old and eligible for testing, yet last month was off limits!

  • Nick in Dubai20/01/2010 at 12:09

    must be our new sidebar?

    There is a sidebar?

Is it supposed to be on doohicky or am i missing out.

Also will it get in fights with the horizontal Navbar?

  • RubberGoat20/01/2010 at 12:09

Is it true that the Ferry Across the Mersey always plays the songf?

That's not the Beatles is it? I lived opposite Penny Lane in my first year in halls. Tour buses came round every 20 minutes dawn til dusk in summer blasting Penny Lane out of speakers for the benefit of Japanese tourists. Enough to make you jump out the window.....

    It's not the beatles, no.

Rossi changes his helmet design so often that there is a website about it. The one he is wearing in the Ferrari is at the bottom of the page. He made a mistake in one race and turned up at the next race with a donkey design.

My favourite Rossi helmet is half way down page two where he had his face painted on top of the helmet. Whne he had his head down on the tank anyone in front of him looking over their shoulder saw him grinning at them.

  • Steven Roy20/01/2010 at 12:16

gavin's right though, none of that works well in a car.

Bike helmet designs tend to be a lot more complex that car helmets which tend to be more blocky because of how the helmet is viewed.

nooo, it's part of a free icon set.

i'd link to them but that site died last night and is yet to come back. will do when it does though. not sure they'll stay like that forever, will have to see.

Nope. At the moment I live in a pretty new, furnished, quite small room very close to my faculty with two other people and I'm moving in a older, unfurnished, slightly bigger, slightly farer away flat with only one flatmate and hopefully less noisy. BUT on a hill. Which is nice in the mornings not so nice when you want to go home.

I already know I will hate the hill. I won't be able to just put on my skates and go around the lake because I would die. :(

But the room is cheaper so maybe I can afford to watch F1/rally on my TV again.

  • Steven Roy20/01/2010 at 12:42

    slightly farer away

I love a foreigner's take on the language. Farer should be a word. It is logical and sensible but English never is.

I am sure Kathi knows the correct word but just in case it should be farther or further. They have exactly the same meaning.

I read that as the guide to Stealing Paper...

I was supprised as i didnt realise there was a market for that! :D

  • Alex Andronov20/01/2010 at 13:31

Having looked at Lukeh's guide http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Guide+To+Getting+A+Good+Lunch I noticed he suggested selling your house. It reminded me of a great Billy Connelly joke... Thankfully clean...

He was talking about being in a pub near his home in Scotland and how there is a real mix in the pub of super rich toffs and working class blokes and everything in between. Apparently the super rich guys who's always been rich and didn't feel the need to show off were actually most pally with the working class guys. And this really put the middle class guys nose out of joint. They were always thinking, "why is lord so and so always talking to that guy, can't he see I drive a volvo".

Anyway apparently one day one of the middle class guys comes over and tries to strike up conversation by saying, "oh did you hear I just sold my house for 400,000 pounds and when I bought it it was only 200,000 pounds, what do you think to that?" And when nobody responded he turned and asked one of the working class guys, "what about you, what do you think you'd get if you sold your house?". The guy responded, "about 9 months."

(he lives in a council house... so it would be illegal...)

  • RubberGoat20/01/2010 at 13:48

Just had a moment encompassing two blogs:

It started as a Fork Handles Moment, as I overheard someone say "Oh, you can still say Happy New Year?"

Which got me thinking (and turned it into a Gamboling moment): "How far into the year do you get before it becomes unacceptable to say Happy New Year to somebody?"

  • Tom G20/01/2010 at 15:05

Right, Singstar Queen going away now. Same time next week, I think... Or Saturday at my party, I think...

I say 5th Jan is the last acceptable day.

Stole the company's money via the medium of incompetence.

  • Pat W20/01/2010 at 15:38

Stole the company's money via the medium of incompetence.

We had billing problems (their fault) for a few years when they changed the price of a fixed price contract, which we didn't pick up due to staff changes. After much wrangling leading to us threatening legal action and their refusal to let us switch supplier, they settled with a cheque for a big sum I can't mention. (Guess who had to do the donkey work).

So we eventually switched away but the company we changed to went bust after 18 months and we went on to an emergency supplier, guess which one.. who promptly mis-billed us and refused to acknowledge the error. That account is now with someone else but they still owe us. Grr.

But everyone knows that I have the best pens. I loves my pens... • me20/01/2010 at 16:41

And so the year Rosberg needed to put his name into the hat of top drivers at the moment has already been thrown away.

looks like nico never got a say:

"Michael has a preference for odd numbers. He asked if he could be the odd number and we were happy to accept."

    #ihatemercedesgp

  • Rich20/01/2010 at 16:41

Michael Schumacher has taken Nico Rosberg's #3 at Mercedes GP for the coming season.

Of course the drivers will have completely equal treatment like Michael claims has always been the case and he has never had a number 1 status.

  • me20/01/2010 at 16:42

i thought as much. if merc was gonna say no, i don't think it would've made the news in the first place.

    that's a fair point.

  • RG20/01/2010 at 16:50

If Mercedes were given later numbers, such as 22 and 23, would he have still wanted the odd number?

Cos he is supertisious, he woulda went with 22 cos the last two years have been won in that numbered car.

Good news for TBA in 2010 though.

The Sims has to be the most popular PC game/series ever made, surely. The only thing I can think of that even comes close to the popularity of the Sims is World of Warcraft... and that doesn't excatly have a wide range of appeal to different audiences...

...now I really want to play The Sims 2.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:19

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:22

I've never played The Sims at all.. more into the city building thing..

Same here. I've only played a demo of the Sims on the PS2 but I prefer strategy and building games like Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Sim City, Caesar 3, etc. It forces you to think and get creative when it comes to how you lay out what you're building.

  • Jim Newman20/01/2010 at 19:22

It's not bad but things get tedious very quickly and the game becomes stale after a couple weeks.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:23

My shelf of pc games has a ridiculous amount of simulation/strategy games. I'm an absolute sucker for the city building thing, or generally building/ micro management stuff. Rollercoaster Tycoon, Evil Genius, Theme Hospital, Theme Park, The Movies, Zoo Tycoon, Football manager, etc etc just to name a few...

    many hours wasted. :)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:24

    many hours wasted. :)

Theme Hospital! Man that was epic! :D

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:25

    Woop! Awesome!

I'm wearing it right now, love it! :D Just something about white and flourescent yellow on black that just works!

  • Pat W20/01/2010 at 19:25

Same here. I've only played a demo of the Sims on the PS2 but I prefer strategy and building games like Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Sim City, Caesar 3, etc. It forces you to think and get creative when it comes to how you lay out what you're building.

Yeah... though I always struggled at managing money and always go into the red on whatever game it is.. a bit like real life ;-)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:26

I'm wearing it right now, love it! :D Just something about white and flourescent yellow on black that just works!

Only £20 as well. Well chuffed with that.

  • Lukeh20/01/2010 at 19:27

    Very nice :)

  • Lukeh20/01/2010 at 19:28

Yeah... though I always struggled at managing money and always go into the red on whatever game it is.. a bit like real life ;-)

Ctrl + Shift + C... motherlode... damnit it doesn't work in real life. Damn you will wright. ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:31

    Very nice :)

See I was going to get my dad one of these from Silverstone but they'd run out at the stand I went to so I got him a white Jenson one, same as mine.

Got one of the new McLaren zip t-shirts as well in silver. Looks much better now they've taking away all that flaring around the shoulders. Much cleaner and tidier.

  • Jon Waldock20/01/2010 at 19:36

    holy...

click it on large on black and it gets better :)

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:36

we'll do a post about this later, but just a heads up for the comments.

our drop will expire later this year, and it'll cost us $50 per month to keep it going at the current size. we can't afford to support that, so we've started introducing support for more services which do similar things.

    flickr is one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ladylaney/4290468059/

and there others like twitpic and qik and youtube, all of which integrate nicely into doohickey and lclt.

starting soon, we'll begin to plug those services more as well as figure out what to do with the 41GB of rather fantastic existing content.

anyhow. just a quick heads-up. you have plenty of time if you'd like to download your content and locate it elsewhere. more soon and big cheers to dropio peoples for offering so much free space for so long.

    Ferrari livery? http://www.marca.com/2010/01/20/motor/formula1/1264003356.html

    Ferrari livery? http://www.mar...mula1/1264003356.html

Might just be a testing livery?

In which anycase, they shouldn't be testing?

  • Tom G20/01/2010 at 19:40

    Ferrari livery? http://www.mar...mula1/1264003356.html

Well it's certainly eye catching. I'd forgotten what a Ferrari livery was like with white.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:40

    woah!

    Wow! I like! :D

  • James20/01/2010 at 19:40

Might just be a testing livery?

Its the F60, my guess a photoshop much like the Mercedes one.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:41

    Wow! I like! :D

And do I spy Alonso back in his blue and yellow helmet colours as well?

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:41

Its the F60, my guess a photoshop much like the Mercedes one.

much better quality though. very nice.

  • RG20/01/2010 at 19:41

Its the F60, my guess a photoshop much like the Mercedes one.

A very good photoshop to be fair.

  • Tom G20/01/2010 at 19:42

Its the F60, my guess a photoshop much like the Mercedes one.

An incredibly good one, at that.

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:42

A very good photoshop to be fair.

i really like the look of it. i hope that's a close approximation.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:43

much better quality though. very nice.

Look at the picture next to the main one. Source is Ferrari. I say that's the real deal.

  • RG20/01/2010 at 19:43

i really like the look of it. i hope that's a close approximation.

I hope so too. Ferrari were getting a bit boring with constant red and barcodes all the time.

  • James20/01/2010 at 19:43

    Another image: http://www.f1revolution.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/santander.jpg

Its from a Santander promotion I believe.

And do I spy Alonso back in his blue and yellow helmet colours as well?

    Indeed. http://estaticos04.marca.com/albumes/2010/01/15/penultimo_dia/1263584287_extras_albumes_0.jpg

    :)

  • Tom G20/01/2010 at 19:44

Look at the picture next to the main one. Source is Ferrari. I say that's the real deal.

It must be an image to show what the car will be like with the new sponsorship, as James said, a Santander promo.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:46

Have to admit - that's is one good looking livery.

  • James20/01/2010 at 19:46

Its apparently not a photoshop, Alonso drove the F60 in Paul Ricard some days ago for a promotional event.

Its apparently not a photoshop, Alonso drove the F60 in Paul Ricard some days ago for a promotional event.

Can't see it being the actual livery though.

  • Tom G20/01/2010 at 19:47

Its apparently not a photoshop, Alonso drove the F60 in Paul Ricard some days ago for a promotional event.

Did think it looked too good to be a photoshop.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:47

    yay!

So can we now say that Mr C actually likes Ferrari now?

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:47

Can't see it being the actual livery though.

    not enough red?

    it matches their overalls.

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:48

So can we now say that Mr C actually likes Ferrari now?

    i love that livery.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:48

    i love that livery.

A great paintjob and his favourite driver all in one. I think we'll take that as a yes ;) :P

  • RG20/01/2010 at 19:48

    not enough red?

Was thinking sponsorship wise, I thought they had more than Santander?

  • me20/01/2010 at 19:50

Was thinking sponsorship wise, I thought they had more than Santander?

ethiad are on the right wing, not sure about others.

i don't understand how the run was legal though?

  • Lukeh20/01/2010 at 19:50

    Ferrari livery? http://www.mar...mula1/1264003356.html

I like the red and white, especially the back wing, but there are santander logos everywhere!

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:50

Was thinking sponsorship wise, I thought they had more than Santander?

Maybe it will be those colours, just with a couple more sponsors come Bahrain.

  • James20/01/2010 at 19:50

Was thinking sponsorship wise, I thought they had more than Santander?

i imagine some more stickers will appear. this was so santander could show off their deal with ferrari.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 19:51

i don't understand how the run was legal though?

Similar one to when Badoer did that Shell promo run?

  • James20/01/2010 at 19:52

i don't understand how the run was legal though?

well considering we're only finding out now, maybe no one knew ;)

  • RG20/01/2010 at 19:52

i don't understand how the run was legal though?

I was hinting at that earlier.

  • Pat W20/01/2010 at 20:02

I like the red and white, especially the back wing, but there are santander logos everywhere!

I'm not keen on it, too much white on the wings.

I'd imagine the promo event was for Santander with that many logos!

  • Steven Roy20/01/2010 at 20:07

I'm not keen on it, too much white on the wings.

I'd imagine the promo event was for Santander with that many logos!

They may be trying to see which logos shoe up best on TV or something like that. It's not unusual for a team to do a run to find that out. Then they can decide which logos they want where. Or they could just be pumping stupid amounts of money into Ferrari

  • Danny20/01/2010 at 20:08

I'm not keen on it, too much white on the wings.

I'd imagine the promo event was for Santander with that many logos!

It is a little OTT on the Santander logos. I imagine marketing types were sitting in a room with a laser pen, pointing at each one and giving a price.

"Rear wing - that'll be 2 million for the season. Wing mirror - you can have that for 50k."

  • Rich20/01/2010 at 20:15

I like the red and white, especially the back wing, but there are santander logos everywhere!

To me it is just boring Ferrari with some white added. When it covers to livery there is only one team with any creative idea and that is Red Bull - Toro Rosso - which are gorgeous especially STR.

  • Scott Woodwiss20/01/2010 at 20:16

Stephen Fry just won a National Television Award. His first words - "O.M.G!" :D

  • Rich20/01/2010 at 20:16

"Rear wing - that'll be 2 million for the season. Wing mirror - you can have that for 50k."

I think the wing mirror is a bargain at 50k!

he said at AI that it would be something he'd interested in doing for fun.. so either the union jack one (as he probably had loads of those :P ) or.. if he's still sponsored by monster then the black and green monster one i should image..

So, Renault are saying they may not announce a second driver until after testing. A little odd, Kubica will be busy. Do they have any reserve drivers/testers confirmed?

So, Renault are saying they may not announce a second driver until after testing. A little odd, Kubica will be busy. Do they have any reserve drivers/testers confirmed?

To my knowledge only Robert is confirmed. Robert is on record as saying he wants an experienced second driver not a rookie. The main reason is they get more data on which to setup the car.

I may one day regret saying this, but I promise to do a guest post on the 2009 and 2010 Dakar's... but first I'll have to scan the pictures from this year and upload them, which will take me an undefined amount of time ;-)

BTW Michael Schumacher has swapped his racing number from Four to Three

Clearly the FIA listened to special pleading - normally race numbers can't be changed at this stage.. Admittedly in this case Mercedes has a point...

he said at AI that it would be something he'd interested in doing for fun.. so either the union jack one (as he probably had loads of those :P ) or.. if he's still sponsored by monster then the black and green monster one i should image..

i easily him ending up in the same team with fellow monster endorser Robby Gordon. They'd be driving Hummers. :D
