Ah, today it is Jenson Button's birthday. The man is World Champion, has lots of money and a beautiful girlfriend, is facing the "fresh challenge" that he so desperately craved for 2010, and is now turning the big 3-0. What do you get the man who has everything?? Meanwhile, here's some of the things we're talking about:

  • Excellent cartoonist Stuart Taylor has returned after the success of his original guest post with a follow up - taking a closer look at how young Nelson Piquet Jr might fare once he crosses the Atlantic for the NASCAR series. Don't forget you can rate posts now, so make sure you select the required amount of stars once you've enjoyed the cartoon.
  • The first F1 Debrief of 2010 was released yesterday, a slightly muted affair as we couldn't do it live, but I hope it is still worth it. We cover all manner of topics, catching up on the state of Formula 1 after what was pretty much just a week's worth of the off season.
  • Opinion is mixed on the success of Autosport International, but I do like their round up post of the big stories and their posted interviews. (Ignore the rankings bit as the top major story. Eh-hem.) Dank has written about his distaste of the event, whilst Scott tells us about his grand day out. I believe Pat is planning a post too, so perhaps he'll have the deciding vote?

That should do it for now. I hope your week has started out okay, and I will see you in the comments.

Night Jon. Just make the steering wheel spikes bigger so that it is touching young Alex's helmet as he's driving....as long as the distnace between Alex's head and the tip of the spike is shorter than the HANS restraints, his idea still works....

It's encouraging and a interesting design... at least from my point of view.

Speaking of my blog. It took me a week to write up this blog post on Penske Racing that I just posted. Lot research went into this one.

It's an interesting dilemma for the new teams. Should they focus on building up speed first or reliability?

Anyone heard of an event call FREErace?

Well if you're sitting comfortably I'll tell you a story....

They had a double page advertisement in AUTOSPORT prior to Christmas asking folk to apply for a driving competition sponsored by Nissan. To apply you just had to send a grovelling email stating why you should be picked.

I got picked, but didn't turn up as they kept changing the venue and dates due to the snow and couldn't get time off work.

And just as well I didn't bother, because the top four winners who go on to compete against the other 'FREEracers' across Europe are none other than British F3/F3 Euroseries driver Nick Tandy and A1GP's Robbie Kerr.

Well that seems jolly fair doesn't it? Pit member's of the public against professional racing drivers?!!

Part two of my AUTOSPORT bashing: writing a letter of complaint about the shockingly woeful subscription service.

I called yesterday to get an address on where to send it to. Researched the address given on Google and wasn't entirely confident it was the right one, so called again this morning, and what do you know? Was completely the wrong address, as this was just for a third-party company who re-sell subscriptions.

  • Alex Andronov19/01/2010 at 11:59

You can do that? I never knew.

Well I think it might be new... You have to have web history turned on. But it's incredibly useful for that thing of "I know I was looking at this page the other day".

After you search click the show options plus sort of top left of results and you'll see the links half way down (if you have let google store your web history).

When the new car does roll out it will be named the RB1, 'RB' being the initials of team principal and former owner Ross Brawn.

Surely that can't be allowed what with Red Bull already using RB?

Williams are now joining in twitter, Rubarrichello must have twisted some arms!

    There's the Hulk

and their "Lady in Communications" who fortunately has the name Williams, although her twitter page does have white text on a white background oddly.

Claire Williams is Mr C's BFF

Because it's not so obvious when people walk past at work that it's me commenting?

  • Jon Waldock19/01/2010 at 13:26

Surely that can't be allowed what with Red Bull already using RB?

it's just how a team calls their car, it may get a bit confusing, but theres no rules against it (as far as im aware)

doubt it's much to do with rubens, claire's had a twitter account for ages.

That's exactly the same article they published when Mercedes first announced it - GMM recycling their own news now?

That sort of thing has happened a lot in the past. The only person I can ever remember having 'problems' with it was EJ. The first Jordan the 191 was originally called the 911. Porsche objected and EJ agreed to change in return for a 911

Personally, I think Mercedes should change it to RBM1 so it's a bit less confusing.

I am sure sidepodpeeps can move it. You rent a mobile home then you have the right to move it so long as you get it back by the end of your rental.

It's not that sort of a mobile home :D

The last type number to be used is 123, which is for the Esprit replacement. The last F1 car bore Type 104.

I remember the 104 but I never kept up with road car numbers. I guess it would be too complicated now that they are entirely separate from the car company. THey could always call it the Lotus 6 as that was never used.

I'm checking type numbers now and the 104 was actually used for the Lotus Carlton.

Also, the 109b was the last running F1 chassis. There was another one in the works, Type 112, but that only got as far as the monocoque before it was scrapped when Lotus pulled out.

  • Amy19/01/2010 at 13:41

I think the Herbert Hakkinen Lotus that was the last decent F1 car was the 107 not the 104. By that time they didn't have the money to develop it. It could have been really good.

It's not too bad if you stay within the EU. I have almost the same rights as the Finns so even if decide to stay I probably will keep my German citizenship. + we have ID cards that fit perfectly in my wallet so I never forget to bring my passport to the airport. Germany > Finland

That was 1991 I'm sure. I did ask why CTL only accounts for Lotus F1 cars up to the 102. The reason is because those made after it were done so after the team was sold by the Chapmans. That's not to say they won't maintain them if asked to, but they don't count them as part of their heritage because they don't have anything to do with the Chapman name.

On the subject of USF1, someone posted the Racecar Engineering article onto the Midweek Motorsport Facebook Collective and asked Nick Daman what he thought (he's one half of the 'tailenders' animations).

Neither are very talkative so they make quite a dull pairing. But they both can be quite funny/emotive, so I'd like to see them with new teammates.

For example, putting Kubica with someone like Vettel would be interesting.

Young Piquet says that NASCAR trucks is not a step down.

"For a lot of people who are outside of America, it's a downgrade. But for people that really understand - maybe it's a downgrade in technology of the car -- but in terms of career, of how big the sport is in a lot of ways it's even a tougher step than F1.

Does it sound like he's trying to convince himself though?

I'd understand that argument if he were to race in Cup. But Trucks? Seriously? Even JPM didn't consider Trucks as a stepping stone. If Piquet Jr were that serious about a Cup career, he should've started at ARCA, then moved up to Nationwide, then to Cup (like JPM and Speed before him).

As for the F1 2010 offer, like AUTOSPORT, I suspect it came from Campos.

  • me19/01/2010 at 15:35

Does it sound like he's trying to convince himself though?

depends. if he's doing proper nascar then he's right. if he's doing trucks, he's very wrong.

do we know what he'll be doing?

  • Christine19/01/2010 at 15:36

do we know what he'll be doing?

He plans to make his NASCAR debut with the team in the Truck Series season-opener on February 12, but a deal has been in the works for him to enter the ARCA event at the same track a week earlier.

According to Autosport he had the opportunity of an F1 drive but thought the politics would make it too difficult to return. Amazing PK gets offered an F1 seat with so many drivers around who look to be rather better without seats.

I am sure they would not but there is a risk attached to making a statement that could be refuted - then his career is totally finished. I am guessing it was USF1 providing dad picked up a healthy amount of tabs. Campos said it could not hire 2 Brazilians.

  • Christine19/01/2010 at 16:22

Someone looking for sponsorship. Daddy Piquet has a huge business and lots of good contacts who would consider funding his idiot child's career.

Piquet senior must be gutted that with all the kids he has spread all over the world that he is the only one anyone knows anything about.

Anyone read the new F1 mag?..

Patrick Head is a very clever guy....

When asked in the latest F1 Racing edition if he'd have asked Kimi to drive for Williams he said....

He tried to get Kimi to sign but BMW wouldn't make up the wages and he went on to say...

"But he always made the best of his car. I think Ferrari could well find that they miss him."

What a lovely man... never any bs with Patrick....

Pretty much the only section worth reading but worth it....

Tony George has quit the board of Indy and associated companies.. He was ousted as CEO last year but kept board membership. I'm not yet sure what this means.

    Indianapolis Business Journal (via @MyNameIsIRL)

If anything I think this means F1 returning to IMS is much less likely.

    I read something strange today.

The GP2 test that Schumi did last week was paid in half by the GP2 organisation and the other half was paid for by Mercedes.

Haug said that in an interview.

I am not sure what the deal was but it seems odd Mercedes paying for their driver to develop a car with a Renault engine

    http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/01/19/apple-iphone-os-4-0-features-detailed-also-apple-calling-tablet-the-itablet/

well i imagine they will get the touch eventually. i mean it will be on the itunes store so should be downloadable. I shall try regardless hehe.

  • me19/01/2010 at 21:55

they screwed the touch out of camera. i'll be disappointed if they don't fix that next week too.

  • James19/01/2010 at 21:57

they screwed the touch out of camera. i'll be disappointed if they don't fix that next week too.

i think you may need to let that go... #sorrymrc

i believe the only hardware we get is their shiny new tablet, we have to wait for the next iphone.

  • me19/01/2010 at 21:58

i think you may need to let that go... #sorrymrc

no can do. i would like a new touch with more memory and a camera. i don't need an iphone.

i believe the only hardware we get is their shiny new tablet, we have to wait for the next iphone.

agreed. but the touch could be a teaser leading up to one more thing.

Why not? There is clearly a spot for one in the current touch. I think it's an obvious upgrade. I can't see Apple not putting one in

the fact they see it as the rival for other hand held games consoles, and adding a camera would take away something that the iphone has over the touch.

Hmm. I don't see the two devices as competing, so I don't understand that.

apple make more money on the iphone than the touch i believe so if apple add a camera to the touch it means the iphone loses something specfic to it and all the iphone would have is the ability to make calls.
