It can't possibly be Monday again, can it? It looks like it is. Apparently it is Winnie the Pooh day today, as well, which is good, although I have always preferred Piglet. Autosport International is all over, so we can return to regularly scheduled news, and here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Talking of Autosport International, Franck was spotted on several occasions at the event. This time last year, we were there and I was hiding from him behind a pillar. For 2010, I get to watch all the videos that other people got for me. I've posted two on I Heart Franck here and here, and Pat also got some footage of FKM as well. Yum!
- We promoted the brand new Sidepodcast Calendar recently, and I wrote a post explaining the ins and outs of it. This is just a quick update to say that the calendar now has it's very own page at sidepodcast.com/calendar. It's super duper easy to remember now, and it will be there forever!
- Yesterday, we were talking about the concept of testing and how it's changing. In particular, we're starting to think it has less significance. Martin Brundle thinks different though, and Autosport have video on his views of the future of testing. The video is a funny shape though.
That should do it for now. I hope your Monday is going okay, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.
And in true Sidepodcast fashion, I'm now off to bed. Will endeavour to comment tomorrow sometime, if work doesn't swallow me whole.
adios
about to watch my first murray match of the year. Go other guy!
other guy didnt listen.
:)
Briatore vows never to return to F1 as a team owner
That's... interesting. But not surprising. I wonder if we'll still see him in F1 in some other capacity, though.
Morning, everyone. Nice to be watching tennis over lunch. :D
was he ever a team "owner"?
hallo.
flipping heck, mediatemple wiped out the whole site for about ten minutes. all i well now though,
25 minutes, rather.
Good question. Come to think of it... he never was. Not at Benetton or at Renault. The closest he came to owning anything was Mecachrome after Renault pulled out of F1 in 1997.
But if we look at Flav's actual quote, he says:
So he's actually referring to being a team manager/principal, not a team owner.
I was watching your conversation with MT via Twitter. Boo to them!
2 months and then we'll be free :)
Morning all,
Remember it's Must Comment Monday today - I actually have a post for MCM too - when I publish it later I'll forward a link eh? ;)
ooh, good call.
good afternoon.
hello sir. you made it back!
Good Morning... Goooooood MOOOORNing... We've worked the whole night through... Good Morning... Good Morning to you!

Hello Gavin, Alex, Wolf. :)
Morning ;)
yes yes, made it back :-)
for christine, non-squashed franck: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/widescreen-franck-mp4
Why is YouTube full of these squashed videos?
Guys,
Check out this link: http://speedhunters.com/archive/2010/01/15/event-gt-dubai-24-hours-preparation.aspx
About halfway down there is a pic of a cockpit with an iPhone in it - apparently using a GPS-based timer app to count laptimes!
it's not youtube's fault. it's autosport.
you can tell because when i un-squash the clips, their own logo becomes stretched. so they have a logo in 4:3 format and they're filming in 16:9. somewhere along the line the wrong setting are being pressed so content is coming out screwy. could be on import, could be on export.
youtube just converts what you give it. if there are loads of squashed videos on the web, it's because there a lot of people out there who don't know what they're doing.
woah!
Thanks for this Mr C http://clientsfromhell.tumblr.com/ I have sent it to quite a few people
don't tell anyone, but i found it mentioned in a magazine. thankfully i didn't buy it.
#classified
Yipes!
Hello folks!
I nearly bought a magazine to have with coffee yesterday but when I looked a it closer half the pages had been cut out.....
i know! i instantly wanted to link somewhere to give them credit for the suggestion, and then realised i couldn't.
i saw it on a page of a magazine of which i have no idea of the name and i'll never likely find it again. madness.
cut out? like someone went at it with scissors?
Had you let Nick near the scissors again ;)
Like censored by a government man with a stanley knife!!!
You could have taken a pic and drop.io'd it ;)
?!?
On that site there is a story about a customer saying "We need our website to work regular business hours; from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday."
That reminded me of the famous New York Camera shop BH Photo & Video. It's run by strict Jews so they close their website on a Saturday: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
Yeah that's what I thought. It was just a normal woman's magazine like I'd buy at home. Maybe some of the articles encouraged you to think for yourself or something.....
Not enough clothing?
how can they?
I like: "JPG screenshots of a new website design were sent to the client. Her only feedback was, “I try to click the menu, but nothing happens”."
"Please note that B&H does not process web orders from Friday evening to Saturday evening."
At the bottom of every page
ahh right. i thought you meant they switched off the site.
who knows? cut already.
Well it's still very unusual.
The best high-speed photos you will see all day: http://www.smashingapps.com/2010/01/17/40-stunning-examples-of-high-speed-photography.html
I guess although I presume most web orders wouldn't be processed on a Sunday here they're just not explicit about it.
How is it different from me placing an order for a computer on a staurday and they did not process it until Monday?
The thing is an automatic computer will be doing the processing no? They are deliberately not accepting your money on a Saturday.
how in the world?
http://web.mit.edu/Edgerton/6.51s/2003/ace2.jpg
Yeah I dunno. I saw a photo like that about 20 years ago and I still cannot see how it works!
Oh I see what you mean. I'm not sure what they're getting at specifically tbh. The way to find out would be to order something ;)
Yeah I get what you mean. But my bank didn't take the money until Monday anyway...
I guess it's stated as a matter of principle because it seems to work in a defacto manner
Does that mean the proprietors of BH Photo also don't blog on a Saturday?
still useless
Aaaargh why do I have to watch adverts on the BBC? I've paid my licence fee.... Stupid country.
how do they make stuff fit?
Huh?
In the UK, The BBC has adverts, just that they're for BBC shows, right?
BBC make their programs shorter on purpose.
Hence, for example the behind the scenes stuff at the end of Life. They don't broadcast that bit in places with ads
ooooooh. didn't know that.
They also cut the SIARPC bit from Top Gear...
I don't mind the ads on the page but it's annoying to have to watch a minute long ad before I watch a news clip on their website.
Does the BBC website not have ads in the UK version?
Of course not.
Hello and good morning.
There would be outrage and carnage on the streets!
Morning
It's the same all over the world in iptv or internet, I think.
Because there are loads of ads on the page and ads before every clip in the international version. It's getting like THAT website...
*waves*
Yeah. There's nothing on the British version that's why it was such a shock to me!
BBC Worldwide are pretty moneygrabbing.
try again
I have a strange feeling of deja vu. I'm supposed to be tidying up here before I go out again. I have no idea how I've managed to make such a ridiculous amount of mess!
Are you alright there?
it must be very profitable if they're factoring it into all shows.
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/18/just-another-brick-in-the-wall/
yes, alright, i'm using firefox, can't quote others'.
BBC Worldwide commissions I think 30% of the TV shows we watch? Something like that.
Basically the BBC Budget is Licence Fee + Worldwide profits. But Worldwide gets to control the shows that it creates. They pay for lots of Children's shows with toys in them for that very reason.
Ah you should be able to. Are you using the doohickey at www.sidepodcast.com/realtime
If so, press reply under the comment then click the text you'd like to quote.
and this is what it works
do you see the preview button? pressing that will let you know if quoting is working, without posting.
still useless, i guess that's because i'm still in china
You're clicking the text and it's not appearing in the box you type in?
The BBC are also copying Christine!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/video_and_audio/news_summary/8070822.stm
big stealers!
oh.like this?
although he totally had to slow down right at the end when he ran out of content :)
It's not easy.
yay! thank you.i can use it.
Wooooo
yay :)
#mypoorapartment
:)
Heheh I keep trying to start.... I pick things up and move them around then get distracted!
I did make it to the pool and the coffee shop though!
so, what things?
We just have far far too much stuff in too small a space! I would say a large percentage of our time is spent looking for things we've lost..... :P
The best one that we have ever had was in a meeting with fourstar and myself with a client...
Client: I see you have made some of the buttons Orange.
Fourstar: Yes, it's like a warning, those buttons publish live to the web.
Client: My wife doesn't like orange.
Me: It's an internal page, not an external page, only employees will be able to see it.
Client: My wife doesn't like orange.
I think you'd better don't spend much time on tidying things up, unless some very important things.
Not sure if this has already been brought up here:
ESPN.com (NOT ESPNF1.com): Fans favor F1 star Schumacher
Very interesting that what would probably be a majority-American crowd voted Schumacher through, ahead even of their all-conquering NASCAR boy Jimmie Johnson. Rossi also performed better than expected, but it seems that while he is immensely popular with those who know him, he's not popular enough in the mainstream...
Oh, and that's F1's Michael Schumacher, not NHRA's Tony Schumacher. :D
I suspect many got confused ;)
Who did they confuse for who, though? ;) They also reported that Tony Schumacher did a lot better than expected - they weren't expecting him in the Top 5.
That Schumacher bloke - he's pretty quick ;)
Morning all.
Morning :)
Morning folks. I'm in AUTOSPORT bashing mode today.
Do I tippy-tappy out a blog entry on the state of AUTOSPORT International or, write my letter of complaint to their subscription department about the woeful level of service?
Decisions decisions...
Both?
Guessing I better do the show first.
I may be some time...
Be interested to read both sir!
Bah, I'm having one of those days where everything I'm doing seems to be going wrong - not good when you have an exam to sit
Take a deep breath and pop over to Greggs for a pie ;)
I'm not sure my tidying has gone so well! I'm giving up and going out #sorrynick
please do blog it. i have comments to make (and i've been bashing them all weekend already).
Dr Who bloggy plug: http://toata.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/58-the-regeneration-of-doctor-who/
Morning all.
I had Franck on the stage again yesterday, all on his own this time, and asked him a question about his legion of female fans (and the I Heart Franck site). He blushed and giggled!
awwww.... :)
Stuart I think we need to hear more about this ring tone situation
although i can't see her right now, i'm going to bet christine just dived under her desk :)
Both. Although I quite enjoyed it as an infrequent visitor, I can see how regulars might be disappointed.
morning btw.
i'm not really here
I introduced Allan McNish and he failed to appear, so I was just standing on the little platform like a goon for a few seconds. Then he arrived, explaining that he'd been on the phone. I jokingly said, "You'd better have turned it off," then launched into what I must confess was a bizarre anecdote: at the Motor Sport Business Forum several of the speakers didn't turn their phones off, so the presentations were continuously punctuated by that bleeping noise you get when mobiles are left close to microphones/radios. Chairman Allen was getting quite exasperated, and swore blind it wasn't his phone.
Anyway, I ended up doing a rendition of the noise itself while Mr McNish’s eyes boggled…
Professional as always Mr Codling! You've got to fill the time somehow!
i am so angry the australian open has put roger on in the day and hewitt on at night. My $60 will only be worth it if he loses.
Mind you, your eyes would boggle if you were standing on a stage with someone going "Mnip mnip mnip mnip mnyeeeeeeeeerp"
hahaha :D
ARGH!
*hides*
I think they might. I'd be very impressed.
thought so :D
Awww :p
Although, I must say, I am disappointed by the distinct lack of kidnapping going on. All these people talking to my Franck and he still manages to get away.
:-D
brilliant!
They couldn't get past the ice cube defence he had going
Do all your plans involve some form of kidnapping? ;)
Good point. He had ice cubes and he wasn't afraid to use them.
I have no plans, I am just seeing missed opportunities here. Having said that, it would be useless for me to kidnap Franck, given all the giggling and hiding that would occur.
Just a dry run with more bodies available - next year we can set up a pincer movement.
Or the hawk-eyed Pug PR lady.
Is there video of his solo interview?
not sure the f1r stand was filmed was it?
(except by pat)
Did you manage and subtle blog plugging Stuart?
She was everywhere - Franck and Nic were wandering the floor while Scott, Chris and I were at a simulator and he took great interest in the Superleague car before she pulled him away... we were saying 'don't do it Franck!'
Let's go and get this exam out of the way then. See you all later.
good luck sir.
So, what's been happening this weekend?
How are we all?
Nah there wasn't a camera there like there was at the Autosport Stand.
And that fellow doing the interviewing, for one moment I thought was Dom Joly.
good luck
Decided to give it a miss. But I did plug the BOOKAZINE.
Absolutely not. The availability of evidence would cramp my style.
Stuart, hope you don't mind if I upload it.. ;-)
harsh!
No, just poor eyesight on my part
Why not? All the great catastrophes of our time have to be documented with home movie camera footage - it's the rules!
hehe, you managed to go the whole show without saying "who are you anyway" on stage? :D
No need to when everyone watching was thinking it!
I've just noticed that the BBC are reporting that Fisichella is "set to fill" the second seat at Sauber.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8465404.stm
How does he keep getting these drives?
:)
he was skiing with ferrari last week, how does he get to play for two teams?
:-) I thought you very good actually
If it hadn't have been for Jackie...... ;)
Introducing "Martin and Allan Brundle" got Sunday off to a ropey start...
They've got one rookie so they probably want one experienced driver. I think that means a choice between Fisi and Heidfeld and they've stuck by Nick for years, time to try something different?
fisi has been average for an equal amount of years.
Morning all
He also works for their engine supplier...
Beats me. I have never been convinced by him
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh.
Morning!
im cold. Im going home. I can see how this boring one sided match will end.
Isnt it "summer?"
I thought it was 40 degrees
All the best mate :)
Goooooooooood afternoon
Fisi was terrible in both cars this year, it's like he moved to a better team and hardly improved!
our high today has been 20 and now its 14. Ive been rained on so my clothes are damp. Half the matches i wanted to follow got postponed until tomorrow. But i got to see rafa tonight in bright pink and orange so its not all bad.
:D
Ooh Good Luck!
actually, both of them were on great form on the autosport stage. I loved Brundle gatecrashing McNish and Herbert's interview. Was great.
Not impressed by Autosports 9 minute and x second limit to interviews though on You Tube. Mr Hope Frost asked McNish how he thought Red Bull would do this year and the You Tube ended! booo
The words engine and deal spring to mind.
ah Nick did it
Listening to TWiT. Apparently someone asked Wozniac what the best gadget at the show was and he said the google phone. OOPS. Later in the day he put out a statement that he still has two iphones and won't be changing.
I think he is trying to kill Jobs.
I can't view your calendar. Everything seems to be in Arabic! I can't look at the menus to try and see if I can sort it out as again, they're in Arabic!
It's OK here. You need to move.
Yeah I presume it's Google trying to be helpful! Really not working :P
Nick has complained about the same thing on other sites before.
Have you tried going to google.co.uk and logging in first?
No I'm not even sure I have a google account. It's not urgent, I was just a bit confused. You have no idea how odd it looks!
Dropio a pic!
Are you looking for anything specific from the calendar or are you just playing
Yeah I hate that. Skype does it too *grrr*
I was just looking at it. It's not a big problem :P Probably not worth flying home for....
Although he did beat Massa more often than not when they were together in 2004. Remember those uber-long first stints to get him up the field?
There's probably a Part 2 somewhere - it's just that YT has a 10-minute limit, so AUTOSPORT just follows it...
Hehehe. Does he still have Apple stock?
How many more days will you be there?
I'm flying home on Saturday. I have to work on Sunday....
I looked for part 2s and can't find them
Back to reality, so says the song.
According to wikipedia he is still an employee even though he doesn't work there and still has shares.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woz
Jet lag
the sidepodcast calendar? ahh, yeah it's a bit clever like that.
does it? i thought they removed that years ago?
I'll be fine! It's only 4 hours. My sleeping pattern is beggared anyways :P
I thought there was a 10 minute limute but you could get something like a professional account which let you put up longer vids.
Only for some user types, I think. Not all.
AUTOSPORT in content delivery fail shocker?
i see the squished issue is fixed now, albeit with a tag hack. one step at a time :)
that's rrrrubbish.
Boooooo!
At least you're enjoying your time there. :)
Joe is Posting at an alarming rate... more than an article a minute!
Hows the tidying going?
Will i have a floor again? :P
:D
That is NOT my fault!! (but yes, you can see the floor..... :P)
So there was such a mess that you couldn't see the floor? That must be a LOT of stuff...
ahh right. i thought you meant they switched off the site.
Well it's still very unusual. {Comment #46}
The Companies House web search function refuses to run between midnight and 8am, presumably due to staffing. It's the only other place I've seen that doesn't bother with 24/7 functionality.
To be fair, there really isn't a lot of floor space to cover.... I've had to just unpack my suitcase which looks worryingly like I've moved in :D
a fine post by dank: http://bit.ly/5bHqMq
Morning all.
I had Franck on the stage again yesterday, all on his own this time, and asked him a question about his legion of female fans (and the I Heart Franck site). He blushed and giggled! {Comment #118}
Excellent! Stuart, your cool rating (and Franck's) has just gone up :)
ooh, do we have a cool wall?
You mean he hasn't convinced you to yey?
How is Christine ever going to talk to Franck if he blushes and she hides?
I've just noticed that the BBC are reporting that Fisichella is "set to fill" the second seat at Sauber.
http://news.bb...rmula_one/8465404.stm
How does he keep getting these drives? {Comment #160}
Well, I'm not counting any chickens yet... ...but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was to do with Fisi still being rather quick, having some spectacularly good days in the sun, being good at helping teams develop cars and, in this case, not demanding too much money.
How is Christine ever going to talk to Franck if he blushes and she hides? {Comment #224}
Maybe if they both wore blindfolds...
Spoken like a true Ti-Fisi ;)
What surprised me was that in 2009 at least, he beat his FIF1 team mates by a considerable margin, yet barely improved at Ferrari and was miles behind Kimi and Massa's results...
post from joe re: rankings: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/castrol-launches-motorsport-ranking-scheme/
manages to avoid the mention of autosport even once and doesn't offer any suggestion of what joe makes of it. have commented but it's in moderation.
How does he keep getting these drives?
he was skiing with ferrari last week, how does he get to play for two teams? {Comment #162}
That one is an easier question to answer. Ferrari spotted that the test drive doesn't offer much actual driving and they'd just been through the rigmarole of attempting to substitute Massa. Any substitute will now need to keep racing or else risk doing a Badoer when called up. Sauber consider Fisi to be sufficiently better than de la Rosa to take the (smallish) risk of Fisi being called back to Ferrari. I think Heidfeld just plain priced himself out of the market, if what I've read is true.
It's been approved, no response yet though.
Bit strange that post - I wonder why he held his opinion back? I might not comment until he does...
Spoken like a true Ti-Fisi ;) {Comment #227}
:D
What surprised me was that in 2009 at least, he beat his FIF1 team mates by a considerable margin, yet barely improved at Ferrari and was miles behind Kimi and Massa's results... {Comment #227}
I wasn't expecting the Ferrari stint to be as fraught as it was either. It didn't help that the Ferrari appeared to be somewhat idiosyncratic to drive (it took about 4 races, plus the winter testing, for Massa and Raikkonen to fully acclimatise to the Ferrari and neither of them are particularly slow at learning new cars). It also required very sharp braking, which Raikkonen in particular revels in (and is probably part of the reason he preferred the 2009 Ferrari to the 2008 one), but does not suit Fisi at all. Having two drivers with completely opposite driving styles is always going to result in some sort of problem accommodating both and Kimi was just brilliant in the latter half of 2009.
So the lack of improvement between Force India and Ferrari was more down to the problems Fisi had in getting the Ferrari to work the way he wanted it to work than anything odd at Force India.
Yeah I'd agree with that. Still disappointed though. I gather if he gets a Sauber driver he'll be ok.
Hey guys
Just watching the 2009 F1 Review DVD and there's an option to turn off Ben Edwards' commentary over it, so you just get the raw footage with the engine sounds and team radio. It's awesome! :D
So there was such a mess that you couldn't see the floor? That must be a LOT of stuff... {Comment #217}
My bedroom floor has not been visible for quite some time...
Excellent! Stuart, your cool rating (and Franck's) has just gone up :)
ooh, do we have a cool wall? {Comment #222}
Not a formal one (yet).
commented in Joe's ranking post...
We need to give Christine some Franck Roleplay therapy.
Someone speaks to Christine as if they're Franck, and Christine has to try not to hide/go silent/put down the phone/hand the phone to Mr C whilst running out of the room.
Me too also
I think the whole thing is a plan by Mr C to train Christine's behaviour. When he wants her attention he gives her a Milky Bar and when he wants rid of her he points and shouts FRANCK.
This DVD I bought at Autosport of Group B cars doing tarmac hillclimbs is fantastic as well. It's just 2 hours and 15 minutes of nothing but raw footage and engine sounds, with the only mucis being in the shots which show the cars in parc ferme etc. Absolutely love it :D
music*
*drools*
Currently on some footage from 1996 with a Lancia Delta S4 and a Ford RS200 :D
96?
Yeah it's footage taken and recorded from tarmac hillclimbs in which Group B cars have been entered, from 1989 to 2006.
you only likes it because he dosent ;) but i agrees!
Oh right - cool stuff then!
Indeed! It's all done by these guys.
www.videoconcept.com
Turns out the Group B DVD I have is their bestseller too! No wonder!
it's an interesting thread, because joe isn't saying if he's one of the experts or not. and that highlights another flaw - the lack of transparency means we have no idea who is behind it and if they have any conflicts of interest etc.
more castrol fail.
I would guess he isn't - which is why I commented like I did http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/castrol-launches-motorsport-ranking-scheme/#comment-10072
i soooo had to refrain from: "as predicted by sidepodcast, dank thought ASI was a waste of money"
:)
I hope he is not because I suggested in my comment that the experts should become experts in something ither than racing.
Personally I actually thought this year's show was rather good.
agreed. but again, we're just guessing.
should we make more wild speculation? given the figures, i reckon eddie jordan is a consultant.
love to read a post from you too sir.
He is moderating quickly
Good lord, I hope not.
That can be arranged.
for the fan, i would agree, for me, I would disagree
i was joking.
the point is we have no idea. it could be the tea lady.
i would respectfully suggest that proprietors of feeder series podcasts, (who incidentally got in for free) are a minority interest group.
am interested in the reasons scott liked it though.
oh of course, but this comes back to the whole trade vs public thing, they are trying to do both and it just dosent work.
also true.
The kitchen smells like warm hot cross buns and I am hungry. Life is so unfair.
having said that, i don't think the trade thing worked either.
from your perspective maybe, but you didn't have to pay for any square-footage, nor make any sales to cover your expenses.
late afternoon greggs run?
Eat the hot cross buns then
There is no evidence of hot cross buns except for the smell.
Might have to!
That is beyond cruel.
As per requested by Mr C:
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/2010/01/autosport-international-2010.html
surely some people think it's worth while, otherwise you wouldnt get anyone coming/trading.
i do agree with your points though, and agree with Dank that something needs to be changed otherwise it will die a horrible death/continue to die
Have you been before Mr Scott?
Since '96 or '97, only missed it once and that was last year.
oh wow. am impressed
commented. very good post.
I think what it is is exactly what I explained in my blog post there.
Because you guys all mainly focus on F1, there's only so much on display there relating to it, so when you go there, there's not that much that you're really interested in and therefore can grow tiresome of it. Because I enjoy a wide spectrum of motorsport, such as rallying, sportscars, touring cars etc alongside F1, I can appreciate and enjoy a lot more of what's on display. That's what's kept us going there year on year. Plus, we consider it the start of our motorsport season. :P
Thank you sir :P
i think that really must be the key.
i would definitely agree, i think as a fan you have to really be open to other things to really enjoy it all
an alternate view from mav:
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=2193
have left a comment, still in moderation. the Ferrari at ASI was ANCIENT.
i'd imagine that up to date show cars from italy are hard to come by?
2003?! that's just ridiculous.
oh really? that is quite ancient
yup. saw a picture of it yesterday somewhere here. none of the silly winglets that we saw towards the middle of the decade, but the sidepod was already sculpted. so it's probably from 2003.
in '06 we saw this one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/523730947/in/set-72157600293181236/
and in '07, the stig nicked it:

differnet helmet ;)
#nerdalert
I was told it was 2002
I was also told they had a newer one last year.
Ferrari never let them have one and they actually borrow it from Bridgestone.
I heard it was a 2002 car. and not from Ferrari.
stuart said the very same thing here last year. one sec.
hmmm. can't find it now :(
But I don't want Fisi. :(
I want Klien or Heidfeld.
Afternoon all.
Really...? That's a bit odd. I thought the sidepods looked sculpted.
But even so - that's even older than I thought!
When are they going to put RG in charge of Sauber?
Probably after Timo retires.
When Steven becomes FIA President.
They had a F3000 race in Birmingham?!?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LU2ivWxA1I&feature=related
I told you about my Estonian flatmate, right? She is moving out again #notmyfault
We had a discussion on this before Xmas. They had about 5 of them. Birmingham is the only place in the UK where you can have a race on public roads because they got an act of parliament passed to allow the superprix
Several
Already? You seem to have a lot of flatmates. Wasn't she number 19 or something?
Birmingham, and Dewsbury. Well, maybe it's not allowed here, but it certainly goes on.
Plus support races
something like that. I might move myself at the end of next month (which means up to 3 more new flatmates). Why travel the world? They all come to me :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birmingham_Superprix
It's been reported widelyu across the Internet, what I do not understand is Peter Sauber said it was experienced "new blood" for the team, but Fisi has driven for them before. I think he is better than Pedalo but not as good as either Nick or Christian.
:D
Ferrari are probably "paying" Sauber to take him though - with the proviso he runs straight back in the event they need him for some reason.
He is supposed to have left their skiing event half a day early to go to Hinwill
Marco Apicella was 2nd to Alesi. Now there's a name I haven't heard in ages. I think he's the guy with the shortest-ever F1 career - half a lap at Monza in 1993. And to think he looked so promising here...
"paying" = free engines?
If he left early for Hinwil, it looks like it's odds-on then. Could it mean Pedalo may yet end up at Campos after all?
something like that
He might be taking up and advisory role?
I'm running out of things here to keep my optimism it isn't him.
Was it for Jordan?
Jenson said Pedalo would be doing the first day of testing of the MP4-25 - sounds like he's going nowhere
The F1 "Half Lap" I was referring to
He had a big reputation in F3 and F3000 but never made it in F1
Yup - this was the time EJ was looking for a decent teammate to Rubens. Having gone through Capelli, Boutsen, Apicella, and I think even Naspeti, he finally ended up with Eddie Irvine.
I thought the block at Campos is that they have no money and can't raise any sponsorship in Spain.
Ahhh. So that's it then. If Jenson did say that, it must really be Fisi.
That is what is being reported. Unreliable sources suggest the decision is now "open" whereas two weeks ago it was made - so not sure what to make of that.
Wasn't Naspeti racing for March/Leyton House? I'm sure it was at Belgian GP?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80941
Wikipedia says that Naspetti was indeed at Jordan for a while in 1993. Although he was also at March the year before.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Formula_One_season
Pedalo has some sponsorship money apparently - some connection to Santander or even Santander themselves.
Naspetti's F1 career. 5 March races and 1 Jordan race.
http://www.grandprixstats.com/en/drivers/entries.php?d=491
Hmmm. That's possible due to the McLaren link, but given that Santander already sponsor Bruno Senna, I'm not sure how much more Santander is willing to pay Campos.
I mixed my years up. Have a memory of Murray mentioning that he didn't like the wet, which would match up with Spa 1992.
Santander will be sponsoring everyone at that rate :-P
Modern-day Marlboro, they'd be. ;)
Possibly like Ferrari McLaren might want him driving in another team so they can haul him back in a race-prepared condition should one of their normal drivers be unable to compete.
Bizarre - do they have more money than sense?
FIFI or one of the new teams would be more likely in that case, and that just leaves one Campos seat (possibly) or USF1 (ha ha ha. no)
they build bridges out of lego... so maybe
I guess it depends on what they want to do. It worked for Marlboro just fine...
I must admit I like that advert. I like that Lewis Hamilton is in it but unless you know who he is he is just a guy in the background rather than the whole thing being about him.
I just remembered the name of Pedalo's supposed sponsor - Universia which is connected to Santander
Hello again, exam could have gone a lot better but I think I did enough to pass. Least I got a B for the advanced database assignment I did last month.
Neither sound that attractive!
Universia sponsored Renault last year with the connections to Brazil (Piquet) and Spain (Alonso). With both drivers no longer there this year, am not sure if they're coming back...
Well done on the B and I hope you are right about the exam.
Rumour was they were looking for another team now that the Renault drivers are elsewhere.
Very possible, and I'm thinking likely, scenario.
Campos would be the obvious first choice, but let's see what they find.
Anyway, off to bed for me. Night, everyone.
These Formula 1 stars need to control their hunger urges, it was Schumacher last week it's Button this week
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8466380.stm
Good Night Journeyer, I am off for a short while to exercise the dog, now it is not so hot (temp on our campus was 40C today).
Wasn't the Pedro rumour based around Sauber already having secured Universia as a sponsor?
Leo just got his Apple event invite...
*clears calendar on 27th*
Sounded like that but I have heard so many potential sponsors for Sauber it is difficult to know what to believe.
W0000T!
although if it's anything like the magic mouse apple can keep it.
#worstdesignevah
http://brizzly.com/pic/15A6
Apple cannot, and pretty much never have been able to, design mice. The very first mouse for the Macintosh was great. Since then... The one with the LC475 was pretty good. That's it I think.
i love that he's put the invitation only - invitation, online
love it
i wonder if they make awful mice to force people onto touch?
Maybe... Have you considered that bamboo thing (is that what it's called? Mind has gone blank)
hitting it?
Surely must have considered it - they'll feed it to the panda if it doesn't work out
:D
http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/bamboo_pen_touch.php
So the iSlate is happening
I want it to be an annoucement for a new mouse. Just to be annoying
Hope it is good then, imgine the headlines if it isn't.
"iSlate the product for being rubbish"
ooh we has one of them. currently in the box marked "we needs more off season":
http://sidepodcast.com/2008/05/04/one-for-the-future/
:P :P :P
Sidepodcast was there before Leo. It was in the wrong thread but it was there.

These ones now have touch in them. So they are like having a pen that you can use but also a big touchpad I think.
Surely iSlate slated
awww!
i'm not sure even milkybars can swing buying a new wacom having never used the previous one.
That was before the daily I guess... off topic happening pretty quick there.
true.
good lord! yeah, we needed a daily.
Hello everyone, hope it's all good where you are.
not sure if this works straight out of the box, but if so, how cool is this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAWEDZrTcsA
closed-captions, as figured out by youtube. we just upload a text file (which christine always publishes with every show anyhow) and youtube does some kind of awesome speech to text analysis (or vice-versa) and puts the captions in the correct place!
i'm really good now. mind = blown!
By the closed captions? I'm really impressed by that, clever machines!
mmm. you've been able to do it in the past, but you had to put in all the time codes.
so you tell it:
- 00:31 = "Hello and..."
- 00:35 = "etc..."
now it's able to figure it out all by itself!
F1 related blog pluuuug: http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/taking-real-reality/
What?!!!!
....how?!! Thats amazing!
Ah, very much tedious work.
On a side note, did anyone else notice that you can make the tabs on the top bar in Google Chrome go mini?
i know. i just copied the text from here into a file and uploaded:
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/04/kubica-set-to-stay-at-renault/
That is actually staggering. Youtube has added a lot of bloated features that have been a bit annoying and some alright ones, but this is just awesome.
first thing that has genuinely impressed me. i don't think any other sites can do that, and it's almost worth embedding the youtube player over the traditional one, just for that feature.
did you use this Mr C? http://mashable.com/2010/01/16/youtube-captions-how-to/
have we seen this USF1 pics before?
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/cars/438911/exclusive-usf1-type-1-revealed.html
nope. not seen that before. i just uploaded a text file that contained the blog post text (and literally nothing else).
I don't think we've seen the CAD images before, but that image of them working on the tub is from the video.
and at least this one has a driver! (albeit a CAD one, better than no driver at all!)
That could hold a lot of toast!
Boo! miro doesn't download the captions.
miro can download from youtube?
ah. well at least it doesn't require a lot of work :)
however, that article points out we can now download a timed caption file after youtube has done its magic and then upload that to other sites.
luuuurve it!
e.g. http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/f1minute/videos.rss
Or you can have it search youtube and download every video about Franck for example. But the search thing is a bit slow at picking up new videos.
Although, this does kind of worry me: "Certain features of the design definitely buck the norm, allowing for some very tight packaging, and result in what can only be described as an ‘attractive' car. Rest assured the design will raise some eyebrows at its launch"
Hopefully they didn't, ya know, break the rules or anything.
this is missing. add this feed to miro
i had no idea.
that says to me they don't have an actual car yet. just pretty diagrams of one.
it can search other video sites too like dailymotion... but then only retrieve the link not download the video.
They didn't do bad out of the UK banking problems. Didn't the UK government take everything that was good about B&B and give it to them for nothing? At the expense of the shareholders.
You mean to tell me that you're the expert on all series like these, yet you didn't know this?! :O
And parts. But they should be getting their engines soon.
That's a bit mean!
What 88/89/90 ish ??
we've really got to build the superfreakinfastsearch into the comment box though, because a quick check for "birmingham" and "f3000" brings up plenty of comments on the subject.
the site should be smart enough to do that work for you.
Indeed - we have conversations and then a few days later someone says "I don't know if you mentioned this before..."
That is like my life with Mr C though.
OI!
I saw the comments, I was just replying myself.
I'm not sure any sort of super duper search facility will include the spoken word though...
i'd be shocked if google weren't already working on it :)
There is the Google Mobile App with voice search.
Hello all, hope we are all OK. I resigned from work last week & sorted out my leave with my line manager today. My last day is 31st March. Can't wait to be a lady of leisure for a while :)
Oooh, how exciting!
Um, Good news?
that just uses your voice for input (to enter the term you're searching for).
I think what people are talking about here is having some code that can "listen" to a podcast or audio of some sort, turn it into text, and make it searchable.
Ah I see. I wouldn't put it past Google to do something like that.
Good luck with that
many women have it built in - just requires an argument to be started then every minute detail of what's occurred in the last 30 years is available for immediate recall.
#runsforcover
wow. any reason for the change?
#joinsyou
Definitely good news. Have been fed up for ages & have now decided I'm too old to keep going to do something I really don't enjoy. I'm going to take some time off and then do some volunteering and/or get a part time job. Will probably look for full time work again next year :)
isn't that steven's job?
:D
Hehe. #alsohiding.
As promised, here is my post on Driver Consistency for 'Must Comment Monday'
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/2009-in-review-driver-consistency/
As I said in the post, I plan to do a ranking of all the drivers based on a weighted scoring system – If you have any ideas on what percentages I should use, please leave a comment if you haven't already ;)
Hello. Have noticed some Autosport show reviews in my reader, I'm purposely avoiding reading them until I've written mine, which will happen after I've eating something...
Skim-reading while food is cooking..
I was amazed to find I recognised one of the roads used in the Birmingham Superprix when i was driving to the karting venue... Roundabout next to a mosque, down a dual-carriageway leading to a Halfords. I remember the photos vividly from books and various websites and I had no idea I'd end up driving along it.
There was a Halfords Corner on the street circuit. Maybe it was that section you were driving on. :)
Look forward to reading it.
I've driven the whole circuit - it's not much fun in rush hour.
I think so, unless they moved the Halfords
heheh, nice tweet from Pressdog earlier:
"My 18-year-old daughter doesn't seem to realize that I'm a Very Important Big-Deal Famous Blogger loved by tens of people. Where's she been?"
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/18/f1-debrief-whats-not-to-like/
What a time to arrive! How are we all?
Oooh yay!
Anyone got any pics of the karting up yet?
*not here*
I know there are some VBH fans here... so i thought you'd all appreciate a link to this video :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A3UhG4ceFE
I swear Jenson is more relaxed and funny in interviews than ever before. I know i'm biased but he's such a good representative for the sport.
*cough*mrc*cough*
For the record, as well as Frankage I did also try to get video of VBH in the live show, but it was terrible and I deleted it on the spot.
He was very relaxed and confident in the arena interview. More so than the presenter. In fact if you didn't know who either were... okay scratch that because I don't know who the presenter was. If you didn't know who Jenson was, you'd assume he was the confident TV guy and the other one was the "I just drive, the TV stuff just gets in the way" famous person..
Don't think anyone took any!
i hope he doesn't get struck down by Mclaren PR speak. Even in that interview he comes across as a fan of F1 in general rather than a McLaren driver, tis excellent!
Most of us were too busy driving :-)
I don't remember who had a camera other than Jackie with yours. I left mine in the car because I didn't think I'd get a chance to use it (and I wouldn't have done)
that interview just made me smile. i have no idea why :)
I left mine in the car too. I'd love to see Jackies/your video, but I understand if you don't. It being all over the internet and everything!
hahah, "I don't have to lie any more" about good cars :-)
I did see someone take a picture of me with my helmet on while I was speaking to camera with Jackie. I think he was the same guy who was taking pics with us at Autosport.
Do you mean Kimster?
No, he was a guy with long hair and glasses. He took pictures of my autograph book.
I dont know why, but over those interviews he slowly annoyed me more each time. not a clue why
#sorrylou
oh.. maybe cause you were listening to him say basically the same thing but slightly reinvented time and time again?
nope definitely wasnt that. maybe it's that i dont think he should have won, and that makes me not like him as much, especially since he gloats about it
ahh. fair enough.
*shakes fist* BARROWMAN!!!
I think that was Jolly and he wasn't at the karting
you don't think jenson should be wdc? after the race in brazil?
i think he's a very good driver, but i think that his car was infinately better than any other for the first half of the season (and it should have been given how much was spent on it) and that he shouldnt have won it.
he had the best 'package' but he was not the best driver
i had no idea. i couldn't disagree with you more.
who, out of interest should have?
as did Rubens... but he didn't capitalise on it. #sorrylukeh
im glad he did, dont get me wrong, he deserved something after staying with a rubbish team for so long, but i think there were better drivers in worse cars, and yes thats how the sport works, but for me he wasnt the best driver of the year.
I couldnt tell you who was though
It's true. Jenson was the best driver in the best car.
Of course he should have won it. He had the most points, despite the hash he made of things in qualifying in the second-half of the season. I don't (as I've said already on my blog) think he was the overall driver last year though.
Just listening to Jon's interview with the guy from GT Academy. Very interesting.
oh of course, and rubens is 'good' but not great #sorrylukeh
he had the most wins too didn't he?
thats what i mean!
im rubbish at getting my point across
what bit?
All of it :P
you don't know who should be champion, but listening to jenson celebrate annoys you? i shall chalk this one up to a mighty big "WTF?" and leave it there :)
oh! there was probably another minute on the front of that, but i forgot to push record
:D
how I disagree with that ;) so so much. He;s been in f1 for 18 years this coming year, man!!
so? he's good, dont get me wrong, but he's not the best driver out there by quite a bit
I never said he was?
indeed... if anything the combo should've wrapped it up with races to spare
No, I'm glad he won, he had the best overall package, if he hadnt have won it would be hte biggest wasted opportunity, but i dont think he was the best overall driver out there.
i'd disagree with that. he'll be the only man in the field in bahrain to have beaten schumi in equal (or possibly worse) machinery.
Good that you mentioned TORA as well. You know there's another one called V1 Championship. Basically they have servers on Live For Speed and they pick you out based on not just how quick but now consistent you are in terms of setting lap times. Then if you go forward, you go through psychometric tests and then from what I've seen, get to drive a Formula BMW.
http://www.v1championship.com/
I didnt say you did? But just being there for 18 years dosent make you great
Good evening Sidepodland
ya. i have downloaded it. tis v.good
sorry, massa too.
like i said, he's good, but he's not the best
I've wanted to do it, but I need a decent PC system in order to play it properly.
Who?
nah. just turn the specs down a bit. mines alright and it does it fine generally
oh and playing with a mouse is fun ;)
i think, that if you agree button is better than rubens and rubens can beat schumi in an equal car, that rates button quite highly.
...you don't work for castrol do you?
Couldnt say, but i would say Lewis, Fernando, Jenson and a few others are better
yup it does, but i've never said Jenson's a bad driver? I just said he's not the best.
Rubens is a great driver and I won't think any otherwise. Yes he hasn't has success like Schumacher, Alonso, etc and better drivers out there but you give me a driver on the grid that can set up a car like rubens can. The man has experience beyond belief and he showed once again this year that on his day he is one of the best on the grid. He's not the best at all, certainly not at the end of his career now, but he took Jenson all the way to Brazil before the challenge was over. If he wasn't a great driver he wouldn't be plucked up so quickly for 2010 at the age of 38.
Jenson is better than Jenson? :P
...39. oops. :)
Aha...I deduce Rubens.
He's a solid driver - IMHO Williams have done well to sign him.
:)
No. I was comparing them to rubens
I'd prefer to do it with a wheel personally :P
i would too, but a lack of one is definitely an issue
Ah sorry. I'm only half reading ;)
A RSS popped up on my iPhone. Did I miss a debrief on Sunday?
While we're on a Button theme: had an interesting moment yesterday where the man himself asked me if I wanted his autograph shortly after he did his first interview of the day on the AUTOSPORT stand.
He looked a little bemused when I replied "nah, you're alright," I think he thought I was ultra cool for not wanting his scribble on a bit of paper. Or something.
I heart Dank
not a live show, no.
I was going to offer you my own autograph then, until I realised the ironic nature of the situation.
:D
Ah....thanks. Thought I'd missed out then.
So autograph hunters then: trainspotters in disguise?
I've finally found out why Jules doesn't go to races anymore. :)
oooh, go on?
Oooooh?
given the money to be made on ebay, i'd say smarter than that.
if anyone was gonna find out, it was always gonna be lou :)
Well... Jules only does PA for events. She is employed by Jenson and not Brawn or Mclaren. It was partially down to cost cutting for Brawn and partially down to some kind of rule that limits team personal at races that she did not attend last year (and i assume this year too). However she attends events with Jenson as that's part of her job. So that's why we saw alot more of Nicola Armstrong and a lot less of Jules this year. Brawn were cost cutting and needed one person to do the same job for both drivers. :)
so the cost cutting rule affects drivers as well as teams?
do you think Mclaren will get a PA for him from their employment or just let Brawn follow him about?
*facepalm*
Let Jules... Ross is busy running a team!
Being the hot-blooded male that I am, are there pictures of this Nicola Armstrong on the Interweb so I can compare her to the rather lovely Jules?
I did a quick Google search and came up with a gallery of ladies that looked like they had been hit by the ugly bat several hundred times :-(
I'm assuming Brawn, who were limited in team numbers couldn't afford to have Jules there too.. when Nicola is already around? Plus the fact Jules doesn't need to be there as it's not technically part of her job description as she only does PA for events.
Jules is employed by Jenson so she'll stick with him. Maybe not a GPs but she'll be that at triathalons (i should think) and goodwood, autosport international etc..
Good news then :) I'm sure this was one of your many assumptions you said to me ages ago!
technically i was told by the lovely heczone. who contacted me earlier this evening about our discussions about her photos of Jenson Jules and the bear. :)
yep, :) nice to have confirmation though :)
will people STOP reading the comments when we're talking about them!
:)
So, Rubens...
:)
i'm saying nothing. there's a high probability both nicola and jules are lurking along with everyone else who seems to know everything about what is said in the comments.
*waves to various f1 pa people*
:)
have i ever said how much i like:
- badoer
- piquet (both of them)
- ralf
:D hehe well she originally said something about coldtrackdays forum... but i've never heard of them. So i assumed she meant us? anyway she's a lovely person, with amazing photography, if anyone hasn't checked out her flickr it's a must! :) plus she knows Jules so i'm kinda jealous :)
Jules if you're reading this, I don't usually do blondes, but I can always make an exception.
(briefly side-stepping the fact I'm currently happy in a loving relationship of course...)
Did someone mention Piquet? :)
i still don't get why jules was at silverstone though?
If there was ever a headping moment, now's a hell of a time.
noooooooo. a little bit piquet is a... compliment. right nels?
we could tweet her?
You drop your BFF so easily mr. c!
Absolutely. ;)
@laney_scott
;)
heheheh
If Mr and Mrs C go to Foodwood someone need to keep track of Mr C's waving
I still love you Grosjean (that might be because your a RG though)
Also, I hope they go to Goodwood
*gives up typing*
Who? The missus?
No point. I said to her yesterday how lovely looking Button's PA was.
She thumped me. Hard.
Where is this Foodwood? Do they do Jelly?
I rather would like a racing car shaped cake.
this lady? http://www.flickr.com/photos/heczonephotography/4282561624/in/set-72157623223792408/
EMILY!!!!
HUBBA HUBBA!
i see iheartjules is available...
this is Nicola
I've just noticed that the BBC are reporting that Fisichella is "set to fill" the second seat at Sauber.
But I don't want Fisi. :(
I want Klien or Heidfeld.
Afternoon all. {Comment #297}
I really don't understand why Heidfeld hasn't been signed by someone already. Klien didn't convince me but the evidence at the time was somewhat inconclusive.
because it was his home gp? so there are more PR things? i don't really know..
she is rather awesome at making f1 shaped cakes :)
it might be that they get more passes for a homegp or something. strange though.
I'd just like to mention I'm single, if you're reading this Jules.
I shall have to order one for next year then!
I've never taken so long about starting a blog post as I have this one about Autosport.
Hi all, the snow has finally disappeared. Currently writing my guest post: in what I thought would take one night has turned into one week. Never would I have thought it would come to this...
she's just got married...
#sorrypat
#sorrydank
Start it with Jules ;)
Hmm, not bad. Still prefer Jules though.
(please note, I'm not quite the pervert my last few comments have made me out to be, honest).
:D
hey chap. blogging is hard isn't it?
How is sidepodland? It's been a week...
Mine was sent earlier today.
Sorta forgot to attach it when I sent my first email #iamamuppet
*groan* especially when you know what you want to say...I promise it will be a masterpiece, even if it is finished at the end of 2010...
From the past few comments, it seems to have turned into IwanttobeJules'bitontheSidepodcast...
Evening.
I'm off to bed very soon, but did you guys see this from Racecar Engineering?
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/cars/438911/exclusive-usf1-type-1-revealed.html
:D
...okay. :)
I have just finishing the JB's autobiography. A very good read indeed...
briefly. haven't had chance to read but these tweets from scabs are interesting:
http://twitter.com/ScarbsF1
scarbs, not scabs. sorry craig.
I'll restore balance and say I like Nicola better...
I might just agree with you there.
we'll be wanting a poll next!
Character Cup? :P
ooh, will add. hang on, he's tweeting with @USF1 not @USF1team... they apparently have both?
i bet Jenson is laughing his head off as he watched this convo :) *waves at Jenson*
You are a good man Tom.
Jules for me.
Quite clearly, I look like James May...
So Jenson, who do you like better?
did we ever get to see a pic of that?
Ah, I did tweet one, hold on, shall dig through the archives.
That was embaressing. I had a chair moment in the library....
I caught it with a dab of oppo'
All is well
I go away to check BBC sport, and I come back with posts about polls. I think it's getting too late...
Right, I'm off then. Night all :)
Ssssssshhhhhhhh
adios
Gavin, somehow you just reminded me about MCM. Thanks.
And good night.
night night
No it isn't.
Its the general randomness of this place.

I hope you didn't touch the blinds, I fear for the consequences
If that was me I'd be adjusting those blinds.
congrats
Wellity done sir.
The reference just went straight over my head. Might be because of distinct lack of sleep.
Nope, I was too busy being dragged to the dancefloor by the birthday girl.

I've just noticed that the BBC are reporting that Fisichella is "set to fill" the second seat at Sauber.
It's been reported widelyu across the Internet, what I do not understand is Peter Sauber said it was experienced "new blood" for the team, but Fisi has driven for them before. I think he is better than Pedalo but not as good as either Nick or Christian. {Comment #311}
If I recall correctly, Peter Sauber said he wanted "an experienced man with new knowledge for the team". Maybe it's a translation issue since my knowledge of German is rubbish, but if my translation is correct, then Fisi would fit better than Pedro. Of course, if Rich's translation is correct, then anything other than Pedro or a driver back from sabbatical looks a bit strange.
It's also worth reporting that there's been no official confirmation either way and that it could be a while before we know the exact truth of the matter.
Hasn't it been reported in Blick, where I think they have an inside source or whatever about Sauber. So most likely to be true innit?
Ferrari are probably "paying" Sauber to take him though - with the proviso he runs straight back in the event they need him for some reason.
He is supposed to have left their skiing event half a day early to go to Hinwil
"paying" = free engines?
If he left early for Hinwil, it looks like it's odds-on then. Could it mean Pedalo may yet end up at Campos after all?
{Comment #315}
I don't think free engines (because they'd have been paid for by now, probably for the next two years if I remember Ferrari's preferred modus operandi) so much as Fisi's salary would be entirely covered by Ferrari. It would still be helpful to a Sauber team that must watch every penny.
@Mr C Jules went to Abu Dhabi too btw.
you scare me.
Hasn't it been reported in Blick, where I think they have an inside source or whatever about Sauber. So most likely to be true innit? {Comment #613}
It was reported in Blick - but Blick is written in German. I am therefore not 100% sure about whether the different interpretation Rich and I have on this is down to differing translation or something more substantial than that. Since it makes a substantial difference on what that part of the article meant, I'm preferring to be cautious.
Well done
boo.
charming! ;)
I'd like to point out that I do like Marshals and Marshalling but that im currently bored out my mind trying to write a report about it!
Mr c!
:P
Ferrari are probably "paying" Sauber to take him though - with the proviso he runs straight back in the event they need him for some reason.
He is supposed to have left their skiing event half a day early to go to Hinwill
He might be taking up and advisory role?
I'm running out of things here to keep my optimism it isn't him. {Comment #317}
I don't know if it helps, but confidence and positivity are not the same as a signed, sealed, delivered contract. If the Friday meeting generated progress without producing an actual contract, there's still room for an alternative driver to take the seat from under Fisi's nose. I've been supporting Fisi long enough to be careful about taking stuff for granted!
...in a good way? :)
Today Blick reports that Peter Sauber hasn't decided who the second driver will be. It's between DelaRosa and Fisi. He is throwing a dice for it, they report.
Ferrari is putting pressure on Sauber to pick Fisi, but Sauber is adament that only HE decides.

What's to know? You wear an ill fitting orange boiler suit nicked from Dyno Rod and don't know how to apply sunscreen correctly? Not much more to add is there?
hmmm... at least i don't wave to random f1 drivers :P I know i sound like a creepy stalker.. but this time i actually didn't go looking for the information.. it found me!
Cheers mate.
I do quite hope he isn't throwing a dice over it.
I'd have thought a coin toss would have been simpler.
if you're doing must comment monday, here's another good one for you:
http://lairoftheraven.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/f1-testing-sense/
Jenson said Pedalo would be doing the first day of testing of the MP4-25 - sounds like he's going nowhere {Comment #319}
Unless he's doing a Fisi-esque dovetailing of racing and testing. Not impossible, just a bit unlikely... ...and in F1 lots of unlikely things happen every year.
And I've just realised I've done a series of comments basically trying to convince people that the result I want to happen hasn't happened yet - which feels a bit weird.
very nice :)
digg and stackoverflow have that kind of thing to try and stop duplicates
they are

I thought the block at Campos is that they have no money and can't raise any sponsorship in Spain. {Comment #323}
It is - but if they realise they can't get money from the drivers because they've dithered too long putting their price too high, then Pedro could get in again. Whether this would result in him actually getting to drive said car is another question entirely.
If you guys ever get bored of F1 Monopoly, we could always give Guess Who a go...
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/guesswho-jpg
it's on the list... ooh such a long list.
German magazine MotorSportAktuell reports that Helmut Marko said that Alguesari will be the second STR driver. He has given the confirmation. Just some small things to resolve, but the contract is as good as done.
http://www.motorsport-aktuell.com/formel-1/news/marko-bestaetigt-alguersuari-11723.html
:D
:D
:D
:D
Lukeh, class. :D
That is what is being reported. Unreliable sources suggest the decision is now "open" whereas two weeks ago it was made - so not sure what to make of that. {Comment #325}
Given who was saying it was made and the context of it, I'm going for it was "open" all along and the media simply got convinced that de la Rosa was going to win based on the hints his camp were dropping (Fisi's camp rarely hints in this sort of negotiation, so pretty much any hint from de la Rosa would look stronger in comparison).
:D
Flav's face makes that even more funny, for me.
(am abusing my embedding powers, just because it's brilliant!)

Hurrah! What took him so long and is this going to jinx Jaime into being the next Sebastién Bordais?
Some more STR news.
Mirkko Bortolotti will NOT be the test driver for STR.
He refused to move to Milton Keynes and as a reaction Red Bull kicked him out of their young driver programm.
they've certainly taken their sweet time about it.
do we think he'll last the season. extra testing will certainly be a bonus.
i heard that earlier. is it such a bad place? what were his objections?
He was offered a seat in F2, but needed to move to the UK to train with Ricciardo and Hartley. I don't know why Bortolotti refused, but he did according to Marko.
If he really wanted Red Bull's support he'd live in a box and drive for one hot meal a day. There are 1000s of drivers out there who'd give a kidney to get Red Bull's funding, so perhaps he doesn't deserve to even have a sniff at F1?
:)
my favourite part there is the pig tails on flav
he was linked to ferrari though, maybe he has a better offer?
oooh and I've caught up. Hello everyone :)
MK isn't as bad as people think.
How are the cows doing?
Just fine. I see one set every day.
So you think Ferrari will take another young driver alongside Jules Bianchi?
Although, this does kind of worry me: "Certain features of the design definitely buck the norm, allowing for some very tight packaging, and result in what can only be described as an ‘attractive' car. Rest assured the design will raise some eyebrows at its launch"
Hopefully they didn't, ya know, break the rules or anything. {Comment #400}
Almost as worrying is that could have described the 2002 Toyota... ...because having what appeared to be a 2000 chassis around a 2002 engine definitely bucked the norm, allowed for some very tight packaging (if they'd bothered to use it), rose eyebrows and looked attractive because it lacked the flick-ups that made its rivals' cars so quick...
i am so struggling to keep up today.
it's like everyone blogged all at once.
I'm not allowed to like the MK Dons. Just so you know. Other than that I'm fine with MK.
I hope for his sake he knows what he's doing, though lets be honest, none of us know the real reasons why he was dropped.
He wasn't anything amazing in F2 last season. OK, but too prone to mistakes and a bit of a crash magnet.
It's like somebody came up with a concept that encouraged everyone to blog on a monday... to get comments... ;)
i KNOW!!
Mirkko Bortolotti will NOT be the test driver for STR.
He refused to move to Milton Keynes and as a reaction Red Bull kicked him out of their young driver programm. {Comment #645}
Mirko, that's got to be the stupidest reason to fall off a development program since the (anonymous) driver who allegedly lost a Renault development program place in 2002/2003 due to crashing into a house. If Tonio Liuzzi can stand the land of concrete cows, so can you!
You'll like me, I didn't mention my mini blog post ;)
Reading that I thought of the never raced McLaren MP4-18.
That was sooo tightly packaged that it couldn't be raced.
I am not saying I have kept up with the blogs I just caught up with the comments here... I mean for goodness sake I only got my blog post up at 17:45... That's pretty late for me: http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2010/01/addressing-issue.html
'cept Tonio lived in Hemel Hempstead when he was over here.
you don't have to mention it. it appeared in my feed reader and you blogged today. i have to comment.
how could you know that?
Tonio's awesomeness?
What a moron. When you think what some drivers have gone through to get a shot at F1 it is unbelievable someone would do this. I hope this is the last we ever hear of him
Because I listened whilst on our Red Bull tour we had that time?
i'm not the only scary one around these parts then :P
...
...
...
oh.
I hope we at least hear why :-)
Probably can't get the right kind of pasta
reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mB1OuZz5C4
I hear they have an Apple Retail store there or thereabouts though :p
I was going to ask if di Resta was going to be Force India's reserve driver, where would Tonio be going to.
So, seems like perfect opportunity to go to bed. Night all and lotsa love.
I should go too. night
And you have to wonder why the BBC got the rights to the F1 coverage...
lord knows if this has already been plugged, but have we talked about mark webber test driving hot hatches?
http://givesyouwings.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/mark-webber-tests-hot-hatches/
He is going to be racing.
Good night Kathi and RG
big surprise which car wins huh? :-)
he's no clarkson though
Indeed and good night me (not me, mr c me, but me, I am going to bed, but good night mr c me too, but goodnight everyone, ummm yeah :) )
Mind = blown
Night everyone who is leaving :)
Good night whoever is going
Who's in bed?
a small amount of bias maybe!
No. Who's on first
does he say "(sentence)....in the world."?
'cept Tonio lived in Hemel Hempstead when he was over here. {Comment #668
Ah. Land of the concrete cows it may be, but Hemel Hempstead isn't Milton Keynes. Is there something especially terrifying about Milton Keynes that isn't at Hemel Hempstead?
'cept Tonio lived in Hemel Hempstead when he was over here.
how could you know that? {Comment #670}
I could have sworn it was mentioned in F1 Racing once or twice (Klien and Liuzzi, who lived in the same town, were even asked what the road between it and Red Bull's factory was for a quiz question), but I couldn't find the issues where it was mentioned. I remembered it was somewhere near Red Bull but not particularly glamorous.
When you think what some drivers have gone through to get a shot at F1 it is unbelievable someone would do this. I hope this is the last we ever hear of him {Comment #672}
My guess is that unless we follow obscure series or non-single-seater ones, it will be. People tend to remember stuff like this.
Didn't ITV do a feature on Tonio and Scott Speed in their apartment there? I remember something along those lines.
yeah. Twas linked not long ago in the comments.
Ah, I got it.
So I've only got an hour in to my time at Autosport and have already written 500 words. This could be quite long.
Heading off to sleep, has been a loooong day. Night everyone.
I ended up writing just over 1000 in mine. :P
Think my mauling of it came up with a similar amount.
time for me to sleep, night all! xx
Night Lou
Hello everyone.
In the words of Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On?"
way too much. i've got nothing done today. can see myself imposing a commenting amnesty tomorrow :(
Don't worry, I've been reading Land Use legislation all day today. 54 days to go in the legislative session...
That sounds as much fun as EU environmental legislation.
hello sidepodpeople
Hi Guille
We're getting there. What people don't realize, is America is not one nation in a sense. It really is 50 different nations in many ways. I would argue that the difference between the Northwest, Northeast, California, and the South is greater than the difference between different European countries.
The federal government of the U.S. is doing the same thing as the E.U. where they are trying to centralize more and more at the cost of local control.
Hello!!!
I don't know if everyone saw it, but racecar engineering had a piece about USF1. I wrote a blog post about.
The design looks interesting. The front aero package looks a lot like Force India's with a Toyota-like thin secondary wing. The biggest surprise was where the tailpipe is coming out. It is coming out mid chassis instead tapper towards the end.
they have a car! ;-)
nice to see a new team coming up with (some) radical ideas on the design instead of being totally conservative. it can go right or wrong, but nobody will say they didn't tried... (and people will talk about it in any case ;-) )
At least in digital form. My USF1 fear of not showing up scale is down to about 15%.
Who would thought that Campos would of been the shaky one?
at least they can take a 3D printer and make a 1:1 model to present at Bahrain... ;-)
I think they'll be there, the bad press of not showing up are far more worse at this point than going there and being out of pace for the first races. And I'm not exactly a fan of the US, but what I do recognize to American people is that when they chose to do something they put their life in it.
Don't poke the dragon, and all that.
Don't worry, the ugliness on Joe Saward's blog comment form today didn't help.
Yeah, don't message with China... they own everyone's debts.
I _ALMOST_ commented on that thread. Luckily my head got the better of me.
Sorry, writing two difference things and got them mixed up. I am writing testimony talking points right now.
that should read don't "mess" with China...
Well, in my statement the Dragon was the United States, but yeah, shouldn't poke the Chinese dragon, either :)
You'd be surprised. I may put up an edited version of my assignment up on my site once it's done. It's very interesting, just horid to write
I don't think that's a stupid move necessarily. STR seat with a lack of time and little-career prospects?
I actually wrote as part as a response,
"So please, can we all calm down. I hate to be the Rodney King of the Joe Saward Blog but “Can we all just get along.”"
I think most people would have been like "Who the heck is this 'Rodney King'?"
I feel rather old right now.
Ahh... new day, new feed.
I still remember most of the words to the rap Ice Cube did about the whole saga
And he he hasn't been good for over a decade :)
I think I still have the Sublime album that talks about the riots.
I was a freshman in college when that happened. So you're not the only old one :)
(when the riots happened, that is)
I was eleven. I was coming back from a five day weekend Boy Scout hiking trip when we climbed up Mt. Adams. The new broke on the car radio and I remember the reporter getting cut off as he was being robbed of his reporting equipment.
