It can't possibly be Monday again, can it? It looks like it is. Apparently it is Winnie the Pooh day today, as well, which is good, although I have always preferred Piglet. Autosport International is all over, so we can return to regularly scheduled news, and here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Talking of Autosport International, Franck was spotted on several occasions at the event. This time last year, we were there and I was hiding from him behind a pillar. For 2010, I get to watch all the videos that other people got for me. I've posted two on I Heart Franck here and here, and Pat also got some footage of FKM as well. Yum!
  • We promoted the brand new Sidepodcast Calendar recently, and I wrote a post explaining the ins and outs of it. This is just a quick update to say that the calendar now has it's very own page at sidepodcast.com/calendar. It's super duper easy to remember now, and it will be there forever!
  • Yesterday, we were talking about the concept of testing and how it's changing. In particular, we're starting to think it has less significance. Martin Brundle thinks different though, and Autosport have video on his views of the future of testing. The video is a funny shape though.

That should do it for now. I hope your Monday is going okay, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

Briatore vows never to return to F1 as a team owner

That's... interesting. But not surprising. I wonder if we'll still see him in F1 in some other capacity, though.

Morning, everyone. Nice to be watching tennis over lunch. :D

  • Journeyer18/01/2010 at 06:38

was he ever a team "owner"?

Good question. Come to think of it... he never was. Not at Benetton or at Renault. The closest he came to owning anything was Mecachrome after Renault pulled out of F1 in 1997.

But if we look at Flav's actual quote, he says:

"I will never manage another team in Formula One in my life, this is sure, but I have got my dignity back which is important after 20 years in the sport."

So he's actually referring to being a team manager/principal, not a team owner.

Why is YouTube full of these squashed videos?

  • RubberGoat18/01/2010 at 07:54

    Guys,

    Check out this link: http://speedhunters.com/archive/2010/01/15/event-gt-dubai-24-hours-preparation.aspx

About halfway down there is a pic of a cockpit with an iPhone in it - apparently using a GPS-based timer app to count laptimes!

  • me18/01/2010 at 07:55

Why is YouTube full of these squashed videos?

    it's not youtube's fault. it's autosport.

you can tell because when i un-squash the clips, their own logo becomes stretched. so they have a logo in 4:3 format and they're filming in 16:9. somewhere along the line the wrong setting are being pressed so content is coming out screwy. could be on import, could be on export.

youtube just converts what you give it. if there are loads of squashed videos on the web, it's because there a lot of people out there who don't know what they're doing.

  • me18/01/2010 at 07:56

In the UK, The BBC has adverts, just that they're for BBC shows, right?

  • Alex Andronov18/01/2010 at 08:24

how do they make stuff fit?

BBC make their programs shorter on purpose.

Hence, for example the behind the scenes stuff at the end of Life. They don't broadcast that bit in places with ads

BBC Worldwide commissions I think 30% of the TV shows we watch? Something like that.

Basically the BBC Budget is Licence Fee + Worldwide profits. But Worldwide gets to control the shows that it creates. They pay for lots of Children's shows with toys in them for that very reason.

  • Journeyer18/01/2010 at 09:10

Not sure if this has already been brought up here:

ESPN.com (NOT ESPNF1.com): Fans favor F1 star Schumacher

Very interesting that what would probably be a majority-American crowd voted Schumacher through, ahead even of their all-conquering NASCAR boy Jimmie Johnson. Rossi also performed better than expected, but it seems that while he is immensely popular with those who know him, he's not popular enough in the mainstream...

  • Journeyer18/01/2010 at 09:10

please do blog it. i have comments to make (and i've been bashing them all weekend already).

    Morning all.

I had Franck on the stage again yesterday, all on his own this time, and asked him a question about his legion of female fans (and the I Heart Franck site). He blushed and giggled!

Both. Although I quite enjoyed it as an infrequent visitor, I can see how regulars might be disappointed.

    morning btw.

    i'm not really here

  • Stuart C18/01/2010 at 11:06

Stuart I think we need to hear more about this ring tone situation

I introduced Allan McNish and he failed to appear, so I was just standing on the little platform like a goon for a few seconds. Then he arrived, explaining that he'd been on the phone. I jokingly said, "You'd better have turned it off," then launched into what I must confess was a bizarre anecdote: at the Motor Sport Business Forum several of the speakers didn't turn their phones off, so the presentations were continuously punctuated by that bleeping noise you get when mobiles are left close to microphones/radios. Chairman Allen was getting quite exasperated, and swore blind it wasn't his phone.

Anyway, I ended up doing a rendition of the noise itself while Mr McNish’s eyes boggled…

  • Alex Andronov18/01/2010 at 11:08

I have no plans, I am just seeing missed opportunities here. Having said that, it would be useless for me to kidnap Franck, given all the giggling and hiding that would occur.

They've got one rookie so they probably want one experienced driver. I think that means a choice between Fisi and Heidfeld and they've stuck by Nick for years, time to try something different?

Well, I'm not counting any chickens yet... ...but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was to do with Fisi still being rather quick, having some spectacularly good days in the sun, being good at helping teams develop cars and, in this case, not demanding too much money.

  • RubberGoat18/01/2010 at 14:14

Well, I'm not counting any chickens yet... ...but if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was to do with Fisi still being rather quick, having some spectacularly good days in the sun, being good at helping teams develop cars and, in this case, not demanding too much money.

    Spoken like a true Ti-Fisi ;)

What surprised me was that in 2009 at least, he beat his FIF1 team mates by a considerable margin, yet barely improved at Ferrari and was miles behind Kimi and Massa's results...

How does he keep getting these drives?

    he was skiing with ferrari last week, how does he get to play for two teams? {Comment #162}

That one is an easier question to answer. Ferrari spotted that the test drive doesn't offer much actual driving and they'd just been through the rigmarole of attempting to substitute Massa. Any substitute will now need to keep racing or else risk doing a Badoer when called up. Sauber consider Fisi to be sufficiently better than de la Rosa to take the (smallish) risk of Fisi being called back to Ferrari. I think Heidfeld just plain priced himself out of the market, if what I've read is true.

I wasn't expecting the Ferrari stint to be as fraught as it was either. It didn't help that the Ferrari appeared to be somewhat idiosyncratic to drive (it took about 4 races, plus the winter testing, for Massa and Raikkonen to fully acclimatise to the Ferrari and neither of them are particularly slow at learning new cars). It also required very sharp braking, which Raikkonen in particular revels in (and is probably part of the reason he preferred the 2009 Ferrari to the 2008 one), but does not suit Fisi at all. Having two drivers with completely opposite driving styles is always going to result in some sort of problem accommodating both and Kimi was just brilliant in the latter half of 2009.

So the lack of improvement between Force India and Ferrari was more down to the problems Fisi had in getting the Ferrari to work the way he wanted it to work than anything odd at Force India.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Still disappointed though. I gather if he gets a Sauber driver he'll be ok.

Just watching the 2009 F1 Review DVD and there's an option to turn off Ben Edwards' commentary over it, so you just get the raw footage with the engine sounds and team radio. It's awesome! :D

We need to give Christine some Franck Roleplay therapy.

Someone speaks to Christine as if they're Franck, and Christine has to try not to hide/go silent/put down the phone/hand the phone to Mr C whilst running out of the room.

I think the whole thing is a plan by Mr C to train Christine's behaviour. When he wants her attention he gives her a Milky Bar and when he wants rid of her he points and shouts FRANCK.

I think what it is is exactly what I explained in my blog post there.

Because you guys all mainly focus on F1, there's only so much on display there relating to it, so when you go there, there's not that much that you're really interested in and therefore can grow tiresome of it. Because I enjoy a wide spectrum of motorsport, such as rallying, sportscars, touring cars etc alongside F1, I can appreciate and enjoy a lot more of what's on display. That's what's kept us going there year on year. Plus, we consider it the start of our motorsport season. :P

If he left early for Hinwil, it looks like it's odds-on then. Could it mean Pedalo may yet end up at Campos after all?

I thought the block at Campos is that they have no money and can't raise any sponsorship in Spain.

  • Journeyer18/01/2010 at 17:29

Jenson said Pedalo would be doing the first day of testing of the MP4-25 - sounds like he's going nowhere

Ahhh. So that's it then. If Jenson did say that, it must really be Fisi.

  • Rich18/01/2010 at 17:29

Ferrari are probably "paying" Sauber to take him though - with the proviso he runs straight back in the event they need him for some reason.

He is supposed to have left their skiing event half a day early to go to Hinwill

That is what is being reported. Unreliable sources suggest the decision is now "open" whereas two weeks ago it was made - so not sure what to make of that.

  • Rich18/01/2010 at 17:30

Wasn't Naspeti racing for March/Leyton House? I'm sure it was at Belgian GP?

Wikipedia says that Naspetti was indeed at Jordan for a while in 1993. Although he was also at March the year before.

Pedalo has some sponsorship money apparently - some connection to Santander or even Santander themselves.

Naspetti's F1 career. 5 March races and 1 Jordan race.

Hmmm. That's possible due to the McLaren link, but given that Santander already sponsor Bruno Senna, I'm not sure how much more Santander is willing to pay Campos.

Wikipedia says that Naspetti was indeed at Jordan for a while in 1993. Although he was also at March the year before.

I mixed my years up. Have a memory of Murray mentioning that he didn't like the wet, which would match up with Spa 1992.

Possibly like Ferrari McLaren might want him driving in another team so they can haul him back in a race-prepared condition should one of their normal drivers be unable to compete.

Santander will be sponsoring everyone at that rate :-P

Possibly like Ferrari McLaren might want him driving in another team so they can haul him back in a race-prepared condition should one of their normal drivers be unable to compete.

FIFI or one of the new teams would be more likely in that case, and that just leaves one Campos seat (possibly) or USF1 (ha ha ha. no)

I must admit I like that advert. I like that Lewis Hamilton is in it but unless you know who he is he is just a guy in the background rather than the whole thing being about him.

Universia sponsored Renault last year with the connections to Brazil (Piquet) and Spain (Alonso). With both drivers no longer there this year, am not sure if they're coming back...

Very possible, and I'm thinking likely, scenario.

Anyway, off to bed for me. Night, everyone.

Apple cannot, and pretty much never have been able to, design mice. The very first mouse for the Macintosh was great. Since then... The one with the LC475 was pretty good. That's it I think.

mmm. you've been able to do it in the past, but you had to put in all the time codes.

    so you tell it:

    - 00:31 = "Hello and..."

Hello all, hope we are all OK. I resigned from work last week & sorted out my leave with my line manager today. My last day is 31st March. Can't wait to be a lady of leisure for a while :)

wow. any reason for the change?

    Oooh, how exciting!

    Um, Good news?

Definitely good news. Have been fed up for ages & have now decided I'm too old to keep going to do something I really don't enjoy. I'm going to take some time off and then do some volunteering and/or get a part time job. Will probably look for full time work again next year :)

As promised, here is my post on Driver Consistency for 'Must Comment Monday'

    http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/2009-in-review-driver-consistency/

As I said in the post, I plan to do a ranking of all the drivers based on a weighted scoring system – If you have any ideas on what percentages I should use, please leave a comment if you haven't already ;)

Hello. Have noticed some Autosport show reviews in my reader, I'm purposely avoiding reading them until I've written mine, which will happen after I've eating something...

  • Pat W18/01/2010 at 19:39

    Skim-reading while food is cooking..

I was amazed to find I recognised one of the roads used in the Birmingham Superprix when i was driving to the karting venue... Roundabout next to a mosque, down a dual-carriageway leading to a Halfords. I remember the photos vividly from books and various websites and I had no idea I'd end up driving along it.

There was a Halfords Corner on the street circuit. Maybe it was that section you were driving on. :)

For the record, as well as Frankage I did also try to get video of VBH in the live show, but it was terrible and I deleted it on the spot.

I swear Jenson is more relaxed and funny in interviews than ever before. I know i'm biased but he's such a good representative for the sport.

He was very relaxed and confident in the arena interview. More so than the presenter. In fact if you didn't know who either were... okay scratch that because I don't know who the presenter was. If you didn't know who Jenson was, you'd assume he was the confident TV guy and the other one was the "I just drive, the TV stuff just gets in the way" famous person..

i hope he doesn't get struck down by Mclaren PR speak. Even in that interview he comes across as a fan of F1 in general rather than a McLaren driver, tis excellent!

  • Jon Waldock18/01/2010 at 21:13

you don't think jenson should be wdc? after the race in brazil?

i think he's a very good driver, but i think that his car was infinately better than any other for the first half of the season (and it should have been given how much was spent on it) and that he shouldnt have won it.

he had the best 'package' but he was not the best driver

  • me18/01/2010 at 21:14

im glad he did, dont get me wrong, he deserved something after staying with a rubbish team for so long, but i think there were better drivers in worse cars, and yes thats how the sport works, but for me he wasnt the best driver of the year.

I couldnt tell you who was though

  • Lukeh18/01/2010 at 21:16

as did Rubens... but he didn't capitalise on it. #sorrylukeh

It's true. Jenson was the best driver in the best car.

  • dank18/01/2010 at 21:16

who, out of interest should have?

Of course he should have won it. He had the most points, despite the hash he made of things in qualifying in the second-half of the season. I don't (as I've said already on my blog) think he was the overall driver last year though.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/01/2010 at 21:16

Just listening to Jon's interview with the guy from GT Academy. Very interesting.

  • Jon Waldock18/01/2010 at 21:16

  • Scott Woodwiss18/01/2010 at 21:20

Good that you mentioned TORA as well. You know there's another one called V1 Championship. Basically they have servers on Live For Speed and they pick you out based on not just how quick but now consistent you are in terms of setting lap times. Then if you go forward, you go through psychometric tests and then from what I've seen, get to drive a Formula BMW.

i think, that if you agree button is better than rubens and rubens can beat schumi in an equal car, that rates button quite highly.

...you don't work for castrol do you?

  • Jon Waldock18/01/2010 at 21:23

    Who?

Couldnt say, but i would say Lewis, Fernando, Jenson and a few others are better

i think, that if you agree button is better than rubens and rubens can beat schumi in an equal car, that rates button quite highly.

yup it does, but i've never said Jenson's a bad driver? I just said he's not the best.

  • Lukeh18/01/2010 at 21:23

I didnt say you did? But just being there for 18 years dosent make you great

Rubens is a great driver and I won't think any otherwise. Yes he hasn't has success like Schumacher, Alonso, etc and better drivers out there but you give me a driver on the grid that can set up a car like rubens can. The man has experience beyond belief and he showed once again this year that on his day he is one of the best on the grid. He's not the best at all, certainly not at the end of his career now, but he took Jenson all the way to Brazil before the challenge was over. If he wasn't a great driver he wouldn't be plucked up so quickly for 2010 at the age of 38.

  • James18/01/2010 at 21:24

Couldnt say, but i would say Lewis, Fernando, Jenson and a few others are better

  • Adie18/01/2010 at 21:24

    Aha...I deduce Rubens.

He's a solid driver - IMHO Williams have done well to sign him.

    :)

  • Jon Waldock18/01/2010 at 21:24

While we're on a Button theme: had an interesting moment yesterday where the man himself asked me if I wanted his autograph shortly after he did his first interview of the day on the AUTOSPORT stand.

He looked a little bemused when I replied "nah, you're alright," I think he thought I was ultra cool for not wanting his scribble on a bit of paper. Or something.

given the money to be made on ebay, i'd say smarter than that.

if anyone was gonna find out, it was always gonna be lou :)

  • lou18/01/2010 at 21:32

    oooh, go on?

Well... Jules only does PA for events. She is employed by Jenson and not Brawn or Mclaren. It was partially down to cost cutting for Brawn and partially down to some kind of rule that limits team personal at races that she did not attend last year (and i assume this year too). However she attends events with Jenson as that's part of her job. So that's why we saw alot more of Nicola Armstrong and a lot less of Jules this year. Brawn were cost cutting and needed one person to do the same job for both drivers. :)

  • me18/01/2010 at 21:33

So that's why we saw alot more of Nicola Armstrong and a lot less of Jules this year. Brawn were cost cutting and needed one person to do the same job for both drivers. :)

so the cost cutting rule affects drivers as well as teams?

do you think Mclaren will get a PA for him from their employment or just let Brawn follow him about?

  • Lukeh18/01/2010 at 21:34

do you think Mclaren will get a PA for him from their employment or just let Brawn follow him about?

    *facepalm*

Let Jules... Ross is busy running a team!

  • dank18/01/2010 at 21:35

Being the hot-blooded male that I am, are there pictures of this Nicola Armstrong on the Interweb so I can compare her to the rather lovely Jules?

I did a quick Google search and came up with a gallery of ladies that looked like they had been hit by the ugly bat several hundred times :-(

  • lou18/01/2010 at 21:35

so the cost cutting rule affects drivers as well as teams?

I'm assuming Brawn, who were limited in team numbers couldn't afford to have Jules there too.. when Nicola is already around? Plus the fact Jules doesn't need to be there as it's not technically part of her job description as she only does PA for events.

  • lou18/01/2010 at 21:36

do you think Mclaren will get a PA for him from their employment or just let Brawn follow him about?

    *facepalm*

Jules is employed by Jenson so she'll stick with him. Maybe not a GPs but she'll be that at triathalons (i should think) and goodwood, autosport international etc..

I've just noticed that the BBC are reporting that Fisichella is "set to fill" the second seat at Sauber.

    It's been reported widelyu across the Internet, what I do not understand is Peter Sauber said it was experienced "new blood" for the team, but Fisi has driven for them before. I think he is better than Pedalo but not as good as either Nick or Christian. {Comment #311}

If I recall correctly, Peter Sauber said he wanted "an experienced man with new knowledge for the team". Maybe it's a translation issue since my knowledge of German is rubbish, but if my translation is correct, then Fisi would fit better than Pedro. Of course, if Rich's translation is correct, then anything other than Pedro or a driver back from sabbatical looks a bit strange.

It's also worth reporting that there's been no official confirmation either way and that it could be a while before we know the exact truth of the matter.

  • RG18/01/2010 at 22:12

Of course, if Rich's translation is correct, then anything other than Pedro or a driver back from sabbatical looks a bit strange.

Hasn't it been reported in Blick, where I think they have an inside source or whatever about Sauber. So most likely to be true innit?

  • Alianora La Canta18/01/2010 at 22:14

Ferrari are probably "paying" Sauber to take him though - with the proviso he runs straight back in the event they need him for some reason.

He is supposed to have left their skiing event half a day early to go to Hinwil

    "paying" = free engines?

If he left early for Hinwil, it looks like it's odds-on then. Could it mean Pedalo may yet end up at Campos after all?

    {Comment #315}

I don't think free engines (because they'd have been paid for by now, probably for the next two years if I remember Ferrari's preferred modus operandi) so much as Fisi's salary would be entirely covered by Ferrari. It would still be helpful to a Sauber team that must watch every penny.

It was reported in Blick - but Blick is written in German. I am therefore not 100% sure about whether the different interpretation Rich and I have on this is down to differing translation or something more substantial than that. Since it makes a substantial difference on what that part of the article meant, I'm preferring to be cautious.

He might be taking up and advisory role?

    I'm running out of things here to keep my optimism it isn't him. {Comment #317}

I don't know if it helps, but confidence and positivity are not the same as a signed, sealed, delivered contract. If the Friday meeting generated progress without producing an actual contract, there's still room for an alternative driver to take the seat from under Fisi's nose. I've been supporting Fisi long enough to be careful about taking stuff for granted!

Today Blick reports that Peter Sauber hasn't decided who the second driver will be. It's between DelaRosa and Fisi. He is throwing a dice for it, they report.

Ferrari is putting pressure on Sauber to pick Fisi, but Sauber is adament that only HE decides.

    http://lairoftheraven.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/f1-testing-sense/

  • Alianora La Canta18/01/2010 at 22:23

    Jenson said Pedalo would be doing the first day of testing of the MP4-25 - sounds like he's going nowhere {Comment #319}

Unless he's doing a Fisi-esque dovetailing of racing and testing. Not impossible, just a bit unlikely... ...and in F1 lots of unlikely things happen every year.

And I've just realised I've done a series of comments basically trying to convince people that the result I want to happen hasn't happened yet - which feels a bit weird.

If he left early for Hinwil, it looks like it's odds-on then. Could it mean Pedalo may yet end up at Campos after all?

    I thought the block at Campos is that they have no money and can't raise any sponsorship in Spain. {Comment #323}

It is - but if they realise they can't get money from the drivers because they've dithered too long putting their price too high, then Pedro could get in again. Whether this would result in him actually getting to drive said car is another question entirely.

    That is what is being reported. Unreliable sources suggest the decision is now "open" whereas two weeks ago it was made - so not sure what to make of that. {Comment #325}

Given who was saying it was made and the context of it, I'm going for it was "open" all along and the media simply got convinced that de la Rosa was going to win based on the hints his camp were dropping (Fisi's camp rarely hints in this sort of negotiation, so pretty much any hint from de la Rosa would look stronger in comparison).

Although, this does kind of worry me: "Certain features of the design definitely buck the norm, allowing for some very tight packaging, and result in what can only be described as an ‘attractive' car. Rest assured the design will raise some eyebrows at its launch"

    Hopefully they didn't, ya know, break the rules or anything. {Comment #400}

Almost as worrying is that could have described the 2002 Toyota... ...because having what appeared to be a 2000 chassis around a 2002 engine definitely bucked the norm, allowed for some very tight packaging (if they'd bothered to use it), rose eyebrows and looked attractive because it lacked the flick-ups that made its rivals' cars so quick...

We're getting there. What people don't realize, is America is not one nation in a sense. It really is 50 different nations in many ways. I would argue that the difference between the Northwest, Northeast, California, and the South is greater than the difference between different European countries.

The federal government of the U.S. is doing the same thing as the E.U. where they are trying to centralize more and more at the cost of local control.

    Hello!!!

  • Dan Brunell18/01/2010 at 23:56

I don't know if everyone saw it, but racecar engineering had a piece about USF1. I wrote a blog post about.

The design looks interesting. The front aero package looks a lot like Force India's with a Toyota-like thin secondary wing. The biggest surprise was where the tailpipe is coming out. It is coming out mid chassis instead tapper towards the end.

I think they'll be there, the bad press of not showing up are far more worse at this point than going there and being out of pace for the first races. I still remember most of the words to the rap Ice Cube did about the whole saga

And he he hasn't been good for over a decade :)

I think I still have the Sublime album that talks about the riots.

I was a freshman in college when that happened. So you're not the only old one :)
