Thankfully there were no announcements from Autosport International yesterday that made us scratch our heads. I mentioned in the comments that in prepping for the offline podcast this week, Mr C couldn't stop swearing when it came to talking about the rankings. Stay tuned for whether he manages to tone it down in the podcast or not! Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • Pat has done the sensible thing and moved his website over from Blogger to Wordpress, and with a new title as well: I Watch Too Much Racing. Make sure you bookmark his new home on the web. Likewise, my own personal blog has made the switch back to hosted Wordpress, but it shouldn't affect your rss feeds, if you subscribe. Yay for Wordpress! (You don't hear that often round these parts so make the most of it!)
  • It looks like Steven's wish could soon be granted and Paul di Resta will make the step up to Formula 1. At the moment, though, he's looking like filling the situation vacant as Force India's reserve driver, which doesn't really get a lot of miles under one's belt. Still, getting into the paddock is the first step, and di Resta is confident that's about to happen.
  • A new blog has been brought to our attention in the best way possible - Ken asked if he could use one of our Flickr pictures as his header. You certainly can, Ken. He also has an interesting idea to compare the qualifying results rather than races - well, qualifying is the best part of the weekend, so I can't blame him.

That should do it for now, hope your weekend is going smoothly, let us know either way and I will see you in the comments.

Am thinking a FIFA style rankings system might be fairer. Say choosing the 5/6/7/8/9 best results of the season which applies to it.

Quite frankly, I've been looking at it and it needs refining quite a bit.

That's what Mr C christened the horrendous audio setup I needed to make this radio station work. The whole thing will happen with only 1 microphone lead and one headphone lead. Everything else is happening "in the computer".

I think I might have to pop into Basel when I am in Switzerland just so I can say I've been to the birthplace of the greatest of all time.

You can see three countries there. Switzerland, France and Germany all meet there. Basle airport arrivals has one door that takes tou into Switzerland and one that takes you to France.

apparently it's an hours drive from my friends house in Lucerne. I reckon I can talk her into it, she loves Rog. She liked my hat. I think Rog and I had a moment where we bonded over our same hat. There may have been 400 other people wearing the same one, but not in my section of the stand where he happened to be looking!

    Hi Scott.

    Did you get back OK?

  • Amy17/01/2010 at 13:03

That is a cool hat ;)

I felt guilty every time I saw someone in a red one because they cost about three times as much and the proceeds go to charity whereas my profits went to Nike. I also don't suit red.

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 13:04

So my latest test allowed me to either hear it in my headphones or for the live broadcasting thing to hear it. That would be an "interesting" limitation!

Looks like McNish is hogging the AUTOSPORT stage. Another ten minutes of him discussing his 2010 program etc No mention of Monsieur Montagny this time.

Yeah we did eventually. The back of my neck is sore from the karting yesterday, and I have two small bruises on my inner knees as well. But they're insignificant compared to what I managed to achieve last night. I made the final of the karting and it doesn't matter if I came last in it, I still got there. :D

  • Amy17/01/2010 at 13:05

thats not proper red though. It's rocket red! Also known as bright orange ;)

Lucerne to Basle is a nice easy drive. If you fly into the airport though make sure you go out through the correct door. If you set one foot through the France door they insist on you going through the airport and out to the proper border crossing which is a pain and can take a while if it is busy.

That sounds like it could cause problems. You could plug the headphones into another computer and hear the live show so you get yourself on a delay.

The track is like an ice rink. There is no grip and it is bumpy as can be so I doubt it.

And to top it off, I edged my dad out to the final by one point - 30 points to his 29. :D

    Heat results for me:

1st heat: Started on pole, finished 2nd

    2nd heat: Started 6th, finished 3rd

    3rd heat: Started 3rd, finished 2nd

    4th heat: Started 3rd, finished 2nd

5th heat: started 6th, finished 6th (race was stopped halfway through)

The iRacing people are going on a lot about people using Sim Racing as a base for the real thing... do you think it helped you?

To some extent. I just went out there and drove the best I could. I guess the fact that I use a wheel when racing on the 360 now might have been an aid. I think personally it has helped in terms of things like car control.

    Bet that made you popular

Hehehe, he was just proud of me. :)

    Hmm.

They held a competition for the best drivers in the virtual Jetta TDI Cup and trained them for the real series (the winner of the training challeneges got a real drive).

The instructor said that they all had a good base to start from by doing Sim Racing...

    Question about Karting...

Do the professional 1-speed karts slide around a lot or is that only shifter karts?

  • Tom G17/01/2010 at 13:22

  • Scott Woodwiss17/01/2010 at 13:25

Do the professional 1-speed karts slide around a lot or is that only shifter karts?

On a track like the one at Teamworks, they can do, but if you know how to control it properly then you can get around it most of the time. The finish straight was very bumpy though.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 13:25

The instructor said that they all had a good base to start from by doing Sim Racing...

If it had been cars rather than karts I would say there is a big benefit but karts behave completely differently and the circuit is very unusal. A lot of the things you do in cars just don't work in a kart. Because there is no differential in the kart and a solid rear axle it will understeer unless you slide the tail.

The game teaches basics like finding braking points etc but not the technique for driving a kart on a surface like bumpy ice.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 13:26

They have to slide to make them turn. See my previous comment

Fair enough. I had a kart simulator for rFactor but it didn't seem very realistic, surprisingly. The thing just didn't slide around!

  • Scott Woodwiss17/01/2010 at 13:29

Speaking of iRacing, they did have a small simulator set up with iRacing on it on one stand. When I went past it looked and sounded like someone was having a go with the Corvette C6.R at Daytona or some other oval.

From what I have seen the way to drive a kart is to turn in on the brakes and aim for a very early apex then plant the throttle to get the yaw change. Needless to say this is next to impossible in hire karts so you need to find a happy medium between that and car technique.

  • RubberGoat17/01/2010 at 13:31

That's well above my level at the moment - I'm still having fun with the entry level stuff as I am waiting until the start of Feb (when I get paid) to buy the Skip Barber car and circuits needed (which costs a fair bit)!

I have got to the point where I playing iRacing quite seriously, flirting with rFactor for offline racing (as it's useless trying to get online) for more powerful series and using Richard Burns Rally to hone my concentration and car control skills...

Oh yes, and I did speak to Franck yesterday when getting his autograph. He does still remember who Christine is, and he has told me when I asked him that he is no longer in the frame for the 2nd Renault seat, as the opportunity has gone and it's been given to someone else.

Still, I'd better not say anything about when we were queueing up for the Mobil 1 simulator that he was around there and looking at the Superleague Formula stand and admiring the car a bit...

The problem is he has a group of fans like Schumacher has who believe he is 100% right and everyone else on the planet is biased against him. 2007 will be discussed for the next 50 years. It is never going to go away any more than Senna ramming Prost.

Regarding the show as a whole, me and dad both thought it was one of the best shows we'd been to since we started going. I know I certainly enjoyed it. I got to see the Audi Quattro S1 up close on the 60 years of Autosport stand. What an amazing car that is. Also saw the MG Metro 6R4, 205 T16 and also a Lancia 037 on the 30 Years of WRC stand. Plus seeing the Sport Quattro driven by Stig Blomqvist in the Live Action Arena was brilliant too. :P

In terms of merchandise, dad got me a 2010 McLaren shirt as a belated Xmas present (the same kind of shirt Jenson's wearing in his first press shot in McLaren gear) and I bought myself a black Rubens Brawn shirt, the 2009 F1 review DVD and a DVD with over 2 hours of Group B rally cars taking part in tarmac hillclimbs from 1989 to 2006.

Also stopped by the Classic Team Lotus stand 3 times, once just after we got into the show, then again to chat to Clive and then again so he could meet my dad and have a chat as well.

My opinion - great show, hopefully 2011 will be great too.

I hear they have good mustard there ;)

  • RubberGoat17/01/2010 at 14:01

    Dijon?

    Nogaro?

Doesn't it have to be an F1 class in safety or the class below?

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 14:02

Where else could they go in France?

Le Mans Bugatti or any of these

Bugatti would be too twisty I reckon.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 14:03

Brands isn't, Assen isn't. It will have to be approved for International A races.

  • James17/01/2010 at 14:04

Where else could they go in France?

As long as it isn't Magny-Cours I'm not too bothered ;)

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 14:04

Bugatti would be too twisty I reckon.

They used to race F3000 there. I saw McNish race there. Well race is overstating it because his car was garbage.

The drivers were not impressed. Neither were Sierra, because when they made GPL they used Rouen-Les-Essarts instead :D

Rouen is a proper classic track where Bugatti is a non-Tilke Tilkedrone.

Exactly. I think Bugatti is great for MotoGP though.

I think a lot of people are going anyway, so be my guest!

OK, here's what me and Chris were thinking:

Whilst on the Mobil 1 simulator stand at Autosport yesterday, we picked up a couple of leaflets for the company who runs the simulator, called Pure Tech Racing. Now, on it it states that they will have a centre opening in April which will have 10 of these simulators up and running and available for arrive and drive session, organised events and competitions, group bookings, etc. It will be based near Gatwick Airport on the outskirts of London.

Chris pointed out to me that April will be the anniversary of the first Sidepodmeetup in London last year, and that if we're going to do it again, we need a better place to do it than the Science Museum.

I think you can see where this is going ;) Here's the website, there's not much on it at the moment.

    http://www.puretechracing.com/

  • Chris17/01/2010 at 16:11

OK, here's what me and Chris were thinking:

Lol, I forgot about that! I was thinking Goodwood!

Still think it's a great idea though...

I will be in London for 6-8 April and I would like to meet some Sidepodpeeps again. Whether it be here or just at the pub, I'm not fussed. I am in Nottingham the weekend before if some people want to meet up round there...

Ben Owens. Joined in via the circuit the day before the race.

The best of the people who booked through me was Antony Weeks, who came 3rd and found out about the event via Twitter.

Scott Woodwiss, who came 8th, was the best of the Sidepodcast contingent.

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 16:30

    Aww, boo, was hoping it we woulda done a bit better. Was it mixed with another group like? {Comment #35}

Firstly, I frequent quite a few places on the internet. There were attendees from Sidepodcast, GP Wizard, Twitter and some independent websites. Also, I managed to convince my brother to turn up and kart. Finally, there were eight people who attended via Teamworks' direct sign-up feature (all within the last 48 hours before the race and none of whom told me prior to coming). As a result, a lot of different groups were there.

Quite a lot of people went to Birmingham yesterday, doing the Autosport International 2010 show, the 2nd F1 Bloggers and Friends Karting Competition or both. Hence why things are slightly subdued today.

  • Edgar17/01/2010 at 16:33

    i see

  • Scott Woodwiss17/01/2010 at 16:36

How bad is the muffled sound? I mean is it still possible to hear what I am saying?

take five and listen back to the stream. it's quite muddy.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:21

take five and listen back to the stream. it's quite muddy.

That's a good idea. Treat it like a test session. Short runs and tweaks rather than two hours straight and learning not much

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:21

    It still sounds the same

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 17:21

Steven got it right earlier when he said it sounds like you have a bucket on your head :P

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:22

It is slightly louder but not much

  • me17/01/2010 at 17:23

Sorry to make you feel old, but what's a 45?

If it's possible to hear me in the next segment I will try and explain!

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:41

I actually don't know what that means.

It refers to olde worlde vinyl singles which played at 45 rpm

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:42

Sorry to make you feel old, but what's a 45?

    +

    Stop that right now

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 17:43

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:44

I have made some adjustments... I have no idea what I am doing though :)

That just makes it more fun and more satisfying when it works.

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 17:44

And don't worry... There will be some modern music in the second half of the show... honest :)

  • Christine17/01/2010 at 17:44

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 17:45

Still the same crackliness, boo :(

  • Pat W17/01/2010 at 17:49

Sorry to make you feel old, but what's a 45?

I think it is the radius of an old record, in inches

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 17:50

I think it is the radius of an old record, in inches

That would make a record 7 and a half feet in diameter

  • Jon Waldock17/01/2010 at 17:50

I think it is the radius of an old record, in inches

    Radius? really?

    thats a big ol' record

    Giggle's Back Alright!

ohh goodness... amy will be sad she is missing this..

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 17:56

I heard that Chris Evans... Despite being quite an experienced broadcaster did 7 as-live full 2 hour tests before taking over the Radio 2 breakfast shows... I think I can see why... But surely this would be more fun!

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 17:57

Hmm, oh well, at least it's more pennies for them.

    Exactly!

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 17:57

    Yeah we did eventually. The back of my neck is sore from the karting yesterday, and I have two small bruises on my inner knees as well. But they're insignificant compared to what I managed to achieve last night. I made the final of the karting and it doesn't matter if I came last in it, I still got there. :D {Comment #133}

    Yay! That's the attitude :)

I have a small bruise on the inside of my right knee (nothing compared to the huge ones on both inner knees last year), my chest aches and so do my armpits. I know where I got the chest ache (got hit from behind just as I was trying to regain speed after talking to a marshall and hit the wall at some velocity) and the other things are injuries I assume are normal for the way I kart in these machines.

  • Christine17/01/2010 at 17:57

I heard that Chris Evans... Despite being quite an experienced broadcaster did 7 as-live full 2 hour tests before taking over the Radio 2 breakfast shows... I think I can see why... But surely this would be more fun!

And it took until Thursday for him to be comfortable with it.

He said that in an interview

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 17:57

Hmm, oh well, at least it's more pennies for them.

And you just influnced my music collection

    Mind = blown

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 18:00

    It's even more special when you take into consideration that it was only the 4th time I'd ever stepped into a kart and the 2nd time I'd done in so in competition. {Comment #138}

    Scott Woodwiss is awesome!

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:00

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 18:03

Oh no! Is there anything I can do to reduce the likelihood of that happening next time?

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:04

The crackling is slowly sneaking it's way back in but not as bad as before

    Yay s-s-s-s-sabotage!

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:04

There is very slight crackling coming in just at the end of that link. Nothing bad though

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:08

I have a feeling we will be getting the Fratellis soon :)

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 18:08

    I think Joe is starting to get annoyed with some of the Alonso fans. {Comment #153}

Well, I have to admit the people who are stuck in a two-year-old warped timewarp are a tad annoying at times...

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:09

    heh :)

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:09

Well, I have to admit the people who are stuck in a two-year-old warped timewarp are a tad annoying at times...

I think the problem is more that they believe the Spanish press and think the rest of the world is 100% biased against Alonso regardless of any logic.

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:10

Combine 'arvester > Roller skates ;)

    saved by the tune though.

    Absolutely... A classic!

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:27

Crackly but only when you speak. When you pause the crackling disappears

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:29

Crackly but only when you speak. When you pause the crackling disappears

I suddenly found myself trying to remember what I had been about to say before the previous song... Bad idea. I clearly don't have 3 minutes of memory to rely on!

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:30

Okay... Well I think we've been though the eighties and the nineties so... Maybe the next song should be from the naughties? I think I have one. A little less rocky too.

  • Christine17/01/2010 at 18:31

    The crackling went away again.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:32

Vampire Weekend!! awesome!! :D lovely choice in music today Alex :D

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:35

Ive always wondered what charlie brooker's show theme tune was!! :o

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:37

    The crackling went away again.

Yeah... It's weird... If I stop my channel in Garage Band then it crackles when it comes back. If I stop and start it in the midi channel then it works. But clearly after a couple of seconds Garage Band realises something is up and plays it through both channels. So now I am stopping it in Garage band and then in the midi and then doing the reverse before the song starts... Not sure this is the final solution but it will probably do for now.

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:37

Ive always wondered what charlie brooker's show theme tune was!! :o

    I've got ham but I'm not a hamster ;)

I've got Side but not a podcast...

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:49

    What is that buzzer?

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:49

    What is that buzzer?

I think it's when Alex goes from the music to Alex's mic

  • Pat W17/01/2010 at 18:49

booo... Sorry to Pat too :(

not your problem, it worked for lots of other people.

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:49

    Woohoo :D

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:50

    What is that buzzer?

It's when somebody gets a point. It's either buzzer or crackle I'm afraid :(

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:51

I think I'm going to end up over-running for sentimental reasons. I've chopped out a ton of songs so I'll only be a few minutes over.

One more after this... I just realised I gave completely the wrong impression at the end of that link.

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:55

Sorry to Sidepodcast for taking over the comments with my radio show. It's just the Mr C has written a fantastic doohicky :)

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:57

Confusingly this song has actually got crackle baked right into the recording.

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:58

    Crackle is back

  • Christine17/01/2010 at 18:58

    Lurve this song!

  • Lukeh17/01/2010 at 18:58

    Ah what a classic :)

  • Steven Roy17/01/2010 at 18:58

    Good choice to finish on

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 18:58

    same time next week?

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:03

    Thanks!

Most of the songs, except for the requests started with the letter A... read into that what you will (I have a large record collection being one thing you could safely read into it)

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:04

    same time next week?

Really need to sort out the crackle though... Hmmm... I'll need to do some more research.

So it's like QI. Series one is all A. Series 2 is all B

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:05

Actually a lot of the songs that got cut started with an A. Those technical problems caused some issues there!

I didn't know it was happening, so only caught the last 15 mins or so. Is there a track listing?

  • Pat W17/01/2010 at 19:10

Yeah we did eventually. The back of my neck is sore from the karting yesterday, and I have two small bruises on my inner knees as well. But they're insignificant compared to what I managed to achieve last night. I made the final of the karting and it doesn't matter if I came last in it, I still got there. :D

I thought you did well. In the final you were caught behind a group of 2 or 3 in a Trulli Train, every now and then you'd get blocked at the hairpin and had no choice but to fall back, and you closed up the gap at the same sort of pace the top five were running.

  • lou17/01/2010 at 19:10

I think the podcasts provision specifically bans video podcasts for reasons I can't understand... But as I say I'll have to check.

It's a great idea and a nice car - they even have a proper calendar this year ;)

    Suck it, A1GP!

It is a ridiculous and terrible idea, with a great car and impressive calendar.

there's no need to podcast it. we can just embed you in a post and you can call us with your fancy augmented audio device :)

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:24

To be honest the parade lap show was always meant as a live filler pre-race. A warm up. Not to be kept for posterity. I mean if anything really great happens we'll have a recording to use which we can take clips from.

The only other specific thing to notice is actually harder to monitor.. but you have the same restriction on songwriters two. I almost actually hit it on one of the earlier selections that I did because I was going to include 3 songs written by Bob Dylan. To listen to them you would never have known. All Along the Watchtower, All the Wild Horses (neither of which are performed by Dylan) and Don't think Twice it's alright (which I may have gone Nick Drake on but probably would have been Dylan). But yeah. I guess it's to stop somebody releasing an album as a radio show.

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:31

Have just seen Mr Codling's tweet... I have to say my mind immediately went to Lou... But obviously not really... But... Anyway I'll stop this comment now.

I'm guessing there must be ways to have extenuiating circumstance for some radio shows though, just thinking of when Radio 1 did the Muse night a few months back and obviously playing a lot of songs all written by Matt Bellamy witrhin the hourly span.

    I did speak to Franck yesterday when getting his autograph. He does still remember who Christine is, and he has told me when I asked him that he is no longer in the frame for the 2nd Renault seat, as the opportunity has gone and it's been given to someone else. {Comment #165}

I'm pleased to see Franck remembers his fans. I think he deserves the second seat more than the driver who I think will get it (Jerome d'Ambrosio), but the latter has a management contract with the new part-owners and Franck doesn't,,,

Oh. Is that what that means? Who knew?

  • Alex Andronov17/01/2010 at 19:36

    Ahhh, makes sense :)

Also from what I understand they don't make you send them your track listings they take a sample from all kinds of radio stations. So they might ask, but the might not. I guess this is harsh on smaller bands that don't get airplay. I mean how many times will Auf Der Meur get played this year on Radio 1? So part of this licence is to stop small stations from playing a lot of one artist and getting the stats out of whack which would mean the small artist wouldn't get paid appropriately.

  • Chris17/01/2010 at 19:36

Right, we're headed off now to do a show, see y'all on the flip side.

I might have missed something here. Does this mean there's a live show? A recorded debrief? Something like that?

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 19:36

I agree with you but if the racing is good I can forget the sillyness and watch it ;)

    Looking at the website, by 2012 they are expecting to have 18 races. Ambitious. {Comment #185}

And there I was thinking my expansion plans were ambitious... ...though Superleague Formula has at least enough sense to give itself two years to get there.

The class below (Grade 2). The only series that requires Grade 1 is F1, but a series as powerful as Superleague Formula will definitely not get away with anything as low as Grade 3.

They went to Canada for an 'F1 on ice' event with Sebastien Buemi, but the ice was too thin so they abandoned it and are now biding their time doing er, things.

Yup, that pic's from montreal. Buemi was going to do a demonstration on a fozen lake, but it wasn't thick enough. Apparently the lorry carrying the car started to sink and had to be pulled back by a tractor!

I'm striking while the iron is hot - a core of people at the karting last night thought it was a good idea, so I've spent quite a bit of today doing research. Currently awaiting prices and event proposals.

I welcome ideas and suggestions to help make this event (and indeed yesterday's event, which will re-run on the same Saturday next year) better.

Just back from [caps lock on] AUTOSPORT [caps lock off] International. So boring was it, that even the BSL lady couldn't be bothered to turn up on stage this year.

The biggest con was seeing the hordes of people who had forked out an additional £6 on their ticket to queue up for 3 hours or so to get Button's signature, only for him to be able to allocate 10 mins of his time. Cue many disgruntled punters!

I went to one possible summer karting venue today and snow had led to all their events today being cancelled, as well as most of the surrounding industrial estate being covered by white stuff. The snow has melted in low-lying areas but still lingers on higher ground.

  • Alianora La Canta17/01/2010 at 19:53

Greetings from teh land of Soggy Tundra.

We a a bit of a warm speel here. Watch the ice. It is thin and we would not want anyone but McLaren drivers (especially ones that only gave 10 minutes time to their fans today) to fall though it.

  • Pat W17/01/2010 at 20:03

Same here. I couldn't actually get away from him AND ALL THE SAME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

I only saw him in the live show. The main stage was packed and to be honest I didn't feel like hearing from him again. Hardly anyone turned up for McNish, Wurz and the flying icecubes..

F1 Racing was busy with a big area roped off when the Peugeot boys were there (it was only near the end of the day each car was roped off and you could get nearer to them). We didn't see Jenson there but knew he was coming.

More like Montagny stalked some of us :-)

Thing is, after seeing Jenson at the live show (which was a surprise), and knowing how busy it would get after Chris told us so having seen the earlier stage interview, I didn't feel the desire to be squashed in hearing him be asked the same questions when it'll probably be online anyway.

He was good in the arena though, very confident.

I'm looking through mine now. The quality is quite bad. I frequently left the flash on because even though I turned it off, all the settings were forgotten every time I switched off the camera. So even those with reasonable lighting have come out grainy or blurred. How are yours?

I did get video of Codders talking to Franck, you can hardly hear them. I don't know if I can upload it legally but until told otherwise I'm claiming 'fair use' and it is on its way to YouTube...

    here and here.

That's the only video footage I got. There was also the Tiff vs Vicki 5th Gear thing which was boring.. just them doing donuts in a Porsche and a Jag. some drifting, some Fiestas racing, some MX5s racing and the Autosport Young Drivers at walking pace in Palmer Audis (the MX5s were faster). All of the races were too short, they could easily have dropped some boring parts and had longer races.

Nice photos Pat, I do like how some teams did bring the 2009 car. It always annoys me to just see an old car painted like the new car. *cough* Ferrari, Williams, Renault *cough*

The Red bull was left of the brawn, and the Mclaren was on the right. It was basicly a podium for the constructers!

I'm not sure which Ferrari it was, opinions ranged from 2004 to 2008 I think, but it was complete with KERS logo

    not logo... warning

It still said F60 on the front, which annoyed me so much!

That seems the most ridiculous detail to go to. Everyone can plainly see that's not the F60.

That takes the biscuit! I want to complain!

    can they?

  • Tom G17/01/2010 at 23:24

    can they?

Well, in comparison to the other 2009 cars, you'll see the difference in wing sizes. It's a bit like Spot The Difference, really.

  • lou17/01/2010 at 23:26

ahh that makes sense. looks like it was the actual brawn, not the hondara108 with the brawn livery. yay for that! :)

Yep, does look like the BGP001. Good on them for bringing it, I say.

Yup real brawn, real red bull and real mclaren. Seeing as red bull hve an RB5 in Canada at the moment, it seems odd that ferrari williams and renault couldn't get their latest cars down...

Usually, Red Bull just run in the showcar, which is a heavily modernised RB1, but you can usually still see it's the RB1. Pleasant surprise to see the RB5 there, wish I could have gone to see it!

Ferrari I can understand, bit of a bother to get it from Italy in January. Williams and Renault are only really just down the road though..

  • lou17/01/2010 at 23:30

ooo on the subject of show cars/ road show cars i wonder what Mercedes will do this year. I'm not sure they'd have one of the Brawn cars repainted seeing as there was only ever 3 made. Maybe they'd repaint an ra108 again?

For events like goodwood maybe they'd bring the 2010 mercedes car but show off the Brawn? Didn't Brawn have a problem that they couldn't run their car up the hill last year due to testing laws?

What shocked me about that car was that a guy reached over to touch it and actually caused the car to rock forwards and back with one finger on a tyre. He wasn't even trying, which shows how light those things are!

I can see a brawn car with a mercedes logo on it going up the hill... might be wishful thinking though...

Yep, incredible really! It might have had the engine removed though, possibly.

with no Jenson.. and it being unlikely Schumi or Nico would come i think that maybe Mercedes may keep Ant.. seeing Ant in the Brawn again would be awesome! plus it would mean he'd have to come to goodwood (this again is probably wishful thinking)

  • Chris17/01/2010 at 23:34

    Wouldn't be suprised/

It'd be entirely possible, considering its proximity to the public, and the cost of an engine.

im not sure those reasons are really true surely? get an old engine they've used, take the pistons etc out and just leave the crank so theres something going through it. would imagine that would be easier than designing something that takes the engine's place with as much rigidity.
